POLICE HAVE issued a ‘heart-felt appeal’ for help trying to find the family of a Camberwell man who died in November.

John Stuart Parkin, 62, was believed to have been married more than once and have children, but police have been

unable to find any family. They’ve now turned to the public for help, but have had no luck with a Facebook appeal.

Mr Parkin was found dead at his flat in Venice Court, Sultan Road, Camberwell, by police on November 21 after a friend who hadn’t seen him in a while raised the alarm.

T

hree of the borough's cabinet members will be standing down at the next election in May, leaving big shoes to fill in important roles.

Councillor Mark Williams will be leaving his role as cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, Maisie Williams will be standing down from public health and social regeneration, and Fiona Colley will be giving up her role as cabinet member for finance, modernisation and performance.

Council leader Peter John has sung the praises of his 'amazing' colleagues, and his job is now to find replacements for politicians who have amassed years of experience in the borough. Fiona Colley herself has been a steady political figure within Southwark for years; she has been a cabinet member since 2010 and a councillor since 2002. She will have experienced the highs and lows of leading Southwark with Peter John since Labour came to power in the borough.

With the local elections approaching (yes, more elections), we cannot say who will be leading from May. Even if Labour retain power in the borough, Southwark residents will have to get used to some new faces at the top table.

A new play centre?

P

arents have told us they feel there is not enough in the borough for children with complex needs and disabilities.

One mum says she rides the bus for hours at the weekends with her son as there aren’t enough activities suitable for him. The council has said it has lots of services available, but these parents are calling for a specialised play centre where they wouldn’t have to explain their child’s behaviour.

These are tough times financially, but these are valid concerns. Can an inventive solution be found?

Huge 5 kilometre inflatable course to set up in park

RUNNERS WILL get more than a spring in their step in Denmark Hill this April

Thrill-seekers will be able to try their hand at what claims to be ‘the world’s

biggest inflatable five kilometre run’ in Ruskin Park.

The course consists of eleven giant inflatables which, combined, comprise enough air to inflate over 100 million footballs, organisers say.

The event was thought up by former Cbeebies presenter Alex Winters, who came up with the idea while watching an episode of ITV’s Ninja Warrior gameshow back in 2014.

“I grew up watching some of the great, classic TV shows of yesteryear like Fun House, It’s a Knockout and Gladiators. Like many others I dreamed of taking part in something like that, but

never got the chance. Now I am giving Londoners the chance to roll back the years and act like a kid again,” he said.

Runners must be at least four feet tall and will be able to participate on three different dates; April 28 in Ruskin Park, Denmark Hill; July 28 in Finsbury Park; September 28 in Crystal Palace Park.

Tickets range from £30 to £60 and are available at www.begung-ho.co.uk BBC Children in Need are offering free tickets for participants who pledge to raise at least £100 for the charity.

Motorcyclist hurt in Old Kent Road collision

CAMBERWELL

PECKHAM: The Old Kent Road was closed for more than three hours after a motorcycle was "in collision with a traffic island" on Tuesday.

The major road was closed during the morning rush hour on January 23, after a female motorcyclist, aged in her 30s, was involved in the collision at about 6am.

The woman was taken to hospital but police described her injuries as “not life-threatening”. The road was reopened by about 10am and no arrests were made.

A police spokesperson said: “Police were called at 6.06am on January 23 to reports of a road traffic collision in Old Kent Road, SE15.

“Officers and the London Ambulance Service attended and found a motorcycle in collision with a traffic island. No arrests have been made.”

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We sent an ambulance crew and a single responder in a car to the scene. We treated a woman at the scene and took her to hospital as a priority.”

Mr Parkin was found dead at his flat in Venice Court, Sultan Road, Camberwell, by police on November 21 after a friend who hadn’t seen him in a while raised the alarm.

He is said to have been well-known in the area but lived alone and kept to himself.

DC Paul Smitherman, who is leading the investigation, told the News: “His close friend said he believed he had a couple of marriages and had children in the Kent area.

“We did a Facebook-sponsored appeal last week which came to nothing.

“We attended his flat again quite recently because we thought somebody might have sent him a Christmas card, and he had lived there for quite some time, but there weren’t any.

“The council will bury him if we don’t find his family.

“This is about respect for him as a dead person really; it’s a heart-felt appeal from the Met Police and missing persons team in particular.”

DC Smitherman said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding Mr Parkin’s death and that a file will be prepared for the coroner.

It is believed he was from the south of England and police are focusing their search on London, Kent and possibly Sussex.

Officers have liaised with police in Kent but so far no members of Mr Parkin's family have been traced.

BERMONDSEY: A busy road was closed off after a motorcyclist crashed their bike and ‘ran’ from the scene.

A motorbike was in collision with a car in Ilderton Road, near the junction with Rollins Street, at about 1.45pm on Thursday, January 18.

Police, ambulance, and fire crews were at the scene after the motorcyclist made off. There were no reports of injuries. A spokesperson for the Met Police told the News: "We were called at 1.46pm to reports of a motorcycle involved in a collision with a car. "The motorcyclist has run from the scene. There are no reports of injuries.” A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said firefighters were called out to deal with "fuel on the road" at 2.02pm.

IT’S TIME to honour the best of local history, with the 2018 Southwark Blue Plaque scheme nominations now open.

The scheme honours people, places and events which have historical significance and are connected to the borough of Southwark.

Past winners include The Mayflower pub, Borough Market, Geoffrey Chaucer and Surrey Docks Farm and there are now over 50 plaques installed around the borough.

Residents have between now and the beginning of June to submit their nominations to either Southwark Heritage Association or Southwark News, lead partners in administering the fifteen-year-old scheme.

“If you want history and people to be remembered then the blue plaque

scheme is ideal,” said Veronica Alden of Southwark Heritage Association. “We need people to get out there and say which sites they want to be honoured.”

The Southwark scheme came about in 2003, after many Southwark heritage sites didn’t qualify for the English heritage plaques.

“With the English Heritage plaques, the building needs to be still standing. With the amount of regeneration in this borough then that’s not always possible,” said Veronica.

“We had more history and heritage than they can cope with!”

Eligible nominations will go out to the public poll later in the year. A nomination form can also be found on this week’s History page, on page 21.

Finance, health and regeneration bosses all opt to not stand again EXCLUSIVE

THREE MEMBERS of the council’s cabinet, including the borough’s finance boss, have chosen not to stand in the next local election, the News can reveal.

Fiona Colley, Maisie Anderson and Mark Williams will all leave Southwark’s cabinet in May after many years under their belts as councillors.

Cllr Colley is currently cabinet member for finance, modernisation and performance, Cllr Anderson is cabinet member for public health and social regeneration, and Cllr Williams is cabinet member for regeneration and new homes.

statement to the News, council leader Peter John said he was “sorry to be losing three such amazing colleagues, but massively grateful for the service they have given to our borough”.

“Maisie Anderson has placed public health and social regeneration right at the heart of what we do as a council,” he said.

Cllr Maisie Anderson was first elected in 2014. She joined the cabinet in 2016 as the cabinet member for public health, parks and leisure and since 2017 has been cabinet member for public health and social regeneration.

Cllr Mark Williams was first elected in 2011. In 2013 he became the deputy cabinet member for private rented sector housing, and then became cabinet member for regeneration, planning and transport in 2014.

Since 2015 he has served as cabinet member for regeneration and new homes.

Cllr Fiona Colley was first elected in 2002, and served as deputy leader of the Labour Group, and the chair of overview and scrutiny when Labour was in opposition

before 2010.

When Labour took control of Southwark Council in 2010, she was appointed cabinet member for regeneration and corporate strategy, then for finance, strategy and performance in 2014, and later for finance, modernisation and performance in 2015.

HOLLYWOOD ACTING royalty made a surprise visit to Peckham last year, when Morgan Freeman met a hairdresser who dedicates his life to cutting homeless people’s hair free of charge, a documentary has revealed.

Oscar-winning Freeman was in the area in April to film his new National Geographic Series The Story of Us, which focuses on what makes us human.

The second episode, which aired on Sunday night, features Joshua Coombes, a 33-year-old hairdresser.

Joshua started the campaign ‘Do Something For Nothing’ two years ago after being inspired to help homeless people in London.

He told the News: “Morgan Freeman’s production company approached me to appear in the series, which is all about what connects us as humans. Our episode is about the power of love.

“We filmed in Peckham, where I cut Stewart’s hair. Stewart used to live in a council flat in Camberwell, but after being injured and left unable to work, he developed an alcohol problem and for the last few years has been homeless.

“Morgan was lovely and genuinely interested. He introduced himself to Stewart and Stewart couldn’t believe Morgan Freeman knew his name.”

Although hoping to keep filming on the down-low, it was not long before excited passersby spotted the Shawshank Redemption actor near Rye Lane.

“We filmed near the station on Blenheim

Grove and as people started recognising him some ladies from the afro hairdressers, who weave by hand, ran out too. Pretty quickly it went bonkers!”

Joshua trained at Willie Smarts hairdressers in Clapham six years ago after spending his early 20s as a punk musician. He moved to Peckham eighteen months ago. He started cutting hair as a way to connect with the rough sleepers he regularly saw sleeping on the streets. Two years ago he began going out once a week with his razor and scissors and estimates he has now helped hundreds of people. In the last year Joshua has travelled the world meeting homeless people and sharing their stories on his Instagram page. “I just approach people as I would like to be approached.

ELEPHANT DEVELOPER Lendlease has joined forces with a Canadian pension fund to plough £1.5billion into the build-to-rent sector.

The company’s partnership with the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) will see £450million invested in the next phase of private rent homes at Lendlease’s £2.3bn Elephant Park

development.

CPPIB will invest about £350million for 80 per cent and Lendlease will invest the balance. Construction has already begun, and the first homes in this phase are expected to be completed in 2020.

Lendlease will develop, construct, and manage the build-to-rent homes on behalf of the partnership.

Dan Labbad, CEO of international operations at Lendlease, said: “In recent decades, structural shifts in the housing

Gala Festival, a two day music and food celebration, is to be held in the park over the bank holiday weekend from May 27-28.

The first day of the ticketed festival will be for adults only, while the second day will be for families of all ages.

An event company has submitted an application for a premises licence seeking to allow up to 9,999 people at the site at any one time and for the sale of alcohol.

It proposes to hold the festival from 11am to 11pm on the Sunday, 11am

to 10.30pm on the Monday, and to sell alcohol up until an hour before closing.

But the Friends of Peckham Rye Park have raised concerns over the festival being held in the park – saying they fear it could “set a precedent”.

The chair of the group, who did not wish to be named, said some members feared there would be damage to the park and disturbance to residents by the volume of visitors leaving the site, disturbance to wildlife, and lack of access to the

park for locals.

She said she also felt there had not been adequate consultation with the community.

“I think the park and the common are not big enough to host events such as this,” said the chair.

“They should be located in parks like Burgess where events can be located a distance from residential properties.

“A large area of the park will be closed off – they are quoting for eight days but we believe it will be longer than that for the land to recover.”

“Our main fear is that, if this is allowed, it could set a precedent for endless events of this type,” she added.

“So many people love this park: we just don’t want it turned into some money-making venue for Southwark Council.”

The premises licence application will be decided by a licensing subcommittee on Monday, January 29.

Although representations have been made about concerns of potential damage to the park, the committee is limited to considering matters about the licensing objectives only.

Permission to use the park has already been sought and granted.

Responding to the concerns raised, a spokesperson for Southwark Council said there would be a “phased closure” of the event which would see visitors begin to leave from 9pm to minimise the impact on

THE FATE of controversial plans to redevelop Elephant and Castle shopping centre should finally be decided on Tuesday as councillors prepare to vote for a second time.

The plans put forward by developer Delancey failed to get approval from a planning committee following a tense, seven-hour meeting last week.

Councillors voted four against and

three in favour of passing the plans, while one abstained, prompting many campaigners to celebrate – but the following morning the council said the decision did not mean the plans had been rejected.

Instead, councillors will discuss what the formal decision will be at a meeting on Tuesday, January 30, and will then vote again.

Delancey’s huge ‘town centre’ development plans for Elephant and Castle propose to demolish and

rebuild the existing shopping centre and London College of Communication campus, and bring 979 homes, an additional Northern Line entrance, and a cinema and music venue to the area.

However, they have been met with fierce opposition from traders, residents, and councillors, who are concerned over the amount of affordable housing and retail on offer, and the loss of a popular bingo hall, among other things.

Protestors demonstrated outside the council’s Tooley Street headquarters ahead of the meeting last week and managed to get inside the foyer as it began.

Days prior to the meeting, a number of Southwark Labour politicians also wrote an open letter setting out their reasons for opposing Delancey's plans in their current form.

Entrepreneur sets up own company putting homes up for prize auction Fear

HOUSE-HUNTERS could get their hands on a chic Nunhead flat – for as little as £2.

Entrepreneur Lara Buckler is selling her studio flat through prize auction for just £2 a ticket, after a slowing housing market meant it just wouldn’t budge.

The 28-year-old and her mother bought the former shop at auction in 2014 and, having been through the process successfully before, anticipated it would take just six months to convert into a flat and sell.

However, Lara says there were bumps along the way, which meant it took two years to be ready – by which time the market had changed due to factors such as Brexit and increased stamp duty rates. “Within that two years the market completely changed and it meant things that should sell weren’t selling, everyone was just too cautious and wanted to wait to see what the market was doing,” said Lara, who lives in Crystal Palace.

“We put it on the market for the £300,000 mark but it didn’t sell – people were saying the market might go down, so we reduced it but I ended up saying it didn’t matter how much we reduced it, it was just the wrong timing.

“We bought a flat at auction previously

and did the same thing, that was absolutely fine but it was a completely different market and we refurbished and sold it within a six-month turnaround.”

It was at this point Lara came up with the idea of setting up her own company – Houseagogo - with husband Chris, 32, who also has a background in property.

The idea is that the company will not only sell the Nunhead flat through prize auction, but will also help others to sell their properties.

Lara will need to sell 200,000 £2 tickets for the studio flat and, once these have been sold, the competition will close and a winner will be announced.

The lucky winner will not have to pay a stamp duty – and Lara is also offering to cover all bills for the first six months.

“What’s quite good is it helps the firsttime buyer get on to the property ladder for a very minimum cost since there’s no stamp duty and we don’t want it to become a liability for someone who’s won so for the first six months we cover all of the bills,” said Lara.

“Since we set this up it’s clear we are not alone.

“We haven’t had any negativity with it – everyone has said they hope it works because it makes sense, everyone can relate to it in some shape or form.”

THE OWNERS of a Borough butchers are to hang up their aprons for the last time after 35 years of service.

Borough’s Suffolk Meats on Great Suffolk Street first opened its doors in 1983 and will shut them for the very last time at the end of March. Bill Mullins, 67, and Brenda Mullins, 65, the owners, are due to retire after 35 years of loyal service to the area.

“We’ll be sorry to go but the time is right. We’ve stuck with our customers and they’ve been loyal to us,” Bill told the News.

“We’ll miss the banter with the customers the most. Some of them have been here as long as we have,” said Bill.

The couple first met in 1969 at the Squires Youth Club on the Rockingham Estate in Elephant and Castle, and have been married for 46 years. They say that although they have nothing planned for their retirement, they’ll be happy to finally get a good night’s sleep.

“We do fourteen hour days plus three hours of travel on market days. It’s just gotten too much as time has gone on. We can only go so far,” said Brenda. “We haven’t got anything planned for our retirement. We’ll probably be a bit lost at the beginning,” she said.

The couple have said that they’re looking forward to being able to work on their garden and do some voluntary work at local charities where they live in Bexley.

Dulwich-based Aspire Wellbeing is looking to purchase a second Motor Med, an exercise bike and hand cycle which costs £6k.

Keith Edmondson, the managing director of Aspire, which specialises in helping stroke survivors, as well as helping people with disabilities and learning disabilities, is doing his own

challenge to raise cash.

Keen motorcyclist Keith is to ride around the coast of India, starting and ending in Goa, from January 31 to February 12.

Teenager starts campaign to sponsor refugees to set up home

A NINETEEN-year-old from Peckham has kickstarted a campaign to welcome a refugee family from war-torn Syria to her neighbourhood.

Bea Forrester was inspired to set up the group Peckham Sponsors Refugees after learning about the Community Sponsorship Scheme, which matches refugees coming to the UK with communities who want to give them a warm welcome.

The scheme was formed by the charity Citizens UK and the government as a way for people to support refugees by applying to have a family settled in their area.

Community Sponsors raise funds to help cover some of the costs of settling the family and provide practical and emotional support to help them adjust to their new home.

The initiative is part the government’s pledge to help 23,000 Syrian refugees start a new life in the UK. If Peckham Sponsors Refugees’ application is successful, a Syrian family could move to the area by the end of the year.

Sponsors have to show real commitment including raising at least £9,000 and finding suitable accommodation with a lease for at

least two years.

Fifteen community sponsorships across the country have been successful so far, and a similar application by Herne Hill residents is also under way.

Bea, who is on her gap year after school said: “I, like many others, saw the massive displacement of people following the atrocities in Syria and wanted to help in any way I could.

“When I heard about the

Community Sponsorship scheme, and how it changes the lives of not only the family, but the community, I immediately started spreading ideas of what Peckham could do.

“I have been amazed by the

response and am so proud to be a part of Peckham Sponsors Refugees.”

She believes the scheme will help unite the community and that it will provide a new home for a family from Syria.

Now she is looking for people to get involved and join the organising team and help raise the funds.

“What has worked for other community sponsorship groups is having lots of people involved. The bigger the group the bigger the conversations about what we can offer,” she said.

The group held its first meeting on Monday and, according to Citizens UK, the 100-odd people attending was a record turn-out.

In particular, the group is looking for people with Arabic language skills, especially Syrian Arabic, and people who can help find suitable accommodation such as friendly landlords or estate agents.

YOUNGSTERS ARE in with the chance of lacing up their football boots with the stars this spring before watching them go head to head at Millwall stadium.

The Big Match returns to London on May 26 for the second year in a row and kids between the age of five and fifteen can take part.

Last year FIFA World Cup Winners Ricky Villa and Ossie Ardiles stopped by to spur the youngsters on. Kids will be training alongside professional football freestyler Colin Nell, and coaching sessions will be run by Global Premier Soccer who partner

with Valencia FC. The event is being held to raise money for the Brain Tumour Charity

and Action for Children.

“I lost my dad to a brain tumour back in 2010 and I set the event up in

support of the cause,” founder Neil Humphries told the News.

“Last year was a huge success; we raised nearly £60,000 so we’re back again this year,” said Neil.

The day will start with tips and tricks from professionals, followed by a

celebrity football match. There will also be bouncy castles, a football rodeo and family entertainment going on throughout the day.

“We would love it if people could help us make this year the best yet, so please get involved and come along,” said Neil.

Any child wishing to take part is urged to register as soon as possible as spaces are limited.

The event is free to register and is open to boys and girls of any ability, all that is required is a minimum sponsorship of £50.00 per child.

The Ring puts on free classes where young people can work-out with bags and pads

A HISTORIC Blackfriars boxing club is whipping young people back into shape by putting on free classes to introduce them to the sport.

The Ring Boxing Club, which sits just off Blackfriars Road, is running Punch Up to provide young people from the area with an opportunity to get to know the sport.

“In challenging urban environments, some kids may feel that joining a gang offers respect, but boxing earns it with skill, discipline and raising the bar of self-expectation,” Punch Up have said.

The initiative, which was started in January 2017, puts kids through their paces with a work-out using punch bags and boxing pads. Classes have proved popular with girls as well as with boys.

“The initiative has been very popular with girls. They are always very prepared to get stuck in,” Marc Riley, outreach manager of Punch Up, told the News.

Founded in 1910 by Dick Burge, an English lightweight champion, the club is one of the oldest in the country.

It was reopened in 2003 by

professional boxing promoter Mark ‘The Burf’ Burford.

George Campbell, leader of the First Crystal Palace Scouts, took his scouts along and tried the class out for himself. He described it as “an absolutely superb session which the Scouts loved.”

Classes last approximately two hours

and can hold up to 24 children. Kids get a demonstration of the equipment and learn the basic principles of the sport.

EX-SERVICEMEN AND women working at Guy’s and St Thomas’ had the opportunity to meet Prince William and tell him about their work last week.

The Duke of Cambridge visited Evelina London Children’s Hospital to celebrate the national rollout of a scheme to help exservicemen and women find employment in the NHS. He heard how mentoring and work experience placements organised through Step into Health had helped veterans go on to secure permanent jobs.

His Royal Highness also met with children who were patients at the hospital and their families.

Neil McKie is a former army officer who spent seven years in the Armed Forces before working as assistant service manager in the dental department at Guy’s and going on to become deputy service manager at Evelina. “Being ex-military, the Duke understands what it’s like to leave the Armed Forces,” said Neil.

“I said to him that when I left the Army,

organisations across London and the South East, the Guy’s and St Thomas’-led pilot has employed 34 former armed services personnel in the NHS, provided 120 work placements, and supported 257 members of the armed forces.

A MOTHER has set up a petition to open a specialised play centre in Southwark for children with complex needs and disabilities.

Tolu Enifeni says she decided to set up a petition because her seven-year-old autistic son Temi spends his weekends riding buses for hours during the winter as there aren’t any activities for him in Southwark.

The 36-year-old, who lives in Peckham, said most activities and facilities on offer are either for children over the age of eight, or during term time when her son is at school and not evenings, weekends or school holidays.

And she is not alone: other mothers who have children with additional needs such as autism in Southwark have shared similar stories.

They believe having a specialised play

centre with facilities tailored to meet the needs of their children would mean they wouldn’t have to explain their child’s behaviour every time they take them somewhere – and that they would also feel less isolated among parents sharing the same experience.

“If we had something like this and it’s all children with special needs, if the children are screaming or rocking it’s normal in that environment,” said Tolu, who also has a four-year-old daughter.

“The facilities should be for children aged three to fifteen because at the moment they don’t have any facilities for children under eight and most of the local offer is for during the term time, they aren’t for over the weekend and the holiday period when we struggle to engage our children.”

Susan Atikiro, 33, whose two sons have autism, added: “My son has problems with sensory issues and can’t go to places with other kids and fit in so we are very limited to the things we can do because of the times and other people not being as understanding of the condition.

“We want an environment where we are comfortable and accepted and don’t have to explain to people each time about our children’s conditions because it’s uncomfortable and so we are not isolated.”

Council’s cabinet member for communities, safety and leisure said: “Southwark Council wants all children to have access to a variety of activities and we are committed to providing an engaging range of services for children with disabilities and learning difficulties.

“Alongside our respite and Family Link services, which have received significant investment from the council, Southwark Youth Service provides Fast Forward, a project specifically for young people with special educational needs.

“This scheme delivers various activities such as arts and crafts, cooking sessions, life skills, trips and socialise with their peers. Peckham Pulse also offers weekend, instructor-led swim sessions in their hydrotherapy pool for children of all ages.

“Similarly, Peckham Rye Park adventure playground also has dedicated sessions for children from the age of five and older with special education needs.

“We have prioritised these services in the face of years of funding cuts because we know how valuable they are for many local families. I want to thank parents for their valuable feedback and we will look at how we can take this on board as we improve our services in the future.”

A BOROUGH building could be bulldozed and turned into over 1,000 student flats and a museum if plans are approved.

Student accommodation giant Greystar had previous planning permission to turn Capital House, on the corner of Weston Street and St Thomas Street, into a 31-storey student housing tower known as The Quill.

But Kohn Pedersen Fox architects has now drawn up new plans for the site, which include 1,025 “highquality ensuite student rooms” – and a permanent home for the Migration Museum.

The Migration Museum Project is currently based at The Workshop, in Lambeth. If plans are approved, it would move into the ground floor of the new building and become Britain’s first national museum dedicated to how the movement of people to and from the country over the centuries has shaped who we are as individuals and a nation.

Greystar says it will also “enhance” the area immediately around the site, open the building up to locals and

visitors, and provide off-site affordable housing.

The plans are expected to be submitted in February and, if approved, Capital House would be demolished in October.

Construction work would take place “during normal working hours” from January 2019 to August 2022, with the building and museum opening in September 2022.

Michela Hancock, senior development director for Greystar, said: “Greystar is excited to be bringing forward these innovative proposals in an important and historic part of Southwark.

“This scheme will combine studentliving with a permanent home for the Migration Museum.

“In addition, we will improve the public realm around the site and make the front of the building more accessible to the public.

“Greystar is a long-term operator focused on designing and building schemes that benefit communities well into the future.

“This is why we are proud to be working in partnership with the Migration Museum as they look to create a permanent home for their much-valued national project.”

Repair line blockage

ANYONE WHO read your report this month about the Setchell Estate tenants, many of whom were elderly and vulnerable, left without heating and hot water for a fortnight at Christmas, would have been horrified at their treatment at the hands of Southwark Repairs.

Anyone who has tried to deal with the Repairs 'service', will be able to relate tales of delays and sheer inefficiency of the call centre.

I myself , this week have spent virtually two days on the telephone and online trying to get a 'block outage' for heating and hot water reported and dealt with on behalf of a group of tenants who are mostly elderly and vulnerable .

First, waiting in the queue (during which time I am asked if I would like to start an apprenticeship with Southwark, which as I am 70 , I decided against). After 25 minutes waiting I was mysteriously disconnected, unfortunately I have had this treatment several times in the past.

Eventually , upon getting through, I then confirm all the details, only to find that the wrong information has been entered on the 'block outages' site.

After complaining online about the 'service' so far, the next stage is trying to get 'updates' for said repairs.

Answers to this request varied from 'we will get back to you' , which they never do, to the response when I rang in the evening and I quote" the nighttime staff only deal with nighttime jobs, for daytime matters you have to call during the day" That is a new one, which I did not receive to well.

All this , before we get on to the company that is responsible for the actual repairs, OCO or "One Careless Owner' as I call them.

From this company I have had various excuses, "the men are on site" is a favourite - the men are not on site I have just checked.

The previous company , who were also not a success, are starting to seem like the "Dream Team' compared to this lot..

For all of these matters , I have complained online, a joy in itself, in about two weeks I will get a response.

Sometimes I have actually received an apology when my logged calls were listened to on tape, and advice that said staff were 'retrained' etc.

Unfortunately, I have had an actual manager who was instructed to call me and apologise for his failure to deal with an emergency properly, he proceeded to insist that he had not made a mistake when refusing to treat an electrical fault for a very elderly housebound tenant as an emergency!

When I spoke to his manager about this, I asked her to listen to the tape.

I was then told that he had used a telephone which was not linked to the recording system, how very convenient.

I am certain that many of your readers have tales to tell , but the real concern is will anyone at Southwark council listen?

My only advice is when calling get names and job numbers and be patient, we do know that everyone (in the world) is 'very busy' On reflection I might try one of those apprenticeships they advertise, it could be at a call centre, surely I could not be any worse than a good number not all, of the current crop.

SOUTHWARK NEWS readers will be aware of last week’s marathon Elephant and Castle planning meeting.

We are astonished that the Labour administration is still backing such a weak proposal.

We want to see the shopping centre redeveloped. We want new investment.

What we don’t want is another lopsided development that prioritises those moving in over the existing community.

The new Elephant and Castle should meet the needs of both.

When we have a housing crisis, it is totally unacceptable that just 33 of the 979 new homes will be at council rent.

It doesn’t seem like Southwark Labour have learnt any lessons from the Heygate Estate debacle.

There is a strong, diverse community of traders at the Elephant. There have been no serious guarantees of affordable rental space for small businesses.

Local residents have repeatedly warned that the social life – especially for older residents – that revolves around activities at the Elephant, will be lost. For these reasons, we cannot support the proposal in its present form.

We are pressing for something better, a new Elephant and Castle that delivers for all our communities – and provides new homes that local people can actually afford.

Over 1,300 homeless

AS A Shelter supporter, I was devastated to discover that there are more than 1,300 homeless families in Southwark.

As a father and someone who’s passionate about the impact that a safe, stable and decent home can have, it’s upsetting to hear that so many children are living in temporary accommodation.

Unable to keep up with high housing costs and a shrinking supply of affordable homes, people’s lives are being turned upside down. In Southwark, there are now more than double the number of families living in

places such as hostels and emergency B&B’s compared to five years ago.

No one should be left without a place to call home. That’s why I’m supporting the 10th anniversary of Vertical Rush – Shelter’s tower-running challenge at London’s iconic Tower 42, on 15 March 2018.

The charity aims to raise an incredible £300,000 to help anyone facing homelessness. Despite Shelter’s hard work for over 50 years, London continues to face a housing crisis, with a family made homeless every 39 minutes in the capital.

Housing list - no hope

WE ARE constantly being told by the left wingers that immigration is a good thing for this country, even MP Neil Coyle stated in Southwark News that asylum seekers are welcome to live in his borough.

So could he tell me why my son, who is 47 and my daughter 46, and who have lived in Bermondsey all there lives are still living at home?

They have been told by the council that they have virtually no chance on being housed in the borough that they have lived in all there lives..

I wonder how many other Bermondsey born and bread family's are experiencing the same fate as my children.

ATCHING THE Government’s approach to Brexit negotiations, and the response from European Union officials, sometimes gives the impression that as a country, we are sleepwalking our way through the process.

As a 17-year-old, I feel let down by the syllabus and question how it can still be relevant, when it was created in the year I was born.

What RSE should be doing is helping us feel empowered and know our rights – not just focusing on the biological or physical elements of reproduction, which can often be unapproachable for young people. It is therefore imperative that it explores topics such as consent and healthy relationships, which will enable young people to make more informed, and hence empowered, choices.

As a member of Plan International UK’s Youth For Change project, I feel strongly that young people need to be learning about gender-based violence. If more people were aware of Female Genital Mutilation and Child, Early and Forced Marriage then the risk of them happening would be reduced.

This is a public consultation on the government website and I urge all of you to have your say, because this is our chance to get it right.

The shiny-glassed buildings in Brussels that house the EU may seem far away for the residents and businesses in Southwark, but what happens in the meeting rooms of those buildings will have a lasting impact across Southwark.

Many people feel a disconnect between the current negotiations on Article 50, which will see the UK formally leave the EU, and their own daily lives. This is not helped by the lack of transparency and updates from the Government, which is leading to uncertainty about what the future holds. Many nationals living and working in Southwark remain unclear about what their rights will be once we leave Europe. The lack of clarity around negotiations also leaves a question mark over the impact of Brexit on our local economy. Many local businesses rely on goods and services from different EU countries and access to EU labour workforce. It is appalling that, to date, the Government has failed to produce a detailed economic impact assessment.

Fortunately, at City Hall we have a Mayor willing to champion our city’s interests. Sadiq Khan recently commissioned an independent report into the possible outcomes of Brexit and what they mean for Londoners. The Prime Minister has often commented on the fact that ‘no deal is better than a bad deal for the EU’, yet this outcome could result in 87,000 fewer jobs in London by 2030. Financial and professional services, science and technology, construction and creative industries could all take a significant hit. Big and small organisations across Southwark from our universities, art centres, and independent retailers, to developers and Housing Associations working with Southwark Council to build homes for local residents - could all be impacted by a no deal Brexit.

There are calls for the UK to remain part of the Single Market and Customs Union after Brexit and I am pleased our Southwark MPs supported a recent amendment in Parliament on this issue.

It is important for any final deal to be agreed by our MPs, and it is vital that we continue to inform them about the impact their vote may have on the lives of ordinary Londoners. In Southwark, a large majority – 72.8% - voted remain.

As a democrat, I fully respect the outcome of the Brexit vote, but I now want to see a Brexit that works for all people in Southwark, regardless of how you voted in the referendum. I’d strongly urge local resident to continue a dialogue with local representative about what it is they want from this deal.

Fear and misery in Brockley

D

o you need to know about Brecht to understand his plays? It might help to know that he was writing in a time of fear and oppression, or as he called it, ‘dark times.’ writes Susan Hallissey...

This ensemble piece of vignettes, Fear and Misery of the Third Reich, which are not necessarily connected, except to remind us of the horror of dictatorship, is still sadly relevant today 80 years after it was written.

As we are welcomed (lured in) by the cast and shown to our seats so begins several snapshots of living under the Nazi regime.

The scenes that struck most were the ‘SA Man – Theo’ (Clark Alexander), revealing how a simple chalked X on the back of a suspects shoulder – (although according to Theo to

AH. IT doesn’t please me to write here that I did not enjoy something, but The War Has Not Yet Started has really left me fumbling.

Mikhail Durnenkov’s series of short vignettes surrounding the theme of conflict attempts to delve into the everyday battles of quitting smoking, affairs or with the ever present pressures of war, terrorism and racism. Attempts being key here, as rather than a scuba dive I felt we barely breached the surface of a snorkelling expedition, writes Rosie O’Connell..

I get what it is trying to do – the world is indeed a dark, scary place and conflict, -global or home-grown - affects us all, but the piece just felt like it needed some maturing. If we are going to talk about the issues the play brings up then let’s talk about them, not brush past them trivially.

Hannah Britland, Sarah Hadland and Mark Quartly skipped from one scene to the next with ease, encompassing dozens of different characters, regardless of age or gender. Their delivery of the material was smooth and all three actors’ versatility was perfectly showcased.

Of course there was potential, the last sequence was the one I found the most moving and real; a story of a woman who

As ‘The Jewish Wife’, played beautifully by Rhiannon Summers, begins packing and intermittently phoning various family and friends, we enter her world of dread. It is poignant and touching and I wondered how these relationships worked out, if at all, after the war.

It was a tough call engaging with the numerous characters. We are introduced to so many and some so briefly. In the ‘dark times’ no one could be trusted. This was clearly illustrated in the family scene where

in dealing with her abusive husband creates her own imaginary next door Prince Charming. The writing and performances here were uncomfortable, but for all the right reasons. No one should feel comfortable or complacent watching someone spit in someone else’s face and this scene made me sit up and watch. It was a powerful moment that got to the root of the problem, something that the majority of the piece seemed to avoid.

I found myself dwelling on some scenes later that evening, that were begging to be expanded upon and frustrated that they

Murdering Mozart

COMPOSER ANTONIO Salieri has just hours to live and wants to confess to murdering Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the child prodigy who grew into the musical genius.

Flashbacks take us through the whys and wherefores that led to a bitter Salieri hating his rival so. But this is Pater Shaffer’s version of two real people in his fictitious Amadeus, writes Michael Holland...

A stark set and bare lighting puts the dying Salieri in the shadows as he teases us with his ‘did I didn’t I’ tales, drawing us into his intrigue. The stage then comes alive with colour and music as we travel back to 18th century Vienna and a young Mozart creating a storm with his concertos and operas. Salieri becomes our narrator to life at the Emperor’s court, introducing us to the main players and giving us snippets of information about Mozart. By the time we actually get to meet Amadeus there is nothing but surprise when he bounds on like a pixie with a touch of Johnny Rotten and Vyvyan Basterd thrown in along with Tourette’s!

Over time we see Salieri beaten down

by Mozart’s genius, but due to his position at court he is able to hinder his rival’s progress, leaving Amadeus and his family almost destitute. He recruits his peers to keep Mozart down while all the

time pretending he is a friend to Mozart, that he is trying to further Mozart’s career, that he will find him rich students to teach. And all the time that Salieri has his own lucrative position as Court Composer he also knows that Mozart’s music makes his own work mediocre.

Ultimately he blames God for not giving him ‘one good piece of music’ to rival his rival’s.

The acting is superb. Lucian Msamati’s Salieri stalks the stage at all times, and every aspect of Mozart’s existence, in an amazing performance. Adam Gillen as Amadeus crackles and fizzes in the role.

Michael Longhurt’s direction perhaps even betters the performances. While the live on stage music provides glimpses of his genius, the set and lighting create the diminuendos and crescendos of Mozart’s life and unexplained death. There is no Magic Flute, no Marriage of Figaro or Così fan tutte for Salieri. Salieri, ultimately, is remembered only for his connection to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart,

Experiment that led the way with healthy living 'O

RGANIC, GREEN, healthy, fitness' - you know what these words mean. You probably hear them constantly, as our generation pursues the ideal of leading a healthy lifestyle.

What you may not know is that local doctors Scott Williamson and Innes Pearse probably had influence over this.

In fact, in 1926 Dr.Williamson, a Scottish pathologist, and his assistant Pearse embarked on a project known as "The Peckham Experiment", which would greatly benefit the local community, and shape the global field of medicine and healthy living.

The 'experiment' started at 142 Queen's Road and was celebrated with a blue plaque in 2008. But with contributions from private benefactors, the doctors built The Pioneer Health Centre in May 1935 in St Mary's Road, which closed during the war.

The centre was far from being a regular community centre, because of Dr Williamson's revolutionary approach to health.

He believed that prevention was better than cure and applied what is known as the 'holistic approach': he didn't impose cures or schedules, because he believed and further proved that patients' free will was more beneficial than imposing cures or guidelines to let them flourish physically and mentally.

People of all age could use the centre, which stayed open from 2 pm to 10 pm: a big glass building extended over three floors, it offered a recreational space where members could socialise and play sports, from gymnastics and swimming to dancing. The only requisite to join was to be residents within the one mile 'pram-pushing distance' and to pay the centre a minimum contribution.

At the time, Peckham consisted mainly of self-employed artisans or small businesses. Through a study, Williamson discovered that many had some sort of illness. Taking the family unit as a social basis for his study, he wanted to give them a different cure.

He encouraged members to engage freely in all the activities they desired: thus, hidden talents and predispositions surfaced, as children would organise their own plays or excel in certain sports.

A team of researchers observed and studied the families' new lifestyle in relation to their health, as Dr Williamson took regular check-ups and discussed the results with them.

As the building was made of glass, everyone was visible to each other and this improved sociability. As Mary Langman, member of staff at the Pioneer Health Centre and Williamson's personal secretary, writes in her personal account of the time - "what was exciting was the emphasis on cultivating what

was right- as distinct from proving remedies for what was wrong."

The centre's members grew close, living like a big extended family. One of them said- "the Centre became an extension of our home."

Williamson states significant and profound changes in the way his vision of 'health' had developed. In his treaty 'Science, Synthesis and Sanity', published after his death, he stated that ultimately- "Living healthy is a process, not a state or a condition."

The members of the Peckham Health Centre ate and drank organic foods, such as fresh milk and vegetables that were grown on a farm in Kent and provided by the founders of the Soil Association.

From an early age children were taught to choose yoghurt over fats and to eat brown bread. Parents were so pleased with the natural and balanced growth of their children that they asked for a school to be set up.

Pregnant women were given much care and consideration. The newborns, known as "centre babies" turned out to be generally more open and receptive than normal babies, although there is no sufficient scientific evidence to sustain the theory.

Over 1,000 families joined and the centre attracted up to 10,000 visitors a year.

As Mary Langman puts it, the final message was clear: "Health is more infectious than disease, given the right conditions for its spread."

But for various reasons, prominently a lack of funds and support from central government, the centre was forced to close in 1950. Despite many protests and petitions by distraught locals for its

EACH YEAR since 2003 local people have been voting for the people, events and places they have felt worthy of a blue plaque.

The scheme came about after the ‘News’ approached English Heritage to get more of our history recognised, only to be told that most of our buildings would not qualify as they were destroyed in the blitz and post war era.

Working in partnership with Southwark Heritage Association and Southwark Council, over 50 of our own blue plaques have been erected.

An Indian experience

aluchi is not just an Indian restaurant but an experience. As well as the inventive dishes I could also write about the passion for cooking held by Chef de Cuisine Jomon Kuriakose who visited our table, the suites that cost over a £1000 a night in the LaLit Hotel that encompasses Baluchi, and the magnificent Victorian architecture of this Grade II listed former school it is housed in, writes Michael Holland.

I could also very easily pen a 2000 word essay on the toilets! Three visits I paid to these thrones of games, where a jet of warm water was followed by a gentle blast of warm air in a splosh, wash, blow and go event that you negotiated via a panel of buttons and switches from your heated seat.

A beturbanned man in silk Indian national costume greeted us at the front door of Baluchi, which celebrates its first birthday in February. Someone else led us through to the Headmaster’s Room the place where small boys were once flogged for naughtiness - and another staff member brought us cocktail menus. Nina quickly came down on the side of an Indian Summer, a drink I found quite medicinal in taste, but which she adored, while I perused a touch longer and discovered the Srinagar Punch, a fruity cocktail with the added kick of gin, cognac and champagne!

There was an atmosphere of quiet and I wasn’t sure if it was due to the calming influence of the trance track playing lightly in the background or fear of the Headmaster charging into the room with his gown flowing and a cane in his hand. When we finished our drinks we walked through to the dining hall where the ‘exam conditions' hush continued.

Andrea made himself known to us and promised to fulfil our every wish, so we allowed this very knowledgeable Italian to take charge.

First to arrive was poppadoms and chutneys, but nothing like you see in your local Indian; the poppadoms were spicy and the relishes home made.

It was after this appetiser that Nina returned excitedly from the loos and implored me to try them. She was amazed at the warm seat, though a tad anxious about the Oscillate and Ventilate buttons! I had a glug of the Barbera d’Alba red that Andrea said would go nicely with every course he had chosen for us while letting Nina’s info settle.

Next up was the Bharwan Zucchini: Crisp courgette flower, achari

paneer, curried yoghurt and pickled garlic. Very similar to tempura but with the spicy flavours of the subcontinent. This was surprisingly much better than I thought it would be; Nina, in fact, made this dish her favourite. The other starter was Orkney Scallops with Samphire pakoda, sea buckthorn puree and gin foam. They came in a smoke-filled glass dome that was ceremoniously lifted to allow the mist to escape and the scallops to be revealed.

Andrea explained that, because of their popularity, the Tandoori Prawns had survived three menu changes since the opening. When we saw them and ate them we completely understood. I’ve never seen prawns that big - and tasting so nice. Our other main course was, I suppose,

the only dish that had links to local Indian restaurants, but, even so, the Butter Chicken was the best I can recall having. Its creaminess outshone any other, and the sauce was great for mopping up with the Potato, Ceps and Truffle Kulcha, a kind of stuffed naan. Chef Jomon came to talk us through both dishes, making me salivate just as much as the food already had.

The time had come to look at the desserts menu but I was now full and suggested to Nina that we share one.

Going by the look she gave me I might well have said her bum looked big in that! ‘I’m not sharing so you’d better choose something,’ she hissed through clenched teeth. She had chosen the Sugar Free Rasmalai and I still can’t comprehend why because it’s subheading was: ‘Unripened curd cheese dumplings in saffron milk’! When was unripened curd ever a good choice?

I tried to choose ice cream, but Nina was having none of it. ‘You do not come to a place like this and have ice cream; you can get ice cream

anywhere!’ So she ordered me the Saffron Infused Compressed Pineapple with Cardamom ice-cream and pink peppercorn tuille.

Well needless to say I found the Rasmalai ghastly and the pineapple dish far too rich for me. Nina, however, unsurprisingly loved them and was even able to finish with an espresso after polishing both off.

Baluchi is indeed an experience.

Jomon sees his work as an art form rather than merely feeding people; he wants dining with him to be about sight, smell and atmosphere as well as taste. And at Baluchi you certainly get to use all your senses in the experience.

Millwall’s offices might be inundated this week, after this absurd rollercoaster of a contest at Elland Road on Saturday.

This was Millwall’s 4,000th game in Football League history, and there can’t have been many of the previous 3,999 to rival it and produce such contrasts.

This team have given it a go in the last couple of years, though. There was the 32 win at Bury last season, Aiden O’Brien flinging his shirt to the frozen Gigg Lane ground as he ran to opposition fans to celebrate his last-minute winner that capped a comeback from two goals down.

That was topped on the last day of the season when Shaun Hutchinson headed in Shane Ferguson’s corner five minutes from time for a 4-3 win at Bristol Rovers that clinched a place in the play-offs, from where Millwall launched their successful Championship bid.

At half-time on Saturday, Lions fans must have been reflecting on a trip that looked like money well spent, their side cruising against a Leeds team that you thought the only thing awaiting them in the second half was utter humiliation.

Away supporters were revelling in it, and so was a former Whites striker.

Steve Morison played 42 times for Leeds between 2013 and 2015, and by his own admission on Saturday evening, he had been “crap” during that spell. He never endeared himself to Leeds fans, and after joining Millwall further stoked the ill-feeling when he revealed the Yorkshire

side were still paying him over the first year of his Lions contract.

Leeds fans attempted to torment their former centre-forward on Saturday. Tony Cascarino tells a story about when he first noted Teddy Sheringham’s mental strength and unbreakable faith in his own ability. Millwall had lost a game at the old Den, and as the players were walking off most of the venom was aimed at Sheringham, fans leaning in from the terraces to get as close to him as possible to vent their rage. But Sheringham didn’t even blink, staring straight ahead on his way to the dressing rooms. It was that tunnel vision that helped him break Millwall’s goal record, before Neil Harris claimed it as his own.

Morison has the same mental strength, and it was he who inflicted the torment on the hosts in the first half. Eighteen minutes in he sent over the sweetest of crosses for O’Brien who nodded in his fourth goal in three games.

Three minutes before half-time, Morison showed his strength to hold off Roland Vieira and cross brilliantly for Lee Gregory, and his strike partner couldn’t miss. With Liam Cooper already off for a red card after a late tackle on George Saville, it seemed a question of only how many.

This was the fourteenth game in which Millwall were chasing a first away win of the season, and they appeared to be about to end their winless run in the most emphatic way. Harris had managed in eighteen Championship games on the road without a win, and after all that this was set to be unexpectedly routine.

He warned his team at the break that Leeds would respond, but he can’t have imagined the extent to which his players would collapse and seem on the verge of

one of the worst defeats since he took over.

Pierre-Michel Lasogga fired home a minute into the second period, and soon Jordan Archer was fumbling a straightforward cross and after an almighty scramble Kemar Roofe wheeled away with the ball in the net.

Somehow, less than ten minutes into the second half it looked like there would be only one winner, and somehow that wasn’t Millwall. Leeds continued to pile forward and scored the goal of the game when Lasogga fired a rasping shot into the bottom corner, this time Archer given no chance.

From one former Leeds striker set to dominate the headlines, Harris called another off the bench to try to rescue the game.

Tom Elliott came through the ranks at Leeds, only played a handful of senior games, and with three minutes to go most Whites fans had probably barely registered him.

But Millwall showed the character in this team as they kept plugging away in the face of the prospect of a humiliating defeat.

Another sub, Mahlon Romeo, chipped the ball into the box, Jake Cooper intelligently headed it towards Elliott who drilled expertly into the bottom corner and celebrated by clamping his hand over his mouth.

But that wasn’t the last word in this astonishing game.

Two minutes into injury-time, Morison was involved again and then Jed Wallace was surging at a backpedalling defence.

Wallace chanced one, swinging his weaker left foot at the ball, which took a nick off a Leeds boot and, remarkably, bounced into the back of the net.

Still that wasn’t it. In the very last moments of the game, Archer went someway to redeeming himself when he kept out Conor Shaughnessy’s effort and finally Millwall fans could celebrate a Championship away win, at the home of one of their bitterest rivals, for the first time since February 2015.

We haven’t even mentioned Wallace’s disallowed goal, Dave Livermore and Leeds coach Paul Butler being sent to the stands, and Shaun Williams playing his 150th competitive game for the club.

At least this weekend against Rochdale should see tranquil progression to the FA Cup fifth round, no drama, no stress, no racing pulses.

On second thoughts, with this team, don’t bet on it.

Thompson is learning all the time from his midfield rivals and feels he is now a much better player EXCLUSIVE

RATHER THAN sitting on the bench and being frustrated at not playing, Ben Thompson has been closely analysing his rivals for a midfield position to study what he needs to do to improve his game.

It says all you need to know about his attitude, and will come as no surprise to Millwall fans who have watched him pour his heart and soul into every single performance in the last two-and-a-half seasons.

Thompson studies the positional play of George Saville, Shaun Williams and Ryan Tunnicliffe, and he also admits he needs to improve his communication on the pitch.

He certainly must have picked up a thing or two from observing Millwall’s top scorer this season, Saville. In his first start since last August, against Barnsley in the FA Cup on January 6, Thompson arrived with Saville-esque timing to fire home Millwall’s second goal on their way to a 4-1 win.

Thompson, 22, should get a chance to add to his six appearances this season by starting against Rochdale in the fourth round on Saturday.

“That’s what you’re paid to do, that’s our job,” Thompson said.

“You’ve got to be ready when your chance comes. The other three centre-mids have been outstanding whenever they’ve played. I’m learning from them, watching them playing.

“I watch them closely during games, that’s what my focus is on, how to improve myself. I need to work on my communication, talk more on the pitch. I’ve been trying to get more goals, I’ve been practising and it paid off.

“It was good to get a goal and kick off my season and hopefully I can get another one in the next game. It’s a great feeling to score and all the boys were delighted for me as you could see with the celebrations on the pitch.

“I’ve been working hard on my game since I’ve not been in the team trying to get back in there. The boys are great, the team spirit is quality and everyone gets on. Everyone is friends and the boys were just as

delighted as I was.

“Their experience of the game and their movements, where they go in certain positions, I’m watching that all the time. You keep learning the more you watch.

“I have learnt a lot and I think I’m developing more as a player training with them. If you ever need advice everyone is there for you, no one is going to turn you away. I talk to the boys and they help me out during training.

“It has been frustrating, not playing, losing match fitness. It’s a tough one but I can see that I have

three very good players ahead of me that have Championship experience.

“When they come in you’re expecting them to play, and when you look at their age and their experience they should be playing.

“But I just saw it as healthy competition and hopefully that will push me on to be a better player and I think it has so far.”

At some point Thompson will want to put all that learning into practice on a regular basis, whether at Millwall this season or, potentially, out on loan.

He admits the latter is a possibility,

and regularly speaks to Neil Harris about his game.

“Me and the manager get on well and we talk a bit,” Thompson said.

“He’s always telling me what I can do, what I can improve on. I’m taking in everything he says and waiting for him to put me in the team.

“He keeps me on my toes and keeps me working hard to improve my game. I’ve got to keep training hard and hopefully I will get my chance.

“A loan has been discussed and is an option, I can’t rule it out. We’ll

just have to wait and see. My priority is Millwall and I want to stay at Millwall, but if I need game time I will go out. We have to see what the manager decides, but I want to play in the first team here.”

The immediate priority is Rochdale, and Thompson is eager to add to his experience in the competition, having played against Premier league sides Bournemouth, Watford and Tottenham last season.

“I’m looking forward to it and if the manager picks me on the team then happy days,” Thompson said.

“The FA Cup is always great to play in and when we got as far as we did last year it was a great experience.

Hopefully we can do the same this year.

“We’ve always done well in the FA Cup, we’ve had some great runs, beaten some big teams and to carry that on would be great.

“It’s a big chance to play against top opposition, play against some big clubs and go to their places. At The Den we’ve got a chance against anyone as well. If we get a home draw then we know we’re in with a shout.”

Whatever happens on Saturday, staying in the Championship is the main objective this season, as nice as a cup run would be.

Millwall moved onto 34 points from 28 games with their dramatic 4-3 win over Leeds last weekend, and the fact that there was some anger from Harris at the way they let their opponents back into the game before they eventually pinched the points shows how much expectations have risen this season.

Thompson said: “There was frustration because we were 2-0 up against ten men and in the second half we let it slip a bit. It was a great game for the fans to watch and luckily we brought it back and got the three points.

“But at the end of the day we shouldn’t have let ourselves get into that situation where we were clutching a bit. We had to dig in.

“Steve [Morison] and the older boys and the staff weren’t happy with the dip in our performance and standards, but sometimes that happens, that’s football.

“We’re lucky we came out on top at the end because it’s a great game to win for Millwall. For the fans, for the club in general it’s a massive game. There was a great atmosphere and we did the job.

“It’s been frustrating, we’ve been playing some great football on the road, gone to some big places and played better than other teams without having the results drop for us.

“At Leeds we got the result and hopefully there will be many more to come.

“There’s no reason why not, we’ve matched every team we’ve played so far and haven’t struggled at all. I think we can easily push into that top twelve. We need to keep grinding out results and working hard.

“Survival was key at the start of the season, but we have pushed on and done better than expected.”

Ex-Hammer impressed with team that Bomber’s built

MILLWALL HAVE received high praise from a very unlikely source – former West Ham defender Alvin Martin.

Martin played for the Lions’ bitter rivals for 20 years between 1976 and 1996, but one son, Joe, played for Millwall for two seasons, before another, David, signed for the Lions last summer.

Martin has been a regular at The Den in recent seasons, most recently to watch Dave in action in the 4-1 win over Barnsley in the third round of the FA Cup earlier this month.

And goalkeeper Martin has revealed his old man is impressed with the side that Millwall boss Neil Harris has put together and the values he has instilled.

“He was down quite a lot last year and he sees the difference in the team,” Martin said. “He said, ‘they’re a proper football club and every week they are game. That’s all you can ask for from any team.’

“From the first day I walked through the door I didn’t really know what I was walking into. It was one of those situations where after the first day I thought, ‘yeah, I love it here’.

“It suits my personality, I love grafting. I love the way the manager puts his teams out – it’s a do-or-die mentality. I think there is no other way to play football. It means everything to win. I can’t stand losing and the way the manager sets his teams out it’s that kind of mentality and it suits me down to the ground.

“We know in every game that we are going to war. You know you’ve got to fight for every throw-in, every corner.

Every goal, every clean sheet, it’s tooth and nail.

“If you take your foot off the gas you’re going to come out on the wrong end of some results. Football can swing so quickly, you’ve got to keep your foot on the gas.

“The manager emphasises that with us.

Every team-talk you’ve got to be ready.

This could be your last game.”

Martin has had to be patient this season, after seven campaigns as the first-choice stopper for MK Dons.

He has played just twice this season, keeping a clean sheet against Aston Villa in December and then getting another chance against Barnsley.

“I was lucky enough to be with a club like MK and played for seven years. This year has been a challenge for me, but it’s what I wanted,” Martin explained.

“Obviously I want to play, but it’s one of those things where you are only as good as your last game.

“You go out there and need to treat it like the last game you will ever play.

“I trust the manager. As a goalkeeper,

I’ve learnt this now, whether you’re playing or not playing you’ve got to put in the same effort day-in, day-out. It is harder, it’s mentally testing in different ways.

“When you are playing it’s mentally tough to get through game after game after game because you know one mistake and you’re under pressure. You know you have to get through the next four or five games without making an error because it buys you a bit of grace.

“When you’re not playing you’re watching on and it’s a strange feeling because you want everyone to do well but you also want to be involved. It’s a tough place to be and mentally you’ve got to be strong. But I know I can deal with that and I will be ready when the manager calls on me.”

That is likely to be this weekend, when Millwall host Rochdale in the fourth round

And he compared it with another famous win, when he was on the bench for Leeds as they became the first side from the third tier to knock Manchester United out of the FA Cup, when they won 1-0 at Old Trafford in the third round in 2010.

“With goalkeepers, half a yard here or half a yard there is the difference between making a save and not. So you need to sharpen up quite quickly.

“I need to go in and be solid. Fortunately as goalkeepers you just need to react to what comes your way and hopefully I’ll be ready.”

Martin immediately claimed the number two spot after joining the club, providing competition for Jordan Archer.

That meant Tom King dropped down the pecking order, but Martin has been impressed with his team-mate, who is on loan at Stevenage, where Joe currently plays.

“I think Kingy will be a very good goalkeeper one day, he’s got all the attributes. Kev [Kevin Pressman] has worked on a lot of things with Jordan and Kingy, he’s got two very good goalkeepers there,” Martin said.

“Sometimes you need someone to trust you. Stevenage trusted him and will he use

“It’s worse sometimes when you’re not playing, you feel the emotions more,” he explained. “At the end of the day I’m a Millwall player, I want us to do well and the team to get the three points. Especially a game against Leeds, you know how much it means to everyone.

“To be 2-0 up and flying, and we should have been 4-0 up, you want to keep it tight the first ten minutes of the second half. It was a rollercoaster.

“In the end to get the winner so late was an amazing feeling, I’ve never really had it.

“There was a similar situation when I was at Leeds on loan, I was on the bench when they played Man United away at Old Trafford. It was a similar feeling, pure euphoria right at the end.

“It felt more emotional than when you are playing, because when you are playing you’re so concentrated on what you are doing.

“The club in general respondswhen they are in tight situations. When the chips are down that’s when you see the supporters say, ‘come on then, let’s have a go’. It transfers from the manager as well.

He knows the club, and he knows how his team need to set up. They know how to win games.

“Obviously it doesn’t always work out, it is a game of football after all.”

THE LEAGUE is still the priority for Millwall, but Neil Harris insisted they “100 per cent” want to reach the next round of the FA Cup against Rochdale this weekend.

Harris will make a number of changes for the fixture, with Tom Elliott set to lead the line if Lee Gregory or Steve Morison are rested.

Elliott scored on his return to first-team action off the bench last weekend against Leeds, his first appearance since Boxing Day. Harris hasn’t yet decided on his team, but with games against Derby and Reading in the Championship next week, Elliott is one of those likely to feature.

“I was really pleased for Tom,” Harris said. “He’s had a frustrating period being out injured, coming back, then injured again. He’s got five goals this season and that’s a good return for someone who hasn’t played a lot of football.

“He’s got that knack in a Millwall shirt to score goals. Him and Fergie [Shane Ferguson] were excellent when they came on, by far the best attacking output by substitutes this season coming off the bench.

“Those two coming on was almost the impact Steve Morison was having at the start of last season. That’s pleasing because I don’t think we’ve had that impact off the bench very often.

FA Cup fourth Round preview

AFTER LAST weekend’s turbulence at Leeds, Millwall will be hoping for a calmer Saturday and straightforward progress to the fifth round of the FA Cup for the second successive season.

Rochdale will have different ideas and if last season’s meetings between these two sides are anything to go by it could be a goal-filled afternoon.

The Lions lost 3-2 at home to Rochdale in 2016-17 before drawing 3-3 at Spotland after throwing away a two-goal lead.

Rochdale, though, have taken a large step backwards this season and are currently 23rd in League One, nine points off safety and destined for the fourth tier.

The only time they have avoided defeat in their last six games was in the third round of this competition when they defeated Doncaster 1-0. The mood around the club was summed up when their fixture against Southend was called off, storm clouds over Spotland and a waterlogged pitch.

They have won only twice in their last eleven games, the other their victory over Slough in December.

It all points to a Millwall win, and their odds of 8/15 seem quite generous.

Neil Harris, however, won’t let any complacency set in.

“We are under no illusions whatsoever it’s going to be a tough game,” he said.

“Rochdale took four points off us last year.

“Forget league positions, it’s an absolute waste of time looking at league tables before cup competitions.

Rochdale will come with a freedom to play and they will enjoy the challenge.

“Whatever senior team I put out will be more than competitive to play against Rochdale.”

“First, the first-half performance was top drawer. We went to Elland Road, eleven versus eleven, and completely dominated Leeds. They got booed off at half-time because they could have been 5-0 down.

“Second, after all the disappointment that we had in that 20-minute spell to have the character and desire and spirit within the camp, and ability, to score two Tom Elliot let his football do the late goals and win the game 4-3 was great talking against Leeds last Saturday by my players.

“When I’m watching the draw maybe I’m watching it from a different point of view because all I want to see is a home draw,” Morison said. “I couldn’t care less who we’re playing, as long as it is at home. I don’t want to be going to Rochdale on a Saturday afternoon, I’d much rather be at The Den. “I think at The Den we’ve got every opportunity. I think last year if we’d played Spurs at home rather than White Hart Lane I’m still adamant it would have been a completely different game.

Hopefully we can get a couple more home draws.”

Fred Onyedinma missed last weekend’s game, but was back in training this week and could start up front on Saturday alongside Tom Elliott.

Lions urgently need forward after O’Brien injury EXCLUSIVE

NEIL HARRIS doesn’t want to “dilute” the quality of the Millwall squad after the search for an attacker became more urgent with the news that Aiden O’Brien could be out until March.

O’Brien damaged ankle ligaments last weekend against Leeds, and with just six days left in the transfer window the Lions need to boost their forward options.

Millwall have held talks with Derby defender Jason Shackell (below, right) over a proposed move, but have so far been frustrated in their attempts to add a forward to the squad.

“I’ve been trying to bring a wide player in all window and it looks like we are going to be without Aiden for a period of time,” Harris said.

“Our luck this season hasn’t been great. We lost Steve Morison for a period, he got back fit and we lost Tom Elliott. Lee Gregory was suspended and then Fred Onyedinma got injured.

“It’s happened where we have continuously missed a player in an attacking position. We’ve muddled through at times and the boys have dug in and worked well.

“We’ve been trying to bring in players all window and it’s tough. I don’t think people really understand how difficult January is. It’s by far the most frustrating time, transfer-wise, since I’ve been in charge.

“There’s no more anyone at the football club can do, clubs just don’t want to let players go.

“I want to add quality to the group, I don’t want to dilute it with players that aren’t good enough for us. We’ve been extremely patient, it’s like a game of poker.

“Good players are hard to come by.”

Meanwhile, Harris still isn’t ruling out the possibility of Tim Cahill returning to the club.

Cahill, 38, is a free agent after leaving Melbourne City in December and is looking for a club to keep in the frame for a World Cup place with Australia this summer.

Millwall held informal talks with their former player two weeks ago, and Harris revealed they are still in touch.

Harris said: “I spoke to Timmy again, about various things, to be honest. There’s still a dialogue between me and Tim in terms of that but that’s as far as it is at the moment.”

Martin backs ‘keeper colleague EXCLUSIVE

DAVID MARTIN has leapt to the defence of team-mate Jordan Archer after the Lions’ stopper’s mistake almost cost his side against Leeds last weekend.

Archer dropped a routine cross in the 55th minute of the fixture before Kemar Roofe scrambled in to make it 2-2.

Millwall almost blew it as they went 3-2 behind before Tom Elliott and Jed Wallace scored in the last five minutes and Archer saved from Conor Shaughnessy as the Lions secured one of the most remarkable wins in Neil Harris’ time in charge.

Archer is set to be rested this weekend. Martin, 31, started in the last round against Barnsley, after his sole league appearance against Aston Villa in December.

Martin pointed out that Archer is still relatively inexperienced, and that Millwall still won the game.

“It’s part and parcel of being a goalkeeper and Jordan is still pretty young for a goalkeeper,” Martin said. “There’s not one ‘keeper out there from your Edersons down to your League Two stoppers who will not make a mistake for the year.

“You just hope when you do make a mistake it doesn’t cost the team. It was a great game to be involved in and thankfully whatever goals went in it didn’t cost the team. It was about getting the three points, about the greater good for the side.”
