Step aboard Cutty Sark to see comedians Alan Carr and Rob Beckett perform brand new works-inprogress. BAFTA winner Alan Carr and multi-award winning comedian and presenter Rob Beckett will be performing some of their brand new material aboard the historic Cutty Sark in a series of late summer and

Chatty Man talk show host Carr performs stand-up regularly, on tour and on television. He had his own monthly show in a Manchester comedy club before touring nationwide. He has been featured in three Edinburgh shows, performed at the Apollo Theatre in London, which was televised for the BBC One series

Take a tour on the DLR An exclusive DLR Discovery train is running every weekend from 4 August to 9 September, writes Clara Gaspar...
The train will take ticket holders on a route that travels between Tower Gateway and Cutty Sark, on a special non-stopping service on a route not normally served by the DLR. Every train will include a
professional tour guide, and will travel along raised tracks, with a view of the Docklands area of east London and its cultural heritage. Visitors will pass sights including the skyline of Canary Wharf, the historic Billingsgate Fish Market, Limehouse basin and its remarkable network of navigable canals, the iconic Cutty Sark tea clipper, as well
as less familiar, but equally impressive sights, such as Crossrail Place. DLR discovery also includes a 30 minute guided walking tour after guests arrive in Greenwich, as a chance to learn more about the World Heritage Site, passing by the Royal Naval College and National Maritime Museum. Trish Ashton, General Manager of the DLR, said: “I hope people
from across the city, as well as those visiting London, take the chance to ride the special, non-stopping train between two world-famous London landmarks, and gain insight into a historically fascinating area of east London.” The DLR first opened its doors to travellers in 1987 and helped begin regeneration in the Docklands, playing an integral
role in the transformation and revival of the area, at the same time supporting the creation of thousands of jobs and homes. Tickets for the exclusive DLR Discovery train are £8 for adults and £4 for children and include a return journey on the DLR. These can be purchased via tfl. www.gov.uk/dlr-discovery

Theatre Selladoor’s production of Madagascar the Musical brings DreamWorks Animations’ 2005 film Madagascar to the stage. Featuring the film’s plot and much-loved songs, plus rapping, singing and hip hop-bopping animals, it’s a feel-good production for all the family and a chance for fans of the animated movie to see their favourite characters come to life on stage, writes Holly O’Mahony...
Madagascar follows the story of Marty the zebra who, having just celebrated his 10th birthday at Central Park Zoo in New York, begins to wonder what life might be like in the world beyond. Following a team of penguins, who are also looking to escape, Marty leaves the zoo in the dead of night, but is soon pursued by best friend Alex the lion, Gloria the hippopotamus and Melman the giraffe who suffers from health anxiety. The troupe get as far as Grand Central station before word of their escape spreads and trouble in the form of the police catches up with them. The next thing they know, they’ve been shipped to Madagascar… or have they? X-Factor’s 2016 winner Matt Terry is excellent in the role of Alex the Lion (although you do wonder if prancing about in an unflattering lion bodysuit is what he had in mind for his career after winning Britain’s biggest televised singing contest). Although the stage adaptation features songs from Madagascar the film, the production also has its own original music and lyrics by George Noriega and Joel Someillan, and includes numbers that showcase Terry’s diverse range and goosebump-inducing talent. Fans of X-Factor could see Madagascar the Musical purely to hear Terry sing. Recent Rose Bruford graduate Timmika Ramsay’s voice is also notably both sweet and powerful,
Madagascar the Musical has the X Factor
and Antoine Murray-Straughan is lovable in the titular role of Marty. Meanwhile director Kirk Jameson’s army of mastermind penguins will have both adults and children smiling in delight as their hardheaded comments jar against their adorable appearances (particularly while kitted out in winter hats and scarfs). Puppet designer Max Humphries’ lemurs, with their sleepy, doe-like eyes, will also make you want to reach out and
cuddle them. Tom Rogers’ set design is stunning, both in the form of the New York skyline and Madagascar. It’s bettered still when combined with Howard Hudson’s lighting, which captures dawn and dusk in the animal kingdoms exquisitely. At just two hours long, including an interval, and with a lighthearted plot padded out with crowd-pleasing songs, Madagascar The Musical should
do a good job of keeping even the wriggliest of bottoms seated. Meanwhile the spattering of jokes aimed at adults in the auditorium (kudos to Kevin Del Aguila for incorporating these into the book) will keep grown up minds focused too – although probably not enough to see the musical without a young one by your side. With a moral of friendship and looking out for those you care about at its core, Madagascar is an entertaining children’s musical
with a message well worth learning. Madagascar the Musical is on at the Churchill Theatre, High Street, Bromley, BR1 1HA. September 25-29, times vary. Admission: £23-£35/concessions available for groups and under 18s. www.churchilltheatre.co.uk/ Online/tickets-madagascarbromley-2018
Blood Brothers should be on the bucket list Considered one of the greatest musicals ever written, Blood Brothers, by award-winning playwright Willy Russell, has triumphed across the globe. Scooping up no fewer than four awards for best musical in London and seven Tony Award nominations on Broadway, Blood Brothers should be on everyone’s bucket list, writes Michael Holland... This epic tale of Liverpool life started as a play, performed at a Liverpool comprehensive school in 1981 before opening at the Liverpool Playhouse in 1983, completing sell out seasons in the US, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Japan. Blood Brothers also ran in London’s West End for 24 years, exceeding 10,000 performances - One of only three musicals ever to
8 August 29 2018
achieve that milestone. It is a captivating and moving story of twin boys separated at birth, only to be reunited by a twist of fate and a mother’s haunting secret. When Mrs Johnstone, a young mother, is deserted by her husband and left to her own devices to provide for seven hungry children she takes a job as a housekeeper in order to make ends meet. It is not long before her brittle world crashes around her when she discovers herself to be pregnant yet again – this time with twins! In a moment of weakness and desperation, she enters a secret pact with her employer which leads inexorably to the show’s shattering climax. Russell is undeniably one of this country’s leading contemporary dramatists. His countless credits include Educating Rita and Shirley Valentine. Educating Rita,
originally commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company, enjoyed a two year run in the West End and was made into a movie starring Michael Caine and Julie Walters. Shirley Valentine also made the move from stage to screen in an enormously popular film starring Pauline Collins and Tom Conti. A sensational cast, incredible show stopping music, remarkable staging and five star performances make Blood Brothers an enthralling night of entertainment. Blood Brothers is on at Churchill Theatre, High Street, Bromley, BR1 1HA from Tue 4 – Sat 8 September. Times: 7.30 pm, 2.30pm matinees. Admission: £25 - £39. Letting your true colour shine through is the key to success Do you know your ‘wow’ colours? Style and colour consultant Emilie West can show you how to look your best, in one session. Being colour confident and knowing your personal style is the key to success, according to the former Investment Banker, writes Lautra Burgoine...
The Greenwich local now works as a brand consultant, executive coach, and nutritional therapist, and has just opened her own franchise as a consultant with House of Colour for Greenwich and Canary Wharf. Emilie first had her colours analysed as a 21-year-old. “It was a previous generation thing. Mums had it done in the ‘80s and people associate it with that but it’s about so much more than the colours you wear,” she told the Weekender. “Our reptilian brain is trained to read people,” she continued. “We make instant decisions. If you’re wearing the wrong colour, the brain just thinks: something is wrong with this picture.” Emilie first became interested in the psychology of colour after she lost her first job just two months in. A career advisor told her she looked very young for her age, and being a female in a male dominated industry would present challenges. The career advisor suggested Emilie get her colours done. “I had no idea what I was doing. The stylist put me

in vibrant colours and make-up. At the time the colour palette people wore was nude lips and neutral coloured clothes. I got the first job I interviewed for, back in investment banking, and by wearing the recommended colours I quickly gained a better profile than my peers,” she said. “I was getting promoted and I believe it’s because I was dressing in a way that came across confidently. When I looked in the mirror I felt confident.” It’s important to manage your personal brand in the workplace, Emilie said. “If you wear different colours it makes people look at you again, and re-listen to what you’re saying and connect with you. It’s important to stay visible.” Once people start dressing in their right colours, they’ll notice instant changes like people stopping on the street and asking them for directions. “We scan people immediately and look for who we think we can trust. This all happens subconsciously. People scan if you look congruent and your style of dress matches your personality,” Emilie said. The stylist also works with businesses, helping them build their brands. “We all have animal instincts. We make a lot of decisions emotionally and then use logic to back it up,” she said. “If you’re at a job interview, people have a few seconds looking at you before you speak, and they’re making judgments.
As animals we’re meant to decide at 50 paces if an animal is going to attack us.” “However much we shouldn’t judge people by the way they look, we do,” Emilie said. “The way you’re dressed does make an impact.” The colourists can’t determine someone’s colours “until they’re in the chair.” “People come in, we explain the science behind it, you sit in front of the mirror, in natural light, and we hold up different swatches of colour and look at what it does to your skin tone. Do they hide wrinkles? How defined does your jaw look? You can add or remove pounds and years,” she said. There are warm colour tones (more yellow based) or cool (blue tone) based on the colour of your fat cells and how your blood looks through cells. “Once we’ve determined that, we get down to what season you are. Some people look better in bright vibrant colour, others in more muted tones. Once we’ve found someone’s season, all the colours they can wear and can’t, our ladies put make-up on, which can change your whole face shape. We go back into your season to establish these.” People are given 36 colours that work for them, as well as their top “wow” colours. “Some people
will have worked out the odd two or three colours that work for them,” Emilie said. “We show them the full variety and range.” “If you open your wardrobe and all the clothes suit you and make you look terrific, it’s like a sign saying you look fabulous,” Emilie added. The colourist is expanding from Greenwich to also target the Canary Wharf crowd. “They
dress really well there, but Canary Wharf has fallen into a dressing rut. They need some variety,” she said. “If you’re in a place where everyone is in black, you feel a bit depressed.” The one-to-one sessions are 1.5 hours and the results last for the rest of your life. “It’s about presenting your best self. Show people who you are,” Emilie said. “My job is helping people reach their goals, and transform themselves to meet their full potential.” Emilie is now offering consultations from 40 Bank Street, 1 Canada Square, Canary Wharf, E14 5AB, as well as from her Greenwich Studio, 34 Devonshire Drive, SE10 8JZ. Greenwich Dance moves to historic Charlton House Greenwich Dance has moved to a new home in Charlton House, writes Brooke Manning...
The relocation from its Woolwich base takes place after the Royal Greenwich Heritage Trust offered Greenwich Dance the Sir Adam Newton’s bedroom as their office space. The Jacobean country house was built by the crown in the early 1600s. The new location will give Greenwich Dance access to The Old Library, The Charlton Assembly Rooms, the gardens, as well as other spaces for classes, projects and performances.
laura@weekender.co.uk /
In September, the organisation will relaunch its morning classes for professional dancers and bring back its over 60s performance company as well. “We are thrilled to have a new home at Charlton House,” Melanie Precious, the CEO of Greenwich Dance, said. “Charlton House is wellpositioned – we feel as is if forgotten areas of the borough are now within easy reach.” The Charlton House location means that Greenwich Dance will be able to have their classes and performances sited across the borough.
