A thought-provoking screening at Deptford Cinema Ever wanted to follow an old desktop hard drive as it wanders around the British landscape? Perhaps not. But neither did we know how much joy watching cats or toddlers go about their daily routines would be until someone filmed them doing so. Sunrise with Sea Monsters is a new film – a travelogue – by director Myles Painter. Shot on 16mm, it uses a common hard drive as a starting point for thoughtprovoking conversations with scientists, technologists and philosophers. Ultimately, it asks: how accessible will our growing catalogue of data be to future generations.

Myles will be in conversation after the screening.

While it might not get you to the moon and back, a short course in how to build a spacecraft could prove an insightful way to wile away a morning at the Royal Observatory this Saturday. Astronomer Anna Ross is leading the class, guiding participants through the challenges of building a spacecraft and the difficulties of space travel. Since launching the very first satellite into Earth’s orbit back in 1957, spacecrafts have been sent to planets, moons, asteroids, and comets. This masterclass is a chance to learn about the science behind designing the rockets, shuttles, and probes used to explore these destinations.

The work of the devil: Dr Faustus comes to Greenwich Theatre

Morality meets mortality in Splendid Productions’ reinvention of Christopher Marlowe’s Elizabethan tragedy Doctor Faustus.

The play tells the story of the scholarly Dr Faustus, who sells his soul to the devil in order to have his every wish granted.

Splendid Productions is a south-east London-based company that specialises in creating political theatre for young people and as such, most of their performances take place in schools and colleges. But their Dr Faustus is coming to Greenwich Theatre for two performances only on January 17, writes Holly O’Mahony…

“Dr Faustus is a strange and brilliant play. It’s the classic story of a vain scholar who sells his soul to the Devil for ‘unlimited power’, but of course, when you’re dealing with the Devil, there’s always a catch,” chuckles Ben Hales, who has adapted the play together with

“We’re interested in adapting classic plays in a provocative and engaging way. Part of what we do is demonstrate that you can make really effective theatre with very little

set, props and lighting,” explains Ben. “If we can do this in a school’s drama studio, then so can [the pupils and teachers].”

Since their first production in 2004 – an adaptation of Brecht’s Arturo Ui – Splendid Productions have toured annually, putting on around 120 performances of each production.

“In recent years, we’ve added in a few public performances in theatres, which has been a great way to share our productions with a wider audience,” says Ben. This is not the first time the company has adapted Dr Faustus, either. “We had adapted the play about ten years ago, but this version is quite different,” confirms Ben. “In both versions, we use a combination of contemporary language and new scenes that we have devised, alongside some of the text and scenes of the original play,” he reveals.

“We thought it would be easy to revisit a play we had already done once, but we found we had so many new ideas that it was like starting again. We always make our shows an hour long, which forces us to be very concise with our storytelling, but it was definitely a struggle to keep it short this year.”

A core theme that unites Splendid Productions’ shows is taking a much-loved old story and finding contemporary parallels to make it relevant to young audiences. “We felt that the story of Dr Faustus – about a man being tempted into a deal that looks great on the surface, but will inevitably destroy him – had lots of interesting resonances in this country right now,” explains Ben. “We also love the fact that Marlowe wrote so insightfully about human behaviour that we can all relate to Dr Faustus 500 years later.

They’re hard to find so we tend to keep hold of them!”

So, why see it? “It’s a surprising play,” says Ben. “The original script manages to blend some very profound poetry with the most ridiculous, silly comedy,” he laughs. “It feels like it was like an Elizabethan panto attached to a serious tragedy, [one that goes] from being the most foolish, crowd-pleasing spectacle to asking the deepest questions of humanity, and still feels true at both ends of the spectrum.”

Cast members Tanya Muchanyuka and Grace Goulding were both in Splendid Productions’ version of The Oresteia last year, while Nick Crosbie, who plays Dr Faustus, is working with them for the first time after being “impressively silly” in his audition.

Royal Opera House presents The Sleeping Beauty – live at Greenwich Picturehouse The Royal Ballet’s version of The Sleeping Beauty has been delighting audiences since it was first staged in 1946. It’s a production that holds a special place in the Royal Ballet’s history; it was the first ballet the company staged after World War II, when they moved into their new home at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, writes Holly O’Mahony…

Sixty years later, in 2006, the original 1946 staging was revived by Royal Ballet director Monica Mason and répétiteur Christopher Newton, returning Oliver Messel’s stunning designs and glittering costumes to the stage. It’s this same production that the company has staged at the Royal Opera House this winter. While tickets to see the live show have fully sold out, the production is being given the Screen Arts treatment at Greenwich Picturehouse, where a live screening is being held on January 16.

A classic Russian ballet, The Sleeping Beauty tells of the wicked fairy godmother Carabosse, who is furious she wasn’t invited to Princess Aurora’s christening. In revenge, she gives the baby a spindle, saying that one day the princess will prick her finger on it and die. To counter this, the Lilac Fairy makes her own christening gift of softening Carabosse’s curse: instead of dying, Aurora will fall into a deep sleep, which only a prince’s kiss can break.

Lo and behold, on her 16th birthday, Aurora discovers the spindle, pricks her finger and falls into an enchanted sleep. Thankfully, the forestshrouded palace is discovered 100 years later by Prince Florimund, who does the deed of awaking Aurora with a kiss.

The Royal Ballet’s production combines Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s enchanting score with Marius Petipa’s masterful 19th-century choreography. It also includes new sections specially created for the company by practitioners Frederick Ashton, Anthony Dowell and Christopher Wheeldon.

Naghdi, the archetypal music-box ballerina, is perfect for Aurora as she dances with cut-glass sparkle and silent steely control. Her Aurora is light on depth, not so much the vulnerable child coming of age, just a delighted teen enjoying her sweet sixteen,” she says, adding: “Matthew Ball’s Prince Florimund is a sensitive, deeply romantic outsider. He’s shown a vision of idealised female perfection and knows he must have it – there’s all sorts wrong with this but that’s a different story.”

Since Screen Arts began in 2011, they’ve been enormously popular and praised for making some of the UK’s most prestigious theatre, dance and opera accessible to audiences beyond where the productions are being staged. What’s more, tickets are usually far cheaper to see these productions in the cinema than at the live venue and thanks to the close up camera angles, you often have a better view, too. Advance booking is usually made available to Picturehouse members first, and screenings vary in popularity, but it’s worth booking in advance when you can to avoid disappointment.

Down’s syndrome programme receives generous donation The spotlight has been shone on the much-loved Charlton Upbeats in recent weeks. Newly appointed Charlton Athletic Chairman Matt Southall visited the Upbeats ahead of Charlton’s league fixture away at Queens Park Rangers (QPR) on 21 December.

Sky Sports filmed a day in the life of the Upbeats as they travelled to QPR to support the first team.

The Upbeats played QPR Community Trust’s Down’s syndrome team at Play Football Shepherd’s Bush, where Southall surprised the Upbeats and supported them during the games.

QPR Ambassador Andy Sinton and defender Àngel Rangel also visited the Upbeats to show their support for the programme.

After their games, participants from QPR Community Trust’s Down’s syndrome team and the Upbeats came together in the centre circle just before kick-off and held QPR’s banner as the teams walked out.

2020 has also started positively for the Upbeats programme. Following the sale of Charlton Athletic to East Street Investments, the Protest Fund, which some Charlton fans donated money to protest about the ownership of former owner Roland Duchâtelet, has distributed the remaining funds from the account to a range of causes, including the Upbeats.

Alan Davies, who helped distribute money from the Protest Fund to the chosen charities, explained why they chose the Upbeats.

“We felt it was important that the money raised for protests now go to causes that support the strengthening of the relationship between the fans, the club and the community, to help in the healing process after the recent years of alienation.

“Throughout this period the Upbeats have been a source of great pride and pleasure to all Charlton fans and their smiles have lit up some very dark days. We are delighted to show our appreciation by making this donation.”

The Upbeats programme for children and adults with Down’s syndrome has been running since 2008, and is entirely run on voluntary donations.

Terry Peart, CACT’s Mental Health and Disability Coordinator, said: “Many thanks for the donation and the very kind words for the Upbeats. The money will help in shaping a residential trip for the Upbeats as we trialled last year that was greatly appreciated by their parents.”

The annual Upbeats Walk to raise money for the project will this year take place on Saturday 25 April.

Four centuries of shipbuilding along the Greenwich riverside Mary Mills

Until a few years ago, if you walked east down Borthwick Street you couldn’t get to Deptford Creek. You had to turn right at the end and go down Deptford Green until you got to the church, then turn left and left again into Stowage, and you were alongside the Creek...

Today – with the building of a new housing estate there is a cut through from Borthwick Street and you can carry on walking parallel to the river. Now we can go into Glaisher Street and follow it round as it curves round to meet Creek Road.

So, the next section of the Greenwich riverside goes from Borthwick Street to the mouth of the Creek. It is now the site of a new(ish) housing scheme and Glaisher Street is the main road through the new estate. It is called after James Glaisher who was a distinguished member of the Royal Observatory staff. The only other road name on the estate is Basevi Way – Georg Basevi was an architect. Are they really the most appropriate names for an area which, as we will see, had a distinguished and interesting past? Nowhere is there any mention of the ship building industry which was once here - in fact the estate layout does not actually begin to reflect the historic land use patterns.

Upto the 17th century the land on the west bank of Deptford Creek as it emerges into the Thames here, was marshland – although it may have already been used for ship building. It was called Church Marsh and owned by the City of London’s Bridge House Estates. In 1614 they leased it to the East India Company. We have already seen how this Company, then newly formed, leased Stone Wharf, slightly up river in the 17th century and then moved to a larger site here. The lease followed protracted negotiations with the City’s Lord Mayor and Common Council and it is clear that the East India Company wanted a site where they could not only build ships but equip and provision them too.

The early 17th century map of Deptford shows the East India Company works on the western edge of Church Marsh and a long way from the Creek. They built “a dry dock and slipways, an iron foundry to make anchors and chains; a spinning house to make cordage; a slaughterhouse for the killing, salting and pickling of pork and beef; storehouses for timber and canvas; and an isolated powder house to store gunpowder. “ They are said to have employed 300 men and to have built thirty ships before 1820. However,

despite their investment in the site the East India Company gradually withdrew from it, with little built here after 1626.

Throughout the rest of the 17th century the dockyard and dry dock were leased out to a variety of ship builders. Most of them were fulfilling government contracts for warships and private merchantmen were probably built here too. Passing this area on the River then would have given a view of a fine sight of great ships, party built, on slips along the foreshore. The National Maritime Museum has many examples of impressive paintings by artists who must have been excited by what they saw and left their views of it for us to enjoy.

In the 1630s the yard was leased to a John Tailor and then during the Commonwealth to Peter Pett – the leading shipwright of his day and a Commissioner at Chatham Dockyard. Eventually, in the 1690s, it was leased to members of the Castle family.

William and Robert Castle were well known shipbuilders in the late 17th century who are mentioned in Pepys’s Diaries. William Castle an expert in building naval vessels as well as being married to the daughter of the Surveyor of the Navy. There are also suggestions that they were forerunners to the later Castle ship breakers. In the 18th century the site was leased to a number of ship builders and impressive lists of vessels built here have emerged. Several of these

ships were built as ‘fire ships’ or ‘bombs’.

In 1788 the site was taken over by members of the Barnard family. This dynasty of successful shipbuilders had begun in Ipswich and Harwich. They extended the site and it became known as Deptford Dry Dock. In the early 19th century the senior partner in the firm was a woman, Francis Barnard. On her death in 1825 her surviving son carried on as an absentee owner of the yard and at his death in 1851 a mountain of debt and mortgages ensured closure.

One of the most interesting 19th century shipbuilders here was Charles Lungley who built ships with iron hulls –not wood like his predecessors. He is also thought to be the person who persuaded the Admiralty to use the new system of screw-steamers for mail ships. He held a patent for unsinkable ships with watertight compartments and also designed steam engines which were built here in Deptford. His ships were usually modest in size although his designs and workmanship were of high quality and were ‘very smart vessels’. In 1864 he became involved in building biggest and most famous ship on the Thames – Brunel’s Great Eastern. In a deal with Millwall Iron Works, where Great Eastern was built, he became what appears to have been their managing director and thus oversaw the construction of Brunel’s huge ship.

Later Lungley returned to Deptford where he had one of the largest dry docks on the Thames – he held a patent for a dry dock which could be divided up as necessary with a system of gates. After he left Deptford his dry dock became known as the Metropolitan Dry Dock and was also associated with General Steam Navigation – more about them in a moment...

In the 19th century some of this large site began to be used by industries not connected with ship building. At the southern end of Lungley’s works, at Deptford Green was the Kamptulicon works belonging to Harry Taylor. Kamptulicon, had been first made in Greenwich High Road and as a sort of predecessor to linoleum for floors using rubber instead of linseed oil. Taylor blended the rubber with a gum in a process which is said to have been discovered by a doctor when dealing with a patient with head injuries.

It was advertised for use in ‘floors, knife boards, lunatic’s cells and horse boxes’.

By the middle of the 19th century what was then called ‘Stowage Wharf’ was used by the Patent Fuel Company. At that time there were a number of companies making ‘patent fuel’ and as many recipes as there were factories. They usually made up a combination of dust, tar , rubbish and whatever would stick them together to make briquettes which would burn as

fuel. This Deptford works may have used ‘Warlich’s method’ – a combination of coal dust and oil. They held a demonstration of a ship powered by creosote in 1869 and this might man that they were trying to produce a fuel for ships. In the early 20th century the site was a ‘sawing and desiccating works” – but what they were actually doing is unclear. Nearby were works ‘desiccating’ everything from coconuts to soup – but this sounds like a process to do with wood.

The most famous firm here was General Steam Navigation who were on the most easterly section of the wharf, alongside the Creek. Some readers will remember them. I am sure many of us older people can remember the Royal Daffodil steaming across to France with day tripper in the 1950s. Their founder, Thomas Brocklebank, is said to have first built a paddle steamer on Deptford Creek, then other vessels which were eventually taken over by General Steam. Eagle in 1820, said to be a wooden paddle steamer, was used on the Margate Service, followed by Hero, Royal Sovereign, City of London and Brocklebank. Later Harlequin and Columbine were built here by a Mr Evenden.

This Mr Brocklebank was a Deptford timber merchant and is not to be confused with the Liverpool shipbuilder of the same name who lived in Westcombe Park.

They used the paddle steamers for passenger transport and screw drive steamers for their flourishing cargo trade. They carried mails and in fact pioneered the ‘coastal steamship services on which England depended’. As freight carriers they imported live cattle and sheep - although this trade was lost with the opening of the Foreign Cattle Market on the Deptford Dockyard site. They specialised in links with ports in Britain but they also ran all those pleasure cruises to resorts down river from Deptford and across the Channel. By 1837 they had 351 vessels.

In the Great War General Steam’s yard was taken over by the Government and the Company lost 25 vessels on war service. By the 1940s they had about 45 ships and early on in the Second World War they evacuated London schoolchildren. Their vessels undertook a distinguished role at Dunkirk where their eight ships are thought to have evacuated 31,000 troops. They also evacuated troops from the other small ports and much else. Deptford Yard was badly bombed on several occasions including a V2 in the Creek itself. Before D-day 303 smaller vessels were converted in various ways here including landing craft and anti

This ended in the mid-1960s and men were laid off from 1967 and the became a lorry depot. General Steam was swallowed up into P&O in 1972, and then the last remains of the Deptford Yard closed.

There are clearly acres and acres of print about the East India Company both books and online

General Steam should, I think, be better known. They lasted nearly a hundred and fifty years; pioneered and provided a long lasting and efficient service. This Deptford site generally has seen some important and innovative successes. It was the site for the earliest days of the East India Company – and, whatever we think about them now, they were clearly a success in their own terms, making fortunes and governing an entire continent, they affected the lives of millions of people and their legacy lives on.

On a much smaller scale Barnard is a good example of a shipbuilder of the period, building big wooden sailing ships - in an era of ‘conquering the world’, and ‘building Nelson’s navy’. Lungley, I know little about and have no knowledge of any study of him - apart from an unpublished paper at a London shipbuilding conference. He seems to have been pivotal as shipbuilding entered a new world of iron ships and steam.

Originally in the 19th century Stowage Wharf had been leased by General Steam from the East India Company along with the old dry dock but from 1900 parts of the site began to be leased to the London Electricity Supply Company for Deptford Power Station expansion.

After the war vessels continued to be built at Deptford where there was still a staff of about 300. And of course there was the Daffodil taking jolly crowds on day trips to

France. I remember plodding across the Channel in a rival concern’s old tub on a trip advertised as ‘Rock across the Channel’ (its juke box

– warships, merchantmen and great East Indiamen. All forgotten with no memorial unless someone has planted a few daffodils

Walking round Glaisher Street you will learn nothing of this. The shipbuilding sites all eventually disappeared under an expanded Deptford Power Station – and more about that revolutionary structure next time. But I guess very few Deptford residents will realise what a distinguished ship building site this was. This article hasn’t the space to describe the individual ships built here

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Council of the Royal Borough of Greenwich (hereinafter referred to as “the Council”) on 13th January 2020 made the above-mentioned Orders under section 9 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, as amended. The Orders will come into operation on 22nd January 2020.

The effect of the Orders will be on an experimental basis to: (a) provide waiting and loading restrictions operating between 7am and 7pm on Mondays to Sundays inclusive on the south side of Plumstead

Road, within the westbound bus lane, between Burrage Road and Foreland Street; and (b) provide ‘at any time’ waiting and loading restrictions in the lengths of road referred to in the Schedule to this Notice.

The Orders provide that in pursuance of section 10(2) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, the Assistant Director of Strategic Transportation at Greenwich Council, or some person authorised by him, may, if it appears to him or that person essential in the interests of the expeditious, convenient and safe movement of traffic or for preserving or improving the amenities of the area through which any road affected by the Orders extends, modify or suspend the Orders or any provision thereof.

The Orders and other documents giving more detailed particulars of the Orders are available for inspection during normal office hours until the Orders cease to have effect at the Directorate of Regeneration, Enterprise and Skills, Strategic Transportation, Royal Borough of Greenwich, The Woolwich Centre, 35 Wellington Street, SE18 6HQ. 6. If any person wishes to question the validity of the Orders or of any of the provisions contained therein on the grounds that they are not within the powers conferred by the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, or that any requirement of that Act or of any instrument made under that Act has not been complied with, that person may, within six weeks from the date on which the Orders were made, apply for that purpose to the High Court.

ROYAL BOROUGH of GREENWICH ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 – SECTION 14(1) Devonshire Drive PLANNED ROAD CLOSURE (ORDER) 1. The Royal Borough of Greenwich makes this Order in exercise of powers under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. This is to facilitate works by Thames Water who need to carry out a service pipe relay.

2. The Order will come into operation on 27th January 2020 and would continue to be valid for 18 months. However the works are expected to take 5 days. The duration of the Order can be extended with the approval of the Secretary of State for Transport.

3. The effect of the Order would be to temporarily prohibit vehicles from exiting, proceeding or waiting (including waiting for the purposes of loading or unloading). On to Greenwich High Road from the side of 62 Greenwich High Road and to make Devonshire Drive 2 way from the rear side of 62 Greenwich High Road to the junction of Catherine Grove.

4. Whilst the Order is in operation traffic will be diverted via Devonshire Drive, Catherine Grove, Blackheath Road and Greenwich High Road. Prohibitions remain in force, pedestrians are not affected and vehicle access will be maintained wherever possible.

5. Nothing in this Notice will apply to anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or traffic warden, to emergency service vehicles, or to vehicles being used in connection with the works.

6. The restrictions described above will apply only during such times and to such extent as shall be indicated by traffic signs as prescribed by the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016.
