MARATHON FOR MINIS The Greenwich and Bexley Community Hospice is celebrating its 25th anniversary with the return of the Mini Marathon. Senior supermodels strut their stuff

enior supermodels are set to strut their stuff in Catford. Charity JustBe is launching its new project Moments4Seniors with a fun community event including a fashion show where over 65s are walking the catwalk, writes Laura Burgoine...

The London seniors will be modelling contemporary African attire by Gitas Portal. Fashion designer and owner of the Gitas Portal brand Mariatu Turay said: “I've always been a supporter of JustBe and believe in empowering each other so that we can discover new things about ourselves and push invisible and visible boundaries.”

“It's going to be another well organised, full of heartfelt laughs, smashing boundaries type of day.

These women would never have imagined themselves on the catwalk and for me that says it all.”

Barbara Gray, is the guest speaker on the day. There’s also a stand-up comedy set, a dance act and musical entertainment from Lovers Rock legend Paulette Tajah.

JustBe founder and CEO Yvette McDonald has been passionate about this project for a long time.

“Moments4Seniors is a project that will provide events and cultural activities to enable our senior citizens to achieve social inclusion living in London,” Yvette said. “They are still very young at heart and want to have fun too - our young people who have just grown up! Many feel lonely and isolated as family members move away and feel society becomes more fragmented. We want to honour and celebrate our elders and all they have done and continue to do for us.”

JustBe aims to empower, inspire and educate women irrespective of their background, by providing events across South London. The organisation successfully engages with women who may feel lonely

and isolated in their communities.

Since 2009 over 5000 women have attended JustBe events, which include an annual Black History Month Ball with over 200 attendees, and group outings of more than 1500 women to West End Theatre shows.

For the first time this year JustBe is supporting the unpaid adult carers in Lambeth by hosting an afternoon tea. There are a number of carers who look after friends, family member, partner or neighbour with an illness, disability, mental ill health or addiction.

New community station Maritime Radio goes live in Greenwich

T

une in at eight bells to Greenwich’s new radio station. Maritime Radio went live over Easter, following monthlong trial broadcasts back in 2015 and 2016, writes Laura Burgoine...

The station was awarded a community radio licence to broadcast to Greenwich after the government invited groups to apply to run community radio stations in London, in 2016.

Mayor of Greenwich, Christine May, was the first voice on the new channel, welcoming listeners, on April 20. Duncan Martin and David Phillips are leading a team of over 50 volunteers, with a wealth of experience from leading broadcasting institutions including the BBC, Channel 4, ITN and Global Radio.

“We believe local radio is important and when it is done properly, with the right funding, the right people and the right motives it can help change the lives of listeners and make a real and lasting impact to the area that it serves,” programme manager Duncan Martin said.

prosper and thrive, making a real impact on the economy of the areas where it still exists and it can provide skills and training to local people,” he continued.

The radio station is broadcasting from Shrewsbury House Community Centre on Shooters Hill. Shrewsbury House is run for the benefit of the local people of Shooters Hill and Plumstead Common.

Listeners can hear a mix of music, local news and events and can also get involved with programme making and news production.

Maritime Radio is owned and operated by Greenwich Media, a Community Interest Company; all profits are reinvested in running the radio service. The station also received funding from National Lottery’s Big Lottery Fund and the Royal Borough of Greenwich’s Community Arts Fund.

resh from appearing on the 2018 series of BBC One’s Strictly Come Dancing and making his US TV debut on Conan, Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee and selfproclaimed ‘Lie-in King’ Seann Walsh is heading back on tour with his brand new show After This One, I’m Going Home.

Ahead of his gig at Blackheath Halls, the comedian talks touring, Strictly, and that kiss, writes James Kettle...

A lot of people have the wrong idea about Seann Walsh. He tells me a true story that indicates the problem.

He was out in Glasgow recently – not drinking, having a quiet night out with friends. And he went outside for some fresh air and started chatting to a girl.

Seann takes up the story. “And after a few minutes, the girl said ‘You look exactly – exactly – like Seann Walsh.’

And I said, ‘I get that a lot.’ And she said ‘But he’s a p***k.’ And I said ‘I know what you mean. Why do you think he’s a p***k?’ And she said, ‘Just his general demeanour.’ Seann roars with laughter (it’s a noise you get used to in his company). “It’s very strange,” he muses, “that people can have these ideas about you, and still be talking to you for five minutes and getting along with you! I don’t know what idea they have of me, but it’s evidently different to that of the reality.”

Of course, we know why people have certain ideas about Seann. Six months ago, he was one of a number of the youngish male comics you see plugging holes in panel shows and comedy reality formats. Possibly best known to the public for his role as jaded rockstar Grizzo in Jack Dee’s ITV sitcom, Bad Move. Well-known to comedy critics and connoisseurs for a form of frank-speaking and gagheavy observational comedy that outstrips any of his ostensible peers.

Seasoned Walsh-watchers knew he had a massive, irresistible talent, if only he could find the right vehicle to get it in front of the public. And when he got picked for last year’s Strictly Come Dancing, it felt like this could be the moment. The BBC1 audience would fall in love with him, and come flocking to his then recently announced 2019 tour, After This One I’m Going Home. The early weeks panned out well, with viewers clearly warming to this awkward, disheveled bloke and his clear determination to impress.

But then…well, Seann. You explain what happened. In your own words.

He pauses, and thinks. How to express it? “I kissed my dance partner [Katya Jones] who was married.

I was in a long-term relationship.

And following that, I was central to a big media storm. And whilst a lot of stories about me then went out, what was actually happening to me in real life was very different to what was going out.”

Overnight, Seann found himself going through one of the bleakest aspects of the modern celebrity experience – a public shaming. He had journalists outside his house, going through his bins and following his parents around. And following him, too, on the lookout for a moment where he slipped up. “Every time I left a building and was half way through a blink, they’d take a picture and say ‘Seann Walsh drunk again.’”

The lie-in king I’d be cycling down my street and then suddenly it would be in the press that I was cycling recklessly because I wasn’t using my hands.

And someone posted comment on that saying ‘He’s just as irresponsible as I imagined him.’ People are out there imagining how irresponsible I am! That’s what it’s come to! It’s absolutely bonkers. Apparently Philip Schofield was having a go at me on This Morning. I mean, I stayed away from these things. I tried to. It became increasingly stressful and surreal.”

Suddenly Seann found himself having to cope not just with the personal repercussions of his own actions, but also the ensuing tabloid tornado – and at the same time continue to take part in the biggest show on television. “We get to the next Saturday, and it’s showbusiness, its entertainment. You’re there smiling on television but it’s not what you’re actually feeling.”

And how were you feeling? “My brain was fried. I hadn’t really slept.

We missed out on dance rehearsal days because of what happened.

Katya couldn’t teach me – we never really got the dance down because nothing would go into my head. I was

never there.”

Viewers of the show might have wondered that week if Seann would walk away from Strictly. He came closer to it than they knew. “I did quit the show that week, and then my agent, friends and people close to me convinced me not to. But I did actually quit.”

The reason he eventually stayed was out of a desire not to be defeated by all those forces out to bring him down. When he’d signed up for Strictly, Seann hadn’t taken it all that seriously. He didn’t have dreams of winning the final or getting to Blackpool, he saw it as “just an entertainment show.” Under the new circumstances he found himself in, everything felt different. “It was halfway through the week and suddenly, with the way I was being vilified in the media and the hatred coming my way, suddenly – this show suddenly meant something to me. It meant that getting through would be a victory.”

Somehow, Seann made it through another couple of weeks of Strictly.

When the judges let him go, it felt more like a merciful release than an elimination. He was then left to come

to terms with the consequences of his misjudged snog – the kind of mistake that’s sad though unremarkable when it happens between ordinary people, but looks so much worse through the mad prism of the media and tabloids.

Seann realised that he wanted to talk about the experience on stage.

Not to cash in, but because that’s what his stand-up has always been about – taking the raw material of his life and finding the funny within it. And while the whole situation was harrowing to live through, he could also see the undercurrent of humour.

“I started to realise that if I were to take a step back, there are elements of this that are sort of funny. When you look at the fact there were people dressed up as me for Halloween.

That’s just something you never think is going to happen to you. And then there were stories circulating that Television X were offering me 500 thousand pounds to do a porn film with Katya. I mean, these things that start happening to you, and although you’re not laughing at them at the time – I couldn’t laugh, I was an absolute mess – but deep down I still knew certain aspects were funny.”

The new show tells the story of what

happened to Seann from the moment the photo was published to his appearance on Strictly the following Saturday. There are flash-backs, and flash-forwards, but essentially it’s the story of that devastating week. He discusses in detail his decision to go on the show in the first place (despite its high profile, it was far from a nobrainer for Seann) and everything that went through his mind when he found out the photo existed.

All stand-ups, including Seann, depend on workshopping new material to find out what’s successful and what stinks. But it was impossible to try out Seann’s new material giving the continuing level of tabloid and media interest. “At my very first gig an audience member recorded my set on their phone and then sold it to a tabloid newspaper,” he explains.

“And then basically almost every time I did a gig, someone would film it and someone would sell it to the papers. So it became impossible to do work-in-progress shows. So I went to America for a month, and I did something I’d never done before – I wrote the whole show.” There was no workshopping, no trying out five minutes here, ten minutes there. Seann created his new show as a complete work of art. “I worked harder on it than I’ve ever worked on anything. Ever.”

In some ways it’s a natural development from his previous shows, but it’s deeper and less flippant than anything he’s done before. “The main difference is this is personal and it really means something to me. And previously my shows have started with me going ‘Well, what am I like? Where am I at in my life?’ So a show will be about moving in on your own. A show will be about moving in with your girlfriend, a show will be about turning 30. But you know – those don’t have serious consequences normally, and this did!”

Seann’s determined to make a big statement with this show – perhaps because he’s equally determined that will be the last time he tours for a good long while. Unusually for a comedian, he genuinely enjoys acting work and would like to be doing more of it. “It’s weird, because you always hear comedians getting asked that question and comedians always say they prefer stand-up. Not for me, stand-up comedy stresses me out too much. I get very stressed, and every single night when I’m stood at the side of the stage, I think this could be the one where I bomb.”

If that was true when he was just making jokes about boozing and slacking, it’ll be even more so with this revelatory new show, whose emotional frankness is already drawing critical raves. “This was the biggest thing that’s ever happened to me in my life. And I think this was the only time I could do it. I won’t be able to talk about it in two years’ time and the audience certainly won’t care anymore. And right now it’s still raw, I’m not completely over it. It still haunts me and I’m doing the show while that’s still fresh. I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing, but it’s something I felt I had to do.”

ll locals who have their roots in Bermondsey will know Danny Baker, writes Michael Holland...

Some of us will have went to school with him, some of us will have grown up on the Silwood Estate with him, others will have known him from his DJing days in local pubs or via his diverse career that has taken in journalism, TV presenting, and a wide-ranging radio presence that has included playing records at one end of the spectrum and sport at the other, with an array of broadcasting paraphernalia in between that made him unmissable.

Not everyone ‘got’ Baker but still had to listen because he was nothing like anyone else.

For me his most memorable moment was on BBC London when, just as he went on air the day after he won an award for radio, he was told his show was being cut. What followed was the best three hours of radio I can remember as he relentlessly tore into his BBC bosses.

One aspect of Danny’s life that not everyone is aware of is his prolific writing. After a few weeks on the reception desk at the New Musical Express offices he was writing articles for the paper. Soon after he found himself in New York interviewing John Lennon! It is episodes like that which have formed his life: right place, right time, with nothing planned out for the future. He definitely didn’t factor in the cancer that took him away from the spotlight for a while, but we, united as one, gave an all-embracing sigh of relief when he got the all clear after treatment. Post-cancer he wrote three volumes of autobiography, the first of

“I only wanted to do one Cradle to the Stage show but that became 5, then 10, 20, 40, 60 shows, from Cumbria down to the Isle of Wight” which became Cradle to the Grave, a six-part sitcom that gained him fans who were not aware of his earlier work.

Two years ago, however, Danny revealed to all his Twitter followers that he would retire at 60. I for one didn’t believe it; he seemed to be having so much fun that it couldn’t even be counted as ‘work’. Since that ‘retirement’ he has toured the UK with his successful one man show, Cradle to the Stage, that took his books out into the theatre, and has also teamed up with Gary Lineker to create a twin striker partnership for their podcast, Behind Closed Doors.

Now there is a new tour - Good Time Charlie’s Back - and was surprised to hear that he had no plans for ever doing something like this: ‘I was trying to retire so we could go out to Portugal and live on the beach,’ he begins before telling me how he wanted to finish off by ‘getting a few quid from doing “I’m A Celebrity…” I only wanted to do one Cradle to the Stage show but that became 5, then 10, 20, 40, 60 shows, from Cumbria down to the Isle of Wight… The audiences loved it, I loved it, but my wife was drumming her fingers and asking when we were

buggering off to Portugal.’ However, the theatre bug had bitten so this second tour, with another 60 dates booked, will fill in the gaps left gaping from the first tour. ‘And there will probably be a third,’ he hints.

When touring, Danny spaces the dates and venues so that he can get back home to his beloved family regularly. ‘There’s just me in a van with a driver named Giles,’ he says.

‘He picks me up, takes me to the gig, then we stay in a good hotel, have a bottle of wine, sleep, have breakfast and get on the road to the next one.’

Each show is played pretty much off the cuff, although Danny has some specific tried and tested stories that he always uses. He recounted one favourite of being shot with an air gun - twice - in Bermondsey by West Ham fans. I’ve read it in his book but hearing it ‘live’ is even more hilarious.

He uses photos to get the anecdotes rolling and although he has over 40 images to hand, he has never used more than 8 in a show. He knows what works and has become adept at timing his performances so they don’t run over after he saw two-thirds of his Bromley audience leave - mid story - towards the end: ‘The car park

closes in a minute, shouted one to a bemused Mr Baker.

His shows are relatable to anyone anywhere. ‘They are working class stories which are very familiar to anyone who lived and went to school in places like us,’ he tells me while explaining why the performances are appreciated - and sold out - all over the UK. The touring shows allow him to be himself without the restrictions of broadcasting regulations, and I sense that he feels that this is a real highlight in his eclectic career. He has no producer in his earpiece telling him to cut, finish, or stop a certain line of thought. Here the leash is off. It is like his whole life was meant to lead to this.

‘Gary Lineker rung me up and left a load of messages on my phone that I came home from holiday to; the final unanswered message saying, “I suppose that’s a no, then!” I didn’t know what he was talking about.’ Checking through he found that he was being asked to do a podcast with the Match of the Day man. ‘I’d never wanted to do a podcast before as there’s no money in them, apparently, but it went straight to Number One in the podcast charts!’

The deadly duo have now taken their

show on the road with a couple of gigs booked, ‘and that’s gonna turn into a tour, I suspect,’ adds Danny. ‘So Wendy’s still saying, “When are we going to live on a beach?”’

Millwall’s most famous fan had to tell his wife, ‘I don’t know,’ and readily admits, the podcast was ‘like everything else in my life over the last 40 odd years, something I never knew was coming round the corner.’

I asked about a next book. ‘Yes, Going Round the Houses will be all the stories I never told in the other ones…

I might be sitting round a table talking and think, “Ooh, I’ve not done that story”, and make a note to put it in.’

Another surprise success was the children’s book Danny wrote, Lucie Goose, which has done well in all the English-speaking countries, like the autobiographies, but remarkably well in ‘Germany, Finland and Italy… If China buy it,’ he jokes, ‘I’m gonna buy a solid gold house on a hill!’

For now, though, the tour and podcast is stopping the Bakers going off to live by the sea - The move that Danny calls his ‘Third and Final Act’.

He reveals he finds it difficult when ‘people keep saying to me, “Come and have a go at this.” So what do you do? Every time I think I’m going to pull up the stumps and say “That’ll do” something else comes up’.

Jack the PR man gave a one minute warning so I asked for some last words. ’There will be another children’s book; Cradle to the Grave will return and Good Time Charlie’s Back will continue to visit towns around Britain.’

Celebrities mark launch of Blackheath High’s new school B

lackheath High School GDST’s £18 million redevelopment was officially opened on May 2 with a star-studded line-up including prominent women’s rights campaigner Caroline Criado-Perez and ITV News anchor Charlene White, writes Laura Burgoine...

Criado-Perez, the author of Invisible Women who led the campaign to put Jane Austen on the £10 note, was invited by the school to mark the official opening of its new facilities. Addressing Blackheath High parents, teachers, alumni and students, Criado-Perez’s speech touched on the need to give women the freedom and power to flourish, saying: “The way for women to escape the straight jacket society puts them in is not to denigrate them, but to raise them up.”

Channelling Virginia Woolf’s A Room of One’s Own, the campaigner concluded her address by saying she hoped the all new Blackheath High School would provide the necessary space for girls to maximise their full potential: “I hope these spaces opening today give the room to flourish for generations of Blackheath girls to come.”

Criado-Perez’s speech was part of Blackheath High’s ongoing ‘Wollstonecraft Speaker Series’ where inspiring figures are invited to the school to speak to the students about their lives and careers.

Joining Caroline in marking the occasion was former Blackheath High alumna and ITV London news anchor Charlene White.

The evening was officially opened by Cheryl Giovannoni, CEO of GDST, whose vision it is to shape the future of girls’ education.

Together with the Girls’ Day School Trust (GDST), Blackheath High school has invested £18 million over five years to provide new state of art the facilities.

These include a brand-new library and resources centre; specialist teaching environments for Art, Design andTechnology and Music; cutting-edge Mac suite; and Apple technology in all classrooms for teaching and expansive gallery and exhibition spaces.

As well as investing in the girls’ learning development, the school has created a wellbeing Sedum roof garden for girls to relax and enjoy which sits above an architecturally designed courtyard with "Mini-Louvre" at the heart

of the school. Also added is ‘The Pod’, a contemplation space for meditation and idea generation.

Blackheath High has also boosted its sports offer by adding a brand-new top of the range fitness suite and outdoor games court to complement their existing multi acre Sports Campus, along with a brand new Sixth Form Centre to inspire a mature, preuniversity atmosphere.

History

The story behind the Angerstein crossing

e had a bit of a kerfuffle last week when some houses in Fairthorn Road had letters posted through their doors from Network Rail to say that the Angerstein foot crossing was going to be permanently closed.

I guess that very few people outside of the immediate area of Westcombe Park and the western end of Charlton will have any idea about this. It’s a tiny, isolated, unguarded level crossing which hundreds of people use every day. It crosses the Angerstein Railway - and perhaps it would be best to explain about that first.

The Angerstein railway has never been used for passenger traffic and is hardly known outside Greenwich and railway enthusiast circles. I must admit to having been on it for a ‘spotters’ special trip’ – and when we reached the foot crossing there was a crowd of friends waiting to see me on the train.

So why 'Angerstein'? It is a name which keeps cropping up in the East Greenwich area. It originates with the romantic figure of John Julius Angerstein - a Russian financier who it has been suspected was the illegitimate son of the Empress Ann of Russia and a British banker and who spent a long working life in the City of London. In 1774 he bought Woodlands, now used by the Steiner

School in Mycenae Road. He had a picture gallery there which he left to the nation, thus founding the National Gallery.

Angerstein bought a lot of the area which now is Westcombe Park along with a big chunk of Greenwich marsh, now Greenwich Peninsula.

His son John owned the whole stretch of land between the river and the Dover Road and which included Combe Farmhouse slightly north of Westcombe Park Station. In 1851 the North Kent railway was being built through a tunnel from Blackheath emerging at a point adjacent to Angerstein land. All that was needed was to build a connecting railway to a riverside wharf and good business would be guaranteed.

So, in 1851 a railway was planned to run on Angerstein's land to the riverside from the North Kent Railway as it turns from the Blackheath tunnel to go into Charlton Station. Built on private land, there was no need for an Act of Parliament except for the bridge needed to cross the Lower Turnpike Road, now Woolwich Road, between Greenwich and Woolwich.

We see that railway bridge every day going down Woolwich Road and I bet hardly anyone really notices it.

The line is on an embankment said to have been built with the spoil removed from the Blackheath/ Charlton railway tunnel. The south end is parallel between the motorway and Westcombe Hill but then runs straight down to the river to Angerstein Wharf. It opened in 1852 and was immediately leased to the South Eastern railway for management. Although it was probably intended that there would be a connecting ferry over the river, this never happened and it has remained entirely a goods line.

As industry grew in East Greenwich and Charlton so the line was

extended. In the 1890s a branch went right across the Peninsula into the gas works via a bridge across what is now the crossing from West Parkside to the Pilot. There was a connection to lines inside the London County Council Central Tram Repair Depot which stood alongside the line in Woolwich Road and many, many other factories. In 1925 up to fourteen branch lines handled 'manure, steel rails, fertiliser, coal, coke, stone, sand, flour, slates and timber. In 1951 it was handling petroleum spirit and oil –plus Fullers Earth from Redhill, timber flour, manure, iron and steel, waste paper.

Today the wharf handles aggregate coming in by ship and distributed via the railway line.

Thirty years ago the line was so under-used that it was possible to walk the length of it without any interference from security men.

There was much to see including the remains of much railway equipment including a number of derelict trucks.

I hesitate to try and describe the line today because every rail buff in the land will say I am wrong. I doubt however that in its 167 years of existence it has changed very much, South of the Blackheath tunnel the South Eastern rail line runs through an old chalk pit which was the site of the Angerstein railway signalling works, but is now in use as the Police Pound. The railway continues south to cross the Woolwich Road - is this still the original bridge from the 1850s? - and goes alongside what was locally known as the 'Airfix' works but was built as the London County Council Tram Depot. From the railway embankment you could once have seen a turntable and lines used for the trams. In the 1980s two massive bridges were built to take the line across the newly built Bugsby's Way. The

line into the gasworks was on an embankment which was destroyed for the Millennium Exhibition in 2000, despite a campaign to turn it into a public rail route down the Peninsula.

So – what about the foot crossing?

From old maps you can see that there was a footpath which went from Combe Farm, to fields to the east of them. These fields later became chalk pits and the path was used by workers to access the main road. When the Angerstein railway was built it appears that the footpath was preserved as a tunnel under the new line - in fact you can still see the old tunnel under the embankment. At some point steps were built up to the line and the foot crossing was created. In the 1960s the motorway was built from the Sun in the Sands to the Blackwall Tunnel and the road layout was drastically changed. A bridge was provided from Westcombe Park station to go across the motorway, to meet the steps to the rail crossing and then on to Charlton. More recently new housing to the north of Gurdon Road has meant enormous numbers of residents use the path to get to Westcombe Park station.

We have all had through our letter boxes letters from Network Rail about their new signaling system on the line from London Bridge to Dartford and it is this which is given as the reason for the closure of the Angerstein foot crossing. They also say there will be increased usage of the line - but this is this only to go from two or three trains a day to 20 or so. Over this stretch of line trains go at less than 5 miles an hour and it is very easy to see them. Of course we – and Network rail - have to keep safety in mind and hopefully everyone understands that.

News of the impending closure caused an enormous uproar. Within

24 hours Greenwich Council’s legal department had been contacted and they had written to Network Rail reminding them about proper procedures for such closures. Matt Pennycook, our local MP, had also contacted network rail and apparently spoke at length to those in charge.

As a result Network Rail decided they weren’t going to close the crossing after all!

Regardless of everything else it would be a shame for this little crossing to go. It is a charming and isolated spot where for a second you can imagine yourself at a countryside railway in the 19th century – and, coincidentally, had just been declared a heritage asset by a local community group.

1. The Royal Borough of Greenwich intends to makes this Order in exercise of powers under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. This is to facilitate works by Thames Water who need to carry out repair works to the carriage way.

2. The Order will come into operation on 24th May 2019 and would continue to be valid for 18 months. However the works are expected to take 5 days. The duration of the Order can be extended with the approval of the Secretary of State for Transport.

3. The effect of the Order would be to temporarily prohibit vehicles from entering, exiting, proceeding or waiting (including waiting for the purposes of loading or unloading. in Ravine Grove at the junction with The Slade.

4. Whilst the Order is in operation traffic will be diverted via The Slade, Kings Highway, Sutcliffe Road & Vice Versa. Prohibitions remain in force, pedestrians are not affected and vehicle access will be maintained wherever possible.
