Take part in pilot to be forewarned is to be forearmed

I

T MIGHT not be the most exciting article in this week’s edition (page 20), but the pilot scheme on planning notices we are running in conjunction with the council is a groundbreaking move.

If residents engage in the process we can open up a system that most people find difficult to understand and rarely get involved in.

The truth is that not everyone is really going to get involved unless it is about an application that affects them. In every borough there are groups of civic-minded people that regularly scrutinise planning applications. It is vital that these notices are constantly published in newspapers and on site to ensure that all notices are in the public domain.

What we are trying to achieve here is to increase the accessibility of notices, so people living in a particular area or street, or someone with an interest in an area or street, are notified about notices as they happen. To be forewarned is to be forearmed, so by not registering online you are putting yourself on the back foot should a development no matter how big or small come to your neighbourhood which you do not like. It is the job of the local paper to inform readers about what is happening in the borough and week after week we publish plenty of articles about future developments, often before an application is made. However, we are in a borough where the scale of redevelopment is colossal, that is why we and the council want to make sure that residents are notified by all means possible, including on mobile phones.

This is not an attempt to get rid of traditional forms of notifying residents, but maximising the reach, especially given the level of applications and the understandable level of disinterest in the planning process overall.

OR OVER two weeks we have tried to get some simple answers from NHS England about why six-year-old Harvey is being denied the life changing drug he needs so badly.

Because he suffers from an ultra rare degenerative disease, irreparable damage is being done to his growing body every day without this new treatment.

NHS England argues that it cannot simply make the drug available as it has to look into the feasibility and cost.

Yet it fails to come back to our reporter on these questions: What is the date that NHS England is going to announce its decision?

Why has it taken so long since the drug was approved by the European Medicines Agency last April?

Is the NHS dithering because the drug is too expensive?

A FURIOUS pensioner has vowed to be a thorn in the council’s side after she was ordered to remove the pot plants and hanging baskets from her balcony because they were a health and safety hazard.

Southwark has temporarily held up a white flag to Conant House resident, Pat Bryan, after she said she would stand by her balcony gate and defend her prized plants if officers tried to remove them as planned today.

Following an intervention from Councillor Eleanor Kerslake, the council has suspended the

enforcement action on the Kennington block while it tries to get to the root of the problem.

Retired grandmother-of-five, Pat, proudly displays her two Southwark in Bloom awards in her “beautiful” balcony garden, which the neighbours say always cheers them up.

After the tragic Lakanal fire, which killed six people in 2009, Pat and her husband Andy understood why they had to pay to have their balcony gate moved to directly in front of their door.

But when a letter came through the door last week saying they would need to remove that same gate along with all their balcony plants or the council would remove them and send the bill, Pat was blooming fuming.

“I’m not letting it go. They can take me to court. I will stand at that gate and

say ‘you are not touching anything take me to court!’,” said the Walworthborn housewife.

The green-fingered gran said it would “really upset” her to lose her beloved high-rise haven. “I love my plants and I can’t have a garden so this is all I can have,” said the 60-year-old.

Councillor Richard Livingstone, Southwark’s cabinet member for housing, said: “Given Southwark’s past history, reducing fire risk is a key council priority. However, Councillor Kerslake has raised this issue of Conant House with me and so I want to make sure that we have got the balance right in this case. As a result, enforcement has been suspended so that officers meet with the residents to talk through any concerns.”

HUNDREDS RAISED FOR HARVEY

THE MOTHER of a six-year-old boy with a degenerative disease was “gobsmacked” after his school friends raised hundreds of pounds for the charity fighting to get him access to a life-changing drug.

A non-uniform day and cake sale at Surrey Square Primary raised £700 after parents stuffed ten pound notes in the collection tin last Friday in support of pupil, Harvey Brown.

Mum Vikki Brown, of Galleywall Road, has been “overwhelmed” with well-wishers and offers of support after the story of her brave boy appeared in the News last week as she continues to

battle the NHS to get the drug her son desperately needs to live a longer, happier life.

Harvey has an ultra-rare degenerative disease called Morquio, which affects just 77 children in the UK. The inherited illness is caused by an enzyme deficiency, which means Harvey’s skeleton will not develop properly. His organs will continue to grow but his weak bones won’t and he is likely to develop heart disease and breathing difficulties while gradually losing his vision and hearing. There is no cure for Morquio, and, untreated, patients like Harvey, rarely live beyond their twenties.

The first drug which could help Harvey live a longer, happier life is not

something but I didn’t know it was that serious and that he wasn’t getting the help he needed. If I had the disease Harvey would help me,” said the tenyear-old.

Christine Lavery, Chief Executive at the Society for Mucopolysaccharide Diseases, which has been fighting for Morquio patients to have access to Vimizm for the last nine months, said “irreparable damage” is being done while children like Harvey wait for treatment.

“Children who were on the clinical trial and have been receiving Vimizim for a number of years have seen their condition stabilise, have increased mobility and are less reliant on wheelchairs and mobility aids which has enhanced their quality of life and lead to greater independence. “ Harvey did not choose to be born with Morquio, it is an ultra-rare genetic condition and without treatment life expectancy is around 25 years old. We are expecting an interim - ten-year-old Aaron Akande, reimbursement decision who organised a cake sale from NHS England on the 25th June and will continue for his school pal to do all we can to ensure that this is positive for Harvey and the other children and young adults desperate for treatment,” drugs for ultra-rare diseases.

Despite the trial for Vimizim being run in the UK, the life-changing drug is now being offered in ten different European countries while British children like Harvey sit and wait, deteriorating day by day.

So while other children his age are already seeing the benefits from receiving the drug on the extended trial, he has to wait for the NHS to agree a process on assessing

A spokesperson for NHS England said they are currently assessing the results of a public consultation into their assessment process for ultra-rare disease drugs, which ended on April 23. “ It'd be wonderful to be able to fund everything and do so instantly, but unfortunately that’s never been the reality, so instead there is an annual process where the NHS carefully identifies the highest priorities for new treatments, which is what’s now happening,” said the spokesperson.

Until the end of June Vikki, 46, says she is just “hoping for the best” and doing everything she can to support the MPS Society, in their fight to get Vimizim for children like Harvey.

Two guilty of ‘brutal and vicious’ stabbing

TWO MEN were convicted this week of the murder of 18-yearold David Maxwell, who was killed in a ‘brutal and vicious’ stabbing attack as he walked through Borough last October.

Ronnie Atuqiya, 20, of Second Avenue, Dagenham and Chudi Hengari-Ajufo, 18, of no fixed address, were found guilty at the Old Bailey on Monday.

On October 31, the two men attacked David without warning as he was walking through Pilgrimage Street in Borough with a friend.

One of the men pulled out a knife and stabbed David through the shoulder and back, fatally piercing his heart.

Passing members of the public tried to help the victim and a London Air Ambulance was called. However, David died around forty-five minutes after the attack at 3.13pm.

Investigating Officer Nathan Eason said: “This was a brutal and vicious attack in broad daylight on a teenager just walking down the street. Atuqiya and Hengari-Ajufo stalked David and his friend through the local area before striking.

“Atuqiya was carrying at least one knife - he and his associate clearly intended to cause David very serious harm that day. It remains unclear

what the motive for this attack was but I am pleased at today's convictions.”

Witnesses identified Atuqiya as the person who stabbed David, while mobile phone analysis also pinpointed both men at the scene of the crime. CCTV footage shows the two men running away from the scene at the time of the incident.

Premier League football Jordan Ibe paid tribute to David after his death.

A Tweet he sent to his 224,000 followers said: “Can’t believe this, RIP David. Was always cool whenever I saw you around …You’re in God’s hand lil man.”

The Bermondsey-born star added: “It’s just a person I know in the area – the local park that I used to go to and play football. They lived quite close to mine and I would always see him riding his bike, he was a cool guy – it’s bad, I mean, passing away.”

The two men will be sentenced on July 3.

Landmark Supreme Court ruling on homeless case

A PECKHAM man has been jailed after pocketing over £30,000 he collected for a charity for wounded soldiers charity.

James Addis of Stanbury Road admitted to police that he had gone out four times a week shaking a Help for Heroes bucket at different London Underground and mainline stations across the capital.

He raised an impressive £39,892.62 for the charity, which helps to rehabilitate injured service personnel, but paid most of it directly into his own personal bank account.

Between July 2013 to May 2014 he donated just over £1,500 of the total

raised to the good cause and kept the remaining £38,300 for himself.

Addis was arrested by the British Transport Police (BTP) after an off duty officer walking through Paddington station in May last year spotted him collecting for Help for Heroes in a bucket with no charity number on it.

The police investigation revealed that Addis had been a registered Help for Heroes collector in 2010 and had handed over more than £18,000 between July 2011 and May 2012 before his donations started to dwindle.

Addis, 42, was found guilty of fraud and sentenced to eight months in prison at Blackfriars Crown Court on Monday.

Thousands sign petition in Save Woods campaign NUNHEAD

THE SAVE Southwark Woods campaign put down more roots at the Nunhead Cemetery Open Day at the weekend, pushing the total number of signatures on their petition to 7,000.

The grass roots campaign is opposing Southwark Council’s plans to redevelop areas of woodland and green spaces within the borough’s cemeteries to use as additional graveyards.

The group is aiming to gather ten

thousand supporters before they submit their petition to a council meeting on July 8.

Cllr Darren Merrill, cabinet member for Environment and Public Realm, told the News previously that the council needs to create thousands of new grave spaces so burial can remain an option for Southwark residents.

On Bank Holiday Monday there is a Save the Cemetrees event in Camberwell Old Cemetery from 11am till 1pm.

A LANDMARK Supreme Court ruling will force councils to do more to help vulnerable people facing homelessness after a Southwark Council decision was appealed.

Inspector Dan Tanner of the British Transport Police said: “The sentence handed down by the judge shows that British Transport Police do not tolerate any type of fraud, no matter the amount, no matter who is responsible.

This man took advantage of his position to steal donations from the travelling public. I hope the sentence will deter anyone who tries to commit fraud, and serve as a warning that BTP will do everything in its power to identify and prosecute those responsible.”

Ruling on the cases of three homeless men last week, the court found that one, Patrick Kanu, was wrongfully denied care by Southwark.

Mr Kanu was refused housing in 2012 despite having hepatitis B and hypertension as well as psychotic symptoms and a preoccupation with suicide. The council argued then that his conditions could be controlled by medication and his wife and grown-up son could look after him, meaning he was not a ‘priority’.

Before the ruling last week, councils assessed potentially vulnerable housing applicants by comparing them with a so-called "ordinary homeless person".

This meant single homeless people suffering from mental and physical health problems were not deemed especially vulnerable because an "ordinary homeless person" might be expected to suffer from those problems.

The Supreme Court ruling has lowered the bar for vulnerable people to be given priority status on the council’s housing waiting list as their needs will now be assessed against those of an “ordinary person” with a roof over their heads.

Mr Kanu’s lawyer, Mr Stuart Hearne of Cambridge House Law Centre, said of the ruling: “This is a very welcome judgement.

I would hope that it will also be welcomed by Local Authorities. It will

make it much clearer who should be assisted.

“It is not in anyone’s interest, including that of Local Authorities, that people who have disabilities or mental health issues should not be housed or left street homeless,” he added.

Councillor Richard Livingstone, Southwark’s cabinet member for housing, said: “The Supreme Court hearing is an important test case that will have an impact on how councils across the country approach homelessness.

‘OUR QUIET STREET HAS TURNED INTO A TRAFFIC RAT RUN’

WORRIED DULWICH residents whose quiet street has been turned into a ‘rat run’ by speeding cars have urged the council to take action before someone is hurt.

Over 100 people living in Melbourne Grove have signed a petition calling for action, with the number of drivers using their road as a speedy short-cut to Lordship Lane growing every year.

Traffic statistics analysed by Southwark Living Streets, a charity championing pedestrian rights, revealed that over half of all cars using the road are breaking the 20mph speed limit, with 3.1% even driving above 30mph.

Kim Pockock, a resident of the road for 20 years, said: “There are a lot of young kids and elderly people around here but the cars don’t slow down for anyone. It’s so dangerous.

“I have an autistic son and all it would take is one misstep while I am helping him into the car for him to be badly hurt. We need to squeeze against the door when cars go by or else you’d lose the skin off your back.” Residents argue that a number of easy measures could be

£4.2m anti-flood scheme starts

DULWICH: Hundreds of Dulwich and Herne Hill residents will be protected from a repeat of the sort of ‘devastating’ floods that hit the area in 1984, 2004 and 2007.

A £4.2m scheme was launched last week in Dulwich Park, Belair Park and the Dulwich Sports Grounds, using innovative techniques to create a ‘Sustainable Drainage System’.

Lakes were expanded in the parks and earth walls constructed to contain flood water. As well as this, meadows and wetlands were introduced to attract wildlife.

Councillor Darren Merrill, Southwark cabinet member for environment said: “The new flood alleviation scheme brings reassurance to the hundreds of residents and business owners in Dulwich and Herne Hill who were previously at risk of surface and sewer flooding.”

The scheme was run in partnership with the Environmental Agency and Thames Water, whose CEO Martin Baggs said: “People who have faced the devastating effects of flooding don't mind who provides a solution, they just want us all to work together to sort out the problem and I’m really pleased we’ve done that for people in Dulwich and Herne Hill.” The area suffered particularly badly from flooding in 2004, when cars were submerged and private and business properties were damaged.

A child hit by a car at 30mph or even 25mph is in a lot more danger than one hit at 20mph.” Cllr Barber said: “The benefits of less speeding traffic goes beyond road safety – there are actually studies that show that the safer a road’s traffic is, the better residents on opposite sides of the street get to know each other.”

Cllr Darren Merrill, cabinet member for environment and public realm, said: “I'm aware that the residents don't think the traffic calming goes far enough, but as we are recording average speeds of around 20 mph this wouldn't be a road that meets our criteria for priority investment to upgrade the cushions that are already there. But I would advise residents to apply for the next round of Cleaner, Greener, Safer funding which would help fund smaller scale schemes in the area.”

Breastfeeding cafe celebrates birthday with tea - and milk

A BREASTFEEDING café celebrated its tenth birthday this week with a tea party.

On Thursday the safe haven in Peckham Library had been providing a private pop-

up space for mums and babies to both have a drink for a decade.

Health visitors and community midwives from Guy’s and St Thomas’ are also on hand to offer new mothers breastfeeding advice at all the five breastfeeding cafes across the borough.

Camberwell, took her two tongue-tied children to the pop-up café and said: “Without the support of this café I would not have managed to breastfeed either of my children.”

Clarissa Georgestone, Guy’s and St Thomas’ breastfeeding coordinator, who helped launch the cafes said: “I am really

proud to have been involved in this from the beginning and delighted to be celebrating ten years of success today.

“For some people breastfeeding can be difficult so we wanted to create a welcoming space where there is no shame in not getting it right first time – many mums don’t and we want to help.”

Five injured

PECKHAM : A man was taken to hospital and four others were injured after an assault on Sunday night.

Police closed off Asylum Road near Old Kent Road to investigate after they were called to reports of an injured man just after 10.30pm.

On arrival officers found a 21-yearold man with serious injuries to his head and arms and four other men with less serious injuries.

He was taken by London Ambulance Service to a south London hospital where he was detained in a stable condition. Detectives from Southwark CID are investigating but no arrests have been made at this stage.

THE BRAVE mother of an innocent man stabbed to death in a botched revenge attack has spoken of watching his last painful moments as he gasped for breath.

Launching her self-funded anti-knife campaign ‘Cut it out’, Jean Foster has had to face the awful truth of her son Chris’s murder so she can get her message out there to young people still carrying knives on Southwark streets.

Chris Foster was enjoying a drink with his best mate outside St Christopher’s Inn in Borough High Street on November 29, 2013, when a gang of seven men approached in single file, their faces hidden by hoods and scarves.

Out for revenge on another man, who had allegedly attacked one of them a few months earlier, Aytach Lisani, 33, of Sir Francis Way, Brentwood, mistakenly stabbed Chris, 34, leaving his then four-year-old daughter Christina without a daddy.

The emergency services were called at 11.45pm but while they were on their way, CCTV footage inside the pub captured Chris’s last moments when he can be seen fighting for his life.

In order for permission to be given for the distressing scenes to be aired as part of a BBC documentary next month, Jean had to watch the video herself first.

“You could see poor Chris was in agony,” she said. “A lot of people are under the impression that it was a quick death and he didn’t suffer, but he did.

“You can see it in his eyes, they’re as big as saucers and he can’t breathe,” she added.

The London Ambulance Service treated Chris at the scene before taking him to the Royal London Hospital where he died just after 1am.

With those painful images in her mind, Jean remains determined to share the truth of what happened to her beloved

“It’s harrowing but that’s what happened to him,” said Jean, who has recorded a spoken word video about her experience to be shared with as many schools and youth groups as possible.

“My main aim is to try and make people know that the knife is not the answer,” she said. “All that bravado about carrying knives doesn’t make you any more of a man. Think of the consequences after you’ve used it,” she added.

The MET police have already asked Jean if they can use her video in talks with young people and it has been circulated to youth leaders in Southwark.

There are two men suspected of being involved on the night of Chris’s murder who have yet to be brought to justice.

Jean is hoping they too will see her video and think again.

“I hope it will also get to them and make them think,” said Jean. “They’ve taken so much from us. At present they’re free but do they want to be looking over their shoulder for the rest of their lives. They’re better off coming forward.”

In addition to Aytach Lisani being sent down for 23 years for Chris’s murder, three men were found guilty of conspiracy to cause grievous bodily harm to their intended victim and two men were acquitted of the same charge.

A SKYDIVE has raised £1,500 towards a charity for mums with cancer.

Gary Valentine Fuller (pictured far left) set up the MumMum Foundation after his nan died a year and a half ago from cancer.

Since then the 24-year-old has spent that time raising money to help other mums enjoy the

time they have with their loved ones and is now focused on raising £5,000 to get his charity officially registered.

The skydive on May 9 has brought him up to £3,000 and he is optimistic that being one of the new Mayor of Southwark’s chosen charities will get him up to his target this year (see article on page 12).

ELEVEN-YEAR-OLDS across the borough will receive a cool £10 as part of a Southwark Council scheme encouraging young people to open savings accounts.

The £60,000 scheme is believed to be the first in the country, with councillors hoping it will help participating children avoid the ‘severe financial problems’ suffered by some of the residents in the borough.

All eleven-year-olds in the borough will be given the chance to set up their own bank account with the London Mutual Credit Union. Those who take up the opportunity will get £10 to start off their savings.

Cllr Fiona Colley, Southwark Cabinet Member for Finance, Strategy and Performance, said: “For many of us, opening a bank account was a rite of passage, but there are still a surprising number of people who don’t have a bank account, and who therefore are limited in their options for saving and borrowing. This great initiative will encourage young people to think about their finances, to plan for the future, and hopefully avoid the lure of payday lenders as they get older.”

She added that 5% of UK residents do not have a bank account and often fail to save properly, which leads to a reliance on ‘extortionate’ payday loan companies. Cllr Stephanie Cryan, Cabinet Member for Adult Care and Financial Inclusion, said: “We wanted to do something more long-term to help nip some of these problems in the bud and help our residents take control of their finances.”

SIXTY ‘WONDERFUL’ volunteers, community champions and organisations were honoured at the largest ever Southwark Civic Awards last weekend.

The event, held at Southwark Cathedral, also saw the Mayormaking ceremony for the new Mayor of Southwark, Cllr Dora Dixon-Fyle.

The special Mayor of Southwark's Discretionary Award was awarded to the United St Saviour’s Charity, which provides sheltered housing provision for Southwark pensioners on low incomes.

The Honorary Liberty of the Old Metropolitan Borough of Bermondsey was awarded to Kagyu Samye Dzong London, a Tibetan Buddhist centre that provides peace and tranquillity.

Gary Cornforth received the Honorary Liberty of the Old Metropolitan Borough of Camberwell for his tireless work over the last 12 years running the Lambeth and Southwark Primary School Football League.

Sarah Wheeler received the Honorary Liberty of the Old Metropolitan Borough of Southwark for her mental health work, including the 2012 founding of the Dragon Cafe, which provides free meals and well-being workshops.

The Reverend Fred Osei Annin, known as Pastor Fred, received a Letter of Commendation for his voluntary organisation which works to combat stigma and prejudice in the church against HIV. The new Mayor of Southwark said: “It was fantastic to see so

SIMON HUGHES celebrated his birthday last weekend at a special service held in his honour at St James’s Church, Bermondsey.

The service of thanksgiving for Mr Hughes’ contribution as MP was held on Sunday May 17, and was attended by members of St James’s and St Anne’s church. Messages were read out from the Bishop of Southwark and the Dean of Southwark Cathedral.

At the end of the service, the congregation gave Mr Hughes a standing ovation and sang ‘Happy Birthday’. They also presented him with a birthday cake.

“Labour councillors never tire of telling us about the scale of cuts the council is facing, yet they seem able to find the money for themselves.

What kind of message does this send out to staff who are facing some very tough times and an uncertain future?”

Council Leader Peter John responded: “At a time when cuts to local government mean we have to rethink everything we do, it’s essential we have the best people at the helm to lead and support officers.

“I should add that since I became Leader of the Council I have reduced the councillor allowance budget, as value for money is at the heart of what I want to deliver for Southwark.”

The re-shuffle also saw Cllr Stephanie Cryan promoted to the cabinet, replacing outgoing member Cllr Dora Dixon-Fyle who has become the new Mayor of Southwark.

The former Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP said: “It was a real privilege to be surrounded by family, friends, colleagues and many others who have made the last 32 years possible, especially as it was on my birthday. New MPs dismiss fears over combined roles

NEW MPS Neil Coyle and Helen Hayes have strenuously denied claims that they are shortchanging their constituents by combining their new parliamentary duties with their council roles.

Their decision to take on dualpositions, which although not unheard of is uncommon, has been slammed by Councillor Anood Al-Samerai, leader of Southwark Lib Dems.

She told the News: “I am very worried that the new MPs seem to think it is possible to continue as councillors and doing what they are told by the Labour Leader of the Council.”

She expressed concern that the MPs’ party loyalty, as well as remaining under the control of council boss Peter John, would blunt their effectiveness as MPs – particularly when it comes to building affordable housing in the north of the borough.

She said: “Will the newly elected MP for the area oppose his council leader and demand the required number of affordable homes in every new

AFTER OVER fifteen years on the London Assembly, Val Shawcross has announced that she will not be seeking election next year.

She said: “Throughout my time as an Assembly Member I have always been clear that I would have a life after politics.

works bills, and challenged officers on planning and transport issues at various times.”

Mr Coyle added that the refusal of Southwark Lib Dems to accept the will of the people ‘seems neither liberal nor democratic,’ and re-asserted his claim that he would he would continue to act as a ‘critical friend’ to the council.

Cllr John agreed and rejected the portrayal of Mr Hughes as someone who promoted affordable housing in Bermondsey and Old Southwark.

He said: “Cllr Al-Samerai seems to

think Simon Hughes campaigned for affordable housing, but in reality he backed development with next to no affordable housing which the council opposed. This Labour council delivered a record number of new affordable homes last year and over 70% of these were in the north of the borough.”

Both MPs will not be accepting their council allowance this year. It will instead be kept within the council’s budget to provide services for local people.

The former MP for Dulwich and West Norwood said: “My ambition – our ambition – is to make London greater still.

To build One London, where every Londoner has the opportunity and security to succeed, where Londoners have a quality of life to rival anywhere in the world, where no Londoner is left behind.

“One London is a London where everyone shares in our city’s success – young and old; low and middle income as well as the better off; where we are intolerant of poverty, of injustice, of hopelessness.”

Police release ‘most wanted’ photos Men sought in connection with number of alleged incidents

SOUTHWARK POLICE have released images of the borough’s ‘most wanted’ men, who are sought in connection with a number of alleged offences ranging from serious assault to possession of indecent images of children.

Lewis Nathan Zotiades, 22, failed to appear at Woolwich Crown Court on October 9 for alleged possession of drugs with intent to supply, and a bench warrant was issued for his arrest.

The Waterloo man is white with black hair and is approximately 5 foot 6 inches tall.

Drew Adiison Bradfield, 18, is wanted in connection with a serious assault in Melford Road, Dulwich on February 12, where a male was stabbed in the leg with a knife. He is from Thornton Heath in Croydon.

Rana Tariq Mehmood, 31, is

wanted for failing to appear at Woolwich Crown Court on August 14 2012 for an alleged sexual assault, and a bench warrant was issued for his arrest.

He is from New Cross Gate.

Dario Giuseppe Musso, 28, is wanted on a bench warrant after he failed to appear at Woolwich Crown Court on 13 November 2014 for an alleged racially aggravated assault. He is from Borough. Jonathan Paul Currie, 50, of Slough, is wanted on a bench warrant after he failed to appeal at Woolwich Crown Court for sentencing on Monday, 23 March for an indecent assault.

Majid Abdalla, 19, of Elephant and Caste, is wanted on a bench warrant after he failed to appear at Woolwich Crown Court for sentencing on 31 October 2014 for possession of disturbing indecent images of children.

Santiago Barrazueta, 33, failed to appear at Woolwich Crown Court on Thursday, 8 January for

Dario Giuseppe Musso alleged possession of drugs with intent to supply, and a bench warrant was issued for his arrest.

He is from East Dulwich.

Council probes 44 missing social homes BERMONDSEY

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL is looking into more than 40 missing social housing units promised for a Bermondsey development, which never materialised.

In 2010 Notting Hill Housing’s planning application for the Bermondsey Spa development in Grange Walk pledged 44 homes at social rents (council rent levels) out of a total of 205 new flats.

But when the legal agreement came to be signed in 2011, the wording read as ‘Affordable Housing Units’, which under new regulations encompasses different tenures up to 80 percent of market rents.

In an email to Liberal Democrat councillor for Grange ward, Ben Johnson in March of this year, a Notting Hill Housing representative confirmed that at Bermondsey Spa “We don’t have any social rented properties here.”

Southwark Council and Notting Hill Housing are now looking into how the confusion occurred.

The Aylesbury Objectors raised this case in their submission to the planning inquiry into the compulsory purchase of properties on the Walworth estate.

As Notting Hill Housing has been chosen as the developer for building thousands of new homes in the regeneration of the Aylesbury, the objectors are concerned the mix-up on Bermondsey Spa could be repeated.

Councillor Mark Williams, Southwark’s cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, told the news he is “looking into the rent levels proposed at Bermondsey Spa” and that “appropriate action” will be taken as necessary.

“We are doing all we can to tackle the housing crisis and deliver as

many affordable homes for our residents as possible. On the Aylesbury Estate all of the affordable rented homes will be at social rent levels. This is what local residents want, and this is what we have secured in both the contract and the planning agreement with Notting Hill. We are looking into the rent levels proposed at Bermondsey Spa and will take appropriate action as necessary,” he said.

When the News asked what ‘appropriate action’ could be taken, we were told: “Appropriate action will be whatever we deem appropriate depending on the outcome,” and that no further comment would be made on the issue.

Liberal Democrat Councillor Adele Morris, who is a member of the planning committee said she was “quite disturbed” by the Bermondsey Spa revelations.

“The crucial issue is that the planning committee believed they were agreeing to social rents… We are given information by officers who make a recommendation and we have to have faith in what we are being told,” she said. Although she was not a member of the planning committee when that application was approved, Ms Morris says the need for “absolute clarity” around social and affordable housing is needed now more than ever.

“We’ve got a lot of big developments happening and we need to get it right for everyone. The stuff we are approving now is going to be with us for a long time,” she said.

Notting Hill Housing, which has built 1,442 homes in Southwark with another 5,489 in the pipeline, confirmed it is discussing Bermondsey Spa with the council and “looking at options.”

The Aylesbury planning inquiry has been adjourned while the Aylesbury Objectors secure new legal representation.

MAMMA MIA! An Abba tribute group will put on a toe-tapping show in the Blue Market at the end of the month.

Abba Gold Europe will be performing all of the Swedish group’s classic hits on Saturday May 30, so don’t ‘take a chance’ by missing out on some great entertainment.

Never mind ‘Money, Money, Money’, because the show will be absolutely free.

The audience are encouraged to wear their best 70s styles for the lunchtime sing-a-long. This is just the latest entertainment planned as part of the Blue Bermondsey BID, with Mick Donavon hoping the events will help breathe new life into the area.

He said: “We want to create a vibrant atmosphere, to get people thinking ‘Oh there’s something going on down the Blue again, let’s go down’. We’ve got a lot of things planned for the future, from an ugly dog competition to a folk festival.

“There are some fantastic traders, shops and cafes around the Blue and events like this will help people appreciate them and enjoy them. We want people to have a great time down the Blue and we can’t wait for the show.”

The fun starts at 12pm and ends at 2pm.

Businessman to launch autobiography - from Elephant and Castle kid to friend of the PM

A BOOK being launched at a lavish ceremony in Leicester Square next week will tell the story of Charlie Mullins: a selfmade millionaire who escaped an impoverished childhood in Elephant and Castle to become the founder of Pimlico Plumbing.

The book – called Bog-Standard Business – will detail every aspect of Charlie’s incredible rise, from his ‘tough upbringing’ boxing in Southwark to becoming friends with David Cameron, George Osbourne and Boris Johnson and receiving an OBE. The autobiography will be launched at a special event at the Leicester Square Hippodrome on May 25.

Tickets (and champagne for all

attendees) will be free, and Charlie will be conducting a live ‘Parkinsonstyle’ interview on the night, which will be filmed for American television channel NBC. He said: “It’s taken me a decade to get off my arse and finally write this book, and I'm not going to pull any punches at the launch party on Monday evening - that's why we're having it at the Hippodrome.

investigations have begun to find an underground river running beneath Greendale Fields, behind Dulwich Hamlet FC’s Champion Hill ground.

Southwark Council discovered the subterranean watercourse as part of a public consultation it carried out last year on plans to transform the area of metropolitan open land into a new public park.

Officers are currently trying to pinpoint the exact location of the stream so that it could be exposed and incorporated into the plans for the site.

The investigations involve the use of a radar and digging trial holes in various locations on the site.

Fashion show to help youngsters escape gang life

A FASHION show put on by young people affected by gang life will take place in Bermondsey this evening.

The show has been organised by Reformed, a group helping sixteento-25-year-olds escape gang life and get their life back on track.

Co-founder Julian Wright said: “What we try to do is encourage young people to get involved with projects and activities that take them away from gang life, whether they are members of gangs, ex-members or have been impacted by gang life.

“I was in a gang and spent time in prison. When my little kid started

wondering where I was, I knew it was time to sort myself out. When I got out I spent a lot of time volunteering and left that life behind.

That’s what we’re trying to do with other young people.”

The group helps members find employment, apprenticeships or volunteering opportunities. It can also help young people affected by gangs move out of the area, which can often give them the freedom they need to escape the ‘downward spiral’ of gang life and criminal activity.

The show will highlight the group’s work designing t-shirts. It will take place at 5.30pm this evening, at The Gallery, Tower Bridge Business Complex, Clement’s Road, SE16 4DG.

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL with help from the News is set to revolutionise the way people find out and respond to planning applications, not only across the borough but potentially across the whole of England and Wales.

In Southwark, despite having major regeneration projects and constant building work taking place, the percentage of people getting involved is dismal. But the figures are no better elsewhere in the country. Planning is a major issue for most boroughs but engaging ordinary residents in the process can be difficult at the best of times.

Unless an application effects you, your house price or your standard of living, getting involved in what is a rather mundane process is not top of your must do list. For centuries planning applications have been listed in local newspapers like Southwark News and this is something that local people, ministers and the press industry have fought to preserve to ensure transparency. However, everyone, including the local authority, wants to increase accessibility so people can have a say on what is being built in the borough.

According to Cllr Mark Williams, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and new homes: “This is a chance for local people to get information more quickly about plans for their area.”

A pilot scheme run in conjunction with the News has been agreed by the Department of Local Government and Communities, which will involve a digital offering on top of the press notices, site notices and letters that are sent out to residents.

An IDOX system has been introduced that allows people to get instant access about current and previous planning applications online. However, our pilot wants to go further and allow people to register an interest in an area, road or postcode and receive notifications when applications are made via email and later on their mobile phones.

A pilot scheme with the News could see mobile alerts on all planning applications mobiles follows current statistics showing that approximately 80 per cent of people in the country are now accessing the internet via their phones.

An app was considered but early research showed that people tend to use a limited amount of apps on their phones for games, travel or even dating, and that it was unlikely planning applications would fit into that category. Getting notifications about plannings applications that affect you would more likely provoke a response.

“We need to keep up with how people want to receive information, and many people now run their lives from their mobile phones,” Cllr Williams explained.

Despite the major regeneration projects and glamour developments like The Shard it is often the small building works that attract the most objections.

Parents in Dulwich were up in arms recently with some saying they were prepared to move if an 82ft phone mast was given planning permission to be erected next door to a school and a nursery.

Nearly 300 people made objections to the “colossal” Vodafone 4G aerial proposed to go at the junction of Half Moon Lane and Village Way in Dulwich, a designated ‘safe route’ for hundreds of children to make their way to the surrounding schools every day. The proposed site for the mast, which would be taller than five double-decker buses, was next door to the Judith Kerr free school, overlooking the green space where the children currently play. Local authorities are prevented from considering health concerns when deciding on phone mast applications, but the Vodafone application was nevertheless refused in March because it was out of scale with the surrounding buildings and made the pavement too

A FORMER rubbish dump is set to scrub up nicely as eleven new blocks of 270 flats and ground floor shop units.

Notting Hill Housing bought Manor Place Depot in Walworth in November 2013 and has now submitted a planning application to Southwark Council to transform it into new homes while retaining some historical treasures on the site.

The Grade II listed old Pool House and Wash Houses, currently used as a Tibetan Buddhist Centre, will be refurbished and the former Coroner’s Court will be retained at the front but demolished at the rear.

Out of the 270 new homes proposed, 257 will be provided within new buildings ranging from two to seven storeys high, divided into eleven separate blocks. There will be 44 affordable rented units, 60 available for shared ownership and 166 at market rent.

The average increase in responding to planning applications is up eight per cent since the pilot started, with advertising in the News and landing pages on both the council’s and Southwark News site. The biggest survey on planning is set to take place in Southwark with 8,000 people who have responded to applications expected to be asked how they want to be consulted.

The weekly planning applications in the News will also feature QR codes (as they currently do on site notices - see pages 3839) to encourage people to be able to get instant access on their mobiles to the full application.

“We’re hoping that by making it easier for people to find out about planning applications, we’ll make the whole subject more appealing to people. Planning doesn’t always excite people but planning decisions can have a huge impact on people’s lives. Information is power and we hope local people will engage more with the planning process if they can find information quickly and easily, tailored to their neighbourhood.

“We’re working across all our services to make them more accessible, and this is a great example of our commitment to modernise. I would urge all residents to register and join the discussion about shaping the places we live and work,” Cllr Williams said.

Life doesn’t end when dementia begins DEMENTIA AFFECTS over 850,000 people in the UK and that number is steadily increasing. Around 23 million of the UK population has a close friend or family member with dementia.

GPs in Southwark are asking residents to help increase dementia awareness by spreading the word that life doesn’t end when dementia begins.

The message is one being delivered nationwide during dementia awareness week, an initiative organised by the Alzheimer’s Society. This year people are being encouraged to ‘do something new’ to highlight that having dementia doesn’t mean you have to stop doing the things you love.

Dr Nancy Kuchemann, local GP and clinical lead for mental health at NHS Southwark Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “There is currently no cure for dementia and it can happen to anyone. However, it is important to recognise that having dementia doesn’t mean that you have to stop trying out new things.

“While dementia can make it harder to do certain things, many people with dementia have active,

healthy lives and continue their hobbies even as the condition progresses.

“With the right knowledge and support it is possible for someone with dementia to get the very best out of life.”

Dementia awareness week runs until 23 May and the Alzheimer’s Society has put together a few ideas of different things people can try to do something new: • Try out a new recipe – be ambitious and try something different to your usual cooking style • Sign up for a language class - many places offer classes to help you learn a range of languages, or you can often find free online courses • Find a new sport or exercise to try out for the first time - look for a class you haven't done at the gym before, or get your friends out to play a group game in the park • Make plans for that big trip you've always wanted to go on - you might not be quite ready to go yet, but choose a date and get things moving • Get a new hairstyle (or colour) - many salons offer free or cut price cuts to help with training

• Visit somewhere you've never been before – either close to home or further afield Southwark residents are encouraged to share what they’re doing on social media using the hashtags #DoSomethingNew and #DAW2015.

The word dementia describes a set of symptoms that may include memory loss and difficulties with thinking, problem-solving or

language.

Dementia is caused when the brain is damaged by certain conditions, such as Alzheimer's disease or a series of strokes.

Dementia is progressive, which means the symptoms will gradually get worse. However, diagnosis rates in Southwark are improving, with over two thirds of local people thought to have dementia now known to local

NHS services. This means they can get the care and support they need to continue living their lives as normally as possible.

BRING MINDFULNESS INTO YOUR DAY ONE IN four people in the UK will experience a mental health problem in their lifetime.

Southwark GPs are raising awareness of mental health and promoting mental wellbeing to help fight stigma and discrimination.

Dr Jonty Heaversedge, local GP and Chair of NHS Southwark Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), said: “Mental health problems can include low mood and depression, stress, anxiety, anger and panic attacks,” he said.

“Most people who feel low will start to feel better after a few days or weeks, but if these feelings persist or get in the way of everyday life then it's time to seek help.

“If you've been feeling depressed

for more than a few weeks or your anxiety is affecting your daily life, make an appointment to speak to your GP.” Another option is to try practicing mindfulness. This is a process that uses meditation and breathing techniques to focus on the present moment and putting aside thoughts about things that are out of your control, such as past events or worrying about the future.

It’s a mind and body based training that can help you change the way you think, feel and act.

Through being more aware of the way you think and feel about your experiences, whether good or bad, mindfulness can help you to change the way you manage and react to stressful situations, giving you a valuable tool to stay mentally healthy.

Go for a walk: try and walk mindfully, noticing the sounds around you and the feel of your foot on the ground. Give your brain a break by thinking about your body and the present moment, rather than speculating ahead about what you’re about to do.

Eat a mindful meal: try and slow down and taste the food in your mouth. Really explore the texture; the colour; the smell. You’ll find that if you slow your actions down, your mind will slow down too.

Turn off technology: instead of watching TV or texting for hours, why not try changing your routine?

Do something that allows you to concentrate on the sensations in your body like going for a walk or taking a bath.

T IS a great privilege to represent Camberwell and Peckham in Parliament and an honour to once again be re-elected as your MP and I rededicate myself to serving this diverse and dynamic constituency.

It’s my role to represent everyone - the people who were born and brought up in this area who represent its great heritage and traditions, the young people who have come to set up home here, the people who have come from all different parts of the world to raise their children here, to work hard and be part of this community. I will stand up for all of my constituents and help with any individual problems - whether or not you voted for me.

I’ll stand up for our precious public services particularly the NHS. And I’ll stand up for my constituents against unfairness - like the Bedroom Tax. I pay tribute to Simon Hughes for his many years as MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark. And I warmly welcome Neil Coyle as the new MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark. I look forward to working with him and with Helen Hayes MP for Dulwich and West Norwood who steps into the big shoes left by Tessa Jowell who has retired.

I will work with our dedicated Labour Council who will be even more necessary in the future to take forward plans for jobs and opportunities for young people and progress on housing. Especially against a background of unfair cuts that the Tories will inflict on Southwark Council. I’ll make it a priority to improve public transport in our area, and I’ll work with the Council and schools to ensure that all our schools are good enough to be parents’ first choice. And I look forward to working with our Greater London Authority representative Val Shawcross.

We will hold this Tory government to account. People need to be able to get to see their GP, to be seen in A&E without delay.

The Tories made promises on the NHS when they break them, we will challenge them every step of the way. They are threatening swingeing welfare cuts and we will do everything we can to make sure we protect those who will suffer the most. I'm interim leader of the Labour Party until September 12th and thereafter I will continue as MP for Camberwell and Peckham.

A&E is never the best enviroment for people with mental illness

IN REGARD to the demo to reopen the Maudsley Accident & Emergency ‘Cross party support to re-open Maudsley’s emergency clinic’ - Southwark News May 7th 2015.

The South London & Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLAM) responses are amazing!

They state that while they recognise that a busy A&E is not always the best environment for people in mental stress, I will rephrase this for them, a busy A&E is never the best environment for them.

They state there is a specialist psychiatric team at KCG 24/7, to refer them to an appropriate mental health service. Do they not understand that King’s A&E is so busy that it is not uncommon to have ten people in front of you, whoever you are, just to see the meet and greet nurse?

They also state it is important to remember that many people attend A&E when they experience a mental health crisis for the first time.

If you stand on the pavement outside the Maudsley, there is a large sign pointing to King’s A&E. I wonder if that is why people go

there?

So for a starter they could turn the sign around pointing to the Maudsley instead. We need the Maudsley hospital, the world experts in mental health, to say in simple language why they refuse to reopen the Maudsley A&E. Tom White, Southwark Pensioners Action Group.

Boris, can we have electoral reform?

I HAVE asked the Mayor of London if he would be willing to bring up the issue of electoral reform with his cabinet colleagues in Government.

The first past the post voting system has left one in five voters in London without anybody representing their beliefs and values in Parliament.

I’m worried that this leads to an increasing number of people feeling excluded by the democratic process and mistrusting politicians.

The Mayor was elected on a different system, which requires the winner to get more than half the vote.

The successful candidate has to reach beyond their own supporters to attract the second preference votes of those who prefer another party or candidate.

The London Assembly is elected at the same time as the Mayor, using a

form of proportional representation that mixes local constituency representatives and those elected on a London-wide basis.

As a result, the make-up of the London Assembly properly reflects the levels of support for each party in London, ensuring a diverse range of voices are heard.

I hope the Mayor will take his experience of these systems in London to heart, and join the calls for voting reform for the UK. Darren Johnson AM , Green Party Member London Assembly

HOW SAD to lose Simon Hughes as our MP.

He has served us well and is so listening, approachable and hands on too.

The P12 bus, formerly P13, was an idea of Simon’s - he carefully chose a route that served many nursing homes and care homes plus residents - the C10 to Victoria, and Simon insisted on Bermondsey Station Jubilee Line too.

Campaigns for NHS, schools and many more personal worries he took on board.

We would like to say a big thank you Simon.

PRIL WAS the sunniest on record, but the beginning of May brought cooler and windy weather.

These conditions caused problems to emerging new growth which is susceptible to wind damage, leaves were torn or dried out; stems were blown down, petals and blossoms battered. There is little that can be done except to ensure taller perennial plants like Delphiniums are staked.

The cooler night-time temperatures have provided a contrast to warmer days; this should help to keep plant growth healthy with less chance of diseases such as botrytis (mould) developing. Make sure plants do not dry out in windy weather - rainfall has been generally low during the past three months. Although May has seemed cool, temperatures are generally rising as we move towards the summer months Black fly and greenfly (aphids) are beginning to cause a nuisance so check plants and take appropriate action to control these pests. Clumps of aphids cause damage and disfigurement to leaves and buds, making plants more susceptible to diseases.

Try washing off the aphids with water using a hosepipe spray (not too fierce) to clean them from leaves, being careful not to cause damage. Repeat the process a day or two later and this may be enough to clear them – if this proves time consuming or there are many plants affected try a proprietary spray.

There are organic ones available which are quite effective. Aphids can colonise most plants especially annuals, but are a particular problem to roses so they will need checking throughout the flowering season.

Flowering plants are at their most numerous in May and it is one of the best months for the sheer variety of flowers. Roses have already produced their first blooms (regularly deadhead to encourage further flowering).

Rhododendrons and Azaleas reach their peak during May (although some varieties flower at different times). The summer Jasmine has just started to produce a profusion of white flowers with a heady sweet perfume. Lilac has fragrant flowers in colours from deep purple, pale lilac and white. Horse chestnut trees look stunning with upright creamy white or pink flowers.

The Elder is already in bloom ahead of its usual June flowering time; the Laburnum tree with its long yellow racemes is coming to the end of its flowering season. Two other striking plants which produce spectacular displays during May are Wisteria, a classic climbing shrub with long flower clusters in purple, and the Foxglove tree – which is becoming more popular due to its compact habit and large purple-pink flowers.

How Southwark’s houses of ill repute got the royal seal of approval

T

he infamous red light district in Amsterdam is synonymous with naughty stag weekends a long way from home, but one of the first licensed brothel districts was in twelfth century Southwark, when the whole shady show was run by a Bishop, writes Amelia Burr….

After Duke William conquered England in 1066, land and property were given out like sweets to those favoured by the new monarch - his friends and relations first followed by his knights and Flemish mercenaries.

Large estates in Southwark went to William’s half-brother - Bishop Odo of Bayeaux, who in turn handed them on to the Abbot at Bermondsey Priory.

When King Henry I (fourth son of William the Conquerer) came to the throne in 1100 after unceremoniously murdering his own brother, he granted the priory jurisdiction over Southwark. This meant that instead of Southwark being ruled by the City of London or the County of Surrey, it was now a ‘Liberty’ ruled by their ‘hlaford’ or ‘Lord of the Manor’.

about how the place was run, but also had the responsibility for dealing with every infraction of the law therein.

For one part of Southwark in particular, with street names like Sluts’ Hole, Cuckold Court, Codpiece Lane and Whores’ Nest, this was quite an undertaking and perhaps why in 1107, the Abbot leased the Liberty’s 70 acres of Bankside real estate to the Bishop Gifford of Winchester for eight pounds a year.

The good Bishop knew full well what he was taking on, according to E.J Burford’s latest version of his 1976 book, The Bishop’s Brothels, who writes: “The worthy and pious Bishop Gifford of Winchester clearly knew what he was leasing. It was the responsibility of the hlaford (Lord of the manor) to administer ecclesiastical correction to the ‘light-tayled huswives of the bank’ for the sins of fornication and whoredom as well as overseeing the ‘light’ houses themselves.”

The Bishop established his own court, which later became The Clink, to administer justice in the ‘Liberty of the Bishops of Winchester’, funded in part by the rents collected from the brothel owners and prostitutes.

In this way there was already a law and order circulating the brothels of

Bankside, but a nationwide venereal disease scare led to them being sanctioned by royalty.

Soldiers returning from the Crusades in the 1100s led to a scourge of syphilis and the like.

King Henry II came to the throne in 1154 and as a brothel owner himself, he knew action had to be taken to stop the sexually transmitted diseases spreading like wildfire.

In 1161 he produced a decree especially for the brothels of Bankside, which shows how notorious they were, comparable to Amsterdam’s modern day equivalent.

The Ordinances Touching the Government of the Stewholders in Southwark Under the Direction of the Bishop of Winchester set out 39 rules for running the eighteen houses of ill repute and gave Southwark’s brothels what amounted to royal recognition, a special status and protection they would enjoy for the next four centuries.

The rules enshrined in the new law governed the behaviour of the 350 prostitutes, the brothel owners and their visitors. For instance, if a man were to leave his sword behind by accident and a prostitute or brothel owner refuse to return it – the gentleman caller would be fined

twenty shillings. If he should instigate a breach of the peace because of his forgetfulness which led to an assault, he’d be slapped with a further fine of three shillings and four pence (which shows how common disturbances of this kind were in Bankside at that time).

One of the strangest rules of the ordinance forbade a prostitute from sleeping with someone for love, not money. She would be put in prison for three weeks and fined six shillings and eight pence and then put once on the cucking stool before being thrown out of town. (The cucking stool entailed being totally immersed in mud whereas the later ducking stool involved a mere dowsing).

Having sex for money was fine in Bankside but making love was reprehensible –a rule which must have been imposed for economic rather than moral reasons as time spent with a lover would mean less revenue for the brothel master and the Bishop.

To protect the Bishop’s profits further, a brothel owner found to be keeping a woman off the books would be fined a whopping 40 shillings and if she had snuck in without his knowing, she would be fined twenty shillings, put three times

on the cucking stool and thrown out of the Liberty.

There was also a fine imposed for soliciting custom by way of shouting or grabbing men as they passed.

Prostitutes were also forbidden to throw stones or grimace at the passing trade for fear of three days and nights in prison and a fine of six shillings and eight pence.

A hefty penalty of ten pounds would be demanded having a nun on the books, which may reflect the growing numbers of nuns who had drifted into an unholy way of life in that era. For the ‘working women’ one advantage was that they were protected from being accused of witchcraft practically an occupational hazard for prostitutes in the twelfth century.

The women were also not slavebound to their brothel masters, with the arrangement being much closer to that of landlord and tenant.

To clamp down on the dreaded syphilis, a quarterly inspection was carried out and those found suffering from ‘the burning disease’ were fined a crushing 100 shillings. The delightful options for treating the disease at that time ranged from vinegar and water, white wine and even fresh animal’s urine to be administered to the infected parts.

new gastropub has signalled a sign of hope for Peckham, writes Laura Burgoine...

I’m not being metaphorical here – stand on Peckham High Road and you can’t miss the blinking neon sign. The lights to the Hope pub on Melon Road flickered on in early May after years of planning and construction. The latest addition to Antic pub group’s 30 strong collection, the Hope follows on from the company’s successful south London ventures the EDT in East Dulwich, Westow House in Crystal Palace, Brixton’s Dogstar, the Tiger in Camberwell, Pratts and Payne in Streatham and the Effra Social in Brixton. Antic’s newest venture John the Unicorn is also due to open later in the year on Peckham’s Rye Lane.

The purpose built bar/pub is brand, spanking new but already feels like it’s been broken in by the local

Hope springs in Peckham boozers. Warm, comfortable and full of character without being cluttered or too hipster kitsch, it’s the kind of sprawling parlour room where you can nurse a pint or a glass of red wine and just melt into the upholstery.

Surveying the space, my friend concluded “I want this to be my flat”.

An extensive discussion of our mutual hatred of Danish minimalism ensued as we agreed on how inviting and cosy the décor at the Hope was. Built almost underground but not quite, the front of the pub is predominantly windows showing street level and a surprising amount of greenery that I’ve never really noticed in that part of Peckham before. Perhaps it’s the effect of seeing the area from a different perspective? Sunken in a lounge room submerged in a side street with low lighting and spacious tables lends an intimate feel to a large space.

A full kitchen is due to be installed but for now the pub is bringing in different street food vendors each weekend to cater for the punters. On the busy opening Saturday night I visited, hot dog aficionados Oh My Dog were the best in show. Somehow I’ve managed to go two decades without encountering a hot dog but I’ve been served two in the last week.

Hot dogs are certainly the hipster’s latest weapon of choice. The Peckham Poodle was a fabulous tribute to the local area, a German frankfurter, pineapple and tequila salsa, aioli, habanero hot sauce, fresh mint and coriander (£7.50). As someone with little experience in hot-dogging – which sounds dirtier than it is- I eased my way into the saucy sausage world with a smoked organic tofu dog (£7), which looked and tasted like a normal hot dog: American mustard, tomato relish, mature cheddar, onions and all.

The Mac ‘n’ Cheese sides (£4.50) were so in-demand they were sold out by 8pm.

The Hope has its beer range well covered with draught and bottled lagers as well as craft beer and locally and regionally sourced ales. “Real ale lovers can enjoy handpicked rotational brews from some of London’s finest microbreweries” the website boasts.

As we all know, the smaller the microbrewery, the cooler it is. Antic’s very own brews, fresh out of the vat from its new London based brewery Volden, are also coming soon. The wine range is decent -the house red, Abilius Tinto from Spain (£2.65 per 125ml), makes sinking into the upholstery far too easy and before I knew it the bartenders were ringing the last orders bell and I was wandering home along Rye Lane in a

wine fog.

Once the permanent kitchen is up and running, the Hope’s daytime café and kitchen will serve a selection of teas, coffees, brunches and sweet treats. During the evenings the kitchen will serve a seasonal modern British menu, offering a selection of homemade bar snacks, grazing bites, sharing platters, hearty mains and traditional Sunday roasts. In the mean time, upcoming food vendors include: Colombian Street Kitchen on June 1213 and Colonel Tom’s serving authentic Louisiana gumbo and sides on June 19-20.

The Hope has a midnight license so Cinderellas can catch the last overground home before it turns into a pumpkin.

It’s a winning addition to the local pub scene. Get your hopes up

Section 80, Housing Act 2004 Notice is hereby given that the London Borough of Croydon in exercise of its powers under section 80 of the Housing Act 2004 (“the Act”) has on the 16th day of March 2015 designated for selective licensing the area of the London Borough of Croydon as delineated and edged red on the Map at Annex A. The designation shall be known as the London Borough of Croydon Designation of an Area for Selective Licensing 2015. The designation applies to any privately rented property subject to any statutory exceptions set out below.

The designation falls within a description of designations for which the Secretary of State has issued a General Approval under section 82 of Housing Act 2004: Licensing of Houses in Multiple Occupation and Selective Licensing of Other Residential Accommodation (England) General Approval 2010 dated 30th March 2010. Therefore the designation need not be confirmed and will come into force on 1st October 2015 and unless previously revoked, this designation shall cease to have effect on 30th September 2020.

Upon the Designation coming into force on 1st October 2015 any person who operates a licensable property without a licence shall be guilty of an offence under Section 95(1) of the Act, and shall be liable to prosecution and upon summary conviction liable to a fine not exceeding £20,000. A person who breaches a condition of a licence is liable to prosecution and upon summary conviction liable to a fine not exceeding £5,000.

Rose sees his future at Champion Hill

HAMLET BOSS Gavin Rose believes he will be at Champion Hill for the ‘foreseeable future’ as he believes the club have it within their grasp to gain promotion to the Vanarama Conference South Division.

The Pink and Blues lost out in this year’s Ryman Premier League play offs but Rose believes his side could have survived should they have come through the end of season knock out format.

The long serving Hamlet boss said: “We are still committed to the club for the foreseeable future. We are already planning for next season, hopefully we can get things done

very soon and we can all have a break this summer.

“The delay in the play offs has made that more difficult as we didn’t know where we will be next season.”

He added: “I think if we had been promoted we could have competed at the next stage up. I am not saying we would have been league champions up another level but we would not have disgraced ourselves either.

“We believe in footballing terms we are equipped to survive at that level.

“The football club is also in a much better place than in was eighteen months ago too so all round we are in a good place.”

Rose is Hamlet’s longest serving manager and next season will be his seventh at the helm at Champion Hill.

He believes the club have much to be proud of on and off the pitch last year, and that can only be a good thing for those with Pink and Blue allegiances.

He said: “We had a high turnover of players and all things taken into account we have done well this season.

“We have an average budget in this league so for us to be competing at the top end of the table and playing above what you might expect from that budget is an achievement too.

“We also saw that the fans were once again like an extra man this season. They show massive spirit and there is no doubt that is a massive help to everybody at the club.

“It bodes well for the future of the club even beyond my time here.”

A CONTEST against German side Altona 93 will form part of Dulwich Hamlet’s preparations for next season.

The ink may just have dried on last season’s events but a contest against the Hamburg club, due to take place on July 11 at 6pm, is already in the diary for next pre-season.

The contest is part of a growing relationship between the two clubs that will culminate in the Dulwich first team travelling to Germany in 2018.

A supporters’ team will travel to Hamburg this weekend to take on their German counterparts, after taking in the final game of the German club’s campaign tomorrow night.

In order to travel in 2018 Hamlet fans are seeking to raise £8,000 for the trip and will hold a summer party event on July 10 at the Ivy House pub in Nunhead.

AN ASHLEE Hincks free kick proved to be the difference as the Lionesses continued their unbeaten start to the season with a tight win against Watford.

The new Millwall striker bagged a second half winner just before the sending off of The Hornets’ Anneka Nuttall on the hour mark.

There were no more goals after the red card and Hincks admitted the game had been a tough fight.

She said: “I thought it was a battle today for both teams but overall I think we deserved the three points.

“Personally, it was a good game for me and anything I can contribute to the team is something I want to be doing every week.

“It was nice to get on the scoresheet but, more importantly, it was nice to win.”

Millwall have now drawn five and won two of their seven games in FA Women’s Super League Division Two, and they are currently fourth in the table following the Watford victory.

Scoring got underway on the thirteen minute mark when Millwall’s Naomi Cole sent Shayla Burgess the wrong way from the penalty spot.

The hosts doubled their lead seven minutes later when Hincks’ free-kick found Rosella Ayane who rose highest to head home.

Ellie Mason pulled one back for Watford with a 30 yard screamer eight minutes before half time.

Millwall restored their two goal cushion seven minutes after the restart through Hincks’ curling free-kick.

But Watford refused to lie down and they were back in the contest on the hour mark when Nuttall slotted home

The Pink and Blues lost 2-1 to the Kent side last Thursday in their Ryman Premier League play off semi-final, and the seasiders went on to gain promotion on Sunday when they defeated Hendon in a winner takes all final.

A goal from Nyren Clunis was not enough for Hamlet seven days ago, despite a valiant effort away from home, as Margate’s Ryan Moss and Lewis Taylor netted for the home side to secure the win.

But that means two clubs, Margate and Maidstone, with big budgets have gone up a step in the non-league ladder leaving apparently a more level playing field next campaign.

But Rose thinks other clubs may be tempted to pump cash into their clubs, as they see a chance to gain promotion.

He told the News: “Maybe a team will look at the situation and see it as a good opportunity and put some money in to get that promotion.” He added: “I think this season teams knew with Margate and Maidstone there they had to raise their game, what with the budgets those teams had. You aren’t going to just hand them promotion in August so in a way them being there made the whole standard of the league much higher. With them not there now I think there is not an obvious

FIFTEEN-YEAR-old Kira Chathli became the first women to score a century for Dulwich Cricket Club when she chalked up 149 not out against Leeds and Broomfield CC.

The historic knock happened in the Ladies sides’ first game of this season and she continued her fine form in her next outing when she scored an unbeaten 86 not out.

A club spokesman said: “Kira has been playing at Dulwich Cricket Club since she was eight-years-old. She has developed quickly through the ranks and is now an excellent all round cricketer.

“This was highlighted last summer by her selection for the Surrey Ladies Senior team as well as regularly playing in the under seventeen side.

“Kira is due to sit her GCSE exams over the next few weeks, so we wish her good luck with her studies. We predict great things for this young cricketing star.”

Dulwich’s men first eleven picked up their first Ryman Surrey Championship Division Two win of the season at the weekend when they defeated Esher by ten runs.

“So now it’s a case of moving on and looking at getting that shot at an English title.”

But Garton still clearly thinks he was robbed of his fifteenth career victory at the York Hall on Saturday, although he admits he was not at his best.

“I thought I won the bout. I don’t think he deserved the draw and I thought I won by a clear two to three rounds.” Garton said.

“I did not box at my best, I was a bit wild at times and there were lots of little

things I was not happy about but I still think I did enough to win.”

The ex-Lynn ABC man will now take a break from the ring until September before he seeks a step up in grade.

Garton said: “My team think my plans have not changed despite the draw. There are two guys set to fight for the vacant English title and my team feel I should get a shot at one of them.

“But if that is not the case it is a matter of getting a bout that will put me in with a chance of a shot at an English title or an eliminator for the title.”

He added: “I have had three tough bouts one after the other and your body needs that rest. After that rest we will move onto other things.”

PECKHAM BOXER Johnny Garton admitted he is bitter despite successfully defending his Southern Area title against Martin Welsh last Saturday.

The 28-year-old Southwark man drew with Welsh in their ten round contest, and as champ Garton kept hold of his title.

But Garton told the News he was not happy with the verdict. He said: “The draw leaves a bitter taste because I have defended the title but it feels like the win has been taken away from me.”

TWO BOXERS from Fisher ABC have made it to the last four of the English Schoolboy championships after victories in Portsmouth last weekend.

Both Joe Cheeseman, thirteen, and Michael Burke came through against Southern Area representatives in the quarter finals of the Amateur Boxing Association (ABA) sanctioned nationwide tournament.

Cheeseman stopped Liam Holden from the Hastings based West Hill Club to ensure he made it through in the under 38.5kg weight category.

Bermondsey club mate Burke, fourteen, came through against John Lee from Sporting Ring ABC who hail from Camberley in Surrey.

Fisher head coach Steve Hiser said:

“From the reports I had they both boxed very well. Joe in particular was much better at the weekend than he was in the previous round.

“Joe is a clever boxer and he is the type who can work opponents out and beat them. I don’t see why he and Michael can’t go all the way in this competition.”

He added: “He beat a good lad from the Hastings club, a club we at Fisher have had a good rapport with in the past.

They are good people down there.”

“Apparently the guy Michael beat got to the final last year but this time around Michael beat him. It was a tough fight but we got the decision.

“Big things are expected of both Michael and Joe.” Both Cheeseman and Burke will travel to Bristol this weekend as they attempt to make it to the finals of their respective weight categories.

Surrey bowled out the visitors the second time around for 480 just after tea on the final day, leaving them to chase 216 off a minimum of 24 overs for victory.

Going into T20 mode Steven Davies and Jason Roy were promoted to the top of the order and both scored at a scintillating rate to bring Surrey to the edge of victory.

Roy notched up 67 off 39 balls whilst his opening partner scored a stunning 115 not out, off 69 balls, to ensure the Kia Oval outfit reached their target with 2.4 overs to spare.

skipper Gareth Batty, who picked up two wickets for 100 runs, set up the run chase but there was no doubt Davies and Roy were the stars of this show.

Earlier in the game a return of 4/72 from Matt Dunn helped bowl Leicestershire out for a first innings total of 292.

Surrey’s first innings was dominated by an unbeaten triple century from Kevin Pietersen, who eventually finished 355 not out, as Surrey chalked up 557 in reply.

Much furore followed Pietersen after he was told the knock would not get him back into England’s summer plans, and it says much for the focus of the Kennington side that they battled on to win a game the visitors looked set to take away from them.

Surrey are currently back in first class action with their game against Northants set to end after we go to press this week.

THE PREVIOUS campaign had concluded with an eight-game unbeaten run, and that sequence continued into the first month of the season as Millwall kicked off at home to Leeds United. Boss Ian Holloway made seven signings during pre-season, and fans had high hopes of being the Championship’s dark horses for promotion come May. Ricardo Fuller, Byron Webster, Angel Martinez, Magaye Gueye and Matthew Briggs were all added to the squad, along with Carlos Edwards, returning on a permanent basis after a successful loan spell. A third successive draw away at Wigan meant Millwall hadn’t won since August, a run of eight games.

That statistic ended with a 1-0 win at home to Cardiff in front of the Sky Sports cameras, with Danny Shittu’s header securing a first win in nine.

League position: 15th.

WITH SIX games in 22 days, December looked to be a crucial month to lower relegation worries but it proved only to heighten them.

The month began with a humiliating 5-1 defeat at home to Middlesbrough.

Jelle Vossen hit a first-half hat-trick to condemn the Lions to their heaviest home defeat of the season.

A trip to Brighton followed and as with the last fixture broadcast live on Sky it ended with a Millwall victory, lightning striking twice as Gregory netted to secure a first win in six.

But that would be the last win of 2014.

Bolton won at The Den before Christmas and on Boxing Day Millwall suffered a second heavy defeat in four games, this time shipping six at Carrow Road.

League leaders Bournemouth then won 20 at The Den to make it a thoroughly depressing end to the year. Just five league wins all season meant the

The Bees raced into a 2-0 lead but Millwall showed their fight again with two goals in two minutes from Gregory and Alan Dunne, However, Shittu’s own goal consigned Millwall to a seventh league defeat of the season. NEW YEAR brought the same old problems for a now demoralised Millwall side.

Scraping a replay with League One Bradford in the FA Cup third round wasn’t exactly the boost needed, but then a 1-0 defeat to relegation certainties Blackpool saw fans call for Holloway’s head.

If they were angry then, the FA Cup third-round replay made them incandescent with rage. Bradford romped to a 4-0 win with three of the goals coming in the first half.

The chairman John Berylson, however, decided against sacking the manager - for now.

DESPITE HOLLOWAY’s side winning at Forest, a 14th league defeat of the season followed at home to Huddersfield with Maierhofer scoring the only goal for Millwall in a 3-1 loss.

HOLLOWAY WAS sacked after defeats to title-chasing Middlesbrough and Norwich.

Chairman Berylson admitted he would have sacked Holloway after the Rotherham defeat but didn’t want his replacement to have to go through a baptism of fire against the league highfliers.

Neil Harris was named interim manager until the end of the season, with many feeling Millwall were all but relegated. Defeat in his first game in charge at Bolton was followed by two draws, 0-0 at home to Brighton and 2-2 at Griffin Park against Brentford despite being two goals up with five minutes left.

WITH RELEGATION confirmed it was a final day without the stress and panic of having to frantically keep up to date with scores from around the league.

A visit to Molineux would close the curtain on five years in the Championship for Millwall. But signs of what fans could expect in League One were in evidence.

Although Harris’s side lost 4-2 there were some positives. O’Brien got his second goal of the season

switch from a 4-2-3-1 formation to a more traditional 4-4-2, with Gregory and O’Brien leading

the Lions’ attack under the club legend.

LONDON RIVALS Charlton were the opponents for Harris’s first home game in charge. The 2-1 win was a first at home in 13 games, a run that had stretched back to the end of October.

Watford were the next visitors to The Den and the promotionchasing Hornets stung the Lions’ survival hopes with a 2-0 win.

The pressure was building as Wigan rolled into town for the proverbial six-pointer. Jimmy Abdou’s header -- Millwall’s goal of the season -- set the hosts on their way to moving within four points of Rotherham. Gueye sealed the win after Upson was sent off for retaliating following a nasty challenge on O’Brien.

It was the first win at The Den on a Tuesday night since the 3-1 defeat of Blackpool on

September 17, 2013. A 0-0 draw with Cardiff followed four days later but a 2-0 reverse at Blackburn deepened relegation fears.

Millwall were handed a lifeline when relegation rivals Rotherham were docked three points for fielding an ineligible player in their win against Brighton. But, after going 3-1 up against Derby, the Rams scored two late goals to leave the Lions staring at the drop.

The Millers had a game in hand against FA Cup semi-finalists Reading and a win would seal the fate of Harris’s men. The Yorkshire side confirmed Millwall’s relegation to League One with a game to spare after beating Steve Clarke’s men 2-1.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE Andy Ambler has said the Trinidad and Tobago international has been invited to continue his rehabilitation from a cruciate ligament injury with the club.

Injured Millwall defender could still earn a new contract

The 36-year-old was stretchered off in the goalless draw with Nottingham Forest on September 20 and has been out injured ever since.

And Ambler confirmed Edwards could yet earn a new contract with the club.

“Carlos Edwards is one that has been released but hasn’t,” Ambler explained.

“We told Carlos to come back and train with us and see if he can continue his recovery.

“His injury was a big blow and Carlos could earn a new contract. That’s the only grey area of all the players released.”

Alan Dunne was the highest-profile player not to be offered a new contract and was subsequently let go and while Ambler thanked the defender for his services to the club, he admitted none of the players released were a surprise to him.

“With respect, the most high profile one is Alan Dunne,” Ambler said. “He’s been a great servant to the club over a number of years but there comes a time when the manager has to make decisions.

“We knew a year and a half ago there were a lot of players out of contract at this time of the year and a lot of those players didn’t really feature during the season if you look at the Justin Hoytes of this world. Danny Shittu, after Christmas, didn’t feature so I wasn’t surprised at all.

“If you look at the young players released we’ve got a good batch coming through and you can’t keep them all so we had to make decisions on that.”

With wholesale changes afoot for next season, the Lions’ chief executive said the atmosphere has been a “strange” one since relegation was confirmed.

“It’s a strange feeling the last few weeks,” Ambler said. “The fact that you get relegated is not a nice feeling. I’ve never experienced it before, but at the same time the optimism around the club hasn’t been like this for two or three years. There’s a great sense of optimism around and, as Neil put it, we’ve got our Millwall back.

“You wouldn’t have thought it was a relegation year with the way that people were here and the way they are looking forward to next season. The chairman is enthused more than I’ve seen in recent times.

“We’ve got to build on the good start that the youngsters have had on their careers. If you look at Sid Nelson and Aiden O’Brien we have to build on that over the summer to bring a bit of experience in and not block the pathway of the young kids.

“Fred needs to come back and hit the ground running and hopefully he will after his experience at Wycombe.

“Lee Gregory will have a second season in the Football League coming from a non-league team. Let’s hope that a year in the Championship has taught him enough to be one of the top scorers in League One next year. “ I think there is a lot of optimism all around but there’s a lot of hard work to be done between now and August.

“I think what Neil has brought to the club, with David Livermore, is the Millwall way. We lost our way with previous managers and I won’t criticise them.

“Everyone knows about Neil Harris and the way he played and when you look at the structure of the coaching staff throughout, it’s Millwall-based.

“Neil’s gone back to basics. He said we were a 4-4-2 club and he played his best football, he felt, when we were playing a 4-4-2 formation and he thinks we should go back to that. “ I think that’s what he’s done the last 10 games and people have seen the difference in his approach to games. I know Neil won’t accept any less than 100 per cent - not just on match days, but in training as well.

“He expects the players to have the same passion for Millwall that he has and I think that’s rubbing off.”

STEVEN REID said he broke down in tears in an Aldi carpark after tweeting news of his retirement from football.

The former Millwall player was dogged by injury throughout his career and said he deliberately chose a quiet place to make the announcement.

“The tears flowed as the phone lit up with overwhelming messages from friends and fans. There was no turning back now. All the emotion that I'd bottled up came out. I was a wreck - and glad I’d parked in a remote spot.”

ANOTHER FORMER – if slightly more controversial – Lion, Kevin Muscat, had a happier time of it this week in Australia.

Muscat, who played for Millwall between 2003 and 2005, guided Melbourne Victory to their third ALeague title with a 1-0 win over Sydney FC. The former Australian international captained Millwall to a first ever FA Cup final in 2004 where they lost to Manchester United.

He had a reputation as a fearsome competitor and he has carried that into his coaching career as he becomes the first person to win the A-League as a player and a coach.

Some of Millwall’s highest earners have been moved off the wage bill and the screen won’t be replaced. Instead, a more modest scoreboard will take its place, reflective of the loss of income that relegation to League One means.

What is expected is a new surface that will be conducive to the high-tempo approach that boss Neil Harris will attempt to instil in what will be a young side sprinkled with experience.

The fact that two of those five wins

came in Harris’s brief spell perhaps explains the sense of optimism that doesn’t usually accompany relegation.

“It won’t bother me, the staff, or the players,” he said. “We’ll be as professional as we possibly can be.

“Nowadays we’ve ideas on the best way to travel, whether it’s train or coach.

The guys eat the right food, take the right supplements.

“With modern-day footballers travelling shouldn’t be an issue. The problem is you’ve got a late-night game on a Wednesday and you’ve to play again on the Saturday so that affects sleep patterns and recovery. But we’ll be doing everything professionally right.

“We’ve a young, fit, hungry squad and they don’t care where they play, they just want to go and play football.”

There is a directness to Harris, as well as his strong connection to the club, that endears him to fans. Maybe the experience that he went through in his early 20s hardened a sense of urgency.

“We’ve achieved nothing so far, other than looking like a Millwall team.

“It’s an absolute given at this club that you have to look like a Millwall team and you have to work like a Millwall team and you have to put in Millwall performances. I can guarantee that 100 per cent.”

FORDE ON THE MOVE?

DAVID FORDE was this week linked with a switch to Derby County as speculation continued about his future.

Chief executive Andy Ambler, however, thinks that a potential move north might be too much of an upheaval after seven years in south London.

“He is settled here with his family, settled into his lifestyle. That’s the other side of football transfers at this time of year as well.

“You have to look closely at people’s lifestyles and what they want to do.”

Fulham and Reading have also been linked with the Ireland keeper.

MILLWALL CHIEF executive Andy Ambler says the club have changed their recruitment process and are aiming to avoid any late scramble to complete the squad before the start of next season.

Andrew Mills was recently appointed head of recruitment and the immediate priorities are bringing in a new striker and a left-back.

Uncertainty also surrounds the future of David Forde, who signed a three-year deal with the club last summer.

However, relegation to League One triggered a reduction in his wages and with Euro 2016 a year away and

the Republic of Ireland still in with a chance of qualifying for France, Forde will feel that to regain his international place he needs to be playing at a higher level.

Should he depart then Ambler said the club will seek to replace him with an experienced keeper and that a number of targets are being identified for each position that needs strengthening.

The Lions are also waiting to hear back from Jimmy Abdou and John Marquis who have been offered new deals. Ambler also stressed manager Neil Harris will ultimately decide who the club signs.

“We want to have at least five or six credible targets for each position,” Ambler told the News. “Andrew’s been brought in to head up the

recruitment department and we’re looking at it long term.

“Neil’s really happy with the way it’s panning out. He’s seen plenty of games in the last few weeks. The under-21s are still playing and there have been (Championship, League One and Two) playoff games.

Obviously he’ll have the final say in any signings.”

“We have to monitor what happens with David Forde. The ideal situation is you’d have an experienced keeper with a young one coming in.

“Goalkeepers tend to be available quite a lot but the problem is you have to look into their background.

That’s the importance of the recruitment department.”

The Lions are also actively seeking an under-21 coach with Harris setting

out a vision of how he wants young players at the club developed. Ambler added: “Neil did a tremendous job the last few years and he’s got ideas how he wants the role to be continued.

“We spread the net wide to try to bring the right person in.

We advertised through the PFA, the LMA and we’re in the middle of interviews for the position.”

But he emphasised that the current focus is on securing long-term deals.

His predecessor, Ian Holloway, staked the club’s Championship survival on a number of loan deals last January but the strategy didn't pay off despite the Premier League experience brought by players such as Jos Hooiveld, Gary Taylor-Fletcher and Michael Tonge.

Perhaps mindful of that failed approach, Harris stressed that any potential short-term deals would only be to cover sudden emergencies or used to assess a player’s suitability to joining on a more permanent basis.

“Ideally, at this stage, we’re definitely looking at permanent signings,” he said. “A year-long loan is almost like signing a player on a one-year contract.

I’m not against doing that sort of thing, but short-term loans have got to be for the benefit of the club.

“If it’s a short-term fix it’s because we’re trying to improve what we’ve got. We might need to look at a shorter deal because of injuries or suspensions, things like that.

“I’d always look at a short-term deal with a view to something longer, so it’s a good opportunity for us to look at someone we want to sign. It can’t be a loan just to make up the numbers. “ T h a t ’ s sometimes been the case but we want to come away from that, we want our own players, we want Millwall players.”
