Greenwich's famed live advent calendar returns C
onstellations, angels and sheep in space are just some of the sights you'll find framed in the windows of Greenwich in the run up to Christmas, writes Holly O'Mahony...
Now in its twelfth year, Greenwich’s Advent Windows sees 24 windows across Greenwich town centre come to life with a unique display centred around one main theme, which this year is Field of Dreams. Over the course of the event, which is organised by St. Alfege Church, one new window will be revealed each day between December 1 – 24. Those keen to browse the Advent Windows can pick up a map and wander between the various displays, which will remain on show until January 2 2019. “The genius behind the idea of Advent Windows is Gill Moody, the wife of Reverend Chris Moody, the vicar of St. Alfege’s Church,” says Maureen Stapleton, Advent Windows Coordinator. “In 2007, she thought it would be a fun idea to create a live Advent calendar on the streets of Greenwich, with a different location decorating a window during each day of Advent.” Now in its 12th year, the window displays have become a Greenwich tradition the local community look forward to every year, and for many, a welcome alternative to shop bought chocolate calendars. Materials used by participants to create their window varies hugely, with models, sculptures, collages and even multimedia installations all being used in the past. “Every year seems to have one standout window that everyone talks about that year,” muses Maureen. She herself has created a window display for the Advent Windows since the project began in 2007. Some of the most memorable window displays of past years have featured inflatable boats filled with dolls to represent the refugee crisis; a six-foot tall Big Ben made out of papier-mâché; a large-scale song sheet for 'Hark the Herald Angel Sing' (with the correct musical notes); and a neon mural highlighting the medical workers during the Ebola crisis. This year’s theme, Field of Dreams, was inspired by Reverend Moody’s trip to Bethlehem and also Phil Alden Robinson's film by the same name. “In Bethlehem, Reverend Moody visited Shepherd’s Field Chapel, which, according to tradition, marks the place where the angels first announced the birth of Christ,” explains Maureen.

“He was struck by the location of the chapel, which is in Palestine but where you can also see Israeli settlements. Given that the shepherds were marginalised in their own society but were the first people to hear the Christmas news, Reverend Moody said it is a reminder that no matter how dark things seem to be, one should never give up hope,” she says. “Similarly, Field of Dreams is a film filled with crazy schemes –
such as building a baseball field in the middle of nowhere – but it concludes with redemption.” Among those participating in 2018's Advent Windows is a core group who take part every year. “For that, we’re very grateful,” says Maureen. “The local schools have done it every year since the beginning, as have several families.” Other regular contributors include the Ben Oakley Gallery, Karen Woolven
Flowers, Greenwich Station and the Cutty Sark. “We’re always on the lookout for people who want to do it,” she adds. “The only requirement is that you have to live within the parish boundaries of St. Alfege Church.” As for individuals taking part, the project largely appeals to artists and those with a “creative bent”, according to Maureen. “But artistic talent is not a requirement – enthusiasm for bringing the
Christmas spirit to the streets of Greenwich is,” she says. The good news for those hoping to browse all windows within a day is that it's certainly possible to do so; visitors can see all 24 windows in three hours if they plan their route wisely. “Plan a route that makes geographical sense. If you do the route in numerical order you’ll be criss-crossing Greenwich all day,” Maureen cautions. “My family has a tradition of walking around to see them all between Christmas and New Year,” she says, revealing that they always finish their expedition with a trip to Richard the First Pub. “It’d be rude not to stop there for a pint since they do a window,” she adds. To get the most out of the display, Maureen recommends picking up a map – available from St. Alfege Church, the Tourist Information Centre and West Greenwich Library – or downloading one from the Advent Windows website. Another thing worth researching is whether individual windows are best seen in daylight or at nighttime. “I hope [Advent Windows] help people get into the Christmas spirit, while also appreciating the wonderful community of Greenwich,” concludes Maureen. “It’s a very non-commercial way to celebrate Christmas, which is why I think so many people love it. It also allows Greenwich to show its great community spirit and is yet another reason why Christmas in London really is the best.” Greenwich Advent Windows will be on display until January 2 2019. ow Gallery’s latest exhibition Rinse, Repeat, is now open to the public. Created by fashion designer Richard Malone, who is the gallery’s winter colaborator this year, the exhibition is an interactive, multi-disciplinary installation made up of three elements, which together create a conversation around fashion, movement and art, writes Holly O’Mahony...
Despite being just 26 years old, Malone’s designs have been showcased on several London Fashion Week catwalks, while Malone has been profiled several times in Vogue. The aim with Rinse, Repeat, he says, is to highlight the ever changing functionality and potential of Greenwich Peninsula. “The aim of this installation is to literally light up the peninsula with a body of work that is human, joyful, bold, creative and inclusive,” he says. “The exhibition confronts viewers from outside-in with hypnotic and repetitive movements, as well as improvised, bold moments of motion that stem from the dialogue between maker and performer.” Rinse, Repeat is, in part, an interactive exhibition. Visitors can try on Malone designs, browse his sketchbooks and listen to sound recordings from interviews with women who influence him – among whom are the architect Farshid Moussavi, fashion writer Sinead Burke, and Malone’s own grandmother Nellie Malone. “For me, it’s really important that people can feel involved in what making fashion is,” Malone says. The exhibition is also the first at the gallery to include moving imagery. As part of Malone’s installation, a series of moving images will show performers repeating hypnotic movements, designed to invite the public to examine the reality of making and building around the human form. “We loved that Richard had this connection to dance and saw
the work of acclaimed fashion designer richard malone comes to Now gallery his fashion relating to another art form,” says NOW Gallery curator Jemima Burrill. “Richard Malone is someone whose work has been on my radar for it’s sculptural dimension,” she says. “His attention to detail and the way his clothes expand beyond the body as a form made us think he would create work to
challenge how we see fashion.” Burrill hopes the exhibition will allow visitors to see the process of a fashion designer through carefully curated vitrines of sketches, textiles and photographs. For Malone, it’s also, in part, about showcasing the many different forms fashion can take. “I hope Rinse, Repeat
gives visitors an understanding of all of the different ideas and outcomes that fashion can be; that it’s not always a show,” he says. “Also, I hope it gives them an insight into the process of making new collections, forms or silhouettes.”

lantern making, Christmas tree lighting and fireworks at woolwich winter warmer The annual Woolwich Winter Warmer is being held on Saturday December 1. The event, which has been running for over 15 years, is free to attend and a celebration of both the festive season and the Woolwich community, writes Holly O’Mahony... Things kick off with a children’s lantern-making workshop, which will run from 11:30am – 2:30pm at Woolwich Library on Wellington Street. The main event will run from 12pm – 6pm, with most of the action

-– including the lighting of the Christmas tree, carol singing and the fireworks display – taking place between General Gordon Square and Artillery Square. “In the last three years, the route has been extended to include the Royal Arsenal, to form a link between the two areas,” says a representative of Royal Greenwich’s media desk. “The Royal Arsenal hold their own event – A RARE [Royal Arsenal Riverside Explore] Christmas on the same day to reinforce this connection.”
The event is about enabling the local community to come together to celebrate the festive season. “The parade workshop engagement programme caters for over 300 local school children. Then there’s the music stage in General Gordon Square, which enables local musicians and community art groups to perform for the community.” Many of the stalls at the Woolwich Winter Warmer also have a socially conscious ethos at their core. The Greenwich Co-operative Development
Agency (GCDA) is running a Surplus Feast, serving hot food to visitors for a small donation and demonstrating how healthy, meat-free dishes can be created from inexpensive ingredients. Meanwhile, the Stay Warm Stay Safe team is running an information stall on how to keep warm in cold weather. Other attractions at the event include an ice carving display, a Christmas craft workshop focusing on recycled materials and a giant colouring cube. There will also be a face painter and fairground rides to thrill

SWING INTO CHRISTMAS AT THE BOB HOPE THEATRE A
s true fans of Christmas songs will be keenly aware, December 1 marks the first date that it’s officially acceptable to turn the volume up on your favourite festive playlist and, if you’re that way inclined, sing along at the top if your lungs. If your idea of a good night out is doing exactly that, whilst surrounded by a room of fellow merrymakers, than head to the Bob Hope Theatre in Eltham this Saturday, where Shane Hampsheir is performing his solo show: Shane Hampsheir’s Christmas Swingalong, writes Holly O’Mahony…
The night promises to deliver the very best from the Christmas classical and jazz songbooks. “The band and I will perform hits from Sinatra, Bing Crosby and other iconic voices of the 20th century,” says Shane. “We’ll perform songs such as Dean Martin’s ‘Let It Snow’, Nat ‘King’ Cole’s ’The Christmas Song’ and some traditional Christmas must-haves, including ‘Away in a Manger’, ‘God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen’ and ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’.” Audience members will be provided with song books and Christmas presents will be handed out to a lucky few as the night goes on. Shane, who’s originally from Dartford but now lives in Bromley, has been a full-time singer now for 13 years. He’s performed on cruise ships, in hotels, at weddings and in venues throughout London – including the prestigious Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in Soho. Shane always wanted to be a singer. Growing up, he was inspired by boy bands including Westlife and the Backstreet Boys but above all, he looked up to Robbie Williams, whose TV special at the Royal Albert Hall in 2001 opened Shane’s eyes to the worlds of jazz, big band swing and the Great American Songbook. Shane began performing his own one-man swing and big band shows in 2005 when he was 17 years old, and attributes much of his motivation and success to the Bob Hope Theatre. “In my first and second years of college, I heard about these amateur dramatics companies in and around Bromley,” says Shane. “One of them was performing Gershwin’s musical Crazy For You, which I had never heard of but auditioned for, nonetheless,” he recalls. “It was staged at the Bob Hope Theatre and thus began my love for performing at this intimate venue and getting to know its staff.” For Shane, the accessibility of

"I can’t wait to bring a fun-packed, energetic and, at times, silly show to this incredible and iconic venue once more.” the Bob Hope Theatre has been as a blessing. “It’s been a great platform to reach a local audience and be able to showcase my music and passion for this style of entertainment,” he says. A second factor Shane attributes to his success was the support of his father in getting his career off the ground. Following college, Shane soon became busy singing at Christmas dinners and with concert bands – including Greenwich Concert Band – but found he had little time to pursue the projects and concerts that interested him most. “My dad and I decided that we would produce our own Christmas concert that worked with my schedule, and allowed me to present these timeless festive classics to anyone who wanted to get into the Christmas spirit near the beginning of December,” he says. It was Shane’s father who later secured his audition with an entertainment agency, which led to work performing in local pubs, at working men’s clubs and at social clubs. “I knew then that I was on the right track,” he says. While Shane still held a candle to Robbie, by then his musical taste had evolved to incorporate the likes of Frank Sinatra, Dean

Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and Tony Bennett. I couldn’t help but ask whether Michael Bublé, whose singing voices bares sizeable similarities to Shane’s, had been much of an influence. “Bublé came on the scene in the mid noughties,” Shane reminds me. “His cover of ‘Feeling Good’ is one of my very favourite recordings and was the real inspiration behind my album track, ‘I Put A Spell On You’,” he adds. “I’m just sad that it seems as though there’s only room at the top for one male big band singer but, at least there’s Bublé.” At the time of writing, Shane Hampsheir’s Christmas Swingalong is all that’s been announced by way of festive shows this year at Bob Hope Theatre. Is Shane feeling the pressure of presenting the venue’s only Christmas show? “To get into the theatre at all during such a busy season is really an honour,” he says, modestly. “It gives me an opportunity to bring warmth, Christmas cheer and festive melodies to my Eltham audience. I can’t wait to bring a fun-packed, energetic and, at times, silly show to this incredible and iconic venue once more.” ‘What’s your favourite festive
number?’ I can’t help but ask. “My personal favourite is ‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas’,” he reveals. (Good choice, I think.) “It’s the perfect melody and intricately written. Screenings and big questions answered at the Royal Observatory
I
f you’re a lover of science fiction movies and find they leave you desperate to dissect them afterwards, then the Royal Observatory’s monthly Silver Screen Science Fiction series is worth having on your radar, writes Holly O’Mahony... The offering is formulaic: each month, a cult blockbuster sci-fi movie is screened in the observatory’s planetarium, followed by a short talk on the science behind the fiction delivered by one of the Royal Observatory’s astronomers. Next up, on December 1, is Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017), the eighth and most recent film in the main Star Wars franchise. The plot follows Rey (Daisy Ridley) who is undergoing Jedi training from Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), in the hope of turning the tide for the Resistance in the fight against Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and the First Order. General Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher), Finn (John Boyega) and Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac), meanwhile, are attempting to escape a First Order attack on the Resistance fleet. In true Silver Screen Science Fiction form, the screening will be followed by a talk on the physics

of space dogfights, remote projections and how to build a lightsaber. “Silver Screen Science Fiction is a great, non-academic forum for chatting about things in what we hope is an entertaining way,” says Dr Edward Bloomer, an Astronomer at the Royal Observatory. “The flight of imagination in any new Star Wars film gives us the chance to discuss new worlds, new technologies and new creatures; there's a lot for us to chew on.” For Dr Bloomer, the screenings
are also an important tool for reminding people that the observatory is somewhere you can go and talk to astronomers. “Questions from the audience are part of the fun, and sometimes they produce a fresh set of things to discuss – more science to talk about, or ideas on which films to add to our lists,” he says. The sci-fi screenings fit with the Royal Observatory’s primary focus on public engagement and education. The institution is keen to make astronomy exciting and accessible to the public, and the
movie nights are one of several ways the astronomers look to achieve this aim. “We've been doing one-off talks about the science behind popular culture for quite a while, but a couple of years ago we decided to make it a regular event in our planetarium,” explains Dr Bloomer. “Screening sci-fi movies (occasionally straying into other genres, too), and following these up with short talks about the 'science behind the fiction' is a relaxed way to get a dose of entertainment mixed up with some facts and discussion,” he says.
The decision as to which films to screen often come about as the result of “rambling chats” between the astronomers in the office. “Sometimes we think a film will tie in nicely with something else happening on-site, so we can approach a similar topic from a different angle, and sometimes we choose a film that is relevant because of a development in astronomy or another area of science,” says Dr Bloomer. “Other times, we look at films that let us talk about what has changed since they were made, and there have been quite a few that are hopeless from a scientific point of view, but give us a launching pad to discuss interesting ideas,” he admits. So, why go with The Last Jedi for this month’s screening? “As we head towards the holidays, watching an action-packed blockbuster in the planetarium is a pretty enjoyable way to spend an evening, we think!” Dr Bloomer laughs. Blink and you'll miss this tiny culinary gem You wouldn’t know Hullabaloo was there unless you were looking for it. Despite its Deptford High Street address, the tiny, almost-vegan Indian restaurant – just three tables and counter seating – is actually tucked around the corner on Douglas Way, writes Holly O'Mahony...
Thankfully, a friend had tipped me off. What she’d said was Hullabaloo is the place to go in Deptford for decent Indian food. Hullabaloo looks nothing like your typical Indian restaurant found on your typical UK high street. Plush, carpeted interiors have been swapped for wooden floors and surfaces, while there’s not a formal, clinicallywhite tablecloth in sight – instead the wooden tables lay bare and exposed. Lending itself to western hippy vibes, the restaurant is kitted out with rustic cutlery pots, exposed lightbulbs hanging from ropes and a scattering of houseplants. While Indian inflections can be heard in the playlist and seen in a spread of retro Bollywood film posters smothering the walls. The result is amiable, trendy and refreshing. On the dark and drizzly autumn night of our visit, the warm glow from the restaurant’s windows was a pleasing sight. This warmth was followed through by Baloo, the restaurant’s founder and head chef, who was all smiles and handshakes as soon as we pushed open the door. Before opening Hullabaloo in 2017, Baloo had previously worked in Mayfair’s Tamarind – one of the first Indian restaurants in the world to receive a Michelin star. He’d also worked with twice Michelin starred chef and TV personality Atul Kochhar. Baloo was late to finding his way in the kitchen, though. Born and raised in Ambala, into a big and very traditional Indian family, he lived by the status quo that dictated women do the cooking and men enjoy the eating. Following school, Baloo studied Hotel Management in Delhi. “To be honest, at that time I couldn’t cook anything,” he admits. Baloo ended up working as a hotel shift manager but a few months in, found his fascination lay within the kitchen, so he began training to be a chef. “After a while I managed to land a job working as a chef in one of India's most famous 5 star hotels – The Oberoi in Delhi, where I spent the next few years learning my trade,”

Baloo had previously worked in Mayfair's Tamarind - one of the first Indian restaurants in the world to receive a Michelin star he says. Then one day, an offer came out of the blue to move to the UK and work for Mogul, an Indian restaurant in Greenwich. Ten years later and Baloo has been living in London ever since. Having been a vegetarian all his life, making his own restaurant meatfree was an obvious choice. Deptford was also a given for Baloo, since the area had become his second home since moving to the UK. Hullabaloo’s menu is actually entirely vegan bar the dishes that come with paneer – a soft, Indian cheese. There’s also no booze license here, but diners can bring their own or make do with canned soft drinks, masala chai or a non-vegan mango lassi.
We began our meal with a couple of starters, opting for an onion bhaji and a portion of Paneer Shaslik. The bhaji arrived on a slate, sliced and drizzled with a sweet and fragrant chutney, like a small plate in a fine dining institution. We were off to a good start. The paneer followed, arriving in a similar format and punctuated with chargrilled peppers and onions. The slabs of cheese themselves were fresh and pleasingly ungreasy. Nourishment came in the form of the Veg Saadwala – a muddle of spinach, spices and tofu – while the Veg Chilli Masala, which we opted to add paneer to, was smoky, slightly tangy and thankfully not too
spicy. A generous plate of Peshawari naan was fluffy and heavy on the coconut – rightly so. But the star of the show, for me, was the Dal Makhani – slow cooked black bean lentils with tomato and fenugreek – which was buttery and silky enough to give Dishoom’s acclaimed House Black Daal a run for its money. While those who are oblivious to Hullabaloo’s existence probably haven’t noticed it before, the restaurant has built up a loyal crowd of regular customers since opening a year-and-a-half ago. On the night of our visit, the little joint was packed by 7pm. Our advice? Join the crowds and dig in.

Woolwich Christmas tree Woolwich will be lighting up the night at the Christmas tree lighting and lantern parade this 1 December. There will be live entertainment, a lantern parade, street performers and a grand fireworks finale. The recycle-themed lantern parade will pass through Gordon Square and head to Royal Arsenal riverside for the firework finale show. A free lantern making workshop will be held earlier in the day from 11.30 am to 2.30 pm in Woolwich Library for any children who want to participate in the parade. There will be free parking in all the council run car parks. Christmas in Thamesmead
Enchanted Eltham Eltham Palace and Gardens will be transformed into an enchanting winter wonderland covered in lights and decorations, writes Hannah Kanik... They will use light, colour and sound to create the magical mazes and trails. The ancient moat will host a choreographed fountain show that will make the water rise and fall in conjunction with the music. After exploring the grounds, guests can

Watch the Christmas lights illuminate the night at the Thamesmead Clocktower switch on show. Residents of the area can experience the decorations light up the town with festive cheer. There will be a hot chocolate and mince pie give away, food and drink stalls and live entertainment. The whole family can enjoy the children’s fairground rides and craft stalls as they wander through the lit up streets of Thamesmead. The event is being run by Greenwich Council who are partnering with Peabody housing. The event will be free and runs from 4 pm to 7 pm on 30 November. SEA LIFE London has hatched the perfect Christmas plan with Penguin’s First Christmas. Following the birth of its Gentoo penguin chick earlier this year, the south bank attraction is inviting guests to celebrate Christmas with the aquarium’s residents as they prepare to give the chick a first Christmas to remember. Guests in search of snow and seasonal fun will have the chance to help a group of elves find the missing gifts for the feathered fledgling which have been lost inside the attraction.
