Strictly comes to O2

trictly is coming to town! And, for the first time ever, all four of the current TV judges are on the panel when the show takes to the road from the middle of January, writes Richard Barber...
A veteran of the tour Craig Revel Horwood described it as “a real treat for the fans.” Since 2010, he’s not only performed his familiar role as a judge on the Strictly tour, he’s also the director of the high-octane production. It’s quite an undertaking, something he first starts planning the previous June. “That’s the concept, the lighting, the music, the dance routines, the whole shebang,” he said. And each year the theme is different. “The challenge is to better

yourself every time, always trying to make it bolder, more theatrical. For 2019, there’s a water theme mixed with a disco feel. The current TV series began with a dance staged in and around the fountains at Somerset House and I wanted to continue that theme,” Craig continued. “I’m also keen on fantastic costume changes. The sparkle you are able to achieve with all the lights in the arena is incredible. It’s really something seeing the celebrities and pros dazzle in front of your eyes!” Arena audiences are in for a real treat, says Craig, with a fantastic evening of entertainment, showcasing all the amazing choreography and incredible live music for which Strictly is famous. They’ll experience a
host of breathtaking dance routines together with all the glitz, glamour and magic of the TV show live on stage. “This is a must-see spectacle for fans of all ages.” As well as enjoying the glittering routines, audiences also have the power to decide who wins the coveted Live Tour Glitterball trophy at the end of each show. After each celebrity couple has performed, the tour judges will provide their invaluable critique and scores but the audience can also text their votes for their favourite couple and ultimately decide who wins. “The atmosphere, the level of excitement are something it’s hard to describe if you haven’t experienced it for yourself,” Craig said. “And, from

the show. “It was lovely to see the enthusiastic reaction of the audiences on tour,” she says. “I’m used to Elstree, where the live TV show is filmed in front of 500 guests but that doesn’t prepare you for being in front of thousands of fantastic Strictly fans.” As a ballet dancer, she’s well used to regional tours. “People always

Mark Anthony performs all the million-selling hits recorded by Prince including Purple Rain, 1999, Kiss, Raspberry Beret, When Doves Cry, Little Red Corvette and The Most Beautiful Girl in the World. The event is being staged by Artistes International Management (AIM). slimmer who transformed her life by losing 7 stone is using her success to shape a whole new career helping people in Greenwich change their lives and achieve their weight loss dreams too.
Amy Smith, 29, joined Slimming World group in Essex seven years ago before moving back to London and joining a local group in Bethnal Green. Initially weighing in at 18 stone, she dropped from 14st 10 ½lbs to 10st 10 ½ lbs to reach her initial target of 100lbs, after already having lost over 3 stone. Now, the Surrey Quays local who trains at Fitness Space, has trained as a consultant for Slimming World, the UK’s largest groupbased weight loss organisation, at their national training academy in Derbyshire. Members at Slimming World’s Greenwich group are getting ready to welcome Amy as their new Consultant when she takes over on Monday 31 December. The latest government figures reveal that around one in four adults are obese and it is estimated that, by 2034, this will increase to one in three. 58.9 percent of Greenwich’s population is now overweight or obese, and Amy says her new role has never been more important. “Obesity is becoming such a huge issue across the UK,” she said. “When I first joined Slimming World as a member, I never dreamed that I would end up helping other people to lose weight but now I just can’t wait to get started. After losing 3stone and completing my training, it’s a privilege for me to be able to pass on the experience, insight and understanding that helped me, so that I can give my members the support they need to get to target.” “Support is really the most important thing. It all starts with feeling that you’re not alone. I couldn’t have lost that 4 stone without the weekly help, encouragement and understanding of my own consultant and group. As someone who has lost weight myself I know the challenges people can face, which is why, along with the group, I will be there to support every one of my members all the way to their chosen target weight. Setting targets, sharing recipes and other ideas, and working together as a group to overcome challenges and celebrate success is so important to a successful journey. That’s why, at my Slimming World group, there’ll be tons of support, encouragement and fun. “Like a lot of slimmers, I had tried to lose weight so many times before by following numerous diets but they were never sustainable because I’d always get tired of restricting what I ate. Alex Reid packs a punch in LGBTQ play A
new play, at Deptford Heritage festival, tells the story of how the LGBTQ and civil rights movement was established in 1930s Britain, writes Laura Burgoine...
Based on historical sources, Liberty follows activist Kath Duncan, whose two jail terms laid the groundwork for the National Council Civil Liberties (now known as Liberty) and the freedoms we all enjoy today. Red Blouse Theatre, a local radical theatre company first formed in the 1930s and newly re-formed for the festival. Directed by acclaimed Scottish director Karen Douglas, the cast of Liberty includes Emily Carding, who plays Kath Duncan and Celebrity Big Brother winner Alex Reid playing Fred Copeman. Although it is not a musical, the play contains several

songs, one of which, Forbidden Love, is a duet between the two gay characters in the play whose sentencing to a fifth jail term for a total of 12 years just for looking gay led to the events portrayed in the play. Liberty is the first play to be staged in the UK using social media in real time as part of the performance. Liberty runs from February 14-28 with a celebrity charity gala opening night Valentine’s Day, which will see the largest UK gathering of LGBTQ and Civil Rights activists especially women in the country to remember and celebrate in year 100 years of Women Activism. The 3rd International Deptford Heritage Festival is London’s largest heritage festival, running from February 1-28, which includes the global #LGBTQ
History Month. The festival brings together the country’s leading experts on people such as Lord Nelson, Christopher Marlowe, Peter the Great, the MacMillan sisters, Kath Duncan, and Olaudan Equiano, whose lives in Deptford have not just shaped the history of Deptford but of the whole world. Local schools, community groups, choirs, artists, writers, performers, poets, musicians, historians, and local residents of all ages and diversity are uniting to celebrate community and working class history. Tickets for #Liberty cost £15 and give free access to all other festival events except for the History Tour Bus. Tickets to the opening night celebrity gala on 14 February cost £25.

Pan-Asian perfection I
f a new restaurant opens I expect it to be doing something different to what is already in that area or doing it better. Greenwich’s new Pan-Asian restaurant Toomai Square ticks both of those boxes and more, writes Michael Holland...
Toomai Square
Kumar and his executive chef brother Bhola wanted to combine the cuisine from their Indian roots with the cooking methods of the Chinese and the excitement of Thai food, and this is all happening at Toomai Square where all three influences can be found - sometimes in just one dish. Me and Mum rocked up on a cold, wet Saturday and were met with warm, welcoming smiles and a table by the huge windows where we could watch the world go by. Kumar and Bhola asked if they could bring us a selection of dishes to try and we instantly agreed because I knew that I would get to taste something that I normally wouldn’t order, and I was right. First some liquid refreshment. Mum had water because she’s very healthy these days and I had a naughty cocktail called White Choc Martini, which was heaven in a glass; liquid chocolate to die for but I knew I could only have one. And then the starters began arriving. We began with vegetable spring rolls and tempura prawn, both with their own dips, and both good. Then came Paneer chili, a dish that would always slip below my radar. It was beautiful, the sauce was like no other I had come across before. And Mum, who is slowly transitioning to a vegetarian diet, said this would make the change much easier. Chicken lollipops followed with a dip that was out of this world. The only ingredient I could confidently identify was a vinegar in there somewhere. Delicious. I was informed that Bhola creates all his own sauces and dips and I can believe that wholeheartedly. Pepper Chili lamb was next, strips of tender meat, perfectly spiced. I could have gone a bit hotter but that may have taken away the subtleness of the dish. Finally, honey chili veg, the chef’s recommendation. These were a mix between a bhaji and a pattie. Mum fell in love with them, and were another that I would not normally order. We needed a rest at this point but Kumar talked us into a bowl of Tom Kha, a wonderful coconut soup with oyster mushrooms and prawns. This was the pure taste of Thailand; truly a thing of beauty. Finally there was some respite from the food while we chatted with Kumar and Sayantan, the PR man, about future plans and how the restaurant was named after Toomai, a young elephant in a traditional Indian story from the brothers’ childhood. But before long we were off again as lamb shank massaman was placed before us. It looked good and

it was good. Extremely good. Then a chicken green curry came and a plate of prawn Pad Thai and I had to shout, “Stop!” I also asked our lovely waitress not to mention the word dessert. A lie down beckoned after such feasting, so Mum finished her water while I finished off a Tsingtao lager before we left with a mountain of food the kitchen boxed up for us to take away. The trip home was one of wonder and delight as we discussed each dish and picked personal favourites. Toomai Square is the ideal addition to this part of Greenwich. It is bright, modern and comes with new ideas and flavours. The staff are pleasant and the team behind it are passionate about what they do. Mum’s already worked out that the 286 bus gets her from door to door and is planning to return for another plate of Paneer chili - but without having to share it with me.
