KEEPING IT FRESH The Farmers' Market returns to Royal Arsenal Woolwich on January 13, with locally sourced and produced artisan food. PLASTIC FANTASTIC Help create an eco-friendly art installation which will be on display across London. Bring your plastic bottles along and help transform them into icicle-like chandeliers for display during the London Lumiere 2018 Festival. From Mars bars to millions

It was quite some time after those inauspicious beginnings that Sam went on to win X Factor and its £1 million recording contract. “My mum would always say I was an amazing singer,” the amazing singer tells me during a break from rehearsals. “But my mum would say that; I wanted to hear it from someone who didn’t know me personally so I started entering myself in local talent and karaoke competitions, and just kept winning them.” Sam Bailey tells me this with no hint of boastfulness, just plain, humble honesty. After a childhood spent living in the boroughs of Greenwich, Bromley and Bexley, the young Ms Bailey didn’t know what career path she should take. “I actually didn’t know at that age what I wanted to do, I was too young,” she recalls. It was around this point that she decided to take herself off to the holiday camps as a Blue Coat to sing in front of hundreds of people every night. She explains that daring deed: “I thought I needed to chuck myself in at the deep end.” As youth left and growing up took over, any thoughts of a singing career were put on hold as Sam raised a family and took a job as a prison officer in the Midlands. X Factor was regular Saturday night viewing in the household and Sam remembers how much her children enjoyed watching. It was this that inspired her to enter herself. “For me, it was all about seeing their faces, how they felt when they saw mummy’s face on the TV.” Sam went on to win the series after seeing off tough opposition. “It was a blur, a big blur!” she says excitedly. “It’s almost four years ago now since I won the show and it’s been incredible, I’ve loved every second of it. I have been doing some pretty fantastic things off the back of it so I’m very lucky.” One of those fantastic things was supporting Beyoncé, which must be every singer’s dream. Plus she got to open the National Television Awards with Michael Bolton and sing with the Coldstream Guards. “I sang a version of Abide with Me which had been mixed with The Last Post,” she says with pride. “To

get the opportunity to do that was brilliant.” Sam has also had number one records and toured in the musical Chicago. But now the woman who has been singing since she was a little girl is now in Kay Mellor’s Fat Friends the Musical, which is coming to a theatre near us soon. She plays chip shop owner Betty whose daughter cannot fit into the wedding dress of her dreams. “I do think there are a lot of similarities between myself and Betty, the way she speaks and her attitude,” she reveals. “The audiences have really taken to it, they are finding everything really funny and so are we. I am very lucky, I almost have to pinch myself when I am in a show like

this because it’s such a joy.” When Fat Friends hits town Sam’s mum and friends will be going along to see it, and she promises a good night. “It will have you on the edge of your seat but also falling off it with laughter.” Fat Friends the Musical is on at The Churchill Theatre, Bromley High Street, BR1 1HA, from January 16-20. Getting there is Half the fun Runners can now apply to race alongside star athletes, including Sir Mo Farah, in the Big Half, the new half marathon winding its way through the borough in March. The multi-Olympic winning athlete will go head-to-head with Callum Hawkins, who came fourth in this year’s IAAF World Championships marathon in London.

The event is open to adults and children and will take place on Sunday, March 4, 2018. The Big Half’s 13.1-mile route will begin at Tower Bridge and finish in Greenwich, passing through the boroughs of Southwark, Tower Hamlets, Lewisham and Greenwich. The Little Half – a relay event – will take place on the same day starting in Southwark Park at

12.30pm and finishing at Cutty Sark in Greenwich, and is open to people of all ages and abilities. There will also be the Big Half Festival going on throughout the day, with food and music on offer in Greenwich Park. Three different types of entries are open for the Big Half event; the Good for Age category, for runners showcasing impressive

times in previous half marathons; the Championship category, for runners wishing to take part in the 2018 British Half Marathon Championships; the charity entries category for runners wishing to sign up with charities. Good for Age and Championship entries close on January 5. Charity entries and entries for the Little Half close on February 2.

Sport sessions for blind and partially-sighted people The charity for blind and partially sighted people, South East London Vision (SELVIS), is partnering up with GLL, South London Special League, to deliver four multi-sport sessions.

It’s an opportunity to get active, have fun, and try three different sports in the space of two hours. Sports include soundball tennis, VI cricket, and walking football. All abilities welcome. Activities may be subject to

THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI In cinemas 12th January, this dark comedy stars Frances McDormand as a vengeful mother who declares war on the local police department. After the local police fail to find any suspects for her daughter’s rape and murder, she purchases three billboards to call public attention to the unsolved crime.

New Cross born Gary Oldman –who went to West Greenwich School in Deptford and studied acting at the Young People’s Theatre in Greenwich back in the ‘70s-has already set tongues wagging with his portrayal of Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour. In cinemas from January 12, Joe Wright directs Oldman in the biopic following the early days of World War II where the newly appointed Prime Minister must decide whether to negotiate with Hitler or fight on against incredible odds.

A new Disney/Pixar movie is always something to sing and dance about and the studio’s latest offering, Coco, set on the Day of the Dead, is no exception. In cinemas from January 19, the exuberant animation, with an emotional message at its heart, sees a young musician named Miguel accidentally travelling to the Land of the Dead, where he meets a colourful and kooky collection of dearly departed souls. Who knew the afterlife could be so much fun?

EARLY MAN The creators of Wallace & Gromit direct their stop-motion genius towards the dawn of time! Described by director Nick Park as “an underdog sports movie with a prehistoric twist”, Early Man sees The Theory of Everything’s Eddie Redmayne playing Dug, a shy caveman who turns out to be his valley’s only hope of stopping evil Bronze advocate Lord Nooth (Tom Hiddleston). Out January 26, the whimsical delight sculpts out an impressive new world for Park’s quirky characters. It’s also Nick Park’s first feature film (as director) since 2005’s Oscar-winning The Curse Of The Were-Rabbit.

Greenwich Theatre is gearing up for some epic events next year when the renowned classics specialists, Lazarus Theatre Company, take up a twelvemonth residency.

Masters of staging monumental pieces of theatre in a fresh and contemporary fashion, Lazarus Theatre Company - led by Artistic Director Ricky Dukes and Associate Director Gavin Harrington-Odedra - will open their season with the critically acclaimed production of Christopher Marlowe’s Edward II, which recently played at the Tristan Bates Theatre in central London. I met up with the pair at Greenwich Theatre, to find out a bit more about how the residency became a reality and they told me what local audiences can look forward to seeing in 2018. “The season is a mixture of classics, modern classics and there’s even a musical in there; all to be revealed shortly.” Ricky Dukes - who lives just minutes away from the theatre, next to Maze Hill Pottery - tells me. Ricky originally trained as an actor, but after feeling disillusioned with the type of work that was on offer, reluctantly created Lazarus. Ricky told me, “I was adamant not to start a company, because that’s what out of work actors did.” After a few false starts, the conception proved to be a successful one and from humble beginnings in Mornington Cresent, the company worked its way up through the theatrical ranks performing highly acclaimed productions all over the country. Originally from New Zealand, Associate Director Gavin Harrington-Odedra joined the throng in 2010 and the fortunes of Lazarus Theatre Company have been on the up and up ever since. They thrilled audiences at Greenwich Theatre in 2013 when they performed in rep with hugely successful productions of Shakespeare’s King Lear and Marlowe’s Dido Queen of Carthage. The relationship they built up with the local theatergoing public was very important to the company and so for the last four years, they have been hoping to return. But it wasn’t until Greenwich Theatre’s Executive Director, James Haddrell watched their prodigious production of The Caucasian Chalk Circle at the Brockley Jack Theatre earlier this year that the conversation about becoming a permanent fixture became a reality. Ricky enthuses, “It was a massive success, which was pretty exciting to see.” After some toing and froing, the twelve-month residency was agreed and it’s going to result in a big push to get the locals more engaged with the theatre. “We started to talk about how theatre interacts with the community around here. Do people know there’s a theatre

here? And if they do, what do they know about it, what do they feel about it? With a residency it means we can find out about that and invest proper amounts of time into getting people in to see works that they probably wouldn’t usually see” Ricky explains. Gavin interjects, “That’s why we do theatre; to engage an audience.” Ricky continues, “Having a residency in a big theatre means we can be more open with our pricing structure, so for each production in the spring season there are 500 seats at just £10. We want people around here to get to know about the venue.” The theatrical duo also tell me that there will be the opportunity to purchase a season ticket, which will enable bearers to see all three of the first season’s shows at a discounted rate. But it will only be the ticket prices that are small, as the productions which the company has chosen to stage - are huge. They will kick off with the epic Edward II and Ricky tells me, “It’s set fairly contemporary. One of the things we did was strip it back to almost think of it like a Greek tragedy.

The idea behind the production is that they all enter this space, almost a gladiatorial arena, and once they enter, they can’t leave, so it has a kind of Greek tragedy meets Jacobean thriller meets modern day snuff movie, crime thriller and there’s lots of blood.” A nine strong cast will depict Edward II’s reign and his homoerotic relationship with Gaveston, in a production that Ricky describes as “Incredibly visceral, incredibly visual and definitely a theatrical experience.” “It’s this huge epic in a contemporary format that really raises up the immediate relevant political goings on.” Ricky explains, “Our production has a few twists and turns from the original so it certainly keeps people on the edge of their seat and you’ll actually come out feeing that it’s fresh, it’s new.”

DINO DATES SOUND OF MUSIC Churchill Theatre will be alive with The Sound of Music, as one of the greatest musicals of all time comes to Bromley. Running until Saturday, January 13, the show tells the true story of a singing family, and their escape to freedom at the start of WW2. More dates have been added to the huge Dinosaurs in the Wild experience, set to come roaring into the Greenwich Peninsula next month. The time travel adventure will see families transported back 67 million years, to encounter creatures like Tyrannosaurus roaming in the wild. Tourists will be taken by time machine to research station TimeBase 67, which has been built in the Late Cretaceous era. They will be able to drive, with their guides, though herds of dinosaurs, watch a dinosaur autopsy, see hatchlings emerge out of eggs and put their hands into dinosaur poo. Dinosaurs in the Wild opens on Monday, February 12, and was set to stay for three months. It will now stay in Greenwich until July 31, 2018. www.dinosaursinthewild.com

VISIT THE MOON Andy Weir, the author of best-selling The Martian, which was made into the 2017 movie starring Matt Damon, will be quizzed at The Royal Observatory. The event will start with a 380,000km ‘trip to the Moon’, taking a look at its pockmarked surface, before Andy talks about his new book, Artemis. The novel is set on in the lunar city of Artemis, where life is tough if you’re not rich. The event is from 7pm to 8.30pm on Thursday, January 11.
