A DISTRAUGHT 71-yearold grandmother who has spent years seeking compensation for her damaged kitchen has been deemed a “potentially violent” threat by Southwark Council.

Rose Neale was forced to spend her entire life’s savings repairing her council home’s

kitchen when it was damaged by a leak. She has been trying in vain to get reimbursed since 2012, but to no avail.

After years of frustration, she recently swore while speaking to a housing officer, prompting the warning from the council - who said that they fear for the safety of their staff.

It’s madness to cut mental health centres

A

S THE election looms all the main parties are making promises on how they will protect our NHS however little mention is made of the often neglected issue of mental health.

With a staggering 29,000 people in our borough alone facing mental health issues, this must be a priority when any discussion is had on securing the future of our health service.

To suffer from mental health problems is an illness like any other, but for too long it has been the poor relation to physical illness. Yet surely the brain is like any other organ and can be affected? The complexities of the brain make it very hard to diagnose problems and often impossible to repair entirely.

Perhaps the stigma that still prevails is a result of fear, but for one minute put yourself in the position of those suffering with mental health issues and their families. Like any illness, prevention and early intervention is obviously just as important, if not more so, than simply trying to manage the consequences of the illness.

So to close three centres in Southwark at time when other frontline services are cut is madness.

Michelle Baharier - who is running Walworth based mental health charity CoolTan Arts (and is hanging on in there but has still had to let go of four of her staff) illustrated the point perfectly when she told our reporter that to keep a patient in hospital cost £2,000 a week and to put someone on one of their programmes for a year was £3,000.

Since south London’s main psychiatric hospital, the Maudsley, closed its A&E in 2007 there has been a massive demand on the A&E at King’s across the road. So having cut the emergency resource for those in dire straits when suffering from mental health problems we are now going a step further in cutting the centres that have done such a great job in preventing so many from becoming emergency cases.

The new personal budgets work is farcical when you consider more horrifying statistics from Michelle Baharier, who says that since it was introduced 50 per cent of people on her books went back into hospital within three months and ten per cent tragically killed themselves.

Right is wrong

OUTHWARK COUNCIL is right to draw attention to the problem being caused by Right to Buy where is the incentive for local authorities to build social housing if it has to give it all away at massive discounts?

In a bid to circumvent the government’s increased discounts - and a likely flood of tenants eager to cash in - some councils have looked at setting up their own housing companies, to build and manage new homes, and exclude tenants from Right to Buy. Unsurprisingly, the government has got wind of this and is stepping in.

The days when Margaret Thatcher prioritised home ownership are surely long gone - the biggest issue facing London is a lack of affordable housing. If councils are having to find the money to build this housing, then they shouldn’t be expected to sell it off cheap - and needy tenants shouldn’t expect to be allowed to.

Don’t get r id o f o u r crane, it lifts our spirits

HUNDREDS OF people have signed a petition calling for the protection of a historic crane in Rotherhithe, described as a “landmark” of the area’s rich docking history.

The crane, a Scotch Derrick dating back to the 1930s, is in danger of being dismantled after Southwark Council conceded the land to developers last year.

David Murphy, organiser of the petition, is determined to make sure that the area does not lose Surrey Dock’s last remaining crane as part of any development.

He said: “Everyone loves the crane, it’s a part of the area’s identity. I’ve even spoken to people across the water who say that it wouldn’t be the same waking up in the morning and not seeing the big red crane.”

The crane may be removed as part of plans to extend the Thames Path, but David feels that the opinions of

local people should take precedent.

He said: “There is a backlog of cynicism with local democracy over what has happened in the Downtown area over the past few years. This is now a step too far.”

He urged people to sign the petition and make clear how important the crane is to Rotherhithe.

He said: “Please send letters to the Southwark News with your memories and anecdotes of the crane.

crane has had in real, working lives of Rotherhithe people. Once local land and heritage is gone, it’s gone for good.”

Ian Cooper, a Rotherhithe resident whose house looks out over the crane, said: “It would be a shame to see it go.

I’m all for redevelopment, but in an ideal world any changes would incorporate and include the crane.”

A council spokesperson said: “In December 2014, Cabinet resolved to transfer the land at 1 – 3 Odessa Street, on which the crane sits. This

was to enable a key extension of the Thames River Path to take place.

“This will result in the removal of the crane referred to in the petition, however the purchaser of the land has agreed to make the crane available to a historical organisation if there is one that can accommodate and maintain the structure. A public consultation will be held as part of the planning process for future use of the site.”

A WAR hero’s family is being tracked down in the hope they can attend a commemoration to his bravery in World War One.

Walworth-born Lance Sergeant Frank Edward Stubbs was awarded the Victoria Cross (VC) medal in 1917, two years after his act of astounding courage on the beaches of Gallipoli one hundred years ago.

On April 25, 1915, four companies of the Lancashire Fusiliers were ordered to land just south of Cape Tekke in Turkey on a narrow stretch of beach hemmed in by steep cliffs.

Turkish forces had set up three rows of wire along the shore and they lay hidden on the cliff tops above, ready to shower the British troops in waves of gunfire as they approached.

Against all the odds, Frank Stubbs was in one of two British companies who managed to cut through the wire and attack and capture the Turkish positions.

He was killed shortly afterwards but was said to have distinguished himself in that bloody battle. He was buried in Gallipoli and his Victoria Cross is held at the Fusiliers Museum in Bury, Lancashire.

Of the 1,000 men who stormed the beaches that day, only 400 came out alive. The Major in charge recommended six men for commendations, but only four, including Stubbs, were awarded for a collective act of gallantry two years later.

As part of a national scheme to commemorate Wold War One soldiers who were awarded the VC medal, a paving stone bearing Frank’s name will be laid in Chapter Road, Walworth, the street where he was born in 1888.

Southwark Council is now searching for any surviving relatives of the war hero, who was born to Francis Stubbs, a clerk at Her Majesty’s stationers’ office, and Lucy Ann Stubbs (nee Lewisham), so they can be invited to attend the ceremony on April 24.

In August last year, Frederick Holmes was the first Southwark soldier to be commemorated with the new paving stones at a ceremony in Abbey Street, Bermondsey.

Service records describe how, whilst under heavy enemy fire and with no thought for his own life, Fred scooped an injured bugler over his shoulder and carried him to safety, dodging German shells and bullets all the while.

captured by the enemy by attaching it to a horse and galloping with it through the war torn fields back to British territory.

Sadly, by 1922, he had been forced to sell his VC medal along with a scrapbook telling of his exploits, in order to save his wife and four children from the workhouse.

Corporal Arthur Henry Cross, of the Machine Gun Corps, was awarded a VC after he stormed an enemy trench armed only with a revolver and forced seven Germans to surrender and carry guns to the British lines. He was also forced into poverty on his return home to the slums of Trinity Buildings in Borough. When he and his family were invited to Buckingham Palace by the King, Arthur’s poor wife was mortified that she could not afford a new pair of shoes for the occasion. A sympathetic reader of the Daily News, where his plight was covered, sent her a pair so the family could go to the royal garden party.

Eleven Southwark men were honoured with a VC for “valour in the face of the enemy,” and the streets where they lived will all be paved with their names 100 years after they were awarded their medal.

THE FOUNDER of a charity for housing homeless ex-service personnel has said he is “ashamed” to come from Southwark, after the third soldier in a row they have taken to the council has been left on the streets.

Benjamin Redges served in the forces for nine years and has been working as a civil servant since he left in 2011.

He was made homeless on Good Friday, when the family he had been staying with in East Dulwich for the last five years moved away to a new, much smaller home.

Benjamin went to Southwark Council's housing office in Bournemouth Road, Peckham, on March 18 and told them he would be out on the streets at the end of the month.

He says he was then told that because he is in employment and is not vulnerable he does not qualify for emergency accommodation so Benjamin turned to Rotherhithebased charity Homes4Heroes instead.

Charity founder Jimmy Jukes advised him to go back to the housing office and tell them that in May last year, new rules came in to effect which promised to prioritise ex-service personnel for social housing.

On March 25 Benjamin, 46, returned but said staff were unaware of the military covenant and said he was still not a priority because he is not vulnerable and his thirteen-year-old son is not currently living with him.

"He's a proud man and he's served his country. I think it's disgusting," said Jimmy.

Benjamin had to spend the Easter weekend sleeping in his car until Jimmy and partner Michelle Thorpe could get him into a B&B. "All I'm asking for is an affordable place where I can support myself. I don't need benefits because I've got a job," said Benjamin.

"I want to keep working for the nation. I don't want to depend on anybody. I don't need anything, just a roof for me and my son," added the former army supply controller.

Jimmy and Michelle say this is the third time Southwark Council has turned away homeless exservicemen in the last year and a half.

"I'm ashamed to say I was born in Southwark because they don't care about our ex service personnel."They're failing our boys and girls,” said Jimmy,who is now going to use charity funds to get Benjamin into some emergency accommodation and put a deposit down on a flat.

"We're not going out have him staying in his car when it's freezing at night," said Michelle. "It breaks your heart."

CHEERS WENT up as more than a hundred campaigners descended on the Aylesbury last week and ripped down the eight foot high security fences enclosing part of the estate.

Residents who do not want to leave their homes joined protesters on a march from Burgess Park on Thursday evening, calling on the council to halt demolition of the social housing blocks.

When the hundred-strong crowd reached Albany Road, where the makeshift walls caused tenants to rename their estate Alcatraz, masked protestors tied ropes around the barbed fences and pulled them down, revealing ranks of baffled security guards behind.

Aysen Dennis, 56, who has been a tenant in Wendover block for 22 years, went on the march and witnessed the fences coming down.

“It felt great,” she said. “It was a great victory that our demo ended with glory.

Everybody cheered and kept shouting ‘Repopulate the Aylesbury estate’.

“It should be pulled down because we don’t know why the council has spent nearly £150,000 putting these fences up. In the middle of London in the 21st century it’s like Gaza. It’s not acceptable and they should be pulled down,” she added.

Fellow resident, Victoria Briben, who has lived in Taplow block for 21 years, said many residents on the estate supported the campaigners because they did not want to move from their homes. “I’m panicking about what’s going to happen to me,” said the 53-

year-old, who also went on the march.

“It was nice to see these people coming to support us.

“I’m upset by what the council are doing to us. They want to take our homes. The whole thing is very sad, thinking that one day I will have to leave,” she said.

The action came on the same day the council took some of the campaigners to court, to evict those who had been squatting in the Chiltern block as part of the protest.

Councillor Mark Williams, Southwark’s cabinet member for regeneration, planning and transport, said: "Those squatting on the estate weren’t speaking for our residents and were attempting to block the development of the very homes they claim to be campaigning for.”

He declared that the regeneration of the estate including “new high quality homes, open spaces and community facilities” would continue.

In the meantime, Cllr Williams remains adamant that the security fences are needed to keep residents living in half empty blocks safe.

“The fence was put up following requests from the few remaining residents on this first development site, to stop anti social behaviour and keep residents safe,” he said, though residents speaking to the News previously said they were unhappy with the council’s solution to their security fears.

The council repaired the fence over the weekend and says it is still reviewing the access arrangements in light of some frustrations voiced by residents unable to gain access to their properties or receive visitors.

A PARLIAMENTARY candidate says he has been denied the “normal democratic process” after he was kept off the Aylesbury by its fences and full time security guards.

Nick Wrack, the Trade Union and Socialist Coalition (TUSC) and Left Unity candidate for Camberwell and Peckham said he was refused access to the Walworth estate by the guards at the gates when he was leafleting in the area last week. “I was told that I had to obtain permission from Southwark Council to go on to the blocks to canvass,” he said.

A 71-year-old woman who is desperately seeking compensation for her damaged kitchen has been warned by Southwark Council that she may be put on their “Violent Caution” register.

Rose Neale was forced to spend her entire life’s savings repairing her council home’s kitchen when it was damaged by a leak and she became frustrated with the lack of response from Southwark. She has been trying in vain to get reimbursed since 2012.

The News highlighted her plight three weeks ago, which prompted a response from Cllr Mark Williams, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Planning and Transport that he would be “happy to meet with her personally” to discuss the situation.

Instead, Rose was shocked and distraught when she was simply sent a letter that rejected her appeal and threatened her with inclusion on the Violent Caution register.

This register “acts as a warning for staff and contractors where they may be at risk when visiting residents,” according to the letter from a housing officer.

was made after the distressed pensioner swore on the phone to a council officer last month.

“I had just got back home after visiting the council’s offices in Tooley Street where I was meant to have a meeting with a housing officer. They didn’t turn up and I just couldn’t believe it. I rang them up and they tried to convince me that I was wrong.”

The letter also states that the two officers who Rose claims promised to reimburse her have both now left the council. It also denies that Rose sent in

the correct claim forms.

Rose said: “I have gone back and forth with them for years now. I’ve sent in receipts, letters, everything. It’s just a joke - and now they are claiming I’m a danger to them! I don’t know what to do.”

Councillor Richard Livingstone, Southwark’s cabinet member for housing, said: “I understand that Ms Neal is upset about her kitchen but we did need to make her aware that swearing at staff isn’t going to sort out the issue.

“We’re doing our best to work towards an amicable solution and I’m still very happy to meet with Ms Neal if this would be helpful.”

Council slams minister over right to buy

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL has slammed government plans to stop local authorities side-stepping the right to buy scheme, which allows council tenants to buy their properties.

After it was predicted the borough would lose nearly 10,000 council homes to the Margaret Thatcherintroduced policy over the next 30 years, Southwark, along with other

local authorities, started taking steps to limit the damage.

But when housing minister, Brandon Lewis, got wind that some councils were plotting to set up their own housing companies to build and manage new homes, he said in a public statement that he would not support their plans.

Tenants of the new housing companies would not be eligible for Right to Buy as they would not be considered council tenants, despite the council-owned company acting as

landlord.

“The actions of a handful of councils mean the Right to Buy for some tenants is now under threat – I will not support any council setting up a housing company unless their tenants continue to have the chance of having a Right to Buy,” said Mr Lewis on March 20.

Southwark Council leader, Peter John (pictured), hit back saying the government’s ever increasing discounts offered for Right to Buy were “undermining” the council’s ability to build new homes.

“At a time when London is facing a housing crisis, with growing numbers of people on council waiting lists, the government is pushing ahead with its plans to sell off council housing at an even greater rate.

This is hardly the “localism in action” that ministers claim to be seeking,” said Cllr John.

“Any home we build can now be sold immediately to its new tenant at a £103,900

discount.”

The government is increasing the discount offered to council tenants to buy their properties in line with inflation every year and has also reduced the length of time the tenant needs to have been living in the property from five years to three.

Southwark Council says it has lost 250 homes to Right to Buy this year and expects the number to increase further with the recent changes.

KEEP-FIT fanatics are to be charged for exercising in the borough’s parks, in a move that has been slammed as a “grubby grabfor-cash” and a “tax on outdoor activity and staying fit.”

Until now, fitness fans have been able to use green spaces across Southwark to keep in shape for free. However, new fees being introduced will see exercise groups charged between £680 and £1100 per year, while personal trainers will have to pay between £280 and £480.

Southwark Lib-Dems leisure spokesperson Lisa Rajan said that these fees were “outrageous” given the high rates of obesity and heart problems in the borough. She said: “We should be encouraging people to exercise, not

penalising them. This is a tax on outdoor exercise and staying fit. This is supposed to be a council that believes in free swimming and gym for all but these new fees go totally against that. This looks like nothing more than a grubby grab-forcash.”

Stephanie Henderson, trainer for the Russia Dock Woodlands-based Bootcamp SE16 fitness group, told the News that she agreed with the policy but not with the fees themselves, which she described as “a hell of a lot of money.”

She said: “Overcrowding can be an issue in the park, and sometimes members of the public get a bit annoyed at us. While we have a great partnership with the amazing Friends of Russia Dock Woodlands group, the fees would let us say a little more strongly that we belong here. I think introducing fees is fair and I’m more than happy to pay.”

However, the personal trainer was taken aback by the cost of the proposed fees.

She said: “It is quite a lot more than I

thought it would be. That’s a hell of a lot of money, and I definitely wouldn’t be able to pay it in one go. I charge my group very reasonable fees to take part, and only recently upped them to help provide a better service. The new fees would make things difficult.”

Cllr Barrie Hargrove, cabinet member for public health, parks and leisure said: “The claims that Southwark Council is charging any residents who use outdoor gyms and park spaces for exercise is untrue. The new fees that have been brought in only apply to commercial businesses who charge their customers for their service and have been put in place to regulate usage and help fund the inevitable additional wear and tear these can have on park facilities, much like other neighbouring councils have already done.

“We as a council continue to support our residents to get active and make the most of the outdoor gyms and green spaces we maintain for them. For group exercise, other park activities which are not for profit, such as park runs and charity events, will continue to be free.”

One thousand truckloads of contamined waste in cemetery

A THOUSAND truckloads of contaminated waste will be treated and then shipped out of a cemetery woodland, according to a campaign group.

Save Southwark Woods protestors have been at loggerheads with the council since plans were revealed to clear areas of woodland across the borough’s cemeteries to create new burial spaces.

A new battleground grew out of a meeting between campaigners and the council last week, where a commitment to clear thousands of tonnes of illegally-dumped construction waste from Camberwell Old Cemetery were detailed.

Blanche Cameron of Save Southwark Woods condemned the plans as “appalling”, saying the group estimated a thousand truck loads of waste would need to pass through Honor Oak to complete the work.

“Why is the council even considering this appalling approach?” she said.

“Fifteen years of woodlands have grown up since the illegal dumping.

Imagine the impact and the pollution it’s going to have.”

Save Southwark Woods has proposed instead that the council cover over the contaminated material and plant more woodland on top.

A council spokesperson said it had always remained committed to clearing the waste from the site because it exceeded contamination levels considered safe for public access.

In a special feature in the News last month, Cllr Darren Merrill, Southwark’s cabinet member for environment and community safety, said the council would press on with plans to create new burial spaces in the borough for those who wanted them.

He said: “It’s just common decency.

If someone’s last wish was to be buried we want to provide that.

“The deprived areas tend to be more religious. They would want to give their loved ones their last wish and if we are able to provide it I think we have a moral duty to do it.”

Fears over road safety after three-car collision in Rotherhithe

A ROTHERHITHE resident fears it is “only a matter of time” before another tragic accident occurs in Rotherhithe New Road, following a three-car collision last Friday.

The incident came just months after an elderly woman was crushed to

death by a tipper lorry in the same section of road, a gruesome incident that shocked residents, including Silverlock Estate tenant Karen Connolly.

Karen lives in a flat overlooking the road and believes the problem is due to the close proximity of the roundabout exit and the pedestrian crossing.

Karen witnessed the aftermath of the tragic accident last November when an elderly woman was killed.

Karen said: “It shouldn’t have happened and something needs to be done.”

A man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He has not been charged and is on police bail until mid-April.

Councillor Mark Williams, Southwark’s cabinet member for regeneration, planning and transport, said: “I am saddened to learn of last week’s collision. While works were carried out last year to improve road safety at the Rotherhithe New Road roundabout, we’ll be carrying out an urgent review to see if there’s anything more that can be done to improve matters.”

A MAN has been charged with criminal damage after a vehicle veered off the road in the early hours of Thursday morning and crashed into a shop front.

The police have confirmed they

were called just after 3am on April 2 to reports that a car had collided into a shop-front on Old Kent Road, near the junction with East Street.

Officers arrived at the scene and arrested 32-year-old Martin Parkers, of Anglesey Road, Staffordshire, for driving-related offences. He was taken to a south London police

station and subsequently charged with driving while disqualified, driving with no insurance, driving without due care and attention and criminal damage.

No injuries were reported and the London Ambulance Service has confirmed they were not called to the scene.

DAME TESSA Jowell has slammed the growing number of children living in temporary accommodation as “a private tragedy and a public disgrace” for Southwark.

The borough is now home to over 1,000 homeless children, according to “heartbreaking” new statistics highlighted by the politican, who is standing down as Dulwich and West Norwood MP at the upcoming general election.

There are 1,237 children living in temporary accommodation such as hostels or B&Bs - a huge 40% increase from 882 two years ago.

This means that one in every 50 Southwark kids do not have the security and comfort of a permanent home.

Ms Jowell said: “It’s heartbreaking to see so many children in Southwark growing up without the basic necessity of their own home.

Inequality is robbing these children of their childhood.

“What children need above all is stability, but that's extremely hard to come by in temporary accommodation. Cramped living conditions, stressed parents and the endless, day-to-day uncertainty of homelessness can do untold damage to children at just the time when they most benefit from a safe environment.”

Kate Webb, head of policy for housing charity Shelter, agreed.

She told the News: “No child should have to go through the trauma of homelessness and it’s heart-breaking to see such a dramatic rise in the number of children living in

temporary accommodation, both in Southwark and across the capital.

“Every day at Shelter we speak to homeless parents having to raise their children in a place that offers no stability, leaving many experiencing severe emotional distress, facing three hour round trips to school and having to eat their dinner on the floor.

Councillor Richard Livingstone, Southwark’s cabinet member for housing, blamed the problem on “changes to welfare provision and the downside of the privately rented sector.”He said: “To help address this, we are opening new temporary accommodation over the summer at Willow Walk, D’Eynsford Estate and at Waterloo Road. Longer term, we’ve embarked on an ambitious home building programme which will see 11,000 high quality and affordable homes built for local people by 2043, with the first 1,500 complete by 2018.”

“THERE’LL BE a number of people who will take their lives” is the stark message coming from the leader of a mental health charity in Southwark as three day centres close in the same month.

With changes to the way mental health services are funded, the end of the financial year last week called curtains on centres across the borough where people have been going for support for twenty years on some occasions.

Marie Robertson has been taking her son to the Opendoor Resource Centre in Jamaica Road, Bermondsey, for some twenty years and says he is ‘very upset’ at the closure last week.

“Some people are saying they are going to kill themselves,” said the 69year-old full time carer.

“They’re distraught some of them. It’s their family - they haven’t got anyone else because a lot live on their own.”

Around 70 people regularly attend the centre, with many anxious when it closes for a bank holiday. “They go there and chat with each other and help each other out,” said Marie. “Any problems they’ve got they’ve always got someone to help them.”

Liberal Democrat councillor, Eliza Mann, whose Riverside ward is where the centre is based, said: “These day centres carry out incredible work with some of the most vulnerable members of our community. It is outrageous that they will be forced to close their doors at the end of the month because their funding suddenly runs out.

“The issue is not just that there is a lack of funding out there, but that they also don’t know who to turn to for help or support. These users feel the CCG [Clinical Commissioning Group] and the Labour council are just not listening and

are dictating the services they want to see provided, rather than asking these users.”

The way mental health services are funded has changed dramatically over the last few years, with money taken away from services and given directly to service users in the form of personal budgets.

The idea is that everyone has the choice of what services they buy, giving them a tailored package of activities or therapies suited to their needs.

But those on the front line of mental health services in Southwark are warning that not enough people are eligible for personal budgets; those who are don’t get enough to afford what they need and the services they want to buy may have closed due to the cuts.

Jo Claire, of The Crossways Centre in Peckham, which also closed last month, said less than ten people out of the 140 who used the centre had personal budgets, leaving most of them with nowhere to go.

“We are worried,” she said, “mostly about people we know we’ve kept out of mental health services because they’ve had Crossways.

“No one has the responsibility to look after those people now and they have nowhere to go” Victor Logan, 59, a spokesman for Southwark Mental Health Service Users, attended the Lorrimore Centre in Camberwell for several years until it also closed last week, which he said was like “a kick in the head when you’re down.”

“The danger is that people will have nowhere to go and they’ll turn to drink and drugs and instead of getting better they’ll get worse.

“I think it’s time that people knew the damage that’s being done,” he told the News.

Since the personal budgets were first introduced in 2011, Michelle says 50 per cent of people on her books went back into hospital within three months and ten percent tragically killed themselves.

With the latest closures of centres across the borough, Michelle said: “There’ll be a number of people who will take their lives. We are already seeing people who have lost weight.

“We’ll lose them through self neglect and nobody will know they’re not well.”

Southwark Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), who allocate funding for mental health services in the borough, are setting up a new Wellbeing Hub, which is due to open in Peckham in May and will give advice and guidance on what kind of services are available to people in the borough. In the meantime, a spokesperson for the CCG and Southwark Council said those affected were receiving information about alternative support available locally.

“We recognise that changes we are making in the way mental health services are funded will result in a small number of people accessing support from services they have not previously used.

“When we speak to local people we hear frequently that the way mental health services work in Southwark hasn’t changed for many years and that we need to move away from a ‘one-size fits all’ approach. The work we have done to make services more responsive to individual needs has been driven by the people using local services and professionals who work in them, who want people to be in control of their care.

“We are confident that the variety of services available in the borough means that the right support for each individual is in place and we are committed to helping people to get the care they need to achieve independence and recovery.”

From Tuesday, May 5, the new Southwark Wellbeing Hub will be available for information and advice at Thames-reach Employment Academy in Peckham Road. BOROUGH: Twenty-five years after receiving a life-saving kidney transplant, artist Ted Harrison returned to Guy’s Hospital to unveil a new artwork in honour of organ donors.

He said: “I was never told the name of my donor but I have corresponded with their family anonymously. I’m hugely pleased to have the chance to express in art my gratitude to the donor – the friend I never knew.”

Borough home to fifth of all patients suffering from deadly disease

PIONEERING NEW research could help to prevent baby deaths in Southwark, after it was revealed the borough is home to a fifth of all patients suffering from a deadly blood disorder in the UK.

The Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Trust (GSTT) estimates 30 percent of all babies born to mothers with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) in the UK are delivered in Southwark, so it has led a new study into the hereditary blood disorder’s effects on pregnancy.

There are around 15,000 patients in the UK suffering from the disease, in which red blood cells are deformed into a sickle shape and an astonishing 3,000 of these live in Southwark.

The new research shows that women with a severe form of the disease are six times more likely to die during or after pregnancy, with an increased risk of stillbirth and premature birth.

Dr Eugene Oteng-Ntim, consultant obstetrician at Guy’s and St Thomas’ and co-author of the study, is hopeful the

“We finally have some robust data that doctors and obstetricians around the world can refer to, enabling them to give the best care they can to mothers and babies. This analysis is a first step toward improving universal care for all who suffer from this disease.”

Researchers from GSTT studied 26,349 pregnant women with SCD and 26,151,746 pregnant women who shared common attributes with SCD patients like ethnicity, but were healthy.

The study is the first to confirm the health risks facing pregnant women with SCD in their study and was published last week in Blood, the Journal of the American Society of Hematology.

Disease can cause pain and death SICKLE CELL Disease is a hereditary blood disorder, which can lead to strokes, severe infections and death and is prevalent in ethnic minority communities.

The 300,000 babies worldwide born every year with the disease produce abnormal haemoglobin, a protein that helps carry oxygen throughout the body.

Normal red blood cells are flexible and disc-shaped, but a defect causes them to become rigid and shaped like a crescent (or sickle) instead, blocking the flow of blood and oxygen to the body and causing intense pain and other complications. The disorder mainly affects people of African, Caribbean, Middle Eastern, Eastern Mediterranean and Asian origin. In the UK, sickle cell disorders are most commonly seen in African and Caribbean people.

Candidates named for ward by-election

THE CANDIDATES hoping to fill the vacant councillor position in Chaucer ward have been announced, following the controversial resignation of Labour councillor Claire Maugham last month.

Labour has chosen Helen Dennis, while William Houngbo was announced as the Liberal-Democrats’ candidate. Dean Conway will run for UKIP and Piers Corbyn will stand as an independent, although he is being endorsed by the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition.

Anti-poverty campaigner Dennis said she wanted “to work to improve local housing, create more jobs and apprenticeships, and get better transport links.” The Labour candidate added: “I will fight to support local people dealing with the Bedroom Tax that local Liberal Democrats have supported. And I will work to deliver a secondary school in the north of the borough.”

Houngbo, a ward resident in the Lawson Estate, said he was “honoured” to be standing for the Liberal Democrats and credited parliamentary candidate Simon Hughes as his “role model.”

He said: “With Simon, I am fighting for new jobs from building the Bakerloo Line extension down the New Kent

Road, for affordable homes in every new development and for mental health to be given the same priority as physical health.”

Piers Corbyn, a former Labour councillor in Burgess ward and brother to Islington North MP Jeremy Corbyn, announced he will run as an independent on an “anti-social cleansing” drive.

He said: “I’m running to get into the town hall and to stop the social cleansing in Southwark put forward by the atrocious, treacherous Labour council.

Major parties offer nothing but lies. I am confident I can win, and I must say I have been astounded at the level of support.”

Security officer Dean Conway slammed the controversial nature of Claire Maugham’s resignation and the need for a by-election, which he said cost Southwark people £12,000.

He added: “I am delighted to offer Chaucer voters the chance to get a better, fairer deal from their local council representative than all the tired old political parties can offer after so much of their failure.”

The News exclusively revealed last month that Claire Maugham stepped down following fierce internal criticism from the Labour hierarchy, after her husband wrote a letter critical of the councils’ housing policy to the paper.

The deadline for candidates is today.

Southwark has worst knife crime clear-up rate in the capital

SOUTHWARK HAS the worst record in London for solving knife crimes, new figures have revealed.

Just sixteen percent of knife crimes causing injury in the borough led to the perpetrators being caught and charged between 2013 and 2014.

The figure dropped from nineteen percent the previous year, leaving Southwark as the worst performing borough in London.

Southwark’s neighbours achieved much better results, with Lambeth’s clear-up rate hitting 23 percent and Lewisham achieving 29 percent. The average across London was 25 percent The figures were revealed in a response to a question put to London Mayor, Boris Johnson by Liberal Democrat London Assembly Member, Caroline Pidgeon.

Southwark Liberal Democrat councillors then raised the issue at the last meeting of the full council Councillor David Hubber,

Southwark Liberal Democrat’s spokesperson for community safety, said the figures were “not good enough.” “Every week we see new incidents involving knives in the borough.... It’s time to look at new ways of working with community groups and other councils to tackle the scourge of knives on Southwark’s streets,” he said.

A spokesperson for the Met police said in the last year knife crime had reduced by twenty percent in the borough.

“However, we are not complacent and remain committed to reducing the number of victims of knife crime across the borough of Southwark as well as catching those responsible for violence and disruption,” they said.

A London-wide police operation called Equinox has seen plain clothed police officers patrol violence hotspots to reduce all offences which cause an injury and the Safer Neighbourhood Teams have been conducting regular patrols to combat knife crime and tackle people who carry knives.

“We are aware that there is still more

we need to do as the potential consequences of every knife crime offence can be devastating,” added the spokesperson.

“The issue of knife crime remains a matter not only for police, but also for all of those who can play a part in preventing it which includes young people, their parents and other agencies. We remain committed to thoroughly investigate cases reported to us and ensuring that those responsible are brought before a court.”

Charity to hand-out £500k of grants

SOUTHWARK: One of Southwark’s oldest charities has announced that it will provide grants totalling £500,000 for community groups in the north of the borough.

United St Saviour’s Charity will provide financial support for thirteen organisations, from £10,000 for UK Homes for Heroes to £80,000 for Age Southwark & Lewisham. A NEW all-female Australian Rules Football team, which trains in Peckham Rye, will compete in London’s first ever women’s league this month.

The South East London Giants Australian Rules football club have a brand new women’s team of 25 players that will compete in the first round of the Women's Australian Football League (AFL) on April 25.

The league started after AFL London organised an exhibition match for any women that were interested in playing last August.

The Giants’ ladies coach, Marianna Graham, was at the exhibition match and decided to approach the organisers to set up a women’s AFL league.

Marianna, who moved to London from Australia twelve years ago, said: “There are plenty of girls out there that want to give this a go and it's not just the Australian girls that are trying AFL out. There are lots of girls with Gaelic Football and rugby backgrounds that are enjoying the physicality of the

game.

“This is the first year so it's going to be a challenging year but very rewarding by the end of it and hopefully allow us to set up a legacy for the future.”

There are now four AFL women’s teams in the London Leagues but there has been women’s Australian football being played in England unofficially for a few years.

Over the years there has been a growing interest in AFL and in 2014 England’s first national women’s team, the Vixens, won silver at Axios AFL Euro cup.

The first round of the Women's AFL league commences on April 25 with the Giants playing North London Lions at home in Peckham Rye and will run all the way to August.

Patient is Evelina’s poster girl SOUTHWARK: A nine-year-old patient at Evelina Children’s Hospital is urging visitors to stub it out after winning a poster competition to promote the hospital’s new anti-smoking policy.

Smoking will be banned across the entire premises at Evelina as well as every other Guy’s and St Thomas’ Trust site from June 19.

Brave Khadija Hussein said: “I don’t like smoking because it’s not good for your body. I want to help people to stop.”

Magicians teach children with partial paralysis

CHILDREN SUFFERING from partial paralysis are taking part in a two week magic camp to learn new tricks to tackle their disability.

Magic Circle magicians have joined Specialist Paediatric Therapists at Draper Tenants' Hall at the Elephant to help kids with hemiplegia - a paralysis affecting largely one side of the body.

The team, led by Southwark-based not for profit company, Breathe Arts Health Research, taught the micromagicians tricks which incorporated movements to build strength and dexterity in their affected hands and arms and impress an audience.

British TV magician Dynamo is a keen supporter of Breathe and visited the programme last year. He said: "I can't think of a better way to use magic than to improve the quality of young people’s lives."

The camp culminates on April 11 in a magic show, where the children will perform their two-handed tricks alongside the pros at a London theatre.

Prostate cancer survivor urges black men to get tested GUY’S AND St Thomas’ diagnoses more than 1,000 men with prostate cancer each year – a third are black men.

To raise awareness of the condition, Dylan Nelson, who was diagnosed and treated for prostate cancer at Guy’s Hospital in 2014, is urging the capital’s black men to come forward for testing.

In the UK, black AfricanCaribbean men are almost four times more likely to be affected by prostate cancer, often at an earlier age.

Dylan, 47, says: “It is important for

us guys to take our health seriously, in particular when it comes to prostate cancer. I would like to emphasise to all men, especially black men, how important it is to come forward for testing once you are over 45.

“The treatment I have had at Guy’s has been excellent, and I am really looking forward to continuing my treatment with the team when they move to the new Cancer Centre next year.”

When the new Cancer Centre opens at Guy’s in 2016 it will bring together most treatment and research under one roof.

Guy’s Cancer Centre Appeal will raise £15 million towards the project cost in

total – more than £5 million of which has already been raised. Donations to the appeal will help provide the finishing touches, from treatment couches and wheelchairs to privacy screens and gym equipment.

Mr Ben Challacombe, urology cancer lead at Guy’s and St Thomas’, says: “Most prostate cancer is detectable before symptoms develop and so we urge men not to put this off. Leaving it too late can have a devastating impact.”

AN INNOVATIVE water saving programme at Guy’s and St Thomas’ has reduced water consumption by nearly 20% and helped to provide access to clean and safe drinking water for some of the poorest people in the world.

The programme, carried out in partnership with water management experts ADSM, has resulted in the Trust saving £120,000 worth of water. Funded by a grant from AquaFund, a percentage of the cost savings goes to the charity WaterAid to provide safe water and sanitation in Nepal.

Alexandra Hammond, Associate Director for Sustainability, says: “By installing state-of-the-art technology, putting in new pipes, and carefully monitoring our water use, we’ve achieved significant savings in our water consumption.

THE ROYAL British Legion will join the nation in marking the 70th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day (VE Day) over the weekend of 8-10 May.

A series of national commemorative events will take place in London, and community events and celebrations are being organised across the country.

The Second World War generation will be at the heart of all activity.

As part of this, the Legion is calling out to veterans of VE Day, who would like to take part in the national commemorations in London. To ensure representation across all those who played an active role during the Second World War, the invitation is for those who served in the military, the Home Guard or in any one of the reserved occupations, including medics, police and the “Bevan Boys”.

All veterans will be allowed to be accompanied by a nominated carer.

Leaseholders fenced in on Aylesbury

I calculate that the council is spending £8k per leaseholder

WHO DO the Labour run council think they’re kidding?

A couple of weeks ago they had the bare faced cheek to say they put up Berlin wall style fences (complete with razor sharp metal)

because the few remaining leaseholders on the Aylesbury asked for them. Well that was rubbished when the leaseholders said their lives are now miserable and they feel like prisoners in Alcatraz.

Then it turned out the fences had cost a whopping one hundred and forty thousand pounds! (Aylesbury’s ‘Alcatraz’ fence cost council £140k to put up, News 2nd April, 2015) Divide that by the 18 homes still occupied and you get a bill of almost 8 grand per leaseholder.

Come on now, be serious for a moment, since when did the council ever splash that kind of money on their residents?

They think we’re dumb and cannot see the fences are simply about protecting their prize asset – an empty council estate, free from pesky residents, which they can now sell for a tidy profit, thank you very much.

am bemused by Simon Hughes' claim that he is leading the campaign to bring broadband to Rotherhithe.

My local councillors - Stephanie Cryan, Kath Whittam and Bill Williams - along with Southwark Labour, continue to lead this initiative and drive it forward. For Simon Hughes to jump on the bandwagon now and make this claim demonstrates, once again, that he has no shame.

As a junior doctor I’m concerned about the future of the NHS HEALTH CARE consistently ranks in the top three issues for voters, and the main parties have made big election promises regarding the NHS this week.

Issues facing the NHS in the next parliament are complex, but as a junior doctor in south London one of my main concerns is underfunding.

NHS services have been pushed to dangerous limits - front-line staff and patients can testify to this. Not one of the major parties will pledge to fill the projected £8bn NHS budget shortfall, and I'm so worried that patient safety and the quality of our services will suffer.

I'm afraid that due to underfunding and creeping privatisation we won't have a recognisable National Health Service in five years' time. That's why I'm campaigning with Rebecca Fox of the National Health Action Party who is standing for election in Camberwell and Peckham.

Residents lead the way HILST SOUTHWARK Council has been spending hundreds of thousands of pounds and using militarised Territorial Support Police to suppress the peaceful No Bulldozing of The Aylesbury Estate protests, my local community has been making us more eco-friendly.

Three years ago, with a few neighbours we set up a mini-Transition Town group called Greening The Triangle. It covers about 300 homes that were part of the newly formed Wells Way Triangle Residents Association (WWTRTA). We wanted to work with our neighbours to make the area eco-friendly. We launched the project with a half-day ecoconference in the local community centre. Meetings to discuss new and current projects are now held every six weeks in local peoples’ homes.

We applied to Thames Water for twenty free rain-water barrels to give to pensioners and low-waged to help reduce water-bills. A free workshop on energy efficiency was presented by a local environmental consultant and another one on renewable energy by a resident who worked for a solar company. This resulted in some residents installing efficient LED lighting, another installed solar panels and a pensioner had free insulation installed in her loft. A woodburners group was set up which sources our waste wood locally.

Last year we decided to create a ribbonorchard, which will partly offset last year’s brutal bulldozing of Camberwell Green Community Orchard by Southwark Council.

Our residents association granted us the money to buy about 30 fruit-trees.

Pear, apple, mulberry, plum, walnut and crab-apple trees were planted on Saturday morning volunteer worksessions, in little scraps of land all around the community. These included grass verges, car-parks and council estate front-gardens.

Over the last few weeks, the second layer of the ribbon-orchard is being installed. With another grant from the residents association, fruit shrubs are being planted adjacent to where the fruit trees were planted.

All of these actions are inspired by the modern concept of Permaculture which urges people to use existing resources.

Constantly bulldozing and rebuilding wastes huge amounts of resources and destroys people’s lives. Southwark Council could learn a lot from this positive local community.

The Easter Bunny with bite A STORY about a rabbit seems appropriate in the season of the Easter bunny but the Velveteen Rabbit has a resonance to the Easter story that goes deeper than this, writes Michael Holland...

It is a story about love and loss, life and death, and ultimately resurrection. The number of very small children in the audience initially concerned my teenage companions and me. I need not have worried. From the moment the narrator silently appeared on stage, his only prop a suitcase, a magical hush descended.

All around the theatre I could hear murmurs of 'please can we have a rabbit' and one of those voices belonged to my child. For a second I was almost tempted!

The versatile Anthony Weigh marvellously narrates the play. Christian Roe plays the title role with great subtlety and sensitivity; achieving extraordinary communication with the smallest of physical and facial gestures.

This is a highly physical piece of theatre portraying the relationship between a small boy and his toy rabbit with entrancing choreography.

The seemingly inseparable rabbit and owner are eventually parted by a childhood illness; and the fact that the toy has been loved almost to destruction.

The rabbit is pronounced full of germs and consigned to the bonfire. The

His rescue by a fairy, and fulfilment of his deep-seated wish to be real, was a welcome relief.

I would urge anyone to go and see this play. If you don't have a small child to take, be brave and go on your own. You won't regret it.

The same could be said for the work of Ian Chamberlain and Sachiyo Nishimura, process is fundamental to both these artists’ work and can be seen in Alignment.

In bringing these two artists together, ‘Alignment’ exhibits the artistic unity akin to the harmony of a musical duet.

Chamberlain and Nishimura’s meticulous use of etching and photographic manipulation respectively take their work on different paths but ultimately, the two paths converge. ‘Alignment’ examines the journey taken by these two artists’ work and focuses on the resultant shared intricacy.

hole books have been written about the dock strike of 1889, but seventeen years earlier casual workers facing a massive pay cut formed the first docker’s union and bravely took industrial action to put change in motion for the poorest workers, writes Amelia Burr...

In the early 1800s Surrey Commercial Docks, like many others, was staffed mainly by casual workers – with just enough men taken on each day for the available work. With ten men lining up for each job, no worker was in any position to strike. But in 1871, the East & West India Dock Co. announced a pay cut of around 25 percent, to try to rescue their falling profits.

One docker, a Mr Caulfield, organised a meeting but concluded nothing could be done. “These men are comparatively helpless in the matter,” wrote the Eastern Post. “They are so poor that a strike or even a combination with a view of joint action is not to be thought of. They can only appeal to the companies to reconsider the whole question, and ask the public to sustain their appeal.”

After two further meetings, the Labour Protection League (LPL) was established, with Caulfield as Secretary. The sole purpose of the League was to oppose the reduction in dockers’ wages, but Caulfield saw an opportunity to line his own pockets and ran off with the organisation’s meager funds. Despite this set back the dockers persevered and by 1872, the LPL had branches in Southwark, Wapping, Horsleydown and Greenwich.

By October the membership was 30,000-strong, of which 18,000 were working on the South bank docks.

They began a series of strikes in June of 1872, winning a penny or so a day on daily rates as low as three or four pence an hour.

The cuts imposed by the big player the East & West India Dock Co - were rescinded but it would not budge on a minimum wage and the much disliked system used to obtain and pay the casual workers for the ship yards.

Particularly in the timber trade, the hiring was done by “contractors”, usually dockside publicans, who had an agreement to supply willing men as needed to work in the shipyards.

This suited the shipping companies because they never knew exactly when ships would dock, so for a one-off fee they had casual labour on tap.

But for the ‘lumpers’ who unloaded the cargo of heavy timber from the ship’s hold, it was beer they had on tap. With many lumpers contracted out by the same pub landlords who served them ale all night long –their wages often went straight back behind the bar.

In 1851 Henry Mayhew, author of ‘London Labour and the London Poor’ (1840) interviewed a lumper who gave a reluctant account of his role.

He wrote: “The lumpers…are so besotted with the drink which they are tempted to obtain from the publicans who employ them, as to look upon the man who tricks them out of their earnings rather as a friend than as an enemy.”

A dock in pay sparks first ship workers’ union Mayhew had to “cross-question” a lumper, who was afraid of being discharged by his contractor, to get a reliable account from him.

“He was evidently in fear of losing his work; and the tavern to which I had gone to take his statement was filled with foremen watching and intimidating him.

He said: “I am a working lumper, or labourer at discharging timber or dealships. I have been sixteen years at work. I should think that there are more than 200 men ….who are constantly engaged at the work…..In summer a great many Irish labourers seek for work as lumpers. They come over from Ireland in the cork boats. I should say there are altogether upward of 500 regular working lumpers, but in the summer there are at least 200 more.””

Thankfully there was plenty of work to go around from July to January, but between January and July, the lumpers had very little to do, when they would try to get whatever work they could to

keep them going. In the summer time, the working day for a lumper was 6am to 6pm and from daylight to dark in the winter. The lumpers worked in gangs under foremen who were sometimes the publicans who contracted the workers. “We are usually paid at 7 o’clock in the evening,” the anonymous lumper told Mayhew.

“I have been paid as late as 3 o’clock on Sunday morning….and I was all that time in the public house.

We go straight to the public house after we have done our work.”

The 1872 strike was the beginning of trade union protection for the poorest dock workers like the lumpers, leading to companies employing more permanent staff and setting the stage for the biggest dock strike in history seventeen years later in 1889.

I ALMOST don’t want to tell you about my little secret. Maybe I can whisper it to you?

Amongst the brick towers, scaffolding and closed down pubs and before the rows of pretentious Bermondsey Street eateries, there is a little Italian restaurant called Locanda del Melo.

At the front, there is a fridge of fine deli meat and cheese and the walls hold a selection of Italian wine, jams, sauces, biscuits and pasta. By day, the deli offers sandwiches and salads for the hurried customer.

At the back, tucked behind the deli, is a small dining area for about 18 people. This extension was only opened in August last year and has been serving fresh Italian food ever since.

I have walked past it many times and have always seen dimly lit people tossing back large glasses of wine every day of the week.

So when my boyfriend and I arrived on Saturday night we found the place filled with two Italian families to our side (both friends of the chef and manager) and a chatty couple behind us.

The manager, Marco, explained the menu with delicate detail and offered to choose the wine. He arrived moments later with a bottle of red Campofiorin wine that he said would go perfectly with our food.

To start, I began with Tomino chesse wrapped in speck on a bed of Trevigiano sauce. As I cut the ball of meat in half, the melted cheese spilled out into the sauce and I scooped it into my mouth. The cheese and speck were a great mix, rich in texture and taste but the sharp onion sauce sliced my palette into pieces.

At the sight of my face, my boyfriend quickly reached over to snatch my plate of appetizing meat and gobbled down the sauce with no aversion.

Since he now sat with two starters in front of him, I took his plate of mozzarella and aubergine puree. You should always expect a creamy ball of cheese at any Italian restaurant but what I did not expect was the fresh aubergine puree that lay beneath it. I finished it before my boyfriend had a chance to take it back.

With our plates licked clean, Marco quickly served us our mains. I was a little disappointed to see a small plate of veal agnolotti in saffron sauce but I soon realized there was a lot more to this meal than met the eye. Inside each little pocket of handmade pasta was soft shredded veal floating in tomato sauce infused with aromatic saffron. After a few bites, I held my belly and passed the plate over to my

partner, who was already more than half way through his rabbit.

My boyfriend ordered the special of the day, roasted rabbit with yellow polenta and radicchio. He handed it over to me and exclaimed, with his mouth full, that the rabbit went “excellently” with the wine and then downed another glass. Worried that it might be the alcohol talking, I tasted the rabbit. Rabbit is usually filled with tiny and annoying bones, but the chef managed to erase any trace of bone and instead layered it with herbs, a much better alternative.

To finish, we chose to finally admit defeat and decided to share a classic tiramisu and a slice of pear and chocolate tart.

The tiramisu was creamy and absent of the usual overload of whipped cream, tasting just like the ones you might taste in Milan, and the tart was a medley of poached pear and almost solid chocolate. Alongside the tart was a ball of vanilla ice cream (which also came from Italy as Marco told us).

Every ingredient in our meals tasted fresh, including the ice cream, as if straight from the owner’s home town, Monza. I fully intend to come back for another fresh bite of Italy, (so please don’t tell anyone about it).

1. Transport for London having consulted the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that it has made the above named Traffic Order under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 for the purpose specified in paragraph 2. The effect of the Order is summarised in paragraph 3.

Lycamobile support city Cricket CHILDREN IN Southwark and Lambeth will be off the streets and playing cricket, thanks to a new partnership between Lycamobile, Chance to Shine and Surrey CCC.

At an event at the Kia Oval last week, Lycamobile, the world’s biggest international mobile virtual network operator, announced that would be extending its sponsorship of Surrey CCC as well as supporting the youth element of ‘Chance to Shine Street’, the cricket charity’s community programme (previously StreetChance).

Lycamobile also becomes headline sponsor of the Chance to Shine Street Awards, which reward and recognise players and coaches involved in the programme.

The award-winning initiative was launched in 2008 to bring cricket to young people in urban areas where there are few green spaces and fewer traditional cricket clubs. The charity is also using the game to promote social cohesion and connect young people from different backgrounds in diverse communities.

The Chance to Shine Street Youth programme is: • free to take part in • made up of weekly sessions in the evenings and weekends, all year round • held at community venues, such as leisure centres, sports halls and caged areas around housing estates and parks • aimed at eight to 15 year-olds • based on an exciting six-a-side format using a tape-ball – a tennis ball wrapped in electrical tape • inclusive and accessible with little equipment required and everyone getting a chance to bat, bowl and field.

Youth projects currently run nationally in eight key areas: Birmingham, Bristol, Dewsbury, Hull, Leicester, Liverpool, London and Manchester. The charity identified towns and cities that lacked cricket provision and areas within them that were socially deprived or had high levels of crime and anti-social behaviour.

The Lycamobile agreement follows the launch in January of Chance to Shine’s ‘Second Innings’ appeal in January 2015. The charity is aiming to raise £25 million in order to reach at least one million more young people in schools and communities around the country by 2020.

Chief executive of Chance to Shine, Luke Swanson, said, “Chance to Shine Street is fast-paced, hardhitting, loud, fun and open to anyone.

It has a proven record of attracting young people, supporting their development and keeping them engaged in the game.

“This partnership builds on Lycamobile’s commitment both to cricket and to connecting communities: together we can further broaden the reach of the game, bringing its benefits to many more young people in some of our most deprived communities.”

Chance to Shine also runs Young Adults Street cricket competitions for 16 to 24 year olds following a National Lottery grant from Sport England in 2012. improvement since the appointment of new manager Dean Harrision midway through this season.

SUPER-SUB Lily Agg admits she overcame less than ideal pre-match preparations to inspire Millwall Lionesses to a thrilling 3-2 away victory over Durham on Sunday.

Amelia Pereira gave the hosts a first-half advantage before Rinsola Babajide netted her first Women's Super League goal to equalise for Millwall after the break.

Agg then came off the bench to turn the game with two goals and

although Beth Hepple replied, the Lionesses held on for their first league victory of the season.

The super sub said: “I’ve been injured leading up to the game, against Arsenal I had to come off at half-time because I’ve had a bad hamstring.

“And then I’ve been away in Spain with my University on tour, so it wasn’t the best preparation. I wanted to come on at half-time but Dan Mlinar didn’t think I had it in me.

“When I did get on, he said I needed to get in behind their centre-

backs and look to spin them. Luckily I got in twice and scored.”

The Lionesses now have a two week break before they return to action with a trip to Watford Ladies on Sunday April 19.

In a fast moving contest the Burgess Park side went over the line themselves on many occasions but points also flowed at the other end.

A club spokeswoman said: “The Tigers' included several new boys including some younger players who had never played on a big pitch.

“There were some great individual performances and a well honed band of Southwark brothers kept going despite the score and having abandoned any thoughts of winning.”

SURREY HAVE signed Australian all-rounder Moises Henriques as one of the club’s overseas players for this summer’s Natwest T20 blast.

Henriques, 28, will join Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara at Surrey as the club look to make it three consecutive Edgbaston Finals Days in 2015.

In Australian domestic cricket, Henriques is captain of the New South Wales Blues and also leads the Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League.

He has played all forms of cricket for Australia and has played four seasons in the Indian Premier League.

Henriques said: “I’m really looking forward to playing for Surrey this season. It’s a club with a proud history and an exciting squad and I hope to play my part in achieving success this summer.

STANSFELD INFLICTED a defeat on bottom side Chipstead despite having Billy Jolley sent off in their Kent County Premier league fixture.

Despite the early bath for Jolley, for two yellow cards, goals from Michael Smith and Martin Giltinane ensured the Southwark side won 21. Jonathan Coleman netted for the Chips.

On Monday Stansfeld fared less well against title chasing APM Contrast as the Bermondsey lost 2-1 to the side currently second place in the table. Billy Shinners got the Stansfeld goal.

Stansfeld reserves picked up an important win over the weekend when they defeated FC Elmstead in a top of the table clash.

Goals from Casey Killilea, Sam Kirby and Henry Sewell were enough to secure a 3-2 win on Saturday.

Stansfeld now enjoy a six point lead over their nearest rivals in Division Two West of the Kent County League, although Elmstead still have a game in hand on the top of the table side from Southwark.

Motivation: There's no question that Neil Harris has got Millwall fired up. Energy levels seem higher, the Lions are playing at a faster tempo and there is an intensity to their performances which was sorely lacking. While it will take a minor miracle for the club to stay in the Championship, you can bet that with Harris in charge they'll at least make a fist of it. And the next six games will determine whether Harris gets the job permanently, so there is a lot to play for.

Mood: The Millwall dressing room appears to be a much happier place under Harris. Players have been speaking very highly of his enjoyable training sessions and comprehensive game-plans. The squad knows that survival is a very tough ask but beating Charlton has given confidence levels a much-welcome boost.

Key man: Ed Upson. Harris is bringing out the best in the former Yeovil midfielder, who is also benefiting from a regular run in the team. His performance against the Addicks was arguably his best in a Lions shirt and he can really drive the team forward with his darting runs from deep.

Injuries: Lee Martin and Paris Cowan-Hall could return to fitness just in the nick of time. The wing duo may feature against Watford this weekend if they come through training unscathed. Motivation: The target all season has been automatic promotion and if they win their last five games, they'll get it. Watford won't be taking Millwall lightly at all. I'd expected a fully pumped-up performance at The Den. Mood: They've been confident of promotion for a while - it wasn't long ago that they were top of the table. This group of players expects to finish in the top two. Their form has been excellent so they are in a very good place.

Key man: Troy Deeney. He's their captain and talisman. He's a big personality in the dressing room and form-wise he's red-hot. He's desperate to be the division's top-scorer.

Injuries: Joel Ekstrand and Sean Murray are out for the season. Marco Motta will be back from suspension and Almen Abdi, who is technically their best player, is returning to fitness.

Motivation: If you ask the fans, the season is already over and realistically the players and manager know it as well in terms of making the play-offs. But the stock answer we're getting is that Blackburn want to finish as strongly as possible - and they beat Leeds 3-0 away in their last league game.

Mood: Finishing in the top six would have been the best case scenario.

The disappointment is that Blackburn aren't even close to those positions, so the fans are disappointed that their side aren't even challenging.

Key man: They have two livewires - James McClean and Kim Bokyung. Kim should be playing in the top half of the Championship, possibly even in the Premier League.

Mood: They've won four in a row and they are the form team.

Benik Afobe came in during January and he's been lethal. They have lots of goalscoring options and confidence levels couldn't be higher.

Key man: Bakary Sako - he contributes with both goals and assists. They need to keep him fit and firing.

Injuries: Wolves' only injury is Tommy Rowe, who was in and out of the team anyway. They've been full-strength since Christmas.

But that’s nothing compared to Charlton’s now 19-year wait for a win over the Lions.

March 9, 1996 was the date of the Addicks’ last victory in the south London derby, a remarkable record given that the two clubs have been in the same division for four of the last five seasons.

But those inside The Valley were confident that, this time, things would be different. Not only were Millwall struggling for form, without a win in nine Championship games, but they too were haunted by an unenviable club record.

October 24, 2014 was the date of the Lions’ last victory in SE16, a slender 1-0 triumph over Cardiff in front of the TV cameras.

Thirteen home games - as well as Halloween, Bonfire Night, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day - came and went without a win.

And Charlton, one of the form sides in the division following a fine run of results under new boss Guy Luzon, were determined to extend Millwall’s Den misery beyond Easter.

But Lions fans had seen a noticeable improvement from their side in Neil

Harris’ first home game in charge, a gritty, spirited 0-0 draw with Brighton under the lights.

The revival under Harris has been steady, each match a step in the right direction if not towards safety, then towards a brighter future in League One. Harris had come so close to his first win at Brentford, overseeing a fine away performance in which Millwall scored two goals in a game for the first time since November.

But the Bees’ two-goal comeback in the last five minutes summed up a lot of what has gone wrong this season, even though Harris was absolved of any blame.

Harris promised another improvement against Charlton. And minutes before kick-off, he promised his players that they would win.

That belief and conviction in Harris’ leadership is fast becoming a powerful force both in the dressing room and in the stands.

The fans are starting to identify with the players, and vice versa. So a high-stakes derby with Charlton really could not have come at a better time.

Harris had vowed supporters would see an “aggression that the situation demands” from his side and sure enough Millwall burst into life from the first whistle.

Ed Upson, whose inch-perfect assist created Lee Gregory's goal at Griffin Park, almost repeated the trick but on this occasion his floated diagonal pass drifted

just beyond the striker.

Upson’s dangerous free kick was then flicked behind for the first of three corners in a row, the second of which came to Sid Nelson whose shot deflected behind.

The best of the Lions’ attacking play was all going through Upson and he started and finished an incisive move, powering a header over the bar from Dan Harding’s cross.

Upson broke forward again in the 23rd minute, skipping past Fox on the byline before sending in a low cross which the Addicks eventually scrambled clear.

On a rare Charlton break, former Den trialist Chris Eagles prodded into the side netting from Johann Gundmundsson’s clever lob. But Millwall were by far the dominant side and, after Martyn Woolford's effort was scrambled off the line, Aiden O’Brien's goal-bound followup was handled by Chris Solly.

The Charlton captain had already been booked but referee Mick Russell had no alternative but to show the right back a straight red card. But Gregory was foiled

by Stephen Henderson from 12 yards, his low spot-kick not placed far enough into the corner.

The visitors brought on Andre Bikey in an attempt to shore up their defence but the Lions continued to create the better chances. Woolford went close to turning in Jimmy Abdou's deep cross, Upson was denied by Henderson’s one-handed save and O’Brien shot over the bar during a spell of dominance.

curled narrowly wide of the top corner.

At the other end, Upson volleyed over from a corner before Williams drew another fine save from Henderson, who tipped the ball behind.

The Addicks went ahead against the run of play in the 67th minute when Fox jinked into a yard of space before delivering a low cross to the near post which Diarra cooly diverted beyond David Forde.

Harris responded to the goal by bringing on Stefan Maierhofer and Nicky Bailey for Dan Harding and Upson, who was struggling with a tight hamstring.

But it was Magaye Gueye, introduced

by Harris minutes before Charlton took the head, who smashed in the leveller from what seemed an impossible angle to set up a grandstand finish.

Simon Church almost restored the visitors’ lead but he nodded wide when well-placed to leave the Lions counting their blessings.

And Jos Hooiveld completed their comeback with an instinctive finish from close range, diverting in Gueye’s shot to send The Den into raptures.

Williams almost added a third goal in stoppage time when Henderson was caught upfield at a Charlton corner, but his miss proved immaterial as Harris’ side held on - and continued their derby dominance.

Lions keeper lifted by raucous Den crowd

BEATING CHARLTON at The Den was a real eye-opener for some of Millwall’s players.

Many of them hadn’t sampled the electric atmosphere of a full-blooded south London derby before - and the volume levels went through the roof when Jos Hooiveld scored a late winner.

But for David Forde, it was a case of blowing the cobwebs away.

He helped to build the Lions’ home into a fortress under Kenny Jackett so knows exactly what makes the crowd tick in SE16.

And now the rest of the squad has got the message - loud and clear.

“A lot of the lads haven’t experienced that true Millwall sense of pride and that euphoria at The Den,” Forde told the News.

“When new lads come to the club and when I came here too - I was

reminded that Millwall have got a way of playing, which comes down to work-rate and putting a shift in.

“If you can do that and reach those levels, the fans will forgive your shortcomings. It’s quite simple really but a lot of people struggle to grasp that.

“I’ve been saying for years that when The Den is like that, there’s no better place.

“The atmosphere is so intense that it’s inspiring. Hopefully it’s the same on Saturday and we can go into the Watford game with the crowd behind us.”

Forde has never lost to the Addicks in his six-and-a-half years with the club - a record he’s very proud of.

“That’s been fantastic,” he admitted. “And this one was all the more sweeter because they came into it thinking this was their opportunity to beat Millwall.

“They brought a big following and it looked like it was going their way

at one point - losing 1-0 to ten men would have summed up our season, it looked like being groundhog day so the manner in which we came back has really given the lads a huge lift.

“We fully deserved the win because we played extremely well.”

After Millwall briefly closed the gap on fourth-bottom Rotherham to four points, the Millers extended their lead back to seven with victory over Brighton on Easter Monday.

The Lions weren’t in action due to Blackburn’s FA Cup commitments, meaning they now have a game in hand.

And Forde said: “We’re still in with a chance.

“It’s out of our hands at the moment because we can’t control what else goes on and what the other teams do, so all we’ve got to focus on is Saturday.

“Watford have been a bogey side for us over the last few years so we

must be due a win against them soon.

“Who’s to say we can’t win the next six games? Charlton had won seven out of their last eight and their own players were a bit surprised to have achieved that.

“Anything is possible and it’s all to play for. The lads are buzzing and looking forward to another big game and a big atmosphere at The Den.” Forde has the third-best clean sheet record in the division (13). Only Keiren Westwood of Sheffield Wednesday and Middlesbrough’s Dimitrios Konstantopoulos can top that.

But that stat is, understandably, overlooked given Millwall’s league position.

“It’s a great record but it doesn’t really stand for anything,” Forde said. “It’s a good platform but the disappointment is that we haven’t really built on that platform.”

Despite Forde’s 13 clean sheets, the

Lions’ goal difference has been damaged by several heavy defeats - possibly in part a result of frequent changes to the back four.

But Neil Harris’ defence has been very settled since he took charge.

“When you look back throughout the season there have been a lot of pairings and partnerships,” Forde said.

“There has been chopping and changing in the back four and I don’t think that helps particularly.

Elsewhere in the team you need that flexibility but your back four and goalkeeper needs some stability.

“We’ve got that now and I certainly think that’s helped. Hooiveld has been fantastic and young Sid Nelson has held his own.

“He’s only 19 and playing in difficult circumstances, so that’s good to see. We could and should have had more clean sheets.”

MAGAYE GUEYE claims Ian Holloway’s comments about his weight were “stupid” but wants to put his differences with the former Millwall boss behind him.

Holloway dropped Gueye from his squad after publicly declaring that the attacker’s body fat percentage was too high.

But the 24-year-old, who inspired the Lions’ south London derby victory over Charlton, felt undermined by Holloway’s tellingoff in the media.

“This was stupid,” Gueye said.

“I think he tried to kill me [by saying those things]. But if you’re not strong, you won’t do anything in life. I want to be strong and focus on what I’m doing.

“When you’re a good person and when you work hard, good things happen.”

Gueye says his lack of fitness was down to a lack of games.

“I had a very difficult time last season,” he explained. “I didn’t play at all because I was injured. But if you want me to be fit, put me on the pitch. I can’t get fitter just by training.

“I don’t think he [Holloway] treated me how I deserved to be treated but s**t happens in life and you move on. Now I have to be professional and work hard.”

When Gueye, who was declared bankrupt by Liverpool County Court in June, first moved to The Den, Holloway helped him find an apartment with a view to “getting him back on the right path”.

“He was like that at the beginning but after that he completely changed,” Gueye added. “This is the past now and I want to forget about it. We’ve got a new manager and things are changing.”

Interim manager Neil Harris has made some important changes to training.

“It’s more football and more enjoyment in training,” Gueye revealed.

“We’re working hard and the team is happier. The players get to play more football, enjoy training with a smile on our faces and touch the ball

more. The strikers practise a lot of finishing and we play more smallsided games.”

Gueye put that extra finishing to good use against the Addicks with a terrific equaliser, squeezing his shot in from a very narrow angle.

“I’m a player that likes a challenge,” said the former France youth international, who has also scored late goals against Sheffield Wednesday and Bournemouth this campaign.

“When we’re not winning and it’s difficult, I like to bring my talent and bring my best, which is creating goals and sometimes scoring them. I think I’m a striker.

“When I was at Everton they put me on the left because I am leftfooted but in my mind I always think that I am a second striker, playing behind a main striker.

“All of my goals have been scored from inside the box because I’m not a winger.”

The win against Charlton could inject fresh energy into Millwall’s survival bid.

“Now we have a chance of staying up but we need to do the same against Watford and Wigan, there can be no mistakes - we need to win,” he said.

“If we play like we did against Charlton and show the same attitude and spirit, we’re going to be OK. “And I don’t watch the other games, I focus on Millwall.

We have to make sure we win our games and then afterwards look at the other results.”

Gueye’s contract expires in the summer, although the Lions have the option to extend it by a year.

But hee hasn’t given any thought to his future.

He said: “I hope that we stay up. I just want to be successful with Millwall and that’s my plan. I haven’t talked to my agent or the club about my future, nobody has come to me yet.

“I want to finish the season strongly. I don’t want to talk about this now. I’m just focused on the last six games and if I play, I want to be a winner. I think I can help the team to stay up.”

NEIL HARRIS says Millwall won’t be fazed by their difficult end to the season, insisting: We’re not worried about who we play.

The Lions take on four of the Championship's top ten during the final run-in, starting with third-placed Watford at The Den on Saturday.

Millwall are seven points adrift of safety after Rotherham beat Brighton on Monday and will need to win the majority of their remaining fixtures to avoid relegation.

Games against high-flying Derby and Wolves also lie ahead but Harris can’t wait to lock horns with sides who are battling for promotion.

“They’re great games and give the players a chance to challenge themselves against some top teams,” he told the News.

“We’ll test anybody, so we’re not concerned about playing Watford.

“We’ve just beaten an in-form Charlton team in a local derby we and should have beaten a top Brentford side after playing really well, so while we’re very respectful of Watford we aren’t concerned about playing them.

“We’re not worried about who we play.

“We know Watford are a very good team with some dangerous players players who have scored a lot of goals

this season - but we’re also doing very well ourselves at the moment.

“We’re fighting for two completely different things - they’re going for promotion and we’re looking for survival - but it’s all to play for.

“We’re at home again and having set the bar against Brighton, we raised it against Charlton and we’ve got to perform at least as well as we did in those games, if not better, to beat Watford.”

A raucous crowd of 14,772 inspired Harris’ side to victory over the Addicks and he’s hoping for another cracking Den atmosphere this weekend.

“It costs a lot of money to come to football and bring your kids with you I know that because I’m a football fan myself - so fans can’t come every week,” he said.

“But I think every fan who was at The Den last Friday would have loved what they saw from their team and if they can come again on Saturday, that would be great.

“I can promise the fans that they won’t be short-changed in terms of the Millwall spirit and attitude of the players. We’ll see if that’s enough to win

but w e will have a right go.

“The fans pay their money and demand to see a fighting performance and I can guarantee they’ll get one against Watford.”

Harris has confirmed that he and assistant Dave Livermore are using former Crystal Palace and Reading manager Steve Coppell as a “sounding board” for their ideas.

Coppell watched the Charlton win from the directors’ box and is expected to take in several more matches before the end of the season.

Harris said: “We have a lot of knowledge about this club but where we fall short is our years of experience on the touchline.

“Steve was recommended by a friend and we’ve already spoken. He’s a great guy and his knowledge is ridiculous - he knows everybody and everything.

“He is someone I’ve leant on for the odd bit of advice in the last couple of weeks.”

DAVID FORDE reckons Neil Harris has all the makings of a successful Millwall manager.

Forde says the former striker has “matured into the role” since his appointment on an interim basis last month.

The club legend is the overwhelming favourite to land the job permanently in the summer after overseeing a steady improvement in performances during his first four games in charge.

And Forde believes Harris has managed the transition from U21s coach to first-team boss well, adding that the 37-year-old is a popular figure in the dressing room.

Forde told the News: “I think he’s got a big future ahead of him in management.

“He’s learned immensely from his caretaker spell 18 months ago and he’s really matured into the role now that he’s had more experience with the U21s and learnt from the likes of Ian Holloway.

“He’s got a lot of contacts in the game so I’m sure he still speaks to Kenny Jackett and Sean Dyche. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working with him and the lads have taken to him as well. He’s definitely matured in the last year or so.”

Forde admits that his relationship with Harris has changed since he became a manager.

“It has to be different and that comes from a level of maturity,” said the goalkeeper.

“The players understand that he’s the boss at the moment and that’s the way it works. I respect him for what he did as a player and now I respect him for what he’s doing as a manager.

“I’ve been very impressed with Neil and he’s definitely got a bright future.”
