Scratch nights at Woolwich’s Tramshed Catch one of two scratch nights at the Tramshed in Woolwich this weekend. Two-steps, haggis and drams of whisky: a Burns Night Ceilidh on Cutty Sark Burns Night is once again being celebrated at Cutty Sark this year, with an evening of ceilidh dancing, scotch whisky and haggis, all in honour of Scots poet and lyricist Robert Burns. Given the iconic tea clipper is named after a character in Burns’ poem Tam O’Shanter, where better to spend the night celebrating, writes Holly O’Mahony…

Robert or ‘Rabbie’ Burns (1759 – 1796) is widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland. Today, Burns Night suppers and ceilidhs are held across the UK on what was Burns’ birthday. The tradition dates back to 1801, five years after Burns passed away, when friends gathered at the poet’s first home, Burns Cottage, to celebrate his life.

Burns Night celebrations at Cutty Sark begin at 6pm, when guests are invited to explore the 150-yearold ship after dark and enjoy a complementary dram of scotch whisky at the bar. A traditional Scottish bagpiper will herald the start of the night with a blast of highland sound at 7pm, followed by the superb Ceilidh Liberation Front kicking off the evening’s entertainment at 7:30pm.

A hot meal of haggis (or vegan haggis) with neeps and tatties is included in the ticket price, and will be available to enjoy in the ship’s café between 8:30pm and 9:30pm, during which time guests can also continue dancing. The evening will draw to a close at 10:20pm.

Chinese New Year: celebrate the Year of the Rat at the National Maritime Museum Celebrate Chinese New Year this Saturday (January 25) at the National Maritime Museum with a host of colourful craft workshops and family-friendly performances, all of which are free to enjoy, writes Holly O’Mahony…

This will be the Year of the Rat in Chinese culture and in honour of this, guests are invited to make their own origami rodent to take with them on their journey around the museum. Between the museum’s rooms, there are plenty of themed events to immerse yourselves in. You can explore the Traders gallery in the company of James Robson, a Chinese lascar (sailor) who served on locally moored tea clipper Cutty Sark. Here, you’ll learn all about the tea trade between Britain and China. While if you’re visiting with children, you might prefer to dip into a storytelling session with the Confucius Institute, who will be weaving a story for families of all ages in the Voyagers Gallery. Also on offer for smaller visitors is a series of ‘fireworks’ sessions, where they can create an explosion of colour using all sorts of sparkly materials.

Two classic ballets pirouette and plié onto the Churchill Theatre stage

Saint Petersburg Classic Ballet is bringing two of the world’s best-loved Russian ballets to the Churchill Theatre as part of a UK-wide tour. Under the direction of company founder and artistic director Marina Medvetskaya, the troupe are performing their production of Swan Lake on Wednesday 22 and Thursday 23, and The Nutcracker on Friday 24 and Saturday 25, writes Holly O’Mahony…

Both Swan Lake and The Nutcracker are performed to scores by the great Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and today are seen as Tchaikovsky’s ‘big story ballets’. The Nutcracker first graced the stage of Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg in 1892. The story itself is based on German author E.T.A Hoffmann’s 1816 tale The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, which follows what happens when a young girl’s favourite Christmas toy, a nutcracker, comes to life, whisking her away to a magical kingdom.

Swan Lake, meanwhile, is Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece.

The ballet was premiered by the Bolshoi Ballet of Russia in 1877, at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow.

It tells the story of doomed love between a bewitched swan princess, Odette, and Prince Siegfried, who’s unwittingly led to betray her by the evil sorcerer von Rothbart and his daughter Odile. Far more memorable than the ballet’s story, though, is its score, the theme from

which is likely to be familiar even to those who have little interest in classical music or dance.

Since the company was founded in 1996, Saint Petersburg Classic Ballet has made a name for itself for combining classical training and technique with the best-loved Russian ballets. The company’s productions are known for their exquisite dancing, outstanding soloists and for possessing an overall air of magic.

Before founding the company, Marina was Prima Ballerina of the Tbilisi State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre, where she danced the leading roles in both classical and contemporary works, and performed alongside acclaimed dancers Alexander Plesetsky and Mikhail Lavrovsky.

On forming Saint Petersburg Classic Ballet, Marina was able to attract some of the most talented dancers from the ‘mature’

companies of St. Petersburg – Kirov, The Maly and Choreographic Miniatures among them. The company’s repertoire consists of works by some of the countries best-known choreographers – including Marius Petipa and Vasili Vainonen – while their costumes and sets are made in the famous Mariinsky Theatre Workshops.

CACT joins London United to inspire young girls to take part in sport

The project will utilise the club’s female players to inspire younger girls

Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) will join the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea to encourage more than 5,000 inactive girls and women to participate in football and physical activity sessions.

Funded by the London Marathon Charitable Trust, £820,000 has been awarded to London United, a mix of 14 professional football clubs that tackle social challenges in London.

The funding aims to increase the number of girls aged 8-17 on CACT’s Kicks programme and to help overcome barriers on female participation.

In conjunction with this, CACT also plans to make use of its strong link with FA Women’s Championship side Charlton Athletic Women to inspire girls.

The project, called Kicks Girls, aims to offer a safe space for young girls to enjoy sports. The programme will also offer a series of educational workshops.

Kim Dixson, CACT’s London Social Inclusion Officer and former captain of Charlton Athletic Women, said: “We’re pleased to be able to deliver this project to help young girls in the community and inspire girls to participate in sport.

The Greenwich gas works

To continue the walk along the Greenwich Riverside from Deptford we cross Deptford Creek and at last we will be in Greenwich There is now a footbridge from Glaisher Street over to Greenwich and new flats, bars and shops in Greenwich west. This footbridge dates only from 2014 and is a cable-stayed foot and cycle swing bridge. It is not floodlit at night so as not to upset the fish. So cross over and end up on another identikit and largely featureless riverside walkway.

This area was not always so clean, respectable and boring.

Up until the 1820s it was called Brooks Marsh and contemporary maps show that it was nothing like it is now. This was an area of mudflats and muddy islands projecting into the Thames on and off covered by the tide. It was stabilised and turned into the solid land we see now by a contractor, David Mackintosh. He was very busy working on all the new roads, railways and docks in East London so I can imagine that this was just another job on his list. He was commissioned 12 January 22 2020

to do the work by the Phoenix Gas Company who had bought a market garden, osier bed and a wet dock. I need to explain something about Phoenix and the gasworks which stood on this site for the next hundred years.

I wrote up the history of the early gas industry in Greenwich for the Greenwich Historical Society a couple of years ago with a lot of detail and the ins and outs of the scandals which took place in this period with various gas companies and the Greenwich local vestry. That story is how eventually Greenwich was subject to a Parliamentary Mandamus order – so please read that article if you want to know about that. In this account now I’m just going to tell you a bit about the gasworks which stood at the Creek mouth from the mid 1820s.

I also ought to explain – details in that other article - that there was a very small earlier gasworks

slightly up the Creek in what is now Norway Street and it would’ve been roughly on the site of the Council flats. I also wrote an article about that little works – and that should be on the British Library website, along with a picture of it.

The use of coal gas for street lighting had been developed in the early 19th century with a pioneer gasworks in Westminster, which was quickly followed by others. One of the earliest works to use this new technology was based on Bankside. Like every town and village in England Greenwich was worried about ‘horrible instances of robberies and murder’ and there were those who sought to solve their problems with the new gas lighting. Sadly sometimes they gave a very rosy view of the wonders of this new lighting and how it would even be profitable.

The early gas works at Bankside had undergone a number of changes to became the Phoenix Gas Company and by the mid 1820s they were trying to expand south London - Greenwich was a particular target.

Phoenix negotiated lighting contracts with Greenwich vestry in 1825 to build a new gas works. They also took over the

works in Norway Street built by a rival, and used it until their new works could be built. Then they began to get into trouble.

In 1827 it was reported from the new site that “the tank had given way for the third time, water was undermining the whole premises, and the foundations were dangerous”. Eventually the new works was finished and the old Norway Street works was leased out to an engineering firm, although the gas holder there was kept in use for many years.

Greenwich Gas Works continued to supply the town and the surrounding area with gas for street lighting. In the 1870s as part of a major deal when Phoenix Company became part of the South Metropolitan Gas Company and this included Greenwich works. Although this was an important works in use for nearly 100 years very little seems to be known about it. In fact nothing seems to be known about the holders on site, and most of the reports about the works and gas company records are about social life there.

There are not really even any pictures that I am aware of.

We must therefore assume that the works continued with little need for comment. Both

Phoenix and later South Met were efficient and respectable gas companies. The 1867 map shows the site with a large square building set at an angle with four gas holders on the east side – that nearest the River much bigger than the others. By 1894 only the largest is shown and it may have seen a ‘two lift holder’ built in the late 1850s.

The three smaller ones probably dated from 1837. There is also the Norway Street holder just down the road. Then further away and up the Creek in Roan Street was another holder. This had been built to give more gas storage on a bigger site and more holders were built there in due course.

No jetty is shown on the 1864 map either on the Thames or Deptford Creek – but a wharf was built as part of the original contract although it is not obvious where it was. Coal came to these works from the Durham coal field and was delivered in specialist ships called ‘colliers’.

Apparently Greenwich did not have the facilities for its workmen - baths, wash basins - that the other Phoenix works enjoyed and staff petitioned the Board in the 1850s to do something about this saying they wanted “a room for their occupation during www.weekender.co.uk

the intervals of drawing and charging the retorts; such room to be also devoted to reading and religious instruction.” Later under South Met they, like all the other gas works, got an ‘Institute’ – although I don’t know exactly where it was. This was a much more ambitious affair with a hall which could be let out to local societies as well as sports facilities and space for social activities generally. There was a cricket ground – which I think was up on the Roan Street site – and a very successful rowing club In the mid 1880s the works was producing three million cubic feet of gas a day but once the huge East Greenwich works was built and it was decided to run West Greenwich down. In the Great War the company was asked by the Government to use its retorts to make charcoal for gas masks and similar equipment. They are said to have made enough to supply not only British needs but French and Italian as well. Gas making finally ended in 1926.

The site became a base for the South Met’s lighterage – shipping - department until the 1940s. They operated a fleet of three tugs, a dock tug and over a hundred barges of various types - this had started with a single barge on the Surrey Canal. All coal supplied for south London’s gasworks was transported by river. The department had opened in 1887 when the company launched its first tug the ‘George Livesey’. It would have included vessels like tug ‘T.B. Heathorn’, built 1893 and which sadly sank in Barking Creek only two years ago. In the 1890s Heathorn was followed by another tug, ‘Partnership’.

Holder tank

After closure the site was sold. It seems likely that it became a roadstone depot and remained so until taken over for ‘regeneration’ in the 1990s. When the wharf closed it was called Granophast Wharf which was a trade name for products of British Quarrying Co. British Quarrying dated from 1914 and was taken over

by ARC roadstone in 1947. A new layout for coating plants was designed and first used by them at Greenwich in 1947 and in 1953 they had a Coated Macadam Unit. ARC itself dates from 1935.

Finally I remember when I was busy trespassing on the wharf in the 1980s being delighted to find aggregate being stored in what was clearly the pit dug for the tank of a gasholder.

People interested in the history of old gasworks seem to be few and far between, but it is nevertheless a pity that none of them seems to have taken any notice of West Greenwich gasworks – it wasn’t as bad as all that.

1. NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Council of the Royal Borough of Greenwich (hereinafter referred to as “the Council”) on 22nd January 2020 made the above-mentioned Orders under section 9 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, as amended. 2. The effect of the Orders will be on an experimental basis to: (a) prevent all motor vehicles from entering Stowage, between approximately 8.5 metres and 51 metres east of the eastern kerb-line of Deptford

of Stowage, and replace it with a DG CPZ permit holders parking place.

The Orders provide that in pursuance of section 10(2) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, the Assistant Director of Strategic Transportation at Greenwich Council, or some person authorised by him, may, if it appears to him or that person essential in the interests of the expeditious, convenient and safe movement of traffic or for preserving or improving the amenities of the area through which any road affected by the Orders extends, modify or suspend the Orders or any provision thereof.

The Orders and other documents giving more detailed particulars of the Orders are available for inspection during normal office hours until the Orders cease to have effect at the Directorate of Regeneration, Enterprise and Skills, Strategic Transportation, Royal Borough of Greenwich, The Woolwich Centre, 35 Wellington Street, SE18 6HQ. 6. If any person wishes to question the validity of the Orders or of any of the provisions contained therein on the grounds that they are not within the powers conferred by the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, or that any requirement of that Act or of any instrument made under that Act has not been complied with, that person may, within six weeks from the date on which the Orders were made, apply for that purpose to the High Court.

The Council will consider in due course whether the provisions of the Orders should be continued in force indefinitely by means of a permanent Orders made under sections 6, 45, 46 and 49 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. Any person may object to the making of the permanent Orders for the purpose of such indefinite continuation, within a period of six months beginning with the date on which the experimental Orders come into force or, if the Orders are varied by another Order or modified pursuant to section 10(2) of the 1984 Act, beginning with the date on which the variation or modification or the latest variation or modification comes into force.
