POP GUZZLERS are encouraged to join the second ‘fizz free February’ this month to tackle obesity, related type-2 diabetes, and tooth decay in Southwark.

By cutting out just one bottle of pop a day, savvy shoppers could save £438 a year.

But the impact is more than just financial as doctors say fizzy and soft drinks are a leading contributor to high obesity rates including in children.

Research show drinking one 3330 ml can of pop each day can mean piling on a stone in weight throughout the year.

As tooth decay is the leading cause of children aged five to nine being hospitalised, it is hoped that the Fizz Fee February campaign - started by Southwark Council last year and now rolled out across the UK - could make a real difference to our health.

Primary School in Bermondsey and Cobourg Primary in Camberwell.

Campaign backers include celebrity chefs Jamie Oliver and Hugh FearnleyWhittingstall, and London Mayor Sadiq Khan.

Oliver, who has become a dedicated food campaigner, said: “Sugary fizzy drinks are the biggest single source of sugar in the average kid's diet.

“So it’s a fantastic idea to go fizz-free for a month – your body and teeth might really enjoy it! Sign up and tell me how you're getting on #GoFizzFree."

Labour’s deputy leader Tom Watson, said the campaign was a low-cost way to raise awareness of sugar and its role in causing obesity.

“I know what cutting down on sugar can do to your health, I know it because that’s how I lost weight,” he said. Watson lost seven stone last year through diet and exercise after being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, which he says is now ‘in remission’.

Guy’s Chair warns of Brexit ‘shadow’

GUY’S AND St Thomas’ hospitals have warned of Brexit’s “deepening shadow” over the Trust, as the hospitals continue to make contingency plans for a no deal Brexit.

In a report to the board of directors on January 30, Trust Chairman Sir Hugh Taylor (pictured) said: “Brexit continues to dominate the political landscape – and to cast a deepening shadow over the Trust.

“The risks to the NHS and this

Trust of a ‘no deal’ exit at the end of March have been well documented.

“The Trust is now deeply engaged in contingency planning; and we will be reporting on this at the Board meeting.”

As the News has reported, Guy’s and St Thomas’ have a high proportion of EU staff, including one in five midwives – and has already seen a 63 per cent fall in net EU recruitment in the 2016/17 financial year.

The Trust established a steering group in September to develop contingency plans as “the possibility of a No Deal Brexit looked more

likely”, the board papers also reveal.

Working groups looking at the supply of medicines, goods and services and clinical prioritisation “in the event of any critical shortages” have also been established by the hospitals.

At an audit committee meeting in November, Trust staff raised fears of the impact of a no deal Brexit on pharmacy, blood products and nuclear medicine isotopes.

These are labelled “key risks” for the Trust, as the vital products cannot be stockpiled and stored for long because of refrigeration requirements.

Southwark News started life as the Bermondsey News in 1987, as an A-4 photocopied sheet of paper and rapidly grew to cover the entire borough and the surrounding area. As the borough grew, so did the newspaper.

It is owned and run by Chris Mullany and Kevin Quinn.

Former reporters for Southwark News, they bought the title in 2002, after the founder Dave Clark died suddenly from cancer four years earlier.

Both directors live in the borough. A dedicated team of staff work tirelessly to cover as much of what is going on as possible and strive to ensure that a community-led, independent newspaper can survive and excel in a market dominated by national and multinational media groups.

According to the draft minutes of the November audit committee, officials found: “The number of medicines declared as ‘in shortage’ had doubled since last year, though the reasons for this were unclear.

“Changes to medicines prescribed as a result of a ‘no deal’ Brexit could affect patients with potential impact on capacity if patients had to be recalled for these to be implemented.

“There would also be issues were pharmaceutical companies to increase their prices in the event of currency fluctuations and general medicine shortages.”

However, the committee added that the risks and concerns were “speculative at this stage” and that Trusts have been warned not to stockpile medicines as it could cause unnecessary problems.

Separately, Sir Taylor noted the “unprecedently high level of planned care activity” during winter and the “intense” level of pressure on staff at all levels of the organisation.

‘NO INCOME tax, no VAT, no money back, no guarantee’ are words from a tune that we all know and love; a song that asks the question, why do only fools and horses work?

And up to now that song by legendary sitcom writer John Sullivan has been the only music to remind us of the show that defined Peckham and the dodgy market trader - Only Fools and Horses.

That was until Paul Whitehouse and Sullivan’s son Jim joined forces to complete his late father’s wishes to write a musical about those rascally reprobates, the Trotters.

Yes, Only Fools and Horses is back but this time on the West End stage and not on one of those TV repeat channels. Whitehouse and Sullivan have wrote the script and score, with additional music from late greats John Sullivan and Chas Hodges, to make this a big must-see in 2019.

All the regulars will be there and several iconic scenes from the series will be resurrected in this new tale of the Trotters taking on the yuppie invasion while looking for love in Peckham.

Tom Bennett, who has been handed the big role of Del Boy spoke to us about: what this all means to the fans, the actors who originally turned the characters into working-class heroes, the big shoes he has to fill.

A big plus for all South London enthusiasts of OFAH will be that Tom is also a South Londoner, so we won’t have to worry about any fake London accents assaulting our earholes.

Cushty. And he’s a Crystal Palace fan.

Tom has wanted to be an actor from the age of 10, and he claims with pride, “Most kids at school wanted to become footballers, but I knew early on that I wanted to be an actor, and I liked it, so that was it.’

There is acting in the genes through both his parents, which means that he was always very aware of the pitfalls and uncertainties of that precarious profession.

“I grew up intrinsically knowing it was a tough gig with no job security…

And now, after many years, I can say

Tom jokes that he hasn’t had to yet ‘find a proper job’ and that even though this is a dream role for him he doesn’t think ‘this time next year we’ll be millionaires’.

But acting is a serious business, and comedy acting probably the most serious. Tom Bennett calls himself a ‘Telly comedy boy’ so going back to theatre will not be an easy move, but he realises this will be a good thing for his career if he can be seen as someone who can carry a West End musical, adding, with a laugh ‘But it still won’t add job security.’

He doesn’t know how many Del Boys were seen before he was offered the part, but he does remember there

being an audible sigh of relief when they realised he could hold a note.

Even now he says, ‘It still hasn’t sunk in yet that I’m playing Del Boy, but every time I put the costume on it begins to feel a little bit more real.’

Tom will not be doing an impression of David Jason’s version of Del Boy but bringing his own stamp on the character.

He explains thus: ‘The problem with just doing an impression is that you’ll lose a lot of the heart, the sincerity and the fragility of Del Boy - the emotional aspects - and if you lose that then the audience are not willing to come with you.’ At the same time Tom understands that the audience will want to see a Del Boy they know and

he will be giving them that, promising to work hard at getting this right.

Having seen the script, Tom believes this show is a winner. He revealed that woven into the new story are several of the nation’s top OFAH scenes.

“Paul and Jim,” he says, “have been able to take some of the best bits from all the series to use for their own purposes here, while it still plays as if it was by John Sullivan.”

But like all actors, Tom Bennett laughs as he predicts that when this show comes to an end he will once again be fretting that, ‘I’ll never work again’, but if we all, as OFAH fans, get behind this musical version and not spend energy comparing it negatively

Police seek two men ‘with Bermondsey links’ who ‘seriously injured man by driving car at him’

POLICE ARE seeking two men believed to have links to Bermondsey, who reportedly seriously injured a man by driving their car at him in Hounslow.

A verbal altercation took place between the occupants of two cars at a McDonald’s drive-thru at around 12.45am on September 28 in Bath Road, Hounslow.

Moments after, the police said, the driver of one of the vehicles – a black

Ford Focus – drove it towards four male pedestrians, who had got out of the other car.

It hit one of them, a 26-year-old man, leaving him with serious head injuries.

He is still reportedly suffering impaired hearing and loss of balance five months after the incident.

None of the other pedestrians were injured.

Despite an “extensive” police search, the two men in the Ford Focus, believed to have connections to Southwark and Bermondsey in particular, have not been traced.

The car was being driven under fake number plates, and has not been spotted since.

Police asked anyone who recognised the two men to contact detectives on 101 quoting CAD 275/sep28.

Anyone who may have seen the black Ford Focus, which had significant damage on its front passenger door prior to the incident, is also asked to contact police.

Officers said information about the car could be “crucial” in the investigation.

Instead plastic-style barriers were used – but the organisers said they were never told to provide a hard barrier.

In a letter, discussed by councillors at the sub-committee meeting, PC Graham White of the Met’s Licensing Unit said last year’s festival showed a “clear lack of organisation and structure.”

“Unless full security, licensing conditions and other public safety considerations are covered, we would consider it unsafe for the event to proceed,” PC White added.

However, the event organiser Bill Owen told the News on Monday that the festival had never been told to provide the barriers.

“Our commitment to our visitors is paramount. We were never asked to provide the barriers they say we were asked to provide,” he said.

The permission has been granted subject to certain conditions being met to allay police concerns, the News understands.

The festival, which sees thousands of attendees, will take place on September 14. It has been running since 2007.

THE MAN found guilty of manslaughter after the death of Katrina Makunova in a block of Camberwell flats last year has been jailed.

Oluwaseyi Dada, aged 21, from Brisbane Street, SE5, was handed two years and three months in prison last Thursday, January 31 at the Old Bailey.

Police called to the flats in Brisbane Street on July 12,2018, found Dada giving an injured Katrina CPR. She died at the scene, and a postmortem recorded the cause of death as a single stab wound.

Dada was charged with manslaughter the next day.

At his trial, the court heard how seventeen-year-old Katrina and Dada were in a relationship that had deteriorated and a series of 'veiled threats and insults' had been exchanged between them on social media.

It was said that on the day she died, Katrina, from Lewisham, encountered Dada in the lobby of his block of flats and in a physical struggle Katrina fell on her handbag, and was fatally wounded by a knife inside.

Detective Inspector Domenica Catino from the Homicide and Major Crime Command said: "A young woman has lost her life and our thoughts remain with her family and friends, who have been devastated by Katrina's death.

"This case is a tragedy for everyone involved.

"This was a case of manslaughter in which the victim had taken a knife to the scene.

"After an altercation with Dada this knife - which had never been taken out of the bag - pierced the bag, stabbing her in her chest resulting in her death.

"This is unfortunately another sad example of the consequences of carrying knives.

"We must all work hard to prevent any further loss of lives."

Bermondsey Street Festival to go ahead despite police concerns over lack of barriers to prevent terror attack

A BERMONDSEY charity shop is appealing for help after its windows were completely smashed by football hooligans during the Millwall v Everton cup violence last Saturday.

The Southwark Park Road branch of Mind charity shop had its windows smashed by hooligans chasing a man into the shop. The man then allegedly pulled out a knife.

The damage caused by the disorder will cost the charity £1,500 in repairs while £300 worth of men’s clothing was also allegedly stolen by disorderly fans. The windows have now been replaced.

“It was football day, so we had all the Millwall fans in the pub [over the road], but it all seemed good natured,” a volunteer at the branch who was on duty at the time said.

“Then we heard shouting and I saw the crowd in the pub head over the road. All of the sudden, a guy burst in and they all ran after him.

“He came into the backroom and they all came in to get him. Then the guy pulled a knife out from his pocket. I think it was more bravado, I don’t think he had any intention of doing anything.”

A mother and her child were also in the shop at the time.

A staff member at the shop tried to usher the crowd out but the windows were destroyed in the melee.

The knife-wielding man was reportedly arrested by police. The News asked the police for comment but did not receive a response before going to press.

The vandalism has been “really bad for business” said the charity shop volunteer, who did not wish to be named.

Appeal for help after ‘shop damaged in football disorder ’

“No-one likes the look of the shop all boarded up and new volunteers don’t like the idea of coming into somewhere that’s had that kind of incident.

“We want customers and volunteers to know this isn’t the norm.”

Now the branch wants to encourage people to donate their time to help replace the cost of the vandalised windows and ‘stolen stock’ from the shop.

“Every little bit helps,” said the witness.

They added: “It was only when I got home and got in the shower that I

realised, ‘Oh it really hasn’t been a good day at work’.

Police have said the outbreak of violence prior to the game was the worst hooliganism the city has seen for some years.

Last week the News reported that over 150 Everton fans made an unscheduled exit from Surrey Quays station before violence broke out on Rotherhithe’s Hawkstone Road.

The nearby Whelan’s pub suffered thousands of pounds worth of damage.

CHARITY FOR HAITI OPERATING IN SOUTHWARK HAS ITS BANK ACCOUNTS FROZEN BY WATCHDOG

A HEALTH charity operating in Southwark has had its bank accounts frozen after alleged “financial irregularities” of hundreds of thousands of pounds were uncovered by the charities watchdog.

The Charity Commission said it had launched a statutory inquiry into the activities of the Jela Foundation, a charity which aims to improve the lives of Haitian people and people of Haitian descent.

The watchdog said it uncovered a number of irregularities in the charities’ bank statements, allegedly including a discrepancy of £200,000 between filed annual accounts and bank transactions over five years.

The regulator also said it found “repeated payments, several times a month over a number of years to a charity trustee”, as well as “a pattern of donation payments totalling over £700,000 from individuals to the charity, including two trustees and a potentially connected party.”

“This raises concern that there may have been misapplication of charity funds and possible personal benefit,” the Charity Commission said.

The charity, which has an address listed in West Norwood, but operates in Southwark, will not be able to access its

bank accounts while the statutory inquiry is ongoing.

Money raised on major crowdfunding sites will also not be given to the charity without prior permission by the Commission.

It also said it was “concerned” that there were an insufficient number of trustees to comply with the charity’s governance rules.

A statutory inquiry is the watchdog’s most serious level of engagement with charities and gives it the power to compel evidence under oath, remove trustees or appoint interim managers.

The inquiry will investigate whether the charities’ trustees complied with their legal duties in preparing the accounts, whether the charity has been operating for the public good and whether funds can be properly accounted for.

According to its website, the Jela Foundation was founded to “relieve poverty, sickness and suffering by providing free education for children and youth from impoverished families around the world.”

The organisation also set up a primary school in Limbe, Haiti, with eight teachers, its website states.

The charity gives its areas of operations as Southwark, Bromley, Croydon, Westminster and Lambeth.

The News contacted the charity for comment via telephone and email, but had not received a response at the time of publication.

Development worth £500m is set to be rejected over shortfall of affordable homes BERMONDSEY

A £500 million development in Bermondsey headed up by the Duke of Westminster was set to be rejected as the News went to press - because it does not provide enough affordable housing.

Plans submitted by Grosvenor for the Old Biscuit Factory site on Drummond Road proposed up to 1,324 private rented flats, retail spaces and a secondary school, in buildings up to twenty-eight storeys high.

However, only 27 per cent of the flats are offered at ‘affordable’ rents, despite council requirements that the site provide 35 per cent affordable housing.

Couples would need to earn around £30,000 each to afford the affordable flats on offer, states the council’s report. The affordable housing would be let at an average of 75 per cent the market rate.

The proposed scheme also does not “realistically allow” for any units to be let at social rent equivalents, suitable for the poorest households with incomes of up to £20,000.

Other reasons for recommended refusal included flats failing to provide “an exemplary quality of accommodation” to counteract the negative impact of high-rise living and “illogical” routes which would “exacerbate pedestrian-vehicle and vehicular conflict.”

A report being considered by councillors at Wednesday’s planning meeting argues: “Benefits are not outweighed by the failure to provide the maximum reasonable amount of affordable housing, the quality of some aspects of the residential accommodation, and the risk of conflicts between vehicles and pedestrians which arise from the

service routes within the site.

“Despite very lengthy negotiations, it has not been possible to reach agreement on these critical issues, and therefore this report recommends that planning permission be refused.”

However, Grosvenor has argued that the required affordable housing could not be offered without jeopardising the viability of the scheme.

Craig McWilliam, Chief Executive of Grosvenor Britain & Ireland, told the News the company was “disappointed” by the council’s report.

“Our proposals are for a neighbourhood that is accessible to the growing majority of Londoners who simply cannot afford to buy, do not qualify for social housing and want the advantages of a secure professionally managed home to rent,” he said.

He added that Grosvenor wanted the scheme to be accessible “to as broad a range of people as possible” but that it had “consistently and publicly acknowledged” the scheme could not support social housing.

“The choices communities, councils and developers face are not being aired in what is often an oppositional debate about housing,” he said.

“Public sector leaders must encourage a more honest and pragmatic discussion of solutions that help a widening, but often overlooked, number of Londoners locked out of the housing market.”

A Grosvenor spokesperson declined to comment on what the next steps would be if the proposed scheme was rejected.

Grosvenor Britain & Ireland is part of the Grosvenor Estate, headed by Hugh Grosvenor, the Duke of Westminster.

He is worth a reported £9billion, making him the world’s richest person under 30.

ITALIAN FOOD market Mercato Metropolitano will launch a new project called MM Factory in Elephant and Castle this summer in Lendlease's Elephant Park.

In a statement sent to the News by developer Lendlease, it was revealed that the 17,500 square foot MM Factory will be based on the new Sayer Street, and will 'play a major role in establishing this part of the Elephant Park masterplan as a new food hub for London'.

Its existing food market on Newington Causeway- which employs 200 people has a focus on sustainable food and holds community events including cooking classes and workshops with kids from the area.

Andrea Rasca, Founder and selfdescribed 'chief executive dreamer’ of Mercato Metropolitano, said: “Elephant Park is an amazing opportunity for us, when looking at potential destinations it quickly became apparent that Lendlease is a landlord that shares our ideals and vision for the future.

"The Mercato Metropolitano ecosystem is all about community, a place for an ongoing dialogue between local people, farmers, chefs, retailer and artists, and we cannot think of a better place to build upon this community with a new approach to urban retail than Elephant Park.”

SEVEN NEW council homes are being squeezed into attics and unused space in two Camberwell blocks of flats.

Southwark Council has contracted southeast London based construction company Thomas Sinden to build the new social housing. Work has already started on six two-bedroom homes being built in what is described as a ‘redundant attic drying area’ in the roof of Camberwell Grove’s

Comber House, and a two-bedroom home being constructed in part of the ground floor of Coldharbour Lane’s Pinner House, which was originally built as a laundry.

Housing bosses are getting increasingly creative as they try to find space for more homes across the borough, assessing disused or empty spaces - or 'hidden homes - which can be turned around quickly into extra housing.

The new homes in Camberwell will cost one million to build, with work expected to last for around nine months.

Doctor Patrick to leave after six years leading the South London & Maudsley Trust

THE CHIEF executive of the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust will retire this summer, the Trust has announced.

Dr Matthew Patrick will step down in July 2019 after six years as the Trust’s CEO and after a 36-year career in the NHS which began at the Maudsley, where he trained as a psychiatrist before returning in 2013 as chief executive.

Among his many roles, Dr Patrick was responsible for chairing the London Mental Health Mental Health Response to Major incidents Board, which coordinated the capital’s NHS response to terrorist incidents in London after the London Bridge and Borough Market attacks.

He said: “It has been an absolute privilege to work for my whole professional career within the NHS, an institution that I love dearly.

“To have had the opportunity within the NHS to have an academic, a clinical and a managerial career feels remarkably lucky.

“It has been a great honour to have

been the chief executive of two organisations of international repute and lead such talented and committed staff who day in day out do their utmost to deliver excellent care to our patients and service users.”

Dr Patrick was described by the Trust’s chair, Roger Paffard, as ‘an inspirational leader’ and ‘a delight to work with’.

He will continue working full-time until July during recruitment for his successor, before taking up a position as a Senior Executive Director for the Trust.

LONDON SOUTH BANK UNIVERSITY AND LAMBETH COLLEGE ANNOUNCE MERGER

A MERGER between Lambeth College and London South Bank University was announced last Friday over two years after the plans were first revealed.

London South Bank University (LSBU) said that the college had joined its ‘family’ of education institutions in what it called 'a pioneering move designed to enhance Lambeth College’s offer and create greater access to education for all across south London'.

LSBU is a UK leader in technical education and graduate employability.

A video celebrating the merger and featuring Lambeth College students was made by digital creative agency, Net Natives, in collaboration with London South Bank University.

The university says that it 'promises students at Lambeth College the benefit of a wide range of educational and career development opportunities, including links to strong employer partnerships.'

Lambeth College, which changed it named to Lambeth Career College, already offers a wide range of courses and

apprenticeships designed to open doors to future careers, with its Clapham site sporting real work environments including a hair salon and restaurant.

London South Bank University opened as the Borough Polytechnic Institute in 1892 with the aim of providing opportunities for the people of south London, improving their employment prospects and advancing local businesses.

Around a quarter of LSBU students come from south east London and the focus of the university remains very much on professional and technical education.

THAMES WATER will start a major upgrade in Forest Hill and Dulwich next month as it replaces 131 metres of pipes in an area beset by burst mains and leaks.

A CHEF at a Borough restaurant has begun serving squirrel lasagnes to customers concerned about their carbon footprint.

Ivan Tisdall-Downes, Director and Head Chef at Native restaurant in Borough Market, makes a ragu by slow cooking meat taken from grey squirrels’ backlegs. According to trade publication Big Hospitality, diners can also enjoy

offal taken from squirrels – which is a key ingredient of Native’s game parfait.

The chef, a former chef at River Cottage, uses the ragu to make an open topped lasagne. The meat reportedly tastes quite similar to rabbit.

Grey squirrels, first introduced to Britain in the late nineteenth century, overwhelmingly outnumber their native red counterparts. Red squirrels are now labelled as ‘near threatened’ in England, Wales and Northern Ireland but are still locally common in Scotland.

The company says the new plastic pipes will fix long-term problems with leaks on London Road.

Work will start on February 16 and is scheduled to last for around eight weeks, causing some disruption to traffic.

PLANS THAT could see parking restrictions imposed on East Dulwich’s Lordship Lane have left residents divided and traders outraged.

While some are in favour of anything that could tackle air pollution, congestion, and fierce competition for on-street parking, others believe the move could sound a death knell for the busy high street and its independent shops.

Hundreds of posts have now been amassed on the online East Dulwich Forum, with some still undecided as to whether controlled parking really has environmental benefits – or whether it just encourages more people to pave over their gardens and use big chain stores further out.

But perhaps the strongest views are from aghast business owners who say they are already struggle with deliveries and matters will only be made worse if they can’t get permits for staff and punters have to pay.

A petition against the proposals displayed in shops along the street is gaining traction – and is supported by William Rose Butchers.

Owner, David Isaacs, said the business had already relocated to East Dulwich from Kennington over parking problems, saying it took two years of lobbying to even get a loading bay for their deliveries.

His fears were echoed by resident Jules Parker, who told the News convenient parking meant she could shop on Lordship Lane while on the school run: “Currently parking is convenient and so I use the local independent shops regularly and instead of the larger stores further out,” she explained.

But those in favour include frustrated residents, who claim spaces are taken up by commuters travelling as from as far as Kent driving in to make use of spaces outside the overground station.

One incredulous resident shared on the forum: “In December I came across one chap, suited and booted, sitting in his Merc with the engine running whilst enjoying a bowl of cereal.

“He seemed genuinely surprised that I should object to his diesel fumes filling the street whilst he tucked in.”

Councillor Richard Livingstone, cabinet member for environment, transport management and air quality, said all residents in the proposed areas had been contacted with information and encouraged to have their say: “We have met with and listened to businesses on Lordship Lane, and will continue these talks. We will of course be reviewing what we learn from both talking to people and reviewing all of the responses that we get from residents, businesses and visitors to the area, from our consultations. Both of these consultations have already been extended in response to resident’s requests and I would again invite everybody to visit our website and let us know what you think.”

JUST THREE engine idling fines have been paid in a year since Southwark Council announced its crackdown on toxic air pollution, new figures reveal.

In response to a freedom of information request from the Liberal Democrats, the council confirmed that just ten penalty charge notices had been handed out to drivers between February 2018 and January 2019. Three, totalling £120, have been paid so far.

The statistics cast doubt on the new scheme’s effectiveness reducing toxic air pollution which causes asthma, heart disease and lung disease.

Since January last year, parking wardens can now issue £80 fines to parked car, bus, taxi and HGV drivers who refuse or ignore warnings to turn off their engines.

But Southwark Council’s transport head argued the statistics showed the anti-idling campaign was working.

Cllr Richard Livingstone, cabinet member for environment, transport management and air quality, argued:

“We introduced vehicle idling enforcement to educate drivers and improve air quality, not to make money.

“Fines are only applied when people refuse to turn off their engines – the law says that we have to ask them first - so no fine equals a win.”

A MOTHER and her newborn daughter were left without heating and hot water in the Aylesbury Estate last week, despite desperately phoning the out-of-hours line while in labour.

Anna* went into labour last Wednesday, and immediately called the out-of-hours service, who told her an engineer would call between 8am and 8pm the following day, when she would be giving birth.

“I couldn’t believe my ears,” she said, “my husband started boiling kettles to try and make a hot bath to help with the contractions.

“It was too early to go to hospital, they would have sent me home and you don’t want to be waiting in hospital that long anyway.

“We were asking our neighbours to call up and report the problem so they would escalate it.”

The couple, who are private tenants in Taplow House, had to rely on fan heaters until she was admitted to Guys and St Thomas’ on Thursday, where she gave birth to a healthy baby girl.

Mum and baby were due to return home on Friday, but after being offered another night on the ward, Anna says she ‘jumped at the chance’ to stay somewhere warm and enjoy another hot shower – especially as she is still recovering from a chest infection.

Shockingly, Anna says she had repeatedly raised her concerns about giving birth in February if the estate’s system broke down with the council’s housing officers.

Now describing the hot water as ‘erratic’ at best, the family are one of many given electric fan heaters as an interim measure, but have no idea whether they will be reimbursed for the cost.

“It has been really stressful, everything takes longer, changing nappies, washing.

“I am trying to learn how to breastfeed, I’ve got stitches, and I’m having to decide where to sleep with her each night and taking the temperature every few hours to make sure it’s warm enough.

“When you wait for an hour to speak to someone to report a problem, and then the person is so cold, I’ve lost faith in them trying to reassure me.”

On top of on-going leaks, an underground pipe burst in January’s freezing weather, with Thurlow Street closed while engineers access the site.

Electric heaters have been given to residents and the Castle Leisure Centre is offering free hot showers.

Cllr Stephanie Cryan, Cabinet Member for Housing Management and Modernisation at Southwark Council, apologised and said she understood residents’ anger.

“The Aylesbury estate is in a poor condition and has significant design flaws that make finding the source of leaks and other issues difficult, and fixing them can be very challenging,” she said.

“This is one of the main reasons the decision was taken to regenerate the estate and provide our residents with top quality, modern and efficient homes.

“In the meantime the council has invested over £4m in our effort to maintain the district heating system and prevent the continuing break downs that happen each winter as temperatures drop.

“Preventive works began before the start of winter but we were unable to predict every issue and the burst pipe has caused additional problems that we are working to fix.”

Don’t allow EU citizens be treated like the Windrush Generation I T IS so dismaying that EU citizens who have been such an important part of our community, who have had families here and lived in Southwark for decades are now facing the anxiety of having to ‘settle their status’ as the UK leaves the EU.

The Government says that EU citizens are “our friends, our neighbours, our colleagues and we want them to stay.” They will only have to prove they are existing residents.

That is, of course, exactly what was said to the Windrush Generation. But everyone now acknowledges that terrible mistakes were made and people who were here for years were wrongly detained as illegal immigrants.

With no independence or accountability in the system Home Office mistakes are inevitable. So it’s vital that as the Government subjects 3million EU citizens to our immigration system, they make sure lessons have been learnt from Windrush and those injustices are not repeated.

As Chair of Parliament’s Joint Committee on Human Rights I’m leading an inquiry into this. We heard

harrowing evidence from people wrongly detained, separated from their children and threatened with deportation. The evidence on their files that they were long term residents was ignored, the pleas of their families swept aside.

I have helped countless people in Camberwell and Peckham challenge Home Office decisions. Like one Chinese man who was detained for 33 days and threatened with removal. He is now back home with his partner.

Those we get to hear about are only the tip of the iceberg. But we know that £21million was paid out by the Home Office in just 5 years to compensate people for wrongful detention.

If you are suspected of a crime you can’t be detained by government only by the police - who are independent of government. If the police need to detain you beyond 36 hours they have to bring you to court also independent of government.

But if the Home Office suspects you of being in breach of immigration laws, there is a complete absence of independence in the decision-making.

A civil servant – nameless and faceless behind closed doors - ticks a box to detain you. The first you’ll know about it is there’ll be a banging

on your door in the early hours of the morning, you’re bundled into a van and taken to a detention centre.

You have no idea whether you’ll be in the detention centre for a day, a month, or a year. The Criminal Justice System imposes time-limits at every stage of detention. But the Home Office can hold you in immigration detention indefinitely.

It should not be the case that you have fewer protections as an immigrant than you would if you had actually committed a crime. For any individual traumatised by indefinite detention, that’s reason to change the policy. But it is now happening on such a scale that it is really important to deal with it.

In the 1990s there were only 250 detention places. Now there are over 2,500 and more than 27,000 people are detained every year.

I am working with Yvette Cooper MP, Hilary Benn MP, Dominic Grieve QC MP, David Davis MP and Andrew Mitchell MP to amend the Brexit Immigration Bill to ensure that in future no-one is deprived of their liberty unless the decision is taken independently and to make it illegal for anyone to be held in an immigration detention centre for more than 28 days.

O HEATING and no hot water is an intermittent reality for many people on the Aylesbury Estate – and has been for years. The council argues fundamental design flaws are beyond repair and that’s why they’re knocking it down to build safe, warm housing.

But campaigners say decades of underinvestment is what brought the Aylesbury spiralling into wrack and ruin.

Either way, we are past the point of return now. The council says it has sunk millions into patching up a heating system that barely functions for substantial chunks of the year.

And one burst underground pipe has undone all this hard work and once again it is the residents left suffering.

We know the council is doing its best to fix the pipe as soon as possible. But with all the good faith in the world, the long-term problems on the Aylesbury will probably never be fixed.

To hear the story of a new mother and her baby coming home to a freezing cold flat without hot water puts the day-to-day reality of living in the beleaguered estate into sharp focus.

Many of the people now living on the Aylesbury are in temporary accommodation, and are vulnerable people navigating the most difficult point in their lives. Some are mothers rebuilding lives shattered by domestic abuse.

What does it say about our society when people, at their most desperate, are put in homes beset with leaks, rat and mice infestations, on a condemned estate full of empty, boarded up homes?

They may have a roof over their head, but it takes more than a ceiling and four walls to make a home habitable. No one should have to live like this.

Homelessness is on the rise, and the high cost of living and housing shortage across Southwark has worsened the problem, leaving housing chiefs struggling to find suitable temporary accommodation sites.

The Aylesbury is one of very few places with empty two and three bedroom flats. The alternatives are, all too often, B&Bs and hostels miles away.

Southwark Council’s Stephanie Cryan, the cabinet member responsible for housing, has told this paper of the difficulty of finding accommodation when many private landlords will not rent to universal credit claimants.

And, as we reported last month, the council has even been left renting back housing stock sold off through right-to-buy, leading to calls for the controversial scheme to be curtailed. We are told austerity is over, but the council is still having to do more with less.

Together, they hope to open up conversations around death, dying and grief by curating a programme of shows based around the subject called ‘Let’s Talk @ VAULT Festival’.

Kimberley St John, a palliative care nurse and the transforming end of life care lead at Guy’s and St Thomas’, says: “We know that having a conversation about death is not an easy thing to do, particularly when it involves someone close to us. But by doing so, we can help make sure that the end of someone’s life is managed in the best way possible for them and their relatives.

“We wanted to partner with VAULT Festival to demonstrate that it is not just doctors and nurses that can help people think about death. The arts are a fantastic way of providing different perspectives on what remains a very difficult subject.

“Some shows will make you laugh.

Some will make you cry. All will get you thinking. Death affects us all, so we should talk about it.”

SLEEP EXPERTS from Evelina London have designed lesson plans for schools to help tackle sleep problems among children and young people.

The new resources have been developed jointly by the hospital’s department of children’s sleep medicine and the PSHE Association, a membership body for teachers.

Dr Charlie Tyack, clinical psychologist at Evelina London, says: “Good quality sleep is a key foundation for emotional and physical wellbeing, as well as educational performance.

Everyone's sleep requirements differ, so a one-size-fits-all approach to sleep tends not to work for everyone.

“Thankfully, there is greater awareness of sleep issues in children and young people, which is partially why we are seeing a rise in hospital admissions for sleep problems in this age group.

“These lessons help young people to think realistically about how to give themselves the best chances of getting the sleep they need to reach their full potential.”

A recent study published in the BMJ found that lack of sleep has a greater impact on an adolescent’s mental wellbeing than bullying, physical activity and screen time.

Jenny Fox, subject specialist at the PSHE Association, said: “These lessons equip children and young people with the knowledge,

skills and strategies they need to take increasing responsibility for the quality of their sleep. Pupils are encouraged to explore the myths related to getting good sleep, offer advice to others about

health and wellbeing.”

The lessons plans are available to PSHE teachers to use within the health and wellbeing theme of their PSHE curricula for pupils aged seven to 16.

New films for kidney patients

A SERIES of films has been specially created for Guy’s and St Thomas’ to help people living with chronic kidney disease manage their condition.

The four videos explore the different treatments available so that patients can make informed decisions about their care.

Amaka Ejibe opted for home peritoneal dialysis and appears in one of the films. She says: “I wanted to take part to try and help others who are on the same journey as me.”

A CAFÉ on Old Kent Road was shut down and its manager hauled in front of Camberwell Green Magistrates’ Court after a ‘revolting’ rat infestation was uncovered by food hygiene inspectors - prompting a complete overhaul of the premises.

Council workers were said to be disgusted to find the filthy condition of Cimraan Café at 300 Old Kent Road during a routine inspection held on January 22 last year.

The café was deemed so bad it was immediately closed down, with its 29-yearold owner, Mohamed Mohamud Ahmed from Vicarage Grove in Camberwell, handed costs and fines totalling nearly £7,000 for food safety and hygiene breaches when he appeared at court last Wednesday, January 30.

According to a statement from Southwark Council sent to the News, when questioned inspectors Ahmed ‘displayed a

complete lack of understanding regarding cleaning and disinfection’.

Councillor Victoria Mills said: “The owner of Cimraan Café showed blatant disregard for the health and safety of his customers and his staff and his premises was in a terrible state.”

The court heard the kitchen and food storage rooms were infested with rats, covered in dirt and in a bad state of repair.

Inspectors said Ahmed had no hygiene training records on file and no food safety procedures in place for staff, and the kitchen was so dirty, grease from a ventilation canopy was seen dripping into the cooking range.

Since he appeared in court, Ahmed has pest-proofed the café, deep-cleaned and fitted a new kitchen, and made improvements to the customer toilet.

After another inspection on Tuesday, February 5, inspectors lifted the ban and allowed the café to re-open.

CHIDERA EGGERUE, the Peckham-born blogger, writer and TV presenter is backing a new campaign to raise awareness of the impact painful sex has on women.

As the News reported last year, Eggerue, best known by her blogging alias, The Slumflower, has used her social media platform and profile to encourage young women to be confident in their bodies, most famously with her #SaggyBoobsMatter movement.

Now she is lending her voice to a campaign encouraging women to talk about uncomfortable sex, saying too many are ‘suffering silence’ as they are too embarrassed to use lubricant.

Durex shows that 73% of women have experienced discomfort during sex.

One in three women say the problem reduces their sex drive, and one in ten have even faked an orgasm to end sex more quickly.

The manufacturer has launched a new website with advice for dealing with the issue.

According to Durex, many women are unaware that women often feel ‘drier’ at certain points in their menstrual cycle as well as during the menopause. Stress, tampons and having a baby can all also lead to vaginal dryness.

OLDER LGBT people feeling like they have to go back into the closet in residential care will be one of the problems discussed at an innovative workshop this month.

Elderly LGBT people can often be more dependent on health and social care services than straight counterparts, says Opening Doors London, the charity which is running the event.

The free workshop, held in partnership with Age UK Lewisham and Southwark, will celebrate the lives of Southwark’s older lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans community, as well as talking about the challenges LGBT people face in older age.

“I’m very excited about the event – we’ll all make sure it’s going to be a lot of fun, but it will also raise a lot of awareness of the incredible contribution that older LGBT+ people have made to the freedoms younger LGBT+ people can experience today, as well reminding us that older LGBT+ people are often more dependent on health and social care services than some of their heterosexual neighbours,” said Jim Glennon, Training and Consultancy Manager at Opening Doors London.

“We’re also really grateful to Age UK Lewisham and Southwark for partnering with us, and for offering their venue for us to meet and share experiences together,” he added.

Homosexuality was only partially decriminalised in 1967, meaning many LGBT pensioners will have lived through a period where it was illegal to be gay.

Many also feel that they have to go ‘back into the closet’ once they are in care, or feel less able to be open about their sexuality and gender identity.

Stephen Carlill, 67, who lives in Herne Hill with his husband and attends events put on by the charity told the News: “We get together for a couple of hours each month just to chat really.

“People don’t really understand that there are lots of LGBT issues at both ends of the age range.

“One of the problems of getting older is that you become somewhat isolated. Friends die off or you become limited in your mobility.”

Mr Carlill said he “dreaded” the thought of going into residential care because “the experience of many LGBT people is that they go back into the closet when they get into residential care.”

Care homes with a significant numbers of lesbian, gay or trans staff members tended to be better, he added.

The free workshop runs from 2pm4.30pm on Wednesday Feburary 13, at the Yalding Healthy Living Centre on Southwark Park Road.

The charity is the biggest tailoring services to older LGBT people and runs monthly social events and also runs a befriending service to break down the isolation older LGBT people face.

artin Crimp’s When We Have Sufficiently Tortured Each Other is “provoked” by Samuel Richardson’s Pamela, a book published in 1740. The book tells the story of a master (Mr. B) who tries to sexually impose himself on a young housemaid (Pamela) who rebuffs his every attempt until he offers an equitable marriage, which she eventually gets and accepts, writes Chris Peacock.

Crimp’s play is composed of twelve vignettes that analyse the relationship between the two protagonists. Crimp has brought the couple forward in time to modern day and the whole piece is staged in the two-car garage of a country house. The sexual relationship is examined further with cross dressing and role reversal that gets played out over two hours.

Cate Blanchett and Stephen Dillane play the roles of Man and Woman. Their performances are incredibly watchable and carry the show as they both handle the role reversals immaculately, while fleshing out what they can of this piece. Their never-ending arguments and manipulation of each other are portrayed with the assistance of four other cast members, moody lighting and a dramatic score.

What the show lacks, however, is any real emotional connect to those

Now she is back as Mary Jane Hanraham in Pulitzer Prize winner Stephen Adly Guirgis’s Jesus Hopped the ‘A’ Train. Dervla sums it up as a play asking whether ‘justice and God

can be possible in an unjust society’.

Her character is a public defender trying to save a young man from prison and, knowing nothing of the US penal system, she says she is discovering how corrupt the system is while working on the play.

But even with such a tough subject, Dervla Kirwan says she ‘walks into rehearsals with a big smile because I love the work I do, I love acting, I love the atmosphere in the room…I’m really excited to be at The Young Vic Really excited! And in a great play with an amazing, young female director, Kate Hewitt.’

Since talking to her, my excitement levels have gone up, and my tickets are booked.

After a few acting jobs in her native Ireland a friend told her about a play she should audition for. She did and she got the part. The play, Billy Roche’s Handful of Stars, however, was in London’s legendary Bush Theatre, which meant the teenage Dervla coming over here with her mother to step up to the big league - No easy feat for someone so young. The play had, ironically, been turned down in Ireland but was getting lots of critical acclaim and attention here, and Dervla was seen as one to watch. She says that ‘having that media spotlight shining on you from an early age is not easy, and you need a good support network.’ With her mum around she came through unscathed and spent the next few years commuting back and forth from her

Since his arrival to the UK he has participated in many group exhibitions in London and ‘Out’ is his third solo exhibition.

Yoyne’s artwork stands out from others because of his intriguing use of found objects that he gives new life to.

He says, ‘I use a variety of objects from traditional canvases to recycled furniture, mirrors, frames and fabrics.

My main medium is undiluted acrylic spray paint and I use small blocks of canvas or roller stencils to layer the surface of my paintings. Then I might draw shapes on it and fill them with colours. I often use found objects either as the ‘canvas’, or to form a collage in which they meld with the paint.’

How Yoyne discovers these ‘objects of ephemera’ depends on his mood and where he may be: ‘They have their own history which weaves its way into the body of my work. I get them from flea markets, charity shops or simply come across them when walking around London’ The artist’s inspiration, he reveals, comes from, ‘sights, smells, views, situations, reflections, people I meet…

Does VC hero Basher Bates get your vote?

A DECORATED Second World War corporal and ‘true Camberwell boy’ could be the next recipient of a Southwark blue plaque.

Corporal Sidney Bates was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross, the UK’s highest military honour, for exceptional bravery in France saving his men from an enemy defeat.

Bates was stationed in Normandy, with the Royal Norfolk Regiment, who were holding part of the Perrier Ridge, near Burcy, from the Germans.

The ridge was of strategic importance, as it overlooked the enemy’s supply lines.

On August 6, 1944, Bates was commanding the right forward section when it came under attack by around 60 SS Panzer fighters.

As the enemy drew closer and began to pick off his men, Bates’ close friend called Tojo, who was carrying a machine gun, was fatally shot.

The Corporal’s 57-year-old nephew, Chris Bates, explains what happened next: “Sid picked up the gun and advanced amongst the enemy firing continuously from his hip trying to halt their advance over his men and mates.

“He was hit by machine gun fire a few times but regained himself only to keep advancing and laying fire down on the enemy.

“Mortars fell around him to try to stop his advance. He fell to the ground but continued to fire while the enemy retreated.

“He survived for two days in the forward medical hospital.

“One stretcher bearer, Ernie Seaman, who brought Sid in from the battlefield, said he had bullet wounds in his legs and stomach, and shrapnel wounds from the mortars through his throat.

“Whilst laying in the field, Sid had wrapped himself around his machine and continued to fire at the enemy.”

When he died, the corporal had only been in France for two months.

The allied forces retained their strategic position on the ridge and further losses were averted after the battle.

It was one small victory, amongst many, that helped the allies ultimately win the war and achieve peace in Europe.

Bates was born on June 14, 1921, in Camberwell to Frederick ‘Fred’ Bates and his wife Gladys at their home in Crown Street. He was brother to Frederick, Alfred, Albert, Gladys and Patricia.

“Sidney was a quiet unassuming lad but a happy prankster, and because of his quiet nature he usually got away with it,” says Chris, who has fond memories of visiting his grandparents

in Camberwell’s Crawford House and hearing about his heroic uncle.

The Bates’ family was well known, having roots in Camberwell as far back as the 1700s, and also through his father’s living as the local rag-andbone-man, who kept his horse and cart at stables off Wyndham Road.

Bates, a carpenters’ labourer, nicknamed ‘Basher Bates’ due to his prowess in the ring, joined up in the summer of 1940, telling his mother: “Don’t think I’m brave. I’m scared.”

After having his last drink in The Sultan public house with his family, he headed to the coast to join the

Normandy landings at D-Day. Two months later he would be dead.

Bates was one of 181 servicemen awarded the Victoria Cross during World War Two, collected by his grieving parents at Buckingham Palace.

But his death was not the only wartime loss they suffered.

Later, their home on Councillor Street was destroyed in the Blitz, and a concerned Winston Churchill wrote to the authorities to ask if he could provide financial assistance to the hero’s family.

Since then, Bates’ actions have been

commemorated with a bench in Camberwell, a Commonwealth War Graves Commission headstone and monument in France, and featured in in countless documentaries and histories of the Second World War. Bates’ sister, Pat, is his only stillliving sibling, but Chris is one of many relatives, some still in Camberwell, keeping his legacy alive, and hope a blue plaque will be next.

As a stonemason by trade, Chris says he was honoured to lay the stones at Bates’ memorials at home and abroad.

than 4,000 other fallen allied soldiers.

“Sid’s VC was awarded not only in his honour but in honour of all who served and suffered during the world wars,” says Chris. “Even though he was from very humble background his actions changed the course of many lives and saved many lives.

“It is so important that we continue to remember what sacrifice these young lads made to give us a better world to live in.”

As the epitaph on Corporal Sidney Bates VC’s headstone reads: ‘His parents proudly remember him as a true Camberwell boy and a loving son.’

No, my morning cuppa was not spiked with some hallucinogenic; I have, however, been taken on a guided tour of the Jamyang Buddhist Centre by Jane and Fabiana who told me and my Veggie Guru Fiona all about the centre’s history and the community events they run there that include, walks, meditation, yoga and cookery workshops. But while Fiona was asking deep, existentialist questions of our hosts I had luncheon on my mind, writes Michael Holland.

Jamyang is in a former courthouse that has seen various IRA members and the Krays go through its doors, but now boasts visits from His Holiness The Dalai Lama, who declined to sit in the throne made especially for his visit but sat on the

gompa floor with his followers, citing, ‘I am just a Buddhist monk.’ Jane imparted a stream of interesting information on the building’s history and how it became a

centre for Buddhism as we went from room to room, finishing at the old cells that are now used for overnight stays, but with the freedom to leave after breakfast.

The end of the tour found us in the vegetarian café where they source food as locally, organically and ethically as they can and where delicious aromas had been escaping from and tantalising me for quite a while. It was time for lunch and a little palate livener first; Fiona went for a Fennel Tea, while I chose an Earl Grey, which we supped as Chef Ilaria talked us through the dishes that are cooked fresh daily. Fiona quickly pounced on the Sweet Potato & Coconut Curry, whose scent I’d been keenly aware of as we walked around. I, on the other hand, felt it right to have a starter first so began with the Celeriac and Apple Soup with organic Sourdough Bread. It was a thick, warming soup that would have been quite enough for lunch if I’d eaten all the lovely bread provided. But no, I was saving myself for the Quiche of the Moment, which was broccoli. This warm flan was encased in light, crumbly pastry, and surrounded by an array of salads: red onion and apple, cucumber and broad beans with a seed dressing, spinach with an oil and herb dressing, another with petit pois, and all very flavoursome. Fiona’s curry came with brown rice and chick peas and she also added the salad option. She was very complimentary about it all.

Everything looked so fresh and enticing, and enticed we most definitely were. Not having the soup to start meant my lunch partner was ready and willing

for some cake, of which I had to beg for a small taste. It was so light. I think it was only the blueberries on top and within that stopped the whole thing from floating away!

Our time at Jamyang was one of interest and joy. Fiona bought a cookbook, Jane gave us guides on visiting London’s green spaces, and I came away with a press pack of forthcoming events - some of which we will partake in. Jamyang is open to everyone, there is no evangelism and no expectations when you visit, just freshly cooked, wholesome, vegetarian lunches, many of which are vegan.

Last weekend, our Dulwich Hamlet reporter, Ben Henderson, travelled to Champion Hill to find out what plans the landlords have for a new stadium and canvassed fans for their opinions.

ast weekend, Meadow Partners held a two-day consultation event at Dulwich Hamlet FC’s Champion Hill Stadium bar, during which they outlined their plans to construct the club’s new ground.

intimated that the council were also enthused by the application plans during a private consultation last Thursday.

They were particularly impressed by the construction of new sports facilities. It appears that all parties are, at long last, singing from the same hymn sheet.

The event was promising in some respects – Meadow appeared genuinely eager to work with the club in order to reach a compromise satisfactory for all parties. However, some fans were unconvinced by the plans.

WHY SUPPORTERS HAVE RESERVATIONS

BACKGROUND

For those unaware, Meadow’s application proposes the construction of over 200 new homes on the current site of Champion Hill Stadium. The football club will move to the soon-to-be renovated adjacent Astroturf, which will become their playing pitch. On the Astroturf’s east side, Meadow will build the club a new clubhouse: multi-use sports facilities (gym, squash courts, etc.) and a stand. Furthermore, terraces will be constructed on the three remaining sides of the new pitch.

But why are the club relocating after such a monumental battle to reclaim the ground over the past year? Well, volunteers who have dedicated their time to renovating the stadium have concluded that the current ground is simply not fit for purpose. Continuous repairs are not a viable option, as this route would sap the club’s already depleted revenue stream. Therefore, the club must move out, and Meadow’s proposal appears to be their best and only option.

Fisher regain summit spot

FISHER CLIMBED back to the top of the SCEFL Premier Division table last weekend with a hard-fought 1-0 win at sixth-place Sheppey United.

Dean Harrison’s side almost went ahead eight minutes in when the returning Richie Hamill’s corner was headed off the woodwork by Andrew Mott.

Meadow’s consultation showed supporters that their ‘new’ and inclusive approach is genuine – either that or they have an excellent new PR strategist. But, despite their slick approach, the key issues concerning many fans remain unresolved, generating palpable anxiety.

However, given the club’s predicament this may be the best option supporters can hope for. These fears may well be eased as greater clarity emerges regarding the stadium’s design. All parties are keen to emphasise that nothing has been decided yet.

But Dulwich fans will not rest easily until they know the future of their beloved club for certain.

DULWICH HAMLET claimed a point at Concord Rangers last Saturday but it should have been much more as they search for a first league win of 2019.

Hamlet struck the woodwork twice, had a goal controversially chalked off and could have had two penalties against promotion-chasing Rangers.

Gavin Rose’s side, playing with the wind at their backs after the break, went close in the 65th minute when Sol Pryce – who was making his debut after signing on loan from League Two Swindon Town last week – saw his effort saved by Sam Beasant.

With seven minutes left, Quade Taylor appeared to be brought down in the box, but the referee instead awarded a freekick and Anthony Cook’s effort came back off the crossbar.

Less than a minute later, Nyren Clunis beat Beasant but not the post before the ball bounced behind off the goalkeeper’s head. From the resulting corner Taylor again looked like he was fouled but this time play was waved on.

Incredibly, the drama was far from over as Nathan Green headed in only to see the linesman’s raised flag deny him.

Hamlet then could have lost a game they deserved to take all three points from when, in injury-time, Ahmed Abdullah’s effort hit the woodwork with goalkeeper Preston Edwards relieved to see the ball bounce clear.

The point leaves Hamlet nineteenth in the National League South table, five points above the relegation zone.

They host Welling United at Champion Hill this weekend. Kick-off is 3pm.

The club have set a target of Grade A status for the new stadium – which would require a minimum capacity of 5,000, among other criteria. Suggestions have been put forward for lowering the pitch below ground level, in order to allow the surrounding terraces greater

immediately impressed by the iPad signin process and helpful staff on hand to offer explanation. It felt as if Meadow genuinely valued the opinion of the club’s supporters. Most surprising of all was the appearance of Meadow big-shot Andrew McDaniel – once vilified as the face of Meadow’s profit-seeking – but now willing and able to converse with supporters as partners, rather than pests.

A Meadow spokesperson said: “We very much enjoyed the opportunity to collaborate with DHFC and meet local residents, football fans and politicians.

“We were delighted that there was much support for both new homes and a new stadium on the site and that there was strong support for our increased level of affordable housing.

“We look to bring forward a planning application in the near future.”

The language emanating from the club’s hierarchy reinforced the impression that Meadow’s attitude has changed. Tom Cullen, Dulwich Hamlet Director, spoke of the “overwhelmingly positive” discussions between the club and the developers. Furthermore, Tom

Furthermore, the club has posited a number of measures that will ensure the new stadium is one of the most ecofriendly in London.

However, all parties are eager to clarify that the stadium plans are very much a work in progress – everything is still to be negotiated and nothing is set in stone. The only thing that both Meadow and the club agreed to be certain is that “the club will be setting the specification”.

Moving forward from here, Meadow aims to submit the application to Southwark council by the end of this month, and hopes for its outcome to be determined by this summer. If all goes to plan construction will begin in latesummer 2019.

Despite the positive attitude of all those on the inside of negotiations, an undercurrent of anxiety ran through the supporters that I spoke to. The main concern seemed to be the size of the proposed stadium. The 5,000-capacity target mooted by the club caused raised eyebrows among a number of supporters, many of whom were unconvinced that the tight proposed space surrounding the new pitch would be able to accommodate such a crowd.

The plans do not guarantee cover over three sides of the stadium either – another sticking point for a number of fans. One supporter bemoaned the seeming lack of ambition that the proposals show – an Astroturf pitch is not allowed in the Football League, and so Dulwich would only be able to rise one division higher than their current standing in National League South. Others projected a sense of loss at the inexorable demise of a stadium that they hold so dearly, and expended such energy to reclaim.

EDDIE HEARN said Ted Cheeseman had “the heart of a lion” but must “improve technically” after the first defeat of his professional career last weekend.

Cheeseman was aiming to add the European super-welterweight title to his British belt but lost a unanimous decision to Sergio Garcia.

Bermondsey’s Cheeseman, 23, went into the contest confident he would deliver a first professional loss in 29 bouts to 26year-old Spaniard Garcia. But Garcia dominated the fight and won on a scorecard of 119-109, 119-109 and 115114.

Garcia landed with precision throughout and went close to a knockdown in the seventh before Cheeseman rallied in the next.

But Garcia never looked like relinquishing control as Cheeseman’s

winning run stopped at fifteen.

"Ted Cheeseman deserves so much respect and credit," Hearn told Sky Sports.

"He's 23 years of age, and I don't think I've seen anyone try so hard to the final bell when they're so far behind in the fight.

"He was so tired, but I just think that he gave it everything. Never in that fight was he not trying to win the fight.

"Unfortunately he came up against a brilliant champion in Sergio Garcia.

"Ted made mistakes in the fight, he was getting hit much too easily, he didn't jab enough. Maybe [being] tense, maybe believing your own hype that you can just overpower people, you can just walk people down, you can outwork them.

"What you saw was [Cheeseman] coming up against probably a world-level fighter who is incredibly fit. After three or four rounds, I'm thinking, 'he's got to break him'. He was fresher than Ted Cheeseman.

"Sometimes you step up from British to European level, and you're not good enough, you're not ready, and ultimately that's what happened to Ted Cheeseman."

MEMEBERS OF Bermondsey’s Tokei Judo Club travelled to Dartford for the Kent Open recently – with Sveta Purisova the star performer.

It was the first competition of the judo year and the first-ever competition for several competitors who had only taken up judo in the latter half of 2018. The Kent Open is a competition exclusively for nonblack belt graded players. It is additionally banded by weights and belt colours to give everyone a taste of competition at their own level. Tokei sent down a large team of eight competitors supported by coach Neno Avelov.

Despite valiant efforts and several early wins, Badru Louial (back row, centre) narrowly missed out in his bronze medal fight.

The stand-out achievement of the day, however, was Purisova’s (front, second

Peckham made the perfect start, Kladji Cani rolling home after five minutes and it was 2-0 a minute later when Adrian

Butler ran onto a through-ball to finish.

That pair combined again fifteen minutes in but Butler couldn’t finish Cani’s cross and it went downhill from there.

Peckham conceded a penalty but goalkeeper Larry McArdle saved Steve Gillett’s effort, only for the linesman to flag and signal an infringement. Gillett made no mistake the second time.

It was 2-2 and again the hosts scored from the spot, Gillett making the most of his first bite at the cherry this time.

“But he was shipping too many punches. He was trying at some point to break Garcia’s will but that will wasn’t going to be broken. It was a wonderful performance by Garcia, his first fight outside Spain and he deserves full credit.”

THE FIRST weekend of the Surrey County Age Group Championships saw notable successes for Southwark Aquatics Swimming Club.

Sister act Anastassia Beletskaya, 13, and ten-year-old Anna were also competing, with Anna narrowly missing out on a place in the 100m freestyle final.

“When you consider that just qualifying for the County Championships is incredibly tough, the fact our swimmers were achieving PBs and all finished within the top 22 of their age group in the county is an achievement to be proud of,” said club chairman John Ferguson-Smith.

Next up is the second round of the Championships on February 9 and 10.

The action moves to the London Aquatics Centre – where Southwark Aquatics will be hoping for another podium finish.

Personal bests and club records fall for Southwark Aquatics Twenty-two swimmers are representing the club over the course of the three Championships weekends, but it was an intrepid six who headed to Guildford on January 26 and 27 to compete in a total of thirteen events.

Cue a wave of personal bests, club records smashed – and a podium finish.

It was an utterly focused Teddy Kinsler, 14, who made it into the final of the 100m breaststroke and then swam out of her skin to achieve a new personal best, set a new all-time club record and bring home a silver medal. In a spectacular weekend for Teddy, she also competed in a further four events, achieving PBs and club records in the 400m freestyle and 200m individual medley – where she also came sixth.

Meanwhile, there was a new club record in the 100m freestyle for Igor Buben, 11, a personal best and tenth place in the 200m butterfly for thirteen-year-old Freya Demetriou-Fox, and a fantastic PB for pocket rocket and one-to-watch Millie Ayling, 10, in the 100m breaststroke.

So profoundly awful a spectacle was the third-round clash, that the reporter found himself ruminating on philosophy, specifically the origins of Taoism. Yin and yang: everything must have its opposite.

Saturday at The Den was the yin to the yang of the previous weekend against Everton.

Millwall versus Rotherham probably wasn’t as bad as Morton versus Airdrie – “90 minutes of the most tedious, excruciating football imaginable", as Callum Baird of The Herald put it – but if there were worse games at the weekend then spare a thought for those at them.

There were no sparks off the pitch this time and very few on it. Rotherham centre-back Richard Wood did try to ignite some kind of flame by jumping two-footed close to Jordan Archer in the 55th minute. The incident sucked players from both sides into a brief maelstrom, but it was resolved and Wood was shown a yellow card.

The incident had sent a pulse of energy through the crowd and the home fans reacted as if a pack of hounds scenting blood. Wood also went nose-to-nose with Lee Gregory in a separate flashpoint but again that was resolved peaceably enough. Wood seemed determined to be the villain but, in the eyes of home fans, that would be Gregory later on.

Millwall had started with positive intent, Jed Wallace and Ben Marshall back and looking to link up with Gregory. Marshall clipped the top of the bar early on.

Ben Thompson was the most advanced midfielder and brought his usual energy, but not enough end product.

With their 5-4-1 formation Rotherham had brought a suit of armour to a gunfight. Mahlon Romeo flashed in a shot but it was easy for goalkeeper Marek Rodak. That was to be the Lions’ only effort on target in the game, though they would go closest to winning it.

These sides had recent history. In 201415, Millers boss Steve Evans had the last word that season when he told Gregory to “look forward to League One, son, and keep your trap shut” after his side’s win over Reading sent Millwall down.

Gregory had said he hoped Rotherham would bottle it.

Rotherham were promoted last season

and, like Millwall last year, were tipped to go straight back down. They have to battle and scrap for every point and manager Paul Warne ekes out every last bit of potential from his squad.

After they had barely threatened before the break they could have taken the lead in the second half. First Archer came for a corner and missed the ball, which bounced to Michael Smith to volley towards goal, but Marshall had sensed danger and blocked on the line. That led to the melee after Wood’s lunge at Archer.

Soon Smith had another excellent chance as he drifted behind Millwall’s defence to shoot and Archer had to palm the ball away.

Warne, as he had done when his side defeated Millwall 1-0 in August, played Semi Ajayi in midfield and the midfielder had a chance from inside the box but blazed over. Then Rotherham claimed his shot had come off Jake Cooper’s arms and for the second week in a row the defender got the benefit of the doubt.

The contest stuttered into the final ten minutes when Millwall’s best three chances came. Marshall first delivered a cross that Clark Robertson headed just past his own post. Then the on-loan Norwich winger headed a cross from the opposite side from Wallace inches past

The best, and worst, was saved for last.

It stemmed from Ajayi giving possession away in the Lions’ half and Wallace scampered after the loose ball and got there first. The home fans hoped Wallace had seen Gregory’s thrust through the middle into the Rotherham box. He had, squaring a ball that begged to be tapped in with Rodak scrambling across his goal. But instead Gregory, under some pressure form Ajayi trying to make up for his error, seemed hesitant and scuffed the ball wide.

It was a fitting end for a game lacking in quality.

Baird finished his report by describing a “shell-shocked crowd”. Lions fans weren’t that, just frustrated and underwhelmed.

JED WALLACE has admitted he would have swapped a place in the fifth round of the FA Cup for six points from their last two league games.

As unromantic as is sounds, that is the reality for Millwall, who will be relying on staying in the Championship to be able to keep players such as Wallace at the club.

The Lions dropped two points at Middlesbrough by conceding a lastminute penalty, before Lee Gregory left the goal gaping with the final kick of the game against Rotherham.

In between those Championship matches, Millwall added another famous page to their FA Cup scrapbook by knocking out Everton with a last-minute winner.

Wallace is frustrated that Millwall continue to ‘linger’ in the bottom half of the table, currently among a clutch of six clubs, a group that at the moment looks like it will provide the three to be relegated.

Wallace is keen to stress that Millwall’s players want to “reward” supporters with cup scalps, but the Lions are not taking their eyes off Swansea before their lastsixteen meeting with AFC Wimbledon the following weekend.

“The FA Cup is a bonus. If you’d offered me six points against Middlesbrough and Rotherham and a 3-0 home defeat to Everton I would have taken it,” Wallace said.

“The league is always the be-all and endall for me. The cups are brilliant and they reward the fanbase. The reason the players love those games is because it gives the fans days like Everton at The Den. They’re the memories that young Millwall fans are going to grow up with now.

“That’s what you want as a player, to be able to give back to fans on cup days.

“But for the players the league is the priority and we go to Swansea looking for three points.

“It’s frustrating, it’s four points in the space of two weeks that we’ve thrown away. We should have won Saturday and we definitely should have seen the game out at Middlesbrough.

“We’re probably where we deserve to be because we’ve switched off at key moments and not taken our opportunities at the right time.

“Rotherham made it a set-piece game.

I’m not pretending we’re a fluid, pass-itout-from-the-back team, everyone knows we’re not, but they’re very extreme, very, very direct. They’re the biggest team I’ve ever played against.

“Saturday will be completely at the opposite end of the spectrum against a footballing team. But we’ve had some good away performances that we can build on.”

Wallace is enjoying the freedom playing as the right-sided attacker in a new 4-3-3 formation, with Ben Marshall on the left wing getting forward to support Gregory.

Wallace scored Millwall’s goal against Boro, and thought he had laid on the winner for Gregory against the Millers.

“I like it, I can get higher which is what I want to do,” Wallace continued. “I want to be playing on the defenders’ shoulders.

Greggs can play that role because he can do everything.

“It’s very rare these days that you get a nine-and-a-half, people are usually a target man number 9 or a number 10 linking up, but he can do both. He performs the role very well.

“Marshy naturally comes inside on to his right foot which means I can get higher, like the Middlesbrough goal, I was in a position where I could break forward and with my pace that suits me.

“We’ve put in some great performances in that formation. But we’ve only come away with two points, and beat Everton, off those performances.

The Middlesbrough one is the one we need to replicate this weekend and hopefully that can get us three points.

“That was the best we’ve played all season. Maybe I should have done better late on when Thommo [Ben Thompson] picked me out but they are the fine lines we haven’t been on the right side of. We need to be more ruthless and if we keep

up the form we’ve had the last six, seven games I’m sure come the end of the season we’ll be pushing towards the top half of the table.

“We’ve been playing well, apart from Blackburn and Rotherham when we were poor. Those games left a bitter taste.”

Millwall wanted to add another striker in January’s transfer window to take the pressure off Gregory, who has been the figurehead of the attack with Tom Elliott and Tom Bradshaw injured and Steve Morison being used off the bench.

Marshall and Alex Pearce joined on loan but a move for Middlesbrough striker Rudy Gestede didn’t come off.

Wallace understands why it was so difficult to make a signing and explained he expected this campaign to be tougher than 2017-18.

“I always knew, and I said it at the start of the season, that it was going to be difficult because we set such high

standards last year and people thought that maybe we’d be pushing towards the top six,” Wallace said. “That was maybe always going to be an unrealistic target when there are clubs like Forest who have spent £30million yet are struggling.

“The problem now is prices are through the roof. If anyone leaves Millwall we’ll have to spend a lot to replace them because they know you’ve got that money. It’s the old domino effect. It happened when Liverpool paid £35milion for Andy Carroll. They’d got £50million for Fernando Torres so everyone knew they had that money.

That’s the way it works.”

Wallace, though, believes the club were clever last month with their acquisitions.

He said: “Marshy is a massive addition for us and Pearcey with his leadership as well. Everyone knows what a great player Marshy is and what a great lad, I was over the moon when he came back.

“We’ve got real competition for places now. Fergie [Shane Ferguson] can’t get in the team now and he’s had an outstanding season. But me and Thommo were really good against Middlesbrough.

That competition is what we need to progress as a club. That’s the way it works.

“With people like Tunni [Ryan Tunnicliffe] and Fergie pushing us it’s going to make us all want to play well. It was difficult for the manager because we didn’t have the numbers or personnel to change formation. Now we’ve got four really good midfielders – Thommo’s come back in great form – and wide players to play the three up front.

“You need that strength in depth and at times we’ve not had that available. For this club to establish itself in the top twelve of the Championship you have to have that ruthlessness and competition for places.”

RYAN LEONARD is calling on the Millwall squad to earn their pay packets over a crucial month that could define their season.

The Lions travel to Swansea on Saturday before two more away games in February at promotion-chasing Derby and Hull. They also play twice at home against Sheffield Wednesday and Preston.

Millwall have collected just eight points away from The Den out of their total of 30 in the Championship this season, though half of that haul has come from the last two games on their travels.

Millwall lost 2-1 to ten-man Swansea in the reverse fixture.

“We seem to say it most weeks in the Championship that the club we’re facing is recently ex-Premier League or has played in the Premier League,” Leonard said.

“It’s going to be a very tough game against a team with very good players.

They showed their quality when they were down to ten men and it was a difficult afternoon for the lads.

“We have to do what we did at Middlesbrough and more and aim for a clean sheet and the win.

“It’s going to be all hands on deck this month and players need to be ready, whatever team the gaffer picks.

“We’ve got quite a few games away from home this month and we’ve not done great on the road this season.

That’s something we need to sort out over the next few weeks.

“Our job is to be ready, that’s what we get paid for, and hopefully we can start on Saturday and take three points from the journey there.

“The fans are going to turn up in numbers as they always do, even for the long journeys. We need them there and then we need to repay them with three points.”

Harris takes his side to Swansea this weekend where he will pit his wits against Graham Potter, who made his managerial name with Swedish club Ostersund.

Former Southampton and West Brom defender Potter took Ostersund from the fourth tier to the top flight and into the Europa League before taking over at Swansea last summer.

Harris finished his playing career at Southend before returning to south London to take charge of Millwall’s under-21s in 2013.

“I had the opportunity to go and play abroad, yeah, at various times,” Harris said this week.

“There were quite a few interesting places in Europe and Asia.

“But I never wanted to go because of family. I didn’t want to go and play for money, I just wanted to play.

“I was fortunate to have played here for twelve seasons and then fortunate to play for a team I supported as a kid in Southend.

“Graham had the opportunity to coach abroad and manage abroad and he did a fantastic job. He’s brought that experience back to English football and he’s making a name for himself here.

“I came through a different route coaching the under-21s here.

“There are different ways of doing it, there is no right and wrong way. It’s about being afforded an opportunity and when you get an opportunity you grasp it.”

NEIL HARRIS says he might switch back to 4-4-2 at the Liberty Stadium this weekend – which could mean a start for Steve Morison.

Morison and Lee Gregory haven’t started up front together in the league since December 15 when Millwall lost 3-2 at Preston.

Harris has played 4-3-3 the last three games and has players vying to fill the midfield and attacking positions.

Shane Ferguson and Ryan Tunnicliffe found themselves back on the bench despite impressive displays in the FA Cup win over Everton. “He has time and time again come on and made an impact in games. There was a spell before and after Christmas when he came on against Preston, Ipswich, the home games when he came on late and helped us see them out, that’s invaluable. In the Everton game he comes on in the 90th minute and wins a free-kick that leads to a goal.

That nous is crucial, buying cheap freekicks whether you’re chasing a game or needing a goal to win it.

“I’ve enjoyed him having that role within the team. He’s understanding that it’s a good position to be in at his

age in Championship football, still having that importance to the group.

But I won’t hesitate to start him.

“I’ve started 4-3-3 the last few games but going 4-4-2 is certainly a possibility this weekend.”

Tom Elliott was hoping to be back in full training this week but this match comes too soon for him, as it does Conor McLaughlin.

Recruitment department focus on summer market

MILLWALL WON’T be dipping into the free-agent market this season – with recruitment focus having already switched to the summer.

Lions boss Neil Harris didn’t get the striker he wanted in January and will instead wait until the opening of the next transfer window to strengthen his squad again.

Millwall are currently light up front, and experienced players like Joe Mason, released by Wolves last month, and

Gabriel Agbonlahor are among a number of English forwards without clubs.

Harris has picked up out-of-contract players previously, but only those, such as Ryan Tunnicliffe, who were monitored over a number of windows rather brought in after a snap decision.

Millwall will need a replacement striker if they lose Lee Gregory on a free transfer next summer. There are also doubts over the long-term Lions futures of Jiri Skalak and Fred Onyedinma, while full-backs Conor McLaughlin and James Meredith could move on after losing their places in the side this season.

The club were keen on Middlesbrough’s Rudy Gestede and

Michael Smith of QPR in January but were frustrated in their attempts to add attacking reinforcements.

Harris was at Loftus Road on Tuesday night to watch QPR take on Portsmouth in their FA Cup fourth-round replay and the recruitment staff will build up profiles of targets between now and May. Millwall will hope to persuade Ben Marshall to join permanently in the summer, but much of their transfer business will depend on if they have retained their place in the Championship.

Harris has ruled out picking up free transfers in the meantime.

few and far between. I have my thoughts on what we need for the summer and the recruitment department are working towards that.

“You need to see players and know players. If the recruitment department switches off now then you’re missing valuable match time.

“Scouts will be out watching games, staff will be out watching games. It’s important that we’re building towards the summer because we’ve got players out of contract, we’ve got players here on loan and we’ve got players who might move on to pastures new for whatever reason.

“We’re certainly going to need to add to the squad in the summer.”

JED WALLACE has offered an apology to Millwall fans after the 0-0 draw with Rotherham last Saturday – and vowed to try to make up for it at Swansea.

The point left the Lions 20th in the table, just five points above the bottom three ahead of their trip to the Liberty Stadium this weekend.

Millwall have five league fixtures in eighteen days from Saturday, six games in total in that time with their FA Cup tie at AFC Wimbledon.

Neil Harris’ side are 20 points off their pre-season target of 50 – which they believe will be enough for safety – with seventeen Championship games left this season.

“I saw a stat that the ball was out of play of play fourteen minutes more than usual against Rotherham,” Wallace said. “So apologies to the fans, hopefully they managed to stay awake in the cold. The pitch was bobbly, they were pressing us everywhere.

“It was one that we should have won but hopefully we’ll be looking back at it at the end of the season and it’s a point gained.

“We are where we are for a reason but we’ve got a great togetherness and the fans are right behind us as well.

Unfortunately we didn’t give them enough to cheer about last weekend but I know Saturday we’ll have another good following in Swansea.

“We’ll do everything we can to get a result for them.”
