Flower power: Why flowers remain the gift of choice on Mother's Day

G

ifting flowers is an age-old way of showing love and giving thanks.

Mother’s Day – or Mothering Sunday, as it was formerly known – is among the most common times of year to buy flowers as a gift. The holiday is rooted in the Christian calendar, falling on the fourth Sunday of Lent and three Sundays before Easter, writes Holly O'Mahony...

Mother’s Day dates back to the 17th century, when it was established as a holiday for household servants, who would take leave from their employers to visit their mothers. The servants would reportedly gather fresh flowers on their journey home to give as a gift.

Other aspects of the tradition, such as visiting your ‘mother’ church in your hometown and eating simnel cake, are no longer associated with Mother’s Day, but gifting flowers has remained a custom three centuries later.

Mother’s Day experienced a lull over the years, but was revived in 1913 thanks to an English Anglican woman called Constance Smith.

Inspired by the recent take-off of the Mother’s Day in the US, Constance campaigned to revive the holiday back in the UK. The tradition in America was relatively new, held in May (rather than a particular Sunday during Lent), and was brought about for entirely different reasons to the

American Mother’s Day was established by a woman called Anna Jarvis, who began a campaign to make Mother’s Day a recognised holiday in the US after her own mother passed away in 1905. In 1908, Anna held her first memorial for her mother at their local church in Grafton, West Virginia.

Not long after Constance Smith reinstated Mother’s Day in the UK, merchants saw the commercial opportunity for it and so, little by little, the holiday we know today with its cards and flowers was born.

The borough of Greenwich is in no short supply of flower shops, but on my latest search for a bouquet I came across Crimson Rose, a flower shop in Plumstead selling ‘traditional and tropical flowers’.

The shop is run by three women – Kim, Maria and Chrissy – and has been providing the multicultural

community with blooms for a range of events and occasions for the past 17 years.

“I bought a shell of a shop in Plumstead Common Road,” says co-owner Kim, reflecting back.

“I had no experience, no staff to assist and I had never been taught [about shop management].” Kim was working in the City at the time; her background was in law and IT, but she had always loved flowers. “I am always amazed by their beauty and how such beauty has come from the ground,” she says.

Over the years, Kim has had a number of memorable and bizarre requests for flower arrangements.

“We’ve made tablets, fish and chips, and cartoon characters – all out of flowers.” she says. “We always go the extra mile to ensure our customer has what they want, especially if it’s a last farewell.”

For Crimson Rose, Valentine’s Day on February 14

comes with very particular stresses. “The logistics of sourcing red roses is massive and you can actually buy them a year in advance directly from growers,” explains Kim. “However, be prepared [if you’re buying them from flower shops], as the prices can increase by up to five times per stem to what they would cost on any other day of the year.”

Mother’s Day is even more popular for Crimson Rose, but because there’s less of a fixation with one particular type of flower, it’s less stressful to organise. “The choice of flowers available is better too, as most mums like carnations and chrysanthemums,” Kim says.

“Having said that, if the flowers [we’re sourcing] are in the Interflora catalogue, growers are likely to increase the prices. Buying wise, for us florists Mother’s Day is still better [than Valentine’s Day].”

“We start preparing for Mother’s

Day at least three months in advance when we buy our sundry items – if we leave it to the last minute they won’t be available,” explains Kim. “As for pre-ordering flowers, we do that at least a month in advance.” In Kim’s experience, sourcing certain flowers last minute can sometimes even be favourable price wise. “It’s a case of supply and demand,” she says.

The Crimson Rose website boasts an array of pinky-purple or vibrant yellow bouquets, priced from £21.95 to £75.95. However, Kim insists they don’t stick to set prices and can make things work whatever the shopper’s budget.

Why are flowers such an enduringly popular gift? For Kim, not only do they convey thought, love and care, but the simple sight of them makes people happy. “You would be amazed how a bunch of daffs can brighten your day and lift your spirits,” she says. “If you want to make your mum smile on Mother’s Day, flowers certainly do that. No matter how much you have spent or whether you’ve gone for a bunch of daffs or tulips, a bouquet of lilies, tropicals, or a single rose, all flowers say you’ve thought about your mum.”

Documentary browses life in New York Public Library

n the surface, it’s easy to write off Frederick Wiseman’s 2017 film Ex Libris: The New York Public Library as a sleepy, incredibly long documentary (three hours and 26 minutes, to be precise) about the comings and goings at New York’s chief library, writes Holly O'Mahony...

You could call it a behind-thescenes nosy into what makes the library tick and an endearing insight to the visitors who depend on it most. But there’s more to it than that.

“Ex Libris is just a wonderful reminder of the central role libraries play in communities everywhere,” points out Caroline Jupp, who programmed the upcoming screening of the film at Deptford Cinema. “Turning his curious eye to one of the world’s greatest institutions of learning, Wiseman offers us a captivating and engrossing portrait of this incredible resource of knowledge that is there for all of New York’s inhabitants,” she enthuses. “The film takes us inside board meetings, talks with guest speakers [including Patti Smith and Elvis Costello], book club events and donors’ dinners, as well as the day-to-day activities of lending books.”

The screening is part of Deptford Cinema’s ‘Unseen in 2018’ series, a project which aims to show some of the best films released in 2018 that were neglected by mainstream cinemas. “Ex Libris was one of the

titles mentioned to us and I jumped at the opportunity because of a strong personal interest – I work as a librarian and am part of the Save Lewisham Libraries campaign,” Caroline explains.

“I love the slow and eclectic way the film gives its audience access to so much of what goes on in libraries,” she says. Are there any specific examples of when this is done effectively? “At one point, the camera lingers on the upturned faces of a crowd of people listening to an inspirational speaker and you can just see that thirst for knowledge

Likkle Rum With Grandma comes to the Albany The first solo show of Croydon-based writer Jeremiah ‘Sugar J’ Brown, Likkle Rum with Grandma is a story primarily about immigration, told through poetry, anecdotes and a Jamaican grandmother’s voice, writes Holly O'Mahony..

The focus of Jeremiah’s show is, of course, his grandma.

Described as a ‘journey over a generational bridge’, Jeremiah uses the show to ponder the life of his grandma when she was just a young adult – like himself.

It explores the major issues concerning immigration – feelings of displacement, loneliness and loss – and mixes these with the lighter struggles, like missing decent rum and fruitcake.

Any favourite moments in the film?

“One of my favourite parts is when the filmmaker visits the Manhattan Picture Library which has been used by the likes of Andy Warhol. All the pictures are still accessible as hard copy in card folders – I’d love to browse that collection!”

In Ex Libris, a worker at New York Public Library points out: “A lot of people think [libraries] are a storage space for books, but libraries are about people.” It’s a sentiment Caroline firmly agrees with. “This

film definitely focuses on the library users and the library workers seeking to serve them, rather than the library as a repository,” she says.

“The same can be said for Lewisham Libraries – locally, we have seen so many staff cut and made redundant, yet trained library workers are becoming ever more important in this digital era,” Caroline says, adding that libraries are often where people go if they need help applying for Universal Credit or very basic needs such as money for food and housing.

It’s because of this that

documentaries like Ex Libris take on a secondary role of reasserting the value and relevance of public facilities – in this case libraries – in the digital age. “Sadly, our beloved institutions of public learning are under threat,” says Caroline. “Even though the right to ‘a comprehensive and efficient library service for all’ is enshrined in law, there is a huge crisis in public libraries in the UK, with council library budgets slashed, library closures [130 closed last year alone] and huge numbers of professional and trained library staff being made redundant.”

Caroline is hopeful that, as well as enjoying Ex Libris, audience members leave the screening feeling inspired to fight for their own public library. “I hope that people will be inspired by this documentary to feel a little more compelled to fight for the remaining libraries that we have left here in the UK,” she says.

“I hope it’s not too late; that a decade down the line we [are left to] regret what we lost.”

The screening of Ex Libris at Deptford Cinema will be held in two parts, with an informal discussion with library campaigners in between.

Celebrating the birthday and music of Jonathan Dove Blackheath-born Jonathan Dove is one of the world's leading, living composers of opera, choral works, plays, films, and orchestral and chamber music, writes Holly O'Mahony...

To celebrate his 60th birthday, Trinity Laban is holding a concert in his honour at Blackheath Halls.

The event is free to attend but tickets are required.

“Jonathan is probably best known as a composer of opera, but his song cycle work is less known,” says Andrew MatthewsOwen, junior trinity lead tutor in piano and curator of the concert – who is also a colleague and friend of the composer.

Jonathan’s latest song cycle – Letters From Claude, which sets Debussy’s letters to his wife and his mistress – premiered at the Southbank Centre in May 2018

and was recorded for Nimbus Records. It was released earlier this month and went in at number 10 in the Classical Charts.

“I wanted to create an opportunity for audiences to hear these vocal works, and give a performance platform to young singers and pianists to experience this music,” Andrew explains. “So I approached Jennifer Hamilton [Trinity Laban’s head of vocal studies] about the possibility of curating a 60th birthday concert for Jonathan, making it Trinity Laban’s tribute to this important composer.”

Among the pieces being performed is the unaccompanied song cycle Ariel, which Andrew has split amongst four performers, with plans for the piece to be interspersed throughout the evening in various locations. “Not only does this increase the number

of performers involved, but thematically reflects the shapeshifting nature of the character,” he says.

In curating the material, Andrew was also keen to acknowledge Trinity Laban’s Venus Blazing initiative, a year-long celebration of women composers. “In addition to Dove’s song cycles, I have programmed solo piano pieces

by Grammy-nominated composer Dobrinka Tabakova and some recent songs by Charlotte Bray” he reveals. “Though not explicitly associated with Dove, Tabakova and Bray are composers whose music I’ve recently introduced to Jonathan and that he holds in high regard.”

When asked to reflect on classical music, we typically think of composers from the Baroque, Classical or Romantic eras, but many of us are unfamiliar with contemporary

composers. Andrew is keen to raise awareness of the work of remarkable living composers – like Jonathan Dove. “It’s easy in our niche classical world to assume that everyone knows about living composers, but I want to do anything I can to expose the wider community to this music,” he says. “I hope a lot of people will hear Jonathan Dove’s music for the first time and

it will inspire them to go and listen to more.”

Eltham comes to life with The Sound Of Music Amateur dramatic society Sidcup Musical Productions is bringing its production of The Sound of Music to the Bob Hope Theatre in Eltham this week.

It’s a musical that, despite its enduring popularity, is rarely performed in south London due to copyright constraints, Writes Holly O'Mahony...

“Nobody had performed the show locally for years [because of ] it not being available from the rights holders,” explains Chris Williams, director of the production and a member of Sidcup since the ‘90s. “The opportunity arose and we went for it. The Sound of Music is a feelgood show, and with doom and gloom ever surrounding us, audiences are in need of the feelgood factor.”

The Sound of Music was made famous by Robert Wise’s 1965 film, and the stage version uses the same score which was composed by Richard Rodgers with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. The story follows Maria, a carefree nun-in-training who leaves her nunnery in Salzburg, Austria to become a governess for the seven children of firm but fair Captain von Trapp. Through teaching the children – and subsequently their father – a love of music, Maria manages to restore happiness in the family, and eventually falls in love with the

widowed captain.

Sidcup Musical Productions holds rehearsals every Friday evening at Hurst Community Centre in Sidcup, Kent. They produce two big shows a year – one in spring, the other in autumn – performing these at the Bob Hope Theatre in Eltham. The company’s repertoire is largely made up of musicals and what they describe as ‘light operatic

works’.

Chris has always enjoyed directing. The first show she directed for Sidcup came about “by accident” when the then director “did a diva” and walked out of a rehearsal in a strop. That was back in the ‘90s and Chris is still directing for Sidcup today.

With many of the cast and creative team fitting in The Sound of Music around other

jobs and school committments, the rehearsal process has been a relatively drawn-out affair.

“Auditions were held in September and October 2018, then the first rehearsal for the children was held in December.” Most of the children in the show train with local drama schools including All The Arts Theatre School, Michelle Sidwell Academy of Dance and Susie Clarke Dance School.

“This is a big show. The musical director Alan Thompson, choreographer Elyse Herbert and I have worked with the cast since January trying to make it as good as possible within the time constraints,” says Chris. “We have some very talented principals with a wealth of both amateur and professional experience.”

Indeed, several cast members turned down other opportunities to be part of The Sound of Music, not only for the joy of being in the show, but because of how rarely it’s staged in the area. “The Sound of Music is an iconic show, unashamedly sentimental and fun to perform,” concludes Chris.

If you don’t manage to catch Sidcup’s production of The Sound of Music, but are curious to see the group in action – or, if you see the show and want to see more of what they do – you can: the company has secured the rights to 1956 musical The King and I – another collaboration between Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II – which they’ll be performing at the Bob Hope Theatre in April 2020.

Power for the people

he council currently has plans for community use of what they described as the ‘Plumstead power station’.

This is the rather grand building hidden away in White Hart Road, used as a depot by the Council for many years and generally ignored.

More recently it has been part of the Crossrail site and the new line gives a very good view of it.

Once upon a time Plumstead was separate from Woolwich. It was a small local authority – Plumstead Vestry – but by the late 1890s Woolwich was about to swallow them up. They wanted to make sure that what was handed over was something really special.

In the 1890s electricity as a means of power in streets and homes was coming in fast. Local authorities were looking at ways in which this could be provided. One big issue was street lighting – often expensively provided from privately run gas works. Surely it would be better and more cheaply done with electricity and so why didn’t councils build power stations, which they would own, to provide it? There

was also a problem with domestic and commercial waste that was expensive to deal with too. So why not put the two problems together and have one solution? Really goahead councils in the 1890s were building works where rubbish could be burnt to generate electricity. The first of these was in Shoreditch - the building which is now the Circus School in Hoxton Square, where local rubbish was used to generate electricity for local people in 1897.

In the 1890s new housing was being built at a tremendous rate in Plumstead. Waste was an expensive problem as was street lighting and, in addition, they needed bricks and road making materials. Plumstead Vestry began to investigate building its own waste burning power station which would save money and provide proper, well paid jobs. They appointed an Engineer-Surveyor – Frank Sumner – and he was to design and build the new station.

The scheme was barely agreed when Plumstead Vestry went out of existence but the new Woolwich Borough Council ratified their plans and continued with the scheme. They made sure that local companies could tender for the equipment and a loan was raised from the London County Council.

There was, however, something else going on. Woolwich electricity was provided by a private company, Woolwich District Electric Lighting Company, and plans were going ahead for the Council to buy it up.

The new generating station/

destructor was opened by the Woolwich Mayor in 1903 – and almost immediately a lot of whingeing started in the press about the cost. Meanwhile the council pressed ahead with plans for expansion for the old private power station in Globe Lane. This grew and grew larger and more magnificent until it was nationalised in 1948, then ‘notably efficient’ and the only functioning power station in the country built by direct labour.

Many local people will remember it, with its three landmark chimneys – Woolwich was very, very proud of it. And the Plumstead generating station/destructor really got rather forgotten.

Electricity ceased to be generated at Plumstead in 1923 but they kept on burning the rubbish. They did other things too – from the start they had included a plant to manufacture road making materials and bricks from the sunburnt waste. It is important to remember that pre1960s most household and other waste would be ash and clinker from coal fires. It was this high carbon content that made it possible to get the high temperatures needed in the boilers of the station, and at the end of the process there would be much ash and waste of the sort which brick makers used. Woolwich was proud of its local housing build with Council made bricks. As time went on other of the more unmentionable aspects of Borough life opened on the White Hart Road site – disinfection, special cleansing, and a laundry for foul bedding which still functioned in the

late 1990s. And then there were the pigs – I am very unsure when they arrived but there were certainly pig stys on site. I think they lived on the food waste which the Borough collected – as late as 1953 the Woolwich Tenants Handbook gives instructions about using the bins provided for food scraps. The pork most likely went to the Boroughs homes for old people and children.

Waste incineration ended in 1965 and the building was used for storage. The waste went to landfill.

I remember going there in 2000 and it was amazing! It was like every time the borough had installed anything – from light bulbs to gas meters and baths – and there had been a few items left over, they were kept ‘just in case’. There were shelves and shelves and shelves of spares going back to the 1920s.

There were also piles of bits which had been saved from demolished buildings – plaques, ornamental stonework and so on. What happened to all of this stuff??

And so it was listed. The report from what was then English Heritage notes its complex plan, its elaborate interiors and the integrity of its design. Frank Sumner did a good job. It really is a very, very grand building which has sat in this obscure corner of the borough for nearly 120 years – but no one ever sees it and very few would know it was there.

So some community use is what it needs because it was built for the people of Plumstead and – I guess – to show them off a little as well as to provide them with the very latest

in municipal technology. Let’s hope it gets the credit it deserves, at last with the new plans by the Council.

eading to Alla Salute!

– a traditional Italian restaurant (or ‘trattoria’, really – Italian for a more casual eating establishment) in Deptford – I’m surprised to be led by Citymapper towards a new-build block of flats, surrounded by further almost identical blocks. It’s an odd location; the ground floor of an apartment block isn’t really what comes to mind when you conjure up a mental image of ‘homely Italian’ fare. Inside, the restaurant bar appears where you’d expect to find a reception desk and the tables seem to float somewhat randomly in the airy, barely decorated room.

Still, a restaurant must not be judged on its appearance, writes Holly O'Mahony...

Ambiance is restored in the form of Barbara De Finis, the restaurant’s manager and co-owner who opened Alla Salute! in 2016 with head chef, Enrica Grasso. Barbara warmly welcomes and guides us to our table (the restaurant isn’t busy on a Sunday afternoon so we have a choice of where to sit), before taking us through the menu in a breezy but

affectionate manner. “If we eat or drink it, it’s on the menu,” she tells us, proudly.

Dishes here are inspired by the flavours of Puglia in south-east Italy, where Barbara and Enrica are originally from. The menu is weighted towards pizzas – which are proofed for 24 hours

by Enrica herself, and made with organic flour and extra virgin olive oil. Studying the menu, several pasta dishes also catch our eyes, so my companion and I opt to go halves on a plate of Orecchiette al Ragu (Enrica’s signature, a monkfish pasta dish) and a Burrata and Crudo pizza. Having swayed away from our second pasta choice, the Orecchiette al Ragu, we decide to throw in a starter of Polpettine al Sugo (Puglia-style meatballs in a tomato ragu sauce).

First up is the three large melt-in-the-mouth meatballs, drenched in a rich tomato sauce. Two slices of homemade sourdough toast stand to attention on either side of the bowl, appearing like wings but soon becoming edible spoons with which to soak up excess sauce. The dish is a little salty and could hold a bit more seasoning, but makes us close our eyes and sigh with

contentment all the same.

Next comes the Orecchiette al Ragu: small round disks of pasta soaked in a sauce of tomato, white wine, saffron, lime zest and parsley. It’s rich and zingy; the monkfish pieces are perfectly tender and a delight to come across, but few and far between (we counted five small mouthfuls throughout the plate).

The Burrata and Crudo pizza, meanwhile, bears a spot-on ratio of burrata to air-dried ham; the meat neatly salting the blobs of mild and creamy cheese.

Too full to go our own way with desserts, we share a cup of Affogato al Caffe (vanilla ice cream ‘drowned’ in a shot of Quarta caffe espresso). It might not be as utterly delicious as its namesake served at nearby restaurant Sparrow, but it’s tasty all the same. More importantly, the sugar and caffeine do wonders to restore our energy levels following the carb-heavy mains.

While working our way through the meal, three things come to mind that I really like about Alla Salute!: it’s independent, a good space for families (a mother sits relaxing on a sofa at the other end of the room from us, her children playing with a

collection of toys – presumably the restaurant’s – in front of her), and it’s run by two women passionate about sharing their native cuisine with the local community in Deptford.

Shots of electric yellow, punchy limoncello arrive – unordered, as they often do in Italian restaurants – for us to chase down the meal with.

We raise our glasses and say cheers (or ‘alla salute’ in Italian) to Barbara and Enrica, for opening a restaurant run with love in SE13.

CACT’s holiday football courses to return this Easter

"We are hoping for another brilliant but busy Easter.

During February, we saw over 600 young people attend our courses across South East London & Kent."

harlton Athletic Community Trust’s (CACT) holiday football courses will return for the upcoming Easter holidays.

Running on weekdays from 8-17 April (excluding Good Friday and Easter Monday), the courses are for young people aged 5 to 15.

The courses will be on in Greenwich Park, at Charlton Athletic’s Sparrows Lane Training Ground in New Eltham

There will also be girls only sessions available plus goalkeeping courses run by former Charlton shot-stopper Bob Bolder.

Courses run from 9am-3pm, with a special award ceremony taking place on the afternoon of the final day.

One parent, whose son has come through CACT’s holiday football courses, said: “He does the Advanced

Centre, he’s been doing it for two years now. And he has been shortlisted for next season, which we are very grateful to Charlton for.

“He can’t stop talking about Charlton!”

3. The effect of the Order would be to temporarily prohibit vehicles from exiting, proceeding or waiting (including waiting for the purposes of loading or unloading. In Crossmead at the junction of Court Road.

4. Whilst the Order is in operation traffic will be diverted via Sidcup Road (A20), Southwood Road, Parkview Road, Green Lane, Sidcup Road and Court Road. Prohibitions remain in force, pedestrians are not affected and vehicle access will be maintained wherever possible.

5. Nothing in this Notice will apply to anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or traffic warden, to emergency service vehicles, or to vehicles being used in connection with the works.
