Brahms streamed live from Blackheath Halls While its concert hall remains dark, Blackheath Halls is determined to keep live performance alive, streaming Brahms’ popular Liebeslieder-Waltzer this Valentine’s Day. The concert is being introduced by artistic director of Leeds Lieder Dr Natasha Loges, and features performances from tenor Nicky Spence and award-winning soprano Mary Bevan. The piece is being sung in German with English subtitles and piano accompaniment by Joseph Middleton.

Each online planetarium show is presented by one of the observatory’s astronomers, and is a chance to learn all about the lives of stars and the space beyond our solar system. Suitable for ages 7+.

OUTing the past for LGBTQ+ History Month As part of LGBTQ+ History Month, the National Maritime Museum is hosting a national-wide, online festival, OUTing the Past, which takes the form of an evening of free talks and conversations. The focus of the event this year is on four core topics: the experience of non-western LGBTQIA+ communities, migration, the effects of empire and global activism. Speaking at this year’s event is Stonewall’s Lesbian Role Model of the Year Laila ElMetoui, poet Mandla Rae, human rights advocate David Ikpo, social anthropologist Jenny White and Zimbabwean activist Maggy Moyo.

An escape room game from Greenwich Theatre Sir Willoughby’s Challenge originally ran at Greenwich Theatre over the Christmas period as an online adventure to accompany the stage production of The Wolves Of Willoughby Chase.

Now, it’s got a life of its own. Using the play’s characters, the quest sees its audience-turnedgamers explore the mansion where cousins Bonnie and Sylvia live. From here, they must dodge the wicked Miss Slighcarp and sneak past the wolves in order to deliver a code to save a friend.

This escape room-style experience is aimed at ages six to 12, and can be played on Zoom by up to 12 households at any time.

Fresh-air shopping While lockdown is curtailing our movements once more, outdoor food markets continue to operate – and they make a pleasant alternative to queueing at the supermarket. Head to Blackheath this Sunday to take advantage of the weekly farmers’ market. Look out for seasonal specialities including carrots, parsnips, chard and oysters, plus a chance to pick up some flowers to surprise a loved one.

Meet the artist and game producer behind Greenwich Theatre’s upcoming virtual show Manimals “What is someone trying to say about themselves when they have a picture of a llama, or several foxes, or a tiger selfie, on their dating profile?”

Canada-born, UK-based artist Michelle Hudson is the mind behind Greenwich Theatre’s intriguing new virtual show Manimals. She’s also a successful game designer. Fusing together these vastly different skill sets, Michelle has created an interactive one-woman play that’s part online theatre, part gaming experience; one that plays out over Zoom and in an app designed by Michelle herself, writes Holly O’Mahony…

The subject matter of Manimals, Michelle’s first solo show, is one which baffles many single women (and most probably single men) using dating apps: profile pictures in which the poser is next to an exotic animal.

“I’d been single for a while, and was looking for ways to make online dating m o r e fun,” recalls

Michelle. “I noticed this trend, of guys posing with exotic animals in their dating profiles, and I found it really intriguing. What is someone trying to say about themselves when they have a single picture of a llama, or several foxes, or a tiger selfie, on their profile?”

Employing her skills as a game designer, Michelle made up a few ‘game rules’ to delve deeper into the trend. “I’d go on the apps to see whether I could find a new animal, for instance. But the point of being on a dating app is to date people, so I started going on dates with ‘manimals’ [men posing with animals] to find out more about them and why they chose these particular animals, and also to see whether one of those swipes might turn into something more,” she says.

“The game rules were all designed to hack my dating life and give myself more

opportunities to say ‘yes’. It was a crazy project, but it did the trick of keeping me motivated and I had a lot of good, bad, and interesting dates and connections along the way.”

Michelle believes that a lot of people feel they’re in the same boat when it comes to online dating – an experience she describes as frustrating, repetitive, and demoralising. “I thought a show that playfully explored online dating would really resonate with anyone who has ever used a dating app,” she says.

“It’s the kind of theatre that I like to see – both broadly applicable but also very deeply personal; I hope others will see themselves reflected in the show and that we can laugh and cringe together.”

Michelle has a business background and found immersive gaming – games that happen in the real world supported by mobile tech – was a niche she was particularly suited to. “It’s both very technical and hugely creative, and I found myself getting involved in all sides of a new game, whether that was managing a developer to write the code, making design decisions, or jumping in to perform the character work when we needed it,” she says.

Equally passionate about theatre, Michelle had been thinking about creating her own solo show for

some time. “When the pandemic closed down live events, it gave me the perfect opportunity to step right into that creative space and start making my own work.”

As a one-woman show centred around the relationships we build using technology, Manimals is in many ways the ideal play to produce during the pandemic. After all, the majority of theatre that’s been able to go ahead this year has been solo shows and self-recordings made by the actor at home. However, Michelle originally planned to perform it to a live audience rather than a virtual one.

“I started working on this play back in April when no one knew what was going to happen with live theatre,” she recalls. “It became clear really early on [during the pandemic] that Zoom was actually the perfect medium for a show about online dating, where your interactions with potential matches are already filtered through a screen.”

Still, Michelle hopes to one day be able to perform the show in a theatre in front of a live audience. “The Manimals mobile game would be part of that show,” she explains. “But I’d also love to incorporate livestreaming tech and other multimedia elements from the online version into that show.”

Working with her creative collaborator and director Flo O’Mahony, Michelle has created Manimals entirely from home, overcoming hurdles a theatremaker would normally have a whole team to help with.

“I’ve also become my own sound engineer, lighting technician, and videographer,” she laughs.

“Creating a new mobile game for the show has been a learning curve. I’m

collaborating with Stitch Media, an incredible interactive media studio based in Canada, and they’ve been fantastic at taking my very early prototypes and creating the app that the audience will play with.”

Manimals is being broadcast from Michelle’s flat in south-east London to three UK venues – Greenwich Theatre and Poplar Union in London, and The Place in Bedford – as well as the Talk is Free Theatre, a venue near her hometown in Canada. “Each venue is a great fit for Manimals for a different reason,” she says, commending Greenwich Theatre for its programming of new writing.

Michelle has enjoyed exploring the creative side of using Zoom and believes it’s down to theatremakers to work with the online tools they’ve got to create work while venues remain closed to live audiences.

“I think that’s exciting – to see what online live theatre can do to create that community feeling, where its limits are and where it can go further than traditional theatre,” she says, positively.

“Online theatre is groundbreaking and exciting. It’s not just Plan B while theatres are closed. The creative potential for bringing live work directly to an audience in their own homes is huge. I hope audiences see this brand new form as something that is just as creatively thrilling as more traditional theatre.”

The National Maritime Museum is bringing to life Chinese New Year online For the past 20 years, Chinese New Year has been marked with fanfare at the National Maritime Museum. Ordinarily, the venue hosts a full day of colourful craft workshops, vibrant performances and family-friendly storytelling to celebrate the occasion. While this year’s festivities have been shifted online, rest assured they’ll be no less magical, writes Holly O’Mahony…

The Year of the Ox officially begins on Friday February 12, but the National Maritime Museum is hosting the occasion on the following day, Saturday 13, to allow more participants to get involved outside of work and home-schooling hours.

All accessible on the museum’s website and Facebook page, the line-up is bountiful. Among the highlights is deaf storyteller Deppa Shastri bringing to life the story of the legendary monster Nian; a character announcer with Cutty Sark chef and Chinese lascar James

Robson; and a 10-minute video introduction into Tai Chi and Qigong, two traditional forms of martial arts, with specialist Chew Yeen Lawes.

We spoke to Katie Cassels, RMG’s families and young people manager, to find out more about what’s in store and how to get involved from home.

Holly O’Mahony: The National Maritime Museum has organised Chinese New Year celebrations for 20 years now, but this is the first year the festivities are being held online. How have you

gone about organising them?

Katie Cassels: Whilst it is a shame that this milestone cannot be celebrated on site, we are thrilled to be able to share the celebration online, reaching people in their homes and providing some joy during lockdown. The relationships we’ve built up over the last 20 years have made transitioning the celebration to the online sphere much easier.

For instance, Newham Chinese Association, who last year taught visitors to the museum how to play

mahjong, have kindly produced a blog for the website, introducing the different traditions of the celebration. Working digitally has also provided us with the opportunity to work with new partners, for instance Global Fusion Music & Arts, who will be bringing Tai Chi and Qigong to our audiences.

HOM: Can we expect to see any familiar events returning?

If so, which ones?

KC: Family craft activities, a tradition of Chinese New Year celebrations the world over and a usual highlight of the on-site event, will take the form of two activities families can get involved with from home. For those looking for a hands-on craft, they can try their hand at paper folding to create a traditional hongbao (red envelope), or create a lucky fish poster to decorate their home.

objects within the collection that have Chinese connections. This year, audiences can explore the collection online and, with a digital tour, we are able to highlight objects that aren’t currently on display, opening the museum collections up in a way an on-site tour wouldn’t be able to.

Our curator of world cultures has put together an online trail of objects with Chinese connections.

Alternatively, audiences can take a peek into the Prince Philip Maritime Collection Centre and discover Chinese swords in the collection.

There’s also the performance element to the festivities, which usually draw large crowds. Whilst we cannot do live performances this year, we will be showing a performance of the popular Lion Dance on RMG’s Facebook page (on February 13, 4pm).

The bright colours of the lions, the incredible movements and the striking music really lifts the mood and feels like a moment of togetherness with communities celebrating the Lunar New Year across the world.

The pitch, which is a Covid-secure sight, is available for free to eligible families living in Royal Greenwich.

Families are able to book a 2-hour slot which gives them access to sole use of the astroturf pitch and can also request use of CACT’s sporting equipment, all of which will be sanitised before and after each use.

CACT staff will be on-site at all times to ensure the project runs as smoothly as possible for families who choose to attend.

Greenwich music and dance conservatoire Trinity Laban has partnered with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO) to launch the ‘NYJOTrinity Laban Award’ as part of a shared bid to ensure diversity, inclusivity and accessibility within jazz education. Funded by the NYJO, the award supports one talented young musician studying jazz at Trinity Laban. The first recipient of the award has been announced as first year jazz student David Ijishakin, writes Holly O’Mahony…

At just 19, the singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from south London has already made a name for himself in the jazz music scene. He has also released two singles: a debut ‘I Want You’ and hotly-anticipated follow-up track ‘Burning Fire’.

The gas works at Ordnance Wharf

Mary Mills As we continue round the riverside path, past Ordnance draw dock and the site of the new hotel we come to the edge of the East Greenwich gas works complex. Here the riverside path along the river wall stopped and was closed for the hundred or so years while the gas works was functioning. It closed in the 1880s then was rebuilt and reopened for the millennium.

This was not a simple gas works but a collection of organisations involved in the processing of coal from the Durham coalfield part which was to make ‘town gas’ for sale to the public. The first site we pass was known as Ordnance Wharf and it was a huge and complicated factory processing coal tar. It was built on the site of the Blakely Ordnance Factory – hence the name of ‘Ordnance Wharf’ and it is said that when contractors moved in to clear and rebuild the site that it was littered with half made ‘great guns’. They also took over and included in the works the site of Forbes Abbot chemical factory – more about that later.

To be honest there must be hundreds of men out there who worked at Ordnance Wharf and who could tell you far more about the works than I ever could. Faye, whose husband had been a manager at Ordnance Wharf, gave me a bundle of literally hundreds of pictures of the site and I will base a lot of what I have to say on those – and thank you to Faye.

Tar was collected here, processed and sold. The pictures show men standing on heaps of the stuff but also show the ‘pitch bed’. A sort of lake of solidified coal tar. It looks horrific and although workers are shown wearing face masks the whole atmosphere seems filthy and dangerous. After

the Great War the gas company had bought three huge tanks used by the Admiralty for oil storage at Hull and each holding about a million gallons.

These tanks were sunk into the ground at Ordnance Wharf to store creosote. I think I remember in the 1990s Michael Heseltine making a speech at east Greenwich about the horrors of the gas works and the need for remediation.

He mentioned these tanks, sunk below his feet, as some of the worst features of the site for pollution.

Many of the photographs show the works in a state of semi dereliction – much of this down to wartime damage.

In particular there are pictures of the jetty – now to be used for the posh new hotel – it is a much smaller and a less distinctive structure than the huge jetty for the main works which is now the site of the clipper pier. The Ordnance Wharf jetty had on it a structure called the Temperley Transporter and there are several pictures of it collapsed in ruins after a storm. The Meridian Line briefly touches the edge of the Peninsula here and there are pictures of a broken and derelict sign for it. There are also pictures of specialist installations for various processes and also some scruffy sheds. The dry dock was also still in place, but used as a water reservoir.

There are lots of pictures of puddles of tar – and I am reminded that a friend told me once that chemists in the Ordnance Wharf lab could distinguish 96 grades of tar by sight. Those puddles look pretty boring and all identical - but when I showed them to a group of gas engineers in Manchester some years ago they all got very excited ‘Cor, look at that!!!’ ... ‘’Seen this one, that’s amazing’. (Whatever turns you on!).

Another group of pictures are all about road vehicles, many of them are photographed up on Blackheath and presumably are to demonstrate what the company could offer in the way of tankers and ways of laying tar on the road to local transport engineers.

Some of them have quite complicated grading apparatus fixed on the back.

Some years ago one of these was reproduced in Historic Gas Times (oh yes, that publication exists!) where Brian described the calibration and testing of road tar sprayers when tar from the larger gasworks’ own tarplants was a major source. The South Met Gas Co. tanker included with the article had been fitted with “channels to collect the spray.. ... the aim was to obtain an even spread of tar and the channels fitted for test purposes“.

Brian also told us “ Gas works coal tar was also sold to the public who came to the works gate, with perhaps a gallon can and this could be filled for about 2/- in the 1950’s. It was used for treating fences and timber garden sheds...” My own father had a story about trying to carry a bucket of gas works tar home on the crossbar of his bike... the result involved the Mayor’s car.

I was going to finish by returning to Forbes Abbott whose site South Met. Gas took over for Ordnance Wharf.

They were a chemical manufacturing company originally based at Iceland Wharf in Hackney wick. It was in Iceland Road – but Forbes Abbott moved out a century and a half or so before the regenerators moved in.

James Forbes had an 1867 patent for sulphate of ammonia – which at that time probably meant he was processing waste ammonia from various gas works. Forbes Abbott moved onto to specialise in ammonia based products and then tar. They then moved to east Greenwich.

Now, I am very grateful to Debs who has done a lot of research on some chemical company personalities in Middlesbrough, some of whom came to Greenwich. They include a George Sadler Field who apparently managed Ordnance Wharf for 40 years in the Great War and later. They also include a Frederick Lennard who came to Greenwich. In 1883 he registered a patent for a continuous tar still but this patent was registered from an address in Shoreham, and it should be noted that Forbes Abbott had a branch in Shoreham, and at East Greenwich their new site was called Sussex Wharf.

There are various technical sites on the net which describe the Lennard still – called a ‘continuous pipe still’. This short description was sent to me and does it rather more succinctly: “The continuous production of residual products from bituminous materials by means of so-called pipe heaters or tube stills was invented in England by Frederic Lennard in 1891 and a few stills of this type were used there for distilling coal tar to briquette pitch and other tar materials.”

So east Greenwich had the first continuous pipe still for its tar in 1893 to be followed by Bristol tar works in 1898.

So – let’s fast forward. I talked above about the big pack of pictures I was given by Faye. One of them shows the Lennard still – all big and shiny in a photo which I suspect dated from the 1970s.

Some of the pictures were in a little bag and Faye told me that they had made up an exhibition when her husband and others got the old still working again as an experiment before it was destroyed.

This is to facilitate works by Thames Water who need to carry out water connection works.

2. The Order will come into operation on 22nd February 2021 and would continue to be valid for 18 months. However the works are expected to take one week. The duration of the Order can be extended with the approval of the Secretary of State for Transport.

3. The effect of the Order would be to temporarily remove the bus lane prohibitions between Thames Street and Welland Street.

4. Whilst the Order is in operation traffic will not be diverted. Prohibitions remain in force, pedestrians are not affected and vehicle access will be maintained wherever possible.

5. Nothing in this Notice will apply to anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or traffic warden, to emergency service vehicles, or to vehicles being used in connection with the works.

6. The restrictions described above will apply only during such times and to such extent as shall be indicated by traffic signs as prescribed by the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016.

Nominate an inspirational local woman International Women’s Day is celebrated across the world on 8 March each year, recognising women from all backgrounds and professions that have shaped and impacted our lives. There are so many women across the Royal Borough of Greenwich that have shown strength, ingenuity, and resilience – particularly through these difficult times – and as part of our International Women’s Day celebrations, we’ll be shining a light on some of them in a short film, on social media and in our publication Greenwich Info.

For the chance to be featured in our film, we will need to receive nominations by 9am on Friday 12 February. However, we’ll be accepting nominations until 9am on Monday 1 March 2021 for nominees to feature on our social media and in Greenwich Info. All nominations should include: •

Borough-wide charter commits to equality, diversity and inclusion Last week, Leader of the Council Cllr Danny Thorpe and Cabinet Member for Culture, Communities and Equalities Cllr Adel Khaireh, launched the borough’s first Equality and Equity Charter.

Launched during Race Equality Week, a UK-wide initiative aimed at addressing the barriers facing race equality in the workplace, the councillors became the first signatories of the charter which is just the beginning of our work to create a fairer, safer and accessible borough where everyone feels they belong.

Cllr Adel Khaireh said: “We’re launching this charter during Race Equality Week which has a specific focus on race equality in the workplace, but the principles of our charter encompass much more than working life and more than just race. We believe we can achieve equality and equity for everyone in Royal Greenwich regardless of race, gender, age, disability, sexual orientation or religion, and the launch of this charter is a step in the right direction. We are encouraging all residents and organisations to adopt the values and principles in the charter in everything that they do, so that we can unlock opportunities for all people across our borough.”

work we’re doing around the Council’s equality objectives which set out to tackle disadvantage and discrimination.

Cllr Danny Thorpe said: “The Black Lives Matter protests last year and the racial inequalities of the COVID-19 pandemic have highlighted the importance of our equalities work and making sure the values of the charter are embedded in everything we do. We are already embedding these principles in our efforts to fight COVID-19 with targeted outreach to communities across the borough who face the inequalities of the virus. We are working closely with community groups and faith leaders to encourage everyone to get tested and have the vaccine when it’s available to them.”

The charter was formed following workshops and consultation with organisations in February 2020 and a public consultation last summer which had more than 750 responses from residents and council staff as well as voluntary and community sector groups, businesses and partners of Royal Greenwich including BAME, LGBTQI+ and disability organisations.
