BITTY McLEAN IS BACK In 1992, Bitty McLean coproduced, played and sang on UB40’s hugely successful album Promises And Lies, selling in excess of 8 million copies. Life on the farm in

N

o time of year is more magical or life-affirming on a farm than spring.

Chicks are hatching, lambs are taking their first steps, and flowers, trees and hedges are coming into bloom. Together, it’s a heartwarming site to behold and makes for a great day out.

But what’s it like to work on a farm during spring? Holly O’Mahony speaks to Hannah Ricketts, education officer at Woodlands Farm in Welling, to find out.

“The spring is a wonderful time around the farm as the flowers and hedgerows come into bloom,” affirms Hannah. “We have wonderful blackthorn and cherry blossom, which is a fantastic place to spot the honey bees and bumblebees feeding.” At the same time, Hannah points out spring is also an incredibly busy time for those working hard to make sure it all runs smoothly. “Our sheep were lambing from mid-March through to the end of April and this year, we had cows giving birth to calves in April as well,” she explains. “Because the cows are inside until April and the sheep are inside during lambing, there’s a lot more work with feeding and mucking out.”

The work involved with running a farm doesn't end with caring for animals and wildlife, either.

“We try to run a variety of events that are linked to seasonality of activities on the farm,” explains Hannah. “For our children’s events, we run a number of wildlife, farming and craft workshops. Most people know about the animals on the farm but not the variety of wildlife, so we always try and illustrate what we have through either our bird walks for adults or pond dipping and mini-beast hunts for children,” she says. “We want our events to reflect all the different elements of Woodlands Farm.”

As education officer, a typical day for Hannah involves overseeing the local school groups visiting the farm. “We take schools every day and run a variety of activities, from farm tours and pond dipping to cookery and literacy sessions,” she explains. During spring, Hannah sets up a nest box camera in the classroom, through which the children can observe blue tits and other birds making nests for their eggs. “Schools are typically at the farm from 10am until 2:30pm, after when I catch up on farm admin. In addition to this, on Thursdays I run a toddler group for local parents and toddlers."

top of running a working farm?

“Woodlands is run as a working farm, however our visitors are a major part of what the farm is about,” Hannah says. “The main ethos of the farm is as an education and conservation project, so we aim to educate the public about the importance of farming as well as what is involved,” she explains. “It's important as many people would not normally have the opportunity to visit a working farm.”

“Obviously, as a working farm there are days when we need to ensure the public aren’t around for safety, so we are closed on Mondays to allow us to do the activities which would be difficult to do if the farmyard was busy with visitors – such as moving flocks of sheep around or clearing out the barn with the tractor.”

The job of a farm manager is, understandably, very different to Hannah's role in educating

visitors. “Our farm manager begins the day working with our team of volunteers feeding and checking on all the animals,” she says. “In spring, a lot of time is spent sorting out the ewes and

lambs which have been born.

The role involves ear tagging the lambs, and moving them into the fields when we know they are doing well and feeding properly.”

But there are other jobs, too, that

are less in the public eye and far less celebrated. “For example, maintaining fences, managing the vegetation around the farm and mucking out.” The hardest part of the farm manager role, Hannah

"Our cottage garden and hedgerows are coming into bloom, which means it won’t be long until our beautiful hay meadows will be filled with wildflowers" explains, is the long hours. “At this time of year, the farm manager spends long days on the farm and is always on call in case the sheep have difficulty lambing.”

Woodlands Farm also offers a range of art-based classes for adults, such as its current fourweek courses in wet felting and crochet. “Our textile courses are run by the South East Yarn Academy (SEYA) London,” says Hannah. The idea behind the classes is to show the link between the farm and craft production.

“Woodlands Farm is predominantly a sheep farm with around 80 sheep. In May, we usually do our shearing and we often get enquiries from local craft people looking to purchase the fleece.”

The team realised the potential to extend access to the materials to the local community and began providing courses which aim to teach people the skills of working with wool. “Over the four weeks,

attendees produce their own items to keep, using the farm and the natural materials they are working with as inspiration.”

So, what does the future look like for Woodlands Farm?

“We’re aiming to become a rare breed centre for farm animals.

We currently have some Manx Loaghtan sheep on the farm, of which there are only between 900 – 1500 left in the world.”

For Hannah, the best thing about working on the farm during spring is being surrounded every day by signs of new life. “I get to see everything coming alive again. Our cottage garden and hedgerows are coming into bloom, which means it won’t be long until our beautiful hay meadows will be filled with wildflowers.”

Natacha Atlas brings Strange Days to Blackheath Halls E

gyptian-British Singer Natacha Atlas is at Blackheath Halls on Saturday May 11, performing songs from her forthcoming album Strange Days, which is due to be released later this year in September. Natacha is known for creating music that fuses eastern and western sounds, and has experimented with a range of different genres, from hip-hop to jazz.

Holly O’Mahony speaks to Natacha to find out more about her influences and her career making music.

Natacha was born to AngloEgyptian parents in Belgium and lived there for several years before attending a boarding school in Sussex. “I was raised listening to music from around the globe and from a young age I was interested in music from both the east and west,” she says. “I grew up listening to cassettes from Egypt, Lebanon and Turkey that I had been given by relatives.”

By the time she was 17,

Natacha was making her own music. She was yet to find a sound that felt uniquely hers, but knew her interest lay in blending Arabic and western music.

She moved to London in her early 20s and began recording electro-chaabi (modern pop) with world fusion group Transglobal Underground and bass guitarist Jah Wobble.

Natacha had her real break in 1995, with the release of her first solo album Diaspora. More albums followed, but it was Natacha’s version of ‘Mon amie la rose’, originally recorded by Françoise Hardy in 1964, that became a surprise hit, featuring in the top 20 of the French Singles Charts in 1999.

“The North African Arab population really connected with it,” Natacha recalls. “The cover was huge then and even now, it’s a song lots of people on the French version of [TV show] The Voice.” Natacha recorded the song in French and was able to get by touring in Frenchspeaking countries too, thanks to her early years in Belgium.

Over the past 10 years, Natacha’s music has moved

away from chaabi and towards Egyptian jazz. “I went more into the jazz side of things collaborating with my cocomposer Samy Bishai and the French-Lebanese jazz trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf,” she explains.

“I went through a very acoustic period, going back to the roots of the music I’ve been influenced by. I wanted to find out more about the traditional and classical styles, and specifically, I wanted to learn more about how the quarter tone scales are used in Arabic music.”

The result of this exploration is Natacha’s upcoming album Strange Days, which she says is very much Egyptian jazz.

“It’s been a learning curve for me,” she says. “Jazz is a kind of music that you need to absorb; you need to develop a relationship with it to feel what’s going on, and only then does it start to speak to you.”

Natacha has mixed Arabic scales into the jazz, employing Samy Bishai, who plays the Arabic violin, as the arranger.

“It’s tricky because Arabic music is modal. You stay in one scale and may touch on another, but there’s no mad changes like in bebop,” she explains. “To take [jazz] and find a space where Arabic music can be woven in, I don’t know if that’s been done before.”

Throughout her career, Natacha has been interested in blending together vastly different musical styles and genres.

She’s collaborated with several high-profile musicians across the spectrum, too: Irish singersongwriter Sinéad O'Connor, rock singer Peter Gabriel and violinist Nigel Kennedy among them. The result? Natacha’s work is a true triumph of multiculturalism.

Natacha is being supported by vocalist Randolph Matthews at Blackheath Halls this Saturday.

The concert is a chance to hear songs from her new album Strange Days, ahead of its release in September. Natacha is also performing at St Mary’s Music Hall in Walthamstow this week, and will be touring in the autumn following the release of her album.

eople in South London are being encouraged to get the Summer off to a great start by making a date to join Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life.

This year, for the first time, Cancer Research UK is inviting everyone in the area – women, men and children - to join the Race for Life.

There are events for people of all ages and abilities taking place on Blackheath Common on 30th June.

Brenda Scott Cancer Research UK’s Blackheath Event Manager, said: “Our Race for Life events are fun, colourful, emotional and uplifting. They help people with cancer by raising money for research, including clinical trials which give patients in London access to the latest treatments.

“You don’t have to be sporty to take part. You don’t need to train or compete against anyone else. All you need to do is go to the Race for Life website, pick an event, sign up and then have fun raising money in whatever way you like.”

Brenda continued: “The Race for Life is a powerful, inspirational movement which unites participants in South East London with people across London and the whole of the UK. “Taking part in our Race for Life events enables like-minded people to get together and remember loved ones lost to cancer or celebrate the lives of those who have survived. At the same time, they are helping to make a difference to people with cancer, right now.

She added: “Our Race for Life events have been women-only since they started, over 25 years ago. But we now feel the time is right to open them up so that everyone - women, men and children – has the chance to participate together.

“One in two people in the UK

will be diagnosed with cancer, at some point during their lifetime. Sadly, this means nearly everyone is touched by the disease, either directly or through a loved one or friend.

“To make a significant difference in the fight against cancer we need to harness as much energy and commitment as possible – so what better way than involving everyone in the community in our events.”

Brenda continued: “This Summer, we’re urging mums, dads, nans, grandpas, brothers, sisters, friends and workmates to show their support by joining the Race for Life. It’s a perfect example of everyday people doing an extraordinary thing – uniting in a common cause to beat cancer.”

Thanks to everyone who raises money, Cancer Research UK is able to fund research to fight 200 types of cancer. The good news is more people are surviving the disease than ever before. Cancer survival in the UK has doubled since the early 1970s and Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of that progress.

We all deserve a treat Davy’s Wine Vaults has been a Greenwich staple since 1960. A family-run business – the current chairman is James Davy, a fifth-generation member of the family, the business actually dates back to 1870, and has had various homes since then, writes Holly O'Mahony...

I’d been keen to visit Davys for some time and tried to book a table there last autumn, but found the restaurant and wine bar closed for refurbishment. As such, with news of it reopening mid March, I was even more curious to see it up and running under its new, smart guise.

The refurbishment of Davy’s Wine Vaults precedes a spate of celebrations taking place to mark the winery’s 150th anniversary next year. The renovation has seen giant geometric lamp shades hung from the restaurant ceiling, additional windows fitted to allow in more light, a new entrance added to the basement of the site, and what was once a cellar converted into a somewhat-dank-smellingbut-authentically-vault-esque seating area. Other beloved aspects of the restaurant’s interiors – wooden beams across

the ceiling and the wine barrel staves woven around the bar – have remained.

In spite of its new look and feel, the motive for booking a table at Davy’s is one of three things: the wine, the fish, and the fact there’s ample room both inside and out, for groups big and small, to dine.

In light of the former two rationales, we began our meal with a flute of Davy’s Celebration Champagne – one of two aperitifs on the menu.

Sniffing before sipping, I was momentarily confused by what I thought was the scent of paint. Thankfully, this swiftly revealed itself to be coming from the recently decorated wall on my left, not my glass. The champagne was, in fact, smooth, light and a crisp.

Starter wise, we decided to share the two fish-led options on the menu. The Chapel and Swan oak smoked salmon came with crispy, fried capers (a delight) and dottings of whipped wasabi crème fraîche. Together, the dish was fresh, smokey and able to hold its own without a bready supplement – thanks in large part to the thickness of the salmon.

The fishcake, though, could

have benefitted from, well, having more fish. The breadcrumbed and fried ball certainly looked the part, perched on a smear of mustard tartar sauce, but what lies inside is a lightly curried mush that seems more lentil (or perhaps potato) based than of the sea. The accompanying dollop of Newlyn crab salad – a creamy, coleslaw infused with said shellfish – was the highlight of the plate.

A main of Cornish ray wing proved the real star of the show.

The eye-poppingly large fish wing came lightly fried and flavoured with lemon butter (a must), tangy capers (clearly a core ingredient here), chopped cucumber and almonds. Kudos to our waitress who clearly sensed I was about to make a pig’s ear of picking the flesh off the bone, and promptly showed me how to debone the beast in one fell swoop. This melt-inthe-mouth dish was, in short, delicious. And made even more so by the fluffy chips I ordered as a side (although the salad or kale would arguably have been more appropriate). This was washed down with a golden-pink glass of Saint Sidoine rosé, both fruity and pleasingly dry.

Desserts were a marvel to

behold. A plate of sticky toffee baked Alaska came as a turret of marshmallow housing a cocoon of vanilla ice cream, itself perched on a biscuit base.

This was surrounded by a moat of mouthwatering toffee sauce, which single-handedly saved the pud from being style over substance. The dark chocolate and hazelnut truffle, meanwhile, was a rich, cylindrical brownie topped with chocolate mousse and glazed with a sticky chocolate sauce. This triple whammy was neutralised by a scattering of crunchy nuts and freshened up with a token spring of mint and tangy raspberries.

As desserts go, it wasn’t original, but hit the spot all the same.

With prices for mains climbing into the mid twenties (and cheaper options, such as fish and chips, still costing £15), Davy’s certainly isn’t cheap.

Nor are dishes served here as exciting as those found at upand-coming offerings near by.

That said, it’s a great place to come for a celebration. Book a large table in the Victoria room for private dining, a booth in the cooperage for a sense of drinking somewhere secret or the Office room – a closed off space with glass cabinets filled

with whiskies lining the walls – to mix business with pleasure.

Once settled, do begin your evening with a flute of Davy’s Celebration Champagne – we all deserve a treat now and then.

Rambert brings world-class dance to The Churchill Theatre

On Friday, May 3, one of the world’s leading independent dance companies, Rambert, is performing at the Churchill Theatre in Bromley.

Rambert was formed at the start of the 20th century and today is Britain’s longest standing dance company.

The company originally specialised in ballet, but today its focus is on contemporary dance, and is known for its diverse and international programming.

Like much of the work performed

by Rambert, the show coming to the Churchill Theatre is a triple bill – ‘PreSentient’, ‘Rouge’ and ‘In your rooms’ – showcasing the work of three choreographers with very different styles. The pieces share a common theme of artistic breakthroughs, based on the idea that every great artist has a ‘moment’.

by Rambert in 2002, marked the choreographer’s arrival as a major talent and won a Time Out Award for Best Choreography ‘PreSentient’ is being performed by 12 dancers to Steve Reich‘s Triple Quartet, played live, with Lucy Carter’s lighting and Ursula Bombshell’s costume design completing the aesthetics.

Hofesh Shechter’s ‘In Your Rooms’ is the second piece showing as part of the trio.

Hofesh, now an established artist, made his Sadler’s Wells debut with the piece in 2007, which is described by Rambert as ‘blending the personal and political in a work heart-stopping intensity.’

The piece is performed by a collective of dancers to a haunting score composed by Hofesh himself. The Observer described the piese as: “A performance of truly extraordinary beauty and

profundity.”

The triple bill concludes with Marion Motion’s ‘Rouge’. Unlike the former pieces showing, ‘Rouge’ is a new creation by the French choreographer, who has never worked with a contemporary company before now. Marion is best known in the UK for her work with singer-songwriter Christine and the Queens, for whom she choreographer the video for her breakthrough track Tilted. Between this video and Dua Lipa’s ‘IDGAF’, which she also worked on and for which her choreography was nominated for an MTV Video Music Award in 2018, Marion’s work has clocked up hundreds of millions of YouTube views.

Following the performance at the Churchill Theatre, the triple bill is showing at the prestigious Sadler’s Wells Theatre in Clerkenwell from May 14 – 18.

Rambert was formed by Marie Rambert, a Polish immigrant and

dancer who arrived in London when the First World War broke out. While continuing her own ballet studies and performing as a soloist, Marie opened a school of dancing in Bedford Gardens, Kensington, two years after arriving in the UK. Of the company, she is reported to have said that if the Royal Ballet was the National Gallery of dance, then her own company was the Tate.

The company has had several names over the years, including the Ballet Club and Ballet Rambert. In 2014, its name was changed from Rambert Dance Company to Rambert, which it is known as today. Rambert’s home is on London’s South Bank, in a building opened by the Queen in March 2014.

Rambert is an ever-expanding entity. In 2018, the company launched Rambert2, made up of dancers from around the world in the early stages of their career.

This secondary ensemble is currently touring around the UK as well as offering educational experiences and workshops to schools.

The company’s reach is growing too, with performances planned in France, Italy, Norway and Switzerland in the near future.

Earlier this year, Rambert made a special guest performance on the new BBC One series The Greatest Dancer, performing alongside singer Freya Ridings.

However big they grow, though, the company’s ethos remains in creating dance that stands out from the crowd, resonates with the 21st century and above all, really matters.

Catch the last of New Cross and Deptford free film fest

T

he eighth annual New Cross and Deptford Free Film Festival closes this Sunday, May 5, with a screening of John Landis’s 1983 comedy Trading Places.

The film is showing at Buster Mantis in Deptford at 5pm, and is followed by a closing party with DJ sets and dancing until 2am. The two-week festival began on Friday April 26, and since then has seen multi-purpose venues across Deptford and New Cross transformed into pop-up cinemas hosting free film screenings.

The Free Film Festival is one of several of its kind, most of which are held in neighbourhoods across south London. The festivals – the first of which took place in Peckham and Nunhead in 2010 – are run by a community of volunteers who are passionate about bringing people together to enjoy films they might not have seen elsewhere. Each festival is run by its own group of volunteers, but equipment, such as projectors, are shared between the festivals.

This year, the festival is closing with a screening of John Landis’s 1983 comedy Trading Places.

The film follows what happens when upper-class city banker Louis Winthorpe III (Dan Aykroyd) swaps lives with a homeless street hustler Billy Ray Valentine (Eddie Murphy), following a bet made by two powerful Wall Street sharks.

The film, written by Timothy Harris and Herschel Weingrod, has an impressive 86 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and is described by a representative of the festival as “a definitive 80s comedy classic”.

“Thirty-six years since its initial release, Trading Places continues to provide a comic and sardonically relevant reflection of the collision and coexistence between rich and poor – it could well have been set in London today,” they say.

Trading Places also stars Denholm Elliott as Coleman and Jamie Lee Curtis as Ophelia, who won the awards for Best Actor in a Supporting Role and Best Actress in a Supporting Role, respectively, at the 37th British Academy Film Awards. The movie was also nominated for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy at the 41st Golden Globe Awards.

Among the other films showing this week as part of the festival is Jason Reitman’s 2008 film Juno (May 3 at Juno Cafe, 7:30pm).

The film, starring Ellen Page in the title role, follows a teen confronted with an unplanned pregnancy, who takes it upon herself to choose a couple to adopt her baby. Ridley Scott’s 1991 revenge

NEWS FROM CHARLTON ATHLETIC COMMUNITY TRUST

Community 500 scheme continues to bring people together Primary school pupils from across Royal Greenwich and Bexley have been making the most of a free ticket allocation to attend Charlton Athletic home games.

A Year 1 pupil at St Paulinus School in Crayford, Sam made his first trip to The Valley with his mother Laura last October for Young Greenwich Day, one of Charlton Athletic Community Trust’s (CACT) themed matchdays.

The game against Coventry City, which promoted the youth service CACT delivers on behalf of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, was the six-year-old’s first ever Charlton match, and turned out to be the first of many.

Sam took part in a range of activities put on as part of Young Greenwich Day, including dancing and smoothie making.

He also got to meet Charlton star striker Lyle Taylor at the game, and this made him even more eager to return and support the Addicks.

The game saw Laura meet CACT’s Head of Education, Kate Gould, who told her about the Community 500 scheme.

The scheme sees CACT distribute 500 tickets provided by the club for each Charlton game to participants.

Sam and Laura spread the word, and 30 St Paulinus School classmates were all given tickets to watch Charlton beat Luton Town 3-1 in a key top of the table clash on 13 April. For many of the pupils, it was their first ever Charlton match.

Laura said: “We are so grateful that children from Year 1 of St Paulinus School in Crayford have been given the opportunity to be involved with CACT. It is incredibly important to get young people involved in these kinds of activities to show them what it is to be part of a community and to support their local football team.”

Kate Gould, CACT’s Head of Education, said: “It was a pleasure to give Laura and the children at St Paulinus School tickets to the Luton game.

It’s fantastic to see children excited about Charlton, and what a brilliant game they saw!

“The Community 500 scheme is a great way to allow young people to get involved with CACT and the club. It’s brilliant to see how it brings family and friends closer together.”
