Christmas comes early to Blackheath

Gordon Buchanan tells tales from his life in the wild Gordon Buchanan has spent his career living up close and personal with animals in their natural habitat. Now, the wildlife filmmaker, best known for his series including Grizzly Bear Cubs and Me and Elephant Family and Me is coming to the Churchill Theatre to tell personal tales from his globetrotting travels. Using his own film footage and photography to illustrate his journey – from bottle-feeding cute animals to his toughest assignments – Buchanan lets his audience in on his life spent in the wild.

Hallelujah! West Wickham Operatic Society (WWOS) are returning to the Churchill Theatre this week with their latest show: Sister Act. The production comes just months before a newly-adapted production of the 1992 musical lands at the West End’s Hammersmith Apollo in July 2020, with Whoopi Goldberg reprising her original role, writes Holly O’Mahony…

Before the stage show, Sister Act began life as an American musical comedy film directed

by Emile Ardolino and written

by Joseph Howard. The story, which originally starred Whoopi Goldberg and Maggie Smith, follows disco diva Deloris (Goldberg), whose life changes when she is witness to a murder. To protect her identity, Deloris must hide in the last place people would expect to find her… a convent.

Sister Act was among the most financially successful comedy films of the early 90s, grossing $231 million worldwide. It was followed by a musical theatre production in 2009, produced by Goldberg herself and featuring original music written by eight-time Oscar winner Alan Menken, who is behind the soundtracks of Aladdin and Enchanted.

The news last month that Goldberg would reprise her original role of Deloris Van Carter when the musical is revived on the West End in 2020 was understandably met with excitement. Goldberg will be joined on stage by homegrown comedy queen

In the meantime and closer to home, though, it’s up to WWOS to bring the magic of Sister Act to life on stage.

WWOS was founded over 80 years ago in 1935. During their first 25 years as a company, their repertoire was drawn solely from Gilbert and Sullivan, and English musical comedy, but in 1961 the musical comedy element was replaced by classical European operetta, with modern musicals eventually joining the mix in 1986. Today, the company has an acting membership of approximately 75, and produces a musical production each spring and autumn at the Churchill Theatre in Bromley.

The amateur company, which brings shows to the Churchill theatre on a biannual basis, often produce productions which have either recently, or are soon to, enjoy a revival in the West End. Last November,

WWOS’s production of Stephen Sondheim and James Goldman’s 1971 musical Follies played the Churchill Theatre just months after the show enjoyed a sellout revival at the National Theatre. Great for regular theatre-goers and industry professionals, it allows the chance to see two very different productions of the same show in close succession, while the source material is still front of mind.

The company’s take on Sister Act offers just that: an opportunity to watch a very different take on a muchloved musical months before a new production dazzles on stage in the West End. Expect songs inspired by motown, soul and disco, plus plenty of humour and funk.

Copper & Ink You could’ve scraped the happiness off me with a spatula when the invite came to review Copper & Ink, the restaurant run by a winning team that includes the very eye-catching pairing of Tony Rodd and Becky Cummings, with Rob Parks as Head Chef.

Tony and Rob were both Masterchef finalists while Becky has her own interesting history in the world of gastronomy, writes Michael Holland.

My dining companion Fiona was agog when she checked out their website and recognised Chef Rodd from the telly, and even more thrilled when she saw the vegetarian options.

We sensed the friendliness immediately we walked in because all the Copper & Ink staff smile. Our coats and brollies were whisked away and we were led downstairs for the grandstand view of the open kitchen.

Tony came and introduced himself, as did Holly and Rob and Becky, and drinks were poured and we soon felt like old friends in a family home.

Then the food began to arrive. I could’ve stopped after the bread and delicious smoked butter and gone home happy. This was butter smoked over the clippings of an oak tree felled by high winds in the next street! What!

We chose the 5-course taster menus, with me going for the non-veggie option and paired wines.

First up was a mushroom extravaganza that became a rollercoaster ride of tastes and textures, each mouthful brought another surprise. My following courses were an exquisite melt-inthe-mouth quail affair, and halibut in an oyster velouté, while Fiona enjoyed caramelised carrots in a curd and peach concoction, then a tart with a blue cheese and broccoli sauce, which she declared her favourite.

Between each course there was ample time for discussion, with Becky and the chefs popping by to ensure everything was good. It was. Plus, Holly had been giving me the full rundown on the wine I’d been having, detailing why each one was just right for that course, and I could not fault her or the wines.

the table (Spiced apple fritter, caramelised apple, apple sorbet), then talked us round the creations before us. They tasted good; the apple was refreshing and woke the taste buds with its crispness. And after such great food and drink I was quite happy to be winding down with this orchard bounty dessert.

Now fully sated we could only look at each other and feel pleased and privileged. What a night it had been. Even the biodynamic wine I was closing with made me feel pretty dynamic. Then Holly appeared with more cutlery and a vintage port for me. Excuse me? The apple dish was a pre-dessert! Yikes! We hadn’t been counting but merely letting things take their course.

Even so, I might have been a bit full but for our further delectation we now had the pièce de résistance, the crowning glory, the course that I quickly discovered I wanted to taste forever and a day: Espresso parfait, dulce de leche ice cream, and chocolate covered coffee beans.

As I ate I heard a chorus of angels sing: ’Heaven, I’m in Heaven, And my heart beats so that I can hardly speak…’

Even Fiona, between spooning away to her heart’s content across the table, whispered in her dulcet Deptford tones, ‘That was truly, truly scrumptious’.

The ‘Secret City’ of Woolwich

Mary Mills I thought it was about time that I talked about what is not just the most important bit of industrial history in our area, but probably the most important in the whole country. Royal Arsenal, Woolwich - described on the enthusiasts’ current website as ‘the walled city’. The ‘Secret City’ in Woolwich – perhaps the biggest factory in the world. It stretched for three and half miles from Woolwich towards Erith, it was a mile wide and at its peak it employed about 100,000 workers.

When Greenwich Industrial History Society was set up, at our first meeting a little old man walked in announced that he was going to be our Chairman.

He had worked in the Arsenal and in retirement intended to tell the world what an amazing place it was. Jack - as people said “Well .. Jack! Jack‘s just Jack!’ and thanks to him I’m writing this now. He had way with words and a way of upsetting people, particularly Greenwich planners and those trying to decide what was to happen to this vast secret site once it became available for development. But however much trouble he gave the authorities it was because he, like them, wanted to make the borough a better place while acknowledging its history. And what’s wrong with that!

All I can do here is to try and give some idea as to the importance of the Arsenal – while remembering how much of it was secret and that much evidence of what went on there has been destroyed. And I hope Jack would have approved.

Like much else locally the Arsenal can be tracked back to Henry VIII. Henry’s warship - The Great Harry - had been launched in Woolwich in 1515. This was probably at a site called Gun Wharf which was by Bell Watergate, where the public toilets adjacent to the Woolwich Leisure Centre were.

Later the site was used for the storage of weapons and armour. To the east was a large Tudor house called Tower Place which stood roughly on the

site of the building now called ‘The Board Room’ and it was surrounded by marshland, and near the house were gardens and a rabbit warren where guns were tested. In 1671 weapons began to be stored there rather than at Bell Wharf. Later defence structures were built along the riverbank. Back in Greenwich the old Armoury in Henry VIII’s Palace had been taken over by the Board of Ordnance for making ‘fireworks ‘ – which means research on military explosives. When, in 1694, it was planned to convert the buildings to a home for old sailors, this laboratory was moved to Woolwich.

However guns were still being made in Moorfields in central London – now the site of Wesley’s Chapel. In 1716 a terrible explosion there killed several important people and that too was moved to Woolwich. Thus the origins of the Arsenal came together to form what became a huge complex of military manufacture.

The complex of buildings around the site of what was Tower Place are now mostly listed and are what most people would identify as ‘the Arsenal’ rather than its vast hinterland. The military explosives

works transferred from Greenwich and became the buildings known as the Royal Laboratory making weapons, shot and shells. This has now been restored by developers and renamed ‘The Firework Factory’. It may be the earliest large industrial building in the country and is suitably grand. Like all the older buildings on the site it has had many uses over the years and this short article cannot possibly begin to describe them.

Many other buildings followed - some, like the Royal Brass foundry, were very grand and featured important architects, and it is these which are now all listed by Historic England.

We must not forget however that these were industrial buildings where the equipment for warfare was manufactured.

One building not used for the manufacture of weapons was that now called ‘The Board Room’. This was the original building of the Royal Military Academy before it moved to its later site, now housing, on Woolwich Common. No one should underestimate the importance of the Academy, which was one of

the earliest European centres for advanced technical education. It attracted an elite group of scientists who worked there as lecturers and it is where important technical innovations began. This is true of the Arsenal generally over the years and apart from work at the academy itself, research on many many areas continued – and most we know nothing about. Nevertheless Woolwich was a hothouse for technical and scientific research.

Though the 18th and 19th centuries the site and its uses grew and grew as farms to the east were taken over and manufacturing sections were set up. The guns they made became bigger and bigger. Foreign dignitaries who visited London were brought here to be impressed by the size and grandeur of it all. Security however began to be increased and casual visits were stopped and eventually the Arsenal had its own police force as it gradually became ‘the secret city’. In 1824 the first railway was installed and this became a vast network which eventually included a proper passenger service with 13 stations. There was also the canal – www.weekender.co.uk

History Meanwhile Quite recently I have been working my way through a directory of international World Heritage sites – and many of them have nothing compared to what was at the Arsenal. Now the historic buildings have mainly been converted to housing.

The Firepower artillery museum and the council’s heritage centre have come and gone. The council now has plans for a ‘cultural centre’ – all theatres and music.

the remains of which lie at the housing area called Broadwater – and there is a whole saga around the lock into the river. In the middle of the 19th century the Chemical Department was set up – of course to research explosives - and they worked closely with other government departments like the explosives works at Waltham Abbey. Perhaps I should also briefly mention the Armstrong Gun Factory inaugurating a whole new regime of her ordnance manufacture. There were piers into the river and the ‘Woolwich Navy’.

There was a gas works, power stations, rolling mills, and steam jammers whose vast bases can still be seen alongside the ornamental gates of what was the shot and shell foundry.

There was the radial crane ‘of great vulcanic grandeur’ which could lift 25 ton hot gun barrels in and out of underground pits.

Although over 20,000 people were employed in the Arsenal in the Second World War it even then being run down. In peacetime there were attempts to manufacture items for ordinary civilian use but none of this was very successful. In the 1960s Thamesmead was built on the acres in the eastern part of the site – and 'tumps' there were preserved, some as nature sites. Recently a specialist slip for heavy river transports has been restored and listed. Also listed are the buildings of a nitration plant on the as yet undeveloped part of the area.

Greenwich Council began to eye up the factories as a possible site for much-needed housing. Councillors and officers were taken round to see it in a locked coach with curtains drawn – and orders not to peep out. In 1984 a new Plumstead Road was built through the southern part of the site to leave the Beresford entrance gate as part of Woolwich market. Fort Nelson museum removed any remaining artillery pieces. Some buildings were demolished and we understand much was destroyed. Remaining workers had all signed the Official Secrets Act.

Development continued – and this of course was what annoyed Jack so much because of what he saw as in sufficient regard for the history of the site.

There are several picture books, one of which is about the railway systems. The older part of the site is covered in the Survey of Woolwich published in 2012.

Meanwhile the small band of volunteers continue. They have recently held presentations in the Dial Arch Pub and advertise that as a chance for local people to meet them and find out more.

They hope this can be repeated. They are also hoping that some of the 1000s of pictures they have can be scanned.

They can also arrange tours and talks on the site Oh – and - when people tell you there was no industry in London remind them that in Southeast London we had the biggest that’s important and the most secret factory ever. People need to tell its story – Jack’s successors are doing what they can.

In time the department spread outside of Woolwich - I remember driving around Greenock in Scotland and seeing interesting looking industrial buildings. We discovered they were part of the Royal Arsenal and a Greenock local history book has described how Woolwich people coming to work there were assimilated into Scottish culture. And Greenock was not alone.

Gradually the developers moved in under the aegis of the Government’s English Partnerships Agency. There was a large archaeological exercise carried out by the Oxford archaeological Unit and they found many Roman remains.

Despite the removal of the Heritage Centre there are still things going on among volunteers. CACT re-launches Premier League Kicks programme

On Friday 1 November, Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) re-launched the Premier League Kicks programme.

Run in partnership with the Premier League, the programme engages young people, using football as a tool to reduce anti-social behaviour in the areas in which it is delivered.

CACT held a football tournament to mark the re-launch, with more than 50 young people attending at the regular venue of Garrard Academy in Erith.

Charlton Athletic Women goalkeeper Katie Startup attended on the night to show her support for the programme.

Speaking at the event, Katie said: “I think it’s good to connect with the community and different programmes. For a lot of participants here, my position is where they’d want to end up, potentially one day playing football professionally, so it’s good to provide a role model for them and show them that you can make it to that point.

“It’s great that they’re really taking an interest and really getting involved with the programme.”

Katie won the Professional Footballers’ Association Community Champion Award for the 2018/19 season, after attending a number of CACT programmes.

The 20-year-old has continued to do so this season, recently visiting a mental health project in Kent.

Kim Dixson, CACT’s London Social Inclusion Coordinator, said: “It was lovely to have Katie Startup here tonight to push women’s and girls’ football. We want this programme to be as inclusive as possible.

“The community needs programmes like this to look forward to. I think the young people really enjoy that, they have pride in their community.

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Council of the Royal Borough of Greenwich on 11th November 2019 made the above-mentioned Orders under section 6, 45, 46, 49 and 124 of and Part IV of Schedule 9 to the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, as amended.
