Budding entrepreneur Bexleyheath botanist Emma Sibley talks terrariums with the Weekender

E

mma Sibling has always had green-fingers. At university, where she studied surface design, she began making bottle gardens in jars. “It became very real and really addictive,” she said. When her friend opened Lerryn’s café on Rye Lane in Peckham and asked Emma to decorate it with terrariums, she stumbled upon a captive market. “People wanted to buy the terrariums,” she said.

Her business budded from there. Now Emma is bringing the traditionally Victorian terrariums to modern gardeners. She has a book about indoor gardening, runs workshops, and has opened London’s first terrarium shop in New Cross.

“I really love that you can make them and they will just sit there. You don’t need to do much to them, and you can watch them grow over time,” Emma said. “I didn’t know the history –they date way back.”

Terrariums weren’t always decorative. Originally they were used for transporting plants across the globe. “It’s a stable environment, you don’t get any dips in temperature or humidity, and it protects plant from outside elements like dust, and pollution,” she said. “We kind of steer well clear of using succulents and cacti –they need dry, arid, desert -you see them in the geometric trendy terrariums. We specialise in the closed terrariums, which are selfsustaining, and don’t need to water.

You give them an initial water, and the heat and oxygen they produce condenses.”

Emma has picked up an education in botany through self-teaching, and several short courses. “It’s a lot of self-initiated study,” she said.

“Whether in your home or work environment, having plants just brings a touch of serenity and life,” she said.

“They’re something to concentrate on. My favourite thing is to get up in the morning, and water the plants.

And if you move you can just take them with you; they’ll always be a constant.”

Emma’s book Urban Botanics: An Indoor Plant Guide for Modern Gardeners includes descriptions of over 60 plants, accompanied by beautiful illustrations by Dutch artist Maaike Koster.

“There’s a mixture of plants. We included ones we knew the beginner gardener would like, some really interesting ones that we knew people would be able to find in this country, and types that have interesting facts and leaf structures,” Emma said.

London Terrariums, which opened last year, sells potted plants, terrariums, and watering cans. “My housemates were getting annoyed finding moss and soil everywhere so I needed a studio,” Emma said.

The gardener has been running terrarium-making workshops for three years. “It’s two hours of history, the science behind how they work, demonstrations and the rest of the course is picking plants. Everyone seems to pick it up really quickly,” she said. “We use humidity loving plants: ferns, moss, Ficus –plants we know will do well.”

Greenwich Picturehouse is hosting We Love Wes Anderson: a season dedicated to the auteur’s films. Known for his distinctive aesthetics, frequent use of patterns and palettes, symmetry on screen, and quirky character-driven stories, the Golden Globe and BAFTA winning director, screenwriter, actor, and producer has enjoyed a career spanning over two decades .

His next film Isle of Dogs is due to open Berlinale film festival on March 23.

Fantastic Mr Fox: March 12 at 8:45pm Wes Anderson’s his first animated film and first film adaptation, Fantastic Mr. Fox is a 2009 American stop-motion animated comedy film based on Roald Dahl's children's novel of the same name.

The film is about a fox who steals food each night from three mean and wealthy farmers. They are fed up with Mr. Fox's theft and try to kill him, so they dig their way into the foxes' home, but the animals are able to outwit the farmers and live underground.

The film was released in the autumn of 2009 and stars George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray, Willem Dafoe, Michael Gambon, and Owen Wilson

The 2014 Academy award winning comedy film features an ensemble cast. Ostensibly based on a non-existent novel, and told with a literary narrative, the story follows the lives of three gifted siblings who experience great success in youth, and even greater disappointment and failure in adulthood.

The children's eccentric father Royal Tenenbaum (Gene Hackman) leaves them in their adolescent years, returning to them after they have grown, and falsely claiming to have a terminal illness. Long after he was shunned by his family, Royal gradually reconciles with his children and ex-wife (Anjelica Huston).

In this 2007 American comedy-drama, a businessman in India fails to catch his train—called "The Darjeeling Limited"—as it pulls out of a station; he is beaten to it by a younger man, Peter Whitman. Charlton star Shona to be Patron at the Playhouse W

est End star Shona White will be tackling a very different role in 2018, as she becomes the first ever Patron of the esteemed Playhouse Theatre.

The actress - who lives in Charlton – has been bestowed the honour by new theatre manager Jenna Harvey and becomes not only the theatre’s first Patron, but also the first Patron for an Ambassador Theatre Group venue in London.

“I am thrilled to become Patron of such an historic venue which holds a special place in my heart.

I am looking forward to supporting The Playhouse as it goes from strength to strength” Shona White said, “She’s [Jenna Harvey] got lots of ideas about how to make the theatre a landmark venue.

Basically I’ve become the patron so I can provide a link between the producers and the audience; a friendly face.”

And it’s a place with which Shona is very familiar: “I performed at the Playhouse Theatre - I did Rocky Horror there - so I have a link from performing there and I love going as an audience member as well.

I think it’s the prettiest theatre in London. It’s got that way of feeling very intimate even though it’s a fairly sizeable auditorium, it’s gorgeous.”

The honour marks yet another success in what has been a long and illustrious career for the Charlton based performer.

Originally from Scotland, the young Shona White longed to move to London to train as a performer and at the age of 17 her wish came true when she took up a place at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts. She followed her three years of training at the school by completing a post graduate course at the Royal Academy of Music before landing what she describes as her “Dream

Job” in the London production of Les Misérables in 1998.

A wealth of leading roles followed including a stint in Merrily We Roll Along at the Donmar Warehouse - where she worked with Sam Mendez and Michael Grandage - which Shona says was “A major bucket list Item” and adds “Sondheim himself came over to rehearse with us and it was fantastic.”

An eminent leading lady, Shona has also played Elphaba in Wicked at the Apollo Victoria, Florence in Craig Revel Horwood’s Award Winning UK Tour of Chess and most recently Donna in MAMMA MIA! at London’s Novello Theatre.

Shona said, “I’m still here 20, 21 years later still doing it. It’s not the easiest of professions to choose because it’s incredibly over populated. Along the way there have been a couple of months when I haven’t been in a show and I’ve had to try to think of something else to do, but there isn’t anything else I want to do other than this, so I’m still here, I’m still doing it, still plugging away.”

Shona has lived in southeast London for some ten years and said, “I just love this area. I’ve lived all over London and this the place that I’m the happiest.”

But with a plethora of plans afoot, The Playhouse Theatre will become something of a second home over the next year, “There are quite a few exciting things in the pipeline for 2018, I’m very excited about what I can do and what I can offer them.”

The busy performer is not letting her day job suffer however and will be singing with renowned composer Scott Alan at Live at Zédel later this month and starting an exciting new job in April, but despite my best persuasion techniques, she wouldn’t tell me which long running show it is with.

t’s now time to make some real decisions about your future - once you have taken your GCSEs you officially will be an adult, writes Kevin Quinn...

Mum and dad will no longer be responsible for your education, nor will the government; and believe it or not, neither will your teachers.

It will be entirely up to you to decide which path you take - and while everyone including the government is heavily focused on apprenticeships, there will be many of you who will want to follow the traditional academic route. Of course the results you get at secondary school will to a large extent determine what you do in further education. But now is the time to look at what sixth forms and further education institutes are offering.

Unlike secondary school admissions you have the freedom to go where you like - it does not have to be local - but bear in mind journey times.

You don’t want to be exhausted before you arrive at college!

Being in the final year of your GCSEs, you will have a fair idea of the results you are likely to achieve and make sure that when you call or visit a sixth form or college you find out the exact qualifications you need to get on the courses that you like the look of.

The truth is, if you are really passionate about a course but feel that you might not get the grades, it would be worth thinking about re-sitting. After spending the whole of your life in school you might think that re-sitting any GCSE would be completely out of the question.

However, at your age, making sure that you do something that you feel passionate about and enjoy is absolutely vital.

Countless people have had to work that bit harder and give something a go twice before they succeed. The experience at sixth form or college will be so different to that at school that you should find the change enough to warrant the extra effort and time it takes to re-sit an examine or

Now is the time to look at what sixth forms and further education institutes are offering. start a new one to get on to the course you are ultimately after.

The relationship with most of your teachers will be very different, as they will treat you more like an adult. After all you don’t have to be there - it is your choice.

This means that lessons are normally more relaxed and you usually spend more time with smaller groups than you would do at secondary school.

While there is little doubt that A-levels are much harder than GCSEs, the fact that you have fewer subjects and are studying your favourite or best subjects means you will find the selfmotivation to get to grips with it.

The work will be much more in depth, but probably more interesting. Essay subjects at A-level are much more about analysis and evaluation than just pure facts. This means that you can no longer get away with having a basic knowledge of a subject and then blagging the exam or just learning reams of facts without actually understanding them.

On the plus side you definitely get more freedom, including free periods (usually eleven or so hours a week), which allows you to plan when and how you work.

As well as the courses, check out the facilities at the sixth forms and colleges you are interested in, as they can help make your whole working environment a better one.

Don’t rule out private schools

PICTURED: Blackheath High School and the Girls’ Day School Trust (GDST) took to the roof of their new Senior School building last October, to celebrate a significant milestone in its multi-million pound redevelopment, with a traditional ‘Topping Out’ ceremony.

Independent or private schools should be considered for those academic-minded pupils looking to go to sixth form.

For many people whose families may never have attended an independent school, the hurdle may too high however, there is a push to open up places and increase the number of bursaries.

As with all schools you should shop around and see what is on offer by attending an open day or evening – you have nothing to lose.

The headteacher of one local independent school, Mrs Carol Chandler-Thompson of Blackheath High School, told the Greenwich Weekender: “A UK independent school education is one of the UK’s fastest growing exports and with many schools offering generous bursaries or scholarships, independent schools are more accessible than might be known.

“Free from government directives and political whim, independent schools have the freedom to design their own curriculum and select the examination courses best suited to their students. We can provide a broad and enriching curriculum with greater opportunity to study subjects like Modern Languages and Creative Arts, many of which are fast disappearing from the state system. With a greater emphasis upon co-curricular provision (at Blackheath High, we have over 50 clubs and societies, as diverse as martial arts and feminist society), students gain confidence and invaluable soft skills such as resilience and leadership.

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Council of the Royal Borough of Greenwich on 15th January 2018 made the above-mentioned Orders under sections 6, 45, 46, 49 and 124 of and Part IV of Schedule 9 to the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, as amended.

The Orders will come into operation on 22nd January 2018.

2. The general effect of the Orders will be to: (a) extend the existing Blackheath (BK) and Kidbrooke North (KN) Controlled Parking Zones (CPZs); (b) retain double yellow line ‘at any time’ waiting restrictions where they are currently located and provide additional

double yellow line ‘at any time’ waiting restrictions:

(i) at road junctions within the extended parts of BK and KN CPZs; and
