STAND UP GUY

Remember remember the fifth of November with our favourite bonfire events south of the river. Regularly hosting more than 80,000 people, Blackheath Fireworks is one of the largest bonfire nights, and it’s free! A day early on November 4, the funfair opens at noon, the bar opens at 5pm, and fireworks begin at 8pm.

CASTLE IN THE SKY It’s Guy Fawkes fit for a king at Severndroog Castle, with 360 degree views of London, a DJ playing mellow tunes, freshly made street food, and cocktails by chef Christopher Hackett. Tickets: £11.50 + booking fee.

BEXLEY BANGERS Welling Round Table is back again, hosting the Annual Family Fireworks Spectacular in Bexley on Saturday 4 November. The family evening, set in the beautiful settings of historic Danson Park, features a 25 minute firework display choreographed to music and set over the lake. There will also be a children’s fun fair, stalls and plenty of food and refreshments available. No general onsite parking.

Elsewhere in south London The Southwark Park Fireworks display is one of the biggest free events with 30,000 people attending every year.

Terence Wilton has been teaching drama at the school for the last 10 years along with both his wife and daughter.

The esteemed thespian - who’s performed with the likes of Derek Jacobi and Felicity Kendall– has recently joined the cast of the West End thriller, The Woman in Black and I popped backstage to find out a bit more about his work and career.

Originally from Brighton, Terence Wilton has lived in South East London for over 15 years. He trained at Manchester University and became well known in the theatrical committee during the 1960s for some notable performances at the Royal Exchange under the guidance of director, mentor and pioneer of theatre in the round, Stephen Joseph.

He became a household name in 1969 after appearing in an epic film with an all-star cast, “I did a film called Ann of the Thousand Days with Richard Burton.”

Terence explained, “He was wonderful. There were a lot of old actors who used to applaud him on the set and he really was like Henry VIII.” Terence has enjoyed an esteemed and varied career, which has also comprised of hundreds of television appearances, including a cameo role in Doctor Who alongside Jon Pertwee in 1974.

But it’s for his Shakespearean accomplishments that he is perhaps most celebrated “I performed with Sir Ian McKellen and we went around the world doing Richard II and Edward II, which were very famous productions and made his name.

I had very good parts in those and I used to do his matinees on Edward II and that started a whole classical career.”

And it’s a career that has spanned almost 50 years and enabled Terence to bring the Bard’s work to all the corners of the globe, “I’ve done loads of Shakespeare; I’ve performed in front of the Sphinx, I played the Great Hall of the People in Beijing recently; Fort Canning Park in Singapore and about 22 different states of the US.” But it’s in South East London where Terence finds solace – often while working on his well-stocked allotment - and he is passionate about bringing theatre to the young people in the area.

The theatrical troika offers LAMDA courses and students can gain bronze, silver and gold medals for their achievements, “It’s time honoured and you get UCAS points” Terence tells me.

And the Wilton family is a huge supporter of the theatrical establishments in Greenwich too, “My daughter has danced on the stage at the Bob Hope Theatre in Eltham and she does lots of things in Blackheath at the Conservatory, where there’s a terrific local policy of putting on Benjamin Britten operas and lovely adventures, which use the whole community as well as professional players.”

Terence has recently been stretching his own acting chops once again however in the classic stage horror The Woman in Black at the Fortune Theatre. The play - based on the gothic novel by Susan Hill - has been terrifying audiences in the West End for over 28 years and has been seen by over 7 million people.

“It’s an extraordinary story” Terence enthuses and then drops his voice to deliver a spooky preface of the infamous two hander, “I play this traumatized geezer, who comes in with this terrible secret and I use a young actor to help me to tell the story. We start on this adventure of trying to tell the secret and as we get closer and closer to the heart of this, we drag the audience across the terrible marshes into the ghost story.”

The spooky memory play relies on the psychology of the audience and is still just as fearprovoking today as it was when it was first staged in the bar at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough back in 1987.

“The audience does most of the work, that and the soundtrack.

You can hear a pin drop and then slowly gasps and shrieks. It’s glorious to do.”

“It’s terribly simple really; there’s nothing on the stage.” Terence impassions “It works by old Victorian tricks, real old bits of theatre that just absolutely work and the audience terrify themselves as much as anything else.”

Happy go lucky Nathan S

tar of Mock the Week, a winner of the Student Comedy Award, and writer of some Rastamouse episodes, Nathan Caton has one clear goal in mind with his new touring show.

“Happiness is a kind of theme in it, but mainly it’s about whether the grass is always greener on the other side,” he says about The Pursuit of Happiness. “We’re trying to find happiness, but is that going to make us happy? The big thing in my life which has made me write this show is that I’ve moved out of my mum’s house for the first time. For years I used to do jokes about living at home and how I was desperate to have my newfound freedom, but now I’ve got it, I’m like, ‘oh, I’m not as happy as I thought I’d be’. I thought it would be all glam with PlayStation parties but it’s not, it’s being by myself paying my council tax and turning lights off so I’m not wasting energy.”

While there’s a strong personal aspect to the show, Nathan will also be reflecting on the wider world and the ultimate ‘grass is greener’ moment in recent British politics: the referendum vote which resulted in the UK leaving the European Union. “Is Brexit going to make us happy and if we could go back in time, would we still vote to leave the EU? And for me, would I have decided to stay living at home? We’re always looking for the better thing but it doesn’t always turn out that way.”

When Nathan started out in stand-up, he focussed on family stories, of which he had plenty. “My family are funny without trying to be funny, naturally quite eccentric and quite loud. My gran is a forceful character, a whirlwind, but then you’ve got my little brother: to call him laidback would be an overexaggeration. There’s no urgency with him and he lapses into doing dopy things. Those guys are doing material without realising it.”

But after getting his initial break on Mock the Week, he has become more confident in tackling the issues of the day and is perfectly content with being viewed as a topical comedian. “I

For years I used to do jokes about living at home and how I was desperate to have my newfound freedom, but now I’ve got it, I’m like, ‘oh, I’m not as happy as I thought I’d be’. enjoy sitting down to watch the news and coming up with something that’s fresh and current. If I do a topical joke in a gig, the audience will think, ‘wow, that only happened yesterday!’ With Brexit or Trump, there is so much stuff that you have to find a unique way to put it across, and I give my opinion differently from everyone else. I don’t force my opinion down an audience’s throat, I give my impartial view. I always try to counter things and not sound too preachy when it comes to Brexit or Trump.”

Describing himself as a ‘goody twoshoes boffin’ when he was at school, Nathan’s focus on working hard has

kept him in good stead for a career in writing and performing comedy.

As well as talent, he firmly believes you need to have discipline and determination to improve your craft.

But being a workaholic can lead to tricky social situations. “I’m not good to be on holiday with,” he insists. “Last year I went on a summer holiday for maybe the first time since I was 18, and I didn’t know what to do. I was on the beach having pizza and said “is this what normal people do?” I feel guilty that if I’m not doing something productive then I’m just wasting my time. I thought about starting a gig in the hotel reception area.”

This desire to perform was certainly there in the young Nathan Caton but had to be slowly teased out. “I always wanted to try something in the performing arts, but at the same time I had to get an education; I wanted to get a degree so I’d have something to fall back on. The first bit of stand-up I did was a talent show at my church when I was 14. Someone there dared me to do stand-up as I had been mucking about doing some jokes. At that point, I had watched old stuff of Eddie Murphy (even though I shouldn’t have) and thought ‘fine, I’ll do some jokes’. I wrote a fourminute set based on some people at the church. It went well though I’m not sure if they felt sorry for me or if they felt they had to laugh because I was a kid, but they did laugh and I remember thinking, ‘yeah, I could do this again’. But I didn’t tell jokes on stage again until I was about 19 as I had to focus on the studies. My family would have killed me if I’d dropped my education to tell jokes for a living.”

Happily Nathan found a way to combine them both, studying architecture while winning the Student Comedy Award in 2005. Later he

would appear at six Edinburgh Fringes with solo shows such as Straight Outta Middlesex and Get Rich Or Die Cryin’, and have his own Radio 4 comedy (Can’t Tell Nathan Caton Nothing) all of which are wrapped around perhaps the most curious moment of his career to date: being a writer on CBeebies show, Rastamouse.

“When I wrote my first episode, I had no idea that it would be the monster that it was. When I first started doing stand-up I never thought that one day I was going to write a kids TV show about a mouse from the West Indies.

It was surreal but a lot of fun.” As Nathan Caton proves in the Pursuit Of Happiness, the grass might not necessarily be greener on the other side, but wonderfully strange things can be waiting around the corner for those with determination and talent.

When an opulent train journey through Europe turns deadly, legendary detective Hercule Poirot is forced to solve the case and find the killer.

With a mysterious motive, everyone on the train is a suspect, but Poirot must solve the crime in a race against time to catch the killer before they can make their escape.

Based on the classic novel – which was first published in 1934 – Murder On the Orient Express is one of Agatha Christie’s most famous stories. It was previously made into a film in 1974 and starred Albert Finney as Hecule Poirot alongside Sean Connery, Lauren Bacall, Anthony Perkins, John Gielgud, Vanessa Redgrave and Ingrid Bergman, who won an Academy Award for her role as Greta Ohlsson.

The Shard’s annual festive light show returns on Monday 4 December as the top 20 storeys of the building illuminate the London skyline for a fifth year. ope is something which was made in many river and seaside towns and Greenwich was no exception to this.

Rope was made in Charlton until 1985 and so there are still many people around who worked at the Bridon factory in Anchor and Hope Lane. But that is another story and rope was made in our area long before that.

Rope factories are called “rope walks” and if you look at historic maps you will see several long thin works in east, and south east, London. If you want to see rope made today by traditional methods go to Historic Dockyard at Chatham where the dockyard rope walk is still in production. The building is so long that you can hardly see one end of it from the other and a machine trundles up and down the length of it and twists together long strands of material to make the rope.

Before machines like this were invented the ropemakers were on foot – they walked backwards down the length of the ‘walk’ with something like 40 lbs of fibre twisted round their waists. As they went they twisted these fibres with the fingers of their left hands to make the rope - and in every working day they would cover more than 20 miles.

Rope Yard Rails was the name of a street in Woolwich which ran across the area which now seems to be called Maribor Park – that’s near the roundabout on the corner of Warren Lane and Beresford Street. By 1900 this was a terrible slum but its name tells us that it had been part of the great Woolwich Ropeyard. This had been set up under Elizabeth I, in the 1570 to supply rope to naval warships. It was the first naval ropeyard in the country – and so was an early state industry undertaken through a contractor. The rope walk itself was a covered building running the length of what is now Beresford Street. By the 17th century it had a grand entrance in the High Street and adjacent to it were some very nice houses for the master ropemaker and his clerk.

In Greenwich there were also probably several rope works in the 18th century but they would have been very much smaller than Woolwich and all privately owned and managed. The one we know most about was at what is now called Enderby Wharf. In the 17th century this had been a government explosives establishment which had

closed in 1770. In around 1800 a rope walk was built here. In the official records a John Hounson is listed here and my guess is that this is the same John Hounson who had been the Clerk at the rope walk in Woolwich since 1780 - and perhaps he had decide to set up his own business.

He was only there for a short time and after that other people were running the works, By 1808 a James Littlewood was there with a ‘rope house, rope walk, houses and wharf’.

Littlewood later described how he had borrowed £40 from friends in order to take the rope walk on but he was bankrupt by 1817.. He explained that he had done badly because he had been ‘very unfortunate’ in business and that “a conspiracy had been formed to take it out of his hands". He had handed the ropewalk over to " a person named Young” and this was an arrangement by which he ‘received nothing for it’ but was promised the job of foreman with a salary of £250 a year. That didn’t last long and he was sacked

by Mr. Young for stealing hemp although he denied that he had done this. He then began a court case against Mr. Young to get the rope walk back. The case was tried at Maidstone, but Littlewood was defeated because there was no written agreement. While the case was being heard in Maidstone he was actually a prisoner in Horsemonger Lane Jail in Southwark for operating an illicit still to make liquor, and for selling this liquor in the prison.

rope walk Littlewood went to Kentish Town, and changed his name to Smith. In Kentish Town he set up an illegal still which was eventually discovered by the Excise and as Mr. Smith he was fined 30 shillings in the Magistrates Court. In 1824 Robert Binns, landlord of the Seven Stars Pub in Whitechapel, was investigated by the Excise for buying spirits which had been made without a permit and supplied to him in cans or bladders by a Mr. Cross.

The Excise Officers made further enquiries and discovered Mr. Cross who was running an illegal still in Bethnal Green and had others at Leytonstone, and Camberwell.

Littlewood eventually admitted, in court, that he was both Mr Smith and Mr Cross and ‘within the past three or four months had manufactured three or four hundred gallons of spirits’.

The Foreman of the Jury is reported as saying “we are unanimous we cannot believe such a wretch on his oath.” and there was no verdict.

Littlewood was actually a prisoner in the Fleet Gaol while the trial was going on and he told the Court that this was ‘because of debts contracted at the Greenwich ropeworks’.

Mr.Young, who is otherwise unknown, continued to manage the rope works until it was taken over by the Enderby Brothers.

In 1830, the rope works was purchased by the Enderby Brothers, Charles, George and Henry. Over the next few years they developed the site by adding a sail making works and a hemp factory to the already

existing rope-walk. Members of the Enderby family been living in the Greenwich and Blackheath area for some years but in the 18th century the family had been tanners, oil merchants and paint manufacturers in Southwark. By the end of that century Samuel Enderby was investing in the Southern Whale Fishery plus the transport of convicts to Australia.

They maintained a considerable fleet which needed the rope and canvas manufactured at the Greenwich works. The Enderbys invested in the works by adding a boiler house and mechanised the quarter of a mile long covered ‘rope walk’ but the site was devastated by a terrible fire in 1845.

Ever since the site has been known as Enderby Wharf.

In the 1850s the site was taken over by the makers of the early telegraph cables whose successors remain there today and the site has become famous as the place which ‘cabled up the world’ in the late 19th and early 20th century. The ropewalk itself was integral to the development of the cables – for example in the mid1830s they were involved in looking at ways in which rubber could be used in ropes The rope walk remained on site and can still be seen marked on maps of the telegraph cable works in the 20th century. It length could still be made out from the Greenwich riverside path until very recently and it is only in the last three or four years that Barratt’s high rise developments have obliterated it.

There is little else left of the rope

making industry in Greenwich – although recent research on the Bridon Ropes Charlton site has identified “significant” remains, and I understand that some of this awaits publication. I also understand that the Bridon football team is still with us. There is also a small decorative motif on new brick walls in Woolwich Road at the junction with Anchor and Hope Lane. Someone has tried there to reference and commemorate this once important local industry.

An alternative fireworks display for younger children and those sensitive to light and noise is being held at Woolwich’s Under1Roof.

The event is a virtual display of silent fireworks over the roof tops of mini-London on a big screen.

The 15 minute display, which runs from when it gets dark, at around 4pm on Saturday, November 4, and will be accompanied by party songs, popcorn, candyfloss, and food available to buy.

A ballet for young people will take a humorous look at Lear’s famous The Owl and The Pussycat.

romley’s magnificent B Churchill Theatre has created a brand new

restaurant as part of major redevelopments.

The Churchill Bar and Kitchen is open to the general public but caters especially for theatre goers who need to know their meal will be completed in time for the curtain going up. An aspect of this that clinched it for me was that you can enjoy a couple of courses before the show and then return at the interval for dessert.

Nina and I were there to see Vamos Cuba (an excellent carnival of dance show). Feeling quite peckish we had a selection of nibbles to waken the palate: vegetable crisps, mixed nuts and marinated olives. Nuts, as we all know, are quite addictive but the olives were very moreish too. The

salted nuts, however, brought on a thirst so I ordered a large Merlot from the concise, but well thought out wine list. Merely to ease the hankering for liquid elicited by the nibbles. It was a soft, fruity red from France that done its job.

Nina’s Australian Chardonnay was also a very nice wine.

The menu, like the wine list, was kept quite short and included something for everyone, and did its utmost to cater for those with allergies. Nothing really jumped out as exciting, but there were safe options that you knew would please.

Nina went all ‘70s and had prawn cocktail to open proceedings, which she said was “fab!” and followed it with a Beef Bourguignon, which she absolutely loved. “Oh, Michael,” she moaned ecstatically, “this beef is so tender.”

I went for something more modern, starting off with a roasted red onion and gruyere tart, the pastry of which was quite divine in a crumbly sort of way. I was then tempted into the salmon and champagne fishcake by its name but found it lacking the taste of either salmon or champagne,

and a tad oily. The caper and lemon sauce was a great accompaniment to it though, its sharpness cutting right through the mildness of the fishcake.

It is at this point, after the main course, when the server asks “would you like to see the dessert menu?” and we are usually quite full and say that we’ll share one.

But not tonight. At Churchill’s Bar and Kitchen you can stroll off to your seats to watch the show and at the break come back and your desserts are there on the table as if you’ve never been gone. This allows time for digestion and – crucially- the ability to eat a whole one yourself.

I returned to a citrus lemon cheesecake, with mixed berries and mint, an exquisitely sour little delight that cleared out the taste buds and set me up for the second act. Nina’s salted caramel and chocolate torte was a full on chocolate affair that, alongside the vanilla ice cream, could not fail to please.

Pre-theatre dining is nothing new but having a proper restaurant actually in the theatre is a great idea, and one that we will be taking advantage of.

A copy of the proposed Orders and other documents, including maps, giving more detailed particulars of the Orders are available for inspection during normal office hours until the end of six weeks from the date on which the Orders are made or, as the case may be, the Council decides not to make the Orders, at the Directorate of Regeneration, Enterprise and Skills, Strategic Transportation, Royal Borough of Greenwich, The Woolwich Centre, 35 Wellington Street, SE18 6HQ.
