Calls to revive docks name in regeneration of Rotherhithe

ROTHERHITHE RESIDENTS are calling for the historic name of Surrey Docks to be revived, replacing the current Surrey Quays which caused ‘uproar’ when it was brought in years ago.

At a recent heritage and culture meeting held by British Land – the developer behind the Canada Water regeneration masterplan – residents asked whether the area now known as Surrey Quays could be named Surrey Docks once again, and Steve Cornish, Chair of Friends of Russia Dock Woodland, has added his voice to the campaign.

The area where Surrey Quays shopping centre now stands was once part of the bustling Surrey Commercial Docks, before most of it was filled in and built on.

Surrey Docks is more than a name

T

HIS PAPER would be wholeheartedly behind any push to reclaim Surrey Docks.

We understood well why local people at the time and older residents still living there felt insulted by the name change over 25 years ago.

When Surrey Quays Shopping Centre opened it was seen by locals as a great thing, as the once thriving docks had been left redundant and the area depressed. But while many welcomed the new shopping complex, many disliked the change of name of the tube station.

Inevitably the rebranding extended to new people calling it Surrey Quays.

Generations of local people worked on the docks and a whole community identified with area dominated by the wharfs, cranes and ships that gave them a living. This rich history cannot be replaced by late 1980s rebranding. If we had gone down that route elsewhere, we could be calling Bermondsey SoBo (so near Borough) a rebranding at the same time tried by estate agents that happily was dismissed before it could really take hold.

Right direction for Old Kent Road

T

HE REVISED plans for the regeneration of the Old Kent Road are a step in the right direction, but small businesses especially have every right to be worried.

Certainly in all areas of Southwark that have seen regeneration the market rents have soared, leaving many unable to trade and being replaced by faceless blocks of luxury flats. Small businesses must continue to be a key part of the consultation process.

estate over 100 years remembered with his own plaque

A PLAQUE has been unveiled in memory of a resident on the estate where his family have lived for more than a century.

Ted Foreman became the last of his relatives to leave Rotherhithe Estate, in Plough Way, when he sadly died from cancer at the age of 78 on January 14 this year.

Generations of the former car salesman’s family had lived on the estate since it first opened in 1915.

To honour his memory, a plaque was unveiled outside the estate’s revamped community centre last Thursday, December 14.

Mr Foreman’s cousins, Maureen Doran and Yvonne Quirk, who also grew up on the estate but later moved away, returned to witness the unveiling alongside other family members.

Speaking to the News, Mrs Doran said the estate had changed “ever such a lot”. “My grandparents came here when it first opened with their two children - which was my mum and Ted’s mum - and they grew up here on the estate then they got married and had us,” said the 79-year-old.

“We used to have people come round dancing in the street to earn money because after the war ended people didn’t have any and we had gypsies selling flowers and if someone died during the war we used to have a telegram and all the children would run out to see who had died.

“We used to scrub the communal stairs and if you were too old to do it the children would do it for sixpence.”

while working in Peek Frean biscuit factory in Bermondsey, recalled playing in the debris caused by bomb raids during WWII. “I can remember from about the age of four spending the nights in the basement as an air raid shelter with loads of other people sleeping on bunk beds and my sister sleeping in the laundry basket,” she said.

Mrs Doran added that the unveiling of the plaque in her cousin’s name was “overwhelming”.

“Ted wouldn’t believe it,” she said.

“He was a very, very quiet person and didn’t expect anything from anyone.

He was an extraordinarily nice person.”

The estate’s renovated community centre was also officially unveiled at

the event by Matt Parsonage, head of communities at Clarion Futures.

“It was an underused housing office but now it’s been kitted out for training purposes,” he said.

“The main hall is a key space but also used as a nursery and there are two big training rooms plus another room for things like construction training.

“The front and back of the centre were really neglected and we thought there was no point in refurbishing the centre and not doing the public realm.”

Women’s officer calls for police bosses to intervene with harrasment on streets to clamp down on mysogyny

WOLF-WHISTLING and harrassing women on the street should be made a hate crime to be investigated by police, the women’s officer for the Bermondsey Labour party has said.

Nottinghamshire Police led a pilot scheme last year, which saw incidents such as wolf-whistling, verbal abuse and taking photographs without consent recorded as hate crimes.

Leanne Werner, women’s officer for Bermondsey and Old Southwark Labour party, has now written to Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick, London’s Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime Sophie Linden, and Southwark Borough Commander Simon Messinger, calling on them to do the same.

She asked that the Met “not only treat and list misogyny as a hate crime, but that hate crime motivated by hostility on the basis of sex should treated as an aggravated offence”.

“Most women have experienced

some sort of harassment in their life and I just think in this century and this time enough is enough and it should be taken more seriously,” she told the News.

“If it was listed under a hate crime you could report it and I think it would be taken more seriously and people would think actually this behaviour is not acceptable.

“I think in Nottingham it has gone quite well: because it’s been listed as a hate crime, it’s empowered people to report it.

“I know it sounds quite strict but I think it will make people feel it’s less acceptable.”

“This is only one part of it – the other part is educating boys better about what a healthy relationship looks like.”

Ms Werner said Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Neil Coyle planned to submit an early day motion to discuss the issue in Parliament.

“I think while it’s all in the media at the moment, this is a good time to

change things; I don’t think we should just forget about it,” she added.

last Wednesday, December 13, Commissioner Cressida Dick said she was “deeply sceptical about the use of scarce police resources to clamp down on wolf-whistling”.

“For me, the jury is very much out,” she said. “Most of what you are talking about will be manifest in antisocial behaviour reports, perhaps harassment reports, other crime reports, and we do have some strong legislation that supports our crime work.

“I am sceptical about whether this is a sensible way to use police resources

in order to protect women and girls better.”

Ms Dick added that she was waiting to receive a report from Nottinghamshire about the outcome of the pilot scheme.

A women’s officer’s duties include encouraging women to join the party, building links with women and the wider electorate through campaigning, and ensuring the constituency’s priorities reflect the views and concerns of women.

Labour rules state that a women’s officer must be a woman.

At a recent heritage and culture meeting held by British Land – the developer behind the Canada Water regeneration masterplan – residents asked whether the area now known as Surrey Quays could be named Surrey Docks once again.

The area where Surrey Quays shopping centre now stands was once part of the bustling Surrey Commercial Docks before most of it was filled in and built on.

Surrey Quays Overground station, in Lower Road, was also once called Surrey Docks station.

But although many now call the regenerated area Surrey Quays, there are also residents who still fondly refer to it as Surrey Docks and would like to see the historic name revived.

Rotherhithe resident Steve Cornish, who was at the meeting, said there was a “massive uproar” in the community when the area was renamed Surrey Quays in the late ‘80s. “It’s been there for hundreds of years but 25 years ago when the regeneration was first on the cards obviously the developers like to change the names of things and that

was one of the first things they changed – the name to Surrey Quays,” he told the News.

“The name has been stolen from the people of the area because developers wanted to call it something fancy.

“At the meeting a member of the public asked why people kept calling it Surrey Quays when most people born and bred in the area call it Surrey Docks.

“It surprised me that everyone in the room – no matter whether they had lived there ten minutes or ten years – called it Surrey Docks.”

Mr Cornish said he understood reverting back to the old name would not be “simple and straightforward” – but added that there was a “big

push” from residents at the meeting to find out whether it would be possible.

A British Land spokesperson said a question about the name of Surrey Quays Overground station was raised at the meeting.

The property company does not have the authority to change the name, however the spokesperson said it was happy to raise the matter with Transport for London as part of ongoing discussions.

The News asked for a comment on changing the wider area’s name just before going to press, but British Land was unable to respond in time.

L

ord ‘Bob’ Kerslake’s resignation as Chairman of King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust was a great shock. A tireless defender of the NHS, Bob cared passionately and in equal measure about patient care and the brilliant staff who looked after them. He was also a friend. I will miss working together to champion the world-class services for which King’s is rightly famous.

I have been a King’s Governor for six years and Lead Governor for the last two. The Governors play a critical role.

We hold the Trust’s non-executive directors accountable for the hospital’s board. With the Trust now in financial special measures, we will ensure King’s emerges with a sustainable financial plan to protect its services. We are also a direct link to the numerous communities its hospitals serves. Not only the communities that live near its hospitals and those from further afield but also King’s community of staff.

Every time I visit, I witness amazing feats of compassion, commitment and care that is unsurpassed.

Those services will continue to run despite last week’s announcements.

King’s will always be one of London’s major trauma centres responding, as it did this year, to major incidents. As important, its three hospitals - at Denmark Hill, Bromley and Orpington – will continue to provide services for over well one million people annually.

From paediatrics to frailty services; from cancer to liver transplantation, every day patients will continue to flow in and out of its hospitals safe in the knowledge that they have received the very best treatment. As Governors, we want the Trust to be financially stable, but we must guard against any unrealistic recovery measures that might impact clinical outcomes, risk patient safety or cut services.

I am very proud to be a King’s Governor. As we approach the NHS’ seventieth anniversary, we need a serious, open and public debate about its future and the vital role that King’s will fulfil.

‘I just can’t see where you can make savings’

STAFF, PATIENTS and unions united in protest outside King’s College Hospital on Tuesday after NHS Improvement (NHSI) placed the Trust into financial special measures last week.

With a £92m deficit, protestors fear that deep cuts will be implemented across the Trust by newly appointed Hospital Board Chair Ian Smith.

Last week, Lord Bob Kerslake quit his role as Chair, citing government underfunding to hospitals.

Frank Wood of Unite, who organised Tuesday morning’s demonstration, said that Trust staff were already labouring under a stretched budget without further cuts being added.

Frank said: “We need reassurance about what they (NHSI) want. The NHS has said that we need bigger savings, but the service is already cut and completely pared down.

“I just can’t see where you can make savings. It will just increase the burden on staff.

Care leavers exempt from council tax

YOUNG PEOPLE leaving care in Southwark will be exempt from paying council tax from next year.

Southwark councillors voted to make care leavers aged between eighteen and 24 automatically exempt from paying the tax from March.

The decision was backed by The Children’s Society, which led a

campaign encouraging local authorities to waive council tax payments for those leaving care.

Research from the national charity revealed council tax debt can be a particularly frightening experience for care leavers.

Councillor Fiona Colley, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for finance, modernisation and performance, said: “Children in care have already faced significant challenges and it is only right that we

give care leavers a helping hand as they take the next steps in their lives.

“I am pleased and incredibly proud that we are officially supporting the Children's Society's campaign and agreeing to exempt our eighteen to 24-year-old care leavers from Southwark council tax.”

Sam Royston, director of policy and research at The Children’s Society, said: “Care leavers have often experienced a really difficult upbringing and they may have

experienced abuse, neglect or family breakdown which can have a big impact upon their life chances.

“Without the family support most young people get as they become adults, care leavers often struggle to juggle their household bills and make ends meet.”

They added: “We’re delighted that Southwark Council is adopting this exemption, which will make life easier for many young people making the move into independent living.”

She said: “The nurses and consultants here are all wonderful.

The quality of care is excellent.

King’s is good on so many levels.”

Police called to ‘fight’ ROTHERHITHE: Police cordoned off a street outside a pub following reports of a fight on Sunday.

Officers were called to concerns of a fight outside The Brunel pub in Swan Road, Rotherhithe, at 9.17pm on December 17.

A section of the road outside the pub was cordoned off while officers investigated.

A Met Police spokesman said a man in his late 20s suffered a cut to the face during the incident.

There were no arrests and the investigation has now closed.

A POET known for his work on WW1 has been honoured with a bridge being named in his honour in Rotherhithe.

Born in Brockley, artist David Jones was best known for his epic poem In Parenthesis, published in 1937.

The poem tells the story of a foot soldier’s journey ending in the Battle of the Somme, where Jones himself was wounded during his service in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. The narrative includes a character named Tommy, described as “the man from Rotherhithe”.

Redriff Primary School in Rotherhithe dedicated a plaque to him, which includes a quote from the poem and a reproduction of one of Jone’s woodcuts of the Holy Spirit.

The school upholds a tradition of reading poetry on the pedestrian bridge over Salter Road, which was renamed The Poet’s Bridge to mark the occasion.

Jones’ maternal grandfather Eb Bradshaw, who was a sailmaker in Surrey Docks, features in Jones’ poem The Anathemata in a section called Redriff.

A short ceremony was held on

BRITISH ACTRESS Carey Mulligan surprised churchgoers with a visit to Southwark Cathedral.

The BAFTA-winning actress attended the Alzheimer’s Society Carols at Christmas concert.

She delivered a touching speech in honour of her grandmother, whom she called Nans. “The Christmas period is a special time when many of us look forward to being with family and friends. I really miss Nans at this time of year. She was the single most influential person in my life aside from my parents,” she said.

The event, which took place on Thursday December 14, attracted over 500 people and was held to raise awareness of those living with dementia.

It raised £28,000.

“When Nans was diagnosed with dementia in 2004 all our lives changed.

But I soon realised dementia is something so many people don’t understand. As a society we all have a duty to change that,” the Great Gatsby acrtress said. The evening included carol singing and readings from celebrities such as former Strictly Come Dancing

judge Arlene Phillips. TV presenter Fiona Phillips, whose life has also been drastically affected by dementia, hosted the event.

Proposals to redevelop two singlestorey blocks and a set of garages on Sceaux Gardens Estate have been given the go ahead by the council.

The Racine and Florian buildings, which currently contain onebedroom ground-floor bungalows, will be redeveloped into five and four-storey blocks respectively.

In addition, the current garage site adjacent to the estate’s Colbert House building will also be redeveloped into a six-storey residential block.

The scheme will provide 81 new council homes of varying sizes – a total net gain of 51 homes.

It will include a mix of onebedroom and wheelchair-accessible homes at ground floor, as well as bigger family homes. A number of elderly and vulnerable tenants living in the Florian and Racine buildings will need to be rehomed as part of the building process, however the council has said they will be given additional support in bidding for new homes and moving.

Councillor Mark Williams, cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, said the decision to rehome the tenants had not been “taken lightly”. “The very real impact and disruption on the residents of Florian and Racine has been carefully considered against the benefits of delivering new council homes,” he said. “All 274 one-bed ground-floor council homes within an 800m radius of the estate will be ring-fenced should they become vacant for tenants from Florian and Racine to move into.”

Resident John McGrath, who has been part of a panel working closely with the council on the project, said the majority of residents on the estate were looking forward to the scheme.

“In all honestly we as a TRA look forward to more flats and that’s the idea behind it,” he told the News.

“You will get your critics obviously but I’m 82 and I like change and those homes are desperately needed.

“Florian and Racine were built for elderly people and [the buildings] have had their day.

“It’s all been passed and that’s the great thing – now it’s just a matter of planning and going forward.”

Shopkeeper up before courts after trading standards find fake chargers PECKHAM

A PECKHAM trader was hauled before the courts after he was found with 600 fake iPhone chargers.

Trading Standards and police officers made the discovery during a visit to Nural Rahman’s Safi Electronics and Communications store in Sky Shopping Centre, in Rye Lane.

They uncovered 131 charger plugs in the shop in September 2016 – before spotting a ladder propped against a gap in the suspended ceiling, which led them to discover a further 500 within a concealed storage area.

The plugs, marked as ‘Designed by Apple’, were confirmed to be fakes by an electrical safety expert and

also infringed trademark.

They were also found to be dangerous as they failed to meet required safety standards and presented a potential risk of electric shock, or other injury, to anyone using them.

When questioned, Rahaman, aged 28, said a member of staff had bought the chargers from a site in Southall where multiple traders operated.

Since there were no receipts to accompany the sale, there was no way to identify the original source of the chargers Rahaman failed to safety check the chargers, saying he assumed they were fit to sell as they didn’t have the Apple logo on them – although they were marked as ‘Designed by Apple’.

Rahaman, of Pomeroy Street, New Cross, pleaded guilty to offences

under the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations and the Trade Marks Act, in a prosecution brought

by Southwark Council.

He was handed a twelve-month community order, with 120 hours’

unpaid work at Camberwell Green Magistrates’ Court last Tuesday, December 12.

He was also ordered to pay costs of £1,410 and his company, Safi Electronics and Communications,

was fined a further £1,500.

The council’s visit to Safi Electronics and Communications was part of a long-running trading standards campaign, designed to reduce risk by checking mobile phone accessory shops across the borough.

Councillor Barrie Hargrove, cabinet member for communities and safety, said: “Let no one be under the impression that cheap phone chargers and accessories are a bargain – quite the opposite – they could cost lives.

“We want Southwark to be a fakefree zone and we will continue to target the sale of all types of counterfeit goods in the borough.

“Traders need to realise they have a legal duty to sell safe genuine products. Let there be no doubt that the council will prosecute those who do not.”

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL’S revised plans for the regeneration of the Old Kent Road includes plans for 7,000 affordable homes, it emerged last week.

A local lettings scheme is also proposed, which would secure a percentage of social affordable homes for local residents as well as prioritising key workers such as nurses and teachers.

Masterplans on an area-by-area basis have also been included, setting out type, scale and location of new homes, businesses, schools and other amenities.

A third Bakerloo line extension at Bricklayer’s Arms has also been identified in the plan but the council has stressed that this would be a ‘preferred option’ rather than a fixed outcome.

The revised plans are an update on the original document consulted on last summer and retain some features, including the promise of 10,000 jobs and a total of 20,000 new homes.

Some businesses and residents along the Old Kent Road have been critical of the council’s consultation processes, including Mark Brearley of Kaymet London Limited.

He attended the council’s action plan launch event last week to criticise them for not communicating with businesses over their future and for allowing consultants to ‘plan in private.’

He said that while the revised plan was a step in the new direction, there was a long way to go.

He told the News: “They could be running workshops for specific areas.

For people, these planning documents are baffling and meaningless and difficult to understand.

“We are nervous and we want a proper ongoing discussion to help with a difficult process.”

Mark said that some businesses have already left the area in anticipation of eviction or hiked rents and some landlords have begun evicted businesses having sold their site to developers.

Cllr Peter John, leader of the council, said: “I was very pleased at the launch event last week when Mark agreed the current version of the Old Kent Road Area Action Plan is a big step in the right direction, and I would like to reiterate our commitment to making sure local businesses are benefitting as much from this redevelopment as anyone else in the area.”

Other Old Kent Road business owners say they have had a good experience so far. James Glancy, Director of James Glancy Designs, said: “In our opinion the council engaged very early on three years ago and have been supporting our desire to be a part of the AAP in so far as our aim is to develop the site and return with our business.

Cllr John added: “We know we need to be ambitious if we want to meet the need for more housing in London, whilst at the same time increasing employment opportunities and designing new neighbourhoods that deliver new open spaces, community facilities, improvements to air quality and a shift to sustainable travel like walking and cycling.

“The Old Kent Road Area Action Plan meets all this, effectively building a new town centre in central London.”

Dulwich pupils raise thousands for Ugandan school children DULWICH

DULWICH PUPILS have braved the cold to raise money for school children in Uganda this Christmas.

Forty pupils from James Allen’s Preparatory School and their parents ran around Dulwich Park to raise money for Ugandan charity Action for

Fundamental Change and Development. Parents and pupils alike dressed up as Father Christmas, reindeers and elves during the run on Friday, December 15.

The charity runs a free school for children living in Bwaise, the largest and poorest slum in the country’s capital, Kampala.

Pupils have collected over £2000 during the past fortnight by selling

Christmas cards, decorations and by setting up an impromptu hair salon in the school. One pupil, Leona, managed to raise £200 by selling handmade snowmen and Christmas angels.

The girls have also raised £350 for Ebola orphans by making and selling Christmas decorations.

In addition, pupils sent over 200 pencil cases filled with essential items of stationery.

ONE OF Southwark’s hopes for the Old Kent Road Area Action Plan is to secure a tube station at Bricklayers Arms as part of the Bakerloo Line extension.

If TfL agreed, the council would look at demolishing the flyover and getting rid of the roundabout, replacing it with a junction.

Currently, TfL say that that the junction is not suitable as there is insufficient land to allow for construction.

The News reported in November how Bermondsey Street Area Partnership, Tower Bridge Road Alliance, Bricklayers Arms Tenants’ and Residents’ Association and former Bermondsey MP Simon Hughes had launched a campaign to have a tube station built there.

Plan to turn civic centre into flats

PROPOSALS ARE on the table to demolish the old North Peckham Civic Centre to make way for a 40storey residential, retail and office space.

Property firm CBRE are in the early stages of screening the Old Kent Road site, which could house up to 215 new homes.

Plans show that Everlasting Arms Ministries, current Civic Centre occupants, will have a home in the new building.

CBRE’s proposals also encompass the neighbouring Livesey Place, currently vacant, which would be transformed into a 25-storey building providing 135 homes.

Some residents have expressed dismay at losing the 1966 Civic Centre building which used to be a destination for school trips thanks to its performance space and hall.

Others are concerned at the displacement of the Civic Centre’s mural ‘The History of the Old Kent Road’, painted by Adam Kossowki.

The mural is set to be relocated but critics fear that it will lose its value if moved from its current home.

The Peckham Society has said it is working on getting the Old Kent Road conservation area status to protect against large-scale development planned for the area.

Benedict O’Looney, from The Peckham Society, said: “We want some of the historic architecture of the Old Kent Road to be protected. We’d like to see a Conservation Area along the Old Kent Road. We’re really worried that there’s no conservation area there.

“If you just have new developments then it will be arid and dullsville. We accept the need for the new but it has to be mixed or people lose a sense of place.

“Nobody is averse to tall buildings but you have to save what’s there. Old Kent Road is an iconic area and it’d be terrible for it to lose its character.”

The News contacted CBRE for a comment, but received no response by the time of going to press.

Festive theme as parents hand in petition calling for secondary in old fire station

PARENTS DRESSED as festive characters delivered a petition with more than a thousand signatures for a new school to the Mayor of London.

The group descended on City Hall armed with a petition signed by 459 children and 735 adults, which called on Sadiq Khan to approve plans for a secondary school on the site of the old Southwark Fire Station.

A proposal was put forward by developer Hadston earlier this year for a secondary school and sixth form, sports hall and homes on the Southwark Bridge Road site.

However, the plans have been left hanging in the balance as they do not include any affordable housing.

After paying £54million for the site in 2015, Hadston said it was not viable to deliver affordable housing as well as the school and sports facilities.

The proposal is yet to go before Sadiq Khan – but parents have called on the mayor to make an “exception”.

Paola Wilson, who lives in the area and has a primary-aged son in Year 2, said families were “really dependent” on the school being built, as they faced having to move out of the area when their children reached secondary school age.

“There’s still a real shortage of places for boys in the area and there’s really no quality school that we could send our boys to,” the

barrister told the News.

“We need something nondenominational as well because we have a large ethnic community in this area.

“It’s a hard decision for parents who are having to make the rotten decision to move out of the area.

“The reason we organised the rally was because we wanted to draw

attention to the fact we really, really need this school and are really dependent on it and it’s disrupting the lives of children in these families having to move away from their lives and their peer groups.”

planning committee in January.

“We believe the mayor should be doing everything within his power to move it forward to open in September 2019,” she said.

“It is our hope that he will be ensuring this school is an exception because it’s not just providing a block of flats, it’s providing a really important amenity for the area.”

Haberdashers’ Aske’s Borough Academy would be a mixed-sex non-selective 900-place secondary school and 250-place sixth form if approved.

The proposals submitted to the council also include plans for 199 homes, including a mix of one, two and three bedrooms, as well as converted fire station cottages for family homes.

The residential building would be ten storeys in height at its tallest point.

A green space and a sports centre with a multi-use games area and outdoor artificial pitch for use by both the school and community are also part of the plans.

A spokesperson for the Mayor of London’s office said the plans were yet to go before Sadiq Khan for his final decision and therefore a comment could not be made at this time.

Welsh choir on song for OAPs

ELDERLY RESIDENTS at a Tower Bridge care home enjoyed some festive cheer when a Welsh women’s choir stopped by to serenade them.

Singers from Borough-based choir Cor Llunsain treated residents and families at HC-One Tower Bridge Care Home to carols in Welsh and English.

Sian Jones, Cor Llunsain’s chairwoman, said the choir had been keen to give something back to the community at Christmas time and decided to reach out to the local care home.

She said: “We all have elderly relatives in Wales. We wanted to put a

smile on all of their faces.

“It was a very emotional evening.

They were very happy to hear us and I don’t think they get to hear stuff like that often!”

“An elderly lady came up to me at the end and told me it was the first time that her husband had sung in a year. It was nice to know that we’d touched their hearts.”

Resident Patrick Hickey, 73, said: The ladies Welsh choir were very good in fact excellent. They sang a wide range of carols in perfect harmony.

“I thanked them on behalf of all the

residents for a wonderful evening and invited them to visit again which they have said they will do.”

Manager of HC-One Tower Bridge, Christen San Pedro, said: “We were delighted to welcome the Côr Llunsain choir to Tower Bridge. The residents had a fantastic evening, and we can’t thank the choir enough for volunteering their time.”

HC-One filmed their performance and will beam the recording into the fourteen residential homes they manage in Wales on Christmas morning.

Cor Llunsain sang at Twickenham during the Wales v England fixture in the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

A MEETING to decide the fate of the Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre development was halted at the eleventh hour to allow for more talks over the affordable retail offer.

Owners Delancey put forward plans to demolish and rebuild the existing Elephant and Castle shopping centre and London College of Communication campus and bring 979 homes, an additional Northern Line entrance, and a cinema and music venue to the area.

For the development to go ahead, dozens of businesses in and around the shopping centre would need to be relocated before its demolition in 2019.

The proposals have been met with significant opposition from traders, residents and councillors who have voiced concerns over the level of affordable retail and housing, among other things.

The decision on whether to rubber stamp the plans was expected to be decided at a planning committee meeting on Monday, December 18 – however the developer asked the council to postpone the decision to allow it to “continue dialogue around the affordable retail offer”.

A spokesperson for Delancey told the

News they were still committed to delivering the scheme. “We can confirm that we have asked Southwark Council to postpone the planning committee for our application for the Elephant and Castle town centre. This is in order for us to continue dialogue around the affordable retail offer,” said the spokesperson.

“The proposals will deliver enormous benefits to the surrounding communities.

New public spaces, including enhanced pedestrian routes and a new Northern Line entrance and ticket hall, will provide better access to the Network Rail Station through a new public square.

“In addition, the provision of a wide range of facilities including an expanded retail and leisure offer, cinema and grass roots cultural venue will cater for existing residents alongside 979 new homes, 35 per cent of which will be marketed at affordable rents, which are included within the scheme.

“The proposals will also deliver a cutting-edge new building for UAL's London College of Communication, including expanded space for exhibitions and public events along with 2.5 acres of new public realm. As the focal point and cornerstone of the wider £3 billion regeneration underway in Elephant and Castle, this is a hugely important scheme in the area, and we remain committed to delivering this.”

Bridges being replaced after defects found ROTHERHITHE

Two woodland crossings torn down to make way for new models by spring 2018

WORK IS underway to replace a pair of footbridges in a Rotherhithe woodland after defects were found in them.

The Albion and Alfred Salter footbridges in Russia Dock Woodland are currently being torn down to make way for new bridges of “the highest standard”.

They are just two of the five bridges in the woodland, which are all named after a primary school in the area.

The other three footbridges – Peter Hills, Redriff and St John’s – will remain open while the work, expected to be completed by spring 2018, is ongoing.

Councillor Ian Wingfield, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for environment and the public realm said: “Following the identification of defects on the Albion and Alfred Salter footbridges in Russia Dock Woodland it has been decided that the two bridges will be replaced.

“The replacement works will include demolition of the existing footbridges and installation of new bridges of the highest standard.

“While this work is ongoing there will be alternative pedestrian routes available

CHRISTMAS CAME early for Peckham residents this week as they enjoyed a festive dinner put on for them by a regeneration firm.

Over 50 residents of the Caroline Gardens Estate were catered for in the estate’s chapel building on December 18.

The menu that included turkey, mince pies and Christmas pudding, was provided by Bermondsey Community Kitchen (BCK), an initiative committed to training local young people in the catering industry. BCK students were on hand to plate food for residents and make sure no one went hungry.

This is the third year that Keepmoat Regeneration has put on a Christmas dinner for the residents.

The afternoon included a raffle draw, a Christmas quiz and a dance crew performing traditional Irish dancing.

The mayor of Southwark, Charlie Smith, attended the festivities to meet the residents and to host the Christmas raffle. He also stayed to join in the quiz.

“This is a wonderful event, it’s brought the people of Caroline Gardens together at a very special time of year. I’ve seen a real commitment from Keepmoat Regeneration and all the volunteers to ensure everyone has enjoyed themselves,” he said.

Consultation on local people’s health!

S THE year ends I have to call into question the council and former Lib Dem MP Simon Hughes on environmental grounds.

Southwark Labour Cabinet Member for Public Health, Cllr Maisie Anderson, issued a consultation last week, saying the council wanted to know how they could protect local people’s health.

The council has known for 20 years that the biggest killer and source of disabilities in the borough are pollution and inactivity diseases because local people are afraid to cycle on the lethal car-centred roads.

This week Twitter exploded with anger when Southwark tweeted a picture of its cycle-lane free “vision” for its bulldozing project on the Old Kent Road. The demolished street is to be replaced with a two-lane “motorway” lined with up to 50 storey apartment blocks, adding 45,000 (!) new residents and workers to this single road!

The three schools along the “motorway” will have nothing to enable kids to cycle safely to school and the tower-block canyon will trap polluted air.

Added to Southwark’s refusal to include cycle protection in the multimillion refurbishment of Camberwell Green, the spineless Southwark Spine “cycle-route” and their opposition to the Mayor of London’s Tower Bridge protected cycleway, you see why I question this new “consultation”.

But then you have Sir Simon Hughes.

At the last elections, Lib Dems made a big play for the votes of residents who cycle or want clean air for their kids, condemning Labour’s failure on protected cycle lanes.

So, what did Hughes do when Mayor Khan proposed a European standard protected cycle-lane? He demands the Mayor block the scheme, unless the Labour Council supports it! After betraying his constituents on NHS privatisation, nuclear power and fracking, is there anything Hughes will not sell out on?

Thankfully, as it is Christmas, we can end positively, by thanking the two local London Assembly Members, Labour’s Florence Eshalomi and Lib Dem Caroline Pidgeon, for not selling our kids out to the motoring minority and supporting the Mayor’s cycleway.

BLUE CROSS warns against buying a new pet as a surprise Christmas present.

Although the festive period can be a good time of year to welcome a new pet into your life, it is important to make sure you take the time to ensure you make a responsible choice. Whatever time of year you decide to take on a new pet, please beware of unscrupulous and unethical sellers.

We have admitted poorly young puppies and kittens in all of our animal hospitals because they had not been vaccinated or had been taken from their mother when too young. When the new pets became ill their sellers vanished and owners had not been given relevant vaccination records or microchip paperwork.

When choosing a puppy always insist on seeing the pup in the home with at least his mum, if not both parents and a grandparent. Walk away if the seller insists on meeting in a public place or delivering the puppy to you. Always ask to check paperwork for vaccinations and microchip (now compulsory for dogs by law) before agreeing a sale.

Blue Cross is always on hand to offer advice on those wishing to welcome a new pet into their home.

Research any breed and species first and don’t buy a pet based on just its looks, never get a puppy or any pet on impulse. We hope anyone looking for a new pet considers a rescue – all they want for Christmas is a loving new home.

Relieve loneliness this Christmas

CHRISTMAS IS just around the corner - a time for family and togetherness - but I’d like to ask your readers to think about

those for whom Christmas will be a very lonely time indeed.

Millions of people in the UK are disabled or care for a disabled loved one. We know that disabled people and carers are affected much more than most by social isolation and loneliness, but now new research has told us just how serious and widespread this problem is.

Over half of disabled people feel lonely and, according to GPs, loneliness can be as dangerous as having a chronic health condition.

I work for a fantastic charity called Revitalise; we run the Jubilee Lodge centre in Chigwell, which provides much-needed respite breaks for disabled people and carers, both at Christmas and all through the year. Our breaks give our guests the much-needed chance to catch up with old friends and make new ones, thus warding off the worst effects of loneliness in their lives.

But we also know that poverty is a major factor in social isolation and recent research indicates this is getting worse, not better. 3 out of 10 households with a disabled member are now living in poverty, and in response to this we have increased our hardship funding four-fold in the past five years.

The average British family spends an astonishing £821 each year on Christmas. If you donate only a tiny fraction of this money to Revitalise, you will be making a real difference to the lives of disabled people and carers everywhere. Isn’t this what Christmas is supposed to be all about?

Who is to blame for the King’s crisis?

W

E ARE entering the most challenging time of year for the NHS, just as our local hospital has reached crisis point – but the roots of the crisis at King’s go back seven years.

King’s College Hospital saw a tremendous turnaround under Labour from 1997 to 2010, with above inflation increases in funding allowing the staff to make the changes needed to improve all parts of the hospital. By 2010 the hospital was meeting all of its main targets and had a balanced budget each year.

Things began to change very soon after the election of the Liberal Democrat-Tory government in 2010, due to the combination of real terms cuts in funding each year, as well as Lib Dems and Tories cutting almost completely the capital funding which Labour had made available to invest in keeping hospital buildings and facilities up to date, including buying expensive new equipment such as brain scanners and radiotherapy equipment.

King’s College Hospital has faced financial challenges and struggled to meet its targets since 2010 for three main reasons. Firstly the repeated Lib Dem and Tory cuts have taken their toll year on year, exacerbated by foolhardy national government decisions like failing to train enough nurses, leading to the Trust paying excessive amounts for agency staff.

Secondly, King’s was forced in 2013 to take on the running of the failing Princess Royal and Orpington Hospitals, without an adequate budget to run them and with no mechanism for reviewing the costs over time.

Thirdly, and almost beyond belief, because King’s has struggled with its finances and its performance on key targets, such as Accident and Emergency and cancer waiting times, the Tories have decided to take away additional funds that would have been awarded to King’s had it not been forced into such a difficult situation by them in the first place!

Last week, the Chair of King’s College Hospital Trust, Bob Kerslake, resigned in protest at the desperate lack of funding for the Trust, which has now been placed into Special Measures.

Alongside fellow Labour MPs I am now pressing the current Tory government to urgently provide the funding needed to relieve the pressures at King’s and to enable the amazing doctors, nurses and other NHS staff at King’s to provide the excellent care we all rely on.

‘Believe in the dawn and the night will soon be over’ a little girl is told as she reads her Once Upon A Time book, so we

know that this idyllic family scene at Willoughby Hall will soon change. And change it does: Bonnie’s parents leave for warmer climes so her mother can get well; her orphan cousin Sylvia is coming to keep her company, as well as Miss Sleighcarp, the evil governess with her eye on the estate and the money - ‘My heart beats with abandoned glee’, hisses Sleighcarp on her arrival. Drop in a

double-dealing lawyer and Mrs Brisket, the proprietress of a school for orphaned girls, and you have the makings of a Victorian melodrama. And, of course, the wolves. Don’t forget the wolves.

This adaptation by Russ Tunney from Joan Aiken’s book has been torn asunder by this troupe of comic ne’er do wells as they have us laughing at children being abused with beatings and starvation and

Bumbling barnum brings wow factor

I found Marcus Brigstocke’s Barnum quite charming in his slightly fumbling and awkward ways. There were moments that had a touch of Tom Hanks to them, conveying a childlike excitement.

His voice is not as strong as his costars, particularly noticeable when

paired with Laura Pitt-Pulford’s soaring vocals as his wife, though unsurprisingly really, most people will know Brigstocke for his satirical comedy not for his musical numbers. His comedy background shines through, with a natural rapport with the crowd, horrifying audience members when approaching with a kazoo for them to play. For me it fit the character, I liked his bumbling ways. He perhaps wasn’t the spectacle drawing in the audiences, merely the facilitator, however, as this show is quite literally about him and his life, then perhaps a stronger lead would elevate the show. Speaking of elevate, I have never rooted for anyone quite as much as I was during Brigstocke’s turn on the tightrope and despite not quite making it on press night he joked his

being locked away in cupboards. There is the hilarious wig coming off and the stray goose feather falling from a hat and we don’t know if this is part of the plot or mismanaged mishaps.

But we understand that with so many characters for just five actors there will be moments when one person’s two roles cannot be on stage at the same time, and this farcical fun is as good as it can get here as they

and with the new venue allowing theatrical rigging and a higher ceiling the show seems to have quite literally found new heights. Full disclosure, I am a sucker for any sort of aerial performance and La Soirée’s acts this year did not disappoint, in particular the heart-in-mouth trapeze left my jaw dropped and me begging for it to stop and to never end all at the same time.

Lea Hinz on the hoop and LJ Marles on the tension straps perform elegant, effortless pieces and Fancy Chance twists and turns and hangs from her hair.

Literally.

Amy G is a real treat, popping in and out through the show with a cheeky mix of singing, roller skating and risqué kazoo playing. Cabaret Decadanse’s puppetry makes multiple skilled appearances and the entirely crude and rather gross styling of Daredevil Chicken and their mastication juggling has put me off of bananas for life.

LJ Marles teams up with Leon Fagbemi for one of my favourite pieces of the evening, La Serviette, a cheeky and charming double act of titillating, pristinely choreographed and nude but for their tiny towels skit. It is simple and it is fun, no frills and yet the comic timing and skill of the pair is standout.

While there are some minor criticisms in that I felt the whole thing could have been a little more oddball and subversive, La Soirée is without a doubt one of a kind on the West End stage during this festive season and there are some true dazzling moments to be witnessed.

A musical about the circus. This very brief synopsis is either going to make your heart sing or make you run for the hills. For me it is the former, and Barnum’s return to the London stage has been greatly anticipated. Centring around the eponymous Phineas Taylor Barnum, the show explores the highlights and lowlights of a life that jumped from showman to politician that would fit right into 2017, writes Rosie O’Connell...

way through in such a way that I hardly minded at all, epitomising his portrayal.

The actual narrative of the piece is at times a little thin, skimming from a burnt down museum to a fling with the ‘Swedish nightingale’(Celinde Schoenmaker) to tender bickering with his wife or shifting to politician all rather unceremoniously and without much explanation. PittPulford is lovely as Chairy Barnum, the puritanical, sensible, schoolmarm and long suffering wife of Barnum and despite their stark differences conveys a true affection for her husband. The pair have a very tender fondness for each other which comes across beautifully in the playful number ‘I like your style’.

Paul Farnsworth really has transformed the Menier into a circus tent and that paired with circus direction and choreography from Scott Maidment and Rebecca Howell respectively the whole thing comes to life. With acrobatics, knife throwing and fire eating scattered throughout the show the energy remains high, bringing a genuine wow factor that allows the rest of the cast and ensemble to shine and is perhaps reason enough to see the show.

he Wolves of Willoughby Chase begins in the forest with wolves howling and atmospheric lighting setting the scene for a night of Gothic horror.

My companion whispered, ‘Will it be scary?’ Slowly and mysteriously the cast appeared amongst the trees reciting a tale of terror before leader of the pack Adam Elliot rolled his eyes in a Larry Grayson style. ‘No’, I replied. I remember Elliot from last year’s hilarious Hound of the Baskervilles and realised this was going to be an evening of much mirth rather than marauding murderers, writes Michael Holland...

milk the situateion’s comedic content for all it’s worth. The similarity of Bryan Pilkington’s many parts meant I hardly knew who he was at any given time (except when he was Mrs Brisket), and soon forgot which one was the loquacious character: ‘That’ll put ginger in your gravy’(!).

But this mayhem that arose as the play built to a crescendo of madness became its crowning glory. Who cares about narrative when you are being entertained so well? And who cares about the wolves? I’m not even sure if they were merely forgotten in the chaos?

We all loved the train ride - I could see the audience bobbing up and down with its ‘movement'. And we all wanted to go ice skating with Bonnie and Sylvia because they made it look so much fun as they glided around.

Adam Elliot does steal the show here but let that not take anything away from Rebecca, Andrew, Bryan and Julia who all throw everything they’ve got into this fantastic production.

After eight years spot hopping around London, from Southbank’s Spiegeltent to the Roundhouse, La Soirée has found its West End home in the Aldwych Theatre, writes Rosie O’Connell...

As as fan of cabaret and having seen the show before about seven years ago in a tent, I was curious and somewhat concerned about how that intimate feel would translate to such a grand venue.

Achieve it they do however, having stripped the stalls and installing the familiar small circular stage with cabaret style seating surrounding with table seating reaching up onto what would otherwise be the stage. Be warned though, these ‘posh’ table service seats are not for the faint hearted. Expect to be straddled and or licked, at the very least. All the same I’m not sure how the overall experience would feel with the added distance of grand or dress circle tickets, this may be one where splashing that bit of extra cash really is worth it for the better ‘ringside’ seats.

n a cold, rainy afternoon the welcoming warmth of The Britannia was very much needed. Finding that it was a whisky bar as well as a pub that served Sunday roasts was an added bonus, writes Michael Holland...

As we shook the wet from our coats we were already being greeted by Julie and Nigel, who brought Nina and I up to speed on the changes they have made to bring this old style boozer into the modern age. Julie then mentioned the 76 different whiskies they have. My ears pricked up. ‘Tell me more,’ I said, and as I supped on a pint of Christmas Everyday ale I listened to tales of Whisky Flights:

selections of five different single malts grouped together by area. ‘Can I try a Tour of the Islands, flight, please?’

And so began a splendid two hours in the bosom of The Britannia.

We started proceedings with a sharing meat and cheese platter which was very nice, and I took the first sip of the five scotches distilled on Scottish islands, a smoky little number from Jura that sent a tingle down both arms and into my fingers. Nina, being the designated driver, could only sniff the whiskies and go all dreamy-eyed.

‘I’m going to return without the car one day and sample these,’ she said, trying to conceal her envy.

Just then our server turned the corner of the bar with our dinners. ‘Look at the size of them,’ I half-shouted, unable to stop myself. I wondered how she managed to carry both, but carry them she did, and also managed to slide them on to the table without a drop of gravy spilt. From that moment on there was complete silence from me as I worked my way through the lamb roast, and a running commentary from Nina: ‘This beef is delicious…

This is a proper Sunday roast… Other

places serve poor attempts at roasts…

These parsnips are perfect… These Yorkshires are definitely home made… Look how crispy the roast potatoes are (This comment accompanied with her tapping at said spuds with her knife, believing it was

giving off a sound of crispiness). And all this interspersed with small orgasmic moans of ecstasy and adoration and sips at her Romanian Pinot Noir. Meanwhile I was working my way through the malt whiskies.

My lamb dinner was equally as good. The potatoes were excellent, the meat moist and tender; it was a dinner that honestly did taste like home cooking. To my shame I could not finish it all, but it was a big plate of food.

Nina had also left a little but she explained that this was merely to leave room for Crumble and Custard. I was truly done in and could only look on and drink a small glass of Peroni to aid digestion. ‘I can’t resist a crumble,’ she whispered, telling me something I’ve known for years.

We liked The Britannia for its many options of wines, ales, food, whiskies and the nice people there. I left the pub with a warm whisky glow, while Nina said she liked the feeling of a full stomach and that she was going straight to bed when she got home.

They were words of pure contentment.

Notice of Extinguishing Rights of Interment under the Greater London Council (General Powers) Act 1975 and Notice of Proposed works under Articles 16(1), 16(2) and Schedule 3 of the Local Authorities’ Cemeteries Order 1977

Southwark Council (“the council”) adopted its cemetery strategy in 2012, which sets out the council’s commitment to local burial in the borough. As part of this strategy, the council intends to develop an area of land in Camberwell Old Cemetery to make it suitable for burial use. Southwark’s Cemetery Strategy can be viewed in its entirety online (www.southwark.gov.uk/cemeteriesplans). To improve access to the development site and increase the provision of burial spaces the council needs to create pathways and burial terraces above existing grave space. Planning permission was granted for this development in Oct 2015; details can be viewed online (http://planbuild.southwark.gov.uk:8190/online-applications). The council also made a petition to the Consistory Court because the works will be partly on consecrated land. A faculty was issued by the court on 21 February 2017 permitting the works on consecrated land.

Now that both planning & faculty permissions have been granted, interment rights that continue to exist in the area to be redeveloped will be extinguished and memorials listed below will need to be removed.

Under the GLC (General Powers) Act 1975 (“the Act”) the London Borough of Southwark has powers in accordance with sections 21 and 26 of the Act to extinguish the rights of interment in any grave which contains sufficient space for not less than one further interment, where such a right has not been exercised for 75 years from the date of the latest interment in the grave or, if there have been no interments from the date of the grant of the right of interment.

In order to comply with the Act the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that it intends to extinguish the interment rights in respect of the following private graves and notice is also hereby given that, under Articles 16(1), 16(2) and Schedule 3 of the Local Authorities’ Cemeteries Order 1977 (“the Order”), the

Where relevant, the council has also served notice upon registered owners of the rights of interment at their registered address.

The Council does not intend to extinguish the rights of interment until after 30 June 2018. All relevant existing rights of interment will be extinguished on 1 July 2018 unless (a) the council has been notified of an objection in writing by the registered owner of the right of interment or by any person who is able to satisfy the council that he/she is the owner of such right, and the objection is not withdrawn or

(b) the council has been notified of any other objection in writing and of the ground of any such objection, and the objection has not been withdrawn in which case the extinguishment of any such rights will require the consent of the relevant Secretary of State Compensation for any right of interment extinguished by these provisions shall be paid to relevant individuals referred to in the Act if brought within six months of the extinguishment of the right.

Removal of memorials in accordance with the Order

If the Council fail to be satisfied of this, the matter will be determined by the registrar of the consistory court of the diocese of Southwark

Further details of the memorials and particulars relating to the removal of the memorials, how objections can be made to the proposals, and requests for reerection of the memorials are obtainable free of charge from the address below.

Objections must be received by 30/06/2018. Memorials will not be removed before 1 July 2018.

ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 THE A2 GLA ROAD (GREAT DOVER STREET, LONDON BOROUGH OF SOUTHWARK) (TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF STOPPING) ORDER 2018

1. Transport for London hereby gives notice that it intends to make the above named Traffic Order under section 14(1), (5), (7) and 15(2) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 and is satisfied that these works will last in excess of 18 months for the purpose specified in paragraph 2. The effect of the Order is summarised in paragraph 3.

2. The purpose of the Order is enable building construction works to take place at various sites in the London Borough of Southwark.

3. The effect of the Order will be to prohibit any vehicle from except authorised vehicles from stopping at the south-western kerb-line of Great Dover Street between a point 6.5 metres south-east of the extended south-eastern building line No. 61 Great Dover Street and a point 3.5 metres north-west of the south-eastern building line of Nos. 1 to 27 Greene House, Burbage Close.

For the purposes of the Order authorised vehicles are those vehicles serving construction sites authorised by Transport for London.

The Order will be effective at certain times from 12.01 on the 13th January 2018 until the works have been completed. The prohibition will apply only during such times and to such extent as shall from time to time be indicated by traffic signs.

4. The prohibitions will not apply in respect of: (1) any vehicle being used for the purposes of those works or for fire brigade, ambulance or police purposes; (2) anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or a person authorised by Transport for London.

The London Borough of Southwark (Weight Restriction) (Camberwell Grove Bridge) Traffic Order 2018 1. Southwark Council hereby GIVES NOTICE that it proposes to make the above order under sections 6 and 124 of and Part IV of Schedule 9 to the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, as amended.

The general effect of the order would be to introduce a 3 tonne weight restriction for all vehicles throughout the entire length of Camberwell Grove Bridge, on CAMBERWELL ROAD from its junction with the south eastern kerb line of McNeil Road south-eastwards for a distance of 55 metres. Any vehicles having a maximum gross weight of 3 tonnes or more would be prohibited from entering in or proceeding in this section of highway at all times. There are no exceptions for emergency services vehicles as this is a structural weight restriction. An alternative route for heavy vehicles is available via Grove Hill Road, Champion Park, Denmark Hill and Peckham Road, and vice versa.

Southwark Council is now consulting on a revised neighbourhood area boundary on behalf of the Old Bermondsey Village Neighbourhood Forum. In 2014 the council designated an area to which any neighbourhood planning policies included in a Bermondsey neighbourhood plan would apply. The Old Bermondsey Village Neighbourhood Forum was designated in 2015 The Forum has submitted an application for the extension of their neighbourhood area in late 2017.

ERMONDSEY’S VERY own ‘Big Cheese’ Ted Cheeseman says he is keen to start 2018 with a British title shot.

The 22-year-old English superwelterweight champion signed off his 2017 campaign with a dominating eighthround 80-72 points win over a very gutsy Tony Dixon, 25, who is the Welsh title holder.

The bout took place last Wednesday evening at a sold-out York Hall, Bethnal Green on the undercard of Katie Taylor and Jessica McCaskill’s WBA world women's lightweight title on the Matchroom Boxing-promoted bill.

Cheeseman, who extended his impressive unbeaten record to 12-0, demonstrated exceptional movement and shot selection throughout the contest despite having to cope with Dixon’s sheer resilience.

“He was a very game kid and a great fight for me,” former Fisher ABC

representative Cheeseman said.

“He’s ten and one, so on paper he’s come here to win. He’s the current Welsh champion and I’m the current English champion so it was great fight for me. It was exactly what I needed which was a good, tough eight rounds.

“I dominated every round, I kept having him hurt but he just seemed to stick in there. It’s exactly what I needed before I push on for the big fights – hopefully for the British title. I feel I’m ready now, I performed like I’m ready now, I showed everyone I can go in trenches.”

He may get his New Year wish if the governing BBBofC agree to move his proposed final eliminator with Liverpool’s JJ Metcalf to full title status.

'Kid Shamrock' Metcalf, 29, who is unbeaten in seventeen contests and is promoted by Frank Warren, earned his credentials with a sixth-round stoppage of Leeds man Damon Jones back in October.

STANSFLED WENT into this game confident of improving their league position, a week after their biggest win of the season at Forest Hill Park.

Playing up a slope in the first half, all the early pressure was on the Erith & Belvedere goal and in the tenth minute Billy Jolley had a long-range effort tipped over by the Erith goalkeeper. Jake Williams was causing the Erith defence all sorts of problems with his pace and trickery, and it was from one of his runs that Stansfeld opened the scoring. MATTHEW RAMSAMY fired a hat-trick as Fisher thumped Gravesham Borough to move up to third in the SCEFL First Division table.

IF MIDDLESBROUGH made one mistake on Saturday, it was thinking they could go toe-to-toe in a battle with Millwall.

Martin Braithwaite ploughed into Mahlon Romeo and George Saville was left in a heap after a late tackle.

Referee Oliver Langford turned a flicker into a flame as he gave a throwin to the visitors that the home fans thought was theirs and then booked Lee Gregory and Romeo within two minutes around the half hour.

Fans charged down the steps of the Barry Kitchener stand to angrily shake fists at Langford as noise exploded around the ground. Millwall players smiled. Welcome to this little part of south London.

These are the days to be down at The Den on a Saturday afternoon in winter, a rollicking, rip-roaring game of football when the Lions prod and niggle and provoke and get the contest played on their terms.

This was a reminder about the oldschool values of working-class football.

Players absolutely committed to the cause, aware they are the representation on the pitch of those watching them from the stands. It wasn’t just rhetoric when Millwall boss Neil Harris said again and again after taking the job that he would reconnect supporters with their players. Ian Holloway will see how it has been done when QPR visit on December 29.

Harris’ will is enforced between the white lines by those players. And looking at where they have come from

indicates what a job Harris has done in two-and-a-half years. Eight of those that started against Boro at the weekend weren’t wanted elsewhere. Of the others, Aiden O’Brien came through the youth system, James Meredith from Bradford after a career in the lower leagues, and Lee Gregory from Halifax.

They play like no one dare take this chance away from them, the chance to become an established Championship club and, who knows, the chance to maybe, one day, launch a bid for the Premier League. If that seems fanciful then consider where they were at Christmas two years ago. After three successive defeats they were eleventh in League One. If they can consolidate this season, then have success again next summer in the transfer market, such values and stability will go a long way in this league.

Every Millwall player knows their job, and against teams like Middlesbrough, expensively assembled but with boss Garry Monk still searching for the right

combinations, that closes and overcomes the gap on paper that suggests what should be the expected outcome in contests like this. Teams keep coming to The Den and then afterwards say they knew what to expect, but do they really?

Jed Wallace knew the moment Millwall were going to win this fixture.

“I thought the game turned into a bit of a brawl first half, didn’t it, the crowd got right up for it and that’s when I saw a few of the boys in blue shirts smiling, they knew that this was playing right into our hands,” Wallace said.

“We’re not under any illusion that we’re the best team in the division passing the ball, but if anyone wants a tear-up like happened at one point in the first half then we’re happy to do that. We came out on top.”

For all the brawl, Millwall’s first goal was beautifully crafted. George Saville flicked a volley to Gregory, who chested the ball down and invited Ryan Tunnicliffe to charge forward from midfield. Tunnicliffe, who has been so

quietly effective since stepping in for Shaun Williams, providing so much protection for the defence, showed his ability on the ball by slipping Wallace through. Millwall have missed so many of these chances this season, but Wallace kept his composure to shoot low under Darren Randolph and skip and leap in celebration towards the Barry Kitchener stand, those supporters’ earlier anger now turned to pure joy.

Millwall’s second goal could not have more aptly demonstrated what is so good about this side. Gregory, as he had done in the previous home game against Sheffield United, won possession high up the pitch before finding Steve Morison. Amid all the thunder, the Lions skipper calmly rolled the ball into the area where Saville was making one of those typical bursts. The chance seemed to be gone as the midfielder was crowded out, but he stubbornly kept his foot in to bundle forward and then prod past Randolph.

The game was almost gone from Middlesbrough with just over 20 minutes left, before Jordan Archer let a long-range effort from Stewart Downing slip in. But it was to Archer’s credit he didn’t let the error affect him, and in the closing moments he plucked a number of crosses safely into his grasp as Middlesbrough piled forward.

Middlesbrough had been warned, but they joined Leeds, Norwich, Birmingham, Reading and Sheffield United on this season’s Den scrap heap.

Millwall pair weren’t wanted at the current table toppers, but south London move is proving the making of them

GEORGE Saville and Jed Wallace haven’t exactly pencilled in December 26 in their diaries as a day of reckoning – they’ve moved on from Wolves and will treat it the same as any other game.

The Lions duo come face to face with some of their former team-mates on Boxing Day, but don’t feel any ill will towards the club that let them leave in the summer.

They certainly haven’t shown any signs of lingering disappointment that they could have been challenging for a Championship title this season rather than battling it out in the lower regions of the league table.

Saville and Wallace are the Lions’ two top scorers in the league, with seven and four goals, respectively, following their match-winning contributions against Middlesbrough last weekend.

Their time at Wolves was marked by uncertainty and affected by injury.

Saville was initially a first-team regular and frequent scorer when he went back to the Midlands club after his spell on loan with Millwall in 2015-16.

But Kenny Jackett left the following summer, and Saville was often used at left-back as Walter Zenaga and then Paul Lambert attempted to turn Wolves into challengers for promotion to the Premier League.

Wallace could never find consistency, as injuries hindered his chances of putting a run of consecutive starts together.

Saville was asked recently if he had a point to prove to his former employers.

“I don’t look at it like that,” he responded. “I was there before but that’s that now. They are doing fantastically well and I’m very happy for the boys that I still know there. I have friends there and hopefully they can go on and get promoted.

“There is no point for me to prove to Wolves. I’m at Millwall now and it’s just another game. Hopefully over the Christmas period we can pick up wins and continue our good form.

JED WALLACE believes Millwall are suited to not having possession – which sets up an intriguing clash against a flexible and adaptable Derby County this weekend.

The Lions had less than 40 per cent possession last weekend in their 2-1 win over Middlesbrough.

Derby had even less as they defeated Aston Villa 2-0 last Saturday, and in the game before that they hammered Barnsley 3-0 despite seeing less of the ball than their opponents.

However, they also showed in a 1-0 win over Burton at the start of the month that they could dominatejkjk on the ball, as they registered over 60 per cent possession.

Haves and have-nots possession key to Pride outcome

Millwall will not be deterred if they see little of the ball at Pride Park this weekend.

“We’re geared to not have the football,” Wallace said. “You see so many of these top teams like Man City where they have possession all the time.

Saville wonders why late December is so packed with fixtures.

“It would probably be nice to have a week off and spend time with your family,” Saville said. “But it’s the opposite and double the intensity. I would take a winter break because of how hard our schedule is anyway, and then to get that on top makes it really hard.”

Millwall must figure out a way to stop Derby turning dominance on the ball into chances, with the Rams having won seven of their eleven league games at home this season.

Wallace said: “The problem is how do you stop them? We went to Molineux [the 1-0 defeat to Wolves] and knew they would have the ball and it’s how you stop them. Stopping people when they play to their strengths is very difficult.”

Only Wolves have a better defensive record on the road in this campaign than Millwall, but it’s at the other end of the pitch where improvement is needed if they are to finally get that first away win.

Only Burton and Birmingham have scored fewer goals away from home.

Millwall will be again without Fred Onyedinma and Shane Fergsuon, while Byron Webster is back jogging in the gym as he continues his recovery from a cruciate ligament injury.

‘Teams don’t give us credit – but we’ll keep knocking them over’

STEVE MORISON has given an insight into Millwall’s on-pitch battles – stressing he is in “complete control” when referees and opponents mistakenly think he’s losing it.

After last Saturday’s 2-1 win over Middlesbrough, Jed Wallace revealed he saw his team-mates smiling as the contest became fractious, before the winger scored the opener and George Saville quickly added a second.

Referee Oliver Langford annoyed the home players and fans with a number of disputed decisions, and Morison explained how the side used that to their advantage.

“I started off earlier [talking to Langford]. They got a throw-in in the corner and the referee and lino seemed to think it was okay for their geezer to take it fifteen yards further up,” Morison recalled. “Then it happened again and I was just trying to get my point across to the ref that we’ve got the ball in the corner, we want to keep them in the corner, we don’t want them getting fifteen yards further up. Then we got a throw-in on the far side and he made us take it from the exact position it was. I was, like, ‘this doesn’t make sense’. I was on and on at him and he got the hump.

“Their centre-halves were having a moan-up because I caught, I think, [Daniel] Ayala in the face. Gregs [Lee Gregory] had a couple of fouls against him so we were on at [Langford] about that, and then everyone else was on at him. Tunni [Ryan Tunicliffe] made a tackle in the corner and that got everyone up.

“It’s funny, the ref and their players are making comments like, ‘don’t worry, he’s too busy moaning at me, he’s not worried about you, you should

be happy’. What they don’t realise is I’m in complete control of what I’m doing. I know exactly what I’m doing, everyone on my team knows exactly what I’m doing. We’re doing it all with smiles on our faces, the only people losing control was them and the referee. He lost it a little bit, we used it to our advantage and had a good fifteen minutes.”

Morison also feels the contribution of The Den crowd in games against supposedly superior opponents can make a decisive difference.

at the time, it’s more when you look at it back you see it was everyone coming together and that’s what you need,” Morison said. “The most frustrating thing at home is when we’re not together, when the players and fans are apart. It becomes really difficult.

“But when they’re on our side, we’re making a racket on the pitch, they’re making a racket in the stands – it just gives everyone a lift. We got the two goals within ten minutes and it worked out well. I think if we hadn’t given the goal away it would have been a

comfortable afternoon.”

After last Saturday’s encounter, Boro boss Garry Monk was slightly dismissive of Millwall, arguing their approach should be relatively easy to counter.

Morison is happy for the bigger sides to continue to underestimate the Lions.

“At the end of the day, Middlesbrough should be coming to Millwall and winning,” Morison said.

“You look at their team, the amount they have spent, the amount they are paying those players. One of their players is probably getting paid as

boost off making it difficult for other teams.

“From the time I came into the club the manager made it clear what it means to play for Millwall, what he wants his players to be like. We try to play for him and play for the club and do our best to put in good performances.

“As soon as you drive into The Den and under that bridge, you know you’re in for a good day’s work. Other teams come in knowing it’s going to be a hard place to play. The gaffer has done very well putting this team together. We really feel like a team, we’ve bonded really well and have had some great times on and off the pitch.

“I wanted to come here and get good Championship experience.

This was a great club to come to, and being here last year I knew what it was all about. The gaffer did really well in the summer with his signings, we’ve all gelled

properly. I’m enjoying playing all the time and getting good results.”

Middlesbrough were the sixth team to fall to a league defeat in south Bermondsey this campaign, but Cooper felt Millwall didn’t get enough get enough credit from Boro boss Garry Monk when he spoke after the game.

“I read them saying how they can’t be conceding silly goals, but our two goals were created really well,” Cooper said. “And we should have had plenty more from their mistakes. Our two goals we created with great bits of play, Tunners [Ryan Tunnicliffe] and Jed [Wallace] combining for the first goal.

“A lot of our game is based around our shape and how we defend, and we have been really good at stopping goals, which has helped us gain points. We build from that and try to counter-attack well. We do use the ball to the best of our ability and we have our

much as half of our team put together.

“They play a lot more expansive football than we do, play a lot better football, to the eye. But we’re effective at what we do, we work very hard at it. We know what we’re going to do, other teams know what we’re going to do. The question is: can they stop it?

At times, yes. Do they want to stop it?

At times, yes. But when you come to Millwall and it all clicks like it did last weekend then it’s very hard to stop.

“Even when we weren’t winning games in November we weren’t doing anything different to what we’re doing now, except this month we’ve put the ball in the net a couple of times. Some teams manage to stop us, some teams don’t. At the minute it seems to be the teams at the top of the league that play the nicer football, have the nicer football players, that can’t seem to stop it.

“You might see a few of those teams when they come to us in the second half of the season changing the way they set up and changing their personnel, picking players that can show us a bit more respect. I’m happy that they can keep not giving us the credit we think we deserve, and we’ll keep knocking them over.”

Morison has yet to score this season, but he was involved in creating another goal when he set up Saville’s seventh of the season.

“I do get the odd chance but it seems to be more this year I’m getting assists,” Morison added. “I think the one last weekend was my seventh of the season.

“I’d like to have scored a couple of goals, I have had two goals that have been crossed off for whatever reason.

I’m probably playing a bit more of a defensive role this season. I love to score goals and want to score goals, don’t get me wrong, but mainly I just want us to win games of football. If I’m a big part of us winning games, then I’m happy to keep doing that.”

Defender praises Harris for creating formidable side

JAKE COOPER has seen opponents “crumble” at The Den this season – and says boss Neil Harris deserves credit for assembling a group of players who know what it means to represent the club.

Cooper, 22, arrived from Reading in the summer after a loan spell last season, and has nailed down a firstteam place, forming a formidable partnership in the centre of defence with Shaun Hutchinson.

And he feels Lions fans can identify with their players, something which has made The Den a formidable place to visit for teams this season.

“We really feel at home there, with the crowd and the atmosphere they create,” Cooper said. “You can tell that other teams don’t enjoy it, their players start to crumble and we get a sense of that. We get a

strengths as a team. So why not play to those strengths?

“We were disappointed not to get a clean sheet. We enjoy playing against top strikers, we’ve had it against Aston Villa and Sheffield United and Saturday was just another one of those occasions.

“From the start we felt in control, they had a bit of possession but we felt we were easing into the game, perhaps a bit slower than we normally do at The Den. But it’s no harm to do that sometimes, especially against the top teams, when you need to assess who you’re playing against. It took a couple of tackles and the ref lost his way a little bit, if you can say that, and we capitalised on it.

“When big teams come to The Den we put in big performances.

We really enjoy playing there and we’ve just got to turn around our away form and get more results on the road. We’ll be looking to do that this Saturday at Derby.”

MILLWALL ARE still “a few transfer windows” away from realising the vision of exactly the side they want, according to Lions assistant boss Dave Livermore.

Livermore and manager Neil Harris took over on a permanent basis in April 2015, and have completely transformed the playing squad and the style of football.

In just over two-and-a-half years in full charge the duo have led Millwall to

two play-off finals, the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, promotion, and they are currently consolidating their position in the Championship.

Nine of the players that started in the 2-1 win over Middlesbrough last Saturday were signed by Harris, and Livermore is thankful that they were given the time to rebuild the club.

“One hundred per cent, yeah, that’s a plus in our football club that we’ve got a chairman that gives managers time,” Livermore said. “That’s important if you’re going to build anything, it’s very difficult to do over the short term.

“We’re into two-and-half-plus years now, and we’re just starting to see more, week-in, week-out, what we consider

to be a Millwall team.

“It will probably take a few more transfer windows to get it to exactly where we want it. That’s the good thing, we’re always trying to improve and get better. I think in terms of the performances this season we can be pretty pleased with how we’ve done so far.

“You have spells when you have time to look back and consider how far we’ve come. We’re pleased where the club is now compared to where it was.

We’d like to think there is a team now that reflects our support and hopefully the fans are happy with what they have seen.

Livermore and Harris have been in charge for 153 competitive games, and the assistant boss believes they have a good combination of qualities.

“We balance off, you get a sense of what the mood is like in the camp,” Livermore said. “If he’s had to dig someone out for some reason – they probably get the harsher words from the gaffer – then maybe it might be my job to kind of try and start that process of building them back up again.

“You get a feel for what’s required.

I’ve known Neil for a long time and worked with him for a long time. I think our qualities are very different but they complement each other very well.”

Morison triggered a year’s extension in his contract when he made his 20th league appearance of the season against Aston Villa recently.

Morison, 34, has missed just one Championship game this campaign, after playing 107 times in all competitions the previous two seasons.

The Lions’ on-field skipper joked that his current contract mentioned the average retirement age of a football is 35, and Millwall under Neil Harris have a policy of offering only one-year contracts to players aged 30 or over.

And he revealed he was asked by someone at the training ground this week how long he thought he could play.

Morison responded: “I said I don’t know what you’re supposed to feel, are you supposed to wake up one day and just think, ‘I don’t want to do this anymore’?

“But like everyone you have good days and bad days, good weeks and bad weeks. I don’t know, I’ve always said if I’m still contributing I want to be involved.

“I feel great, I’m playing the games, I’m not missing any training sessions.

I’m doing what’s asked of me when I’m asked by the manager. While I’m playing and we’re winning games then people don’t need to ask too many questions.

“There’s a line at the bottom of the contract, where it says ‘average retirement age is 35’. It was something I noticed when we were doing the contract and I thought it was quite funny. I was wondering if it was in everyone’s, and apparently it is.”

Morison’s current deal does not contain another appearance clause.

“Once you get over that age [35] you have to see how you’re playing and how your body is,” Morison said. “If you’re scoring goals and playing well it’s a no-brainer, you get a contract sorted out.

“But it’s not something I need to overly worry about right now. We just need to worry about continuing our good form and cementing our place in the Championship.”
