A

S THE football season kicks off we plan to bring you more, not just from The Den but also from our local non-league sides, especially Dulwich Hamlet.

The Southwark News is and will always be a Millwall paper and on top of the coverage in print, we run the NewsAtDen website, bringing you unrivalled online coverage on a daily basis.

This week we launched our new Rabble Rouser column, with a young reporter, Ben Henderson from Dulwich, dedicating his Saturdays and some midweeks to following the Hamlet home and away as they embark on a new journey in the sixth tier of English football.

Despite the ongoing disputes with their landlords, the club has gone from strength to strength both on the pitch and within the local community, regularly drawing in crowds approaching and often exceeding 2,000. While many non-league clubs are struggling to attract gates as the world of the multi-million Premier League dominates the game, this historic club which is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year - has made a name for itself with its progressive campaigns and it continues to grow despite the off-field problems.

Meanwhile, last week, Fisher boss Dean Harrison asked local people in Rotherhithe and surrounding areas to support his non-league side as it struggles in its new ground in St Paul's to get anything like the attendance numbers it did in the heydays of the 1980s when it was in the Conference.

Given the continuing levels of violence among our young people, it is even more important to highlight the good work being done by community clubs and the opportunities that are available to watch and take part in sport across Southwark.

A PECKHAM GROUP has submitted its application to the Home Office to welcome a refugee family into the community.

Peckham Sponsors Refugees (PSR) has been supported by around 100 locals and has worked since January to prepare for the arrival of the family, who are fleeing conflict and devastation in Syria.

They have raised over £16,000 and had to ensure they had enough to pay for at least two years’ rent.

The group will meet with a Home Office representative in the next few weeks to seek pre-approval. The family is expected to arrive in the community early in 2019.

Tim Finch, a local resident and founding director of Sponsor Refugees, said the application is “the most thorough and comprehensive” that he has seen.

Despite facing challenges finding suitable accommodation, the group has managed to source a six bedroom home, which could house two small families or one large family. They have also raised funds to help support the refugees when they arrive, by hosting a charity quiz, picnic and a cinema night.

In order to aid the family’s assimilation, the group has drawn up a safeguarding and resettlement plan for the family as well as sourcing an Arabic translator and researching educational and support services for their arrival.

Over the next few months, the Home Office will complete final checks to ensure the community is ready to house the family. The family will be chosen by The Home Office from a refugee camp in Jordan or Lebanon, out of those that have applied to the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) to be resettled to another country.

matter of months before we’ll be welcoming a Syrian family to the neighbourhood.

“The community has really come together – fundraising, writing applications and finding a house – to do what it can to provide a new home for a family caught up in a desperate situation.

“The people of Syria have endured more than six years of destruction and violence on a terrifying scale. Millions have fled to escape the horrors.

“In the UK, we should be doing all we can to open our doors to the Syrian

families who have been forced from their homes. Peckham can be proud of its efforts to make our country a more welcoming place.

“PSR has done wonderful work and I am glad to have met so many fantastic people living in Peckham. Community sponsorship can really make a great

difference in the refugees’ lives, but can also have an invaluable effect on the local community”.

Some members of the Peckham sponsorship group have teamed up to form a befriending network to provide practical support for the family, from setting up a bank account to help with

finding school places for children.

As the News went to press Peckham Sponsors Refugees has raised £16,076.37 out of their £20,000 target and the fundraising team will continue to host events over the next few months to raise money to support the family.

BUSINESS OF ‘BOXING LEGENDS PRICED OUT’

A BERMONDSEY business, which has catered for wellknown boxers including Frank Bruno, could be forced out of the area after more than 40 years.

Munich 72 Sports was first opened in Southwark Park Road in 1975 by former amateur boxer Richard Atkins, who also owned popular boxing label Title at the time.

Atkins named the shop as a mark of respect for two of his friends who represented Great Britain in the Munich 72 Olympics.

It was run as a traditional sports shop with a trophy and engraving section upstairs, and supplied the kit for professional boxers such as Bruno and Lloyd Honeyghan.

During its heyday a second shop was opened in Dartford in the late 70s, and people would flock to the store in Bermondsey to have their photo taken with famous faces.

Speaking to the News, Marc Crowcher, 56, who now runs the business, said: “The Title Boxing was really what brought people in.

“Frank Bruno used to come into the shop to buy his shorts for his fights.

“The boxers would come in, we would measure them up and they would have these wild nicknames on their shorts that we had to get perfectly right.

“They would train at the Thomas A Becket pub on Old Kent Road and we would supply their kit.

“Those were good times, meeting all those guys – everyone wanted to come in and have their photo taken.”

The store in Dartford closed in the early 80s and the business became known as

In 1994 the sports section closed down suddenly and the business moved to a different premises on Southwark Park Road.

“I think those massive stores like JD Sports opened and it was difficult for a small shop to operate,” said Marc, who has worked for Munich 72 in some capacity for 40 years.

“We just couldn’t compete anymore; we would be buying stuff in probably for more expense than JD and they were buying it in such massive volumes.”

While once upon a time Marc could have made a business solely out of trophies and engravings for dart and pool leagues, 50 per cent of what he does now is merchandise for customers such as football clubs.

The businessman is now looking for a new home in Bermondsey after being served notice on his lease in Bombay Street, where he moved the shop to sixteen years ago, but he fears he might be forced out of the area as rents are “sky high”.

“The business is doing really well, it’s really strong but you just don’t know how moving is going to have an impact and we’re talking mortgages and livelihoods,” he said.

“I think we could narrow down the operation and put it partly in the Biscuit Factory in a smaller office or studio and have some of the work done in a workshop elsewhere. We moved 50 yards from above what’s now the Nisa on Southwark Park Road round to Bombay Street and we had a big sign saying we had moved but people still thought we had closed down so it is a concern.”

Council apologises over ‘drafting error’ in document on fire safety for tower blocks

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL is seeking to reassure residents living in high rise tower blocks that a rolling programme of ‘above-andbeyond’ fire risk assessments are being conducted, after incorrect papers errors caused confusion.

In the aftermath of last May’s Grenfell fire disaster, Southwark Council committed to conducting the ‘gold standard’ type of fire risk assessment the highest level – on all 174 of its residential tower blocks, on top of an already in place programme of regular fire safety assessments.

Type 4 assessments involve comprehensively looking at individual flats as well as communal areas, and are more thorough than the statutory work the council is legally required to conduct.

Cabinet papers said: “Notwithstanding the substantial investment in fire safety that has already been made since 2009, the council has re-doubled its efforts in the aftermath of the Grenfell Tower tragedy and has undertaken intrusive type 4 fire risk assessments of all 174 high rise blocks and investigated cladding panels on all blocks that were potentially at risk.”

But after a Freedom of Information Request from the Ledbury Action Group the council admitted only eight of these ‘most comprehensive’ had taken place since Grenfell – with none ever done beforehand.

The council has since apologised for incorrectly stating that all type 4 assessments had been completed, saying the report included a genuine typing error.

Councillor Stephanie Cryan, cabinet member for housing management and modernisation, said: “As stated in our FOI response, our fire risk assessment programme goes above and beyond requirements.

“The wording used in the capital monitoring report included a drafting error and should have read ‘is undertaking’ rather than ‘has undertaken’. I apologise if this was confusing.

“All the council’s housing has live, up to date fire risk assessments in place, and a rolling programme of updating them continues.

“Furthermore, we have committed to carry out type 4 FRAs – the highest level of intrusive fire risk assessment on all 174 tower blocks, and over time on all our blocks. However, this work does and will take time.

“We include fire risk work as part of

major works programme in order to cause the least disruption and expense as possible to tenants and leaseholders.

“The extra type 4 FRA work, which is not a statutory requirement and which needs to be ongoing as a live project, has already begun.”

The type 4 risk assessments will continue to take place on a case by case basis with some postponed to coincide with planed major works.

Long-term, the council intends to conduct the type 4 assessments across all its low rise housing, too.

In the meantime, usual fire safety work continues as normal, with residents able to read the assessments for their own blocks online, or by contacting the council.

But Danielle Gregory, from the Ledbury Action Group, was nonplussed by the explanation, telling the News: “I find it difficult to digest their response that this is due to an administration error.

“The information is being presented as factual to the cabinet and councillors and these sorts of mistakes are very serious indeed.

“I think Southwark now have a responsibility to formally correct the document and to make it publicly clear that they are still working through these intensive fire risk assessments.”

Police believe the occupants of this car may hold clues to SJ murder BERMONDSEY

DETECTIVES INVESTIGATING the killing of Joshua Boadu are searching for the occupants of a car they believe was involved in a run-in with the murder suspects shortly before the 23-year-old was stabbed.

Joshua, known affectionately as SJ, was stabbed outside Helen Taylor House in Linsey Street, Bermondsey, in a broad daylight attack on June 11.

He was put on life support at King’s College Hospital where his family kept a vigil at his bedside for eleven days, but he sadly passed away after his heart stopped beating.

A post-mortem examination which took place at Greenwich mortuary on June 26 gave the preliminary cause of Joshua’s death as a stab wound to the chest.

Police say the apprentice engineer was involved in an altercation with three or four young black males, who had driven a metallic blue Peugeot SUV, before he was stabbed.

They now believe that those same males had a separate altercation at about 5.55pm – about 20 minutes before the attack on Joshua – with the occupants of a silver five-door Volkswagen Golf in Raymouth Road.

Detective Inspector Ian Titterell, who is leading the investigation into Joshua’s murder, previously told the News the suspects were believed to be four black men, one of a lighter complexion, about 20 years of age.

Speaking to the News on Monday, he said: “Despite the widespread publicity concerning this tragic death we are still struggling to turn intelligence into evidence.

“I would urge anybody with information about the murder of SJ to contact us.

“SJ’s family and friends are desperate for answers.

Latest victim of knife crime in Southwark CAMBERWELL

A MAN has been charged with the murder of 23-year-old Sidique Kamara, who was stabbed to death in Camberwell.

Kenneth Umezie, 31, also from Camberwell, was charged with murder on Tuesday.

He was due to appear in custody at Bromley Magistrates' Court yesterday, Wednesday, as the News went to press.

Sidique died after being found with stab injuries along with two other males in Warham Street at about 7.21pm on August 1.

London Ambulance Service and London's Air Ambulance attended along with police officers, but Sidique sadly died at the scene despite the best efforts of medical staff.

A post-mortem examination took place on Friday, August 3, at Greenwich Mortuary and gave the cause of death as two stab wounds to the chest.

eighteen and nineteen, were arrested as part of the inquiry, but have since been released under investigation.

Detectives from the Met's Homicide and Major Crime Command are leading the investigation and are appealing for witnesses and information.

Joshua was the third child to Ghanaian parents Frank, 62, and Pat, 47, and had two older brothers, Jeffrey, 28, and Jerry, 25, and a younger sister, Joanna, 22, with whom he was extremely close.

He and his family previously lived in Peckham but decided to move to Bermondsey after the 23-year-old was stabbed in an unprovoked attack as a youngster.

Joshua’s brother Jeffrey said the best way to describe him was “easy going”.

“I think young people need to think about the long-term effects of using a knife and consider if it’s worth it to destroy someone’s family and destroy your own family as well,” he told the News after Joshua died.

“Nothing good can come out of using a knife.”

Missiles and punches thrown at police at 'unofficial memorial'

THE FAMILY of a murdered Southwark teenager have appealed for help to find justice and stop what they called a 'wall of silence'.

Latwaan Griffiths, 18, was found with knife wounds in Camberwell at about 6.55pm on Wednesday, July 25.

Detectives have released an image of a moped rider (pictured right), who dumped Latwaan on Denmark Road, in the hope a member of the public may be able to identify them.

Police believe he was killed in Loughbourough Junction and have identified the area around Elmore House and Minet Road'.

In a statement released by police, the family said: “The wall of silence continues to be reinforced in our communities, “Latwaan Griffiths, our loved one was stabbed to his death in the early evening of July 25, 2018, in circumstances that are yet to be known.

“We know that you know something that can help us put the pieces together.”

Latwaan's murder, until last weekt, was the latest death in Southwark, as knife crime reaches epidemic proportions across London.

In Camberwell, on Warham Street at about 7.21pm on Wednesday August 1, just streets away from where Latwaan was dumped just over two weeks ago, there was a triple stabbing.

One of the victims, 23-year-old Sidique Kamara has died and two others were taken to a south London hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A 31-year-old man has since been charged with the murder.

Just under two week's before Latwaan's murder on July 12, seventeen-year-old Katrina Makunova was stabbed to death in Brisbane Street, Camberwell. A 21-year-old man was arrested, charged with manslaughter and remains in custody.

In their statement Latwaan’s family said they wanted peace, adding that until people come forward “there is nothing stopping you from being the

THE NEWS understands that the two main warring gangs in Southwark are known as Moscow 17, dubbed The Russians, based on the Brandon and Crawford Estates in Walworth and Camberwell, and Zone Two, from Peckham.

According to well-placed sources, the dispute between the two only started relatively recently, and has escalated into a tit-for-tat conflict where they take turns to drive into each other’s postcodes, challenging their rivals.

From Brixton south to Croydon, there is a complex postcode map with dozens of gangs with ever-shifting alliances and battles across south London.

Many are drill groups – who rap in a style developed in Chicago and influenced by UK Grime – and some had previously blasted claims they are involved in criminality.

But many have self-proclaimed members behind bars – with some still uploading music with threatening lyrics from their cells.

Youngsters are ‘at risk of PTSD’

STABBINGS AND shootings in Camberwell are putting young people at risk of serious mental trauma, says the chair of Camberwell Green’s safer neighbourhood ward panel, Mark Webb.

Mr Webb, who takes part in weapons sweeps across Camberwell to rid estates of knives and other dangerous items, told the News: “People did not understand the world that the gangs are living in and that gang members are at very high risk of becoming severely mentally ill and will begin to show signs of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

“Carrying weapons, running and being chased by people, exposure to people being wounded and dying, constantly being hyper-alert for possible armed conflict - these are exactly the things that give soldiers PTSD. But, troops and front line military personnel have professional help and support and they generally recover from it.

“These young people aren't getting that help. They are just drowning out the worst aspects of PTSD with the misuse of drink and drugs.”

A police spokesperson has said that around 300 youngsters turned up to the event that officers were called to at Pasley Park at about 8pm on Saturday, July 28.

Police say although the family did not know about it, the event appears to have been organised in memory of eighteen-year-old Latwaan Officers were called to the Kennington area after reports of an unlicensed music event and although the DJ's as well as the organisers cooperated, 'a minority of the crowd' did not follow suit.

Missiles were thrown at officers and the police have confirmed that one officer was punched in the head.

Police helicopters were circling overhead and spotted a male in the crowd armed with a ‘zombie’-style knife that was later recovered from the park during a weapons sweep after the event was shut down at 11pm.

Police formally declared the event as a rave at 10pm and officers stopped anyone else from getting inside the park to take part.

"I was just perplexed, I have lived there for sixteen years, I have never seen such a sustained action." said Sigrun Davidsdottir, a Kennington Park Road resident.

"It is not everyday that you have police helicopters circulating over a residential area for such a long time."

No arrests were made and no injuries were reported, although enquiries continue.

Helping the estates affected by crime

ELENA NOEL, Co-Chair of the Southwark Anti-Knife Crime Forum, told the News an emergency meeting had been held on the Brandon Estate last Wednesday by residents who feel angry not enough is being done to address the root causes of the recent wave of violence.

She said: “The community is in shock from these violent incidents and parents are terrified to let their children out of their homes.

“Since Rhyhiem Barton was shot, the forum members have been supporting residents on the Brandon and elsewhere and helping to find solutions to the root causes of violent crime – poverty and social disadvantage.

“Children from the estate have been taken on day trips away, such as swimming, by the Charity iiChild which has been very proactive in reassuring the community.

“A parents group to support parents on the estate will also be set up by the charity too.”

Ms Noel says she has been contact with residents about reported noise nuisance , antisocial behaviour and concerns about

crime and ‘lawlessness’ on the estate.

“To help, we are setting up a new initiative to help youths on Southwark estates get into employment, training and apprenticeships, and in the last week the Home Office has announced it will be funding the charity Growing Against Violence, one of our members, in its intervention work with youths at risk of knife crime or serious violence across Southwark,” she said.

Fatal heart problems detected earlier

HEART ABNORMALITIES can now be diagnosed in babies as early as 12 weeks into a pregnancy, instead of at the 20-week scan, thanks to high resolution scanners at Evelina London.

The three new scanners, called SMI (Superb Microvascular Imaging) Toshiba i800 ultrasound systems, are providing higher quality and more detailed images than ever before.

They give experts a clear view of an unborn baby’s heart and blood vessels and detect the movement of blood within the heart.

Rachel Slaughter, 38, has the rare congenital heart defect, Ebstein’s anomaly, and had a hole in her heart.

She was diagnosed when pregnant with her first child, Erin, now three.

Rachel underwent open-heart surgery 10 months after Erin was born and was told that she would need scans during any future pregnancies to see if the baby had inherited her condition. She discovered she was pregnant again in December 2017 and was scanned with the new equipment.

She said: “It was a huge relief to hear that the baby’s heart looked normal at

15 weeks. I had been feeling anxious so it was great that I could have early reassurance and remove that worry so I could enjoy the pregnancy. The sonographer couldn’t see anything of concern and I had further scans at 20 and 30 weeks which confirmed that

the baby’s heart is working well.”

John Simpson, professor of paediatric and fetal cardiology at Evelina London, said: “Earlier diagnosis gives us much more time to plan care, to prepare parents for what is ahead and provide them with specialist support.”

Fetal cardiology is the study of the unborn child’s heart and the teams at Evelina London and King’s College Hospital, work in partnership to carry out around 1,000 scans a year.

The combined team, which is part of King’s Health Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre, is the first in the UK to use this technique to detect heart problems early.

Women offered this type of scan include those who have had a baby with major heart problems before, women who have a family history of heart problems or those whose babies are found to have increased nuchal translucency at the routine 12week scan.

This is when unborn babies have a thickness at the back of their neck, which can suggest that they have a heart abnormality or a genetic condition.

Annual Public Meeting

A SERIES of films has been created by the Evelina London audiology team to support children and young people with hearing loss, and their families.

The three films have been specially created to prepare patients and their families for their appointments and to provide support to those with hearing loss.

The team at Evelina London audiology centre care for children with middle ear disorders and significant hearing loss, whilst also offering hearing tests to children of all ages.

One of the films, ‘What does my hearing loss mean for me?’, helps children and young people to find out how hearing loss affects older patients.

Sarah Adedeji, 17, who is a patient at the audiology centre and stars in the films says: “I hope that these videos increase awareness – giving the deaf community an opportunity to gain more recognition, let others know that they're not alone, and show deaf people that they can do anything.”

NEW COUNCIL homes were unveiled less than 300 metres from The Shard last week after success of community-led project.

The 27 new homes in West Bermondsey were celebrated due to the collaborative approach of their building.

Marklake Court was given planning permission three years ago and now will see households that were either overcrowded or underoccupying moving in to free up space elsewhere in Southwark.

Derelict site to gain more than 60 homes

TWO DERELICT industrial units on Pomeroy Street will be transformed into new homes by 2020.

The new site between Queen’s Road Peckham and New Cross will include more than 60 houses and flats and two floors of commercial units, and a minimum of 35 per cent of homes will be available for shared ownership and social rent.

Peabody Housing Association has appointed ENGIE to redevelop the site. It says construction is set to cost sixteen million and the building will include a solar panel roof and communal garden.

The association says it aims to give jobs to at least eight apprentices from the area

and has pledged that half of employees involved in the regeneration will be local.

Dick Mortimer, Peabody’s executive director for development, said: “Disused land like this across the capital is a really important resource and we want to help all London boroughs reactivate these sites and deliver new genuinely affordable homes.

“The homes at Pomeroy Street will have first-class energy efficiency and be complemented by new shops for local people.

“Our employment, training and community investment teams will also be involved as we move towards completion in 2020.

“We look forward to working with the London Borough of Lewisham and ENGIE to deliver this excellent scheme as soon as possible.”

‘Keyworkers’ could pay discounted rent in housing shake-up

DISCOUNT RENT for public sector workers, carers and victims of domestic abuse is being mooted by Southwark Council in an effort to tackle the on-going housing crisis.

As part of its commitment towards 35 per cent affordable housing, the council is suggesting a possible ‘intermediate’ and ‘keyworker’ housing scheme.

Intermediate rent is discounted at around half private market rent for people on incomes below £60,000, while people earning between £60,000 and £90,000 are eligible for a discount of at least 20 per cent.

It says developers who build for private rent are allowed to meet this figure using discount market rent, and so under this scheme, a new development would need to have twelve per cent of its homes at social rent, eighteen per cent at London Living Rent (calculated at a third of the average income) and five per cent would be for those in the £60k-£90k income bracket.

It has been suggested that ‘keyworkers’ – such as teachers, health and social workers, firefighters and police officers should be prioritised in this new housing, so they can live and work in central London.

The council has also identified foster carers, carers, people leaving the armed forces and people escaping domestic abuse as being other groups who could be given priority.

The council now wants to hear the views of people living in Southwark – and is specifically asking who should be prioritised for new housing.

After the consultation period, a report will be submitted to the council’s cabinet with a final plan.

Councillor Stephanie Cryan, cabinet member for housing management and modernisation, said: “With the current housing crisis in London it is important that there is a supply of housing, of all tenures, that is truly affordable for our residents who are on low and medium incomes.

“Key workers in Southwark are finding it especially hard to rent in Southwark due to the increasing prices in the private sector.

“I hope that by opening up the discussion, we will be one step closer to forming a clear strategy to affordable private housing provision.”

WORLD FIRST TIME-LAPSE GIGAPEXEL CAPTURES LONDON OVER 24-HOURS BERMONDSEY

DURING A period of 24 hours in February, London was photographed 6,240 times in order to make the most detailed panorama in the world.

Contact lens retailer Lenstore partnered with Nikon and the Canary Wharf Group to create 24 Hour London – the world’s first time-lapse Gigapixel panorama.

The VR production company hired for the project was Bermondsey-based Visualise, the most experienced VR company in Europe.

“Shooting Gigapixel photos is hard – we have been shooting them for the Olympics, the World Cup,” Henry Stuart, the project lead and a member of Visualise said.

“Each panorama is so large it needs specially built computers to process it.

“In this case, we had to build a special server system to network all of the work stations in our studio to the content, so that we could stitch five of the photos at a time. Lucky it was the winter as the heat generated was keeping our whole block warm!”

A Gigapixel, as defined by Wikipedia, is a composed of one billion pixels; a Gigapixel itself is square, with height and

width measuring both 32,768 pixels.

(For context, images included in the News articles online usually measure 900 x 504 pixels).

In the 24 Hour London images – measuring 7.3 Gigapixels, meaning 7.3 billion pixels – there is not one pixel of discrepancy.

This means from the first image to the last image, taken an entire day later, each pixel is in the same exact point.

The project used robotic motion control technology that is typically used to take quick and accurate sweeping shots in Hollywood productions.

This was the first time that technology was used for a time-lapse photo.

“It is used nearly exclusively for film production,” Stuart said. “However, we needed a head that was heavy enough to mitigate the wind shaking the camera, and accurate enough to allow us to stitch the images together in exactly the same way for all 24 images.

“Incredibly this worked – the 24th photo is stitched to the exact template that was made for the first. Even we were surprised by its accuracy!”

The panorama was taken from the roof of Canary Wharf’s Canada One Square in February 2018.

“Shooting it was hard: There was a team of two of us, taking shifts through

the day and night,” continued Stuart. “It was incredibly cold and windy.

“Each hour we made the trip to the corner of the roof, checked the light, adjusted our settings and set off the camera remotely – then rushed back inside to warm up again! We were in a building control room, sandwiched between all their electrics and air conditioning controls.”

The panorama was shot with a Nikon D850, which has a 45 megapixel sensor and a large dynamic range, so it could capture a wide range of light and dark, important in a 24 hour panorama.

The lens used was a Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/2.8, which shoots images with such accuracy that signs up to five miles away can be read clearly.

Sixty people, who were aged 60 or above, joined Thompson on the Welsh Mountains and a short film of their achievement will premiere at the Southbank gym’s launch.

This time around he is hoping that those at the pop-up gym will inspire members of the public with his free one-off High Intensity Interval workout that he especially designed.

These exercises are made up of ten different activities to be completed for one minute at a time.

A WEEKLY free music festival is coming to Flat Iron Square in the Borough, on 1 September.

Titled “Common Ground”, the festival will take place every Saturday throughout September, at the new venue spanning seven railway arches off Southwark Street.

With five family-friendly events, it will bring together a veritable slew of eclectic, cult, and under the radar talent across a number of different genres from folk and soul to reggae, Afrobeat and punk.

The festival will run from midday to midnight, and features sets from artists such as duo Nova Twins, Too Many Ts, and a set from Common Ground’s cofounder Beans on Toast (pictured), who headlines the inaugural event. A number of DJs will also perform at the event.

OHO Radio will broadcast the festival live, with sessions and interviews with the artists.

Proceeds made from donations at each event will be donated to a different charity each week, including Help Refugees, Raw Foundation, and The Felix Project, with more to be announced closer to launch.

Organisers of the festival said that it will benefit from Flat Iron Square’s regular weekend-long Flea Market, with the market itself weaving right through the Common Ground site until 6pm weekly.

Flat Iron Square recently earned itself the reputation of the unofficial London party home of the World Cup for all nations this Summer, and it looks set to keep the party atmosphere alive.

Response to knife and violent crime

AT THE Full Council meeting (Wednesday 25th July) the Liberal Democrat Council Group put down an amendment with some positive suggestions about how we can strengthen our communities and reduce the shockingly high levels of knife crime and knife injuries that currently exist in Southwark.

Our primary suggestion was for Southwark Council to recruit extra police officers under the Met Patrol Plus scheme, whereby the Mayor will match fund any additional police officers the borough pays for, effectively a “buy one get one free” scheme.

Our rational for calling on the administration to consider this option is that crime is increasing across London and we believe that with three young people murdered in our borough over the last three months, that the Council has a shared responsibility with the police to make tackling violent crime a key priority.

We cannot allow the situation to continue, where over the last 12 months in Southwark, there have been 805 knife incidents (2nd highest in London) and 272 knife injuries (highest in London).

I regret to say some Labour colleagues appeared to be more interested in making political points about the Liberal Democrats in government than coming together to consider what more we can collectively do to tackle this problem.

No one is suggesting that this alone will solve the complex problem of violent crime, but we are all agreed that the police are stretched to capacity at the moment, and a practical solution of creating a dedicated Violent Crime Unit of officers under the authority of the Borough Commander, is something that deserves serious consideration.

In Tower Hamlets the council has recruited extra police officers under the Met Patrol Plus scheme and is spending £1m a year, on a three year contract, for a Partnership Task Force.

In 2016-17 the Taskforce made 155 arrests and the Council expanded their scheme in July 2017.

This coupled with our suggestions for increasing partnership working with the voluntary and charity sectors to increase the number of active citizens in our borough and launching a civic pride campaign, along the lines of People Make Glasgow and We Love Manchester, are additional measures the Council can take to ensure the Council is playing its part in making Southwark a stronger, safer and more resilient borough.

Our Council motto is “United to Serve” and on an issue as important as this our residents expect no less of us.

I WAS deeply disappointed and saddened that my MP Neil Coyle voted for The Heathrow Airport expansion project

Especially considering the amount of air,noise and other environmental damage we already have in the borough of Southwark.

I suffer from COPD and I am sure that there are many more like me who have similar health complaints.

I would have expected him to have voted against this project, as it is estimated that this project would increase air traffic by about 30 per cent. That is not even taking in to account the increase in traffic to and from the airport.

I did send him an email asking not to vote for this,but it fell on deaf ears.

He also has stated on many occasions that he would not vote for anything that would damage his constituents,- is this hypocrisy or not?

I have sent him emails asking him to explain why he voted this way ,but he has failed to reply. This has left me no alternative but to take this issue up with the press.

I will give him his due and say that he has answered some of my emails, although Simon Hughes always answered all my emails promptly, even through I was a Labour supporter. I have always voted for Neil Coyle at the General Elections and even at his selection ballot which he won by one vote.

Later, whilst entertaining Johnny’s boss with Devilled Eggs and cheese straws, in an attempt to get her to give Johnny a promotion, wearing a billowing dress and fur wrap, Judy remarks, ‘People were much nicer to each other in the Fifties.’

Only to get the reply, ‘As long as you weren’t black, gay or disabled…’

Rock and roll plays on the radio as we watch Johnny get ready for work in the bedroom, while Judy, in full make up and heels, a dress straight out of Grease, half a dozen petticoats to make the skirt swirl, boils his egg and toasts his soldiers in the kitchen downstairs.

While breakfasting they fawn over each other before Judy kisses him off to work and then, for the first shocker in Laura Wade’s Home, I’m Darling, she gets a laptop from the drawer to order more authentic 50s stuff on Ebay to carry on with the 50s delusion we have been tricked into believing, and the one that Judy is obsessed with.

Our ‘domestic goddess’ then proceeds to decant all her shopping from its modern packaging into oldfashioned containers: cartoned milk into bottles; loose (real) tea into a caddy, while telling her friend, Fran, that she could also be like her if she read How To Run A House Without Help - a publication from the 1940s, and Judy’s Bible. Fran, however, doesn’t mind the dressing up but she doesn’t want to cook and clean all day.

But this Doris Day - Rock Hudson film set she has created around her is starting to show cracks. A visit from

friendship that develops between them, writes Katie Kelly…

Though the story by Michelle Magorian, is a much loved and ultimately uplifting one, it does not shy

away from the devastation of war or other sources of trauma and so I was interested to see how the British Theatre Academy - such a young company would deal with the more troubling

switch on a phrase or a gesture: When Johnny doesn’t put his fedora on to go out you know it is the beginning of the end.

A great cast ensure Home, I’m Darling is played as good as it can be, but Laura Wade has given the best lines to Katherine Parkinson’s Judy, who has not wasted one single syllable.

In this mock-1950s home we soon discover that ‘nostalgia ain’t what it

used to be’.

Young actors go to war parts of the story, adapted for stage by David Wood.

The answer is that they are extremely successful. James Sampson, as Mister Tom assumes a maturity both in character and acting performance that is well beyond his years.

Evan Huntley-Robertson as William Beech, the evacuee is convincingly vulnerable and likeable from the first moment. He develops his character wonderfully and his performance during William’s ill-fated return visit to London, at the request of his disturbed mother, shows extraordinary promise.

Special mention to Felix Hepburn who plays the hilariously verbose fellow evacuee Zach, whose every appearance brought real delight to the audience.

The cast is accomplished. The audience was, on the other hand, slightly wrong footed on a couple of occasions. Mister Tom’s dog was brought to life by some very competent puppetry but the rather low budget soft toy provoked titters for a couple of

minutes, which were rather out of place.

On another occasion the house lights going down caused many to start applauding, what they thought was the end of the performance, but was in fact a slightly cliched way to signal the death of a character. This was unfortunate and may be resolved in future shows. This play is running for a month so plenty of time to iron out this kind of glitch. The run will offer stage experience to many of the young company so expect some changes from the cast we saw.

Ultimately Goodnight Mister Tom is about how kindness and love can still triumph in a broken world. A message for us all, and one that I hope can be absorbed as well as conveyed by this impressive group of young people.

A NEW Alan Bennett play has been something to look forward since soon after he began writing plays, and awaiting Allelujah was no exception, writes Michael Holland...

Set in a geriatric ward in a local hospital that has served the community ‘from cradle to grave’, Allelujah opens with a lady with early dementia, isolated by a stark spotlight on a darkened stage, telling anyone who will listen that her daughter sold her house and put her into a home. ‘It was mine, she cries plaintively. Her fellow patients on the Dusty Springfield ward appear

and they all sing a song, because that is what old people want to do, apparently, according to one of the ward nurses.

It is the Bethlehem Hospital, somewhere near the Yorkshire moors, a name that has its own history in ‘Bedlam’ and mental health, and although it has been running quite successfully there are ministerial moves to close it down and privatise.

Bethlehem’s Chairman, one to never miss an opportunity, is always thinking of ways to up the hospital’s profile, but also has his own exit plan Sister Gilchrist has been at Bethlehem for over 20 years. She

has a sad back story and odd methods to keep the tight ship she keeps sailing smoothly. The way in which Sister Gilchrist ends the first half elicits a huge gasp from the audience, and much to talk about in the interval.

Allelujah is a lot of laughs, you can hear Bennett’s voice in every line, but always there, just beneath the veneer of everyday life, is a sick and sad world. ‘There are gay clubs in Barnsley these days,’ one snidy work experience kid says with a sneer to an elderly patient.

The writer, now 84, pokes with a sharp stick at austerity cuts, Brexit,

good people being sent back to their countries of origin, greed and the need to eternally ‘tick boxes’ . All the bad people in this are white.

Bennett and director Nick Hytner have drawn on the experience of age with Arlene Phillips choreographing the singing and dancing from a chorus line of octogenarians - who deservedly got the biggest clap at the end - and a cast of actors who fit nicely into their geriatric roles.

On the day that Cliff Richard fans sang his hit Congratulations to him after he wins a court case against the BBC, so a choir of elderly angels sing it to a killer Nurse. Then a man mocks

HORRIBLE HISTORIES: Barmy Britain (Part 4) tells the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the horrible truth, which means they slipped in a few contemporary Barmy Brexit gags as well, writes Michael Holland....

And while I was debating whether current affairs actually counted as history, the young girl next to me, no more than ten years old, was in hysterics at the Michael Gove and Boris Johnson jokes.

Having had big success with their live HH:BB Part 1-3 shows, a 4th was definitely going to happen, and like those that went before, it was well received very warmly and loudly by this audience - that I felt had an inordinate number of adults included in its number.

It doesn’t take three grown ups to escort one child to the theatre, does it? I can only assume that, like me, they borrow a kid as an excuse to go along.

But it is history, so everything is actual factual, and you can learn a lot. Not surprisingly, my young charge, Haydn, remembered all the poo facts, while I

England’s rich for their educational privilege and how ‘they think being English is a boast’. But then his speech to the audience tears away that overcoat of superiority to reveal the superciliousness and bigotry that crawls into all corners of the land.

Allelujah is one hell of a play.

Phone: 0333 320 0051 www.bridgetheatre.co.uk was disturbed by the news of Henry VIII having a minion to wipe his bum! A Chamberlain of the Chamber Pot, or some such title was conferred on this unlucky gentleman - Plus given acres of countryside as well, I imagine.

Stealing the show is our favourite baddie, Anthony Spargo, (a brilliant Captain Hook in Greenwich Theatre’s Peter Pan) who, along with his sidekick Neal Foster, quick-change their way through several centuries of horrible history in Barmy Britain, and making the once horrid Richard the Third into a rather nice gentleman - even though they did find his remains buried beneath a car park in Leicester. But if they say it in Horrible Histories, then it is undoubtably true.

Ultimately, both kids and grown ups loved this illuminating and funny show.

Don’t mind if I do, I said back. And that’s how myself and cider aficionado Rene ended up at Hop Burns and Black in the newly refurbished arches by Deptford Station, writes Michael Holland...

Hop Burns and Black is basically a posh off licence that kind of doubles up as a bar, with young Joris behind the counter imparting excellent beer and cider knowledge to anyone who asked. And I had lots of questions.

I discovered that Hop Burns and Black is the brainchild of New Zealand couple, Jen and Glenn, who obviously love their beer and, strangely, hot sauce. Along with more beers that you can shake a cocktail stick at, they have a wide selection of sauces concocted from the world’s hottest chillies, and they are not for the weak. They also sell chilli snacks that come with their own warning.

Firstly I concentrated on the London breweries and began my beer

journey with a Napa Brut IPA, a refreshing 6.3% abv from Gipsy Hill Brewery. It was not as dry as it made out but whetted my appetite for more.

My drinking companion opted for a Telegraph Hill Cider and remarked that every one of its 5% abv was good. Joris gave us a quick lesson on how they combine the hops and apples, which was both intriguing and made the drinking of it all the more enjoyable.

Keeping with the summery, pale ale vibe, I had a Brew by Numbers DDH Pale Ale, No. 3. This was a cloudy, hazy beer (5.8%), with citrussy notes.

Very nice, and all the way from Bermondsey. Rene’s next choice was Oliver’s Fine Cider (5.5%). This was quite hoppy as well as fruity, and was almost like a sweet wine.

By now local couple Tom and Sophie had joined our table. Tom was a real beer buff, and Sophie had followed suit rather then become a beer widow. Tom spoke in a language that few would understand, just that select tribe of home brewers

who know all the names of hop varieties.

It was now time for me to step out of my comfort zone with an Indian Porter from Kernel Brewery - the catalyst for so many breweries in Bermondsey, and ultimately, the Bermondsey Beer Mile. This was a dark, thick, almost broth-like liquid that had excellent viscosity. Not a drink for the heatwave, really, but oh so nice.

Rene’s London Mead (5.5%) was also a step away from what had gone before. This was rather flat - as it should be - but very tasty.

With the drinks and conversation flowing, and with pleasant company, the talk soon got round to how much Deptford had changed and the link between gentrification and social cleansing, highlighted by the fact that Goddard’s, the pie & mash shop that had been trading in Deptford for over one hundred years, was about to close its doors for the last time. We raised a glass to that traditional food and carried on drinking.

To mourn the passing of Goddard’s I moved away from London for an aptly named Shattered Dream, a salted chocolate caramel ale from Siren Brewery. The sweetness in the chocolate undertones belied the stout’s 9.1% abv - It had a Wow factor. Rene went for the Revenant Cider (4.5%), that she deemed ‘really nice’.

And so we neared the end of our tour of some of the best breweries around. Tom and Sophie stumbled off to their flat by the creek while me and Rene tried to focus on the job at hand and not see double. She had another Revenant, because it was so nice, while I chose a sensible 4.2% Five Points Field Day Citrus Pale that left a satisfying aftertaste that I took with me on the train home.

Rene was last seen pushing her bike down Deptford High Street.

Hop Burns and Black is the connoisseurs’ off licence - With over 350 of the world’s finest beers do not expect to get a six-pack of Carling.

In fact, if Carling did off licences it

would be like Hop Burns and Black, and each one would have its own Joris.

Photo archive to understand what children went through during WW1

IMAGES OF a British soldier with his family in Bermondsey and a child dressed up in her father’s uniform during World War One have been unearthed as part of an archive project.

One of the photographs is of the Fey family, who appeared to live in Bermondsey.

Albert Edward Fey is understood to have served in the 9th (Machine Gun) Battalion Royal Naval Division during WWI. He is pictured with his wife Ellen Elliston, their son Albert Edward junior and their daughters Florence and Ethel.

Research by The Army Children Archive suggests that Albert Edward Fey married Ellen Sarah Elliston in 1907 when they were both 23.

The couple had Annie Florence Fey in 1908, Ethel Caroline Fey in 1910 and Albert Edward Fey junior in 1913.

They were photographed at Angle’s Studios, based at 110 Southwark Park Road and 40 Walworth Road.

Another photograph, taken at EC Watling studio, based at 33 Jamaica Road, in Bermondsey, shows a young girl dressed up as a soldier.

The child appears to be wearing her father’s trench cap and kit, a leather bandolier, water bottle and what looks like a haversack.

She is holding a rifle in the picture, which is likely to be a toy, and the cap badge looks as though it could be from the Royal Artillery.

The Army Children Archive (TACA) was founded as a website (www.archhistory.co.uk) in 2007 by Clare Gibson, a writer, editor, historian – and herself a former army child.

The independent, not-for-profit archive preserves and shares information about British army children and their history.

The two photographs taken in Bermondsey are part of the archive’s ‘The Army Children of the First World War’ project, set up as part of the First World War Centenary Partnership led

Our new Dulwich Hamlet repor ter describes his first experience watching Gavin Rose’s side – and finds the values of the club and non-league football the per fect antidote to a multimillion pound, exploitative modern game.

I ATTENDED my first Dulwich Hamlet game last Saturday with little idea of what to expect.

Living in Dulwich for my entire life, I had heard plenty about the club. Their pro-LGBT activity and community initiatives are well known. In the last year, their problems with their Champion Hill landlords, Meadow Residential, has brought them further to my attention. This has been amplified by the backing they have received from high-profile figures in the game including Gary Lineker and Rio Ferdinand.

But why all this attention surrounding a club only newly promoted to the country’s sixth tier?

Stepping out of Welling station last weekend, I was immediately surrounded by a sea of pink shirts.

Passing by the first pub on the high street, I overheard a local shout: “Who the f**k wears pink football kits?” I chuckled to myself at the ease with which I felt an immediate sense of solidarity with the travelling fans.

Upon arrival at the Park View Road ground, I was immediately struck by the sheer number of Hamlet supporters, who seemed to outnumber Welling’s fans (and certainly out-chant them) on their own turf.

However, I soon realised my first mistake – failing to anticipate the lack of player names on shirts. This made reporting on the game a nightmare, but I was rescued by a Dulwich fan named Kap and his two acquaintances who provided me with a team sheet and plenty of

insight.

This sense of friendliness was reinforced when Welling scored and the two acquaintances cheered; unbeknownst to me they were actually Welling fans, who were more than willing to chat to Kap and myself about the game – something unknown to me as a usual watcher of Premier League football.

After the game, I stood awkwardly in the bar hoping to catch Dulwich Hamlet manager Gavin Rose’s attention for an interview – half expecting to be completely ignored.

However, he was totally approachable – showing admirable grace in the way he talked to the stuttering reporter in front of him and in his reflections on the game.

My final memory of leaving the ground was a discussion with the parents of Welling United goalscorer, Jack Jebb. His father turned towards the group of Dulwich supporters behind the goal, still jumping up and down waving palm trees in the air as if they’d won the league, and not just lost 2-0.

“They’re impressive aren’t they”, he remarked and I couldn’t have agreed more. All this despite a disappointing result.

My personal experience and the evident respect of opposition fans shows that Dulwich is a club leading by example. In today’s era of £200million transfers, ever-rising ticket prices and kits recycled every year to extort fans’ money (Manchester United’s full kit this season costs £183), Dulwich are one of the few clubs putting their fanbase first. Perhaps they are the perfect antithesis to their cashfuelled rivals, Billericay Town.

Right from the players and management staff through to the fans, Hamlet fully deserve their following.

I thoroughly look forward to being a part of it through the lows and hopefully the highs over the coming season.

GAVIN ROSE isn’t making any predictions about Dulwich Hamlet this season – and believes it will be “ten or fifteen” games before a clear picture emerges of their standing in the league, writes John Kelly...

Hamlet are in their first-ever season in National League South, and will be up against some big sides at this level with far higher budgets, including bigspending Billericay Town, Woking and Dartford, the latter who signed striker Jamie Philpot this summer after his release by Millwall, where he had played for the first team.

That gives some idea of the kind of challenge Hamlet face.

And Rose does not want to look too far ahead as his side aim to establish themselves in the division.

“We don’t know what the league’s going to throw up for us,” Rose said.

“It’d be silly for us to predict this, that or the other because we’ve never been in the league and obviously we’ll be learning as we go along.

“But I think after we get maybe ten or fifteen games in we’ll understand where we are and what our plan is because after you play that many games you know, ‘right, we might be doing well to stay in the league or, actually, we’re okay, we’ll be a mid-table team or, we can do more’.

“So, I think we’ve got to wait another ten/fifteen games to see where we are, see how difficult it is and go from there, basically.”

Fine Matt finish boosts Dulwich

AN EXCELLENT unbeaten 80 by Matt Marfani saw Dulwich to a four-wicket victory in their Travelbag Surrey Championship Division 2 match at home to Kingstonian last weekend, writes John Smith...

The visitors elected to bat, but got off to a bad start when acting skipper Jon Lodwick had Imran Khalid lbw off the second ball of the match. This brought in Mohammed Afzal, who slogged 21 runs and was dropped twice before being bowled by Kamran Munawar, all in the space of ten balls.

Haroon Ashfaq and visiting skipper Amir Hussain then added 42 in ten overs against the quickies, but the advent of Salaar Waqar brought immediate reward when he bowled Ashfaq with his second ball. Alex Gledhill joined the attack and the spinners slowed the scoring rate.

Waqar had Hussain lbw to make it 83-4

in the 20th over.

Abid Ahmed and Rohit Syed then added 51 in 16.2 overs for the fifth wicket, taking the score to 134 after 35.5 before Ahmed was stumped off Patrick George. This was the first of five wickets to fall in five overs for 21 runs, with another one for George, two more for Waqar, and one for Munawar.

Abdul Aziz then farmed the strike to add 22 for the last wicket without his partner facing a ball. Waqar finished with 4-44. After a disappointing start to the season he has taken seventeen wickets in his last five matches. George took 3-20 to give him seven wickets against these opponents this year. Kingstonian were dismissed for 177, leaving 7.2 of their overs unused. Six of their batsmen had passed 20, but Syed with 32 was the only one to reach 30.

Aziz then opened the bowling and had both openers caught behind in his first

three overs, Ed Towner in the second for five and Nick Hudson in the third for a typically belligerent sixteen comprising four boundaries. Guy Skinner was caught at slip off Dan Gascoyne in the next over.

Marfani and Waqar thus came together with the score on 30-3 after six overs.

They started circumspectly at first, with only twelve runs coming off their first six overs together, but gradually started to raise the tempo. The stand had reached 82 when Waqar hit a full toss to deep midwicket to be dismissed for 32, made off 58 balls. Sam Ellison saw Marfani past his 50 before falling for eleven with the score on 131. Ed Hopkins helped add another eighteen before becoming the sixth wicket to fall.

Munawar thus joined Marfani with 29 still needed, but with plenty of overs in hand the pair were able to inch towards their target. They had reached 170 when

Munawar finished it off with two fours off successive balls. Marfani’s 80 came off 124 balls and was his second fifty of the campaign. It was the highest score by any Dulwich player this year.

Dulwich thus gained 20 points from this match while their opponents got just three and are now only seven points above them. Their two closest rivals both lost, and Dulwich therefore leapfrog them into eighth place. But with four matches to go and only 15 points separating the bottom four everything remains in the balance.

This weekend, Dulwich have a difficult match away to leaders Walton on Thames, who beat them by just one wicket in a low scoring game earlier in the season.

RESULT: Kingstonian 177 (42.4) lost to Dulwich 178-6 (45.5) by 4 wickets

Rangers, who were in a financial position to complete the high-profile signing of Billy Knott this summer.

Knott, 25, played in League One for Rochdale last season and has also played at that level for Bradford City and Gillingham.

Hamlet will also be up against their former forward Nana Boakye-Yiadom, who joined Rangers in May. Player-manager Sammy Moore, who is just 30, also has a number of players with real pedigree in his squad, including goalkeeper Sam Beasant – son of former Wimbledon stopper Dave – and former Dons striker Jack Midson.

Fisher fall to first-day loss

FISHER WERE narrowly beaten

by Hollands & Blair on their return to the Southern Counties East Football League Premier Division last weekend.

Richie Hamill’s set-pieces gave Dean Harrison’s Fisher a threat early on, before Luke Haidarovic was forced to clear off the line for the visitors.

Fisher had a half-chance before the break from a corner but couldn’t take advantage of it.

In sweltering conditions both sides were allowed a water break, and the game resumed with the hosts more switched on. They took the lead when Jason Fregene turned inside the box and fired past Fisher goalkeeper Hossam Hassan.

Fisher pressed for an equaliser, and had a chance to earn a point when Hamill crossed for Trey Small, but he headed over.

Fisher were playing their first home game of the season against Croydon at St Paul’s on Tuesday night.

Millwall 2 - 2 Middlesbrough

A FRIEND in need is a friend indeed.

Or so it seemed at The Den on Saturday.

It had appeared to be job just about done when Jiri Skalak headed the ball away in the 97th minute from a Middlesbrough throw-in.

Referee Kevin Friend could have blown his whistle then – it was already a minute and a half beyond the allocated five minutes stoppage time.

But for some reason Friend decided to let play go on. Even then Millwall should really have had enough players back to defend Lewis Wing’s bouncing halfvolley back into the box, but Mahlon Romeo got on the wrong side of George Friend and the former Lions loanee stuck out a long leg to toe-poke past Jordan Archer.

It was a real punch in the guts, but the manner of how it came about only emphasised again how much Millwall need a clone or two of Lee Gregory or Steve Morison at the other end of the pitch.

With those two up top Millwall dominated Boro and should have been at least three up and been coasting towards the finish line before the chaotic last ten minutes.

It further underlined how much they are needed when Tom Elliott had a late chance to get a third when he found himself in behind the last defender, but he blasted over from distance instead of taking the ball further in towards goal or even towards the corner flag to waste a few more vital seconds.

The frustration was Boro’s late, desperate tactics should have been meat and drink to this Millwall defence. With three minutes left, Dael Fry boomed a long ball forwards that Marcus Tavernier flicked on and Britt Assombalonga nodded inside. Romeo seemed to have it covered but dallied on the ball rather than finding Row Z, allowing Tavernier to nip in and cross for Martin Braithwaite to poke home through the legs of Jordan Archer.

Boro got a scent of blood when they should have been dead and buried, and though the referee went on to show he was no friend of Millwall’s, there were also questions to be asked of the home players why there was such panic late on.

It should never have come down to that late collapse. Millwall looked home and dry – dry being the operative word on another scorching London day – when Morison and Gregory combined, Aiden O’Brien then smacking home from Gregory’s instinctive pass.

In the 37th minute Gregory anticipated Aden Flint’s weak back-header to get there before Darren Randolph and finish after the ball had come back off the stopper. Morison was inches away from making it three early in the second half when he slid in but couldn’t connect with Gregory’s cross. And O’Brien was the same distance away from getting his head on Jed Wallace’s delivery a few yards out.

Millwall were playing like the last game of last season, the rousing 1-0 win over Aston Villa, was last week rather than three months ago.

Despite the late trauma, they can take a lot of confidence into this Saturday’s game with Blackburn, when they hope to get

performance that was against a team that will arguably be in the top two,” Harris said. “Tony has made it clear he has business to get done and there were some top players missing from their team, which gave us a big boost.

“They’re a quality side and have an experienced manager who knows what it takes to be promoted. I thought we were excellent, we matched them all the way and went past them most of the game.

“But if you don’t get the third or fourth goal and give [Boro striker Martin Braithwaite] one chance, he puts it in the net. They then get a sense of what they can achieve, and they go for

the throat. That’s what makes them good players.”

Harris was asked afterwards if the achievements from January last season and a performance of such vigour and confidence – until the last ten minutes – on Saturday meant it was right there were expectations of a top-six challenge.

He responded: “I don’t think we can get carried away. We’ve just thrown two points away at home. We won’t achieve anything if we don’t play better for 96 minutes rather than 88 minutes.

“We have to learn fast. We’re speaking about playing against quality players and teams. That’s week-in,

FAR FROM being angry with his players for blowing a two-goal lead against Middlesbrough last Saturday, Neil Harris revealed he praised his side for their performance against the strong promotion favourites.

Millwall led 2-0 with three minutes left, but gained only a point following Boro’s two late goals.

The Lions had Tony Pulis’ side on the back foot for the majority of the game before the late drama.

“I told my players what a top

week-out in the Championship.

“We overachieved last year, we’re all fully aware of that, but we also showed our standards and the boundaries we can reach. And we showed that for 88 minutes again.

“I think I’ve got good players, I think I’ve got a really good Millwall team.

We’ve also brought some players in that are going to add to that quality.

“What’s achievable here? Well, if we make performances like that, but for 96 minutes, then we can win a lot of games of football this year.

“We are an aggressive, physical team, we intimidate the opposition and that’s how I want my side to be. That’s what

my fans demand.

“But we’ve also got good players that can play and pass and move. It’s very underestimated at times, our quality. We scored some outstanding team goals last year.

“Yes, we like to get the ball forward at times, but we can play as well. I thought we showed a real good blend [Saturday] of when we wanted to get the ball forward quickly and when we wanted to pass the ball and move.

“When you can do both sides of the game and when the players can make really good decisions at the right time then we’re a very difficult team to play against.”

JIRI SKALAK knew he had to get out of Brighton – or see his career go down the pan.

Before his Millwall debut against Middlesbrough last Saturday, Skalak’s last league appearance was in April 2017, for already-promoted Brighton in a 1-0 defeat to Bristol City.

Chris Hughton’s Seagulls invested heavily in their squad that summer in preparation for the Premier League, the likes of José Izquierdo, who played in Skalak’s position on the left of midfield, joining for a club-record £13.5million.

That pushed Skalak out of the picture, and he played just two EFL Cup games and an FA Cup tie last season before injuring his ankle in January.

Millwall wanted to sign him before that setback, but Brighton wouldn’t allow him to leave. But when the chance came around again the combination of knowing he had to move on for first-team football and the attraction of Millwall made it an easy decision.

“I spoke with the gaffer here and with my agent about this club,” Skalak explained. “I knew quite a lot about this club before I came. I heard about the fans. I really like this mentality, it’s good to have these fans because when you play home or away it helps you a lot.

“I like everything about Millwall. I spoke with the manager about how Millwall play, I already saw a couple of games on videos and the style of play, the shape.

“One of the things the gaffer wants from me is delivery, and the players I’ve seen in training have the same quality from deliveries. What he wants from me I will do.

“Last year I stayed because when we got promoted it was my dream to play

in the Premier League, but I didn’t get the chance. I wanted to leave last January but Brighton stopped me.

After that I got injured. “[Hughton] told me I couldn’t do anything better. I was training well, he just preferred other types of players

“We both could have started with three points but Tony, like myself, was probably delighted to get a point on the board.”

Both sides had identical results last Saturday, Millwall drawing 2-2 at home to Middlesbrough and Rovers denied a win at Ipswich.

“It’s a tough first away game for us,”

Harris said. “The teams that come up, like us last year, start full of confidence and excitement, you get the crowd right behind you.

“We have to make sure we’re ready for that. We have to make sure we play as well as we did for 87 minutes against Boro for the 90 or 96 or whatever it’s going to be.

“I really enjoyed watching us last Saturday, I really enjoyed the atmosphere in the stadium and I thought it was an excellent performance.

“The second half of the season on the road last year, we have to make sure we start like that this year.

“Blackburn have got some very talented players, they’re very good going forward and deserved to get out of the division last year.

“And, really, them and Wigan were Championship teams playing in League One, so they’re ready for this league straightaway. It’s a tough first away game but we’re going to have 23 tough away games this year.”

NEIL HARRIS has revealed that Millwall were interested in signing Bradley Dack two years ago – but they couldn’t afford him.

Dack, now with this Saturday’s opponents Blackburn Rovers, was Gillingham’s top scorer in 2015-16 in League One with thirteen goals, including one in a 3-0 win at The Den. Millwall watched midfielder Dack that season, but his increasingly brilliant form moved him out of the Lions’ financial reach, with Bristol City reportedly having a £2million bid for him turned down.

Dack, 24, didn’t hit the same heights the following season as Gillingham just about survived relegation to League Two. He moved to Tony Mowbray’s Blackburn last summer for an initial fee of £750,000 and was their top league scorer with eighteen goals as they finished second to clinch promotion.

Blackburn this week also signed striker Adam Armstrong on a permanent deal from Newcastle.

“In Brighton it was very nice when we got promoted. But last year it was very hard. I still worked hard but didn’t get the chance.”

This summer, Skalak had options to move back to the Czech Republic – he was born in Pardubice, a city on the River Elbe – and there were other European clubs showing interest in him.

But he wasn’t ready to give up on his English dream.

“For me and for most players the Premier League and the Championship are the best leagues with the fans here,” Skalak continued.

“I don’t think any other league is better, that’s why I wanted to stay here and not move anywhere else.

“When I came here it was quicker and stronger, the type of football we play here in England is absolutely different from anywhere else. In the Czech Republic it’s more tactical.

“In the Championship there are many teams that can get promoted and every year it will be harder and harder.

“I’ve played football all my life. I tried a bit of ice hockey but my dream was to play in England. This dream came true a couple of years ago.

Another dream is to play Premier League and I hope one day I will get this dream.”

It’s not too far-fetched, after last season, to think that could be with Millwall. He has experienced going up with Brighton, like Millwall a club that has made sensible decisions over the past four years and grown steadily under a bright manager.

Skalak thinks his new side should be aiming for the top six.

“It’s our target,” Skalak said. “Every season you must try to be better and if Millwall finished last season eighth, now it should be the play-offs.

“But this league is so hard. There are maybe ten or fifteen teams who can be in the play-offs. We must play each game 100 per cent, keep going and we will see what happens.”

Harris unmoved as giants linked with Lions stars EXCLUSIVE

NEIL HARRIS has again insisted there would be no first-team departures this month – after reports this week linked a number of Championship rivals with moves for key Lions players.

Harris revealed there has been interest from clubs in a number of Millwall players this summer. Glasgow Rangers’ bid to sign Jake Cooper was well known, and this week Leeds and Aston Villa were reported to want George Saville, while Sheffield United were

again linked with Lee Gregory.

Harris says the value of his players has shot up after their performances since they joined the club, particularly following the run to the verge of pinching a play-off spot last season.

But he is determined that none of them will leave.

“My words are clear: there are no plans to sell in this window,” Harris said.

“There is interest in our players, of course there is, there has been all summer and there will be next winter.

“We’ve got good players, they proved it last year and again last Saturday. The players need to keep proving it all the time because then we improve as a squad.

“We’ve had clubs linked with our

players, we’ve been linked with players – the majority of it is a load of rubbish.

“We’re in a really good place and the dressing room is in a good place at the moment. The boys were thoroughly disappointed [after conceding two late goals to Middlesbrough] last weekend because they completely bossed a top, top side for so long.

“We’ve got the capabilities to be a good side this year. We have to make sure that we focus on that and nothing else.”

Rangers were understood to have offered up to £3million for Cooper and when asked if Millwall put valuations on their players, Harris said: “Any player is only worth what someone is willing to pay. The current market is a

Millwall look at loan options

He added: “You see the market values and then you think: where does that put your own players? Who knows? What I do know is some of my players, there aren’t many better than them in the Championship. Certainly based on what I saw last year.

“The value of our players has risen dramatically from when we brought them in, whether that was last summer or whether it was the summer before.

“It’s like the housing market, it continues to rise all the time.

“We don’t really worry too much, we don’t put values on our players and our players are not going anywhere. It’s as simple as that, really.”

MILLWALL WERE turning their attention to the loan market as Thursday’s deadline for permanent transfers loomed – but were still being linked with a swoop for Barnsley striker Tom Bradshaw before the 5pm cutoff.

A number of Championship sides were scrambling to complete deals before the first deadline of the window (August 9) but EFL clubs have until August 31 to sign players on loan.

There will also be permanent transfers in all but name up to that date, with clubs completing loan deals with agreements for permanent terms that will be effective from next January 1.

Millwall were close to coming to an agreement with Barnsley for their centre-forward Bradshaw, 26, earlier this summer only for discussion to stall.

Lions boss Neil Harris’ main priority for the rest of the transfer window is the signing of another striker, but there could also be additional acquisitions if players leave on loan.

The most likely candidates to fall into that category are Dave Martin, Shane Ferguson and Ben Thompson.

None of the three were in the match-day squad on the opening day of the season last weekend against Middlesbrough, and Harris will not stand in their way if they want to leave for regular first-team football.

However, Harris would also want cover in, particularly if Thompson departs as that would leave just three first-team midfielders in his squad.
