Spirits of the age in Eltham Just in time for Halloween, the ghoulish gang at English Heritage has commissioned a book of ghost stories, set in some of their most frighteningly famous buildings.

Written by some of the UK’s leading storytellers, the book entitled Eight Ghosts: The English Heritage Book of New Ghost Stories includes fables from Mark Haddon, Sarah Perry and Max Porter, who had the enviable task of creating a spooky yarn about our very own Eltham Palace.

Max Porter has spent many years in publishing, but just over 12 months ago took the leap into authorship with his debut novel Grief is the Thing with Feathers. I spoke to Max at his home in Bath, where he told me, “I didn’t really plan to be a writer. I wrote my first novel just by accident really.”

The book examines the lives of a father and two boys who, after a sudden family bereavement, are visited by a character called Crow.

The story is loosely based on Max’s own childhood experiences, “I wrote it for my dead dad really and for my brother and it just kind of burst out of me.”

Max was living in South London at the time of the publication and the book’s phenomenal success – it won the International Dylan Thomas Prize, the Sunday Times PFD Young Writer of the Year Award and the Books Are My Bag Readers Award, and was shortlisted for the Guardian First Book Award and The Goldsmith’s Prize - has meant he has been able to become a fully-fledged author in his own right. The financial benefit of writing a best selling novel has also afforded Max the opportunity to make the move to a more sedate life in the South West and the affable author told me, “That book has been translated into 30 different languages. It’s going to be a film; it’s going to be a play. It’s an unbelievable change of life and I just feel really grateful.”

Max was chosen by English Heritage earlier this year to be one of the authors of their special new collection of ghost stories. Eight of the country’s foremost novelists and short story writers have written eight new English ghost stories,

each inspired by – and set within the walls of – one of English Heritage’s historic properties.

He was set the task of writing a chilling story set at Eltham Palace and after living in the area for many years, it was a space Max was familiar with. “I’d passed through Eltham a lot so I did know the palace very well.”

His supernatural story is called Mrs Charbury at Eltham and follows an elderly English Heritage member on a fateful visit to Eltham Palace. Max explained: “I’d been to Eltham Palace when I was a child, because I had those sort of Grandparents that had English Heritage membership. Returning was a bit spooky and that’s why I wrote the old lady in the story.

It was a homage to a grumpy old English Heritage member who’s always dragging her grandchildren around.”

The author visited Eltham Palace again earlier this year to gain inspiration for his ghost story and alongside an expert historian, was given the run of the place, in order to fully immerse himself in the eerie ambience.

And the outing made Max completely change tack about the type of story he was going to embark on writing. “I had a plan that I would write a ghost story about digital haunting; a woman that is basically an Instagram ghost finder.”

After reacquainting himself with the magnificent interior of the palace he changed his mind however, “I thought I had to do an

art deco story. I had no idea that the art deco stuff at Eltham was quite so over the top; the gold bathroom, the statues and the painted wall; it’s quite extravagant and so I wanted to truly get what the place felt like.”

So Max instead wrote a tale, which he believes has a real essence of Eltham and juxtaposes the old and the new.

“It’s not like other places and so I didn’t want it to be like other stories. It’s quite jarring and I think Eltham is quite a jarring spot.”

But according to Max, it’s not just Eltham Palace that is infiltrated by apparitions, “I decided that the whole of Eltham must be haunted, not just the palace.”

He reassures me however that I don’t need to be scared to go home, “Don’t worry, I’ve made it suitably silly; I think ghost stories should be silly.

My story’s quite camp and a bit ditzy, but then there’s a sort of sadness with the old lady in the palace just waiting and being acted upon by these ghosts.”

And Max is being brave and making another return visit to the palace for a special evening of fright on Friday 27 October.

Visitors are invited for a special event at the palace when they will be treated to a tour of the property along with a reading, Q&A and book signing with the bestselling author.

“The first draft was quite dark and I thought English Heritage wouldn’t be too pleased about me putting people off from going to Eltham.”

Max laughs and says, “Can you imagine me reading this really nasty ghost story in front of a room full of people? I made it a bit more of a classic ghost story, so it’s a bit more funny.”

udiences are being invited to join King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table on their quest for the Holy Grail next month, when The Bob Hope Theatre Actors’ Company presents the fabulously funny musical Spamalot.

with songs like “Find Your Grail”, “The Song That Goes Like This” and “Diva's Lament (Whatever happened to My Part?)” now considered standards among musical theatre aficionados.

It falls to The Lady of the Lake to deliver many of the big belters, but with director Larissa Webb doubling up as the diva, audiences are in for a real musical treat.

Larissa said: “Directing Spamalot has been an absolute pleasure! The script is hilarious, the songs are just brilliant and our cast is super talented. It has been made extra special as I have the privilege to be appearing in the show as well, alongside my sister and fabulous friends.”

The Bob Hope Theatre Actors’ Company will be hoping to replicate the success they had with their last production - the classic comedy Sand Castles - when they take to the stage with Spamalot next month.

Directed by local stage star Larissa Webb, the show will feature some of the area’s most talented performers including Neil Whitaker as the noble King Arthur, Cory Wordlaw as his downtrodden manservant Patsy and Bobby Youle as brave Sir Lancelot.

Spamalot is a musical parody of the Arthurian Legend and was adapted from the 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The show was originally produced on Broadway in 2004, where it was nominated for 14 Tony Awards, winning three, including the prize for Best Musical.

It has also enjoyed a number of West End runs, with the coveted role of King Arthur played by an array of esteemed thespians, including Tim Curry, Peter Davidson and most recently, funnyman Joe Pasquale.

The story follows King Arthur as he gathers together a band of knights and embarks on a quest to find the Holy Grail. Along the journey they encounter a cornucopia of colourful characters including the infamous Knights Who Say Ni, the Killer Rabbit of Caerbannog and a frenetic horde of French Taunters.

Jam-packed with Monty Python’s trademark hectic hilarity and some brilliant one-liners, Spamalot also boasts a sensational soundtrack.

Written by Eric Idle, John Du Prez and Neil Innes, it includes a tune you might recognise – “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life” - pinched from one of Python’s other feature length forays, The Life of Bryan.

Keeping it in the family T

here’s going to be some spooky goings on at the Orchard Theatre in Dartford, when a very ghoulish family takes up residence just in time for Halloween. The acclaimed venue will play host to the musical production of The Addams Family and with an all-star cast, the show promises to be one not to be missed.

The beloved fiendish dynasty started life as a cartoon strip in The New Yorker before the 60s television series ensured worldwide fame for Gomez, Morticia and the gang. A 90s film franchise, which starred Anjelica Huston, Raúl Juliá, Christina Ricca and Christopher Lloyd, further guaranteed historical significance within the world of entertainment for the macabre family.

The musical version by Andrew Lippa scored huge success on Broadway in 2010, but this new production marks the musical’s UK premiere.

The show, which has already wowed audiences at theatres across the country, brings with it a stellar cast, including YouTube sensation Carrie Hope Fletcher as a teenage Wednesday Addams.

The ultra talented young performer is joined by some veterans in the shape of Les Dennis, who plays crazy Uncle Fester and Samantha Womack, who fresh from leaving Eastenders takes on the role of Morticia and said, “I loved the TV series and I’ve watched the film with my children. The original series was quite intricate with its comedy timing and they had a fantastic body of actors” Les Dennis explained, “I think what’s great about the show is that whenever you mention The Addams Family, everybody has got a connection to it, whether they’re nine or 99.”

We join the infamous family a few years later than any of their previous adventures and Wednesday is 18. She has fallen for a ‘normal’ boy, much to the despair of her father, Gomez (played by Cameron Blakely).

relationship secret from his beloved wife in order to protect the family group.

Samantha said, “It’s the first time an untruth has been told and that’s what rocks the family.

It’s not so much that Wednesday is experimenting with a boy, it’s which boy.”

Samantha explains, “His mother wears yellow for God’s sake! It’s who he is that’s the problem and the family feels infiltrated. They have a safe dark world that works for them and letting the outside in is terrifying.”

I ask the pair if they feel any pressure taking on roles which

Les said, “Of course I’ve got the memory of Christopher Lloyd and Jackie Coogan, who was in the original TV series as Fester, but I’ve tried deliberately not to watch that and to just create my own Fester.”

Samantha continued, “I think for me it’s a mixed bag. I really like the idea that there’s an audience out there who have an anticipation because of the Morticias they’ve seen. That aids me in a way because it makes me excited about giving it to them.”

drastically alter their physical appearance for their portrayals with Samantha proving brunettes do have more fun after all and Les removing his usually perfectly coiffured locks entirely, not just to make sure he looks the part, but also to raise money for charity.

Les said, “I thought about wearing a bald cap but decided I would shave it and so I’ve shaved it for Breast Cancer Now.” There’s a real buzz about the show in theatreland with rumours of a West End transfer rife among critics who have almost universally loved the production.

Samantha said, “It’s comedic,

it’s poignant and it’s incredibly complicated musically and choreographically but our director Matthew White has gently guided us towards something really beautiful, so we’re really lucky.

I don’t think I’ve ever been in a group with so many people who I’m in awe of everyday.”

Les added, “There’s a real sense of excitement about it because we feel there’s an alchemy in the room and everybody is loving it.”

laswegian designer, illustrator and creative, Charles Jeffrey, is NOW Gallery’s third fashion commission. Charles’ first solo exhibition, The Come Up will be an interactive and three-dimensional representation of the Charles Jeffrey Loverboy brand and cult club night.

Based around Charles’ renowned illustrations, The Come Up will explore artworks amplified via new media. Showcased in a threedimensional format, the exhibition will act as a manifestation of Charles’ mind. Charles’ emotive and vibrant illustrations will be interpreted afresh through large sculptural pieces that will hang from the gallery’s seven-meter ceiling. The sculptures will be a mix of PVC, fibreglass, chicken wire with papier-mache, and electrical tape, varying greatly in size.

As part of the installation, a series of shelves filled with mixed media artistic materials will be the setting of an interactive experience that will invite visitors to open up their alter egos and let creativity take

Murder and mayhem G

ilda O’Neill (19512010) – bestselling author, journalist and broadcaster, published thirteen novels and six works of non-fiction in her lifetime, and was awarded an honorary doctorate for her research into London’s East End.

Her ironically titled The Good Old Days is a foray through nineteenth century London, with all its grit, grime and headline-grabbing debauchery. Endeavour Press will be publishing the book at the end of October ’17. The Weekender will be featuring extracts from the book in three serialization articles.

From chapter 6 - 1888 — Jack’s Reign of Terror: The year 1887 might have seen the commemoration of Victoria’s Golden Jubilee, but generally the mid-1880s were not a time for celebration. The winter of 1885 — 6 had seen the worst weather in living memory, causing distress in both town and country. Snow fell from October right though until May, and in January, in just seven hours, a full foot of it fell on the capital.

There was massive and escalating unemployment. Fear of mob violence was gripping the middling classes, while there were worries about the increasing radicalism among the labouring classes, as violence, riots and strikes were breaking out. There was worsening overcrowding in the slums and a rise in the numbers of homeless. In addition to this, a vicious campaign of anti-Semitism was being directed at the growing numbers of Jewish refugees who were fleeing to Britain to escape from the murderous pogroms of Tsarist Russia. All of these events, with their potential for sensationalism, were pounced on as great copy by the press. But despite all the fears and disturbances, by the August of 1888 — a far more than averagely eventful year, as William Fishman has shown in his book named for that year — they would pale into insignificance as it was realized that a serial killer had unleashed his wrath in the east of the capital.

He would terrorize the people of London and beyond, capturing and horrifying the imagination of the public right around the world. The Whitechapel murders would, open a window on to another side of life, one that many Victorians had either not known existed or had simply refused to acknowledge was there.

This was despite the evidence of their own eyes, as they nightly witnessed the hordes of desperate people sleeping rough in the royal

He would terrorize the people of London and beyond, capturing and horrifying the imagination of the public right around the world parks and in Trafalgar Square, right in the midst of what had been until then the comfortably complacent West End. There continues to be wide speculation, wild theories and passionate argument surrounding the events of that autumn of 1888, mostly regarding the identity of the murderer, who had come to be known as Jack the Ripper. As well as contemporary reports, both official and otherwise, and the many books dedicated to the subject — from the ludicrous to the scholarly — there are numerous websites favouring one theory or another. One of the most thorough, which brings much of the material and references together, can be found in Casebook: Jack the Ripper at www.casebook.org.

But to begin with, putting aside the identity of the killer, there isn’t even any agreement as to how many victims there were. Some extreme, self-styled ‘Ripper-ologists’ have speculated that over thirty women were murdered by the Ripper, while others contend that there were as few as three. Obviously three is still an appalling tally —

one would have been too many — but nothing like as shocking.

The general consensus, though, is that there were five victims.

The first was Mary Ann Nichols, known in the Victorian tradition as Polly — as was my own Victorian grandmother, who always held that the Ripper was, in fact, a woman, a midwife driven to madness by the seemingly endless abortions she had carried out for the ‘brides’.

The other four are thought to have been Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride, Catherine Eddowes and Mary Jane Kelly — with the deaths of Elizabeth Stride and Catherine Eddowes being known as the double killing, as they occurred on the same night. The evidence can just about be stretched to include Emma Smith and Martha Tabram, who both died before Polly Nichols — the first of the so-called canonical five — as it can for Rose Mylett, ‘Clay Pipe’ Alice McKenzie, and Frances Coles, who died after Mary Jane Kelly, the last of the five. Some of these have been dismissed because they weren’t killed at the weekend, which would spoil the theory that the murderer

was a butcher from the continental cattle boats that docked in the Thames late on Thursday evenings and left by Monday morning.

Another incident that some have claimed must have been the work of Jack the Ripper is reported in the following piece from the Penny Illustrated Paper of 24 November 1888, under the headline ‘Fresh East-End Outrage’. The method of the attempted murder seems close to that used on the generally accepted five victims, and the area in which the attack took place is well within that favoured by the killer.

An outrage ... was committed last Wednesday [at] about four o’clock in the morning, a man,

and a woman named Farmer, of the unfortunate class, engaged a bed at a common lodging-house in Georgestreet, Spitalfields. The man suddenly made an attempt to cut his companion’s throat.

The woman screamed loudly for assistance. Her throat was only slightly wounded, so that she was able to exert all her strength in coping with her assailant. He hastily fled the house. Meanwhile the screaming had attracted a few persons to the locality. These gave chase to the fugitive ... [but] the man disappeared somewhere, it is said, in the direction of Heneage-street ... she gave [a] detailed description of her assailant as follows:- age about thirty, height 5ft 6in ... the woman who had so fortunately escaped is between forty and fifty years of age ... [she] declares that the same man accosted her twelve months ago.

Despite the fact that the day of the week did not fit with the usual modus operandi, both the assailant’s and the potential victim’s descriptions fit well with those seen in the pattern of evidence presented in the principal five killings. The question has to be asked: did the writer of the report make the facts fit? But at least the artists responsible for the press sketches of the victims did not do them the injustice of prettifying and tidying them up to make them better copy.

Unlike the representations of the women who died so horribly that are shown in popular films and described in novels, the victims were not bright young beautiful things, but were drunks in their late thirties and forties.

They were living impoverished lives in every sense: separated from their families and with few possessions other than the clothes they stood up in and the few paltry items they could secrete about their persons, keeping them safe from the fingers of thieves mean enough to steal from those as poor, or even poorer, than themselves.

I

’ve often wandered along Westmount Road in Eltham and noticed the bustling deli, with a faux grass veranda, filled with people enjoying fresh charcuterie.

All in a Pickle opened last year and has brought a continental feel to the Eltham Park area with an array of cheeses, meats and other delights to take away or eat on the premises.

The artisan delicatessen is owed and run by Vicky and Will Clayton alongside Nicola and Darren Kellar, who all live nearby.

I popped along for an early lunch and was greeted by, not only some extremely friendly staff, but also an enthusiastic regular, who enthused of the virtues of frequent visits.

And you just have to look around to get an idea of the sort of fare

display, but in the end went for a strong and creamy Snowdonian Black Bomber cheddar and the best selling honey roast ham. I was also treated to the shop’s famous red chili jam - which is homemade by one of the owners and perfectly sweet but spicysome Kent crisps and a fresh salad. I washed it all down with a San Pellegrino lemonade and finished up with a cup of tea (I’m so rock n roll!).

Everything was beautifully prepared and displayed and I was given the chance to try goods from the counter before I ordered.

With a calming ambience within the well-decorated interior and a light lunch, which satisfied, but was healthy enough to make me feel virtuous, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, and vowed to return.
