A photography exhibition exploring how landscape photography has developed over the last 25 years is arriving at the Oxo Gallery. FETE
Now in its 22nd year, the Abbeville Fete returns to Clapham on Saturday 30June (12pm-5pm). There’s 100 stalls, a street BBQ and bar, a dedicated Kids Zone, a fancy dress parade (this year’s theme is circus), live music, and a dog beauty pageant. The Church of the Holy Spirit has been holding the Abbeville Fete since 1997; last year the fete raised £27,000 for the five local causes. Latin America fest returns
G
et ready to party like it’s Cinco de Mayo at Elephant Park. South Social Meets Latin America is celebrating all things Latino with two days of independent cinema, dance, world music, art, and regional cuisine. Held in the brand new Elephant Park, which holds 500 people, the first day (Friday 29 June) is dedicated to Argentina, while the second day (Saturday 30 June) is devoted to Colombia. Festival director Paola Melli said this is the first time the South Social Film Festival has been held outdoors. “The Latin American community is really tight in London,” Paola told the Weekender. “Elephant and Castle was a very poor area with cheap housing when people moved there, and the Latin American community formed naturally and organically. The Colombian community is particularly tight knit.” “We’re going to have everything possible to represent the culture,” she continued. “There’s dance workshops, music that needs a big band and makes lots of noise, children’s activities in the park,

volunteers doing face-painting, and then at 8:30pm we’re using the LCD screen in the park to show films.” The Argentine film is the popular Wild Tales. “It’s a classic with lots of black humour and really weird situations,” Paola said. “I wanted to focus more on comedy.” For the second day, themed around Colombia, 82 year old Elsa Perez is teaching a dance workshop. “She’s got loads to teach us,” Paola said. “She’ll teach people the movements and afterwards a big band of seven or eight musicians is playing.” The Colombian film, Amalia the Secretary is a “very delicate comedy about a woman trying to deal with being single, in a huge city. It tells a lot about society there,” Paola said. South Social started two years ago as a “very classic festival” with 12 screenings. It’s expanded to incorporate other cultural elements: music, food, and dance. “We have different food stalls: Argentine, Chilean, Mexican, and cocktails form Latin America,” Paola said. “It’s Pisco Sours all the way.”
We’ll drink to that! Friday 29June: Argentina -The day kicks off with a Latin American dance workshop led by dancer and choreographer Damarys Farres. -The 7pm concert, with Brixton Cumbia Association, brings the best songs from Argentina to London.
-The event culminates at 8:30pm with a screening of the classic black humour comedy Wild Tales by Damián Szifron. Saturday 30 June: Colombia -Dancer Elsa Perez gets the event started with her internationally renowned Latin American dance workshop from 6pm-7pm. -Nirk Molina Vallenato King, a star

Strictly fantastic Review
F
ans of Baz Luhrmann’s 1992 film Strictly Ballroom must see the West End stage adaptation. It takes everything that dazzles in the movie, and saturates it in sequins and live energy that leaps off the stage. There’s showstopping dancing, fantastic music, and –of course- a healthy dose of bogo pogo.

Directed and choreographed by Drew McOnie, the Piccadilly theatre production stays faithful to the original script almost to the word. And Luhrmann’s debut movie is a heck of a script, an Ugly Duckling meets Cinderella meets David and Goliath timeless tale told in true Aussie style, capturing all the camp comedy of New South Wales’ ballroom dance scene. For those who don’t know their Samba from their Rumba, Strictly Ballroom follows Cha-Cha-ing hero Scott Hastings, played brilliantly by Jonny Label, as he struggles to suppress his radical dance style on his quest to win the Pan-Pacific Grand Prix Dancing Championship; a coveted title

he has been training for since childhood but which stipulates contestants must dance steps that are strictly ballroom. Paired with ugly duckling, left footed Fran he must learn to dance to the rhythm of his heart. It’s a simple, touching story set to a soundtrack of highoctane hits including Love is in the Air, Dancing with Myself, I’m so excited, Time after Time, and many, many more. There’s so much music people often mistake Strictly Ballroom for a musical but it’s not. It’s just a film with a great soundtrack. The dancing is excellent, the live band superb, and the story moves at Baz Luhrmann speed; sufferers of vertigo, be warned. A sequinned, (and in one scene: on rollerskates) moustachioed Will Young plays MC Wally Strand, singing most of the tracks, and maintaining an impressive Australian accent throughout. The entire cast is a treat: funny, energetic, and phenomenally talented. Strictly Ballroom is the purest mood elevator you’ll find. s SW4 prepares for the 15th South West Four festival, drum and bass legend Andy C talks to the Weekender about his headlining gig. “I’ve played there many, many times,” Andy said. “This is going to be a big one. One long, massive weekend. It’s always brilliant.” “I’ve always got something

a brief history Festivals in Bermondsey date as far back as ‘A Fête at Bermondsey or A Marriage Feast at Bermondsey’, reimagined by Flemish painter Marcus Gheeraerts the Elder (left). The Bermondsey Carnival first came to town in July 1900, as a fundraising event for the Daily Telegraph’s war time ‘Widows and Orphans’ support fund during the Boer War (1899 - 1902). For nearly 120 years, the Carnival has evolved into an annual event, establishing itself in the process as a local treasure that the people of Bermondsey are immensely

proud of. It has continued to be celebrated through numerous changes to the area, a host of national and local governments as well as two world wars. Sometime in the early 1980s, however, the celebrations gradually faded away and eventually ceased to be. But, on a late summer’s evening at The Ancient Foresters pub, two local residents reminisced about the good old days of the Carnival. And, after receiving support from The Friends of Southwark Park and later Bermondsey Beat, the Carnival was back on the agenda.

From page 23... Last year over 150,000 people attended throughout the weekend; the show is one of the biggest free family festivals in the UK. This year’s Lambeth Country Show is free and un-ticketed. There’s horticultural shows, sheep and owl displays, home grown vegetable and flower competitions, an abundance of craft and food stalls and the Show’s onsite farm. The council has redesigned the usual layout of the festival across the park, increasing the size of the Main Arena and the newly named Brockwell Farm area. The main funfair is returning this year, however there’s still the children’s funfair and bouncy castle rides. Music always plays a big part of the show too, featuring a mix of dub, Afro-beat, disco, jazz, folk, ska and soul. Sunday will welcome back Roots Reggae Day to the Main Stage while the Village Green stage will showcase an eclectic mix of local talent playing acoustic folk, choir, soul and pop, along with steel orchestras and samba bands.

Urban Arts is back
L
ondon’s largest annual open-air Contemporary Arts Fair returns to Brixton’s Josephine Avenue.
Urban Art fair, now in its 17th year, is a creative showcase for local talent, and an affordable exhibition space for both new and established artists and makers. Over 1,000 pieces of work are on display from over 100 artists, ranging from the novice to the established. Prices range from under a tenner to over £1000 with work from painters, printmakers, street artists, photographers and mixed media. 10,000 visitors are expected across the weekend, while this year also features a selection of food stalls selling Mexican food, Caribbean eats, healthy smoothies and coffee. Urban Art was created in 2002 by Josephine Avenue resident and portrait artist Timothy Sutton who saw the railings in the street and realised it was a natural open air gallery. “I knew from experience the lack of affordable and credible exhibition space so this was a bit of a no brainer really,” he said.

All fired up at The South London Theatre The South London Theatre has been entertaining the local and wider community for 50 years, but has been closed for the last two, writes Michael Holland...
Charlotte Benstead, trustee of the SLT’s Building Preservation Trust, explains why: “The building is Grade II listed and was on the at-risk register, and fixing this is not cheap,” she said. “We had no real help with the process of fundraising or project managing a major refurbishment project but once we got the funding in place [around £2 million] we moved out to our temporary home at Stanley Halls.” A further £100,000 is needed to bring the former Fire Station up to the full specifications. With the major work complete the building now has to pay for itself and repay the loans. Rooms will soon be available for groups to hire and there will be a concerted effort to boost membership numbers. Life will be very different at the new SLT. “We are training a team of volunteers to run tours around

the theatre’s history exhibition and we are hosting the first ever West Norwood Arts Festival in August,” Charlotte told the Weekender. “We are starting our programme of daytime activities in a couple of weeks with some story time and messy play sessions. From July we will be taking bookings for school groups. We are still planning on delivering our core business of 20 shows a year and the current programme includes Toad of Toad Hall, so make sure you get your tickets!” The South London Theatre has an official opening weekend on 30th June and 1st July. There will be a theatre day with youth group taster session and an audition workshop. On Sunday it’s open to families for tours, talks and workshops. There is a history talk about firefighting in London and a treasure hunt taking place. Comedian Angela Barnes is a patron and will do the official opening. Mayor to harness power of tech and data to tackle London’s challenges Older and more vulnerable Londoners are among those set to benefit from a range of tech innovations under a major new initiative launched by the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan. The Civic Innovation
Challenge will match tech startups with leading companies and public bodies to create innovative solutions to some of London’s most pressing problems. Among the projects being developed is a digital archive of material to be used in
reminiscence therapy, to alleviate the most distressing symptoms of dementia – specifically designed for Londoners of a Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) background. This therapy uses video, audio and images to trigger long-term memories in dementia patients but currently services tend to only be relevant to white Londoners. Dr Daniel Harwood , Consultant Psychiatrist and Clinical Director, South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust said: “We hope that by working with people from local black and minority ethnic populations
to develop resources, we can help carers of people with dementia and our services to provide person centred support which, takes into account the person’s story, their culture and history. The way of the dragon healer
D
ragon healer and health guru Darryl Kempster is known by many names. The Healers’ Healer, the Dragon Man, and –most notably in New York- the Angel on Wall Street. The former bodyguard works with celebrities, musicians, professional athletes, CEOs and industry leaders. His client record, of 12 years, boasts an 85 percent single session success rate. So, what is dragon healing? The Weekender went to Surrey Quays’ Lodge Space to find out.
After one session with Darryl he says something you rarely hear in the service industry. “I hope I never see you again.” Because one session is all he needs to work his magic. This is a tough business model: a success rate so high you rarely get repeat customers. Darryl has had people come to him who have been going to chiropractors and physios for years who walk away pain free after one hour of his dragon healing. The Dragon Clinic helps issues that are physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. The session usually takes around 40 minutes but varies from person to person, and can take longer. It begins with about 10 minutes of talking and going through any questions. “This is a very important part of the process, so that you feel comfortable and at ease and have a good idea of what will be happening,” Darryl said. When Darryl works he conducts a body scan - it’s like getting a service and MOT for your body - and examines what healing required is appropriate and necessary at the time. He places clients into an altered state of consciousness; this is to intellectually remove your mind from what is happening. You’re still completely aware and fully conscious throughout the treatment and in full control. From my own experience, I can say dragon healing is very powerful, pretty spooky, and I was stunned by what Darryl found. But more on that later. Darryl describes himself as “the biggest sceptic” but he’s been experiencing visions since he was six years old. It never scared him because it was all he knew. As a teenager he was surrounded by loss. “Between the ages 15 to 19 I lost about 35 people,” he said. He had a different view to death though because he could still hear and see the souls who had passed to the other side. “They say the

wounded are the best healers,” Darryl said. Around the same time, psychics and mediums were gaining popularity with television shows like Crossing Over with John Edward. Studying martial arts from childhood, Darryl became a bodyguard, had a child, and tried to shut out the voices and visions that had been with him for so long. The visions stopped. Two years later, in 2012, he was meditating–with open eyes- and saw a black dragon in the room. “This is usually the point where I lose people,” Darryl joked. “The dragon said ‘congratulations, we’re real.’ They were the first inhabitants on earth. They say the world is in dire straits and they don’t want it destroyed by humans,” he said. The dragons also claim to have suffered a case of mistaken identity. “There’s a famous painting where Archangel Michael is shown slaying Satan as a dragon, but that’s actually a reptile. So the dragons shifted their vibrations so we can no longer see them.” In 2014, the dragons appeared again and told Darryl “you work for us from tomorrow. Shut down your company.” He closed the health and healing company he’d been building for four years, kept his day job working at a gym, and was “delivered information every day”
from then on. In 2015, the dragons gave Darryl the green light to start healing. He does this by placing his hands on people, and seeing where the problems lie. “The area lights up, like a blue LED light on the part of the body,” Darryl said. He’s also a trained nutritionist, has worked with several healing mentors, and is currently studying for his Personal Trainer certificate. His understanding of the link between physical pain and underlying emotional issues is very keen. “When I’m healing people I’ll always hear a voice that says ‘you’re done’ when I’m finished,” he said. Darryl sees a maximum of four
clients a day because the practise can be so physically tiring. He also runs clinics in New York, and soon will start in Los Angeles. Darryl has been told by mentors that he’s operating at a very high level. Following a plant-based, caffeine-free diet, he created a clear channel to transmit energy through. Unlike reiki however, the energy doesn’t transmit through him but rather he creates space and it moves around him. I didn’t mention any physical ailments to Daryl beforehand but during the session I could feel my stomach stirring. Afterwards he told me he’d performed psychic surgery on my pancreas, and right kidney. Now he really had my
attention. I experienced a mystery stomach illness last year, had ultrasounds and scans and after many tests the doctor suspected some issue with my pancreas. The pain subsided while I was waiting for the NHS to give me an appointment for blood tests and scans, and I never followed it up. But I feel nauseous fairly regularly and kept meaning to get my pancreas checked. And now the dragons have sorted it. I’m thrilled. At the end of the session Darryl ran me through all the areas he’d worked on, and said I’d be in detox for the following ten days as my body released stored toxins, and let go of things that no longer served me. I’ve spent the days since feeling sick and more tired than usual, and am certain it’s not psychosomatic.
