Gifting for good ―

Dulwich-based Micaela Lindsay on her business That Counts

W

hen lockdown struck, Dulwich-based wedding photographer Micaela Lindsay found herself facing months without work. She was keen to send something special to her clients who had been forced to postpone their big day, but struggled to find an affordable gift box that wasn’t filled with unoriginal, mass-produced items. So she set up That Counts, an ‘impactful gifting company’ that sells gift boxes filled with items from independent brands striving to make a difference.

Holly O’Mahony: Tell us a bit about your business, That Counts. What do you do, what inspired you to set it up and what gap in the market does it fill?

Micaela Lindsay: During lockdown, I was looking for gifts to send to my friends and clients whose weddings I’d been due to photograph. I couldn’t find any gift boxes that were design-led and selling products by independent suppliers, while also being affordable and supporting a good cause. So I decided to set up my own version of that.

HOM: In your opinion, what makes a great gift?

ML: A good gift box should delight the person when they open it, and should consist of something tasty, something useful, something just for fun and something that feels like a treat. In my opinion, there should be bonus points if it incorporates some colour coordination.

HOM: What's the best gift you've ever received?

ML: I received a film camera on my 16th birthday. Considering the fact that I’m a wedding photographer, it’s got to be pretty high up on the list!

HOM: You specialise in gift boxes. Tell us about the items you've chosen to fill them with. What makes these items popular with your customers?

ML: Gift-giving is as much about the giver as it is the receiver, so we like to offer gifts that we know will be universally liked, used and appreciated. It means that you don’t have to stress and worry about

whether or not the recipient will like them. Odds are, if they don’t love shortbread, tea or chocolate from Coco – they’ll be able to regift or share those items with someone who does! All of the above feature in our boxes, as does stationery, ceramics, candles from Hobo + co, bath salts and more.

HOM: How do you choose which independent producers to partner with?

ML: We try really hard to prioritise brands that are making a difference, or are small businesses. Working with brands like Nemi Teas that support refugees, Vent for Change that make notebooks from recycled materials or Arthouse Unlimited who employ neurodiverse people with physical support needs means that we’re able to spread the impact of our small business.

HOM: Your boxes promote the idea of gifting beyond standard occasions like birthdays or sending gifts in sympathy. You offer boxes for things like self-care and working from home. How come?

ML: Anyone who has been on the receiving end of a gift when we least expected it knows how wonderful it feels to be thought of and cared for. So we try to make it easy and fun for people to send out gifts that can surprise, boost and uplift their friends and family members who didn’t know they needed it. I like to think that we’re there for the discerning but laidback ‘just because’ gifter, who isn’t interested in sending something that feels tacky or wasteful.

HOM: As an online business, what do you do to stay a part of the Dulwich community you're also a part of?

ML: As a West Dulwich resident who works at Parkhall, I’m surrounded by amazing businesses and entrepreneurs who are always up for a coffee or a walk. Since my home and studio are within 10 minutes of each other, I’ve found myself looking for close and local services to use and support, which has been wonderful.

HOM: You partner with two brilliant charities: one working to end creative poverty and the other supporting refugees. Why have you chosen these charities?

ML: I consider myself a creative entrepreneur and have another career as a wedding photographer.

It’s so sad that creative subjects are continuously underfunded in schools and not considered valid career choices. Make Bank aims to tackle creative poverty by providing art supplies to students who otherwise couldn’t afford them. As a South African citizen, I’ve also been very privileged to build a life here in London, but I know that refugees aren’t afforded the same easy transition and support that I was. So being able to support the work of Refugee Action is something that we are proud to do.

Storming the castle ―

G

et down to Urban Elephant, a free vibrant community arts festival taking over Walworth this month. Taking place across the last weekend of July, the festival will highlight the best in street art and performances from around the world.

Using creative interventions to connect the new and old high streets of the fast-changing area, the animated festival will bring to life the vibrant high streets of Castle Square, Nursery Road Park, Walworth Square, Bagshot Street, Sayer Street, Elephant Park, HEJ, and Elephant Arcade.

Acts to watch out for include internationallyrecognised clown and acrobatic group Ballet Hooligan, who have recently toured Asia-Pacific, Felicity Footlooseaerial circus performers, Mr Bones puppetry and The Tom Show comedy unicycle.

The festivities will kick off at Castle Square

on Friday 29th July, where there will be free children’s art workshops hosted by local community groups. This will be followed by Latin American music and dance programme Serenata Latina, which will perform for the crowds until the evening alongside a DJ. The dance performances will include traditional salsa as well as Yuruparí, originating from the Colombian coffee region.

On Saturday and Sunday (30th and 31st July) guests can expect to see a host of activities in many locations across Elephant and Castle where there will be something for everyone to enjoy, from live music to unicyclists. And if you want to bust a move you can get inspired from a host of different dance performers including Urban, African, Latino, and tap dancing.

Introducing: Woolwich Words and Sounds festival ― Holly O’Mahony

M

ulti-purpose arts venue Woolwich Works has been open less than a year but it has already fulfilled its promise of becoming a melting pot of diverse, world-class culture. Home to The Burnt City, the latest roaming theatrical extravaganza from immersive theatre pioneers Punchdrunk, and The Dreamachine, a unique experience in which small groups are invited to lie back and experience the trippy effects of flashing lights on their closed eyelids, Woolwich Works also offers weekly performances in comedy, spoken word and music. All three art forms are being drawn together for the inaugural Woolwich Words and Sounds festival, running for two weeks this July.

The music…

There’s a heady mix of sounds wafting out of Woolwich Works over the two-week festival. Avant-pop band Penguin Cafe, who built up a following in the '80s and '90s, are performing to celebrate the re-release of their first album A Matter of Life… Audiences can also catch sets from soul singer-songwriter Jake Isaac and jazz virtuoso Rueben James, plus some electronica from Laura Misch. Guest performances come from American jazz star Bob Mintzer, who performs here with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, and DJ Norman Jay MBE, who’s teaming up with Lovers Rock producer Dennis Bovell. Don’t miss Sam Lee and Soumik Datta either as they co-headline the line-up on July 24.

The comedy…

In need of a good laugh? Lightening the mood with their latest gags are Jamali Maddix (Taskmaster, Never Mind the Buzzcocks); Jayde Adams (Snackmasters, Good Omens); Fern Brady (The Russell Howard Hour); Alfie Brown (Imagination); Sindhu Vee (QI, Sex Education), plus more rising stars from the comedy circuit and a yet-to-be-revealed special guest.

Spoken word…

Whether you’re already a spoken word aficionado or a first-timer, listen in as words leap from the page,

acquire new meaning, and ebb and flow into one another in the hands of Sophia Thakur (Superheroes, Somebody Give This Heart a Pen) and Anthony Anaxagorou (After the Formalities, How To...Write It), each of whom is headlining a spoken word night and offering support act spots to rising names in the field.

For families…

Woolwich Words and Sounds is also very much a family affair. In the venue’s Beanfest area, catch a performance of The Adventures of Mangolina ( July 24) written by Malika Booker and developed by kids’ charity Discover Children’s Centre in 2021. The 25-minute adventure is a chance to head to the carnival with a host of colourful characters.

Also not to be missed is Lizzie Corscaden’s All Aboard ( July 30), a Woolwich-specific play about a non-binary sailor, navigating their way through life on a ship.

Completing the festival vibes at Woolwich Words and Sounds will be street food stalls dishing up flavours from around the world, plus an all-important bar pouring measures of the good stuff.

James Heaton, CEO of Woolwich Works, said: “Woolwich Works naturally lends itself to festival-style programming with so many great spaces of all sorts of different shapes and sizes.

Sheep herding, daredevil stunts and live music: Lambeth Country Show returns for 2022 ―

orn between a trip to the farm and a music festival? You’ll find the best of both at the annual Lambeth Country Show, which returns to Brockwell Park with its 48th edition – and for the first time since the pandemic. Running for one weekend only, on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 July, the Show is expected to see around 120,000 visitors flock to the park. Unlike the majority of London’s summer festivals, it’s free to enter, though you’ll want to bring a bit of pocket money to make the most of its attractions, street food stalls and real cider tent.

Highlights typically include the Dog and Sheep Show, where sheep dogs show off their herding skills, and the Adrenaline Tour for daredevil motorcycle stunts. This is not your typical village green affair though; a stage hosting an eclectic music lineup spanning dub, Afro-beat, disco, jazz, folk, ska and soul lend the festival a uniquely London edge.

A true family festival, there's plenty for little ones too, from face-painting, bouncy castles and fairground rides to animal-petting courtesy of a flock of fluffies from Vauxhall City Farm.

For music lovers, a highlight is the eclectic, genre-defying mix of acts on the main stage, which is produced by Cultural Promotions and platforms local talent as well as international acts.

BRIXTON MEETS HARLEM BRIXTON BID

This Summer Brixton will host the first Brixton X Harlem Festival. Taking place from 3 – 7 August 2022, a series of events, installations, film screenings and music performances.

Inspired by the common threads between the two communities, Brixton BID and Harlem’s 125th Street Business Improvement District twinned in June 2021, since their announcement they have been working on a number of shared

ideas and initiatives; the festival will bring the place values of both areas to life in Brixton.

The twinning has resulted in new relationships, local business Brixton Brewery has twinned with Harlem Brewing Co. to brew Common Threads, a limited-edition beer to celebrate the inaugural Brixton X Harlem Festival.

“We’re collaborating together on design and recipe in a way that perfectly expresses the coming together of two historic neighbourhoods in world cities to create something new and exciting for the festival goers to enjoy.”

The recipe is a wheat beer and will be brewed in Brixton and New York using locally inspired ingredients. Brixton’s brew will be launched at The Brixton Brewery Taproom along with special guest Celeste Beatty, Head Brewer from

Harlem. They will also release a fun feature where drinkers in Brixton and Harlem will be able to buy each other a pint across the pond.

The festival will also have a speciality cocktail ‘The Harlem in Brixton’. Market Row Rum are creating a great drink with a great story. “The Harlem in Brixton” is an amalgamation of the classic cocktail “The Harlem” and Market Row’s signature drink - “The Brixton Daiquiri.” ”The Harlem is a classic from the early 20th century, supposedly created at the World-Famous Cotton Club located at 142nd Street & Lenox Avenue in the Harlem neighbourhood. We loved the idea of modernising a New York classic by adding the flavours of Brixton’s incredible Market” said Mikey Hirsch, Brand Ambassador.

Brixton’s own Market Row Botanical Rum, (for those of you who have yet to experience the award-winning Market Row, it is a re-distillation of high-end Caribbean rums with their unique collection of botanicals) and combine it with pineapple and maraschino liqueur (both used in the Harlem), with an added twist of freshly made hibiscus syrup. Q&A WITH NICKY EZER, PRODUCER FOR LAMBETH COUNTRY SHOW’S MAIN STAGE — South Londoner: You’re responsible for curating the main stage lineup for the festival. How are you feeling about setting the tone for the first Lambeth Country Show in three years?

Nicky Ezer: Culture Promotions has been producing and curating the Lambeth Country Show main stage for over 15 years. It's one of my annual highlights, bringing live music to the community at no charge in the beauty of Brockwell Park in Brixton.

SL: With its eclectic mix of farm animals, real cider stands, science demonstrations and performances from contemporary music groups, Lambeth Country Show is pretty unique and very south London. And, like you said, it's free to enter, which is such a rarity these days. It’s pretty special, isn’t it?

NE: That’s right. The show offers something for everybody and not only that, it offers an opportunity for so many people to engage and be

part of something amazing. It's entertaining, social, interesting, educational, and above all brings people together of all ages and cultures. It is the highlight of so many local people's year and now, post pandemic, will be even more important as it's a chance to celebrate the return of live entertainment.

SL: How did you go about curating the lineup for the main stage, which incorporates performances in reggae, soul, jazz and more?

NE: Every year it brings me joy sifting through so much local talent as well as national and international acts, to bring a lineup that reflects the legacy of music as well as new sounds. We want to curate a lineup that exposes local talent and celebrates Lambeth people and their creativity, as well as also bringing veteran acts that are well known and loved.

SL: Which acts are you most excited to see play, or

most excited for audiences to discover?

NE: On Saturday, I am especially looking forward to Floetic Lara Lee's set. She is an amazing talent, and has mesmerising vocals and stage presence. I also can't wait to dance to the old school sounds of Heatwave headlining day one with hits like ‘Boogie Nights’. Reggae all day on Sunday will also be a treat. It's Roots day and the act to watch for is the Empresses of Roots Soul and Reggae with Teshay Makeda at the helm alongside Aysha Loren and Dionne Reid – a trio of powerful female voices. But Cleveland Watkiss MBE singing his Jamaican hits songbook alongside the legendary Horace Andy rounding off the weekend will make Lambeth Country Show 2022 a historic musical occasion.

Queercircle: LGBTQ+ arts charity opens permanent site on Greenwich Peninsula ―

There’s still a lot of things we need to do to support LGBTQ+ people,” says Ashley Joiner, founder and director of Queercircle, an LGBTQ+ led charity working in the arts and culture sector. “There’s been cuts to arts education, cuts to mental health services, trans people are under attack from the media and government, and there’s lots of external things we need to tackle.” Formed six years ago as a grassroots response to the mass closures of dedicated LGBTQ+ spaces in London – a depressing 60% of which are now shuttered – the charity has until now held events at rented spaces across the city, but this month, Queercircle opened the doors to its first permanent home in the Design District on Greenwich Peninsula.

Designed by David Kohn Architects, the Queercircle hub is divided into a main gallery, reading room and project space. It’ll programme three seasons a year, each comprising an exhibition by an LGBTQ+ contemporary artist (held in the main gallery), an archive exhibition (in the reading room) and a participatory residency (in the project space).

“Queercircle will be a hub that facilitates other people’s initiatives while always having a central programme to drive it forward,” explains Ashley. “It’s all free to access. People can rent out the project space for meetings or workshops, or you can come and chill here.”

Every year, a different overarching theme will steer the exhibitions on show, which this year is ecology. If this sounds like a left-field choice for the LGBTQ+ space, then think about the concept’s roots in the

Greek word ‘oikos’, meaning ‘household’ or ‘dwelling place’. Ashley was keen for his first resident artists to create works that were inviting and welcoming of the community, while also delving into concerns for the natural world.

Michaela Yearwood-Dan’s inaugural exhibition in the main gallery, Let Me Hold You, ticks both boxes.

The London-based painter has created a freestanding curved mural installation, with colourful, botanicalinspired motifs and a message of love and acceptance scrawled across the base. The installation, which Ashley describes as giving visitors “a giant hug”, represents Michaela’s defiance of binary notions of racial or gendered identity.

In the neighbouring reading room, the first archive exhibition The Queens’ Jubilee commemorates the 50th anniversary of the radical drag queens of the Gay Liberation Front, who marched through central London in 1972 for the first ever Pride in the UK. The exhibition features photos from the march, diary entries and news cuttings, and has been curated with the help of Gay Liberation Front activist Stuart Feather.

“Stuart was one of the original founders of the Gay Liberation Front in 1971, so it’s a mixture from his own personal archive, texts from the period and some photos taken by the people as well,” explains Frances Williams, a self-described “historical exhibit” who founded the UK’s first national lesbian publication DIVA Magazine in 1994, and joins Queercircle as Learning and Participation Manager. “It gives a really evocative feel of

that time. It’s been nice to share inspiration from what people did in the past to use in the future. We might need it!”

Visitors to the reading room can also educate themselves on LGBTQ+ history, poring through a wall of books on the topic.

Upstairs, a room dressed with sociably-arranged tables and chairs, and big white boards, looks poised to welcome its future collaborations – up to 30 at any one time. This is where Queercircle’s participatory residencies will happen. At the time of writing, the first season is still being finalised, but Frances promises an exciting line-up including poetry workshops, talks and family events. All will be ticketed but free to access. The programme will work to promote LGBTQ+ visibility and expand access to the arts.

In between the three annual seasons, Ashley is keen to open up the Queercircle space to external LGBTQ+ organisations as a way of tackling the dwindling number of dedicated spaces available to the community.

Month-long ‘catalyst’ periods will offer these groups a platform to develop their own initiatives plus the support they need to get their work off the ground.

“We don’t want to be dictating what queerness is from the top down, so for a month in between each season we hand over the main gallery to another organisation,” Ashley explains. First up is the Queer Youth Art Network, made up of LGBTQ+ people aged 18-26 with an interest in the arts. “We provide whatever help they need, be it marketing, or accounts,

so it’ll change from organisation to organisation,” says Ashley. “We recognise the value in having secured this space, and we want to share it and pay it forward wherever we can.”

A family day is earmarked for the near future too, and Ashley has big ambitions to run a service similar to Radical Monarchs in the US, which is similar to the Girl Scouts, “but instead of teaching them how to bake cakes, it teaches them about racism [and] being in a community”.

A further health and wellbeing programme will work to tackle social isolation through offering community sessions rooted in confidence building.

Ashley’s main goal with Queercircle is to build long-term programmes for long-term change and to offer LGBTQ+ artists a home they can keep coming back to. “Now that we have a space that is dedicated to LGBTQ+ people, there is no need to have a pop-up mentality,” says Ashley, with a look of hard-earned assurance. “The idea is that these are ongoing initiatives; people can keep coming back and we’ll always be here.

This is our space now and we’ll continue to build and build and build.”

Charity giving bikes to refugees opens shop in Camberwell

T

he Bike Project is a charity built on a touching story. When founder and CEO Jem Stein was at university, he was a volunteer mentor paired with Adam, a young Darfuri refugee. Adam struggled to make the meetings, often having to choose between catching the bus or eating a decent meal. So Jem refurbished his brother’s old bike and gave it to Adam as a way of accessing his education, healthcare and psychological support – for free. For Jem, a spark was lit and he left university with a mission to provide more refugees with bikes.

In 2013, he founded The Bike Project Charity, refurbishing unwanted bikes and donating them to refugees and asylum seekers of all ages in the UK. Nine years later and the charity is on track to donate its 10,000th bike this summer.

The charity runs community engagement programmes too, including Pedal Power: a free cycling programme for refugee women, taught by qualified refugee women. There’s also Bike Buddies, a programme that pairs bike recipients with nearby volunteer cyclists to help improve their confidence on the roads, and Cyber Cyclists, weekly Zoom sessions offering a sense of community and activities including cycle safety lessons. Young refugees can also take advantage of a Social Action programme which helps prepare them for the job market.

Headquartered in Brixton, the charity has until now operated services out of its workshop in Deptford, but earlier this month on June 11, it opened the doors to a new bike shop in Camberwell. Here, the public can buy refurbished bikes, clothing and cycling accessories, and make the most of bike servicing and repairs, with proceeds raised pumped back into the charity.

Holly O’Mahony: The Bike Project has just opened a new bike shop in Camberwell where the public can donate, shop for or fix their bikes, with all proceeds going towards the charity. How does it work?

CH: We accept adult and kids’ bikes, even if they need a bit of TLC. Unfortunately we don’t take bike parts or accessories. People can find their nearest drop-off point on our website.

Charlotte Hu: When someone donates an old bike, if its resale value is deemed high enough after our team refurbishes it, we will sell it in our bike shop (instead of donating it) as the proceeds will be able to help multiple refugees. In addition to our online services, customers can now browse our bikes and accessories in store without an appointment, or book a bike servicing session for maintenance and repairs.

HOM: To date, The Bike Project has been able to give nearly 10,000 bikes to refugees. Is there a big waiting list?

HOM: What made you choose Camberwell to open your first bike shop?

CH: Southwark is quite a cycle-friendly borough with good transport links, and Camberwell is conveniently located between our workshop in Deptford and our headquarters in Brixton.

HOM: What support are you looking for from the public to continue doing the work you do?

CH: Our current waiting list is 170 refugees and asylum seekers, who live in London or Birmingham.

We always need more bikes to refurbish! However, if people don’t have a bike to donate but would still like to support the charity, they could host a pop-up to collect bikes from their local community, volunteer with us, fundraise, become a Bike Buddy through our refugee befriending programme, or become a regular giver.

HOM: How do refugees and those in need of The Bike Project’s services find you?

CH: Refugees and asylum seekers find us through referral partners. We work with about 20 charity partners including Care4Calais, Refugee Action and British Red Cross, who refer people to us each week.

HOM: How is the work you're doing currently being funded?

CH: We’re very lucky to have passionate fundraisers.

Last year, 539 people took on our Refugee Routes cycling challenge (check the website for details) and raised £115k by collectively cycling 139k miles. We also have some wonderful corporate partners such as Bolt and SunGod, and support from organisations including Comic Relief.

HOM: With the shop now open, what’s next for The Bike Project Charity?

Elephant and Castle locals are welcoming the arrival of Rarebit, a kitchen, upscale wine bar and grocery store, which launched on the new Sayer Street development in June.

Rarebit lands amid the new shopping destination and residential hub, and is the latest venture from co-founder of Clapham’s The Rookery, Mark Angell, and Will Nias.

The all-day kitchen, bar and restaurant, which seats 55 people inside and 16 on the terrace, serves modern British cuisine, under the helm of British Caribbean head chef Liv Lionel of Brighton’s Lazy Fin and The Prince George. Rarebit is also stocking local producers, including bread and pastries from Flor, cheese from Neal’s Yard Dairy, rare-breed meats from London Smoke & Cure in The Butchery and Coffee from Climpson & Sons.

The team behind beloved pizzeria Made of Dough are launching Palazzo in Crystal Palace, taking over the former site of Church Grill. The all-day Italian bar and restaurant is dishing up staples including pizza, zucchini fritti, pork and veal meatballs, anchovy bread, and chicken Milanese.

Palazzo is pairing its late-night weekend licence with a record library and live DJs; there’s also a separate bar and a terrace opening for the summer.

Mambow No. 2 ―

Michelin-trained chef Abby Lee brings modern Malaysian cuisine to Peckham

I

n some ways, young Malaysian chef Abby Lee had the worst possible luck. She opened Mambow, her first solo venture, in early 2020 and, well, everyone knows what happened next. But with the doors to her Commercial Street restaurant firmly shuttered while London, like much of the world, ground to a halt, the Michelin-trained chef began to wonder whether the Asian bowl food-focused restaurant she’d launched was really the right concept for her.

With some soul searching to do, Abby booked a flight to Singapore as soon as the world reopened its borders, where she spent time with her aunt and grandma, relearning the recipes that had shaped her first understanding of food. On returning to London, she felt ready to relaunch Mambow, but this time, with dishes more personal to her roots. The resulting menu shines a light on Nyonya cuisine, which blends Chinese ingredients with Indo-Malay flavours, and fuses traditional curries with her own signature contemporary dishes.

Ditching central London for SE15, Abby has opened Mambow take two in Peckham’s Market Stalls – and she’s enjoying running a business somewhere with more of a sense of community.

The new site is sandwiched between basement club Peckham Audio and rooftop bar Forza Wine.

The South Londoner sat down with Abby Lee to find out more…

Holly O’Mahony: Firstly, how are you feeling about relaunching Mambow, this time in Peckham, following its brief stint in Spitalfields in the run up to the pandemic?

Abby Lee: I’m feeling excited about this launch compared to the first, as this concept is much closer to my heart than the last concept. I’m also feeling reenergised after a long break from the restaurant world because of the pandemic.

HOM: While the name is the same, you've changed

the menu quite a bit since the original opening, making it more personal to the cuisine you grew up around. What led you to do this following the lockdown?

AL: Ha, yes I wonder what they’d make of those dishes. They haven’t tried them yet. They may be sceptical, but I would hope to win them over.

HOM: What are some of your earliest memories of food?

AL: During the lockdown, I came to the realisation that I've always been cooking European food and I yearn to eat the food from my homeland now. When lockdown and quarantine restrictions were dropped, I took a trip to Singapore to see my aunt and we talked through everything my granny had taught her about cooking. During my stay there, I realised my true mission was to showcase this cuisine.

AL: Eating Kampua noodles in Sibu, Sarawak where my dad is from. In my opinion, they beat wonton noodles any day.

HOM: How did you get into cooking and what led you to pursue a career as a chef?

HOM: Why was it important to you to curate a new menu featuring both traditional and contemporary dishes?

AL: Cooking was the best way I found to channel my creativity whilst also helping me to ease my anxiety.

I grew up in my aunt’s bakeries in Singapore and unknowingly absorbed the need to pursue a life in food.

AL: To make something exciting in this day and age, you need to be always thinking of new ideas and looking forward. However, my main mission is still to preserve these traditions and recipes – and bring them to the people of London.

HOM: Your career has come a long way since then.

You’ve cooked in the Michelin-starred kitchens of Le Cordon Bleu in London and Pashà Ristorante in Bari, Italy. What are you bringing from those experiences to your own restaurant?

HOM: It's hard to imagine an older generation tucking into your trendy-sounding Hainanese chicken sando or the M Wing (a deep-fried chicken wing tossed in an anchovy sambal and served with lime). Did you try out these recipes on your aunt and granny before you left?

AL: Chiefly an attention to detail and knowledge of how to bring the most out of an ingredient.

HOM: How have you found swapping the traditional, bricks-and-mortar restaurant setting for a market stall?

AL: It has been difficult to understand how to best use a much smaller space efficiently and how to run service in such a small setting, but I’ve been loving the challenge. The benefits definitely outweigh the negatives, though, as here you get to be part of a community, sharing the space with likeminded people and all supporting each other. I also love the openness of it as there is so much interaction with your customers.

HOM: Similarly, how have you found swapping the more central location of Spitalfields for Peckham?

AL: Spitalfields had quite a commercial feel to it, whereas in Peckham there is much more of a community vibe. So far, our visitors have been so welcoming and keen to talk about the cuisine.

HOM: Finally, which dish should everyone try to get an understanding of your cooking?

AL: I’d have to say Ikan Assam Pedas, which is a typical Malay sour fish curry with okra, aubergine, sour tamarind and a fiery spice mix of chilli, belacan, lemongrass and galangal.

Self-love is a destination, not a journey Forest Hill love psychologist Nancy Elliot on venturing into the internal

A

significant component of self-love is to frequently embark on emotional journeys within ourselves with the goal of reaching a specific destination. We want to live lives that are peaceful and content, filled with hope and possibility.

Yet with all the challenges we face on a daily basis, how do we accomplish and sustain positive states of mind? Consider the internal journeys we make from, say, fear to courage, anger to calmness, sadness to joy, despair to acceptance, or from holding on to letting go.

These are just a few. Our internal journeys embody a shift from one side of ourselves to the other. As we begin this shifting process, we must move as quickly as possible to the destination of wellbeing and balance and away from confusion, depression and feelings of stuck-ness. Life is hard. We will be required to manage many complex emotions. Like alchemists, it is our responsibility to turn painful things into bearable peaceful things.

The idea that life is all about the journey and NOT the destination (a famous quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson) is one of the most commonly held ‘myths’ circulated worldwide by gurus and wellbeing experts alike; it is misleading at best and dangerous at worst. Especially in the world of mental health. This nebulous ‘myth’ has become deeply embedded within the psychology of mindfulness and wellbeing dogma everywhere. Unfortunately, such rhetoric has galvanised ‘experts’ into taking a myopic view on what tools are critical for cultivating self-love, personal power and a sound mind.

Self-love demands that we keep ourselves on an upward trajectory; it is the very nature of love to flow, adapt, lift, nourish, and soothe. Self-love is the force that facilitates recovery from so many of our human ailments, broken hearts, loss of loved ones and many other setbacks that are part of this incredible and challenging life. When we can learn how to generate self love from within ourselves, it will help us move out of depression, pessimism, and low moods; instead, filling us up with a gentle, determined spirit in pursuit of joy, peace and

happiness.

Obviously, the journey bit is essential too. In fact, it is vital. But we can only truly reflect on our emotional journeys once we have reached the desired destination.

Think back to the ex-boyfriend or the failed business.

How much was learned while you were actually in the moment, perhaps hoping he would change or that the business would pick up again? Ever noticed that it is only once you have healed/recovered and somewhat moved on from the more powerful emotions of those experiences, once you reached a safer destination, that you can genuinely reflect on the fullness of what the experience meant to you, what it taught you, and how it shaped you. It seems reaching your destination is necessary to understanding your journey.

Reflection and/or analysis require perspective, and perspective requires distance. But healing and wellbeing require connection, not distance. When making emotional shifts, we need to be connected to ourselves to have a strong enough ego to pull us through to the other side. To get us to our destination, which is out of negative emotional states and into positive ones.

This is not advocating toxic positivity nor is it a suggesting that you attempt to bypass negative emotions that need your attention. It is about being committed to your own contentment and well-being, not taking life too seriously and being vigilant about moving into positive states, without ignoring the lessons or communications that lie beneath our negative feelings. I’m just saying, we love, we work, we love and we learn, we gotta keep it moving.

Reaching a desired positive emotional destination or dwelling in the journey is the distinction between ordinary suffering and suffering that has become stuck or pathological. We have to be careful NOT to get stuck in the journey phase of our… journey. We want to avoid descending into more profound suffering, depressive states and/or low moods that may become more difficult to move out of overtime. Haven’t you heard the saying: “when you are going through hell, don’t stop to

take pictures!” If we genuinely want to heal, let go of something or someone, find acceptance or recovery from loss, let us not hang about in pain. Instead, we can choose self love and adopt a solid and determined spirit to reach our destination, out of discomfort and into peace. To this end, we will not be deterred.

Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me.

Psalm 23 Grief is not a disease but some people become ill from grief. Freud was one of the first to attempt to understand why. In his paper ‘Mourning and Melancholia,’ he discusses the internal work the patient must do to overcome their grief.

I believe this internal work refers to moving out of the journey into the destination. Those of us who become ill from life’s disappointments may do so because we get stuck in the journey phase, not pushing through diligently to reach a happier destination.

As an accredited Psychotherapist and Coach in Private Practice, my specialisation is working with women. I love my job. Day in, day out, I watch my clients sit opposite me, overcome with despair. They are stuck in the journey part of the process. Stuck wondering why the relationship didn’t work or why they can’t seem to hang on to any personal power or stand up to their parents or believe they are worthy of love. Action is required here.

We do not feed our problems with our thoughts and attention, rather we starve them with action.

Many of my clients have a core belief, whether conscious or unconscious, that their pain and discomfort are part of the journey and somehow are a normal rite of passage. There is no real value in dwelling in our suffering. We need to take ‘inner’ action every day to move out of negative emotions as swiftly as we can.

Clients often ask me what tools they will need to become more adept at making these quantum leaps over the journey part of the process and into the destination we seek. For each person, it is different.

For me, it is prayer, writing, singing and getting still

that eventually shift me out of an unwanted state into a more desired place. For others it is dancing or exercise.

Some need a few days in nature or a family trip. Some bake, others have a good cry. More long term, it can take one to hit a rock bottom to make that journey to more positive mindset, becoming sick and tired of being sick and tired.

Either way, if we can love ourselves enough to forge through the journey of bad feelings and reach our destination of feeling good we’d be better off. Much like daily exercise, keeping your ‘journey to destination’ process expeditious and dynamic is a sign of good emotional fitness. Try to become conscious of what helps you shift from negative to positive states and keep doing that!

South East London local Rachel Steed-Middleton’s “pretty useful” String Ting business was born during the first wave of the pandemic as a one-off fundraising initiative for frontline workers.

Comprised mainly of colourful cool phone wristlets and cross-body straps, each piece is beaded by hand and adds an exuberant touch to selfies while offering a cute to way go hands-free.

In the span of a few months, Rachel created an independent business, building a team of makers based in South East London who assemble every piece with care. Beads in acrylic, glass and resin are strung on resistant satin cord, resulting in happiness-inducing designs that hold up to daily use.
