The aim is to support our colleagues at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust, working together to provide extra staff and services to our local hospitals, to relieve pressure on overstretched staff.

Queen Elizabeth Hospital is in the heart of our community. Many of our residents work there, many of us have been treated there and now, more than ever before, we need to come together as a community and support the whole hospital team.

As well as practical tasks, we are looking at other ways to relieve stress and make sure tired staff know they are appreciated. We’re asking local businesses and individuals to donate the certain items and services to staff who are working long hours, under intense physical and emotionally demanding circumstances, with many unable to go home because they need to protect their own family and friends from catching the virus:

“We hope to take some of the strain off families” – Royal Museums Greenwich on home learning and family fun Its museums remain closed, but Royal Museums Greenwich (RMG) now boasts a robust programme of weekly activities that kids of all ages can get involved with online. From an art club for teens to Friday playdates for little ones under 5, these weekly events offer structure for those unable to attend school and a chance to learn in a creative environment. Holly O’Mahony speaks to the organisers behind the programmes to find out more…

“Lockdown has been particularly hard on families as many juggle working from home, home-schooling and looking after their health and wellbeing,” says Katie Cassels, families and young people manager at RMG. “There has been demand for early years and special educational needs support in particular and RMG is attempting to meet these needs through regular online activity,” she says. “By providing weekly live activities, we hope to take some of the strain off families and provide an opportunity to explore new activities that can be continued or repeated offline, essentially providing families with a toolkit of engaging, fun and playful activities for the home.”

For those who can’t make the live classes, the RMG website hosts a range of learning activities featuring short videos and guides to getting creative at home, which can be done in your own time.

There’s also a number of curriculumlinked activities covering Key Stages one to four and beyond, for teachers and parents who are home-schooling.

Crucially, all activities are either free to enjoy or offered at a very reasonable price point (£2 – £4, or pay what you wish). “Many families are struggling as businesses furlough staff or make redundancies. Museums are a resource that is available to everyone and the National Maritime Museum aims to be a useful space and resource for our community,” says Katie. “By providing free or low cost activities for families, we are able to continue to provide access to museum-led, engaging learning.”

The online sessions proved popular, with sign-ups from around the world. “We saw a dip in numbers over summer as the first lockdown eased, but there has been increased interest since September.

We now have a regular audience who we have got to know virtually,” beams Sharondeep. In fact, Toddler Time has been so successful online, the team plans to continue offering a virtual iteration once the museum reopens.

For kids under five, there is also Play Fridays (11am, 12pm and 2pm). Under the guidance of Paul, Dani and Jenny, little ones embark on a different adventure each week, using song, dance and storytelling to help them build the tale. The sessions are designed to encourage young children to learn and play together – something crucially important in a time when schools are closed and we’re all so isolated.

“Play Fridays is led by early years specialists who draw on music, stories and sensory play to engage underfives and their adult with the National

Maritime Museum’s collection,” explains Katie. “The sessions are around 45 minutes long and provide multiple activities to engage children.”

A list of recommended but non-essential materials is sent out in advance to those who have signed up, so attendees can make the most of the session. “In this way, we are able to lead the adults to provide a multi-sensory experience for their child,” says Katie. “The facilitator will make different suggestions about how to use a material, such as water or a piece of fabric, providing the family with a toolkit of activities that they can use themselves, away from the session,” she adds. “This ensures our sessions are beneficial to families not just during the facilitated session, but beyond.”

For those with teens aged 13 – 16 who have a passion for art, there’s the Saturday Art & Design Club, which runs on a term-by-term basis from October to April and, in ‘normal times’ brings with it the opportunity for participants to visit central London galleries and have their work exhibited at Somerset House. Facilitated by a professional artist, classes are free and take place every Saturday from 10am – 1pm.

While attendees can’t currently explore the artworks at the National Maritime Museum and the Queen’s House as part of the sessions, the museum sends out a pack of resources and art materials to all who have signed up, to make engaging with the sessions both achievable and fair for all those participating from home.

“The group is led by artists who draw upon their own practice as well as those of other artists, to provide engaging weekly activities online,” clarifies Katie.

“An important part of the club is the opportunity for young people to meet others in their local community. This value translates into the online club as young people are provided space to discuss and feedback with their peers.”

Attendance is not mandatory on a week-by-week basis, but each weekly class brings new activities with it.

Should things return to some resemblance of normality any time soon, the team at RMG hopes to be able to offer all of its regular activities back on site once more. But a positive to have come out of the lockdowns is that the museums have gained a far wider audience for their resources. As a result, many of the brilliant learning materials will continue to exist online.

“Our programme of events across the year have seen a huge boost from being online,” confirms Katie. “Going forward we hope to offer a blended approach to events, ensuring a digital and on-site offer to allow all families to engage.”

Before the virus, RMG’s dedicated Toddler Time would see a gaggle of tots patrol the decks of Cutty Sark under the captainship of the vessel-cum-museum’s learning manager Sharondeep Jawanda. Since April, Sharondeep and her team have done their best to recreate the experience online, inviting toddlers and their parents to log in every Wednesday morning (10:30am –11am) for nautical singalongs, interactive storytelling and playtime.

“Having run the on-site session for five years, we know how much adults and children appreciate a space where they can come together to talk, play, and be engaged,” says Sharondeep, adding that it was for their regular on-site audience that she and the team were especially keen to develop a lockdown offering. “We saw that there was a need for early years activities and that

Judith’s tips on developing a brighter, calmer outlook…

1.

Be present in the now

There’s a great concept in Eckhart Tolle’s book The Power of Now, which is that rather than focusing on trying to change the past or other people, we should focus on the present moment. So, in the spirit of this, come into this moment, then focus on the next action you can take to move you forward using the resources you have available.

2. Know your patterns and create good, daily structures for yourself This is key to living a better life in general, but vital in times like these. The better you know yourself and the patterns you fall into that aren’t good for you, the more you can consciously create better structures for yourself. Morning walks, coffee breaks and even dancing to the radio at 3pm every day could all be part of your structure if they work for you.

3.

Breathe

When stressed, overwhelmed, feeling lost, you’ve probably stopped breathing properly – so take time to hit your reset button by placing your hand on your heart and taking three long, deep, re-centering, breaths (in through your nose, out through your mouth.) If I’m really stressed I turn the exhale into a hum. This physically, mentally, emotionally and energetically changes your state and brings you out of your overly-busy brain and into your body and the energy of now.

4.

Choose

Make a choice as to your next step. We always have a choice as to our behaviour, words and actions. If you make your next step a conscious choice then you are giving yourself power, putting yourself in control, and this helps to counteract the feeling of being in limbo and out of control.

Judith Quin is an intuitive energy worker and voice-vibration sound healer who ordinarily leads meditation sessions at Blackheath Complementary Health Centre. An early adopter of virtual classes, Judith has been running 30-minute Monday morning meditations at 7:30am since April, with regular attendees commending the sessions for offering an uplifting start to their week.

Here, Judith tells us why the third lockdown is likely to be the toughest yet, and how we can adopt a positive mindset to stay mentally strong.

Holly O’Mahony: Do you have any thoughts on why many people are talking about feeling more deflated locking down this third time around?

Judith Quin: I’m no psychologist, but the word ‘limbo’ comes to mind.

which adds to anxiety and lack of positivity. It’s been up and down for 10 months now and we’re all feeling a bit like yo-yos. Financial worry is one of the biggest stressors that exists and not knowing, not being able to make plans, creates a lack of hope. So I think many people are now tired of what feels like ‘being messed about’, lacking in trust, and feeling a bit hopeless, and this creates deflation.

HOM: How important is it to maintain a positive outlook at times like these, when the future looks so uncertain?

HOM: Does engaging with virtual activities – such as online meditation, yoga or a high-intensity fitness class – still have a positive effect on our mental outlook?

JQ: It’s vital. As someone who has depressive bouts myself, I know it can be hard, but finding the good things in life and reminding yourself of them is absolutely key. Rather than focusing on what’s going wrong, try to focus on what has been good for you or what you have done today, this week, this month or this year.

HOM: After a year that’s isolated us www.weekender.co.uk

JQ: It’s essential. Part of my downward spiral was because I was having a tech break, so wasn’t online at all. I hadn’t realised just how important it was for me to be interacting in my Facebook group and seeing friends for a chat on Zoom.

JQ: Virtual is the way it has to be right now. Fortunately, it’s actually possible to create really close connections and feel supported in an online space.

Whatever your online activity is, it gives you a sense of belonging and a ‘time and place’ to show up. With something that’s a regular activity, it also adds to your positive structures.

Whether you are meditating with me, doing exercise with Joe Wicks, quizzing with your friends or family, or learning a new skill, it gives you an achievable goal and a dopamine hit.

HOM: Do you have any advice for those who are curious but yet to take part in an online wellness class?

JQ: If you like something in ‘real’ life and still haven’t tried it online, give it a go. That which is calming, uplifting, or invigorating in real life has the same impact online. There are numerous yoga, meditation, coaching, exercise, even reiki sessions happening online.

No, it’s not the same, but it’s really so much better than you possibly expect. If you’re looking to start something new, it’s great because if you really want to hide you can turn your camera and mic off, building your confidence and deciding whether you like it or not before ‘showing up’.

HOM: Lastly, has your perspective

of what the virus is putting us through mentally changed over the last nine months?

JQ: I think we are all learning how to be more resilient. A positive is how much more focus both companies and individuals are placing on mental health awareness. I just hope that this continues once the pandemic passes.

Blackheath Halls needs our help

The venue stands a good eight miles from the glittering lights of London’s West End, but Blackheath Halls attracts names of central London prestige, with comedians including Jimmy Carr, Russell Kane and Suzi Ruffell all performing gigs there in recent years. It hosts authors, actors and opera stars too. And, as a wholly owned subsidiary of Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music & Dance, is an integral rehearsal and performance space for students of the college.

“We are continuing to fundraise for our general fund to keep us going by contributing to our fixed overheads through the crisis while we can’t open, and therefore can’t raise income from ticket sales, bar income or external hirings,” explains Emily Perry, development officer at Blackheath Halls. “We are asking people to make donations [and] have already received over £25,000 from generous individuals, many of whom have waived their right to refunds for cancelled performances, and many others have donated for the

first time because they understand that this is a really difficult time for organisations like the Halls,” she says.

Donations from the public are joining those awarded to the Halls by the Arts Council England Culture Recovery fund, support from Greenwich Council and a number of other funds. But, Emily stresses, with the arts sector so underfunded, the battle is continual.

“This year has been a terrible blow, and arts organisations around the country are more reliant than ever on support from individuals,” she says.

“Until the most recent lockdown we’ve been able to continue to host student rehearsals, which has enabled us to keep busy whilst we have been unable to welcome the general public into the building for live performances.”

With the latest lockdown, these rehearsals have also been suspended.

In the absence of live gigs, shows and talks over the past 12 months, many

of us have realised just how precious our arts venues are to our lives and leisure time. “I had understood that in principle, but now I really appreciate first-hand the impact that our organisation has on people’s wellbeing and mental health,” agrees Emily, adding that it is the engagement of the public and community fundraising group Friends of Blackheath Halls that make the venue so special.

There have been breakthrough moments and glimmers of hope for live performance this year – between July and October, and briefly in December, venues were allowed to reopen to the public. During that time, the Halls hosted a number of live events in the form of solo performances delivered to a reduced, socially-distanced audience.

It’s flagship project, the communitybased Blackheath Halls Opera, was unable to go ahead (too many participants for social distancing and not enough time for rehearsals following the

Blackheath Halls is one of the oldest entertainment venues in London, providing the public with cultural performances since the 1890s. Without ticket sales and bar revenue generated from footfall, the past year has put huge financial strains on the venue, and while it’s not facing threat of closure imminently, it’s appealing to the public for donations to ensure it can continue to offer a strong programme of comedy, music, movies, literary events and theatre when it eventually reopens its doors, writes Holly O’Mahony… lockdown, presumably), but in its place came a large-scale, 40-minute opera film, A Journey Through Rake’s Progress (available on the venue’s website), led by opera producer Rose Ballantyne, director James Hurley and musical director Christopher Stark, which Emily describes as a real highlight of the last year.

The first lockdown saw the venue host a series of regular catch ups online in which members of the public could log onto Zoom and see a friendly face. The Zoom socials have returned this January under the new name ‘Culture Catch Ups’, and with a more specific focus of discussing culture.

“During this particularly gloomy January we will be online every Wednesday from 11am to 12pm,” confirms Emily.

“As culture-lovers, we may well have the same films, TV shows, books, opera performances or theatre shows to discuss. Or you may be looking for recommendations for new cultural experiences to sample,” she says. “Either

way, we’d love to share a tea break with you, so please join us. We know that it is a really challenging time for everyone, but we will get through it together!”

There’s light at the end of the tunnel... but, for now, embrace lockdown life Once again the UK is living under tough but necessary restrictions as we battle COVID-19. Vaccines offer us hope and a way out but, until then, we must all play our part in together beating the virus. Life in lockdown is undoubtedly different. But, embrace it, and it can offer new opportunities.

There is light at the end of the tunnel with rules regularly reviewed and the vaccination programme being rolled out apace.

But for now we are in this together, all having a vital part to play.

More exercise, DIY and daily routine have helped couple cope Husband and wife Tim and Angela Hoe (right) have embraced life in lockdown.

The Yorkshire couple has exercised more, completed DIY jobs around the house and garden and become wellread.

“Like everyone else, our world has completely changed,” said Angela.

“Work has stopped, usual places we

visited closed, and we are not allowed to visit friends and family.

“All our shopping is supermarket click-andcollect or from our local independents and farm shop.”

They have two adult children. Daughter Charlotte lives with her

partner nearby while son Lewis lives with his wife Lucy and two children Harry, aged six, and Lily, 18 months, in Bournemouth. Angela has not seen them or her parents, who also live in Yorkshire, for ten months.

The couple love to exercise

and have continued to do so within updated rules.

“With gyms closing, it was a case of keeping ourselves fit with running, biking and YouTube yoga and fitness classes online. Reading and crosswords have also filled our days,” confirmed Angela.

“The mobile library has provided a fantastic service allowing us to choose and order books online and

collect locally. Danielle Steel has been a particular favourite for me while my husband has continued with his love of Dickens, Steinbeck and Hemingway.”

Despite not visiting family, they have kept in touch. “FaceTime calling has become a regular occurrence with calls to our grandchildren and listening to our grandson read stories from his school book.”

History

The Point Wharf traders Mary Mills I am aware that as I work round the Peninsula riverside I am missing many firms that I know a bit about but not enough to do a whole article on. I thought this week I could catch up with some of them – short but interesting. And all of them on Point Wharf.

First off - The North Pole Ice Co. ‘North Pole’ is a common name for ice companies for obvious reasons – a glance at the net will reveal several still in business. Ice was stored in specially dug ‘ice houses’ at big posh homes to keep for cold summer drinks and so on – and there are several in our area. There is a really good one at High Elms outside Farnborough. There were also companies who stored ice, often importing it from the Arctic, and then sold it to hotels and caterers. I would recommend anyone interested in this to visit the London Canal Museum at Kings Cross which is in what were the premises of Gatti, ice merchants. They have good displays on the subject and lots of information. https://www.canalmuseum.org.uk/ North Pole came to Greenwich in the late 19th century as a rival to Gatti with whom they were soon in litigation. They seem to have been a Danish company and opened a head quarters building in London at Broad Street and depot at Waterloo. The London Canal Museum web site has a very good description of work at the Waterloo Junction depot.

They had a new product – artificial ice - which didn’t come from the Arctic but was made daily in special machinery.

They made 200 tons a day and it was then delivered to the depot at Waterloo. So what did the posh chefs think of ‘artificial ice’? M. Elroy, chef, said that ‘when he was employed by the De Keyser’s Hotel .... with the ice supplied by the North Pole Ice Company he required a great deal more of it and he only used it for cutting into figures .. so he complained to the manager.’ So much for artificial ice then.

Then - Greig & Co. Seed Crushing mill. I must admit to a lot of ignorance and some confusion over this site, despite considerable help from a family member and researcher, who I would like to thank.

Greigs were on site a long time yet little seems to be known about them or what they did in their factory on Point Wharf.

They were on site from at least 1867 where they were said to have a ‘four box - press mill’ and that this was ‘leased by Stewart Brothers and Spencer in 1885.

Stewart Brothers had a seed crushing works and were one of the founding companies in the London & Rochester Barge Company. It is also said that from 1880 the company running the Greenwich works was the London Seed Crushing Co. My guess is that they were really all the same people. Greigs themselves seem to have been estate owners in Trinidad.

Around 1900 one of the family is described as ‘West India Merchant (Oil Miller) So what were the seeds and why did they crush them? Whatever they were they were crushed to get oil and I had therefore assumed that what was crushed was linseed or rapeseed. But then, why the Trinidad connection? The West Indies is not normally known as a source of flax or rape. The connection might be with sugar – but sugar comes as cane or beet, neither of which can be described as ‘seeds’. The solution might be that what was crushed were coconuts. Although I would hardly describe them as ‘seeds’ either but that is what I supposed they are technically! In 1895 there was a fire in the ‘coconut store’ at Greenwich which rather confirms that suspicion.

The Greig name seems to have used for the until the 1930s when it was associated with the Poyle Mill Co. But in fact the Greenwich site had been taken over in 1900 - by asbestos.

So - Bell’s Asbestos. The final one of these three factories at Point Wharf is the one I have been trying to avoid mentioning for years. Dishonestly, I deliberately didn’t mention it in either ‘Greenwich Marsh’ in 1998 or ‘Innovations’ some years later. I thought given the hoo haa on pollution in 2000 that mentioning it might be a step too far and just add to all the bad thing being said in the press about Greenwich and the Dome. Perhaps it could be raised later.

Bells Asbestos dated from 1859 as John Bell and Son who made asbestos products for use in steam engines and electric machines. They appear to have begun in Southwark Street in the Borough where their imposing 1890s headquarters building still stands, incredibly not listed.

It was designed by T. M. Lockwood. Over the main door is a cement plaque with a bell-buoy motif along with cherubs and shells and much else. The company relied on sources of crysotile asbestos from Canada which was processed into a range of artefacts in Southwark.

The Greenwich factory was set up in the old Greig oil mill and I have no record or any real ides what went on there except that presumably they continued to make the same items.

All three of these factories were important long lasting works but we know very little about them. There were of course others in this area which was equally obscure – for instance I might mention Flower and Everett who had a mud shoot on the Isle of Dogs and a depot here in Greenwich.

They became a limited company in 1888 and 1905 there were additions to buildings and plant at the Greenwich factory – after which the company anticipated a larger manufacturing capacity ‘adding to the prosperity of the business’. Meanwhile the company cricket team was winning matches against other locals - West rent Wanderers,

In 1910 amalgamated with the United Asbestos based and in 1927 the company was sold to Turner & Newell who moved to Erith. The Greenwich factory seems to have closed in 1925 and it moved to United’s Harefield works. This area is well worth a visit and some remains of the works are there if you know where to look. What you will see is a leafy canal side village rather than ‘The Way to Dusty Death’ – which is the title of a book about the company.

As we walk along the Peninsula riverside we come to the Ordnance Draw Dock which is in effect the dividing line between the area of old industrial Greenwich and the Dome estate – and Knight Dragon.

as compensation to watermen who had lost access to much of the peninsula riverside – late 19th century planning gain. It is now difficult to access from the road with forbidding notices everywhere and an air of being private –it is , of course, a public right of way provided for watermen who need to bring stuff ashore. I now can’t find a Kent based river interest website where enthusiasts were looking at river access points. They had found this draw dock and were clearly shocked. They asked how potential users could get access and use it for the purpose it was intended for. They couldn’t understand why there wasn’t a major campaign in Greenwich to open it up and make clear its use for the public.

Alongside the draw dock it is one of the foot entrances to the Blackwall Tunnel.

Once there were steps where you could walk down to the tunnel and keep on walking over to Poplar. Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) is looking for runners to take part in this year’s Official Big Half on Sunday 25 April.

By taking part in the Big Half and fundraising for CACT, vital funds will be raised for their life-changing work supporting the most vulnerable in the community.

Mahala Debnam became a participant on CACT’s Early Intervention in Psychosis programme in 2017.

The programme, run in partnership with the Kent and Medway Early Intervention Service in West Kent, supports people with their psychosis recovery involving sport and physical activities and culture and leisure visits.

Mahala lacked confidence and was struggling with her mental health when she first started the programme, however now says “without the CACT programme, I would not have been where I am today with my mental health recovery.”

As her confidence improved throughout her time on the programme, Mahala describes one activity as a “turning point” in her journey.

“One of the things we did do was a zip wire flight over the Eden Project globes. This was very much a turning point in my mental health due to being able

to overcome my fear and anxiety as a whole.”

CACT is looking for runners to take part in aid of CACT so that people like Mahala can continue to be supported.

Lorna Taylor, CACT’s Head of Fundraising & Communications, said: “The Big Half is always a great event and while things might be different this year, we’re still looking forward to cheering on our runners.

“Many people have decided to take up running as a hobby due to gyms being closed, so the Big Half is a great way to challenge yourself and support a good cause!

“It’s important we can continue to support people in our community like Mahala. We’re very grateful to everyone who donates and supports our work.”

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Council of the Royal Borough of Greenwich intends to make an Order to accommodate carriageway resurfacing works on Pettman Crescent under Section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.

The effect of the Order would be to temporarily prohibit all vehicles from entering, exiting, proceeding or waiting (including waiting for the purposes of loading or unloading) in Pettman Crescent at its junction with Western Way. 3. The above restrictions would only apply at such times and to such extent as shall be indicated by the placing or covering of the appropriate traffic signs.

4. Whilst the closure is in operation, vehicular access to properties affected by these works would be maintained wherever possible subject to the extent and operations of the works. The alternative route for vehicular traffic will be maintained via the north-eastbound carriageway of Western Way; the outer north-eastbound carriageway of Western Way at the junction with Battery Road and the south-westbound carriageway of Western Way. 5. The Order would come into force on 28th January 2021 and works are expected to last a maximum of 4 days. However the Order will remain in force for 18 months to be re-introduced should further works be required.
