THE “LOW LIVES” targeting elderly people at cash points need to be caught before someone is hurt, a concerned daughter has said.

Avril Wiltshire’s words came after her 79year-old mother Rita Leipsegar had £300 stolen from her bank account by an

opportunist thief.

The great-grandmother fell victim to a distraction theft while using a cash point in broad daylight outside the Post Office on Southwark Park Road.

Mrs Leipsegar said she felt “stupid” after the incident and was left in floods of tears.

“The police need to catch these lowlives and more needs to be done to put more cameras up,” her daughter told the News.

“It could be that he might hurt somebody next time.”

Bright future for A-level pupils, but let’s hope the same is true for our schools

T

HE FUTURE looks bright for the A-level students who last week received their results, with an impressive 98.7 per cent pass rate overall across the borough.

Many of the academies, schools and colleges have fairly new sixth forms, so the increased pass rate shows that the past investments made have paid off.

The backdrop to all of this is an unprecedented disquiet from our head teachers, who are predicted to be the worst hit by the Government’s national funding formula.

Eighty heads across the borough have written in protest to stop it from being implemented, with an estimated cut in Southwark of £1,024 per pupil per year.

Last month the education secretary Justine Greening responded to our heads and others across the country by announcing that the overall core schools budget would rise by £1.3 billion between 2017-18 and 2019-20. She said that all schools would receive at least an increase of 0.5 per cent in real cash terms. But the government’s plan to introduce the national funding formula, with the aim of ensuring money is distributed more fairly across the country, will go ahead from 2018/19. The details of the updated version of the formula, with budgets for individual schools, are due to be released for the autumn.

By spreading the formula across the country, those schools with the most disadvantaged pupils would be hit the hardest. Whether the revised formula will be enough to plug the estimated cuts in Southwark is yet to be seen.

School funding became a major issue during the general election, with heads and unions complaining of having to make cuts to staffing and subjects. They have pointed to evidence from the National Audit Office and the Institute of Fiscal Studies, which has warned of a £3 billion funding gap and schools facing an eight per cent real-terms budget cut.

But the protests from schools, union and parents does appear to have had some impact. Post the disastrous election results for the government, Greening’s announcement shows that the government finally appears to be listening.

However, many have pointed out that the £1.3 billion being put into school budgets over the next two years is not new money - it is being taken from other budgets, including spending on free schools, school improvement support and healthy pupils capital funding.

Greening has vowed that no school will lose out in cash terms from the revised funding formula when it is announced in the autumn. Ensuring that is true will be a test of all head teachers’ maths skills and it is important that the momentum that has made the government re-think continues.

There is a danger that we could all be caught up in a game of smoke and mirrors.

Sellers could be raking in thousands by hawking sick pets - Blue Cross EXCLUSIVE

RESIDENTS ARE being warned about buying puppies from unlicensed sellers online by an animal welfare charity.

Unlicensed internet sellers could be raking in thousands in untaxed profits by hawking puppies without any regard for their welfare.

One seller operating out of Southwark could be pocketing untaxed profits of between £51,000 and £204,000 over fifteen months by selling puppies online, according to Blue Cross.

The animal welfare charity began looking at the evidence of large scale online puppy sellers after regularly seeing seriously ill pets in need of their help – as well as their devastated new owners.

Evidence suggests there are also individuals making significant profits selling kittens online, including one seller in Southwark who listed 253 adverts for kittens over 24 months – an average of 21 adverts per month.

The online trade in pets is growing rapidly and unlicensed internet sellers are not easily identifiable to local authorities, who rely on the honesty of traders to

apply for a licence.

In 2015, nearly half of all local authorities carried out no investigations at all into suspected unlicensed premises, according to the Blue Cross.

HMRC has now set up a task force to look specifically at online ads for puppies and kittens to identify the scale of untaxed and illegal activity.

Becky Thwaites, head of public affairs for Blue Cross, said: “At Blue Cross we regularly see seriously ill pets and their devastated new owners – victims of unscrupulous breeders and sellers who prioritise profit over welfare.

“As an organisation, we have been campaigning for a robust licensing regime to ensure these sellers don’t slip through the net.”

Blue Cross has advised potential purchasers to thoroughly do their research before buying a puppy and always ensure they see the pup with its mother.

When looking for a puppy online, it is important to check the advert, looking out for suspicious signs that may indicate the advert is from an unlicensed puppy dealer, the charity has said.

New park on old Fisher FC ground named after Mayflower A PARK has been opened on the site of the old Fisher FC ground in Rotherhithe, writes Chiara Giordano...

There were originally calls for the green space in Salter Road to be named the late Bermondsey funeral director Barry Albin-Dyer, but the council has named it the Mayflower Park in remembrance of the boat that set sail to the New World from Rotherhithe.

The park’s gates are now open to the public, bringing the council’s total number of parks and open spaces to 131.

It is in its infancy but is landscaped and has been freshly planted with trees.

Cllr Barrie Hargrove, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for communities, leisure and safety, said: “We are delighted to bring a new green space to Rotherhithe and I hope it will fast become well used and valued by the local community.”

Mayflower Park was opened with the help of Fairview Estates, who pitched in as part of its planning conditions.

NEIL COYLE MP has slammed Donald Trump over his response to the Charlottesville rally.

Neil Coyle has said the US President should have condemned “wholeheartedly” the flying of the Nazi flag following the violence of the white nationalist rally in Virginia.

One woman, a counter protester, was killed and several injured after a car driven by a white supremacist ploughed into crowds during the rally on August 12.

In his column in this week’s News, the Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP refers to his grandfather who was at the D-Day landings aged just 21 and the Americans who fought to defeat Hitler’s Nazi regime.

“He was one of the British soldiers who liberated the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp and saw first-hand the enormity of the horror the Nazis imposed,” he writes.

“His whole generation gave everything they had to defeat fascism – including those back home like my nan working in a munitions factory and everyone in Southwark who withstood the ferocious Luftwaffe bombings.

“So to see Americans flying the Nazi flag in Charlottesville recently is sickening and an insult to the American forces who joined Commonwealth fighters across the globe to defeat fascist regimes. Trump should have condemned it wholeheartedly. That he didn’t is beyond reasoning. Any strong UK leader would also be able to demand greater action from their US counterpart.”

Family living on Ledbury Estate bathing baby in bowl after gas is turned off over safety fears

A FAMILY on the Ledbury Estate, where residents have been advised to leave over safety fears, have said being forced to wash their baby in a bowl is “like living in the 1940s”.

All the households in the four tower blocks by Old Kent Road, were told by Southwark Council that major works will be needed on their flat, after the authority disclosed that the blocks may not be safe to carry gas, and switched off supplies.

Vaunda and Stephen Hill, and their sons nine-year-old Zachary and seven-monthold James, are in the throes of bidding for a new home that will meet their disability needs.

Since the disruption, the council has given out hot plates as a temporary measure before new electric cookers are fitted. Immersion heaters will also be distributed to allow for hot showers, whilst residents have been invited to bathe at leisure centres.

Vaunda said: “We are actually quite lucky that we’ve got an electric shower, and an electric cooker. But we do have to clean our little one [baby James] by boiling a kettle and bathing him in a bowl.

It’s like being in the 1940s, my nan said that’s how she was bathed.”

Stephen, 39, told the News: “Zachary and I are both autistic, and I’ve got a history of having strokes. We need an adapted flat with a ramp and a wet room.

There’s a lot of vulnerable people in the blocks and a lot of young children.”

Stephen has had five strokes; four were in 2014 and his most recent was in July, shortly after the disruption at the Ledbury began.

“The doctor said it was stress related,” Stephen said. “The other things about it is that my three-year-old from a previous relationship likes to come and stay with us, but with this situation they can’t.

“In fact my son is stressing the most. He has autism and I don’t know how this is going to affect him at school. We’ve got to wait and see, but it feels like we’re in limbo.”

The council confirmed on August 10 that “strengthening works” – carried out on estates in England under government order, following the deadly Ronan Point tower block collapse in 1968 – may never have happened on the Ledbury. The revelations meant that the thirteen-storey blocks could collapse in the event of a gas explosion.

“It was a shock. It’s very surreal. It’s tiring more than anything,” said Vaunda, 42.

Stephen said: “It’s the sort of thing you would never expect to happen. It’s the sort

of thing you would read about in the paper.”

Despite the upheaval, the family said they didn’t feel angry, because it “won’t help resolve the situation.

“I think everyone is trying to make the best of a bad situation,” Vaunda said. “A lot of people want a solution and they want it now. But they [the council] are still working on a solution.”

A Southwark Council spokeswoman told the News that all tower block residents will most likely need to move into new homes temporarily to facilitate future major works that need doing to their flats. The details of those works will be explained in a report produced by structural surveyors, Arup. This report has not yet been completed, though it is due soon.

Lib Dems demand Extraordinary Meeting to discuss ‘ongoing crisis’ over Ledbury Estate homes

SOUTHWARK LIBERAL Democrats have demanded that the council holds an Extraordinary Meeting to discuss the “ongoing crisis” on the Ledbury Estate.

Four thirteen-storey tower blocks have had gas supplies turned off, and residents were told they will all but certainly have to move when intense refurbishment works are carried out.

Leader of Southwark Lib Dems, councillor Anood Al-Samerai, said: “Residents on the Ledbury Estate have informed us that they are dissatisfied with the council’s response to the ongoing crisis surrounding their homes and we are now seeking the opportunity to hold the council to account.

“With no council assembly meeting due until late November, we are concerned that there may not be the opportunity to discuss the serious situation that many residents find themselves in, we have therefore called for this Extraordinary Meeting. We await the Mayor’s response.”

Southwark Council leader Peter John said: “We have done, and will continue doing everything we can to support residents through a difficult and disruptive time. A decision on whether or not to call an Extraordinary Council Assembly is one for the Mayor and the Council’s Monitoring Officer. Our priority remains the residents of the Ledbury Estate, and not party politics.”

JURORS TRYING a Bermondsey cyclist accused of killing a mother-oftwo by ploughing into her on a bike with no front brake have begun their deliberations.

Former courier Charlie Alliston was eighteen-years-old when he hit Kim Briggs as she crossed Old Street, in east London, on February 12 last year.

The 44-year-old HR consultant, who had been on her lunch break, suffered "catastrophic" injuries when the pair clashed heads and she died in hospital a week later.

Alliston, now 20, later blamed her for the collision in posts online. He denies causing bodily harm to Mrs Briggs by "wanton or furious driving" under the 1861 Offences Against the Person Act. In a legal first, he is also accused of the manslaughter of Mrs Briggs, of Lewisham, south London, a charge he denies.

Alliston was riding a Planet X fixed wheel track bike, which he bought as an "upgrade" in January last year, at the time of the crash.

Prosecutors say the collision could have been avoided had a front brake been fitted, a legal requirement Alliston claims he was not aware of. But the defendant told the jury having a front brake “wouldn’t have made a difference” because he would not have had time to pull it.

Judge Wendy Joseph QC, in summing up to the jury at the Old Bailey, said a police expert estimated Alliston was doing between 10 and 14 miles per hour just moments before the crash, which was captured on CCTV. The same police expert said tests showed a fixed wheel bike similar to Alliston’s but fitted with a front brake would have been able to stop in time.

During his evidence, Alliston said he shouted twice after spotting Mrs Briggs, slowed down as he approached and manoeuvred his bike to avoid her before she “stepped back”. He later wrote on a cycling forum that he had twice warned Mrs Briggs to "get the f*** outta my

way," and denied he was at fault, the court heard.

One witness, David Callan, told jurors he heard Alliston shout something as Mrs Briggs lay on the ground.

Judge Joseph said: “It’s hard to think of a case that’s more likely to rouse your emotions.

“A young man who was eighteen at the time. A woman in her 40s with her life ahead of her. Put to one side feelings of emotion, feelings of sympathy, feelings of revulsion, feelings of prejudice.”

In his closing speech before the jury was sent out, Mark Wyeth QC, defending, questioned the manslaughter charge.

He said: "I ask as a matter of common sense and looking across all the evidence, is this really manslaughter? Really?

"We've had an eloquent speech from (prosecutor) Mr (Duncan) Penny, we've had mood music all around this case and yes, it's a tragedy for the Briggs family.

It's also a tragedy for the Alliston family.”

Mr Wyeth suggested it was unlikely that drivers in Alliston's position would face the same charge. He said Mrs Briggs had not used the pedestrian crossing 30 feet away from where the pair collided and Alliston had right of way.

"This is not a case of somebody jumping the lights," he said.

"This is not a case of an approach speed on this bike that was illegal. It's a 30mph area and the hazards that were in that road were not of Mr Alliston's making."

The jury was still out deliberating as the News went to press.

Woman cut from car after collision FIREFIGHTERS CUT an injured woman out of a bashed up car after a collision in Mandela Way, SE1, on Tuesday night.

Three fire engines, police and the London Ambulance Service attended the junction with Dunton Road at 7:46pm,

where two cars had collided. Police said one car, believed to have been involved in the collision, was later found abandoned nearby. It was confirmed that one woman was taken to a south London hospital with non-life-threatening and non-life-changing injuries.

A GREAT-grandmother was left in floods of tears after cash point thieves struck again in Bermondsey.

Rita Leipsegar had £300 stolen from her bank account after a brazen thief conned her in broad daylight at a cash point outside the Post Office on Southwark Park Road.

The vulnerable 79-year-old, who has a pacemaker and defibrillator in her chest because only 20-25 per cent of her heart works, said she still cried about what happened when she thought about it.

“I put my card into the machine and someone tapped me on the shoulder,” she recalled.

“I turned around and a man said he had trouble getting his money out and to take my card back out but it wasn’t there.

“He said it had probably been swallowed and to try my pin again, so I did but it didn’t come out. When I turned around he had walked away.”

Mrs Leipsegar, who has thirteen grandchildren and fifteen greatgrandchildren, said she was told by the bank that £300 was taken out of her account at a cash point outside a nearby Tesco Express just moments after the theft.

“He was a young fella and he seemed so nice,” said the pensioner, who used to work at the Home Office.

“Afterwards I felt like I was stupid for being conned and if I had got hold of him I would’ve thumped him.

The News previously reported the story of 80-year-old Matthew Redmond, who also had £300 stolen from his account after his card was swiped by thieves in a distraction theft at a cash point just yards from the one Mrs Leipsegar used.

“We do currently have a CCTV radio link on Southwark Park Road which is led by the Southwark Business Crime Reduction Partnership, which aids local businesses in watching out for each other and providing instant information to the Safer Neighbourhood Team (when on duty) and also the Southwark CCTV control room,” he said.

“The best advice I can give to elderly people using ATMs anywhere is, if possible, always use an ATM inside of a bank.”

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police added: “We are investigating a theft of person at about 12.55pm on August 13 on Southwark Park Road.

“The victim was a woman in her late 70s and she was approached by a man who told her the cash machine wasn’t working and he persuaded her to enter her pin number again and she then discovered that her card had been taken.

“The suspect is described as a black male aged between 20-30 years old.”

‘Ten muggings by moped riders in just one day’

ROTHERHITHE: Residents have reported ten muggings in a day by people riding mopeds.

Steve Cornish, chairman of the Friends of Russia Dock Woodland, reported the muggings in Rotherhithe on Monday morning, August 21.

He tweeted that concerned residents had told him police were out of breath chasing the suspects on foot.

And he added that residents, especially women, were “very concerned about even going out with a phone or handbag”.

MPS Southwark’s Twitter account confirmed there had been a spate of thefts in the area.

“There was a [spate] of thefts yesterday,” they said on Tuesday.

“Due to positive action by police as you mention we now have a number of positive forensic leads.”

The News contacted the police for a comment but received no response.

‘Peckham Portraits’ to get new home outside cinema

THE ‘PECKHAM Portraits’ which were removed from Peckham Hill Street earlier this year are to be given a new home outside PeckhamPlex, the council has announced.

Locals reacted angrily when the portraits of black British actors, including Idris Elba OBE; Don Warrington and Rudolph Walker OBE, were taken down without warning on March 12.

The portraits were moved from the fence that surrounded a large open space behind Peckham Library when construction began on the forthcoming Mountview Academy acting school.

The council has followed through on its commitment to spend £15,000 to clean and reframe the portraits and find them a new home.

They will be relocated to an “alcove” by the cinema “in the new year”.

Councillor Johnson Situ, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for business and culture, said: “These treasured and inspirational portraits are important to us and the people of Peckham. I am very pleased that we will be able to bring a number of them home this September.”

Abubakar Kamara, manager of B@kus Business Service shop opposite where the portraits stood, previously told the News: “The pictures used to make the youth stop and wonder who those people in the pictures were. They are people who have given a lot, and got on with their lives in black society.”

His son, Ibrahim Kamara (pictured) called them “iconic” and said he had grown up looking at them.

The 38-year-old man was arrested in Southwark Park Road at about 9.45pm on Monday, August 21.

Officers made the arrest after receiving information from a third party. “The man was taken to a south London police station for questioning,” a Met Police spokesperson told the News.

“He has been released under investigation pending further enquiries.”

Public meeting over police stations SOUTHWARK: Police in Southwark have announced a public meeting will be held to consult with residents over the planned closure of two police station front counters.

An announcement by the Mayor of London last month said police stations in Peckham and Borough High Street are likely to lose their front counters, whilst Walworth Police Station’s will remain open.

The consultation meeting will be held on September 28 at a venue and time to be confirmed.

A statement from the local police force said: “The Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime has committed to retaining one 24/7 police station front counter in every London borough.

Decisions on other police station front counters will be made following the outcome of the consultation.

Currently, there is one 24/7 police station front counter open to the public, at Walworth Police Station.

Peckham Police Station is open to the public 7am-10pm daily, and Southwark Police Station 10am-7pm.”

Change to repair-line number ‘will cost poorer residents more’

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL’S changes to its housing-repairs phone service will cost more for poorer residents, a tenants’ group has claimed.

Southwark Group of Tenants Organisation (SGTO) has launched a petition calling on the council to scrap its 0300 number, and revert back to 0800.

Campaigns officer Billy Harding told the News that the switch would cost some residents who used phone credit more money – up to 55p per minute depending on the network

provider – to report housing issues.

“It’s an extortionate cost, especially if you’re going to be on the phone to them for more than 30 minutes,” Billy said. “We had one elderly resident who told us he had topped up his credit and rung the council, and when he finished the call he found he had barely any credit left.”

SGTO’s petition ‘Keep Telephone Free for Repairs’ online on Change.org, has received almost 70 signatures, whilst 490 have been collected physically from visiting tenants and residents associations.

The petition will be presented to the council’s next Cabinet meeting on September 19.

A Southwark Council spokesperson told the News that the 0800 number would be phased out, but was still in use. The council’s cabinet member for housing and deputy leader, Stephanie Cryan, said: “Ofcom’s recommendation is that 0300 numbers should be allocated to public sector bodies and non-profit organisations such as charities as they are not permitted to profit from using them.

“We have found that more people want to access the council by mobile phone and online, and this modernises the service effectively and makes it cheaper and easier for them to do so – the 0300 number is

the same price as a local call from a landline.”

The council’s statement did not respond to SGTO’s argument that tenants using phone credit would be charged more.

Ofcom, the government body which regulates the telecommunications industry, states on its website that charges for 0300 numbers should cost between 4p and 40p.

Billy added: “Council officers said the phone charges should incentivise tenants to make use of the council’s website, and report more repair enquiries online. But half of the time the council’s website has been down, so people can’t access it anyway.”

Inquest into the last moments of deranged killer Brizzi’s life

DERANGED KILLER Stefano Brizzi, who murdered and dismembered a policeman in his Borough flat, hanged himself in prison a month after being taken off suicide watch, an inquest heard.

On February 6, the 50-year-old Italian national was found hanged in his cell at Belmarsh Prison, where he was serving a life sentence for the murder of PC Gordon Semple.

A pre-inquest hearing at Southwark Coroner’s Court on Tuesday (August 22) heard how Brizzi was “found suspended from a light fitting at 9.48am” by prison staff.

They attempted to resuscitate the inmate but he was pronounced dead shortly after at 10.10am, said senior coroner Dr Andrew Harris.

He had been on suicide watch from December 6 until January 4, the court heard.

Brizzi was sentenced to a minimum of 24 years in December

for the murder of PC Semple, who he killed in April last year after inviting him to his flat in Southwark Street for sex.

The former web developer for merchant bank Morgan Stanley strangled the officer then later attempted to dispose of the 59year-old's body by dissolving it in a tub of acid.

He boiled, roasted and ate other parts of the body with chopsticks before throwing the undissolved remains in the River Thames.

Brizzi’s trial heard how his once successful life spiralled out of control after he became addicted to crystal meth.

Dr Harris said a forensic autopsy subsequently ruled the cause of death to be hanging.

The pathologist reported “no significant natural disease that would have prevented him from tying knots”.

Brizzi’s inquest will examine a number of issues in depth next year.

A jury will be summoned to rule on the issues during a full inquest expected to begin on April 23 and last up to five days.

Man stabbed outside Peckham police station

A MAN who was stabbed outside Peckham Police Station is in a “serious but stable” condition.

The Met has confirmed it received a report of the stabbing in Peckham High Street at 4:35pm on Monday, August 21.

The victim was “conscious and breathing” when he was taken by the London Ambulance Service to hospital.

A crime scene was cordoned off outside Peckham Food and Wine, by the junction with Clayton Road.

A spokesman for the Met said no arrests had been made, but “a number of enquiries are in hand”.

Adam Mizou of Station Barbers walked past the scene after the incident happened.

He told the News: “There was a lot of police and I could see a lot of blood.

“There was a blue tent and they had cordoned off an area outside the corner shop.

“Not a lot of people were around, but I could see about five or six officers there.”

A WELL-known DIY shop in Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre has confirmed it will close its doors in November, after word spread it would shut down imminently.

Pricebusters was given a threemonth extension to its lease after a deal was struck between the shopping centre’s landlord Delancey Ltd and the owner of the business.

The shop’s manager of 22 years, Amul Patel, told the News: “We were due to close but we now have another three months. I had stopped buying stock.

“Customers were coming in saying they had seen on Twitter that it was going to close.

“It was quite a nice feeling to know that people cared. We appreciate knowing that we’re appreciated, and we would hope that would be enough to make the landlord change their mind.

“But business has been going down year after year. When the Heygate Estate was still here there

was a much bigger community.”

The shop’s eventual closure will mean job losses for its four staff, and the end of what was once a small chain with stores in Surrey Quays, Catford and Anerley.

The 55-year-old added: “There’s not a shop like us anywhere near here. Not down Walworth Road, not this size. And there certainly won’t be in the new shopping centre development.

“After another three months, it will depend on what’s decided, but I hope they will let us sign another lease extension.

“This place still won’t be demolished for a long time, so it would make sense. I’ve been hearing this place is going to be demolished for about 20 years.”

A report from Southwark Council, published in May this year, said the 1960s shopping centre is due for demolition in 2019.

A planning application to transform the area with new tower blocks, new shops, a new Northern Line entrance and campus for London College of Communication, has yet to be approved.

RESIDENTS IN Borough claim a charity set up by Henry VIII has locked them out of their garden for months.

Morgan Mackinnon and Johnnie Mitchell, who live in Trinity Church Square, say Trinity House locked them out of the communal garden after they clubbed together with other leaseholders to buy the freehold to their building.

An Upper Tribunal ruled that the residents had a permanent right to use the garden, rather than to the freehold of the garden.

But the charity, which plans to appeal the decision at court in November, has installed a padlocked break-glass lock, preventing residents from entering it.

Mr Mackinnon, who co-owns one of the flats with his disabled 69-year-old mother, said he was concerned she would not be able to leave the building through the rear exit in an emergency.

“The type of property this is was a major factor in her choosing it as her retirement home and it’s a major worry for me that she no longer has it [the garden] as a space that she used to really enjoy and, more seriously, if there’s an emergency she can’t exit,” the 31-year-old said.

“When we moved in my mother spent about £600 on garden furniture for everybody’s use and that’s been locked in the garden.

“I don’t think the garden forms part of the house, however there’s no other use it can be put to – it can only be accessed by

those properties.

“It’s especially surprising that a charity would behave like this.”

Mr Mitchell, 50, said a man with a young family recently moved out because he was “so unhappy” and that a woman in her 80s living upstairs no longer had access to the outside space.

In a statement to the News, a spokesperson for the Corporation of Trinity House said the charity had accepted the claim for the freehold of the building, but that residents had been offered a licence to use the garden rather than the freehold.

“The Upper Tribunal ruled that the residents were not entitled to acquire the freehold, but were entitled to a permanent right to use the garden,” the charity said.

“The Corporation of Trinity House is appealing this, and their appeal is being heard in November, hence the reason The Corporation of Trinity House have revoked the licence to access the garden in the meantime.

“One break-glass lock was installed on the back exit of the building; this lock legally complies with all fire safety regulations.

“The only issue that remains outstanding is the question of what type of licence the residents have over the garden and this will not impact on the price [for the freehold of the building] that has been agreed with the residents.”

GARAGES AT an estate in Elephant and Castle have become a “safe place” for rough sleepers doing hard drugs, a resident has said.

Richard Reynolds, who has lived at Perronet House for thirteen years, told the News a lack of security and “neglect” by Southwark Council had seen the tower block’s garages deteriorate.

“These garages have been neglected for years, during which we have seen the prevalence of rough sleepers,” Richard said.

“The number has increased, even in the height of summer, when it’s usually much more common during winter.

You see them doing hard drugs, leaving needles, and leaving their detritus on the ground.

“I normally encounter them at 8:30am when I’m going to work, taking my daughter to nursery or getting my bike.

“I saw five today, and it’s not all the same people you see down here. I think word must have got out amongst the rough sleeping community that this is a

safe place to go, that there’s nothing to stop them.”

The 40-year-old said “large groups” of rough sleepers also “congregate” in a separate but empty area that is adjacent to the garages under Perronet House – a space which Richard said was “going to waste”.

Councillor Stephanie Cryan, Southwark Council;s cabinet member for housing, said: “We have had issues with antisocial behaviour here and we

are looking into long term solutions for the garages as well as continuing to deal with the problems as they arise.”

Richard added: “You also have the rat problem, which is nothing to do with security. You can hear them scuttling around and find their dead bodies.” Though Richard recently learnt that a cleaner has been tasked with visiting to dispose of the rats more regularly.

SOUTHWARK IS one of the worst places for alcohol-related incidents in the capital, figures have revealed.

Paramedics were called out to 292 alcohol-related incidents in Southwark last year during August alone.

And the borough had more than 3,051 recorded incidents throughout the entire year.

Figures released by the London Ambulance Service also showed that over 6,650 people were treated by ambulance crews after drinking too much in August 2016 – compared to less than 6,000 in December 2016.

Assistant director of operations for south east London Darren Farmer said: “These figures just underline the significant impact alcoholrelated incidents have not just on Southwark, but across the whole of the capital.

“It is no longer a weekend phenomenon as our crews have to respond to alcohol-related calls every day of the week, taking resources away from those who need us most.

“There is then an impact on operations in Southwark as ambulances are taken off the road to be cleaned and disinfected.

“While we are treating patients who have had too much to drink – others, who are potentially seriously ill or injured, could be waiting for our help.

“A lot of the alcohol-related incidents we respond to don’t need an ambulance – they need a friend to take responsibility to get them home safely and look after them.”

Other boroughs recorded as hot spots for alcohol-related incidents included Westminster with 4,830 incidents, Camden with 3,427, Lambeth with 3,419, and the City of London and Hackney with 3,272.

A TOWER block will provide 88 homes on the former site of a Southwark charity, plans have revealed.

The existing Bede Centre, in Abbeyfield Road, Bermondsey, will be demolished and replaced with a part nine-storey and part six-storey housing block if plans are approved.

The spine of the new building – which is to be called Abbeyfield House – will have nine storeys, while the wings of the building will have six storeys.

The community charity will be relocated to the bottom of nearby Maydew House.

The plans come as part of a wider development to revamp the Abbeyfield Estate, which will be completed in four phases.

As part of the work, the ground floor and existing144 flats in Maydew House will be renovated, the outside of the building will be reclad, and a five-storey residential extension will be built to provide more homes.

Damory House and Thaxted Court will have two storey extensions built and will be reclad, and landscaping work will be carried out on the public space surrounding Bradley House.

The plans come as part of the council’s commitment to provide 1,500 council homes by 2018 for social rent, with a total of 11,000 new homes by 2043.

PECKHAM BERMONDSEY: A brewery will throw open its tap room doors for a special brunch featuring a menu by a Michelin-trained chef.

SOUTHWARK: parkrun is encouraging people with hearing and sight difficulties to get involved in the free weekly event.

A sign language interpreter helped give a briefing before the timed 5k run on Saturday morning (August 19) to runners who were deaf or hard of hearing.

Run director Lynda Cameron, 29, said the team at Southwark parkrun always strived to be as inclusive as possible. “parkrun has really been driving to make its events as inclusive as possible and we really live by that in Southwark,” the pharmacist, who has been a regular at the event for the past two years, said ahead of the run.

“In line with that, we had a request from Parallel London [the world's first fully inclusive mass participation event] to ask whether they could come along this weekend.

“We thought we need to be as inclusive as possible so we put the call out to see if anybody could sign for us.”

Any visually or physically-impaired runners are also encouraged to try out the event – but Lynda advised it would be useful to check out the course first.

“We pride ourselves on being inclusive and hope to be as inclusive as possible every Saturday,” she said.

PECKHAM’S MULTI-storey car park will be ringing with the sounds of horns again this weekend - as the BBC Proms returns.

The Multi-Story Orchestra is returning to the car park - now home to Frank’s Cafe and the Bold Tendencies art group - after a critically acclaimed performance last year.

The performance, on Saturday,

August 26, will also be broadcast live on Radio 3.

Peckham children will give their first Proms performance as part of the orchestra’s new membership drive, launched this year. The orchestra must fundraise over £100,000 every year to keep going, and is dependent on the generosity of local supporters.

After years of hard work, Year 13 pupils tore open their results last Thursday, August 17, to find out whether they’d bagged the grades they’d been anticipating all summer.

done enough to start the apprenticeship or training they’d hoped for. And some schools were over the moon to achieve their best ever Year 13 results to date.

Provisional results suggest that the overall pass rate in Southwark has remained stable at 98.7 per cent – which is above the national average.

The biggest increase in attainment was recorded in the number of entries achieving A*-A grades.

STUDENTS AT St Saviour’s and St Olave’s School gained places at a range of top institutions, including Oxford and Cambridge.

About fifty per cent of the Alevels were at A*-B grade and overall four out of five A-levels were graded C or above.

KINGSDALE FOUNDATION School, in Dulwich, believes one of its students achieved the best A-level results in the country.

Jacob Lundie-Fallon achieved an incredible five A*s at A-level, following on from his success at GCSE with fifteen A* grades, and has accepted a place at Oxford University to read medicine.

The school achieved its best set of A-level results this year, with notable performances from two students who secured places at Oxford and five heading off to study medicine.

Hareef’s off to study medicine WALWORTH BOY Hareef Asunramu achieved three A*s and an A. He is now off to Imperial College to read medicine, having studied Biology, Maths, Chemistry and Latin at A-level.

Hareef joined Christ’s Hospital boarding school in West Sussex when he was eleven. The school was founded in 1552, and pupils wear traditional Tudor uniforms of blue ankle-length coats and saffron-yellow socks. He was given a place after receiving a bursary for his tuition fees.

Globe’s pupils ALL offered uni places

ARK GLOBE Academy in Elephant and Castle only opened its sixth form in September 2015, but its results are already “well above the national average”.

Its batch of A-level results showed a 100 per cent pass rate, with all its students getting at least three E grades. And 47 per cent of students earned three A*-B grades, up from 30 per cent last year.

What’s more, 100 per cent of students were offered a place at a university. And 60 per cent secured places at elite Russell Group universities – compared to the national average of 23 per cent.

Aspiring solicitor Abibat Bashorun bagged an A*AB in History, Sociology and English Literature, and will study Law at Warwick. She was grateful to her teachers, whom she said “pushed her” and put “high expectations” on them.

Alex Nicholson from East Dulwich got AAA in Biology, Maths and Physics. He told the News: “I’m going to Warwick to do Bio-Medical Science. I really liked the look of the course and it’s a really nice campus. I didn’t know what to expect with my grades, I only needed BBB so I would’ve just been happy with that.”

Zareen Roy-Macauley from Rotherhithe said she and her family were all screaming when an offer came through from the University of Cambridge.

The student told the News: “My cousin kept me up until 6am thinking

about it. Then at 7am I get a message saying I’d been at accepted at Cambridge.

“There’s eight of us in our house and we were all screaming. It was like a domino effect through the house.

“I have family in America and in Sierra Leone, and we told them and they were screaming.”

Zareen will go to King’s College and study Human, Social and Political Sciences (HSPS).

“I was impressed by the course, I

wasn’t really thinking about the prestige of going there,” she said.

“I think my interest in politics was nurtured in school. In this environment and being from a background where there’s social issues a lot of people go through, it’s something I wanted to understand more about.

“I was slowly introduced to politics through school – we had EU debates and general election debates.”

She added: “I’m going to celebrate with a meal with my family, and maybe a party. It might be rowdy, but I think I should let my hair down for results day.”

Globe’s principal, Matt Jones, told the News: “Many of these students will be the first in their family to go to university. The context at our school is we’re in an area where a high proportion of pupils are from disadvantaged backgrounds.

“Grades are important, but they are only a stepping stone towards good futures and careers. So our school emphasises the journeys our pupils are taken on.

“This is only our second year of having a sixth form, and despite the change to the A-level results we’re getting outstanding results.”

Walworth Academy figures up

WALWORTH ACADEMY’S cohort of 40 students managed a slight improvement on last year’s set of A-level and Btec results.

This year’s students – its tenth after opening in 2007 – achieved 51 per cent A*-B grades, up one per cent on last year.

And 100 per cent of its students managed to pass with three A*-E grades, also up one per cent from 2016.

And it was also a 100 per cent pass rate for students who took on four A-levels.

One of the Academy’s top performers, Patrick Lowney, scored AAB in Art, English Literature and History, and will be off to Camberwell College of Art to study Animation and Photography.

“The last two years have had ups and downs but I’m glad I came here. The last two years have challenged me, and at times it got a bit much, but I’m proud of how I’ve done,” Patrick said.

Meanwhile, Courtney Huggans was looking forward to celebrating with a night out, after getting three As and a Distinction* for her Business Btec.

She told the News she had only passed two subjects (Maths and English) in her GCSEs, but felt she had to turn it around in sixth form. She’s now off to study Criminology and Business at Liverpool University.

Ochuko Toweh was happy with his grades: ABB in History, Sociology and Economics, but his story makes them all the more impressive.

He’s the eldest of four siblings, in a family of six, who lived on the Lettsom Estate in Camberwell.

But two years ago, whilst he was head boy of the Academy’s secondary school, Ochuko’s family were dealt a cruel hand, and found themselves homeless due to “a disagreement” between their landlord and Southwark Council.

The family moved from different temporary accommodation in places as far away as Woolwich and Chadwell Heath in north east London.

But Ochuko is now thankful his family have been given residence on the Aylesbury Estate.

“It was a tough time, but I’m through it now. Ark has taught me resilience. I had a lot of support from the school.”

When the News spoke to him on results-day morning, he was looking to gain a place with Queen Mary University to study History and Politics.

Another student won a place on a Law course, despite being her mother’s carer and looking after her brother and sister during her exams.

Olayinka ‘Yinka’ Daniel told the News her time at school had become a place of comfort, arriving at 8am and often staying until 7pm.

“The school became my home,” the eighteen-year-old said. “I worked so hard because I wanted to make my mum proud and I wanted to beat my

Bacon’s pupils get 77% A-C

BACON’S COLLEGE was pleased with its performance of a 77 per cent A*-C pass rate this year.

Staff and students’ hard work paid off to produce an average grade of C+ across A-level and Level 3 vocational results.

22.5 per cent of the grades at Bacon’s were A*-A grades, while the A*-C pass rate was 77.4 per cent.

Seventy nine students applied to university this year, out of a cohort of 90 students.

Students will take up offers of university places in a diverse range of courses and disciplines, including sports management, game design and development, and cosmetic design in addition to subjects such as criminology, astrophysics, dental hygiene and mechanical engineering.

Three students will go on to study abroad, including Ayllin SchoengutHecker who will study chemical engineering at Lafayette College, in Pennsylvania.

ONE STUDENT at St Thomas the Apostle College, in Nunhead was over the moon to have achieved seven A-levels.

Emanuele Guidu achieved two A*s, three As and two Bs and will take up a scholarship at the University of Chicago.

Emmanuel Adepoju achieved A*s in maths and further maths and an A in physics and is going on to study mechanical engineering.

And Lydia Kadiri’s AAB grades mean she will be going to Nottingham University to study medical physiology and therapeutics.

The rest of the Year 13 students were also celebrating after 32 per cent achieved A*-A, 54 per cent achieved A*-B, and 30 per cent achieved grades AAB, including two facilitating subjects.

The school wished the students well as they go on to study undergraduate degrees in chemical engineering, law, economics, pharmacy, PPE

(philosophy, politics and ethics) and maths, among many others.

Headteacher Eamon Connolly said: “I am delighted for each and every one of our students for these excellent results; both those who have been with us since the age of eleven and those who joined our new sixth form in 2015.

“I am proud of the achievements and feel confident we have prepared them, both academically and personally, to enter adulthood and embark on their chosen degrees as fine young men and women.”

When she opened her results on Thursday, they showed she had made a dramatic turn – earning AAB in Economics, Psychology and English Literature. Now she is going to City University in Farringdon to study Law. “I love arguing,” Yinka said, “I want to do Corporate Law or Criminal Law. “But I’m going to stay living at home.

And my work rate is going to carry on like it was this year.”

Char ter celebrates highest grades

THE CHARTER School, in Dulwich celebrated its best ever Alevel and BTEC results.

74 per cent of students achieved at least one A grade or equivalent and 25 per cent achieved all A grades or higher.

It is expected that the vast majority of students will take up a place at their first choice of university or college for further study, including students heading to Oxford and Cambridge.

Almost half (46 per cent) of all A level grades achieved at The Charter

School this year were A*/A, and almost three quarters (73 per cent) were A*- B – up from 67 per cent in 2016.

100 per cent of BTEC grades achieved were Distinction*/Distinction and 50 per

cent of all students gained at least three A levels with A* to B grades (up from 41 per cent in 2016).

Headteacher Christian Hicks said: “These are absolutely outstanding Alevel and BTEC results and are down to the perseverance and focus on

excellence shown by all of our students and their teachers. The results are especially pleasing given the fact that many of the subjects have had to teach a brand new curriculum over the past two years following the government’s exam reforms.”

Alleyn’s sixth formers ‘Amazing results’ at St Michael’s have best A* results AT ST MICHAEL’S Catholic College, in Bermondsey, staff and students were overjoyed after building on last year’s results for both academic and vocational courses.

SIXTH FORMERS and staff at coeducational school Alleyn’s, in Dulwich, were left smiling from ear to ear after achieving their best ever set of A* results.

This year, 39 per cent of grades were A*s and 77 per cent were either A* or A. Overall, 92 per cent of all grades achieved were A*, A, or B. It was a standout performance for the school, with almost 60 per cent of the students achieving at least three A grades, and 27 individual students gaining three A* grades or better.

Headteacher Dr Gary Savage said: “I am delighted for our boys and girls, their parents, and for our community all of whom work so hard to support, steer and encourage the students to enable them to achieve such fantastic outcomes.

“Our Leavers of 2017 have achieved a record-breaking proportion of A* grades, which is incredibly impressive.

“Crucially, all our boys and girls also leave us with a kind and positive outlook, strengthened over the years by our enduring school ethos which equally values the cocurriculum, the building of character and the forging of lifelong

friendship.

“Alleyn’s is undoubtedly one of the very best co-educational schools in the country, and I am very proud indeed of what is being achieved here.”

Results show 38 per cent of students achieved an A or A* grade across all subjects, and 58 per cent of all A-level grades were A*-B. The college commended Thomas Mulligan, who gained a place at Oxford University to read Law at St Edmund Hall College, saying it was an “exceptional achievement”.

Staff also congratulated the Year 13 students who will begin their undergraduate studies in subjects such as law, history, business management, economics, and mechanical engineering at prestigious institutions, including Exeter, Warwick, Newcastle, Loughborough, Southampton, Queen Mary, Surrey and Kent.

This means students will be attending both Russell Group and 1994 universities from September.

Zoe Ubom will study business management at Queen Mary University of London after achieving an A* in business, an A in Spanish, and a C in geography. “I was happy with the A* and the A,” said the eighteen-year-old, who lives in Bermondsey. “My parents are excited to see me go to university.”

Holly Lancaster, also eighteen, will study history at the University of Southampton after achieving an A grade A-level in the subject.

“I was shocked because I didn’t expect

to do that well,” said Holly, who also gained an A* in business and an A in philosophy and ethics.

“My mum went to uni recently but I’m the first to go straight out of school.”

Ryan Bellenie plans to study philosophy at Newcastle University after gaining A grades in both media and business and a B in philosophy and ethics. “I was relieved when I opened my results,” said the eighteen-year-old.

“I hadn’t been worrying about them as much but I didn’t look at my UCAS, I just came in because I wanted to do it the fun way.”

Laura Szomanska walked away from sixth form with five A-levels. The eighteen-year-old will read Law at Exeter University after achieving four A grades in history, Law, Polish, and the extended project, and a B in philosophy and ethics. “I just didn’t believe it,” she said of opening her results. “It still feels weird; I called my dad straight away

Jake Fernandes is off to study computer science at Warwick University after gaining an A* in maths and A grades in further maths, Italian, and Spanish. “My heart stopped when I opened the results and then I was excited to be going to university,” said the eighteen-year-old.

Emily Byrne will study history at Warwick after achieving an A* in history and A grades in philosophy and ethics, and maths. “I was surprised at the maths results because I got a B last year and that was on the easier papers,” said the teenager. I’m really surprised but happy. I’m very happy with the A* in history – it’s my favourite subject.”

Headteacher Grainne Grabowski said: “We have amazing results again this year and it’s all down to the hard work and commitment of the pupils and the dedication of all the staff of St Michael’s who give up their time.”

‘Remarkable achievement’ for Sacred Heart pupils

STAFF AND students at Sacred Heart Catholic College, in Camberwell, were celebrating after a third of all entries achieved A* and A grades this year.

All Year 13 pupils (87 pupils) sat Alevel exams, with 98 per cent of entries graded between A* and E. One third of all of entries achieved A* and A grades, and 60 per cent achieved a grade between A* and B. Results showed that 37 per cent of pupils gained three A-levels at A*-B. Headteacher Serge Cefai said: “I am very proud of all our pupils and their A-level results which have ensured that 98 per cent of our cohort will be attending university or a higher level apprenticeship.

“This is a remarkable achievement in the current climate of higher grade boundaries and new A-level courses.”

In the following subjects, over 80 per cent of pupils gained an A*-B grade: Art (83 per cent); business (100 per cent); economics (84 per cent); further maths (100 per cent) geography (100 per cent); graphics (100 per cent); history (100 per cent); Italian (100 per cent); Portuguese (100 per cent); sociology (86 per cent); Spanish (86 per cent). JAMES ALLEN’S Girls’ School’s (JAGS) Year 13 cohort celebrated a 100 per cent pass rate in their Alevels.

Around a third of all A-level grades at the Dulwich school were A*s, 70 per cent of all grades were either A* or A, and 91 per cent were A* to B. Almost half of the students at the school achieved at least three A*s or As. Success was achieved in a wide range of languages, from French to Russian, to Japanese and more in between.

English was also a notable success with over 90 per cent passing at A* or A. Headteacher Sally Anne Huang said: “It’s once again a real privilege to see JAGS pupils gaining these excellent results and hearing their exciting plans for the next stage of their lives.

in maths and physics. “The grades themselves were what I was predicted – but not what I was predicted for the particular subjects,” he said. “I was predicted an A* in maths so I was surprised and confused. I didn’t even personally think I’d get an A* so I’m very happy.”

Anta-Abigail Jagne, nineteen, said her fingers were shaking as she opened the envelope containing her results. She will read law at Northampton University – and said she was looking forward to a new adventure. “At first I was fixated on staying in London but I thought why not travel out and go far away from home; it will be an adventure,” she said.

Raha Mahamoud has been accepted to SOAS (the School of Oriental and African Studies) School of Law and plans to do human rights law, specialising in Asian and African communities.

She opened her results to find she had achieved an A in sociology and Bs in psychology and English Literature.

“When I opened my results I was so happy to see my grades, especially since it was a new spec this year and didn’t have past papers,” said the nineteen-yearold, from Peckham.

Jibi Ashimi, nineteen, was over the moon with his BTEC results after making the difficult decision to abandon the A-levels he was studying at another college and move to CoLA to start again.

He walked away with a Distinction* in sports science and two Distinctions in business and ICT. “I’m hoping to do an apprenticeship and I should have one soon,” said the Bermondsey student. I want to do accounting or finance and I’m open to being outside London. I was just relieved to see my results and my mum was happy that I managed to get good grades.”

Head girl Faaria will read engineering at Oxford, having gained A*s in maths and further maths, A grades in physics and chemistry, and an A in Latin at AS level.

“I’ve always loved maths and science,” she said. “I know it will be difficult but I want to focus on automotive engineering. I might even work in Formula 1!

“The sixth form at JAGS is the place to be. You really value your education so much more when you’ve worked hard for it.

“I appreciate now what the staff have done for me; it’s been an incredible journey.”

Clodagh, who achieved A*s in English and maths, and A grades in religious studies and French, will head to Cambridge to read Law. “I realised it combined logical analysis, debating skills and stylised language – all aspects of my A-levels I enjoy,” she said of her chosen degree subject.

“I love religious studies and the role of religious parallel legal systems and how religion interacts with the law is fascinating.”

Student Aliyah will take up a two-year apprenticeship with the Civil Service, working for HMRC. “I took A levels in politics, French, and maths, and an AS level in chemistry,” said Aliyah.

“My end goal is to work in politics and I think I will have so much more life experience from this scheme, having worked alongside people of all ages. It has opened my eyes to other options.”

GED JUST 21 my granddad was at the D-Day landings.

He was one of the British soldiers who liberated the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp and saw first-hand the enormity of the horror the Nazis imposed. His whole generation gave everything they had to defeat fascism – including those back home like my nan working in a munitions factory and everyone in Southwark who withstood the ferocious Luftwaffe bombings.

So to see Americans flying the Nazi flag in Charlottesville recently is sickening and an insult to the American forces who joined Commonwealth fighters across the globe to defeat fascist regimes. Trump should have condemned it wholeheartedly. That he didn’t is beyond reasoning. Any strong UK leader would also be able to demand greater action from their US counterpart.

Theresa May cannot ask Trump to condemn neo-Nazis because of her own extraordinarily weak position. She is hamstrung on the international stage by Brexit. She knows leaving the EU, our biggest trading partner and the wealthiest economic bloc on the planet, means she will need a new agreement with the US. If the UK crashes out of the EU without a deal, even WTO rules will not help some sectors. The Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) is based near London Bridge and is extremely worried about flights not even being able to operate.

Thousands of Brits head to the States every year but in under two years no flights could be taking off: that is the sad reality of Brexit.

Last week we witnessed another murderous atrocity in Barcelona. This attack left at least 13 innocent civilians dead, including seven year old British citizen Julian Cadman. Europe has faced increasingly cowardly terrorists deliberately targeting children, like in Manchester. In June our community was targeted when depraved murderers killed civilians near London Bridge. Despite pressure, the Government is yet to offer financial support and some insurance providers still have not paid out. I am seeing the Economic Secretary to the Treasury soon to discuss this disgraceful situation.

The rise in attacks comes after seven years of police cuts and reductions in their powers, as London Mayor Sadiq Khan demonstrated last week. Since 2010 our community has lost over 200 PCSOs and police officers and the Met is short of 700 detectives across London. I am very worried that our Government is failing to ensure the police have the resources to tackle knife and moped crime, as well as deal with the growing international terror threat.

Council needs to spend money on its website HAVING READ the article in the News about Southwark purchasing Iphones and Ipads for staff members, I was wondering if they are going to invest in improving their website programmes?

I have used the website twice in two weeks and on both occasions I found it outdated and very frustrating.

The first time I used the site was to contact the housing repairs team (Tenants are constantly encouraged to use the website to report or request services, stating it is quicker). I went through the online form to make my repair request when it got to a point where it said I would have to ring the team on the number supplied? I duly rang the number to be informed by a recording while waiting for my call to be answered that it would be much more efficient to use the website?

Apparently the website was not capable of processing my particular request.

The second time I went to the website was to buy an Estate Visitor’s Parking Permit. Again an online form which charts your progress on completion, the form requires lots of information, you then choose the amount of permits you want to purchase, then method of payment. Here we go! Cheque or Card? Card - you are not directed to a payment screen ie Visa, Paypal, Worldpay you are requested to give your contact number so you can be contacted within five working days to give your card details then the permit will be posted (1st Class) to your home address!

What a nonsense, why can't this process be like all other online purchases, pay by card, download the permit?

Southwark either want its residents to use its website for services or not, but this mixture of half and half systems is maddening.

By all means get good up to date equipment for staff to be able to give an efficient service, but you must have the systems in place for residents to be able to tap into those services the "modern" way all or nothing.

WITH BREXIT talks underway, I am sure all Londoners are wondering what will happen over the coming few years.

As a London MEP I have been touring different parts of the city answering some of many questions people have as part of a series of Listening to London events.

However, I know that many people have not been able to get to these.

As the most senior elected British politician in Brussels I am acting as a bridge between our government and the EU during these talks. I think it’s essential that people get their chance to be heard as we move forward.

Young patients have their say on care

MORE THAN 50 young people shared their ideas on how their time in hospital could be improved at Evelina London Children’s Hospital's annual Inspiring Youth Conference last Friday 18 August.

The conference saw current and former Evelina London patients,

aged eight to 20, suggest how young people could have a better experience in hospital.

The event, which was held for the first time last year and run by the Evelina London engagement team, also showcased the work of young people making a difference to others in the hospital and in the wider community.

Eli Russell, 14, who was one of the young patients to attend the conference, said: “I’m really happy to have been invited to the conference because I wanted to have an impact on the hospital that has supported me so much as a patient.

“It means a lot that we can work together with Evelina London to help improve the hospital, and give them our perspective on decisions that will affect our care.”

There were a range of presentations at the conference, including how medical students and doctors can better understand and communicate with young patients in hospital, and what steps the hospital can take to ensure young people receive the highest quality of care, whether they are seen in services designed for children or adults.

At the conference Hannah Thorpe, 20, shared her experience of being a young person on an adult ward, having been admitted to hospital with a serious blood clot while she was a university student.

She said: “Being diagnosed with a blood clot was a real shock, especially at a young age, and it was mentally and physically draining having to be admitted to hospital whilst studying.

Thankfully, the care at the hospital was amazing, and the staff, and other support groups such as Thrombosis UK, really helped me know that I wasn’t alone. I was delighted to speak at the conference, because I wanted to let other young people know that illness may be a part of your life, but it doesn’t have to be your whole life.”

S THE summer holidays draw to a close, parents and children are starting to prepare for the return to school.

If you have a child who suffers from asthma, you would be advised to think about this too, amid the business of new uniforms, bags, etc.

This is because mid-September is the peak time of year for asthma attacks in children, triggered by them coming into contact with viruses during the first two weeks back at school.

Over the school holidays, when people are out of their usual routines, it can be easy to overlook the everyday habits we do automatically – such as using preventer inhalers. This means when children return to school, they are often not fully prepared for the viruses that they are exposed to when they are back in the closed environment.

Asthma can be triggered by many things including pollen, perfumes, animal hair and fur, tobacco and common cold and flu viruses. Children without asthma may have a runny nose, sneezing or mild cough. In children with asthma who are susceptible to viruses, the symptoms can cause excessive inflammation of airways which causes a narrowing of breathing tubes, leading to wheezing and difficulty in breathing.

The best way of avoiding this for children with asthma is to make sure the airways can’t over-react to the triggers – which means using the preventer inhaler every day, even if they feel well.

The preventer is usually brown, but can be other colours – however a ‘preventer’ is never blue, this is the ‘rescue’ inhaler for when attacks happen.

If you think your child needs a preventer inhaler, contact your GP surgery. If you or your child is not sure how to use an inhaler properly, ask a local pharmacist to show you how.

Good hand hygiene will also help reduce the risk of infection once children are back at school and it’s not too early to think about getting a flu vaccine. Children with asthma can become very ill if they catch flu, but it’s recommended for all.

ARTDOG BRING both art and music to Shortwave Cafe with Dan Hillier’s unique blend of combining Victorian sensibilities with a fascination for animal attributes, writes Michael Holland...

His work is characterised by depictions of fantastical human/animal hybrids, spliced together with late-1800s imagery.

His images can have an unsettling effect as they blur distinctions normally implied by reality. His work featured in the Louis Vuitton Marc Jacobs show in Les Musee des Arts Decoritifs in the Louvre, Paris, and the Natural History Museum in Turin, Italy. His work can be seen at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre and he recently had a solo show at The Saatchi Gallery in London.

Along with the artworks Jay Johnson, an award-winning musician and songwriter, will play two live acoustic sets at the opening of the exhibition.

Jay’s naturally curious mind first led him to start learning the cello, he then taught himself how to play guitar. He started listening to artists such as Bob Dylan, Paolo Nutini, and Ben Howard from his early teens and as a result their influences

can often be heard in his own original work.

The young musician began busking on the streets of London. A year later he began performing at pubs, venues and festivals. After the experience of playing to live crowds, he abandoned his plans of

becoming a doctor and decided to become a full-time musician.

Salad Days the healthy option

I'M NOT fond of salad.

Leaves are all well and good, but on balance best left to rabbits. However, thanks to the excellent production of 'Salad Days' at least I'll get one of my five a day, writes Matt Baker...

The superb Union Theatre has once again pulled off a corker.

Salad Days is a celebration of youth and music that will put a smile on your face. Set in a golden age where people spoke posh and dancing in public was a social no no, this really was a fun night.

We follow the fortunes of a group of university graduates who return to humdrum lives after the excitement of three years in the bosom of higher education to discover life is duller than expected. Things pick up when a mysterious stranger asks them to look after a strange piano with unexpected consequences. It turns out this piano is a bit special.

Anybody listening will break out into involuntary dancing. Fun and shenanigans ensue, with the country enthralled by the dancing that accompanies the tinkling of the magic ivories.

A study in generational differences populated with splendidly catchy tunes, I defy anyone not to enjoy it.

Hilarious and heart warming in equal measure I highly recommend this as an antidote to the terrifying state of the world.

t all began with some fun banter between pizza bakers operating just yards from each other, with one Tweeting, ‘We do the best pizzas in the Elephant & Castle’, which was quickly countered with, ‘No, you don’t!’, writes Michael Holland...

I then put my nose in telling them they should have a ‘bake off’, which they both agreed to.

Firstly, let me state there is no such thing as ‘the best’ in food as we all have different tastes. My personal opinion of pizza, for example, is that it is basically jumped up cheese on toast, a snack, and not something to get excited about.

Others, I understand, take pizza much more seriously.

For Round One I took along my pizza expert, Haydn, aged 10. Now this boy has a palate that ranges from sashimi to Slush Puppies, and from octopus to Oreos , so knows what he likes and is always prepared to give something a go to see if he likes it.

We arrived at Elephantastic Pizza to be welcomed with smiles and handshakes from owner Kyle, and with Gil Scott Heron putting the world to rights on the radio. A good start.

After scanning the menu my pizza partner went for the Olivia. It came with a topping of Olives, Capers, Anchovies all strong, distinctive flavours - plus Cherry Tomatoes to balance it out.

I chose the Fiorella, which was topped with Napoli Salami, Chorizo and Ventricina, a pork-based meat. Both pizzas, which we shared, had generous toppings and strong tastes. With the spice of the meats coming through, and the saltiness of the anchovies, they were not for wimps. The thin base and crispy crust meant that we did not have to wade through mouthfuls of dough, which is a definite plus in my book - as was the white wine to help it all go down.

Elephantastic Pizza do the customary 12in pizza, plus a 9 inch version for light lunchers, which is the size we had and found they were the perfect size. I don’t think I would have wanted another 3 inches for lunch! There was also a bottle of homemade chilli oil on each table that looked quite tempting, but our pizzas had all the bite we needed - the memory lingered on the tastebuds long after we’d left for home.

Kyle Shearer is a local who has worked in the food industry for many years, so when premises at Artworks became available for small business start ups he was one of the first ones to apply. He tells me he has built a good customer base but cannot be resting on his laurels with all the competition around - You can eat from all corners of the world within a 500 yard radius of his bijou pizzeria so Kyle has to keep on top of the game. He let slip that he could soon be providing pizza to new Bermondsey bar, Shortwave Cafe, which will be good for business and good for Shortwave Cafe. Elephantastic Pizza has clearly demonstrated how the upcycled freight containers that make up Artworks are an ingenious way to create low rent premises that are ideal for the small businessperson.

The more recent addition to Artworks is Lost Rivers, which is not a small business by any stretch of the imagination and appears to have taken over several containers, erected a sturdy marquee for a bar and live music, and has access to ample space for al fresco dining and drinking. This is most definitely a music bar but as much as the raw, knockedtogether-with-bits-of-old-wood look is attractive to many people, Lost Rivers is

made admirable attempts.

So who is best? Me and my pizza partner had different likes and dislikes: he preferred Lost Rivers’ Simply Salami, while my favourite was Elephantastic Pizza’s Olivia, so you need to get to Artworks and try for yourselves.

as corporate as it gets. Big money has been spent here, the website is a work of art, they even have a separate container for a box office to sell tickets for their live events that seem to be going on every day, and those extra overheads have gone onto the prices.

Haydn and me visited on a Friday afternoon to sample the pizzas of the company that has been brought in to cook them: Barrel & Stone. They are thin base, though not as thin as Elephantastic, and there is just one size pizza here - 12in.

Haydn went for the Simply Salami (Napoli Salami, La Bella San Morazano Tomato, Fior di Latte Mozzarella). It was

good; I love a stringy cheese that doesn’t want to let go when you lift a slice out. I chose the Sweet ’n’ Tangy (Goat’s Cheese. Peppadew Papers, Pesto, La Bella San Morazano Tomato). Once again a good pizza. The cheese doesn’t cook as well as mozzarella, though, and mine went a bit ‘cottage-cheesey’ in taste and texture, but that’s what goat’s cheese does. The pesto added another dimension of flavour to the experience, which worked. As did the pint of Neckinger, named after a river that runs beneath my home town of Bermondsey (Hence Lost Rivers). The extra three inches meant we struggled to finish, although but we both

OF ALL the heroes, heroines and famous faces Southwark has produced, none can claim to have made such a tangible difference to people’s lives across the world, as Sir James Black OM.

The Scottish-born scientist and former Herne Hill dweller was the Nobel Prize for Physiology in 1988, for his sole contribution to the creation of two major drug types: beta blockers and anti-ulcer histamines.

From 1958, whilst working for the ICI Pharmaceuticals company, Black helped develop Propranolol, used to treat heart disease. Propranolol belonged to the category of drugs known as beta blocks, which help slow a patient’s heart rate by reducing overproduction of the adrenaline hormone.

His discovery of the drug is considered one of the greatest breakthroughs in heart disease treatment, and is counted amongst the most important contributions to medical science and pharmacology of the 20th century.

After his death in 2010, the Economist summed up the achievement saying: “Anyone who has tasted the stress of modern life—who has got up, bolted a coffee, run for the train, missed the connection, come late for the meeting, raced through the presentation, lunched on a lager and a greasy burger—has reason to be grateful to Sir James Black.

For Sir James invented the little white or pink capsule of the beta-blocker

His discovery of the drug is considered one of the greatest breakthroughs in heart disease treatment Propranolol.”

His work saved tens of thousands of lives. In 1978, 255 in every 100,000 British men aged 35-74 died of coronary heart disease; by 2007, that figure had fallen to 65. By the time Sir James died, Propranolol was also being used to treat post-traumatic-stress disorder.

Sir James’ second great contribution was his invention of the anti-ulcer histamine, Cimetidine. It prevented the growth of peptic ulcers by reducing the production of stomach acid. Cimetidine quickly outsold propranolol to become the world's highest-selling prescription drug.

Before taking up residence in Half Moon Lane, he had spent seven years at King’s College Hospital’s campus with the Wellcome Foundation – from 1977 to 1984.

In an autobiographical piece for the Nobel Foundation’s series of publications, Les Prix Nobel, Sir James said of his time with Wellcome: “It offered me the chance to establish a small academic research unit, modestly

funded, but with total independence.

“The real opportunity, however, came from King's College, London. The College and Medical School between them have not only solved problems and smoothed difficulties they have positively welcomed and supported my small unit. In intellectual terms the last five years at King's have been the most productive in my life. Surrounded by talented researchers and PhD students, I feel I have found my niche at last.”

It was in this much-enjoyed time at King’s that national recognition, from beyond just the medical world, came to him with a much-deserved knighthood, in 1981.

Then in 1988 his achievements earned global notoriety as he was bestowed the Nobel Prize in Medicine. Celebration of his achievements continued to snowball, and in 2000 Sir James was made a member of the prestigious Order of Merit.

His occupancy of Herne Hill began in ’88, when his newly-established Sir James Black Foundation made its first home in 68 Half Moon Lane. The

building was renamed The Sir James Black Institute and expanded over to no.

62, 64 and 66.

The history of the site is recorded in a 2013 periodical by the Herne Hill Society, which stated that the building was bought by King’s College Hospital in 1950 for its Department of Botany.

“Using many innovative techniques and original approaches to research, scientists worked to find new candidates for drugs that could be used to treat disease.”

With Sir James’ death in 2010, the foundation was also dissolved, and the building was sadly left vacant.

But only three years later, new life was breathed into Sir James’ old base with the arrival of a new bilingual primary school – Judith Kerr Primary School.

Traces of his legacy can also be found in sites around Camberwell. Sir James Black House in Coldharbour Lane is key-worker accommodation for King’s College Hospital’s staff. King’s College University also owns the James Black Centre in Denmark Hill, where it carries out research in cardiovascular medicine.

SIR JAMES Black is one of seven nominees for this year’s edition of the Southwark Blue Plaques scheme, run by the News in association with Southwark Heritage Association, Southwark Council.

The scheme has commemorated the great and good of our borough by awarding Blue Plaques to over 50 recipients since it began in 2013.

he ‘Bank of Mum and Dad’ will help finance over a quarter of mortgages in the UK in 2017, according to research by Legal and General[1]. The report shows that ‘BOMAD’ is equivalent to the ninth largest mortgage lender in the UK, paying over £6.9bn to help their children onto the property ladder.

Having rented in South and West London for over 10 years, Xiao Wang was keen to get on the ladder, but knew that the property prices in the capital were out of his reach. TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that to enable Bridge Inspection works to be carried out by Centurion Site Services, it made an order the effect of which will be to prohibit vehicular traffic from entering part of the above named road.

Whilst works are in progress, and whilst the authorised traffic signs are displayed, no person shall cause any vehicle to enter, proceed, stop, wait, load or unload in Dartford Street, 10m either side of railway bridge.

The alternative route will be via Dartford Street, John Ruskin Street, Pelier Street, as applicable.

Exemptions will be provided in the Order to permit reasonable access to premises, so far as it is practical without interference with the execution of the said works.

The restrictions will not apply to any vehicle being used in connection with the said works, or for fire brigade, ambulance or police purposes or anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform.

The restriction will be in place on the 5th – 6th September between 22:00hrs and 06:00hrs.

DULWICH HAMLET were affected by injuries and then saw a controversial penalty and wonder strike as they lost to big-spending Billericay Town last weekend.

Hamlet made a bright start, creating a number of chances and hitting the woodwork through Ashley Carew’s deflected strike.

Former Arsenal and Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant was a threat from dead balls, before Town went in front through Billy Bricknell.

Dulwich responded positively to the setback and were quickly level. It was good work on the right from Gavin Tomlin, who was stopped by Leo Chambers with the defender handling the

ball in the box. After a delay for treatment for Tomlin, Carew stepped up and send the goalkeeper the wrong way from the spot.

Addicks snap up Hamlet prospect

Mascoll made his debut in the first round of London Senior Cup in October 2015 in a 1-0 win against Thamesmead Town.

He went on to make eighteen senior appearances for Hamlet, scoring one goal in a League Cup tie.

Mascoll told Dulwich’s official website: “It's a dream come true for me to sign my first professional

contract at Charlton Athletic Football Club.

Injury-time heartache for Fisher

FISHER ARE bottom of the Southern Counties East Football League First Division table after their 2-1 defeat to Punjab United last weekend.

Fisher, who were relegated last season, fell behind to Sam Cuthbert’s goal in the 61st minute at St Paul’s.

Dean Harrison’s side pulled level nine minutes later through Prince Amoah.

A DEPLETED Dulwich side were thoroughly outplayed in their Travelbag Surrey Championship Division 2 match against Bank of England, going down to defeat by 80 runs last weekend.

Dulwich gave their opponents first use of a good batting pitch, only to see them get off to a flying start as 21 runs came off the first two overs from Jon Lodwick and Kamran Munawar. It was Munawar who made the breakthrough in his second over, dismissing Charlie O’Brien, who had made 23 off sixteen balls, with the score on 29 after just 3.2 overs.

The away side went in front with just eighteen minutes left, Bricknell getting his second from the penalty spot after the ball had struck the unlucky Nana BoakyeYiadom’s hand in the box. It was a harsh call as Boakye-Yiadom wasn’t looking at the ball.

Fromer England defender Paul Konchesky was then lucky to stay on the pitch after appearing to be the last man when he took down Nyren Clunis, but he escaped with a booking.

There was more bad luck when Hamlet’s Michael Chambers had his shirt pulled in the box, but the referee waved play on.

And Town compounded that poor decision by scoring a third through an audacious strike from halfway by Jake Robinson, who had spotted goalkeeper Preston Edwards off his line.

Smith topples favourite

RICHARD SMITH won the Grand Final of the Southwark IDL Season IX last Friday night with a superb performance to beat four-time finalist Spencer Ellis and become the ninth different champion in nine seasons.

Ellis went into the match as favourite having earlier defeated Smith, from Leeds, to win his third successive Challenge Cup final, a feat that meant he got to keep the trophy.

Stansfeld started brightly with most of the football being played in the Gravesham half. After fifteen minutes the pressure nearly paid off when Nathan Flahar beat two defenders before crossing deep to Billy Shinners, who crashed a header against the post from a tight angle.

In the 35th minute, against the run of play, Nick Hunt put Gravesham into the lead with a smart finish.

Stansfeld continued to push forward but went into break still trailing. The home side started the second half how they finished the first pushing forward and were rewarded with an equaliser in the 51 minute when Shinners headed in to the top corner from Sam Ryan’s cross.

But within two minutes they were behind again as Daryl Tripp pounced to finish for the visitors.

Stansfeld looked to be heading for defeat, but with ten minutes left Michael McKenna went on a darting run into the box before beating the goalkeeper at his near post.

Although Stansfeld pushed for the winner it was Gravesham who nearly took all three points in the final minute, but they were denied

by Stansfeld stopper Lewis Collier, who made a smart double-save.

The result leaves Stansfeld in eleventh place in the table with four points from three games.

Bank raid sends Dulwich towards relegation decider on 40.

Damon Ridgway and skipper Richard Rawlings now consolidated as the bowling tightened, and the 50 did not come up until the thirteenth over, but they gradually increased the tempo.

With several spin bowling regulars unavailable, former captain Graeme Hough returned to the first team for the first time since 2007, and got off to a good start by conceding just nine runs off his first six overs. But he then came in for some stick as Rawlings went on the rampage, with 35 coming off his last four.

The pair had added 133 for the third wicket off 34.3 overs when both fell in successive overs. Rawlings was the first to go, brilliantly caught by Ross Ewing off Lodwick for 72, off 98 balls.

Ridgway, who had taken 21 balls to get off the mark, succumbed to a juggling catch on the boundary by Assan Crawford-Khan off skipper Alex Gledhill for 71, off 124 balls, with the score on 192 in the 43rd over. The next few batsmen tried to push the score along in the remaining seven overs, resulting in a wicket apiece for Crawford-Khan and Munawar, who returned to finish with 3-43 off his ten overs. A brief cameo by Ed Jones, who hit an unbeaten eighteen off eleven balls, saw his side to 233-6 after their 50 overs.

The Dulwich reply got off to a disastrous start when Ed Stolle was out lbw to the second ball of the innings.

Matt Balch and Kristian Williman then raised hopes by adding 70 in

eighteen overs for the second wicket, before both fell in the same over. Balch was first to go, caught at midwicket after making 26 off 52 balls.

Off the next legitimate ball both batsmen found themselves at the same end, with Williman run out for 34, off 58 balls. Ewing provided a quick sixteen off fourteen balls, but was the next to go with the score on 92, after 23 overs. Lodwick, with nineteen off 40 balls, also kept the score moving, but was the first of five wickets that fell as Dulwich declined from 113-4 to 127-9 in the space of seven overs.

It took a last-wicket stand of 26 between Munawar, who finished unbeaten with 22 off 26 balls, and Hough to lift the score past 150 and gain a batting point that could prove to

be vital at the end of the season. Hough became the fourth lbw of the innings, having made nine off fifteen balls, as Dulwich were dismissed for 153 off the first ball of the 43rd over.

Dulwich gained just two points from a disappointing match and slip one place to eighth, just eleven points ahead of Epsom and thirteen above Bank of England, whose third successive win has given them an unexpected chance of survival.

NEXT WEEK Dulwich travel to Malden Wanderers, who are currently fifth. Dulwich will be looking for the vital win that will steer them away from the threat of relegation.

Wallace settled in south London

JED WALLACE says he feels settled for the first time in his career – and has the house to prove it.

Wallace, 23, made his loan move from Wolves permanent in the summer and has bought property in Biggin Hill, which is just 45 minutes from his parents’ home in Ascot.

Wallace feels being settled off the pitch will bring the best out of him on it.

“This is the first time in three years I feel settled, maybe even in my whole career,” he said. “When I was at Portsmouth it was always touted I was going to move in the next window. When I went to Wolves I didn’t really get going.

“I’ve moved to the area here, bought a house, and that’s going to make me feel settled. I’ve moved a bit out because it’s so expensive.

“I was looking at flats around Bromley but couldn’t believe the prices. I went out the M25 to Biggin Hill. So now I’ve got a nice house and garden rather than a Sky Bet Championship - Saturday August 19

“The fans also know what to expect from me, I know what to expect from them. The manager trusts me and I get on really well with the boys.

“I want us to do really well and I know we will. The boys want to show the manager we can do well at this level.”

Millwall have yet to win a game in the

Championship this season, and Wallace isn’t just happy to take the credit for good performances.

He knows “should have, would have, could have” won’t cut it if they want to rise up the table.

“We make no bones about it, it’s a disappointing start, not what we planned on doing,” he said. “It’s a bit un-Millwalllike, certainly since I’ve been at the club, we’ve usually ground out results.

“It’s a results business and we need to start putting the ball into the back of the

net. But there’s a positive mood around the place and we know we’re more than capable of winning games at this level.

We need to start doing it sooner rather than later.

“You saw in the FA Cup last year, our style of play and attitude, we’ll cause anyone problems. Saturday a draw was probably fair, we had a number of chances, they hit the bar, but it was probably the most even game so far.

“Against Ipswich we didn’t deserve to get anything from the game because we

didn’t defend properly. In the two games before that we were probably the best side. We should be on six or seven points.

“But should have, would have, could have, they’re famous words in football that I don’t really like to use. We have two points and that’s the reality. We have to tighten up at the back and find that quality, myself included, to hurt teams more than we have been doing.”

Wallace was one of seven signings this season, and he believes that the recruitment of the likes of Tom Elliott has brought them on “leaps and bounds”.

An indication of the depth at Neil Harris’ disposal has been the absence of Mahlon Romeo and Ben Thompson from the last two match-day league squads.

Wallace understands it’s difficult for a young player who loses his place, but says everyone will get a chance at some point this season.

“I really feel like we are leaps and bounds as a team from where we were last season. People like Mahlon have been left out of the squad, last year that would have been unthinkable,” Wallace said. “It shows the strength in depth.

“When Mahon and Thommo come back in they won’t let anyone down.

That’s the group we’ve got here. With the senior pros and young players it’s the best mix in a dressing room I’ve been in. There isn’t one player who isn’t hungry to do well at this level.

“It is difficult, I’ve gone through the same thing that Mahlon has gone through.

He trains excellently, he’s a top pro, he’s athletic. It’s still very early days. At the moment there are no injuries but it’s not always going to be like that. Other players will be needed. There are a lot of boys in the dressing room and in the under-23s that are capable of coming in and doing a job.

“The luxury at Millwall is that 100 per cent effort is always enough, even if you’re not having a good game. That takes a bit of pressure off. If I know I’m having a bad game but doing everything I can to help the team, then that’s enough.

That’s a nice luxury to have.”

Lions dominant but have to settle for point

“Last year, no disrespect to anyone, but if Moro [Steve Morison] or Gregs got injured you were thinking we were in big trouble. Now we’ve got big T and Fred [Onyedinma] giving the manager headaches.

“The type of subs we can make – Fred, Fergie, Tom – last season they were three of the best players in the division.

“It shows the strength. The manager has recruited really well. Not only on the pitch, they’re great guys as well and have fitted in really well.”

MILLWALL winger Jed Wallace paid tribute to George Saville and Jordan Archer after the Lions’ 0-0 draw at Bristol City last weekend.

Archer kept his first clean sheet of the season after his mistake last week cost his side in their 4-3 defeat by Ipswich.

Saville, a team-mate of Wallace’s at Wolves, has arguably been Millwall’s best player in the early part of the season.

“Sav’s doing things that, no disrespect to him, I didn’t think he had in his locker,” Wallace said. “He’s absolutely dictated games for us. The manager knew he was capable of that.

“At Wolves it was difficult for him, he got shoved into left-back. You look at how well he’s performed in midfield now and you think how was that even possible.

“He was similar to me in that he got a run in the Wolves team but for some reason people didn’t really take to him.

back from here and people still weren’t having him, which was amazing.

“But he’s done really well and he’ll have a big season. With Willo’s [Shaun Williams] quality on the ball it’s allowed Sav to go and roam. Willo sits in there and it’s a good understanding that the two of them have got.

“Jordan’s a good keeper, you don’t become a good player overnight or a bad

one. Jordan’s played over 100 games for Millwall and if you do that you’re a good player.

“There weren’t even any questions asked of Jordan. We see the attitude of Jordan and Tom King in training. They want to learn and they’re going to go on to have very successful careers.

“There are never questions towards Gregs [Lee Gregory] if he doesn’t hit the

back of the net, there are never any questions towards Sav if he doesn’t win a tackle. The boys know each other, what everyone’s capable of. I think we’re going to have a good season.”

A MUCH-changed Millwall side took Reading to extra-time, but the Lions’ time in the EFL Cup is over this season after defeat at The Madejski Stadium on Tuesday night.

In his third season in charge, Neil Harris’ Lions have again departed the competition before the third round, but that will be of little or no concern.

This was Millwall’s sixth game in eighteen days since the start of the season, ahead of Norwich visiting The Den this Saturday.

It wasn’t until the 116th minute that this tie was put out of Millwall’s reach, and Harris was unhappy that referee Charles Breakspear didn’t award a free-kick for an apparent foul on Jed Wallace on the edge of Reading’s box before the home side broke and Sam Smith finished past Tom King.

Smith had found lots of space because Millwall had switched to three at the back and three up front after George Evans had curled home a beautiful shot into the top left corner in the last minute of the first period of extra-time.

It’s probably difficult to see the point of this competition when the exit comes so early, but Harris’ gripe about the referee was really his only complaint. It was a worthwhile fixture in so many other ways.

Ryan Tunnicliffe finally made his debut and he can be satisfied with his performance before he went off in the 78th minute having expended every bit of energy.

The former Fulham midfielder had worked hard to cover ground as Millwall defended for long periods without the ball, particularly in the first half. After the break Millwall took more of the initiative, and Tunnicliffe showed his ability in possession by bursting through from midfield to almost put Tom Elliott in on goal, before, in the 55th minute, he fired just over from distance.

Despite the defeat, there was a lot to admire from Millwall. Harris changed three of the back four from the draw at Bristol City last weekend. Full-backs Mahlon Romeo and Tony Craig were under a lot of pressure but coped admirably. Romeo in particular put in a tenacious performance, perhaps letting out some of his frustration in

a positive way having missed out on Millwall’s league match-day squads recently.

Jake Cooper, against his former club, was superb, producing a number of exceptionally timed interceptions. Beside him, Byron Webster led well.

Against a Reading side intent on all-out possession, Millwall were organised and disciplined, and rarely was there a player out of position.

But that only made Reading’s opener all the more disappointing.

There didn’t appear to be too much danger when Leandro Bacuna gained possession midway inside Millwall’s half in the 34th minute, but a burst of pace took him through a gap and he lashed a shot from 25 yards past King.

Millwall responded well to that setback. Calum Butcher had started just off Elliott in a tactical change from the usual set-up, and he latched onto Romeo’s pass in the box but saw his low shot saved by Anssi Jaakkola. Shane Ferguson’s corner was half-cleared, Craig hooked it back in and when the ball broke off Elliott, Ferguson took a couple of touches before firing in via a deflection off Bacuna.

Harris felt that changed the game and Millwall certainly were

emboldened. They were notably more aggressive without the ball in the second half, pushing right up in order to not allow goalkeeper Jaakkola start moves from the back.

And then Millwall quickly funnelled back when Reading did get through the first line of defence.

Millwall really should have gone ahead in the 58th minute. This time it was Ferguson who was the creator, flighting a free-kick into the box that Webster headed over from eight yards. It was a glorious opportunity.

It then became the King versus Adrian Popa show. First the Romanian wide man shot over with just the goalkeeper to beat, before King denied the same player twice in quick succession, once when he showed strong hands to palm away a deflected shot, and then when he was quickly off his line as Popa threatened to lob home a second.

Smith had a chance to win it in the 90th minute but shot over. But that move was a warning of what was to come, and with Millwall pushing up to try to force another goal, they were caught twice on the break.

It will be Reading and not Millwall in the third round, but three points against the Canaries this weekend will make this defeat feel like a distant memory.

STEVE MORISON is encouraged

by Millwall’s start to the season – but admits they need to start converting goal opportunities.

The Lions have had an incredible 74 attempts on goal in four games – 23 on target – but have just two points on the board.

Morison is certain that if performance standards remain high then they will “comfortably” survive in the Championship.

“The biggest plus for us is our performance levels, they’ve gone right up,” Morison said.

“No one can watch the games and say we haven’t been dominant in all of them. But there’s been bad finishing, the ball hasn’t fallen for us, good saves and blocks. And then we’ve been punished at the other end.

“We need to get the balance right and I think against Bristol we had that.

They just made some fantastic lastditch blocks and the big man [Tom Elliott] was unlucky with a header off the post. We just need to not lose faith in what we’re doing, keep the performance levels high and the ball will start going into the back of the net.

“It was interesting to see how we were going to do. People start reading into pre-season friendlies but they’re there to get the rustiness out and to improve fitness levels. I think we’ve shown we’re very, very fit.

“We’ve shown we’re going to work hard and we’ve got quality as well.

We’ve been brilliant.

“You’re going to get people moaning and groaning because we haven’t won games, but that’s because they don’t know football. They don’t realise that if you look at our performance levels they’re way up on last year.

“The amount of chances we have created, you don’t do that by luck. It’s something we work hard on every day.

It’ll change and maybe in some game we’ll create one chance and get one goal and win.

“We’ll keep plugging away and working hard. If we continue to create that number of chances we’ll score goals and stay in this league comfortably.

“But we can’t get complacent.”

“There is no team so far that won’t say they’ve found it very, very tough against us.”

Millwall have the chance to get their first league win of the season when they face Norwich City on Saturday ahead of the international break.

And Morison feels the players who have joined the club in the summer

have raised the overall level.

“The gaffer has made some great signings,” he said. “Some of them hadn’t played at Championship level before and they’ve stepped up.

“The team has evolved, we’ve moved on to the next level.

Personally I’m still glad to be part of it. I’m still chipping in.

“It’s been good so far but we have to keep it going. This league is tough, it can be brutal.

“We will go again against Norwich on Saturday and then have a bit of a break for ten days.”

Nelson down the pecking order, and his first-team chances would have been limited this season.

Lewisham-born Nelson signed his first professional contract in 2014 and captained Millwall when he was just eighteen under Ian Holloway.

Nelson made his debut for Millwall in the Championship in December 2014, and has played 38 times for the club in all competitions.

He went out on loan to Newport County last season, and played fourteen games as the Welsh club miraculously escaped the drop out of the Football

League after being eleven points off second-last place in March.

Way thanked Lions boss Neil Harris for facilitating the move.

“Sid has already had a competitive run of games in the Championship,” Way said.

“He has good leadership skills and is someone who enjoys defending.

“I’m really pleased the deal has finally been agreed as we’ve been in discussions with Millwall for a number of weeks.

YEOVIL TOWN boss Darren Way said Sid Nelson’s “good leadership skills” and experience were the reasons he moved to sign the defender on loan until January.

Nelson, 21, joined League Two Yeovil on Monday after being left out of the Lions’ squad for their four league games this season.

Lions strikers Lee Gregory and Steve Morison have yet to open their season accounts in the Championship, but Morison will have the chance to change that against his former club Norwich City this weekend.

Gregory’s birthday falls on the same day as the clash with the Canaries, while Morison’s is three days later.

Harris signed Tom Elliott from AFC Wimbledon in the summer to increase competition for the regular front two, while Fred Onyedinma and Aiden O’Brien are also options up front.

Harris has been pleased with the performances of Gregory and Morison, and admitted this weekend would be an ideal time for his vice-captain to get his first league goal of the campaign.

“In any game any type of goal would be important for Moro,” Harris said.

“We’ve not had the results our performances have warranted, in my opinion, and the centre-forwards haven’t had the goals their performances have deserved.

“Steve and Lee have been outstanding, particularly shape-wise, without the ball. They know their jobs inside-out.

“In an attacking sense they have been really unfortunate not to be sitting on three or four goals each.

“Fred made a great impact when he came on last weekend, Tom is learning all the time and has scored some goals.

He’s been a real handful coming off the bench and he’s chomping at the bit.

“In terms of attacking players, Aiden is off the mark and has performed really well. My front six – I put Jed Wallace in there – are looking really good. But I always want more.

“Moro, Gregs, Fred, I want them off the mark and getting goals. But that will come. One thing that’s been certain over the last couple of years is that as a team we’ve scored a lot of goals.

“We want to get that first win on the board. Confidence is really high, the players are excited.

“Norwich at home Saturday is a really top game for us against one of the sides that were favourites for promotion.”

Harris thanks ‘popular’ Worrall after release

MILLWALL BOSS Neil Harris has said David Worrall will be missed in the dressing room after the parties agreed to a mutual termination of his contract this week.

The Lions confirmed before Tuesday

night’s 3-1 defeat to Reading in the EFL Cup that Worrall had left the club.

Worrall, 27, joined the Lions last summer on a free transfer from Southend but struggled to hold down a first-team place.

He made just eighteen starts in all competitions and scored two goals.

Worrall featured once this season, in the first-round EFL Cup win over

Stevenage.

Worrall was given time off during last season after his and his partner’s newborn child suffered some health complications.

Worrall is now free to talk to other clubs. Harris also let Sid Nelson leave for Yeovil on loan, and hasn’t ruled out adding to his squad before August 31.

He said: “Possibly. My squad was too

big before [Monday]. Sid has gone to Yeovil which is a great move for him to play some football.

“Dave’s Millwall career started brilliantly, then he had a setback, familywise, and he stuttered. Second half of the season he couldn’t get into the team.

“Dave is a brilliant fellow. He’s a great trainer and massively popular in the dressing room.

“He is a real spirited fellow, we’re going to miss him and we wish him all the best for his next move, whenever that comes about.

“And we thank him for his efforts.

“I’ve still got a healthy squad. I made ten changes [Tuesday night] and they were ten senior players.

“I was really pleased with their efforts.”

MILLWALL’S EFL Cup exit at Reading could have come with some extra cost after Tom Elliott hobbled off with an ankle injury.

Elliott, 26, was making just his second start since his move from AFC Wimbledon in the summer and after requiring treatment on a couple of occasions he was substituted in the 66th minute at the Madejski Stadium.

Elliott was injured defending a corner early on as Millwall lost to goals from George Evans and Sam Smith at the end of each half of extra-time.

The striker could now be a doubt for the league clash with Norwich at The Den on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Ryan Tunnicliffe made his full debut against the Royals, starting in midfield with Ben Thompson in the second-round clash.

Lions boss Neil Harris praised Tunnicliffe’s impact after the former Fulham player missed most of preseason.

“I was really pleased with him. He was a little but rusty to start with but grew into the game,” Harris said. “In the second half he was very, very good and showed what he is all about.

“We need to get a few more messages into him, when you come in late it’s not easy to learn over the course of the season, you’re not on the same level playing field as everyone else.

“It was a real plus the 78 minutes he got.”

Although the Lions have just two points on the board, they have dominated four games but been unable to convert the majority of the numerous chances they have created.

Millwall welcome another of the big guns, Norwich City, to The Den this weekend and Wallace feels the supporters “deserve” to watch their side play against high-profile clubs.

“It’s an exciting time to be a Millwall fan,” Wallace said. “The fans have been really good as well. When I turn up at The Den there is a really positive atmosphere. They’re expecting good things for us.

“It’s an exciting time to be part of Millwall. The support we got last season, the fans deserve these big teams coming to The Den. I know there will be highlights for them, they’ll be looking at Leeds and Sunderland and looking forward to them.

“But almost every game there are big football clubs. And I’ve said it before, this is where Millwall deserve to be. When I signed first time two years ago I said Millwall should be in the Championship. That’s where we are now and we’ve just got to start winning games.

“I don’t care who it is, no one will relish coming to The Den. Fans make the atmosphere hostile and we’ve got to be on top of teams the way Millwall can.”
