he nation’s favourite yellow magic bear Sooty celebrated his 70th birthday last year. But the septuagenarian is showing no signs of slowing down, launching into the New Year with Sweep, Soo and his TV pal Richard Cadell with a brand-new spring theatre tour of SOOTY’S MAGIC SHOW, including at the Churchill Theatre.

Laura Burgoine chats with Sooty’s presenter of 20 years Richard Cadell, who tells us why the live theatre show is an unmissable treat for the whole family.

What kind of mischief can audiences expect from Sooty, Sweep and Soo in Sooty’s Magic Show?

This is Sooty doing what he does best – magic. So the audience can expect to be saying “Izzy whizzy let’s get busy” a great deal!

Sooty will be performing some amazing tricks including sawing a lady in half, floating a child from the audience and making it snow!

Sweep will be getting in the way with his own disastrous magic tricks most of which revolve around sausages.

You’ll be joined on the tour by special guests, circus stars Michael Jordan and Fantasie De La Nuit. What’s their role in the show?

Michael Jordan is an amazing circus artist and a fabulous magician. So with Sooty’s help he will be performing some largescale Las Vegas style illusions along with some incredible juggling and circus tricks. Fantasie De La Nuit will allow Sooty and Sweep to perform some incredible tricks using the magic of ultraviolet light.

It has to be seen to be believed.

It’s an extensive tour – 48 dates across 4 months…

Performing live is what we love most. Of course, making the television show is a lot of fun but Sooty has always been at his best in front of a live audience where he can make not only the children laugh but all the adults too. Plus after each performance there is a chance for everybody to meet Sooty and it’s always such a pleasure to meet fans old and new!

Sooty had a huge birthday celebration at his birthplace, Blackpool Pier, last year.

What was it like having Sooty’s biggest fans and best friends all in one place to celebrate?

It was absolutely amazing and overwhelming, actually. There is so much love for this little bear. He has been at the heart of so many people’s childhoods over the last 70 years. Over 1500 people turned up to celebrate – every age and generation. It just felt like one huge family.

September 2018 also saw a brand-new series of ‘The Sooty Show’ on ITVBe. Which celebrities did you have involved in this series and do you have a favourite celebrity moment from the new series?

(who did so well on Strictly Come Dancing recently), John Challis – better known as Boyce in Only Fools and Horses, Peter Andre and Lisa Riley. They were all amazing, but I have to say Lisa Riley put up with so much on the day of her shoot. We literally submerged her in foam and she was a real trooper. I’d go as far as to say I think she got the worst pasting Sooty has ever given anyone! It was a real laugh and resulted in one of my favourite episodes of all time.

Did Sooty and the gang get up to any backstage mischief whilst filming?

Of course they did! Particularly in the ice-cream episode where we had to navigate a real live cow in the studio! We also did an episode where we went back in time and Sweep met his ancestors -all 16 of them! You can imagine the noise with all that squeaking - that was quite a day.

Sooty & Sweep performed a sketch in November as part of ITV’s ‘We Are Most Amused and Amazed,’ a birthday celebration for Prince Charles, who also celebrated his 70th birthday last year. What was it like for Sooty to perform for and shake paws with Prince Charles?

I think it was possibly the highlight of Sooty’s career.

It was just an amazing experience to be there at the London Palladium at the request of Prince Charles. It turns out that Sooty and Sweep have always been personal favourites of the Prince.

We also received a lovely personal letter saying how much he had enjoyed Sooty and Sweep’s performance. You have to remember that the Royals were also children once and Sooty brought magic to their childhood too.

Has performing for Prince Charles boosted Sooty’s social standing?

Well Sooty is already a recipient of the OBE, you have to remember.

That was of course in Harry Corbett's day. So you could say that Sooty has been a friend of the Royal Family for many years already. Maybe I’m biased but I consider Sooty to be a legend and national treasure in any event!

What did Prince Charles say to Sooty and Sweep when they met after the show?

Were they on their best behaviour?

Sooty was told in no uncertain terms that he was not to use his water pistol but I can’t say he wasn’t tempted!

The Prince was on great form and after he had shaken Sooty and Sweep’s paws he asked them if there was a person hiding beneath them! Sooty, as ever, remained silent.

You’ve now been Sooty’s TV presenter for 20 years – how has the journey been for you and do you have a personal highlight of the 2018 70th birthday year?

The last 20 years have flown by - I’ve just had a ball. It really was a life-changer for me and I have loved every second of it. I feel honoured and privileged to be trusted with such an iconic and well-loved character. There have been so many highlights, but I think the most humbling thing is to see the power that Sooty has to bring hope and happiness to those less privileged than ourselves.

We have raised significant funds for charities and we have made a real difference to certain people’s lives. That is one element that I never expected, and it has been wonderful to see Sooty make a difference.

documentary ‘Bradley Walsh: When Dummies Took Over The World’ alongside other puppet stars including Orville, Emu and Spit the Dog. It was noticeable in the documentary that Sooty’s career started before all of his showbiz chums and continues now as the longest running children’s television show in the world.

What do you think the secret to Sooty’s longevity is?

Simplicity. After all he is a teddy bear and most children receive a teddy bear as their first ever toy so it’s very easy to see why children fall in love with Sooty very quickly. And now of course it’s the grandparents that are introducing their grandchildren to the same little teddy bear that made them laugh also. And it hasn’t changed. I’m still performing the same routines that Harry Corbett performed 70 years ago, and they still make children scream with laughter. In this everchanging world I think people find

it very reassuring that some things remain the same.

After the tour, what does the rest of 2019 and the future hold for The Sooty Show?

We have lots planned. We have, for several years, been working on a full feature length movie which we will continue to progress this year. It’s a tough business but all the elements are there, and the plan is to get the cameras rolling this year. It’s out of my hands personally but a lot of eminent people are working to make it a reality. So we have had to keep the diary clear just in case! We have just completed a spectacular pantomime and we will definitely be performing live again next Christmas, so we are looking forward to that immensely.

History

The story of William Joyce Mary Mills

M

aritime Greenwich is what the tourists come to see. However Greenwich itself was never an important area for private shipbuilding companies, writes Mary Mills...

Between the 16th and 19th centuries London shipbuilders produced sailing vessels with an international reputation, while Greenwich – apart from the Royal Dockyards - was a fishing port.

Some private shipyards moved to Greenwich as sail gave way to steam in the 19th century and while some built both sailing and steam ships, others produced specialist steam engines. This is the story of one of them - William Joyce.

He was the son of a Jeremiah Joyce – an academic, once tutor to the elite Stanhope family at Chevening. In 1794 Jeremiah had been arrested for treason and incarcerated in the Tower of London on a charge of advocating Parliamentary reform. He was released without trial following the acquittal of the better known Thomas Hardy and Horne Tooke – in a legal case which made history. He went on to become a Unitarian minister and the founder, contributor and

editor to some of the early 19th century scientific journals.

William Joyce was only three when his father died and we know nothing about what then happened to him. It is thought that Jeremiah’s younger children may have been taken in by other Unitarians while his widowed mother moved to Tunbridge Wells. We have no idea where William lived or where he went to school – but we could assume that he undertook an engineering apprenticeship, perhaps with one of the Thames-side shipbuilding or engine building firms. The first we hear of him is when he developed his ‘pendulous’ steam engine from 1834 when he was just 21. These engines were advertised for sale from 1835, but we have no idea where his business was or where his engines were made.

The first we know of William in Greenwich is when he took out a lease in 1841 on an old gas works’ site which he named Greenwich Iron Works. This had originally been in what is now Norway Street and stretched to the side of the Creek – roughly what is now called Dowells Street. He spent a ‘large sum’ on ‘improvements’ which included engineering, plate making and model departments, as well as a foundry and a high chimney.

At first Joyce & Co. manufactured mainly steam engines here. We know very little detail. Some went to local firms – one, sold around 18434, went to Frank Hills East Greenwich chemical works on the Greenwich Peninsula

and was a “A 25 hp steam engine, described as having two oscillating cylinders and a 18ft 6in fly wheel”. Around the same time another engine was sold to John Bennett Lawes for his innovative super-phosphate factory on Deptford Creek.

Many must have been sold further afield. We know of one which went to a corn mill in Gloucester. When Joyce sent them a replacement crankshaft following an accident at the mill, the delays in its delivery led to a long court case which changed the law on liability of carriers. Later Joyce provided the machinery for a corn mill as far away as Smyrna – and this equipment was described in much detail in the trade press of the day. We can assume that there were many other such contracts, since we know about these only because unusual features made them worth reporting. This was a busy and prosperous works.

By the mid-1840s Joyce was moving into engines for river boats, becoming part of the Greenwich tradition of making state of the art marine engines.

Steam driven vessels were becoming important means of transport on the Thames and one of the companies ran the Halfpenny Fare steamers. Joyce supplied the engines for three of these – The Ant, The Bee and The Cricket. The Cricket was to become famous because her boiler exploded one morning in August 1847 while she was at Adelphi Pier and packed with passengers. The death toll was

never finally agreed but was probably upwards of 30. At the subsequent enquiry both Joyce and his foreman, Thomas Meacham, gave evidence although there was no question that their equipment was faulty – it turned out that the engineer on the boat had wedged down some of the valves and then gone off without telling anyone what he had done.

Joyce is said to have built a great many ships, although it will need a lot more research to track them all down. In 1850 he built the City of Paris which is said to be the first iron steamer ‘of any magnitude’ built and launched in Greenwich. She was built for the Commercial Steam Navigation Company to run a service between London and Boulogne. She is said to have been built to a specification provided by Oliver Lang, master shipwright at Woolwich Dockyard.

The Great Exhibition in 1851 gave Joyce a great showplace for his engines, which were on display and reported on. One of his engines was working an ice making machine – and producing the ices for sale in the Crystal Palace’s restaurant.

The Joyce Company was registered in Moorgate where William’s brother Charles had a shipping agency. Charles has spent some time in Egypt and William built a ‘schooner rigged steam yacht; called the Kassed Khier for His Highness Said Pacha of Egypt. This was in 1852, by which time Joyce had taken on Dreadnought Wharf

which lay in Thames Street at the end of Norway Street. This of course allowed larger vessels to be launched directly into the Thames.

Other ships followed but we know about only a few of them. Fidget and Flirt were ‘Cheerful class' gun boats built for the Royal Navy. A report of a long court case refers to the Britannia – also called the Gibraltar. A ship called Peninsula was built for a City of London based company for trade with Portugal. During the court case, in 1854, Joyce & Co were declared bankrupt and the assets of the yard sold. It is worth noting that the purchaser was Thomas Meacham, the site foreman.

William Joyce died very suddenly one morning in August 1856; he was only 42 and was buried at Nunhead. Many Greenwich people attended the funeral and ‘it was felt that the town of Greenwich had lost one who had done much to promote the prosperity of the working population as a shipbuilder and the employed had lost a kind and considerate master’.

Joyce has been very much ignored by historians of steam, shipbuilding and Greenwich.

I hope this brief outline of his work will draw some attention to him. I hope that among the readers of Weekender are some specialists in the history of shipping who can add to what I have written. He made an important contribution to our history – let’s hear more about him.

Enter, Gerda Pohorylle and Endre Friedmann, a young, creative Jewish couple, passionate for life, each other and photography. Ethnicity being their barrier to success, Gerda creates the fictitious Robert Capa, thus ensuring Endre photographic stardom, while she becomes Gerda Taro slipping from history books.

Addressing this imbalance is the Arrows and Traps Theatre, providing an enthralling performance that keeps us glued to their every move.

Like a well oiled machine, cast members unite to give Gerda the pioneering recognition she deserves, all possible in this production, ‘Taro’, due to the superb writing and direction of Ross McGregor.

Monochromatically dressed cast members symbolically jump out of the flatness.

Stylistic techniques assist them: actors freeze frame shapes adding drama, then springing to life, pausing and resuming action. Both dialogue and spectacle mesmerise, allowing the audience to be persuaded by this alternative insight into history and open our hearts, minds and ears to Gerda's experience of events.

Sound and lighting effects add weight to the production, taking us from a Parisian café, to Gerda’s childhood home, and onto the frontline, facing gunfire.

Flitting back and forth in time reminds us life is complex, no linear version of events exists.

Gerda and Endre are as much part of the past as they are the present, and that gives depth and weight to their existence.

Gerda Pohorylle, along with the identities that armour her in a dangerous environment, is firmly in the picture, with cast breathing life into the many layers of her life. Past, present, future, father, friends and comrades - it is all in this production for us to soak up in admiration.

Taro puts Gerda up there where she belongs. One to see – in a heartbeat.

Have your say on multi-million pound Greenwich Park project Plans to protect and enhance Greenwich Park are being revealed at a series of public consultations, where visitors and locals can give their opinions.

Greenwich Park is under pressure from increasing visitor footfall, new tree pests and diseases and erosion of the most popular areas of the park, all of which are putting a strain on the park’s infrastructure, facilities and natural environment.

“Greenwich Park Revealed” is a major multi-million-pound project led by the Royal Parks – the charity that manages Greenwich Park – which will ensure that the park is sustainably fit for future generations.

The proposed plans will improve the park as a visitor destination and manage the physical pressure on the most popular areas of the park. It will better meet the needs and expectations of a growing and diverse local population, protect and improve biodiversity, and restore the historic integrity of the park’s design. The project will also create new opportunities for local residents, with a proposed new Learning Centre offering a programme of activities, as well as through volunteering and apprenticeships.

These proposals will build on initial consultation work undertaken in 2018, which sought people’s feedback on the specific issues of disabled access, education, biodiversity and heritage.

Overlooking the River Thames and home to one of London’s most iconic views, Greenwich Park is the oldest enclosed Royal Park in the UK and has been open to the public for more than 300 years. It is a unique mix of 17th century landscape, stunning gardens and a rich history that dates back to Roman times.

Greenwich Park Manager, Graham Dear, said “As well as its unique heritage, the green spaces, play areas and diverse ecology of this wonderful park provide a tranquil spot for locals to enjoy nature away from the hubbub of the city.”

on the most popular parts of the park…We have a one-off chance to bid for multi-millionpound funding for a unique project to transform and futureproof the park, by enhancing and protecting heritage gems, improving biodiversity and providing better visitor facilities, learning opportunities and information. But we can’t do this without the help of local residents.”

The Royal Parks charity has initial support from the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and BIG Lottery Fund for a £4.8million grant, as part of the multi-

million-pound project. The Royal Parks, and other funders, will also contribute to the project.

The project is supported by The Friends of Greenwich Park.

“Greenwich Park Revealed” has been awarded an initial development funding by the National Lottery to develop the project proposals more fully by incorporating the views of park users on the park’s future.

The final bid will be submitted at the end of August 2019.

Four public consultations are being held near Greenwich Park’s bandstand at 10am-4pm on: -Thursday 21st February -Sunday 24th February -Thursday 11th -Sunday 14th April Local residents can give their input on various aspects of the project to help shape the park’s future. The effect of the Order would be to temporarily prohibit vehicles from entering, exiting, proceeding or waiting (including waiting for the purposes of loading or unloading) in, Maze Hill, Millennium way North bound, Blackwall Lane, Plumstead High Street at the junction with Pettman Crescent, Pettman Crescent at the junction Plumstead Road and Woolwich New Road at the junction of Anglesea Road.

4. Whilst the Order is in operation traffic will be diverted via via traffic will be diverted via appropriately signed routes.

Prohibitions remain in force, pedestrians are not affected and vehicle access will be maintained wherever possible.

5. Nothing in this Notice will apply to anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or traffic warden, to emergency service vehicles, or to vehicles being used in connection with the works.

6. The restrictions described above will apply only during such times and to such extent as shall be indicated by traffic signs as prescribed by the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016.
