A haunted supper club and ghoulish ghost tour The chills and thrills of Halloween are not only for kids. At the Old Royal Naval College, grab a zombie cocktail and head below ground to the hidden chambers of Christopher Wren’s baroque buildings, where the spirits of scurvy-riddled sailors, ancient admirals and drowned mariners dwell. There, you’ll listen to spine-chilling stories of mischiefmaking, mud larking, misery and murder.

Those who make it out alive can toast their health over a two-course Halloween supper, also held in the college. Arrive in costume for the chance to win a prize.

Art of the future In North Greenwich’s new Design District, a meeting of minds and creativity is taking place. Audiovisual artist Ben Sheppee had joined forces with multimedia artist Shantell Martin to present an exhibition drawing on different practices, including augmented reality, animation, drawings and prints.

Called Side by Side, the exhibition is the artists’ first physical collaboration since they met in Tokyo in 2007. A highlight to look out for is ‘Bowie 1976’, a work comprising three NFTs [non-fungible tokens].

Three ghosts, a timeless moral and a very grand setting With its evocation of Christmas festivities, its trio of well-meaning ghosts and its message of repentance, it’s no wonder, really, that Charles Dickens’ 1843 novella A Christmas Carol remains the ultimate seasonal story almost 200 years after it was written. Completely timeless in its sentiments, it offers endless opportunities for adaptation. Here with a brand new production is children’s theatre company Goblin Theatre, who have designed a show specially for the Painted Hall at the Old Royal Naval College, writes Holly O’Mahony…

Featuring original music, a ceilidh, spooky ghosts and plenty of festive cheer, A Christmas Carol is being performed in-the-round to i==ntimate audiences of just 220 guests each night (and with only three weeks to see it, you’ll want to book your tickets soon). To complete the merriments, the Painted Hall Café is serving a selection of prettily decorated festive treats.

Holly O’Mahony speaks to Matt Borgatti, founder and creative producer of Goblin Theatre, to find out more…

Holly O’Mahony: Goblin Theatre’s A Christmas Carol has been in the pipeline for some time. How did the idea to stage a production of Charles Dickens’ famous ghost story come about?

Matt Borgatti: We started developing the show just before the first lockdown and since the pandemic changed a lot of plans, we continued to write and develop during the lockdowns, when theatres were closed. We even did a distanced workshop of it with a group of actor-musicians in December 2020, most of whom are now in the show.

HOM: You’re staging the show in the Old Royal Naval College’s ‘Baroque masterpiece’, the Painted Hall, which is a very atmospheric setting for the timeless tale.

Have you created the production with the Painted Hall in mind?

MB: The Painted Hall has been very much part of the creative development of the show. When we first visited it, it

was still closed due to the pandemic and being the only visitors surrounded by all the stunning paintings, it felt like we were in a room full of ghosts. So, without giving too much away, we’ve set the show in The Painted Hall as we imagine it might have been in Dickensian London, although we travel through time and space to past, present and future, it’s a place we keep returning to. In design and costumes, we really want it to feel like the characters could have just stepped out from the paintings and into the show.

HOM: What’s been your experience of working in the Painted Hall – an echoey space with high ceilings and so much to catch, or distract, the eye – compared to working in a traditional theatre?

MB: This show will be performed in the

main room of the Painted Hall. It’s a jawdropping space; as soon as you enter it feels like you are immersed in a different time and place. We want to take this feeling of being in a stunning room full of history and make it a key part of the audience’s experience. The atmosphere in the Painted Hall feels both festive and a little bit spooky, which is perfect for A Christmas Carol. We’ve written the music to push this feeling even further.

HOM: How would you describe the show’s music?

MB: It’s a folk-influenced, acoustic score using cellos, guitars, accordions as well as choral elements. It’s going to be amazing hearing that played live in this space.

HOM: As well as being sitespecific, is the show immersive at all? I’ve heard rumours of a ceilidh for Fezziwig’s party…

MB: Our composer Mary Erskine comes from a long line of Scottish ceilidh callers and performers, and we’ve got a couple of moments, both in Fezziwig’s party and at the end of the show, where we perform the barn dance known as Strip the Willow. Health and safety permitting, we’re hoping at the end people might join in for a dance!

HOM: Beyond the location, what are some of the standout traits of this

production of A Christmas Carol? And crucially, with young audiences in mind, how dark is your retelling of the tale?

MB: The live music is one of the standout traits of the production; all the performers play various instruments, sing and act without stopping for the whole show. It’s an amazing feat of energy and talent that you can’t help being swept up in. We wanted to create something that the whole family can enjoy and share in together, so there are spooky bits, but there’s also lots of funny bits – the original story has plenty of hilarious lines. It’s very festive and feels like a celebration, which is what we’ve needed after this difficult time.

HOM: Why do you think the story of A Christmas Carol remains so perennially popular and ripe for adaptation almost 200 years after it was first published?

MB: It’s a great story. It’s got ghosts, comedy, tragedy and brilliant characters. It’s also a really entertaining read; it’s so neatly and tightly plotted that it just rollicks along.

Local businesses shine at Best of Royal Greenwich Business Awards

On Friday, 22 October, the Royal Borough of Greenwich honoured the excellent entrepreneurship of businesses in the borough after a highly challenging year - in person!

The Best of Royal Greenwich Business Awards received over 235 applications, with hundreds of companies competing to showcase their skills and get a chance to win a £3,000 top prize marketing budget.

The Docklands Light Railway

Mary Mills I am very aware as I write these articles going up the Ravensbourne to Lewisham that I have been ignoring some very obvious infrastructure. We need to look at two railways - one is, obviously, the Docklands Light Railway. The other one is, or was, much older. It is ironic that there is much more to say about the older railway and there are several blogs and articles describing its route and looking for remains. On our part of the route there is a nature reserve – but that is on the Lewisham bank and I will tell you about it once I have turned round and started to go up the west bank on the way back to the Thames.

It is a very strange thing but it is quite difficult to find much out about the Docklands Light Railway and its route up Deptford Creek.

The official handbook says very little about what was known as the ‘Lewisham Extension’ and there is barely a mention in those histories of the Creek which I have access to – and I agree I don’t have copies of everything. (You need your own copy of source material these days with Lewisham Local History, I think, still closed and Greenwich barely existing). On the web there is the basic Wikipedia article which all the other sites seem to copy from.

So - the official handbook – in 63 pages all it says about the bit of line we are looking at is “the route is then taken onwards by a twisting viaduct largely located over the river Ravensbourne and the tidal section of Deptford Creek to an elevated station named Deptford Bridge constructed over the main A2 roadway. The valley

of the Ravensbourne then follows a direct way towards the Elverson Road station.” Elsewhere it says ‘the extension to Lewisham was achieved as a project controlled and specified under the needs of a financial return on investment for the concession holder”. And that is it! So now you know.

So: what can we find out from the net? from Wikipedia and elsewhere we discover that the “viaduct… crossed the serpentine Deptford Creek no fewer than five times’… it runs for a short stretch in the existing concrete channel of the River Ravensbourne... reversing 1960s canalisation’. On the political origins it says ‘in 1988 London Transport and the London Docklands Development Corporation produced “A Transport Strategy for Docklands” which recommended ‘a link is built to break the transport barrier of the River Thames’. The bill authorising the extension wasn’t debated until early 1992. The government wanted the rail

extension to be funded by a private company under a “build-operatetransfer” agreement, where the company builds the railway, operates it for a number of years and then hands it over to the government - the contract was not awarded until September 1996, and the cost had doubled to £200 million, and although the project was supposed to be privately financed’ the winner was a newly formed company, City Greenwich Lewisham Rail Link (CGL Rail), a consortium of John Mowlem, Hyder Investments, London Electricity and Mitsui and Co. The line was ceremonially opened on 22nd November 1999 by the then Deputy Prime Minister, John Prescott.” So that is the official story Throughout this period I was working for Docklands Forum which had monitored and commented on the DLR from the start. This included representing community bodies at public enquiries and achieving some changes. That wasn’t my job but I knew well the members of staff involved. My memory is that the extension was the idea of a joint working party between Greenwich and Lewisham planners – worked up, I think, by Lewisham Planning Department. The two boroughs were lobbying for it with enthusiasm. Later I attended numerous community meetings, on the Isle of Dogs in particular, where the extension would be on the agenda. I wish I had access to the Forum’s archive – last I heard it was locked up in a Deptford boiler house – but we will have produced all sorts of reports

on it. I can only quote one abiding memory of a meeting on the Isle of Dogs which was against the Lewisham extension “because we don’t want south Londoners on our railway”.

So the DLR winds its way up Deptford Creek from where it leaves Greenwich Station and beings to turn south. It cuts across an area which was once the site of tanks belonging to Greenwich sewage pumping station and crosses the Creek. It is supported on a pillar on the edge of what is shown on the maps as Raleigh Wharf. It crosses back over the Creek with two supporting pillars on the side of the Merryweather Place flats. It crosses back to the Lewisham side to run along the bank nearest the backs of buildings in Creek Street. It then goes back to the east bank and runs due south across what was Ravensbourne Wharf. It crosses Blackheath Road with Deptford Bridge Station above the centre of the road.

It then runs south parallel with the east bank of the Ravensbourne and eventually over the river itself. We are told that the river was altered and that the railway runs down the river bed. I can find no explanation, plans, assessment or anything else about this.

So the point these articles have reached at the end of Brookmill Park and the waterworks estate is more or less at Elverson Road station on the Docklands Light Railway.

Slightly down river of the Elverson Road Station is the point at which a bridge once took another railway across the river.

This other older railway was the Greenwich Park Line, which ran from a station on the site which is now the Ibis Hotel in Greenwich’s Stockwell Street. Skirting to the north of Lewisham town centre it crossed Lewisham Hill and joined the line to Nunhead and beyond.

It opened on this stretch between Blackheath Hill and Nunhead in 1871 and from Greenwich in 1888 and it closed in 1917 – and never really reopened. It was never a success.

There are considerable remains of the line in the area between Stockwell Street and Blackheath Hill to be followed and described in numerous blogs - I recommend 'Running Past' https://runner500. wordpress.com/tag/greenwich-park/ and also descriptions of the various stations on http://disused-stations. org.uk/b/blackheath_hill/index.shtml The line went under Blackheath Hill and I guess is still there. The tunnel was used as an air raid shelter in the Second World War and later as a factory. In September 2008 Subterranea Britannica, the underground research society’s journal had a look at it. Apparently there is a door into it within the God Bless Bakery in Plumbridge Street. There are still apparently rails in the floor.

Blackheath Hill Station was on the Lewisham side of the road and even I can remember buildings still there. It is now a housing development called Robinscroft Mews. From there the line carried on parallel to Lewisham Road, eventually cross it and www.weekender.co.uk

makes its way to the Ravensbourne through the back streets now largely covered by the Orchard Estate.

Inevitably the stretch of line between Blackheath Hill and the Ravensbourne is barely described. The various blogs and route descriptions I have found just skip over it. I have yet to see a single picture – although one is mentioned in some footnotes, it is not reproduced.

At the junction of Coldbath Street and Ravensbourne Place were two iron bridges which were later sold for scrap. Bits of viaduct remained in this area but everything was replaced by housing in 1959.

The line crossed the Ravensbourne on a brick bridge – and a picture of

that would be really interesting.

Today there is a foot crossing over the Ravensbourne close to where the line will have crossed.

It goes to almost the same point on the other bank as the railway.

I’m not going to tell you now what was on the west bank of the Ravensbourne in the way of railway remains. There is, as it happens, quite a bit there but I have written enough here for one article and the remains of the Greenwich Park Railway on the west bank can wait until I work back from Lewisham going north.

It will be very interesting and there is a mysterious church as well.

16 young people head to The Valley for Utilita Kids and Girls Cup launch

The Valley played host to the Utilita Kids and Girls Cup’s official launch on Wednesday evening.

by Karen Carney MBE and Jack Wilshere as 16 local school children from Ealdham Primary School took to the hallowed turf for a series of activities to unveil the competition, which will see four finals take place at the home of football.

“I really enjoyed being a part of the launch of the Utilita Kids and Girls Cup,” said Davison. “It was great to see the excitement the kids had for playing on the pitch at The Valley and to see their enthusiasm for the game.

“Everyone dreams of playing at Wembley, so for the winning teams to get to play there is very exciting.”

Bradley Marshall, Charlton Athletic Community Trust’s (CACT) Senior Football and Sports Development Officer, commented: “The kids really enjoyed themselves. They got a Charlton goodie bag on their way out, they got their kit on, got on the pitch, really felt like the VIPs as well as the VIPs that we had here. It was brilliant to see.

“We had Josh Davison, Karen Carney, Jack Wilshere and we also had Mary Bashford; they were getting involved with the kids,” he added. “They got involved in some of the drills that we were doing, some of the fun games that we were doing so I think the kids were really pleased with that, because obviously it’s not every day they get to come and train on the pitch, let alone train with Jack Wilshere.

“In a couple of weeks time we are going to be sending out some information to local schools about our kids cups, a girls cup and a mixed cup as well,” explained Marshall.

“Local schools can get involved, come and play at the training ground and then we’ll give out some awards and stuff for the winners and runnersup. And then they get to represent Charlton at a regional competition against other community clubs.”

RRS Sir David Attenborough comes to Greenwich The UK’s newest polar research ship, RRS Sir David Attenborough, is docking in Greenwich. The arrival of the all-important ship is being marked with a three-day festival, Ice Worlds, celebrating advancements in polar science, hosted by Royal Museums Greenwich (RMG) and the British Antarctic Survey. Among the line-up of family-friendly activities is the chance to meet real polar explorers and find out how robots including the ship’s infamously named Boaty McBoatface submersible work.

Holly O’Mahony: Tell us more about the events visitors will be able to get involved with as part of the Ice Worlds festival.

Emily Drabek Maunder: The Ice Worlds festival is an exciting opportunity for the public to interact with scientists from the British Antarctic Survey.

There will be 13 hands-on exhibits where the public can learn about polar science and climate change, talks delivered by scientists from the British Antarctic Survey, tours of the galleries

at the National Maritime Museum from curators, and a penguin parade for families taking place on Saturday.

HOM: Environmental science and technology are at the heart of the festival. What will visitors learn about these areas?

EDM: The festival is highlighting polar science and climate change, and showcasing the science that is being done on the RRS Sir David Attenborough. Some exhibits www.weekender.co.uk

showcase ancient Antarctic fossils of the animals and plants that lived in Antarctica when it was covered in a tropical rainforest millions of years ago. Visitors can see the robotic Boaty McBoatface up close and learn more about how robots are being used to explore the oceans, including the weird and wonderful ocean life found at the seafloor near volcanic vents. Another exhibit allows visitors to become ‘walrus detectives’, participating in a new citizen science project called Walrus from Space.

This project is helping to understand how wildlife populations are being affected by climate change by using satellites to track their populations.

HOM: The festival promises visitors a chance to find out what it’s like to work in the Arctic and Antarctic. Can you reveal any more about this?

EDM: Visitors will be able to learn about what it’s like to live in the Antarctic through public talks by Captain Will Whatley of the RRS Sir David Attenborough. They will also be able to explore equipment from a polar field camp including tents and clothes that are used to keep the scientists warm and comfortable when they are doing research in one of the most isolated places on Earth, particularly in temperatures that reach -50 degree Celsius.

HOM: Tell us more about the polar scientists and explorers taking part in the festival. Will these figures be present in a live or digital capacity?

EDM: Visitors will be able to meet polar scientists and explorers in both a digital and live capacity.

Speakers like Captain Will Whatley of the RRS Sir David Attenborough will be speaking to everyone digitally because he will need to be in isolation before setting off to the Antarctic to ensure he is healthy for the journey. However, British Antarctic Survey scientists will be present at the exhibition and delivering public talks throughout the festival.

HOM: Crucially, will visitors be able

to climb aboard the ship, or is it a case of admiring it from afar?

EDM: Since the ship is designed for research, visitors unfortunately won’t be able to come onboard, but they can admire the ship from afar.

However, visitors will be able to see Boaty McBoatface, one of the robotic boats used for scientific research, up close at the festival.

HOM: So, what’s likely to be the highlight, or highlights, of the Ice Worlds festival?

EDM: Being able to interact with the captivating and innovative science that is happening in one of the most mysterious and isolated regions of our planet. The polar regions are fascinating and they have gone from being tropical rainforests to some of the harshest and coldest deserts. I also hope that visitors will walk away realising that there is still a lot we don’t know about the Antarctic that we need to understand, including the link between the sea and the Earth’s climate. This link is crucial to knowing the full implications of our changing climate, not only on animal and plant life, but also to our future on this planet.

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Council of the Royal Borough of Greenwich (hereinafter referred to as “the Council”) has made the

above-mentioned Orders under sections 9 and 10 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, as amended. The Orders will come into operation

on 3rd November 2021.

2. The general effect of the Orders would be to:

a) introduce a motorcycle parking place, 8.4 metres in length, outside Nos. 67 and 69 Eltham High Street, replacing the existing disabled persons’ ‘blue badge’ parking place;

b) introduce a disabled persons’ ‘blue badge’ parking place, 6.6 metres in length, outside No. 71 Eltham High Street, replacing part of the shared use bay;

the expeditious, convenient and safe movement of traffic or for preserving or improving the amenities of the area through which any road

affected by the Orders extends, modify or suspend the Orders or any provision thereof.

4. The Council will consider in due course whether the provisions of the Orders should be continued in force indefinitely by means of

permanent Orders made under sections 6, 45, 46, 49 and 124 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. Any person may object to the

making of the permanent Orders for the purpose of such indefinite continuation, within a period of six months beginning with the date on

which the experimental Orders come into force or, if the Orders are varied by another Order or modified pursuant to section 10(2) of

that Act has not been complied with, that person may, within six weeks from the date on which the Orders were made, apply for that

purpose to the High Court.

6. Persons objecting to the Orders should be aware that in view of the Local Government (Access to Information) Act 1985, this Council would

be legally obliged to make any comments received in response to this Notice, open to public inspection.
