Peckham festival returns After a Covid-induced break, Peckham Festival is back this month for a weekend-long extravaganza celebrating the creativity, culture and people that make the area so special. Made in Peckham, the Festival’s open spaces event, will see over 50 artists and creatives open their studios and work spaces to the public - from the ceramics studios in Blenheim Grove and fine art painters in the Bussey Building, to the factories of the Old Kent Road. Copeland Park will act as Festival hub, with live music, workshops, performances and street food stalls. The Festival promises something for everyone, and never fails to deliver.

Big news, culture vultures: Claude Monet’s Water Lilies and Agapanthus arrives in the UK for the first time ever this month, as part of major new exhibition Helen Frankenthaler: Radical Beauty at the Dulwich Picture Gallery. AUTUMN LITERATURE SEASON AT SOUTHBANK CENTRE The London Literature Festival returns to Southbank next month after a Covid-hiatus - and boy, are they back with a bang. Calling all makers and crafters

O

xo Tower Wharf is offering three months rent-free for designer-makers and craft-based creative businesses keen to join its vibrant community.

The iconic riverside building, at the heart of London’s South Bank, is home to studios for designermakers and craft businesses including jewellers, ceramicists, milliners, textile artists and more, all making, showcasing and selling their products. Now they have a number of spaces available to new tenants.

Thanks to support from the Culture Recovery Fund, Oxo Tower Wharf is thrilled to be able to offer a generous three-month rent free period to successful studio applicants.

“These opportunities come at a pivotal time for Oxo as we re-focus on craft and design and seek talented makers to join us,” says Design Curator Sophie Cain. “We’re excited to be safeguarding spaces for creatives in central London and our building provides a unique opportunity for makers to have a studio and showroom in one, with opportunity for an open door to the public too!”

Kelli-Leigh: south London’s rising star ― Cara Cummings

S

inger-songwriter Kelli-Leigh should be one of the most famous British artists in music right now. The vocalist on number one singles I Got You by Duke Dumont and I Wanna Feel by Second City, she’s already smashed the international charts - but struggled to gain recognition as an artist in her own right. Not for long. With her own flourishing record label and new single Feelin’ U scoring more than a million streams already, Kelli-Leigh won’t be in ‘the next big thing’ for long. She talks to the South Londoner about growing up in Gypsy Hill, touring with Adele and changing the music industry from within.

Tell us about you - were you born with a microphone?

I'm south London born and bred. I grew up in Gypsy Hill and Crystal Palace, in a working class home. My mum is a singer, my uncle is a singer and another uncle is a drummer. Music is in my blood, really.

Singing has been my everything. I was badly bullied at school, but the one thing they wouldn’t bully me for was my singing. It was my safety net.

Growing up, I always dreamt of being a singer, but wasn't sure how to get there. I went to the Brit School, which at that time was the only free performing arts school in the UK. My class had Leona Lewis, Katie Melua, Luke from The Kooks…

It was a mental class to be in, watching everyone blow up and do amazing things.

I was a backing singer first, touring with Leona and Adele at the Grammys, the Oscars, the Royal Albert Hall. Then in 2013, I had a car accident in south London, on the road between Catford and Bromley. I was in a wheelchair with a severely prolapsed disc. But everything happens for a reason - my backing singing career was stopped in its tracks, and then Duke Dumont asked me to sing I Got U and it went to number one. I decided to take a chance on myself at that point.

How would you describe your music, and influences?

My music is quite eclectic - I call it ‘anthemic pop’. I took inspiration from stealing my mum’s

Skunk Anansie CDs as a teenager, to Whitney, Ella Fitzgerald, reggae, U2... I feel like a lot of my music has soul, because that’s what comforted me growing up, and moved me emotionally. I love the emotive sound of any singer that can make you feel something; I really try to put that in my music. Of course, sometimes you just want a banging dance record!

You’ve toured with some incredible artists. What was it like being on the road with Adele?

It was my first ever tour, my first ever time in America. I was wide eyed! Touring in itself is so strange because you’re with a bunch of people you don’t know, living together on a bus and in and out of hotels. You become each other's lives for however many months you're together. It’s mad.

What really stood out was just how well Adele believes in herself. Seeing the audience singing back her songs, that she’s poured her heart into, was so inspiring. That's why I wanted to back myself - I knew if I continued as backing singer, that’s all I’d ever be. Backing singers are incredible, but in the music industry you’re not seen as both that and a solo artist. You have to choose. My dream since I was a child was to be an artist for myself - I had lyrics I wanted to write, a sound I wanted to put across by someone who looks and sounds like me, and it was important for me to do that.

Now I’m performing my own shows, and I’m seeing people sing back lyrics that I’ve written.

It means the world to me, because it shows that I was right to back myself and give myself the opportunity. That feeling is a rush, a high; it’s energy transferred with the crowd.

How did it feel when I Got U was nominated for a Grammy?

Insane, to be honest! And surreal, because a lot of people thought it was Whitney singing, which is a huge compliment as she’s one of my biggest idols. But at the same time, the biggest regret of that record is that my name isn’t on it, anywhere. I realised how green I was, going from being really grateful that I got paid to sing it to realising: hold on a minute, my vocal is being taken advantage of here and no one's looking out for my rights. A lot of singers, especially singers who are black or mixed race or of low income, and who don’t have managers or teams and protection, are going into situations where they're recording something and not realising what the wider implications are. I didn’t discover that until a year or so ago - on I Got U and all these other records, I wasn't receiving the right royalties.

The industry needs to be more aware. I’ve just put out a document with the Musicians Union for sessions singers and featured artists to distinguish what your rights should be.I’m really proud of it.

Tell us about starting Music Core. Why strike out on your own?

I’ve sung on three top ten singles, but I had to set up my own label to be recognised and respected. That’s a big issue for women in music we’re treated as less than our male counterparts.

I was about to change my name and become a whole different type of artist - I was fed up with dance music. Labels weren’t interested in me, but they were interested in me singing for male DJproducers. I was getting more and more frustrated by people sliding into my DMs to ask me to do something for them. I was so down by that point, constantly thinking: what more do I need to do to prove that I'm a viable artist? So I thought: I’m going to have to do this for myself.

In hindsight, I had no clue what I was doing.

There’s no user manual for artists setting up by themselves! But for all the craziness and misgivings, it felt so empowering to hear my songs on the radio.

I knew I was doing the right thing.

It does make me think of little me, in the flat I grew up in in south London, singing into a hairbrush… I want to say to her: “You can do this one day.”

You’re an outspoken advocate for artists of colour in the industry. Can you tell us a little about that, and your own experiences?

In the wake of George Floyd’s murder, and the Black Lives Matter protests last year, I saw a fellow singer asking on Twitter: ‘Can we talk about black artists in dance music?’ I responded, saying I’ve sung three top ten singles, two of which got Grammy nominations, and I’m still unrecognised…

The response was crazy. There was lots of support, but a lot of racist backlash too. Some people were like, “We already have Beyonce”, or “She clearly just wants a MOBO.” Which sort of proves the point.

But the real positive is that I’ve made such great

friendships with other artists who’ve had similar experiences. There are so many of us going: “That’s happened to me, too.” It’s easier for women to be divided and conquered - we often brush off things.

But the more we call out things that aren’t right, then we can stand together, united, and make a change.

What does south London mean to you?

I feel like south London has spirit. South London is a place I'm so proud of. There are so many amazingly talented people who’ve come from here, because when you come from a place of adversity and it's harder to move fast, you become more creative.

That’s part of your freedom - growing up with no money meant consuming loads of music and films, using your imagination, and thinking big. There's a collective creative strength in south London. I’m proud of it.

Are there any other local artists that you’re excited about at the moment?

I’m a massive fan of Jake Isaac and Mysie. Jake’s incredible - an amazing artist and singer, born and raised in south London. He’s really starting to blow up. The soul in his voice is insane. Mysie won the Ivor Novello Rising Star Award. She’s an incredible singer, too.

What does the future hold for Kelli-Leigh?

I’m still promoting my new single Feelin’ U at the moment. The next record is coming. I’m very excited; it feels like my voice is finally being heard.

One day, I’d love to walk the Grammy or Brit Awards red carpet as an artist for myself. Receiving a certificate for what I’ve achieved, with my name on it, is my goal. In the meantime, if I can help change the music industry and make it a better place along the way, that’s where my power lies.

Dulwich Park Fair is back - and better than ever!

I

f you go down to Dulwich Park this month - well, on 5th September from 12pm-5pm anyway - you’re in for a big surprise… After a Covid-induced hiatus, the Dulwich Park Fair is back. And by all accounts, this year’s festivities will be the best yet.

An entirely volunteer-led event, the Fair promises fun for all the family - with community spirit at its heart. “We try to run a really friendly, family-oriented event,” says Emily Montague, Chair of Dulwich Park Friends. “There’s lots of free entertainment, interesting food and market stalls… It’s such a lovely atmosphere.

“We really try to have something for everybody, which you can try without spending lots of money.

We’re not here to make money from the fair - we run it on a shoestring - but to try and promote local organisations and raise money for local charities.”

That’s been the Fair’s aim since the very start, says Emily.

“Fifteen or so years ago, there was a very big commercial fair in Dulwich Park,” she explains.

“Although it was fun, it caused a lot of damage to the park. We had huge complaints about noise, fireworks, you name it. So we approached the council as Dulwich Park Friends and said: how about a more community-led event?

“We get a small grant from the Neighbourhoods Fund, and all that is put into entertainment - this year we have a really lovely dog show, which will raise money for The Blue Cross. Dog ownership has shot up during lockdown so we thought: ‘This is the year!’”

After a tough spell for the entertainment industry, Emily is keen to support local performers at this year’s Fair. “Lots of performers have had a really grim year,” she says. “We have two stages this year - The Stage and The Arena - and we’ll have bands playing throughout the day. We’ve never done that before.

“We’ve got choirs, brass bands, dance groups including one with performers all in their 70s and 80s! The range of people is just wonderful. We’ll have a really interesting and eclectic range of food, too - Spanish paella, Jamaican cuisine, Chinese…

“If you have small children, there’s a chance to pet the animals at Vauxhall City Farm. It might be the first time a 3-year-old has got up close to an alpaca!”

And whilst this year’s Fair will be an escape from the trials of the last year, Covid safety measures are paramount. “We’re aware that Covid is still around, so we’re encouraging people to spread out across the park,” Emily stresses. “There will be hand sanitation stations at stalls, and we’re asking our participants to ensure Covid safety measures are in place. I would love people to come and relax, safely, and support all these wonderful local things that are happening.”

Modern Indian dining spicing up Rosendale Road ― Laura Burgoine

S

ince opening its doors in May, the critically acclaimed Heritage Dulwich has gone from strength to strength, reimagining rich and varied traditions of the subcontinent and transforming them into modern Indian dining.

Located on Rosendale Road in West Dulwich, the menu takes inspiration from family recipes passed down through generations, and celebrates the diverse and varied ingredients and techniques found across regional India.

Drawing on more than 30 years of experience, Executive Chef, Dayashankar Sharma, has spent years developing an in-depth knowledge of India’s many hyper-regional cuisines. From travelling all four corners of the country working for Oberoi and Taj Hotel Groups, to heading up kitchens at some of London’s most sought after fine-dining and Michelin-starred Indian restaurants including Tamarind, Imli and Zaika, Chef Sharma went on to open Grand Trunk Road in South Woodford, before launching his most exciting project yet: Heritage Dulwich.

Growing up in the north Indian state of Rajasthan, Chef Sharma’s signature culinary style was formed from the myriad traditional techniques he learnt as a child, as well as those later discovered on his travels. A master in subtly spiced dishes and beautifully balanced flavours, Chef Sharma’s refined interpretations of classic dishes has brought him many accolades including the title of Best Chef at the Asian and Oriental Chef Awards 2020, and Chef of the Year at the Asian Food & Restaurant Awards 2019.

Holy smoke! ― As told to Cara Cummings

Ruben Dawnay launched his hand-delivered smoked meat and fish company during lockdown with nothing but a domestic barbeque, a bicycle and big dreams. His taco kits, Reuben sandwiches, salt beef and smoked salmon are taking south London by storm - and Ruben’s only just turned 20. Meet the fresh-faced foodpreneur you’re definitely going to see big things from in the future…

“When I first started I was doing all the smoking on a home BBQ. I’d put three pork shoulders in at once, on a rotation system.

I saved up and bought a big smoker from the States - not too big though, because it’s still my mum’s garden!”

Ruben’s Reubens is a south London smokehouse that specializes in salt beef and pastrami. I smoke really high-quality meats and fish, and some veg. At the moment, I’m just doing deliveries; there's no real bricks and mortar yet.

When I was doing my A-levels back in 2018, I saw a poster for the Brixton Kitchen Competition, with a chance to win a spot in the Market if you could come up with a cool food idea. I wasn’t sure what I was going to do after my exams, so I thought it could be really cool to enter.

I went home, brainstormed and came up with Ruben’s Reubens. I knew about the reuben sandwich, a New York deli sandwich piled high with salt beef, sauerkraut and sauces, and I thought - what the hell, I’ll try it! I’d never made one before but I sent in the dream and they really loved it.

Entering the competition sparked something in me. Food was always an important part of my life; my parents are fairly “foodie”. My mum’s halfPolish, so we eat a lot of rye bread and beetroot - Jewish New York deli type of food. Because that was part of my life, it was easy to embrace.

When I finished school I started training in kitchens, whilst building the brand on the side. And then Covid happened, and I thought: oh my god, everything I’ve done this year is gone.

But when I did a few sides of salmon for neighbours, I realised I could go down the delivery route. I started twisting it up with taco kits; it’s super social, fun food. The business has grown from around 400 followers pre-lockdown to 4000 now!

I feel so overwhelmed and grateful. All the support has been amazing.

When I first started I was doing all the smoking on a home BBQ. I’d put three pork shoulders in at once, on a rotation system. I saved up and bought a big smoker from the States - not too big though, because it’s still my mum’s garden! But it doubled my capacity and made it easier. I do all my smoking in 1-2 days, getting up at 5am. It takes a crazy amount of time, because you’re cooking at the lowest setting and letting the meat do it’s thing.

The spice rub is important. At first I did super complicated spice rubs, but I think that actually masks the taste of the smoke. Now I use paprika, black pepper and salt mostly, with a little Mexican chilli powder for a taco kit. It’s about letting the

smoke do its work.

It’s cool to think about Polish smokehouses, and wonder if there’s anyone in my family who did it in the past. It used to be a way to preserve food - smoked salmon wasn’t a luxury thing, it was so it would last for months. Same with fermenting things: it was all to be able to eat veg in the winter.

It’s cool to think that here I am in Brixton, doing similar things now.

Brixton has been the perfect place to do this.

The support has been crazy. The best bit is giving the kits to customers. When you see how happy it makes them, and they send you texts saying they enjoyed it - that’s so rewarding.

PICTURE PERFECT Art dealer and Old Etonian Jay Jopling’s White Cube is one of the world’s leading contemporary art galleries, with spaces on Bermondsey Street, in central London’s Mason’s Yard, and in Hong Kong.

The converted 1970s warehouse opened in 2011, and was the biggest European commercial gallery at the time of its launch.

They opened a new print room on the street last year, right before the Covid-19 pandemic emerged. Octogenarian glassblower Peter Layton opened his first studio on the river in Rotherhithe in the ‘70s, pioneering the British studio glass scene and transforming it from an industrial medium to a collectable art form. The artist has created highprofile commissions for the Tate, the National Gallery and even Prince Charles, who held an exhibition at Buckingham Palace (but didn’t buy anything!) In 1995, Peter moved to Leathermarket before making Bermondsey Street home, over ten years ago. Today, Peter has some of the best glassblowers in the country working out of his Bermondsey Street studio.

Zandra Rhodes’ Fashion and Textiles Museum At any hour of the day you’ll find Dame Zandra Rhodes hard at work in her penthouse above the Fashion and Textile Museum, which she founded in 2003. The location was suggested to her by her great friend sculptor, jeweller and performance artist Andrew Logan, who lived around the corner at the time. The museum is the first European building that Mexican architect Ricardo Legorreta designed.

Meet modern Women’s Institute group the Borough Belles Katherine Blackler

T

he Borough Belles WI are running a fundraising stand at Bermondsey Street Festival again this year and they can’t wait to meet you!

This buzzing branch of the Women’s Institute has around 50 members and has been bringing local women together since 2009. Whilst they’ll be predominantly sporting tempting cakes and delicacies at the stand, their monthly evening meetings range from insightful speakers and presentations to getting stuck into various craft activities or campaigning to improve our world, all done over a cuppa and a tasty treat!

As restrictions ease, they aim to put on a mixture of online and in-person main meetings and the ancillary activities that have been such a support for members during the pandemic such as Film Club, Supper Club, Culture Club, and regular groups for dancing, walking, drawing, embroidery,

books and lido-swimming will offer virtual and in-person offerings too. There really is something for everyone within this WI group (being able to make or bake things is certainly not a prerequisite to join!)

THE FOODIE FAVES Raw English honey brand Bermondsey Street Bees has generated more than its fair share of buzz since the company’s beginning in 2007. In 2020, Bermondsey Street Bees took home a Great British Food Award, and a Great Taste Awards Golden Fork for Best Product in London and the South-East. Run by husband and wife team Dale Gibson and Sarah Wyndham Lewis, who began bee-keeping on the rooftop above their office and flat in Bermondsey Street and now have 14 sites across Essex and Hertfordshire.

eople on the hunt for creative working solutions need look no further than Greenwich Peninsula’s Design District, which now offers a variety of workspace arrangements and affordable rent, including a members’ club open for business from September.

Tipped as a permanent home for the creative industries, Design District comprises 16 buildings, designed by 8 pioneering architects, one minute from North Greenwich tube station. Creatives can rent a floor, or an entire building, for just £5 per square foot rent for the first 12 months.

Design District recognises the importance of creative industries in London, and the architects behind it were given the brief of designing a space they would like to work in. The result is high ceilings, and light-filled rooms that are all naturally ventilated.

For freelancers, small businesses and people looking for more flexible arrangements, members’ club Bureau allows access to the creative eco-system, with memberships starting from £80 per month. It’s designed to help creatives thrive, offering space to collaborate and do focused work.

The club offers nine meeting rooms and a range of events spaces, including a forum and restaurant that can be used for talks, networking and launch events. Bureau members also have access to the rooftop basketball court.

Bureau gives freelancers and smaller businesses a chance to be closely connected with other creative businesses. n early analysis of this year’s GCSE results in Southwark shows improvements across all areas compared with last year.

Southwark Council said that despite the disruption during the pandemic, the key measure attainment eight - which shows achievement across eight qualifications including English and maths - has gone up by 5.5 from 53.7 points in 2020 to 59.2 points this year.

The percentage of students achieving a standard pass this year is at 84.2 per cent, up 8.8 percentage points from 75.4 per cent in 2020.

Meanwhile, 64.9 per cent achieved a strong pass (up 11.5 percentage points from 2020) in both English and mathematics.

Results for the English Baccalaureate also show improvements, with 55.4 per cent of pupils securing a standard pass (up 7.9 percentage points to 47.5 per cent in 2020) and 42.9 per cent of pupils achieving a strong pass (up 11.3 percentage points to 31.6 per cent in 2020) After the cancellation of exams, this is the second successive year grades have been awarded to students by teachers based on their assessment of mock exams, homework, coursework or mini-

exams, another form of test.

atharine Woodcock, Headmistress of Sydenham High School GDST, takes the positives from the pandemic: “As we head towards what we hope is the light at the end of what has been, at times, an extremely dark tunnel we have to be thankful for what this time has taught us. The importance of community, values and caring for one another. The new ways in which we have adapted and evolved: technology at the forefront of much of what we do, balanced with a deeper focus on mindfulness and staying active away from devices. Innovative teaching and more efficient working practices have meant that ahead of the new term in September, the school and its pupils are perhaps in a better position to thrive than ever before.

As it stands, our pupils have the best chance in nearly two years of having an uninterrupted year of learning and being around their peers. Mental health has become a bigger priority across the board, and we welcome athletes role-modelling the importance of mental fitness alongside physical health. Something we have long heralded.

Though moving towards familiar behaviours and routines at the end of last term helped to provide

stability, the necessary adaptability required by the pandemic has fostered key skills of resilience and problem-solving which will stand pupils in good stead for the future.

If another lockdown occurs, our pupils are well equipped to deal with, and overcome, the implications that come with that. Throughout the pandemic our pupils learned to “keep finding joy in small things and remember for every negative situation, if you look hard enough, you can always find a positive!” which is a lesson we all can learn.

The summer holidays provided a time for rest, relaxation and reflection and enabled all facets of the school to be able to go full steam ahead come September. The new term brings with it something of a new beginning and here at Sydenham High School, we are more than ready for it.

James ‘Jim’ Mark, Matt Warren and Chris Godwin run award-winning sustainable urban gin company Jim and Tonic. The trio of friends share their top south London tips, from where to find a midweek live music singalong to the best full English this side of the river...

What made you want to set up Jim and Tonic in south London?

JM: South London is where I first moved when I came to London 13 years ago. It felt like the right place for the business to call home - the right vibe, people and location.

MW: We want Jim and Tonic to be accessible and inclusive, so the opportunity to operate at Mercato Metropolitano in Elephant & Castle - a street food market with a community soul and a sustainable outlook - was the perfect location for our brand’s sustainable, urban values.

What does a typical week in south London involve for you?

Favourite south London pubs?

London Bridge has great coffee, good music and al fresco seating - a bit of a suntrap in the afternoon.

CG: I have to shout out the Old Queen's Head café on Black Prince Road in Lambeth. It’s nothing pretty, but when you’ve been up since 5am lugging barrels of gin and want a decent full English, then the Old Queen's Head is the place to go.

MW: The Crown & Anchor in Brixton - good craft beer and spirits.

JM: The Windmill on The Cut or The Ship, Wandsworth for a sunny weekend.

CG: The Old King's Head, an old school London boozer tucked away on Roupell Street behind Waterloo, which bizarrely has a fully fledged Thai restaurant attached to it.

We fancy a boogie. Where should we head?

MW: St Christopher's Inn on Borough Road is a great place for a sing-a-long. They have live performances mid-week, belting out crowd classics.

How has south London shaped your vision for Jim & Tonic?

JM: Massively. There’s so much energy, creativity and ideas here that it can’t fail to rub off on you.

From pop up stores and food concepts to brilliant distilleries and breweries, South Londoners have done some awesome things and it’s great to be a part of that.

How would you describe south London - and south Londoners - in a nutshell?

MW: As a startup with three bars in London, a busy events business and growing e-commerce and trade sales, we spend most of our weeks hands-on running and developing the company.

Weekends are spent finding good brunch spots, strolling around south London’s amazing green spaces and street food markets and checking out new bars and pop-ups. We all met playing football for Clapham Rovers FC, so Sunday mornings are spent in the Southern Sunday League before retreating to a good pub on the river for a roast.

CG: I don’t think you can - it’s so diverse. However, one thing that probably binds most South Londoners together is a mindset of accepting, embracing and almost encouraging change and progression. You only have to look at somewhere like Mercato Metropolitano in Elephant & Castle (built on a derelict site of an old paper factory) to see how south London will always spring a new thing on residents and visitors.

Top south London restaurant tips?

Finally: what’s the one place, thing or activity on our side of the river that everyone should try at least once?

MW: Jose, on Bermondsey street. A cosy independent tapas bar with amazing food.

JM: I love Restaurant Storey in Bermondsey, Mercato Metropolitano for a food market feel and Kudu in Peckham.

CG: Olivelli Italian on The Cut near Southwark/Waterloo. Great spot, lovely food; thoroughly recommended for a nice sit-in Italian meal.

CG: Can we be biased here?! It quite frankly HAS to be Mercato Metropolitano in Elephant & Castle.

If you take an advanced learner loan to fund a Level 3 Access to HE Diploma, and then go on to complete a degree in the same subject, your advanced learner loan will be written off.
