IN MEMORY Eltham Crematorium is holding a remembrance service to commemorate those whose funerals have taken place in the year and beyond. The service is held in the North Chapel at 2pm and lasts for about 45 minutes. At 1.30pm, there will be a short organ recital. Visitors are invited to make requests for music that is especially meaningful to them. The service is conducted by local ministers and officiants and they cater for all faiths and beliefs. GREENWICH BOOK FESTIVAL By Laura Burgoine
A
series of authors are making a splash at Greenwich Book Festival, riding the crest of the ‘water-biography’ wave. At an event at Charlton Lido, debut novelist Libby Page is talking about her book the Lido. Tipped as the feel-good debut of the year, it tells the fictional story of 26 year-old local journalist Kate who pairs up with 86 year-old widow Rosemary to save the Brockwell Lido from closure.
Libby talks to the Weekender about diving into the literary world. “I thought of writing the Lido as a historical book but decided it’s a modern story about community spaces being threatened with closure,” she said. “Lidos are somewhere where you see people of all ages. There aren’t that many places that an 86 year old and a 26 year old would both be.” The inspiration for the setting came from real life –Libby is an avid outdoor swimmer at her local London Fields and Parliament Hill Lidos. “I wasn’t much of a swimmer at all but a colleague of mine used to swim every morning and swore by it so I started at an indoor pool with her and gradually built up my confidence,” Libby said. “My older sister is a really good swimmer and she gave me lessons and encouraged me to go outdoors and that’s where I came to discover the amazing Lidos in London.” “You feel more connected to nature. It’s amazing to see the transformation of the seasonsfrom people who go there in summer, and then some very dedicated people who are there all year round.” While studying at university, Libby lived in Brixton and was struck by the sense of community. “I grew up in a small village in Dorset and was used to saying hello to people on the street so London was quite a shock to the system when I moved here,” she said. “But in Brixton the community is there. You just have to look for it more. That’s why I chose to set the story there.” The novel also explores the link between swimming and mental health. “I think it’s good that people are talking more honestly about people in their 20s and about how it can be a lonely, overwhelming time,” Libby said. “I’m just encouraging people to have more honest conversations with their friends. There’s recent statistics the government has released about loneliness being a huge issue for young people.” Beginning her career as a journalist, Libby switched to a job in marketing and wrote the Lido in 2015 alongside her fulltime job. “There was a lot of getting up early to write, taking my laptop into work to write on my lunchbreak,” she said. “The hardest process was a year of sending the manuscript out to different people. I was very close to giving up,” she continued. “Then I heard about Caskie Mushens: a new agency who were looking to fill their roster with new authors and I heard back

from Robert Caskie –who’s my agent now- in half an hour saying he loved the sound of my book. Things happened really quickly then, which is the importance of finding the right agent because he sold it so well. This was January/ February and he wanted to sell it at the London Book Fair in March. I booked a week's holiday to do the edits, and heard back within a couple of hours.” The book was sold, and two days later Libby quit her job and became a full-time author. She’s currently working on the first draft for her second book as part of her twobook deal. At the panel in Greenwich,
Libby is joining writers Alexandra Heminsley, Jenny Landreth, and Joe Minihane to talk “all things swimming.” “As a keen swimmer myself, I’ve read all the other authors’ books. They’re all non-fiction, water biographies,” she said. “I’ll get there early on the day and go for a swim beforehand.” Libby is at the Greenwich Book Festival at Charlton Lido, Hornfair Park, Shooters Hill Road, SE18 4LX, on Thursday 14 June at 7pm-8:15pm. ippa Beecheno worked as a Community Development Manager for various charities. With a growing family to look after, she began writing fiction whenever the opportunity arose. format which reflects the nature of schizophrenia which means, ‘scattered mind’. The plot is chronological, but interspersed within it, are episodes set in hospital in the 1940s and 1950s. Schizophrenia is an illness that is not fully understood. Symptoms are varied. It seems terrifyingly easy to misdiagnose. Historical accounts reveal people who might now be diagnosed as autistic or depressed were subjected to all sorts of aggressive treatments after their doctors diagnosed them with schizophrenia. The media portrayal of schizophrenia that many will have absorbed is one of violence and aggression, of isolated, terrified, and terrifying individuals. These instances are, in fact, extremely scarce. Most people with schizophrenia find it hard to distinguish real from unreal, some hear voices, some experience hallucinations, most withdraw from social interaction or norms in some way or other, most suffer anxiety or paranoia, hardly any are violent towards others. I researched the illness and the experimental treatments that were meted out in the 1940s-50s, but what was important to me was not to
lose sight of the person at the centre of it. Someone utterly unique who fought desperately to get on with life, do good, help others, while all along her insecurities ate away at her confidence and undermined her enormous potential. We are all vulnerable when it comes to our mental health. We may be forced to rely on others to make decisions about our lives. Transparency, openness, and oversight are essential, none of which were present mid-twentieth century when patients were certified and treated with little more than a signature from the family. My great-aunt’s hospital looked like a grand stately home, but she couldn’t leave it without a doctor’s permission. There was a war on. There was no hope of a stable, peaceful environment within which to recover. Those she trusted left to
fight, and her nightmares became a living reality she couldn’t block out. When I outline my novel to friends, I don’t want to start with, ‘My great-aunt was diagnosed with schizophrenia just before war broke out.’ This sounds like the most dramatic element of the novel and the most important factor in my plot but, in fact, it is just one part of what makes her heroic. It tells the story of Jane Deering, a schizophrenia sufferer around the time of the Second World War. Pippa tells us the fascinating background that prompted this story and how she came to put pen to paper. I inherited a story based on loss: a black hole of a loss, a loss from within a closely knit extended family – a family that didn’t know about its loss until decades later. My great-aunt was diagnosed with schizophrenia just before the Second World War, her dynamism
and potential curtailed by illness, circumstance, and the trauma of treatment. My grandparents passed on boxes of highly emotional letters written to and from my great-aunt and a personal account of her life written by my grandfather. I was given the privilege of reviving the past, but setting a fictional plot around my great-aunt’s complex and tragic life was challenging. When my grandfather wrote about his sister, he wanted us to understand her legacy. More than that, he wanted someone to breathe life into it. His account was full of questions: how and why did this happen, was his sister’s illness inevitable? I wanted to explore these questions, put them to my readers. In choosing episodes from my great-aunt’s life to include in the plot, I found myself focusing on fractures and shocks. If my great-aunt was genetically prone to schizophrenia, she was living at a time when there were few safety nets. The insecurities she faced during her life, including the build up to World War Two, made her increasingly vulnerable. My narrative structure is intentionally fragmented – a

Roadshow at Eltham Palace
D
ust off your antiques and try out your luck at Eltham Palace this weekend; BBC’s Antiques Roadshow is coming to town.
The BBC One programme is filming for its 41st series at the English Heritage art deco property in Greenwich on Sunday 10 June. Fiona Bruce and the team of Antiques Roadshow experts are welcoming visitors to the event. Locals are being encouraged to wheel out their family heirlooms, raid their attics and dig out their car boot bargains to bring along for free advice and valuations. A moated medieval palace, Eltham Palace was once the childhood home of Henry VIII. The property was transformed into a showpiece of Art Deco design and cutting-edge technology back in the 1930s by its glamorous millionaire owners Stephen and Virginia Courtauld. The property is now in the care of English Heritage and also boasts 19 acres of beautiful gardens, which received a gold award at the London in Bloom Awards 2017. Robert Murphy, series producer of Antiques Roadshow said “It’s a stunning backdrop for a Sunday show and we’d love to see cherished objects and hear personal stories from the people of south-east London and beyond.” “It’s a great free, family day out and you can see how we make one of BBC One’s most popular programmes. Choral Society performs The Armed Man

ltham Choral Society is performing The Armed Man, a mass for peace by Karl Jenkins.
The concert is being conducted by musical director Max Barley and will include a full orchestra. The concert will also feature other music for remembrance in recognition of the centenary of the end of the First World War.

Plumstead Make Merry festival returns for another year of fun T
he longest running independent festival in the Royal Borough of Greenwich makes a return to Plumstead Common. Go along and Make Merry from midday to 6pm on Saturday 9 June. There's plenty of local talent

taking part on the Bandstand of musicians and dancers, and in the Acoustic Cafe there will be musicians, poets and a whole host of comedians. Drop into the Workshop Tent for free activities for all ages. Festival-goers can learn djembe drumming, arts and crafts, maths tricks, playing the ukulele, as well
as storytelling with dance and a variety of instruments. Join Plumstead Chamber Choir for folk singing. Around the site the free activities and performances will include African acrobatics and circus skills from Emmanuel the Magnificent and his acrobats. The Greenwich Morris Men make a welcome
return to perform their traditional dancing and also give people the opportunity to take part. There will be free giant games and inflatables and a soft play area for the under 7s. The younger members of the family can also take part in a variety of different activities in the Under 1 Roof area from Einstein's
Entertainers, to diddi dance. For the athletically inclined, Football Revolution has the chance to beat the keeper and to play mini-matches, and Greenwich Rugby Football Club will have lots of kids rugby games all day: tag rugby, animal walks, beat the coach, the 5-ball challenge and more.

The festival is run entirely by volunteers with over 7,000 people attending last year’s Plumstead Make Merry. The first Plumstead Make Merry took place in June 1975 and was made up of various local people and organisations who volunteered their time as organisers, stall-holders and
performers. Since the first festival the Plumstead Make Merry has grown in size, amenities and diversity. It has been held every year, with one exception, in 2011 when due to a lack of funding from the Royal Borough of Greenwich as a result of central government cuts, the festival was replaced with a scaled-down event called

From Greenwich to Greek Island
L
ocal actor Eamonn Cox has just landed a part in the classic West End musical Mamma Mia. But this is no overnight success. At age 14 Eamonn realised he wanted to go into musical theatre. “I'd already been dancing for seven years and realised I wanted to continue dancing for as long as I could,” he told the Weekender.
Eamonn was born in Greenwich Hospital and still lives locally now. He told the Weekender how his mum has been a “rock my whole life… She has supported me in anything and everything I've wanted to do without question and without her I have no idea what I'd be doing with my life.”

It’s good that Eamonn’s Mamma was so supportive because with her hard work and his dedication he got his first big job in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers at Regents Park Open Air Theatre. “It was certainly a great first job and at a reputable theatre too,” he remembered. Since then Eamonn has been involved with some other well-known musicals but he claims that it was touring with the Wedding Singer that was his career highlight so far, as he went on for the lead role of Robbie Hart. He vividly recalls the memory. “It's a huge part to play and I loved getting the chance to lead a company from the front. And to top it off my sister took a day off work and came all the way to Liverpool to surprise me and
watch me play the part!” But now it’s all about preparing for Mamma Mia! “Rehearsals are going really well,” the young singer and dancer said. “We've pretty much learnt the whole show now and it's more or less just a case of piecing it all together! The cast are all amazing and that means rehearsals are always fun and lively.” This was a topic Eamonn could really get his teeth into: “Mamma Mia! is a musical theatre classic and I've always wanted to work in the West End,” he says excitedly. “Getting paid to sing and dance to ABBA seems like a dream job to anyone, right?” Dead right, I agreed and asked about his character in it. “I'm playing the
part of Eddie, who is one of Sky's best friends. He's a cheeky guy who is always trying to make a joke, usually unsuccessfully! He does as little work as he can get away with and is usually found getting into trouble with Pepper and Sky.” With at least a year in this show, Eamonn hasn’t really thought about what is next. “Probably more auditions and whatever pops
up… But for now I'm just excited to get started really!” And everyone at the Weekender is excited for Eamonn too. Mamma Mia! is at Novello Theatre, Aldwych, WC2B 4LD and is booking until March 2nd.
