F

or city dwelling singletons, the search for love has become more and more problematic over the last decade. With our fast paced lifestyle and increased reliance on online relationships, the journey to find ‘the one’ can be a bumpy road.

But for one local author, the traumatic hunt for a mate provided material for a career defining moment.

Jo Burke took her nightmare dating experiences and turned them into not only a hilarious stand-up routine, but also a hugely successful book. Entitled iScream: From Strangers with Love, the dating guide gives readers the lowdown of the dos and don’ts of the online search for love.

But it was only after a couple of career bumps that Jo - who was born in Eltham and now resides in Kidbrooke – picked up a pen and decided to chart her disastrous dating experiences.

After putting herself through drama school, Jo found the lack of work for actors had become wearisome and told me: “I got tired of waiting for the phone to ring so started to think about developing some stuff I’d been writing. I started to make a pilot sketch show and develop my own work.”

And a succession of successful stand-up shows followed, with Jo gaining a plethora of four-star reviews on the Edinburgh Fringe.

But alongside her successful performance career Jo wasn’t finding her personal life was quite so fruitful. And so after being coerced by friends, Jo decided it was time to share her struggles with her audiences.

“I decided to come out as myself, Jo Burke, and I thought it would be a good time to release the book I’d written, which was semiautobiographical, about the years when I was single and doing online dating, with nightmare after nightmare, after nightmare.”

Jo self published the book and it was a roaring success. And almost as soon as it was circulated, she found her very own Prince Charming, on a dating app.

Jo laughed and said: “It’s really weird. I spent all those years of pain, agonizing about trying to find the right person through online dating and I met him on Tinder, so that was hilarious.”

And it seems like it’s the perfect match as among other things, Jo’s beau, Phillip Price is a very talented photographer and artist.

So the couple set about compiling a children’s book together. Entitled Standing on Custard, Jo’s book of verse is accompanied by some beautiful watercolours by Phillip.

And it was such a success that the talented pair has since gone on to publish a second book entitled A Squirrel’s Tail.

her talent. She regularly goes into schools to promote literacy and has recently been judging the entries for the Eltham Arts Writing on the Wall competition, of which she says: “It’s such a privilege, I can’t even begin to tell you.”

The results of the challenge will be announced at an evening of celebration on World Book Night, the 23 April at Eltham Library.

In the meantime Jo is concentrating on her new book, which is set to be released at the end of April. Entitled Molly, Chip and the Chair, it’s the first in a series of Molly adventures, a collection of books with a disabled lead character.

Jo tells me: “My dream and mission is for these to be found in the 'mainstream' children's book section in every bookshop. Not tucked away as special needs.

It's vital that children and adults

without disabilities get used to seeing and reading about all types of children on a daily basis. I find it unfathomable that a book with a disabled lead character might only be seen by children and adults that are looking in the special needs section.

The earlier children understand that we are all different and that it is our uniqueness that makes the world so amazing the better off we will be.”

Celebrate 40 years of Grease at Greenwich Picturehouse A

re you a T-Bird or a Pink Lady? Well, you can don your leathers and slick your hair back, or pull on you pencil skirt and pink jacket ready for some dancing at Greenwich Picturehouse to celebrate 40 years since the release of the classic musical film Grease.

Loosen your vocal chords, ready to belt out your favourites as you join fans for two special sing-along screenings. Who doesn’t love replicating the famously cool Danny Zuko dance moves in “Greased Lightnin”, or attempting an unattractive body-wave to “You’re the One That I Want”?

Just the thought of squeezing into some ill-fitting leather spanx in the vain attempt to hit the high notes in “Hopelessly Devoted to You” makes me go gaga with excitement.

But it’s not just me who loves the classic movie. In fact Grease has grossed over £280 million worldwide since its release in 1978. It knocked The Sound of

Music off the top spot after a 13-year reign as the highestgrossing musical ever. Grease has since been eclipsed by the film versions of Les Misérables, MAMMA MIA! and Beauty and the Beast, but you would struggle to find someone who has never seen it. If you put on the “Grease Mega Mix” at any party, you’ll see the dance floor immediately filled with wannabe Sandys, Rizzos, Dannys and Kenickies, such is the film’s broad ranging appeal.

Grease stars John Travolta as the ultra cool Danny and Olivia Newton-John as the preppy Sandy. Filled with teenage angst and a fairy tale love story, it’s continued to captivate audiences for four decades. And it’s recently been reimagined for a new generation of musical lovers with a live action version for television, which starred Broadway favourite Aaron Tveit and High School Musical’s Vanessa Hudgens.

But there’s nothing quite like the original, so why not join in with the fun at Greenwich Picturehouse?

rguably one of the world’s most renowned artists, Claude Monet is credited as creating Impressionsim. And in an Exhibition on Screen at Greenwich Picturehouse you can find out more about the man behind the paintings in his own words.

Based on letters and other private writings, I, Claude Monet gives new insight into the artist, whose works are perhaps the most influential of the 19th and 20th century.

Claude Monet was an inspirational talent and personality and this exhibition on screen is back by popular demand. Known

for his struggles with depression and poverty, the film sheds light on some of the inspiration and motivation for his most famous works, including those painted in the Giverny Garden.

Monet is known to have got frustrated with his work. According to some reports, he destroyed a number of paintings—estimates

range as high as 500 works.

But it’s for his masterful use of colour and light that he is perhaps best known and he is quoted to have once said: "For me, a landscape does not exist in its own right, since its appearance changes at every moment; but the surrounding atmosphere brings it to life - the light and the air which

vary continually. For me, it is only the surrounding atmosphere which gives subjects their true value."

His letters reveal a humorous side to this artist genius.

Greenwich runners ready for Marathon challenge J

ohn Ford is dipping his toes in the marathon world for the first time.

“I’m really not a runner. I get horrific shin splints,” he told the Weekender.

He was inspired to run by a dream last November. “I dreamt I was running the marathon and came last. I couldn’t shake it off,” he said. “I’ve got a friend who runs a homeless charity in Deptford, Bench Outreach, so I contacted him, totally convinced, and asked how do I get a place.

He told me to buy a new pair of running shoes and he got me a place.”

running, and struggled to run three miles initially. “I went to see a physio, Sarah Hayes, she raised an eyebrow but gave me stretches to do and said ‘in the worst case you can walk it,’” he said. “I've never been sporty and whenever I've tried to run I've been stopped by shin splints.

So this is my first time and it's a miracle - I've been helped by a very good physio.”

John works on Greenwich High Road, where he runs the film department of his digital agency Contra, and lives in Grove Park.

He’s been training with Bench Outreach CEO Declan Flynn.

“He taught me all about drinking gels and carb loading; he’s

running the Madrid marathon on the same day,” John said.

John’s hoping to finish the marathon under 4-hours and 30 minutes, and is aiming for 4 hours 10 minutes. He’s running for Bench Outreach.

Claire Tomes is another first-timer. “Running the marathon is one of those things that’s been on my bucket list,” she said. “I go out and watch it every year, and I’m quite driven when I set a goal and work towards it.”

“I’m not a runner per se, but I’m quite into gym,” she said.

“I was ill in 2016. I had a heart defect and had surgery to correct it. I’m raising money for the British Heart Foundation. They’re a great charity.”

Claire, who lives near Greenwich Market, started off aiming just to cross the finish line on marathon day, Sunday, April 22.

“Then I realised that four hours seems to be an achievable target, and I went on a training camp in January and the trainer said I should aim for 3 hours 45. I’ve done some 10kms and one half marathon, and I have a good base fitness.”

Claire has gotten into the habit of running home from work as part of her training.

“My fitness levels have improved. I think I’ll keep running home a few times a week,” she said.

Esther Briault Hutter is running the marathon with her fiancé Gregor Dickie.

This is the couple’s first marathon, although they’ve already done a couple of half marathons. “We’re running for the Teenage Cancer Trust, which is the headline charity of marathon this year,” Esther told the Weekender. “The charity is close to both of us. I had a housemate from university who passed away at age 25.

When we saw they were this year’s charity, we knew we had to do it.”

Tina Push is a long-time runner but she’s tackling her first marathon this year.

“I’ve only ever done half marathons before, but it’s been one of those things that's been in the back of my mind for years,” she said.

“I always go out on marathon day and support people and cheer. I’ve got to give it a go.”

“I stupidly bashed my knee at the beginning

of the year. Everything was going well, I got to 20 miles before Christmas; I was really going for it. Then I had a home accident, created severe ligament damage, and wasn’t allowed to run for a while. I was supposed to have run the Big Half, and had to pull out at the last minute. But I’ve been in the gym the whole time.” The West Greenwich local said she’d “love to get sub 4-hours” but is aiming for around four or four hours thirty minutes. “I’m running for Tommy’s, which is a fantastic charity that does research into

Greenwich, are tying the knot in September, and hadn’t planned on a wedding and marathon training in the same year. “We run anyway, but we started training for this on Boxing Day,” Esther said.

The duo has been clocking up the miles running four times a week, covering between 25 miles and 30 miles a week.

“I’ll be glad when it’s over,” Esther said. “We’re going to run it together, and the aim is to finish it, hopefully under five hours.”

I

t’s been another busy year for Ferrier Operatic Society and after the huge success of their singalong Pirates of Penzance From Scratch in February; the group is nearly ready to stage their next show.

This time they will turn to Gilbert and Sullivan’s Iolanthe, a satirical comedy operetta set amongst a turbulent political time in London.

“It’s about the House of Lords and the fairies," company member Lesley Corti told me and I couldn’t help but detect a hint of glee in her voice at the timely choice of show.

The story follows Strephon, who wants to marry Phyllis, but as Phyllis is a ward of court she needs the Lord Chancellor’s permission. However, the Lord Chancellor wants her for himself and to make things even more fantastical, Strephon is not fully human.

“He’s a fairy down to the waist but his legs are mortal,” Lesley giggles and says, “Strephon calls the fairies who empower him to become a member of the House of Lords.”

Set in the 1950s Iolanthe is one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s most famous operas, which was the first work to premiere at the Savoy and the first new theatre production in the world to be illuminated entirely with electric lights. Its political poking not only targets peers of the realm, but also lampoons other figures of the time including Queen Victoria and the Prime Minister William Gladstone.

Opera aficionados often describe it as the partnership’s best work, with Sullivan’s melodious score wonderfully interwoven with Gilbert’s libretto. Featuring wellknown standards including "Tripping hither, tripping thither", "When Britain really ruled the waves" and "Nay, tempt me not", it continues to be one of the most popular operettas ever written.

Lesley explains: “It’s filled with all sorts of typical Gilbert and Sullivan silliness. It’s light-hearted, frivolous, frothy and a good evening out.”

ith the impending improvement in the weather (or at least we can hope) and spring just around the corner, there’s no better time to get out and about in the borough. We are blessed with an abundance of green space and if, like me, you have a canine companion, you can roam in the fresh, crisp sunshine without a care in the world.

But if you fancy a drink and a bite to eat on your travels, finding somewhere that will welcome your furry friends can sometimes become challenging.

Luckily, however, if you venture up through Greenwich Park and across the first part of Blackheath, you will be rewarded for your venture at the Hare and Billet.

friendly venue, not only welcomes dogs, but will actually make your hairy hound the centre of attention.

If you’re not a fan of the fluffy friends, you need not be put off however, as the interior is wonderfully spacious, and with the option to eat in the decadent dining area, you can steal yourself away from any furry, or not so furry occupant, should you want to.

As I was with hound (and housemate) I chose to sit in a lovely little booth in the front window and gaze out at the spring flowers, which had just started to peep through the undergrowth across on the heath. As we were there for a midday pint and snack, we didn’t burden ourselves with any of the more classy fare that was on offer and instead selected a couple of pints and some fulsome nosh to nourish us for the rest of our outing.

sweet potato fries and red slaw, while my housemate munched his way through a double British beef burger, with Jarlsberg cheese and skinny fries. Harley (the black Labrador) thoroughly enjoyed the fact that there was a whole table dedicated to doggies and chewed on some delightful treats, while we tried our best to consume our enormous meals.

The cuisine wasn’t flash, but was well cooked and well-presented and so did the job. And after another pint to make sure we were fully lubricated, we ventured out into the spring sunshine feeling replete and ready for the walk back down through the park.

T

he gas holder on the Greenwich Peninsula is a local landmark - it was the biggest in the world when it was built. Its owners, Southern Gas Networks are determined to remove it. All over the country gasholders have been demolished. Locally the two holders at Bell Green are equally likely to come down, despite being listed by Lewisham council. North of the river many holders have been demolished despite local campaigns and there is seemingly very little that anybody can get do to stop them.

the director of the gas company in the 19th century. It was built in the 1880s on his revolutionary ‘cylindrical shell principle’. While the structure appears to be simple it is in fact very complex. It is far taller than would normally be expected, about 180 feet tall. It has four ‘lifts’ – the sections which go up and down when it is filled with gas and then emptied- and it is the first holder ever built to this size.

It can hold about 8.2 million cubic feet of gas. This great height was made possible by new materials and saved a lot of money. It also meant that it cost less to store the gas and on Sundays gas workers could be encouraged to go to church rather than make more gas – there would be plenty to cook their Sunday dinners.

It was also a deliberate decision not to put on it all the decoration that is on older holders. It was thought that industrial structures should be themselves and not try to dress themselves up as something fancy.

This was part of a whole new set of ideas about art and architecture which was soon to become very fashionable.

Soon after it was built a second – even bigger – holder was built next to it. This was sadly demolished in the 1980s.

has had its problems. It narrowly escaped in 1917 when there was a terrible explosion in an armaments factory on the other side of the river, at Silvertown. I understand that two workers at East Greenwich got medals for actions they took to save the gas supply for local people after the explosion – and we should remember that wartime heroes are sometimes to be found in quite ordinary places. In the 1980s the holder was subject to an attack by the IRA, but it was repaired and survived.

I have only given a few brief details here, but a lot more is available. When the first planning application went into Greenwich Council there was a very detailed history with it – written by a leading expert on the subject and someone I know well and very much respect. I would recommend reading it for all the details.

A couple of years ago I went to a big conference about gas holders. This was run by the gas industry but many historians, like me, were allowed to go. We heard all about how they were all going to be pulled down – and about how there were protests about this. The gas industry people just didn’t understand. They liked their holders too, and were actually quite proud of them but they didn’t think other people liked them too.

All round the world gas holders are being kept and used for other things – shopping malls, theatres, sports arenas. Here, in London at Kings Cross, where the gas holders were unusual and were seen by everyone who went north by train, a wealthy developer was persuaded to keep them and to build flats inside them – and the same thing has been done in Dublin. As more holders have been used for other things, so architects have gained experience and problems have been confronted and are being solved.

The gas industry has missed a big and important opportunity to capitalise on their past. What should have been assets have been turned into liabilities and working with local

authorities and local communities has been beyond them. East Greenwich and the Peninsula need something to be proud of – something that marks them out from other communities and a lot of people feel that the holder does this. The same is true for many many other communities who do not want to see ‘their’ holder go.
