Over the moon in Woolwich
Lunar-themed cultural festival makes its debut
T
he Handmaid’s Tale author Margaret Atwood is coming to Woolwich as part of a moon-themed cultural extravaganza making its debut in July, writes Laura Burgoine...
The Moon festival, hosted in partnership with the Royal Borough of Greenwich, is showcasing an eclectic programme of art, music, politics, botany, astronomy and gastronomy – all seen through a lunar lens. Festival director Livia Filotico said it’s been a long journey to get the festival off the ground, with organisers working with the Mayor’s office and London night czar Amy Lamé. “It was a creative response to the 50th anniversary of the moon landing,” Livia told the Weekender. “People are really inspired by the moon especially when we talk about poets, writers, creatives and people who look at the moon as a source of inspiration.” When Livia first contacted Margaret Atwood’s assistant, the author was intrigued. “I think Margaret liked that this is an event organised by a woman producer, someone coming up with a creative idea,” Livia said. The author is attending the festival as a personal favour. “She’s really engaged in the Handmaid’s Tale TV show, which is her focus for 2019,” Livia said. Livia came up with the idea for the festival at a writing retreat a couple of years ago. “I’m not a writer. I wanted to be a producer. I met the founder of LIFT, which is a theatre festival in London, and she started mentoring me without knowing,” she said. “We started talking about the moon and doing a festival around it. I said it needs to be in Greenwich: the home of time. I contacted the council and they suggested I do half in Greenwich, half in Woolwich because

It grew from there.” “Everyone has a relationship with the moon,” Livia continued. “Our creative strategist Susanna Lees teased content out of me. We didn’t want it to be just science so we started reaching out to as many of our heroes as possible. I asked myself ‘who do I love? Who would I want to see?’ I also want something that the creative community can enjoy, and something the over 55s can come to. I made it as diverse as possible.” “Over 55s can and should have fun; this audience isn’t being catered for at the moment.” The festival kicks off with a big public party in Woolwich. “It’s quite a large scale event with people from the borough and the rest of London, even the rest of the UK,” Livia said. “There’ll be 3D projections, light projections, and the best young jazz musicians in London making new work.” “There’s a lot of creativity in Woolwich.” EVENT SELECTION OVERLEAF

As well as being transported by this audio-visual gig experience, you’ll also get the opportunity to join a Royal Observatory Astronomer on the Top Deck for a mini-lecture about the moon’s power. The shining hull of the ship will be brought to life by Adrena Adrena, a collaboration between visual artist Daisy Dickinson and drummer E-Da Kazuhisa (Boredoms, Seefeel). The duo blend drums, electronic sound and organic visual work and feature in their performances an eight-foot white lunar sphere which hangs above Kazuhisa’s drum kit and which Dickinson projects lunar images onto. CACT checks 750 blood pressures in May Measurement Month
W
orking in partnership with the Royal Borough of Greenwich and the British Heart Foundation (BHF), Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) delivered 779 blood pressure tests across the Borough as part of a worldwide campaign.
CACT is commissioned by Royal Borough of Greenwich Public Health and Wellbeing to deliver the ‘Blood Pressure, Be Sure’ roadshow and a range of other programmes, from smoking cessation to healthy walks. With four months remaining, CACT is more than 80% of the way towards its 10,000 two-year blood pressure target, having undertaken 8,250 so far. May Measurement Month, a worldwide campaign to increase awareness of the risks of high blood pressures, promotes getting tested regularly and, if necessary, making simple lifestyle changes or using medication to reduce the risk of developing disease. Raised blood pressure is the number one contributing risk factor for global death. It causes strokes, heart attacks and various cardiovascular complications, which lead to an average of 10 million lives being

Crucially, only half of those with raised blood pressure know it, and CACT’s outreach team’s branded mobile unit was out and about at locations ranging from General Gordon Square in Woolwich to Passey Place in Eltham, encouraging local residents to take the time to get checked. They also visited workplaces like IKEA in Greenwich and the Woolwich Centre. During the month, the team used the branded mobile unit
to complete blood pressure checks at a variety of different locations. The BHF and Omron, which manufactures the digital blood pressure monitors CACT uses, organised a visit to the mobile unit at Morrisons in Thamesmere from television doctor Dr Zoe Williams and the University of Warwick’s Dr Franco Cappuccio, President of the British & Irish Hypertension Society. Of the individuals CACT checked the pressures of,
165 were booked onto an Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring clinic, which is a 24hour blood pressure monitoring unit, and 31 of those people were followed up by their GP. The ‘Blood Pressure, Be Sure’ programme is also supported by eight pharmacies throughout the Borough: St James Pharmacy in Woolwich, The Village Pharmacy in Charlton, Whinchat Pharmacy and Worthcare Pharmacy in Thamesmead, Temple Pharmacy (Lakedale) and Temple Pharmacy (Slade)

Although May Measurement Month has come to an end, you can still get your blood pressure checked with CACT at one of eight pharmacies listed above or look out for the mobile unit across the Borough.
