One Georgie Orwell returns to Greenwich Theatre One Georgie Orwell, premiered at Greenwich Theatre in 2012. Now, it returns to the venue this Sunday, in a new production by Creative Vortex.

Timed to coincide with the 70th anniversary of the publication of 1984, the show is a celebration of the life and work of Orwell, and features excerpts from the acclaimed writer’s other works including Animal Farm and Keep The Aspidistra Flying. Greenwich Family Arts Festival returns G

reenwich Family Arts Festival returns this week, bringing with it a host of free events, workshops, performances and multi-sensory experiences.

The annual festival was established as a partnership between Greenwich Theatre and Greenwich & Lewisham Young People’s Theatre (GLYPT), but for the past two years it has been produced exclusively by the latter.

Holly O’Mahony speaks to Jeremy James, artistic director and CEO of GLYPT to find out more.

“The heart of the festival is encouraging families to do things together. Not necessarily going to see a show, it might be doing a workshop or going to an event,” says Jeremy. “Sometimes with children’s theatre, adults switch off because they think it’s just for the kids, but there’s often a lot the adults could get out of it, too.”

Jeremy and the team at GLYPT are keen to keep most of the festival programme free. “We try to stretch the money as far as we can by making as many events free as possible,” he says.

This year, the festival programme breaks down into four distinct categories: free outdoor performances (which make up the majority of events), a smaller number of indoor shows, workshops, and events designed to draw people from different cultures together, such as Edible Tales – which Jeremy is particularly excited about.

“We have five chefs from five different cultures at each Edible Tales event, who are each cooking a different dish,” he says.

There’s a professional storyteller telling food-related stories from around the world and a host for each event, too. “The chefs introduce their dish and over the course of the meal, we encourage different people to tell their own stories.” This, Jeremy hopes, will lead into a later GLYPT project to create a community play telling the stories of local people.

Other highlights of this year’s Family Arts Festival include Games Without Wires, a celebration of board games from around the world, which

hopes to bring together people from different cultures, ages and genders for an afternoon of ‘gaming’ in General Gordon Square in Woolwich.

In a new collaboration for 2019, the festival has partnered with Sounds of the World, a musical series produced by musician and promoter Ganga Thapa and the Tramshed theatre. The event sees Britain’s most successful BritishBangladeshi artists, Shapla Salique and Guinean griot Mosi Conde, perform on Greenwich Bandstand.

There’s also the Pumpkin Story Tent – which originates from the Story Museum in Oxford – where little ones can go to hear tales and dress up as their favourite characters. The tent will also host a special event: The Little Prince dane workshop, a chance to explore the much-loved classic tale through movement.

An event which could be viewed through a political lens is Bees!. But, Jeremy is quick to stress the experience is more “wacky street theatre” than a bid to raise awareness of the plight of bees. Created by street theatre company Artizani, the event features an installation of six hives, each housing a multisensory experience relating to the honey-loving, black-and-yellowstriped insects – from hearing and feeling the bee to smelling and even tasting it. Without revealing too much, Jeremy adds that one hive in particular will shock those who get up close.

For the first time this year, the festival is focusing on a specific area of the borough each day, with Woolwich, Greenwich, Eltham and Thamesmead each getting at least one full day of events, while activities are spilling over into Plumstead and Middle Park, too.

“My hope is that the festival gives local people fun, engaging and often beautiful experiences that they can enjoy together as a family. It’s about coming together and sharing these experiences.”

A timely play about early onset dementia comes to Charlton T

heatre is an art form that serves many different purposes. There are comedies that make us laugh, plays that teach us about (or fictionalise) a specific event in history, and shows that offer pure fantasy and escapism, sometimes fuelled by songs and dancing, writes Holly O’Mahony...

practitioner whose plays fulfill a very different purpose: they focus on specific health problems and social care issues, often using the real-life stories of individuals and families dealing with the problems as a narrative focal point.

Brian wrote his first ‘healthcare play’, Don’t Leave Me Know, in 2012. The play, which Brian also acts in, explores the impact of early onset dementia on two very different families and is inspired by two real stories. Since it was first staged in 2013, Don’t Leave Me Know has been performed over 200 times in venues throughout the UK. It’s still in demand now, seven years later, and is being performed at the Greenwich Carers Centre on Thursday, May 23.

The Greenwich Weekender speaks to Brian Daniels to find out more about the show and his approach to creating theatre.

Holly O’Mahony: How would you describe your play Don’t Leave Me Know, which is being performed at the Greenwich Carers Centre this week?

Brian Daniels: Don’t Leave Me Now is based on true stories about two very different families, who are each struggling to come to terms with one adult in the family being diagnosed with early onset dementia. It questions: when does love end and

duty begin, or does it? It’s a play with both pathos and humour in it.

The audience tends to laugh and cry in equal measure.

HOM: Since Don’t Leave Me Know, you’ve written several more plays that focus on specific health problems and social care issues, from the point of view of those living with them. How did you come to find this niche for your work?

BD: The healthcare plays happened quite arbitrarily. I had a good friend in Yorkshire who developed early onset dementia – this was roughly eight years ago when less was known about the disease. I decided to develop a play about it, Don’t Leave Me Now, with the support of West Yorkshire Playhouse in Leeds. It proved a success, and led to healthcare organisations such as the NHS taking an interest in how drama can be used for educating professional staff and users of healthcare organisations.

I’ve since written several others [including Homeward Bound – a play commissioned by the National Council for Palliative Care – based on the true story of a woman coming to terms with her husband’s death as a result of pancreatic cancer, and the poor end-of-life care he received]. I’ve also written plays that are not health related, such as The Good and True about two Holocaust survivors.

HOM: How does the creative

process usually work? Is there a typical trajectory you follow when creating your healthcare plays?

BD: The research for the healthcare plays is usually time consuming. I’m currently commissioned to write a play about the disease Lymphoedema. This involves taking the time to interview those with the condition as well the experts on it. In this case, I’m being helped by Professor Peter Mortimer from St George’s Hospital in Tooting, who’s a world expert on the disease. It’s then a task of taking the science behind the illness and personal experiences of those living with it, and moulding them together into a story that sees each character go on a journey of discovery.

HOM: Your plays are often performed in unconventional performance spaces, such as care homes and hospitals, depending on what’s fitting for the topic of the play.

How important for you is it to bring your work into these spaces and have it seen by the professionals and community who inhabit them?

BD: Attending a formal theatre after a day’s work is not always easy with travel and family arrangements, not to mention the cost. Plus, the topics I write about are not exactly all-singing, alldancing musicals. It therefore feels more appropropriate that the plays are brought to community buildings

including hospitals, hospices, libraries and community centres.

HOM: Your plays presumably have quite a lengthy life span due the relevance of the issues covered in them. Does this mean you rarely ‘retire’ your shows?

BD: The plays are regularly in demand and there’s no shelf life for them. Some weeks we’re out performing three or four different plays in venues across the UK! HOM: How does your audience typically respond to seeing Don’t Leave Me Now? BD: There are moments when you can hear a pin drop because the audience is listening so intently to the story. We always have a discussion after the play with the audience, in which they frequently express their gratitude that the play is truthful in airing the challenges they face in coping with dementia.

Some people seem to be genuinely moved by the story because it spells out something of their own dilemma but also offers a way forward.

Deptford Cinema celebrates Bolivian Mother’s Day In celebration of Bolivian Mother’s Day (Monday, May 27), Deptford Cinema has partnered with the UK-based charity Friends of Bolivia to screen two Bolivian films on Saturday, May 25, writes Holly O’Mahony...

The films, La Vertiente (The Springfall) and Escribeme Postales a Copacabana (Write Me Postcards to Copacabana), have each been chosen for their strong female characters. Holly O’Mahony speaks to Juan Carlos, a programmer at Deptford Cinema and committee member of Friends of Bolivia, to find out more.

Mother’s Day is a big celebration in Bolivia and Friends of Bolivia always organise a fundraising event in honour of the occasion.

“It’s a very special day for us. We celebrate our mothers but also remember the women who fought against the Spanish army in the war for independence from Spain [which ran from 1809 – 1825].” explains

What are the distinctive traits of Bolivian cinema? “One theme that is quite pervasive is that Bolivian cinema is often political,” he says.

“Originally, Bolivian filmmakers were openly political in terms of content, with an emphasis on bringing to the fore issues that affected Bolivia’s indigenous population. But recently there has been resurgence in lighthearted social realism in cinema that aims to describe the current social problems in Bolivian society.”

The first of the two films showing as part of the double bill is Jorge Ruiz’s 1958 drama La Vertiente. The film is in part the story of a community in the Amazon who are struggling to gain access to drinking water, and part a romance between a teacher from the city of La Paz and a caiman hunter from the small town of Rurrenabaque.

The second, Escribeme Postales a Copacabana (2009), is by the German director Thomas Kronthaler. The story follows two

girls who are desperate to leave their homes in a small town by the lake Titicaca, who collect postcards from all over the world while they wait for an opportunity to do so. The arrival of a student from Munich and a businessman from La Paz marks the beginning of their final days together.

“We chose these particular films because they deal with strong female characters and their experiences in Bolivian society,” explains Juan, adding that the films are in fact polar opposites in terms of filmmaking styles and setting.

“La Vertiente was shot in black and white, and released in 1958. It was set in the eastern lowlands, in the Amazon rainforest,” he says. “The Copacabana film, meanwhile, came out in 2009 and is set in the Andes Mountains. It’s a German-Bolivian collaboration.”

Juan hopes the screenings will raise awareness of both Bolivian cinema and the work of the charity, Friends of Bolivia. “Although we

are not known to have a thriving film industry like our neighbours Argentina and Brazil, we have a strong cinematic tradition,” he says. “For a small country with a modest film-making industry, Bolivia has produced a fair number of interesting films over the years that provide an insight into the culture and struggles of Bolivian people.”

Both films are being screened in Spanish with English subtitles.

Money raised from ticket sales will go towards Friends of Bolivia, a charity that works to improve the living conditions of Bolivia’s most vulnerable people by providing financial assistance to charities and NGOs working in the country.

Volunteer to be a ranger The Royal Parks is launching a volunteer ranger service in Greenwich Park from July, with recruitment now underway, writes Laura Burgoine...

The Volunteer Ranger service is part of a three-year trial that will see volunteers operate at busy periods in three Royal Parks. The service is being rolled out in Greenwich Park to support The Royal Parks’ bid to the National Lottery Heritage Fund for the Greenwich Park Revealed project.

The Volunteer Rangers will primarily help visitors uncover fascinating facts about the history and nature of the World Heritage Site and encourage people to explore lesser known attractions in the park.

Jo Haywood, who leads the Volunteer Ranger service for the Royal Parks said: “Most people are familiar with the panoramic views of London from the General Wolfe statue but there are many

hidden gems that make Greenwich Park unique, from Queen Caroline’s Bath and the Queen’s Orchard, to the Wilderness Park which is home to a small herd of deer. This Volunteer Rangers will share this information with visitors, as well as providing tips on how they can help protect the park.”

Greenwich Park Revealed is a multimillion-pound project which aims to protect and enhance the park’s heritage and natural landscape, and work with the community and partners to bring new opportunities to locals through events, apprenticeships and volunteering.

Volunteers need to be 18 or over and able to commit to at least one day a month on a weekend until October. Full training will be given.

Global sounds in Greenwich Park Global artists are descending on Greenwich Park for a free concert. Sounds of the World is the first outdoor event in the music series, writes Laura Burgoine...

Celebrated Bengali folk musician, Shapla Salique and the UK’s finest Guinean griot, Mosi Conde are performing. Greenwich and Lewisham Young People’s Theatre (GLYPT) has partnered once again with musician and promoter Ganga Thapa to present the ninth in the Sounds Of The World series.

The event is supported by Greenwich Park Revealed, a major project led by the Royal Parks charity to protect Greenwich Park’s heritage and engage with communities.

Audiences can interact with the artists after the performances through a live Q&A Session.

Artistic Director and CEO of GLYPT, Jeremy James, said: “GLYPT are really excited to bring our established music program out of the Tramshed and into Greenwich Park, animating the Bandstand and creating a vibrant and melodious soundtrack for a memorable afternoon in Greenwich.

Shapla Salique is one of Britain’s most successful British-Bangladeshi artists. Her soulful sound has captivated audiences at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall, Houses of Parliament and Royal Albert Hall,

as well as international audiences in Canada, USA, Poland and Italy.

Salique’s new album, ‘No Boundaries’ was released in April 2016 to much acclaim.

Mosi Conde comes with heavyweight credentials. Born into one of West Africa’s core Griot families, Mosi Conde began playing the many instruments he is now master of from a very young age and has been touring professionally since he was 15, initially throughout Africa and then in Europe.

Cardiff Singer of the World competitor Katie Bray sings live at Blackheath Halls Mezzo-soprano singer Katie Bray is representing England in the Cardiff Singer of the World competition this June. Before she does, though, the Exeter-born singer is previewing her award-winning song programme at Blackheath Halls this Friday, May 24, accompanied by her musical partner William Vann on piano, writes Holly O’Mahony...

Katie began singing at a young age, inspired by French vocalist Édith Piaf, American musical queen Judy Garland, and her own mother’s “beautiful voice”.

Now a singer in her own right, Katie has performed with several prestigious companies, including the English National Opera and Scottish Opera.

Katie met her now musical partner William in 2008, when the pair were both students at

the Royal Academy of Music.

“Since that time, we’ve been very firm friends and a regular musical duo,” she says. “We were supported by the Josephine Baker Trust for many years, which gave us the opportunity to perform regular recitals all over the country.” Among their recent recitals was a performance at the Pizza Express Jazz Club in Chelsea, where they explored their favourite Kurt Weill songs.

Katie’s performance at Blackheath Halls this Friday is a strictly classical affair. Among the 14 pieces being performed are Handel’s ‘Where shall I fly?’, Britten’s ‘A Charm’ and Mozart’s ‘Smanie Implacabili’ (from his Cosi fan tutte).

After the Blackheath concert, it’s the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition for Katie. How does she feel about representing England? “I am equally thrilled and terrified at the prospect!” she says, modestly. “It’s an

international singing competition that has been running since 1983. Many fantastic singers and pianists have been involved in it over the years, and it’s a huge surprise to me to have been selected.”

If you’re keen to hear Katie and William perform live, their recital at Blackheath Halls might be your last chance for a while.

The duo have no further recitals planned in south east London right now, but Katie reassures us they’re likely to continue collaborating together for many years. “I’ve no doubt this partnership will continue… keep your eyes peeled for more from us!” she says.

An all-singing, all-tap-dancing revival sails into the Churchill

W

est Wickham Operatic Society (WWOS) are returning to the Churchill Theatre this week with their spring production: 1934 musical Anything Goes. The company bring biannual shows to the theatre and were last at the Churchill in October 2018 with their production of Sondheim’s Follies, writes Holly O’Mahony...

This is not the first time the company have taken on Anything Goes. “WWOS last presented Anything Goes at the Churchill in May 1999, exactly 20 years ago, so we felt it was the right time to return to this classic ‘boy meets girl’ story,” says Kevin Gauntlett, artistic director of WWOS. The story takes place on an ocean liner travelling from New York to London. On board is Billy Crocker, a stowaway in love with passenger and heiress Hope Harcourt, who is engaged to Lord Evelyn Oakleigh. With the help of nightclub singer Reno Sweeney and ‘Moonface’ Martin, Billy does what he can to win Hope’s love.

eventually joining the mix in 1986. Today, the company has an acting membership of approximately 75, and produces a musical production each spring and autumn at the Churchill Theatre in Bromley.

Now old hands at making it all come together, the rehearsal process for Anything Goes has been smooth, according to Kevin.

“We will be presenting Anything Goes with a full 12-piece jazz band on stage,” says Kevin.

“They will be raised above the stage on top of the ship looking down on the show. We are just hoping the band fit on top of the ship,” he laughs.

Among the things Kevin loves most about Anything Goes – a show he describes as a “hilarious shipboard romance” – is its funny script and wide-sweeping array of characters. “There’s an ancient short-sighted American banker,

star-crossed lovers, an English Lord, an all-singing, all-dancing evangelist nightclub singer and an infamous gangster disguised as a priest,” he chuckles.

WWOS was founded over 80 years ago in 1935. During their

first 25 years as a company, their repertoire was drawn solely from Gilbert and Sullivan, and English musical comedy, but in 1961 the musical comedy element was replaced by classical European operetta, with modern musicals

As a life coach I assist my clients with change in their lives, either with something that has happened to them, loss of a job, partner etc or they are feeling so stuck they wish to go ahead and trigger a new change in their lives for themselves.

However for most of us change is very challenging.

are going to be, to feel safe and secure, while the other direction is the human need for challenges, new adventures and deep personal fulfilment.

The need for security encourages us to remain firmly entrenched in our comfort zone, resisting change at all costs and therefore being very vulnerable when external forces inflict change upon us. Remaining in our comfort zone however does lead to frustration, boredom and a feeling that life is just passing us by, and the stark truth is that, it is. There is the famous quote ‘life starts outside your comfort zone’ and indeed it does. Do you remember the feeling when you have overcome a challenge in the past, been courageous and done something new, learnt a brand new skill? This is the feeling we crave, it’s the one that makes us feel truly alive and this only happens when we step outside of our comfort zone.

This doesn’t have to be a huge, big, massive change, it can be achieved in incremental steps, however there does have to be a sense of forward motion, a commitment to each step which provides the confidence for the next one. Each step, once accomplished, will bring the satisfaction, sense of achievement and fulfilment we are all looking for in our lives.

We need to understand that the human capacity for change is amazing. Our brains are wired to change and grow, it’s called neuroplasticity, simply the brain’s ability to reorganise itself by forming new neural connections throughout life. We are wired for change!

To better explain, I would like to share the experience of one of my clients, Rachel. Rachel lost her job and her long term relationship came to an end, all in the same week and when she came to me she was in free fall. Gripped by fear and despair, feeling that the very

foundations she had built her life upon had all just crumbled away.

With our coaching sessions she slowly began to reconstruct her life and gradually learnt to embrace these new changes. I encouraged her to step back and look at her life ‘bigger picture’ as I call it, what did she really want her life to look like in 5 and then 10 years’ time? By asking yourself these two simple questions, it assists a person to step back from the everyday minutiae that tend to consume our lives and gets us to refocus on our lives as whole.

Rachel began to realise that these perceived losses were in fact an opportunity to rebuild her life as she wanted, an opportunity for a fresh start. She chose to make the positive change, to view the loss of both her job and relationship as not an end but as an exciting, brand new beginning. A brand new chapter. Once Rachel started to see things differently, in a fresh, positive

light, she became accustomed to the feeling of being outside her comfort zone and was fueled by a new desire to create the life she truly wanted.

One year on, Rachel now has her own successful business, something she had always wanted to do, and also enjoying a new relationship. She is grateful for the changes that caused all the upheaval, because they gave her the opportunity to make new positive choices and to prioritise being truly fulfilled and happy.

Stepping outside our comfort zone and going with the flow of life’s changes just gets better with practice. It starts with the choice to see change as a positive force, one that enables us to take stock, make new decisions and live fulfilling lives. Change happens. It is a constant. How we deal with it is the difference between riding the waves or being swept away by the current.

CACT thanks supporters as football season draws to a close

he 2018/19 season is drawing to a close, but Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) has enjoyed a successful few months and its work continues throughout the year.

October saw CACT celebrate Young Greenwich Day at Charlton’s match against Coventry City to promote the youth service it delivers on behalf of the Royal Borough of Greenwich.

It’s an exciting time for Young Greenwich, which re-opened its new-look Valley Central Youth Hub in Charlton last month. The hub is one of four across the Borough.

The 1998 Play-Off Final 20th Anniversary Charity Dinner took place at The Valley in December, reuniting captain Mark Kinsella with several members of the famous side that beat Sunderland on penalties.

It was another brilliant year for the Charlton Upbeats, the Down’s syndrome group.

They won their eighth DS Active National Tournament title last June.

In March, four Upbeats took on Dillon Phillips, Chris Solly, Jake Forster-Caskey and Josh Cullen in a swimming race to promote April’s Upbeats Walk.

The players narrowly held on for victory, with the Upbeats falling just short of retaining the title they won last year.

In April, more than 200 fans walked nine miles from New Eltham to The Valley to raise more than £24,000 for the Upbeats.

The programme is entirely funded by voluntary donations.

In January, CACT re-launched its Street Violence Ruins Lives campaign, unveiling a new strategy.

The launch event was attended

by Sophie Linden, London’s Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, and representatives from Royal Greenwich and Peabody Trust, which are providing new funding through the Young Londoners Fund.

Awarded by the Mayor of London to help reduce street violence, the grant allows CACT to deliver enhanced training to youth workers and provide oneto-one mentoring with young people.

100 people from across the Charlton Family took part in a pitchside march on Red, White & Black Day to celebrate equality and diversity.

Others who participated included groups from CACT’s frame football and Short Breaks programmes for young people with disabilities.

and diversity-themed poetry competition across 20 of the schools it delivers in locally.

The three winners met Charlton Manager Lee Bowyer and Assistant Manager Johnnie Jackson, and also got to walk out of the tunnel as mascots on the day.

CACT’s Extra Time social group for over 55s has grown massively.

The weekly group meet at The Valley every Wednesday and participate in table tennis, human bingo, exercise for health and new age kurling, and occasionally go on day trips.

The new E-Z Cycle scheme has

seen dozens of Royal Greenwich residents hire an e-bike for four weeks. The Mayor of Greenwich is among those to have tried the scheme out.

he market would appear to have picked up, or so it seems in the South East. With the sales that have been agreed in Q1 this year and judging by the level of enquiries and activity we are experiencing currently; this trend is set to continue.

With this clear shift in the market, it’s been encouraging to be able to deliver for clients who had struggled to sell in the last year.

But before we start to celebrate, it’s important to note that buyers remain understandably cautious. Only competitively and realistically priced properties

are gaining any traction in this market, any would-be seller appearing speculative or pushing the price envelope are likely to encounter a harsh dose of reality.

The landscape’s transparency appears to be a blessing for buyers and a somewhat a curse for sellers.

There are deals to be had, provided that the economics work for all parties. Sellers are able to offset any differences from the sale on their onward purchase, so good old-fashioned estate agency has never been more valued by the clients. Service, transparency and good lines of communication are key in this market and therefore agents

can really prove their worth by ultimately delivering on vendors expectations in a timely fashion.

After 26 years as a sales manager in South East London, I anticipate that we will have a steady year as demand from buyers is on the rise.
