TWO BAKERLOO Line tube stations on the Old Kent Road are being officially proposed as part of the draft planning framework for the ‘Old Kent Road Opportunity Area’.

The two stations would be located at the top and the bottom of the road in an attempt to make the area more accessible to current and new residents by 2030.

The EU - shall we stay or shall we go?

HE SOUTHWARK Chamber of Commerce should be congratulated on trying to bring local businesses together to get a clear mandate on where we stand on the upcoming referendum.

The 63 per cent vote in favour of staying in the European Union is from a relatively few number of local businesses that came to the Southwark Chamber of Commerce debate last week, and cannot be considered an outright indication of how every business feels across the borough.

However, the debate last Thursday at Lewisham and Southwark College in Waterloo was lively, with a good panel of guests that passionately put their stance for or against very well.

Like all of the debates that have been broadcast on TV and radio channels for the last few weeks, the statistics by each camp contradicted one another on several occasions.

Like all people across the country the business men and women at this debate knew that much of the discussion would and should evolve around economics. Can Britain do better in or out of a large economic trade organisation, that many feel is eating away at our national sovereignty?

On the night, the stay camp managed to convince the people attending that the risk to jump into the unknown waters of going it alone was just too much. Businessman Mark Glover and MEP Seb Dance painted a very bleak picture of a future out of the EU. They said we would struggle to get large trade deals without the markets of our European neighbours. Mr Glover said that many of the international headquarters of large firms based in Southwark and the surrounding area might move with no guarantees that others would consider London in the future. This he pointed out would have an effect on the smaller businesses in the borough that service this workforce.

The out camp talked of opening new markets across the globe with many of our former colonies and new emerging markets with more ability to tap into foreign workers.

Most polls do show that at the moment we are split and many find it difficult to really quantify the arguments being forwarded by both camps. For some it is pretty much a straight forward ideological debate on being a European or a Briton, but most want to know what will be best for them and their families.

Unfortunately, no one knows for sure.

This is a massive decision that Prime Minister David Cameron put to the people.

While some of the national papers have come out in favour of one or the other camp, it is never been the job of this independent-owned local paper to tell people how to vote. Our job is to inform and present the facts and arguments; On this occasion the coverage is not extensive, as it is definitely more of a national / international issue, than a local issue.

But we would as always encourage everyone to register to vote the deadline is June 8 – just days away. One thing is for sure, if you don’t vote you are abstaining from one of the biggest decisions in a generation.

SOUTHWARK’S new mayor took to the depths of the Seven Islands Leisure Centre in scuba gear on May 25 to mark Bermondsey Sub-Aqua Club’s 60th anniversary.

Kath Whittam was invited for a try dive by the club to see the new scuba diving kit they recently bought with a £8,225 grant from Sport England and to hear about their drive to get kids more active.

Kath, a first time diver but seasoned swimmer, dived straight into the occasion on the evening with a look

at the club’s ten brand new sets before getting in the water for an hour.

She said: “It was wonderful, I had such a good time. They are such a nice group and they want to get people more active.

“They have enough equipment for 60 try dives this year which are free.

It’s one on one too, it could be dangerous if you do it by yourself.”

The volunteer-led club was founded in 1956 at Grange Road Municipal Baths in Southwark and is now looking to get more people over the age of twelve involved.

Victor Grayson, Bermondsey SAC’s secretary, said: “We’re offering try dives to local people and are targeting

young people who live in Southwark as we know we have one of the worst rates of obesity.

“We are trying our best to get children involved in it. We are offering the try dives on Wednesday nights and possibly other days.

“We have got a couple of new members who have come to us recently. We are expecting more interest soon as we have contacted local schools.”

Try dives take place on Wednesday evenings 8-10pm and you must be twelve years old or over.

Armed rapid police response team to be used in Southwark

SOUTHWARK HAS been named as one of the six “priority boroughs” where armed rapidresponse teams will be deployed to tackle gun fights.

Operation Viper was launched last week by Met Police commissioner, Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe, in reaction to a seventeen per cent “spike” in gun crime between January and May 2016, compared with the same period last year. So far two people have been murdered with guns this year.

The 50-strong team of armed officers, led by Trident and Gang Crime Command with organised crime detectives, will be available to respond to incidents where guns are fired.

Operation Viper officers will also carry out “high-visibility armed patrols”, as well as weapons sweeps, intelligence-led stop and search, and pro-active number plate recognition operations. Viper officers will also take over duties for targeting known firearms offenders, making arrests and executing search warrants.

Other boroughs under the Viper squads’ remit are Hackney, Lambeth, Brent, Newham and Tower Hamlets; subject to change depending on guncrime trends in other boroughs.

Commander Duncan Ball, of Scotland Yard, said: “Viper gives us renewed energy in our fight to take guns off the street. We are nowhere near the levels [of gun crime] five years ago, but it’s our job to keep it that way. We are seeing that at least half of these shootings are related to drugs and we will work closely with colleagues across the Met on that.”

Sir Hogan-Howe said: "Firearm use is thankfully still rare in London and rarely affects those not involved in crime. But I am very concerned about the recent increase and we are determined to stop it. Our officers will use all their powers to take on the gunmen and those that supply them.”

‘Over a hundred youths screaming and kicking cars’

‘OVER A HUNDRED’ youths gathered on Jamaica Road late at night on Tuesday, May 31 “screaming” and “kicking” cars before being dispersed by police.

Police were called shortly after 10pm to the busy Bermondsey road following reports of a large number of youths and anti-social behaviour.

Nick Sellers, an eyewitness, said: “I got home to see a lot of youths congregating on the street near Bermondsey Underground, where I live opposite.

“There was a lot of confusion and panic amongst them, but I couldn't make out what they were saying.

“A couple of them ran into surrounding streets behind the Underground station across the road from our flat.

“I go into the shops in the street quite regularly but I've never seen that. Quite frightening really. I just can't understand why so many of them were hanging around in the first place.

“We're not talking a small group, we're talking at least 100 people if not more.”

It is not yet clear why the large number of youths came to the area.

Ana Duarte, another eyewitness, said: “I’m not quite sure why everyone was here on the first place. There were hundreds of teenagers.

“They were just screaming and in the middle of the road for about 30min before police came. They kicked some cars and a bus.

“All very nuts. And I just wonder where the parents of these kids were? As almost all of them looked under eighteen.”

The police have told the News that no arrests have been made and that enquires are ongoing.

Ferries could be deployed during bridge closure FERRIES COULD help the public get across the Thames as the City of London officially announced the closure of Tower Bridge from October 1 for three months.

The 122-year-old bridge will close this winter to vehicles for the entire time but open for pedestrains for all but three weekends so that vital engineering works can take place.

Around 40,000 people and 21,000 vehicles cross the bridge every day making it a critical connection in crossing the Thames.

Its closure will mean ferries could be drafted in to help thousands of members of the public get across safely without having to take lengthy diversions.

Chris Hayward, Chairman of the Planning and Transport Committee, said: “This decision to close Tower Bridge to vehicles has not been taken lightly, and this course of action has been taken after extensive consultation and planning in conjunction with numerous stakeholders.

“We will use this time to repair, refurbish, and upgrade London’s most iconic bridge, which has gone without significant engineering works for more than thirty-five years.

“We will work hard to minimise disruption to both pedestrians and motor vehicles, and the bridge’s viewing walkways and exhibitions will stay open for the entirety of the works.”

Coinciding with the Tooley Street closure to eastbound traffic, the closure will add to a growing list of traffic problems residents will have to face.

Leon Daniels, Managing Director of Surface Transport at TfL, said: “We’ve been working closely with the City of London to minimise the impact of the vital refurbishment of Tower Bridge and to ensure that Londoners have the travel advice they need.

“Our advice to those traveling in the area is to check before they travel and to plan an alternative route or allow more time for their journeys as roads will be busier than usual.”

The works on the bridge will be paid for by the Bridge House Estate, a charitable trust, and carried out primarily by BAM Nuttall, a British based civil engineering contractor.

Care home could close and move to Kent ROTHERHITHE

A ROTHERHITHE adult care home for over-65s is “no longer fit for purpose” and proposals have been made to move the facility ten miles away to Beckenham, according to its owners.

Ann Moss Specialist Care Unit is said to “need more modern and specialist mental health services” and proposals have been made to move to Chelsham House, a unit of Bethlem Royal Hospital.

The care home on Ann Moss Way is run by South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) and cares for thirteen Southwark residents suffering from mental health conditions such as dementia.

A spokesperson for SLaM said: “No decisions have been made and we are in discussions with NHS Southwark CCG, which commissions the service on behalf of Southwark patients.

“The trust will discuss the proposal with all the patients affected, and their families and carers, as part of a careful and meaningful engagement exercise.

“We would document their needs and, should this proposal go ahead, we would review with them how best to support them in a transition to a new environment.”

If the proposals are agreed, the patients would have access to new facilities such as en suite accommodation as well as all the resources at the hospital including clinical experts.

Moving elderly suffers of dementia can pose health risks, however, due to a sudden change in environment.

Caroline Abrahams, Charity Director of Age UK, said: "While taking action against poor standards in care is vital, we know that moving vulnerable, frail older people can pose a risk to their health and well-being.

“The disruption for people living with dementia can be particularly acute if it takes them away from their familiar surroundings and carers.

“Whenever a service closes it is absolutely vital that the welfare of those receiving care is paramount and every precaution must be taken to make sure that the process is managed safely.

“The NHS has a duty to protect the welfare of all the older people in these circumstances and make sure they are able to move to a new facility that can safely meet their needs and as near as possible to their families and community.”

This would come as part of wider efforts to build 20,000 new homes, two new primary schools and turn the road itself into a “modern boulevard”.

EIGHTIES POP star Paul Young will play at this year’s Bermondsey Carnival, an annual day of music and family activities that attracts thousands to Southwark Park.

Young topped the charts in 1983 with Wherever I Lay My Hat (That’s My Home), the first in a string of top 40 singles. The Brit Award-winner was associated with the ‘blue-eyed soul’ genre, and sung the opening lines to the Band Aid hit Do They Know It's Christmas?.

“In my opinion Paul Young is a British legend, he has always been my top five wish-list of artists to appear at the Bermondsey Carnival, and this year I finally succeeded,” said Phil Burkett of Bermondsey Beat, the organisation that has managed the carnival’s main stage for the last eighteen years. “Paul will bring people to Bermondsey and Southwark Park who have never visited before and I am sure that Southwark will love him.”

Originally founded in 1900 to raise funds for Bermondsey victims of the

Boer War, the carnival was reintroduced by local families it in the early 1990s and is now supported by Southwark Council. Twelve thousand people attended last summer – its largest audience to date. Previous performers include Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel, Chas and Dave, and The Real Thing.

“This event brings people back to where they grew up – you see generations of families sitting on the grass having a picnic,” said Burkett.

“People who moved out of the area years ago come back home, and this doesn't happen often. It’s also great to see people who have not visited Southwark Park before walking around enjoying themselves.”

Joining Young in this year’s line-up is locally based reggae group Indika, Motown trio The Aim, as well as the return of Kinetika Bloco – a performance group of young musicians and dancers – for a carnival parade.

Bermondsey Carnival will take place at Southwark Park on Saturday, July 2.

THE FOUNDERS of two trendy Peckham restaurants joined forces this weekend, not in the kitchen but at the alter.

The people behind Spanish restaurant Miss Tapas and new Taiwanese restaurant Mr Bao were married at a church ceremony in Seville, southern Spain, on Saturday, May 28.

The foodie twosome – real names Frank Yeung (Mr Bao) and Blanca Rowe (Miss Tapas), changing her surname to Yeung – met, aptly, in a restaurant a few years ago. The pair got chatting and bonded over their shared interests. They moved to Peckham as a couple and in 2015 co-founded Miss Tapas on Choumert Road. Mr Bao, with its speciality menu of steamed buns, opened on Rye Lane in January of this year, founded by Yeung and his business partner Nick Birkett.

“It’s been mind-blowing really, 150 people joined us,” said Frank, speaking to the News at the airport waiting for his plane back to the UK. “We brought the staff from both restaurants because we’ve all become really close.”

The foodie power couple followed their church ceremony with a “big party” said Frank, and they celebrated with a fitting amount of food: “Canapés, lots of Spanish jambon, tapas, then a three course meal. And we had a big English wedding cake – all the UK guests really enjoyed that.”

According to Frank, being restaurant-owners is not an issue for the pair – in fact it helps their relationship. “It’s not at all difficult being in the same industry. We love the same things, especially eating out of course, trying out new restaurants and going back to our old favourites,” he said. “And we run on the same schedule. For some couples it’s hard if one of them is in the industry, with the late hours, but with us we’re both on the same timetable and we make sure we take the same days off.”

Engineer to build bridge in Rwanda

PETER HILLS Primary School had the grand opening of their new football pitch on May 27 with a ribbon cutting ceremony and penalty shootout.

The school’s new ground was named

after their largest donor, Metro Village, who generously gave £10,000 to help them reach their £24,000 target.

All the children were let out of class to see the pitch open for play and to hear the news that two new goals and basketball hoops are on their way after roofing company A&E Elkins donated £2,000.

Ching Tang, a company director at Metro Village, said: “We were approached by the school who said they were looking for funding for their pitch which was close to being destroyed.

“We are very involved with the local community and local projects so when this came up we wanted to help out as

much as we could.”

Metro Village has also helped with funding the school’s upcoming circus day, where there will be two shows and food on July 1.

Tickets for the 4:30pm show on the circus day are still available for £7 for adults and £5 for children.

David Knight, 31, is part of a project run by the charity Bridges to Prosperity which helps provide access to education and trade through improved infrastructure in parts of Africa and South America.

The team of ten leave the UK on June 12 to build a 48-metre-long bridge across a perilous river crossing close to the village.

He said: “The cause is wonderful, it’s a walking world in Africa where transport is predominantly by foot, you walk everywhere.

“What appeals to me is helping these people that are often cut off by natural hazards, in this case a torrential river.”

The trip will be David’s first to Africa but the structural engineer is keen to ensure that his work makes a material impact in an area where flooding can cause vast problems.

The charity builds around 20 bridges a year in places like Rwanda, Nicaragua and Haiti, with materials being provided by a number of firms for the venture.

Residents demand the 50 metre pool they were promised

OUTRAGED CANADA Water residents are demanding Southwark Council give them the pool they were promised in earlier discussions about the Seven Island Leisure Centre’s replacement.

Campaigners were incensed when they heard the original plan for a 50m pool were shelved in favour of a 25m one, when the current one measures 33m.

Residents created a petition on the council’s website which has so far gained 167 of the 500 signatures needed for it to be discussed at a cabinet meeting.

David Foot, a Canada Water resident, said: “It is the fact that they are not going to give us the pool they promised that gets me.

“Of all the people who saw the plans only one person spoke in favour of what the architects from British Land were proposing.

“They don’t seem prepared to take any

sort of feedback. So if this petition gets 500 signatures they will have to say something constructive.

“They modified the Master Plan and the buildings are now six times higher, the pool is much smaller and they are putting it in a green reserve. It is really despicable. It is terrible.”

Plans to build a new leisure centre are already controversial as it would be on a “green corridor”.

Councillor Mark Williams, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, said: “With plans now progressing for Canada Water the council has committed to delivering a sustainable, state of the art modern leisure centre for residents that will be fully accessible.

“This will include an 8 lane 25 metre lane pool, a learner pool, a four courts sports hall, three studios, and a 150 station gym.

“We are awaiting the results from the public consultation before making a final decisions.”

PRIMARY SCHOOL children have been given prestigious tours of the Houses of Parliament by Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Neil Coyle.

Pupils from the English Martyrs’ RC Primary School in Walworth were taken for their trip on May 24.

Mr Coyle was photographed posing with some 70 pupils, who challenged him to try his hand at “dab” dancing: a craze that has derived from the music videos of US hip-hop group, Migos.

The Labour MP also took pupils from Phoenix Primary School in Bermondsey for a trip to Westminster on May 23. Mr Coyle tweeted saying: “Thanks to Phoenix School for the questions/entertainment today. Great to see more Southwark students in Westminster.”

The News reported last week how Sister Cecily Dunn, who had led the Bosco Centre on Jamaica Road since the 1980s, passed away last Tuesday after being diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer just three weeks before.

The Salesian Sisters at the centre – the order to which Sr. Cecily belonged – have organised memorial services locally and at a Battersea church significant to their religion.

Mass will be held at 7pm at St Peter & the Guardian Angels Church, Paradise Street on Thursday 16 June, then Sr. Cecily’s remains will be taken to Sacred Heart Church in Battersea to lie there overnight.

The funeral mass will be held at Sacred Heart at 10am on Friday 17 June, followed by a cremation at Honor Oak and a reception at the Bosco Centre. The public is welcome at all services.

“Sacred Heart is a Salesian Parish,” said Romaine Shilling, who has worked at Bosco for 20 years. “Battersea is actually where the Salesians started in London. We felt we needed to have a mass in

Bermondsey for all the people that would not be able to make it to Battersea, so we are having a 'goodbye' for Bermondsey.”

The community has responded to Sr. Cecily’s death with warm messages and bunches of flowers, honouring her years of service to local young people at the Bosco.

“The response has mainly been on Facebook, people have said some beautiful things,” said Romaine.

“We’ve had lots of emails too, and many ex-students have been in touch.”

Angie Stewart said on Facebook: “Sister Cecily a true inspiration, a pillar of the local community (bermondsey) A amazing lady who knew every child by there name & cared deeply about there future.

Hope your spirit continues to shine on the youth of bermondsey through the staff of Bosco & church of St Peters may they continue to follow in your footsteps. It was a pleasure to know you throughout my daughter's younger years. You made a difference to so many people's lives, thank you.”

Louise Douglas added: “I've just said a little prayer. She took me on holiday to Scotland when I was 10 and I have amazing memories from that trip. She made it so special and it made a lasting impression on me.

She was a truly amazing person and a real champion of the community.”

PARKS AND green spaces in Elephant and Castle and Walworth are set to receive a makeover after a splash of new funding was approved by Southwark Council.

A cash injection of £939,113 was approved by councillors at a planning committee meeting on May 25, to create a “network of high quality parks and open spaces”.

The first of six projects given approval was for a newlylandscaped children’s play and sports area for the Peabody Square estate in Blackfriars Road. Some £147,652 has been committed out of funding from the Blackfriars Circus development.

The committee’s councillors also approved funding for the Geraldine Mary Harmsworth Park. A dilapidated former park keeper’s building at the St George’s Road entrance will be “brought back” into use and staffed become a staffed information point for visitors.

Victory Community Park, near the Bricklayers Arms, will be made bigger by joining up land between Rodney Place and Elba Place, and will see a “significant upgrade” in its sports and play area equipment.

The tenants and residents’ association in Lancaster Street and the Bankside Open Spaces Trust will receive £120,000 to spend on their chosen environmental projects.

Nursery Row Park near East Street has been allocated £47,754 for landscaping and playground improvements, to contribute to a £800,000 project. Council officers have agreed to work and consult with Friends of Nursery Row Park.

Elsewhere, works are currently ongoing for the pavement water fountains at the newly-opened Elephant Leisure Centre.

Alleged knife fight in Peckham

A MAN believed to be in his twenties was rushed to hospital on Saturday following an alleged knife fight in Peckham.

Police say they were called to the scene of the fight in Shenley Road at 3.15pm by London Ambulance Service paramedics.

A Met Police spokesman said the man appeared to have received a “slashing injury” to his arm.

However his injuries were not believed to be “life threatening or life changing” and he was taken to a south London hospital.

An eyewitness told the News that forensic officers were on the scene looking in bushes, and also working near Peckham Fire Station in Peckham Road.

No arrests have been made, and anyone with information that could help police with their ongoing enquiries is urged to call 101.

LAMBETH COUNCIL have apologised to a Southwark charity after a demand for council tax was sent by debt collectors on their behalf despite it not being based in their borough.

Burglary suspects caught on camera

POLICE ARE appealing for anyone who can identify three suspects who are believed to have stolen £50,000 of jewellery from a Dulwich home.

The three black-and-navy-clad burglars, two men (left), and one woman (far right) are suspected to have targeted the empty home in Woodhall Drive between 9am and 10pm on April 25.

A safe containing £325 in foreign currency was also taken, as well as a Macbook Pro. It is unknown whether they fled in a vehicle or on foot.

The home occupiers were not there at the time, and no arrests have been made.

The East Dulwich Community Centre received a demand for £2,486.71 on May 12 from Equita, a debt collection firm, prompting an intervention from East Dulwich councillor James Barber.

Councillor Barber wrote to Lambeth Council to ensure the error was corrected and for an explanation for how it happened.

Cllr Barber said: “I was incredulous at Lambeth Council calling in debt collectors to chase an East Dulwich charity for an address they clearly had nothing to do with. True incompetence.

“The last thing trustees need is this kind of street and hassle when they are working so diligently to provide a local service at the East Dulwich Community Centre for so many local groups.

“It felt daft that I had to step in as an East Dulwich councillor and directly approach Lambeth Council Chief Executive to get this finally sorted out.

“Lambeth Council at first couldn’t understand how they could have made this error.”

Lambeth Council have said the error was “administrative” and is possibly due to confusion between a “Dulwich Community Centre” in their borough.

Graham Kent, vice chair of the East Dulwich Community Centre Association, said: “Though as a small charity we are very relieved that this matter has been settled and are very grateful to our MP and councillors for their support and assistance, we do worry that a liability order could be obtained in these circumstances. I think this needs to be urgently investigated.”

A Lambeth Council spokesman said the debt has now been cancelled, an investigation was carried out and a letter of apology to the community centre was being written.

BERMONDSEY’S HARVEY Brown led out Millwall FC on May 29 for their play-off game against Barnsley in Wembley Stadium to the cheers of thousands.

The life-long Lions fan had a day to remember as he shared the spotlight with players he’s followed all his life.

Despite Millwall’s 3-1 loss, sevenyear-old Harvey’s spirit wasn’t dampened as the walk took months of planning.

Harvey’s mum, Vikki, said: “It was amazing. It was such a lovely day even though we lost. It was disappointing we lost but it didn’t spoil the day at all.

“It was very exciting. The way they [the team] were with him was great.

There’s a picture of Harvey with Neil Harris and it was like he had known them all for years.”

The football club has played an important part in Harvey’s life as they supported a campaign to get him and 77 other children in the UK suffering from Morquio syndrome the vital medication Vimizim funded on the NHS. Harvey has the rare Morquio syndrome, which stunts skeletal growth, leaving sufferers with weak bones, and a tendency to develop heart disease, and impaired vision and hearing – and supporting Millwall has been a great love of his.

Managers at station beauty salons say plans to move them will affect passing trade

MANAGERS OF beauty salons around Peckham Rye station have said the council’s plans to move their shops will “ruin” their businesses.

The six salons and beauty shops at the junction of Blenheim Grove and Rye Lane face being displaced to a new row of shops in Bournemouth Close, following the council’s decision to demolish the Peckham Rye Arcade in favour of a station square.

The News reported in April that families at the Atwell Estate are also angry at the prospect of Southwark Council demolishing their garages, in order for the thirteen new units to be placed directly at the bottom of their gardens.

The council recently submitted a planning application for the ‘Peckham Palms’ proposal, which suggest demolishing the Bournemouth Close garages and replacing them with thirteen commercial units for the salons, as well as new cafés and bars.

Omo Rhuasa, manager of the Divine Destiny hair salon said: “I don’t like the idea at all. We have a really strong community here already, and we make money by people coming in and

socialising and deciding to buy things as they walk past.

“These salons are famous all over the country. People in Birmingham and Liverpool come here. People won’t notice us if we’re over in Bournemouth Close. We have not been told if we will be offered compensation either.

“I understand why the Atwell Estate residents are upset. They don’t want to have loads of noise from businesses right

by their houses. It’s a residential area.”

The 55-year-old also said the council should be more focused on building homes and spending money on looking after homeless people.

The manager of Hair & Beauty African Beauty Products, who did not want to be named, also said it would “put them out of business”.

“I think the council have been fair in trying to keep us informed of what their

plans are, but this could put us out of business. None of the salon owners want this to happen,” she said.

“We would quite like to be able to move into the new square when it’s built, but that doesn’t look likely.”

The planning application submitted by Southwark Council, working with Tree Shepherd Architects, says the Peckham Palms development would “transform an under-used garage site into a vibrant new retail community”.

It says the thirteen shops would feature a wide, unobstructed roof to create a “generous covered arcade” with groups of palm trees for a “green” “semiindoor” environment.

Seventy-three-year-old Shirley Neild, the Atwell Estate’s TRA chair, said in

April that the new shops would leave the estate’s residents with “nowhere to park”.

She said: “What if one of us needs an ambulance or a fire engine needs to get on to the estate? With all the shops lined up there will be no way for emergency vehicles to get to our homes.”

The residents say they have asked them for new security gates at the entrance to the estate, so people “drinking or messing around” won’t be able to get in.

“We also asked if they will give licences to the bars that won’t let them stay open too late, but we were told they ‘couldn’t promise us anything’,” Shirley said.

Cllr Mark Williams, cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, said: “In the beginning Peckham Palms was a creative solution to help the many hair and beauty businesses around the station find new premises during the construction.

“However, we now have a more ambitious vision and we want to not only make sure the businesses relocating to Peckham Palms not only get the full business and marketing support they need to get their customers to move with them but grow and become the number one spot for afro-Caribbean hair and beauty in London.”

Hospital bosses take the plunge for charity

Community falls project wins top award

AN INNOVATIVE project to help older people who are at risk of suffering a fall has won a prestigious Health Service Journal (HSJ) Value in Healthcare Award.

Guy's and St Thomas' community rehabilitation and falls team was named as the winner of the Value and Improvement in Community Health Service Redesign category at the awards ceremony (24 May).

The team runs more than 20 'strength and balance' exercise classes in Lambeth and Southwark and provides one-to-one treatment in people's homes.

Dr Mark Kinirons, Clinical Director of Adult Community Services at Guy's and St Thomas', says: "The strength and balance classes are an outstanding example of prevention and early intervention. The evidence is that, as a result of running these classes, we will see a reduction in falls and therefore ambulance calls, A&E attendances and fracture operations.

"We are also finding that the classes are providing an opportunity for those attending to make new friends and reduce their social isolation. We are supporting local elderly people to stay fit and remain in their own homes."

GUY’S AND St Thomas’ top bosses were heroes for the day when they took part in a unique fundraising abseil.

Chief Executive Amanda Pritchard, Chief Nurse Dame Eileen Sills and Medical Director Dr Ian Abbs joined more than 200 other fundraisers – many dressed as superheroes – for the first ever abseil down St Thomas’ Hospital.

Amanda Pritchard said: “It really shows the dedication of all our supporters and fundraisers. All the

money raised will go directly back into our services to ensure we can continue to provide world class care for our patients in an environment that they deserve.”

Funds raised from the abseil will support all areas of the Trust, including the new £160 million Cancer Centre at Guy’s, Evelina London Children’s Hospital and Guy’s and St Thomas’.

Kieron Boyle, Chief Executive of Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity took part in the abseil dressed as Batman. He said:

A 90TH birthday celebration for Her Majesty the Queen was thrown by tenants and residents association (T&RA) groups from across Peckham and Camberwell on Saturday.

The free party, hosted by the MidElmington Estate T&RA, saw Chelsea pensioners, a Punch and Judy show, donkeys, a birds of prey display and a bouncy castle.

Members of T&RAs from Peckham and across the borough, including: the Ledbury Estate, Sumner Road, Caroline Gardens, Dainsford and Poets Corner came to “catch up and enjoy each other’s company”.

Mid Elmington Estate T&RA chair, Val Fenn, said: “It was a marvellous day and everyone had a lovely time and we were glad to have the new Southwark mayor [councillor Kath Whittam] come and meet so many of us. Everyone worked really hard to make it a great day and we had loads to do and plenty of great food. My personal highlights was the owls, they were incredible.”

Year-eleven pupil Ahmed Roble said his mind was made up to apply for the world-renowned public school in Windsor after going to an open day.

Come September Ahmed will be studying A-levels in English Literature, Government and Politics, History and Spanish. The scholarship will cover two years’ tuition fees and the black-coattailsand-waist-coast school uniform, as well as costs to study clarinet and field trips.

All Ahmed has to do now is secure six A-grade GCSEs. His top predicted grades, meanwhile, are for five A*s and one A grade, with this year’s results day confirmed for August 25.

Both Ahmed’s parents are Somalian, and moved to the Netherlands where he was raised until they took him to London when he was five years old.

“My parents didn’t know much about Eton until I explained that nineteen prime ministers and members of the royal family have studied at Eton,” Ahmed said.

“My parents were instantly on board.

They are proud of me but also sad that I'm leaving home.

“My aim is to study History at Oxford.

In the long term, my dream job is to be a politician because it’s how I believe I can really give back and help people on a large scale.”

A WALWORTH man has been banged up for fourteen years after attempting to rape a woman who was jogging in a park.

On August 28, 2014, Ernest James ambushed the jogger at Hollow Pond, at the edge of Epping Forest.

The court heard that James grabbed the 33-year-old victim from behind as she stopped to catch her breath.

James put a gloved hand over the mouth of the woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, and held a blade to her neck, threatening to stab her if she tried to call for help.

He then tried to pull down her jogging trousers, but during the struggle the victim managed to bite James’s finger.

The cowardly man fled the scene, but crucially, he left the glove behind and his victim without serious injury, though badly shaken.

Police were called and the glove and items of the victim’s torn clothing were sent for forensic analysis, providing a DNA profile that related to James.

James, 35, of Pilton Place, had pleaded guilty before the hearing last week at Snaresbrook Crown Court, where he was sentenced by His

Honour, Judge Stephen Dawson.

Detective Constable Matt James of the Met’s Sexual Offences Exploitation and Child Abuse Command, said: “James is a violent sexual predator and the sentence reflects the danger he presents to women.

“Thankfully the victim was able to fight him off and I would like to pay tribute to her bravery during the attack and all the subsequent courage she has shown. With her support we have been able to ensure that James has received a deservedly long prison sentence.”

Chamber ‘has mandate to promote staying in Europe’

SOUTHWARK’S Chamber of Commerce has a “clear mandate to promote staying in” the European Union after a debate and vote was held on May 26.

The result came after hearing the views of two politicians and two businessmen put 63 per cent in favour of staying, 29 per cent wanting to leave and eight per cent undecided.

The two Remain debaters were Southwark businessman Mark Glover and Labour MEP Seb Dance, and the two for Leave were Tory MP Adam Afriyie and Southwark businessman Adrian Amos.

Mr Glover, chief executive of Bellenden, said: “It’s about the economy.

If we come out of the EU we would be under threat. I employ 40 people in the borough and stability is critical.”

Mr Dance, MEP for London, said: “One of the main points why we should

remain is protection. Where the EU holds us to account over anti-discrimination laws and protects our trade with countries around the world.”

The Leave side dispelled Remain’s economic arguments by arguing protecting our democracy was just as important. Mr Amos, director of architectural supply firm Lassco, said: “It is about our liberty, self-determination and the unalienable right to control our borders. We fought for that in the past.”

Mr Afriyie, Conservative MP for Windsor, said: “We are the fifth largest economy in the world soon to be the fourth. We are able to stand on our own two feet.”

Professor Dasgupta said: “By using the 3D printed model I am able to hold the patient’s prostate in my hand before we operate.

“I can feel the tumour, I can see how close it is to vital nerves and muscles, and this allows me to plan the operation with detailed precision and accuracy.

“There are so many benefits to robotic surgery but, by using the robot, a surgeon loses his touch. The 3D model returns my touch and eliminates an element of

guesswork.”

Guy’s and St Thomas’ has two da Vinci surgical robots and carries out the most robotic operations in the UK – with more than 400 cases a year, making it the largest surgical robotics programme in Britain.

This wasn’t the first time staff at Guy’s have utilised 3D printing, having successfully transplanted a kidney from an adult to a child last year using the technology.

The team at the hospital used an MRI scan of the prostate to create the 3D model which helps surgeons and patients better plan and understand the procedure.

THE SOUTHWARK Council by-election to replace outgoing Liberal Democrat Lisa Rajan’s seat in the Surrey Docks ward will take place on June 9.

Five candidates from the Conservative Party, Labour Party, the Green party, UKIP and the Liberal Democrats will join one independent candidate to contest the Rotherhithe seat.

Key issues the candidates have campaigned about include the Canada Water regeneration and the proposed Rotherhithe bridge.

‘Demand more trees’ says councillor PECKHAM: A councillor has urged residents to “pull their fingers out” and make demands from Southwark Council to plant more trees in their neighbourhoods.

Cllr Jamille Mohammed said he was “delighted” that nine new trees have been planted around Rye Lane, after he requested the funding.

The newly-planted trees are located in Cerise Road as well

as outside Halifax and Boots.

The Lane ward councillor said: “Planting trees improves the quality of the air we breathe and reduces the incidences of asthma and other respiratory problems. There are pools of money out there that council has for things like this, we just need to get the message out that these are the things we want and that money needs to be spent on.”

Police search for Igho ROTHERHITHE

POLICE have released an image of a man they urgently want to speak to about the attempted murder of a bystander outside a barber shop on Rotherhithe New Road.

Officers need to trace Igho Ejeta, 29, who is described as black, 5foot 11inches tall, of proportionate build and having a long scar that runs across his

face and the bridge of his nose.

Another man is already serving a life sentence for his role in the incident which happened on May 8 2015.

Detective Constable Jo Ross, from the Trident and Area Crime Command, said: "Although we have one man safely behind bars, we urgently need to trace Ejeta in connection with this incident.

"We would ask anyone with information to come forward in the strictest confidence and help us find this man."

Trident launched an investigation after a 38-year-old woman was shot in the leg whilst she was sitting in the barber's shop alongside other customers and children.

The woman was an innocent bystander who was caught up in a violent altercation between several men that began outside the shop.

The fight continued inside and Joel Johnson, 27, of Baildon Street, SE8 appeared in the doorway and produced a handgun before opening fire.

The bullet passed through the woman's leg and was later found on the floor.

She was taken to a south London hospital where she was treated for her

injuries.

Officers carried out extensive enquiries to identify Johnson as the gunman.

On 17 June 2015, Johnson was arrested by armed officers on suspicion of attempted murder and possession of a firearm. He was taken to a south London police station and was charged with numerous firearms offences.

He appeared for trial at the Old Bailey and was found guilty of multiple offences on 14 December 2015.

He was sentenced to life imprisonment to serve a minimum of 14 years for attempted murder, life imprisonment to serve a minimum of seven-and-a-half years for wounding with intent (to run concurrently) and life imprisonment to serve a minimum of six years for possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life (to run concurrently).

Johnson had previously pleaded guilty at the same court in September 2015 to possession of a firearm and possession of ammunition.

For those offences he was sentenced to seven years and three years' imprisonment to run concurrently.

Should we remain part of Europe’s co-operative democratic structures or should we put ourselves outside them?

Most people do not realise that many environmental and health protections that we enjoy in Southwark were created by the EU’s democratic institutions.

The drive to increase Southwark’s recycling rate to 50% comes from the EU, which set a UK recycling target of 50% by 2020. Before this, Southwark’s recycling rate was a miserable 3%.

One of the biggest sources of fatal diseases in Southwark is transport pollution, which also damages children’s lungs. The EU ensured lead was removed from petrol and has set legal clean air standards for Southwark that the government is obliged to reach by 2020.

The UK had one of the lowest levels of clean renewable energy and again the EU has set a 15% UK target which we also have to reach by 2020.

The fact that the Thames has fish again and our beaches are sewage-free is due to clean- water legislation agreed democratically by EU countries.

With all these positives, one has to ask why the five UK billionaire tabloidowners hate the social, environmental and worker protections that the EU gives us? The Evening Standard asked Rupert Murdoch why he hated the EU so much? He said “That is easy.

Because when I go into Downing Street they do what I say, when I go to Brussels they take no notice”.

So rather than do Murdoch’s bidding and destroy our environmental and human rights, listen to what Churchill said about Europe after World War II, that caused so much devastation in Southwark.

He said: “We must proclaim the mission of a united Europe. A Europe where people of every country will think of being European. Wherever they go in Europe, they will truly feel “here I am at home”. “ I will be voting Yes to European peace and democracy on June 23rd. I hope you will also.

No communication from Post Office

JUST WHAT has Walworth done to deserve the loss of a decent postal service?

Not content with the threatened loss of the Crown Post Office on the Walworth Road and its replacement with an inferior franchise plus the threatened closure of the Sorting Office on Crampton Street and having to trek over to the Bricklayers Arms just to pick up a parcel, we now find that two of our not very many post boxes on the Walworth Road have been closed - just like that.

It would not be so bad if there was ever anyone that you could approach at the Royal Mail or the Post Office to ask about getting them re-opened but any dialogue with either is almost completely impossible – the Post Office refused to attend any local meetings about the franchise idea even when asked by the Community Council.

Any help for those wanting to post a letter in Walworth would be very welcome!

THE NEW Fisher ground was a popular place for the local kids before the new ground was built, it was left open and the kids thought they could play on it.

If 50 people played on it for hours Southwark Council should bear in mind that local kids need a place to play football that's free.

Walk to school

LIVING STREETS’ Walk to School Week is over for another year and we’d like to thank everyone in Southwark who contributed to making it a massive success.

Over 2,000 pupils from over 70 classrooms in Southwark joined in with pupils across the UK to enjoy the many benefits of walking to school.

We know that schools become healthier and happier places when children walk to school. The Chief Medical Officer recommends that children are active for 60 minutes a day and walking to school is a free, accessible and easy way for children to contribute to this target.

Teachers tells us that pupils who walk to school are more alert and ready to learn than those who are driven, plus when children walk to school there is less congestion and pollution on local roads, making school gates a safer place.

Despite these benefits, the number of children walking to school is in decline with just 46 per cent of children making the journey on foot.

At Living Streets, we are committed to reversing this decline and preventing the problems associated with inactivity, including childhood obesity. Walk to School Week is a great way to start so we’re really happy that so many pupils in Southwark joined in.

Just because the week of celebration is over, it doesn’t mean families have to stop. We’re thrilled that schools across Southwark already take part in WOW – our year-round walk to school challenge, so they can continue to experience the benefits of walking to school all

Well deserved Sam

I WISH to offer my congratulations to Sam King MBE, World War II veteran and Southwark’s first black Mayor, who was awarded the Freedom of the Borough last week.

Prior to being elected as Mayor of Southwark in 1983, the only serving black Mayor in London at the time, Sam made many invaluable contributions to our borough and country. He served in the Royal Air Force for seven years from 1944 to 1951 and was one of the driving forces behind the emergence of the first Notting Hill Carnival.

We have been campaigning for Mr King to be recognised with the Freedom of the Borough for the last three years, so I wish to extend my thanks to Cllr Peter John, former Southwark Mayor Cllr Dora DixonFyle and Southwark Council for bestowing Sam with the recognition he truly deserves.

I encourage Southwark Council not to rest on its laurels and continue to recognise those individuals of the same calibre as Mr King from across the whole borough and all communities in Southwark every year. The Council should go one step further by publishing their criteria for a Freedom of the Borough Award on their website so more residents can nominate worthy individuals like Sam King for the borough’s highest civil honour.

MP for Dulwich & West Norwood AIR TAXATION is one of the issues most frequently raised by residents on the doorstep and by small business owners whenever I meet with them in my constituency – it even came up last week during a visit to a local primary school!

People on lower incomes have been hit particularly hard by the Tories who have raised VAT and increased taxes for the lowest paid, whilst at the same time cutting taxes for their millionaire supporters. Many small business owners across my constituency are also frustrated that while they pay their taxes, too many big businesses get away without paying their fair share.

And while the consequences of unfair taxes are bad for residents in South London, they are even worse for developing countries, who lose more each year in tax avoidance than they gain in international aid – an astonishing situation. The recent ‘Panama Papers’ leak of thousands of documents from one law firm shone a light on the extent of tax avoidance across the globe – it should not be possible to hide behind the secrecy of tax havens, yet far too many people do – there is one office block in the Cayman Islands which is host to more than 12,000 companies!

Last year I stood on a platform pledging to reverse the Tories' cut in income tax for those earning more than £150,000 a year, cut income tax for 24 million people with a new 10p starting rate, reduce taxes for small businesses to help them take on new employees and grow and introduce tax breaks for businesses which start to pay the London Living Wage. More recently, I have been asking the Prime Minister in Parliament to ensure that all British Overseas Territories keep public registers of the owners of companies registered there, to ensure more transparency in tax havens.

The UK should be leading the way on fair taxes for both British workers and British companies, cracking down on abuse in British Overseas Territories and pressing for international cooperation to root out abuse abroad. I will continue to press the Tory government on both fronts over the next year, and to campaign for a fairer approach to taxation.

Canadian circus rolls in

MANY YOUNG people of today will know the story of Peter Pan from the Disney film, and know nothing of the back story. A new exhibition – Take Me To Neverland - at the Florence Nightingale Museum will in fill in all those gaps with artifacts from old stage productions (Tinker Bell’s bell); early editions of the book; classic illustrations from those early books by Mabel Lucie Atwell and Arthur Rackham; a collection of children’s letters sent to Peter Pan from 1906-14, and a selection of Peter Pan memorabilia never before seen in public.

The collection, which has been loaned by Great Ormond Street Hospital to whom author J.M. Barrie bequeathed the Peter Pan rights to, will examine the true story behind Barrie’s most famous character.

David Barrie, great-great-nephew of J M Barrie, says: ‘This exhibition is going to challenge the saccharine image of Peter Pan that Disney propagated. My great-great-uncle was a complicated man, and the dark side of his imagination is the key to understanding the real power of his greatest creation, Peter Pan. I’m delighted that this exhibition, filled with marvellous images, will help to set the record straight.’

Since it began, Cirque Alfonse has been exploring traditional iconic Quebec images and integrating them into a truly innovative form of contemporary acrobatics. In the Lanaudière region of Quebec, the Carabinier-Lépine family and their close friends joined forces in 2005, and the following year they created La Brunante which became the foundation for Timber! which premiered in 2010.

This highly original production became an undeniable success with more than 300 performances in 13 countries to date.

I WANT to begin at the end and say this is going to be a Five Star Review because the whole meal was perfect from start to finish for both of us, writes Michael Holland ...

I remember reviewing Napura several years ago and recall thinking that this place, that was set up more like a sandwich and coffee café, should be so much more, as the cooking was just superb.

Jump forward to now and Napura has changed beyond recognition. The café is now a fully-fledged restaurant with surroundings and atmosphere that befits the cooking that is still as good, and that is because it is still a family run business and it is still Mama doing the cooking.

We were greeted and seated by son Carlos who was smoothly and

elegantly looking after front of house.

He said he had some recommendations for us and would like us to leave it to him – an offer we couldn’t refuse.

Like all good hosts Carlos poured us each a glass of white wine from the Douro region of Portugal that opened up and freshened the palate in readiness for the feast ahead. Bread, olive oil and balsamic vinegar, plus olives with a good chilli kick were provided, a complimentary dish that all tables were given. That is a very nice touch.

First up was Pastel de Bacalhan (Cod in pastry); nicely sized torpedoes of fish and potato in a soft but crisp coating that came with a white dipping sauce. These almost melted in the mouth and were quite exquisite. Cod is very popular in Portugal and Carlos told us there is a saying that they have a ‘thousand ways to cook cod’. As Nina tucked into her portion with relish she told me that I should learn some!

While eating these a large Mediterranean Salad was laid between us, quickly pursued by Gambas Salteadas (Sautéd King Prawns). This felt like Portuguese tapas - a way of

eating that we both enjoy - lots of small dishes that keep coming and coming.

Bacalhau à Bràs (Scrambled Cod and Egg) joined the earlier plates of delicious food, a surprising dish that none of us had encountered before and one that could be tried at home.

Because Carlos wanted us to sample the best his mother can do, he was giving us smaller main courses, so the Bacalhau à Bràs would normally be served with fries. With so many courses coming he did not want to overload us, but by now I was getting fearful of just how many more there were to come! Every now and again Mama would appear from the kitchen to place more meals on the counter for Carlos to deliver to their rightful owners.

We looked at each other wondering when the next plates would be ours just as two dishes of Robalo na Brasa (Chargrilled Sea Bass with Sautéd Vegetables) turned up! The fish had been halved and shared on two plates for us but would normally come whole with rice. Carlos informed us that it had been grilled simply, seasoned with only salt, but its taste spoke of much more. The delicate, sweet flesh was

delectable, and we both remarked on how good the vegetables were.

The restaurant was full now and had the comforting hum of people enjoying food and a quiet soundscape of Portuguese music in the background. I had slowed down knowing there was a meat dish coming for me, and across the table I could see that Nina was flagging. All we could talk about was how good the food was.

Carlos told us that the recipes were from the old country and passed down through the years in the family. This was like home from home cooking at its very best.

Eventually my meat dish came: Carne de Porco à Alentejana (Sautéd Pork, Clams & Prawns). This, I was told, was the most popular dish on the menu and I could see why. There was nothing not to like: meat, seafood, herbs and vegetables all in a good sauce. Plus a glass of rather robust and fruity red wine was poured for me, a Porca de Murça 2013, to ensure that everything was just so.

I was truly done in by now, but in a good way. I was pleased that Carlos did not bring the homemade chips that usually accompanies the dish…

Cat grins and sleepy eyes, we were roused from our reverie with the dessert menu. Still unable to speak I motioned a plea for mercy, while Nina said that we needed a few minutes.

After that few minutes I was in for the Delicia Exótica, a layered cake that involved lots of lovely things. It lived up to its name, but even Carlos has not been let into this little exotic secret; all he could tell us was that it had mango in there somewhere. Nina had Pastel de Nata, a custard tart that she loves.

Our journey home to the joys of lying down on a settee to recover was spent talking about the joys of that banquet.

Look not at the total price because, as mentioned, we were not having the full size meals, but just a sample of each to get a broader view of the offerings in Napura. And there are so many more scrumptious dishes to be had that we will be trying when we return.

I have nothing against restaurants employing people with their Level 2 NVQs in Cooking, but you will never replicate the years of experience that comes from the skills that are learnt over time in the family kitchen. I cannot think of a better restaurant in Nunhead right now.

Help before the welfare state history

Peckham Settlement, set up by a public school, ‘created London’s first nursery’

THINK OF early 20th century London and most will immediately picture The Blitz, rationing and rubble, while in political terms, it ushered in the creation of the welfare state, writes Owen Sheppard...

But how many people alive today would recognize that such projects for creating safety nets were being tinkered with at the turn of the century by a charity based in Peckham?

It was the ‘settlement movement’ that originated and in 1896, and made one of its early homes in the borough of Camberwell, that gave rise to the first incarnation of meals on wheels, the first London children’s nursery, and the first ‘Unemployment Insurance Scheme’.

Its history is recalled by former Peckham Settlement chair, 86-yearold Paddy Cribb, who remained a trustee until 2005.

The most famous of the original settlements is Toynbee Hall in the East End of London, and was founded

by Oxford University. But the movement more generally was started

by Home Counties public schools during the “depressed Victorian times”, who also led missions in Birmingham, Sheffield and Edinburgh. Paddy says the concept was to help people in deprived areas and try to “innovate new solutions to social problems”.

The Peckham Settlement first came about in 1896, and was driven by Miss Frances Dove, head mistress of Wycombe Abbey girls’ school in Buckinghamshire; later made Dame Frances Dove. She set up the first south London settlement in a six-anda-half acre district known as St Hilda’s in the Parish of Camberwell, with its main house located off Albany Road.

“She had a great conscience,” Paddy said, “She wanted the girls’ school to set up a settlement of their own while boys’ schools were doing the same.

By 1897 there were 41 girls’ and boys’ public schools giving up their time to help educate and care for the people of Peckham, which, it seems, was a particularly poverty-ridden place. Paddy cited one age-old factoid that the area’s population density was “1,000 individuals to the acre” compared to a national average of 80 to the acre.

That made the Dickensian slums of London more than ten times more tightly-packed than the typical Victorian English town. All of this contributed to the spread of disease and a reliance on crime to salvage an income. “Peckham had no district nurse, no anti-natal or dental aids, and often no school clinics or milk supplies,” Paddy said.

The Settlement volunteers would

also visit young offenders’ institutes to educate and instill faith in the Church of England. “In those days young people could get the harshest punishments for really very petty crimes and be locked away for years,” Paddy said.

The Peckham Settlement is also credited with setting up London’s first nursery school in 1913 for children whose parents needed to work.

Whilst it prevailed throughout the 20th century, the Settlement even operated as a charity-run job centre, giving free advice and expertise on how to write CV and letters to employers.

But In 2012 the Settlement sadly went into administration and was liquidated to settle its debts, which also meant surrendering its Goldsmith Road property where it had resided since 1930.

Though now, with its bills paid, the Peckham Settlement is due celebrate a re-launch on June 16 at its new home in Peckham Library, and reopen the following week.

Batty haul can’t halt painful loss

A TEN wicket match haul from Surrey skipper Gareth Batty wasn’t enough for his side to secure their first win of the County Championship season.

FOR THE second week on the trot a Dulwich Cricket Club contest was decided in the last over, but this time they were pipped at the post by Worcester Park.

Last Saturday Worcester Park won by a margin of five wickets after chasing down Dulwich’s total of 256/8 with just three ball to spare.

The previous weekend Dulwich had pipped Bank of England to win off the last ball of the game, but seven days on the tables were reversed.

In Dulwich’s total openers Ed Stolle and Tom Savill set the standard with an opening stand of 91, with the latter eventual ending up top scorer of the day with 94 off 106 balls.

Ed Towner came in at the fall of the first wicket and although he helped put on 66 runs, at a slow pace, both he and Savill fell within a few overs of each other as the Dulwich innings began to stutter.

Lynn man Driscoll to make pro début

EX-LYNN ABC man Charlie Driscoll will make his début as a pro fighter on June 9 at York Hall, Bethnal Green.

The Lightweight fighter has signed terms with Frank Warren and as a result his bout will be shown on the promoter’s Boxnation channel.

A familiar face from the Camberwell gym will be guiding Driscoll as the amateur club’s head coach Samm Mullins will be in the corner of the 22-year-old through the pro ranks.

Driscoll was a six time national champion as an amateur and his father Mick Driscoll is currently head coach of the England schoolboys boxing squad.

But with wickets in hand Rob Waite and Amer Saleem were able to go for their shots and levelled the score off the last ball of the 49th over.

The winning run came three balls later.

FISHER BOXER Sacha Hickey will be looking to be crowned schools champion this weekend when she travels to Grantham for the ABA finals.

The under 43kg fighter, who turns thirteen this year, is highly rated by club coach Steve Hiser and she will be looking to pick up a national title in Lincolnshire.

The Bermondsey based boxer, who also plays football for Millwall Lionesses, will take on Bobbi Bowman, from Houghton & District ABC, after she stopped Shevaun Hathaway from Tamworth ABC last weekend in Liverpool.

This weekend’s events are taking place at Grantham Meres Leisure Centre on Saturday, with boxing due to get underway at 1pm.

EX-MILLWALL STOPPER Preston Edwards has signed a one year deal with Dulwich Hamlet for the upcoming season.

Edwards played the latter part of last season at Champion Hill, including the play-off final defeat against East Thurrock, but he will return to the club on a contract basis for the new campaign.

Hamlet boss Gavin Rose told the club’s website: “We're happy to have retained the services of Preston, who signed a pre contract that will start next season once his existing contract with Ebbsfleet runs out.”

With eight of last season’s squad already off to pastures new Edwards looks set to be joined by Leonean Kargbo, a former Welling player who has played international football for Sierra Leone.

The 34-year-old told BBC Sport: “I'm happy to sign for Dulwich Hamlet and I know I can still play well.

"I'll do my best to help the club achieve its objectives next season."

Hamlet’s planned pre-season game against Welling has now been postponed, with a view to being arranged, and instead the Pink and Blues will play a home fixture against Norwich City on July 12.

Dulwich’s pre-season gets underway on July 9 when they take on Bromley at Champion Hill.

The one wicket defeat against Somerset at Taunton this week will be harder to take as the Kennington side look set to be crowned the victors, only to be defied by a stubborn unbeaten last wicket stand of 31 between Jack Leach and Tim Groenewald.

Surrey posted a total of 264 in their first innings which looked a much better score than it first appeared when Batty ran through the Somerset side,

taking seven wickets for 32 runs, as the home team mustered 102 in response.

The visitors second innings was hardly stellar, mustering just 138, but with 300 runs to defend Surrey look hot favourites when Somerset batted second time around.

Although the home side made a better fist of things when batting again the game looked to be going Surrey’s way when the ninth wicket fell for 270, but the Somerset tail enders dug in and clinched an unlikely win that leaves Surrey bottom of County Championship Division One. St. John's Ambulance 'Stick It' First Aid Workshop

WITH THE Millwall FC first team flying the flag on the pitch with plenty of success in the playoff campaign, off the field the Community Development Team continue to provide exceptional intervention opportunities for the community.

In a week of opportunity and success, a group of young people from the Abbey Manor John Evelyn Campus in Brockley, were presented with their St. John’s Ambulance ‘Stick it’ Emergency

First Aid Certificates. After completing a one day intense workshop covering modules on Resuscitation, Recovery Position, Treating Major Wounds, and Communication the youngsters were very proud of their achievements. One of the students commented on the day saying; “I now feel confident that I can save someone’s life. The roads are dangerous, but now I have skills to use if I need too” Powerful words, from an empowered young person.

and participants travelled to HM YOI Feltham, for the Football Changes Lives Graduation Day. The celebratory event concludes the 10 week delivery by Millwall Community Trust, and Active Communities Network where a VRQ Level 1 Using Sport to Tackle Youth Crime, and weekly football coaching sessions were delivered.

The goal of the project is to engage with the young men upon their release back into our communities, and create realistic action plans to work towards in regards to

volunteering, mentoring, education, training, and employment.

To conclude a week of good news, a Millwall side picked up silverware once again at the monthly London Premier League Kicks Tournament, this time held at the Lions Centre.

With home advantage, and lots of goals on the day, the Millwall side represented by young people from the Abbey Manor Broadoak Campus, finished in both first and second place. Alongside the football tournament on the day, Southwark Police attended and supported the

day through workshop delivery on ‘What is a Gang’ and great engagement with the staff and young people start to finish.

Community Development Officer Tom Rolt who manages the programme commented on these great events by saying; “This work goes on day after day, week after the week under the radar. We are proud of the work we do, and very grateful to have fantastic partnerships that assist us in changing the lives of hundreds of young people in our communities.”

EXPECTATIONS WERE high among Lions fans as the campaign began at New Meadow with goals from Lee Gregory and Steve Morison handing Neil Harris' side a 2-1 victory, However, two home defeats in the league against Coventry and Barnsley and an extra-time Capital One Cup loss to Barnet quickly had most re-setting those expectations. David Forde was the fall guy after the 3-2 defeat to the Tykes, losing his place in goal to Jordan Archer as Millwall tried to stop the rot at Scunthorpe United.

They got a point and a clean sheet but the home hoodoo remained a problem when Chesterfield eased their way to a 2-0 win at The Den a week later. .

The month of August was a shock to the system for many, but September would see the Lions begin to roar – and finally claim that precious first home win.

Season Review

It was a season of transition for Millwall that almost ended with promotion to the Championship.

JUST 2,050 fans saw a 1-0 win over Peterborough United in the first round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

Shaun Williams' injury-time header meant the Lions advanced, but the night was a landmark moment in the season with a first home win finally arriving.

There were six more points collected at Crewe Alexandra and Port Vale, the former courtesy of a sublime hat-trick from exciting prospect Aiden O'Brien.

The final month of the year opened with consecutive 2-1 defeats, to promotion-chasing Burton Albion in the league and Wycombe Wanderers, who scored a 94th-minute winner, in the second round of the FA Cup. That denied Millwall a potential money-spinning thirdround tie.

One competition the club were thriving in, though, was the JPT. Goals from Morison and Williams sent Millwall through to a Southern Section final against Oxford United in front of 1,551 away fans at Southend United on December 8.

when Southend United claimed all three points in a Den clash that Millwall really shouldn’t have lost. A week later, goals from Jimmy Abdou, Williams and Morison helped see off Rochdale and meant a first home league win of the season.

Wigan Athletic snatched a point from the jaws of defeat thanks to Will Grigg's 92nd-minute equaliser in a 2-2 draw to end the month, but the season was up and running – in October, the charge up the table would begin.

Conference North outfit AFC Fylde presented a possible banana skin in the FA Cup for Millwall as November got underway, but goals from O'Brien, Gregory and Morison ensured a smooth passage to round two, where they would meet Wycombe Wanderers.

Gregory became the first Millwall player to hit four goals in a game since Teddy Sheringham in 1991 three days later when the Lions got themselves on the right side of a 5-3 scoreline, this time in the JPT against Plymouth Argyle. That meant they qualified for the Southern Section semi-finals.

Harris' charges were now hitting goals for fun and that continued when they beat struggling Colchester United 4-1. Gregory was on target once more, while Shane Ferguson, with a brace, and Byron Webster,

The league form continued to splutter, however, as after a postponed game against Oldham Athletic, Gillingham took all three points in a pre-Christmas clash at The Den. Archer was shown a straight red

The unbeaten run came to a halt at a miserable Highbury Stadium in Fleetwood three days later. But the Lions bounced back on their own patch when a memorable double save Jordan Archer, whose influence was growing, contributed to a 1-0 victory over Bury after Shaun Williams’ third goal of the season.

The Den woes continued on Boxing Day as Walsall left with a single-goal victory, but just 48 hours later the Lions returned to Roots Hall and romped to a 4-0 victory over Southend.

OCTOBER BEGAN with an eight-goal thriller as Peterborough defeated the Lions 53.

Byron Webster, Tony Craig and Mark Beevers scored a succession of headers on a bizarre day at London Road, but that was not to be enough, as the Posh rattled in a quintet of strikes, ensuring that Millwall headed back down the A1 pointless.

George Savile joined on loan from Wolves prior to the JPT clash with Northampton Town and his arrival coincided with the beginning of a nine-match unbeaten run. The Cobblers were easily beaten as O'Brien and Gregory netted in a 2-0 win, before the same score was repeated when Millwall overcame a lacklustre Swindon Town.

A 1-1 draw with struggling Blackpool, that included a red card for Carlos Edwards, was followed up by an impressive victory at Sheffield United when an O'Brien double ensured three points for Millwall in a 2-1 win.

The month ended with a 2-0 defeat of Doncaster Rovers, before a feisty contest with Bradford City, in which Craig picked up a serious knee injury that would rule him out for six months, ended goalless.

A fruitful month meant that the Lions were now on the cusp of the top six.

THE NEW Year started off on another low at Oakwell where Barnsley completed the league double over their opponents. In incessant rain, Morison restored parity after Sam Winnall’s opener, before Adam Hammill won it for Lee Johnson’s side.

Jed Wallace was then recruited on-loan from Wolves, managed by former Den boss Kenny Jackett, and he would provide the creative spark for improved collective form.

Wallace made his debut in the 2-1 win over Oldham at Boundary Park, playing a part in Gregory’s goal after two minutes before Morison scored with five minutes left to secure three precious points up north.

A first-leg JPT area final defeat at home to League Two Oxford, when Forde’s mistake would have consequences for his first-team place, was followed by a 3-1 home win against Port Vale, with Morison adding a third after Gregory’s brace.

A hard-fought 2-1 win at Chesterfield in Millwall’s first visit to the Proact Stadium came before a frustrating home draw with then-bottom Crewe after Gregory had missed a late penalty.

But the Lions were finally in the top six.

DESPITE A 1-0 victory over Oxford in the second leg of the JPT area final, the damage had been done in the first leg. That meant the League Two side set up a Wembley date with Barnsley after a 2-1 aggregate win.

The confidence after the performance, though, coursed through Millwall and they recorded a thumping win over promotion candidates Walsall at the Banks Stadium. Mahlon Romeo was a surprise debutant at right-back, and the youngster capped his first senior appearance off in style scoring Millwall’s second in the 3-0 win.

A hat-trick of away wins was completed when Gregory’s nineteenth goal of the season was enough to see off Rochdale 1-0. That made it five successive away victories in all competitions.

The midweek visit of Scunthorpe brought the Lions crashing back down to earth in what was a dire performance from start to finish on a cold evening at The Den. Archer then produced the save and one of the moments of the season to keep out Beevers’ unconventional back pass with an even more unconventional header in the 3-0 win over Peterborough.

A 1-1 draw at the Keepmoat against Doncaster wrapped up an impressive month for the Lions.

SECOND-PLACED Wigan came to The Den on a Tuesday evening that should have seen Millwall claim all three points after Sam Morsy had been sent off.

Instead, the Lions were forced to settle for a goalless draw. Harris’ men dominated the entire 90 minutes, but were unable to break the deadlock.

Millwall then trashed Blackpool 3-0 with goals from Gregory, Wallace and a Morison penalty The Lions were looking comfortable a week later at the County Ground, having taken a 20 lead against Swindon. Unable to kill the game off, they succumbed to a cruel addedtime equaliser when Michael Doughty pounced to finish a cross.

There was a potentially huge blow when Wallace, who had become such a fan favourite, was recalled by parent club Wolves.

A deal, though, had already been agreed for Chris Taylor and he scored the winner against Sheffield United just two minutes into his second debut for the club.

Harris decided to rest Gregory for the trip to Bradford and that would turn out to be costly as Steven Davies headed home a late winner for the Lions’ promotion rivals.

Easter Monday saw league leaders Burton visit The Den and, live on Sky, Millwall put on a show. Goals from O’Brien and Gregory sealed a thunderous win and laid down a marker with the top two still in Millwall’s sights.

HARRIS WAS unhappy with a goalless draw at Colchester, questioning the focus of some of his younger players.

But in the next game, Ben Thompson, whose work rate and desire could rarely be questioned, scored the Lions’ goal of the season with a 25yard half-volley to equalise against Shrewsbury before Morison and Gregory netted to earn a 3-1 win.

Millwall had a real shot at second place heading into the trip to the Ricoh Arena to face Coventry.

Webster gave the visitors the lead but Williams was then sent off for a headbutt offence. Millwall defended desperately, but two goals in nine

second-half minutes effectively ended their chances of automatic promotion.

Morison scored a sublime lobbed effort to secure a 1-0 win over Fleetwood before grabbing another away to Bury in the 3-1 win in which Taylor got a double.

Next, Oldham were all but safe from the threat of relegation and it showed. The Lions needed only a point to guarantee a top-six place but got all three after a 3-0 win.

Gregory scored his 25th goal of the season in the 98th minute to snatch a last-gasp 2-1 win at Gillingham after an extraordinary finish to the game. Romeo was sent off, and that would later prove significant.

Millwall got off to an awful start in the first leg of the play-off semi-final at Bradford, Joe Martin handling to give Tony McMahon the chance to score from the spot. Less than two minutes later, however, Gregory equalised.

Morison and Martin then shocked the hosts with two more goals before the break. Five days later, the Lions finished the job.

Gregory’s opener was cancelled out by Jamie Proctor’s strike but the game petered out before a pitch invasion ruined any chance Bradford had of recovering the 4-2 aggregate deficit.

Before the final against Barnsley, Webster limped away from the warm-up, Ashley Fletcher scored inside three minutes, Adam Hammill doubled the lead and Martin went off injured. There was a mountain to climb and, despite Beevers’ goal injecting some hope, Millwall just didn’t have the equipment to scale it.

Lloyd Isgrove scored a third in the 74th minute to destroy the dreams of more than 30,000 Millwall fans at Wembley.

Despite the defeat, it was a season of progress and thoughts now turn to summer recruitment and another expected promotion bid in 2016-17.

IT WAS heartbreak again at Wembley for Millwall as they lost 3-1 to Barnsley in the League One play-off final.

Analysis: What went wrong?

After such a promising season, and a promising win over Bradford in the semi-final, many hoped, and even expected, the Lions to return to the Championship at the first time of asking.

Yet, on the day, it was never meant to be as the better side won.

Here’s where the match was lost for Millwall.

POOR OPENING 20 MINUTES. Millwall had started brightly, going straight from the kick-off to win a free-kick in an attacking position.

Chris Taylor whipped it in but Mark Beevers could not direct his header goalwards.

And just 30 seconds later, Barnsley took the lead.

The Lions failed to deal with the resulting goal-kick, allowing Barnsley to win both the first and second ball.

Ashley Fletcher profited from Sam Winnall’s header and the on-loan Manchester United player held off three defenders before coolly finishing low to the corner past Jordan Archer.

Millwall slowly got back into the game and took control but were unable to trouble Adam Davies in the Barnsley goal with the Tykes defence dealing with long balls aimed towards Steve Morison.

Then, for the second time inside 20 minutes, the Lions were punished.

Adam Hammill picked up the ball just inside the Millwall half and, with defenders backing off, was allowed to unleash a shot from 25 yards that curled into the top right corner.

For Millwall, the game looked over so soon after it had begun. In fact, Barnsley looked in the mood to run riot.

DEFENSIVE FRAILTIES Problems in Millwall’s defence started before kick-off when Byron Webster left the warm-up and headed straight down the tunnel with physio Bobby Bacic. Millwall had planned all week with Webster in their side.

His loss was badly felt in both penalty areas and, as the first goal showed, outside them.

Club captain Tony Craig came in but it was asking a lot to fill the boots of Webster who had been a key player for Millwall, particularly in the second half of the season.

And it was Craig who lost the first battle in the lead up to Barnsley’s opening goal, as Winnall got the vital touch. Fletcher then shrugged off Carlos Edwards far too easily to make space for a shot.

Edwards’ defending was once again questionable before the second goal as he and Ben Thompson allowed Hammill time and space to pick his shot and double Barnsley’s lead. It was still a brilliant strike but Millwall ought to have known about his quality.

Things went from bad to worse for the Lions when Joe Martin limped off with a calf injury in the 43rd minute.

WEMBLEY HEARTACHE Beevers sees Lions progress despite defeat

Despite seeming to have worked their way back into the game through Beevers’ 34th-minute goal, Millwall couldn’t force another. And their defensive organisation was once again a shambles when the smallest man on the pitch, Lloyd Isgrove, lost Edwards and got his head to the ball before Archer who had come out to claim it.

The goal left Millwall players standing around looking bewildered – but that was the story of the day.

FAILURE TO TAKE CHANCES Barnsley’s opener came just 30 seconds after Beevers had missed a good chance to give Millwall the lead and it seemed to set the tone for the day.

In the space between Barnsley’s first two goals, Millwall had chances to forge openings as they got the ball forward directly and deep into Barnsley’s half, but their communication seemed off.

Morison, Millwall’s main attacking weapon, worked extremely hard, but his team-mates didn’t appear to be on the same page as numerous flick-ons fell to Barnsley defenders. The other point was that Barnsley knew Millwall would play that way, so boss Paul Heckingbottom could set up his side and ensure his defenders were in positions to mop up second balls.

chance and pulled one back through Beevers, many fans would have expected it to be a turning point, but the second half brought more of the same frustrations.

The Lions had plenty of possession after the break without ever really looking like they could regularly penetrate the Tykes defence. Barnsley could also sit back and hit Millwall on the break, with Hammill and Isgrove providing width and pace.

did stretch the Barnsley defence, Morison did well to get a cross in but Aiden O’Brien’s shot was saved.

Millwall had just nine shots to Barnsley’s sixteen over the course of the game, and though only one fewer was on target, the clinical finishing of the Tykes’ front line proved the difference.

Millwall, meanwhile, just didn’t have a plan B and that’s something Neil Harris will need to look at over the summer.

MILLWALL DEFENDER Mark Beevers agrees the club have taken “a massive step forward” this season despite losing to Barnsley in the League One play-off final last Sunday.

The Lions went into the game confident they could win immediate promotion back to the Championship, but Barnsley denied them that chance with a commanding display.

However, Beevers, who has yet to decide whether to sign a new deal with the club, is optimistic about the future.

“The manager has said this season has been a massive step forward,” he explained. “We’ve bonded as a team and each game we’ve gone into, whether we’ve played badly, we’ve won, lost and drawn together.

“There have been times during the season when we’ve not played as well as we could have done but still picked up points and I think that speaks volumes for the lads and how far they’ve come.

“It wasn’t to be. It was a disappointing day but all in all it was a good season.”

Beevers scored at Wembley to reduce the 2-0 lead Barnsley had raced into inside the opening 20 minutes but Lloyd Isgrove scored a third sixteen minutes from time to help his side to a historic win.

Barnsley-born defender Beevers stressed the squad were calm leading up to the contest, but admitted the timing and manner of the three goals they conceded made it difficult to recover.

“If you’re going to lose a final you might as well finish 21st out of 24 teams in the league,” Beevers said.

“It’s a sinking feeling and giving Barnsley two goals so early killed us. We did get back into it and were on top towards the end of the first half but then in the second half we killed ourselves again with the third goal.

“We know we’ve got players in our team that can hurt other teams.

We came out in the second half with confidence, though I think we could have created more chances, to be honest.

“We were quite relaxed in the camp, we weren’t getting ahead of ourselves. We know what we’re capable of. We can keep clean sheets and create chances and put the ball in the back of the net.

“But it was just one of those days when things didn’t quite fall for us and fell for them, they got three goals. It is quite uncharacteristic of us to concede three goals.”

IN THE end crushing disappointment, but the realisation Barnsley were the better side.

Was there anything else Millwall could have done to win? In terms of effort, no. But Neil Harris’ side didn’t have, or play with, the quality of their opponents.

Mark Beevers, who pulled a goal back with Barnsley threatening to run away with the contest, and Steve Morison were outstanding. But otherwise there was little inspiration or creativity from the Lions.

Millwall fans outnumbered their rivals at Wembley, and later there was trouble on the upper tier, but on the pitch it was Barnsley who often outnumbered their opponents.

Millwall’s tactics didn’t take a lot of working out, with Beevers angling numerous long balls to Morison who won the majority of them over Alfie Mawson. But Barnsley were wise to it, and they got players around the centreback to sweep up the second balls before Chris Taylor or Lee Gregory could get to them.

Barnsley had more pace in their side, with Adam Hammill and Lloyd Isgrove constant menaces. Taylor and Shane Ferguson, meanwhile, struggled to get anything from their opponents meaning there was little quality supply to the strikers. It was no surprise this was one of Gregory’s quietest games of the season.

There will be bitterness now at the thought it is trips to Rochdale and Northampton next season rather than Newcastle or Aston Villa.

Then again, maybe tests like that are too much for this side at this stage of its development, and maybe too early in his management career for Harris to be coming up against the likes of Rafael Benitez. But that reflection will come much later.

On Sunday, any strategy Harris had was blown apart after three minutes when Ashley Fletcher scored, and it looked like Barnsley were going to give the Lions a mauling when Hammill doubled the lead in the 19th minute.

Millwall fans digested that shock before raising the noise levels again, more than 30,000 of them urging their side to attack. They got some reward when Beevers scored and it felt like between then and half-time was Millwall’s chance to level.

But they couldn’t discomfort Barnsley, who kept their opponent’s at arm’s length, apart from a couple of late efforts from Taylor and Aiden O’Brien.

That was the signal for some Millwall fans on the upper tier to break through security barriers with fights appearing to break out. It was a bitter finale and a hugely disappointing end to the season.

Harris answered “next question” when pressed on the incidents afterwards, but he stressed there were no excuses for a performance that frustrated. Still, there

On Sunday, Millwall could have done with his power and pace against a Barnsley side that had plenty of both.

hamstring problem when he took part in the warm-up. However, at 2.30pm, he was spotted heading to the players’ tunnel with club physio Bobby Bacic.

Moments later, Harris shook hands with Tony Craig who then joined the back four’s specific preparations with Dave Livermore.

It was Craig’s first start since October and it was a worry that the right side of

the defence was missing its two most consistent performers this year, Webster and Romeo. Webster’s withdrawal also meant a place on the bench for 19-yearold striker Jamie Philpot.

The late defensive restructuring clearly affected Millwall and directly led to Fletcher’s opening goal. Craig, where Webster would have been, was beaten in the air by Sam Winnall,

Fletcher shrugged off Edwards to advance into the box and give his side the lead in front of Barnsley’s fans with a low drive past Archer.

The Lions had prepared all week with Webster as part of the back four, and it was a mistake from Craig that almost gifted Barnsley their second goal.

the striker was through. The angle was tight, though, and Archer spread himself to save before springing to his feet to launch the inquisition.

When Barnsley did go two goals in front, the move originated down that side normally occupied by Romeo and Webster. Hammill picked up the ball deep but Edwards stood off him to allow the winger to advance towards the box. Ben Thompson was also covering but neither Millwall player got close enough to prevent Hammill shooting majestically past Archer from 25 yards.

Craig was certainly having an eventful afternoon. In the 34th minute Josh Scowen’s mis-directed header from Ferguson’s corner fell to him on his weaker right foot. He scuffed his shot but Beevers used that big frame to shield the ball from Marc Roberts before spinning to fire home his fifth goal of the season.

The defensive balance was disrupted further in the 43rd minute when Joe Martin went down off the ball with a calf problem. O’Brien came on for him with Ferguson dropping to left-back, which meant Millwall were without three-quarters of their first-choice back four.

That also probably played a part in the uncertainty when Archer came for Hourihane’s corner in the 74th minute but mis-judged it, allowing Isgrove to flick home Barnsley’s third.

Harris brought on Shaun Williams and Fred Onyedinma but utimately Millwall had given themselves too much to do with the concession of those early goals. O’Brien and Taylor, who should have scored, had late chances but it was all too desperate and so a season that built to such a thrilling climax ends in heartbreak.

Barnsley, after their stunning form this year – they were second from bottom of League One in November after eight defeats in a row – are heading back to the Championship after a two-year absence. Millwall will have to wait at least one more year for a chance to experience that feeling.

After the disappointment leaves there will be reflections on how far the club have come this season, despite not being able to take that final step.

There won’t be wholesale changes to the squad over the summer, even if likely interest in players such as Gregory could force certain moves in the transfer market.

But it’s a young squad and the likes of Jimmy Abdou, 31, and Morison, 32, still have plenty to offer.

Millwall will be favourites to achieve promotion next season and though it seems a long way away, they will approach it with optimism.

He was drafted in late when Byron Webster pulled up in the warm-up. At fault when Fletcher almost scored a second and rusty on his first start in seven months.

Scored to halve the deficit, his left boot was also used to find Steve Morison at every opportunity. One of Millwall’s better players.

He became the third player of Millwall’s first-choice back four on the sidelines when he went off injured before half-time.

Worked hard but little creativity and missed a glorious chance to pull a goal back in the 85th minute only to shoot straight at Adam Davies.

He came off second best in the midfield battle, didn’t really get forward much but never stopped running as usual.

The 20-year-old wasn’t overawed in the biggest game of his career so far, but Conor Hourihane and Josh Brownhill were on top.

He was heading straight to the airport afterwards and he’ll be looking to make a much bigger impact in France than he did at Wembley.

His quietest game all season came at the wrong time. He had a chance late on to cross but pulled the ball behind everyone.

The Millwall striker could not have done much more to try to win the game for his team. He was superb in the air but others couldn’t follow.

Harris eager for Beevers and Taylor to sign

MILLWALL ARE prioritising tying Mark Beevers down to a long-term contract and signing Chris Taylor on a permanent basis as recruitment plans begin ahead of next season.

MILLWALL BOSS Neil Harris has paid tribute to the seven players the club announced won’t be retained when their contracts expire.

Harris held talks with a number of players the day after Millwall’s play-off final defeat to Barnsley to inform them they were being released.

Those leaving the club are firstteam squad regulars Carlos Edwards and Ed Upson, as well as John Marquis, Jack Powell, Lee Martin, Chris Parr and Keaton Wood.

And Harris praised their contributions to the club.

“The players who hadn’t been involved in the play-off squad I spoke to before,” Harris explained.

“They have been out of favour but training with us and they have been ultra-professional, all of them.

“The other guys that have been in the squad, Carlos and Ed in particular, I spoke to them (Monday). We had discussions

where their futures lie. They are good guys, great pros. But they want to play regularly.

“They come to work every day but they want to be involved on Saturday at three o’clock. I’m completely respectful to their positions. They enjoy it here but want a guarantee they’ll play firstteam football.”

Harris said Edwards, who will be 38 in October, wants to continue his playing career elsewhere.

“I think in time to come Carlos has a lot of potential as a coach,” Harris said. “Having sat with Carlos on numerous occasions, he loves playing football. Coming out of the game as I did myself, you have to play as long as you can.

“We’re not in a position at the moment to offer player-coaching roles. So we had a good chat and Carlos is going to carry on playing, and rightly so. You’re a long time retired. He’s the ultimate professional.”

Meanwhile, reports suggest Millwall are favourites to sign Southend’s David Worrall.

Worrall is a 25-year-old midfielder who featured for the Shrimpers in their three clashes against Millwall this season.

Beevers is out of contract at the end of June, but boss Neil Harris is desperate to keep the Barnsley-born centre-back who emerged as a key part of the defence this season.

Twenty-six-year-old Beevers hasn’t been drawn on commenting on his future when asked this season, but Harris revealed discussions on a new deal are “ongoing”.

Meanwhile, Taylor, 29, went back to his parent club Blackburn this week after playing in Millwall’s 3-1 defeat to Barnsley in the League One play-off final last Sunday.

His contract is also set to expire and Blackburn will not be offering him a new one.

Harris hopes both players’ futures will be resolved as soon as possible.

“I’m in ongoing talks with Mark Beevers and there’s a different conversation to be had about Chris Taylor,” Harris told the News this week. “He’s Blackburn’s player at the moment and will be until the first of July.

“I’ve already spoken at length with Chris.

He has really enjoyed being here. I really enjoy working with him and he enjoys working for the club.

“He’s really come in and added quality to our squad. He’s certainly of the quality we want to attract for next season and the type of character we want.

“Talks will be key between us in the next week or so about his future. Blackburn have said they won’t be retaining his services so he’s free to talk to other clubs.”
