Canary Wharf is twinkling with designled light installations editor

The12-week event is a chance to browse nine new lightfocused spectacles, each designed by UK artists. The collection replaces the district’s annual Winter Lights Festival which, due to the sheer scale of the event which attracts 400,000 visitors each year, has been postponed for health and safety reasons.

Spin, glide and twirl on the Queen’s House ice rink Set against the regal backdrop of The Queen’s House – a UNESCO World Heritage site – the Queen’s House ice rink offers the chance to glide, spin and twirl while enjoying views of both the landmark house and nearby Greenwich Park. Despite the location’s obvious charms, this will only be the second year of the ice rink, which launched in 2019 becoming the only seasonal ice rink south of the river in London. Thanks to it being a) outdoors and b) easy to manage in terms of social distancing, the ice rink is one of few festive attractions given the green light to go ahead this year.

One-woman play explores the life of Virginia Woolf Classical singer and actor Lucy Stevens comes to Blackheath Halls with a one-woman play: Virginia Woolf: Killing the Angel. Using music and song from contemporary female composers to help tell the story, plus excerpts of Woolf’s own writing, Stevens delves into the author’s troubled childhood and her views on literature, Bloomsbury and the challenges women face as artists. Live theatre returns to Greenwich with The Wolves of Willoughby Chase Audiences are invited back inside Greenwich Theatre this Christmas to see director James Haddrell’s production of Russ Tunney’s The Wolves of Willoughby Chase, itself an adaptation of Joan Aiken’s 1962 beloved children’s novel. Suitable for little ones aged upwards of six, the play tells the story of two cousins, Bonnie and Sylvia who, with the help of their friend Simon the Gooseboy, must fend off fierce wolves and defeat their cruel governess Miss Slighcarp (played by Anthony Spargo). The production replaces the theatre’s annual pantomime which has been postponed because of the virus. Holly O’Mahony speaks to Greenwich Theatre director James Haddrell and actor Anthony Spargo to find out more…

Holly O’Mahony: James, how did the decision to postpone your annual pantomime and stage a production of The Wolves of Willoughby Chase come about?

James Haddrell: We had to postpone the annual pantomime as the economics of making a show that

big, regardless of whether it may or may not be able to go ahead, simply didn’t stack up. However, a visit to the theatre is part of the Christmas experience for so many people and I just couldn’t imagine Greenwich Theatre being dark for Christmas.

We knew we might end up where we are – able to open but having to

socially distance our audience – so I went looking for a script that could be produced in a different way to the pantomime but still contain a lot of the core elements: a great story to appeal to the whole family, live music, comedy and fake snow!

HOM: How has the creative process

been? Have you been able to hold rehearsals together in lockdown?

JH: Yes, it was a relief when the government confirmed that theatre rehearsals could go ahead under lockdown. They certainly qualify as work that can’t be conducted at home! Some of the most exciting moments have been finding creative ways to ensure that actors stay distanced from one another and don’t handle each other’s props.

My hope is that, once the curtain is raised, audiences won’t even realise that we’ve had to spread out the cast on stage and make unusual decisions about the way that props and set are used.

Anthony Spargo: Rehearsing during a lockdown is an experience I’ll certainly never forget! It’s wonderful yet utterly bizarre. It feels great to be working again, I think the entire cast feels very privileged to be working during this strange time.

After all, this is one of only a handful of Christmas shows that’s actually going ahead – a stark contrast to what is usually a very busy time for the industry. The rehearsal period has been extremely strange, most of it involves social distancing on stage and making sure that none of the actors touch anything but their own personal props coupled with the poor stage managers rushing around with antibacterial spray.

HOM: Anthony, you’re also a writer for the brilliant immersive theatre company Les Enfants Terribles.

Whether with them or through other means, have you worked on any virtual events during lockdown?

AS: During the first lockdown, Les Enfants Terribles created an online immersive show called The Prism inspired by the ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’ books. We put out an ad calling for creatives and actors to help and we were inundated with www.weekender.co.uk

THEATRE responses. The show involved over 100 creative collaborators from across the UK – including clowns, musicians, mimes, acrobats – a myriad of talent from across the entertainment industry. The piece explored lucid dreaming and the ability to control your dreams... and of course I joined in too – playing an evil mad scientist!

HOM: You often play the villain.

What attracts you to the darker roles?

AS: They’re so much fun. Simple as that. To me they’re always so much more complex and enjoyable to play than a romantic lead for example.

Plus... there’s a great tightrope walk between being ‘evil’ and being ridiculous. I love the madness and insanity that most villains have deep down and therefore comedy is always just around the corner.

HOM: James, do you have any plans in place to stream the show in the event of theatres having to close again over Christmas?

JH: Yes absolutely. Now that we are committed to making this show, and having brought together such a strong cast with a fantastic musician, we will present it whatever happens!

HOM: Accompanying the play is an interactive experience which

can be played by audiences at home. Was this created as a Covid-proof contingency plan?

And what can we expect from it?

JH: I am very aware that whilst a trip to the theatre is now allowed, and whilst we have put everything in place to make that trip safe, there will be some who are not ready to return to live events yet. We have also discovered, having presented so much online during lockdown, that we have developed an audience from much further afield than before.

If there is one positive from this year it is the way in which we have learnt to engage with audience members who would not normally be able to visit Greenwich, and we are keen to retain that new audience as theatres gradually reopen. The online experience has therefore been devised for those people – not as a contingency against cancelling the live show (which will be live streamed if London is moved into Tier 3), but to offer something additional. The experience will be presented on Zoom for up to 12 households at a time, and will take the form of an escape room for children, a series of puzzles and activities that they will go through with the cast in order to complete Sir Willoughby’s Challenge.

JH: This is a hugely playful adaptation of Joan Aiken’s original novel, with cast members playing several different characters, changing very quickly, making creative use of props, and taking turns to narrate the story. It really does show younger children how exciting stories can be. For older audience members there is a lot of comedy, a fantastic original score written and played live by David Haller, and a West End-quality cast. For the youngest members of the audience, we tell a story full of exciting twists and turns in a way that they could do at home with a handful of props and a lot of imagination.

AS: The Wolves of Willoughby Chase is a great tale. It’s an adventure story about good triumphing over evil – a message that we all need to cling onto at the moment!

HOM: Lastly, what do you hope young audience members take away from seeing the show?

Review: Exposure: Lives at Sea, National Maritime Museum Despite the fact oceans make up 70 per cent of the earth’s surface, the vast majority of us know little about what life at sea entails.

Major documentaries fronted by the likes of David Attenborough offer insight into pockets of underwater ecosystems, but the lives of working seafarers remain largely out of the public eye.

Curator Laura Boon is fascinated by the versatile experiences of those who spend months of the year marooned at sea, often out of contact with loved ones. Identifying six subjects working far apart from one another – both geographically and professionally – she has curated an exhibition, Exposure: Lives at Sea, featuring photographs taken by each while going about their daily lives.

Faith, hope and ‘confidence’ of slimmer Within three years Oxfordshire mum Faith Roots shed eight stone, dropping eight dress sizes.

She ditched sweets and cakes, put her diabetes in remission and found love.

Back in February 2017 she was out

of breath after a ten-minute walk.

Now she runs 5k a day.

The transformation started when she joined a Slimming World group. Faith (pictured before and after her transformation) explained: “I weighed 17st 13lbs.

In order to capture life at sea through an honest and authentic lens, a key criteria for Laura’s exhibition was that all subjects featured must be professional seafarers with a secondary passion for photography, rather than commercial photographers.

As a result, the images offer a window onto intimate moments between crew members, magical happenings beneath the water’s surface, the harsh realities of months spent living in tough conditions and the slivers of hope that slice through that darkness – all of which would have been invisible to the inauthentic eye.

As a whole, the exhibition is a Smörgåsbord of pictures taken around the world – from the colourful reefs of Mexico to the ice caps of Antarctica.

It spans a broad range of issues faced by those at sea, among them concerns for the environment, the global fishing trade, coping with loneliness and even being stranded on board a ship during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Fusing still images with explanatory text and videos of each photographer speaking about their work, the exhibition also fulfils Laura’s aim of exposing our oceans as vital sources of food, energy and transport used by people across the world. Between them, the pictures unravel the myriad roles our oceans play in supporting contemporary society, rather than simply existing as a mass substance of historical significance.

Commercial fisherman Corey Arnold brings the viewer up close to the ominous, angry Alaskan waves, then softens the scene by sharing with us a playful side to life on board his ship – captured through a handstand.

Peter Iain Campbell, a Scottish oil rig worker based in the North Sea, uses portraiture to reveal the intimate friendships forged between crew members aboard his oil rig, focusing on how starkly different and industrial their working environment is compared to life at home.

The pictures captured by Octavio Aburto could, without context, be enjoyed as colourful snapshots of marine life dancing above a blanket of fluorescent underwater plants that smother the reefs of Mexico. But while the National Geographic explorer and photographer has an eye for an arresting image, he uses his photography to remind the viewer of the fragile balance between ecotourism and healthy marine development.

It’s conservation photographer and underwater journalist Jennifer Adler who, through mesmerising pictures taking on professional dives, introduces the threat of climate change to the exhibition. Using a series of images of marine biologists observing and collecting specimens from the ocean’s bed, she exposes concerns over the health of our oceans

and what we can do to protect them.

Michał Krzysztofowicz, meanwhile, is among a brave minority of seafarers working as a data manager on the British Antarctic Survey’s Halley IV Research Station – one of the most remote workplaces on Earth. Left with supplies to last them through winter, thirteen researchers spend eight months of the year in isolation, a reality Krzysztofowicz documents through shots of snowy landscapes, personal photos of his teddy bear – a prop used by he and his partner to communicate while separated – and images capturing the jubilation of the crew when a helicopter arrives bearing supplies – a welcome interruption to their isolation.

Eye-opening and informative, Exposure: Lives at Sea achieves its aim of unveiling the humanity behind the working worlds of its subjects, while leaving the viewer with an awareness of just how many more stories – unfolding on different seas for different seafarers – there must be out there, waiting to be explored under another lens, another time.

The latest addition to the exhibition explores the reality of being a seafarer in the context of the year 2020 has turned out to be. Engineer and photographer Cezar Gabriel illustrates life on board his ship – which spent three additional months at sea, unable to dock in Brazil because of this Covid-19 pandemic – through a series of artistic and varied shots. In one particularly arresting photo, ‘Blowing of Steam’, Cezar captures from above crew members swimming together on a flooded deck. It’s an image that surmises the longing, waiting and drifting they were subjected to while stranded off the coast.

In the interview with CACT, Deji said: “I believe, first of all, black history is bigger than one month. It’s stuff that should be taught throughout a whole year and it should not be just being highlighted because October is the month that people want to talk about it. It should be something that can’t be explained in one month.

“We understand and appreciate

what they’re trying to do obviously but I believe now is a good time for people to begin to understand black culture. There’s a lot more stories to be told so the fact that they have designated one month to it, as much as it’s good, it’s something that is bigger than one month. It should be more than just black culture though.

“The world has so many races and there are so many things that everyone should be educated about through the whole syllabus.

“But I’m proud, I’m black and they’re teaching my history so I’m going to be proud.

“We need to learn different cultures if we are to be the welcoming country that I believe we are. But there’s a lot of stuff about black history that we don’t know ourselves so it’s important that we educate white people but also ourselves as well.”

He explained it is important that he uses his voice and cited Marcus Rashford as an inspiration.

He said: “Playing football every day is a blessing itself. I’m smiling and I’m happy a lot of the time because I’m blessed. A lot of people want to play football every day and never get the chance. But I am here and I believe it’s my duty to appreciate where I am.

Mary Mills Continuing to go down the riverside path on the west side of the Peninsula – and remembering what I wrote about tar some weeks ago – we get to a site used by John Bethel, near where the golf course is now. At the same time I am busy working up a lot of stuff round Deptford Creek and thinking about Creek Bridge – and the traffic! People are all talking about road closures, and I sort of remembered back in 2001 when Blackheath Hill was closed and all the heavy traffic was going over Creek Bridge. The road surface on the bridge was getting worn away and Greenwich traffic engineers were desperate to redo it.

Do I really remember it was worn down to a series of parallel metal slots? There is a reason why I am asking this, now...

In the 19th century there was a great deal of concern about methods of wood preservation. Wood was used for all sorts of applications out of doors for which and a method of preventing rot was important. Perhaps the most successful process was that pioneered in the 1830s by John Bethel, a barrister from Bristol. He was the brother of Richard Bethel who became Lord Chancellor.

for 'preserving animal and vegetable substances from decay'. Using an apparatus first designed in Paris, the dried timber was put on iron bogey frames, which were run into a strong wrought iron cylinder, and the air exhausted. The preservative was then forced in. Bethel issued licences and specified a number of preservatives including 'gas-tar.

He set up a tar distillery in Battersea in

1845, which may have been a creosote distillery; another tar works was opened on Bow Common in 1844 and, in the early 1850s, a Chemical Works near Blackwall Point on a site leased from Morden College. A range of workers housing was built adjacent to the East Greenwich site and the factory consisted of a wharf with buildings, tanks an Dan engine and boiler house, ere was a drying house with a chimney well as a office. This Blackwall Point works seems to have made a general range of chemicals. Bethel is listed in directories of the 1840s as an 'oil of vitriol manufacturer', implying a much wider range of chemical manufactures than merely wood preservation – and the work included vitriol chambers and also an alum maufacorin section .

Bethel seems to have experimented with a number of other coal gas related chemical processes. In the 1850s he offered the Chartered Gas Company a purification process but this proved 'unsatisfactory'. Methods of wood preservation by tar remained his main interest. He said, in 1851, that he had got the idea of preservation by tar from examination of an Egyptian mummy. In preservation with coal tar pitch as used 'in the Mediterranean', ammonia should be distilled away, because that would cause rot.

When Bethel died in the 1870s his wife, Louisa, continued, to own the East Greenwich works. Mrs. Bethel lived in Bath and the company was managed from an address in King William Street, City of London. The works seems to have specialised in tarred wooden blocks for paving and in the 1880s it became the Improved Wood Pavement Co. So – tarred road blocks became increasingly used. Wheeled vehicles – bicycles in particular need nice smooth road surface, whereas horses were happier with paved flags. Paving roads with wood blocks had started in the 1840s. Work done was by various companies, like the Metropolitan Paving Company or the General Wood Paving Company, in many central London streets and in various forms and layouts. It was then reported on and evaluated in the press. An article in the Journal of the great London Industrial Archaeology Society outlines the work William Haywood, engineer and surveyor to the City Commission of sewers and his work on evaluating the efficiency of these systems http:// www.glias.org.uk/journals/9-a.pdf There were also problems with different kinds of wood and eventually wood was imported from Australia where types of hardwood were discussed at length in the

One Australian paper reported “the Sheffield municipal authorities have... just decided to spend a sum of £110,000 on street-paving, only a very, very small proportion of which is to be of other than wood... a special committee has been appointed to consider the relative merits of hard and soft wood. The Sydney City Surveyor toured Britain in the 1880s to discuss the relative merits of red gun blue gum and turpentine for road paving.

Sherlock Holmes himself said you “can tell which streets are covered in... timber blocks... A few moments ago we were on a road covered with, if I am not mistaken, Jarrah wooden blocks from our antipodean colonies. Jarrah is an Aboriginal name for Eucalyptus marginata. This hardwood has a density ten times that of the Swedish deal that covers some of our other streets.” And down in Greenwich on the riverside walk Walter Besant noted the ‘pitch and tar works .. with their open-air manufacture and pungent odours, are very noticeable, whilst next to these is the yard and works of the Improved Wood Paving Company, who import the wood’.

So what has this to do with Creek Bridge?

I was researching the bridge and leant that it had to be rebuilt a an emergency after the Second World War because of bomb damage. I was fascinated to find www.weekender.co.uk

a paper where a number of very elite Civil Engineers were discussing the use of wood blocks to pave the new bridge. The engineers discussing this in the 1950s were very critical of it because of the weight and because of the slipperiness of the surface. So – I wondered were those blocks still there in 2001 and was that why the bridge was so worn – and what was it repaved with? If any Greenwich traffic engineers read this - I would love to know.

And a disclaimer. I am saying here that the wooden road blocks were made by a successor company to the Bethel

tar and wood preservation works – because that’s what the archive record seems to suggest. But I am aware that some authors on the subject have said that the company was set up and run by Mowlem – well, maybe.

Finally, I do have a wood block at home which I have at times taken to show the audience at lectures.

It is a much more complicated and structured item than you would think – not just a featureless block. I picked it up on a rubbish heap behind a pub in Kemsing. Not as far from the Greenwich riverside as you would think.

The Royal Borough of Greenwich intends to make this Order in exercise of powers under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. This is to facilitate works by Cobra Tm who need to carry out crane works.

The Order will come into operation on the 4TH January 2021 and would continue to be valid for 18 months. However the works are expected to take one day. The duration of the Order can be extended with the approval of the Secretary of State for Transport.

The effect of the Order would be to temporarily prohibit vehicles from entering, exiting, proceeding or waiting (including waiting for the purposes of loading or unloading) in, Ogilby Street at the junction of Frances Street.

News from the Royal Borough of Greenwich

Rooting for a greener future!

We are extremely happy to say that have reached our target of planting 2,022 trees more than a year ahead of schedule!

The Leader of the Council Cllr Danny Thorpe, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Economy and Skills Denise Scott-McDonald and Cabinet Member for Culture, Communities and Equalities Cllr Adel Khaireh, were helped by pupils from Halstow Primary School, to plant a deciduous conifer tree in the beautiful East Greenwich Pleasaunce. The 2,022nd tree is a special one; the dawn redwood tree is an endangered species that can reach at least 50 metres in height!

We place great importance on the borough’s trees; they play a vital role in helping keep the air clean and they add beauty to the borough’s green spaces and streets. Some have been in the borough for centuries! The oak tree opposite Shrewsbury Tumulus that is about 500 years old, and another oak in Beaconsfield Close, is thought to be around 400 years old.

Cllr Danny Thorpe, Leader of the Council, said: “The planting of trees across the borough is a key objective of the Council’s Carbon Neutral Plan. In 2016, we set a target of reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2030, 20 years ahead of the national target. Protecting and enhancing our green spaces will make us more resilient to climate change, as trees store carbon, and help contribute to carbon neutral living.”

Cllr Adel Khaireh, Cabinet Member for Culture, Communities and Equalities, said: “Meeting our target of planting 2,022 trees so far in advance is a clear symbol of the Council’s commitment to fighting the climate emergency. The act of planting a tree represents hope for the future and after this difficult year it’s important that we look ahead with positivity.”
