EUROVISION LIVE SCREENING AND AFTER PARTY The Royal Vauxhall Tavern and Eurofest are teaming up for a live screening of this year’s Eurovision Song Contest grand final from Turin. Following the success of last year’s screening - the first time that the RVT had shown the contest live - which sold out in minutes and was a great party, the RVT have decided to do it all again! After the dreaded “nil points” last year, the UK has chosen a top song this year with Sam Ryder’s Space Man. So whether you’re cheering on Sam, going bananas for Norway, or have hope for Estonia, the RVT is the place to be on Eurovision night. Once the show is over Eurofest DJs Don Grant and John Hagley will be playing the best Eurovision and Europop hits and remixes through until 4am.

Peckham’s Multi-Story Orchestra, which performs in the Bold Tendencies car park, is warming up for its boldest and most creative summer season yet. The Volcano ( June 9 and 10) is inspired by music by Tan Dun and Philip Glass and features bold new music created by percussionists with amazing young drummers from Peckham.

Big Summer Concert ( June 23 and 24) is the Orchestra’s biggest concert of the summer where they combine orchestral musicians with young artists from Peckham for a celebration of baroque orchestral music, while The Endz ( July 7 and 8) is a powerful modern day story of friendship triumphing over heartbreak and loss - a unique tale told through spoken word, song, rap, accompanied by the Orchestra. The season culminates with Awake! (August 6 and 7) an annual tradition that sees the group perform all around the top four levels of the Bold Tendencies' car park space while audiences wander around at their own pace. New music has been specially created for this event.

SECRET WINDOW For its spring season, the Dulwich Picture Gallery presents Reframed: The Woman in the Window, the first exhibition to explore the enigmatic motif of the ‘woman in the window’. A Q&A with Deptford based trans/ non binary performance artist Joseph Morgan Schofield, who curates this year’s Futureritual at the Institute of Contemporary Arts ―

It’s kind of exhausting. While there is growing visibility and understanding of trans* identity within our culture, healthcare is a disaster, with many people in the community waiting for years to receive help, and there is a lot of hostile rhetoric and action in the media and in the Government. It’s terrifying to see our lives and experiences used as a tool to create fear and division. In the face of this, community is everything – initiatives like We Exist, which operates between art, mutual-aid and healthcare, are vital. Possibly, this is another reason I am drawn to ritual – it provides a space to meditate, mourn, dream and process. Right now, I’m really hungry to witness more work that does this, that holds space for the imaginative and emotional processes of the audience.

What can people expect from Futureritual, the performance art season you’re curating at the ICA? Ritual offers a sense of belonging, a place to process, meditate, a way to mark the passage of time. Even in a nominally secular society such as ours, these are things we very much need. I’m interested in how performance operates as contemporary ritual. The ICA season involves four new performances by Rubiane Maia, Soojin Chang, Benjamin Sebastian and myself, a workshop exploring queer kinship, and a three-part podcast exploring the project themes. The works explore memory, power, grief, sex, ecology, survival. In different ways, they transgress invisibility, acceptability, violence, gender and desire. Our approaches are very different. Each performance will be a unique experience for the audience, inviting you to reflect on your own beliefs, experiences and relationships.

I grew up just north of Manchester, and the South West Pennines, which were my childhood horizon, are a major influence in my work. I now live in Forest Hill and get a lot of sustenance from Sydenham Hill Woods. My studio VSSL is in Deptford and we host a lot of performance there, in a relaxed way. VSSL is next to some galleries – Castor, Xxiraja Hii, Indigo+Madder, and South Parade. They’re all really active and always have great shows. Black Voices: Celebrating Aretha Franklin

Brixton House Choir Learn to sing different musical styles from Gospel to Reggae at the Brixton House Choir. Guests for this season are Kevin Mark Trail, a UK singer, songwriter and producer with world critical acclaim. He has had solo releases with EMI records and Warner Records. And Rachel Huggins, a singer and songwriter who specialises in gospel, soul and jazz. She has been a two-time finalist on BBC’s Gospel Choir of the Year.

Brixton’s newest theatre (formerly the Ovalhouse) opened its doors earlier this year and has a jam-packed season of live performances and workshops for the coming months.

Nearly 20 per cent of Londoners could be benefiting from a spacious, fast, and airy river commute

lthough they may not know it, over 1.6 million Londoners live within a 15-minute bike ride of an Uber Boat by Thames Clippers pier (www. uberboatbythamesclippers.com). The London borough with the highest number of potential commuters living in accessible distance to the piers is the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, which has 279,437 of its population living within 15 minutes’ cycle of an Uber Boat by Thames Clippers

pier. Southwark boasts 182,831 potential commuters, over 57 per cent of the Borough’s total population. Meanwhile over 120,000 people in Lambeth could also cycle and sail to work with ease. Spring is the perfect time to discover this new commute; it promises fresh air at every step of the journey. An early morning cycle or stroll makes for an excellent beginning to the day and is a great source of exercise – enjoy a treat from the onboard café bar without the guilt. A Q&A with chef and TV food presenter Matt Tebbutt ― By Laura Burgoine

he UK’s biggest celebration of food and music returns to Dulwich Park this summer. Matt Tebbutt joins James Martin, Andi Oliver and Grace Dent for Pub in the Park, a dizzying combination of award-winning restaurants, banging live music, incredible chefs, and great food. Matt chats to the South Londoner ahead of the festival. What can people expect from this year’s Pub in the Park? Is Dulwich an area you get to visit very often? Do you have any favourite restaurants there? Pub in the Park Dulwich is going to be great! People can expect delicious food from pubs and restaurants like Kerridge’s Bar and Grill, Angela Hartnett’s Café Murano, Atul Kochhar Restaurants and more, as well as some top music from the likes of Craig David, Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Faithless. Unfortunately I don’t get to Dulwich very often but it’s a lovely part of London…there’s loads going on and plenty of good places to eat. Franklins and Llewellyn have great menus.

Lots of irreverent fun! Plus all the great guest chefs, top bands and amazing food. It’s not one to miss!

I’m excited that Food Unwrapped is coming back for another series and I’m also busy setting up a small cookery school in Wales.

Why do food and music complement each other so well? Do you play music while you cook? Of course! It’s the perfect way to relax… Music, food and booze are what life is all about. You spend more time in front of the camera these days - what’s your favourite thing about presenting/cooking on TV? The spontaneity and unpredictable nature of live TV means it’s quite an adrenaline rush when things go well. It’s as much fun as a busy kitchen service. Less sweaty and hectic but just as fun and demanding.

Visits from Gordon Ramsay, Simon Hopkinson, Yotam Ottolenghi among others. The Abergavenny food festival weekends were always a riot of late nights, too much drink and great company from visiting chefs. Tom Parker Bowles helping with clearing plates from the restaurant… Mark Hix and Mitch Tonks demanding endless white truffle pizza etc

For the love of Pod Within the warm glow of a purple cocoon in Dulwich, an immersive and otherworldly experience awaits. Hotpod yoga, which opened in Dulwich in 2019, sees yogis enter a tent-like ‘pod’ combining dark lights, heady aromas and mesmerising soundscapes. If you’ve never tried yoga, this variety is an ideal entrypoint, says owner and teacher Lindsey Huebner. The practice can be whatever you want it to be: workout, moving meditation, spiritual practice or just an hour of solace from the hustle and bustle of daily life. “I love the heat because it gives you a lot of ease in the practise,” Lindsey tells the South Londoner. “You get more flexibility for free and that can be a good way of getting into yoga in the first place. The founders are two guys who didn’t get the appeal of yoga at all and they were quite stiff so physically yoga was so challenging for them that they didn’t get the mental benefits because it was such a strain. But then they went to a hot class and they were able to get the physical warming benefits with no excess strain and actually enjoy the practice.” Hotpod has studios all over the world, and over 40 locations in the UK alone. Pods fit 20 people and are heated to 37 degrees, which is considered a middle range. “I did my yoga teaching training in India where every class was essentially a hot yoga class because we’d be sweating away,” Lindsey says. “When I came back to the UK, I practised at Hotpod as a student in Brixton and Dublin, and Dulwich is the first studio I actually taught at.” The pandemic and subsequent lockdowns brought about soul searching both in the personal and business sense for the Canadian native and she took the plunge and became a studio franchisee. Lindsey describes yoga as a “vast practice.” “It’s not a workout. It’s really good for the mind and body.” The signature heated purple pods are a far cry from the mirrors and florescent lighting that can be found in traditional gym environments. “It’s an immersive experience,” she says. “We have great teachers, it’s a welcoming atmosphere for all experience levels and abilities - there’s no contortion contests - and then

when you’re zipped into this space, it takes on an otherworldly feel. It becomes more insular and you have an hour to do something just for you. Your phone isn’t even in the room. There’s something really special about having a tune-out moment like that.” Hotpod Dulwich offers three different class styles. Hotpod flow: A vinyasa flow style structure of fluid movements, a punchier first half with strengthening postures and a second half focused on balancing and stretching. Nurturing flow: At the opposite end of spectrum, in this class you just chill the whole way through. It’s a slower pace, you hold stretches for longer and it’s really beneficial for clearing the mind. Foundation flow: A brand new addition, following the same structure as Hot Pod Flow but it breaks down movements a bit more, allows more time with each posture and is more like a moving meditation. London’s first blended co-working and childcare space celebrates its first birthday ― By Laura Burgoine

est Dulwich’s Peace and Riot is the first of its kind: a workspace with childcare, kitchen and bar - all in one place. The shared work and play space works on an ad-hoc credits system where 1 credit gives you 30 minutes of childcare; children play at play stations spaced throughout the rooms, while adults work at generous handmade desks enjoying – finally - a hot cup of coffee. Designed in Scandiindustrial style, Peace and Riot is packed with modern, educational, and sensory toys, sitting beside an outside garden and onsite kitchen serving healthy meals. Founder Caroline Newte Hardie, 41, who has a background in education, created the business after having two children of her own and experiencing first-hand the difficulties working parents face with childcare costs. “Of the percentage of men and women who reduce their work hours when they become parents, only 21 percent are able to keep their reduced hours salaried, resulting in a death spiral of parental income,” Caroline, who has a 6-year-old and a 4-year-old child, says. “After my first child, I went part-time and I felt guilty when I was working and not with my child but equally when I was with my child I felt like I should be working. Then just before I had my second, I was made redundant. I just felt that there had to be another way.” Peace + Riot became that brand new way of doing

things. The UK has the third highest rates for childcare in Europe. On average, sending a child to nursery 5 days a week costs parents around £1200-£1600 a month. Caroline designed Peace and Riot to be affordable. A monthly membership on the highest usage tier for two children provides families with 50 hours of childcare a month for just £199.95 a month (for up to 3.5 hours per day) and works out at just £1 per child, per 30 minutes. A monthly membership, which allows 8 hours a month, charges credits at just £2.50 and it’s still only £3.95 for 30 minutes for non-members. “It’s never going to replace a nanny or nursery fulltime but you can reduce your dependency on full time traditional childcare and hugely reduce your costs and get to see your children a bit more too,” Caroline says. For Freelancers, Part Time, Remote or Condensed week workers Peace and Riot offers a cost-effective alternative to traditional childcare options. On this, Caroline says “say you’re working from home, deadlines and workloads creep into your days off or you simply need a change of scenery in order to get the job at hand done; you can’t just appear at your nursery’s door and ask them to squeeze your kids in. Your only option -if you don’t have family support around the corner - is to continue to press on alone or take your child to a creche. You find yourself plonking them with someone you - and they - don’t know, go

off feeling guilty, then use up valuable time (it’s £30 for 2 hours at a creche!) trying to find a café to work in only to find you spend the entire time feeling terribly guilty and distracted whilst you nurse a cup of coffee, only to head off after an hour to pick up your child. “I don’t necessarily want to be separated from my child when I’m working either – I wanted to find a way for the two aspects of my life to co-exist instead of to constantly compete. Our Peace Keepers are the answer to that. The ratio is 1 Peacekeeper to 3 children which follows the NSPCC guidelines. Children are happily immersed playing with carefully selected toys to suit most children between newborn and 10-yearsold. On top of that we have the front of house staff who love kids and can’t wait to help. They’re all led by Ellen who’s a force of nature and as a mother herself is great at pre-empting parents’ needs. It just really has a village feel. We’re on your side.” The space itself is calm and quiet, you only need to check out the reels on their Instagram for confirmation. “People are often amazed at how tranquil it feels. We always think it’s the kids that make the racket but grown-ups are the loud ones. A room full of engaged and cared for children are calm because their needs are being met!” The design is Scandinavian “so it looks grown up,” Caroline says. “The coffee’s great, the food’s healthy and plant focused as much as possible; we’ve got

a vegetarian and vegan menu and it’s all very eco focused. Peace + Riot members even get money off with eco toy library Whirli.” The format seems to work with the most regular members averaging a visit every day to carry out 2-3 hours of work, having lunch with their child and taking the chance to chat and decompress. From there members will take their child home for a nap and get on with more work. Caroline adds “they’ve absolutely maximised how much work they can get done in the day but in a much healthier way for their mental health.” Parents enjoy the communal nature of the integrated childcare and co-working space and the change of scenery from working from home. After opening in June last year, it’s quickly become a destination venue with members coming from all over London: Camden, Kentish Town, Deptford, Lewisham, Balham, Crystal Palace, Croydon, Peckham, and Norwood. For the first time ever, you can climb Greenwich’s Cutty Sark ― By Michael Holland

never thought I would ever find myself climbing up the side of the Cutty Sark - or up the side of anything to be honest at this point of my life - but now that the famous clipper has opened its rigging for potential sailors to ascend, I was up there like Jack Sparrow being chased by Captain Barbossa and his crew of skeletons. This is the first time that this experience has been offered at the Cutty Sark (named after a witch who was very fast at catching her prey) and it was an offer I couldn’t refuse. My first job was to prepare for the climb. I knew I wasn’t scared of heights, which is a necessary fear factor to overcome before attempting this task. I did, though, need to ensure that I didn’t get halfway up and realise that I lacked the stamina to continue so early morning gym sessions on the stair machine gave me the last bit of confidence needed before I slipped into the gilet, helmet and harness. On arrival at the ship, I was taken below deck to discuss all the security issues before being kitted up. My nerves were steady and my excitement was rising. Once I had the full gear on, I was led up to the deck while getting a history of the Cutty Sark on the way.

This was the coldest day of spring and it had actually snowed on my way there so the wind chill hit me as soon as I stepped outside. I was shown where I would be climbing from and where to - a platform way, way up - and then had to actually step out onto the outside of the vessel. Now it had got real. There were certain ropes you could not step on and certain things you could not hold on to. I didn’t ask why, I just made sure I didn’t break those rules. I now discovered that ropes are not steady and were swaying in the wind. Only slightly, and not a fraction as much as they would have been on the high seas when 14-year-old boys with no shoes scurried up and down this rigging but its movement was a reality check for me. I counted my blessings and moved on.

All the recent training paid off as I made steady progress up. There was a continuous stream of advice and motivational support from both above and below: “Move your leg to the left… Hold the ratline on the right… You’re doing well, keep going.” I wasn’t afraid of looking up or down to see where these voices were coming from but I chose to remain focussed on where my hands and feet were going. I knew I was nearing my destination when the voices got closer. “Just a couple more steps” I heard, and very soon I was standing on a small platform with two of the climbing crew. They took some photos and I took some photos and then I was asked if I wanted to walk out to the end of the yardarm. It was bitterly cold and the wind was blowing hard and there didn’t seem to be much

to hold on to or stand on out there but how could I come this far and not have the full experience? And so I sidled along where so many less fortunate than I had once scuttled. Yes, of course there was a safety line attached to me at all times but I never thought about it because I reckoned it would only get me thinking that it might fail so I trod carefully all the time, making that climb as if my life was in my hands. Descending was easy. I was lowered down to the ground in the harness where it took a little while to get my land legs back again. The climb was exhilarating; I can’t remember the last time I had such an adrenaline rush. Would I do it again? Absolutely. Celebrity alpacas retire as Vauxhall City Farm welcomes spring arrivals ― By Laura Burgoine

pring is in full swing as Vauxhall City Farm welcomes a slew of new animals and bids farewell to beloved alpacas Ben and Jerry, who have been fixtures of the farm for 17 years, had a cameo in Star Wars and even rubbed shoulders with royalty. When the South Londoner spoke with Rhiannon Carr, who began volunteering at the farm during lockdown and now does marketing and executive support, the farm family was eagerly awaiting the arrival of three new baby alpacas. “Ben and Jerry are 20-years-old now and they had gotten a little bit grumpy in their old age,” Rhiannon says. “They’ve gone to a private owner in Hertfordshire, who also took two of our old goats; they were all very happy to be reunited. They’ve got acres of field and grass to graze

on now so they’re having the time of their life.” The alpacas have enjoyed an illustrious career, having hobnobbed with Princess Anne back in the noughties and getting the chance to meet the Earl and Countess of Wessex, Edward and Sophie, who visited the farm’s riding school in 2020. The duo even landed a walk-on role in the 2015 Star Wars film the Force Awakens. “It was all kept very under wraps,” Rhiannon says. “We had to sign a Non Disclosure Agreement, there were no pictures allowed so there’s hardly any evidence of it, which is a tragedy. Our farm manager Michelle took them to a practice shoot and when the producers discovered how relaxed the alpacas were with her, they decided to use her instead of an on-set animal trainer.” “Ben and Jerry are in the opening sequence of the

Force Awakens. They’re meant to be aliens and they’re walking across the desert. They got really funny haircuts for it; they kept their bodies fluffy and then clipped them around the face and feet like poodles.” The alpacas have also been featured in several television commercials and photoshoots. “There’s very few alpacas in London and they’re very robust and unbothered by weather and people so I guess they’re pretty easy to work with,” Rhiannon says. “They’re also just very strange animals and I think that’s the attraction. They make this weird humming noise and they look so unusual. With all our animals here, they get a lot of exposure to people, as we’re an educational charity, so generally all our animals are very docile and sweet.” After a tough couple of years during the pandemic, Vauxhall City Farm’s riding school is now back open.

Several of the sheep and goats gave birth to lambs and kids in April, and three new alpacas have joined the family of barnyard animals (with big shoes to fill). “Throughout Covid, we were lucky to stay open for most of it since we’re an outdoor attraction but we suffered from not being able to hire out rooms for children’s birthday parties and having to close our onsite café,” Rhiannon says. “It’s still really rough for the farm; animals are very expensive to keep. We’re free to enter, which is so important for us, to be accessible. That’s why we’re an educational charity.” The farm has just started redeveloping the garden where they’ll grow vegetables and have educational spaces for visiting schools and groups. The spinners who have been spinning wool at the farm since the ‘80s will also be able to grow dye plants. Vauxhall City Farm runs with a team of ten permanent staff and a couple of hundred volunteers. “The farm team are all so wonderful,” Rhiannon says. “This is reflected in the nature of the animals.” Visit Vauxhall City Farm at 165 Tyers Street, SE11 5HS. GREAT BRITISH BAKES Frog Bakery has opened a new shop on Peckham Road following a successful crowdfunding campaign that took them from pop-up to permanent site. The bakery is the brainchild of two bakers, Oliver Costello and Rebecca Spaven, who’ve worked for Ottolenghi, Hawksmoor, Bread by Bike and Fortitude Bakehouse. MEGAN’S OPEN IN EAST DULWICH The city’s most dog-friendly restaurant is opening its 17th neighbourhood hotspot this month, launching in Lordship Lane, East Dulwich.

To celebrate the collab, which is in support of the Orangutan Foundation, the independent brewers are hosting a Q&A event with Phil Wang, Anspach & Hobday co-founder Paul Anspach and buyer for The Wine Society Freddy Bulmer in their mixed fermentation brewery and taproom, The Arch House, in Bermondsey.

With a recently updated menu for summer, Megan’s is open every day for brunch, lunch, dinner and cocktails. The loosely-Mediterranean menu features classic brunch favourites including Eggs Royale and Smashed Avocado on Toast or their signature dish: lightly spiced Shakshouka Baked Eggs. For lunch there’s the famous ‘posh’ kebabs or a fresh deli bar, which features a range of toasted sandwiches and light bites. In the evening, it’s all about a vast menu of grills, salads and Mezze Feasts for two.

The OrwanguTang is a delicately salty Gose infused with orange zest and mandarin puree. The beer will be sold exclusively through The Wine Society and Anspach & Hobday’s online store, with 50p per can going directly to the Orangutan Foundation. The proceeds of just four cans is enough to sponsor a whole acre of crucial forest habitat in Central Kalimantan.

The restaurant prides itself on being dog, laptop and child friendly. They have plenty of dog beds, water bowls and treats to go around! People can also book to work from Megan’s, which offers free Wi-Fi for all guests and plugs at every corner so you can stay all day long – from morning espresso to post-work cocktail. Happy hour runs every weekday from 5-7pm, where selected cocktails are £5.

New opening: BRIX LDN ― By Cara Cummings

American-style hospitality comes to Great Guildford Street

ity the food writers of 2022. Gastronomically inclined scribes must today navigate a world where language no longer means what it used to. Restaurants are now ‘concepts’, menus ‘a journey’ and the humble dinner a multi-course performance art piece with weapons-grade special effects and the marketing budget of a national tourist board. It’s hard to write restaurant reviews for restaurants that don’t want to be restaurants - but strap in, and we’ll give it a go. BRIX LDN bills itself as a ‘project’. Specifically, the third project from Michael Lythgoe and Cidalia Rodrigues, the duo behind Brixton Village Grill (RIP) and Chip Shop, on the corner of Coldharbour Lane. Lythgoe and Rodrigues have experimental form - Chip Shop being as much an iconic live hip hop venue as a chippie - and at first glance, BRIX LDN is a rapid escalation of that innovative zeal. ‘PRIVATE DINING, EXHIBITIONS, ALL DAY DINING, HOT DESKS, ALBUM LAUNCHES, FILM SCREENINGS, WEEKLY DJs AND LIVE EVENTS’ screams the website with block-capitalled fervour. Project indeed. Then again, BRIX LDN has a whopping 8,500 square feet of prime Bankside real estate to fill. Not that you’d realise at first glance - hovering just off Southwark Street like a shy aunt at a wedding, the

venue is so modestly identified you’re likely to walk straight past and end up in Caravan next door. But blimey, it’s a Tardis inside. Parallel bar and lounge spaces give way to a cavernous ground floor dining room. Private dining rooms and a late night bar-cum-club space sprawl below. Decor throughout is light-touch industrial meets urban American hotel; accessibly cool, rather than achingly on trend. It’s your mum in trainers, not your nephew in a kimono. To those worn out by the warehouse trend, it will feel a bit meh - but in fairness BRIX LDN seems to be playing for a very mixed crowd. On the night we visit, first dates, family dinners and a raucous work social all play out. It feels like an airport lounge; you could happily lose several hours here without realising. ‘But what’s the vibe they’re going for?’ asks my dinner date. ‘New York…?’, I hazard a guess, spotting framed graffiti on a wall. Encounters with staff confirm the hunch. Nowhere does hospitality quite like the States, and the BRIX LDN team personify service in its purest form: charming, attentive, discrete. The General Manager offers to choose a cocktail for me, which arrives with an American serve of ice and a not unpleasant hint of Jolly Ranchers sweets. Yep: we’re heading stateside. The menu is mixed to the point of being baffling, featuring small plates, flatbreads, mains, a grill section,

burgers, fish and chips… definitely American in its determination to serve. That said, it’s the first menu I’ve seen without a weighty ethos or PR-scribed ‘vision’ in a long time. It’s refreshing to be allowed to form our own conclusions. Likewise, to see vegetarians amply catered for with ambitious choices like asparagus pot pie and a hemp and cauliflower burger. Not that carnivores will complain. “The chicken butter comes with fried chicken on top,” purrs a waiter. We may as well apply for US visas. Small plate starters are impressive across the board. British asparagus with coconut cream, preserved lemon and fennel is so fresh it’s like eating a spring field. Sweetcorn chowder with roasted chickpeas and curry oil packs a deeply comforting punch, with the kind of flavour you need after a walk in a storm. So stuffed

with tender oxtail are the doughnuts themselves that they positively burp when you move them. Much like me, afterwards. Mains are enormous, without looking it. (A word on portions: Arrive. Hungry.) Marmite glazed beef short rib with kohlrabi remoulade, chilli and pecorino arrives perfectly cooked. Whoever mans the grill at BRIX clearly knows what they’re doing. The kohlrabi is clever, and keeps a heavy dish light, but risks watering down the overall offering. Sadly, the Marmite glaze looks much tastier than it is; you’d expect more than the mere hint of flavour achieved. It’s a genuine shame when meat is this expertly cooked. Rosemary chips make up for it, though sassily seasoned, a joyous bowlful is worth visiting BRIX for alone. Likewise the hemp and cauliflower burger, a towering pillar of a meal stuffed with mango chutney and house pickles that will delight vegetarians and committed meat-lovers alike. To puddings, and a similarly mixed bag. Dime bar cheesecake comes drowning in a berry coulis that sadly makes it taste like any other cheesecake. (And

with just one singular piece of Dime bar in the entire slice, arguably it could be.) It's a proper coulis, full of succulent blitzed raspberries, but still. Gin infused doughnuts with cardamom, dulce de leches and pomegranate are much better - densely sweet like an Indian desert, full of syrupy goodness and an ambition you can taste. In other eateries, they’d be hard-sold as a house classic - but at BRIX LDN, they sit happily on the menu waiting to be discovered. They don’t need to be shouted about, or billed as anything other than what they are: a very good pudding. Perhaps that’s the defining point, then, of this pleasant if slightly puzzling new venue. Instead of forcing an identity on diners, BRIX LDN provides a generous, warm environment for people to - whisper it - have whatever kind of dinner they’d like. inetika Bloco is joining the pageant, which will wind through the streets of Westminster and along the Mall and past Buckingham Palace, telling the story of Her Majesty’s record reign and transformation of society over this unprecedented period.

River of Hope River of Hope is a spectacular celebration of street band music, youth creativity and dance by Thames Festival Trust with music by Kinetika Bloco and Oi Musica. With music, artwork and costumes drawing on themes of connection, togetherness, environment and climate justice, the performance makes a conscious choice to exemplify the power of unity and collective action. River of Hope acknowledges the past as a foothold for the future – respecting heritage and celebrating varied cultures, histories and viewpoints. The music will be performed by Kinetika Bloco, featuring 120 young people including street drummers, steel pans, wind and brass and a dance section. The Bloco’s ranks will be boosted by 30 professional guest musicians from across the UK courtesy of Edinburgh street band organisation Oi

Musica, together creating a New Orleans-inspired wall of sousaphones–the largest ever to parade in the UK! 200 flags are currently being designed through Thames Festival Trust’s River of Hope creative learning project, which links schools around the world through the study of rivers. The designs created will be featured on flags, animated by 200 young people from schools across London and choreographed by Kinetika Bloco’s lead choreographer Leon Hazlewood. With 350 parading performers channelling their energy, talent, passion, pain and joy into an extraordinary performance, River of Hope is a large-scale carnival piece bound to be extraordinary, intoxicating and powerful. For those of us who wish to find lasting happiness in our relationships, we might benefit from deepening our emotional flexibility to allow for things to die or fall away as part of a process of renewal. The inability to face the regeneration process in our relationships causes many love relationships to fail. To love, we must be strong but wise. Strength comes from the spirit, and wisdom comes from grappling with the regeneration process and how it shows up in our love relationships. So, how do we embrace new beginnings in old relationships or accommodate a partner or child's newly found restlessness or change of heart in some critical matter? These things can be unsettling for us creatures of habit. Most of us don’t like change. We've all been there, decided we would like to emigrate to a new country, climb a mountain or leave a relationship that we've outgrown, only to face the wrath of those closest to us. Or worst still, the wrath of our own inner fear driven authority. If we want to be effective at giving and receiving love, we could start by loving ourselves. Self-love is the cornerstone of any good relationship. And it is self-love that roots us in ourselves and facilitates the emotional resilience and rootedness needed to allow loved ones the space to follow their bliss. It might be time to normalise the life/death/life cycle in human relationships, both with self and others. We gotta let things die for new, more significant things to emerge. Things that reflect who we are today, things

ghostly grip and dives under his bed covers. The wet bones lay lifeless on the floor, illuminated by the crackling open fire; soon, she begins to grow skin and reform into a whole real woman. This skeleton woman is his wife. The message in this haunting story, describes how terrified we become when someone we love, or a part of them, needs the space to die and re-emerge as something new. We often hear divorcing couples refer to their partner as monsters or unrecognisable. It can be hideous when someone we love is changing or becoming unfamiliar to us. Hideous perhaps but personal no. If we want to become more effective at giving and receiving love, we will do well to soften and grant ourselves and those we love the space to heed the inner prompting that calls for a part of us/them to die to make space for something new to emerge. Our intuition is powerful and will lead us into a natural regeneration. We just need to trust ourselves and others. For 2 decades, I walked away (perhaps ran) from relationships the minute I would see that bony hand of death ravaging through my nicely put together love story and how it should pan out. Before learning about this life/death/life cycle, my relationships were over when 'things' seemed to be dying. I was not brave enough to see what new thing might emerge. Fearing the worst. I remember one relationship where we seemed to be drifting apart. Evenings in were quieter, less exciting and spontaneous. I left my partner, not understanding that the relationship was communicating to us, trying to make way for a newer, more profound and authentic

gathered from all we have learned along the way so far - a learning that has impacted who we are and what we want. A commitment to strengthen our emotional resilience is a commitment more useful than marriage. Such a covenant to strengthen resilience leaves us better equipped to face the blustering winds and heinous adaptations love drags us through. Is this the price of loving? Whether for or against it, it seems "we're all afraid when it comes to love. It is nothing new." This is the sentiment offered to us by Mexican/American Poet and Psychoanalyst Dr Clarissa Pinkola Estes. In her New York Times bestselling book Women who run with the wolves, Dr Estes issues a warning alongside a haunting and ancient cry, summoning us all to drop our fears around love and face the ravaging hand of death as it caresses and molests our best-laid plans. The process of death and regeneration or resurrection, according to Dr Estes, is intricately woven into the very fabric of our romantic relationships and even the heart of love itself. She calls it the life/death/life cycle. She shares the telling of the Skeleton Woman, an ancient myth from Mexico, about a man out fishing in the deep darkness of nighttime. He sinks his rod into the water only to discover, to his horror, that his rod has got caught in the bones of a Skeleton Woman's rib cage. He is terrified. He tosses his rod overboard and frantically rows his little boat back to shore. Dashing to safety, he doesn't realise that the skeleton woman is still attached to a piece of his clothing. He unwittingly drags her home, rips himself free from her

thing to emerge. When an injured bodily organ regenerates itself, or one beholds mother nature, we see the extraordinary process of the life/death/life cycle unfolding in awe. This process permeates every level of our existence. Love and relationships are no exception. Each passing year we witness the trees shed their skin, but we don't panic. Instead we trust, that an intelligence and power greater than us will replenish and restore them. No matter what you face, find the same faith in your relationships. Give that divine intelligence and power the same trust to repair and fix whatever you feel is ending or being taken away. Trust the process. It will always work for your good. A love letter to south London ―

How would you describe south London - and south Londoners - in a nutshell? “Community” is the word I would use for south London. Everyone has been incredibly welcoming and there are a lot of different groups and networks that have come in to say hello and welcome us to the neighbourhood. It has really been wonderful.

How long has Pretty Shiny Shop been open in south London? What made you want to set up here? We opened our doors in November 2021, so we are still getting to know our new neighbourhood. I was told about the area by Stephen Ludlow of Ludlow Thompson. He had just opened a new branch in Finsbury Park, where my other shop is located, and we got to chatting. I had been thinking about opening a second shop and the area sounded like a good fit. Long story short – here I am! What does a typical week in south London involve for you? I move between the Finsbury Park and Oval shops during the week. You will often see me coming out of the Oval tube with a suitcase. I’m not coming from anywhere exotic, just bringing stock from the other shop! On the weekend my husband and I will often be here working after hours as there are lots of little “tweaks” that we are still making to the shop. We love to go to the farmers' market at St. Mark’s Church, and lunch from Bokit’la has become a tradition. Last weekend we went for a veggie roast at 24 The Oval and it was amazing. I sense a new tradition in the making! What are your favourite south London eateries? Brixton Road is crammed with amazing places to eat. I love Conuco, a Venezuelan place where you get a fresh and generously filled arepa. Mimis Deli has amazing sandwiches and both Rhoda

and Adulis Eritrean restaurants are fantastic for dinner. We were lucky enough to beat the crowd at Taro one Saturday night and enjoyed some of the best sushi we’ve had in a while there. We also had a phenomenal dinner at 48, which has wines out front but then a lovely restaurant in the back with wonderful food and atmosphere. I plan to bring my staff for our next get together. I think my best find, though, was Malinka Delicatessen. It sells handmade, fresh perogies – traditional Polish dumpling - including the sauerkraut filled variety, which means I often just pop over and pick up a couple for dinner. Sorted! Where do you shop for clothes and homeware in south London? When getting things ready for opening I was constantly popping up to Brixton to find things. I found some fabulous fabric shops there. Have any fellow south Londoners been an inspiration or motivation in chasing your dreams? I have to thank Stephen Ludlow of Ludlow Thompson for introducing me to the Oval Parade and area. He described exactly what I was looking for in a neighbourhood and I don’t think I would have made the move to open a second Pretty Shiny
