ON PARADE Follow the adventures, comedy and tragedy of a group of performers touring the jungle while being menaced by communist guerrillas in Privates on Parade at Bob Hope theatre.

PIN-UP PARKS The Royal Parks has launched its first ever calendar just in time for Christmas with all the proceeds going back into supporting and maintaining the parks.

Each month features a photo hand-selected from entries to the charity’s 2018 photo competition. Three quarters of the calendar months feature animals – from deer and hoverflies, to mute swans and rarely-seen grass snakes. Park visitors submitted over 350 photos to the charity’s inaugural photo competition, and submissions were judged by experts from BBC Wildlife Magazine, The Serpentine Gallery and design agency Greywolf Studios.

REPEAT AFTER ME NOW Gallery’s newest exhibition is a winter collaboration with acclaimed fashion designer, Richard Malone. Inspired by the constant fluidity of the changing landscape of Greenwich Peninsula and the cyclical motion of the River Thames, Rinse Repeat is an interactive multi-disciplinary installation made up of three elements, creating a conversation around fashion, movement and art. Open from 28 November27 January, the installation includes a series of large moving images showing performers repeating hypnotic movements.

WINTER LANTERNS FOR SE9 See the lights on Eltham High Street switch on at the Eltham High Street Winter Lantern Festival. The event, on November 15, begins at 4 pm and goes until 7 pm. The lights will switch on at 6pm when a fantastic illuminated parade of lanterns made by local families will light up the night.

The parade ends with a dramatic firework display. There will be street performers, live music and special promotions from local businesses.

This year’s theme is twelve days of Christmas. Admission: free.

Free Canaries in Woolwich Arsenal T

he Canaries is an original play highlighting the huge contribution made by women in the First World War, writes Michael Holland.

The performance is staged by local group, Global Fusion Music and Arts (GFMA) at Building 41, Woolwich Arsenal, which is one of the few remaining buildings women worked in during the First World War. The show is part of a series of centenary commemorations run by GFMA throughout November. The play, written by GFMA’s project manager, Louisa Le Marchand, is being directed by James Haddrell, Greenwich Theatre’s artistic and executive director.

Louisa said: “We focused on the men and their contribution to WW1 in 2014 with a play by another local playwright Robert Fanshawe. His play about Wilfred Owen - All About The Boys - was a huge success and was attended by Wilfred Owen’s nephew. For that reason I felt that this year we would show the huge contribution that women made to the Great War here in Woolwich. The play has all the elements of great theatre, life, death and comedy and shows the camaraderie of women working together in harsh conditions and through the massive social changes of these times.”

James Haddrell added: “It’s been a pleasure working with GFMA to share an important story about our local history that is so rarely told. Exploring

the journey of the women of Woolwich Royal Arsenal through the hardships of war, love, laughter and companionship has been both humbling and fascinating.”

The Canaries is part of a series of GFMA events that started with a poetry, spoken word and music night at the Earl of Chatham pub in Woolwich on November 1.

on Friday, November 23 in The Grand Salon, Charlton House, which was itself a WW1 military hospital. Entrance is £3 voluntary donation and the film starts at 7.30pm.

day full of songs and storytelling exclusively for toddlers and their grownups will be held aboard the Cutty Sark in November, writes Hannah Kanik...

There will be craft activities, toys and story bags to borrow and play with on the ship. Olivia Armstrong will be enchanting audiences with her gift of storytelling as well.

The toddler takeover launched in January of 2015 and has had a successful turnout each year. They also host two toddler events every Wednesday during term time from 10 – 11.30 am and 1.20 – 2.50 pm.

The Cutty Sark crew is excited to involve the Greenwich schoolchildren in the event and help them develop confidence, skills and a sense of ownership, according to the Royal Museums Greenwich staff.

Blackheath Centre for singing hits right note

oel Thomas founded the Blackheath Centre for Singing six years ago. The Blackheath local, who studied at the Royal Northern College of Music as an instrumentalist before moving into conducting, now conducts ten choirs a week, writes Laura Burgoine...

“In many ways our Centre is run by the community for the community,” Joel told the Weekender.

Eighty singers from five choirs rehearse there each week. “They all rehearse at different paces and explore different genres of music,” Joel said. “We have choirs for complete beginners, up to chamber for professionals where several members are music graduates.”

It’s a very social choir with events and concerts every term. “We’re open to everyone, anyone who wants to pitch up is welcome,” Joel said. The Centre holds quiz nights to raise funds for its musicals.

The choir does a lot of collaborations, recently performing in Hampshire with a local choir and traveling to France for a tour. People come from Greenwich, Lewisham, Eltham and Deptford as well as further afield to take part.

“Another thing I’m proud of is the wide range of ages of our members,” Joel said. There’s now a choir for 7-11 year olds running every Tuesday at 4pm

during term-time. “Children are so enthusiastic at that age.”

The Centre welcomes singers of all abilities. “All the choirs rehearse at different paces and explore different genres. The complete beginners group is ideal for people who have never sung before or who are returning to it after a long absence or are very nervous,” Joel said.

“It’s a real pleasure to teach these choirs. I have colleagues who work with me. We’re constantly attracting new members and this term we have more members than ever. We’re very pleased; people tend to stay with us.”

On December 1 there’s a Come and Sing afternoon at Mycenae House open to newcomers and led by guest workshop leaders.

Singers go through a repertoire of jazz, pop and gospel music.

“It’s very relaxed. The ability to read music is not a requirement and we have a visiting Portuguese choir joining us,” Joel said. Tickets are available at blackheathcentreforsinging. com “Our biggest project this term

is the Christmas concert at St Margaret’s church. It’s a big event with an orchestra and we’re performing Christmas Oratorio by Bach,” Joel said.

The conductor insists that everyone can sing. “The beginner’s choir explores bite sized pieces. A lot of music in the beginners choir is taught by ear; folk music, classical, world.” The intermediate choir is about singing for pleasure and rehearses at a quicker pace where people can really progress. They explore larger classical works. The advanced choir is often music graduates and young professionals with music ranging from renaissance to contemporary.

The Chamber choir concert, featuring the Centre’s advanced singers, is at Charlton United Reformed Church, Bramshot Avenue, SE7 7HX, on 17 November at 7:30pm.

The Christmas Concert is at St Margaret’s Church, Lee Terrace, SE13 5DL, on December 15.

es, Andrew Pollard is once again at the helm of the Greenwich Theatre panto for the 14th time where he will be stirring up a shipwrecking storm as the Dame in Robinson Crusoe, the latest in his self-penned pantos, Michael Holland...

Greenwich’s greatest Dame lives on the border between Lancashire and Yorkshire, not too far from where he was born in Ashton-under-Lyne where his grandparents were involved with shows at the local church.

It was where he first realised he wanted to be an actor. “I was always fascinated by any kind of performance, whether it was variety, entertainment or films but the only theatre I was taken to as a kid was the local church amateur shows - I loved them - The first amateur panto I performed in was Puss in Boots when I was a kid.”

Once Andrew’s mind was made up he went off to do a Drama Degree at Crewe and Alsager College of Higher Education and then later trained at the prestigious Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.

Andrew’s career has now taken him all over the country and he has built up a fount of knowledge and experience. I wanted to know the greatest lesson he has ever learnt about acting: “Listen.

Listen to your fellow performers - and in comedy, listen to the audience. Acting is reacting.”

He tells me these lessons were learnt at at Bristol Old Vic but he emphasised that “you learn from doing so I've learnt from working with fellow professionals.” He then adds, “I used to watch lots of comedy films when I was a kid, Laurel and Hardy, Ealing Comedies, etc. I learnt a lot from those performers.”

I asked if his parents were behind his choice of such a precarious profession: “Yes,

they've been pretty supportive, though I suppose worried on occasion about how and if I'd make a living.”

I didn’t ask how much of a living this Grand Dame is making but he told me that he first got into writing professional children's shows and small-scale pantos in Manchester “but it was Greenwich Theatre that asked me if I'd like to write a full scale panto!” He now writes for various professional companies up and down the country and this year alone Andrew has written for Watford Palace, Queen's Theatre, Hornchurch, Salisbury Playhouse and the Lawrence Batley Theatre in Huddersfield.

And so to this year’s panto, a subject Andrew could talk forever about. “This year we're doing Robinson Crusoe,” begins the man already looking like Christmas has arrived. “I'm very excited about this panto.

It's a great adventure story - a real romp - with lots of great

performers who have worked with us before - and I'm back as Dame after a year off, which I'm really looking forward to.”

I know the theatre uses several young actors from local drama schools, at the beginning of their careers, for the annual panto.

What advice does this veteran have for them? “Tenacity. It’s a marathon not a sprint. You may not get great work straight away but you just have to take what comes and keep chipping away.”

Along with Andrew as Camilla Crusoe will be Anthony Spargo as the baddie, Captain Gingerbeard. Spargo is another Greenwich staple and probably one of the best baddies in town.

With those two tearing up the stage you know there will be a lot of innuendo and double entendre, and I was about to say we are all grateful for the work that Mr Pollard puts in each year to make our Christmases special, but Ms Crusoe was off again: “It is a real adventure

story full of pirates, a sea voyage, the discovery of a new land and a host of crazy characters, and of course it will have the same West End quality musical theatre performers that are always attracted to the Greenwich pantomime. It’s also set to be one of our funniest yet, and not just for the children.

Greenwich is the perfect venue to see panto - especially for kids - as it’s not too large and there are no bad sightlines. Our aim is to try and make it a party for everyone.”

I’ve got my ticket booked. Oh yes I have!

ill’s is a new addition to the abundance of restaurants in Greenwich and fits nicely into the mid-range market, writes Michael Holland...

It is part of a chain but sounds like a local cafe, and in reality it began as a greengrocers in Lewes, East Sussex, just a few years ago, but after a flood a cafe was added to the shop.

Me and Mum rocked up to find Bill’s has claimed a prime spot on the one-way system, with big windows offering views over St Alfege’s, the church designed

by Hawksmoor, from both its floors. We sat downstairs where we could people-watch as well as admire the decor that jumps from industrial to palm court frippery in the twinkling of a waitress’s eye. And that waitress was Vivienne, a smiling charmer who fulfilled our every wish and desire.

We began with a selection of starters and drinks. I had a bottle of Bill’s IPA, a tasty brew made by Adnams, while Mum went for a Chilean Merlot. Soon after an array of dishes was laid before us: Gordal olives; calamari with a garlic and lemon aioli dip; pork dumplings with smoked chili and soy dip. The olives were giant mouthfuls of sharp flavour, and the dumplings were matched with the perfect dip.

Bill's is a recipe for success for my liking but the aioli was scrumptious and we polished them all off.

For my main course I chose the Kashmiri lamb shank that came with a really nice coconut rice and a creamy sauce. The meat fell away from the bone and melted in the mouth. Mum strangely went for the pan fried chicken with truffle and wild mushrooms. I say strangely because she never orders chicken and never buys chicken breasts to cook at home. All of a sudden she’s telling me and Vivienne and anyone walking past willing to listen, that this is the best chicken she’s ever had and will now be buying it more often to cook indoors!

Mum celebrated this born again experience with another merlot and I joined her.

As the sun set and the night darkened outside, a lady was doing the rounds lighting the table candles. Suddenly the lights were turned down and we were plunged into almost total darkness, just a few flickering table lights offering very little in the way of illumination. I could not see what was on my plate and was left fumbling around with my cutlery in the dark.

Perhaps it was supposed to be ‘mood lighting’ but if I was on a date I’d at least like to see who I was on a date with. Losing the sense of sight meant another one was heightened so now I could smell the succulence of the lamb and curry sauce even more than before, but could now feel lots of food landing on the front of my shirt as I tried to eat with impaired vision.

For an early sitting Bill’s was quite full; evidence that it has made an impact in the short while it has been open in Greenwich. The menu is pretty standard for a chain restaurant but the service seems to take it up a notch, which is always good. Vivienne appeared asking if we wanted to see the dessert menu, which could have been a cue for a joke about the lighting but I resisted.

Besides, Mum has recently had her cataracts done so can see for miles and miles and definitely as far as the apple crumble with vanilla ice cream and custard, which went down a treat to round off the meal.

Bill’s has risen fast in a short time by giving people what they want. It’s a recipe for success.

History

Charlton Assembly Rooms

A

fter being saved from demolition in 1971, the Charlton Assembly Rooms have, after 47 years, been given a Grade II heritage listing. Chairman and founder member of Save Charlton Assembly Rooms Project Gwen Zammit shared the building’s rich history with the Greenwich & Lewisham Weekender.

Spencer, the eldest son of Sir Spencer Maryon Wilson, 10th Bart, celebrated his coming of age on 19th July 1880 by laying a 16 inch by 20 inch foundation stone for The Assembly Rooms, a new public hall, sited at the eastern end of The Village in Charlton. A dinner in celebration was held at Charlton House, followed by various sporting events held in the park.

John Rowland, architect and resident in the Parish, designed The Assembly Rooms, which were built from Sussex red bricks with a slate roof, by William Tamsett who resided in The Village. The building was formally opened by Dowager Lady Wilson on Tuesday, 26th April 1881, by cutting a ribbon tied to the porch doors.

Afterward, in celebration, a formal concert took place. At that time, Sir Spencer stated that all profits accruing from The Assembly Rooms were to be devoted to local charitable purposes and the Rector of St Luke's Church would be responsible for the lettings. The hall, at that time, had a seating capacity of 300 people, but due to present day safety requirements, this has now been reduced to 200. There was a wide stage in the main hall with two smaller rooms at the rear of building, with a kitchen and usual offices behind the stage. It was lit and heated by gas. Electric lighting was installed during the early 1930s. The building was leased at that time to

Since the opening of The Assembly Rooms, the building have been in constant use by a variety of organisations. In August 1935 it was used for London's largest radio show. During the Second World War, in December 1940, the Rooms were leased

by Siemens on war contracts.

The company fitted combustion stoves, increased the power cables and constructed air-raid shelters at the rear. For a short time, some electrical wiring assembly work was carried out, but due to severe roof damage during the "blitz", production ceased. Also, a lot of damage was done to The Assembly Rooms when a land mine detonated in the park behind Charlton House, forcing Siemens to end their occupancy.

Viscountess Gough, daughter of Sir Spencer Maryon Wilson, 11th Baronet, presented St Luke's Church with The Assembly Rooms in 1946, for a peppercorn rent.

The Church used it mainly as its church hall. Various organisations, such as The Guides and The Scouts, St Luke's Players, The Ambassadors Youth Club all had their meetings in the Rooms, some of which were interrupted when restoration and redecoration took place. The floorboards in the main hall were removed and replaced with the present day parquet flooring. The stage was enlarged, extending over the space of the old kitchen. The kitchen was resited in the rear rooms. The toilet

facilities improved. The cost of the renovations exceeded £4,500, most of which came from grants from the South London Church Fund, the City Parochial Charities Fund and the War Damage Commission. It was eventually re-opened in October 1954 for the Festival of St Luke's by the Rector, The Revd Harold Gatehouse Bear.

All of the groups returned to using The Assembly Rooms. A daily luncheon club was opened for the elderly. They were used for wedding receptions, shows and pantomimes. However, St Luke's Church was struggling with the cost of the upkeep of the building and it was beginning to fall in disrepair. It needed a new roof, attention to the windows, among other things. Eventually, in 1971, the Church returned the building to Viscountess Gough, who, in turn, sold it to Greenwich Borough Council. However, the Council were unable to maintain the building and by 1972 it was boarded up ready for demolition and the land to be used as an extention to the existing car park.

(The building and land on the east side of the building had already been purchased by the Council in 1966, under a compulsory order, and cleared for use as a public car park).

In 1971, St Luke's Players, lead

by Gwen Zammit and Laurie Cole, part of St Luke's Church, had desperately fought, both with the church and latterly the Council, to keep the Rooms open for their productions. Eventually they joined

local residents and the Charlton Society with an aim to taking on the formidable task of restoring the building. Other groups joined them, including the organisers of the daily luncheon club, St Luke's Parochial Council and youth organisations. As a result, in 1973, SCARP was formed.

(Save Charlton Assembly Rooms Project) with the slogan (following Sir Spencer's intention: "To be Saved for the Benefit of the Whole Community") SCARP took over the daily running of the building at a peppercorn rent, with a legally binding agreement drawn up with Greenwich Council to hand back the building as and when it was completely restored. Various grants were obtained as a result of European Architectural Heritage Year followed by the Queen's Silver Jubilee.

Eventually a schedule of works was drawn up and an estimated sum of £80,000 would be needed to carry them out.

Most of the Phase One restoration work involved making the building fit for use by installing a disabled toilet and renewing the existing facilities. It was at this time that Mr Laurie Cole, the Founder Chairman, died suddenly, giving the Committee a great shock. Mrs Gwen Zammit, the new Chairman, would be responsible for the final works of the Project. As the leader of St Luke's Players, she had been with the Project since its outset.

Finally, in 1983, Mrs Gwen Zammit, acting on behalf of the

SCARP Committee, handed back The Assembly Rooms to the Greenwich Council. A party was held for all those who had participated in the Project and a plaque unveiled by Mrs Marjorie Cole, the wife of the Founder Chairman, in commemoration of "Save Charlton Assembly Rooms".

The Rooms had been completely restored at a cost of £83,000, apart from the brickwork on the west side of the building which needed attention. The bricks had been purchased by SCARP and stored in Charlton House. Greenwich Council had promised to see this work completed.

At this time, another agreement was drawn up with the London Borough of Greenwich to ensure that they continued to keep the building to the standard in which it was handed over by SCARP for a period of 28 years. The Assembly Rooms are used practically every day of the week by youth groups, organisations, weddings etc. St Luke's Players have returned to performing their pantomimes there.

Three years’ ago, The Assembly Rooms became part of the care administered by Royal Greenwich Heritage Trust as part of Charlton House. To this day, The Assembly Rooms cannot be used by anyone to make money for their own personal gain - it must be charitable.
