Now in its third year, Drunken Chorus’ free mini festival A Bit of a Do returns, championing the work of artists with and without disabilities. Performances include Candoco Dance Company, the first contemporary dance company to perform on Strictly Come Dancing, deaf BSL singer and comedian Caroline Parker, who performed at the London Paralympic Opening ceremony, and multi-award winning writer, performer and broadcaster Byron Vincent. There’s also solo work from award winning choreographer and performance artist Lanre Malaolu as well as from Extant, the UK’s leading company making performances by and for the visually impaired. ALL’S WELL IN STOCKWELL Stockwell Festival is a celebration of the area’s world class tango and taekwondo teachers, Portuguese delicacies, Afro-Caribbean music, Horn of Africa arts, Brazilian cuisine, Polish crafts, international jazz musicians and much more. Hub Coffee House in Kennington will play host to a food and beer evening: Five beer and five dishes for £15.

Draughts Waterloo is serving a range of Brooklyn Brewery and London Fields Brewery beers during the venue’s tasting on 3 July, followed by a choice of over 600 board games.

Craft beer pioneers Brooklyn Brewery have teamed up with the annual Waterloo Food Fortnight where they’ll be hosting beer pairing evenings and Fourth of July celebrations. The fortnight kicks off with a ‘90s themed street party taking over the whole of Lower Marsh with DJs, street food and films on a big screen. The Brooklyn Brewery after party is in the beer garden at Café Del Marsh.

3D figurines custom made in

M

eet the brothers pioneering the world of 3D portraits. Marcin and Piotr Piosik are the creators of My 3D Twin, making personalised figurines in their studio in Bermondsey. They’re the only company of their kind in the UK. On my visit to the studio, a couple was just finishing up having their photos taken for custom-made wedding cake toppers.

“These wedding cake toppers live on beyond the wedding day. You can keep them on your mantel piece next to your wedding portrait,” Marcin told the Weekender.

The studio in Bermondsey’s Biscuit Factory is the beating heart of the operation. Marcin and Piotr built the

circular photo booth where customers stand to pose. 64 Canon cameras line columns around the booth, which pick up every angle and detail. Piotr wired up all the electrics. “He’s an electrician. In the way that in Poland everyone does everything and nothing. We all do a bit of everything,” Marcin said.

The brothers launched the company six years ago.

They wanted to leave the corporate world where they were working in IT and initially decided to open an online store. “We didn’t want flat images of the products though,” Marcin said. “We wanted to show the products in 3D and that’s how we started with a 3D scanner.”

The 3D printer comes from the States with a hefty price-tag. Generally these printers are used for creating prototypes. Marcin experimented by making a model of his brother to see how it would turn out. The result is incredibly lifelike figurines, made of plaster powder.

When people come in to the studio, the brothers take 10-20 photos, which the customer can choose their favourite from. After the photos are taken, Piotr uses “a kind of 3D Photoshop” to create the image for the printer and then it prints out a block of plaster with the figure inside it, in full colour. Marcin and Piotr hoover away all the excess plaster (which goes back into the machine) and then use a tiny brush to remove the rest of the excess to reveal the detailed shape beneath. The figure is then coated in resin to make the colours pop, bring out all the finer details and preserve it.

From the date of visiting the studio, it takes around two

weeks to create the figurines. “Each piece is a piece of art,” Marcin said.

“I sent figures of me and my brother to my Mum in Poland for Mother’s Day and now when we facetime she’ll say ‘I was just having coffee with you’ and has the figures sitting next to her on the table,” he said.

The mini-models are proving popular for pets, as well as special occasions like graduations, birthday cakes and 3D family portraits -like a nativity set for your own family.

“It’s a unique and personalised photograph that’s so different to a portrait,” Marcin said.

He references traditional photographs where 30 years ago people were buying film, then taking photos which had to be developed and out of a set of, say, 30, a lot of them would be bad. “Now with phones we take photos constantly and it costs us nothing and we don’t really do anything with them and they’ve sort of lost their value,” Marcin said.

Over the next few months, Marcin and Piotr are taking their photo booth to university graduations. The wedding cake toppers remain their most in-demand product.

“It’s a new concept,” Marcin said. “It’s all done in-house and finished by hand. Each figure is a piece of artistry.”

French American tunes for Independence Day

M

usical wanderer Cory Seznec is recreating his unique world in Rotherhithe’s St Mary’s Church. A French-American musician based in Paris, Cory blends his early introduction to American fingerstyle guitar and clawhammer banjo with techniques he discovered on more recent travels in East Africa. This mix has given birth to a more cross-pollinated style, which he describes as “music that sits somewhere just outside the bluegrass-bluesfolk-country-world music time-stream, dipping its toe in all of them.”

Cory is joined by his stellar group of fellow musicians: David Chalumeau on harmonica, Daniel Mizrahi on guitar and Renaud Ollivier on percussion.

IN THE DARK Photographer Eddie Otchere is crafting a pop-up darkroom experience in the San Mei Gallery.

You’ll be given Kodak P3200 film, a camera from Eddie’s archive to shoot Brixton with, and you’ll get to display the print you make at a final exhibition on Sunday 30 June. You’ll then be assisted in the developing and creation of contact sheets and printing of the work, as well as curating the display. Eddie is best known for his photographs of the seminal rappers and DJs of the mid 1990s and early noughties. His celebrated works include portraits of Biggie Smalls, Blackstar (Mos Def & Thalib Kweli), So Solid Crew, Est’elle, and Goldie. Eddie’s photographs have been exhibited and published worldwide, including on the covers of major international magazines such as Urb, Lodown and Mixmag and on the covers of some of rap music’s seminal albums.

t seems increasingly, Shakespeare’s plays are adapted to incorporate contemporary issues, ensuring their continued appeal to modern day audiences. Some adaptations have been questionable, to say the least, not so, however, this Nicholas Hytner version of Midsummer’s Night Dream.

An austere and unnerving start, reminiscent of a Handmaid’s Tale scene, reveals a spartan

world that lacks warmth, which, thankfully, is later replaced with wondrous escapades full of devilment. This immersive production relies on hydraulic stages that rise and fall creating an illusion of lush, misty woods. Spangled fairies tumbled and slither round brass bedsteads transporting us into a magical wonderland where dreams and reality distort.

In that dreamscape beds are instrumental to the set of this production, but they are not the harmonious space you might expect, and instead we see the young lovers chasing, raging, sparring and unashamedly displaying their jealousy as much as we see them declare their love, showing us all is not perfect - especially when spells are cast. Hermia and Helena, free of their gendered handcuffs, move wildly about the forest floor where they can be uninhibited.

Confronted by this vibrant, imaginative and exciting production, so fresh in appeal, you may forget its 400 year plus origins and embrace what this adaptation makes possible to achieve.

Characters’ synchronise words and actions so beautifully, that despite the ‘olde’ text as Helena

shamelessly pursues Demetrius we are in no doubt of her intentions. Paying attention to this detail goes a long way in helping audiences stay on board with events.

This Midsummer Night’s Dream capitalises on punky Puck’s mischievousness to address issues of cross-racial and cross-gender relationships.

Sprinkling magical flower nectar onto the eye lids of slumbering lovers he creates hilarious outcomes, using humour as a method of encouraging us to accept change in the world without us feeling threatened. And as you see Bottom, complete with ass’s ears, emerge from the bubbly bath tub your imagination is sure to be stretched.

A must-see production, inviting you to explore life’s magic.

An unmissable weekend of events With over 100,000 people attending throughout the weekend last year, the Lambeth Country Show is one of the biggest free family festivals in the UK. You can expect all the attractions of a traditional country show plus much more. Horticultural shows, sheep and owl displays, home grown vegetable and flower competitions, an abundance of craft and food stalls and an onsite farm for all to enjoy.

Music always plays a big part of the show, featuring a mix of dub, Afro-beat, disco, jazz, folk, ska and soul. The Village Green stage will showcase an eclectic mix of local talent

playing acoustic folk, choir, soul and pop, along with steel orchestras and samba bands. The Main Stage hosts an array of local and international talent with funk, soul, disco and well known hits on Saturday. Sunday hosts Roots Day with ska, dub and reggae acts from across the globe. There’s all of this and more with a distinctively urban south London vibe.

With a mix of live music, traditional countryside pursuits, agriculture, horticulture, science and fun competitions, the show really does have something for everyone over a funpacked weekend.

MUSIC MAIN STAGE: Saturday 20 July from 3:30pm-4:30pm Possessing one of the finest voices in contemporary British UK soul, Vanessa Haynes (Incognito) and her 10-piece band present a retrospective discography of music spanning several decades for this very special festival tribute that celebrates the life of the late and legendary Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin (1942-2018).

Vanessa Haynes is a London-based singer/piano player who has been performing worldwide over 15 years. She became one of the lead singers of the internationally acclaimed UK jazz/funk band Incognito in late 2008. The band boasts 17 studio albums and 2 Top 20 Hits (Always There 1990), (Don’t You Worry ‘Bout A Thing 1992) and after 35 years is still touring today.

In early 2008 Vanessa became a backing vocalist to Van Morrison, performing around the world with him. She has worked and recorded with other notable artists including Anastacia, Mario Biondi, Goldie, Chaka Khan, LuLu, Billy Ocean, Dave Stewart and Leon Ware.

MAIN STAGE: Saturday 20 July from 5pm-6pm Jan Kincaid, the former drummer, songwriter, producer, and founder of the Brand New Heavies met Dawn Joseph, the vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, when she started singing for the Heavies in 2013. The pair instantly clicked, and within their first week of working together, they were writing songs. By the end of their first month, they already had far too many for the Heavies to realistically put out.

Now they’ve formed their own band, MF Robots – their name, a subtle dig at how generic today’s music climate has become – based around Joseph’s effusive vocals, mindful of soul’s golden age but no revival, and Kincaid’s killer rhythms. Touchstones for Joseph are Anita Baker, Gladys Knight and Whitney; their classicism viewed here through a modern lens. “The first time I heard Dawn sing, I was gripped,” says

and that’s probably why we have so many singersongwriters singing depressing songs at the moment.

But someone needs to be providing the pressure valve; the escapism; the much needed party funk so you can step outside for a while, and that’s our role, that’s what we do.”

Kincaids’ brother Per played bass on several of the tracks, and other musicians included Naz Adamson (bass), Mark Beaney (guitar) and the horn section is made up of Graeme flowers (trumpet) and Andy Ross (sax).

“We’re about authenticity, integrity, personality and heart,” says Joseph. “About bringing fun to people because there is nothing wrong and everything right with feeling good.”

London HipHopera band Josephine and the Artizans (JATA) is a group that fuses hip-hop with classical music. The 6-piece line-up consists of classical strings, heavy beats, operatic vocals and energetic rap. Josephine founded the band to bring back classical music with a twist and make the genre more accessible to all.

Former London Fire Brigade HQ: Period-conversion and new-build flats, studios and duplexes

or nearly 150 years, London Fire Brigade’s former HQ has watched over Southwark Bridge Road, its cherry-red doublefronted doors the only sign of the immense role it once played in protecting London’s famous skyline.

Built in 1878 in response to a major blaze that threatened to ravage the Capital, Southwark Fire Station’s design was so influential that it became the

blueprint for many other neighbouring fire stations in the ensuing years.

Head down to Southwark today, and there’s an unmissable buzz of excitement in the air. The once unoccupied Grade II listed building is being lovingly transformed to its former glory - albeit with a modern twist.
