big band jazz

going strong at the hideaway Laura Burgoine

D

ubbed Britain’s Michael Bublé, Mark Kingswood traverses the globe with his brand of big band jazz. Now, he brings his new album to Streatham’s Hideaway jazz club. The singer’s debut album, Strong, has recently been re-released in the UK. “It’s 50 years since Frank Sinatra released the My Way album, which I felt was the perfect opportunity to build a one-off night at the Hideaway,” Mark said. “We wanted to brand it half and half so it’s Frank Sinatra music with Strong as well.” The album was made two years ago and released in Canada as Mark is signed to a Montreal-based record label; he divides his time between Canada and the UK. “The hardest thing for me about Montreal is the language barrier,” he said. “But it’s a fantastic music scene and they’ve been really adoptive.” He’s even had UK fans fly to Montreal to see him perform. This month Mark is touring the UK with Jools Holland. “It’s a great opportunity. I’m very lucky to be invited on the tour,” he said. “Jools and I are jazzy, bluesy, from a similar world. We’re both inspired by real musicians.” Having just finished the production stage of his second album, including filming videos, Mark is looking forward to spending more time on home soil. “I’m coming back to the UK at the end of year and doing some bigger shows. It’s so easy to get your music out there now with the internet.” Growing up in Kent, Mark performed his first show at age eight. “My parents put me up for this talent show and I won the competition,” he said. “I had no training. I sang Unchained Melody. I’ve always been an old soul. I got the bug then and there. That was it. I knew from that minute that this is what I was going to do.” By 14, Mark was gigging at pubs and clubs before taking a backseat and learning the other side of the industry: producing, songwriting and sound engineering. “In my late teens, early 20s, I fell much more into that role. I was behind the glass in the studios,” he said. It was while he was working with a guy signed to Hollywood Records that Mark got a call from Disney to produce songs for Miley Cyrus’ Hannah Montana soundtrack, which went on to be a platinum seller. Mark has now returned to his roots. “In my 20s-30s I was singing music that made me happy: jazz and swing.” “Strong is me as a singer, songwriter, engineer, producer. You’re hearing all me.” Strong is out on June 21. Mark is at the Hideaway Jazz Club, 2 Empire Mews, Stanthorpe Road, SW16 2BF, on June 7 at 9pm. Admission: £15. chasing the american dream Michael Holland

A

rthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman has been done many times but rarely, if ever, with the Lomans as a black family. This one change completely alters the original narrative of a man - Willy Loman - desperately seeking his American Dream at the expense of losing his family. With this casting, Marianne Elliott and Miranda Cromwell’s production immediately adds tacit connotations of slave history, racism and another barrier to success at work. Willy’s dream of financial success after years of aiming for the top of his travelling salesman tree makes him just a shell of the man he once was, and finally results in utter disillusionment. His constant thoughts of money, while sacrificing himself, eventually lead to his demise. It is only in the flashback scenes that he can be seen as a proud, straightbacked man, a hero to his two boys and long-suffering wife Linda. Willy’s sons, Happy and Biff, are very different in character but also very much brotherly. Their early father-son relationship sours over time as they cannot live up to his expectations and see him take out his anger on their mum. The house, just a final mortgage payment away from being owned outright, has become a prison for them all in this slowburn, brooding and dark play. Performances are excellent, and the clever set allows us to look back in time through windows, but there is a lot of inaction covered by too much shouting and too many words. It was like listening to the family next door having a row but with memorable phrases instead of abusive swearing. And if you are not comfortable with people talking to ghosts and the ghosts talking back, then you’ll be as indifferent as I am about this Death of a Salesman. Death of a Salesman is on at The Young Vic, The Cut, SE1 until July 13 at 7:30pm with 2:30pm matiness. Admission: £10 - £40. Phone: 0207 922 2922. www.youngvic.org

O

ne Henry was never going to be enough when I could have three, and having no sense of balance I thought it would be a great idea to go ‘once more unto the breach’ and watch all of Shakespeare’s Henrys in an all-day marathon put on for the press. I’m not sure what’s more bizarre, me watching all three or the cast who played multiple roles in this 12-hour extravaganza. In Henry IV part 1 the focus is on the young Prince Hal and his relationship with Falstaff. This association is causing King Henry distress as he worries about the impact the braggart Falstaff and his cronies have on Hal. “Why can’t Hal be more like Hotspur with his princely qualities?” asks Henry, as Wales, Scotland and Northumberland rebel against the sickly King, who believes Hal is wasting his time with the drunken troupe at the Boar’s Head Tavern. Prince Hal, eloquently played by Sarah Amankwah, gives weight and growth throughout the three plays. Not a word is spilt when she speaks. The fast talking, scheming Falstaff - almost an ‘Ab Fab’ character - worked well and had the audience in stitches in the capable hands of Helen Schlesinger, a powerhouse

THREE’S A CROWN IN Shakespeare marathon Susan Hallissey

of energy. The Gadshill robbery scene was amongst the most hilarious. Michelle Terry’s Hotspur also kept us on our toes with her vibrancy and fast paced wit. As we move to Henry IV part 2 Hal begins to mature and move away from Falstaff. While he is crowned King he denies all knowledge of his old friend: “I know thee not, old man” - breaking Falstaff’s heart, and mine! A shout out to Sophie Russell as Shallow, whose interaction with Falstaff was genius. In Henry V, Sarah Amankwah is now the assured King and her voice was crystal clear as England and France prepared for battle. The tennis ball scene provided a

14

glint of Henry’s growing confidence, with Amankwah providing much in this scene with only her eyes. No Falstaff here, however, Colin Hurley as Katherine (amongst others) and Steffan Donnelly as Captain Fluellen, provided the laugh out loud moments. Welcome relief in the height of war, and the battle of Agincourt. Purists may not be happy with the role reversals but power to the women who played these parts. The Globe reaches out to a wider audience regarding accessibility and Shakespeare is shaken up once again in these productions. I hope the allure of diversity reaches far and wide. What an amazing feat for the actors who rightly received a standing ovation at the day’s end. As the finale came to a close with a boisterous drumming scene, the actors seemed to leap for joy while exiting the stage! I hope they enjoyed the big bold productions as much as I did! Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood, and go and enjoy one or all of these. They are awesome! All playing at Shakespeare’s Globe, Bankside, SE1, until October 11. Admission: £5 - £47. The world’s finest Photo 3D figurines Made in Bermondsey – with High-Tech and Love

m

y3Dtwin was founded by two brothers who wanted to change the way we preserve our dearest memories. In the summer of 2011, they began toying with 3D scanning, not having the faintest idea it would take them to the industry leading level they are today. After many months of tinkering and experimenting in their garage, they started to build their first photogrammetry rig right in the middle of the living room floor! Using only 28 DSLR cameras initially, they were only able to capture a limited quality, but it was enough to fuel the passion that they still have today. They went back to the drawing board to develop their technique further. Once the scanner moved from being a prototype to a fully fledged photogrammetry studio, the next step was to develop the proprietary software they needed to bring these 2D pictures into a high-quality 3D model. After countless sleepless nights in development, the concept became a reality. All that was left was to bring the digital 3D model into the

physical world. After intense research, testing and many samples, they found the right machine for the job. Excited by the possibilities of the technology, brothers had their first prototype 3d printed. It was magical how lifelike they were even at that stage. That was the day, in June of 2013 that my3Dtwin was born. Today they have their very own state of the art photogrammetry studio in the heart of London complete with 64 high-resolution DSLR cameras and 24 softboxes. They manage all stages of development and production in

their little space and continuously strive to improve the detail and photorealistic quality of the figurines. Food & drink

It would be Rude not to pay them a visit By Michael Holland

I

had heard Vanessa Feltz singing its praises on her radio shows so I was very excited about reviewing Rude ’n’ Boomin’, the new health-focused sandwich and juice shop in Walworth. I’d also heard whispers of various music legends spotted there. Rude ’n’ Boomin’ is the brainchild of cousins Colin Webb, who lived in New Zealand for 12 years, where he and wife Esther owned and operated the world famous Cereal Killa Cafe in Auckland, and Kieran McDonagh, a legend in the m usic industry who has travelled the world working with the likes of Mark Ronson, Skepta, Olly Murs, and Professor Green. Me and lunching partner Fiona rocked up at midday just in time to talk to the cousins’ coffee guy from Ozone in Shoreditch who spoke of how he sends a team to coffee-growing countries each year to seek out and bring back the best beans. Timed to perfection, a Piccolo was laid before me (like a small flat white), which was creamy and soothing. Then, realising I was serious, a double hit of coffee was brought to me, which put every one of my reflexes on high alert. Fiona wimped out with a large mug of creamy, milky coffee that she absolutely loved. It was good sitting around with the family (Colin’s black-cab

driver brother came in for his lunch) listening to the boys talk about how their lives led them to this moment. A huge mural of contemporary music stars filled a whole wall next to where we sat and cool tunes played in the background creating a good vibe. Kieran talked about his friends from the music industry popping in regularly, while Colin spoke of his experiences Down Under. “Esther has 20 years’ experience as a chef and food consultant, and she believes in providing the best product she can, sourcing only the finest and freshest ingredients… We make our amazing paleo granola on-site and we source our bespoke bread from the award winning Olivier’s Bakery at Borough market.” We tried a bit of the ‘amazing’ granola and both agreed it was pretty special. I felt that it had life-affirming qualities but what do I know about cereal and grain? I should have got a quote off Fiona, who does know about these things. After perusing the menu she chose the Spicy Chick: a smashed chickpea, avocado, celery, almond, red onion, dill, chili and tomato sandwich, and was really impressed. I was going for the Hot Stepper (Kashmiri chicken, red onion and sour cream) but too many people said I should go for the

Rude Reuben, the SE London take on the New York classic. In Rude ’n’ Boomin’ it comes with mustard, pastrami, sauerkraut, pickles and Swiss cheese, so I knew nothing could go wrong with that combo - and I was right. Between the team they had me thinking about the ‘crunch’ in the toasted sourdough bread, the excitement when the pickle kicks in, the subtlety of the mustard. This was proper eating with the mind connected to the taste buds, not merely munching away without thinking, while checking your phone for likes and retweets. Their passion for food became my passion. Both Fiona and I were done in after those toasted pieces of art. We couldn’t even manage one of the shakes and smoothies that sounded delicious. After saying our goodbyes and promising to return we journeyed home discussing the highlights of our lunch. It was all one big highlight.

Care boss raises £1K for Healthy Living Club after completing the 3 Peaks Challenge

T

ony O’Flaherty, owner of Home Instead Senior Care Wandsworth, Lambeth & Dulwich, has raised £1,000 for a dementia café after completing the National Three Peaks Challenge. The Three Peaks Challenge involves climbing Snowdon, Scafell Pike, and Ben Nevis, the three highest peaks in the UK, often within 24 hours. The total walking distance is 23 miles (37km) and the total ascent is 3064 metres (10,052ft). For Tony, taking on the challenge was daunting but he did it in support of a weekly dementia café which takes place at the Healthy Living Club in Lambeth. He feels passionately about supporting those living with dementia and for this particular challenge, he raised crucial funds for this local, and very popular dementia café. A dementia café is a place where people living with

dementia can go to socialise in an informal setting, and feel comfortable and supported. The café provides an opportunity for anyone with memory loss or dementia, their carers, friends and family members, and others just looking for company, to come to meet and relax. Tony explained, “It was an intimidating task to take on, but I was determined to complete the challenge within 24 hours. Thankfully, I managed to complete all 3 mountains in 23 hours and 37 minutes, and I am so pleased to have raised a significant amount for The Healthy Living Club’s dementia cafe.” Christine Landreth, Community Development Worker at the Healthy Living Club commented on Tony’s success, saying, “Wow that really is an amazing achievement! Many congratulations on completing your 3 peaks challenge - what a fabulous and impressive

Homes MARKET COMMENT Graham Lawes Director of Residential South East JLL

Location and space ar Lovell Homes’ launch

The south east London property market continues to gain traction, with healthy levels of viewings throughout the week, not just at the weekends. Viewings over the Bank Holidays can be a bit hit and miss, especially when the sun is shining; but I’m encouraged by the level of motivated buyers actively looking to purchase at all price points. Often the perception of how well the agent is performing is often based on how many viewings the property is getting. Whilst I do agree with this perception, it really comes down to the quality of viewer and the pre-qualification process, how the viewing is set up and the staging of the property. Buyers need to be given time to view the property and the viewing needs to be conducted by a senior member of the agency team – someone who is not just knowledgeable about the property but the area as a whole. Buyers, as well as sellers, need to trust their agent and feel that the advice and information they are receiving is accurate and true, without those stereotypical and arduous sales pitches. At JLL, we ensure the customer’s journey is as seamless and enjoyable as possible, and rest assured that if there are any bumps along the way we’ll be on hand to iron out the issues.

L

ovell Homes is expecting unprecedented demand for the long awaited launch of its new phase at Trinity Walk in Woolwich. Location is at the heart of this architect-designed development with the new Crossrail station located just a mile away allowing commuters a seven minute journey into central London. After the fantastic success on phase one, they are delighted to announce the launch of

the second phase of their development that will consist of a stunning collection of one, two and three bedroom apartments, with some of them being impressive duplexes. The apartment buildings have been carefully designed to create a strong visual impact, accentuated with sensitive design details to provide a sense of individuality and style. Each new home has been built to maximise space and light as well

36

as being finished with a high specification to ensure high levels of comfort, security and quality. Stuart Gibbons, managing director of Lovell Homes, said: “We are looking forward to our launch showcase of our new phase at Trinity Walk. Buyers will be impressed with the space our apartments offer. All homes have been built to larger than normal standards which sets Trinity Walk apart from other new build developments in the area.”

The interiors are striking. Buyers can expect high gloss kitchens, with most fitted with fully integrated appliances. Each home also boasts contemporary white bathrooms suites and flooring throughout. Prices start from £350,000 and with Help to Buy available on all homes under £600,000, Lovell Homes are expecting a high demand on this popular scheme. www.trinitywalk-woolwich.com/

Avoid fines, get a tax break, and prepare for the new landlord laws with this Bermondsey estate agency If you’re a landlord you need an informed and cost effective agency. Independent London set up a Central London office in 2008 to try to bridge the gap between High Street agents and Internet advertising options. Since then they’ve established themselves as a landlord friendly, knowledgeable and reliable Estate Agency using a fair fee structure and the latest technology to enhance the landlord’s experience. They stay on the edge of technology and were using online signing back then in 2008 when nobody else was. As of June 1st the Government is banning all fees to tenants. This means that your estate agent will no longer be allowed to charge administration fees to tenants moving into a property. They cannot charge for references or a check in or a check out. Do you know exactly what the Tenant Fee Ban means to you? Is your letting agent passing on the fees to you? Has the Government relabelled Tenants Fees and called them Landlord Fees? Independent London is taking a pragmatic approach to the Fee ban. If you are confused by what your agent is telling you then call Independent London now for free advice and information regarding the ban. Does your property need an additional House in Multiple Occupation (HMO) licence? Southwark council requires a licence for a property with three unrelated tenants. Even a couple and a single person living in a two-bedroom property would require an additional HMO licence. Are you legal? Is your tenancy legal? Ask the experts at Independent London and you could avoid a large fine. The agency is also experienced in winding down HMOs and finding families to rent larger properties, thus avoiding the requirement for an HMO Licence. Do you know how to set up a Special Purchase Vehicle to buy your investment property with a Limited Company so you can claim mortgage interest back in your tax return? Could you qualify and incorporate your property portfolio? This could save a landlord with five properties or more thousands in tax and stamp duty. Giving landlords expert advice is what Independent prides itself on. There are plenty

of low fee charging run of the mill agencies out there taking fees for with little or no experience in the industry. Independent London backs up their experience with: • A legal mentor • Cast iron contracts • Up to the minute paperwork backed by software providers Goodlord and Painsmith Solicitors. This provides peace of mind for the agency and its clients. Everything is done online to save time and money. Tenants are given all legal documents at the start of the tenancy including the gas certificate, Energy Performance Certificate, the Deposit Scheme Prescribed Information, all of which they’re required to sign as part of their Tenancy Agreement. Independent currently has no rent arrears on their whole managed portfolio. They provide an online log in portal for landlords at no extra cost, which means landlords have access to their accounts and paperwork at the touch of a button. No need to call or chase for a missing invoice. Independent can also provide an end of year tax roundup for your accountant. The agency understands the challenges facing landlords in the modern lettings industry because they are landlords. Their objective is to save landlords money at every turn while guarding them always against punitive aggressive litigation from current or former tenants. If you feel like you are not being properly advised or that you are paying too much tax or you simply don’t understand recent legislation or how it will affect your property or your income the give Independent London a call. Independent charges 5 percent for a let-only service and an additional 5 percent monthly for management service. Independent London is at Studio 1, 197 Long Lane, SE1 4PD.
