NOTHER INADEQUATE Ofsted rating for one of our biggest providers of further education in the borough – you have to hope that the incoming CEO of Lewisham and Southwark College is right when she talks about ‘green shoots’ of recovery.

The importance of primary and secondary education cannot be overstated, but further education also plays a vital part in young adults’ development and career prospects. For LeSoCo to receive not one, but two Grade 4 ratings is a real cause for concern, and unsurprisingly questions are being asked about the direction the college is taking.

Having previously sold off part of their Bermondsey campus to property developers, you could be forgiven for thinking that the college would now have the funds needed to invest in the sites they have retained, as well as in the teaching facilities and staff – yet the latest Ofsted report noted a ‘precarious financial position’ at the college, along with poor attendance records.

Yes there were also positives, including support for vulnerable learners and a ‘welcoming and safe community’, but two inadequate ratings are way below what young adults, and any adult seeking to continue their education, should rightly expect from their local college.

The Vicar of St John’s the Evangelist church in East Dulwich Road threw himself off cliffs in Dover last November.

In this case, Fr Richardson’s police bail was about to end, after he was arrested when police found 31 indecent images of children on his computer. According to a parent of a pupil at the adjoining primary school, the child pornography was ‘of the highest calibre. It was full-on, not nice stuff’.

Even though Fr Richardson left a note expressing remorse, for his cousin, who spoke to us this week, it was too little, too late. She argued that he should have faced up to what he had done and ‘faced the music’.

But what is really surprising is how, even after his arrest, Fr Richardson was allowed to visit his vicarage, whilst parishioners were not given any explanation for his suspension of normal church duties. Many even attended a memorial service held in his honour after his death.

It is very possible that parishioners may have decided, upon learning of his arrest and the reason for it, that he had served them well and still deserved recognition at his memorial service. But surely the church should have given them the information they needed, in order to be able to make that choice for themselves?

First Peckham Lido plans unveiled

PLANS TO revive the buried lido lying beneath Peckham Rye are going swimmingly, as a local architect has won the bid to draw up a design for the project.

Studio Octopi, based in Burrows Mews, SE1, has released provisional designs, which show the pool flanked by the trees at the northern end of Peckham Rye. Chris Romer-Lee, who will be leading on the project, said he would be drawing influence from their previous designs for a floating lido on

the Thames.

The original lido, located at the tip of the park bordering Peckham Rye and East Dulwich Road, dates back to 1923, although swimming is known to have taken place at a pond on the same site as far back as the 1800s.

The lido was closed, like so many others, in 1987, but local enthusiast Ben Lloyd-Ennals has been championing a campaign to revive the leisure facility since this time last year.

With thousands of signatures on an online petition and Harriet Harman, parliamentary candidate for Camberwell and Peckham on board, the campaign has gained much local

support The initial designs put forward include a 50m heated and chlorinated pool with the scope for a smaller natural pool alongside it, which could draw water from the river Peck running directly under the site.

The pool would be surrounded by single storey pavilions housing a gym, cafe and community space.

Studio Octopi now intend to work closely with the Peckham community to come up with a design with which everyone is happy. Once the design is finished, it can be used to seek funding from both private business and government grants.

A FIVE-year-old train fanatic has become an internet sensation after he proved he had memorised the entire transport map of London.

Sol De Glanville has always had a fascination with rail travel, pointing out where he was on the line at every stop on a journey.

Since he got a TfL map for Christmas, though, he studied it every day until he could tell his stunned parents how to get from any one point to another from memory.

‘Oh my gosh you really do know it!’, exclaimed mum, Joy Green, after her super-son asked her to test him on his new talent.

“He’s a very normal little boy,” said the 39-year-old mother of two from Peckham. “He loves trains - he doesn’t think it’s that unusual.”

After a video they posted online for Sol’s grandma to see his novel skill went viral on Facebook, TfL offered Sol the chance to sit in the driver’s cab on the Jubilee Line.

“He really enjoyed it,” said Joy, who added son, Sol, would quite like to be a tube driver when he grows up.

Hamlet ‘could become supporter owned’ club DULWICH

DULWICH HAMLET FC fans are ‘delighted’ the club could become fully supporter-owned if their dreams of a new stadium come true, after a pledge was made by the current owner this week.

A smaller stadium is needed for the struggling community club to survive, after debts of £180,000 nearly sent them under before they were bought out by the Hadley Group last year.

Hadley and the Dulwich Hamlet Supporters’ Trust want the new smaller ground to be built on the Astroturf site on Greendale Fields, behind the current stadium. Hadley would then use the stadium land for

possible housing developments.

Southwark Council, which owns Greendale Fields and lease the Astroturf site to Hadley, is now under pressure to renounce its alternative proposal to transform the land into a public park with the new stadium built on the site of the old grounds instead.

James Masini, Chair of the Dulwich Hamlet Supporters’ Trust, said he was ‘delighted’ Hadley had committed to ultimately transferring ownership, saying: “We urge the council to negotiate with Hadley Property Group as a matter of urgency.”

Cllr Barrie Hargrove, Southwark’s cabinet member for parks and leisure, said he was continuing to work with Hadley Homes and Dulwich Hamlet on securing the future of the football club.

THOUSANDS OF pounds have been raised for charity in the name of a young entrepreneur killed crossing the road outside East Dulwich station last month.

The devastated family has spoken of their loss after 22-year-old Matt Adams was struck by a Peugeot car travelling west on Grove Vale, throwing him into the path of an oncoming 176 bus.

As tributes have poured in for the computer game enthusiast, his family has set up an online fundraising page to continue his “kind and generous” legacy.

Born in Bishops Stortford, the marketing and events manager had only just moved into a house share in Jennings Road, East Dulwich, a month before the tragic incident.

The young businessman was doing some work for Southwark physiotherapy service Back2Normal while planning to turn his lifelong hobby of online gaming into a career.

His colleague at Butler’s W h a r f - b a s e d Back2Normal, Edward Natali, said: “Matt wasn’t just a colleague, he was part of our family. We’ll all miss his smile in the morning, with his cookies or muffins in hand. The passion he brought to his work cannot be replaced, but we do our best to honour him as we continue with his vision. It was our privilege to have known him.”

Having joined a group of London-

based gaming enthusiasts last year, Matt was working tirelessly to develop a new gaming centre in the capital.

Matt’s sister, Lucy Adams, 26, said his school friends-turned-colleagues would now be looking to open the centre in his honour, using Matt's personal computer screen as a centre piece.

Known by his online name, TeqR, Matt was so well-regarded in the gaming fraternity that a shrine to him

and kind nature will never be forgotten.”

Proud sisters Amy, 27 and Lucy added that their younger brother had grown into “one of the most charming and handsome young men we have ever had the pleasure of knowing. A truly beautiful soul, you have touched the lives of so many and will live on in all of our hearts.

We feel so lucky to have you as our brother.”

Matt’s grieving girlfriend, Julia William Becker, said she would “never stop loving his smile, his kindness, his charm. What a wonderful man."

Preparations have been made for his funeral to be held near his family home next week, while donations have been flooding in to the fundraising page set up in Matt’s name.

The money will be split between two charities – Special Effect, which supports disabled children to play online games and London’s Air Ambulance, who attended the scene of the fatal incident within minutes of receiving the call on March 29.

Paramedics fought to save him but he was pronounced dead at the scene just before 9pm and a post-mortem examination later gave the cause of death as multiple injuries.

No arrests have been made and both the driver of the car and the bus stopped at the scene.

Barmaid held up at gunpoint by man waiting in pub’s cellar

POLICE ARE appealing for information after a barmaid was held at gunpoint in an armed robbery last month.

The member of staff at the Pyrotechnists Arms in Nunhead Green had gone into the cellar to get some drinks after their St Patrick’s Day celebrations.

It was pitch black so she went to turn the light on and as she did, she saw a man holding a gun to her head.

At the same time, a colleague came downstairs with the takings from that night to put in the safe

and was confronted with the sight of an armed gunman holding his workmate hostage.

The suspect forced them to hand over the money and then ran off when a third member of staff came down to the cellar.

The suspect is described as a lightskinned mixed race male of slim build, in his 20s approximately 6ft tall, wearing dark coloured clothing. He is believed to have got in and out of the pub through the side gate entrance at around 1.30am on March 18.

A MAN drowning in the Thames was dramatically saved last week after the cries of desperate onlookers alerted a passing RNLI boat.

The Tower RNLI crew were passing under the Canon Street railway bridge at 6pm last Saturday when they saw people on the bank shouting and pointing.

They spotted a man struggling to keep his head above the water in the middle of the river and reached him just in time.

Helmsman Steve King said: “It

appeared that cold water shock had disabled his ability to swim and he was going under the water.

“We made our way to the man’s position and the crew managed to grab hold of him just before he went under the surface.

“The man was conscious and breathing as we got him on board. If we hadn’t got to him when we did we think he would have drowned. I’d like to thank all those people on the river bank who spotted the man in difficulty and helped us save his life.”

The crew removed his wet clothes and warmed him while making their way back to Tower lifeboat station by Waterloo Bridge.

WHY CAGE THE ELEPHANT?

THE BRONZE elephant and castle standing proudly outside the shopping centre of the same name has been caged in scaffolding this week for “vital maintenance” work.

The colourful statue was rescued from a public house on the site when the centre was first opened back in 1965.

As developers prepare to replace the centre with a ‘town centre’

and flats above in the next five years, there is still time for the pink elephant to receive a little TLC. A spokesperson for the Elephant & Castle Shopping Centre, said: “The Elephant & Castle statue is currently undergoing some vital maintenance and a safety hoarding has been erected as a result. This project is one of many we have embarked on over the last two years to ensure that the centre remains an attractive shopping destination for all."

‘Charming’ Levi cleaned up by conning folk on window round

A “CHARMING” conman from Rotherhithe has been jailed for two years after posing as a window cleaner in a crime spree covering Southwark, Lewisham, Hackney and Tower Hamlets.

Levi Bradbury, of Chilton Grove, “used his friendly personality to gain the trust of his victims” before scamming or stealing from them, according to a police spokesperson.

He would ask for payment in advance and leave, telling the victims that he would be back shortly with their correct change.

He would not return.

In some instances, he even walked the victims to nearby cash points so that they could withdraw money.

On three other occasions he

persuaded residents to give him their credit card and PIN, so he could go to the cash point and withdraw money for them. He used this tactic to steal a total of £550.

He snatched a mobile phone in one incident, which was discovered buried beneath a tree near his address using a ‘Find My Phone’ security app.

He was convicted of six counts of burglary, three counts of fraud and four counts of theft when he appeared at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Friday, 27 February.

A police spokesperson said: “Bradbury is a likeable, chatty, charming man who used his friendly personality to gain the trust of his victims.

“I would like to remind the public that they should not invite anyone into their home unless they have the correct identification on them and do not hand over your bank cards or PIN numbers to anyone.”

Benefit night to raise cash for nine-year-old leukaemia patient’s dream holiday

A BRAVE nine-year-old leukaemia patient whose only wish is to go to Disneyland hopes that a special fundraiser next Saturday will help him realise his dream.

The benefit evening will take place at the White Horse in Peckham Rye for Lewis Brooke, who was diagnosed with blood cancer just under a year ago.

He has been receiving intensive chemotherapy, tablets and morphine ever since, which badly affects his mobility and happiness.

His mum Debbie told the News that the prospect of going Florida was his way of coping with the horrible treatment.

She said: “It’s the only thing keeping him going, keeping him fighting. He is so excited. Every time someone donates even just five pounds he is so happy, because he knows that means he is that much closer to going.”

The fundraising target is £7,000, which would include the essential expensive travel insurance for

vulnerable children like Lewis.

Auctions, raffles and fundraising stunts will be held on the night, with items including signed shirts and footballs from Chelsea, Liverpool and Millwall football club up for grabs.

“He’s actually an Arsenal fan!” said mum Debbie. “But he knows that every pound we get will be so important, so he doesn’t mind.”

Tom, Lewis’s father, will be getting waxed as part of a tear-jerking stunt on the night. Generous punters will be able to donate £5 to rip a waxing strip off the brave father.

Debbie said: “Lewis can’t wait! He’s even been saving up his pocket money so that he can tear off the first strip himself.”

Lewis has only been well enough to go to school three times since this September, so is particularly looking forward to the exciting evening.

Debbie said: “He misses his friends.

Whenever he does go in he gets treated like a celebrity - they all go mad! He likes that but he mostly just wants to go back to when things were normal and he could just play football with his mates.

Dulwich in debt crisis, new figures show DULWICH

A LEADING charity has called for action to be taken to tackle high levels of debt in Dulwich, after it was revealed residents in the south of the borough are in the top ten percent of all calls made to a

national debt helpline.

In the last two years, 863 people called the National Debtline from Dulwich and West Norwood, 200 more than the London average and 300 more than the national average.

The high number of residents seeking financial advice is just the tip of the iceberg, according to the Money Advice

Trust who run the helpline, who says it is likely “thousands more” are “suffering in silence.”

“Whoever is elected as MP for Dulwich and West Norwood in May needs to put promoting free debt advice in the area near the top of their to-do list after the General Election,” warned Joanna Elson, OBE, chief executive of

the Money Advice Trust.

Camberwell and Peckham followed close behind neighbouring Dulwich with 831 calls made to the National Debtline in 2013 and 2014, placing both areas in the top ten percent of British constituencies calling out for financial help. Bermondsey and Old Southwark fared much better with 667 calls made

over the period, closer to the London average of 655.

Residents of Southwark’s neighbouring boroughs made fewer calls to the National Debtline but were still struggling to stay afloat with Lewisham West and Penge and Streatham both logging more than 800 calls to the service.

FRISKY YOUTHS are “completely spoiling” the quiet riverside environment of a Rotherhithe neighbourhood by using it as a romantic viewpoint.

Every evening, car-loads of lovedup youngsters park illegally in a pedestrian area just off Odessa Street, which offers stunning views of Canary Wharf across the river.

The peaceful atmosphere is shattered by the sound of music and “people getting up to God knows

what,” according to one resident who asked not to be named.

He said: “It’s a constant procession of cars going up the ramp. There are

The resident also told the News that police did sometimes visit the site, but usually only after the cars had left.

Previously a traffic bollard had kept cars out of the area, but this was removed without explanation several years ago, according to the resident.

Another resident said: “All the council need to do to solve the problem is put up a traffic bollard or a gate, like they do in other streets

nearby. It would be an easy solution and we would have peace and quiet again.”

Councillor Mark Williams, Southwark cabinet member for regeneration, planning and transport said: “We will investigate these concerns and take the appropriate action as we want all residents to be able to enjoy the riverfront.”

NEVER MIND singing ‘Stand up if you love Millwall’, one diehard fan chose to sit down instead last weekend, when he parked his rear on every single one of the 18,000 seats in The Den for a charity fundraiser.

Craig Wilson began his “sit-athon” on Friday, when he sat on the chairman’s seat in the director’s box. He completed his challenge just before Millwall

kicked off against Watford the following day, sitting in the most important seat in the house: manager Neil Harris’s spot in the dugout.

The stunt was in aid of Bromley Mencap, a charity that helps people of all ages with disabilities.

The 22-year-old, who is a beneficiary of the charity, said: “They help many disabled people and their families and carers in many different ways. I use their ‘job match’ service where they help me get into employment at some.

The man, thought to be in his late teens, entered the Food and Wine Store in Camberwell Green at around 7pm on October 13 last year.

The suspect had an argument in the shop about his broken mobile phone and how dissatisfied he was with the service he had received there.

He walked out but returned half an hour later, walked straight up to the counter and hit the 25-year-old shop assistant over the head with a glass vodka bottle.

The victim was taken to hospital with head injuries.

The suspect is described as black, aged in his late teens or early twenties, 5ft 4" tall with a gold or silver tooth.

He was wearing a purple and grey tracksuit top and light grey tracksuit trousers.

Detective Constable Tessa LyleMeller, from Southwark Police, said: "This is a dangerous individual who assaulted an innocent shop worker in an unprovoked attack. He needs to be located by the police. It is believed he lives locally, close to Camberwell Green."

New circus will be worth the weight

BOTH DISABLED and nondisabled circus performers will put on a spectacular show in Dulwich Park next month.

Extraordinary Bodies, the country’s first ‘integrated circus’, will dazzle through song, dance and stunt on May 9 and 10.

The show, entitled Weighting, “celebrates every body, disabled or not.”

The performers are also encouraging local residents to take part in the fun, with singers required for a 100-strong choir set to perform between acts. Email events@southwark.gov.uk if you wish to join in.

Runner finishes marathon hat-trick

A BERMONDSEY man hit the ground running last Sunday when he completed the Brighton Marathon in aid of children’s charity Action for Kids.

Jonathan Tanner said he was ‘very pleased’ with his time, a very respectable 4 hours and 17 minutes, considering he hurt himself not long before the race.

The 55-year-old said: “It was a great day and I’m very pleased with my time as I injured myself a few weeks before and knew I couldn’t go crazy.

There were people collapsing 100 metres from the finish and it was hard going, but I stuck to my plan and finished within my target.”

The SOAS University staff member has now completed a hat-trick of marathons after also taking part in the

Berlin and Edinburgh races.

He said: “I like the work Action For Kids does and it’s not just because my wife works there - although I do hear a lot of stories about the good work that is done with the young people.

Harriet has been working with disabled young people for a long, long time and it’s such a good cause I'm really glad I managed to exceed £600 of donations.”

SCULPTURE TO REPLACE STOLEN HEPWORTH WORK TO BE UNVEILED

THREE NEW art installations will finally take the place of Dulwich Park’s Barbara Hepworth statue, which was hauled out of the ground by thieves four years ago.

Crooks made off with the original £500,000 artwork in 2011 and are believed to have melted it down to sell as scrap metal, shocking the community and leaving art-lovers grieving its loss.

Council Leader Peter John at the time described the incident as ‘devastating’ and said that the theft of public art was becoming a “sickening epidemic” in Southwark, following the theft of a statue of Bermondsey doctor and MP Alfred Salter from the Thames riverside the previous month.

This Saturday its replacement will be unveiled in the form of three bold structures designed by celebrated artist Conrad Shawcross.

He said: “It has been a great pleasure to make a new, permanent commission for Dulwich Park.

These knot-like forms host a void within them and this is a subtle reference to Hepworth’s work, in

which the hole is ubiquitous.

“I hope they become meeting points, romantic destinations, and encourage playfulness while remaining beguiling and provoking.”

The artworks will form a trail in the northern end of the park. The cast-iron structures will rest on the grass – an attempt to show the juxtaposition between industry and the environment in Southwark.

The Picturehouse venue in Lordship Lane, formerly the St Thomas More Community Centre, was originally supposed to open at the end of last year, but after some unforeseen construction delays it is now ready to open its doors to the public next week.

To give the VIP launch party tonight a touch of red carpet glamour, comedian and film director Richard Ayoade of the

Channel 4 comedy the IT Crowd and his wife the actress Lydia Fox will be attending. Guests will then be entertained by a track list specially put together by Beastie Boy Adam Horovitz.

Then on Sunday night Hollywood heavyweight and super-baddy Alan Rickman will be sticking around after a showing of his latest film, A Little Chaos, for a question and answer session with the audience.

The first cinema in East Dulwich since 1972 will open to the public on Thursday April 23 with a showing of the next Avengers blockbuster.

Architect with fear of heights plans charity skydive from 10,000ft

A TRAINEE architect who cannot even bring himself to go to the top of tall buildings is doing a sky-dive from 10,000ft for charity.

Chris Williams was born with a cleft palate and had to have a total of nineteen operations throughout his childhood from when he was just three months old.

After becoming a committee member for CLAPA, the Cleft Lip and Palate Association last year, the 27-year-old pledged to raise money for the charity every year.

Last year he did a 28km run and this year he is hoping to raise at least £1,000 throwing himself out of an aeroplane.

“I’m pretty nervous to be honest,” said Chris, who lives in John Ruskin Street in Camberwell. “I have a fear of heights so it’s quite a challenge, not only to raise the money, but a challenge for me to face my fear,” added Chris, who admits he only managed to make it half way up the Eiffel Tower when he visited the French landmark recently.

New Routemasters for number 12 bus

SOUTHWARK: The number 12 bus, which runs between Dulwich Library to Oxford Circus, is to be entirely served by new Routemaster buses, Transport for London has said.

The 24-hours a day route, which includes Peckham Rye and Elephant and Castle, will be running entirely with the buses from the end of April.

The Routemasters, which have three sets of doors and two staircases, were introduced to help cut emissions.

Inquest told Vicar took his own life after child porn arrest

‘He should have faced the music’ says vicar’s cousin

THE COUSIN of an East Dulwich vicar arrested for possessing child porn believes he “should have faced the music”, after an inquest confirmed his death as suicide this month.

Father Charles Richardson, of St John’s the Evangelist church in East Dulwich Road, threw himself off cliffs in Dover last November shortly before his police bail ended, a coroner’s inquest concluded earlier this month.

His cousin Nikki Cox said: “He’s just got away with it. We’re not happy but there is nothing we can do.”

Richardson was arrested when police found 31 indecent images of children on his vicarage computer last May. The inquest at Folkestone Magistrates’ Court heard on April 8 that Richardson had sent a message to the police “expressing remorse” for his actions shortly before killing himself – the second time he had attempted to end his life.

He had also left a letter for his partner and sent a text to a friend that read: “Sorry, car in Dover by the lighthouse. Take care.

I can't carry on anymore.”

Nikki said: “We’re angry. It was too late for him to show remorse. He should have faced up to what he had done and faced the music. I didn’t even know he had a partner, let alone that he had left a note.

There was a lot we didn’t know about him. This isn’t something we can just move on from easily.”

She also expressed continuing anger towards the church for the way they handled her cousin’s arrest and death, and

Richardson was allowed to visit his vicarage after his arrest, despite the fact that it overlooks a playground and is just metres from St John’s and St Clement’s Primary School. Parishioners were also not given any explanation for his suspension of normal church duties, with many attending even a memorial service held in his honour after his death.

A parent of a pupil at the school, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “There was recently an open meeting held with the police, in which we were told that the child pornography found was of the highest calibre. It was full-on, not nice stuff. He was clearly a flawed character, but he could have sought help.

There’s some closure now because the man is dead but there is still a lot of anger towards him, the church and their coverup – and even a little towards the police.”

Allegations about the vicar were passed to a British child abuse unit in 2012 following an operation by Canadian investigators. However, the warning was left in an in-tray until 2013 when it was belatedly passed on to the Metropolitan police. It was not until May last year that they raided his home.

When previously contacted by the News for a comment, a Southwark Diocese spokesperson referred to a letter written to parishioners by the Right Revd Michael Ipgrave. This letter apologised for the way the church’s congregation were kept in the dark following Richardson’s arrest and death, and for how the church failed to expand upon vague “safe-guarding” issues before his memorial.

Twenty years after joining the Labour party, the award-winning comedian backed Cllr Coyle’s fight for the Bermondsey and Old Southwark parliamentary seat.

He said: “There’s a reason that I’m a supporter of the Labour party and that’s because I believe in fairness. I want to support working families and help young people to achieve

The Deputy Prime Minister said: “There isn't any better illustration of the hypocrisy of Labour locally and nationally when they talk about the importance of affordable housing.

They are the ones who destroyed more than a thousand council owned properties at the Heygate and replaced them with less than 100.

That is all you need to know about Labour's local record on affordable housing.”

Mr. Hughes added: “This Labourrun council regularly breaks its own policy - which is 35 per cent minimum affordable. Almost no developments around here are 35 per cent affordable, some are 25 per cent like the Heygate, some are 20 or 15, or 10 or 5. Nick is here to say that the Liberal Democrats understand that what is needed is a massive programme to build affordable homes.”

Ofsted gives college ‘inadequate’ rating

LESOCO - LEWISHAM and Southwark College - has been given an Ofsted Grade 4 rating of ‘inadequate’, its second in a row.

The March 30 report said: “Governors, senior leaders and college staff have not made enough progress in improving key weaknesses identified at the previous inspection, including the poor provision in both English and mathematics.

“Teaching, learning and assessment are improving too slowly, and too few learners experience good teaching.”

Oftsed previously gave the college an ‘inadequate’ rating in January, 2014. The latest report highlighted ‘poor’ attendance records and a ‘precarious financial position’ at the college.

Some positives were highlighted, including the college’s support for vulnerable learners, its ‘welcoming and

safe community’, and good provision in drama, dance and hospitality and catering. A protest organised by Southwark Trades Council, who are dissatisfied with the way the college is being run, will take place on April 25 at 12.30pm outside the Waterloo campus in The Cut. Carole Kitching, who will be joining the college as principal and CEO this summer, described the inspection results as a ‘disappointment’.

She said: “Clearly the outcome of the Ofsted reinspection is a disappointment to everyone but the Report makes many references to recent improvements and ‘green shoots’.

Brave health worker tells of ‘shocking’ scenes at hospital

A BRAVE Ebola-fighting doctor is now preparing to run the London Marathon in her isolation suit, to raise money for the award-winning partnership of Southwark hospitals who put her on the front line.

Junior Doctor Claire Ferraro returned from Freetown in Sierra Leone last week, where she had been working for the King’s Sierra Leone Partnership (KSLP) for four months.

The project, coordinated by the three Southwark NHS trusts - Guy’s

and St Thomas’, King’s College Hospital and South London and Maudsley, and King’s College London, deployed medical staff after the highly contagious virus claimed thousands of lives across three West African countries.

Arriving at the height of the epidemic, 28-year-old Claire had to deal with many people dying on her shift. “The very first day was all a bit shocking,” she said. “People died really quickly. You walk into the unit one day and overnight or the next day they might have died. I had to deal with a number of dead bodies every day and telling the family. That

was pretty hard,” she added.

After two British nurses hit the headlines for contracting Ebola last year, Claire confessed she was “very nervous” about going to work in Freetown’s Connaught Hospital, but said she had the full support of her family.

“You definitely think about it. I was

nervous, but it’s good to have a bit of nervousness because it makes you concentrate on what you’re doing.

When you relax is when mistakes are made,” she said.

The young doctor had prepared herself to see a lot of blood, but what really struck her was the confusion in afflicted patients and the ‘Ebola

stare’. “They had an empty look like they know they’re really sick. Out of six beds you could come in and see two or three people on the floor, confused and muttering to themselves and another might have died. It was a really shocking first few weeks,” she said.

Thanks to doctors like Claire working with the KSLP alongside local medical staff, the rate of confirmed cases has reduced to four a month coming through the hospital doors at the last count. She says the national Guardian University Award for best international project the KSLP won last week is “welldeserved” and is now in training to run the London marathon to raise funds to keep the work going.

A RAILWAY bridge has been temporarily repaired after it was struck by a lorry last week, leaving a train full of passengers stranded on the crossing for hours.

The driver of the crane lorry, which crashed into the bridge in Village Way, Dulwich on Wednesday morning last week, was said to be 'shaken' after the jib nearly took out the oncoming train.

The Southern service to London Bridge carrying 89 passengers was stopped at 11am after the truck with an extendable crane on the back was seen ploughing into the top of the bridge.

Network Rail told the News that the jib of the lorry fell across the tracks in the collision taking out the parapet of the bridge. A temporary repair has taken place but there was no structural damage to the bridge.

It is unclear yet how much the permanent repair of the parapet will cost, but Southwark Council has already replaced the warning sign on the bridge.

The fire brigade was called to the scene at 11.25 and two fire engines responded to try to make the bridge safe. A spokesperson confirmed no one was trapped or injured and the passengers were eventually transferred

to another train which was pulled alongside them.

Roy Fielding, 60, who lives on Village Way, called the emergency services after witnessing the incident.

“I saw it crash into the side of the bridge and there’s a train stuck on the bridge, it’s knocked a hole in the top of it,” he said.

The driver of the Jewson lorry was said to be "shaken" according to a spokesperson for the building supplier, who told the News: “We are aware of the incident this afternoon in Dulwich and we’re very relieved that no one has been injured or harmed as a result of the incident. As you can imagine, our driver is understandably shaken up at this stage," said the spokesperson. "We are of course cooperating fully with the relevant authorities and will be conducting our own full investigation to find out all the details and circumstance around the incident.”

Southern services using that route were cancelled while work to stabilize the bridge was undertaken, but resumed the same day.

Nearly ten incidents a week in borough, says London Fire Brigade

SOUTHWARK HAS seen more serious fires over the past twelve months than any other London borough, with nearly ten incidents a week – ‘considerably worse’ than the average for the capital.

Serious fires are those that involved a death, a casualty, a rescue or the presence of four or more fire engines. Faraday, in Walworth, suffered worse than any other Southwark ward, with 46 serious incidents recorded from April 2014 to last month.

In terms of total incidents, including minor fires, false alarms and non-fire related emergencies such as car crashes, Southwark again fared poorly.

4388 incidents were recorded, whereas many other boroughs recorded fewer than 2000. Only Camden and Westminster fared worse.

Southwark also struggled when it came to more bizarre types of fire rescue. The fire service was called 308 times to help free people trapped in lifts, the fourth-highest record in London.

But the borough’s fire department performed admirably in terms of response times. An engine arriving at the scene would on average match the response time of any other borough, while a second unit, if required, was quicker than average.

Simon Tuhill, London Fire Brigade Borough Commander of Southwark, said: “Over half of all fires in the home start in the kitchen,

which is why it is so important to be careful when cooking. You should never leave your cooking unattended, and you should definitely not leave home at any point when you’ve got something in the oven or on a stove.

“Always make sure you’ve turned everything off as soon as you finish cooking, and never store books or paper near your hob, as they are very flammable. Kitchen fires can be easily prevented with a bit of common sense.”

As reported by the News earlier this month, one pesky pooch sparked a large blaze when he accidentally switched on the kitchen hob while looking for some biscuits.

Two people, along with two turtles, a snake, a hamster and Leo the Staffordshire-boxer himself, were forced to flee.

A PECKHAM coffee shop received an unusual guest last Saturday when the Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand popped in for a cuppa.

Dr Yongyuth Yuthawong visited Old Spike Roasters as part of a cultural event organised by the School of Social Entrepreneurs.

The new coffee company is a social enterprise that provides jobs and housing for homeless people, as well as mental health support, rehabilitation and occupational therapy.

This business plan attracted the attention of the Thai government, who are attracted to setting up

similar ventures in the south-east Asian state.

Cemal Ezel, co-founder of Old Spike Roasters, said: “We're really pleased to get the recognition of the Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand and are glad we can be a source of inspiration for their plans in their own country.

“What we’re doing is immediately lifting people out of homelessness. For six months we provide people with a job here, and during that time we offer support and training to help our beneficiaries secure longer-term work.

“We also provide housing, which means our beneficiaries are not homeless anymore all while roasting specialty coffee.”

LOVERS’ LANE GETS RESIDENTS HOT UNDER THE COLLAR

Parties don’t jump on the SE16 broadband bandwagon

THE ASSERTION by Sarah Gibb (Southwark News, Letters April 9th) that Simon Hughes is jumping on a bandwagon to bring broadband to Rotherhithe which is being led by Southwark Labour and local councillors is someway from the truth.

The issue of slow broadband speeds in Rotherhithe and Surrey Quays wards was raised in Parliament by Simon Hughes in mid 2013. It is also true to say that Val Shawcross, the GLA member, was also raising concerns at the same time.

A local organisation, Rotherhithe Broadband Group was formed in December 2013, some time before the council elections, following a meeting of the Canada Water Consultative Forum with Val Shawcross.

It was the Rotherhithe Broadband Group which submitted evidence to the Greater London Authority, questioned the Mayor of London on radio and raised the issue of poor broadband with its publications, including a proposal for a community owned and managed fibre network.

What has the local authority done?

Held meetings with both BT and Virgin and commissioned consultants, in June 2014, to report on local position and options, but as yet their report has not been published.

It met with the local group, who outlined their proposal for a locally based fibre network but still the “council considers options”.

Yet the Government’s strategy “The Digital Communication Infrastructure Strategy” published with the Budget clearly outlines a role for local authorities,viz: ”Local Authorities play an important role in facilitating the delivery of digital infrastructure” and” The Government is calling on all local authorities to support the expansion of telecommunications and broadband when preparing local plans”.

Both BT and Virgin say that the provision of fibre broadband in the area is difficult to justify a business case, so the area, apart from some pockets served by other companies who specialise in providing developments of flats, languishes with a poor infrastructure, with one area being named as one of the slowest areas in the UK. It is no wonder that Canada Water Station is in the top ten of London

So what can be done?

The community has proposed a local owned and managed fibre network which would: -would provide a fibre network to the home or business -would future proof the service in the area with a 1 gb download speed -would create local jobs in a growing sector -would as a social enterprise plough future profits back into the community -would be cheaper to deliver than other proposals -would deliver its service cheaper and faster than other proposals.

Support for the community proposals from the Council could deliver a real step-forward for the local community.

The Rotherhithe Broadband Group remains non-party political as it recognises to improve broadband speeds in Rotherhithe requires the support of local, regional and central Government and rather than seek to gain advantage politicians should all work together to improve local provision of a key infrastructure service to benefit local people.

be said about this claim: 1. Target rents are similar to council rents in the same way that going by British Rail is similar to getting on a Virgin Train. A similar product, but more expensive.

Housing Association target rents, when service charges are taken into account, can be half as much again or nearly double existing council rents.

If NHHT wants to dispute that they should tell us, in pounds, what they will charge new tenants.

They have not given these figures in the revised planning application for the Aylesbury, or anywhere elsewhy not?

2. Council tenants are fully aware that target rents are higher than existing council rents which is why we voted overwhelmingly to reject the Council’s plan to charge target rents to new council tenants. The Council ignored our wishes of course, but that’s another story.

3. The higher rents are not the only reason to oppose the demolition of the Aylesbury Estate.

There are many others, including that there will be a net loss of socially rented housing, most of the homes for sale, even the “affordable” ones are likely to be too expensive for existing residents to buy and the new rental tenancies will be “assured” not “secure” which means NHHT will find it easier to evict people.

As for the promise that the “target rents” will not be hiked up to “affordable rents” until 250 years have elapsed, I find that claim even less credible than the Council’s claim to be building 11,000 council homes in the next 30 years.

It seems the longer the timeframe, the more fantastical the promises.

In both cases you only need to look at what they are doing now for a guide to what they might do in the future.

Don’t trust either of them. Fight for council housing now.

THE GENERAL election on 7th May is a key opportunity for disabled people to make their voices heard at the ballot box.

The next government will be making decisions about everything from whether we get more disabledfriendly homes built to essential support with cooking, washing and getting out and about.

To use your vote you need to make sure you are on the electoral register – you can check this by contacting your local council. There are lots of ways to vote – you can vote at your local polling station, by post, or you can nominate someone to cast your vote for you. The deadline to register to vote is 20th April.

Your local council should make sure that disabled people are able to use their vote in person on polling day.

There are many ways that they can do this, for example by making sure polling stations are accessible to wheelchair users, providing forms in large-print or taking time to explain the process so that someone can cast their vote.

Charity puts irons in the fire to forge ahead with memorial statue

S

upporters of a memorial statue to a VC medal winner from Southwark are going to put their irons in the fire this weekend to help create the life-size effigy of Naval war hero, Albert Edward McKenzie, writes Amelia Burr...

Chairman of the Albert McKenzie Memorial Fund, Paul Keefe, has invited everyone who has been involved in fundraising for the statue to go down to Kevin Boyes’ blacksmith’s forge at Surrey Docks Farm and create a piece of the statue themselves, which will stand proudly in Tooley Street when it is completed.

Fundraising is still ongoing, as costs have spiralled since the design was completed a few years ago from £40,000 to £125,000. But Paul is hoping the day down at the forge with Lady West, wife of Admiral Lord West, will reinvigorate the troops, who have raised more than £100,000 since 2010.

When the statue goes up it will stand at the epicentre of Albert McKenzie’s life in Southwark – between where he was born in Alice Street, where his parents lived in Shorncliffe Road, where he went to school in Webb Street and where he socialised in Decima Street.

In 1913 young Albert joined the Royal Navy as a boy entrant at eleven years of age. He joined the training ship Arethusa, which typically took boys from poorer parts of London.

Discipline was notoriously harsh on board but the boys were taught everything they needed to know for a career in the Navy. McKenzie became a young boxing star on board, which

stood him in good stead for the handto-hand combat he would later have to engage in on the front line.

The month before the start of World War One, Albert enrolled in the Boys Service of the Royal Navy at the age of fifteen. Four years later, his act of astounding courage would help keep a British military disaster from total defeat.

In 1918 McKenzie put himself forward for the Naval force being formed to attack the Belgium port of Zeebrugge in a daring plot to take the major North Sea submarine base from the Germans. The plan was to block the heavily defended canal by filling three British ships with concrete and sinking them across the entrance.

At the same time a raiding party of Naval officers and Royal Marines was to land on the harbour wall, known as ‘TheMole’, and destroy the heavy guns guarding the harbour To prevent the Germans reinforcing their troops during the attack, the viaduct which connected the Mole to the mainland was also to be destroyed by a submarine filled with explosives to be blown up underneath.

At his funeral service, a message from their majesties, the King and Queen, was read out. It said: ‘In the special circumstances of A.B. Albert E McKenzie’s lamentable death and the fact of his being a V.C , and the first London sailor to receive that most honourable reward, you are authorised to express at the public funeral the sympathy of their Majesties with the widowed mother and family. Their Majesties were grieved to hear of his untimely death and to think that he had been soared so short a time to wear the proud decoration which he so nobly won.’

I waft away the cloud of fog and take a sip of the delicious liquor through a straw made of bamboo.

It’s almost as though I’ve been transported right to the shores of Okinawa, the Japanese island that this cocktail is named after.

The scene has attracted some envious stares from the diners on nearby tables.

“I’ll have one of those,” one woman says to her waiter, pointing at my drink.

Welcome to Yama Momo, a Japanese restaurant and cocktail bar that opened on Lordship Lane in January.

It’s the latest offering from the owners of the Tsunami restaurants in Clapham and the West End. Although this branch has a similar menu and tapas-style ethos to Tsunami, the owners hit on a name with less negative connotations - Yama Momo means ‘mountain peach’ in Japanese.

When I arrive at 6pm on a Friday evening, the restaurant is already

bustling, with everyone from pensioners with their grandchild, to young couples and groups of friends already mid-meal.

The decor is distinctly Asian - it’s dimly lit, with black brick walls, bunches of fresh flowers dotted about the room and candlelit tables, each with a single, bright pink bloom.

I’m led to a table opposite the open kitchen, where slabs of fresh pink salmon and reddish tuna are laid out, ready to be sliced into sushi.

A handful of chefs - some Asian, some Western - don black caps and shirts and toil away at a long counter that’s lit up by the orange glow from bulbs with visible filaments.

The interior design is not the only attention to detail - water is flavoured with fresh cucumber, the presentation of food is impeccable and the cocktails feature fun, theatrical touches, from dry ice to edible gold spray paint.

The best way to eat here is to share and I chomp my way through a

selection of salads, mains and sashimi with a schoolfriend.

This friend is not normally big on raw fish, but tells me she’s “willing to give it a go”. I see it as a true test of the restaurant’s food. Win her over, and they definitely have something good going.

We start with a mound of glistening green samphire and wakame (seaweed), drizzled with a delicate soy dressing and just a hint of heat.

The waitress tells us that Japanese women eat the seaweed after giving birth, and that it is good for your skin, and we wolf it down in huge mouthfuls.

The prawns come on adorable cucumber stands, encased in threads of gold kataifi that is crumbly, light and doesn’t taste at all greasy.

So un-greasy, in fact, that I dollop lots of the accompanying chilli mayo on them.

The dumplings are slime free, and filled with fresh shredded chicken, not cheap mince, and seasoned with colourful red and green herbs.

We move onto a sashimi salad and it’s so good that even my previously sushi-

shy friend can’t keep her chopsticks out.

Served on a beautiful, oblong dark tile, the salmon and tuna slices are smooth and fresh, slightly lighter on the outside, having been heated just around the edges.

The fish is served on a bed of salad leaves, and is fragrant and light with a hint of coriander.

Then comes the sushi - another visual delight, six discs of rice and soft shelled crab laid out on a black and white slab.

The sushi rolls are surprisingly crunchy and warm inside, thanks to the lightly battered soft shell crab that works well with the avocado and chives filling.

It’s not like any sushi I’ve ever tasted, and we polish off the plate.

But the best is yet to come - black cod, the most expensive dish on the menu, is well worth its £28 price tag.

Glazed in a warm, sweet miso sauce, it arrives looking like a bar of gold in the middle of the plate.

The fish is perfectly cooked, falling away in meaty flakes, and goes well with a small pot of extra sweet miso with a black squiggle of eel sauce in it.

The cod is nutty, sticky, and deliciously moreish.

Dessert was always going to have a hard time living up to such incredible mains.

The tart is made with yuzu, a Japanese citrus fruit, and has a caramelized topping and crumbly biscuit base.

But there isn’t enough kick from the yuzu and the ice cream tastes more of milk than the green tea it’s supposed to be flavoured with.

That said it was beautifully presented, sitting pretty on a bamboo leaf, and garnished with fresh strawberries.

The restaurant hasn’t yet made a dessert menu, and I’d advise swapping the sweet for an extra cocktail until it does.

Before leaving, we head to the bar for a nightcap, where a group of women are dressed up and sipping from Champagne flutes.

Yama Momo is so slick it could be in the heart of the city, but it has a more relaxed atmosphere thanks to its suburban post code and clientele of locals and families.

I roll out filled with fresh fish and good cocktails. And as for my friend? She’s a sushi convert.

THERE IS little doubt that for the vast majority of ordinary working people in Southwark the dream of owning your home in the borough or London for that matter is just that - a dream, writes Kevin Quinn..

But there are many who have got their foot in the door through a shared ownership scheme. It has been with us for a long time and is not just a sticking plaster over the continuing housing crisis; many experts feel that it should be as much in the mix as right-to-buy, as housing takes centre stage this week in the current election battleground.

You join a shared ownership scheme through a housing association and can buy between 25 per cent and 75 per centre of the property value and then pay rent on the rest.

In Southwark many of the new developments have signed up to the scheme with a housing association, or in some case the developments are being built and sold by the housing associations.

You obviously have to be working and earning a wage to qualify but

not too much. Nationally the household income is generally £60,000 for the scheme, but in London it can more. Of course it’s also worth checking the minimum needed per household with each housing association. And also check with them about how steep the rent increases could be before you buy. However, usually a housing association will raise it in line with inflation.

For most buying through shared ownership the idea is to stop renting altogether and become the owner.

This process is called staircasing, but especially in Southwark it is worth bearing in mind that if property prices change, the price for more shares will change too. If the prices go up as they currently are the shares might be more expensive – but so too are the shares you have bought.

According to Paul Smee, director-

general, Council Of Mortgage Lenders, there should be more shared ownership schemes to meet the huge demand for them.

Shared Ownership accounts for only 0.8 per cent of all UK households, so he says “it is unlikely to be an immediate gamechanger; but there is potential for growth. Sales increased gradually from 6,248 in 2009/10 to 8,636 in 2014, but the Homes and Communities Agency reported 53,513 applications in 2013/14. So demand is there even if supply is not.”

However, he argues changes can be made to make it more viable. ”The Prudential Regulation Authority needs to review its rules on capital weighting, to ensure there is less disparity between the treatment of shared ownership mortgages and traditional mortgage finance,” he said.

“A more joined-up approach to publicise and incentivise shared ownership could further motivate investment. Making it easier to sell properties in part-ownership or move accumulated equity share from property to property would also promote the tenure,” he added.

Section 80, Housing Act 2004 Notice is hereby given that the London Borough of Croydon in exercise of its powers under section 80 of the Housing Act 2004 (“the Act”) has on the 16th day of March 2015 designated for selective licensing the area of the London Borough of Croydon as delineated and edged red on the Map at Annex A. The teenager officially announced he turned pro in the last seven days and he has signed terms with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing team, therefore turning down an offer from rival promoter Frank Warren.

He said: “It has been on my mind for a while and I nearly turned pro last year. But I was persuaded to go for the ABAs one more time.

“When it didn’t go my way I thought it was the right time. I had good offers and I don’t want boxing to be a hobby, I want it to be my career so turning pro seemed the right thing to do.”

He added: “It’s a top gym full of top fighters so it is exciting for me to work there and watch and learn from people who are fighting for titles, and seeing what it takes to get there.

“At the moment I have only been there a week or so and I am working on technical things and getting my style right and we will see what happens.”

The ex-Fisher ABC man said he would look back on his time in the Bermondsey gym fondly but admitted he found the lack of international recognition frustrating.

He told the News: “I have to thank people like Steve Hiser, Ray Bull and Timmy Driscoll and everybody who helped train me as an amateur, and also all my sponsors who helped me too.”

He added: “It just felt my face did not fit with the GB squad. Of the eight fighters who I went to the World Junior Games with six are in GB squads and I can’t even get a trail.

“It’s great if you are in the GB squad but if not you get called up sometimes, at your own expense, and it feels like you are being used for sparring. You can get treated like a piece of meat.”

LIGHTWEIGHT DANNY Carr won his fifth bout of this year’s ABAs in order to secure a spot in the last eight of the nationwide competition.

The Fisher ABC boxer was expected to be given a bye after an arduous London section of the tournament, but instead he fought Lewis Adams from the Holland Park club last weekend in a pre-quarter final bout.

But despite the workload Carr came through the contest on points and is now ready to face the best

lightweights in the country in Liverpool next week.

Steve Hiser, head coach at Fisher boxing club, said: “He boxed the other kids head off and I think it took some people by surprise. Danny has real power and can really punch.

“But he showed he can box too and has great skill and he done very well.

The only surprise for me was it was a split decision as I thought he won easily.

“It didn’t affect the result but the judging is worrying. I saw another kid

However his old coach has mixed feelings about the switch to the paid ranks Fisher ABC head coach Steve Hiser said: “Personally I think he is too young to turn pro although I can understand why he has decided to do so.

“He turns pro with the blessing of me and everybody at Fisher. But I am disappointed as I think the way he has been treated means that he was pushed in this direction and it is happening all the time in the amateur game.”

But the boxer himself harbours no doubts about going pro. He added: “I am only nineteen and some may think I have gone too early but we are in no rush and Eddie Hearn has told me that.

“He [Hearn] wants me to build a following and it is not just about selling tickets. He told me lots of boxers can sell tickets but he wants to develop me and win titles that is good news for me.”

A YOUTHFUL side from Southwark City Tennis Club rallied to a fine win last week against Camber in the Aegon Surrey men’s league

The Burgees Park club relied on three teenagers from their youth programme, in a six man team, as they overcame their rivals by a score of eight points to four. However Southwark City Tennis players have been Camber were able to exact some revenge with their second team taking in top form in recent weeks

victory against Southwark's reserves.

In the women’s league a side featuring four teenagers also prevailed after coming through a tight encounter to beat David Lloyd Woking 4-3. The crunch doubles match tiebreak went the way of captain Rushan Tonge-Bobia and Angela Zamara.

The Easter break was a busy period at Southwark City Tennis Club with more than 80 children attending holiday camps.

The club ran six competitions with a total of 65 participants from under

eight to seventeen. The winners were Alexander Vurganov (age 8 and under), Lucas Ebert (8U), Shiv Kashyap (9U), Joshua Usideme (10U), Devante Brown (18U) and Charles Akom (18U).

Elsewhere Shiv Kashyap’s fine run of form continued as he picked up tournament wins at Muswell Hill and Bromley in the under nine category.

Lynn trio seek ABA glory

THREE BOXERS from Lynn ABC will head to Liverpool tomorrow week seeking to become national champions in their weight categories.

Of the three only Charlie Driscoll was in action in the pre-quarter finals of the competition last weekend, after the ABA decided London boxers would have to take part despite some having fought on numerous occasions already.

The Lynn man defeated Kane Stewart from the Paddy Johns club on a split decision.

Driscoll, who operates at light welterweight, has now boxed five times to get to the finals in Merseyside, a heavier workload than many of the peers he could be up against.

Lynn head coach Samm Mullins told the News: “We got told about the change at quite short notice but Charlie did well and won.

“It was a close fight but I do think the judging left a bit to be desired but we came away with the decision so we live to fight another day.”

Mullins is now looking for Driscoll to deliver against the big guns of his division given his experience in the amateur ranks.

Mullins said: “Charlie is a good fighter and has seven national titles under his belt so he knows what this is all about.

“But at this stage it is all about delivering on the day. There can be no mistakes as you have the best eight fighters in the country to compete with.

“I expect Charlie to make it to the final and maybe win but the pressure is on him as he is experienced and there is expectations about what he can achieve.”

In contrast to Driscoll both flyweight Louie Lynn and female bantamweight Jenna O’Riley have not had a contest but now have the opportunity to make waves at the Echo Arena in the quarter finals.

“Both Louie and Jenna go into the competition with nothing to lose. I don’t have any big expectations of them but that is not to say they will not go in there and give it everything.”

Mullins said.

“We happy as a club to have three fighters competing in Liverpool and hopefully we can come away from the weekend with a couple of champions.”

A CONTROVERSIAL 89 minute goal from Jordan Hibbert rescued a valuable point for Dulwich on Saturday in a game where all the spoils seemed to be theirs at one stage.

In a contest where Hendon went into the game hunting top spot Hamlet, seeking to tie up a play off position, appeared to hold all the aces when James Fisher saw red on 38 minutes after a heavy tackle on Luke Wanadio.

That advantage was capitalised on just after the second half commenced when Xavier Vidal turned on the edge of the penalty area and rifled a shot into the bottom corner of the net.

Harrison hits target and seeks to build

FISHER FC boss Dean Harrison believes he can bring long term success at the Rotherhithe club after achieving the short term goal of avoiding relegation.

Safety from the drop was secured over the Easter weekend and the Fisher manager, who has been in post since December, told the News he hopes recent good results are a sign of things to come.

He said: “There is a sense of relief at what we have done [avoiding relegation] and also one of achievement. We have all worked hard to get to this point.

“It is something I think is sustainable and we will continue to build on this. We want to be a top half side next year and be competing with those sides up there.”

ASDA FOUNDATION PAN LONDON SPORTS CHALLENGE SUCCESS AT MILLWALL

Millwall Community Trust (MCT) worked in partnership with sport for development charity Active Communities Network and the Asda Foundation last Wednesday (8 April) to deliver the ‘Pan London Challenge’

Taking place in the school Easter holidays the event was held at the Lions Centrewith over 200 young people from Lewisham, Lambeth, Southwark, Tower Hamlets, Brent, Enfield, Sutton and further afield coming together to celebrate the success of the Asda Foundation and Active Communities Network programme partnership, which is entering its second year.

The event focussed on the four London boroughs which hosted Asda Foundation Community Champions Tournaments over the past year for one final tournament.

The U18 and U16 boys groups each took part in a football competition run by Millwall Community Trust

coaches with the teams consisting of young people from the ASDA Foundation and Active Communities Network programme partnership projects across London.

The girls and U16 boys group also took part in a fitness challenge run by community delivery partners ‘Train Station’ which consisted of six fitness station challenges with young people competing as teams.

After the Train Station challenge the girls took part in a workshop delivered by Active Communities Network trainers focusing on female participation in sport and empowerment.

Guests including prospective Parliamentary Candidate - Simon Hughes, Councillor Sunny Lambe (Southwark Council), Councillor Alan Smith, Deputy Mayor Lewisham as well as Diggi Saxena Store Manager at Asda Old Kent Road, Claire Gager – Community Life Champion at Asda Old Kent Road were all in attendance where they had an opportunity to network and discuss community work in the executive lounges at The Den before moving onto the Lions Centre to watch the activities and help present medals, trophies and goody bags to all of those who won and participated in the day.

The Asda Foundation – the charitable arm of the retailer Asda - entered a three-year programme partnership in London in July 2013 with Active Communities Network to support young people from

the most disadvantaged areas of London to improve their skills for employment and other outcomes relating to their attitudes, confidence, self-esteem and education.

Active Communities Network deliver a package of sports and youth work to support young people into volunteering, accredited training and work-experience/placements.

David Briggs, Senior Manager Millwall Community Trust said: “It is Millwall Community Trust’s 30 year anniversary this year – we were one of the very first football clubs to start in the community world and have many synergies with Active Communities Network; education, sport participation, community development - this partnership is a good fit for the future.”

I RUSHED BACK TOO SOON FROM INJURY

LEE MARTIN can see the error of his ways with 20:20 hindsight vision.

If the winger had time again, he’d have rested his damaged toe for longer.

But his natural urge has always been “to come back a week early” and that, he now realises, was the “wrong idea”.

Martin was stamped on against Bournemouth in November and initially missed three weeks.

When he came back into the team, sprinting felt unnatural. “I was running on the outside of my foot,” he says.

The 28-year-old was then clattered in the ribs against Nottingham Forest at the end of January and sat out for another ten days.

It was against Leeds on Valentine’s Day that Martin’s troublesome toe came back to haunt him.

The original injury had altered his “running pattern”, putting pressure on his third metatarsal.

A hairline crack appeared after the game at Elland Road, and Martin has since missed seven weeks.

This time around, he’s seen his rehab through to the end.

He felt rusty on his return to action against Watford last weekend, but hopes there is enough time left in the season for him to make a difference.

“My foot is a lot better now,” Martin told the News. “I needed to settle things down from when I first hurt my toe.

“I came back a bit too soon from the toe injury because I just wanted to play football, but I didn’t give it enough time. I was running on the outside of my foot, and that led to a stress fracture.

“It feels good now because I’ve rested and it’s healed quickly.”

It’s been a frustrating campaign for Martin. In addition to his foot problems, he also had to bounce back from knee ligament damage in September.

“It’s been such a stop-start season for me,” he added. “I’ve had quite a few injuries but instead of settling them down, I’ve always tried to come back a week early.

“That’s either led to another injury or prolonged things. Long-term I’ve had the wrong idea but you can’t fault me for wanting to get out there.

“But I should’ve known better really. In hindsight it’s always obvious, but had I done it the right way around, I’d have probably played more games.

“That’s all down to me and nothing to do with the physios. It was purely me pushing to play even when I knew, at the back of my head, that I wasn’t 100 percent.

“If I’d left things a bit longer, I’d have been better off.

“Between my ribs, knee and foot, I’ve had three injuries that have been quite sore. Sometimes you have seasons like that, and then other seasons you can walk on water.

“This year it’s been dribs and drabs for me. To come straight back into it takes a while as you saw against Watford. I’d trained for only four

Harris' management style "moulded" on former bosses

NEIL HARRIS believes a keep-itsimple approach is helping him get the best out of Millwall's squad.

“Obviously I want to be back out there playing football - that’s what we get paid to do and that’s what we enjoy.”

When a centre back returns from a spell in the treatment room, the timing of his headers and positioning can be a bit off.

So what challenges does a winger face when he’s thrown back into competitive action?

“You’re not used to match situations yet,” he said. “[That affects] one-on-ones, running at someone and your agility, balance and coordination.

“You need to be playing matches to find your rhythm. Players harp on about match fitness but it is so crucial. When I came on against Watford, I did a couple of good things and a couple of bad things.

That’s where I’m at.

“Some people will dissect the game and say you’ve done more bad than good but, long-term, the

three things I did well will soon become six. Once I’ve got minutes under my belt, I know what I can do.”

Watching from the sidelines, Martin has been “really impressed” with interim boss Neil Harris.

“Chopper has taken to it really well and it’s been surprisingly natural for him so quickly,” Martin said.

“The boys have responded in a positive manner and so have the fans, which really helps. It’s a more uplifting environment to play in.

For the injured players watching from the stands, you want to be a part of that.

“Chopper makes it enjoyable and fun but his understanding of football is second to none. Not only that, his understanding of Millwall is spot-on - he knows what the fans want and what you have to be to be a Millwall player.

“He’s helping us, the boys are buying into it and that’s massive for

everyone. He’s given other people chances as well and they’ve taken on that responsibility and shown people what they’re capable of. It’s worked out well so far.”

Martin is in a minority of players with a contract for next season.

So how is he feeling about the future, be it in the Championship or League One? “I’m an optimistic person,” he said. “If you think negatively, you attract negativity. I think what we’ve got going at the moment is something special because everyone is on the same page.

“No matter what happens, Chopper can’t be judged on these ten games because he’s picking up the pieces. But I think he’s got a really bright future in management - it’s been very natural for him even though he’s still young.

“He’s been brilliant for all the boys and he’s given a couple of youngsters an opportunity to do well.”

Harris says working under Kenny Jackett and Ray Harford taught him that a straightforward style of management is the most effective.

“We’re trying to be quite basic and not over-complicate things," Harris revealed, speaking after a month in charge of the Lions.

"We don’t spend too long analysing games.

"Yes, we’re very respectful of the fact we must self-evaluate and we’re not neglectful of the opposition, but there is a style and way of playing for Millwall, which is a unique club, and our concern is to get that into the players.

"You have to have your own ideas and philosophy but mould it around other people. Kenny Jackett is a great coach because he made things so simple. That was a big thing I learned - don’t be over-complicated.

"I was very fortunate to work under the late Ray Harford who one year coached Blackburn to the Premier League title and the next year came to work at Millwall in League One. How lucky were we?

"Again, he made it so simple. One year he was working with Alan Shearer and Chris Sutton, the next year he was working with Neil Harris and Richard Sadlier."

Harris' interim stint in the Millwall hot-seat is being built upon a return to the core values of the club.

"Even the top managers of this club have either taken the time to find out about the philosophy or have learned quickly on the job," he added.

"Having an inside knowledge of how to get the fans to identify with the team is the biggest thing. The fans pay their

money and want to see a Millwall team on the pitch.

"I understand that, and how I translate that message to the players to get them to perform is something I’m learning about every day as a coach.

"I don’t think you can underestimate the link between the pitch and the stands at this club.

“There are old-fashioned values here.

What does it mean to play for this club? And a style of play is imperative.

"Our style of play won’t be exactly the same every game - we’re not afraid to change tactics and formations - but what the club stands for is what the players have to realise."

What is evident from Harris' time in charge so far is that he has a knack for making players believe in themselves again.

And he feels that having good manmanagement skills is important.

“I was a player’s player and a leader in the dressing room," Harris said. "I saw that as a big part of my role as a senior player.

"Naturally, I like to talk to people and make sure everyone is OK. If I see a dip in someone’s form or notice a problem, I’m naturally interested."

The elephant in the room is whether Harris will continue in the role beyond the end of the season.

“I can sit on the fence and say ‘let’s see how the next four games go’," he said.

"At the start, for me, it’s a learning curve and a question of whether I enjoy it and for the club to see if I take to the job, on and off the pitch.

"It’s plain to see at the moment that I am enjoying it, the day-to-day challenge and certainly match-days, but there’s no commitment either way.

"It really is open in terms of where we go after this.

"Nothing is going to be any clearer in the next week or two weeks - but in three weeks’ time I’m sure a decision will be made by both sides.”

After a dour first half, the game sparked into life when former Lions loanee Martyn Waghorn was sent off for kicking out at Dan Harding.

And ten minutes later, Abdou met Harding's teasing cross with a bullet header, which arrowed into the bottom corner to edge Millwall in front.

Things went from bad to worse for the Latics when Jason Pearce was given his marching orders for a rash lunge on Aiden O'Brien – but Ed Upson's reaction also earned him a red.

hat was a Millwall performance. That's what this club is about.

If the players hadn't learned anything from me or Dave Livermore before tonight, they have now. I don't necessarily condone melees but if things aren't going well and you need a spark at The Den, you have to take care of your own.

I've seen the incidents again. I can see arguments for all three red cards. We'll have to look at them again in the cold light of day on a big screen. Without sitting on the fence, we'll sit tight and have a look later.

But I can't ask for passion, commitment, tackles and challenges, and then moan at one of my players for looking after one of his teammates.

Gary Caldwell has got Wigan playing good football and they're suited to the way he wants to play. We knew they were going to have a lot of the football but we're a different club to that – we're about high-tempo, pressing and getting in people's faces.

Our game plan was to impact them and, with the way the game went, it worked.

But the celebrations had barely died down when referee Martin made another decisive intervention, sending off Pearce for a forceful tackle on O'Brien and then Upson for raising his hands.

Down to nine men, Wigan threw the kitchen sink at Millwall and Nelson stood firm to bravely block McClean's shot as space opened up for the winger inside the box.

But Gueye made the points safe in stoppage time when he raced clear and coolly found the bottom corner.

The night belonged to Abdou, however, who scored in a Millwall win at The Den for the first time in his Lions career.

After being mobbed by his teammates, the 30-year-old raced over to the dugout to celebrate his goal with former teammate Harris.

And the Millwall boss said afterwards: “Jimmy is a great fella and a great servant to Millwall.

“If anybody deserved that goal for their performances since I took over, it was certainly Jimmy. He’s got the ability to do that and I’ve been telling him so for seven years!

“He’s done it in special moments before – like against Leeds in the playoffs – but he can finish well on his day.

“I think his last goal was in training three-and-a-half years ago, so he’s

definitely picked his moment!”

JIMMY ABDOU’S flying header could prove to be a “big, big moment” in Millwall’s battle against the drop, according to goalkeeper David Forde.

The fans’ favourite, who last scored for the Lions way back in April 2013, grabbed the decisive first goal during Tuesday’s do-or-die clash with relegation rivals Wigan.

And if Millwall are to pull off another Great Escape this season, Forde believes Abdou’s emphatic finish in the 2-0 win over the Latics could be a turning point.

“It’s about time Jimmy scored!” Forde told the News. “I’m absolutely delighted for him because he loves it here at this club. He’s scored one very important goal before and I was there that night at Elland Road when his goal against Leeds took us to Wembley.

“If we stay up, we can look back at big, big moments and this would certainly be one of them.”

Forde belives Abdou’s diving header embodied the Millwall values that interim manager Neil Harris has restored to the side since his appointment.

“Neil has brought a bit of resilience back into the team and that’s what Millwall is all about in times of adversity,” he said.

“Jimmy has summed that up by scoring a fantastic goal. We’re tough to beat under Neil and we’re looking to turn The Den into a fortress again so that teams don’t like coming here.

“We’ve got it rocking and it’s starting to turn into the place of old.”

Anything other than three points against Wigan would have been a hammer blow to Millwall’s survival chances.

“It was a must-win game, make no mistake about it,” Forde said. “A draw wouldn’t have been good enough. It was a cagey occasion and a bit tit for tat but we managed to score the vitallyimportant first goal.

“There was a lot riding on the game and it wasn’t going to be the prettiest. At this stage of this season it’s all about results and performances go out the window.

“We’ve played ten times better than that this season and been on the end of some tough-to-take defeats.

“We were poor for the first half-hour but the manager made a fantastic change of formation at half time and we managed to get a foothold at the game.

“It’s always good when The Den is rocking like that and we’re attacking our end in the second half. It’s a fantastic result.”

Rotherham, the side Millwall have to leapfrog in the table, have been charged by the Football League for fielding an ineligible player and could be docked three points.

But Forde says the Lions have to put

that out of their minds for now.

“At the end of the day you have to wait until the decision is made - it’s all whats, ifs and maybes at the moment,” said the ‘keeper.

“We could be blessed and it could be the bit of luck we need but we have to stay present and focused on the job in hand.”

PCO Drivers Required

The Lions had been on a club-record 13-game winless run on home soil prior to their 2-1 derby victory over Charlton.

And they bounced back quickly from defeat to Watford to triumph over relegation rivals Wigan in a must-win fixture on Tuesday night.

That is the first midweek game Millwall have won at The Den in an astonishing 576 days.

And Harris is delighted that home results are starting to pick up under his leadership.

“That was one of the key things when I was asked to take over because the home form has been disappointing,” Harris said.

“There was certainly no lack of effort from Ian Holloway or the players, it just hasn’t quite happened.

“Now we’ve gone back to Millwall basics and won two high-pressure games - against Charlton in a local derby and against Wigan when it meant a lot to both clubs.

“I’m really proud of the fact we’ve scored goals and won both games.”

Of the Lions’ four remaining fixtures, only one - against Derby - is in SE16.

“That’s a shame now,” Harris added.

“It’s not just about the next four games, but next season and the season after that.

“It’s about a group of players realising that The Den is ours and that this is our home.

“I’ve played in teams here when nobody wanted to play against us.

You’d beat teams before they even turned up and we have to go back to that mentality.”

Harris says it is doubtful that midfielder Shaun Williams, who limped off against the Latics, will play any part at Cardiff this weekend.

He revealed: “All I know is that Shaun walked into the dressing room on crutches, which was a precaution really, but anybody who’s on crutches after a Tuesday game is going to struggle to play on Saturday.”
