Meantime Brewery is popping up in beer gardens all over England with a Summer Sessions bar, serving Meantime beers all weekend long. BEHIND THE CURTAIN

Curtain Call: A photographic exhibition by Matt Humphrey is on show in Blackheath until August 30. Blackheath local of over 20 years (and Blackheath Hall regular), actor and director John Schwab co-founded Curtain Call with portrait and production photographer Matt Humphrey in 2015.

The pair set out to produce an in-depth look behindthe-scenes of the best productions in the West End, and published Curtain Call: A Year Backstage in London Theatre in March 2016.

Alex set sights high

A

lex Chaston has only been playing wheelchair tennis for two years but he already has his sights set on Wimbledon and the Paralympics.

The fourteen-year-old from Deptford Bridge was just nine when he was left paralysed from the chest down by a rare neurological illness, transverse myelitis. Always sporty in the past, he soon took up wheelchair table tennis and basketball.

But it was a taster session in wheelchair tennis as part of a Time to Shine London 2012 legacy event that really gave Alex the bug for Paralympic sports.

He was spotted by a coach who told him he had a real talent and encouraged him to take up the sport.

“It came naturally to me really so I decided to give it a go,” said Alex.

He now trains four times a week at Greenwich Park and Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park,

as well as attending development camps. He is the youngest player training at Lee Valley where nearly all his teammates are adults.

This year he represented Great Britain as part of the junior team at the World Team Cup – wheelchair tennis’ answer to the Davis Cup – in Sardinia, Italy, defeating his Chilean opponent in his debut match. His achievements have led him to meet wheelchair tennis stars including Alfie Hewett, who recently retained the doubles title at Wimbledon.

He was also invited to an event hosted by the Tennis Foundation charity to identify new talent for the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo. Single Mum Michelle Philp said she was now hoping to fundraise and potentially secure sponsorship to help get Alex to Tokyo.

“It is expensive going to the tournaments and paying for travel and hotels as there’s no funding unless you’re playing for Team GB,” she explained.

Mark Cunningham recently started coaching Alex at Greenwich Park; he’s the first wheelchair tennis player he has trained.

He said: “We are keen to make our centre open to all and Alex is a real role model. I can see he has a drive and a passion and I’m sure he’ll go far.”

“We don't want to just stop with the documentary,” she continued.

“We would like to try and secure funding for these young people so that they never have to struggle again to be able to go on tour or to stay in school.”

Greenwich film producer is aiming to raise £10,000 to make a documentary about one of the oldest indigenous dances from South Africa.

Moira Rowan said the film would highlight the south African-based Riel Dancers, who are all aged between 16 and 19. “They go to boarding school and struggle to find the funding to keep on attending school…they have raw talent and given the opportunity can do very well,” she said. “They won a competition, which enabled them to travel to Los Angeles in 2015 to compete against the world’s best dancers, and they came home having won gold in the Ethnic Folk dance section,

Tales from the Arabian Nights reimagines some classic stories from the Silk Road into a family-friendly promenade performance, where the audience follow the show around the park under the night sky. Death in the ice at Maritime Museum

I

t was over 170 years ago that Sir John Franklin’s doomed Arctic expedition set sail from England in search of the North-West Passage.

HMS Erebus and HMS Terror were ultimately abandoned after becoming stuck in heavy sea ice and none of the 129 men on board would return. Search parties continued to look for the ships for 11 years after they disappeared and the mystery surrounding the fate of the crew have fascinated the Victorians and historians alike.

Now a new exhibition at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, Death in the Ice, seeks to answer some of the questions surrounding exactly what happened to the ships and their crew on that fateful journey.

Despite more than 40 expeditions to find the doomed ships it wasn’t until 2014 that HMS Erebus was discovered off the coast of Canada, followed by the discovery of HMS Terror last year. Dozens of artefacts have been recovered from the wreckages, preserved deep down in the icy water. Death in the Ice sees these objects, including personal items, clothing and components of the ship, return to London for the first time

since the ships set sail in 1845.

The exhibition also explores the Victorian fascination with the Arctic and the role of the indigenous Inuit population in revealing the fate of the Franklin expedition through oral history.

The curators also sought to emphasise that each one of the 129 sailors aboard the two ships were individuals, with families waiting for them back home.

Also on display are extracts from letters sent home to loved ones as well as a memorial of 129 flags planted outside the museum, each representing one of Franklin’s lost men.

Jeremy Michell, a curator at the museum, helped to research the background of the voyage and its crew for the exhibition.

Snippets of the crew members’ lives can be found in ship records and other documents like censuses. Sailors came from all over the country but the majority were from Kent and Greater London as areas like Woolwich and Chatham had significant naval bases. Most came from a working-class background with an average age of just 28.

“Life was often more comfortable at sea than on land for someone from a poor family.

At least in the navy they were clothed, paid and fed daily,” said

But there were also many dangers. The deaths of the crew are shrouded in mystery and several theories have been put forward. Post-mortems on the bodies of the first three crew members to die, which were perfectly preserved in permafrost, showed high lead levels suggesting they may have died from lead poisoning from tinned supplies or the plumbing system.

Other possible causes include botulism, a bacterial infection which may have been caused by undercooked meats as fuel supplies ran low, or scurvy, which would have kicked in when the ships were abandoned and food supplies were scarce.

Many were likely to have died from starvation and the extreme conditions. There is also evidence of cannibalism amongst the men from marks left on bodies which resemble the teeth of humans rather than animals as well as Inuit testimony.

Victorian society, appalled by such accounts, denounced the claims of those they considered “savages” and argued it was far more likely that the Inuits had killed Franklin’s men themselves.

Much of HMS Terror, which is in even better condition than

Erebus, is yet to be excavated but archaeologists hope it will uncover more clues about the fate of the expedition, perhaps in the form of documents or journals. But for now many of the details remain a mystery.

“The discoveries have raised more questions than answers,” said Jeremy. “We still don’t know exactly what happened to the ships or how the crew died. The next few years could bring some exciting findings.”

T

hamesmead is vast but doesn’t seem to have its fair share of eating establishments.

Those that are there are mainly takeaway or chain restaurants, so with those there all providing traditional comfort food they have to be on top of their game to rise above the competition.

The vastness of The Princess Alice reflects the proportions of the estate, with multiple rooms, a large, attractive beer garden, and its competitive prices seem to keep the locals happy. As do the

cheerful staff who chat away to all the customers.

I arrived at 7.30 on a Friday evening. Tina welcomed me and brought me up to speed with the very recent developments.

Just days before my visit the pub had been sold and Tina and her colleagues, who had all been kept on, were now being managed by different people. With no other obvious changes it appeared to be a pain-free transition with everyone carrying on as before.

Seeing as The Princess Alice is known as a carvery I said I would forgo the extensive menu that included ribs, chicken, and fish, etc. and go for the roast that comes in three different sizes. I went for the

Standard.

Even though there were about 20 customers, by the sheer enormity of the pub it still looked quite unbusy, especially for a Friday evening. There was a family gathering, a group of office workers, some young people drinking by the bar and others out in the garden. A chef came from the kitchen and sliced me off a couple of slices of topside and some nice, pink gammon before handing over the plate.

The vegetables (Peas, carrots, cauliflower) were okay, and a gravy with chunks of onion was very tasty, but the roast potatoes which, for me, are the highlight of a good roast dinner, had been left standing for far too long. They looked good and I’m sure at an earlier time they were just about perfect, but roast potatoes do not fare well in a hotplate.

Nevertheless, the Yorkshire Puddings were spot on and the meat was juicy and tender, and I went back for more of the onion gravy and cauliflower, but for me it is the roasties that make or break a dinner. This, though, is not a major problem and I’m sure the new management will work it out.

The family on the other table ordered from the menu, had it

cooked fresh, and did not leave a thing on their plates - even the kids ate everything - so there is nothing wrong with the cooking. Plus, my pint of John Smith’s washed away any negative thoughts about potatoes and refocussed my mind on beer and beef.

puddings were on offer.

I’m not sure this was the best time to review The Princess Alice as it goes through this change.

Perhaps the customers and staff are in a state of limbo, all waiting to see how things pan out. It has the potential to be a great local pub and I hope that is achieved by the new owners.

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Council of the Royal Borough of Greenwich (hereinafter referred to as “the Council”) proposes to make the above-mentioned Orders under section 6, 45, 46, 49 and 124 of and Part IV of Schedule 9 to the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, as amended.

2. The general effect of the Orders would be: (a) in Halstow Road: (i) to introduce a 2.1-metres maximum width vehicle restriction, located approximately 21.5 metres north of Humber Road; (ii) to accommodate the width restriction referred to in sub-paragraph (a)(i) above, to remove the Zone ‘W’ permit holders (or 2 hours free) parking places adjacent to Nos. 93 and 95 Humber Road and provide Zone ‘W’ permit holders (or 2 hours free) parking place of 30 metres in length on the west side, on the railway bridge and of 10 metres in length on the east side, adjacent to No. 2 Ormiston Road; and (b) to provide “at any time” waiting restrictions in the following lengths: (i) throughout Halstow Road, except where the parking places referred to in sub-paragraph (a)(ii) above would be provided; (ii) in Ormiston Road for 13.5 metres west and 10 metres east of Halstow Road; and (iii) in Humber Road for 10 metres either side of Halstow Road.

3. NOTICE IS ALSO HEREBY GIVEN that the Council proposes, under section 90A of the Highways Act 1980 to remove the existing road hump and construct the type of road hump known as a “speed table” across the full width of the carriageway in Halstow Road, with its centre line approximately 5 metres south of the southern kerb-line of Ormiston Road. The Speed Table would be an elevated section of carriageway with a flat top, 80 millimetres higher at its highest point than the surrounding carriageway and measuring approximately 7 metres in length, including the gradients which would each have a gradient of 1:12.

4. A copy of the proposed Orders and other documents, including maps, giving more detailed particulars of the Orders and of the road hump are available for inspection during normal office hours until the end of six weeks from the date on which the Orders are made or, as the case may be, the Council decides not to make the Orders, at the Directorate of Regeneration, Enterprise and Skills, Strategic Transportation, Royal Borough of Greenwich, The Woolwich Centre, 35 Wellington Street, SE18 6HQ. 5.
