A MILLWALL fan will walk side by side with West Ham supporters to help raise money for little Isla Caton’s cancer treatment.

Nick Hart, a member of Millwall AMS supporters’ group, is bravely taking on a nine-mile sponsored walk alongside his rivals to help three-year-old Hammers fan Isla, who suffers from neuroblastoma.

The little West Ham supporter’s story has touched the hearts of people across the country – including Millwall fans, who jumped at the chance to help.

Last week, the News reported how Lions fans put their rivalry aside to help Isla’s family raise the £192,000 needed to send her to America for a potentially life-saving vaccine.

A vindication of the planning process

T

HE REVISED plan for the redevelopment of Elephant & Castle shopping centre is a victory for campaigners, but as ever, the devil is in the detail.

Developers Delancey appear to have listened to the demands of the protestors and the local councillors, who rightly argued that the original planning application was just not acceptable.

This is a vindication of the planning process and shows what can be achieved when people get together and fight for their community. If the council had just accepted the original application or indeed simply rejected it, then the turnaround on addressing the protestors’ main objections may not have been so speedy.

Unsurprisingly, the main concern was ‘affordable housing’ and by only proposing 33 homes at social rent equivalent, Delancey were not even complying with either Southwark’s own policy for Elephant and Castle, nor the emerging Build to Rent policy.

Local councillors were right to make this abundantly clear in their objections. The fact that the revised plans have 116 homes at social rent is a real victory, but this will be watched closely, as many will want to ensure that these are not ‘affordable rents’ , meaning they will be rented at discounts of between fifteen and 80 per cent of market rate. It appears from the revised plans that Delancey’s commitment is clear, with the homes being managed by Southwark Council or another registered provider.

The demands from councillors were again steadfast on affordable retail, arguing that providing ten per cent across the development was acceptable but more ‘adequate protections and support’ should be offered to traders, including ‘interim provision and a right to return.’

The revised plans now have a box park for displaced traders during the demolition, with a multi-lingual community engagement officer to provide hands-on support. Also a ‘re-visioning of Pastor Street to create a vibrant, affordable, mixed commercial environment’, and protection for the bingo hall.

Southwark Law Centre (SLC), working with Elephant Amenity Network, were very vocal in getting the right deal for the business community and the bingo hall in particular.

The hall, visited by 7,500 people a week, is a lifeline for many elderly residents in Southwark and across south London. With a lease that extends to 2025, Patrick Duffey, managing director of Palatial Leisure Ltd, has vowed to refuse any offer to buy him out. The council have previously not ruled out seeking a CPO (compulsory purchase order), forcibly to buy Palatial Leisure out of its lease, and sell the land onto Delancey to ensure the demolition could go ahead.

Let’s hope that the major changes by Delancey to their plans satisfy all concerned.

But given the many ups and downs that have taken place over the years on the Elephant and Castle regeneration scheme as a whole – nothing is ever plain sailing.

Schoolmates become the youngest duo to row Atlantic

A PAIR of old schoolmates have become the youngest duo to row the Atlantic – raising £50,000 for charity in the process.

Oli Glanville, 22, and George Randell, 23, were among the competitors in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, completing the epic 3,000-mile row from La Gomera in the Canary Islands to Antigua in 37 days, nine hours and 46 minutes.

The friends – who called themselves the Oardinary Boys – were the tenth crew to complete the race and the second pair across the finish line, finishing just under two hours behind another duo who broke the world record.

They rowed for two hours with the other resting on an almost non-stop rotation and completed the challenge much faster than anticipated, having expected to be at sea for between 40 and 60 days.

George, who lives in Dulwich, took on the challenge to raise money for the Against Malaria Foundation, while Oli, who lives in Vauxhall, raised funds for Alzheimer’s Research UK. The challenge put the friendship of the pair, who have known each other since they were ten and attended primary and secondary school as well as Oxford University together, to the ultimate test.

George, who celebrated his 23rd birthday at sea, said: “The one thing pushing us on each stroke of the way was the growing charity total.

“It gave meaning to our madness and the motivation to keep going even when we felt like our bodies were giving up.”

Basic council tax to rise 2.99% with 3% social care precept planned

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL tax payers could see their bills rise by almost six per cent from April.

The council is planning to raise basic council tax by 2.99 per cent this year – the maximum amount they can increase it by without triggering a local referendum.

In addition to this, the local authority is also proposing a three per cent adult social care precept to tackle social care pressures.

If given the go ahead, it will mark the third year in a row council tax has been raised – following a seven-year freeze

prior to this.

Councillor Fiona Colley, Southwark’s cabinet member for finance, modernisation and performance, said the tax rise would help generate funds for adult social care, children services and education support services in particular.

“As we go into this year we are facing £12.2million of cuts to funding from the government and enormous spending pressures, particularly in adult social care, children services and education support services,” she told the News.

“We have an ageing population that needs looking after, people are living for longer with long-term health conditions, and there are children who need support with special education needs so as well as that £12million now, the council is facing about £40million in pressures in

demand for services.

“We are faced with the choice of having to make cuts to services and putting up council tax; we do propose to put it up by 2.99 per cent which will raise £2.95million.

“It’s always hard – no one wants to see their council tax bill going up – but we really felt these services were so important that we did need to make that difficult choice this year and we will still be the eighth lowest in London.”

Cllr Colley said the increase would equate to about £1 a week for most people’s bills – but that some rents for council tenants should go down by about £1 a week.

Mrs Jones was born in Dulwich and worked in children's homes and schools before becoming a foster carer five years ago.

Her daughter said a funeral at St Giles Church in Camberwell was attended by hundreds.

“At her send-off there were so many of her past children, some as old as 40 and some still in school, that she had worked with through the years that kept in contact.

“Many will say she taught them to do something and better their lives.”

Ms Jones said Jamaican detectives involved in the case were difficult to contact and are still yet to charge anyone with her mother's murder.

Tragically, the family had even a video of the grandmother’s last moments on social media.

According to a report from Jamaican police, Ms Jones was walking down Red Hills Road, St Andrew with Lincoln Francis, 26, at around 10pm on 10 June.

Witnesses said they heard 'loud explosions' that sounded like gun shots.

Ms Jones and Mr Francis were found lying on the ground.

Mrs Jones had been shot in the side and was pronounced dead at a hospital around an hour later, at 11.25pm.

Mr Francis had been shot twice and died in surgery.

A post-mortem found Ms Jones had died of shock and haemorrhage from multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and upper body.

Basic structural strengthening of the blocks, without any further work, could cost £13.6 million and would still require all kitchens and bathrooms to be removed and all residents to be temporarily re-housed.

A second option includes fixing the leaking pipework at an estimated £18.4 million. Including new lifts,

roofs, insulation, water pumps and lighting comes to a projected £23.9 million.

If all of these works are carried out with a sprinkler system, landscaping and outdoor lighting, the project could hit £27.9 million.

But demolition is still an option.

If the entire estate and 220 homes were rebuilt, the project could cost £59.9 million.

Murder of Peckham foster carer Norma still unsolved

THE DAUGHTER of a Peckham foster carer murdered on holiday in Jamaica has demanded answers at her mother’s inquest.

Norma Jones, 59, (pictured) was shot dead in St Andrew, Jamaica, in June last year while walking with a friend.

The mother of three and grandmother of six and was due to leave the island eleven days after she was killed.

Speaking after her mother's inquest at Southwark Coroner's Court, which recorded a verdict of unlawful killing, her daughter Lorraine Jones said: “You go on holiday and you come back in a box, it's not what you expect.

had taken the “lazy option of ramping up council tax to the max”.

“The council could choose to make reasonable savings in administrative costs and refuse to make expensive and unnecessary gestures,” she said. “We have identified lots of areas where costs can be shaved off.

“Liberal Democrat councillors will be proposing an alternative budget where we show that the council has other choices and does not have to put up council tax for residents who are already struggling.”

Residents can apply for relief on their council tax bill in certain circumstances, such as if you are a foster carer or a pensioner on a low income, and children leaving care in Southwark are now exempt from paying.

Police appeal after double stabbing

POLICE INVESTIGATING a double stabbing in Peckham which killed one man and left another injured have arrested and charged a male suspect with attempted murder.

Police were called to Atwell Road in Peckham Rye on Monday, 29 January, at 2.30am after reports of an altercation and stabbing. They found Juan Olmos Saca, aged 39, with stab wounds to his chest.

Another man, aged 27, was found with knife injuries to his head and abdomen.

Mr Saca was taken to hospital with critical injuries and died on Sunday, 4 February. The other victim’s injuries were not life-threatening and he has now been discharged from hospital.

Six men were arrested at the scene with one subsequently charged and the five others released. The deceased’s next of kin have now been informed and a postmortem is due to be held.

DC I Tony Lynes, from the Homicide and Major Crime Command, said: "We are appealing for anyone with information regarding what has proved to be a deadly attack to get in touch.”

Fixing Ledbury Estate could cost £27.9m - or mean demolition

FIXING THE Ledbury Estate’s cracked tower blocks and fitting a sprinkler system could cost £27.9 million – and demolition is still an option, Southwark Council confirmed this week.

Last Friday, a consultation with residents on the future of the estate came to an end. Now Southwark Council will start developing future plans for the buildings, due to be published in the autumn.

As well as the visible ‘cracks and

inside the building, and new water pumps to prevent loss of pressure in upper floor flats.

At Tuesday’s council meeting councillor Richard Livingstone said a good relationship between the Ledbury’s residents and council had developed.

Danielle Gregory, a resident and member of the Ledbury Action Group, said: “We will be closely scrutinising the council’s actions over the coming months to ensure that full and open transparency is maintained, as well as ensuring genuine dialogue and consultation with all residents.

“We feel that it’s vital that the residents have full access to all information necessary to make a decision on the future of the towers.

“We also believe that that final choice should ultimately lay with the residents, rather than the council, and we will be exploring options around this, in line with existing policies.”

A report outlining the Council final recommendations and outcome of the residents’ consultation will be published in September – October 2018, but as yet there is no clear timeframe for works to be undertaken.

In a touching move, Millwall supporters asked to donate their ticket refunds from last month’s Leeds United match to her cause.

And now Nick, originally from Bermondsey, has already raised more than £1,000 in donations to take on a sponsored walk from West Ham’s training ground at Rush Green to London Stadium for the Stoke City game on April 14.

“It’s a heart-wrenching story so I think people really do empathise with the family,” the 57-year-old told the News.

“We will be walking side by side for a great cause; I think it’s kind of reached beyond conventional Millwall loyalties and I think it can show that some things are bigger than football.

“Like people are saying: cancer has no colours. I think that’s a nice phrase.”

Nick said the response to his fundraising campaign had been “amazing” and joked he would wear his Millwall shirt on the day “if the money is right”.

A FAMILY festival is set to turn the former Surrey Quays printworks into seven fantasy worlds for a day, including a ‘unicorn land’, ‘the biggest inflatable zone in the world’ and a gaming area.

The Monstrous festival experience, pitched at kids aged four to fourteenyears-old, will be open for one day in July and has capacity for 5,000 people.

Mothers Against Guns UK founder back campaigning after health scare

GUN CRIME campaigner Lucy Cope is renewing her campaign for ‘life means life’, and calling on the government to increase the mandatory sentence for firearm possession in public to ten years, as violent crime escalates across the capital.

Ms Cope, who founded the UK chapter of group Mothers Against Guns, became a prominent antifirearm campaigner after her son Damian was shot dead in 2002 outside a central London nightclub.

In 2004 Mothers Against Guns successfully lobbied the government to make it an offence to carry a replica gun in public, and set a mandatory sentence of five years for illegal firearm possession.

In recent years she had taken a step back from campaigning due to a health scare, but a spate of violent deaths and gang-related violence across London compelled her to campaign again.

Now back to health, an energised Ms Cope told the News: “I’m coming back with fire and I’m ready to take this campaign all the way to the top to Theresa May - I’m not afraid.

“We need to find out who is bringing arms into this country.

“Weapon trading is big business and it is not just happening in Peckham or London.

“Gun and knife crime is happening

in Birmingham, in Nottingham, in Leeds and I can’t turn my back on it.

“If we don’t fix it we’re looking at London becoming the Bronx.

“The minimum sentence for possessing a firearm in public should be ten years - and life should mean

life.

“Losing a child has a ricochet effect on the whole family.

“We’re the ones living a life sentence, and the grief kills us mentally and physically.”

‘Gangs, Guns and Knife Crime’ event held at Peckham Seventh Day Adventist Church on Saturday, 3 February.

Ms Cope was joined on stage by Yvette Graham-Brown, whose son Javarie died ten years ago to the day,

and Ms Iffat Rizvi from Mitcham, whose daughter, Sabina, was shot dead just minutes after leaving a police station in Bexley in 2003.

The event also saw a heated debate take place about the ethics of stop and search.

New street named after scientist from Ecuador ELEPHANT AND CASTLE

A NEW street in Elephant and Castle will now be named after Ecuadorian scientist Pedro Vicente Maldonado, after a three year campaign.

spearheaded the campaign to give the passage between The Strata and the railway line the new title of Maldonado Walk.

She told the News that the on-going regeneration of Elephant and Castle presented the opportunity to nominate new names for new streets.

As the area has a sizeable Ecuadorian

community, she felt it was an apt way to recognise their heritage.

She explained: “I’m Ecuadorian, and he was a very, very important Ecuadorian person in our history who had a connection with London.

“So we started the campaign and three years later we have Maldonado Walk with the help and support of many

people including Dan Taylor from Southwark Council, and the Walworth Society.”

Pedro Vicente Maldonado was born in 1704 in Riobamba, Ecuador. During his lifetime, Maldonado was a famous physicist, mathematician, astronomer, topographer and geographer.

He died in London in 1748 is buried

in St James’ Church in Piccadilly.

Councillor Linforth-Hall said several families living and working in Elephant and Castle are from the same area as Maldonado, and wanted to help commemorate him.

The official unveiling of the new sign will be held on Saturday, 10 February, with Ecuadorian folk dancing.

136 council tenants have condition - but more may not have come forward

HOARDERS IN Southwark are now clearing the clutter with the help of a pioneering new support group.

According to Southwark Council, 136 council tenants in the borough have hoarding disorder.

But it is likely that many more have not yet come forward for help.

In what Southwark Council says is the first of its kind in London, people with hoarding disorder can now join weekly drop-in sessions with specialists Caroline Harrison and Dr Victoria Bream from the Maudsley Hospital’s Centre for Anxiety Disorders and Trauma.

According to the NHS, hoarding disorder is classed as ‘where someone acquires an excessive number of items and stores them in a chaotic manner. The items can be of little or no monetary value and usually result in unmanageable amounts of clutter.’

Dr Victoria Bream said: “There are a lot of people out there with hoarding problems and it's a condition still associated with stigma and shame.

“A group like this where there is no barrier to coming is really great.

“Anyone can attend and you can come once or many times.

“Hoarding is a very difficult problem to crack on your own, so to have support from other people is really powerful.”

The support group meets at Dockhead Fire Station, so fire officers can talk to sufferers and make sure they are comfortable with safety checks in their homes.

Lee, who did not want to give his last name, and who suffers from the illness, has been to the group several times.

He says: “My thing is storing books and papers, I don't let anyone into my home because of my hoarding, not even my family.

“This group is good for sharing practical solutions, for people looking to move on from their hoarding.

“It's purposeful and a good balance between challenge and encouragement.”

Councillor Stephanie Cryan, deputy leader and cabinet member for housing at Southwark Council, said: “It’s really important that we treat this disorder with the sensitivity and

range of appropriate support services it requires. With this kind of easy-toaccess service, which combines the expertise of the fire brigade, the council, and mental health specialists, we can keep residents safe and ease the distress they are suffering.

“I am really pleased that people are

already coming forward to seek help.”

A SINGLE mother has been left struggling to get her daughter to school after their tandem bike, which they treat as their ‘family car’, was stolen in Camberwell.

Katy Thompson, 39, and her nineyear-old daughter Adaray use their Thorn child back tandem to go everywhere including school, camping trips and festivals.

But they have now been left without their “family car” after it

was stolen from a bike stand outside Cowling & Wilcox arts shop in Orpheus Street on Monday, February 5, between 3.30pm and 4.15pm.

Katy, an art technician and bicycle mechanic, said there was a small note on the stand warning people there had been thefts – but it had been covered by another bike.

“I locked it up outside the arts shop and was literally 30-40 minutes but when we came back it was gone,” she said.

“The stand is cut but it’s not obvious – there’s a slice where they can move the stand apart and move the lock off.

“I’m just so upset about it and I’m really angry that that stand hasn’t been removed when people have had their bikes stolen from it before.”

“It’s been everywhere with us; we’ve been camping with it, toured around Wales, and been to festivals – it’s part of the family,” she said.

“I can’t afford another bike – it was an investment. My daughter was getting a bit big for it so the idea was I was going to sell it and buy her proper first bike.

“It’s not insured because I can’t afford bicycle insurance since it’s so much every month.

“It’s going to make life really difficult; I’m thinking ‘How do I get Ada to piano after school and swimming’ – getting her around is going to be really tricky.”

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said no arrests had been made.

POLICE HAVE managed to trace two relatives of a Camberwell man found dead at his home three months ago.

Officers issued a “heartfelt appeal” for help in finding the family of John Stuart Parkin last month after struggling to trace any relatives following his death. The appeal featured on the front page of the News two weeks ago.

But two people have now come forward, whom police believe are the 62 year old’s long-lost relatives.

Mr Parkin was found dead at his flat in Venice Court, Sultan Road, by emergency services on November 21 after neighbour and friend John Barber raised the alarm.

Mr Barber, who knew Mr Parkin for fifteen years, said he got in touch with police after noticing he had not seen him for a while.

“I realised I hadn’t seen him for two or three weeks and that the recycling bin he would put outside wasn’t out there and there wasn’t a sense of life and movement,” the 50-year-old health consultant told the News.

“I asked about and nobody had seen him so I took the decision to phone the police and report that I had genuine concerns for his wellbeing.

“I met the police and ambulance service and sadly we found him dead.

“He had been there for quite some time; I honestly think if I hadn’t taken the initiative he could still be there now.”

The healthcare consultant said he believed Mr Parkin had worked as a lift engineer before his retirement and that he had been married more than once and had children.

“He was a

member of the Wyndham and Comber tenants’ and residents’ association, which he would attend very regularly,” Mr Barber added.

“He was also part of the defend council housing movement – something he was quite passionate about – and a local campaigner on housing issues.

“He was a vocal individual and would voice his opinion but he kept himself very much to himself.”

Police said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding Mr Parkin’s death and that a file was being prepared for the coroner.

His funeral has been arranged for 9.30am on Thursday, February 15, at Camberwell New Cemetery.

IN A victory for campaigners, Elephant and Castle developers Delancey have committed to providing 116 homes at social rent, a Box Park for displaced traders, and protection for the much-loved Bingo hall in revised regeneration plans submitted to Southwark Council on Monday.

As reported last week, Delancey had confirmed to the News it would table a revised offer after Southwark Council’s planning committee voted against passing the proposals in their current form, and delayed their decision until March at last Tuesday’s meeting.

The planning committee meetings had been marked by campaigners protesting outside.

On Monday Delancey outlined their new offer in full.

A statement sent to the News said: “Delancey has listened to the concerns and issues raised by the local community, Ward Councillors and Southwark Borough Council on our initial planning application for the redevelopment of the Elephant and

New library set to be twice as big

EAST DULWICH: Grove Vale Library is expected to almost double in size when it moves to a new development this year.

The library is set to be relocated to a housing and retail development currently being built opposite East Dulwich station.

The new library will have a floor area approximately double the size of the existing one and will provide internet facilities, study spaces, a meeting room, and a bigger space for children’s activities and events.

It will also provide a range of digital services including IT learning sessions, access to e-books and emagazines, and digital tablets for loan.

A cafe is also part of the new designs and there are plans for longer opening hours. It is hoped the library will be open before September 2018. Library provision at the existing site will continue up until the opening of the new library.

WALWORTH: Costa Coffee is planning to open a cafe near East Street Market.

A planning application to turn Cash Loans, on 269-271 Walworth Road, into a Costa was approved by Southwark Council last year. The loan shop had been in operation since 2011.

A new community consultation is due to take place for 21 days. A spokesperson for Delancey said:

“We look forward to continuing to work with all the relevant parties to reach a mutually acceptable and positive result for all, and a conclusion which delivers the new town centre and essential improvements to the transport, education and housing provision for the community in and around Elephant and Castle.”

Pupils make dough for charity BOROUGH

CHILDREN FROM schools across Southwark put their cooking skills to the test to help raise enough money to provide 1,812 meals for families in need.

Youngsters from Charles Dickens, Notre Dame, Boutcher, and Ark Globe sold their own home-made vegetable soup and hand-made bread at Borough Market to help raise money for food waste charity FareShare.

Pupils were first taught the art of creating seasonal soups using surplus vegetables at a special workshop with BBC Saturday Kitchen’s home economist Michaela Bowles, as well as how to bake ciabatta at Bread Ahead’s bakery school in the market.

Then, on Tuesday, February 6, they set out their stalls and sold their homemade soup and bread at Borough Market’s third annual Winter Sale.

Along with other schools in London, they managed to raise £453 – enough to provide 1,812 meals for families in need across the Capital. The Winter Sale, run as a partnership with food education charity School Food Matters, has so far taught more than 100 students soup and bread-making skills. All proceeds from the programme go to FareShare.

Tanya Murat from Southwark Defend Council Housing said: “Delancey previously claimed none of these changes were viable.

“They've changed their tune only because of the campaign.

“We need to see genuinely affordable and secure council homes on this site and a real voice for the community.

“That means much more detail and time to consider the changes.”

Cllr Mark Williams, Southwark Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and New Homes, said: “We welcome the new offer and we look forward to working together to find a solution that works for everyone.

“In addition to delivering a new town centre with 1,000s of new jobs, tube station with the introduction of escalators to replace the current lifts which are unreliable and at capacity, and a home for UAL’s London College of Communication, they are now proposing more traditional social rented housing, a replacement bingo hall, along with more support for traders including temporary accommodation on Castle Square. We are now carefully considering these proposals and look forward to hearing what local people think of them.”

ITS STUFFED Walrus has long been held in the affections of south Londoners, but now the Horniman Museum has found a new cult following on the other side of the pond.

On January 31, the Forest Hill museum was ranked fifth in the New York Times’ list of the ‘world’s coolest museums’.

The popular attraction was the only museum from the UK, and one of only three from Europe, to join such esteemed company. The full entry explained: “Do you like mummies? Aquariums? Are you interested in exploring a whole gallery dedicated to music?

“The Horniman Museum has all that and a lot more, with 250,000 naturalhistory specimens, a conservatory, sixteen acres of gardens to wander through and 3,700 objects that you can touch and handle.”

Proud Londoners were delighted by the accolade and none more so than the famous Walrus himself, who tweeted: “I spent all night packing and now I'm ready to take the USA by storm”, before sharing a number of holiday snaps from New York City and San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge.

Janet Vitmayer, Director of the Horniman Museum and Gardens, said: “We are really excited to feature in this article in the New York Times, and to be the only UK venue included is a real honour.”

The museum first opened in 1901, when Frederick John Horniman opened his house and collection to visitors.

Today it includes internationally renowned collections of musical instruments, a butterfly house and history collection.

Children ‘will be breathing cleaner air straightaway’

The wall of pre-grown ivy will create a barrier between road pollution and the school’s playground.

Its ivy leaves collect pollutants which are then washed away by rainfall. As the ivy continues to grow, so too does the amount of dangerous pollution it can capture.

The school, which is set on the busy main road Grove Vale, hopes the screen will protect its pupil’s health and become a haven for birds, bees and other wildlife.

According to scientists at Lancaster University, installing green screens can reduce street-level concentrations of nitrogen dioxide by as much as 40 per cent, and up to 60 per cent for particulate matter. These dangerous pollutants can cause asthma and lung disease.

Although the EU legal limit for nitrogen dioxide is 40 micrograms per cubic metre, research by London Mayor's office shows that many schools are in locations which exceed this level.

Parents and teachers at Goose Green School were delighted to hear that Sadiq Khan has donated £11,794 from the Greener City Fund towards the project.

A POP-UP shop housing an indoor market and community space, and fronted with a huge image of historic heroine Ada Salter, has been turning heads in Bermondsey.

Community Opportunity, a new social enterprise and charity, opened its Bermondsey Uprising store opposite the market square in Southwark Park Road last Thursday.

The shop, which offers everything from toys, gifts and accessories, to clothes and crafts, has been launched as part of a wider project to breathe new life into the Blue market.

Businesses and entrepreneurs can set up their own stalls within the shop and the community can use the space to host events.

Emma Snow, founder of Community Opportunity, has been given funding by United St Saviour’s Charity to run the venture for an initial ten-week trial period.

But, if successful, it is hoped it could become a permanent fixture in the area.

Speaking to the News, Emma, 38, said: “We saw that the space was unused and the market was developing as well so, as local people, we wanted to get involved and create something that really benefits the community and is fun and inviting and has both practical things you can buy and fun activities for people of all ages.

“We’ve already managed to increase the market stalls in the Blue on a Saturday from about four to eighteen including all our individual stalls in the big marquee.

“They are letting us use the market place for events and markets when we want such as Zumba and an Indian percussion workshop which are both run on Saturdays for free.

“The shop has been very well received and we are inviting proposals from the community about how they would like to see it used.”

The pop-up shop has been named after Bermondsey Women’s Uprising – a famous women’s strike which Ada Salter, former mayor of Bermondsey and first female mayor in London, helped organise in the early 1900s.

Historian and author Graham Taylor donated a number of his Ada Salter Pioneer of Ethical Socialism books to be sold in the shop at a discounted price.

PARENTS WILL get the chance to have a look around a new Bermondsey primary school during a series of open days.

John Keats Primary School will open as a two-form entry school with a 30-place nursery in Rotherhithe New Road this September.

It will initially take on a total of 60 children in two reception classes, growing by 60 children year on year.

The school will be part of the

Communitas Education Trust, which also includes John Donne School in Peckham, and is expected to meet the shortfall in primary places in Southwark.

Some of the team from John Donne, including headteacher Nick Tildesley, will transfer to John Keats once it opens.

“The approach to education at John Keats will be similar to that at John Donne,” said Mr Tildesley.

“We will ensure that children have access to a creative and inspiring curriculum right throughout their primary education.”

The school will offer a breakfast club and after-school provision, and will work closely with the local community to provide support to parents who need it, as well as a resource which can be used by community groups.

Mayor honours those who lost their lives in Holocaust

THE MAYOR of Southwark honoured those who lost their lives in the Holocaust and other genocides in commemoration of last week’s Holocaust Memorial Day. The remembrance event at the Imperial War Museum was attended by 150 people.

Southwark Mayor, councillor Charlie Smith and other councillors were joined by ambassadors from the allied forces, who fought against the Nazis during WW2.

Together they placed wreaths at the Soviet War Memorial and Holocaust Memorial Tree in the museum’s Geraldine Harmsworth Park.

Holocaust survivor John Dobai told his moving life story before representatives from Southwark’s community lit memorial candles and Rabbi Lionel Rosenfield led the Memorial Prayer and Kaddish, a Jewish mourning prayer.

Getting in on the conversation MEN IN Southwark who find conversation difficult because of health conditions like Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s and stroke are overcoming their difficulties thanks to a ‘conversation group’ set up by speech and language therapists at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Adult Community Services.

The speech and language therapists arrange for patients to meet regularly at a local coffee house in Peckham. The men are encouraged to practise conversation skills like asking questions and making comments to show interest in people so they regain their confidence.

Tony Croft, 67, a retired caretaker from Peckham, who has Alzheimer’s says: “Sometimes when I am talking things come back to me, things that happened 20 years ago. I’d forget things and get cross. I wouldn’t feel like talking to anyone.

“When I’m with the group I’m talking to people like me. I’m speaking a lot better now. I’ll go out shopping with my wife, meet the neighbours and people in the street and I’m talking all day.”

Eric Arthur, 44, had a stroke which led to a stutter and problems holding conversations. Eric also had thoracic cancer and is living with liver problems and epilepsy.

Eric says about the group: “I used to be alone and cry all the time but now I have other people to talk to.”

AN INNOVATIVE clinic has helped nearly 350 patients to get a faster diagnosis with cancer and other serious conditions since it opened a year ago.

confident and together have attended events run by Reconnect, a local charity.

The charity specialises in larger meeting groups for people with communication problems to socialise.

Jonathan Bose, Speech and Language Therapist, Southwark Community Neuro-rehabilitation Team, says: “The

groups are aimed at men who are quite private and wouldn’t ordinarily go out meeting people. The groups are small so may be less overwhelming for the men and help them to progress to socialising with the wider community in the future.”

“It’s not match making but when we set up the groups we’re thinking about

someone’s interests and background.

The speech and language therapists act as a springboard, suggesting comments and questions and different topics of conversation to highlight shared interests. We ask the men to swap phone numbers and encourage them to contact each other in between groups.”

Let’s talk organ donation

LONDONERS ARE being urged to talk to friends and family about organ donation, as new figures show less than half of people have ever talked about it.

Guy’s and St Thomas’, which carries out a fifth of all organ transplants in London – almost 2,500 over the last ten years, is supporting the new Words Save Lives campaign which has been launched by NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT).

NHSBT found that while more than 80% of people support organ donation, only 49% have ever talked about it.

The campaign aims to increase the number of donors from black, Asian and minority ethnic communities in particular.

Figures show that out of the 1,336 people currently awaiting lifesaving transplants in London, almost two thirds (811), are black and Asian. Organs from people from the same ethnic background are more likely to be a close match and give the best chance of a positive outcome.

Gemma Gayle (pictured), 30, received a simultaneous kidney and pancreas transplant at Guy’s Hospital last year, after

her kidneys failed. She recently got married, and is enjoying a new lease of life.

Gemma says: “The wait on the transplant list is nerve wracking because you never know when the phone rings if it will be that call from the hospital telling you a transplant is available.

“Receiving a transplant is an amazing gift and I am so grateful to my donor for allowing me this second opportunity to live a relatively normal life.”

Marlies Ostermann, clinical lead in organ donation at the Trust, says: “Over the last ten years, nearly 800 people in London have died waiting for a suitable donor organ to become available because families refused to donate as they didn’t know what their relative wanted.

“It’s crucial for people who want to donate to tell their families. That way, if the worst should happen, it will make the decision to donate your organs much easier for your family if they know that is what you want. We need their consent for donation to go ahead, even if you have signed the Organ Donor Register.”

The clinic provides quick access to a range of tests for patients over the age of 40, whose symptoms are non-specific but concerning. Thanks to its success in Lambeth and Southwark, the clinic will expand to offer services to patients in Greenwich, Lewisham, Bexley and Bromley. Geraint Jones, advanced nurse practitioner at Guy’s and St Thomas’, says diagnosing cancer at an early stage means patients have a greater chance of recovery.

T’S BEEN great to welcome local schools, including St Michael's, to Westminster in the last few weeks.

It is always great to hear Southwark kids’ questions – and it is fascinating that, whatever their age, things like air quality, housing and opposition to Brexit nearly always come up.

Local children's ideas about what I do in my role as their MP varies in two significant ways. Firstly, many seem unaware of the volume of casework for local people.

Between last June’s election and Christmas my team tried to help almost 2,500 local people and yet their questions focus mostly on the Commons. Secondly, many do not see the difference between being elected and being able to achieve all the change you may want; the difference between being in Government vs Opposition. Councils often get the blame for national Government policy and funding failures, with some kids blaming councils for not building enough social housing. I describe what Southwark is doing already with decimated resources, but also explain that the council has to work within national planning policy that needs changing at Westminster and that our borough alone has had over £200 million in direct funding cuts and millions more removed from housing budgets under Lib Dem/Tory Coalition Governments since 2010.

It was also great to host the Southwark Chambers of Commerce at Westminster and hold a range of public meetings for local people on issues including anti-social behaviour in Bermondsey, poor management by housing associations near Borough, and transport concerns across Southwark. On top of my weekly face to face surgeries (every Friday, 4pm at my Jamaica Road office), I also continue to hold extra sessions. The latest is today (Thursday 8th February) at the Leathermarket JMB offices on Leathermarket Street, SE1 3HN from 5pm.

Next week is ‘recess’. Whilst Parliament isn’t sitting I get to spend even more time on our side of the river. On Monday I’m joining the night team from St Mungo’s to go and speak with people sleeping rough in our area, like the homeless lady sleeping by the West Lane war memorial raised with me last week. Since 2010 homeownership has fallen and the number of homeless has risen dramatically as a result of Coalition welfare policies. St Mungo’s and others do an invaluable job, particularly in these coldest months, trying to help people off the streets.

I will also be joining local police to carry out a community ‘weapons sweep’. These searches often find blades hidden away for future use, or dumped after attacks. Knife crime has risen locally sadly, but Southwark police resources have been dramatically reduced since 2010 and prosecution rates are flat-lining. Our police work extremely hard in very tough conditions to try and keep us safe. The Government should recognise their efforts and provide them with the numbers, resources and powers needed to do their job.

We are always looking for volunteers to help, too. You don’t need any qualifications; all you

need is commitment and enthusiasm. We will provide the training.

What more can be done for the Blue?

AM I the only one to notice that the Blue - Southwark Park Road shopping area has totally gone down hill?

It’s a dead and alive hole, no shops, where is the Curtain shop, shoe shop etc?

Where have the market stalls gone?

Why can the Council not get the stalls to come and give them half price pitch allowance until they are established?

All you have now is basically two stalls one fish and one veg - great just what we are short of, I don't think so.

They have now opened a community shop with a few bits and pieces in - arts and crafts - not much use and whoopee-do you get a free bag with your purchase. If I had one of those bags I would turn it inside out for the shame of carrying this around.

Why can we not have the market open seven days a week Sundays could be open for a boot-sale style market everyone has items for sale? Cafes would prosper, local shop would prosper with all the shoppers.

Why has it gone down hill when

Give it another twelve months and they will all be closed down which is a shame So come you Blue Bid team get your act together! Call a public meeting and invite locals to give their views of what kind of stalls they want to see in their market square. I have not seen a meeting being held for years, only when you had the so called Lion erected - looks like a scalded chicken bones on a plinth - that was the last meeting and it looks like it was the last straw.

It is for me, I only go there for my hairdressers, nothing else there interests me.

Buoys vandalism is risking lives

MORE HAS to be done to tackle vandalism in Bermondsey, particularly when their stupid behaviour risks lives.

On a number of occasions the lifebuoys have been vandalised along Bermondsey Wall East right through to just past the Angel Pub.It is happening close to residential areas, so it is surprising that this behaviour is going unnoticed.

This morning when I went to visit, I spotted 7 lifebuoys that were vandalised, near the City Cruises mooring, this is the most I have ever seen. It seems to be very sloppy that little appears to be done to prevent this behaviour, and people are turning a blind eye.

Once I spotted a lifebouy in the net of a basketball court.

People who are caught vandalising lifebuoys risk having a huge fine. Please be vigilent and love where you live.

ave you ever thought about what a difference it would make to your health and bank balance if you gave up drinking fizzy drinks?

This month, your local NHS and Southwark Council are encouraging all residents, especially children, to give up fizzy drinks for 28 days. The ‘Fizz Free February’ campaign is an appeal to parents and carers especially, to encourage children to join in.

A healthy lifestyle is about more than just kicking your taste for fizzy, high sugar drinks, but it’s a good place to start.

Sugar can have very serious, but very preventable effects, on the health of young people. Fizzy drinks also include ‘diet’ or ‘low sugar’ varieties which are damaging to teeth as they are highly acidic and over time will wear away the surface of your teeth.

Tooth decay is the main reason why children aged between five and nine years old need a stay in hospital.

Also, fizzy drinks are by far the biggest factor in causing dental erosion among teenagers.

Fizz Free February will hopefully motivate you towards drinking fewer sugary drinks for the rest of the year.

Did you know that you could put on a stone in weight every year by drinking just one 330ml can of fizzy drink a day? Most fizzy drinks contain six or more teaspoons of sugar per 330ml can.

Also you’d save around £438 a year if you stopped drinking one bottle of soft drink a day for a year (£1.20 per bottle, 365 days a year).

So there are plenty of good reasons to make your home Fizz Free this February. To join in, just pledge to give up fizzy drinks for 28 days on the council’s website (www.southwark.gov.uk/health-andwellbeing/public-health) and tweet using #gofizzfree. You can also take part by filling out a short survey about your fizzy drink habits.

Betties wow at Playhouse My companions have recently been ‘taking a nap’ at some shows whilst I struggled on alone braving the ‘thea-tah’, as ‘Betty 3’, the brilliant Beatriz Romilly, calls it in Jen Silverman’s Collective Rage - A Play in 5 Betties, writes Susan Hallissey.

Was this going to be another one of those nodding off nights? Kapow!!!

No! Thank the heavens above!!! Tonight was a riot of energy, laughter, pathos and surreal theatre. This is my kind of theatre, and perfectly served by five awesome actresses. Not to mention the digs at theatre-going audiences – one of my favourite gripes! What’s not to like?

From the moment ‘Betty 1’ (Sara Stewart) spoke the energy was high voltage – and we were in the action with a woman in a loveless marriage obsessed by the news.

The ‘5

Bettie’s’ stories unfold and mesh together in a tale of lost loves, sexuality, being needed and loved, but mostly being ‘Betty’! With a great soundtrack and choreography that moved the scenes along, ‘Collective Rage’ is more like an event, a happening, as we watch five women from different walks of (New York) life reach various potentials. Some through breaking down first.

Jen Silverman’s genius is like unscrewing the top of someone’s head and peering in – and deciding to join in and lap it up or miss out on a hilarious yet touching journey. All the ‘Bettie’s’ momentum and passion meant that there was hardly a moment to spare. I’m not about to untangle the messy ‘Bettie’s’ plot except to say it links together beautifully.

This was a great ensemble piece, each ‘Bettie’ starring in her own life via a dip into the play within a play in ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ with the audience at times in hysterics.

The ‘Bettie’s’ have restored my faith in ‘thea-tah!’ If you squirm at women being proud of their sex and sexual organs it may not be right for you… But - wow - was it lively, ingenious and thought provoking! How many women out there don’t realise their full potential and take a back seat in life? Not for the fainthearted – a celebration which is in your face and unapologetically so!

As always The Rose Playhouse has a unique feel, blending its theatrical history with modern preservation that lends nicely to their contemporary Shakespearian productions, writes Rosie O’Connell...

The latest of these productions is Alex Pearson’s Macbeth. Already the shortest of Shakespeare’s tragedies this production has cut back the action to an 80 minute run time and while this is not necessarily a negative, there were times when it felt that without prior knowledge or understanding of the text you may end up slightly lost.

Perhaps due to the condensed text Jesse

Ayertey’s Macbeth doesn’t quite hit the mark in terms of exposure and vulnerability, but makes up for it with his anger and desire. Parys Jordon does very well in a supporting role as an array of bold characterisations throughout, each distinguished enough for clarity. Esther Shanson’s Lady Macbeth is ruthless and damaged, and the rest of the cast do well too, flitting from role to role with relative ease.

The stripped back production works well, the backdrop of the old theatre has a haunting aspect that works perfectly with the narrative, however, added props such as mobile phones feel unnecessary.

With such a simple retelling, the time

Wilde fans get a treat

In this production of Oscar Wilde’s Lady Windermere’s Fan the fan theme starts with the ornately painted stage curtain and continues with a rather grand fan-like window and doorway to the Windermere’s terrace, writes Michael Holland...

As Lady Windermere sits in her house admiring the eponymous fan - a present from her loving husband - she has two visitors. First is Lord Darlington, a fervent admirer of her Ladyship who hints at gossip of her play-away husband spending the family coffers on a woman of few morals. Next in is the Duchess of Berwick, who does no beating about the bush but tells her friend outright that Lord Windermere is bang at it with Mrs Erlynne and that she should be happy he isn’t bothering her for his conjugals when she should be conserving her energy for keeping house and bringing up a small child - albeit with a team of servants.

In her naïveté Lady Windermere refuses to believe them until she checks the household accounts and sees a lot of money going out to the woman named in the rumours by her ‘friends’. This sets off a domino effect of incidents and mishaps that could so easily have been explained with just one line of honesty at the beginning, but which would then have denied us an enjoyable couple of hours of Wilde’s wit and bon mots.

There is much jollity to be had from poking fun at the upper classes, today as much as it was then. We all love to see

another nail hammered into the coffin of ‘society’ and Wilde was - still is - the man to do it. Even more so when it is as much fun as this Kathy Burke directed piece. The men all do sterling work of being polite, quaffing port and smoking, but it is Grace Molony as Lady Windermere who shines; Samantha Spiro as the talked about woman who has all the men(and women) falling at her feet as she revels in her role, but it is Jennifer Saunders as Duchess of Berwick, cruising through as herself in full sail Victorian dress who steals the show.

In other news, inside the programme for was a facsimile of the original programme from the world premiere of Lady Windermere’s Fan. In 1892 it was the delightfully named Mr Nutcombe Gould who played the first Lord Darlington. Nutcombe was a wealthy rector’s son from Devon with a terrible stammer whose speech impediment, luckily, did not affect him on stage.

Jump forward more than a century and that character is now lovingly, and humorously brought to life by nonstuttering SE Londoner Kevin Bishop, an actor whose comic timing and skill with voices is legendary.

and place really isn’t that important, so minor attempts at modernisation are more distracting than anything. Either go full Baz Luhrmann or just leave it, if you ask me.

All of the key plot points are here, of course, from the witches to murder and bloodstained hallucinations, but without the depth in the text some characters’ motivation is misplaced and results in it being quite unclear. One of Shakespeare’s most enduring plays, filled with political ambition, power and drama somehow felt a tad tedious.

A

new restaurant with a difference opening up in town is always something to look forward to, especially when it is the chef from one of your favourite established places, writes Michael Holland...

So when Nico Modad left Brindisa to open up Chimichurris, a traditional Argentinean restaurant, me and Nina were delighted to be invited down to taste the best food and drink to come out of the Argentine.

Chimichurris is not in the trendy part of town, but it was full up when we were there, so people have obviously already heard good things about it. It

is a modest place that focuses on the customer being able to see Nico at work at his grills. His business partner, Federico, told us that back home everyone has a barbecue in the garden, which is where Nico first learnt his skills.

But before we got to the steak (all brought in from Argentina), we wanted to try some authentic starters first; food that we had no knowledge of and had to ask about before ordering. Which is how we got to try Empanadas, traditional pies with an intense savoury meat filling that were delicious. They were like little pasties, which is always good for the British palate, and were served with chimichurri, a piquant sauce made from parsley, vinegar, garlic, olive oil and chilli, which had a real kick and made it very addictive. I was going to eat these with a cold beer from the Argentine but Nina convinced me to have a Malbec, one of the many wines produced there now. And I’m glad she did because that robust red went well with all the different dishes we had.

We also shared Provoleta Portena: toasted fingers of bread to dip into

spiced, melted Provolone cheese, red pepper and mushrooms - something similar to a cheese fondue. Just thinking about the melting cheese still makes me drool.

It seemed that there were several customers from Argentina in to get their food fix from the homeland, and to listen to the music they remember, to breathe in the aroma of meat cooking on the grill, have a beer that brings its own nostalgic vibe, and letting themselves mentally drift back home, but Chimichurris was also half full with British people trying something new or maybe just knowing where the best steaks are to be found.

It was now Nina’s turn to drool as she watched Nico slap her Rib Eye Steak onto the griddle over the red hot coals.

She watched as he seasoned that slab of meat before picking it up and slapping it down on its other side. She sat there with knife and fork in hand because she knew that it wouldn’t be long before her medium rare steak was there before her. And when it was she could not stop talking about it.

steak. Over-excited. She exhibits the exuberance of a child at Christmas, nervously chattering about how the knife goes through like it was butter, and how it melts in the mouth and how I’ve got more chance of seeing God than getting a piece of her meat…

Not having a meat fetish myself I went for the Grilled Cod with mashed potatoes, spinach and caper sauce.

The fish, flaky and soft, floated on a sea of creamy, foamy potato. It was Heaven, and was enough to finally tempt Nina in to do a part exchange for a chunk of her Rib Eye. Both now fully sated we sat drinking the wine and chatting with Nico and Federico, two committed restaurateurs who want to introduce the wider world to the best of Argentinean cuisine and wine. I have so much respect for people who are proud of where they come from and want everyone to know why.

After a while we felt ready to share a dessert and agreed on the Walnut Pudding. On first sight it looked like a rather ornate Crème Brûlée with its crisp caramel topping, but we discovered something very different.

We found a more solid texture for the inside, and the only crispiness came from the chopped nuts. It was nice but the best bit was the dulce de leche foam that added sweetness.

After a coffee each we set off for the short walk to the Elephant & Castle feeling very content and discussing plans to revisit Chimichurris.

EACH YEAR since 2003 local people have been voting for the people, events and places they have felt worthy of a blue plaque.

Brunel’s tunnel vision VICTORIANS OFTEN come across as bunch of stick in the muds, all stiff upper lips and suppressors of emotions. But you have to give them credit when they put their minds to something they did it with panache and extravagance.

Just look around Southwark and we can see evidence of this - from the amazing zoo created smack in the middle of Walworth, full of giraffes, elephants and leopards, to the carnivals in Bermondsey, full of pomp and ceremony, and the fairs in Camberwell, which bordered on debauchery as the party rolled on for days on end.

Brunel's tunnel is not something you would typically hold up as an example of this kind of decadence, but deep in the tunnels of the 'eighth wonder of the world', plenty went on to rival the fun and games at land level.

Of course when it opened everyone marvelled at the feat of engineering accomplished by Isambard Brunel and his son Mark. So much so that 50,000 people went into the tunnel on the first day it opened and within

fifteen weeks a million visitors had ventured into the tunnel below the Thames.

However, the fifteen year project, which finally finished in 1843, encountered a major problem during its formative years. On May 18, 1827, the river burst through the walls, sending waves gushing into the tunnel.

The work to clear the tunnel took months and it was not until November of the same year that work to complete the tunnel could begin again. However, the Brunels needed a statement to say the tunnel was safe again, and no simple test of the structure or engineering examination to prove the work was ready again would suffice. So instead they threw a banquet.

The resplendent feast was a statement, not only in decadence, as those who sat in the tunnel did so with candelabra and cut-glass around them. But they listened to the sounds of the Coldstream Guards, which said to the world that the tunnel was once again safe - a statement made in a true Victorian manner.

Yet, despite the banquet, and what it stood for, the tunnel walls went again just two months later. Work continued despite this setback until the tunnel opened, and the crowds came in their droves, regardless of the problems during construction.

The Brunels were not content just to open any tunnel for Londoners to stroll through and at first it developed into an underwater shopping arcade. Shops sold refreshments but also did a roaring trade in souvenirs.

The shops were successful for a long period, but the dark enclaves encouraged some of the darker elements of the London scene.

Cutpurses, or pickpockets, thieves and prostitutes were said to have frequented the tunnel and its reputation rapidly began to go downhill.

When in trouble the Thames Tunnel Company did the only thing they felt they could, they launched an underground fairground in 1852.

It was of course no ordinary fairground. The tunnel became the stage and the arches were the viewing areas for the public.

Those who came saw many wonderful awe inspiring acts, tightrope artists, fire eaters and sword swallowers were seen regularly. But there were other amazing eclectic acts, such as Ethiopian serenaders, Indian dancers and Chinese singers.

Other acts included Mr Green the 'celebrated bottle pantomimic equilibrist' and the Montreal Minstrels, who used the tunnel as an elongated ballroom.

These and the other acts from around the globe attracted crowds from the length and breadth of the planet.

But a decade later the tunnel had once again become run down, and was a favoured haunt of drunks and tramps.

By the 1860s the tunnel was sold to the railways and it became part of London's underground railway network.

It was and is a true feat of engineering, but also played host to moments of great extravagance which, like the events above ground, showed the Victorians off to the world as great showmen.

The scheme came about after the ‘News’ approached English Heritage to get more of our history recognised, only to be told that most of our buildings would not qualify as they were destroyed in the blitz and post war era.

Working in partnership with Southwark Heritage Association and Southwark Council, over 50 of our own blue plaques have been erected.

John Keats School will be open from this September, 2018 for two reception classes totalling 60 children and will grow by 60 children year on year.

John Keats has been purpose built as a state of the art facility to meet the education needs of children in Southwark. We are very excited about the prospect of working in this amazing facility which will enhance the opportunities for our pupils and

be a model of 21st century schooling.

John Keats School came about as a result of local need for new primary school places and a desire to offer the very best education in an area where children deserve the very best life chances. Working closely with Southwark Council, Trustees at Communitas were keen to help meet the shortfall in primary places by opening John Keats School.

John Keats School is part of the Communitas Education Trust which includes the ‘Outstanding’ John Donne School in Peckham. Some of the highly experienced team,

including me as Headteacher, will be transferring to John Keats from John Donne School. The approach to education at John Keats will be similar to that at John Donne. We will ensure that children have access to a creative and inspiring curriculum right throughout their primary education.

John Keats School will be a catalyst for change in the local community. It will sit at the heart of Southwark Council’s planned development for the Old Kent Road and provide a much needed, high quality school for an expanding local population.

It is essential that John Keats School continues the traditions of the

Communitas Education Trust in providing a highly pastoral, effective and successful education experience for children and their families around the Old Kent Road. The school will offer wrap-around care from a breakfast club to after school provision. The school will also work

closely with the local community to provide support to parents who need it as well as a valuable resource which can be used by community groups.

FISHER PICKED up another point in their challenge for promotion this season after a 2-2 draw with tabletoppers K Sports last weekend.

Fisher were denied an early penalty before K Sports cleared off the line from a corner, and then Mathieu Ramsamy saw a goal ruled out for offside.

Ramsamy could have added a second after being sent through on goal, only to delay his shot.

With the match set to finish in a stalemate as it entered the 90th minute, Toyo Adeshina advanced down the right to cross, and Ramsamy slid the ball home to provoke jubilant scenes among the home fans.

That appeared to have earned Dean Harrison’s side three points, but in the 97th minute – three minutes over the allotted injury-time – Adeshina handled in the box, and K Sports levelled from the spot through James Alderman.

Sacha Hickey, 14, was turning heads as a footballer down at Millwall, but made the difficult decision to leave and concentrate on her boxing – and she hasn’t looked back since. STANSFELD’S RECENT good form continued with a fine away win at Poytn’s Fields against fifth-placed Snodland Town.

Stansfeld started brightly and soon forced the Snodland goalkeeper into action as he saved from Michael McKenna, Billy Shinners and Ryan Hassan. However, in the seventeenth minute, against the run of play, Snodland took the lead through Dave Sherwood.

Stansfeld were nearly level from the restart, Hassan crossing deep to the far post and the clearance fell to Harry Gamble whose shot hit the inside of the post and rolled along the line before being desperately kicked away.

However, within a few minutes, Stansfeld got a deserved equaliser through Gamble who reached a Lucas Hart cross and slotted the ball into the bottom corner.

In the second period, with the slope in their favour, Snodland started to apply pressure in the Stansfeld half but couldn’t create any clear chances.

In the 63rd minute, Stansfeld took the

lead. Adam Ball went on a run towards the Snodland goal, beating three players before squaring the ball to Hart who cut back inside on his favoured left foot and bent the ball into the bottom corner.

Snodland started to throw men forward in search of an equaliser but couldn’t find a way past a solid Stansfeld defence with captain Joe Bannan and Casey Killilea both outstanding.

With Snodland pressing forward it led to gaps in their defence and this was exploited in the 71st minute when Omar El-Mantawy broke down the left, got to the by-line before and crossed the ball to Shinners who shot into the top corner from close range.

Stansfeld made the game safe in the 84th minute when Shinners got Stansfeld’s fourth and his second to finish off a good afternoon’s work.

The southpaw joined Fisher some two years ago, and head coach Steve Hiser told the News she had been mixing it fearlessly with the boys in the ring, and was now going from strength to strength.

“The championships out in Sweden are the biggest in the world,” he said. “After her first fight there were coaches coming up, asking whether she had fought more than six contests, as she looked so good.”

The England camp have also taken note, with Sacha travelling with her dad up to Sheffield and Manchester to train with the squad. Already a junior ABA champ, Steve is now focusing her on this year’s upcoming ABA championship.

The veteran coach continues to turn out champ after champ, and has lost count of the number of young men

and women who have passed through his doors – “thousands” he says. Steve’s involvement with Fisher goes all the way back to 1957, and former protégés continue to visit the club, to see their old coach and pass on their experience to younger generations. One such Fisher star, Ted Cheeseman, is now making headlines on the world boxing stage after his win over Carson Jones last weekend.

The hunger still burns for Steve, and he instils that in his boxers.

Telling the News about an exciting young prospect, also called Ted, Steve laughed: “I told him if he put the hard work in, he could be as good as Ted Cheeseman. He just told me he was going to be even better!”

Hamlet reveal reason for cup postponement

DULWICH HAMLET’S scheduled London Senior Cup tie against Harrow Borough was postponed – due to the unavailability of the general manager.

The game has been rescheduled for Tuesday, February 20.

On their official Twitter account, the club explained the odd situation.

“Dulwich Hamlet are no longer in control of the stadium, we are merely tenants (6 hours per match day).

“Champion Hill is operated by our Landlords, they have a General Manager who has sole responsibility of running the ground.

“Due to a miscommunication, the General Manager is unavailable tomorrow, therefore we've had to rearrange the game (with much help and kindness from Harrow Borough).

“We trust this will be the only time we'll have to make these kinds of arrangements.”

Last Saturday, Hamlet picked up their first point in four league games, a run that has seen them knocked off the top of the Bostick Premier League table by Billericay Town.

The hosts had Kenny Beaney sent off just five minutes into the second half against Metropolitan Police, before Preston Edwards saved the subsequent penalty.

Ashley Carew saw a free-kick saved early on before Rickie Hayles’ header was cleared off the line.

Reise Allassani was next to threaten but couldn’t force the ball over the line and Nyren Clunis curled just wide.

Beaney was sent off for a handball in the box but Edwards saved Lloyd Macklin’s spot-kick.

Dean teaches Coventry a lesson

RIANNA DEAN fired a hat-trick as Millwall Lionesses made it through to the next round of the SSE Women’s FA Cup where they will face Arsenal after beating Women’s Premier League South side Coventry United Ladies 4-1 last weekend.

Megan Wynne was also on target as Lee Burch’s side comfortably advanced.

Coventry got the game underway and were looking to put their opponents under pressure from the beginning, earning themselves an early free-kick with the resulting header comfortably saved by Sarah Quantrill in the Millwall goal.

Millwall eventually got themselves into the game and in the nineteenth minute got their first goal. Georgie Giddings played the ball up to Charlie Devlin who crossed in for Wynne to tap the ball into the back of the Coventry net.

The hosts then dominated the game after their first goal. Devlin had a free-kick in a dangerous position just outside the Coventry area, but the shot was straight at the goalkeeper who gathered easily.

Millwall saw out the rest of the first half and held a two-goal cushion, with Coventry having it all to do in the second half.

Millwall kicked off the second half and within three minutes of the restart Dean got her second goal of the game. Devlin played a beautifully weighted defencesplitting ball through to Dean, who finished calmly to give the Lionesses a healthy lead.

In the 68th minute Quantrill pulled off an outstanding save, which rightly earned her a massive applause from the crowd to keep Millwall three goals ahead.

Ten minutes later, Dean completed her hat-trick. Ella Rutherford, who had earlier come on for Gaylor, picked up the ball halfway inside the Coventry half and put in a delightful cross for the unmarked Dean to head past Wood.

Coventry got themselves a consolation goal in the final moments of the game when Helen Dermody scored from the penalty spot after the referee judged Giddings had fouled Coventry’s Nikki Miles.

Leanne Cowan made a return to the starting line-up and was relatively pleased

with the performance: “I think in parts and in terms of how the game went we can be pleased that we’ve gone on and got into the next round.

“We scored goals, created chances but maybe didn’t play at our best like we have the last couple of weeks, but we worked hard throughout the game to get the goals that we needed. We can still take the positives from it, but we’re going to look back and reflect and look at what we could’ve done better.

“It was a really good cup tie because we knew they’d come at it for 90 minutes and they wouldn’t give up, which is credit to them and as a team it shows the character they’ve got. It was a really good test, they worked hard, they were physical, they were tough and they were just everything we expected them to be and we had prepared for it.

“We’ve now got to focus on the next game, which is Aston Villa away, and it’s taking it one game at a time trying to get the results we need.”

The Lionesses travel to Aston Villa next week as they look to keep their unbeaten league record intact, with kick-off scheduled for 2pm.

Meredith wants to impress new Australian boss ahead of World Cup

JAMES MEREDITH admitted he was “really excited” with the prospect of linking up with Tim Cahill again.

Meredith and Cahill played together for Australia, and both are aiming to secure a place in the Socceroos squad for this summer’s World Cup in Russia.

Cahill also advised Meredith to move to Millwall, when the former Bradford fullback was mulling over offers at the end of last season.

Meredith believes the signing of Cahill has boosted the competitive environment at the club.

“I was really excited. I had a feeling beforehand because I had spoken to him, though he hadn’t really given a whole lot away,” Meredith said.

“I thought it would be a really good move for him because he’s loved here and he knows the manager really well. He’s still a great player.

“I’ve played with the Socceroos with him and we’ve always got on really well, we’ve kept in touch.

“Before I came here I had a few options

and I spoke to him about the prospect of going to Millwall. He said, ‘Do it, it’s a great club’. He had a great time here before.

“He had other good options as well, other good Championship options. But he said there was no other place for him except for here and he wanted to come.

“It could suit him as well coming up to the World Cup to get some games. It’s a good standard here.

“He’s been great, he’s an Australian legend and he’s a fantastic guy. Him along with the other signings have given everyone a lift. People are now competing for places and you have to be looking over your shoulder a bit.

“The whole morale of the club is generally up, it’s really good.”

Meredith won his only two caps for his country in November 2015, but believes it’s a “clean slate” with the recent appointment of Bert van Marwijk.

“I’ve not heard anything but I’m just going to work hard and play as well as I can,” he said. “Hopefully I will get an opportunity under the new manager. I’ve heard a lot of good things about him. It’ll be interesting.

“On paper I definitely deserve the chance to be in the squad, if you compare me to where the other left-backs are. With

“Harrys’ a good player, I’d heard of him before from when he was on loan at Scunthorpe. Competition is good between players.

“I’ve been competing for my left-back spot for ten years, so it’s nothing new to me.”

Lions enjoy Royal parade

LEE GREGORY scored his 50th goal in the Football League as Millwall delivered one of their most accomplished performances under Neil Harris to deservedly beat Reading last weekend.

Gregory showed huge composure after taking the ball around goalkeeper Vito Mannone in the 73rd minute and finish from a narrowing angle three minutes after Mahlon Romeo’s shot had deflected in off Leandro Bacuna.

Millwall were so dominant that when Yann Kermorgant’s number went up on the substitution board in the 68th minute it was hard to remember any contribution he had made.

Jaap Stam will be worried about the sack, particularly if the trend of managers losing their jobs shortly after losing to Millwall continues. Leeds’ Thomas Christiansen was the latest victim of that quirk of statistics.

Although Millwall won so comfortably in the end, it needn’t have been as uncomfortable as it was early in the second half. Mo Barrow was really the only

Royals threat, and he almost gave his side an undeserved lead when he swerved between Conor McLaughlin and Jed Wallace to shoot across goal, but Jordan Archer got his fingertips to the ball for a fine save.

Barrow as a menace, so much so that Lions boss Neil Harris sent on the quicker Mahlon Romeo to deal with him, McLaughlin going off.

If the main objective there was the shore up the right side of Millwall’s defence, inadvertently it gave the Lions the platform to take the lead. Romeo strode

forward to make an option for Wallace, his shot looking like it was heading across goal before Bacuna diverted it inside the near post.

Reading immediately pushed up to try to gain an equaliser, leaving space down the right for Morison to stride into. Millwall’s captain chose the right option in sliding a short pass to Gregory in the box, the striker still having lots to do but making light work of the angle.

It was Gregory’s sixth goal of the season, and Harris praised the frontman’s performances this season.

“Greggors is a natural striker that doesn’t panic about missing chances,” Harris said. “He gets frustrated and annoyed with himself but he’s pleased when he’s getting chances.

“If he’s getting chances it means that he is making the right runs, getting in the correct positions.

“Goals will always come for him. Strikers will go through spells of five, ten, fifteen games when they might get a glut of goals, and then have spells when they might not score.

“We’ve got no qualms with that. His performances this season have been outstanding, much better than he’s produced in the previous two years under me when he scored bundles of goals.

"It was a great day for our club today and our fans were different class."

SHAUN HUTCHINSON is pleased with Millwall’s season so far – but still thinks they should be higher in the table.

The Lions’ 2-0 win at Reading last Saturday moved them twelve points clear of the dropzone with sixteen games left this season.

And Hutchinson is looking for the Lions to finish the season strongly.

“As much as how well we’re doing now we’re still underachieving,” Hutchinson said. “We should have more points than what we have.

“But, still, if you’d said to me at the start of the season we’d be where we are now I probably would have said, ‘yeah, first year back in the Championship, some great victories, solid home performances, I’ll take it’.

“I’m really happy where we are at the moment. There’s no reason why we can’t end the season really strongly.”

Millwall would likely be closer to the top six than bottom three had several contentious refereeing decisions gone their way this season.

Hutchinson believes the video system referee (VAR) will eventually come in and work, though not without some teething problems.

“I was watching a game on Sky and they kept stopping and starting it. As a player there is nothing worse than when there are constant stoppages,” he said. “It’s difficult to get going again and it kills the tempo a bit.

“I suppose it takes away those big decisions that might be called wrong and end up changing games. I’m sure it will be brought in fully. There will be trial and error and they’ll find out what problems there are with it. I think it will be good for the game.”

The Lions’ latest league win at Reading was arguably their most impressive this season, as they collected an eleventh clean sheet in 30 games.

Hutchinson said: “We’d like to have had a few more but I’ll take that at this stage of the season. We’ve been pretty solid, but dipped a little bit.

“We let in three against Derby, then three against Leeds, fair enough they were away games and tough games. But we pride ourselves on being hard to beat, and conceding three goals doesn’t make you very hard to beat.

“But it just shows how much of a shift the boys are putting in to get another clean sheet at Reading.

“We knew what kind of game we were going to get. They’re a big club but things haven’t been going their way.

When that happens, when you come up against a hard-working side it’s always going to be a little bit difficult.

“They had one shot on target the whole game. Away to Reading you’d take that.”

There could be several new additions ready to compete for a place in the side when Cardiff arrive at The Den on Friday evening.

Hutchinson was impressed with Neil

Harris’ January business, after Jason Shackell and Harry Toffolo were added to the defence and Ben Marshall will offer an option on both flanks.

Former Fulham centre-back Hutchinson also praised the attitude of 38-year-old Tim Cahill.

“I’ve come up against him in a few little five-asides, nothing too much. But absolute credit to him, after what he has done in the game it’s as if he’s an eighteen-year-old training for the first team for the first time,” Hutchinson continued.

“His attitude has been spot on, he never complains and his influence is definitely going to rub off on the team.

It’s great to have him around.

“All the signings we have made have brought competition into the squad. You have a few leading characters like Steve Morison, who has led the team all year, and someone like Tim Cahill is another type of player that will pass on his experience.

“We have picked up a bit with those signings.

“We had been a bit short at the back all season so we knew someone was going to come in. The gaffer has done his homework on Shacks and brought in a good lad. He has an impressive CV with what he has done in the game.

“He’s going to be an influence as well.

When he talks I listen to him, he’s played at the highest level. He played a lot of games in the Premier League and the Championship and if the gaffer calls upon him he’ll be ready just as me and Coops [Jake Cooper] are.

Lions denied Tottenham re-match after deserved defeat

MILLWALL WERE deservedly dumped out of the FA Cup on Tuesday night by a fired-up and determined Rochdale side that can now look forward to welcoming Tottenham Hotspur to their sandy pitch in the last sixteen of the competition.

Millwall were awful and Rochdale goalkeeper Josh Lillis must have been wishing for some action to warm him up at a freezing Spotland, but he never got it as

Keith Hill’s side looked far from the relegation candidates their league position makes them.

Rochdale were first to almost every ball and the way they were able to knock Millwall players off possession so easily was a feature of the night.

The pitch should have suited Millwall given how unsuitable it was to passing football, which Rochdale showed at The Den is a key component of their game.

Staff and volunteers had been working around the clock to get the surface ready for kick-off, and the result was one half of the pitch from goal to goal heavily covered in sand.

Rochdale hadn’t played a game at

home in almost a month but looked much more accustomed to the pitch and it was hard to remember a passage of play when Millwall put more than three passes together in succession.

Ian Henderson scored the only goal of the game early in the second half as Millwall created little with an attack of Fred Onyedinma and Tom Elliott who failed to make the ball stick up front and as a result the Lions defence was under pressure for most of the 90 minutes.

The Lions denied the chance of a rematch with Spurs, which is a pity as it would have been fascinating to see how much playing them at The Den

would have been a leveller.

The league has always been the priority, and there certainly wouldn’t have been any Millwall players feeling sorry for themselves on the way home, with high-flying Cardiff to visit The Den in three days.

Lions boss Neil Harris admitted that Rochdale were the better side, the only complaints he had relating to the scenes after the final whistle when some home supporters invaded the pitch.

After congratulating their players, a number of them then made their way to where the Millwall fans were housed, goading the visiting fans, and then taunting Steve Morison, who

had gone across to ask them to leave the pitch.

In the opposite stand, more home supporters confronted and abused Harris, who urged them ‘if you’ve got something to say, say it to my face’.

“I thought Rochdale fans were a disgrace at the end, I’ve got to be honest,” he said afterwards. “I’m not going to stand here as a Millwall manager and complain about a fanbase, but the way it was managed at the end – our fans were goaded, my players were treated very badly and then me and my staff were abused face-to-face – isn’t quite right.

“But that’s life, no complaints from us, we just crack on.”

With the Cardiff clash in mind, there were six changes to the Millwall sidefrom the team that had impressively defeated Reading 2-0 at the weekend, and it showed.

Three of the back four were the same, with Jason Shackell replacing Jake Cooper in the line-up. Ryan Tunnicliffe, Ben Thompson and Shane Ferguson came into midfield, and Fred Onyedinma and Tom Elliott were the front two. With Thompson on the right, the natural balance given

by Jed Wallace was gone, while on the left Ferguson struggled to do anything in the sand.

The state of the pitch, unsurprisingly, contributed to this being a scrappy

contest.

Rochdale, though, settled far more quickly than the visitors and created the first proper chances. They should have been ahead within a minute, but after Matthew Done’s shot was deflected to him Andrew Cannon fired wide with the goal gaping.

In the fifth minute Ryan Delaney got his head to a corner, but it was straight at David Martin.

Millwall then threatened and it looked like Elliott’s shirt was tugged in the box as he headed towards Onyedinma, whose own header was then tipped over by Josh Lillis.

Conor McLaughlin was close to putting Tunnicliffe through in the 20th minute, but the midfielder couldn’t make contact with the ball and Lillis collected possession.

But neither side could really put more than three passes together, and at one point in the first half both sets of fans cheered each touch as the sides rapidly traded possession, before a large cheer when the ball went out of play even prompted Dale boss Keith Hill to turn and laugh with supporters.

Callum Camps threw himself in front of a Tunnicliffe shot before Rochdale centre-back Jimmy McNulty went down in the box halfheartedly appealing for a penalty, but getting nothing.

Rochdale started the second half in positive fashion, and Martin had to save low at his near post when Cannon’s cross deflected off James Meredith, before Mark Kitching drove towards goal but there were enough Millwall bodies there to block.

But the Lions were punished in the 53rd minute, and it was Rochdale who deserved their lead when Henderson finished low from Calvin Andrew’s cross.

Harris sent on Steve Morison and Lee Gregory for Tunnicliffe and Ferguson in a bid to rescue the game.

Millwall were leaving three players up front now but were still not able to trouble Lillis.

Millwall were at least better retaining the ball in attack, but when Gregory crossed to the far post Elliott wasn’t close enough to challenge for it.

Camps fired in a long-range freekick that Martin saved, before Harris made a final attacking change, Wallace coming on for Onyedinma.

Rochdale, though, continued to fight off any semblance of a comeback as they defended with determination, the Tottenham carrot dangling in front of them.

Millwall had one half-chance in added-time, but Gregory couldn’t turn to get a shot away, before Thompson was closed down on the edge of the box to complete a disappointing night for almost 400 travelling fans.

Rivals’ clash comes with official warning Millwall

NEIL HARRIS cautioned Millwall’s clash with Cardiff City won’t be for the “fainthearted” or the “football purist” as two of the sides with the division’s lowest passing statistics go head-to-head at The Den on Friday night.

The teams drew 0-0 earlier in the season, a feisty affair when Cardiff boss Neil Warnock felt Shaun Hutchinson should have seen red for a strong tackle, and Harris claimed Sean Morrison was lucky not to get sent off for a last-man foul on Lee Gregory.

Harris stressed Millwall will have to be ready for the Bluebirds’ “size and power” in the fixture.

“I don’t think Cardiff are shrinking violets, and any Neil Warnock team I’ve played against or managed against have always been on the front foot,” Harris said.

“I don’t think it will be for the faint-hearted. We’re very low down in the passing stats in the division, and Cardiff are below us. It won’t be for the football purist, but it will be a good advert for Championship football.

“It will be two big sides being aggressive and going toe-to-toe. We want to be on the front foot, we won’t adjust our game for anybody.

We will have to raise our levels against Cardiff because they are by far the biggest team in the division and they are not afraid to use their size and power.”

Cardiff lost three games in a row over Christmas, but have bounced back and defeated Leeds 4-1 last weekend.

They are fourth in the table, just three points off the top two, and added £6million Gary Madine to their squad from Bolton last month.

Harris said: “They had a little sticky spell around Christmas that maybe forced their hand to go and do some more business. They spent almost six millions pounds on a striker and that was a little bit surprising. Unexpected? No, because of the market we live in and foreign ownership that show at the drop of a hat they are willing to bring players in at any cost.

“The size of their squad and the quality of their squad is there for all to see. They’ve been in the top four all season and they are trying their damndest to stay there.

“It’s going to be another epic encounter at The Den and another big challenge for us because, like Derby, like Wolves, I do expect Cardiff to be right up there at the end of the season.”

Millwall played on Tuesday night, the 1-0 FA Cup loss at Rochdale, but Harris made six changes for that contest and doesn’t believe the quick turn-around will benefit Cardiff.

“It doesn’t give them any advantage,” he insisted. “The game is Friday evening, if it were Friday afternoon it would be different. But the players can rest on Friday.

“It’s live on Sky at The Den, 15,000 home fans and Cardiff will come in their numbers. It will be a great atmosphere and the players will go on that pitch ready.

“They will be the most direct team we will have played against this year at The Den. We’re a big side but they are way above us, sizewise.

“We’ve got to physically compete with them. They’ve also got an experienced manager and experienced squad with some fantastic players.

“It’s another great challenge and we are in a fantastic run of form ourselves.

“Tactically, Cardiff mix it up quite a lot, change their shape before and during games. It makes no odds what we play against. We all know our roles and responsibilities and if I have to change something during the game I’ve got no hesitation doing that.”

Harris will bring back the players he rested at Rochdale, while Tim Cahill could also be in contention after scoring for the under-23s against Coventry on Monday.

Harris added: “He’s certainly left his mark with his performances in training and his professionalism because we saw the team up its performance last Saturday [against Reading]. Coincidence? I don’t think so.

“Bringing in the new players, it has given that lift in the dressing room and players who thought they were settled in the team are looking over their shoulders. We’ve got quality players to come in and replace them and I’d have no hesitation taking someone out and putting someone else in.”

It was the Australian international’s first competitive Lions goal since his winner in the 1-0 victory over Sunderland in the FA Cup semi-final in 2004.

Warnock was furious with Millwall’s approach when the sides drew 0-0 earlier in the season, pointing to one Hutchinson tackle that he felt should have resulted in a red card.

But Millwall were also aggrieved in that game when Lee Gregory was hauled down just outside the box but Cardiff escaped sanction.

Hutchinson is expecting a “feisty affair” at The Den on Friday night, when two of the sides with the lowest passing stats in the Championship go head to head.

“If that’s how he wants to come at the game, then bring it,” Hutchinson said. “That’s what we pride ourselves on. There aren’t many teams who get stuck in as much as we do.

“To be fair they’re a same sort of version, they don’t like tika-taka football. They like to get it forward quickly and are very physical in the tackle.

“It will probably be a feisty affair and one you have to roll your sleeves up and be ready for.”

Millwall are exceeding expectations this season, twelve points clear of the relegation zone and having added impressively to their squad this season.

But Cardiff are also proving people wrong, and are still in the hunt for automatic promotion.

“They’re up there and fair play to them, they’ve had a great season and will be looking to continue that Friday.

“We’ve beaten some big teams at The Den and come Friday night we’ll be looking to win. We’ve also signed some cracking players in January.

“We’re looking good at the moment.”
