SPOTLIGHT By Laura Burgoine

T

he UK’s best Beach Boys inspired band is bringing good vibrations to the Beaverwood club.

The two-set summer show summons the spirit of sun, surf, and the ‘60s with the seven-piece taking audiences right through the Beach Boys’ catalogue including hit singles Little Deuce Coupe, Barbara Ann, Fun Fun Fun, Good Vibrations, God Only Knows, Kokomo, and plenty more. Starting in 1999, the band was formed to appear on a television programme about American culture, hosted by Ann Robinson. “We had a band called Endless Summer and did pretty much the same line up,” lead guitarist George told the Weekender. “We initially formed to mime on a TV Show, Watchdog, and after we performed on that show we got a lot of interest from there,” he said. “We’re all professional musicians and when the tribute scene was born we jumped on the bandwagon. A couple of us are very obsessed with the Beach Boys; they’d definitely be in our top five!” There’s eight people in the band with six usually performing: Dave, Mark, John, Paul, Kevin, and George: all Londoners. “We’ve done quite a bit of TV, some tourism stuff, and we’ve played all the big venues,” George said. The Beached Boys have headlined for big bands, and performed abroad and at festivals. They’ve even been on the BBC Two quiz show Eggheads. “We sang and opened the show, and then went on to beat the Eggheads,” George said. In their travels, the band of Brits have met some of the original Beach Boys members. “We’ve played with a number of them when they’ve been here. They’re great,” George said. “Only three of the original members are still alive. The Brian Wilson band checked us out when they were over from California and Brian jumped on stage with us, which was quite spooky because in our show I’m supposed to be him!” The Beached Boys keep busy with ‘60s themed weekend concerts. “I tend to find you go to places and younger audiences say ‘Mum and Dad used to play all your records.’ If you’re a ‘60s band, you do a lot of ‘60s weekends. We’re lucky, we’re not pretentious, and we’ve got 40 singles of top hits to choose from, so you can easily fill a two hour show.” And they don’t have to bother with wigs and get-ups like other tribute bands. “Quite luckily no one knows what they look like,” George said. “We have Hawaiian shirts, and surf gear.” They’re working with a summer sound but that doesn’t stop the Beached Boys. “We play all year

round. Summer is busier but, you know, have guitar, will travel.” Saving the hardest question for last: best Beach Boys song? “My

favourite is Do It Again, which was the biggest hit in England, followed Good Vibrations.” The Beached Boys Summer

ETERNAL SUNSHINE The Royal Observatory is screening 2007 flick Sunshine as part of its monthly Silver Screen Science Fiction series.

The year is 2057. The Sun is dying and a brave crew are on a 150 million km journey to deliver a bomb to reignite it. It’s a long voyage fraught with danger and not all of it comes from outside the spacecraft. After the film, Royal Observatory astronomer Tom Kerss will take a look at the fact behind the fiction answering questions such as: can the sun really die, how close could we get to the sun, and how do we know so much about the inside of our star having never sent anything inside it? August 5, from 6pm-8:30pm, at the Planetarium and Astronomy Centre. Admission: £10/£8.50 concessions. www.rmg.co.uk

Al Gore via satellite at Greenwich Picturehouse Film fans and environmentalists have the chance to hear Al Gore in conversation at the Greenwich Picturehouse in a one-off broadcast event.

Ten years after his original Inconvenient Truth, Al Gore remains deeply committed to publicising the oncoming perils of climate change and, as this movie demonstrates, doing something practical about it. Taking over from original director Davis Guggenheim, directors Bonnie Cohen and Jon Shenk follow Gore as he travels

the globe tutoring eco-activists as well as demonstrating to his global warming-denying critics that his original, dour predictions are already proving correct with Miami Beach’s regular floods, and Hurricane Sandy putting Manhattan’s Ground Zero underwater. Footage of Barack Obama and Donald Trump’s efforts conversely to address and refute the fact of climate change are equally chilling, which is ironic considering that the fifteen hottest years on record have occurred since 2001. top quality produce is reflected in the taste. Duck Egg @POW provides an excellent breakfast and brunch under the guidance of Mustapha Ertan, and in the coming weeks he will be serving up authentic Thai food on selected evenings, so watch out for that.

P

eckham boy Mustapha Ertan calls himself a born and bred in south London Turkish-Cypriot cockney, and he specialises in providing “the best breakfast in Brixton.”

Mustapha takes great pride in his background and in his cooking, which are plus points, as he is the man behind Duck Egg, his brainchild that is currently based in the Prince of Wales. I was brunching with the Weekender’s Michelle G who has the impressive title of Print and Digital Consultant as well as an impressive knowledge of food. Before we began our midafternoon meal Mustapha gave us the rundown on how he sources all his produce to ensure he gets the best quality. His vegetables come from the oldest trader in Brixton Market, Terry, who has held out while all others were moved aside by change; and meats from the butcher who also survived the famous market’s controversial transition.

14 August 2 2017

The damage The free range duck eggs, with which Mustapha has cut out his own niche in SW9, come from Norfolk. While we chatted, a round of drinks was in order. Michelle went for a Rum and Ting, a powerful concoction that I thought could get rockets on the moon, and I had a VPA, a good pale ale with citrus notes. After a while we agreed that Mustapha would cook me a couple of dishes so I could sample a selection, and a Jerk Chicken Salad ‘with extra avocado’ for my colleague. The Prince of Wales is a big

pub. So big it has a nightclub upstairs, plus a secret bar and a roof terrace. So big it has a door in Brixton Road and a main entrance in Coldharbour Lane! It gets extremely busy at weekends but on this Wednesday afternoon it was quite calm. Our food arrived. The salad looked very chunky and very fresh, and a simple dressing of red wine vinegar and olive oil took it to another level. Michelle said the chicken could have been a little spicier so the Peckham boy promised to add a couple more Scotch Bonnets to the next

Jerk mix. My surprise dish was Eggs Benedict, with Smoked Bacon ('Smoked is better for flavour and for cooking’), and Eggs Royale, with Scottish Smoked Salmon. As I tucked in Mustapha was telling me how he makes the Hollandaise Sauce, and how he poaches the duck eggs in white wine vinegar, and the running commentary made the whole eating experience a little bit more special. And, of course, there is the ritual of cutting gently into the egg to let the yolk ooze out, which was a winner too. Using
