CLAPHAM’S NEW LGBTQ+ FESTIVAL

Clapham Omnibus’ 96 Festival boasts 16 productions and performances of or relating to LGBTQ+ issues, resilience and art. Named after the Pride after-march party held on Clapham Common in 1996, the headline piece of theatre is the Soul of Wittgenstein, which runs from 6-25 Feb. Queer activist and Fun Palaces founder Stella Duffy is doing a live improv show for three nights.

Eye of the tiger

D

avid Greenwood marked his final day of work at the London Eye by running a marathon on a treadmill inside a capsule on the London Eye. David, who worked at the famous landmark for eight years, is a keen runner, having completed two marathons in the past, and wanted to complete the challenge as a unique way to say goodbye to the Eye as he moves on to a new job at the Olympic Stadium.

“The capsule was mine for the whole day. I had a couple of people from my team there for the duration, we installed the treadmill, and some speakers and I had tunes to keep me motivated,” David told the Weekender.

“Obviously it’s a little easier running on a treadmill than on the road, but it’s mentally harder” he said. The 34-year-old completed the 26.2 mile distance in 3 hours and 14 minutes, or 6.5 rotations of the Eye. “You can feel the wheel rotation a bit, and every time they stop I noticed it a bit. It was weird; you could hear the crowds cheering when you got to the bottom.”

“I’ve always wanted to do it.

Initially my bosses were kind of sceptical. Someone else had done it but I’m one of the few to do it,” he said.

“To be honest I didn’t do a huge amount of training. I beat my personal best of 3 hours 44 minutes; I was really happy with the result,” he continued. “The atmosphere is different because the people in the pod were just standing around, and nutrition was slightly different –just bare minimum.”

A highlight was his team members playing the Rocky theme tune on speakers outside, after the speakers in the capsule broke.

As for the landscape, he said “it’s one of those views you never get bored of.”

David has spent a lot of time raising funds for the children’s charity Merlin’s Magic Wand, a charity formed by Merlin Entertainments which helps to provide magical experiences to ill, disabled or disadvantaged children.

Singer-songwriter at Cafe Cairo

L

ondon singer-songwriter Alessi Laurent-Marke is playing at Clapham’s Café Cairo, following the launch of her latest single DLD (Door Light Dream), writes Laura Burgoine...

The single features on Alessi’s new album, Love is the Currency, produced by Mercury Prize nominated producer Jago Jago, and in collaboration with Felix and Will White of the Maccabees.

“I drum for a band called Shitsick based in south east London,” Alessi told the Weekender. “I’m from west London, we met working in Brixton Market together at Rejuvenate. I loved their music and even though their style is different, like poetry punk, the message is quite similar: love is the ultimate healer.”

Love is the currency is a body of work based on the limitless ability to heal one another through love, Alessi said. “It’s the first record that was biographical. It’s taken four records to get to this,” she said. “Before I was tied by the guise of nature, talking about things through trees and animals.

This is the time to talk about what it’s like to be desperately lonely in a relationship or cut off ties you feel in loyalty.”

It’s also the first record where Alessi has collaborated with another writer. “It happened through a Brixton meeting; I bumped into Felix White, he said ‘send me your demo’, then he suggested I reach out to his younger brother Will. They live in

The single DLD dropped on January 26, and Alessi is touring Japan in March. “Japanese audiences are so respectful. The way they move at a show is really beautiful; they’re massively into music. And they’re still really into CDs in Japan.”

The musician is following this with a US tour in spring, and some UK shows in May.

The performer started drumming aged 11 in the school band, then taught herself guitar. “My sister

had an acoustic guitar she left behind when she moved to uni.

It was probably out of tune for a good year. That led to songwriting.

And I play keyboard a bit.”

Belle de jour Having just hit one million streams on Spotify, Croydonbased Matt Belmont of band Belle Mt is bursting into the musical stratosphere, writes Jessica Aszkenasy...

The 29-year-old alt-folk singer, who has been compared to the likes of Bon Iver, has taken his music from Tooting to Los Angeles after teaming up with Grammy-winning music producer Femke Weidema.

Although he’s on his way up, he says that home is still his venue of choice.

“My favourite place to play has been Tooting Tram and Social,” Matt told the Weekender, “It’s full of all the people I know in London that have become family over the years.”

After performing in Nashville in early 2017, he shot off to Los Angeles last November to write music with South Korean singer Lexy and to showcase his music to promotors, securing a deal with LiveNation.

Matt’s music marries an atmospheric folk sound with pop beats. Despite the fact that he’s taking off in the US, the British music industry has been a harder nut to crack for the Sunderland-born singer.

“I’m finding that managers and agents over there are telling companies in London about me - companies that I may have approached in the past and didn’t respond! I love the British music industry because that’s what I was raised on, but you’ve gotta go where you’re making the most noise,” said Matt.

Even though his team are based in the US, Matt says he could never bring himself to leave London.

“Environments make you who you are as an artist. London’s gritty and not too shiny. I wouldn’t want to lose that,” he said.

His influences range from Bob Dylan to Alt-J to Mt. Wolf. He recalls first starting out and feeling like forces were often

working against him on stage.

“The worst time was when all of the strings on my guitar snapped one by one. I kept having to stop and apologise. At the end people were looking at me like who is this guy? When I busked, I had a guy spit in my case! It toughens you up.

Now everything that could ever go wrong has, I don’t get nervous before performing anymore. I feel like I can handle whatever happens.”

Matt plays at House of Tippler in East Dulwich every second Friday of the month and hosts an open-mic night at Tooting’s Tooting Tram and Social bar every Tuesday.

Brighton-based Kai Khan is a Malaysian artist taking musical inspiration from Disclosure to Katy B and George Maple.

Backed by a full band, Kai mashes up a fusion of electronic, soul and dance music.

ast Dulwich local Cameron Hall is launching a new film festival showcasing a series of movies that emulate the moods of the seasons.

Four Seasons Film Festival is taking place at Cadogan Hall on February 3 and 4, screening nine feature films and over 60 short films in a cultural weekend that will also boast live music performances, photography and art exhibitions.

Festival Founder and Director Cameron Hall said the Festival brings together film, art, music and photography. “We have been overwhelmed by the response to the festival, receiving 300 submissions from 40 counties around the world,” Cameron told the Weekender.

Screenings will also feature Q&As with film makers. The festival is offering up eight awards as part of a special presentation evening on Monday 5th February, which include awards for Best of Festival, Audience Favorite and Best Director.

Cameron, a keen skier, has the exclusive licence for screening the biggest and best ski films, and has been premiering Matchstick production company’s movies since 2014. “These films are very visually led, following the best skiers in beautiful terrains. They’re like spectacular music videos and sometimes there’s an important environmental message,” he said.

Four Seasons is a natural extension from this. “A lot of my business is around winter sports, and ski films and I didn’t want to lose complete connection with that, but rather keep that element within a bigger concept.”

The films are about different stages, moods, and experiences. “Hope and new beginnings for spring, the summer films are joyous, and autumn

is about change and transition,” Cameron said. “Some are literal.

In the summer section one film is a documentary all about drive-ins in America, following the journey of these people trying to keep alive a really old style projection in a digital era.”

Feature films to watch out for include Late Blossom Blues about a blues musician who gets discovered at the age of 81. Cameron highlights One year on a bike: “about a chap from Holland who cycles from Amsterdam to Singapore; it’s very much about

The tone is really upbeat, and it’s beautifully shot.”

The autumn film is Blue Hollywood, a London based filmmaker’s movie about a couple of aspiring actors who travel to LA and find it’s tougher than they realise.

Selling Isabel, which won an award at Raindance film festival, is based on a true story of a woman who was kidnapped and held up as a sex slave and her body was sold, in London’s Harley Street. “She plays herself in the film. She wanted to make a

film about her story to highlight this is a real issue,” Cameron said. “It’s harrowing but a well told, well acted, very considered and thoughtful film.”

There’s also a couple of ski films in the mix, and a smorgasbord of shorts.

“It’s all in one venue. Any ticket provides access to the short film screening room, and exhibitions, and if you buy an individual feature ticket you can hang out all day and listen to music,” Cameron said.

“In the world in which we live in now it’s very easy for people to make

films. That means there’s much more content than ever before but it’s still difficult to get that recognition,” Cameron said. “We’ve come into that circuit to create more of a platform for filmmakers. It’s all independent filmmakers.”

The Horror from Rotherhithe

Like Dick Whittington, and many others, Brian Barnes ran away to find his fortune in London, writes Michael Holland...

“I found Guildford a bit too sleepy and my job in Argos less than stimulating,” he tells the Weekender.

“One day, I met someone who

invited me to dinner at their place in Greenland Dock and I discovered a whole area that I had never heard of before. I decided to move here as soon as I could and I love it! The vibe and amenities of this part of London are really special. I have a view over Canary Wharf from my flat and at night it makes me feel like I am living in Blade Runner! Southwark Park is my new favourite green space in London, the Mayflower pub has a magical atmosphere and I actually prefer the Canada Water library to the British Library.”

Since Brian arrived in Rotherhithe his life has changed dramatically and he now has a West End screening of his first feature film.

The film-maker grew up in Hong Kong with a father who shot a lot of Super 8 film: “I always wanted to have a play with his camera, but he would never let me touch it. I think my desire to make films stems in part

from that frustration as a 5-year-old!”

Years later Brian took that desire and joined the University College London film-making society. He recalls Christopher Nolan being a member of that club. “We used to help each other out with our films and learn from each other.” After UCL he went to the Royal College of Art Film School.

“I loved it there as they didn’t teach us, they just provided an environment for us to design our own learning programmes. It made us very selfsufficient and we all moved into the industry pretty swiftly from the RCA.” Brian moved into making corporate videos and short films, and has won many awards for his shorts.

After the training and student life was over real life arrived with the hardships that often tag along.

Talking of his early days Brian says.

“Filmmaking is the most expensive art form there is, yet most filmmakers are among the poorest people you’ll

meet, living hand-to-mouth much of the time. Filmmaking is kind of like a “habit” - whenever I have any spare cash, I make another short. As a result, it’s taken me 30 years to make a feature film.”

But the director got there eventually. His film, the Redeeming, is a psychological thriller about a disturbed single mother having to confront a mysterious stranger to protect her home, but her struggle to hold onto her sanity could be the end of them both. I asked about this specific genre. “I’ve always found gore horror dull, but I’ve always been mesmerised by the power of psychological horror and psychothriller stories. Films like Cat People, Shock Corridor and Scream of Fear haunted me for years after watching them. I loved that feeling and I wanted to make something that had that power myself.”

Filmed partly by candlelight

during the worst storms the UK had experienced in two decades, cast and crew were trapped in a remote Somerset farmhouse with rising floodwaters cutting them off physically and mentally. They channeled this isolation and disturbed atmosphere to create the intense claustrophobia of the film.

The West End premiere is open to all and Brian tells Weekender readers: ‘”We’ll all be dressing up in our posh frocks and best bibs and tuckers and parading in front of the flashbulbs.

Come and rub shoulders with the stars and see a new film at our special screening.”

I might just do that.

he National theatre’s current production of Pinocchio is a must-see, regardless of your age, or attitude towards puppets, writes Laura Burgoine...

If ever a story has stood the test of time it’s this one. Pinocchio was made in 1940; it was Walt Disney’s second animated feature film after Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, based on the much darker Italian children’s novel by Carlo Collodi.

Dennis Kelly’s stage adaptation uses the original songs and score from the Disney movie, and they’re even more magical live. Iconic songs like I’ve Got No Strings, HiDiddle-Dee-Dee (an Actor’s Life for Me), and When you Wish upon a Star are performed with high octane, stunning choreography.

The story follows childless puppet-maker Geppetto who carves a wooden puppet called Pinocchio, brought to life by a blue fairy. Desperate to become a real boy, Pinocchio must learn to be brave, honest, and unselfish but is lead astray by a series of unsavoury characters. Whenever he lies, Pinocchio’s nose grows.

Joe Idris-Roberts is excellent as Pinocchio, moving with what must be frustrating restraint for such a fine physical performer. He moves as though made of wood, jerky and mechanical with boyish energy. The dance numbers are spectacular, and funny, and you’ll be singing the songs for days afterwards. The entire cast is stellar; Mark Hadfield delivers a beautiful, sensitive portrayal of Geppetto, the Fox is played by deliciously devilish David Langham, whose lands every one-

But this is Pater Shaffer’s version of two real people in his fictitious Amadeus, writes Michael Holland...

A stark set and bare lighting puts the dying Salieri in the shadows as he teases us with his ‘did I didn’t I’ tales, drawing us into his intrigue.

The stage then comes alive with colour and music as we travel back to 18th century Vienna and a young Mozart creating a storm with his concertos and operas.

Salieri becomes our narrator to life at the Emperor’s court, introducing us to the main players and giving us snippets of information about Mozart. By the time we actually get to meet Amadeus there is nothing but surprise when he

Over time we see Salieri beaten down by Mozart’s genius, but due to his position at court he is

able to hinder his rival’s progress, leaving Amadeus and his family almost destitute. He recruits his peers to keep Mozart down while all the time pretending he is a friend to Mozart, that he is trying to further Mozart’s career, that

he will find him rich students to teach. And all the time that Salieri has his own lucrative position as Court Composer he also knows that Mozart’s music makes his own work mediocre. Ultimately he blames God for not giving him ‘one good

The acting is superb. Lucian Msamati’s Salieri stalks the stage at all times, and every aspect of Mozart’s existence, in an amazing performance. Adam Gillen as Amadeus crackles and fizzes in the role. Michael Longhurt’s direction perhaps even betters the performances. While the live on stage music provides glimpses of his genius, the set and lighting create the diminuendos and crescendos of Mozart’s life and unexplained death. There is no Magic Flute, no Marriage of Figaro or Così fan tutte for Salieri. Salieri, ultimately, is remembered only for his connection to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Converted from the old multi-storey car park behind Peckham Plex, Peckham Levels is a new space providing cheap premises for creative businesses, bars and restaurants to set up shop, writes Alex Daniel...

Violin-makers, Californian cuisine, and Hao Hao Chi’s first permanent home at the new Peckham pop-up park

For the next six years, the temporary project will house artists, craftspeople and business owners from the area, providing an opportunity for small creative ventures to find their feet. Floors 5 and 6 are open to the general public, providing food and drink, entertainment and more, while the other levels act as workplaces for members of the community getting their work off the ground. Here’s a run-down of what you’ll find in the old car park.

Picky Wops Thought pizza wasn’t for vegans?

Think again. Picky Wops sets itself apart from Peckham’s many pizzerias by offering a menu which is entirely free of animal products. After co-owner Cristiano went vegan in early 2017, the restaurant’s animal-free menu came about in April last year. With toppings as varied as smokey coconut mozzarella and cashew nut camembert, this is one for the adventurous pizza connoisseur.

Near and Far bar This cocktail bar makes the most of its setting with panoramic views of the London skyline from its window seating. Inspired by a “Peckham meets Palm Springs” aesthetic featuring palm trees and disco balls, they serve a quirky mixture of local ingredients and global imports.

Drums and Flats Drums and Flats was born out of two blokes’ love for chicken wings.

Andreas Hudelmayer Andreas Hudelmayer makes violins, violas and cellos from his studio in the Levels, and was the first artist to sign for the project. Andreas harks from South Germany, where he was brought up in a musical family. After moving to the UK he studied at the Newark School of Violin Making, before working in Berlin and then back in London.

winning sketch show Cardinal Burns, and as part of comedy trio Clever Peter on BBC Radio 4’s Strap In – It’s Clever Peter! back in 2012, this is his first time going solo.

“I wanted to do a one-person show to see if I could get the kind of pace and dynamism that we had as a threesome. It’s quite an ambitious idea,” Hartley told the Weekender.

The show marries theatrical sheriff gunfights with a love story and a comedic twist. After trying his hand at a western, Hartley said he would like to venture into the realms of space and Robin Hood for his next production.

Based in Clapham North, the Birmingham comedian often tests his material at the Cavendish Arms in Stockwell. He chose the Vault to premier Gun for its warm community atmosphere.

“It has an old school festival feel with a community ethos to it. It’s the kind of festival where people are interested in other people’s work. I’m looking forward to being part of that.”

Finding The Lost Daughters

Jeanne Whitemee is the author of over 40 novels and short stories. She started out as an actress, before realising her ambition of becoming a fulltime writer.

The Lost Daughters chronicles the intertwining lives of two young women in 1950s England, whose lives are beset by personal loss, and their remarkable journey to the capital, to exceed the expectations of their gender and embark upon remarkable business ventures.

How did you come up with the idea for The Lost Daughters?

And why did you decide to start the story in 1955?

I’m always fascinated by the way a meeting between two people can influence their lives and I think that the 1950s was an interesting decade – a world struggling to reshape itself after WW2.

Although they occasionally meet, Cathy and Rosalind tell their own separate stories.

What made you decide to have two protagonists instead of just one?

The two girls come from totally different backgrounds and yet

their early friendship establishes a firm relationship. I thought it was fascinating to tell their very different stories separately and show how their paths cross in spite of their different circumstances.

drama school and progressed to a career in the theatre. All of my characters are the product of my own creation, although sometimes their behaviour and idiosyncrasies are based on people I have met.

So The Lost Daughters is mainly set in London, with later chapters in Suffolk. What made you choose Edgware specifically as a location?

Which aspect of the book did you have to do the most research for?

My father was a Londoner so I do have connections in London. I also have friends in the suburbs so locations like Edgware and Burnt Oak are familiar to me. I lived in Suffolk for three years, so that county is one I know well.

Was the theatre theme influenced by your own time in theatre? If so, have you ever met anyone like Rosalind’s fame-hungry mother Una?

Yes, I used my own knowledge of the theatre and members of the acting profession as research for this story. I grew up in that world as my father was a musician (pianist) and musical director in a repertory theatre in the Midlands. Probably influenced by this, I later attended

Probably the hotel business, although I do have some experience of running a hotel as my grandparents owned and ran a small hotel in my early years.

What advice would you give someone looking to write their debut historical fiction novel?

Embarking on a historical novel is a serious undertaking and should not be undertaken lightly, because a lot of readers trust what they read as a true picture of life in that particular era, even though it is a work of fiction. The age-old advice is ‘Write about what you know’, and this is sound advice, but if an author wants to write about a longer bygone age, then thorough research is essential.

Read all you can on the period and subject. Make notes – visit places and locations if you can – check on costume and hairstyles of the

period – the kind of food eaten and the speech used, i.e. do not use present day slang such as ‘OK’, or ‘fashionable’ phrases like ‘any time soon’. On the other hand, speech changes all the time so don’t get bogged down by it and certainly don’t pepper your work with words like ‘gadsooks’ etc. Remember that your work must be readable. A pinch of atmosphere is better than a shovel full of authenticity. The most important aspects are the story and the people, and if you get them right, you’ll have a ‘page turner’ and that’s what you’re aiming for.

As the UK’s only black history museum, the Black Cultural Archive’s collection spans over three centuries with artefacts that tell fascinating historical narratives. 2018 marks the 70th anniversary of the Windrush generations’ arrival in Britain.

he Hope & Anchor is a huge Youngs pub with an even huger garden area. Their pizzas and burgers seemingly follow the same XXL pattern, writes Michael Holland...

After its recent refurb the pub has come back bigger and better in all areas. The massive garden has been tented over for the winter and beach huts have been arranged in a circle that can be rented for private gatherings.

Inside the huts are all the home comforts you need (heat and TV for sporting events or music videos). This outside space will be even more amazing in the summer when the roof can be lifted off.

I wasn’t there to check out the refurb but to check out the food with my favourite pint-sized Print and Digital Consultant, Michelle.

My favourite because she didn’t mess about; she got straight to work by ordering herself a Passionfruit martini before going outside for a fag - and to inspect and report back on the garden area. She’s also a favourite because I can call her Meesh and she returns the compliment by calling me Moosh.

f you ask me, sourdough pizzas and craft beer is what made Hackney famous and this fail-proof combination is making its way down south of the river, to our neck of the woods, writes Gabi Gheerbrant...

As we sit down behind wooden tables in Nunhead’s Four Hundred Rabbits restaurant, I could swear we are in some trendy canal-facing warehouse conversion in east London. We share the space with a bunch of cool kids who dye their own hair, roll up their slouchy chinos and, to the sounds of Radiohead, lazily devour their orders, slice after slice and sip after sip.

Four Hundred Rabbits is for those who don’t want to settle for a simple Margarita. To begin with, the sourdough base is fermented for at least 48 hours before it is cooked in a wood fired oven, making it lighter and easier to digest but with a deeper flavour and that special tang typical to sourdough. Start by picking your star ingredient, like goat’s cheese, anchovies, beef mince or chorizo but expect new flavour combinations as traditional Italian staples mix with seasonal British

get a bite, and that was hard work too. Eventually we managed to eat most of the burger and most of the pizza and had a good go at the Dirty Fries, one of Michelle’s choices that involved some odd, Quaver-like offerings with pulled pork on top, then a dollop of hot, creamy cheese and a squidge of ketchup. It was more like a main meal than the side order that it was advertised as, and try as we might we couldn’t make a dent in that bad boy.

There was no way we were going for a dessert after that lot, although they did look tempting.

We finished off our drinks, chatted with the friendly staff and then headed off into the night after having an enjoyable couple of hours in a pub that delivers exactly what its clientele needs.

the damage in the pumps but I opted for the Camden Pale Ale, a lively brew that is quite citrussy and invigorating, and perfect for the pizza and burgers. But first we had the Fish and Chip Shop Sharing Platter, a big mix of fried delights that entailed: mini battered cod, pork pie, tartar sauce, crab fritters, fish cake and excellent Triple Cooked Chips. I think the pork pie must’ve escaped on the way to the table because it was not to be found, and we couldn’t work out what was crab fritter and what was

fish cake, but the platter did its job for me. Beer with fish and chips is always a winner.

After an interval where Meesh took selfies and chatted with the staff, our main courses came.

The Spiced chicken, spring onion, goats cheese and chilli pizza was created atop the Hope & Anchor’s own sourdough base. It is a thin, crispy base that allowed the topping to take centre stage, though, for me, it was a little too crispy. Michelle, on the other hand, declared it was perfect in

her own inimitable way: “That pizza was cushty, Moosh.”

We also shared the Classic burger. This was a piece of work that you needed two hands to deal with and was constructed by placing a prime British beef burger, ale onions, cheddar cheese, shredded lettuce, ketchup, mayo and pickles in a bun. We tried cutting the beast into sections in order to get a grip on it, but that didn’t help much.

Love for the two is clearly the pushing engine behind the concept that now has established in Nunhead and Crystal Palace.

What a fitting brand foundation, I think, emerging at a perfect time to ride the trend wave of fermented foods and adding our neighborhood to the hangout map for hipsters too cool for Hackney.

rue to form, December had a mix of cold, freezing conditions but as Christmas approached changed to misty, wet and milder weather. January can be the coldest month - snow and ice often push into southern areas; but this depends on the weather systems coming in from the Atlantic.

If the weather is co-operative - a variety of planting can be done; new hedging shrubs/trees if needed, displays of heathers to brighten areas of the garden. Fruit and deciduous trees including roses plus evergreen shrubs are planted during January when growth is at a standstill. But if conditions are freezing or very wet, planting will have to be postponed.

Christmas houseplants will need some attention; they are often neglected during the festivities, then begin to look a little sad – and are thrown away in January. But with a little care and attention they make cheerful

additions to a permanent plant collection. Azaleas prefer cool conditions and can live outside in containers. These plants need ericaceous compost (available at garden centres) and they dislike tap water - which eventually turns their leaves yellow; use rainwater or filtered water and Azaleas will be happier. Allow Hyacinth foliage to die back naturally after flowering; water sparingly, this will allow the bulb to build up the energy required to flower next year; plant in the garden or window box. Poinsettias can be more of a challenge and need to be kept inside - out of drafts and direct sunlight. Top up with fresh compost, keep moist but do not over water (in winter); the Poinsettia should survive as a handsome green foliage houseplant – it eventually loses its red leaves (bracts).
