London Bridge a traffic nightmare

S

pare a thought for businesses that need to get in and out of the London Bridge area, or indeed for taxi drivers plying their trade, as the area is fast becoming a no go zone for traffic.

Years of work on the Shard have meant the through route of St Thomas’ is now just a distant memory - but with the announcement that Tooley Street eastbound traffic is to be cut off until February 2018, the crawl will reduce to a standstill.

The works begin next month on the new London Bridge station entrances and to add insult to injury, will coincide with the closure of Tower Bridge to traffic for three months from October.

Given that commuters who use Tower Bridge will now head for the Rotherhithe Tunnel, expect to see the knock-on effect create even more of a snarl up along Jamaica Road as well.

Who will blink first in doctor row?

T

here doesn’t seem to be any clear end point for the war between junior doctors and Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt in their row over new contracts.

Junior doctors launched their first ‘allout’ strike this week, over two days, and refused to cover even A&E care - an escalation on previous strikes.

While patients in A&Es may actually have quite appreciated being seen by expert consultants, who’d been drafted in to cover during the strike, this is clearly not a scenario that can keep on happening. The government argue that they are simply trying to change junior doctors’ contracts - their pay and hours so that the nation can have a good NHS service seven days a week, something no one will sensibly argue against.

But the argument isn’t that black and white. The junior doctors say that the deal will leave them worse off, and with the NHS often seeming like it’s creaking at the seams, the last thing anyone wants is a disenchanted medical workforce. The NHS must partly run on its staff’s good nature and willingness to work in challenging circumstances. It certainly is an unusual scenario when doctors are cast as radicals.

So who will blink first? Jeremy Hunt seems immoveable, but the junior doctors have fought a passionate campaign. At the moment it seems that, whilst the public would welcome a ‘7 day NHS’, they actually do support the junior doctors in their campaign.

Surely people would prefer the government to offer its own acceptable concessions, rather than stubbornly to refuse, in a bid to save face?

US PRESIDENT Barack Obama and the Duke of Edinburgh visited Southwark last weekend to honour the 400th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare.

The Bishop of Southwark, the Rt Revd Christopher Chessun, said: “I am delighted there are strong bonds between Shakespeare’s Globe and Southwark Cathedral, which would have been his parish church.

President Obama was welcomed into Shakespeare’s Globe on the morning of Saturday, April 23, by the cast of Hamlet, who have just returned from a world tour, where he was treated to scenes from the play.

Dominic Dromgoole, Artistic Director of Shakespeare’s Globe, said: “At the end of an extraordinary journey all around the world, it is great to return home to the Globe, and to be able to perform a few scenes and to be welcomed back by President Barack Obama.

“The spirit of ‘Yes we can’ has informed the entire tour, and it’s an honour to meet the man who coined the phrase, and who exemplifies its spirit.”

Meanwhile Southwark Cathedral welcomed His Royal Highness Prince Philip to join a special service celebrating Shakespeare’s life and works.

Residents nail front door shut after finding people drinking, taking drugs and having sex in their communal corridor EXCLUSIVE

ROUGH SLEEPERS have been having sex, drinking, doing drugs and smoking in the hallways of an Elephant and Castle estate, causing residents to fear for their children’s lives.

Terrified families living in L&Q run flats at Arch Street have nailed the street-facing front door shut to stop strangers coming into their building late at night.

Trespassers still get in, however, as the security gate behind the block is broken, allowing them access through the backdoor.

Ruth Reyes, a mother of two, said: "We do not feel safe. We have kids and are worried about a fire happening from the rough sleepers smoking in here. And where would we go? The front door is blocked and I don't know if the back one will open.

"I have to carry all my things to work in the morning, like my laptop and my phone, and I'm worried about who might attack me on my way out."

The intruders have defecated,

urinated and vomited in the stairwells and threaten anyone telling them to leave, residents say. Adan Tabed, 36, father of one, said: "Even the security room where the cameras are was broken into. The rough sleepers leave cigarettes, alcohol and used drugs out as well as condoms. They (L&Q) put heavy locks where the camera room is but we are not protected as tenants. We have been neglected.

"For the amount they spend on fixing the doors they could have got a security guard. One of us left a pram in the open and they urinated on it.

"We are in a busy area and we need to have security. We have kids here."

The residents have accused L&Q of ignoring their calls for help and for not caring about their safety.

An L&Q spokesperson said: “L&Q is working closely with local partners, residents and the police to address ongoing issues including antisocial behaviour and trespassing at our Arch Street development.

“We are in the process of increasing security across the site including fencing and new robust security doors as well as a number of other measures.

“We are very grateful for residents’ continued patience and cooperation while we work with them to find a permanent solution to these issues.”

Teenager stabbed in broad daylight PECKHAM

A TEENAGER was stabbed in broad daylight in Peckham on Monday evening, sending passers-by running with fright.

Police have confirmed the victim, a seventeen-year-old boy, was attacked near the junction between Hanover Park and Rye Lane in Peckham.

Police were called at about 5.15pm to reports of a man suffering a stab wound.

The victim was taken by air ambulance to a south London hospital where he was reported to be in a stable condition with non-lifethreatening injuries.

No arrests have been made, and enquiries continue. Call 101 to help police with their investigations.

ONE OF the borough’s major roads is to be closed to eastbound traffic from next month until February 2018.

Works on Tooley Street start with a full closure between Borough High Street to Bermondsey Street on April 30 to May 3.

As work begins on the new London Bridge station entrances, the street, which houses major international business firms as well as the council’s HQ and the Greater London Assembly building, will be closed to eastbound traffic from May 3 to February 2018 with diversions in place.

The works will coincide with the closure of Tower Bridge to traffic for three months, from October this year for structural works.

A TfL spokesperson said: “As our work moves across the station we need to locate a worksite on Tooley Street.

“From April 30, we start work on the new station entrance on Tooley Street and from August 2016 will begin to rebuild platforms one to three.

“We need to extend the worksite beyond the station footprint to safely undertake the work on the station front. This means we must close the southern footpath and one lane of traffic.

“This has been agreed with Southwark Council and Transport for London.”

All vehicles wanting to travel east down Tooley Street will need to follow the diversion route via Borough High Street, Great Dover Street and Tower Bridge Road for the duration of the works.

Parts of old timber transport route could be revived in new regeneration plans EXCLUSIVE

PLANS TO revive part of the route of the old Grand Surrey Canal have been unveiled in consultations on April 21 for a regeneration project at Malt Street near the Old Kent Road.

The canal was officially opened in 1826 to transport timber to the Surrey Commercial Docks and was filled in the 1970s to become an industrial estate that has since shut.

Berkeley Homes is now trying to link the Old Kent Road to Burgess Park along a section of the old canal route, as part of a project to build new homes and make the area more accessible.

Debbie Noel, an Old Kent Road resident, said: “Generally we are 90 per cent in favour of it as the area is run down and does not have much going on. The Old Kent Road is known for being old and having different styles.

“The great thing about the Old Kent Road is that it is so diverse with all sorts of different people living here.

We need to make sure it looks and

feels the same, so it will be interesting with tower blocks being built.

“The green route is an interesting idea that came from one of our meetings.

“Making the park more accessible and extending the green lanes is a great way to make us feel more like a community. Any added green areas are more than welcome.”

The route is intended to incorporate art features as well as stretches of water, to remind residents of the area’s history.

Peter Davidson, Land Director at Berkeley Homes, said: “We were delighted that so many people took the time to come and view our initial concept proposals for the Malt Street Regeneration last week. The feedback we have received will be vitally important as we bring forward more detailed plans later this year.

“We are currently reviewing the feedback and we were pleased that there was particular interest in the new public open spaces we are proposing.”

The proposed regeneration at Malt Street is part of the Old Kent Road Opportunity Area outlined by London Mayor Boris Johnson and Southwark Council.

THE HISTORIC Albion dry dock uncovered near Canada Water two weeks ago will not be destroyed, according to the property developers working on the site.

Sellars Property Group confirmed this week that the dock would be “retained and preserved” but it is not yet clear to what extent.

The historic find is currently open for viewing to the public for a limited time before construction work covers it.

A Sellars Property spokesperson said: “As part of the new, mixed-use retail and residential scheme currently on site, the dry dock will be retained and preserved, protecting the site’s history for future generations.

“The scale of the structure is

phenomenal – and is definitely worth a visit. The viewing platform, which is located at the side of the Decathlon store adjacent to the site, is publicly accessible.”

On Wednesday, as the News went to press, a representative from the Museum of London Archaeology gave a short talk about the history of the site.

Dating back to the mid-1870s, it’s thought that the Dock was originally built around the same time as the Surrey Commercial Docks and was fundamental to the maintenance of boats.

By the mid-1980s, the docks was disused, leading to a period of redevelopment.

The Albion Dry Dock was preserved and backfilled during the re-development works in the 1990s and the site was transformed into a retail warehouse.

A SECOND World War code cracker who dedicated much of his later-life to raising money for charity as he stood in Surrey Quays Shopping Centre, passed away on April 15 after a chest infection.

Charlie Bewick, 88, died peacefully in his sleep after leading a fulfilling life combating not only Nazis in the Second World War, but also diabetes and blindness, conquering Mt Sinai without sight with a guide in 2000.

Residents will remember seeing Charlie in his army uniform collecting for the Royal Legion and Guide Dogs for the Blind across the borough. He was also the Neighbourhood Watch man for his Rotherhithe estate, and was awarded the Liberty of the Old Metropolitan Borough of Bermondsey and of Southwark for his work in the community.

Born in 1927 in Singapore, Charlie came to England when he was sevenyears-old and joined the Royal Signals

when he was sixteen after leaving Kingham Hill School, staying in Germany after the war as a glider pilot.

During the Second World War he used Morse code for the Allies to communicate and helped to crack enemy code.

Jane Woods, Charlie’s daughter, said: “Dad was 65 when he lost his sight because of diabetes but that didn’t slow him down.

“He learned Braille and started going into schools, educating people about losing sight. He had two guide dogs in his life.

“Before then he was very keen on electronics, always fiddling with old radios, which wasn’t bad considering he was also colour blind. There wasn’t a day where he wasn’t doing anything.

We had to get him a mobile phone in the end to see where he was.”

Charlie met his wife, Olive, in his mid-20s and got married on July 14 1956 at St Mary’s Church.

He is survived by two daughters and two grandchildren, with a first greatgrandchild due in the coming months.

Speaking in the school’s auditorium, Audley, 44, said: “Preparation is the key to success,” and added, “if you tell yourself you can, you will”.

He finished the speech by referencing a piece work by the school’s head boy and girl he had seen displayed by a

classroom.

Audley, who was champion at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, read: “Yesterday was your past, so learn from it. Today is the present, so own it.

Tomorrow is your future, so write it.”

He finished off by saying loudly,

“dream big”.

A spokeswoman for the school said: “Audley had the whole year group on the edge of their seats. We are sure his positive words will resonate with the whole year group for the rest of their lives.”

DETECTIVES ARE trying to piece together what happened in the last fifteen minutes of a Peckham man’s life before he was shot and stabbed to death.

Twenty-one-year-old Ola Raji was murdered as he cycled past the Damilola Taylor Centre in East Surrey Grove, on the night of April 21, 2015.

Detectives believe Ola was confronted by two people and made a fresh appeal for evidence on the one-year anniversary of the day he was killed.

A £20,000 reward has also been readvertised, in return for information that could lead to an arrest or prosecution.

Detective Chief Inspector William Reynolds told the News: “This is an important anniversary and it’s an important day.

“What we do know is he was shot dead at 10.30pm. So we have a fifteen-minute period where I need to know where Ola was and what he was doing.

“I don’t know whether he meant to meet anyone or if anyone saw him on his bike. The most important think now is I need to know why he left his house, where he was going, and did anyone see him. Then I will be able to fully account for his movements.”

On the fateful night, Ola left his house at 10.15pm without telling his parents where he was going.

Police believe he cycled to East Surrey Grove, usually only two minutes away by bike. The two men launched their assault on Ola at 10.30pm. He was shot at three times with what was believed to be a handgun.

Two shots hit the former Sacred Heart Roman Catholic School pupil as he cycled past, one hitting him in the chest, which proved fatal. Detective Reynolds said he believes Ola fell to the ground, “tried to get up”, and then collapsed between two parked cars. His attackers then rounded on Ola by stabbing him in the back with a bladed weapon.

The detective said. “One question is: were they waiting for him? Or were they waiting for someone else; was he shot by mistake?”

Ola’s body was found by a group of young women at 10.30pm. They held his body as he lay between two parked cars until an ambulance arrived.

Reynolds added: “We have done a huge CCTV scour on a wide perimeter. There was CCTV at the entrance to East Surrey Grove, and cameras that cover another entrance. But there are a number of way to enter the estate.”

Scotland Yard arrested a 25-year-old man in September, and two more men of 24 and 21 had also been arrested, and bailed without charge. One was on suspicion of murder, the other was on conspiracy to commit murder.

“We have not recovered the weapons: the gun or the knife, but we have recovered ballistic material and believe it was a handgun,” the detective said.

“We are not at square one, we have made good progress.”

A silver car is known to have been parked nearby on Rosemary Road, with occupants who could have provided highly useful evidence. Another black BMW had also previously formed part of the investigation, but detective Reynolds said this line of enquiry has become less urgent.

Detective Reynolds said: “Having spoken to Ola’s friends we know he habitually carried a small rucksack with him when would go out. But there was no bag found with his body that night.

“I cannot say for certain that we had this bag with him when he left, or whether it was taken off him, but it would be good to know.”

New appeal after officer hurt

POLICE ARE making further appeals following two arrests in connection with an incident where a young copper was knocked down by a Land Rover.

Officers are keen to speak with anyone who saw the incident in Village Way, Dulwich, at 5.35pm on April 14.

PC Will Freeland’s leg was broken in two places after ordering the vehicle to pull over, believing it had been involved in a burglary. PC Freeland approached on foot and opened the driver's door. It then reversed at high speed, knocking PC Freeland to the ground, before smashing into parked cars.

A 36-year-old man was arrested on April 23 on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm, reckless driving and making off from the scene of an accident and burglary. Hospitals draft in consultants as junior doctors strike

JUNIOR DOCTORS in King’s College, Maudsley, and Guys’ and St Thomas’ hospitals have taken part in the first ever ‘all-out’ strikes held in the NHS’s history.

This latest 48-hour bout of industrial action – the third set of strikes by England’s junior doctors since March – also saw them walk out of A&E departments.

A&E departments at King’s and Guys’ and St Thomas’ hospitals were left to the care of consultants and nurses only, between 8am and 5pm on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The News has obtained figures from the two hospitals’ trusts showing 20 consultants were drafted in to cover junior doctors on each day at King’s A&E, while the A&E at St Thomas’ Hospital was covered by thirteen consultants.

Meanwhile there were 119 junior doctors from across the whole of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust who took part in the April 6 and 8 strike.

The strikes also meant hundreds of hospital appointments and operations needed to be rescheduled.

At Guys’ and St Thomas’ hospital, 126 operations have been postponed, equalling 37 per cent of their usual daily activity.

RESIDENTS AROUND the borough celebrated St George’s Day in style last weekend with events in primary school playgrounds and sing-alongs in pubs.

Bonamy and Bramcote Estate celebrated their 11th St George’s Day with an event organised by Pat Hickson MBE at Ilderton Road Primary School.

In the school’s playground 250 people, including councillors and Chelsea Pensioners, came to take part in face painting, raffles, snake petting and to learn how to make flower bouquets.

For a 50p entry fee party-goers were treated to a picnic bag and a free raffle ticket for the chance to win vouchers for fish and meat, as well as signed t-shirts and footballs from Millwall FC. All the money raised was donated to Bede House’s learning disability support.

At the Good Intent pub on East Street there were more vocal celebrations as revellers enjoyed Arment’s pie and mash to music.

Wendy McDonald, Good Intent’s manager, said: “We had a great celebration and a great turnout. We had Arment’s Pie and Mash down which you’ve got have.

“There was a brilliant singer too who sang all the classic cockney songs with everyone singing along and standing up for the national anthem – it’s always a patriotic day for us.

“I enjoy it more than New Year’s Eve and Day. My husband is Irish so he gets St Patrick’s Day, but he can never drink as much as me.”

THIEVES STOLE a small pop-up food company’s new van and trailer last night from a home in Nunhead.

No whisky was inside, but the crooks have made off with “50 per cent” of their entire business.

Paul, 29, said: “We parked it at my colleague Nick’s house. He said he went to bed at 1am and was up at 7am. He looked outside and it was gone. It’s totally gutting.

The solar panel project started in 2014, when Dulwich Wood School entered the national Run on Sun competition by Friends of the Earth.

The competition offered the winning school a set of solar panels worth £15,000.

As part of the competition the schools were asked to send in a piece of artwork, song or dance about why their school should go solar.

Dulwich Wood was pipped to the prize by a school in Walthamstow, but Friends of the Earth was so impressed by Dulwich Wood’s efforts that they gave £7,500 to the school in order to help them buy their own solar panels.

The remaining £7,500 was raised by members of the community, including the Friends of Dulwich Wood Federation, the school’s parents association, who helped by organising ‘Fruity Fridays’ and cake

Florence Eshalomie is a Labour councillor for Brixton Hill ward in Lambeth. She is a mother of one, who grew up in Brixton.

How can the London Assembly put pressure on the next mayor to tackle the housing crisis?

The key thing the assembly has to do is about the type of housing being built. We need the mayor to work with Southwark and Lambeth councils. Planning decisions fall on councils, but the mayor has a strategic role to play in setting the direction for what kind of housing we want, and pushing for affordable housing targets. The mayor needs to explore with councils what land can be used, and work in partnership to make make joint bids to get government funding.

What can councils and the Assembly do to get private developers to be more transparent and stick to councils’ targets for providing affordable housing?

The reality is councils in both boroughs have seen their funding cut, so you can’t expect them to build housing with no money. It will also be up to the Assembly and up to the mayor, Labour or Tory, to lobby the government to stop their cuts, and the Housing Bill [new policy feared to reduce authorities’ ability to supply social housing].

Councils also need to push harder for developers to publish viability schemes [information on what proportion of new homes developers can afford to provide as ‘affordable’]. We need to follow the approach of Southwark. They will now make developers publish what they can afford to provide if they fail to meet the 35 per cent affordable targets.

What can the mayor do to improve diversity in the

The GLA works like Southwark Council, only it covers all of London and it is responsible for city-wide planning, big infrastructure projects, housing, the Met Police and the London Fire Brigade.

Since 2010 Lambeth and Southwark have lost over 300 officers. But I think it’s about looking at community policing. I want to see the mayor look at how we can get the proceeds from crime to be invested into police forces rather than to the treasury, because it could be used to fund police officers. I have done a lot of work with the police in looking at the use of body cameras, which is something I think should be rolled out across the Met.

A lot of people are worried the Elephant and Castle ‘Bend’ has made traffic worse and more unsafe. Is it too late to do anything about it?

TfL are notorious in terms of not consulting with borough councils, so it’s a case of holding TfL to account. I want to explore making sure we get TfL officials down to walk those routes, rather than proposing from Victoria Street [location of TfL’s offices]. It’s all well and good them predicting the gyratory system will ease congestion. But if they don’t walk the route they won’t know the impact of the changes they’re making.

There are a lot of small businesses and tradesman who need the roads, but are left feeling that policies against air pollution and promoting cycling are against them.

I think it’s about respecting all road users. I’m a driver and the amount of near misses I’ve seen with cyclists and buses petrifies me. Credit to Boris, the dedicated cycle lanes being rolled out are good.

We need to look at redesigning some of our roads to ensure there’s space for everyone. We can also look at piloting restricted hours for HGVs. We can look at improving public realm and pavements.

Both Ken Livingstone and Boris Johnson have overseen this housing crisis. What would you have been saying to them about this problem if you had already been an AM?

Boris has built more, technically, affordable homes than anyone else, although not nearly enough. But the word affordable is almost meaningless now because people can’t afford them.

A phrase I have been using in this campaign is a ‘war on all fronts’. You have to increase land supply with brown field land, and building more efficiently while allowing locals to have a say, where people are not going to be forced to leave their communities.

Are the lease holders at the Aylesbury Estate who are being moved out of their homes being treated fairly?

This goes to the heart of the problem across London.

Viability assessments, and valuations on properties due to be demolished, are between councils and developers, and there’s not much transparency about how they come to their figures. People’s houses are being undervalued so they have to shell out a lot of money to remain leaseholders in new properties.

It’s precisely those people we need to get on board.

The proposal from Zac Goldsmith [Conservative mayoral candidate] is to make viability schemes and the valuation process a set procedure across London and to make them more transparent, so everyone can see what’s happening.

On a second ballot paper you also choose one of the candidates to take a seat in the London-wide assembly, who debate issues facing the whole city.

What can the mayor do to improve diversity in the police and make the force more representative if police numbers are being cut?

In terms of numbers, they have held steady at about 32,000 officers, but the numbers of special constables and community support officers has fallen. We need to reverse that trend. They are valuable with ward policing and making sure the police are visible to people.

There are problems with shutting police stations and making efficiency savings.

There are five stations in Southwark and Lambeth, and places like Dulwich are quite far away from a station.

Making the Met representative is an ongoing thing but I believe it’s naturally changing.

When I joined the specials it was a complete mix of backgrounds. There is a perception that police stop and search people from ethnic backgrounds, and the flip side of that is knife crime has gone up because people believe they won’t be stopped. You need to have stop-and-search based on police intelligence, where officers focus on specific areas and people they suspect.

A lot of people rely on their cars for their work and businesses, and they see the Elephant and Castle and think it’s a complete mess.

It is a complete mess. ‘The Bend’ they’ve put in didn’t work when they were changing it all around and they said it would improve when the two-way started flowing, and I still don’t think it has.

There is a broader point here that there isn’t enough public transport on rail and tube in the area so it forces people into cars.

TfL has a nightmare of trying to make these traffic flows work while balancing the interests of all the road users and pedestrians.

Michael Bukola, Lib Dems

What can be done about the housing crisis?

Housing is undoubtedly the main issue – the lack of it and frankly the quality of it.

Southwark has been mismanaged by the current Labour administration. What took place at the Heygate Estate with the affordable housing deal there was disgraceful.

While I was on the council I fought tooth and nail to make sure local residents would get the best deal.

I don’t think 25 per cent across the Elephant and Castle development is sufficient. It’s yet another example of this Labour administration rolling over to developers.

Elephant and Castle upsets many people. Is it too late to try and do something about the Elephant or is it now destined to be a hazard?

It’s been commented by many over the scandal of the fatalities that have been happening there.

I think a lot of money has already gone into it. I am willing to work on a cross-party basis to ensure we get the best result possible on the roundabout. I think it’s an improvement on where we were previously but there’s still work to be done.

What can the mayor do to improve diversity in the police and make the force more representative if police numbers are being cut?

Some housing associations which get funding from the GLA have been found to have reneged on promises to provide affordable housing. Should AMs and the mayor being doing more about this?

The Liberal Democrat candidate Carolyn Pidgeon is pushing for 3,000 extra police in London.

I think what we need is a multi-faceted approach both in terms of bringing in candidates with new experiences in other sectors. I am aware of the Police Now initiative which is all about bringing in young people from different sectors to try their hand at being a copper which, from speaking to officers involved, has been a really positive experience.

I have lived in Camberwell for a very long time, but I’m also clear on the benefits of having it down the Old Kent Road and seeing it become a prosperous and thriving.

On balance I think Old Kent Road is the more viable option.

One can see not just one station but two because of its destination towards Lewisham.

I think it’s incumbent on politicians and property developers to ensure we get the best deal for local people. It’s incumbent on a Labour run council to make sure property developers adhere to their own guidelines.

I hope to ensure we get proper open and transparent transactions between councils and developers.

Southwark Council’s policy of private developers needing to provide 35 per cent affordable housing is noble. However, it’s been proven, especially at Elephant and Castle, to be a complete fallacy, developers always get around it.

Look at the revolving door between Southwark Council and Lend Lease [company behind developments in Elephant and Castle] - a lot more scrutiny could be done.

The MP for Dulwich and West Norwood [Helen Hayes] is a partner of architectural firm Allies and Morrison, who have a working relationship with Lend Lease [The company is based in Southwark, although Ms Hayes’ website states she has not worked on projects in Southwark or Lambeth since 2010].

The mayor’s office has the power to ‘call in’ and have the final say on large developments. Should the mayor have more influence over affordable and social housing?

Absolutely, I’m sceptical of companies that build housing for profit. At the end of World War Two, Britain was in a far worse economic state, but we undertook a huge social-house building project. Why can’t we do it now? The money is out there.

Why can’t councils have some teeth and the will to hold developers to account?

We’re seeing swathes of south London where young men are being criminalised. We need to explore the link between school exclusions and criminality at a fundamental level.

Only yesterday I was talking to a 21-year-old who was excluded at fourteen and in jail at sixteen.

If he is then excluded from employment but living in a world where money and materialism is up in his face, the only option he sees is to go criminal to make money.

A mayor should take a lead role in having joined-up thinking.

Policing should work in conjunction with education. The mayor and any elected official has a duty to speak out, even if it’s not in their remit.

Education is not in the mayor’s remit, but he and AMs can raise the issue and get the conversation going.

Many worry about the safety of the new Elephant and Castle ‘Bend’. Is it too late for the mayor to pull some strings and do something about it?

Anything that can be done to promote cycling should be supported, because we have air pollution causing over 9,000 people in London to die per year [King’s College London research].

The average speed in London now is 10mph, which is like when we had horses and carts. If it’s important for someone to have a 300-horse-power box chugging out pollution while going seven-mph, then I can’t help them.

The cycling revolution that has happened across London is really down to us having two Green AMs who put pressure on the mayor to make sure they got London’s transport system more cycling friendly.

Why vote for him?

The London Assembly plays a crucial role in services like TfL and policing. Assembly members are key to making travelling into work cheaper. If people want to see more front-line policing then they need to vote for someone who can stand up for them.

On housing and planning:

If we had a UKIP mayor we would make sure people have referendums to decide on planning issues. A referendum could be triggered if five per cent of a people in a catchment area call for one.

When you hear about house prices there’s always two sides to it: supply and demand. We should have a list of all the available brown field sites for developers to use.

We have also got to look at demand. With second homes we should have penalties where we double council tax for homes left empty.

On improving the police force:

We need the police force to be a meritocracy. We need to recruit the brightest and best, irrespective of their background, so I don’t support quotas for hiring ethnic minority officers.

On transport:

The Elephant and Castle is a work in progress so let’s wait until everything is complete and see what happens to the traffic flow. If it doesn’t get better we will have a reason to discuss.

ROTHERHITHE: Trading will continue “as usual” after retail giant BHS filed for administration on Monday prompting fears for 11,000 jobs across 164 stores nationwide.

Responding to fears that there will be job losses at the Surrey Quays Shopping Centre outlet, administrators Duff and Phelps said they did not have “regional breakdowns or further information on specific stores”.

A Duff and Phelps spokesperson said: “The Group has been undergoing restructuring and, as has been widely reported, the shareholders have been in negotiations to find a buyer for the business.

“These negotiations have been unsuccessful. In addition property sales have not materialised as expected in both number and value.

“Consequently, as a result of a lower than expected cash balance, the Group is very unlikely to meet all contractual payments.

“The Directors therefore have no alternative but to put the Group into administration to protect it for all creditors.

“The Group will continue to trade as usual whilst the administrators seek to sell it as a going concern.”

BHS was sold by retail magnate Sir Philip Green last year for £1 with £1.3bn of debt after buying it for £200m in 2000.

Collision between car and motorbike

PECKHAM: Police have confirmed a collision took place between a motorcycle and a car outside Harris Academy in Peckham Road on Monday morning.

Officers were called by London Ambulance Service at 9.46am to Peckham Road.

A spokeswoman for the Met has confirmed the two vehicles collided outside the school, but the driver’s and rider’s injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

Temporary road closures were put in place going westbound on both Peckham Road and Lyndhurst Way.

‘Parking rules will draw red line under our business’

62-year-old car firm says parking restrictions will lose customers

A 62-YEAR-old family business has accused Transport for London of endangering their livelihoods with plans to put double red lines outside their car shop.

Kent Carriage Company on Pomeroy Street are concerned that the lines will

put them out of business because it would prevent customers dropping in.

TfL previously put double red lines outside the company in 2013 only to be taken to the High Court as there had been no consultation.

Paul Houston, Kent Carriage Company’s owner, had to fork out £10,000 before TfL signed a consent form admitting they didn’t hold a consultation.

The lines remained till 2014, however, forcing Mr Houston to burn the lines off himself. He also said he had to let two staff go because the lines caused him to lose business. TfL are said to have come back in 2015 early in the morning to reapply them only for Mr Houston to burn them off again.

Now TfL’s most recent plans to hold a consultation on the project has been met with fierce opposition, including a petition being signed more than 613 times. Mr Houston said: "We've seen all of the recessions, Black Wednesday, the blackouts of the ‘70s and all different sorts of crisis. Won't it be such an irony that TfL is the final nail in the coffin?

“Common sense must override bureaucracy. Openness and transparency are meant to be important in a

democracy but if they've already decided the outcome of the consultation then it is rigged.

“We are part of the community and its history and we only sell to local people.

We've become a landmark and we won't go quietly."

TfL have responded to Mr Houston’s claims saying that the red lines are for safety reasons, making the junction operate better and to reduce the conflict between larger vehicles trying to pass.

Nigel Hardy, Head of Sponsorship and Surface Transport at TfL, said: "No decision has been made on proposed changes at this junction.

“We've been engaging with Kent Carriage Company for some time and we will hold a consultation into proposed safety improvements later this year."

PUPILS FROM Nunhead’s Ivydale primary have put pen to paper to send the News a postbag-busting load of letters arguing why we should or shouldn’t have zoos.

The Year 4 pupils were told to write letters to try and persuade readers to consider the impact of zoos on both animals and the public.

The project was given to them by teacher Ms Ruth Fairclough, who told the News: “Persuasive writing is an important skill to learn and it will help them when they get older.

“When we started the persuasive writing project we first debated on certain topics that the children all had opinions on.”

The topic of potential zoo closures and animals was chosen by the class.

The News got talking to a few of the children. Barnaby Benfield, nine, stood firmly to his argument for zoos to be kept open, which didn’t seem so surprising after he mentioned that he loved watching animal shows by David Attenborough. When asked which animal is his favourite, Barnaby replied: “I pick my favourite animal based on their hunting strategies.”

Castle to open doors this weekend

THE LONG-awaited Elephant and Castle leisure centre will open to the public on Saturday, April 30, Southwark Council has announced.

Among its features are a 25 metre sixlane swimming pool, a learner pool, sauna and steam rooms, a sports hall, fully-equipped gym, two exercise studios and a crèche and café. There is also disabled access and specialist equipment throughout.

The £20m Castle Centre will open its doors at 7am with an official open day weekend scheduled for May 21 and 22.

It was originally due to open in the summer of 2014, after construction began in February 2013.

The project was first delayed after an

excavation of the site where the old leisure centre once stood found a mass grave of 500 medieval skeletons in October 2012.

In January this year, councillor Barrie Hargrove, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for public health, parks and leisure, said the delay was due to shortages of skilled workers from high demand for development projects across London. Cllr Hargrove recently said: “I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has been working so hard to get the Castle Centre open, despite its building stage delays.

“I have seen a fantastic turn-around over the last few weeks as we get the centre ready for the public and I’m looking forward to finally getting the doors open on April 30, so everyone can try out the facilities for themselves.”

SOUTHWARK'S RUNNERS raised thousands on Sunday, April 24, as they were among 40,000 people in the 2016 London marathon.

Bermondsey runner Kevin Downey completed his 27th marathon, smashing his £2,500 fundraising target for the News’ Evelina Children’s Hospital appeal by more than £300.

Kevin said: “Normally you get a few gaps in the crowd but this year there weren’t and they were cheering us all on for the whole thing, which was great. I raised £2,898.06, but there is more to come.

“I want to say thank you to everyone who supported me from the bottom of my heart. Especially Pat from the Blue Anchor for holding charity nights for me and a great after party.

“This was my 27th marathon and I want to do three more before I turn 60.

Then I’m hanging up my boots.”

Bermondsey born and bred Paul Roberts was one of twelve runners from the ITV Sports London Marathon Team running for the NSPCC to improve the ChildLine Services.

The 42-year-old TV Producer said: “We have so far raised almost £17,000.

Despite a toe injury on Tower Bridge, Paul soldiered on and managed to finish the course in a time of 5 hours 40 minutes and 38 seconds. He said: “The people of Bermondsey again proved that they are the best at support on the marathon route.”

East Dulwich professional, Tony Mok, ran the Marathon in honour of his mum, who is living with Multiple Sclerosis.

He said: “The day went very well indeed. I managed to complete the marathon in 4h 17m, which is my personal best.”

He said: “Donations on my just giving page went through the roof in the run up to the race. I am currently on £1,146.65, which far surpasses my second target.”

Dominic Cain, Assistant Director Revenues and Benefits Southwark Council, ran his first marathon on Sunday in memory of two work

colleagues and friends, in 3 hours 31 minutes 53 seconds.

The 44-year-old has so far raised £7,461 for Bowel Cancer UK in honour Calvin Tigere & Mike who were lost to the disease in a short space of time in 2014. Both had worked at Southwark in Revenues and Benefits and their loss had a profound impact on many of people.

Emma D’Arcey, 40, from Bermondsey finally fulfilled her dream of running the London Marathon after trying to get a place in the ballot for twelve years.

The textile designer was aiming to raise £1,500 for a charity in Kolkata, India which provides a home for life for disabled children and young adults who have no family and have been abandoned on the streets of Kolkata, India but she ended up raising double her target amount.

She said: “£3001.43. I couldn’t believe it and it’s going to such an incredible cause. David Earp the founder is a very special person and the team that work at shuktara are equally brilliant.”

Help officer find lost wedding ring A SOUTHWARK copper lost his wedding ring while on duty during the Marathon, a month before his 10th anniversary.

Simon Smith has been served the borough for fourteen years and lost the platinum ring from Tiffany and Co while cycling along the route.

He only noticed the ring was gone when he took his gloves off near the end of the day near the McDonald’s on Evelyn Street, Deptford.

Emma-Jane Smith, Simon’s wife, said: “He thinks he lost it before the marathon started at around 9:30am. He was taking off his cycling gloves at the final location and then noticed it was gone.

“We bought the ring in New York before we got married. It was very romantic. We kept them till we got married 18 months later. It will be our 10 year anniversary on May 20.

“He never takes it off. He was devastated. I could tell by his voice that he was upset. With the amount of people around there wasn’t much hope of finding it. He tried to and even went through a bin.”

Emma-Jane and Simon live in Kent with their three children, a daughter aged seven, and sons aged two and one.

If you do not have an open mind then stay away, but for the adventurous among us who want to be informed, enlightened and entertained I recommend you go and have a look.

The entrance fee also gives you access to Tate Britain’s wonderful collection of artworks, so after the Conceptual Art we strolled through the galleries looking at some now-famous modern work. At Tracey Emin’s My Bed, my art guru looked at this nightmare vision of empty booze bottles, fag butts, stained sheets and worn underwear, and said: ‘My son Freddy can do this.’

Paul Maheke: I Lost Track Of The

Usually it is an anxiety built up from worrying if the production is going to be any good and you have wasted an evening not enjoying yourself, but for Funny Girl the question on everyone’s mind was ‘How good is this going to be?’ The press had seen it all before when Sheridan Smith brought Fanny Brice to life in a triumphant run at the Menier Chocolate Factory, so this was the most eagerly awaited West End transfer for many a year.

And Ms Smith did not disappoint.

She never does. The awards and praise being draped over her for the body of work she has produced are all warranted. Here at the Savoy Theatre she got a cheer merely for walking on!

Funny Girl is an Ugly Duckling story; a rags to riches tale, but one that is true. It could even be seen as the story of Sheridan Smith and her meteoric rise to fame that has seen her, over the years, produce great work on stage and screen, and clock up her impressive number of prestigious awards.

Fanny Brice was told that she would not amount to anything from an early age, but her attitude, persona and propensity to make people laugh got her to the very top of her trade, appearing for many years as the star of the famous Zeigfeld Follies.

Funny Fanny is no Folly

The Future is Orange

In the 1960s artists once again began to abandon traditional approaches to art and sculpture and made the idea the main thrust of the work. Tate’s ‘Conceptual Art in Britain 1964–1979’ exhibition explores this pivotal period in British history, which changed the way we think about art to this day. As with anything that differs from the ‘norm’, modern, abstract or conceptual art has its lovers and its haters, and this show will extract both commendation and condemnation in equal amounts.

I went with someone who has an open mind to all art, who knows what he likes and tells it like it is. On entering, the first work is Roelof Louw’s Soul City, a tetrahedron of oranges. As I found myself mesmerised by the work that had gone into putting this together my companion whispered: ‘Because he did it and called it Soul City, it’s art. If I did it I’d be a greengrocer.’ Not one to argue with logic I conceded. This art lover then proceeded to nick an orange, get me to photograph him sitting next to it in front of a Bridget Riley piece that he did admire, and told me we had now created art. I had to agree.

whose cash flow has some serious ups and downs throughout his life, but not enough to stop Fanny falling in love and marrying him. And because this is a true story there is no obvious, predictable ending, so I, being programmed to the usual trajectory of musicals, was wrongfooted several times.

WWW.LEONRESTAURANTS.CO.UK YEH, YEH, I’m one of those who makes all the New Year resolutions and gives them up by the second week in January, but this time I’m really committed to getting my waist size back to a sensible 50 inches before Christmas Pudding comes round again, and April is the month for me to get on the health-conscious mindfulness vibe that is taking over the developed world, writes Michael Holland...

So, I began my new regime with a 5mile history-mystery walk around the City with healthy-eating fanatic Nina

The Ballerina (who counts the calories in fresh air) alongside me to ensure I did not cheat by jumping on a bus to get from one mystery to the next. The whole thing conveniently ended near Southwark Bridge where we followed up our perambulation in Leon, a superfood, super-healthy, fast food establishment that is on its way to transforming how we eat in the busy 21st century living of today.

There is no time for crockery and metal cutlery here; the food comes in recycled, biodegradable boxes with plastic knives and forks that can de dispensed with responsibly. You order quickly from an overhead menu and it comes to you fast so you can get back out into the trendy Bankside surroundings to eat alfresco, or back to the office to dine al-desko while you work through your lunch hour. In Leon, time is not for wasting but the food is definitely for tasting.

Talking to the nutritionist who was involved in the creation of the Leon menu I was reliably informed that I would feel better, be better, look

younger and live longer from ingesting the foods used in the meals here. She looked good on it so I was hooked. ‘I’ll have what she’s had,’ I cried. And before I had time to do a couple of laps of the table our selections arrived: Chargrilled Chicken Pot, Fries, Hummus; Sweet Potato Falafel; Morrocan Meatballs; Superfood Salad and a Clean Green Shake! Yowzah! I feel better already.

The chicken involved tender chunks of subtly marinated breast, and the meatballs were light and fluffy while also being meaty, which was rather miraculous, and the sauce, rice and salad they came with fitted perfectly with the balls and the Leon ethos.

The Fries were like no other I’d ever had and dunked nicely in the mayo and barbecue sauce dips, while the Superfood Salad made up of avocado, cucumber, mint, peas, broccoli, feta and quinoa (Don’t forget it’s pronounced keeeeeenwah, Darling’) seemed to give me a legal high! The Ballerina thought that a Pumpkin Seed topping would have added

protein and essential oils to that dish while slowing down the energyrelease process, but I was too busy thinking about how many goals Spurs had scored against United to be listening with any real enthusiasm.

Between mouthfuls of this healthy and high living food a good guzzle of the Clean Green Shake washed away any dreams of the deep-fried Mars Bars I’ve been addicted to these past months and filled me with a new zeal for a hale and hearty life.

Towards the end we both found ourselves quite full, but not that kind of full where you need to loosen the belt and lay down, but one where you want to skip outside to be beneath a blue sky and be at one with nature as the slow-release energy foods worked their magic.

Leon could and should be the future.

Organic, healthy, well-sourced food is what is trending right now and we all need to be thinking that way. After we had lunched at Leon I felt like running all the way home but my car was parked round the corner...

South London’s expanding property market S

ebastian Kalmar, director of KALMARs’ residential, discusses the expanding south London property market and KALMARs’ ambition to lead this market:

After 20 years in The City/West End KALMARs moved to South London in 1986, where they have dedicated themselves to gaining an exceptional understanding of the area. With the building of The Shard and other significant investment projects in recent years along with whispers of a south Bakerloo line extension and other travel improvements – thorough local knowledge is becoming even more crucial to clients looking to navigate the increasingly complex market.

“When we started working in south London some of the largest developments were warehouse conversions in Shad Thames or industrial units but now our clients, including Berkeley Homes, have put together some of the largest development projects in London and

in fact Europe, from the Elephant and Castle regeneration to the Canada Water Masterplan.”

in South London – we are fully committed to the area,” adds Sebastian, and with staff spending on average 8 years with the company, it seems the team feel the same way.

As well as high expectations for service, Sebastian suggests that a rising list of demands is becoming more common. “Over recent years specifications have greatly improved, with developments we are handling now featuring very high-end components like iPad controls, German Poggenpohl

kitchens, designer Tom Dixon lighting and Villeroy & Boch bathrooms.” And KALMARs has every intention of meeting each and every client’s expectations. “We want to be easily accessible within the areas we know and love so our plan is to open five offices across south London. The first part of this expansion is already underway with our team working to open a residential office in Bermondsey later this year.” It may be an ambitious expansion plan but it is one which demonstrates the

agency’s belief in the prosperity of the area in a concrete way, and one which may see the south London property market having trouble keeping up with KALMARs.

TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that to enable Sewer works by Cappagh and Water works by Agility Alliance to be carried out, made an order the effect of which would be to prohibit vehicular traffic from entering part of the above named roads.

Whilst works are in progress, and whilst the authorised traffic signs are displayed, no person shall cause any vehicle to enter, proceed, stop, wait, load or unload in (a) St Aidans Road, outside No’s 9 (sewer works) (b) Talbot Yard, No’s 1 (water works)

The alternative route for (a) Forest Hill Road, Dunstans Road, Underhill Road. Peckham Rye, Barry Road, Underhill Road. (c) No alternative route required, or as indicated by the traffic signs displayed.

Exemptions will be provided in the Order to permit reasonable access to premises, so far as it is practical without interference with the execution of the said works.

The restrictions will not apply to any vehicle being used in connection with the said works, or for fire brigade, ambulance or police purposes or anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform.

The works will take place for (a) 3rd – 16th May. (b) 16th – 20th May.

Transport for London hereby gives notice that it has made the above named Traffic Order under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 for the purpose specified in paragraph 2. The effect of the Order is summarised in paragraph 3.

2. The purpose of the Order is to enable construction works to take place on A3 Borough High Street.

3. The effect of the Order will be to prohibit any vehicle except vehicles involved in the redevelopment of Nos.160-166 Borough High Street (Lyon House) from stopping on Borough High Street northwest side from a point 4 metres south of the extended common boundary of No.168 and Nos.160-166 Borough High Street to a point 15 metres northwards.

Transport for London Public Notice ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984

THE A200 GLA ROAD (CRUCIFIX LANE, LONDON BOROUGH OF SOUTHWARK) (TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC AND STOPPING) ORDER 2016 1. Transport for London hereby gives notice that it intends to make the above named Traffic Order under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 for the purpose specified in paragraph 2. The effect of the Order is summarised in paragraph 3.

2. The purpose of the Order is to enable BT works to take place on A200 Crucifix Lane.

3. The effect of the Order will be to prohibit any vehicle from:

a) entering, exiting or proceeding on Crucifix Lane between Bermondsey Street and Shand Street; b) stopping on Crucifix Lane between Bermondsey Street and Barnham Street;

c) entering, exiting or proceeding on Druid Street between Tower Bridge Road and Crucifix Lane (local access will be maintained).

This Order will also:

a) suspend the one-way operation on Crucifix Lane between Shand Street and Barnham Street, allowing two-way operation

b) suspend the prescribed right turn from Shand Street into Crucifix Lane, allowing vehicles to turn left.

The Order will be effective between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM on the 15th May 2016 or until the works has been completed. The prohibition will apply only during such times and to such extent as shall from time to time be indicated by traffic signs.

4. The prohibitions will not apply in respect of:

(1) any vehicle being used for the purposes of those works or for fire brigade, ambulance or police purposes;

DULWICH HAMLET lost their final league game of the season at Needham Market on Saturday but due to results elsewhere they will take part in the post season play offs.

The Pink and Blues lost to 2-1 in Suffolk, points that meant Market avoided relegation, but as Enfield Town only drew 0-0 with League champion Hampton and Richmond Borough Dulwich scraped into the play off mix.

A brace of goals from Luke Ingram was enough for Needham to nab three points on Saturday, with Dipo Akinyemi bagging his fifth goal in as many appearances in response for Dulwich.

The Champion Hill side will now take part in the play off mix for the fourth time in the last six seasons, although they have never been promoted through them.

Tonight Dulwich will travel to Bognor Regis Town for a one legged semi-final play off clash, with the winner going through to a final on Bank Holiday Monday.

Hamlet have done the league double over the Sussex side this season although Bognor have won their last six games on the bounce, a run that took them to within a point of the league title.

This clash will be the third time the pair have contested a play off game.

Dulwich won the first encounter in 2011, a Ryman League South play off semi-final game, before Bognor prevailed 1-0 in the same league’s play off final twelve months later.

MILLWALL GOT a run of three games in six days underway with a 1-1 draw away at Yeovil Town Ladies on Sunday.

The Lionesses took the lead three minutes before the break when Leighanne Robe’s long free kick into the box was met by Fliss Gibbons who looped a header over Charlotte Haynes to open her account for the season.

A vocal and passionate home crowd pushed their side on and after 74 minutes Helen Bleazard won the ball near the corner flag and rolled a cross in to Sarah Wiltshire who smashed into the top corner to level things up.

Lionesses Manager Rebecca Sawiuk said: “Our whole commitment, passion and desire was worthy of the three points.

“We felt hard done by but I’m sure Jamie [Sherwood – Yeovil manager] will say the same.”

Yeovil will play the Lionesses again this Saturday as part of a unique doubleheader with the Millwall men’s team.

The Lionesses will play after the men’s game against Oldham and entry will be free for those who stay behind.

Billy Shinners bagged two weekend goals

STANSFELD REMAIN in second place in the Kent County Premier Division after another solid performance away at Kent Invicta League bound Snodland Town on Saturday.

The Bermondsey side prevailed 2-0 on the day with the deadlock being finally broken on 74 minutes when Billy Shinners beat the Snodland offside trap and broke into the box before calmly slotting the ball past the keeper into the bottom left hand corner of the net.

five minutes from time when Shinners doubled his and Stansfeld's total with a sharp finish from the edge of the six yard box, after a terrific run and cross from Billy Jolley.

PECKHAM BOXER Johnny Garton will get his long awaited title shot next month when he fights Ryan Fields at York Hall, Bethnal Green.

Garton won a final eliminator for the English welterweight crown before Christmas but has had to wait to get his shot at a national title.

MILLWALL NEED just a point at home to Oldham Athletic this Saturday to confirm their place in the 2015-16 League One playoffs.

The Lions are also still not out of contention for automatic promotion: Should they defeat the Latics at The Den, and second-placed Burton lose at home to Gillingham, then that race will go down to the final day of the season on May 8.

Walsall can still also finish in the top two.

The Latics had won just three league games all season and were five points adrift of safety after Lee Gregory and Steve Morison scored either side of Mike Jones’ equaliser.

THE DEN is set to be the venue for the Premier League International Cup final between PSV Eindhoven and Villarreal on Wednesday, May 4.

CHRIS TAYLOR provided the luck, and then the quality, to ensure Millwall need just one point from their two remaining league games to secure their place in the playoffs.

A win at home to Taylor’s former club Oldham this weekend will mean Burton must get a result against Gillingham to guarantee automatic promotion.

But the Lions are still in the hunt and in the form to pounce on any slip-up Burton may make, even if that remains unlikely.

So a third play-off campaign in seven years beckons. If Neil Harris’ side get a positive result this weekend they can start making plans for mid-May when the race for the Championship will become a knockout competition.

And perhaps, with that in mind, Millwall will be better off to forget about their recent history in the knockout format. League Two Wycombe and Barnet triumphed on dreary evenings at The Den this season, but there is a darker spectre from their recent past that Lions fans will be hoping they can avoid until at least a potential final at Wembley.

Bradford defeated Millwall 4-0 in an FA Cup replay last season. In October, Tony Craig picked up a serious knee injury against Phil Parkinson’s side that kept him out for almost six months, and then the Bantams won 1-0 at Valley Parade in a bruising contest in March. They are big and awkward and best avoided for as long as possible. But that’s for another day and they have also yet to confirm their place in the top six.

In fact, Port Vale in eleventh still have an outside chance at achieving that.

Bury were an unpredictable opponent on Saturday. They’d secured their League One status a week before so could play with expression and without fear, and Harris said his players had to adjust to that environment.

“I thought Bury would play with some freedom, and they played really openly,” Harris said. “At times they were leaving four up the field when we were taking throw-ins. Obviously, you’re not used to that, we’ve not seen that this season.

“So it was a great learning curve for my players, we had react in our positional play and we spoke about that at half-time. We were much better in the second half at it.”

This win boosted an already impressive goal difference that stood at minus six after the first five league games of the season.

It’s now plus 20 and could be decisive if it comes into calculations for second place or sixth in the final standings.

Midfielder’s double and Morison strike puts Lions on brink of play-offs

Bar before the beginning of the season, when one of the fascinations was around how the team would play, one generously refreshed individual suggested to Harris that Steve Morison had been brought in for the purpose of getting his head on the incessant number of long balls that would rain down on the opponent’s box.

In the 33rd minute at Gigg Lane on Saturday, Millwall demonstrated their more subtle attacking abilities when Taylor spotted the run of Morison over his shoulder, back-heeled the ball

between two Bury defenders, and his captain planted a shot into the far corner for his eighteenth goal of the season.

They were already a goal up after Taylor’s corner had gone directly over the head of Bury goalkeeper Chris Neal and into the far corner of the net in the fourth minute.

Not that the contest was a thing of beauty and Shakers boss David Flitcroft lamented afterwards he wished his side were able to “win ugly” like their opponents.

the play-offs when Ryan Lowe smashed in off the bar in added time at the end of the first half.

But the Lions were professional after the break, and it was another intelligent combination between Morison and Taylor that sealed the points, the on-loan Blackburn player driving home his third goal in eight games from Morison’s cross in the 83rd minute.

Millwall are into the home stretch, and the last home game of the season this weekend will go some way to signposting the twist and turns still to come.

Young attacker was a talented athlete but football was first EXCLUSIVE

AS A youngster in school, Fred Onyedinma was encouraged by his PE teacher not to dismiss other athletic pursuits in case a career in football didn’t materialise.

Onyedinma could run the 100 metres in just over eleven seconds when he was in year ten, but running past defenders was all he could think about.

So he ignored his teacher’s advice.

But he absorbed other lessons more readily and naturally and he is now in a position to go back to Corelli College – formerly Kidbrooke School – in Greenwich to pass on what he has learned.

Onyedinma explains: “I never used to listen to my PE teacher when he used to say, ‘If you don’t go further with football you should think about taking up athletics’. I was good at the 100 metres and triple jump. But I never used to pay attention to that because I just wanted to be a footballer.

“He always used to keep at it with me. He always used to tell me when I was playing for the school team that you can have all the talent but you need to listen a lot, take things on

board. That’s what separates the good players from the best players. They listen and they apply it to their game.

“You always have to work hard and if you have talent then that hard work will take you far.

“He comes to the games sometimes.

If he wants to talk to me after a game we’ll go for a coffee and he still advises me.

“Sometimes he asks me to come down to the school just to speak to the younger kids. I was in that situation where you want to be a footballer but you never know how it’s going to work out in the future. I would always try and do my best to help someone.

“I enjoyed school and I think I was alright at it, but it was mostly all football for me.”

After a storming start to this season when he got an assist on the opening day at Shrewsbury and then scored twice in the 3-2 defeat to Barnsley little over a week later, Onyedinma has found himself out of the first team for spells this campaign.

The return from injury of Aiden O’Brien and subsequent arrivals and then successes of first Jed Wallace and then Chris Taylor meant game time was limited.

But even if he wasn’t as visible in the first team as he was earlier in the season he was an important member

of Justin Skinner’s U21 side as they competed at the top end of their division.

The irony of his second full campaign as a professional is that when Millwall were at their most ragged, Onyedinma was at his most exciting. As Neil Harris’ side has evolved into a tighter, more disciplined unit the more free-spirited Onyedinma has had to adapt aspects of his game and be aware of the specific individual requirements in the team collective.

“It’s frustrating when you’re not in the team but you have to get your head down,” Onyedinma said. “That’s what football is about, fighting for your place.

“You just learn that every season.

You’re just waiting for your opportunity. If the team are winning you might be coming on to help see the game out, so it’s a different approach. If we’re winning 1-0 and I come on I’m not going to try to attack, it’s about keeping the lead.

“For a young player it’s more about trying to be consistent. At the beginning of the season I was more consistent. It’s easy to say as a young player you play a game and you’re not feeling it. I think I can still improve on that. One thing is that in my position you can get tired and fatigued but it’s

about maintaining that fitness for the whole season.

“It’s also not like your modern-day system in a 4-3-3 where you’re playing as an attacker. In this team you have to do both sides of the job of a midfielder.”

Onyedinma was back in the starting XI for the first time in a month against Bury last weekend as Millwall moved closer to confirming a top-six finish.

That was just his second start in 2016 and even though he could end up playing a significant part at the end of the season, he is always keen to shift the focus back to the collective.

“I was delighted that I was back and what I try to do is always work hard to get back into the team,” Onyedinma said. “But it’s not about me. It’s all about where we are at the moment.

“The manager always tells us to be positive. Obviously we want to play with freedom but he tells us to stick to the basics as well.”

Those basics have taken the side far this season and they are the principles that Harris is hoping will help take Millwall back to the Championship at the first attempt.

Onyedinma’s old school’s motto is, ‘Learning together, enjoying success’.

It could end up being an apt description of his and Millwall’s season.

THE FOOTBALL League have confirmed the provisional 201516 League One play-off dates.

Millwall need just one more point from their final two fixtures to book their place for a shot at a return to the Championship via Wembley.

The side that finishes third after the final round of fixtures on May 8 will play the side that finishes sixth.

Fourth will play fifth.

The Lions could potentially still finish in any of the five positions behind leaders Wigan with two games left.

Meanwhile, Gillingham, Scunthorpe, Sheffield United, Rochdale and Port Vale all still have a chance to finish in the top six.

Should Millwall lose their final two league games and other results go against them, they would miss out on the play-offs altogether, though that is an unlikely scenario.
