The National Maritime Museum is hosting a lecture which will unwrap the history of the UK’s most popular takeaway.

Panikos Panayi, Professor of European History at De Montfort University, will breakdown the history of this quintessential British dish. An outdoor

swimming pool awash with history

T

he UK isn’t known for its outdoor swimming opportunities. Many of our beaches are written off for their pebbles or rough tides, while outdoor pools and dedicated wild swimming locations are relatively scarce.

Then there’s our unpredictable weather, which often sees off plans to to go for a quick dip anywhere other than an indoor, heated pool.

But while outdoor swimming is far less popular in the UK than other parts of Europe and further afield, the country’s remaining lidos are steeped in history.

The borough of Greenwich is home to a tucked-away treasure in the form of Charlton Lido.

Many outdoor pools, including Charlton’s, underwent a period of closure for several years, before the funds could be raised to see a refurbishment through. Charlton Lido was one of the lucky ones, reopening fully for public use in 2013, following a £2m refurb. The lido now belongs to the Better Leisure franchise, and offers a 50m heated outdoor pool and fitness classes all year round.

The 1930s were the golden age for lidos in the UK. A total of 169 were

built over the course of the decade, funded by local councils with a vision of providing more recreational swimming spaces. Charlton Lido was originally opened on 6 May 1939 – right at the end of the ‘lido boom’ – by Councillor H Icough, who was the Mayor of Greenwich at the time. Roughly 800 people gathered for the ceremony, which included trumpet fanfare from the London Fire Brigade Band and a diving display

In recent history, Charlton Lido has had its moments in the spotlight, featuring in the music video of Blazin’ Squad’s 2003 song ‘We Just Be Dreamin’ and in an episode of ITV show The Bill in 2004. But arguably, the lido’s more charming stories come from its regular swimmers – one of whom is Jonathan Pike, who has been swimming at the lido since 2005.

“Charlton Lido was a great discovery,” says Jonathan. “The extra length of the pool, 50 yards then, the absence of a strong smell of chlorine, and the sheer pleasure of swimming in fresh air and cool water was all new to me.”

That autumn, when the lido closed its doors to the public for winter, Jonathan joined those who swam all year round, maintaining the pool

and surrounding area in return.

Chores included topping up the water level, gardening, weeding and clearing any fallen leaves.

By the time Jonathan joined the regulars, the group had already seen off plans to turn the lido into a skate park. Developments were eventually abandoned, but the lido was left in a derelict state, so the regulars at the time took it upon themselves to clear the rubbish, repair the pool lining and hand-paint the lane lines again.

For Jonathan and many of the other year-round swimmers, cold water swimming – even without a wetsuit – is addictive. “I could happily manage 400 yards in water at 42F (5.5C) back when I started.

But as the temperature dropped to the point that ice formed, the amount of swimming time diminished, in my case to about one-and-a-half minutes.” Jonathan recalls wearing old washing up gloves to ease the pain of the cold water on his hands, but insists that a day without a cold dip felt wrong.

Jonathan and the other regular swimmers noticed that they suffered less frequently with colds than they had done before swimming outdoors. “There was some debate about whether this

was down to the cold water or the fresh air... I am of the opinion that it is in part due to the extra doses of vitamin D gained from brief but regular skin exposure to sunlight, and the benefits that this provides to the immune system,” he says.

Curious to test the appeal, I went for a swim at Charlton Lido (admittedly in the balmy month of June). Having swum in both Tooting Bec and Brockwell Lido in the past, I felt I had a couple of decent comparison points. On my visit, straight after work on a cloudy Wednesday afternoon, the pool was relatively quiet – certainly less busy than I had ever seen Brockwell Lido – and I had a lane all to myself. Had I struck it lucky? Yes, according to a lifeguard, who told me that on a hot weekend, you can’t even see the pool floor for all the people in it – not to mention those sunbathing round its sides. The water was gloriously warm (at around 25C it felt like a bath compared to chilly Tooting Bec Lido) and the friendly snippets of conversation I overheard by the poolside and in the locker room signaled to the pool’s close-knit community. The changing rooms are simple but the showers warm and powerful, and there are poolside changing

cubicles, too.

The popularity of outdoor swimming in the UK could be making a comeback. The lido at London Fields reopened in 2006 having been closed for nearly 20 years, and plans are well underway to open a new wild swimming lake in Lewisham’s Beckenham Place Park. Mayor of London Sadiq Khan put £440,000 towards the plan, with the works set to be complete by spring 2019. Meanwhile the community in Peckham is campaigning to get Peckham Rye Lido reopened.

“The pleasure of swimming during rain or snow, or under an icy blue sky when the steam rising from the water makes it impossible to see the other end of the lane, is a real luxury,” says Jonathan. “Long may it continue.”

A play filled with Dolly Parton

M

ountview Academy of Theatre Arts will be presenting its production of 9 to 5: The Musical at Greenwich Theatre this week. The popular musical based on the 1980 movie of the same name features many of Dolly Parton’s smash-hit songs. The production will be performed by final year students at Mountview, where Dame Judi Dench is currently president, and directed by professional director Charlotte Westenra. The Greenwich Weekender caught up with Charlotte to find out more about the production.

“There’s a reason why 9 to 5: The Musical resonates today in a post #metoo world,” says Charlotte.

“The musical examines inequality in the workplace and how women can take control of their destiny.

smashed and for parity for women in pay, job opportunities and respect,” Charlotte says, referring to the point in the story where one character is fired for asking why the women in the office are paid less than the men. “It’s difficult not to think about the recent pay scandals that have engulfed British industries.”

Beyond the socio-political context, Charlotte points out the play is also an excellent one for students to showcase their talent. “We have some extraordinary women in the company who belt out some great Dolly Parton numbers,” she says. “It also has moments where the men can shine. Although the play’s main antagonist is the lecherous male boss, there are lots of positive male characters in the play, who show how the respectful, supportive men have also been overlooked in the workplace.”

Dolly Parton songs, it’s been great fun for the team to work on. “The creative process has been joyful through and through. There has never been a sense that one part is more important than the other,” she says, adding that the play embodies an ideal blend: it’s a story that makes audiences think whilst giving them a good night out.

“More than anything though, the play is great fun.”

Charlotte has been working with Mountview for the past five years, whilst developing her own musicals outside of this. “Working with Mountview musical theatre actors means I get to know them as they start off in the industry,” she says.

“The excitement of working with the next Laura Pitt-Pulford or Giles Terera makes Mountview a really appealing place to work.” So, are there any rising stars among the 9 to 5: The Musical cast? “These students are a real triple threat.

They can dance, sing and act,”

says Charlotte, diplomatically.

As lovable as her music is, in singing Dolly’s songs all day over a several week period, the company are running a risk of growing sick of them. But this hasn’t been the case for Charlotte, thankfully.

“Having worked on 9 to 5 I love her even more. Her songs talk of strength, of the sisterhood, of being allowed to dream. She has an open heart and a great spirit that I warm to.” But does she have a favourite song? “The song ‘Get Out and Stay Out’ recently had us all cheering. It’s a great 11 o’clock number where Judy finally finds the voice and strength to stand up to her abusive husband.”

If you’re reading this and feeling half tempted to go, this will probably be your only chance to see this particular production, says Charlotte, adding that she’d tour it round the country if she could. After

playing it at Greenwich Theatre, though, the students will return to Mountview to graduate and start their professional careers. “The students will have learnt so much from working with such a senior team,” she says. “I hope they feel that they’ve been given a professional experience and that they’ll leave ready to join any musical they get offered.”

Meanwhile Charlotte has a goal in mind for her audience, too. “I want them coming out of Greenwich Theatre dancing and cheering on the sisterhood!”

Summer Sunday extravaganza at Mycenae House & Gardens

n Sunday 1 July, Mycenae House & Gardens in Blackheath is hosting its fifth annual Summer Sunday Extravaganza event.

Part of Greenwich PARKSfest – a programme of open air and cultural entertainment that takes place in open spaces across the borough – the festival is organised by Friends Groups and is free to attend.

So, what can guests expect from Mycenae House & Gardens this year? “We have lots of great shows, activities, demonstrations and havea-go sessions,” says Anna Mars, the venue’s sales and marketing manager.

Several bands of varying genres will take to the stage over the course of the afternoon. Announced acts include Sonic Blue, The Gillies, Bruise, Leon Tilbrook, Blackheath Centre for Singing and the local NHS Choir. The Greenwich Morris Men will also be make an appearance, showing off their morris dancing moves.

Look out for Libby Rose, who is bringing along her sewing skills on her iconic pink bus. Meanwhile Emergency Exit Arts and A Line Art will be running exciting ‘Ready

There will also be lots of workshops to keep the little ones entertained.

The Summer Sunday Extravaganza events are a chance for members of the local community to come together to enjoy an afternoon of performances and activities, says Anna. “Seeing the smiles on the faces of guests at each event is amazing and we receive such wonderful feedback following each festival. We hope to provide guests with another fun-filled afternoon.”

Historical embroideries created by local women The Greenwich Heritage Centre in Royal Arsenal, Woolwich, will be displaying The Millennium Embroideries: eight embroidered panels depicting local history from 1900 to 2000. The embroideries were created by local women and illustrate the history of the borough from the time of the Celts and Romans onwards. The embroideries are a visual feast – offering a window onto the Anglo Saxons, Vikings, Tudors and Victorians amongst other eras.

community millennium project, celebrating 2000 years of history in the borough of Greenwich. Local women came together each Friday to research and plan what would eventually take the form of the incredibly detailed, embroidered panels.

Until recently, the works have rarely been seen due to their delicacy. Seven of the completed panels, depicting the history of the borough, from the Romans to the Victorians, were temporarily displayed at Woolwich Town Hall in 2000. The public were then invited to contribute ideas for the final panel representing the 20th century.

Following the move to the new

Greenwich Heritage Centre, all eight panels were temporarily displayed together for the first time in 2004.

On both occasions, the works were only able to be shown for short periods before being returned to the centre’s climate-controlled storage space, for protection.

Since then, an organisation known as the Friends of Greenwich Millennium Embroideries (FoGME) was set up by the embroiderers to raise funds to purchase conservation display cases for the embroideries, to enable them to be displayed for longer periods of time. The organisation was backed by Greenwich Council and the University of Greenwich

and Blackheath Art Society, and received a generous personal contribution from Sir Antony Jay, which together raised the funds for display cases for all eight panels as of 2009.

“The reaction to the embroideries has been really positive from all groups of people,” says Mary Ross, Collections Manager at the Greenwich Heritage Centre. “They are popular with school groups and families as well as adults of all ages.

There is so much to see in each one that visitors spot new things each time they see them.” The current display is a chance to see the full works and admire a detailed illustration of the borough’s history,

created by the local community.

he Royal Greenwich Get Together – formerly Armed Forces Day – is taking place on Saturday 30 June in the Royal Arsenal in Woolwich.

The free annual event is an opportunity for residents from across the borough to celebrate the community and enjoy a variety of entertainment, which this year includes a family roller disco, a performance from the AirCraft Circus Academy and DJ sets.

Who’s playing?

Fans of soul and jazz won’t be disappointed – UK-based afro-soul guitarist Eben Oke will be performing with his sixpiece band Yoruba Soul Jazz.

Eben’s music is described as infectious, afro-beat grooves; combining traditional Yoruba songs, highlife, funk and sweet vocals. Meanwhile pop lovers should check out tribute band A Touch of Little Mix to hear all their favourite Little Mix songs. If classical is more to your taste, be sure to catch Greenwich Music Hub perform.

And on the decks, Jazzie B (Soul II Soul) and Bossa Beats will be performing DJ sets.

What other activities are taking place?

The family-focused line-up has a decent balance of activities to get stuck in to and stunning visual spectacles to stand back and watch. In the former category is the family roller disco, for those brave enough to don some wheels and whizz around to chart bangers as well as some classics. Whilst if skateboarding is more your thing, the Charlton School of Skate will also be offering skateboarding lessons.

Art workshops and craft stalls might be more the ticket for beady-eyed creatives, and Bobbin’ Bunnies will be offering their popular music classes for tots under five.

Meanwhile, if all this sounds a bit too active, both the carnival parade and AirCraft Circus will be delighting audiences, while Bus Kings Theatre and Simply Smiley Theatre will be performing, too.

Armed Forces Day activities As is tradition, there will be an Armed Forces Day area at the event featuring vintage and military vehicles, and a Harrier Flight Simulator, offering guests the chance to experience life up high in the pilot’s seat. Representatives of army and navy cadets, the Royal Artillery, the Grenadier Guards and the King’s Troop will all be present. The Armed Forces Day area is also where the Veterans’ presentations with the Mayor will take place.

Food and drink A whole host of vendors will be on-hand to keep guests wellfuelled throughout the event.

The Greenwich Co-operative Development Agency (GCDA) will be serving up a feast made entirely of surplus food. It’s a chance to enjoy a free lunch and find out more about the Greenwich-based organisation.

Armed Forces Day takes place on the last Saturday of June each year, which falls on the 30th in 2018. Celebrations will begin on Monday 25th, when the Armed Forces Day flag will be raised on buildings and famous landmarks around the country.

The British Oak

A community pub with a farm-like garden

I

f you’re looking for a familyfriendly spot to set up camp for the afternoon this summer, but don’t fancy the faff of preparing a picnic with several different sandwich fillings to suit everyone’s tastes, or searching in the attic for the picnic rug, The British Oak’s pub garden might just be the answer.

The Victorian pub sits out of the limelight on Old Dover Road, between Charlton and Blackheath. It’s family run, since being taken over by landlords Peter and Juliet 11 years ago. The pub could be easily overlooked for the fact its oh-so-close to quaint Blackheath village. But the back garden with its wood chip ground and brood of chickens lend the pub a farmlike feel.

“We’re running a competition on our Facebook page to name the chickens,” owner Peter tells me. This batch are new, but the pub has been home to egg-laying squarkers for four years now.

Currently, the front-running names for the birds are either adorable, traditional ones like Colin and Mildred, or they’ll be named after Scooby-Doo characters.

Before my visit, I’d heard that The British Oak was a friendly pub with a real community, and this immediately becomes obvious when I sit down with Peter to hear about its story.

“The pub was in disrepair when we took it over,” he explains.

“We refurbed the bar and tried to change the dynamic without changing it too much, because that would scare off the locals. So we’ve tried to slowly ease in the changes.”

A sense of community is clearly at the heart of The British Oak. The pub’s website details its events which include a monthly quiz, a Tuesday folk night, screenings of various sport matches (including, of course, the 2018 World Cup) and, interestingly, a ‘question time’ event, described as a ‘friendly and coordinated chat about current topics over a pint’. It doesn’t get more community than that.

Previously the garden consisted of pebbles and overgrown flower beds, but Peter and Juliet brought in the wood chips and chickens to make it child-friendly. Next year they’re hoping to continue the development by adding a water feature. “We wanted to encourage children to come in, but if they’re not occupied they become bored

and mischievous,” laughs Peter.

He’d heard from a friend and fellow pub runner that chickens were a good distraction. “Now we get parents bringing their children in just to see the chickens,” he says.

Although the pub is wet-led, offering reasonably priced wines and beers, it also has a food offering of Pieminister pies. “We were the first pub from the Ei group to offer Pieminister,” Peter proudly tells me. In case you haven’t heard of it, Pieminister started out as a Bristol-based pie shop, but quickly became popular enough for the owners to expand to Borough Market and several other places around the country. “We wanted to offer something a bit premium that would also encourage people to look at the craft beer selection,” explains Peter. (The pub has a rotating craft beer tap as well as stocking the more classic lager and ale brands.)

Pieminister pies are known for their fun and quirky names like the ‘Heidi’ pie (goats’ cheese, sweet potato, spinach and onion); ‘Chicken of Aragon’ (chicken, smoked bacon and tarragon); and the ‘Moo’ pie (beef steak and ale).

On my visit I had the ‘Free Ranger’, a chicken and ham pie with leek and thyme. I had this with both

sides available – mashed potato and Pieminister’s signature mushy peas with mint – and turned this into the full ‘Mothership’ offer, with cheddar cheese and crispy shallots on the side – all for £11.50.

It was, as always with Pieminister, filling and completely satisfying, although I ate it feeling more than a little bit guilty for eating chicken having just admired some in the pub garden.

It’s worth noting that vegans and those who are gluten-free are not forgotten here; the ‘Kevin’ pie consists of mushroom, tomato, red wine, baby onions and thyme, and is made with gluten-free pastry. I washed my pie down with an Adnams Mosaic Pale Ale – a favourite of mine – which the pub always has on tap.

The British Oak’s recent awards speak for the pub’s quality. The pub won the 2017/18 cellar awards and its currently a finalist in the EI

pub excellence awards – a national competition open to all of the brand’s 500 pubs. Fundamentally, though, The British Oak is a humble pub for locals. It’s not looking to impress the anonymous gaze of London – as Peter himself says, they don’t have that kind of footfall – it’s a community pub doing what it does well.
