NEWINGTON COUNCILLOR James Coldwell is the first local politician in Southwark to quit Labour over the party's handling of Brexit, citing the recent NEC decision not to fully back a second referendum as 'the final straw'.

The councillor, who was temporarily kicked out of Southwark Labour Group in response to voting against the whip in favour of a 'People's Vote last November, published his party resignation letter on Twitter last week.

In the incisive missive, delivered to the Labour Party's general secretary, Jennie Formby, Coldwell said he had deliberated his decision over many months, and praised his 'talented, passionate and tireless' colleagues.

Leaving Labour after a decade, the 33year-old said, was 'nothing to do with them, and everything to do with the national party'. And, most importantly, Brexit, describing Labour as ‘missing in action since the 2016 referendum’.

He went on to describe the National Executive Committee ruling, which meant Labour will only look at the option of a second referendum if a general election cannot be forced, as a 'fudge' that had left Labour's credibility 'shot to pieces'.

In the run up to this month's EU elections he described how Brexit vacillations are leaving Labour candidates floundering, before heavily criticising Corbyn's leadership and foreign policy stances, and branding many of the party's key pledges as 'unrealistic and populist'.

The most eviscerating analysis was reserved for the leadership's handling of anti-Semitism and bullying claims, and the ramifications for his own constituency party, where 'in place of debate and compromise there is rigidity and distrust'.

Speaking to the News on Thursday, Cllr Coldwell said he was not the only councillor who had been struggling to reconcile his own politics with the direction taken by Corbyn’s party, claiming ‘several’ other councillors with similar doubts were in contact over a Whatsapp group.

He also claimed his constituency was so fractured members sat on opposing sides at meetings, depending on whether they were Corbyn-supporters or not, and alleged a clear pattern of

“He is not alone in being frustrated by Brexit but I think it is the wrong decision to leave Labour at this crucial time for the country,” he said.

“There are lots of views in the Labour Party on Brexit and huge debate about how to find the best solution for the country, but the thing that unites all of us is a belief that we achieve more together

than we achieve alone and that it is only Labour that can bring communities and the country together and puts our shared values into action.

“While the government wreaks havoc with its disastrous handling of Brexit, in Southwark, we are showing what Labour values mean: free swimming and gym use for all our residents, the biggest council house building programme in the country, more green flag parks than ever before and the best recycling rates in innerLondon.”

On Twitter he took a somewhat less conciliatory tone, branding the decision as 'self-obsession'.

Speaking to the News, Coldwell said he was ‘not surprised’ by Cllr John’s response, but argued it failed to offer any kind of constructive way through the muddle.

He said failing to engage with much of the substance of his letter seemed to

suggest the council leader could well be in tacit agreement.

Coldwell told the News he would ‘definitely not’ be joining the Lib Dems, but was exploring options to continue campaigning for a confirmatory vote in Southwark; including with Change UK – the independent group.

Although he has left Labour, Coldwell has not formally stepped down as a councillor and has said he does not intend to trigger a by-election.

But there have already been calls for a fresh vote to be held, including from within the party.

Labour Goose Green councillor James McAsh argued: "We are both councillors solely because the ballot had a Labour rose by our name.

"The people of Newington elected three Southwark Labour councillors.

"Perhaps they now want an Independent but they should be given that choice."

A 22-FOOT-HIGH baby is due to be delivered in Geraldine Mary Harmsworth Park this weekend, as part of an outdoor theatre production described by its artistic director as ‘a cross between Godzilla, the Paralympics opening ceremony and a sci-fi film.”

Bigger than a double decker bus, the giant baby is part of a theatre extravaganza, ZARA, telling the story of a mother and her fight to product her newborn daughter as it examines learning disability and parenthood.

Created by Mind the Gap, a theatre company, and outdoor art specialists,

Walk the Plank, Zara has been three years in the making and is described as an epic event for all the family.

Featuring a cast of more than 100, a music score by Sarah Llewellyn, and army tanks, cherry pickers and 4x4s, the production was debuted in Halifax, Yorkshire, to more than 3,500 people.

Artistic Director, Joyce Nga Yu Lee said: “There are poignant stories to be told with theatre and this is one; whilst it’s fun, upbeat, contains ridiculous dances and baby ‘poo’ - which we’ve affectionately named ‘Poo-mageddon’ - there is also a story about parenting, motherhood and people with learning disabilities.

“When I started working on this

project, I knew I wanted to make it big - I wanted it to be in your face so that people had to take notice.

“I always imagined it to be like a cross between Godzilla, the Paralympics opening ceremony, and a sci-fi film!

“I think ZARA will stay with you long after you leave.”

ZARA will be held at Geraldine Mary Harmsworth Park, home to the Imperial War Museum, on Friday May 10, and Saturday May 11, from 9pm, with refreshment from 7pm.

A VICTIM of the London Bridge terror attack kissed her fiancé and told him she loved him just moments before being hit by terrorists deliberately driving a van into pedestrians, an inquest has heard.

The inquest into the atrocity on June 3, 2017 which claimed the lives of eight innocent people opened on Tuesday at the Old Bailey and heard moving tributes from families of the victims.

Opening the inquest, Chief Coroner of England and Wales, Mark Lucraft, told the court that the lives of many had been torn apart in less than ten minutes in a night of “high and terrible drama.”

All eight victims – Chrissy Archibald, Sebastien Belanger, Kirsty Boden, Ignacio Echeverría Miralles de Imperial, James McMullan, Alexandre Pigeard, Xavier Thomas, and Sara Zelenak – received their fatal injuries within just three minutes of the van mounting the pavement, the court heard.

During their rampage, the three terrorists mowed down pedestrians on the bridge in a rented van, before leaving the vehicle and “indiscriminately” stabbing people with twelve-inch knives.

Among the heart-breaking details to emerge on the first day of the inquest as families paid tributes to their loved ones was that Canadian Chrissy Archibald, 30, told her fiancé she loved him just moments before her death at the hands of the terrorists.

Her partner, Tyler Ferguson, told the court: “At one point, Chrissy stopped me out of nowhere, grabbed me close and gave me a passionate kiss after telling me she loved me.

“I remember it being a warm summer’s evening and the sun had just gone down. Then the attack took place and Chrissy was killed.”

The inquest will establish the facts of the night and also examine whether lessons can be learned from the future, said the Chief Coroner.

Alongside the eight innocent victims who lost their lives, another 48 people were seriously injured in the attack, Mr Lucraft added.

The inquest, which will be followed by another hearing for the inquests of the killers, continues.

THE DATE for the judicial review into Southwark Council’s planning approval of Elephant and Castle’s regeneration has been set at the High Court in Westminster.

The hearing will take place on July 17 and 18 of this year, with campaigners hoping to overturn the council’s decision to greenlight Delancey’s plans.

A coalition of those opposed to the regeneration argue the scheme fails to provide adequate social housing in an area with high need. Just 116 homes of nearly 1,000 will be for social rent.

A crowdfunder to pay the legal costs has raised more than £7,500. Jerry Flynn from the 35% Campaign which lobbies for more social housing, said: “A legal fight is always long and costly, but we are determined to do everything we can to get social rented homes that we simply cannot afford to lose.”

A spokesperson for Public Interest Law Centre, which has backed the campaign, explained: “This case highlights the problem of big new developments just not providing enough social rented housing in parts of London where it is most desperately needed.

“Local people are putting Southwark Council on notice that they must get the

maximum amount of social housing from big developers like Delancey and not be bullied into settling for less.”

Meanwhile, traders have been disappointed

by Tesco permanently closing – due to a rodent infestation – months earlier than planned, saying reduced footfall is threatening their businesses.

They have also opposed the erection of new hoarding around the bottom of the escalator to the former Palaces Bingo and bowling Hall, which is now vacant.

Meanwhile, Delancey was forced to backtrack after Southwark Council intervened and asked for a series of plastic ‘spikes’ to be removed from planters in the area.

Responding to queries from residents, a council spokesperson tweeted: “There's no place in Southwark for spikes and other measures that make people feel unwelcome.”

A seventeen-year-old boy was arrested in Norwich on Tuesday, and remains in custody.

A 33-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender at a residential address in south-east London the same night, and was released on bail.

Officers say the two are known to each other.

The murder investigation is being led

by DCI Richard Leonard, who said: "Two arrests have been made but we still need to hear from anyone with information that could help us.

“We are following a number of active

lines of enquiry based on CCTV, forensic analysis and local engagement.

"McCaulay was chased from Newington Gardens, which is known as Gaol Park, into Tiverton Street where he was attacked and found shortly after by LAS medics.

HERITAGE CAMPAIGNERS have strongly criticised plans for Sellar’s Vinegar Yard development in Bermondsey, saying it would “gut” the historical architecture of the site.

The development would see the Vinegar Yard warehouse turned into a sixteen-storey high block, with the façade of the building retained.

Campaigners at the Victorian Society have criticised the design, saying it would damage the historic warehouse, while the building’s height would “contribute to the steady destruction of the historic character of Southwark.”

However, Sellar – the firm also behind the Shard - fiercely defended its proposals, saying they were the result of “detailed and sensitive consideration” and “extensive consultation” with local residents.

The Victorian Society said the bid to ‘gut’ the original fabric of the warehouse,

dating from between 1857 to 1872, would remove a direct link of Southwark’s industrial heritage.

The structure would also be out of character for the area surrounding Bermondsey Street, and “would set a precedent for further high-rise buildings in the area to be erected.”

Olivia Stockdale, Conservation Adviser for the Victorian Society, said: “The proposed plans would render the remains of the warehouse as wallpaper to the plinth of a glass office block.

“The proposed use of glass rather than brick would further create an extreme contrast with other buildings in the conservation area.

“It is important that despite its proximity to London Bridge, Bermondsey maintains its own historic individuality, and any development should be sympathetic to the area and its character.”

But Sellar responded that the warehouse was been vacant for over ten years and is in disrepair.

A COMMEMORATION for a talented cricketer from Kennington shot dead in Trinidad has been held at the British High Commission on the third anniversary of his death.

As the News reported in February, Adrian St John’s mother, Sharon, has set up a foundation in his name to help continue her son’s legacy and help other young people achieve their potential both in Southwark and in Trinidad.

The former St Thomas the Apostle student was just 22 when he was shot dead while on holiday in Trinidad in 2016.

Adrian, who grew up near Oval Cricket Ground, went on to become captain of the Chris Gayle Cricket Academy and play for Alleyn’s in Dulwich.

The official launch of the foundation, on April 10, also coincided with the 30th anniversary of an exchange scheme which sees youngsters from the UK travel to the Caribbean to play cricket, set up by Michael Broad MBE. So far, the new Adrian St John foundation has donated £250 to English Martyrs Roman Catholic School where local MP Neil Coyle and two of Adrian’s

Man ‘critical’ after ‘pouring acid on himself’ in the dock

A DEFENDANT remained in a critical condition as the News went to press after ‘pouring acid on himself’ in the dock at Inner London Crown Court.

An “urgent investigation” has been launched into how the defendant was able to pour the substance over himself on Monday, April 29 in courtroom ten.

The emergency services rushed to the court, on Newington Causeway, to reports of the man in his fifties who had “doused himself with a noxious substance” shortly after noon.

A female dock officer was also injured by the acid, but her injuries

were minor, said the Met. She was taken to hospital as a precaution.

Police are investigating how the defendant could have taken the acid into the dock despite heavy security.

A spokesperson for the Courts and Tribunals Service said last week the service was “deeply concerned” by the incident.

“The safety and security of all court users is our priority and we’re deeply concerned about the incident at Inner London Sessions House,” the spokesperson said.

“Police are urgently investigating what happened and it would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage.”

Trinidad tribute to murdered cricketer

While in Trinidad, Adrian’s family donated cheques to Vance River and La Brea Roman Catholic schools and another school, Arouca Anglican Primary, has announced it will start a scholarship in Adrian’s name for a child who does well in their SEA exams, the SATS equivalent.

On top of cash donations, the foundation hopes to take second-hand cricket and other sports equipment to give to children in Trinidad unable to afford new items.

A ROTHERHITHE leisure centre has resumed normal service following a tragic swimming pool death last week.

Seven Islands Leisure Centre on Lower Road had been closed all day Wednesday, May 1 after a man in his fifties was found unresponsive in the swimming pool the previous evening.

He was rushed to hospital by the emergency services but sadly died.

Last week a spokesperson for Everyone Active, which runs the centre, confirmed that classes had resumed as normal following the

incident shortly after six o’clock on Tuesday evening.

“We were able to re-open the Seven Islands Leisure Centre this morning and the centre has now resumed normal hours and its full timetable,” Mark Basker, Everyone Active Regional Contract Manager, told the News on Thursday.

BIRD-SONG FROM Rotherhithe’s Stave Hill Ecological Park is being played through speakers to rushed commuters at London Bridge station.

The live audio stream of the park’s sounds are part of an art installation called ‘Sounds Interrupted’, running until tomorrow, Friday May 10.

People playing sports, walking dogs, and overflying aircrafts will also feature as part of the stream.

Ian Hanson, Network Rail’s route stations director said redevelopment of the station meant it could play host to

interactive art installations.

“I’m sure people will find the sound of bird song quite soothing,” he said.

The installation forms part of Soundcamp 2019, a weekend of free workshops and talks based at Stave Hill from May 4 to 5.

Grant Smith, of Soundcamp, said the live-stream would highlight the ways Southwark has been a “pioneer of community-based ecology in the city.”

“We chose the Reception area of London Bridge station, in part, because we hope the sound installation might be encountered by station staff passing through the area as they sign in for their daily duties,” added the artist Jessie

LONDON SOUTH Bank University has improved its league table rankings in a newly-published guide.

The annual Complete University Guide 2020 ranked the institution six places higher than it did the previous year, from 93rd to 87th.

It has risen a total of 21 places in the previous two years. Rankings factored in student satisfaction, research, entry standards, the proportion of good honours degrees awarded, graduate prospects and completion rates.

Professor David Phoenix, ViceChancellor of LSBU said: “I am pleased that the long-term investment the University has made into improving and enhancing the career prospects, aspirations and graduate outcomes of our students is paying off.”

Professor Phoenix credited the increase in ranking to improved employability and graduate outcomes at the university.

“At LSBU we have created a

dedicated, in-house careers advisory service to provide advice and guidance to our students about their career prospects,” he said.

“In 2019 we launched our new Passmore Centre for Apprenticeship which is fast becoming a one stop shop for students to meet with local employers and learn about local employment opportunities available to them.

“The University’s drive towards gaining industry recognition for the high calibre of our students, the excellence of our teaching staff as demonstrated by our TEF Silver award and the quality of the degree courses and range of apprenticeships on offer, has greatly improved our ratings and overall chances of success, both nationally and in London.”

The university, based on Borough Road, has around 18,000 students and around 1,700 members of staff.

THIS MONTH Millwall fans and their children will be able to take part in a mass pitch invasion at the Den, as the club hosts it’s first-ever ‘Big Sleepover’ to raise money for the homeless.

Organisers Millwall Community Trust is now calling on businesses to sponsor the event in aid of Crisis.

The Bermondsey club is the only one in the English football league to hold such an event with tickets priced at just £25 for a two person tent. “Charlton did a similar thing but they only allowed 20 tents on the pitch and it was just for junior members without their parents,” Sean Daly, the sport development manager at the Trust told the News.

“We are allowing 150 tents and the pitch will be torn-up the next day. But we would really like support from local sponsors, people, businesses, partners and suppliers to ensure as much money as possible is raised for ‘Crisis, ” he added.

My four years in Parliament I T IS four years since I won the 2015 election in Bermondsey and Old Southwark. I remain proud of the brilliant support from the local community which helped me win and I continue to try and stand up for the issues most important to people here.

In the snap 2017 general election I won again with a tripled majority of almost 13,000 and more people voting for me than any candidate ever in our constituency's history! I am still enormously grateful for such overwhelming support. I continue to campaign weekly and the doorstep by doorstep conversations still help alert me to super-local issues, especially certain antisocial behaviour as well as allowing direct feedback on my work in Parliament, with Europe a dominant, but positive, feature of many chats! If I am ever in doubt about an issue in Westminster I know a few hours talking to people in Bermondsey, Rotherhithe, Walworth and the Borough will help reassure!

One of the nicest things in the last four

years, is being able to make a positive difference to local people. The thank you cards on my office wall at Jamaica Road, as well as the chocolates and other gifts for helping win back a muchneeded disability benefit, or sort a delay with the council, are always appreciated.

In four years it has been frustrating to be in Opposition. I would like the chance to be our community's voice in Government. But from the Labour backbenches I have managed to win some campaigns. Terminally ill people will get more support with their Personal Independent Payments after I helped change the law. I am also pleased to have taken my background running a charity for carers and disabled people onto the Work and Pensions select committee to improve other support.

Employers affected by attacks like those our community suffered at London Bridge and Borough Market will now get extra help as a result of my work to improve Terror Insurance cover and JustGiving will also no longer make a profit from donations to people or areas affected by terrorism after my campaign.

One of the reasons I believe local people chose me in 2015 was because of the impact of the Cameron/Clegg Coalition. My Lib Dem predecessor backed policies like the Bedroom Tax, tripling tuition fees and cutting the police. Local people know what the damage has been and, sadly, I still see constituents suffering weekly. One of the biggest problems people bring me every week is Universal Credit which the Lib Dems helped introduce and has been a massively damaging issue for thousands of people in Southwark, including many working people unable to cover housing costs and forced to use local foodbanks.

I do not pretend it has been an easy four years for our country. Two general elections, divisions within political parties, a bitterly fought referendum soured with foreign influence, overspending and law breaking, and the murder of my friend Jo Cox. Thankfully, the fascist who killed her did not win and Jo's legacy lives on through the work of the foundation continuing to tackle the issues she worked so hard on.

EAGLE-EYED FANS of BBC’s quiz shows might spot a few local faces in the ad breaks.

As part of BBC One’s ‘Oneness’ ads, a small clip plays before many TV shows showcasing “communities that are

passionate about what they do.”

Among them are a group of skaters from Southwark who have most commonly appeared on our screens just prior to installations of the soap, Doctors. They are not new, however.

The skaters have been gracing our tellies since 2017, and were kept in the roster when the BBC reviewed the idents in July last year. Since then they’ve appeared a reported 125 times – someone has established a website which keeps count - most recently before Tuesday’s episode of Pointless.

HIS WEEK we announce the winner of our annual blue plaque scheme, run in partnership with Southwark Heritage and Southwark Council. Southwark has always been a changing borough, and one with some architectural wonders.

But in modern times we have also borne the scars of derelict industry, blitzed housing, and the march of redevelopment.

What makes our blue plaque scheme different is that we recognise the recent past, living history, and the people from our past who are still part of our present.

You don’t have to be the most famous or successful person to get one of our plaques, and a building doesn’t need to be hundreds of years old.

This year’s winner – and where the plaque will be placed - is a perfect example of the attributes we believe make Southwark one of the best boroughs to live in.

It is a lovely building, and a place with great history. Most importantly, it’s a place that is still a big part of many people’s lives.

This year, as always, we’re proud to recognise our living history and community. A big thank you to everyone who voted, and sent in nominations.

The inquest shows the bravery and unimaginable horror

EARLY TWO years ago, Southwark was shaken by unimaginable horror. The bustle of London Bridge and Borough Market was torn by three terrorists who drove a rented van into pedestrians in an act of carnage, before indiscriminately stabbing others with twelve-inch knives.

Eight were killed; forty-eight were seriously injured; numerous more lives turned irreparably upsidedown.

The inquest into the events of June 3, 2017, which opened this week, will establish the facts of what happened on that warm summer’s night and examine whether lessons can be learned for the future.

But it will hear, too, tales of extraordinary bravery in the face of danger. The humanity of those who rushed to help while three terrorists shattered and snatched lives away with their inhumane acts.

Indeed as Chief Coroner Mark Lucraft remarked in his opening statement: “It is important to acknowledge that many lives were saved by the rapid response of members of the public and by members of the emergency services.”

It is an opportunity, too, for the families of those who tragically lost their lives to share stories of those they loved. The details are heart-rending.

Among them, as we report, is the portrait of Chrissy Archibald by her loving fiancé Tyler Ferguson, who told him only moments before her life was cruelly snatched away that she loved him.

Recollections heard in court from the parents, siblings, partners and acquaintances of the other innocents killed in the atrocity are no less moving.

The inquest continues, and is expected to last weeks. It will be wide-reaching and exhaustive. This paper will endeavour to cover as much as of it as we can.

Unfortunately there is no difference between opposing migration and opposing migrants.

To do the first simply makes life more difficult for the second – mainly working class people who wish to travel and make a better life for themselves. Sadly people have always made these divisive arguments – victimising and demonising Jewish immigrants at the start of the 20th century and Irish immigrants before that.

In addition, ending of Freedom of Movement takes away the right of all of us in the UK to live, study and work in the 27 other EU countries. Jazzit and Tony Sharp may not value these rights, but millions of us do.

If Freedom of Movement is such a bad thing, why don’t people advocate stopping it within the UK as well? We never hear about Northerners moving to London having a depressive impact on wages and

depopulating the North, but if Eastern Europeans coming here has such a bad effect, people moving within the UK must presumably do as well?

If people are worried about low pay and exploitation by employers, they need to join a trade union. This is what brought us higher wages, better conditions, the welfare state and the NHS. Not building walls and preventing working class people from living where they want to.

Resident’s angry letter to Veolia following new charge for garden waste

Dear Veolia Recycling Team,

We recently received a letter from you stating that from June, you will no longer be collecting garden waste unless we pay for it.

You state "not everyone ... is actually making use of the garden waste service. We believe that it is fairer that only those using the service contribute towards the running of it."

How is this fair? We pay council tax for a wide variety of

services, and our household certainly does not make use of all the services.

I am perfectly happy to make contributions towards services I don't use (such as children's services, adult social care, etc) because it is good for the community.

In return, I expect others to contribute towards the vitally important function of all forms of waste disposal.

We have a very small garden and create just a few brown paper sacks of waste a year. But at least by having trees and plants in our garden, we are contributing to a better atmosphere and environment for all.

Now we are being penalised for that. It's tantamount to a garden tax. And that isn't fair.

I would be very surprised if anyone makes use of this new, paid-for service. It seems likely to me that most people will now just put garden waste in their regular household rubbish.

I urge you to reconsider this unfair garden tax.

“These boys are now in a foster home, where they’re being fed kitten formula milk in addition to solid food.”

Rye Lane ‘back to normal’ by June

AN URGENT appeal has been launched after three ‘abandoned’ kittens were found in a heavily taped cardboard box on Bermondsey’s Spa Road.

“But unfortunately dumping cats and kittens in this way always places them in danger.”

The charity, which finds new homes for unwanted cats and kittens, is now appealing for the owner of the kittens’ mother urgently to contact them.

“We’re concerned about these kittens’ mum, who will need neutering to prevent more unwanted kittens,” said the charity.

“If there are any more unwanted kittens in the household, please contact us and we will take them in for re-homing.

“Any info about this family would be greatly appreciated as we would really like to help the owner prevent this from happening again – we won’t be judgmental, so please get in touch and ask for help.”

It added that the owner would be given a voucher to cover the full cost of neutering the kittens’ mother at any vets.

The charity told the News that it runs a free voucher service for those living in South-East London postcodes for everyone regardless of income, which will cover the cost of neutering cats.

SGN said the company has now put 97 per cent of its new plastic piping down to replace old the metal mains.

The sixth and final phase of the project, originally expected to last until January 2020, started on Tuesday.

This section of the project sees engineers working between Choumert Road and Sternhall Lane, with Rye Lane closed to traffic between Hanover Park and Sternhall Lane. The road will stay open to pedestrians as usual.

A diversion is in place via Hanover Park and Consort Road, with temporary three-way traffic lights placed at the junction with Copeland Road. During peak times, these will be manually operated. In a statement sent to the News, a SGN spokesperson said: “We expect to complete our work in Rye Lane by mid-June. “

Maudsley chair steps down

SOUTH LONDON and Maudsley NHS Trust’s chair, Roger Paffard, has stepped down citing ‘health concerns’ as a factor in his decision.

The trust announced the news to staff last week, on April 30, and confirmed non-executive director June Mulroy would act as interim chair until a successor had been appointed.

HE COTTRELLS were first recorded in Bermondsey and Rotherhithe in the 18th century and many of them are still here, writes Michael Holland....

Tommy Cottrell came into the world at Guy’s Hospital in 1935, followed by brother Harry in 1937. The family home then was in Park Buildings, where Tommy’s dad Fred was a stevedore in Surrey Docks and his mum Nell a park keeper.

Tommy’s dad was originally an act on the music hall circuit after winning a competition to ride a ‘mad mule’ for 20 seconds at Camberwell Palace.

“As he got off the mule,” begins Tommy “it bit him, so me dad bit him back!”

A showbiz career beckoned and for a while Fred Cottrell was a minor star but when he met Nell Roden, who came from a long line of leather workers, she wasn’t going to have him gallivanting all over the country, so he found work in the docks.

For young Tom, growing up in Rotherhithe was always fun. “We played Tin Can Copper, and any wall would have a goal and a wicket

painted on it where you could play football or cricket… Knock Down Ginger was a favourite and we’d make our own scooters and Go-Karts from wheels, bits of wood and bottle tops laying about.”

By the time war came the family had moved to 13 Tissington Street and Tom went to the school at the end of his turning, Rotherhithe New Road School. “I remember in 1944 we were playing in our street and a Messerschmidt flew over and I could see the pilot looking down, and Georgie Wicks started throwing stones at it!” Tommy laughs at the memory before telling a tale of Charlie “Wee Willie Harris, the legendary rock ’n’ roller, running indoors to escape the bombs and careening straight into the bannisters.”

Because of the dangers of inner city life at that time, Tom was evacuated to Norfolk and Mansfield, which meant he survived the war to go on to Credon Road School, which he also survived. He recalls vividly Mr Mitchell, the Head Teacher, asking him what he wanted to do when he left. Tom replied honestly “I’d like to

“My first tug was the Plaudit in 1951 when I was 15 and the boat was brand new. I loved it,” he says with a glint of nostalgia in his eye.

“It was something different every day and I was working with lovely people.”

Tom followed in the footsteps of his father.

The river has always been a big part of Cottrell life. “All me cousins and uncles were in the dock, Harry was a docker, me dad was a stevedore and I was a lighterman. My first tug was the Plaudit in 1951 when I was 15 and the boat was brand new. I loved it,” he says with a glint of nostalgia in his eye.

Like many local boys Tom supported Millwall. “The first fight I ever saw there was when my dad knocked a bloke out in 1947!” The man had knocked young Tommy over while verbally abusing the players and Fred Cottrell took umbrage. This early initiation into the Den did not put Tom off and he still goes to the games. In fact, for many years, along with his brother and friends, he was a train steward for the away games.

A highlight in the young Cottrell’s life was when, at 15, he had a trial for Millwall. He takes up the tale. “After

20 minutes I was called off but I told ‘em I wasn’t finished yet. “We have,” they said!” Tom laughs now at the memory. “What a cheek, eh? So I nicked a shirt and a football.”

Tom’s working life on water was interrupted by National Service in the Royal Marines, two years that took him all over the Mediterranean and North Africa, and on his return he went back to work as a lighterman. In his hometown once again, Tommy frequented all the local pubs along where the family was then living in Jamaica Road, and it was in the Concorde where he met his future wife June; they went on to have three sons.

“We all wore suits on Saturday nights,” he says. “They’d cost about 15 quid, and a ‘Slim Jim’ tie was half-acrown.”

Tommy’s mum, Nell Cottrell, worked as a park keeper in St James’s Park for many years, in charge of the famous slide that brought joy to generations of children. But sometimes all those kids got a bit much for Nell. “My mum’s hut was right under the slide and all day in the summer holidays she’d hear the footsteps pounding up the stairs and

then the whooshing of the coconut mats as they came down - the incessant noise used to drive her up the wall,” says Tom. “So she used to throw a bucket of water over the wooden slide, which would stop the mats sliding. ‘Sorry, it’s closed today,' she’d say to the kids, 'It’s too wet!'" More hilarious stories about Nell, Aunt May and Aunt Flo followed, but there are too many to include here.

When the London Docks went into decline, Tommy’s work faded out with it. He bought a couple of trucks and tried his hand at haulage, but it was less than ideal. “I was always working and never saw June and the kids.” A job at the Thames Barrier came up when that was being built, taking him back to the Thames, and when that job ended in the ‘80s the family took over the Windsor Castle pub, in Coopers Road, where they stayed for four years. “The pub game was dying even back then, so I ended up working on the council for a while before returning once more to the river and working on the Woolwich Ferry.”

he Dulwich Festival returns this month with a smorgasbord of art, music, theatre, literature and walks, writes Luara Burgoine...

This year’s theme is ‘belonging’. As always the Festival celebrates the local artistic community with the everpopular Artists’ Open House taking place across both weekends when over 200 artists invite the public into their homes and studios, providing an up close and personal dialogue and insight into their art.

The Festival embraces the local history and architecture as local treasures such as the Dulwich Picture Gallery, Bell House, Dulwich College and Christ Chapel, amongst others, play host to events.

For music lovers, the Harlem Meer Cats are back, recreating music heard at the Cotton Club in the 20s and 30s, including hits of Duke Ellington and Cab Calloway.

The ever-popular festival Ceilidh returns, along with the Festival of Choirs, and Adam Norsworthy who returns to Dulwich Festival after two previous sold-out shows. Regarded by many as one of the country’s finest blues singer-songwriters, he will be playing a first set with LSO second violinist Tom Norris and then a full band set with his group The Mustangs, one of the UK’s most established

Upstaged, by photographer Fizz is a close up and personal look at musicians and celebrities when they are at ease and in their private space backstage, where they are comfortable with Fizz buzzing around with her camera.

Upstaged also has action shots of performers on stage, including Beyoncé and The Libertines, with Libertines front man Pete Doherty featuring in dressing room shots as well.

Of course, there are also posed photos of those that like to pose, and the venue was blessed by their presence for the launch: the photographed posing by their photograph to be photographed,

as it were.

In the main section was an exhibition of paintings of iconic rock stars by Dan Martin. After the success of his 2017 exhibition Martin returns to Shortwave Cafe with 14 expressive studies in this show titled Cult Rock.

Combining his love of art and music he has produced a series of iconic portraits including Lennon, Dylan, Morrison, Hendrix, Bowie and others who can get away with using one name. The eye-catching artworks are all created with thick paint laid on with heavy, painterly brush strokes that add depth and feeling.

Perhaps no other two exhibitions were better suited to share one space.

The Handlebards, a troupe of cycling actors who perform charmingly chaotic and environmentally sustainable Shakespeare plays across the globe, are putting on an original version on Much Ado About Nothing.

Also taking inspiration from the great Bard, Tim Crouch performs his one man show, I, Malvolio which reimagines Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night from the point of view of its most notoriously abused steward.

DULWICH VILLAGE’S Grafton Dance Hall, the historic home of ballroom dancing in London once owned by ballroom supremoes Bob Burgess and Doreen Freeman, has waltzed to victory in the News’ 2018 blue plaque competition.

The dance studio on Village Way won this year’s public vote by a landslide – and more than a thousand votes ahead of runner-up Max Bygraves.

Upon finding out Grafton had won, Paul Burbedge, who has leased the building since 2010 and spearheaded the winning campaign, said: “I can't begin to express my delight, this is just fantastic news and has even brought a tear to my eye.

“All that effort by all those people did actually pay off. I am almost overwhelmed with emotion and a huge sense of relief.

“Bob and Doreen needed the recognition, the building needed the recognition - this is such good news.”

Bob and Doreen were both icons of ballroom dancing at its heyday; world champions whose style has influenced the way we dance today.

Grafton has been graced by dozens of top competitors since they took it on in the early 70s.

“Just about every World, European, United Kingdom and British ballroom dance champion since 1972 have danced on the very boards laying here today,” Paul told the News earlier this year.

“Famous names such as Len Goodman, Shirley Ballas and Anton Du Beke have all been here at one time or another.

“The Grafton was the hub of the ballroom dance world, synonymous with Bob Burgess and Doreen Freeman.

“What better way is there to acknowledge, that Grafton Hall is to Ballroom dancing what Wimbledon is to tennis, Wembley is to football, Twickenham is to rugby, than by placing a blue plaque on the front of the building?”

Those who backed Grafton to win included ex-Strictly coach Len Goodman who said: “There are many dance locations in the UK worthy of a blue plaque but none more so than the iconic Grafton.”

IT HAS been quite the debut season for Millwall Lionesses striker Evie Clarke.

The ex-Arsenal trainee has experienced a lot since notching five goals against Bristol City in 2015 as a sixteen-year old.

Now 21, Clarke finds herself leading the line in a youthful Millwall Lionesses side while also attempting to gain a Sports Studies degree at the University of Hertfordshire.

“It is tough, I just make the most of my days.” Clarke said when asked how she juggles university and football.

“I wake up early and just do my university work. On Friday, I came to training early and sat in the café before the girls came in and caught up on my work. It’s quite hard to balance, playing 90 minutes on a Wednesday and then 90 minutes on the Sunday. Your body does feel tired.

“I have adapted to it, and I’m not going to make excuses.”

As well as university, Millwall’s season in the Women’s Championship, where they finished last, also taught her some valuable lessons as a footballer.

“I have never been in a team that has been bottom of the league, so this season has been quite a good experience in a weird way,” Clarke admitted. “I was not used to losing quite as much as we did, but I think it has been a learning curve for me, and especially for the younger players. They were probably not used to it either.

“I think at first, losing 8-0 three times on the bounce was really tough and knocked our confidence. Afterwards though, we did a little bit of team bonding. After training we would stay behind and get together. It was for our own self-respect, we thought to ourselves we do not want to lose 8-0 again, it was embarrassing.

“We trained even harder and said to each other let’s not let it happen again.

We came together both on and off the pitch, and obviously it’s been working because we got better results.”

After those heavy early defeats, the Lionesses improved markedly after Christmas. Having not won all season,

was on the wing, then I played centermid, then holding and then number 10.

So to then go to striker was enjoyable because that is where I want to play.

When Chris gave me the opportunity, I wanted to make the most of it.

“I feel like I could have done a bit more but I'm happy with my goals, especially the two against London Bees because they’re my old team.”

With an average age of 18, the Lionesses squad was by far the youngest in the league and at times the gulf in maturity and experience has been evident in games this season.

At her age and having gained experience in the Bees’ first team, Clarke is naturally regarded as a senior player in this Millwall side.

“Obviously I’m quite young, being only 21, but in this team I am considered a senior player,” she said.

“I have been captain before in other teams, I’m used to being a leader. I told the girls that we needed to learn the basics. At the start of the season we didn’t do simple things, like calling ‘man on’, for example, and we made the game so much harder for each other.

“As a senior player, if the girls were having a bad session and their confidence was down, I would pull them up and tell them that it is only one session and encourage them to improve in the next one.”

Clarke’s debut season in a Millwall shirt has helped her evolve and mature as a player. In a team that has struggled for much of the season, she has become a fan favourite and was voted runner-up for Player of the Year. The striker is optimistic about the side’s future and her hunger to improve means that she already has her sights on next season in the Championship.

“Personally, I think I should score more goals. I have scored seven this season and I don’t think that is good enough. Next season,Jacob minimum I want Koutouan is double figures. As a team, we need to win more games and finish as high as we can in the league.

“We should aim high. We are going to work really hard in pre-season, to try and compete to be in that top half of the table. Hopefully we can bring our recent form into next season and take it as a strength moving forward.”

they defeated Lewes 1-0 in the FA Cup and followed it up with a 3-1 Championship victory against London Bees, with a brace from Clarke.

Clarke felt the performances in the first half of the season were not a huge surprise considering the position the club was in at the end of last season.

After financial difficulties, the Lionesses went through an overhaul, both on and off the pitch, with 22 new players, a new director of football in Pedro Martinez Losa and manager in

Chris Phillips recruited.

Clarke was one of those 22 players to arrive at the club and having worked with Phillips during her time at Arsenal she insisted that, despite results, he is still the right man for the job.

“I was with Chris at Arsenal for like four years, so we have a quite a good relationship,” she said. “This season he has been implementing his values on the club, and it has been tough because he has only had the season. Going forward he is just going to make us

even better, it's only a matter of time when we start getting the results.

“We were put together so late in preseason, so we didn’t have enough time to gel together and get to know how each other plays. Socially as well, before Christmas we had bonding sessions to try and catch up and I think that just did us wonders.”

Clarke’s experiences earlier in the season reflected how the Lionesses were trying to find their feet.

She explained: “Starting the season, I

Unfortunately for the Menace, their form deserted them for the vast majority of their game, as they failed to test the home goalkeeper with anything of note.

It was a scrappy first half hour, with neither team able to take control of the game.

However, a moment of quality led to Fleetdown taking the lead in the 31st minute when Joby Smith picked

the ball up, took a touch and bent a shot around the despairing Tommy Hobson in the Peckham goal.

Peckham had a chance to equalise before half-time through Nicky Meta, but he shot wide.

Sadly for Town, the second half was more of the same. A resolute Fleetdown frustrated Peckham’s attempts to find an equaliser, and they could have extended their lead midway through the half.

A change to three at the back provided some renewed impetus for Town in the last fifteen minutes, but apart from a header by Ali Amisu that went and a shot from Herve

Mbongue that failed to find the target they didn’t really trouble the home side.

It was all the more frustrating for Peckham as the goals continued to flow at Tudor Sports, where Borden Village eventually lost 5-0.

Peckham head coach Mary Phillip was philosophical after the final whistle. She said: “Things don't always go your way in football, there are always good and bad times.

“The game was ours for the taking, but unfortunately not all the players rose to the challenge.”

uring the Easter half term, on Monday 8th April 2019 saw 700 young people representing 65 professional football clubs from across the country come together to compete in the football festival that was the Premier League Kicks Cup 2019.

This year competition took part in the University of Warwick’s sport facilities. For all the young people selected to represent Millwall it was a first ever visit to Warwick which is a town on the River Avon, in England’s West Midlands region. The Kicks Cup historically has provided young people with a fantastic opportunity of leaving their zones in London to meet and compete against a variety of different young people from up and down the country.

Premier League Kicks is flagship community programme which started in 2006 and uses the power of football and sport to inspire young people in some of the most high-need areas in England and Wales. By engaging youngsters in constructive activities, including a wide variety of sports, coaching, music and educational and personal development sessions, communities up and down the country have been transformed with impressive sports participation rates and the authorities reporting significant reductions in anti-social behaviour in the areas in which it is delivered. The scheme has also enabled thousands of youngsters to find routes into education, training and employment with volunteering being a key component.

The Millwall Premier League Kicks programme provides free weekly football sessions for young people from the ages of 8 to 19 at selected venues within the London boroughs of Southwark and Lewisham and is locally supported by Youth First and Southwark Youth & Play and partners such as Active Communities Network. There are currently 15 different weekly football sessions throughout the two boroughs that run for 48 weeks each year.

Each club that took part in the Premier League Kicks Cup selected 8 young people for a mixed tournament and 8 young people for the girl’s tournament with all young people aged 15 and 16. The Millwall team was selected based upon a variety of aspects such as their attendance, punctuality, behaviour whilst in attendance as well as their individual footballing ability.

Kicks Cup in Liverpool. Three of those players have gone on to have trials with Football League clubs, with Josh Koroma breaking into Leyton Orients first team in 2016 and has since made 93 first team appearances for the club.

Diallang Jaiyesimi has since signed two professional contracts with Norwich City and joined Grimsby on loan for the 2017/18 season making 29 first team appearances and had joined Yeovil Town for the 2018/19 season prior to an ACL injury ending his season. The last of the three Deshane Dalling who signed professional terms with Huddersfield at the start of 2017 before joining QPR at the start of 2018 as a member of the under 23’s squad.

Another Millwall player developing into professional football was the class of 2017, which had Kicks participant Abraham Odoh who at the start of the 2018/19 season had joined Tooting & Mitcham u23’s and impressed so much he was drafted into the first team. Before the January 2019 transfer window closed, Odoh signed for Charlton Athletic until the end of the season on loan, linking up with their u23’s team managed by ex-professional footballer Jason Euell.

The young people for this year’s

squad were escorted to Warwick by three of their Millwall Premier League Kicks coaches from Millwall Community Trust. They travelled by mini bus and stayed the night in Warwick Conferences University Accommodation. After settling in and resting the group were then treated to a team bonding meal at Nandos before retiring to bed for the night in preparation for the following morning football festival.

For the 2019 Kicks Cup Millwall found themselves placed in Group D alongside Fleetwood Town, Coventry City, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Burnley, Plymouth Argyle, Charlton Athletic and Leyton Orient. The young Lions first game was a competitive London derby against Charlton which saw the Lions take derby pride in a 1-0 win after a moment of individual brilliance from Obi Nebuwa which see him wriggle past three players and slot the ball calmly past the Charlton goalkeeper.

The Lions next two matches saw them take on Plymouth and Coventry with both games also finishing 1-0 in Millwall’s favour, which recorded three wins out of the first three for Millwall.

The Lions impressive run continued with the 2-0 victories against Fleetwood and Wolves

before lunch commenced for all the young people. The remaining two group matches post lunch saw the young lions held to a stalemate against Burnley before an individual error against Leyton Orient in another derby saw them lose 1-0 to their London rivals.

Having won five, drawn one lost one and conceded one the lions thought they had done enough to finish in the top two of their group and in turn qualify for the quarter finals. However, having only scored 7 and finished tied on points with Charlton who also finished on 16 points the young lions crashed out in the group stages.

Millwall’s Kicks community development officer Gary Otim spoke highly of the yearly tournament saying “The Kicks Cup is an event which is eagerly anticipated every year. It provides a great opportunity for our young people to demonstrate their abilities at a big showcase like the Kicks Cup and brings together young people from many different backgrounds, beliefs and areas.

We will never downplay the importance of the opportunity of competition and allowing young people to showcase their skills.

However, we also value he life lessons and experiences afforded to our young people through such

a big occasion. The power of football should not be understated. We are already looking forward to next year’s tournament”.

Millwall Premier League Kicks participant Edward Olanyi who was selected to represent Millwall at the Premier League Kicks Cup 2019 commented: “Being selected for the Kicks Cup was great. We got picked out of loads of other people and got to travel out of London and stayed overnight. We felt like footballers.

Putting on the Millwall kit and representing the club felt good too. We played quite well and only lost one game, so we were surprised to not make it through to the quarter finals but that’s football. We wouldn’t have had such an opportunity if we didn’t come to Millwall Kicks.”

Millwall Community Trust will continue provide a wide range of weekly football sessions across the London boroughs of Southwark and Lewisham under the Premier League Kicks programme.

MILLWALL GLADLY said goodbye to this season, fittingly after a one-goal defeat.

The Lions’ last nine defeats away from home in the league have all been by one goal. So near and yet so far.

Encouragement yet concern that they’re on the wrong side by the slimmest of margins so often.

Neil Harris mentioned that statistic in his post-match interview. It signifies that this side never gave up in games this season, they stuck in there and always had a chance to nick something. They just lacked that little bit of added quality.

They didn’t really have it on the bench.

Steve Morison was a year older, Tom Elliott’s time at the club is in doubt after his lack of goals. Jiri Skalak never grasped his opportunity.

Ben Marshall didn’t have the same effect as he had a year ago and won’t be a Millwall player next season.

Millwall failed to score in fourteen of their league games, and in three of the last four, as they ended the campaign without a win in seven. They were fortunate that they were in a battle for survival with Rotherham, who rarely looked like they had the ability to put a decent run together.

Tom Bradshaw’s injury that ended his season didn’t help, but he hadn’t scored in ten games in his Lions career, though he really only saw little snippets of action. He had his last pre-season at Barnsley where he started the campaign.

He will be back for Millwall’s preparations when they start in June, likely to include a week in Portugal. That will benefit him.

He is a different type of player to Lee Gregory. Bradshaw likes to get in behind defences and be a finisher. In his last few months as a Millwall player Gregory did everything: run the channels, hold up play to bring team-mates into it, challenge in the air and set up chances.

He would have liked a few more goals, and didn’t score in a win in the league since last October.

But he gave a lot to the side, even more after being asked to play as a lone striker after Christmas. Gregory will take some replacing, but it’s a chance for Harris to reshape his attack.

There was a real sense of a changing of the guard, and certainly excitement among Millwall fans at the DW Stadium, when Harris made his first change in the 67th minute. It was an opportunity for Gregory to be appreciated by those Lions supporters, who then trained their eyes to the sideline to see who was coming on.

George Alexander was thirteen years old when Gregory signed for Millwall, and he went on to partner Morison, who is almost twice his age. Alexander, son on Gary, had enjoyed an excellent season with the under-18s and under-23s. He was a key creative figure in a deep attacking role when Millwall met Tottenham in the FA Youth Cup this season, when the young Lions almost knocked them out before losing in extratime.

League participants, Billy Mitchell scored arguably Millwall’s goal of the season across any level, driving forward from midfield to lash into the top corner from 30 yards.

Mitchell, 18, was introduced on Sunday with twelve minutes left and almost immediately made an impact, flooring Antonee Robinson with a tackle that delighted the away end.

Harris was pleased to be able to give

the duo their debuts, but warned them there is much work ahead. “The Championship is such a difficult level to blood young players in. Those boys haven’t earned the right to be in the squad next season, they’ll have to earn the right at the start of next season.

“I thought it was more fitting today to give them an opportunity than to give players an opportunity that won’t be here next year. I think that’s the clear message

and I think everyone will understand that.

“It was very pleasing to give two Millwall boys their debuts and I hope this is the start for them and they keep progressing.”

The result here was immaterial, so the ideal place to introduce new players.

There is another warning for the pair from almost exactly four years ago, on the final day at Wolves. Millwall also lost that game, 4-2, when Harris gave debuts to teenagers Jamie Philpot and Alfie Pavey. Philpot scored with his first touch but was then injured, giving Pavey his chance off the bench. There were high hopes for the strikers, but for one reason or another it didn’t happen for them and they’re currently trying to forge professional careers by rebuilding in non-league football.

Monday morning. He wants to sign Alex Pearce on a permanent deal from Derby County. David Martin, after such an important impact in the latter part of the season, is close to agreeing a new deal, which will be for twelve months.

There will be lots of departures, though some of them might not happen until later in the summer. Players have been told they can leave, but it won’t automatically happen on June 1, when the transfer window opens. Players need to get the right contracts and will sit and wait until it happens. Some could even still be with the club after August’s deadline if they can’t find anything better.

That’s just one of the many challenges for Harris this summer. In his first transfer window he signed former teammates Morison and Tony Craig, players he could fully trust. There has been a

NEIL HARRIS lavished praise on Lee Gregory after the striker’s final appearance for Millwall last weekend.

Millwall need to eke out every possible advantage in recruitment, given they will again have one of the smallest budgets in the division. Harris hinted he may look abroad for players, which would represent a widening of the club’s scope in looking for players.

it’s just a matter of finding them. The problem is plenty of other Championship clubs will be busily searching for these nuggets, too, and a lot of them can offer better financial packages than Millwall.

Likely Millwall will be looking again to pick up players like Murray Wallace, who was progressing so well before injury ended his campaign in March.

Harris will attend play-off games across the division to identify targets.

Unfortunately Millwall couldn’t go into the summer with a little bounce a win would have given them. Joe Garner scored the only goal after David Martin had saved Nick Powell’s shot.

Jake Cooper saw an effort cleared off the line and then Ryan Tunnicliffe missed a glorious chance just after the break.

Despite that, there was plenty of positive vibes with those two debuts, and

Lions fans chanted Gregory’s name when he went over to acknowledge them at the end.

He needs to be replaced, but that’s just one block as the Millwall house is torn down and rebuilt again ahead of next season.

Gregory played for 67 minutes at Wigan before he was replaced with George Alexander.

Stoke City are reportedly close to a deal for the 30-year-old Sheffieldborn former Halifax forward.

“I can only thank him for his efforts while I’ve been in charge.

Not just his goal-scoring record, but his quality as a person,” Harris said.

“He is hugely, hugely popular in the changing room, massively popular with the staff because of his honesty, his trust, his performances and his work ethic.

“And he’s a fan favourite as well.

“We’re going to miss him immensely at the club. He goes with complete blessing from me to the future playing for a club further up north. He’ll be a great signing for somebody."

Gregory joined Millwall from Halifax for around a quarter of a million pounds in the summer of 2014.

He made 238 Millwall appearances, scoring 77 times. He’s eleventh on the all-time Lions list of league scorers with 64 goals.

Gregory was the top league goal

scorer in each of his five seasons with the club.

Stoke are being linked with a move for the free agent.

Harris continued: “When I took over I changed to 4-4-2 because I thought Lee Gregory was going to be my best player. I changed to 4-42 because I thought it got the best out of him. It did and it has.

“It was always chucked at him that he couldn’t play in a 4-3-3 as a lone striker. Well, in the last three months we’ve played a 4-3-3 the majority of the time and he’s been one of the best strikers in the division.

“That shows his development as a player and a character.

“I’ve known for a period of time that he’s leaving, and so has he, but he’s been faultless in his performances. It shows why I’ve picked him, when I’ve left other players out of the squad recently.

“People have said why is the manager not playing him, why is he not picking him. Well I’ve left them out because they don’t want to be here or they don’t deserve to be here.

“Lee Gregory’s not going to be here – and I’ve 100 per cent known that for a period – but I’ve picked him every game because his professionalism and his attitude and everything that goes with it has been first-class.”

Striker pleased Lions achieved season’s objective

LEE GREGORY has thanked Neil Harris for standing by him “through thick and thin” – and believes the future is bright for the Lions.

Gregory will depart this summer when his contract runs out after five seasons with the club.

He was top scorer in all competitions in four of those seasons – either side of Steve Morison in 2016-17 – and was offered a lucrative new deal by the club earlier in the season.

But Gregory was keen to move back up north. He is Sheffield-born and has a young family. At 30, he probably has just one more chance of a big move, and a big signing-on fee, to set himself up for life after football.

Gregory was given a rapturous sendoff by Lions fans at the DW Stadium when he was substituted for George Alexander. Reaction from Millwall fans online has also been positive as they recognise what he gave to the club with his attitude, work ethic and goals.

He shouldered the majority of the attacking burden this season with Steve Morison used less often, Tom Elliott struggling with form and injury and Tom Bradshaw out since November.

Gregory showed his ability as a lone striker in the latter half of the campaign, developing a promising

combination with Ben Thompson, who supported the attacker from an advanced midfield role.

Gregory then renewed his partnership with Morison in Millwall’s last game at The Den this season against Bristol City. The pair, so crucial in Millwall’s play-off challenges in the three previous seasons, linked up when Morison headed on Jake Cooper’s ball and Gregory got his thirteenth goal of the campaign.

It was Gregory’s flicked header from Shaun Williams’ cross that gave Morison the chance to prod home Millwall’s winning goal in the 2017 League One play-off final against

Bradford City.

Gregory was asked after last Sunday’s game for the highlights from his Millwall career.

“There’s loads, I don’t think I’ve got enough time,” he replied. “The highest point of my career was winning at Wembley. That was one of the best days in my career and it will stay with me forever.

“Millwall’s been a massive part of my career, it’s been great. The highs when they did come along have been that good that they [exceeded] the lows.”

Harris took over on a caretaker basis from Holloway in March the following year, and Gregory scored a hat-trick in a 3-3 draw against Derby four days before Harris was named permanent manager.

“I like to think [I’ve progressed] quite far,” Gregory continued. “Credit goes to the staff at Millwall. Since Neil’s come in he’s been great with me.

“He stuck by me through thick and thin, he’s been class. Whatever happens in the summer I’m just Millwall were through to Wembley.

Gregory believes the club’s supporters should be positive about the players coming through.

“The young lads coming in, Billy and George, they’re two great players coming in so it’s looking good for Millwall,” Gregory said.

“It’s exciting for the fans.”

Millwall lost to Joe Garner’s goal last weekend, but Gregory was pleased that they achieved safety this season.

“Obviously there was nothing to play for, it was unfortunately just a goingthrough-the-motions game.

“But we achieved what we wanted to this season, however it’s come. The aim was to stay up and we’ve done that so we’re very happy.

“We worked hard. It was never going to be as easy – well, it wasn’t easy – but it was never going to be as good as last season. We knew it was going to be hard. The guys just knuckled down and we got there in the end.

“It’s pleasing to know this summer that Millwall’s got another season in the Championship.”

IT’S GOING to be a summer of change at Millwall.

After safety was achieved, Neil Harris lifted the lid on the problems with some squad members this season, though he didn’t name names.

“From the 18s to the 23s I found it tough. I started scoring later on for the 23s towards the back end of the season.

I’d started off with the 18s flying.

“From January on I was with the 23s

and training with the first team a few days a week. It’s been all positives since the 18s and now I’ve made my Champ debut.

“Signing a pro contract was a big achievement as well as my Champ debut. Hopefully next season I’ll be around the first team, but obviously having to work hard with the 23s.”

Alexander’s father, Gary, played for Millwall between 2007 and 2010.

Alexander junior added: "My whole family are buzzing for me to be in the first team. They are all Millwall supporters. I've been coming since I was seven when I signed for the club. I was going to home and away games, it was brilliant."

Harris warns changes won’t happen overnight

NEIL HARRIS insisted the message was “loud and clear” – a lot is going to change at Millwall this summer.

Harris said “the gloves are off” after the last game of the season at Wigan last weekend, and that he has had honest conversations with players over their futures.

There are decisions to be made over a number of others, while the recruitment department compiles a list of targets.

Harris said last week the club needs to invest this summer after a 21st-place finish in the Championship.

“It’s not just about spending money, it’s about understanding that I need to move players on and I need to bring players in,” Harris said.

“The chairman’s been hugely supportive of my time in charge and supportive of managers prior to me, so that’s not going to

change.

“The message I put out loud and clear [last week] was a message to the fan base, really, to say, I’m not stupid, I know it needs to change. I know how it needs to change. Just because I hadn’t come out and said it doesn’t mean I didn’t know it.

“But I’ve supported my players at a critical time to make sure they had every confidence going into games.

“The gloves are off now. That’s going to change, and I’ve told the players, individually. What they do know is that I speak big words in here [press conferences], and honesty in here, but I’ll also tell them to their face.

“Players will move on, but it won’t happen overnight for some of them. Some might have to go through the transfer window and wait until August.

“If not, then the desire is if they’re here they’re here – but we’re going to bring in better players.”
