Why won’t Trust chiefs set out where they stand on contracts?

T

HE NATIONAL debate over junior doctors’ contracts is keenly felt in Southwark with our three major hospitals employing thousands of medical staff. So it is disappointing that neither of the Chief Executives from Guy’s & St Thomas’ and King’s would agree to an interview with this paper.

Not only the junior doctors themselves, but all those who use these flagship hospital trusts, will wonder what those who run the organisations think about the government’s decision to impose new contracts. Do they support the government - which argues that change is needed in the drive to fulfil an election pledge to provide a seven day a week NHS? Or do they support many of their staff who believe they will be overworked and that the new working conditions will affect their ability to care for people?

We asked, repeatedly, whether either Chief Exec would agree to an interview, to set out their views on this thorny issue, but received only bland, short statements from the trusts, stating that they were following national developments.

Both of these huge hospital trusts are leaders in the field - achieving incredible things each year, treating and helping thousands of local people. So surely it’s not unreasonable for us to expect them to take a lead on an issue that affects so many people - rather than simply follow national events from the sidelines?

by Fullers perhaps!

It is astonishing that this national brewery is so hell-bent on stopping live music at the Half Moon pub when it reopens.

The large pub that is a landmark for the Herne Hill area has an impressive history of top names playing on the stage there. And so has a notable celebrity fan base. More importantly for any publican, the pub as a live music venue is clearly popular with the local community. Why on earth Fullers cannot see this and is sticking to some rigid business model would astound any local landlady or landlord.

Hundreds came out in the rain at last week’s pop-up musical protest and many more since Fullers said they would be doing away with the pub’s famous stage.

Fullers accountants have obviously opted for food over drink and live music, but who says they can’t have both?

Surely they need to listen to their customers – who are currently amassing on the street outside the pub.

‘TRYING TO KEEP SPIRITS HIGH BUT I FEAR THE WORST’

Poignant wartime telegram messages appear pasted to arches

AN UNOFFICIAL ‘war memorial’ has intrigued Bermondsey residents since it emerged without warning or explanation last week.

The instalment, at the arches in the junction of Tanner Street and Maltby Street, features what appear to be reproductions of WW2-era telegrams sent from residents in the north of the borough.

The poignant messages reveal both the drama and minutiae of wartime life in Bermondsey, as well as the tragedy, grief and strength that permeated the borough during the

Blitz.

One reads: “Come home immediately Edward died.”

Another says: “Bombing last night stop the dog died but we are all safe and thinking of you stop.”

Some informed residents of the deaths of their sons or fathers, while others relayed the destination of loved ones during the evacuation of children to the countryside.

One simple reads: “Trying to keep spirits high but I fear the worst.”

Southwark historian Stephen Bourne was mystified by the telegrams, which are unaccompanied by any sort of informative plaque or protective cover.

He told the News: “It is an odd one.

It looks quite prominent and eyecatching display, obviously somebody wants people to look at them. But they look too clean to be originals – and if original, surely they wouldn’t just display them on a wall.

“It is interesting but it is also a big mystery. It would be good if someone reading this could explain why they were put up.”

Grieving Bermondsey man pays tribute to lover who died just weeks after wedding was put on hold because of his Alzheimer’s

AN ELDERLY man who suffered from Alzheimer’s has been paid a loving tribute by the long-term lover and companion, who has died only weeks after their wedding was put on hold.

David Newman, 80, died on Saturday at the Tower Bridge Care Home following a urinary infection and a damaged bowel, but had also suffered from Parkinson’s disease.

Mr Newman was visited at the care home ever day by Keith Buxton, 69, who had lived together in Jamaica Road, Bermondsey, since 1988.

Keith had proposed to Mr Newman on Valentine’s Day, and had almost married on Tuesday, February 23 in Mr Newman’s room at the care home. Mr Newman had been in better health that day. “He was speaking in full sentences and seeming well,” Keith says.

“I told the registrar David was doing well, so the registrar said ‘right let’s do it’, and dropped everything to come and marry us.

“The staff at the care home got him fresh clothes and shaved him especially to make him look nice.

“We were all in his room, then half way through the ceremony we heard a knock on the door.”

The ceremony was interrupted by the care home’s managerial staff, who insisted the wedding be put on hold until they could say for certain Mr Newman was “aware of what he was agreeing to”.

“They said David first needed to be checked by social services, but they couldn’t come until the next day. By

then David’s condition had again taken a turn for the worse again, and his speech was very limited.”

Tragically, the wedding had to be called off and his condition continued to deteriorate.

“David had proposed to me in 2013, just after gay marriage became legal,” Keith said. “But I told him I didn’t see the point.

“When I proposed to him on Valentine’s Day his face lit up and he cried. I just wish I had realised it had been so important to him all along. I feel like I have been so selfish.

“I know he really did want to marry me. He just never mentioned it again because he was content with what I wanted.”

Car park plans go to new level

NEW DETAILS of how Peckham multi-storey car park is to be transformed have been revealed.

Peckham Town Centre Car Park will soon be known as Peckham Levels, with 20,000 square foot of space designed by the creators of Pop-Up Brixton.

The designs pictured show the six-levels of space. Levels one, two, three and four will comprise artist’s studios, maker workshops and shared workspace for businesses. Levels five and six will provide gallery, performance and multipurpose events space, and retail space.

Mr Newman was born in Huddersfield and served in the RAF after World War Two, later becoming a Salvation Army captain. Keith was raised in Doncaster and moved to London for work, later convincing

David to follow after being made redundant from his old factory job.

The couple enjoyed going to their favourite haunts, the Tower Bridge Road Whetherspoons and the Chelsea Kitchen in west London, which they often visited after a trip to see Chicago or Star Light Express at the theatre.

Mr Newman was a “gentle soul” who would go to the shop across the road and bring back copies of the Metro to put through everyone’s front door in their block of flats.

Keith said he would like to scatter Mr Newsman’s ashes in Southwark Park where he loved to feed birds and squirrels during summer.

Mr Newman died having had no children, and with no living siblings.

His funeral will be held on Wednesday March 23, at 10.45am at Honour Oak Cemetery. His body will be taken to the funeral service from their Jamaica Road flat in Wickfield House at 10.15am “for anyone who wants to say goodbye to him there”.

BBC to screen drama on Damilola Taylor killing

A TV drama about the tragic killing of ten-year-old Damilola Taylor is set to be made for BBC One.

The one-off programme, which will be called Our Loved Boy, will be told through the perspective of Damilola’s father, Richard Taylor.

The episode will re-tell the events which led to his son’s killing in 2000, when he was found bleeding to death

in the stairwell of a Peckham housing estate.

Two brothers were cleared of murder but later convicted of manslaughter, having stabbed Damilola in the leg with glass.

The programme has been written by playwright and screen-writer Levi David Addai. Bafta-winning director Euros Lynn, best known for Capital and Happy Valley, will also help with the script.

A date for the episode’s broadcast has yet to be confirmed.

Officer accidentally fires weapon at scene

POLICE DISCOVERED and accidentally fired a handgun last week following a three-vehicle crash in the Old Kent Road.

A moped driver, who had been in collision with a car and a coach, fled the scene and is currently being hunted by police.

The accident took place at around 5.30pm near the junction with Dunton Road.

The driver of the coach, which had no passengers on board, stopped at the scene and was uninjured. The car driver had left the scene on foot, but returned and was also uninjured.

Police arrived at the scene and discovered the weapon, which one

officer then accidentally fired at the scene.

A spokesperson for Scotland Yard said: “The recovered firearm was unintentionally discharged into a ballistics bag by a Scene of Crime Officer. No one was injured.”

She added that the Directorate of Professional Standards, who “uphold and improve” standards across the capital’s police force, has been informed.

No arrests have been made and police are asking for witnesses to come forward.

Enquiries into where the gun came from are ongoing.

Man saved from cooking fire

BERMONDSEY: A man was rescued from a flat fire last week after cooking was left unattended.

A neighbour, who smelled burning in a seven-storey block of flats in Lockwood Square, called the emergency services at around 9.47pm.

Three fire engines and 14 firefighters attended the scene and “forced their way” in to save the man, who was suffering from smoke inhalation.

but was brought under control by just after 11.20pm. A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “This man is very lucky to have an attentive neighbour and a working smoke alarm. If he didn’t, he might not have survived this fire.

“Our advice is to have a working smoke alarm on every level of your home and the safest option is have the alarms linked together. This will give the earliest warning if there is a fire in your home.”

POLICE ARE offering a £20,000 reward for anyone who comes forward with information about the unsolved murder of sixteen-year-old Walworth boy Mohamed Dura-Ray. Mohamed, known to his friends and family as Mo, was found stabbed to death on September 18

last year at the Newington Estate in Canterbury Place, Kennington.

Mohamed was pronounced dead at the scene at 10.52pm. He died two weeks before his seventeenth birthday.

Eight male suspects between the ages of sixteen and 54 were arrested, but no one has been convicted.

Speaking to the News one week before the six-month anniversary of Mo’s death, Detective chief inspector Graeme Gwyn, said: “I need all those who witnessed the

killing, the moments leading up to it and the aftermath, to speak with me and give an honest account of what they saw.

“I know that there are witnesses who still haven’t spoken with police.

I urge those people to listen to the pleas of a mother who has lost her son and is begging them to come forward and describe honestly what they saw.”

A trial of a 20-year-old man who had been charged with Mo’s murder was called off last month, after the

Crown Prosecution Services decided there was insufficient evidence.

Two suspects returned from bail in February, but they too were released while there is insufficient evidence to prosecute.

Mohamed’s mother, Mariama Kamara, said: “There is no pain greater than a parent losing a child.

The hearts of my family are completely broken.

“I would like to appeal to the public.

Anyone with any information or knowledge of my son's murder, I plead for you to come forward and speak to the police.

“Those responsible for my son’s

death should not get away with murder. The murder of my son should not be forgotten and justice should prevail. We as a family need closure.”

MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark, Neil Coyle, who marched with Mariama on anti-knife crime marches, gave a mention to the unsolved case in his question to Prime Minister David Cameron during last week’s PMQs session in the House of Commons.

UP TO 37,000 council housing tenants may have been overcharged

by Southwark Council for their water bills, lawyers have claimed.

The ruling was made in a dispute at the Royal Courts of Justice between the council and Camberwell resident Kim Jones. The case concluded on March 4 with the judge’s decision that Miss Jones has been overcharged by 22.1 percent on her weekly water bills since 2006.

The council is legally entitled to collect payment from tenants for water and sewage services provided by Thames Water, and it is also allowed include a fee for the administrative costs it incurs while providing this service for Thames Water. But the judge, Mr Justice Newey, concluded that Southwark Council had breached the rules laid out by the 2006 Water Resale Order, as it had “bought and re-sold water and sewage services” to its tenants while making a profit.

Because of the excessive fee the council charged, the judge said it had not acted as a “true agent”.

Southwark Council had therefore charged Miss Jones, and potentially the 37,000 tenants it charges under the same policy, more than the maximum allowed under the 2006 Order.

Councillor Richard Livingstone, cabinet member for housing, has issued a statement saying the council is “disappointed” with the judge’s decision, and have not ruled out appealing the

case. “Southwark Council (along with many other council landlords and housing associations) has been providing a service to Thames Water by billing tenants for their water, and collecting their payments,” Cllr Livingstone said.

“We have received a commission to cover our administration costs and the risk of non-payment, and any surplus has gone back in to the housing revenue account which pays for improvements to tenants’ homes and investment in new homes.”

Gareth Mitchell of Deighton Pierce Glynn, the solicitor firm representing Miss Jones, told the News that Southwark Council had been able to overcharge residents because of an agreement held with Thames Water.

Mr Mitchell said: “Thames Water and Southwark Council entered into a confidential agreement behind closed doors which none of the tenants who have been affected knew was happening.

We only found out about this after obtaining a court order that they disclose the agreement. “The courts decided approximately 37,000 households had been overcharged,” he said.

He added that Southwark Council was likely to have evicted former residents who had fallen into “water arrears” on added charges they were not liable to pay. “Southwark Council often evicts either wholly or in part because of water arrears. In the past people would have lost their homes because of charges they were not in fact liable to pay,” Mr

How does it work?

THE DEAL between Southwark Council and Thames Water allowed the council to collect payments for water and sewage services on the company’s behalf.

To provide this service to Thames Water, the council also incur administrative costs, which it then includes in bills it charges to tenants living in council homes.

This, the council says, is why Miss Jones’s bills were 22.1 per cent more than the basic costs of the services. But the dispute is whether Southwark Council charged a higher fee to their tenants than this administrative cost amounts to.

Southwark Council disagrees with

Livingstone’s, accusing him of repeating the same argument in his statement that he had been rejected by the high court judge.

A Southwark Council spokeswoman has clarified that Cllr Livingstone would like to maintain his line of argument, as the council still disagrees with the high court judge’s ruling.

A spokeswoman for Thames Water said: “London Borough of Southwark bill and collect water and waste water charges from their tenants on our behalf.

We are aware of the recent court case regarding this arrangement and are reviewing the judgement.”

HUNDREDS OF Peckham residents gathered last week for the launch of the new Peckham Citizens community-action group.

The new Citizens group has taken shape from a collective of local school and church organisations, all aiming to promote “social justice” and speak to Southwark Council with a united voice.

More than 330 arrived at the inaugural Citizens meeting in Rye Lane Chapel on March 2, and were joined by Harriet Harman MP and deputy leader of Southwark Council, Councillor Ian Wingfield.

The group say they were successful in the meeting of winning from Cllr Wingfield to looking for a site in the next 12 months for affordable community housing called a Community Land Trust (CLT).

Peckham Citizens chair, Callum Green, said the CLT homes would be priced according to average local earnings.

According to Office of National Statistics

data, this would mean selling onebedroom flats for £123,000, twobedroom flats for £173,000, and three bedroom-home homes for £273,000.

“Peckham Citizens shows what’s possible when people organise. Over 330

local people came together to take action to tackle the injustice we see in the area and compel those in power to act too,” Callum said.

“It was a fantastic moment of ordinary people having the power we need to see

make the changes we want for Peckham.”

Peckham Citizens also celebrated last month after securing funding from Southwark Council to make Kelly Avenue Park safer with a £23,000 grant.

A MAN was taken to hospital in a ‘critical condition’ last week after he was apparently pinned by the neck by a lorry following a rush-hour crash in Blackfriars Road.

Police, ambulance, fire brigade, and London Air Ambulance crews attended the scene, which occurred outside Southwark tube station at around 9am on March 3.

Witnesses to the collision report that a moped driver was trapped under the front wheels of a lorry, with witnesses describing “awful scenes” on social media.

Twitter user @SmokeyBarr said: “...Really bad scooter accident outside Southwark Tube. Doesn't look good.”

A spokesperson for Scotland Yard told the News: “Police were called to reports of a collision between a

Public meeting on future of burnt-out Walworth Town Hall WALWORTH: The future of the fire-damaged Walworth Town Hall will be discussed at a public meeting on April 5.

The meeting will be hosted by local group the Walworth Society at 7pm, and will be attended by Southwark Council’s leader, councillor Peter John, and chief executive Eleanor Kelly.

The Grade II listed hall, which dates back to 1865, was gutted by a fire in 2013.

The council first pledged to restore the building and make it a library and community hub.

But after the News revealed that costs to restore it would amount to £36m, the council has put three options to the public to vote on: • Finding an alternative building in Elephant and Castle for the library and community services, and find a partner who will lease the hall and restore it.

• Work with English Heritage on a solution that uses the building’s facades. This would be cheaper and allow the council to run the library and other facilities, but would sacrifices some historic features.

• If the public feels committed to rebuilding the original structure, the project will have to be paused until the council can find the money, while still having to pay maintenance costs.

An ongoing public consultation will end on March 31.

A BRAVE dog who saved his minder from a suspected arson attack by pulling the blanket off him as he slept is feared dead, as he has not been seen since the Camberwell inferno.

Noel Dalton was forced to throw himself 30 feet from his bedroom window when fire engulfed his home in Northlands Street on February 28.

He was minding Bosch, an English bull terrier, for a friend who was ill in hospital when smoke began to fill his flat in the three-floor shared building in the early hours.

The 57-year-old chef told the News: “He pulled the blanket off me and was running around the room. It took me a second to realise what was happening but then I saw the room was full of smoke and I started coughing.

“I went to the front door to the flat but it was boiling hot and I realised there was fire behind it. I tried to turn the light on but it didn’t work, it was completely black. I couldn’t see where I was going and could feel myself starting to go. I managed to make my way back into my bedroom and went to the window.”

Neighbours spotted Noel at the window and urged him to jump. By this point, fourteen-yearold Bosch had disappeared in the darkness and chaos of the flat, which was left “almost entirely damaged” according to a fire brigade spokesperson.

Noel said: “I wanted to throw him to someone but I couldn’t find him. I looked out and the window of the room beside mine just exploded with fire. I thought that was it, that was me

done for. People on the ground were shouting ‘you need to jump now.’”

He jumped to the cement floor from the second-storey window, dislocating his shoulder but amazingly survived the fire and fall with no long-term injuries. The real miracle, he said, was being woken up by the brave pooch.

He said: “He saved me, he really did. I want to make that clear. I would be dead if it wasn’t for him. I’m worried about him, he couldn’t have got out of the flat because the door was closed and he didn’t come out the window.

“He is a great dog, very playful.

There is a photo of him wearing my trilby hat. It’s not a nice thought, him lying there. Even if he is dead, it’s not nice that he’s lying there.”

A spokesperson for London Fire

Brigade told the News that firefighters had not reported finding a dog following the fire, which broke out at 4.30am and was brought under control by 8.50am.

In total five people were hospitalised in the incident, due to “fall-related injuries” or by cutting themselves on glass. A week and a half later, only Noel remains in hospital, waiting for the council to arrange temporary accommodation for him.

He said: “I’ve lost everything. A homeless charity donated some clothes and my boss did a collection and got me some stuff but I don’t have anything now.

“I can’t work now with my shoulder like this, so I am in real financial trouble.”

Police are currently investigating the blaze, which they are treating as arson.

One man, aged in his forties, has been arrested in connection with this incident. He has been bailed without charge, and enquiries continue.

She said: “From what I have seen, this masterplan seems to be an unpopular development which hasn’t won over the support of the existing community.

Nobody disputes that we need many more new homes in London. But we also need to site them sympathetically and that means persuading the local community of the benefits of a scheme, rather than imposing it on them from on

high – literally so, in this case.”

Southwark Green Party leader Colin Boyle declared that Rotherhithe “will be lost” and replaced by a “high-rise, densely packed urban landscape, with all the pressures on transport and amenities that impact many other parts of inner London.”

Emma Cariaga, Canada Water Masterplan project manager for British Land, said: “The proposals shared last month have evolved as a direct result of community feedback and showed a point in time in the development of the Canada Water Masterplan. We are now reviewing all the feedback received,

which will inform the further development of the Masterplan. We will consult further as the plans develop, throughout 2016 and are committed to involving the local community every step of the way in the development of our plans for Canada Water, ahead of a planning submission.”

Councillor Mark Williams, Southwark Council cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, said the project represented an effort to tackle the housing crisis “head on.”

He said: “At Canada Water, this means building new homes, including new genuinely affordable homes for

local residents, as well as new schools, a new leisure centre, and a new thriving town centre. We are working with TfL to make sure there is significantly more transport provision at Canada Water including more Jubilee Line and Overground services, more buses, removing the Lower Road Gyratory, extending cycle hire and building a new pedestrian and cycling bridge from Rotherhithe to Canary Wharf. There are over 12,000 families on Southwark’s waiting list for homes and developments like Canada Water will make a significant contribution in helping these Southwark residents find a home.”

A SPECIAL fundraiser will be held at Millwall this weekend to help raise funds for the upkeep of the Albert McKenzie statue.

The monument to the Bermondsey war hero was erected last October after a huge fundraising drive by residents and supporters.

However, more funds are needed to clean the statue, which was unveiled in Tower Bridge Road to a crowd of hundreds.

Millwall players will be among the attendees at the charity race night, which will be held in the stadium’s executive club on March 12.

Tickets will cost £10 and include a supper of bangers and mash, while the evening’s entertainment will

involve raffles, auctions and special games.

McKenzie fought valiantly during a WW1 mission in Zeebrugge Harbour in Belgium.

He came under fire as he breached walls of the heavily-guarded port, losing his machine gun in the process, carried on regardless, “pushing, kicking and kneeing every German who got in the way.”

He made it to safety and was awarded the Victoria Cross but sadly died of influenza in November just days before the end of the war.

JUNIOR DOCTORS, consultants and nurses held a public meeting last week to discuss ways to mobilise support from the public to combat the government’s new junior doctors’ contracts.

Junior doctors from King’s College, Maudsley, Guy’s and St Thomas’s hospitals are currently holding a 48-hour strike, which began on Wednesday at 9am.

Two more strikes are also planned to begin on April 6 and April 26 against the government’s plan to impose new contracts on doctors, which medical professionals fear will force them to work dangerously long shifts.

Under the new regime, junior doctors’ “normal hours” of 7am-7pm Monday to Friday would be redefined as 7am-10pm Monday to Saturday.

More than 30 attended the meeting, arranged at short notice, last Thursday night at the Albrighton Centre near Dog Kennel Lane.

Dr Chris James, a junior doctor at King’s College Hospital, told the meeting that junior doctors’ morale was “low” and that many felt their future looked bleak in the face of the contracts.

Addressing the meeting, Dr James said: “We need to look at what it would look like if we got all the consultants and nurses involved [in the strikes].

“There’s a real sense that we’re at the front line of something others consultants, nurses and even teachers – will be affected by down the line. We feel we need to get people from the wider community on board, and we need to reach out to more people.

“It’s not about the details on the contracts now. We now need to fight it [the contracts].”

The government’s plans, led by secretary of state for health, Jeremy Hunt, have also been criticized for scrapping rules that penalise hospitals for overworking their junior doctors. There will be new rules to stop them working more than four nights in a row, and for their maximum hours to be capped at 72per-week. But all junior doctors would be likely to work two weekends per month.

It is widely believed junior doctors would see a pay cut in real-terms, as the new contracts will mean they earn less for working night and weekend shifts which would cease to be defined as “unsociable hours”.

Will Marsh, a clinical psychiatrist at

Maudsley, stressed the need for junior doctors to muster the same level of campaigning that saved Lewisham Hospital’s A&E from government plans to close it, and downgrade other services, in 2012.

“At Lewisham it’s been unbelievable.

I’ve been so touched. We need the same support at the picket line during the junior doctors’ stirkes,” he said.

Will also slated the new contract conditions, saying they would make doctors’ ability to care for people “exceptionally difficult”.

“We are compassionate and caring individuals who want to look after people,” Will said.

“The number of doctors taking hours off work due to stress is going up each year. I think what’s now really striking and sad was that 4,000 junior doctors applied to leave the country last year, and that’s hundreds of thousands of pounds spent on training just wasted.

“From a mental health point of view I value continuity of care, which will be ruined by these longer hours. We know that continuity is what people really value.

“Without continuity doctors don’t get to know their patients and patients will be seen by different doctors who won’t know their background. This will impact on doctors’ ability to deliver compassionate care.”

Ruhe Chowdhury, an oncologist, specialising in the treatment of cancer, was third to speak.

She said: “Since these contracts were set we sent a survey to every oncologist in the country. It came back showing 97 per cent thought the contracts would be detrimental, and that our ability to treat people and access drugs for cancer care would get worse.

“We worked out we will need another 400 consultants to meet the UK’s growing need for cancer care. But 77 per cent said they would leave oncology as a result of these contracts. It worries them so much they’re willing to leave the profession.

“We looked at this contract and we know this is going to have a hugely detrimental effect on our patients and to our lives.”

Graham Fleming, an A&E consultant for King’s College Hospital, said: “I think people need to realise this isn’t an isolated change that will just matter to junior doctors.

“We’re seeing the NHS dissolve between our fingers. It’s going to affect everyone.

Hospitals’ CEOs decline interviews

DESPITE MULTIPLE requests from the News over the past few weeks, the CEOs of Southwark’s two main hospitals both refused to discuss in detail the ongoing protests over the junior doctor contracts and this week’s strike.

Amanda Pritchard, Chief Executive of Guy’s and St Thomas’, and Nick Moberly, Chief Executive of King’s College Hospital, both rejected requests for interviews, instead choosing to issue short statements.

Mr Moberly and Professor Julia Wendon, the hospital’s executive medical director, said: “Junior doctors play an absolutely crucial role in delivering services for patients at King’s. They are vital members of the team, and we care about their futures.

“We are prepared for the industrial

action taking place this week. We are in close contact with BMA representatives at the Trust, and we are working together to ensure we are able to deliver safe care during the industrial action.”

A spokesperson for Guys and St Thomas’ said: “We are closely following national developments regarding the new 2016 contract for junior doctors, which is due to be implemented in August.

“Guidance on the junior doctor contract has been provided to Trusts and we are currently considering this. We are grateful to our junior doctors for the excellent care that they continue to provide to our patients.”

Neither CEO would say whether they supported the implementation of the new junior doctor contracts.

A CREATIVE Dulwich schoolgirl has won an art competition with a difference, by designing a life-size panda statue.

Over 1,500 people entered the competition, which was organised by the World Wildlife Fund and DreamWorks Studios and won by Izzy from Alleyn’s Junior School.

The eleven-year-old designed a panda covered in wildlife imagery, which will be revealed at the London premier of Kung Fu Panda 3 on March 11.

She said: “I really enjoyed learning about the work of WWF and I hope my panda brings to life not only my imagination, but the conservation work being done every day by WWF.”

Record number of applicants and trend set to continue, says council

OVER 1,000 children in Southwark have missed out on their top secondary school choice this month as the council scrambled to deal with a record number of applicants.

Compared to other London boroughs, Southwark scored well below the average in the number of pupils who received their first choice (59.1 per cent against 68.5 per cent), or even one of their first three choices (85.5 per cent against 88.6 per cent).

It was, however, above average in terms of the number of pupils who did not receive a single one of their top-six choices (7.6 per cent against 6.1 per cent).

Southwark Liberal Dem’s education spokesperson councillor James Barber said the borough’s school places situation was a “time-bomb.”

He said: “Yet again, well over a third of our pupils are missing out on their first choice of school. Southwark is worse than the London average in every single secondary school admissions category.

“Liberal Democrats are fighting the corner

of young people who deserve better than being one of an ever-increasing number who lose out. Southwark families deserve a better approach than more and more children being crammed into bigger classes and learning in unsuitable spaces.

“The Labour council needs to stop the school places time-bomb and get on with proper planning and finding sites for new schools. Southwark’s population is set to grow and grow in the coming years. The council can’t just sit on its hands.”

Southwark Council turned the blame on the government, urging them to give the council “greater powers” to solve the crisis.

Councillor Victoria Mills, Southwark Council cabinet member for children and schools, said: “This year we were looking at record numbers of applications and this trend is set to continue. Despite us working closely with our schools to open a new school and to expand existing schools, the government must recognise that we need greater powers to plan and deliver places and this should be backed up by money to build the high quality school places our children deserve.”

Pensioner on Purdy charges

A PENSIONER charged with offences in connection with the fatal shooting of eighteen-yearold Walworth boy Ben Purdy will appear at Woolwich Crown Court later this month.

Alexander Bayne, 70, was charged on February 4 with assisting an offender and committing an act with the intent to pervert the course of public justice.

Last week, Bayne appeared at Bromley Magistrates' Court and was bailed to appear at Woolwich Crown Court on March 31.

Comedian and musicians want to keep Half Moon as live venue

COMEDIAN JO Brand joined over one hundred Herne Hill residents last week at a musical protest against the removal of live entertainment from the iconic Half Moon Pub.

The mini festival was organised by campaigners furious at plans by leaseholders Fullers to convert the pub’s stage into a restaurant and kitchen area.

The pub’s musical heritage dates back decades and includes live performances by U2 and The Police, as well as shows by Ms Brand and other comedy headliners. It is scheduled to reopen in late summer for the first time since it was devastated by a flood in 2013.

Ms Brand said at the event: “I’ve lived in the area since 1978. Live music and comedy are an essential part of our community. Herne Hill is vibrant and needs this venue.

The protest included a musical performance by DJ Food, O’Connell & Love from Alabama 3, who wrote and performed the theme tune to the TV show The Sopranos.

night that the Half Moon was open, and we are now reduced to playing on the street, when there is a perfectly good venue just round the corner that could've hosted this festival.”

Killed Bermondsey boy’s brother joins other grieving families at Den tribute day

MILLWALL FANS paid respect to the family of Bermondsey boy Tommy Blackmore last weekend when his brother took part in a special pre-match display with seven other grieving families.

The event was organised by the For Jimmy charity, which was set up to honour murdered teen and Millwall fan Jimmy Mizen and raise awareness about the tragic consequences of youth violence.

Bradley Blackmore was applauded on the pitch as he held a Lions shirt aloft with Tommy’s name and the number eight emblazoned on the back.

He said: “It was a really big reception. Obviously everyone was applauded, there was a West Ham fan there and he was applauded, but when Tommy and Jimmy’s name was read out it was a huge roar. It sends goosebumps down my back just thinking about it.”

He said it was an important experience to meet Jimmy’s family and the families of Alan Cartwright, Sam Guidera, Rob Knox, Godwin

Lawson, Danny O’Shea and Connor Saunders, who were all killed due to youth violence.

Bradley said: “With your own family and friends you leave a barrier up, do you know what I mean? You don’t want to upset them so you get upset by yourself. But these people understand so you can drop your guard.”

over Blackpool, along with the other families, in Millwall chairman John Berylson’s box at The Den. Mr Berylson said: “We are delighted that so many other London clubs have chosen to become involved with Jimmy’s Day at The Den on Saturday, and that all these young people who died in such tragic circumstances will be remembered and celebrated.”

Tommy died in June when convicted drug dealer Lloyd Smythe, 29, from the Tabard Gardens Estate, Borough, delivered a “boxing jab” to the head outside Mono Lounge nightclub near Tower Bridge on June 12.

Tommy was a “totally innocent victim” in the unprovoked attack, for which Smythe was jailed for manslaughter.

Campaigners slam Hamlet plans

CAMPAIGNERS have slammed plans to build Dulwich Hamlet’s proposed new stadium on Metropolitan Open Land (MOL) at the Green Dale Fields.

The development, which would include a new clubhouse, leisure facility and 155 homes, was showcased at a series of exhibitions at the club’s current Champion Hill ground last month.

However, the proposals by developers and club owners Hadley to build the new stadium over an astro-turf pitch and a portion of the fields themselves, located to the west of the current ground, have alarmed supporters of the area’s green spaces.

Jasia Warren, chair of Friends of Dog Kennel Hill Wood, said: “Green Dale is used by many locals daily who love the calm green oasis for dog walking, jogging, blackberry picking and informal kickabouts on the astro turf.

“Allowing the stadium to be built on MOL could open the door to developers building on MOL elsewhere.”

Southwark Council have their own plans to “enhance” the Green Dale Fields, which are being incorporated into Hadley’s proposals – although residents argue that these plans will also prove detrimental to the wildlife area.

Jasia said: “The council does indeed have plans to sanitise and formalise the fields, but these plans are also questioned by locals who see the value in leaving it as a wild space with minimal intervention and management.

Many rare species are to be found there, including hedgehogs and White Throat [a warbler] which migrate there from

Africa.”

Other residents echoed Jasia’s concerns, including resident Simon Hughes, who said the proposals were causing an unnecessary rift in the community. He said: “The football club does not need a new stadium to survive: it needs good financial management and good football and is presently doing well. It can build a new stadium on the existing stadium footprint and football fans and the local community will both be rewarded.

“Hadley want to build on MOL to maximise profit and is not bothered if it splits the conservation and footballing communities and kills off the wildlife.”

A spokesperson for Hadley said: “We’ve facilitated numerous works that Friends of Greendale have requested, and consistently taken their advice on how best to look after the site before it is returned to the community. We firmly believe that Greendale is a better place to visit since we first got involved at Champion Hill, and have no plans for that to change whatsoever.

“Whilst we acknowledge that the existing, derelict artificial pitch is in designated MOL, we are proposing that only stadium boundaries are actually built on Greendale. By bringing the pitch back in closer towards the existing stadium site, we have managed to ensure that the clubhouse, the leisure facility, and of course the housing, will only be built on land we own – not on Greendale at all. The new floodlights will be lower in height than those currently in use, and will significantly decrease light pollution at the site.”

The News contacted the council for a comment on Tuesday morning, but did not receive a reply by the time of going to press.

SOUTHWARK: Love rats of Southwark beware! Scandalous statistics revealing the number of cheaters in the borough have been released – and it doesn’t make pleasant viewing.

According to an ‘Infidelity Index’ released this month, over 3500 people are cheating on their wives or husbands in Bermondsey.

Further south in the Camberwell and Peckham area along with, surprisingly, Nunhead, well over 1000 people are also being unfaithful to their spouses, they say.

Worried wives and husbands can somewhat relax across the rest of the borough, which is relatively better behaved.

They claim there are 997 adulterers on the Rotherhithe peninsula, 585 in Dulwich and 301 in Herne Hill – although this may spike once the booze begins to flow again when the Half Moon Pub reopens this summer. The index were put together by Illicit Encounters, a website specialising in extra-marital affairs.

Franchise sought to keep branch open in Rye Lane

THE CROWN Post Office in Rye Lane could be forced to close because of a developer’s plans to build six flats above its shop front.

An application was submitted to Southwark Council by Allview Estates Ltd in May last year to build three two-bedroom and three onebedroom apartments above the Post Office.

But a Post Office spokeswoman said although the developer wants the post office to stay in the ground floor, the Post Office could still be forced under while waiting for building work to finish. The reconstruction of the shop front and floors one to three could take over twelve months. To stay in business the Post Office would need to leave its home in Rye Lane

altogether, and instead find a franchise partner to move in with.

The spokeswoman said: “We are proposing to close the Rye Lane Crown Post Office branch, subject to public consultation.”

She added that the area is already “well served” by post offices with five others within a 1.6-mile radius, which have the capacity to absorb extra business.

“We are also advertising to see if

there is any interest from a local retailer to open a Post Office, to supplement the area’s services,” she said.

“We have explained the situation to the staff and that the broad options available to them will be potential redeployment within the company or voluntary redundancy.”

The News understands that before Allview Estates applied for this development they had already made an application to demolish the building entirely. The council rejected this application, but the decision is due to be appealed by Allview.

Eileen Conn of community group Peckham Vision said locals “would be shocked” to hear about its closure.

“We certainly need a large Post Office facility in south Rye Lane, there are always long queues. It is an important trading centre,” Eileen said.

“A lot of people would be shocked to hear it might close. They say there are five branches within a 1.6 miles radius from that post office. But that is a long way on foot. What’s more relevant is how many are there within a 5-10 minute walk?”

A ‘FATBERG’ filled four Herne Hill shops’ basements with sewage water on Thursday after an underground pipe blockage.

Oxfam Books, Duo Dance, Mary Russell newsagents and Burnett Ware estate agents were all affected by the Thames Water pipe rupture.

The blockage, which ruined stock and took hours to clear, was caused by a mass of congealed fats and sanitary items, known as a “fatberg”.

New credit union opens on Walworth Road WALWORTH

A NEW credit union where people can borrow cash on low interest rates had its official opening on Walworth Road last Thursday.

The London Mutual Credit Union branch, a non-profit organisation, aims to compete with pay-day loan companies like Wonga in helping cashstrapped residents to get credit safely.

The opening ceremony was attended by deputy-leader of the Labour Party, Tom Watson MP, as well as Southwark Council cabinet members Stephanie Cryan and Fiona Colley.

Joan Driscoll, a London Mutual senior manager, said: “We’re cheaper than loan companies. If you borrow £100 from Wonga you will pay 24 per cent interest.

If you borrowed that much from us it would cost £3.

“We won’t lend people money they can’t afford to borrow, so our customers won’t get themselves in more debt. Each individual is different, and we look at everyone properly.

“If someone is on benefits and they get sanctioned, or something goes wrong, and they need access to credit, that’s the moment they turn to a high street lender.

But we give them a choice.”

Jeremy Leach, chair of Walworth Society, said: “Three years ago we were really campaigning against the number of pay-day loans shops, betting shops and pawn brokers that had opened up here. We’re delighted that we’ve got our own credit union.”

Tom Watson MP said: “Credit unions are ideally placed to provide access to ethical finance and to help people manage their money better, keeping them out of the clutches of loan sharks and high interest payday lenders.”

“We found out at about 3.30pm when one of the shops next door came in and told us,” she said.

“There was about a foot of water in the basement, and it took Thames Water until 1am to fix it.

“We think it was a burst water pipe, and it wasn’t completely sorted until Saturday, and we still had to get all our stuff out. But we’re back to normal now.”

A Thames Water spokesman said: “We’re working very closely with

the four customers affected by basement flooding on Thursday to help them get back to normal as quickly as possible.

“Once we cleared our blocked sewer – which had become jammed by a fatberg – all the water in the basements was able to drain away naturally.

“We will continue to monitor the situation closely, but our tests show the sewer is now flowing as it should.”

The company has said it will cover any losses caused to the businesses.

Actor McKellen pays pupils a visit WORLD-FAMOUS actor Sir Ian McKellen last week paid a visit to the James Allen’s Girls' school in north Dulwich.

Sir Ian, who starred in the Lord of the Rings and X Men films, spoke to the pupils in small groups about his life experiences.

Two girls from the school even presented a delighted Sir Ian with their own portraits they had painted of him.

A spokeswoman for the school said: “It was an extraordinary day and he said he really admired the paintings of him.”

GUY’S AND St Thomas’ and other NHS organisations in Southwark have joined forces to improve patient care by sharing electronic patient records through a new secure system.

The Local Care Record allows GPs, hospital and community healthcare staff to see important information about a patient at the touch of a button before making any decisions about their treatment.

Patient records are already shared between local NHS organisations via secure post, fax and email, but these methods can sometimes be slow.

Now doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals at Guy’s and St Thomas’, King’s College Hospital and South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trusts and local GP practices can view each other’s patient records quickly and securely.

The Trust received a score of 4.03 (on a scale of 1-5) for staff engagement this year, compared to a national average of 3.79 for combined acute and community trusts.

Car clubs save cash and help the planet

HERE ARE over 8,000 former or potential car-owners in Southwark who are already saving thousands of pounds in car costs every year, whilst also helping save the planet.

They are the members of the local carsharing club. Club members one of over 150 Zipcars (zipcar.co.uk) parked in specially reserved street parking spaces across the Borough, from as little as £6 an hour.

The RAC estimates including depreciation it costs about £6,000 to own a car per annum. Many people realised that a car-club makes far more sense economically, if they are only using the car for occasional big-item shopping or trips to visit the in-laws or elderly parents.

Car-clubs also make important environmental savings. Each club-car can replace up to 20 individually owned cars. This would save about 38 tonnes of metal, plastic and glass. It also frees up some of the huge amount of public open space taken up by carparking and roads. In London it is estimated that 90% of our open space is now dedicated to car-users, when it used to be used by children to play outside their homes.

This is mad as the census says only 20% of Southwark residents own a car.

Car clubs help people think twice about driving short journeys. Two-thirds of journeys in Southwark are under 5 miles and so cyclable in about 25 minutes. This reduces traffic congestion which helps business. It also reduces pollution which benefits all of us whether we are pedestrians, cyclists or drivers.

Most cars are parked unused for 95% of the time, selfishly wasting valuable space in the inner city, that could be used for kids play, housing or growing food.

Club membership costs about £60 per year and £30 for a second driver. You can book your nearest club-car online or via a mobile app. They have an easy club-car finding map online. There is a club-car within about 10 minutes walk of nearly everyone in Southwark. So if you are a local car-owner, why not think about it? You could soon be saving thousands of pounds and also happy knowing you are helping clean the air your kids breathe and saving the planet all at the same time.

IN YOUR report on the approval of plans to redevelop Peckham Rye Station you notice that a member of the planning committee "could sense a great amount of unhappiness from residents".

This is true even among those of us who favour the creation of an open square. We are dismayed that despite having committed a great deal of time and energy to a supposed 'co-design' process, there is very little sign of community input in the detailed plans.

Council will not give homes if you don’t pay rent

LAST WEEK, Housing Action Southwark and Lambeth (HASL) wrote in to criticise the council’s decision to evict Faysal Abdirahman and his family from temporary accommodation, after it was found that the council had no duty to house them as they had made themselves intentionally homeless through not paying rent to their previous landlord.

These decisions are always difficult, but have to be seen alongside the facts that we have 13,000 households on the council house waiting list, and that we have seen an 80% increase in the numbers of people in temporary accommodation since December

2012 (meaning that Southwark council tax payers are having to find an extra £2.4 million to support them at a time when the council budget is being viciously slashed by the government). If the council agree to house people it had no duty towards, both of those problems would only grow in scale.

One of the most heart-wrenching parts of my job is hearing from families with children in overcrowded conditions or with medical needs telling me that their position in band 3 on the housing list means that they have been waiting for a long time to get the home they need. Even with the ambitious council house building plans of the council, that situation will continue for years yet. So it seems very unfair to me to ask those families to wait even longer – which is what would happen if we were to agree to let people we have no legal duty towards jump the queue, as HASL seem to want.

And that queue and that wait would get longer still if the council were sent out a message to everyone that if you stop paying your landlord, don’t worry Southwark Council will find you a council home.

Mr Abdirahman appealed the decision that he was intentionally homeless last year, and was told he was unsuccessful in July. It is therefore odd that the letter writer thinks that the seven months between that decision and the eviction is insufficient notice to find alternative housing.

We will still of course continue to offer support to the family to find a new home, but this will not be a council house that they have no right to.

Dulwich Hamlet does not need a new stadium

IN YOUR article ‘Hamlet’s New Home?’ (Southwark News, February 25, 2016) your unbalanced view failed to point out that is was bad for the community to build on Metropolitan Open Land, which is provided to help human health, biodiversity and quality of life.

To this end it is nurtured by the Friends of Green Dale and enjoyed by the whole community including football fans. A rich biodiversity ensues. Rare creatures thrive. The air is cleaner.

The football club does not need a new stadium to survive: it needs good financial management and good football and is presently doing well. It can build a new stadium on the existing stadium footprint and football fans and the local community will both be rewarded.

Hadley want to build on Metropolitan Open land to maximise profit and is not bothered if it splits the conservation and foot-balling communities and kills off the wild life. It has often repeated that it is not interested in the long term success of the club.

The football club can build itself a new stadium and the Metropolitan Open Land can be retained if Hadley restricts the number of houses it builds.

We can all win.

LMOST EXACTLY a month ago, a distraught local parent visited one of my regular advice surgeries to talk to me about the situation facing her fifteen year-old son, Matthew.

Matthew is autistic, and has other complex mental health needs. Last September Matthew attacked his dad, and was sectioned under the Mental Health Act, a distressing situation for any family. It was agreed very quickly that the best place for Matthew to be was a specialist facility in Northampton.

Matthew was sent to a Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) in Woking to wait for the specialist place to become available. Six months later Matthew is still in the original PICU, which is unable to treat him or even assess his needs, because there are patients in Northampton who are ready to go home but can’t because the community care and support simply isn’t there as a result of this government’s cuts.

His parents have to travel a long distance to visit him and sometimes not able to reach him on the phone for days. Matthew’s mental and physical health are deteriorating.

He doesn’t understand why he can’t come home and believes he is in prison.

Matthew’s case is a terrible example of how mental health services are failing children and young people. I know from conversations with local doctors and parents that there is a crisis in mental health care for children, and it is normal for children who need to be admitted to hospital with a mental illness to be sent a long distance from home for the care that they need, making them even more vulnerable.

I am pressing the government to sort out the care that Matthew needs as soon as possible, so that he can recover and come home to his family and their heartbreak can end. I will continue to campaign until the government gives mental health the same priority as physical health within the NHS, so that vulnerable children are no longer sent long distances away from home and mental health services are readily available to anyone who needs them.

The REAL Great Fire of London

EVERYONE KNOWS about the Great Fire of London – or, at least, they think they do. A huge blaze in 1666 devastated the city, destroying 13,200 homes, 87 churches and St Paul’s Cathedral. Temperatures in Pudding Lane, where the fire began, reached 1700 degrees Celsius during the peak of the inferno, while smoke could be seen as far away as Oxford, writes Joey Millar...

But while it was certainly a huge fire, only six deaths were recorded.

While nothing to be sniffed at, this death toll pales into startling insignificance when compared with a far, far more deadly blaze that occurred in the city several hundred years earlier.

On July 10, 1212, up to 3,000 people are thought to have perished in a terrifying fire that broke out in Southwark, before crossing London Bridge into the City. Around 7.5% of the city’s population perished in horrific circumstances – the equivalent of 637,500 people dying in a fire today. For hundreds of years this blaze was known, rightly so, as the Great Fire of London. It is only the passing of the centuries that has extinguished the memory and devastating impact of the single

deadliest fire in British history.

Also known as the Great Fire of Southwark, the blaze took place in a London very different from today.

London Bridge was unrecognisable from its present day form, with the bridge packed with huge wooden tenement blocks and shopping quarters.

Historian Toni Mount sets the scene in her book Everyday Life in Medieval London: “Shops and houses crammed both sides of the narrow thoroughfare across the river, their upper storeys jutting out, some even adjoining their opposite neighbour, enclosing the road beneath and making it a gloomy tunnel, restricting the light.”

Shops, as many as 67, crammed the bridge at the time of the fire, seeking to make the most of the generous foot traffic passing across the filthy Thames. It was this packed, jigsaw arrangement of wooden homes and shops that would prove fatal to so many.

Unlike the second Great Fire of London, which has been traced to a single oven in a single bakery, the cause of the 1212 blaze is unknown.

All that can be determined from records is that at some point on that July afternoon, a portion of

Southwark – then known as South Warke – was suddenly ablaze. The church of St Mary Overie was destroyed, while much of Borough High Street was levelled. Residents of Southwark, forced north by the blaze, fled onto London Bridge and started making their way across.

residents, were people rushing south from the City towards the fire. While it may be kinder to say that the crowd were hurrying to help extinguish the fire, as undoubtedly a number were, it can be assumed that a huge number were more interested in rubbernecking as the blaze destroyed the north of the borough.

The bridge, crowded at the best of times, was suddenly as packed as it

had ever been since it was constructed three years previously.

The conditions in the narrow streets must have been horrific, with the huge crowd jostling for space, panicking livestock and inadvertently destroying stalls and shops.

When a fierce wind carried sparks across the bridge, sparking a fire at the northern end of the bridge and trapping thousands of people in the dark, crowded alleys, the scenes must have turned hellish.

The fire ate its way inwards from both ends of London Bridge, pushing the desperate residents closer and closer into the depths of the bridge. A huge number of people died from the flames and smoke, others from the crush and others – with a heavy and tragic dose of irony – drowned in rushing but useless water beneath the bridge.

Ms Mount said: “Boats on the river tried to rescue those who were trapped on the bridge, but so many terrified people jumped into the boats that many were capsized or sank, drowning the crews along with those they tried to save.”

When the fire burned itself out and the smoke lifted, there was not much remaining on the bridge other than

its stone foundations. All the houses were destroyed, along with a chapel, while there was little trace left of those unfortunate souls who had been unable to escape the bridge.

Ms Mount said: “Afterwards, halfburned bodies were found in the wreckage of the buildings, often no more than piles of ashes, unidentifiable.

“For years afterwards, although still usable as a means of crossing the Thames, London Bridge remained a partial ruin, with no money for repairs.”

Thatched roofs were banned that year but it was too little, too late. In truth, London did not respond in any real way to ensure that such a blaze never happened again. In the 17th century, in the lead-up to the second Great Fire, fires were still being fought with buckets and hand-held pumps.

In the end it was the blaze in 1666 that changed the capital’s mindsight and helped develop a thought-out firefighting system. For the 3,000 people who died in the flames and the water in July 1212, however, these developments came far too late. The tragedy of the fire is that the huge loss of life was not only unnecessary but has now also been forgotten.

THE A205 GLA ROAD AND GLA SIDE ROAD (LONDON ROAD AND LORDSHIP LANE, LONDON BOROUGHS OF SOUTHWARK AND LEWISHAM) (TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC AND STOPPING) ORDER 2016

1. Transport for London hereby gives notice that it has made the above named Traffic Order under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 for the purpose specified in paragraph 2. The effect of the Order is summarised in paragraph 3.

2. The purpose of the Order is to enable resurfacing works to take place on Lordship Lane and London Road.

3. The effect of the Order will be to prohibit any vehicle from:

a) entering, exiting, proceeding or stopping on Lordship Lane/ London Road eastbound between Dulwich Common and Taymount Rise;

b) entering, exiting, proceeding or stopping on Lordship Lane/ London Road westbound between Dulwich Common and Taymount Rise;

c) entering, exiting, proceeding or stopping on Lordship Lane northbound between Dulwich Common and Melford Road;

d) entering, exiting, proceeding or stopping on Lordship Lane southbound between Dulwich Common and Melford Road;

This Order will also suspend the banned left turn from London Road westbound into Sydenham Hill, allowing vehicles to turn left;

This Order will also suspend the one-way restriction on Melford Road for local access only, allowing two-way operation.

The Order will be effective at certain times between the 12th March 2016 until the 12th December 2016 every night from 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM or when the works have been completed whichever is the sooner. The prohibition will apply only during such times and to such extent as shall from time to time be indicated by traffic signs.

4. The prohibitions will not apply in respect of:

(1) any vehicle being used for the purposes of those works or for fire brigade, ambulance or police purposes;

(2) anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or a person authorised by Transport for London.

5. At such times as the prohibitions are in force an alternative route will be indicated by traffic signs via: (1) for Melford Road closure: Wood Vale, Melford Road, Underhill Road, Dunstans Road, Upland Road;

(2) for Underhill Road closure: Underhill Road, Melford Road, Wood Vale, Forest Hill Road, Honor Oak Road; (3) for Sydenham Hill closure: Sydenham Rise;

THE SOUTHWARK Legends U18 men's basketball team were crowned league champions at the weekend after their latest wins.

Their 15-1 winning record now means they have an unassailable lead in the South III Development table of the National Basketball League.

The Peckham side, who play their

home games at the Damilola Taylor Centre on East Surrey Grove, now have a break before they take part in the play-offs next month.

Head coach Rotimi Adeeko said: “The real challenge is still ahead for us, entering the playoffs will not be easy, but as long as we work to our potential I’ll be proud of our accomplishments regardless as to the result.”

He added: “We are a young team,

only two years playing in the National League, so our main objective is to build upon this foundation and continue to improve our team, coaches and methods of approach.

“We’ve worked hard for our successes this season and intend to only improve for the future. The following four weeks will be preparation for the playoffs, which begin in first weekend of April, so the hard work continues.”

A SECOND half goal from striker Dean McDonald ensured Dulwich came away with a point last Saturday in their league encounter with Wingate & Finchley.

The striker was on the end on a Ryan Moss centre on 63 minutes that cancelled out a Leon Fisher penalty nine minutes earlier.

The 1-1 draw extended Hamlet’s winless league run to five games, a stuttering run of form that has seen them go from contenders for top spot to scrapping to ensure they make the end of season playoffs. After Saturday’s games Dulwich were fourth in the Ryman Premier League

but they had a number of teams snapping at their heels, looking for one of four playoff spots, seeking to leave Hamlet with no shot at promotion.

Reeco Hackett-Fairchild has joined Hamlet on loan from League Two side Dagenham & Redbridge and the young winger made his debut late on in the Wingate game at the weekend.

The Pink and Blues are on their travels again this Saturday, this time in Essex, where there will take on Billericay Town.

The Essex side are just outside the playoff places and three points for Hamlet would help them begin to get their season back on track. Wingate & Finchley then play Hamlet again next Tuesday evening, this time at Champion Hill, in another Ryman Premier League encounter.

STANSFELD'S TEN game unbeaten run ended last Saturday with a humiliating 4-0 home defeat to Fleetdown United.

The home side were second best from the very first whistle and despite early chances they found themselves behind after a series of errors by Stansfeld saw Ricky Akers head United ahead.

Things got far worse for Stansfeld when centre-half Lennie Wise was shown a red card for reacting to being head butted by Fleetdown's Michael Close, who also received his marching orders.

Fleetdown soon doubled their lead when Brook Jackson lost his marker at a corner to head home unchallenged at the near post.

Stansfeld switched to a back three to try to give themselves more attacking options, but the game was all but over on 75 minutes when Fleetdown added a

SHANE FERGUSON has developed a bit of the devil in him since signing for Millwall.

At least that’s how it looked last Saturday when the normally mildmannered winger went for Tom Aldred after feeling the Blackpool captain had deliberately provoked him.

Ferguson had just been fouled by Hayden White, who had already been booked for a lunge at Carlos Edwards, and as referee Lee Swabey was giving the right-back his marching orders, the Northern Ireland international was marching straight for Aldred.

“There was a bad tackle before on Carlos so I knew he was booked and wanted to try to get at White a bit more,” Ferguson explained.

“The next time I got the ball from Ed Upson down the line he pulled me back.

“One of their guys then kicked the ball at me trying to get a reaction and he nearly did, to be fair! The ref had to give me a bit of a telling-off as well and that calmed me down.

“We were under a wee bit of pressure at the time, but it’s just part of the game and you have to get on with it.”

Ferguson and Jed Wallace terrorised Blackpool’s defence in the 3-0 win. Wallace scored his first goal for the club, while Lee Gregory and Steve Morison brought their combined total of goals this season to 35 in all competitions.

Millwall dropped two points against the same opposition when they drew 1-1 at Bloomfield Road in Octobber, but Ferguson felt the freedom they played with this time was key to a comfortable win.

“The manager said before the game to be direct,” Ferguson said.

“We played against them before so he said to do what I did the last game.

“I thought we played really well last Saturday. The first time we played them they sat in and made it difficult. But last weekend we just played really positively.

“Jed caused them a lot of problems and the two strikers did as well.”

THERE WERE no suggestions after this from Neil Harris he’d have to get his shooting boots on.

Whereas every chance that came in the 0-0 draw with Wigan was wasted, on Saturday Millwall were ruthless.

Blackpool’s defending was woeful, and it’s difficult to see them getting out of the relegation zone if this is the performance they produce in a supposed dogfight. At one point early in the first half their media press team could be heard acknowledging Millwall had “figured them out”.

Forget that, it looked like they couldn’t even figure themselves out.

Harris highlighted the performances afterwards of Jimmy Abdou and Ben Thompson, who were excellent against opponents with a three-man midfield. But Blackpool’s problems were more obvious, and therefore more worrying, than systems or formations.

A couple of incidents highlighted their disorganisation and apparent indifference: Hayden White failing to respond when Tom Aldred urged him to quickly push up to maintain a coherent defensive line, before Brad Potts threw his arms up in the air in frustration after Colin Doyle had boomed a goal-kick straight through to his opposite number.

White would later compound a poor performance with a second booking for a foul on Shane Ferguson just outside the box. All in all, Blackpool were the ideal opponents for Millwall in front watching chairman John Berylson.

None of that is to diminish a Millwall display that was thoroughly professional and clinical. They missed 20 chances against Wigan, but they had three shots on goal against the Tangerines and took all three.

Lee Gregory scored his 21st goal of the season in the eighth minute and Steve Morison’s penalty, after Aldred had somewhat unluckily seen the striker’s shot hit his arm, means the pair have 35 goals between them this season.

In between, Jed Wallace scored his first goal in a Millwall shirt. Again, Blackpool were their own worst enemies, breaking apart in the wall to allow Wallace’s well-struck free-kick into the bottom corner past a furious Doyle.

But for all the praise that has been lavished on the Lions’ attacking players this season, a defence that kept a six clean sheets in eight games deserves credit.

A lot of that security is down to the diligent work of Abdou and Thompson in front of the back four.

There have been more eye-catching performers this season, but then Abdou’s game isn’t about that.

There was a five-minute cameo in the second half that illustrated his value to the side: He covered two movements forward by Blackpool midfielder Potts before joining an attack and then sprinting 70 yards back to provide cover in front of his back four. Next he tracked substitute full-back Emmerson Boyce’s run forward to win back possession.

Beside him Thompson gave a typically combative performance. The way he got to his feet after taking a kick to the head from Mark Cullen in the second half nicely summed up what makes him such a big favourite at The Den. Later, Harris described him as a “warrior”.

Edwards was pressed into action at left-back in place of the suspended Joe Martin, and it was his run after a Millwall counterattack that led to the free-kick that Wallace scored. The one blemish on the afternoon was Edwards’ departure in the 65th minute, after he had taken a whack on the leg from White, that makes him a doubt for the trip to Swindon this weekend.

Blackpool did manage to find the back of the net in the second half when Cullen pounced after Jordan Archer had saved, but the linesman’s flag had already shot up. The only other time Archer was troubled was when Potts fired a half-volley towards goal but the keeper relatively comfortably tipped the ball over the bar. Potts also fizzed another longrange effort just wide.

But Blackpool were well beaten, their raggedness illustrated when Gregory scored. It was such a straightforward goal, Edwards’ throw allowed to bounce and Gregory had perhaps his easiest finish of the season.

Blackpool boss Neil MacDonald’s mood would have darkened further in the 24th minute when he watched the defensive wall split and Wallace had his first of the season. Afterwards he was promising more before he goes back to Wolves on April 9.

There were a few signs of attacking life in Blackpool, at least. Mark Beevers had to make a last-ditch block as Uche Ikpeazu was about to shoot in the box, while a better touch from Jim McAlister may have allowed him test an underworked Archer.

rampant Millwall. The damage, some of it self-inflicted, had been done.

The Lions just couldn’t afford to slip up on Saturday with a cluster of clubs clogging up the table behind Wigan and Burton, and a disorderly queue forming outside the top six. It really is a manic scramble.

They didn’t stumble and while automatic promotion is a tall order it looks like it would take a slump in form to slip out of top-six contention.

That doesn't look likely at the moment.

The final whistle brought perhaps the warmest reception of the season from home fans who had appreciated the effort they had seen. And on this evidence there should be plenty more to appreciate between now and May. Man of the match: Jimmy Abdou

MILLWALL CHAIRMAN John Berylson flew into London from the United States last week and on Saturday watched a confident Lions side sweep aside Blackpool 3-0.

It was his first game at The Den since Lewisham Council, on February 17, delayed a decision that could have drastically affected the future of the club.

That future is still uncertain, with the club hoping to meet members of the Council to see whether agreement can be reached on land around The Den coveted by property developer, Renewal.

In the first part of a two-part exclusive interview, Southwark News spoke to Mr Berylson about the events of the last month, and his hopes for

Firstly, what was your reaction to Lewisham Council’s decision last month?

Now I think it’s going to start being a fairer process, I think things will develop. If you think of it in terms of football, for 89 minutes we were on the outside losing, so to speak, and in the 90th minute we’ve equalised.

I didn’t go to the meeting, but I clearly think we’re in the right, there’s no question about it. A lot of facts have come out which have clearly undercut their position.

We weren’t allowed to bid on this land. Years ago they said they would work with us and we’d work together but then suddenly everybody stopped talking to us.

They claimed that we had no architectural plans but (Southwark News) showed that to the contrary. We spent a lot of money on many sets of plans, the last one being two-and-a half years ago. We’ve spent in the

millions of pounds with architects and the facts are contrary to everything Lewisham Council have said.

You wrote them a letter before that crucial meeting on February 17.

Did you get answers to the questions you asked?

Everything in that letter is accurate.

There has been no formal response but the members of Lewisham Cabinet have agreed to visit The Den and the surrounding land next month so we can show them our plans.

The future of the land is still uncertain and the time for a Council decision will come around again. What would you and the club do if they go ahead and obtain a CPO and thus you lose the land?

We would drag them to a judicial review. It’s an odd thing, I think the other side has been unwise in their relationship with us.

If Edwards misses out with a dead leg, Shane Ferguson could drop back from midfield to replace the suspended Joe Martin.

Williams has been nominated for the League One manager of the month award for February, along with striker Nicky Ajose.

However, Williams isn’t yet admitting Swindon are in play-off contention, but says this weekend’s clash with Millwall could be pivotal to those ambitions.

“It is going to tell us a great deal (about what we can achieve this season),” Williams told the media in Swindon.

“First and foremost, we need to make sure we get one more win to put us in a situation where we know that we are going to be in the division for sure and there is no chance of relegation.

We want this regeneration, it can only help the club. What’s going on in Elephant and Castle (A £3billion regeneration project) I’d like to happen where we are. I’m a proponent of regeneration but, no, our land is not for free and, no, we’re not going to destroy the future of the football club.

I’ve invested a lot of time and money in this football club and I don’t think that should be ignored.

I always tell people, when I’m trying to describe the club, it’s as English a football club as there really is.

Millwall, and clubs like us, are the backbone and what the English character is all about. If you look at my background I was always taught to stand up for myself. And I will.

So Millwall are ready to go ahead with their own regeneration if an agreement can be reached with the Council?

A hundred per cent. We can work with other people. There are a lot of things that can happen here. The truth is, and I know they deny it, but Renewal have talked to other parties about selling the land.

They were in the States trying to raise money for a long time.

Some supporters might suspect that, after ploughing £50million into Millwall, you want an opportunity to make some back.

What would you say to those people?

This is a defence of the club. It’s not a matter of whether I’m telling the truth or not, it’s the law. This company (Millwall) has a negative retained balance, it’s a public company. Let’s say they wrote us a cheque. I can’t take the money by English law. I have to leave it in the club.

I’ve always said I would. (Chief Executive) Andy (Ambler) has called it ‘futureproofing the club’. I’m going to be 63 years old shortly. You never know what can happen, if there is a transition at some point. I’ve three children, I’m about to have my fifth

MILLWALL 47 grandchild. I have one son on the board already. It could be him or someone else taking over.

But I’ve got no intention of walking away from this, I’m enjoying it too much. And I’ve got a lot of investment here. I’m not walking away from it.

If something were to happen to me this (regeneration) would give the club time to transition, whether it’s through a child of mine or someone else who gives it time without faltering. So it does futureproof the club. And it’s public, it’s a public company.

Besides the fact that I’ve said I’d leave (profits from any regeneration scheme) in the club and to the company, I don’t have a choice. I simply can’t take the money and run.

I know some people thought I was going to asset-strip it when I came, but I think I’ve proven now that I’m not. I’ve never taken one pound out of this company, quite the opposite.

I think the club has a bright future. I think the real estate opportunities of regenerating that whole area are enormous, and I’m a proponent. To think we’re having issues with the Council stuns me.

After the February decision, Renewal came out with a statement saying they’ve spent ten years securing most of the land by agreement and working on plans that will deliver 2,400 to Lewisham.

They feel let down by the decision.

What would you say to that?

They shouldn’t be. It’s simply a case of ensuring Millwall gets its fair share of the regeneration opportunity. We will create new jobs and deliver new homes if we are allowed to proceed.

JAMIE PHILPOT didn’t have much time to bask in the satisfaction of his first senior appearance at The Den last Saturday – he was back in action in the wind and rain at Jersey Road training ground on Monday afternoon.

His senior manager Neil Harris was there, too, and he saw Philpot score twice to fire Justin Skinner’s Elite Development squad to a 3-0 win over Brentford.

Kyron Farrell set up Philpot’s first goal with a free-kick that the nineteen-year-old headed past Tim Brown, before Farrell put him through again and he rounded the Brentford keeper to finish.

Midfielder Kris Twardek scored a third to seal the win.

Skinner’s U21s are second in Professional Development League 2,

eight points behind Charlton but with a game in hand.

“The most important thing was the three points to push us closer to top spot in our league,” Philpot said. “I should have got a hat-trick, but I’m happy with two goals.

“We’ve a good chance of winning it.”

Less than 48 hours earlier, Philpot was coming on for Steve Morison in front almost 10,000 people at The Den. His parents, Jeremy and Monica, were present to watch their son make his first senior competitive appearance at home, and Philpot revealed it wasn’t all pats on the back from his father.

“They were delighted that I came on,” Philpot said. “But my dad was winding me up telling me I should have scored.

But they’re happy for me, happy where I am at the moment and ecstatic like I am for the opportunities that I’m getting.”

Philpot scored on his debut at Wolves last season and, though he couldn’t repeat it on his home bow, he was thrilled to be

involved.

“From the time Moro scored the penalty I turned around straight away and thought, ‘Bring me on’,” he said.

“I got out of my kit really quickly and just wanted to make an impact.

“After I came on there were opportunities for me to score, I got into the right positions. There was a corner from Jed Wallace, another really good delivery, and I connected with it alright and hit it goalwards but the keeper saved it.

“It wasn’t meant to be. Not on my home debut anyway.

“But I’m looking forward to the next few games now to see if I can come on and make another impact.

“It’s completely different to the U21s. I was more excited than nervous, especially playing in front of the home fans. I wanted to show them what I can do and the next step is to score in front of them.”

Harris wants to secure defender’s future

MILLWALL ARE keen to exercise an option in Mahlon Romeo’s contract to secure his future at the club.

The 20-year-old, released by Gillingham last season, was Neil Harris’ first permanent signing as manager. Romeo penned a one-year contract after impressing Harris and academy boss Scott Fitzgerald during a trial spell last April.

Romeo was expected to spend a season with the U21s, but after injuries to Carlos Edwards and

Shaun Cummings he exploded onto the first-team scene with a superb goal in the 3-0 win at Walsall in February.

He kept his place when Edwards returned from injury and has now played in seven consecutive games and formed an impressive partnership on the right side of Millwall’s team with Jed Wallace.

That form is attracting admiring glances from potential suitors, and Millwall now want to tie down the defender to a longer deal and head off any interest from some of the bigger clubs.

Ben Thompson and Sid Nelson have all signed new deals this season, and boss Neil Harris explained the club policy behind contract offers to younger players.

“Mahlon is under contract until this summer and we have an option to extend it,” Harris said.

“Mahlon has come in and done really well so we’re looking to have discussions with his advisers to think about tying him down a little longer.

“You want to protect your assets and you want to reward players for doing well.

MILLWALL CLUB captain Tony Craig could return to full first-team training in two weeks.

Craig, 30, has been out since he injured ligaments in his left knee in the 0-0 draw with Bradford on October 31.

Craig was assessed in February by the surgeon who performed the operation in November to repair the damage, and the club expect further tests to confirm that he can re-join first-team training sessions.

If there are no setbacks, Craig will take part in full training later this month with a view to a return to competitive action in mid-April.

The news would be a huge boost, as Craig’s leadership and experience of play-offs could be crucial with it looking increasingly likely Millwall will have to negotiate that route back to the Championship.

Meanwhile, Carlos Edwards will have the injury he picked up in the 3-0 win over Blackpool last weekend assessed before this weekend’s trip to Swindon.

Edwards was only returning to action after twelve games out with a hamstring problem he suffered against Barnsley on January 2.

He started at left-back against the Tangerines and linked up impressively with Shane Ferguson before departing in the 65th minute.

“He’s not training at the moment. We’ll have to see if he can get on the training pitch on Friday and we’ll have to monitor him up to the weekend,”Neil Harris said. and that’s all we’re trying to do. We try to be sensible with what we do.

“If players do well they should be rewarded.

“I think we’ve shown with all the other young lads that if they break into the first team and do well they get rewarded.

“Until they do that, then they’re U21 players and they have to earn the right to get into the first team.

But Mahlon has done really well, as did Fred, Aiden, Ben and Sid earlier in the season when they all got awarded new contracts.

“Mahlon comes into that category at the moment.”

DOCKERS’ DAY

The annual Dockers’ Day celebration will be held on April 9 before Millwall’s home game with Shrewsbury Town.

Twenty lucky dockers will get a VIP day out, courtesy of sponsors, Southwark News.

The 1990-91 FA Youth Cup winning squad have been invited to take part in the celebrations.
