Drag through the years
he world of Drag has received something of a renaissance over the last few years; with the phenomenal success of the

American Television show RuPaul’s Drag Race bringing the art to the forefront of popular culture. It’s not something new for the
residents of Greenwich however, with the vibrant art scene in the borough providing the perfect place for Queens to showcase their work. Greenwich has also become the home of one of the most acclaimed drag stars in London, Velma Celli who, as the resident Drag artist at both the Pelton Arms in Greenwich and the White Swan in Charlton, is a bit of a celebrity chanteuse in the area. Velma Celli began her journey into Drag by complete accident however, as her alter ego Ian Stoughair first started his career on the stage as a ballet dancer. After forging a successful vocation in musical theatre – Ian played the coveted role of Angel in the cult musical Rent and Mary Sunshine in Chicago opposite Jerry Springer – the dancer took a turn into the art of Drag after a fortuitous visit to the famed Soho cabaret club, Madame Jojo’s. “I was given a mic and I sang,” Ian told me when I caught up with him during preparations for a new show at Underbelly Festival next month. After being impressed by his somewhat inebriated first performance, Madame Jojos offered Ian a regular performance spot and so Velma Celli was born. “I did the show at Madame JoJos for two years and the rest is history,” Ian explained and the unusual opportunity marked a turning point in the performer’s life, as he went on to enjoy a hugely successful international career in both film and television as well as on stage, including an appearance in the BBC soap opera Eastenders. It’s meant Ian has spent a large
chunk of the past few years as the beloved diva, whose identity was formed rather than invented. “It’s odd really, because as much as it is a persona, it’s just a heightened version of me. I don’t really put on a character,” Ian Explains, “She has way more confidence than I do, but it’s just a much more fierce and confident version of myself.” For her new show entitled Iconic: A Brief History of Drag, Velma Celli is looking back on some of the most legendary moments in Drag over the last century. “Iconic has a story line which is about the famous and iconic moments in Drag. It’s your Rocky Horror; it’s your Bowie, Queen’s ‘I Want to Break Free’. It has an arc.” The idea for the show came about after Ian took a trip to New York, “I went to Stonewall Bar (which the famous LGBT charity is named after) a few years ago.” Ian explained that an elderly bartender had given him a history lesson on the riots in the East Village, which led to gay liberation and the formation of Stonewall. “Learning about that was lovely.” Ian also investigated some of the most famous British drag artists, including Danny La Rue and Lilly Savage, but he had a particular interest in finding out about the inspiration behind one of the rock group, Queen’s legendary music videos. “One of my earliest memories of drag was Freddie Mercury in a leather skirt in
the I Want to Break Free video. I wrote to the lovely Brian May and asked him the reason behind it. He sent me the longest email ever telling me what it was about, so it was lovely doing all those bits of research.” Ian’s Velma Celli commands a huge following and is noted as one of the top Drag artists in the capital due to her glorious vocal ability. She recently performed a sold-out show at the acclaimed cabaret club, Live at Zedel in Piccadilly to celebrate Pride and continues to be in great demand on the circuit. Her unrelenting accomplishments also mean stars are lining up to take guest spots in her shows and for the one-nightonly gig at Underbelly Festival, Velma Celli will be joined by former EastEnders co-star Jessie Wallace and West End superstar Kerry Ellis. “Jessie [Wallace] and I met on the set of Eastenders when I did my guest spot. We got on like a house on fire and have been great mates ever since. She’s got a cracking voice, which a lot of people don’t know about.” Ian also illuminates me with a little exclusive for fans to look forward to, “They [Jessie Wallace and Kerry Ellis] are both going to be dressed in a way that you might not have seen them before.” Velma Celli continues to enthral audiences throughout the borough with her regular shows at the Pelton Arms and the White Swan and will be performing Iconic: A Brief History of Drag at Underbelly Festival on 8 August. www.underbellyfestival.com

Ebb and flow of life by the sea
T
here's something so calming about looking out to sea; the rhythmic movement of the waves and the sand beneath your feet evoke feelings of tranquility no matter what the weather. Alex Howarth's production of We Live By the Sea – which opened at Greenwich Theatre last week after a plethora of celebrated performances at Edinburgh, in the West End and Off-Broadway - tells the story of a young girl's affinity

with the coastline in a deeply touching and insightful piece of stagecraft. Katy is 15 and has autism, so crowds and loud noises are a source of great distress. Much like in Mark Haddon’s seminal work, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime (which was made into a smash hit stage show by the National Theatre), we are guided through the story from Katy’s perspective and the result is a hard-hitting but nevertheless

heartwarming tale performed with absolute ardor by an excellent cast. It's been a difficult year and Katy, along with her imaginary dog Paul Williams (played with unremitting energy by Lizzie Grace) and sister Hannah (given a haunted humility by Alexandra Simonet) have relied upon their visits to the beach as a grounding point in times of turmoil. When a new neighbour, a charming young man called Ryan (the affable Tom Coliandris)
comes on the scene, the dynamic of the little family is changed, as secrets are revealed and lives laid bare. An evocative soundtrack provided by the three-piece band - adds to the overall ambiance and some delightful video projections (by Will Monks), give us all the soothing feeling that we are looking out over the ocean, with the ebb and flow of the waves complimented by the sometimes frantic action on stage.
The devised piece has been produced in conjunction with the National Autistic Society and boasts a central performance from Alex Brain (as Katy) of such a high caliber that the play becomes a thoroughly engaging but also edifying evening at the theatre.

Sand Castles built with talent
A
s someone who is originally from an idyllic seaside town, the pleasures of beach life aren't lost on me.
In fact, I'm still known to snap on my cozzie and have a dip in the surf whenever I’m able to, so a play that glories in the ritual of the British seaside holiday is right up my street (or should I say shoreline?). The Bob Hope Theatre Actors’ Company's production of Bob Larbey’s Sand Castles
coupled some classic humour with a quintessentially English genteelness in a wonderful play performed with aplomb by a hugely talented local cast. We were invited to join William (Eric Whiting) and Margaret Patterson (Sallie Cross), a middle aged couple who have holidayed in the same coastal spot for years and who see their beloved beach hut as a real home away from home. They can just about cope with their seafront neighbours, the Billets, but when another
family of ‘renters’ appears, their quiet vacation spot turns into a battleground. Writer, Bob Larbey’s most famous work was for television and included the hits The Good Life and Ever Decreasing Circles. The sitcom style of his writing is very evident within Sand Castles, with a type of gentle rambling comedy, which is easy to watch and extremely relatable, but must be performed with care in order to maintain a good pace to the dialogue.
Luckily, for the most part, the Eltham based theatre company belied their amateur status, which is hardly surprising, as on a quick scan of the programme I noticed many of the cast have received professional training and are stalwarts of the local stage scene. Eric Whiting gave an excellent performance as William marrying the cheeky humour perfectly with the sensitive side of a character, who has recently been made aware of his mortality. Sallie Cross’ entitled, plummy Margaret was very reminiscent of Penelope Keith’s Margot in The Good Life and acted perfectly as the brunt of many of the jokes. Bryan Randall and Laurie Brown - as Stan and Bernice Billet - on the other hand, had a much more nouveau riche air, not unlike that of Marlene and Boycie in another beloved British sitcom, Only Fools and Horses. Brown’s portrayal was so effervescent, that she lifted the pace with every entrance and when matched by Randall, the pair provided some real comedy gold, particularly when dealing with Mother, played with a steely resolve by Wendy Hamilton. When the jovial Doug (the topnotch Ray Currier) turned up - bedecked in some fetching budgie smugglers and Crocs- the
territorial British holidaymakers had their noses put out of joint, but his charm worked wonders on the meek and neurotic Pauline (played with poise by Carol Macfarlane), while his bikini clad nieces (Gemma Devine and Katie McPheat) allowed for some admirable Carry On style absurdity. There were also some great cameo appearances, with Callum Brice as a hapless beachcomber, Rose Walker, a biscuit stealing busybody, and Ann Ashenden and Natalie Down as wannabe ‘hutters’, who were desperate to ascend to the lofty heights of the beach premise owners. Yes, there were bits where the dialogue could have been a little snappier and a few adlibs were thrown in on the night I went, but it just enhanced the charm of this well presented comedy. The Bob Hope Theatre Actors’ Company’s next production is Monty Python’s Spamalot in November and on the merit of this production, it promises not to be missed. www.bobhopetheatre.co.uk

Royal Borough officers have carried out an intensive day of enforcement action in Plumstead. It's part of a drive to clamp down hard on littering, commercial waste, fly-tipping and privately owned untidy land in the area.
The operation resulted in: • 54 premises inspections • 21 notices served on local businesses • 6 on the spot fines issued totalling £1100 Wardens equipped with state-of-the-art
body cameras and Enviro-Crime officers from the Plumstead Fly-tipping task force worked on the ground as part of the operation. The special day of action came after a concerted effort by the Royal Borough to encourage over 20 Plumstead businesses to tidy up their fronts, remove cluttering signage and play their part towards creating a welcoming Plumstead High Street. The Royal Borough also launched its ‘Love Plumstead, Hate Litter’ campaign back in May to discourage littering and build a collective pride in the community. Councillor Jackie Smith, Cabinet Member for Community Safety & Environment said, “We’ve heard residents’ concerns loud and clear and are running a #PositivePlumstead campaign to create a cleaner and tidier environment for us all. £1million towards homes for looked after children The Royal Borough of Greenwich, along with five other south London boroughs, has successfully won a bid for £1million for a scheme to provide first-class homes for children who are looked after by the Council. The money will help the Royal Borough along with the London boroughs of Croydon, Merton, Sutton, Bexley and Lewisham more easily find homes for looked after children that provides them with a safe and happy home and helps them reach their full potential. The scheme will develop a blueprint that will enable local authorities across the country to follow suit and develop their own specialist housing for looked after children.

the packed amphitheatre erupted with squeals of joy, particularly during ‘Wings’ when a streamer cannon exploded over the crowd. After an acoustic sing-along of ‘Change Your Life’ and a rockin’ rendering of ‘Touch’ the band left the stage only to return for an encore with the rousing 2017 Brit Award winning single ‘Shout out to My Ex’. Some smaller concert goers were left feeling disappointed by the view they got of their idols, as the lack of raked seating at the venue, meant even while standing
on chairs, the stage was a bit tricky to get a glimpse of and the big screens - upon which all of the action was relayed - were not set quite high enough to counteract the deficient sight lines. That said, even if you couldn’t see very much the quality of sound produced by the girls and their musicians was excellent. It was an impressive display; with pitch perfect live vocals and stirring dance routines, which made the hour long set a joy for fans and first time ‘Mixers’ alike.

t’s always great to see a pub, which hasn’t needed to sell out to ‘the man’ and that still has the community at its core. Nestled away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist filled Cutty Sark area of Greenwich is the Pelton Arms, which manages to not only maintain a reputation as a local’s pub, but also continues to

champion entertainers from the milieu with weekly events, featuring some of the best cabaret performers and live bands in south east London. I popped along on a very warm July evening and was really heartened to be sharing the plush place on Pelton Road with a monthly meeting of the Autistic
Society, while the fab monthly Northern Soul gathering was just getting ready to fill the tavern with some sultry sounds. My housemate and I were greeted at the bar and after a quick chat with the friendly staff, settled down to a great evening of good old-fashioned pub grub. The interior has probably not changed much over the last 50 years and has that very cozy lived in feel, you get from a boozer, which still serves the community with reasonably priced fulsome fare. You’ll want to go along with an empty stomach as portion sizes are, quite simply, huge and we made the mistake of having starters before our main courses. I had some fiery chicken wings, while my friend tucked into some potato skins topped with pulled pork, which were a feast in themselves. The pub was busy, but not too noisy and we were able to evaluate our days pretty much undisturbed, save for the barman checking our meals were adequate.
Our main courses - I chose a sirloin steak and chips and my companion went for a spicy chicken burger - completely filled the regular sized dinner plates upon which they were served, but unperturbed, we both ploughed through. The staff were pleased to have tested our appetites and amused when neither of us were able to finish. In a cheeky little exchange one staff member challenged us to try a homemade slice of peanut butter and toffee cheesecake and never shy when it comes to feeding my face, I felt it would have been churlish to give in, so despite my stomach already resembling a heavily pregnant hippo, I gorged myself on the sweet treat. The only negative came from the toilet facilitates, which are tired and scruffy and could do with a serious overhaul. The Pelton Arms provided us with some really decent food, a great atmosphere once we had finished our feast, a lovely alfresco space to enjoy the sunshine. www.peltonarms.com
