Bermondsey boy with ‘heart of a lion’ to lead Millwall out at final

BRAVE BERMONDSEY boy Harvey Brown will lead Millwall on to Wembley’s hallowed turf this Sunday, as they battle Barnsley for promotion to the Championsip.

A life-long fan, seven-year-old Harvey will walk with his beloved team in front of thousands after months of planning behind the scenes.

Harvey has the rare Morquio syndrome, which stunts skeletal growth, leaving sufferers with weak bones, a tendency to develop heart disease and impaired vision and hearing - and supporting Millwall has been a great love of his.

Vikki, Harvey’s mum, said she was “overwhelmed” when the news came through while they were on a bus to hospital for treatment.

Sister Cecily - a champion of youth

T

HE SUDDEN death of Sister Cecily will have shocked the thousands of local people whose lives this unorthodox and passionate nun touched.

Her colleagues at the Bosco centre and sisters at the Bermondsey convent she lived at for the past 30 years told the News just hours after her death, that she would have hated to have been described as a saint.

This was a woman brought up on the mean streets of Glasgow, who dedicated her life to caring for, inspiring and improving the lot of young people here and in other parts of the country.

She is part of an order of nuns that follow the teaching of 19th century priest John Bosco, who is popularly known as Don Bosco and was made a saint in 1934.

Working with the street children of Turin at a time of mass industrialisation and urbanisation he developed teaching methods based on love rather than punishment, a method that became known as the Salesian Preventive System.

It is the Salesian order that attracted a young Cecily to a life of vocation, which allowed her to bring her own unique bullish take on how to help those who had fallen out of the education system.

The Bosco centre in the grounds of the convent on Jamaica Road is well known in the area. Sister Cecily introduced it as a youth centre then added a nursery for young mums to leave their kids so they could train or go to work; and trained others there to work in child care. She ran a college from the centre and was known by businesses large and small for calling on them to take young people in on work experience, placements and into employment. Every local business called up by the dogged nun knew that her unwavering commitment to getting her young people on the right track meant that she would be pulling out all the stops to ensure that young person did not waste whatever opportunity she managed to get for them.

At times when the Catholic Church has been seriously out of favour, this was a woman who showed what a life of dedication and devotion was all about in the modern age. She was quick to ditch her habit when the church relaxed the dress code for nuns. A simple crucifix around her neck with little to no religious preaching, Sister Cecily saved her sermons to getting young people and businesses on the same page, showing that hard work was all that was needed to achieve in an area bristling with opportunity.

In the last few years of what was really a rather short life, Sister Cecily responded to the shortage of skilled construction workers in an area where buildings are springing up daily, by opening her own construction college.

This indomitable woman might not want to be called a saint and not everyone she helped would believe in sainthood, but she showed that you can follow a path in life in your own way and achieve whatever you want.

She followed the path of a 19th century priest in a style unlike any nun most people meet, but delivered his teachings to the letter.

Recruitment rule book butchered after youngsters unable to use a broom apply for Saturday job

A JOB advert in East Dulwich butchered low standards last week after a shop put a sign in their window asking for no “mummy’s boy” or “drunks”.

William Rose Specialist Butchers were thrust into the lime-light after their punchy advert was spotted in their window on Saturday May 14.

William Rose, the owner, told the News they had previously advertised the normal way but had no suitable candidates for a month.

He said: “It was a funny thing to do. We had some people coming in smelling of drink or looking like the great unwashed.

“I started joking about who we didn’t want and all the staff said it applied to all of them. After we put it up we had eighteen people apply and we’ve got one person now training.

“We once had one boy who had something like ten A-stars come in.

We gave him a broom and he had no idea how to use it.

“One member of staff joked that you have to twist the handle to make it work. I then walked into the room to find him struggling with it and he told me he was trying to turn it on.”

The butchers have since removed the advert but are going to hang it inside for people to see.

THE STORY of one London’s most notorious criminal figures has been depicted in a new tell-all biography that promises to go beneath the folklore of bank heists and torture.

‘Mad Frank & Sons’, by author, former Sunday Times and Daily Mail reporter, Beezy Marsh, has been described by the late Frankie Fraser’s son David as “the real truth” and “not like any other book about us”.

Spanning 100 years, the book offers first-hand accounts of the Frasers’ relationship with the Kray and Richardson families. It started off as a memoir, but Beezy felt compelled to take on searching interviews with every family member she could contact “including the women”.

“It’s very different from any of our other books. It’s very violent and very sad in parts. Some of it is hilarious with very dark humour,” said 64-year-old David, who grew up with his brother Patrick in Mason Street, Walworth.

“There’s a lot of new stuff no one has heard before, and that’s why we wanted to release this book.”

Speaking to the News about her interviews with Frankie as he struggled with alzheimer’s in a Nunhead care home before his death in 2014, Beezy said: “Frank was the one who had real power.

“He was acknowledged as the real Mr Big in gangland. But he never had to assert his power, people just knew.

He was not a plastic gangster.”

“There was a final rift between these two gangland characters,” she said.

“Eddie was thought to have made a comment at the funeral, with words to the effect of ‘I only came to see Charlie burn’.”

Never-before-heard stories from Frankie’s sister Eva also shed a light on their upbringing, and the subcultures of women’s crime gangs.

Beezy said: “Frank’s sister Eva was the one who led him into crime as a small boy. They stole to put food on the table.

“From there he goes on to burgle, and she goes onto shop lifting with a famous female gang called The 40 Thieves.

They would go through the Miss Selfridge in the West End and steal furs and expensive clothes. It really expands on that side of the crime family.

“Eva talked about her times robbing

banks, and a lot about her regrets. She was a very loyal sister, and was the one Frank confided in.

“What was surprising to me as an author is I found really great family values. They were people who had a real code of honour. They were incredibly loyal to each other.”

But Beezy and David also dispel the notorious rumours of Frankie was a torturer, who would rip out finger nails. And while the book comprehensively covers the family’s personal records and the “full extent of his violence in prison”, readers will also uncover the more tender edge of Frank’s tendencies.

“He was incredibly charitable at the end of his life. He reached a point where money didn’t matter to him. He had it, but it didn’t make him happy, so he would give cash to people that knocked on his door, and give to charity.

“David and Patrick have done nearly 30 years between them, but they grew up with crime. It was a gradual slide. It was what they knew.

“But in prison they realised crime doesn’t pay and they are very forthcoming about their regret. They are reformed characters. Their biggest pride now is having their children going to university. But the book covers 1920s Walworth and Elephant and Castle and people and places a lot of people will recognise, going all the way up to 2010. It’s gripping, it’s no holds barred, and it tells you what life was like, in prison, and out.”

Mad Frank & Sons will be released on June 2 with Sidgwick & Jackson publishers.

THE IDEA that people should pay with their Oyster Card to walk across the proposed Rotherhithe Bridge was raised at the Canada Water Forum on Monday May 23 and “went down like a lead balloon”.

Miles Price, head of projects at British Land (a potential funder of the bridge), asked at the meeting: “What do attendees think of the idea of bridge users using their Oyster Cards to get across?"

The question is said to have been met with laughter among the crowd with one member of the public replying: “Are you genuinely serious? You want people to pay to walk?”

British Land is looking to start a

ROUGH SLEEPERS and untaxed vehicles were moved away by police from the B&Q car park on Old Kent Road on Tuesday after complaints of “harassment” and “anti-social behaviour”.

Police and officers from Immigration Enforcement and Southwark Council took action on May 24 after numerous complaints about people asking passers-by for money and paid work.

A large number of the vehicles were

Resident Gary Glover, present at the meeting, said: “They flagged it up as a funding possibility. It went down like a lead balloon.

“It’s a bit farcical. The Garden Bridge would be free but us in Rotherhithe would have to pay? It’s a bit of a nonsense.”

A spokesperson from British Land confirmed that it was not a definitive suggestion of how to fund the project but rather it was intended to be a conversation starter for the room.

Councillor Barrie Hargrove, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for communities and safety, said: “This has been a serious issue for our residents and local businesses, who have lodged complaints about noise and other forms of ASB. “While the operation was successful, this is a very complex situation, which all agencies will be carefully monitoring over the coming months.”

A B&Q spokesperson said: “We are pleased to report that following our contact with MP Neil Coyle, local authorities today removed the vehicles and moved the individuals on. For all those involved, we hope this is a lasting resolution.”

Millwall fans to raise money for young Ruby

MILLWALL supporters have offered to donate all the money raised at their annual charity football match on July 9 to a disabled Bermondsey schoolgirl to help her get a computer to communicate.

Lions fans will take on Charlton Athletic supporters for the third year in a row to help a worthy cause, with this year’s recipient being tenyear-old Ruby Longman.

Ruby suffers from the rare Rett syndrome which means she hasn’t been able to walk or talk since she was a baby.

Simon Davis, an organiser of the event, said: “We do a charity football match each year and this year when we saw Ruby’s story we’d decided to do it for her.

“This will be our third year, previously we have done them for Lee Rigby and a cancer charity. It’s just a great way to bring together football supporters and have a family friendly and fun time.”

Taking place at Eltham Town Football Club, SE9 2DT, kick-off is planned for 3pm with an expected attendance of around 1,000.

Timi Samples, Ruby’s mum, said: “It is really nice that people are interested and have given so much. I’ve been asked to come visit people down The Blue so they can make a donation.

“Lilly-Rose was called into her head master’s office and she thought she was in trouble, but it turns out he just wanted to publish the story on the school website to help Ruby.”

Last week the News reported how the campaign to get Ruby a computer to help her talk had reached £2,500 out of the £10,000 needed in just a matter of days.

BERMONDSEY STREET has been immortalised in film as local businesses and residents collaborated to create a feature length movie about its history and character, to be premiered on July 10.

Julie Calvert, a resident of the street for eighteen years, started the project in August 2015, to celebrate the street’s past and the community that runs it.

Julie told the News: “The film is about Bermondsey Street but it’s also a London story. What’s relatable is that there is a street that was once not so desirable but was affordable that has become not so affordable yet desirable.

“One day I realised that I live in the most extraordinary street. It’s got a very strong sense of community. People care about where they live and work and all the businesses get along with the residents.

“It started off as a film to celebrate the street and to reminisce about how it was.

The more people I spoke to, the more I found out about it. Such as there used to be an abbey that was the largest outside of Paris.

“The street is 2000 years old. If you’re a young twenty something then you don’t know about that sort of stuff.

“Such as sometimes you can’t rely on the government for everything so, especially in recent history, the community would unite and do it themselves. There used to be loads of dockers around here and they were very close.

“The film gives a cross-section of people who have lived here for different amounts of time. It tries to give a fair view. There is a point to the film and there is some jeopardy in it, but you will have to watch it to find out.”

The film will premiere at Shortwave Cinema, Bermondsey Square, at 1pm on July 10 and tickets are selling out fast.

SOUTHWARK Council has apologised after Dickens Estate residents complained that they are still without suitable water pressure, despite earlier commitments to help.

Residents of the top floor of Wrayburn House near Jamaica Road have endured poor water pressure since Thames Water decreased it last year, a decision which is said to have affected 150 homes.

The lack of water pressure has meant residents living in tower blocks have been unable to shower properly during peak times.

After an investigation Thames Water has said the problem is now the council’s as it was established to be an “internal issue”.

Councillor Stephanie Cryan, Southwark Council cabinet member for housing, said: “We’re very sorry that some residents in the area have been experiencing these problems for so long and I understand how frustrating it must have been.

“Housing officers will be writing to affected residents soon to explain what will happen next and in the meantime I’d like to thank residents for bearing with us while we establish the causes of the problem.

“When we have to work with external parties this can sometimes take longer than we would like and I apologise again for any inconvenience caused.”

Councillor Eliza Mann, who represents the Riverside ward, criticised both Thames Water and Southwark Council for not accepting responsibility sooner.

Cllr Mann said: “The buck has been passed back and forth from the council for too long.

“The council now has to take responsibility for making sure the pressure is good enough for the higher floors of council blocks.

“We are pleased they have agreed to do this in Wrayburn House on the Dickens Estate and we are calling for the council's scrutiny committee to investigate what other blocks in the borough need this work.”

Father of three, Ezaz Mahmood, said he was lucky as he has an electric shower, but the water issues has meant his bills keep going up.

He said: “It’s been really hard.

We’ve been lucky because we use an electric shower, but in the kitchen we have a problem.

“Air comes into the system so it doesn’t work properly. They come to fix it but my bill goes up each time.

My son has to take the air from the system now. We can’t afford to always call someone out to do it. The air is due to the facts that the water cycle keeps going up and down.”

A statement from Southwark Council said they had been “working with Thames Water to investigate where the problem lies” and that a “solution can be put in place over the next few weeks”.

A MUCH-loved nun died at the Bermondsey youth centre she set up 30 years ago and to which she dedicated her life, in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Sister Cecily Dunn was diagnosed with aggressive cancer just three weeks ago, and spent her final days at the Bosco Centre in Jamaica Road – a convent with a nursery and youth club, as well as a school and college set up to help those who have experienced challenges in the mainstream education system.

Sr. Cecily, the college director, worked at the Bosco for over 30 years as part of the Salesian Sisters, a Catholic order following the principles of St Don Bosco, a 19th century priest who dedicated his life to improving the lot of disadvantaged children in Italy.

“Sr. Cecily touched a lot of lives around here, of all ages and all backgrounds,” said Romaine Shilling, who has worked at the centre for 20 years, and described the staff at the Bosco Centre as “heartbroken and devastated”.

“She always worked with deprived children,” Romaine said. “She even took in three kids for two years after their mum died. The phrase she always used was: ‘You are young, you are precious, you are loved’.” The phrase is written on the walls of the Bosco Centre nursery.

According to Sr. Norma Kirkby, another nun at the centre, Sr. Cecily grew up in a happy family – one of nine children – in Glasgow. Her Catholic father had a big influence on her thinking and eventually her decision to join the Salesian order in Scotland.

“From the minute she left home her one thought was living and working for young people,” said Sr. Norma. “She did nothing for herself – only for young people. She fought for them.”

This fight took Sr. Cecily to Liverpool in the early 1980s, combatting the city’s youth drugs problem. “She received threats one day from some criminals, saying they were going to kneecap her,” said Sr. Norma. “So overnight she had to leave – she turned up in London with just a bag of her belongings.”

for training and skills – and founded the college using money collected from donation jars she left in local pubs.

“She died here, she wanted to be surrounded by everyone,” said Romaine. “She loved this place, even though there are teenagers stomping around making noise. She loved them and she loved Bermondsey. She was inspiring, she wasn’t a saint though – she would hate to be ‘sainted’.”

Sr. Cecily was definitely not a ‘typical’ nun, according to her colleagues and friends. “When she first came to London she used to whizz around on a moped, when she still wore a habit – it was quite a sight.,” said Sr. Norma.

“They used to call her ‘The Flying Nun’!

“One time she was in the post office

on Jamaica Road when some men walked in wearing balaclavas, carrying sawn-off shotguns. They told everyone to get on the floor, but she refused so one of them pointed a gun at her chest.

She calmly pushed it away, saying ‘Excuse me”, and looked straight into the man’s eyes – and he walked right out.”

The Bosco Centre is determined to do Sr. Cecily’s memory justice. “It is business as usual here,” said Romaine.

“Sister's legacy is now our responsibility and we will carry on her Salesian ethos and way of working for the good of all young people.”

BRAVE BERMONDSEY boy Harvey Brown will lead Millwall on to Wembley’s hallowed turf this Sunday, as they battle Barnsley for promotion to the Championsip.

A life-long fan, seven-year-old Harvey will walk with his beloved team in front of thousands after months of planning behind the scenes.

Harvey has the rare Morquio syndrome, which stunts skeletal growth, leaving sufferers with weak bones, and a tendency to develop heart disease, and impaired vision and hearing - and supporting Millwall has been a great love of his.

Millwall are said to have been working long before Christmas to make this dream come true, and after Millwall drew with Bradford on Friday May 20 the deal was sealed.

Vikki, Harvey’s mum, said she was “overwhelmed” when the news came through while they were on a bus to hospital for treatment.

She said: “It came at a really nice moment as we were on our way to Great Ormond Street Hospital and Harvey was stressed about his treatment.

“Everyone was looking at me on the bus because I couldn’t stop crying.

Harvey’s been bouncing off the walls.

He was telling all the nurses “I’m going to Wembley, I’m going to Wembley!”.

“It was a challenge getting him to bed last night. I think the smile on his face will take a while to come off.

“It is hard for us as parents as there’s so much he can’t do. To actually see him with that smile on his face makes a big difference.

“He doesn’t see himself as different to anyone else and he believes he can do anything. If I can see through my tears I will enjoy the day.”

The football club has played an important part in Harvey’s life as they supported a campaign to get him and 77 other children in the UK suffering from

Morquio syndrome the vital medication Vimizim funded on the NHS. Lions boss Neil Harris said: "It was an absolute no-brainer from our point of view. The lads have really taken a shine to Harvey from the first time he came to the training ground with his fantastic smile and positive attitude. He has the real heart of a lion and we are honoured to have him as our mascot on Sunday."

The match kicks off at 3pm on Sunday May 29 with the winner getting promoted to the Championship.

THE NEWS can reveal new details and artist’s impressions of the longanticipated Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre.

The latest proposals show that the existing shopping centre looks set to be replaced by a seven-storey campus for the London College of Communication, a four-storey shopping centre, and residential towers at the site’s WalworthRoad side.

Running parallel with the overground railway bridge, there are plans for a 1,000-seat multi-screen cinema and 500capacity music venue.

The first covered retail space in Europe has stood at the heart of the Elephant since it opened in March 1965, but was sold to current owners, Delancey, in November 2013 for £80m.

The new development, designed by Allies and Morrison architects, promises a “combination of national and

independent London based shops, bars, cafes and restaurants”. The main retail and restaurant offering will be split into two four-storey buildings, joined by a first floor balcony and walkway.

Also on site will be 60,000 sq ft of workspace for the University of the Arts London’s HQ staff, plus twelve “innovation units” for start-up

businesses.

Delancey announced in July 2015 that 1,000 flats could be built at the Walworth-Road side of the “town centre” lay out. “It is envisaged the majority of the homes will be for rent and priced to match a wide-range of local earning levels for single, shared and family occupants.” The update also states “the majority” will be available to let on a long-term basis through property management firm Get Living London.

Meanwhile, the shopping centre, campus and residential towers will form the second phase of Delancey’s work in the area, following the completion of 374 flats, 272 student flats and a Sainsbury’s supermarket later this year.

A new Northern Line entrance is also planned for the site, although TfL have yet to confirm a time for its construction.

The News reported in April that the new site is also effectively co-owned by the Qatari government, via its investment company, Qatari Diar Real Estate, and a Dutch pension fund asset manager APG. These latest proposals are being showcased from today until Saturday on the first floor of the Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre, within the corner shop next to the railway station entrance.

The exhibition will be open today from 2pm to 8pm, Friday from 9am to 5pm, and Saturday from 10am to 4pm.

Delancey’s founder and CEO, Jamie Ritblat, said: “Over the last three years we have been in ongoing discussions with key local stakeholders, the public and our partners at UAL in order to ensure we put culture, art, education and – most importantly – the needs of the local community, at the heart of our plans. ‘Entrepeneur spirit’ opens new nursery

WALWORTH: A nursery is set to open at the beginning of June, which the headteachers of Surrey Square Primary School credits to “a bit of entrepreneurial spirit”.

The new shared early-years space, joined to the primary school on Surrey Square Park, has sixteen places for two-year-olds, and 52 places for children aged three.

Co-head teacher, Liz Robinson, said: “We got it using a bit of entrepreneurial spirit. We sold a bit of our land at the back of the school with outline planning permission to a developer. And then when they got full permission to build the flats we got them to also agree to building out nursery. So we’re absolutely delighted we have made this happen at a time when public spending is so tight. The intention is to help out mums who need childcare so they can work, and we want to create a really beautiful first-school experience for children.”

The new term starts on the week starting Monday, June 6, and Liz says they still have vacancies for places.

Man suffers knife injuries after fight

CAMBERWELL: A man in his twenties has been bailed following a knife fight in Camberwell on Monday.

The fight broke out in Camberwell Road at about 5.30 by the junction with Bowyer Place.

A resident told the News she saw another man in his twenties “totting away” after residents watched the incident from their balconies.

“Police were looking in bushes and asking neighbours what they saw,” she said. The Met confirmed both men were in their twenties. The wounded man’s injuries were not life threatening.

MP steps in to help residents in 6 year old flats set for demolition

RESIDENTS OF the 85 Peckham flats, to be demolished or renovated six years after they were built, are being backed by MP Harriet Harman as they negotiate with Wandle Housing Association.

The News reported on May 12 that subsidence and persistent flooding had been discovered in the four blocks in Solomon’s Passage, meaning two of the buildings will have to be demolished and rebuilt.

The MP for Camberwell and Peckham met on Friday with a dozen tenants and leaseholders, and joined them on Monday in Parliament when residents met with Wandle’s chief executive Tracey Lees to discuss their needs.

Residents were given the “shocking” news on April 25, following inspections by independent fire experts Building Research Establishment and construction company Keegans Ltd. Following Keegan’s advice, Wandle announced plans to to demolish blocks 42 and 44 after blocks 40 and 46 are refurbished.

Several residents told the News they reported problems related to the basement car park flooding in 2011, as well as problems with mold, damp and cockroaches.

The News has also learnt that some of the affected families in Solomon’s Passage came to the site after being moved from the Heygate Estate. Other tenants living in the blocks were people who had to be evacuated from the 2009 Craisbrooke Gardens fire, which destroyed more than 50 flats.

Now residents face an ongoing battle to secure compensation, while Wandle continues to demand full rent and service charges. The association confirmed residents have so far been offered a “disturbance allowance” of up to £3,000

for moving costs, while those who have to permanently move will be entitled to a £5,300 “home-loss payment”.

One resident, who asked to remain anonymous, told the News that Monday’s meeting was “mostly positive” and that the association’s CEO had been “receptive” and “responded well” to residents’ ideas.

The resident said: “The ball is in Wandle’s court now. We have given them 20 working days to respond to their demands before negotiations continue.”

But ahead of Monday’s meeting, Sam Thompson, 32, a shared-owner in Block 40 with a nine-month-old son old, said: “Because of the history with Wandle I don’t have any trust in them. I’m not

convinced we will get any results but I would like to hope that we do. I don’t want to move out of my flat, but I know we will have to. I’m not prepared to move out of Southwark, I want to stay in the area. It means I’ve got to find a nursery and work out how I’ll travel to work. I have my family and friends and this whole community here.”

Speaking after the meeting on Friday, Ms Harman told the News: “I am shocked at what has happened here. The situation that people living here have lost their peace of mind and now their homes is heart breaking.”

The MP also offered to help the residents with ongoing negotiations. She recommended that Wandle should allow

a resident to join the association’s board; to set up a tenants and residents association; and to ask Wandle to pay for an independent mediator throughout their discussions.

Tracey Lees, Chief Executive of Wandle, said: “It was very valuable to meet Solomon’s Passage residents on Monday and hearing their feedback in person has helped us acknowledge their concerns. We remain committed to working with them to find long-term solutions at Solomon’s Passage.”

Last week the News reported that the four blocks of flats were built by Green Acre Homes (South East) Ltd, who were dissolved as recently as May 3, and put into administration in 2011.

Proposals could see school surrounded by blocks of flats EXCLUSIVE

PROPOSALS FOR 78 new flats could leave a Peckham primary school surrounded by apartment blocks.

Southwark Council floated draft plans for four blocks of flats on the north and south sides of the Angel Oak Academy’s grounds in July 2015.

A second round of consultations in January suggested relocating the nearby Wickway Community Centre from George’s Way, to the school, and building a new school entrance on Chandler Way. Further consultations were scheduled for March, but were postponed with no new

date in mind. Now residents say they feel “frustrated” by a lack of consultation.

Kerry Browne, of the Gloucester Grove Estate and who uses the Wickway, said: “The council said in a meeting in January it wanted to relocate the community centre to the school. But I bumped into school teachers who didn’t realise it was going to affect the school, and had only come expecting to hear about the community centre. They said in January the only thing they had heard about the school was it would be ‘refurbished’.

“These plans are going to affect our children and our families. We are just a concerned community. People also want to be consulted together. Not as just the school or just the Wickway, but at the same time.”

Brown Architects are available on the council’s website by a search with the phrase “Angel Oak Academy Primary School SE15”. The council denied the News permission to print these images, arguing the draft proposals maybe misconstrued as definitive plans, despite them still being in the public domain.

Cllr Mark Williams, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, said: “This is a complex scheme but has the potential to provide much needed new council homes, as well as affordable homes for key workers like nurses and teachers, a new community centre and improved facilities for Angel Oak School. Nothing is set in stone and we are keen to hear from all parties throughout the consultation process.”

The head teacher of Angel Oak Academy was approached for comment.

Residents on Chandler Way had mixed views. Sydney Hutchinson, 51, said: “People have got to have homes. I’ve got a friend whose family of four living in a one-bedroom council flat and has been on the waiting list for years.”

Lucy Cope, 60, said: “We won’t stand for it. Parking is already a nightmare. The council won’t let us have our own spaces even though I have a disabled badge. All the dust and noise from the construction work will be horrendous for the kids.”

Sandra Hinds, 57, said: “The thought of more traffic worries me. I’m disabled and use sticks or my wheelchair.

“There have been times when I’ve had to cancel taxis to my house because they can’t park near my flat.”

THE ELEPHANT and Castle’s Guerrilla Gardener has slammed TfL for breaking promises to plant 60 trees at ‘The Bend’s’ new piazza.

E&C residents were told by TfL during public consultations that an ‘Elephant Orchard’ of 60 fruit trees would be dotted around the pedestrian peninsula, and by the junctions with Newington Causeway and St George’s Road.

Richard Reynolds, who leads community gardening projects under the Guerrilla Gardener moniker, believes residents of the “grim” new junction have been misled.

“It’s amazing what [TfL] promised, 60 trees, and they went into loads of detail,” the 38 year old said.

“You can still see on the TfL website it says there will be apple, quince and plum trees, and instead you can see they have felled two London Plane trees and Lime Trees.

“There are now ten, not 60, and half of them aren’t rooted, they are in wooden boxes, so you can imagine they will only be temporary.

“The consultation also promised raised beds of lavender, thyme and rosemary in the central piazza.

Instead you can see they have just put loads of turf down. Most of the plants they have put down aren’t plants that aren’t in flower through most of the year, and will be invisible.

“I can’t imagine they would want

to dig up all this expensive turf they have just put down to plant the extra trees.”

A ‘Consultations’ section of the TfL website, last updated in March 2015, shows pictures of the original plans, reads: “Elephant Square could have up to 100 new trees and shrubs, and over 1000 square metres of new soft planting including new green roofs on pavilion structures.

“We’re interested in finding species which are particular and peculiar to the Elephant, in combinations that you wouldn’t find anywhere else but the Elephant.”

Richard, who is also chair of the Perronet House Tenants and Residents’ Association, said: “This was all part of their public consultation, and absolutely no one objected to these ideas, so why have they changed their minds?

So many local politicians know air pollution is a terrible problem in London, and particularly in Elephant and Castle. Something like planting trees would actually really help.”

The News contacted TfL for a comment, but did not receive a response by the time of going to press.

Council to ‘ramp up security’ at new Fisher ground after youths play for hours on pitch ROTHERHITHE

THE COUNCIL is ‘ramping up’ security at Fisher FC’s new ground in Rotherhithe after dozens of youths walked through open security gates and played on the pitch for hours on Sunday.

The brand new 3G pitch on Salter Road saw up to 50 people causally walk in and out of the security gate and play football, on May 22.Outraged members of Fisher, who have been fighting to return to Rotherhithe for years only to possibly be tenants at their new ground, criticised Southwark Council’s failure to protect it until an owner is established.

Dean Harrison, first team manager at Fisher FC, said: “It is really poor from the council. It should be our ground and it’s being used wrongly because they can’t make a decision. It’s been an absolute joke that we haven’t been able to get in the ground, get our club sorted out and be the club we want to be.”

sharing in Dulwich with Dulwich Hamlet FC may prove controversial as there will be an “open-tender process” for the ground’s lease. Failure to secure the lease for the club may result in them being tenants in their own stadium, putting into question future sustainability.

Cllr Maisie Anderson, Cabinet Member for Public Health, Parks and Leisure, said: “It is very disappointing that there has been

a break-in at the new football ground and we have since reviewed and are ramping up security on the site. The new ground will be a huge asset to the local community and Fisher FC - alongside the new public park and new council homes over the road.

We are in the process of securing management for the new sports ground through a competitive process, and we hope to have this in place this summer.”

Police launch appeal after tube assault

BRITISH Transport Police have released an image of a man they want to speak to about an assault at Canada Water station on Monday April 4

At 10:30pm a 31-year-old man was assaulted in the station as he and his friend were leaving.

Two men are said to have been behind them singing Millwall songs before one of them punched the victim in the face.

Another man, who is yet to be identified by police, was also attacked.

Detective Sergeant Krishan Appannah said: “Fortunately neither victim was seriously injured, but they sustained cuts and bruises in a frightening outburst of violence.

Dad walks 50km in a day to raise cash for hospice that cared for son

A FATHER from Bermondsey has walked 50km to raise over £1,200 for the hospice that cared for his late six-year-old son, who died on January 9.

Little Archie Marshall was unable to see or move, and suffered from epilepsy before he died. He had suffered for his entire life from Deletion 14 Q12, a rare syndrome caused by a missing chromosome which stunts growth and restricts mobility and vision.

On Saturday his dad Dean, 31, took part in the charity walk, organised by the Demelza Hospice Care for Children.

After the marathon walk, Dean told the News: “I’m in a lot of pain but it was definitely worth it – 100 times over.

“I just imagined Archie was walking and holding my hand with me, and if I needed cry I would look up at the sky.

“I want to do it every year if I can.

We just can’t thank Demelza enough for the care they gave us and to Archie.”

Dean was joined by his brother-inlaw Jason Cartwright and more than 70 other walkers on the trek between the hospice’s two centres in Sittingbourne and Eltham.

His partner, Aine Green, 41, said: “I’m unbelievably proud of Dean for doing 35 miles in one day. It’s nice to give something back because the hospice helped so much.

“They’re an independent charity, and they go on donations alone. We want to make sure that any other family who goes what we had to go through would be able to get the same level of respite care as we did.”

The couple now live in Ladywell,

Lewisham, with Archie’s brother and two sisters: Alex, Annie and Neve.

Before the tragic loss of Archie, who Aine said was “always smiling and laughing”, the family lived in Bermondsey. Towards the end of Archie’s life they were moved into specially-adapted accommodation in Nunhead. “Since Archie died we have had to move around a lot,” Aine said.

“But we’re still Bermondsey. All our family are there and Dean still works close to Surrey Quays.”

SOUTHWARK GREATS APPEAR IN NEW ELEPHANT MOSAIC

AN UP-AND-COMING artist has painted a stunning mural of Southwark’s finest contributors to the world of film, music and science - and popular former mayor Dora Dixon-Fyle.

Ibiye Camp, 24, unveiled the giant mural last week at The Artworks shipping-container Business Park at the Elephant and Castle, by the junction with Walworth Road.

The artist, who lives off East Street, said: “I wanted to give local people something to talk about on their way to work. It’s more about familiar faces from south London than choosing famous people.

“I also wanted it to remind people of the mosaics that were on the underpasses at Elephant and Castle.”

Perhaps surprisingly, there is also an appearance in the mural by outgoing mayor of Southwark, Dora Dixon-Fyle.

Five-year-old falls from window

A FIVE-year-old girl who was rushed to hospital on Saturday after falling from a second-floor window in Camberwell remains in a stable condition, police have said.

Met Police and joint-response paramedics were called to Paulet Road, where the girl was found with serious injuries.

A spokesman for the Met told the News at the time: “Police were called to Paulet Road, Camberwell, at approximately

19:50hrs on Saturday, 21 May, to reports of a child fallen from a building. The fiveyear-old girl was taken to a south London hospital by London Ambulance Service.”

A spokeswoman added: “There do not appear to be any suspicious circumstances.”

Teacher’s book on famous Georgian boxer up for award CAMBERWELL

A CAMBERWELL school teacher’s debut novel was recently shortlisted for a prestigious sports writing prize and could be made into a film.

The book, Richmond Unchained, by former sports journalist Luke Williams, 39, is nominated for best biography at the Cross Sports Book awards.

It tells the story of former slave Bill Richmond who travelled to England at the turn of the 18th Century and became a boxing celebrity in Georgian Britain.

Mr William’s work is up against biographies of Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, footballer Cristiano Ronaldo and boxer Emile Griffiths, written by Donald McRae, one of his literary heroes.

He said: “It came as a bit of a surprise, it’s really gratifying.

“I’ve lived with it for twelve years and it’s been a very long road, but I’m very passionate about getting his history to more people.

“He [Bill Richmond] is an unsung hero in history.”

The book traces Richmond’s journey

from Staten Island to his boxing career, detailing his education at the bequest of English lieutenant general Hugh Percy. Richmond fought and won well into his 50s and was also on hand at the coronation of George the Fourth in 1821.

The Sacred Heart Catholic school teacher’s story has attracted the attention of a British film producer, who has optioned the rights for the adaptation of the work.

The book’s title is a deliberate nod to 2013 film Django Unchained and continues the renewed interest in the hidden history of Britain and of diversity in film-making.

He said: “I’m confident we’ll see him [Richmond] on the big screen.”

The awards ceremony takes place at Lord’s Cricket Ground on June 1, with Mr Williams suggesting his outsider status is like that of fictional movie boxer Rocky Balboa.

Teen who planned a Lee Rigby-style beheading has sentence slashed By court reporter

A MUSLIM convert from Camberwell who was jailed for 22 years for plotting a Lee Rigby-style beheading had his sentence slashed by three years because of his “youth” on May 17.

Brustholm Ziamani, 20, was said to be “within hours” of carrying out his murder plan with a hammer and a 12 inch knife when he was arrested in east London on August 19 2014.

After his arrest Ziamani told a prison officer at HMP Wandsworth he intended to pose with the soldier's decapitated head - his “trophy” - in one hand and an Islamic flag in the other.

When police searched Ziamani's house during an unrelated investigation in June 2014, they found handwritten notes vowing that “British soldiers' heads will be removed”.

Another note stated: “We should do a 9/11 and a 7/7 and Woolwich all in one day every day for eight years.”

Judge Timothy Pontius jailed Ziamani for 22 years with an extended licence period of five years at the Old Bailey last March after he was convicted of preparing an act of terrorism.

But The Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales, Sir John Thomas, reduced his custodial sentence to 19 years as the Court of Appeal issued guidance on sentencing under section five of The Terrorism Act. Referring to Ziamani's sentence, he said: “This offending was towards the very top end of the scale for offences under section five [of the Terrorism Act] but, given his youth, we consider that the custodial part of the sentence, namely 22 years, was too long.”

During his trial at the Old Bailey he claimed he never intended to carry out a terror attack and was only joking when he boasted about it to his ex-girlfriend.

Ziamani was convicted of engaging in conduct in preparation of terrorist acts on or before August 20 contrary to section 5 (1) of the Terrorism Act 2006.

POLICE ARE continuing to appeal for information after they released CCTV footage of three men they want to speak to in connection to one of two Co-Op burglaries on Spa Road, Bermondsey.

SUSPECT TWO (ref: 43485) is described as a slim built, clean shaven white man, aged in his 20s. He was wearing a dark blue hooded zip top, dark trousers, trainers and white gloves.

SUSPECT THREE (ref: 43486) is described as a slim built black man, aged in his 20s. He was wearing a dark brown cap, blue jumper, black trousers and black gloves.

The first burglary was reported to have occurred at some point between 44:45am on Monday May 9 where tobacco and lotto scratchcards were stolen.

CCTV at the rear of the shop caught the moment the three men smashed the lower half of the glass front door and ran onto the shop floor.

They went behind the counter and put tobacco, cigarettes and scratchcards into a bag before leaving. Police are keen to hear from anyone who may recognise the men shown on CCTV. A statement from Co-Op confirmed that the store was again burgled on Wednesday, May 11, but it is yet unknown if it was the same people.

A spokesperson for the Co-op said: “I can confirm that the store was burgled twice last week, in the early hours of Monday and Wednesday morning. The police are investigating, and, as with any incident such as this, we would appeal for anyone with any information to come forward.”

Sister Cecily made her journey home to God after a short but very brave battle.

She died on the special feast day of ‘Mary, Help of Christians’.

We will miss her enthusiasm and her inspiring leadership.

For the last 30 years she has shown her love and commitment to the people of Bermondsey, but especially to all the young people who she loved above all else.

Her life was devoted to the welfare of young people and we all thank God for the gifts she brought to this world. We love her and will miss her immeasurably.

I

T’S BEEN great to see new Mayor, Sadiq Khan, get to grips with some of the issues local people have raised with me since I was elected last May.

He’s been in a few weeks and is off to a flying start.

Sadiq is looking to bring forward the Ultra-Low Emissions Zone to help tackle illegal air pollution levels in London which the former Mayor ignored. Air pollution at the Elephant and Castle is the worst in south London and people living near and using the Rotherhithe Tunnel and Jamaica Road also suffer badly. Sadiq is literally a breath of fresh air!

He also backs a new pedestrian and cyclist bridge from Rotherhithe to Canary Wharf. I met with Sustrans on their viability study and am happy to help progress the plans. I’m glad to be working with the Labour Mayor, councillors and other supporters in SE16 of this much needed bridge and look forward to seeing it span the Thames.

Local commuters stand to benefit from Sadiq’s early delivery of night tubes from August. Many could save hundreds of pounds under the new ‘hopper’ bus fare from September; a ticket for a whole hour even if more than one bus is used. It’s great to see the new Mayor’s energy delivering for our community.

Speaking of energy, it’s been great to welcome local schools to Parliament including English Martyrs, Octavia House, Tower Bridge Road Primary and Southwark Park Primary. Local children always bring bundles of energy and questions and deserve the best opportunities living at the heart of London.

Their future opportunities are at stake in the EU referendum. I’ll be campaigning for us to remain in. Our economy, employment levels, environment and security all benefit from membership. It’s also vital we remain in the EU to keep the UK united; a vote to leave could cause Scotland to leave the UK. Patriots must fight for the UK as well as the EU and vote to stay in.

It’s been a year since the general election. I’ve been in contact with over 16,000 local people. It’s great to help where possible and I enjoy my meetings across the constituency. Help find Dad - the Milk Tray stuntman

I AM hoping that you can help me.

I am searching for my father, John/Johnny Carr who I believe moved to the Peckham / South London area a couple of years ago.

I have heard that he is in ill health and may not even be alive but I am getting married next year and I would like to know once and for all these years if we look alike, and where I come from.

John was born Royston C. Caddy in 1952, in Redruth, Devonshire. He had lots of brothers and sisters but I am in touch with recently a sister called Linda Goodall, who is now known as 'Chrissie'. He grew up in Crawley, and married a Lucy Coffey in 1980s and had a child, Victoria Carr in 1982. He later met my mother and lived in Hull with her and they had me in 1989.

He is believed to be quite a well known stunt man, he did the stunts in one of the Milk Tray adverts, did stunts in Herbie Rides Again and did the Swindon Bridge Stunt in 1996. He worked with a Mark Stannage another stuntman, and they were the 'Phoenix Fire Blowers' and toured all over the country.

The only other information I have is that he moved to Goole and then to Peckham which I believe is where he is now / where he passed away and I am search desperately for closure and hope you or your readers can help.

Then, disaster would have resulted from not allowing Homebase to build a DIY store on the pitch and move the stadium to Green Dale. Fast forward 17 years and the alarms concern a developer, wants to build 155 posh flats and ....you’ve guessed it .... moving the pitch to Green Dale.

Southwark Planning and a government inspector rejected the plan then. Now, the local community demands that precedent being repeated to save this much-loved green open space, enjoyed by people, rare species and wildlife alike.

It remains protected Metropolitan Open Land, at a time when open spaces are fast disappearing in London. Once lost, it can never be replaced. .

As a long-term Hamlet seasonticket holder, and former chair of its Supporters' Trust, I believe we should be developing Plan B for taking Gavin Rose’s exciting and entertaining team to higher levels at a much-improved Champion Hill stadium.

We need a wholly different form of ownership. Certainly, not just waiting for yet another White Knight with dark dreams of huge profits.

Was Boris sitting on Nitrogen Dioxide study?

KNOWING CHILDREN risk reduced lung capacities and asthma from exposure to vehicular pollution, it’s staggering that for two and a half years Boris Johnson sat on study showing almost a quarter of London’s primary schools are in areas exposed to illegal levels of Nitrogen Dioxide.

If this was a deliberate cover up, the former Mayor of London failed in his public health

responsibilities and showed negligence. Having found this report, the new Mayor Sadiq Khan should take note that some of these schools are in outer London boroughs and beyond his proposed Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ).

It’s essential these boroughs have the ability to opt in to the ULEZ right from the outset.

To give just one example - being part of the Single Market supports London’s status as an international economic hub. 40 per cent of the world’s largest 250 companies have chosen London for their European or global headquarters, with almost half citing access to Europe as the core reason for investing in London.

The EU also brings many other benefits, ranging from action to tackle air pollution through to delivering low mobile phone bills.

More GP and nurse appointments available in Southwark

OUTHWARK RESIDENTS have been telling us for some time that they sometimes find it difficult to get an appointment with the GP or practice nurse.

NHS Southwark Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), the organisation in charge of planning and buying local health services, have used this feedback to develop the Extended Primary Care Service. And it is proving popular with patients.

More GP and nurse appointments are now available for Southwark residents in the daytime, evening and at weekends through the extended service. The CCG has invested £2 million per year in the service to make it easier for people to see or speak to a doctor or nurse at a time that suits them.

The service provides pre-booked appointments from 8am – 8pm, 7 days a week, including bank holidays. Local GP practices are working together to deliver the extended service from two sites in Bermondsey and Peckham. Initially the service is focusing providing care for people with same day or next day health needs, but will be delivering broader primary care services over the coming months.

To get an appointment at the service, call your GP practice in the usual way or when your practice is closed, contact the GP out of hours service (SELDOC) on 020 8693 9066. Patients with more complex needs that are better managed by their own GP would be seen in their own practice.

Every month over 4,000 extra appointments are offered to people with urgent health needs at the Extended Primary Care Service.

Over 95% of patients who have used the service would recommend it to friends and family.

Our two-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Maggie, began cheering Peppa’s name and singing the theme song as soon as she saw the merchandise on sale outside.

By the time our friendly hosts led us to our seats, Maggie was bursting with excitement, believing she was actually at Peppa Pig’s house.

Peppa Pig’s Surprise started with the lead actor of the show spraying the audience with water, which the kids loved.

The story follows Peppa as she plays outside with her friends, Suzy Sheep, Danny Dog, Rebecca Rabbit, Pedro Pony (surely everybody’s favourite?), and even Mr Potato, when Mummy Pig and Daddy Pig present the eponymous star and her little brother George with a surprise. Don’t worry, there won’t be any plot spoilers here!

Let’s just say it involves an adventure in their red car beyond the Pig household.

The very realistic costumes had Maggie mesmerised – the characters looked like they’d jumped out of the small screen.

The show has great audience participation, a superb storyline and fantastic songs, which had the little ones singing and dancing

The comic, who has now been around a very long time, starts the show with a screen presentation about how he is castigated by Twitter trolls, gauging our laughter with how many Retweets and Favourites his own Tweets received, and this opening section then segued nicely into discussing his amazing mother – her life and her death.

Mainly, the first half was about his mother’s ‘torrid’ affair with a golfer that she never bothered to hide, even telling any of the three sons’ new girlfriends about the ‘love of her life’. It was an affair that lasted almost all her adulthood and which was stoically ignored by David’s father.

Baddiel leaves nothing out: every grunt and yelp of his parents’ love-making; his mum’s dire erotic poetry (found after her demise); her squeals of masturbatory delight, all the skeletons dragged from cupboards to dance before us on the Menier stage. He doesn’t let himself off the hook either, calling himself the lovechild of Jenny Murray and Alan Yentob.

The Menier was filled with a laughter that mirrors the uneasiness of the subject matter but knows where it is coming from.

My Family is bold and it is brave, and it won’t be to everyone’s liking, but as fearless as this production is, it is done with much love, the love of a son who perhaps loves his parents even more now that he knows them more intimately than a son needs to know his parents.

Proper tea market flourishing

Enough with the low-grade blended ‘Breakfast’ tea, stop it with the ‘All day’ cuppa, and let’s get down to checking out the multitude of other teas that are picked, carefully brought down from sundrenched mountains and then shipped across oceans on Cutty Sark-type clippers. Or that is the romantic version, but that is not so far from the truth.

Basically, Ms Holmes wants to offer quality and variety to all the tea lovers.

Emilie’s Good & Proper Tea Company was established from crowdfunding in 2012 when she started out in a converted 1974 Citroen van and became a regular at her local Brockley Market. She has subsequently expanded from those gamechanging beginnings.

The Good & Proper Tea team have spent the last few years tasting teas from farms all over the world, always looking for a distinctive character that stands up on its own, without the need for blending or flavouring. Over that time they have formed their extensive collection of black, oolong, green and white teas, as well as, for the first time, herbs. Each has been numbered according to the order in which they were discovered, tasted and then added to the collection.

And so it was that myself and Phil the

Singer (no relation to Pearl the Singer, long-lost or otherwise) were in the Hatton Garden area supping on some fine brewed leaf, accompanied perfectly with pimped up crumpets and cake. A brunch so British I almost sang the national anthem between sips!

For convenience to help the uninitiated, the tealeaves are arranged in sample jars at the front of the counter so that you can smell each variety to see which one takes your fancy. An Assam man myself, I fancied trying something different, something to broaden my own, quite narrow tea knowledge, so chose the No. 13 Honey Orchid Oolong because its aroma stood out from the others. This is a Chinese tea that spends a lot of time in the sun; its name coming from its sweet finish. It was very nice and went quite well with the Ham, Cheese, Mustard and Egg Sourdough Crumpet I ordered. I’ve never come across these crumpets before but will be seeking them out in future.

Phil, with an obvious sweet tooth, had the Pecan & Maple Butter topped with Banana that looked absolutely delicious, though a touch too rich for me at that time of the day, but no problem for this young man who paired it with No. 4 Hojicha from the Green Tea selection.

Emilie had enlisted the support of young, innovative Peckham-based architecture design studio, Kennedy Woods (www.kennedywoods.co.uk) to develop a striking fit-out, design and graphics for her new launches around town, which meant Phil and I sat and discussed our way around current topics in extremely pleasant surroundings. The Referendum, the EU, Corbyn, Cameron and the Elephant & Castle all got a mention as we supped away.

When our pots ran dry we checked out another leaf each. This time I went for the No, 18 Four Seasons, another Oolong with more fruitier notes than my first choice. This was partnered with a Fresh Orange & Honey Madeleine, an airy, spongey little cake that we shared along with Phil’s Chocolate Brownie (gluten free) that he had with the No. 11 White Peony, which, after having a little taste, decided was my favourite.

The Good & Proper Tea Company should become as well known and as well used as the coffee shops that are everywhere. These days there are coffee shops opening up next to other coffee shops, more or less, so a backlash had to come. ‘I’m a tea drinker’ begins Emilie, ‘but I couldn’t understand why tea had

missed a trick, so I wanted to give the good old cup of tea a bit of love and make it a Good and Proper one…finally!”

AMID ALL the excitement and nervous tension this Sunday, there will be one man as close to a picture of relaxation as you can get before a major final.

Steve Morison has played at Wembley four times and if Millwall fans are looking for omens he’s won the three club cup finals he’s played there.

In his first spell as a Millwall player Morison’s demeanour, which rarely changes from a kind of sulky menace, sometimes left fans with mixed impressions about his affection for the club.

When he left after two seasons to join Norwich City in the Premier League few thought they would see him again.

But he did come back, and that image of him was perhaps enforced as he rarely smiled during an eight-goal, 42game loan spell as Millwall just avoided dropping out of the Championship in 2013-14.

Morison wondered why he would smile with things going poorly but even aside from the fact he was on the phone to Neil Harris begging to return for a third time last summer, his ferocious work rate on the pitch leaves few fans now doubting his commitment. He’s still not that emotionally expressive on the pitch, apart from when he unleashes the odd explosive goal celebration or gets involved in spats with opposition fans.

But Morison approached this week, the biggest for Millwall in six years, with the same even temperament and finds it straightforward to focus only on the 90 minutes against Barnsley.

“I’m feeling relaxed,” Morison said.

“We’ll make sure we do the work we need to do, look after ourselves and don’t pick up any stupid injuries.

“We’ll get our mindsets right and do what we do every other week. We start working the last two days before the game on the opposition, their strengths and weaknesses. It’s the two most inform teams at the minute, both playing 4-4-2, and it’ll be a good game.”

Asked if leading the side out at Wembley has been on his mind, Morison said: “I haven’t thought about it. I’m not a very emotional guy. I am what I am, I won’t get too high or too low.

“If you ask anyone who knows me they’ll say the same thing. When I got home Friday night (After the draw with Bradford) you wouldn’t have even known we’d won a tie, I just got home and went to bed.

“I’ll just go there on Sunday and treat it as another game of football.

Obviously I’ll do everything in my power to help us win a game of football. That’s what my focus is.

“It’s going to be a great day but it’s only really great if you win.”

There was one imposition on the usual schedule this week. On Tuesday evening Morison, along with club captain Tony Craig and Jimmy Abdou, were guests at the Attlee Room in the House of Lords to celebrate the work of the Millwall Community Trust.

But otherwise Harris is preparing the squad for the final as they would any away game, staying in a hotel – “You don’t want people driving to Wembley on the day of the game and getting

stuck in traffic,” Morison jokes – and keeping to same routine.

Morison is confident of making it a fourth successive club win at Wembley and, though he doesn’t recall much in the week leading up to the 2010 League One play-off final, he does remember never feeling like Kenny Jackett’s side were going to lose to Swindon.

“Kenny was always calm,” Morison said. “His messages were always the same, a bit like the manager is now. He always told us to go and enjoy

ourselves and express ourselves. That’s what we’ve been doing this season and I think if we keep putting in performances like we have recently we’ll be alright.”

Morison isn’t laid back as to be almost horizontal, he does admit to some apprehension at the uncertainty at how the game might unfold and ultimately not getting the right result.

“If you don’t get nervous there’s something wrong,” Morison admitted.

“There’s the anxiety of not wanting to lose but I do keep myself on an even

keel all the time. If I score I’m not on top of the world and if I don’t score it’s not the end of the world.

“That’s just something I’ve learned over time, it’s how I get the best out of myself.

“I’ve been quite lucky as a player, I’ve been to Wembley four times in my career, I’ve played an international game there in front of 80,000 people.

“It’s not something I’m overly worried about but obviously it’s the last one of the season and ultimately the most important one.”

Morison’s Wembley history good omen for Lions

FA Trophy final, May , 2007 Kidderminster 2-3 Stevenage

The then 23-year-old striker played with Stevenage Borough in the final of the FA Trophy in front of 55,262 fans at the new Wembley.

Stevenage fell two goals behind to Kidderminster, but they fought back and Morison scored the winner in the 88th minute.

Two years later he was back in the final of the same competition, this time against York.

And again he was on the scoresheet, scoring the opener in a 2-0 win in front of an attendance of 27,102.

Morison lifted the trophy as captain of the side.

Millwall are back at Wembley this season exactly six years to the day since their last final appearance.

Morison started up front alongside current boss Neil Harris and current team-mates David Forde, Tony Craig and Jimmy Abdou.

the season: there was serious work to be done and it wouldn’t be undertaken in a neat pinstripe.

He quickly filled a glass with water and took a sip, before he looked up and said: “Fire away”.

It wasn’t quite an inquest – there were only a couple of local journalists there and a handful of regional reporters present.

But Harris angrily – and, it seemed at the time for a novice manager at the level, riskily - criticised his players. It was a “shambles” and it “hurt” he said, before adding: “I think it's clear to me that some of the players are struggling to play here at the moment and until there's some results on the board I certainly have to reflect that in my team selection.”

Harris would discard the suit after a 2-0 defeat to Southend on September 19 – the fifth in the first six home games of the season – settling instead for a club tracksuit.

Whether that was a conscious decision or not, it seemed appropriately symbolic, a threshold in

He had a busy media schedule. It had been a very different atmosphere to that Coventry game, with with the Lions manager now speaking of his “pride” and “privilege” at leading the side this season.

Few would have predicted that would have been the case after the miserable start. Then the questions were regarding his suitability for such a big job.

Maybe Millwall should have gone with someone more experienced with Harris assisting? Fans worried about the transfer strategy and placing so much trust in inexperienced young players at a club where the fans are more unforgiving than most.

So, then, what happened in between those two press conferences and two contrasting images of the manager?

AFTER COVENTRY hammered Millwall at The Den in August, boss Neil Harris appeared in the press room upstairs afterwards appearing slightly dishevelled, apart from the navy suit he was wearing.

RECRUITMENT

Harris uses the word ‘diligent’ a lot: diligent about preparation, diligent about the teams they face (the chief opposition scout watched Wigan eight times this season, and similar scouting will have been done to assess Barnsley – Harris was at the first leg of their semi-final against Walsall).

Millwall also conduct precise background checks before signing players – even if some fans wondered at the direction of the club after the then Southwark News reporter was appointed to the recruitment team last summer.

Another word Harris likes is ‘trust’.

Jordan Archer, Steve Morison, Joe Martin and Tony Craig have been dependable buys, but loan recruits have given impetus at important stages of the season.

Harris used his relationship with someone he trusts implicitly to bring in two of them. George Saville arrived from Wolves with high recommendations from Kenny Jackett and Millwall went unbeaten in the midfielder’s first nine games.

When Fred Onyedinma and Aiden O’Brien suffered mid-season dips, Harris again turned to Jackett and signed Jed Wallace. The winger made his debut in the 2-1 win at Oldham in

January and quickly won over fans with his pace, quality delivery and relentlessly positive play. Millwall won eight of the fourteen games in which he was involved and such was his importance to the team there was a genuine fear the season would unravel when he was recalled early

by Jackett.

Even before he knew Wallace would be leaving, Harris had already lined up someone he again was familiar with and trusted would fit in. Chris Taylor arrived from Blackburn and scored two minutes into his debut, the winner against Sheffield United.

Taylor was a completely different option to Wallace, a wide midfielder with less creativity but one who fulfils one of the fundamental traits Harris wants in his players: Taylor never, ever shirks a challenge.

THE TACTICS

In this sense there has been no real revolution, with 4-4-2 the preferred formation for the majority of the season.

Harris spoke a lot about creating different units in the team and that manifests on the pitch. The front two of Morison and Lee Gregory have combined so devastatingly this season; the central block of Byron Webster, Mark Beevers, Jimmy

Abdou and Ben Thompson has been unmoveable, with Bradford boss Phil Parkinson admitting his team couldn’t find a way to get through it; and the full-backs and wingers have worked together intelligently.

In those early parts of the season it was clear there was need for more tactical discipline and work on team shape. Opposition sides kept finding space in that pocket between Millwall’s defence and midfield.

Defenders were caught in two minds when playmakers such as Coventry’s James Maddison and Chesterfield’s Jay O’Shea were on the ball and picking out quick runners in behind.

Millwall conceded eleven goals in their first four home games.

Harris switched briefly to 4-3-3 as Millwall kept a first clean sheet of the season at Scunthorpe. That was also the game in which Archer made his senior competitive debut.

There was confidence to move back to 4-4-2 and slowly Millwall became more resilient, more difficult to play against, even if there were some inevitable speed bumps. Fewer and fewer of those have arrived in the last five months, though: Millwall have lost just four of their last 25 league and play-off games compared to eight of the previous 22. continued on next page...

COUNTDOWN TO WEMBLEY RECONNECTING WITH THE FANS

Early in the season there was a guy who sits near the press box who would make his displeasure known by screaming a word not fit for printing in a newspaper at the team and at Harris.

Maybe he got sick of watching defeats and a style of football that wasn’t kind on the eyes, but his voice hasn’t been heard for at least five months.

Millwall started the season with four defeats at home and ended it by going nine unbeaten at The Den. Since the turn of the year, players who were either out of the team, had played only as back-ups, or weren’t expected to make an impact until next season came centre-stage.

By October Harris had a settled side with Craig and Beevers ahead of Webster. Craig’s injury against Bradford gave Webster his chance but it was not until the start of this year that he really started to give the impression It was a suspension for Shaun Williams and an injury to Ed Upson that gave Ben Thompson the first chance in his Millwall career for an extended run in the first team.

Little over a year ago Mahlon Romeo was wondering what was next. He probably considered, after being released by a League One club, he’d have to move down for a chance to rise back up.

Who would have thought a week’s trial in April 2015 that captured little attention would be so significant to Millwall’s postChristmas run?

Harris watched Romeo in a practice game and saw enough to offer him a deal. Even the fact he was the first permanent signing of Harris’ reign went largely unremarked upon.

Millwall fans see something in each player that they identify the club’s values with.

The fact there was some worry when Webster limped off late against Bradford on Friday night speaks of how far he has come.

He has been a totem in a defence that conceded two goals in those last nine home games. Beevers is a naturally laid-back character and Webster has also benefited from that.

The rapport Thompson has with supporters is obvious. He’s a Lions fan, speaks of his genuine pride at representing the club and the way he plays without fear, usually against much more physically imposing players, strengthens that emotional bond.

It’s a connection that extends out and Harris and his management team have aroused and nurtured it by restoring Millwall’s identity. *** Harris will probably be back in a suit this Sunday, at least until kick-off when he might discard it for his

Ben Thompson, Byron Webster and Mahlon Romeo figured more prominently as the season went on

regular tracksuit.

He consistently turns praise for his own impact back on his players but the turnaround since the transition last summer, when eighteen players were cut from the squad and then the poor start, has been remarkable and he deserves credit for achieving his vison of the team he wanted.

Of course, Barnsley are writing their own remarkable story. In the

relegation zone just before Christmas, they embarked on an implausible run to finish sixth. They then hammered Walsall, who had finished third in League One, over two legs in the semi-final.

The Tykes have also beaten Millwall twice this season, but perhaps Harris’ side will benefit for having come through the more difficult, mentally and physically draining tie against

Bradford.

But even if the season isn’t to end in promotion, Millwall are in a lot better place than they were a year ago.

Harris has set the template for the future.

COUNTDOWN TO WEMBLEY

Millwall 0-4 Coventry (League One, August 15)

IT MIGHT seem odd to start with Millwall’s heaviest defeat of the season, but this game arguably did more than any other to shape the eventual make-up of the side.

Boss Neil Harris was at his most critical after this loss than after any other fixture in the season. "It really hurts to be honest,” he said. “And I'm not sure it hurts some of those players in the dressing room as much as it hurts me.”

Lee Martin didn’t start another league game for Millwall and it was almost a crucial moment in Mark Beevers’ season. He was taken off at halftime with Shane Ferguson coming off. Beevers, who was reportedly unsettled at the time and thinking of a move back up north, was dropped from the squad for the next game, a 3-2 defeat to Barnsley at The Den.

That could have signalled the end of Beevers’ Millwall career but instead his future was resolved and he returned to the starting XI as the Lions dug in to grind out a scoreless draw at Scunthorpe, their first clean sheet of the season.

The defeat to Coventry saw Harris lay down a marker to his squad about what was acceptable and what was unacceptable. It highlighted what kind of characters he would need to recruit, with George Saville the first loan signing to add bite to midfield.

Much has changed since and there are likely to be just four players who started against Coventry in the line-up on Sunday. JK

Southend United 0-4 Millwall (League One, December 28)

AFTER THREE straight league defeats, the Lions arrived at Roots Hall eleventh in the League One table, six points off the top six.

They had already won at Southend earlier in the month – a 2-0 win in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy – but this was by far the more important game.

Harris' side needed a performance – and they produced one of the highest quality.

Goals from Joe Martin, Cummings and Onyedinma eased Millwall into a 3-0 half-time lead and, with the travelling fans in a festive mood, O'Brien added a fourth 20 minutes from time, sending them home very happy. The victory took the club up to ninth, just three points behind Peterborough.

Despite being on the cusp of the play-offs, Southend's season went downwards from there.

You have to wonder what direction the rest of the

campaign would have gone had the Lions lost their last fixture of 2015. ML

Walsall 0-3 Millwall (League One, February 6) SITTING IN second position in the table, Walsall were flying high and looking for a return to the Championship for the first time since the 2003-04 season.

With experienced manager Sean O'Driscoll in the hot seat, the Saddlers looked to be tightening their grip on an automatic promotion place – his side had passed the Lions to death at The Den just weeks earlier (they had 71% possession in the first half). This looked like it would be the toughest of tough tests.

However, in true Millwall style, they were not intimidated and went on to win three precious points, and to top it off a star was born, too.

With Cummings and Carlos Edwards out, Harris handed 20-year-old right-back Mahlon Romeo his competitive senior debut at the

Bescot Stadium. Romeo had been earmarked for a season in the U21s but here was his early chance in the first team. And Romeo was outstanding. A crunching tackle early on endeared him immediately to the Lions fans present, but in the second half he garnished an already impressive performance with an outstanding goal.

After playing a one-two with Wallace wide on the right wing, Romeo surged through the Walsall defence and fired low into the net, sparking wild celebrations in the away end.

Gregory's two goals either side of that strike made it a comprehensive win and O’Driscoll wouldn’t last much longer in the Saddlers job. It was also a result that made the rest of the division sit up and take notice. ML

Sheffield United 1-2 Millwall (League One, October 24)

BY NOW Millwall fans had seen glimpses of what kind of team Harris was building.

There were still wobbles and a 5-3 defeat to Peterborough at the start of the month had suggested Millwall were a long way from getting it right defensively.

United were fifth in the League One table, six points ahead of Millwall before kick-off, and it only seemed a matter of time before they put one of those runs together that would sweep them all the way to the top. In Nigel Adkins they already had a manager with experience of the Premier League after back-to-back promotions with Southampton following one at Scunthorpe.

Harris was still very much in the rookie stage of his career.

He named three academy graduates – Fred Onyedinma, Ben Thompson and Aiden O’Brien

– alongside the on-loan Saville in midfield. There were 19,617 supporters inside Bramall Lane making it one of the most intense atmospheres some of those players had ever faced.

United started by zipping the ball around rapidly, and Onyedinma had to race 100 yards back to his own goal to flick away a dangerous cross.

But Millwall settled and stunned the home side when O’Brien turned home Shaun Cummings’ cross with the back of his head. The Blades looked like they had turned it their way when Jose Baxter equalised in the 70th minute, but Millwall didn’t shrink and O’Brien slid home the winner from Shane Ferguson’s cross with ten minutes left.

“They really battled and there were some good warriors out there today,” Harris said afterwards.

That was the template. JK

Chesterfield 1-2 Millwall (League One, January 23)

THE ARRIVAL of Jed Wallace on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers a fortnight before the trip to Chesterfield had given the Lions renewed hope.

His dazzling wing play, pace and explosiveness had already benefited Lee Gregory especially; the striker had scored in the club's last two league games against Oldham Athletic and Port Vale and with eight goals in the league to his name already, he was one away from equalling last season's total with over three months of the season still remaining.

Eight-hundred-and-fifty-four fans took in the Lions' first trip to the Proact Stadium, but Sam

Morsy's 25th-minute strike put Chesterfield into the lead, threatening to spoil the mood.

However, just two minutes later, O'Brien levelled, nodding home Ferguson's cross.

The scores were level at the break but shortly into the second half the Wallace/Gregory combination came up trumps again, as the winger's through-ball found the run of the striker, who poked home past Tommy Lee, giving the Lions a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

The win sent Millwall into the top six for the first time in the season – a place they did not leave for the remainder of the campaign. ML

Millwall 2-0 Burton Albion (League One, March 28) WITH THE Lions not hosting table-toppers BurtonAlbion until Easter Monday evening, results earlier in the day meant the club’s topsix position was under threat.

Coupled with a 1-0 defeat at Bradford City two days earlier, the feeling that the clash with the Brewers was a must-win had grown stronger by the time the Sky Sports cameras arrived in SE16.

Nigel Clough's men were looking for a win to take them four points clear of second-placed Wigan Athletic in their attempts to secure secondtier football for the first time in their history. But, instead, they ran into a determined Lions side who wrapped up the game before the break.

Despite a bright start from the visitors, it took just twelve minutes for Harris' side to breach the Burton defence. A hopeful punt forward from Thompson was chased down by Gregory and after some clever hold-up play he found the onrushing O'Brien who fired into the top corner beyond Burton goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin.

Six minutes later, Shaun Williams' through-ball caught out Burton’s high defensive line, allowing Gregory to waltz past the goalkeeper and slot into an empty net, doubling the lead and securing all three points.

It was a third win in a row at home, and a fourth without conceding a goal. The Lions' Den form was peaking at the right time. Our build-up won’t change and we’ll be very diligent preparing for the opposition as always. We’ll prepare the players and tell them what to expect from this Barnsley side.

We also focus on ourselves, what we’ve been good at this season and how we can affect the game. We’ll tie that in with our normal preparation for every away fixture, it won’t be any different to normal.

They’ve got a good all-round side, they’re athletic and have some really good footballers. They’re a good football team with a goal threat.

They’ve used the loan market really well, they’re a bit top-heavy with loans but those players have been effective for them.

There will be excitement and nervous anticipation, even among players from both squads who have experience playing at Wembley.

You have to use that to the best of your advantage and having players who have played there will be a big help.

The players who haven’t played there will have to take the lead off the ones who have. We’ve got great togetherness in this squad, real spirit in the group and an openness about the group.

Neil Harris was hopeful it was only a case of cramp affecting the centre-back.

Apart from long-term absentee Shaun Cummings, Webster is the only concern for Lions boss Harris heading into the Wembley clash on Sunday.

If Webster is fit, Harris will likely name the same side that started both legs of the 4-2 semi-final aggregate win over the Bantams.

Three of those starters – Webster, Abdou and Steve Morison – have all played in League One play-off finals, Webster with Yeovil Town when they defeated Brentford in 2013.

WE’VE GOT pace and energy throughout the team so it’s pointless sitting back and trying to contain teams.

We have to go at teams and try and affect them, because that’s the type of players we’ve got in the team.

We’re playing to their strengths.

We’ve got a group of players who are young so they’re athletic, they’re fit, so we play with pace.

We try and use their strengths so the

minimum is that the opposition have to match us.

But then add to that the quality the players have got, and the belief when they apply themselves well and do the right things and make good decisions, then they’re a force.

We’re a young side but as we’re giving them roles and responsibilities and asking them to do the same things over and over again they’re learning and getting better and better.

Barnsley caretaker manager Paul Heckingbottom could also stick with the side that defeated Walsall 3-1 in the second leg of their semifinal that completed a 6-1 aggregate rout.

The Tykes added midfielder Josh Brownhill and striker Ashley Fletcher, on loan from Preston and Manchester United respectively, to their squad since the last meeting between the sides, Barnsley’s 2-1 win at Oakwell in January.

Barnsley rose from the relegation zone in December to the top six and finished the regular season with a thumping 4-1 win at champions Wigan. They have lost just three of their 25 league and play-off games this year, form that makes them slight favourites ahead of Sunday’s final.

Millwall 2 - 3 Scunthorpe

MILLWALL HAD finished fifth in the league table, six points ahead of Scunthorpe.

But the Iron, under Nigel Adkins, had already beaten Millwall twice that season, 3-2 in October and 2-1 at The Den in January.

The Lions had defeated Leeds Untied 2-1 on aggregate in the semi-final, with Jimmy Abdou’s decisive goal in the second leg at Elland Road sending them through.

Scunthorpe were in the final after beating MK Dons 7-6 on penalties and got the perfect start when Matt Sparrow put them ahead in the sixth minute.

But Kenny Jackett’s side eventually gained control of the game and Gary

JACKETT AND his squad rebounded quickly, with some stunning form after Christmas sweeping them up the table to a third-place finish.

The Millwall boss had kept faith with the core of the group who had reached the final a year earlier, but crucially added Steve Morison who finished the season on 23 goals.

Where 2009 had been a pulsating contest, this was cagier.

Six minutes before the break, Paul Robinson was in the right place to fire home after some sloppy Swindon defending at a corner.

‘We’ve got our Millwall back’

BEN THOMPSON believes Neil Harris has turned around Millwall’s fortunes no matter how the season ends at Wembley on Sunday – but he wants to “top the season off” by claiming a place in the Championship.

Harris took over the Lions job at the end of last season with the club in disarray before he completely remodelled the squad in the summer.

After a difficult start to the season Millwall gradually began to develop a playing style characterised by an uncompromising and committed approach, and their form in 2016 propelled them up the table.

They confirmed their place in the final with a 4-2 aggregate semi-final win over a Bradford side that had already beaten them this season.

Millwall meet Barnsley this weekend, and Thompson highlighted how Harris has changed the whole mood in and around the club.

“As people have been saying, we’ve got our Millwall back,” Thompson said. “The club’s in a lot better shape than it was last year or the year before. There’s a better atmosphere, players get on with each other. The manager and the players have a good relationship and it’s been a great season no matter what happens.

“But we don’t want to go to Wembley and lose, we want to go and top the season off with a win.

If we were to lose it wouldn’t affect the club, everyone would still be looking forward to next season.

“But everyone wants to go and win this.”

After Harris took on the job full-time, Thompson revealed he made a promise to the squad that has since become a reality.

Thompson explained: “In the meeting when he was first appointed full-time manager he talked us through everything and what he expected and what he wanted.

“He said he wanted us to experience a full Den and now I know why he wanted that, it was an unreal night against Bradford.

“I didn’t get to sleep after it, I got home and went to my room and watched the game back. It was surreal.”

Thompson was in the stands when Millwall defeated Swindon in the play-off final in 2010 and can’t wait for the experience of being on the pitch performing for up to 40,000 Lions fans.

“Even as a fan you’re nervous, as much as a player,” Thompson said.

“Everything’s just a big buzz, the walk to the stadium, looking around the ground, getting your food at

“It was a great atmosphere then and will be even better as a player. I’ve said to people who’ve asked me about the atmosphere that it’s loud in the stands but on the pitch it’s a different story, it’s crazy.

“When it’s a big occasion like Wembley, it’s a different ball game.

The atmosphere will affect some players as will the build-up. It’s about who turns up on the day and wants it the most.

He added: “The more senior players who have experienced it will help the younger players out and the players who haven’t played there before.

“I’ve spoken to them about Wembley. They’ve all said it’s the best place to play your football as long as you win. It’s a bad day if you don’t so everyone’s looking forward to going there – and we’re going to get a result.”

GARY ALEXANDER knows the feeling of despair as a player at Wembley – and he doesn’t want to experience it as a fan this Sunday.

Alexander scored two goals in the 2009 play-off final against Scunthorpe, his second putting Millwall 2-1 up before half-time, a lead they held until 20 minutes to go in front of 59,661 fans at Wembley.

But Matt Sparrow equalised before Martyn Woolford struck the winner

with five minutes left to end their chance of promotion to the Championship.

Alexander will be one of a number of current boss Neil Harris’ former teammates watching and hoping he can deliver as a manager what he helped to do as a player when Millwall defeated Swindon 1-0 in the final a year later.

Alexander, who is now the playermanager of Greenwich Borough, remembers the feeling when the final whistle blew seven years ago.

“I just sat on the pitch absolutely devastated,” Alexander said. “You think ‘what a waste of two goals’. It’s

a dream come true to score at Wembley but I’d have preferred not scoring and for us to have won the game. It would have been better had someone scored a scrappy goal and we’d won 1-0.

“It feels like all that hard work put in all season is gone in 90 minutes. We had to prepare then for next season but you never know what is around the corner. I was injured most of the following year so that was a massive disappointment.”

says Kenny Jackett made sure the squad stuck to the same routine in the build-up to the 2009 final and knows there will be a lot of excitement in the current squad ahead of Sunday.

“For lads in League One and League Two the thought of going to Wembley is unbelievable,” Alexander said.

“We had quite a big gap to the final between beating Leeds in the semifinal so it was about keeping the lads fresh and motivated.

“We kept it as normal as we could, we had three or four days off in between. But it was the first time going to Wembley for a lot of us and it

was a complete and utter buzz. The time couldn’t go quickly enough.

“Scunthorpe were the form team going into the final. I think when we went 2-1 up we thought we’d turned it around and they might crumble but fair play to them they fought back.

“I could have made it 3-1 but it wasn’t to be. You can’t afford to underestimate anyone at Wembley, teams are there because they deserve it. It’s usually the side that finishes sixth that’s made the late run and in 2009 it was Scunthorpe.”

Millwall put the disappointment of that defeat behind them to finish third the next year before beating Swindon in the play-off decider.

Harris, Tony Craig and David Forde were in that side and take that experience into this weekend.

Alexander also cites the influence in the dressing room of leaders such as Paul Robinson, Andy Frampton and Alan Dunne, as well as the addition of Steve Morison, in ensuring the players returned to pre-season training that summer determined to make amends.

“It just shows the mentality of the squad,” Alexander said. “We’d been hurt and we wanted to respond. You add someone like Moro who was young and hungry and coming through as well. He was there watching in 2009 because he was a potential signing.

“It’s not easy losing one play-off final and bouncing back to win the next one. You could come back in the new season on a downer but we had too much mental strength in the dressing room for that. That was part of the reason we got promoted the next year.”

This time Alexander will be in the stands, roaring on the club he served so well.

“Hopefully it will be a win for Millwall,” he said. “Barnsley have found form and it will be tough. But Neil has got us playing the Millwall way, playing in the opponent’s half and defending well.

“I think we can go there and put in a good performance, similar to the other night when Bradford didn’t really have many chances.

“Hopefully on Sunday we can be solid again and nick our goals.”

Former skipper surprised how quickly Harris has revived club STUART NETHERCOTT has urged Millwall to not do anything differently and keep a solid foundation as they look to return to the Championship at the first attempt on Sunday.

The Lions take on Barnsley in the League One play-off final at Wembley Stadium and the ex-captain believes that the confidence in Neil Harris' side should be huge as they aim to win promotion.

“Don't change anything that you've done in the last couple of months,” Nethercott said when asked what teamtalk he would give in the Wembley dressing room were he in charge. “Don't play any different. Attack, but have a solid base. Stick to 4-4-2, trust your strikers – they'll win you the game. Get a clean sheet and you'll win it.”

“The confidence should be sky high and I can't see why they can't see the job through.”

The former defender will be at Sunday's final and thinks that the current set-up would survive in the second tier should they defeat the Tykes: “I'm looking forward to it. I'd rather the club went up as champions or runners-up, but the play-offs are something special. If you could choose a way to go up and you knew you were going to do it, you'd choose the playoffs. I never experienced it as a player myself, but it's a great opportunity for the boys to get back up into the Championship.”

wouldn't be much tinkering needed, maybe a back-up striker but apart from that, there's not much that needs to be done.”

Nethercott played with Harris in one of Millwall's most successful sides in 2000-01, but he never really believed that the striker would become a Millwall manager.

He explained: “Neil wasn't the first one in the dressing room that you would've thought of as a future manager. Dychey (Sean Dyche), definitely, but not Neil. But he's brought the passion back to the club.”

“It's not rocket science, is it? The last two that came in (Steve Lomas and Ian Holloway) struggled to interact with the supporters. Neil can never go wrong with that. He's brought the heart and soul back into the club. He's kept David (Livermore) there as well, which is a good appointment. Hopefully they can get us back to where we belong.”

The ex-skipper has been impressed with the improvement Harris has brought about this season after relegation, even if it wasn’t totally expected. “I didn't really him doing this well in his first full season of management,” Nethercott admitted.

“It's surprised me how soon he's come into it and how quickly he's got the ball rolling.”

“They're an exciting side and there's a

lot of similarities to the side I played in (in 2000-01). They have two similar wingers in Chris Taylor and Shane Ferguson, two similar up front in Lee Gregory and Steve Morison, a solid base and a quick tempo. Neil has brought a lot of the young boys through as well, like in our days – that's what you need. It's alright having budgets, but you need some home-grown players for the crowd to interact with.”

As a former centre-half, Nethercott also spoke of his admiration for the Lions' current centre-backs, Mark Beevers and Byron Webster.

“They're a very solid pairing. It took Neil a few months to get them together.

Sid Nelson had a go, but the pairing of those two is now solid. Right down the middle of the side you have strong pairings and they're spot on. The fullbacks look good as well. All in all, it's looking a good team, but they're facing a very fine Barnsley side at the weekend.”

Meanwhile, the former Spurs defender featured in a Millwall Legends side which romped to a 4-0 victory over Charlton Legends on Monday night , with Nethercott saying he enjoyed being back on the Den turf. Players such as Richie Sadlier and Robbie Ryan had to pull out, but Nethercott says he will catch up with some old team-mates again.

“Unfortunately there were a few late phone calls with some of my lot, but hopefully we can all get together and give it another crack next season.”

FORMER LIONS player Peter Sweeney has told Neil Harris' young players to “embrace” and “enjoy” Sunday's Wembley visit.

The winger was just 20 years old when he lined up against Manchester United in the 2004 FA Cup final at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff – and he had a message for the likes of Ben Thompson and Jordan Archer ahead of this weekend's playoff final with Barnsley.

Sweeney said: “Try and embrace it all. It goes very quickly. You just assume that this sort of thing will happen all the time, that these games are normal. But some of them might never play at Wembley again. Just embrace it and enjoy it as much as you can – it's quite a good occasion.”

Sweeney played with manager Harris during his time at The Den and despite his surprise at how quickly the legendary striker has made a difference, he always felt he had management potential.

“He always had it in him to be a manager” said Sweeney. “I said at the time that he was a great appointment and the best man for the job to lift Millwall back to where they should be. I didn't think he'd do so well so quickly, but he's taken everything in his stride. But, having played with him for a good few years, you knew he had it in him.”

Millwall play their 58th game of the season in all competitions on Sunday. And in contrast to the cliché, the former Lions winger believes that this weekend's final cannot be seen as another normal fixture in the campaign.

“It's not just another game, it's massive,” Sweeney said. “It's a big day and what is at stake is also massive. Obviously I didn't play in the FA Cup Final at Wembley, but with the size of the crowd that will be there, the players will know (how big it is).”

Sweeney was speaking after a Millwall Legends side defeated Charlton Legends at The Den on Monday night in a charity match for Know The Score UK.

BERMONDSEY COMMUNITY Kitchen trainees visited Peckham’s Copeland Park on Wednesday May 18 to meet potential employers and show them first hand their enthusiasm.

Visiting restaurants such as The Nines, six young people aged 16-24 spoke to owners to find out more about their work and to decide whether they would like to apply for a job.

As part of Southwark Council’s Seeds program, involving companies Tree Shepherd and Southwark Work, Bermondsey Community Kitchen had the opportunity to meet and greet businesses.

Catherine Blaikie, employment engagement manager for Tree Shepherd, said: “These young people who are involved with the scheme have had significant barriers to employment in their lives.

“It’s all about getting them into work and developing skills that will help them for the rest of their lives.

“Every one of these young people has the potential to shine and this project is about getting them to shine.”

The Bermondsey Community Kitchen was started by Duns Deli owner Mike Donovan in September last year after he kept seeing young people with “nothing to do and nowhere to go”.

He said: “I could have decided to work with Tesco where I would have just been stacking shelves. It’s much better to be here and trying to learn some new skills.

“There’s not a lot of people in the group so it easy for someone to help us if we don’t understand something.”

Trainees are given the chance to learn new skills and receive a Level two City and Guilds qualification in professional cookery.

Steven Kavanagh, 21, said: “I’ve been here for just three weeks. It’s been really good, really engaging. I couldn’t cook before I started here but I’m making mincemeat and apple pies now.

“I’m a hands on learner. I will learn how to do it properly if I get the chance to.

“At first I was like I will give it a try but when I started it was really good.

I now arrive early each day and asked if I can do extra days. I like the feeling of hard work, it’s really rewarding.”

The kitchen recently saw three students taken on fulltime at the Tate Modern after an interview and a skills test.

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark and in consultation with Transport for London hereby gives notice that because of Cycle Lane Works by the London Borough of Southwark made an order the effect of which will be to suspend the cycle lane in the above named road.

Whilst works are in progress, and whilst the authorised traffic signs are displayed, no person shall cause any vehicle to enter, proceed, stop, wait, load or unload in the northbound and Southbound Cycle Lane In Southwark Bridge Road between Borough Road and Marshalsea Road.

THE KIA Oval recently welcomed over 5,000 children from schools all over south London and Surrey to the annual Schools Day.

Always one of the most memorable days of the year, the children came from primary and secondary schools across Surrey and south London, packing into the ground to enjoy a day’s cricket and make one hell of a racket!

Children from schools across Lambeth and Southwark mingled with kids from Wandsworth, Croydon, Woking, Guildford and everywhere in between and they watched Surrey play Middlesex on the third day of the London Derby in the Specsavers County Championship Division One. As well as the cricket, the children were entertained by club mascot Caesar the Lion, a visit from our near neighbours at Vauxhall City Farm, Surrey Cricket Foundation coaches, and the chance to get autographs from Surrey players, including Surrey

players and England Internationals Daniel Levey (England Learning Difficulties) and Lois Turner (England Women’s Visually Impaired).

On the field, a magnificent half century from over 200 balls from Ben Foakes and some lower order grit from Gareth Batty – followed by an unbeaten partnership of 98 between Rory Burns and Arun Harinath in the second innings – saw Surrey bat themselves back into the match against Middlesex.

Paul Taylor, Head of the Surrey Cricket Foundation who organised the day, said: “Schools Day is always an incredible day and probably our biggest single chance of the year to bring the game of cricket to a huge group of children.

“To see over 5,000 kids in the ground at one time – all cheering for Surrey and using the game of cricket to help further their educations is a truly inspiring experience for anybody to see. Hopefully, it was similarly inspirational to the kids themselves!”

The latest win for Haye never looked in doubt from the outset at the O2 in Greenwich, with Gjergjaj looking out of his depth

VETERAN WELTERWEIGHT Pete McDonagh could be in line to face ex-world champion Junior Witter in his next bout in July.

The ex-Fisher ABC man will have accumulated a three year unbeaten run in the ring by fight night on July 9, when he will box on the under card of the Tyson Fury v Wladimir Klitschko bout at the MEN Arena.

According to respected boxing website boxingscene.com McDonagh could face Witter, who was champion of the world back in 2008.

Since losing his title that year the

Sheffield man’s career has somewhat stalled, but he would still be a notable name for McDonagh to defeat as the 38-year-old continues to defy his age and critics with a string of good victories.

McDonagh was born in Galway, Ireland but was based for many years in Bermondsey where he came under the tutelage of Steve Hiser at his amateur gym in the north of Southwark.

The 38-year-old is the current Irish welterweight title holder and was last in the ring in March when he picked up a points win over Lithuanian Arvydas Trizno.

Dulwich CC break bank to secure win

DULWICH CRICKET Club (CC) picked up their second league win of the season on Saturday when they defeated the Bank of England CC by three runs.

Put into bat opener Tom Savill proved to be the lynch pin of the Dulwich innings by hitting 56 runs in 54 balls, a knock that included six fours and two sixes.

Richard Rawlings was a thorn in the side for Dulwich as he took five wickets for just sixteen runs, but the visitors were still able to accumulate 196 runs in 50 overs thanks to knocks of 32 each from Salaar Waqar and Leon Sealy.

When the home side batted Josh Andrighetto appeared to be taking the game away from Dulwich, only for Waqar to remove him for 61, the fifth Bank of England wicket to fall.

Waqar took three more wickets after that to end with figures of four for 25.

The rest of the Dulwich attack all chipped in with a wicket each as the Southwark team were able to secure a tight win in the final over when Waqar dismissed home skipper Janil Ramesh with the final ball of the game with just three runs to spare.

The win leave Dulwich in sixth place in Division Two of The Travelbag Surrey Championship, but they are only four points behind second placed Chessington in the early stages of the season.

Haye’s journey back continues and although Briggs still has a punchers chances the Bermondsey man should have too much for him later this year, then it’s onto better and bigger fights and hopefully a big step up in quality of opposition.

Curran stars as Surrey win T20 opener

TOM CURRAN STARRED with bat and ball as Surrey won their first T20 encounter of the season at Essex last Friday night.

The 21-year-old will have to share the plaudits with Pakistani veteran Azhar Mahmood as the duo helped build a total they could bowl at, and then did the majority of the damage with the ball in hand.

When Surrey batted first at Chelmsford and were reduced to 80/6 by the home side victory looked to be a long way off.

But Curran, 32 off 26 balls, and the 41-year-old Mahmood, 44 off 22 balls, saw the visitors post 170 in their allotted overs.

Mahmood then took two early

wickets before Curran picked up three scalps, for just 21 runs, allowing the Pakistani star to mop up the tail and secure an eight run victory.

In the County Championship Surrey secured nine points as they played out a rain affected contest at the Kia Oval against Middlesex that ended in a draw.

Batting first the north London side scored 395, with Nick Gubbins top scoring with 91, before the home team mustered 242 in response.

That total allowed Middlesex to take up the option to force Surrey to bat again, but the rain and a stubborn unbeaten stand of 98 from openers Rory Burns and Arun Harinath meant the game petered out to a stalemate.

Lionesses take point against Toffees

MILLWALL LIONESSES ended a run of three defeats by taking a point against promotion chasers Everton Ladies on Sunday.

The Lionesses last picked up a point a month ago when they held current league leaders Yeovil Town Ladies in a 1-1 draw.

Since that date they have fell to defeat against London Bees, a return fixture against Yeovil and a 1-0 reverse against Oxford Women.

But Sunday saw something of a return to form especially when a Rinsola Babajide goal gave the visiting Millwall side a half time lead.

But Kelly Jones levelled things up in the second period for the Toffees and both sides took a point from their final fixture before the mid-season break.

Lionesses Leanne Cowan said after the game: “There were big improvements on our last team performance, when we played against Oxford.

“We’ve had a difficult week in camp, but to pick it up and get a point against a good Everton side means a lot for us.

A MUCH more straightforward semi-final than most had anticipated, and ideal preparation for Barnsley.

Millwall will head to Wembley supremely confident, but so will the Tykes after destroying Walsall, who had finished third in League one, 61 on aggregate.

If the Lions are looking at where they might have the edge on a Barnsley side that has already beaten them twice this season, then coming through the more difficult side of the draw is one potential advantage.

Although Bradford were largely toothless over both legs, these were relentlessly physical contests.

Walsall, on the other hand, barely laid a glove on Barnsley. Millwall won’t be as meek, and they will bring the same physical, confrontational and direct style to Wembley this weekend that they have employed for most of the season.

Any suspicions Millwall would sit on their twogoal lead last Friday night were banished from the first whistle. Neil Harris’ side pressed high up the pitch, fired by the wall of noise from the stands. It was ear-splitting at times.

At the back Byron Webster and Mark Beevers picked up where they had left off at Valley Parade but the worry was always the lack of pace in Carlos Edwards’ 37-year-old legs against the more sprightly Kyel Reid.

In the first ten minutes the home support wanted two penalties when Shane Ferguson’s cross appeared to hit Stephen Darby’s arm and then Jimmy Abdou went down under a challenge in the box. But they would have been harsh awards.

Millwall stretched their aggregate lead to three goals when Lee Gregory put them ahead in the 34th minute, firing the ball low past Ben Williams from outside the box after some nifty footwork from Steve Morison.

Morison and Gregory were involved in another ferocious physical battle with Nathan Clarke and Rory McArdle. But it was the strikers’ more subtle strengths that had led to the opening goal. On Sunday Morison and his strike partner won’t give Alfie Mawson and Marc Roberts a moment’s rest.

But Bradford weren’t cowed by the increased injection of noise after Gregory’s 27th goal of the season and it was down that left side, when Reid exploited his pace advantage, that their equaliser came. Reid sprinted into the box to pick out Jamie Proctor, and though Jordan Archer spread himself to save the initial shot, the striker swept the rebound to the roof of the net.

At that point, with the crowd temporarily silenced, it seemed the strike would be the catalyst for a sustained Bradford onslaught after the break.

They did dominate possession and territory but they never really looked like they were capable of prising open Millwall, who largely kept them at arm’s length.

That was down to another solid performance from a defence that conceded just two goals in the last nine games at The Den this season.

It was also down to the protection in front of them. Ben Thompson again did more than should be reasonably expected of a 20-year-old who only became a first-team regular in February.

Beside him Abdou, often unheralded, produced arguably his best performance of the season. He was everywhere for Millwall and made so many vital contributions. Yes, he should have scored after the break when McArdle’s weak header fell to him in a great position in the box, but in the

77th minute he was doing what he does so well.

With Lee Evans bursting forward from midfield and looking set to shoot, Abdou sprinted back to flick the ball safely to Archer. That kind of awareness of danger and determination to cut it out will be crucial this weekend.

Moments before that intervention he had been doubled over trying to get his breadth back after so much running.

In the second period he also had to be aware of Reid’s threat against Edwards and with ten minutes to go it was clear how much he was feeling the effort he had put in. Yet still he found some reserve of energy again to help Joe Martin deal with Proctor, Bradford’s main threat, on the other side of the pitch as the away side desperately sought a second goal.

It was probably only the neutral who would have felt sympathy for Bradford as the home fans began to congregate pitchside in the closing moments.

At that point it was impossible for the players to retain concentration. The stadium announcer did his best to warn fans to stay off the pitch but it was obvious it would have no effect.

The last few minutes were marked by several incursions, with one fan even kicking the ball while it was still in play. Manager Harris came onto the pitch to appeal to the most exuberant to get off it. Thompson did likewise, while Morison looked furious.

Injury-time effectively became time for referee Tim Robinson to plan the players and officials’ safe route to the tunnel. They had already rolled towards the touchline as if on a sloped pool table as Williams prepared to take one last kick-out and as soon as the whistle went it was everyone for themselves.

That won’t be repeated this weekend, but victory will spark joyous scenes.

DEN DIARY YOUNG DUO REWARDED

JAMIE PHILPOT and Kyron Farrell this week signed new deals with Millwall.

Centre-forward Philpot has penned a contract until the summer of 2018, while Farrell has been given a new one-year deal.

Philpot, nineteen, has made six firstteam appearances this season, setting up Steve Morison’s winner against Fleetwood after coming on as a halftime substitute for the injured Lee Gregory. He is highly rated by the club for his work rate and movement.

Farrell, an eighteen-year-old central midfielder, nailed down a regular starting spot in Justin Skinner’s U21 side this season.

BOSS ON LIONS LIVE

NEIL HARRIS will be on Lions Live ahead of this weekend’s playoff final against Barnsley.

Harris will be reflecting on a season of change that he hopes will end in Wembley glory.

The team will also be talking to defensive pillar Byron Webster. The 29year-old was in and out of the first team in the early parts of the season but has emerged as crucial part of the Lions defence.

GARY ALEXANDER scored a hat-trick at The Den on Monday night as the Millwall Legends beat a Charlton Legends side 4-0 in a fixture to raise money for Nicky Johns' bowel cancer charity.

Johns played in goal for Millwall and made a number of saves before starting the second half between the sticks for the Addicks.

He had less luck in Charlton’s goal with Mark Beard giving Millwall the lead before Alexander, who still plays for Greenwich Borough where he is also the manager, grabbed his treble.

Nicky and Alison Johns’ set up the Mr Brightside charity in memory of their son Stephen, who died from bowel cancer at the age of 25.

The Johns family have been working to raise awareness of the disease alongside other bowel cancer charities under the Know the Score banner.

They have given out thousands of 'Know the Score' badges to football fans around the country, and every penny received by the charity pays for badges and information about bowel cancer.

The gate receipts from a crowd of almost 250 and money from the raffle held after the game went to Mr Brightside to help them with their campaign.

Nicky Johns said after the game: “I'd like to thank Millwall and Charlton, and all the fans of both clubs who have supported us, not only tonight, but over a number of years.

“Thanks also to the players and officials who gave up their time to play in this match.”

GREGORY COMES IN SECOND

MILLWALL STRIKER Lee Gregory was pipped in the race for the PFA Fans' League One Player of the Season award by Wigan’s Will Grigg.

Grigg fired 25 league goals to help the Latics win the League One title.

Gregory is on 27 goals in all competitions with one game remaining this season.

In a close race, Wigan striker Grigg just came out on top, picking up 9,680 votes ahead Gregory, who picked up 9,520.

Gillingham midfielder Bradley Dack finished in third place, followed by Shrewsbury’s Sullay Kaikai, Swindon’s Nicky Ajose and Romaine Sawyers of Walsall were next.

MANAGER NEIL Harris is hoping for a huge Lions support will help inspire his side to victory in the League One final against Barnsley at Wembley on Sunday.

Millwall got their biggest home crowd of the season for last Friday night’s 1-1 draw with Bradford at The Den which was enough for a 42 aggregate win to set up a decider with a place in the Championship at

stake.

The club have a ticket allocation of more than 39,000, with most if not all of those expected to be snapped up.

Barnsley will also bring big numbers south.

“I think it’ll be a really good crowd, two really well-supported teams, two clubs that have regularly plied their trade in the Championship,” Harris said. “It’s also two teams that have really come a long way since Christmas. You’ve probably got two sets of fans who

have enjoyed watching their sides since then.

“We’ll certainly have thirty or forty thousand fans which will be terrific for us. They’ll be extremely noisy and they will certainly spur the players on.

“The reward at the end of the game is the driving force. And when you have that kind of vocal support, a twelfth man, it’s a really big advantage.”

“We don’t know yet, it’s a real rush job with him if he’s to have any chance,” Harris said. “He damaged his hamstring against Bradford so to get that right with a nine-day turnaround will be difficult.

“If he’s available to train later in the week he’ll be given that opportunity.

If not then we’ve got Tony Craig and Sid Nelson ready to step in.”

Club captain Craig hasn’t started a game since last October but will likely be given the nod if Webster doesn’t recover.

The 20-year-old will start in midfield for Millwall against Barnsley on Sunday in front of what is expected to be more than 70,000 fans at Wembley.

Thompson joked he has been dealing with a much higher demand for tickets and while he will have plenty of support this weekend, some of his friends won’t hold back if he has an off-day.

He said: “My family are looking forward to it and I’ve had thousands of messages from people that are close to me. Everyone’s looking forward to it.

“I don’t think there’s any pressure from anyone, they’re all proud watching me out there in a Millwall shirt and they enjoy watching me play. They want the best for me even if some of my mates will give me stick if I don’t play well.

“But I’ll go out there and give it 100 per cent, I can’t do any more than that.”

Thompson admitted he had trouble sleeping before the two legs of the semi-final tie against Bradford, but is keeping calm ahead of Sunday.

“You can’t think too much about it or stress about it too much, you’ve got to clear your mind,” Thompson said. “You’ve got to treat it as just another game while obviously enjoying the build-up and the atmosphere there. But when the first whistle goes all that’s over and done with and you just concentrate on the game.”
