Reminiscent of the Hatton Garden heist last year, where criminals drilled through a concrete wall to gain access to a jewellers, the criminals crawled through thick bushes behind House of Fashion in Southwark Park Road and knocked through a three-layer-thick brick wall overnight.

We hope that Lewisham made the right decision

Y THE time you read this paper, a decision will have been made which could affect the very survival of Millwall Football Club.

Last night, Lewisham Council was due to decide whether to carry out a Compulsory Purchase Order on part of the club’s ground, as part of a highly controversial development scheme. The Labour cabinet will have made the decision, faced with a motion opposing the proposal that was signed by 22 of its own councillors.

It’s no real surprise that the council faces an outcry over its decision to team up with developer Renewal, effectively excluding the club from massively profitable development all around it indeed on its very own turf. It makes zero sense to pretend that the club isn’t the key feature of the area - in fact it defines what this part of London is. And the proposal as it stands would chop away critical parts of the club’s current infrastructure and community assets.

Given that the majority of Millwall fans now live in Kent, Den owner John Berylson could be forgiven for thinking about selling off the land and moving the club further out. He hasn’t, and instead he’s spent a lot of money keeping the club in Bermondsey, its dockers’ heartland.

It’s true that the scheme proposed by Renewal is for six times the number of homes, and goodness knows we need them. And yet, Renewal have been vague about the level of genuinely affordable housing envisaged for the scheme. So it could well be luxury flats crammed into the area, which is probably the very last thing we need. The council’s report mentions a figure of just twelve per cent affordable, which if applied to the whole scheme would mean some 2,100 luxury properties - an eye-watering proposition for a developer.

Their promise of 2,000 jobs, new transport infrastructure and a sports centre are all of interest - but would certainly be needed with so many new people coming into the area. By and large, they would just be soaking up the extra demand, rather than drastically improving the lot of the current residents.

Yet regardless of the pros and cons, we don’t know what a joint proposal between Renewal and Millwall could look like - because Lewisham Council haven’t asked them to come up with one.

How much better could the development plan look with Millwall FC - a football club steeped in the rich history of the area - on board to drive the project forward, rather than threatening its future and ending up, somewhat ironically, with an indoor sports centre and health complex in its place?

We sincerely hope that Lewisham have made the right decision, and will now go back to the drawing board to involve a club that is the beating heart of the area they want to redevelop.

Southwark special constable has been driving across London delivering books for youngsters held overnight in cells

A POLICE volunteer has been driving all over London in a big white van delivering classic novels to young inmates facing a night in the nick.

Special Constable Steve Whitmore from Southwark started the Books in Nicks project after a touching experience, when he comforted a young lad in custody by giving him a copy of A Catcher In The Rye. “It was quite a difficult time for him,” Steve said. “I had just arrested him and taken him into custody and he had just turned eighteen.

“But when he saw a book he

automatically took interest. But there were not any in the station that were suitable for his age. So I gave him my own book and he was delighted.

“It’s the whole concept of a young person coming through to adulthood and the feelings of alienation. It just seemed to fit the situation. He had never come across it before, but I told him I thought he might identify with it.

“It really created some common ground between us and it helped him relax.

“I would love it if we could have a Harry Potter in every police cell. What we also do is put leaflets in each book letting offenders know what help they can get upon release.”

Steve founded the project by linking

up with the Give a Book charity, who often donate literature to schools.

A year after his first donation to that young man, more than 1,000 have gone to 43 custody units in London.

Steve says there about 30 titles in the different units, and in different languages.

And two boxes of twenty books – often brand new copies donated by publishers – have been delivered to both Walworth and Peckham police stations.

Sarah Moorehead, a trustee of Give a Book, told the News: “Steve got in touch with us and we thought it was a lovely project. We thought it was a wonderful idea.

PRISON INMATES have been given a creative way to learn new skills thanks to an unlikely partnership with a renowned seamstress from Peckham.

“I think it’s so nice to have your own brand new book in your hands. I think these kids come in and they probably have to sit around waiting a lot and it will take their minds off what’s going on and give them some distraction.

She added: I think a lot of detainees are quite young, so we do like children’s books too. The majority of young people in custody are ages fifteen to seventeen, but it can be as young as ten years old.”

Tessa Evelegh has teamed up with the Pecan foodbank in Peckham High Street, and Prosper4 Business, a social enterprise set up by exoffenders.

Together they have set up a new programme offering offenders workshops on how to manufacture bags and fashion accessories and garner skills to set up their own businesses.

Their ‘PecanPi’ project is operating in prisons from Nottingham to HMP Downview in south London and Thameside in Greenwich.

“We’re delighted the bags are now being made in prison as we know that each one has been made to the highest standard,” Tessa said.

“The value is not only in the bag, but in the stories that each bag tells about the person who made them.”

The fruits of their hard labour will be sold at the Handmade Fair, run

by TV presenter Kirstie Allsopp at Hampton Court Palace between September 16 and 18.

Government Housing Act will see households earning over £40k pay more for council homes - and tenants will have to reveal their wages

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL has voiced its “anger” at new government legislation that could see thousands of council tenants forced to pay higher rents.

The Housing and Planning Act was passed into law in May this year. One of its most controversial sections, ‘Pay to Stay’, has been seized on by London politicians and housing campaigners for the “punitive” effect it will have on council tenants.

Though the finer details are still in the making, Pay to Stay will force council tenants with gross household incomes of over £40,000 to pay more rent.

Outside of London, it will take effect at

£31,000.

The exact details have yet to be finalised, but other UK authorities have given guide figures for how much extra their tenants could end up paying.

Oxford City Council has said tenants will pay an extra £150 per year for every £1,000 they earn over the limit.

Councillor Stephanie Cryan, cabinet member for housing, told the News: “[Pay to Stay] means that a family in London with two people earning £20,000 – which really isn’t very much for London – will be hit. This is going to penalise low earners.”

The government has argued the policy is right because tax payers’ money should not be used to subsidise people’s rents if they are earning “higher than average incomes”. The Office of

National Statics published in 2015 that the median wage in Southwark is £34,139 per year – slightly below the average for the whole London. The London Living Wage works out as roughly £18,570 per year.

But Cllr Cryan, in a letter to the government’s housing minister, Croydon MP Gavin Barwell, has called the policy “punitive” and claiming it will “break up communities”.

“I would like to think that the housing minister, as a London politician, would understand the issues with housing we are facing, but he has been completely unsympathetic” she said.

cope with the Act.” Councils including Southwark, which has over 38,000 council tenants, the fourth highest in Britain, will not be allowed to keep the extra revenue generated from forcing to charge extra to tenants. The money will instead be funnelled back to central government.

Cllr Cryan has also railed against the government’s plans for the burden on councils to collecting information on all of their tenants’ annual earnings.

She said: “It will be intrusive for the council to collect information from all of its tenants on what they earn. It would also be very difficult and costly for the council to work out the average wages of people who are selfemployed, whose earnings very each

month.

“I also think it makes a disincentive for people to aspire to earn more if they find they have to pay more rent.

“Frankly this makes me very angry. It shows we have a government that isn’t interested in people who need help and assistance from council. It shows they care about the one per cent.”

A Department of Communities and Local Government spokesman said: “It’s simply not fair that hard-working people are subsidising the lifestyles of those on higher than average incomes, including tens of thousands of households earning £50,000 or more.

“Pay to stay better reflects tenants’ ability to pay while those who genuinely need support continue to receive it.”

Gun-wielding robber steals man’s bag and escapes on moped BERMONDSEY

A GUNMAN robbed a worker at the Biscuit Factory in Bermondsey last month, and fled on a mate’s moped.

A Met Police spokesperson confirmed the force was called on August 16 to reports of the gunpoint robbery at 3.05pm.

The male victim’s bag was stolen, though he was not hurt in the attack.

The suspect and moped driver are

still at large, and no arrests have been made.

Anyone with information that could help the police should call 101 to assist with their ongoing enquiries.

The News understands that a team of six officers carried out an arrest on August 24, at the same location next to Drummond Road.

A male who had been driving a moped was apprehended and questioned at the scene at about 10.30am. He was then released shortly afterwards.

Police were unable to confirm that the two incidents were connected.

When shop owner Zamray Khan came across the hole on Monday morning on August 22, he found large amounts of stock missing, with a vacuum cleaner by the entry point abandoned by the criminals due to its size.

Mr Khan told the News as the wall was repaired that this was the fourth time the shop had been burgled in the last five years.

He said: “It happened on Sunday night and in the morning we opened the shop and saw they had taken mobiles and mobile accessories. We thought to ourselves ‘how did they come in and from where?’. When I came into the shop more I saw the hole in the shop and called the police.

“After ten minutes the police came and officers checked finger prints.

We have lost a lot of money. In the last five years they [thieves] came through the roof and through the fire exit. It stopped for two years then this happened.

“It’s not a small problem as it makes me lose a lot of money. How long can you continue to let this happen?

“You can’t go to sleep because of what might happen again. It’s not a joke.”

A builder repairing the wall said the thieves must have had tools to break through the wall.

A police spokesperson said that there had been no arrests so far and that enquiries were ongoing.

Ms Hayes told the News: “I’ve seen Owen Smith in Parliament and can tell you what a brilliant Labour voice he is.

During the last year, he’s secured major victories over cruel Tory cuts to disability benefits and over cuts to support for lowpaid workers.

“Before that, as shadow of secretary of state, he stood up for Wales when the cuts were hammering working families and rallied against the Tory tax cuts for millionaires.

“When he was in Labour’s health team, Owen fought the Tories’ plans to privatise the NHS tooth and nail. I think Labour will have a much better chance of forming the next government and making the difference we want to see for the communities we seek to serve and represent with Owen Smith as our

“We’ve got regional elections next year and there are so many other things the party should be working on.

“I know Jeremy well, having worked with him in Islington. But having been part of Labour’s London Assembly team, it shows what a strong, united Labour party can do.

“At the moment the Parliamentary Labour Party are not united and I don’t think Jeremy is the one to bring that unity. I also think there are too many men. I think it’s a shame we can’t put forward two women candidates.

TWO MORE of Southwark’s top politicians have declared their intention to vote for Owen Smith MP over Jeremy Corbyn in the upcoming Labour Party leader election.

LEWISHAM COUNCIL’S decision on whether to carry out a Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) on Millwall’s ground was due to be made yesterday night, amid widespread opposition.

The Labour cabinet, who were to have the final say on the order, faced pressure from their own party group on Monday night after a motion opposing the proposal was backed by 22 councillors.

More than 23,000 people, including Gary Lineker and Deputy Labour Leader Tom Watson, either signed or shared the petition to “Defend Our Den” and the club’s chairman, John Berylson, wrote to the London Mayor Sadiq Khan asking him to intervene.

He continues that Millwall have been excluded from proposals: “in spite of us offering to develop the land ourselves to create 400 residential properties, new homes for the MCT and the threatened local businesses and share the profits with the council, within the planned Renewal New Bermondsey development.

The aim of the CPO is to buy the Den’s car park, land used by the Millwall Community Trust and some other parts for the council to then sell onto property developers Renewal.

Both the council and Renewal have spent twelve years purchasing land in north Lewisham in order to create a 2,400-home development.

Walworth zoo to be reborn

WALWORTH: The historic Surrey Zoological Gardens will be reborn at a community festival for tomorrow and Saturday.

‘Animals’ will be brought back to Pasley Park in Manor Place on Friday from 7.30pm, via a lantern procession produced by pupils from three local schools and artist Harriet Hill. Actors from the People’s Company will also stage perform scenes and historical characters from the scene, as part of the Walworth Society’s Animated History tours.

On Saturday, the entire park will be transformed for a free community festival day, opened by Southwark Mayor Kath Whittam at 12pm. There will be a dog show at 2.30pm, with music from steel bands, DJs, choirs and dancers. Hamlet union day

DULWICH: Dulwich Hamlet FC and Dulwich Hamlet Supporters’ Trust will hold a Trade Union Day to raise funds for the International Brigades Memorial Trust for the anniversary of the Spanish Civil War.

The event will be held on October 6 to coincide with the club’s game against Bognor Regis Town FC. The Trust was set up to remember those who lost their lives fighting the dictator Franko between 1936 and 1939.

Correction

PARENTS WERE left frustrated this week after uniform changes at Bermondsey’s City of London Academy Southwark saw children sent home on the first day of school - because of their shoes.

Students who turned up in shoes they say they had worn in previous years were sent away if their parents could be contacted.

Amy Griffiths, a parent who had two of her children sent home, said: “Over the summer they changed it [the uniform rules]. My son and daughter went in with the same uniform as last year. My daughter is a big girl with big feet and Kicker [the shoe brand] boots are the only ones that fit.

“I can’t just go into a store and get another pair. She was sent home because the shoes are not allowed. I understand the need for uniform but we have never had any issue with the Kickers.

“All these parents went out to buy these boots and now have to go out and buy a new pair.”

Aaron Dutton, another parent, said: “My little girl was sent home because of her shoes. I bought her black patent leather shoes but they [the school] said they were no good because you can’t polish them.”

went home to change after we had been in contact with their parents for authorisation. Where we were unable to contact parents, pupils were allowed to continue their learning.

“The policy has been communicated to parents on several occasions including by post and it is available on our website – and clearly states that students who come to the Academy without the correct uniform will be sent home to change.

“We value feedback from parents and we will continue to develop our uniform policy further in the light of their comments.

“As well as an established PTA, the Academy has introduced a termly Parents' Coffee Morning to enable them to continue to work in partnership with the Academy.”

Fun day raises over £16,000

BERMONDSEY: A broken fire hydrant by the recently finished side of London Bridge station threw water as high as twenty feet in the air this week, just days after the road re-opened.

St Thomas Street was soaked as the impromptu water feature showered down, as bemused commuters looked on.

Cathedrals ward councillor David Noakes was among others who tweeted about the incident, writing: “A huge impromptu twenty feet high water feature has appeared on St Thomas Street days after the road has re-opened!”

Alfie Green, another onlooker, said: “Pipe has burst and is literally exploding all over St Thomas Street onto Bermondsey Street.”

A Thames Water spokesperson told the News that it was not a burst water main, and that a fire hydrant had blown. It was repaired on Tuesday evening.

‘He insisted he would give me his kidney’ - ill mum reveals stabbed son’s plan to tackle her diabetes BERMONDSEY

A 50-YEAR-OLD man was arrested in connection with murder on Tuesday, following the death of a nineteen-year-old from Bermondsey last month.

On the night of August 3, Andrew Oteng-Owusu was attacked while walking back from a corner shop with his mum’s shopping.

The young lad, who was waiting for his A-levels results, and hoped to go to university, was allegedly stabbed whilst walking a short distance from his flat in the Lovelinch Estate, near Millwall’s stadium.

His tightly-knit community joined in collective grief the following morning, after Andrew was pronounced dead at 11.30am in King’s College Hospital, twelve hours after emergency services were called.

None have felt the pain more acutely than his mother, Tina Ababio, who was dependent on her only child as her “sole carer”.

The former nurse of 45 has long suffered from issues with her kidney, and uses a walking stick. Andrew helped her use a dialysis machine three times a week, and ran all sorts of errands which any child would normally expect to be taken care of by their own mum or dad.

Tina has told the News that for over a year, Andrew offered many times to donate one of his own kidneys and restore his mum’s health.

“He would see me feeling tired and in pain, and he would tell me ‘mummy, I will give you one of my kidneys, and make you better’.

“But I would always tell him, maybe when you are older, 21 or 22, and you have thought about it and you are sure,” Tina said.

Tina’s doctors have now said it is too late to transplant of one of Andrew’s kidneys to her.

By all accounts, the young man from the Lovelinch Estate was unusually gifted with an unending wilfulness to “love everyone” and “see the good in everybody”.

Andrew’s grandma, also called Tina, was abroad when the agonising news was broken to her in a phone call from her daughter.

“I nearly fainted,” she said. “When people found out what happened to Andrew so many people came here and cried for this young man and his mum.

“If you come to this country and you want to work hard and you are pleasant then you will be welcomed. That is

what our family has always found.

That’s why we raised Andrew to love any Tom Dick and Harry.”

Since his tragic death, the News has heard endlessly how Andrew was known by everyone in his estate as a “helpful” and “caring” boy.

“Even the corner shop man was crying, he had known Andrew since he was seven,” his grandma said.

“Children on the estate would knock for him every day and he would always have children follow him home from school. He loved bringing friends home and cook for people and play Xbox.

Everyone was welcome here.

“He never complained. When he was young, Chelsea Football Club had wanted to sign him, but because I couldn’t take him to training, he had to give up.

“Even then, he understood and he didn’t complain. He just accepted it and

was happy.”

Following his death, Met Police officers knocked on every door on the estate and spoke to everyone they could.

Scotland Yard maintain that they urgently wish to speak to a certain young man (in his late teens or early twenties – wearing a white t-shirt and a New-Era cap) who helped Andrew walk to his block of flats after the wound was inflicted. So far, there is still no-one who has been able to name this individual.

It is believed that Andrew bravely managed to pull himself up several flights of stairs to his flat.

Tina heard a banging on the door. She called out down the stairs “Nana” to him, as she always would. But this time her son’s voice did not reply.

She came down to find her boy collapsed at the front door.

“All he could say was that he couldn’t

breathe and that he wanted water. He kept saying it over and over,” Tina said.

“One of his friends came up here, and we were trying to ask Andrew ‘who did this to you’, but he couldn’t say anything.”

With her hand, Tina gestured a line across her thigh to show where the blade had cut Andrew’s right leg. The wound caught a vital artery that pumps blood back up to the heart from the leg.

“He was drenched in blood. The doctors kept giving him more and more blood but they could not stop the bleeding.”

Andrew’s life was prolonged for twelve hours, and he was pronounced dead on August 4.

His grandma said: “We are not angry and we have reached a point where you realise that revenge and mourning will not make things better for Tina and will not bring Andrew back. We just hope

[the attacker] will be brave, and come forward.”

Andrew’s body is currently at Greenwich Mortuary, and Tina has said she hopes to bury her son at Greenwich Cemetery.

Detective chief inspector Mick Norman, who was investigating the case, said Tina was “holding it together remarkably well”. “She’s a lovely woman,” the officer said.

Tina’s close friend, Victor Owusu, has been helping to care for her, and arrangements are ongoing for a carer to be provided for her.

The fifty-year-old suspect has been bailed until a date in November pending further enquiries. Scotland Yard is still appealing for information.

TOMMIES’ URGENT CARE CENTRE GETS A FACELIFT IN £20M A&E DEVELOPMENT

THE URGENT Care Centre at St Thomas’ Hospital opened last Wednesday after an “extensive refurbishment”, as part of a £20m scheme to rebuild the Emergency Department and create a “dedicated Emergency Floor”.

At the new Urgent Care Centre, patients with less serious conditions will be treated by GPs and emergency nurse practitioners.

The Emergency Department at St Thomas’, one of the busiest in the UK, is being completely rebuilt to ensure that the 140,000 patients it sees each year are cared for “safely and efficiently”.

A “clean, crisp design and artwork”, commissioned by consultants Art In Site and created by a range of artists, is said to help patients navigate their way to the right area more “intuitively”.

A new initial assessment area “enables clinical staff to ‘stream’ patients” needing emergency treatment and those with less serious conditions.

Architects ADP have also created a colourful children’s Emergency Department, which opened in July

2015, and children’s short-stay unit, which is due to open in November 2016.

The artwork has been funded by Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity which provided a grant of just under £250,000 towards the project.

Clinical lead Dr Katherine Henderson said: “Our new facility looks absolutely fantastic – patients will benefit from a brighter, more spacious environment and our staff will find it easier to help patients and seek any support they need from colleagues.

“We have ensured that the architects worked very closely with our staff on every aspect of the redesign – they know what works best for them and for patients.

“Patients were involved in workshops to help us understand what they wanted from the new unit.

For example, they selected the artists we are working with – we really have put our patients at the heart of this project throughout.”

Construction work on the Emergency Floor development started in March 2014 and is due to be completed in 2017.

The next stage of the project will be to redevelop the Major Treatment and Resuscitation Area, where the sickest patients arrive.

Guy’s doctors: Donate organs and save lives

DOCTORS AT Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospitals are urging locals to sign up to the national organ donations register and help save lives.

There were 286 transplants carried out at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust (GSTT) last year. The majority were for kidneys – 169 of which came from deceased donors.

Sally Johnson, director of organ donation and transplantation at NHS Blood and Transplant, said: “With almost all of us prepared to take an organ if we need one, we need to be ready to donate too. Think about what we would want others to do for us if we ever needed a transplant and be prepared to donate.”

Dr Rachel Hilton, consultant nephrologist at GSTT, said: “We have one of the largest kidney transplant programmes in the UK and we’re extremely grateful to the donors and

families across the UK who made these transplants possible.

“The figures published today show that hundreds of people are benefiting from life-saving transplant surgery at Guy’s Hospital but hundreds more are waiting for a suitable donor organ to become available.”

Nursery celebrates ‘outstanding’ rating

IT WAS all fun and laughter at an East Dulwich nursery, after mums and kids gathered to celebrate its ‘outstanding’ Ofsted review.

Gumboots Community Nursery in Crystal Palace Road held the party last week, with Dulwich and West Norwood MP Helen Hayes attending.

After an inspection from the schools’ and children services regulator in May, the little nursery was told it had “exceptionally strong leadership” in the form of manager Carol Fuller.

The report said: “Staff use excellent observation, assessment and planning

systems to support and check children's learning. There is a strong focus on children's interests, achievements and what they need to learn next.

“Children rapidly learn to take responsibility for their personal care. Staff are excellent examples in helping children to develop good manners, social skills and independence.”

A spokeswoman for the nursery, which is run by LEYF Nurseries, said: “‘Outstanding’ ratings are an impressive achievement at the best of time, especially so when a nursery is going through such a transition period. Their last inspection was also an ‘Outstanding’ but we’re very proud they managed to hold on to that while there was so much going on.”

BOROUGH’S ST George the Martyr church will “attempt a peal” on their bells on Friday, in memory of Rifleman Christopher Henry Hughes, who died in the Battle of the Somme one hundred years ago.

The ringing will last for around four hours to honour Hughes, who used to be a bell ringer at the church, having completed 45 peals at the time of his death.

The Priest-in-Charge of St George the Martyr, Jonathan Sedgwick, said: "It has been a pleasure to be able to continue to honour the memory of Rifleman Christopher Henry Hughes on the centenary of his death.

“It is of the utmost important that we pay tribute to our fallen soldiers who left their communities and families behind to fight on foreign fields.

“Bell ringing continues to be an important part of our church's life and our ringers are delighted to be able to recognise the sacrifice made

Hughes was born in Elephant and Castle and was a member of the King’s Royal Rifle Corps, Second Battalion, and was killed on September 9 1916, aged 30.

The “Maritime Autonomy Surface Testbed” (MAST) is based on the Bladerunner hull shape and is allowing the MoD to “test and evolve tactics for employing maritime autonomous systems”.

MAST is a unique UK designed and built craft capable of reaching high speeds, on which autonomy can be investigated.

The craft is designed to operate autonomously in an unmanned mode, sensing other vessels in the immediate vicinity and avoiding them in a safe manner.

The avoidance algorithms are designed to comply with internationally mandated collision regulations.

When operating on a busy waterway

(such as the Thames), the craft is operated with a coxswain on board ready to take control.

It does not carry weapons, but is designed to explore autonomous capabilities and support non-lethal surveillance and reconnaissance roles.

Admiral Sir Philip Jones, First Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Staff, said: “Unmanned maritime systems will change how we operate, but they’re just the start.

“Our pursuit of new technologies and ideas – from big data to 3Dprinting – will ensure we remain one of the most capable and successful navies in the world.”

Man to walk 100km after beating cancer

A BERMONDSEY man is walking one hundred kilometres this weekend to raise money for charity and celebrate his return to health after beating tongue cancer.

Ignaty Dyakov, 32, will walk from London to Henley over 24 hours as part of the Thames Path Ultra Challenge, a year after he was diagnosed and treated at Guy’s Hospital.

The money Ignaty raises will go to Dimbleby Cancer Care, which is in its 50th year after being set up in memory of the famous broadcaster, Richard Dimbleby.

Having received all-clear scan result in March, Ignaty said: “Throughout my treatment the charity kindly offered me the support of its services which included several sessions of reflexology, stress management training and a pillow to rest my head on.

“Most importantly was the moral support its team gave me – this was a massive boost to me getting through this journey.

“I decided to undertake this challenge not only because I want to give back to them for what they’ve done for me, but also to prove to myself personally that I am back to normal and that my stamina is as it used to be before cancer.”

Robin Pritchard, Director at Dimbleby Cancer Care, added: “After everything that Ignaty has been through the last year it is so inspiring to see him take on this challenge for us. We wish him the best of luck.”

All the money raised will go towards the charity’s Care for the Future appeal, which aims to raise £500,000 by the end of 2016 so that it can continue and expand its work within the cancer community.

A HOUSING association has come under fire for leaving a huge plot of land in Queen’s Road, Peckham empty – nine years after a housing estate was demolished.

Notting Hill Housing was given planning permission in 2013 to rebuild 333 flats on the former Wood Dene Estate, next to the Acorn Estate.

The association’s website states the giant “eyesore” of land was meant to be newly rebuilt and ready for new tenants in 2017, but little has changed since the block came down.

Michael Bukola, the Lib Dem candidate for the Camberwell and Peckham parliamentary constituency, told the News: “I was decanted from the Wood Dene Estate in 2006 before it had to be demolished. I lived here as a tenant for 21 years. There was a strong sense of community there.

“One can’t underestimate the frustration that’s felt as a result of this. It’s an eye-sore. And because there’s no housing and it’s also poorly lit, it is dangerous for young families.

“I’m still in touch with people who lived there. Some are desperate to move back to the area where their roots are strong. They also want to pay respects to Zainab Kalokoh, who was murdered on the estate in 2006. People want some kind of permanent memorial here to remember her by.”

A Notting Hill Housing spokesman said a new target has been set to complete the development by 2019.

“Enabling works to construct a new energy centre and sub stations have been ongoing on site for the last

“These enabling works are now complete and the main contractor has been on site since last week to begin construction of the new homes, which will complete in 2019.”

The site was sold by Southwark Council to Presentation Housing before its demolition. At the time, the council was run by a Liberal Democrat and Conservative coalition, while Michael was a

councillor.

by Notting Hill following the economic crash of 2008 and 2009.

Michael now says that although the original plans were made by his own party, for which he was a councillor, the current Labour-run council also have a responsibility to ensure the homes are delivered.

The practising nurse also said the decision to demolish the Wood Dene Estate was taken because it had

“fallen into disrepair” and was not fit for purpose.

“People were glad it was being pulled down,” he said.

“There were problems with its design and there was a lot of antisocial behaviour. But I worry people in this part of Peckham will feel taken for granted if they see sites like this left empty for a long time while all the development keeps happening in the north of the borough.”

Cllr Mark Williams, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and new homes said: “The plan to build over 300 homes on the site, including affordable homes, is still moving forward and the developers should be on site in the new year. It has taken longer than we anticipated to work out the complexities of providing a new energy centre on site to provide heating and hot water for the neighbouring Acorn Estate, which had to be in place before building work could begin, but we agreed the contract for that recently and that work is starting imminently.”

The bridge was shut to pedestrians on the Southbank side in the morning when a member of the public alerted emergency services.

Officers and dogs investigated the site and safely removed the bomb, before giving the all clear at 11:45am.

Anthony Schwarz, Sister Cecily’s nephew, said: “Although departed, she remains amongst you, especially in all the lives she touched through her friendship and work.

“Please continue to support the staff at The Bosco Centre as they continue to work with the youth of Bermondsey following Sister’s example and the values of St Don Bosco.”

Around 200 people attended the Sacred Heart mass and cremation in June, with coaches of mourners coming to pay their respects.

Fr David O’Malley, who

conducted the funeral and memorial mass, said in his homily: “Cecily lived out, every day, her deepest desire to see young people come to life, to uncover their potential, to remove the obstacles to their growth.

“That was her vocation: to uncover in each young person the face of God, to help them to see how precious they were, how loveable they always are, whatever mess they get themselves into.”

Mass will be offered for The People of Bermondsey at St Peter and The Guardian Angels on behalf of the family of Sister Cecily Dunn on Sunday, September 18 at 9am.

VEOLIA SOUTHWARK’S ‘Wonder Day’ will return next Saturday, September 17, allowing residents a sneak peek inside the borough’s recycling centre.

The day takes place at the Southwark Integrated Waste Management Facility near Old Kent Road, which was built to deal with over 200,000 tonnes of waste annually.

All black bag waste from the borough is brought to the facility and turned into a low carbon fuel, which provides energy to the National Grid, and heating for around 2,500 Southwark homes.

Tours of the facility take place throughout the day to give residents insight into how waste can be a resource to build a sustainable future.

Held for the past six years, Sheila Woolgar, 69, who received the all clear for breast cancer three years ago, will offer a raffle, sale table, cakes, tea and coffee.

Everyone is welcome to attend from 11am onwards, with this year being in memory of Sheila’s friend of 40 years, Barry O’Neill.

Sheila said: “This year I am doing it in memory of my friend who passed away not long ago. I knew Barry for forty years and he received a lot of support from Macmillan.

“Fortunately I didn’t need the nurses

when I had cancer. I was very lucky as I went in for my check-up and the doctors found it early.

“I had surgery and a course of medication for five years then I was discharged a couple of years ago. The care at Guy’s was wonderful. I just thought to myself ‘I need to give something back’.

“Most families have someone who is affected by it and seeing it first-hand you think “gosh”. They are there 24/7 and this is the only way they get money.

“It costs £1,000 a week for a nurse so I aim for that much every year, which I managed last year. I have two daughters who help out with my husband since I’m turning 70 next year. It’s a bit of a family affair. A lot of local people get involved and it’s a great morning.”

Where to start and how the system works:

THE DIFFICULTIES faced each year by parents and carers deciding which secondary school to apply to for their child remains the biggest problem in terms of education decisions.

You can’t expect to name a secondary school and assume that your child will automatically be offered a place. It is simply a case of listing the schools you prefer and awaiting the outcome of the allocation process.

In a highly competitive process it is vital that you get the order of preference right on your child’s primary to secondary transfer application.

The biggest mistake you can make is to put just one school down. That might well be the only school you want for your child, but there are no guarantees that your child will be offered this school. To give your child the best chance possible, try to list up to six preferences on their application.

It is all too easy just to go by hearsay and reputations - visit the

schools for yourself. A school that may never have been in your mind before could offer subjects or have specialist facilities that would meet your child’s talents more than the school that was originally top of your list.

There are all types of secondaries, from voluntary aided church schools to academies, foundation schools, free schools and independent secondaries. And it is here where the admission criteria vary. It is important you fully understand the admission criteria and match those criteria to your own circumstances.

Some schools are heavily oversubscribed, with hundreds applying for just 120 – 240 places.

When you go to an open day, make sure you find out how many applications the school usually receives - this information will also be printed in the Starting Secondary school in Southwark 2017/2018 brochure. The more people who apply for a school for their children, the bigger the risk that you might not get in. Armed with this knowledge, you should be better placed to put your preferences down.

You need to be wary about giving six preferences, all of which are

schools that are heavily oversubscribed.

Remember, you need to have a fallback plan. Put your first preference down, but also preferences into which you have a real chance of getting your child. As the local paper, year on year we have seen parents and carers left in the worst possible situation. They have only picked over-subscribed schools and have got into none. They did not have a fallback plan. So, from being in a position where they felt they had the luxury of choice, they were left feeling like they had no option but to accept the school they had been allocated automatically by the local authority.

Applying for secondary schools can be emotionally difficult. It is such a vital decision for your child’s future.

You can of course print a copy of your application to keep and can view the outcome online. The closing date to return forms is October 31, 2016.

“The primary schools play a vital role in primary to secondary transfer,” Southwark Council’s Admission & Benefits Manager Anita Hawksley told the News.

“Primaries support and help inform the parents of Year 6 pupils about the procedure and how to complete their online forms.”

Since so many of Southwark’s secondaries have now become academies, it is vital to check how the admission criteria stand when the school is oversubscribed. Children who have education, health and care plans or full statements of special educational needs are dealt with outside of the transfer process and parents and carers must contact the special educational needs and disabilities team for further advice.

Once you have made your preferences and submitted your online application by the closing date, your application will be processed. If you have successfully submitted your online application before the closing date, you will be

able to view the results of your application on the eAdmissions website (www.eadmissions.org.uk) during the evening of 1 March 2017.

You will also be sent a letter with the results of your application by first class post on 1 March 2017. Your offer letter will contain details about how to accept your offer, placing your child’s name on a waiting list or how to appeal.

If you are not successful with any of your preferences then the school admissions team will allocate your child an alternative secondary school.

This is likely to be the nearest Southwark school to your child’s home which has a vacancy. However, you have the right to appeal for any schools at which you have been refused a place, as well as to put your child on waiting lists.

If you have been offered a secondary school place you have until 15 March 2017 to reject the offer of a place. If the school admissions team do not hear from you by this date, your offer will automatically be accepted and forwarded to the allocated school.

If you do reject the offer and also provide an explanation of any alternative arrangement you have made for your child’s education, your child’s place will be withdrawn and offered to the next child on the school’s waiting list.

ACH SEASON lasts about three months, although there is usually a week or two of overlap as the new weather system becomes established.

September is the start of autumn; it usually remains fine and calm before the weather changes gear. What is always a surprise is how quickly the nights are drawing in as we leave the summer months behind.

September and May are the most productive and spectacular months in the gardening calendar. May sees an explosion of growth with flowering trees, plants and bulbs at the start of the growing season. September brings harvest time with a gradual die back of the annuals and perennials. This overlap means summer perennials are still flowering as seasonal plants such as Autumn crocus, Sedum, Sunflowers and Passiflora come into bloom; fruits are ready to pick, colourful foliage appears as leaves slowly begin to change. September is a beautiful time of year to savour and enjoy, even if the weather turns quickly – which it often does!

Tasks for the month include carrying out repairs to the lawn; usually straight forward requiring grass seed to be sown on bare or worn patches – loosen soil first to ensure that the seeds can be lightly covered and water well. Sow seeds thickly as the birds may be attracted to these areas – but even if they eat some seeds, enough should remain to germinate and grow.

Take cuttings of evergreen shrubs such as Clematis armandii, Choisya, Californian lilac, Fuchsias and Hydrangeas – this will increase stock and any winter damaged plants can be quickly replaced. Divide the established border perennials to ensure healthy, strong plants. Start planting Daffodil and Hyacinth bulbs either in the garden or containers and window boxes.

Plant of the month: Hops (Humulus lupulus). An astonishing perennial climber that knows how to scale heights it can easily reach 6m or more and is invasive if not kept under control. Hop bines can be trained along fences, walls and trellis - the wild birds love hiding amongst the large coarse leaves, which are rough to the touch. Hops produce ‘fruits’ called strobiles, these are pale green, delicate and cone shaped appearing in late August, ripening through September. These ‘fruits’ have a pungent aroma and are used as bitter flavouring in most types of beer. Hops are also used in herbal medicine, principally as a sedative but also as a digestive (always seek advice from a professional before using plants medicinally).

Pub to re-open instead of being turned into flats

New test to help diagnose meningitis

A TEST has been developed that could help to diagnose bacterial infections, including meningitis in minutes.

If made available through the NHS, this test would significantly reduce the time taken to diagnose the disease and minimise the risk of misdiagnosis.

The new test, developed by a team at Imperial College London, is a major breakthrough in the rapid diagnosis of meningitis and sepsis in children.

If made available through the NHS, it could allow treatment to begin much earlier, saving hundreds of lives and reducing the risk of lifechanging after-effects.

The signs and symptoms of meningitis are notoriously difficult to diagnose, and can be dismissed as a cold or flu. Many young children presenting the early symptoms of the disease are initially sent home, before being rushed back to hospital a few hours later as their condition rapidly deteriorates.

Currently, doctors grow bacteria in a sample of blood, in a process which can take up to 48 hours.

The study led by Professor Michael Levin has shown that a bacterial infection can be distinguished from other causes of fever, such as a viral infection, using a pattern of genes that are switched on or off in response to an infection.

A larger project will now begin to develop these findings into a pinprick diagnostic test, which Professor Levin believes could be available through the NHS within five years.

Entertainment of a bygone era

JOHN OSBORNE’S The Entertainer comes with expectations, writes Michael Holland...

In the week that a Polish man has been brutally murdered by radicalised youths in Essex, John Osborne’s The Entertainer opens with the line: ‘Bloody Poles and Irish’. There is further talk of ‘wogs’ and ‘coloureds’ so there is a PostBrexit feel about it, but not for long as this is not a play for today.

Those words are spoken by Billy Rice, a retired music hall man who now spends his life moaning and wanting a return to his ‘good old days’ instead of following his son Archie Rice as he tours his own seedy song, dance and old gag show around, all the while trying to keep ahead of the taxman.

Kenneth Branagh is Archie Rice who can do nothing else but get on stage and try to give his act have more of a life than the 1950s wants it to have. He introduces ‘nudes’ but his old jokes are always going to be the death knell for him. We feel his pain as he works his tired, homophobic, racist, sexist routine on us.

his second wife Phoebe, son Frank and father Billy, we gradually get to see the problems within the family: son Mick is off in Suez with the army, Frank and daughter Jean are against the war and their granddad Billy is fed up of Britain getting ‘pushed around by anyone’. Add to that Archie and Phoebe sleep in separate rooms, he has affairs, Jean has broken off her engagement and they all drink too much.

Even though Branagh’s Archie Rice outshines everyone, all involved put in excellent performances to make him look so good. Greta Scacchi channels an Eastenders matriarch as Phoebe, while Gawn Grainger brings Del Boy’s granddad back to life.

For me, though, The Entertainer cannot be timeless for an audience who have no clue about Suez, or who have never seen a non-PC stand up comedian. The nervous laughter that popped up in parts of the theatre highlighted that they just didn’t get that jokes about ‘the wife’ were once the norm, that there were comics before Ben Elton and his ilk.

Plus, the show scenes seemed to continue right into the family scenes, with Archie always wanting to be ‘on’ when there was much more

Britain was in the middle of the Suez Crisis and its people were divided as to what to do next: go to war or negotiate. Military force and back door skullduggery was the choice of our Prime Minister Anthony Eden but the US pulled rank and told us to stop, so we sloped off with our tail between our legs.

Britain embarrassed itself in full frontal shame to the world and John Osborne coupled that with the dying variety shows and a marriage in freefall. That info is in the programme if you have time ormotivation to read it before the curtain goes up.

All in all, The Entertainer is a good show that comes with expectations; you are expected to understand the context of 1956 Britain. Without that it seems dated.

Britten, a life-long pacifist, was reviled for his objections to war which led him in 1940 to follow Auden to Brooklyn and live in exile with like-minded artists.

Due to his political ideals when the US was gearing up for war, and the UK was already fighting Germany, the media was hostile to him and his work, so to live in a haven that sheltered him from the horrors of the world outside helped him continue with his work, though when his Sinfonia da Requiem premiered in 1941 it was slated. The backstory has all the ingredients for an exciting, revealing play.

Britten in Brooklyn tells what the writer thinks happened in that decaying brownstone house on Middagh Street for that brief two years, but, alas, left me feeling nothing. I got more from the programme notes than what I got from the stage. The two British men try to justify their stance, but I wasn’t buying it; Auden tries to get Britten to be more open about his sexuality, but this is a process that would have taken months and Lewis attempts it in a few lines. I couldn’t buy

an outpouring of memories – some tender, some comic, and others painful and raw.

Foley art and stark verbatim text meet Alex Groves' expansive electronic music to create this bold new production which gets right to the core of family life. Ovalhouse, 6th – 10th September, 7.30pm, £8-£13.

Vinegar and Vanity Vinegar and Vanity is a camp musical comedy starring the formidable talents of two of London’s top drag vocalists. Vinegar Strokes dreams of

We see them drinking and talking about who they have slept with, then drinking and talking about their work, then more drinking and a symphony magically appears from this oral orgy of supposed iniquity. Too much information is crammed in here and eventually we see nothing.

Yes, Ryan Sampson does a good Britten, though did need a lot more of Britten’s gay guilt and repression to come through; John Hollingsworth was a good enough Auden, and Ruby Bentall and Sadie Frost as McCullers and Lee respectively did a job of delivering lines too. My favourite character, though, was David Burnett as a menacing John, there to summons Britten back to England, but sadly he was just a brief addition to the monotony.

I would like to hope that the cast settles in to their characters and be more the people they are playing, but it could be the script that needs more time; other than a few good one-liners this felt like a first draft of what could be an excellent play.

A Fabaret The official after show party for drag action musical Heels of Glory, the headliner at this year’s London Pride Festival. One of the elements that characterised the show and made it unique was both the creative team and actors all have strong roots in the vibrant UK Cabaret Scene. The whole team had such a wonderful experience on the musical they wanted to reunite and collaborate again, but this time performing in their own unique and diverse cabaret styles. It’s fast – it’s alive – it’s already dead. Punkplay is a riot of a play told at breakneck pace with a killer soundtrack. It’s a coming-of-age story about subcultures, friendship and notfitting-in – all on rollerskates. Southwark Playhouse, 7th September – 1st October, 8pm, £12 - £20.

The Greater Game East London football club Leyton Orient, then known as Clapton Orient, was the first team to sign up its players, staff and supporters to fight in the Great War. 41 men volunteered in all.

Three of them never returned. Based on the book ‘They Took The Lead’ by Stephen Jenkins, this new play of love, friendship and loss tells both sides of the story from the flag waving patriotism to the conscientious objectors. Southwark Playhouse, 15th September – 15th October, 7.30pm, £12 - £20.

THERE’S A FAMILIAR narrative that goes along with all of the up-and-coming areas of London we so often hear about today: that places like Peckham, Walworth and Bermondsey were all terrifically poor, with little going for them. But few know that 180 years ago, Southwark boasted Britain’s best zoo, writes Owen Sheppard...

Some of the oldest parts of the borough, like Walworth and Newington are even mentioned William the Conqueror’s Domesday Book of 1086. But you can go back a life time – some eighty years – to find the days of one cultural nadir: when Walworth and Elephant and Castle had theatres and picture houses to rival the West End. By contrast, Authors like James Abercrombie described the Newington Butts in 1789 as a place where grapes, peaches and nectarines would grow, and Walworth Gardens (now Sutherland Square) was a place to among tulip fields.

Yet more baffling today, is the thought that little Pasley Park down Penrose Street was once a place to see the British Empire’s most dazzling spoils it could bring home.

Royal Surrey Zoological Gardens first arrived at (formerly) Lorrimore Park in 1831, having been established

by Edward Cross. Mr Cross was a famous proprietor of the time, and also owned another, smaller zoo, The Menagerie in The Strand.

It opened three years after London Zoo in Regent’s Park. Yet by all accounts at the time, it was the far superior destination for anyone wanting to spoil their child with an otherworldly sight.

It had not just lions, but tigers, reindeer, elephants and llamas. Tots could take a ride on the bulbous back of a giant Galapagos tortoises, and the zoo featured Britain’s first ever giraffe enclosure - a small family of five.

‘animal welfare’ was as well-known as Wi-Fi – many of these incredible creatures were caged. But more terrific was the 100-metre wide glass dome – like building that covered: a precursor to the ever famous Crystal Palace.

Then came the famous patrons who gave the zoo its Royal title. Queen Victoria was said to have visited in 1848 with Prince Albert and their children. But they were but a handful of the 8,000 who marvelled through the gardens each day. Historian Mary Boast write in The Story of Walworth (1976) that Her Majesty was

particularly taken by a friendship she observed between a tigresses and a humble hound.

John Whelan, Walworth Society member and history enthusiast called Pasley “a little park with a big history” where 170 animal species could be found.

“Now two stone statues of ostriches remind people of some of these exotic animals,” he said.

But sadly, the great Zoological Gardens only stayed in town for 25 years, and closed in 1856, not long after Mr Cross died.

nspired by the gluttonous lifestyle of the Centzon Totochtin, the offspring of the Aztec Goddess of Alcohol and the God that discovered fermentation, Four Hundred Rabbits in Nunhead boasts a wide array of craft beer and homemade pizza, writes Alex Yeates...

Its second restaurant after a successful launch in Crystal Palace, the eatery prides itself on being a place for friends and family to meet, eat, drink and have fun. Demand for their specially kneaded dough has boomed so much so that they now offer the opportunity for people to take away and order on Deliveroo.

To kick things off and ease into the experience Charlotte and I

ordered a round of Bermondsey’s own Fourpure beer, olives and the aptly-named Beer Sticks. The olives, marinated well, went down a treat, doing well to inspire the spirit of Italy.

The Beer Sticks, made from pepperoni, initially disappointed as we only had one each, but we were soon satisfied as each bite exposed a familiar spice and chew that was filling to the end. They accompanied the beers perfectly and encouraged us to relax for the weekend ahead.

As quick as our beers were drained, our pizzas turned up only seven minutes from being ordered.

Baked in a large pizza oven in the middle of the restaurant, passers-by peered in enviously as we picked up our first slices. Opting for an

Iberico Chorizo and Pickled Chilli topping, the intense texture that went into each beautiful bite led to the second round of beer. This time, weighing in at six and a half per cent, the Pressure Drop.

With a distinct tang, the Pressure Drop proved a tasty companion to our pizzas. Charlotte’s decision to feast on the vegetarian Piquillo Peppers and Goats Cheese pizza meant we both had the chance to experience different sides of what they had to offer.

What struck us the most, above the great toppings, was how good the dough and tomato sauce was.

Often bland, this dough was moreish along with the very fresh tomato. They contributed to a solid foundation that was not too thin or

thick, nor too crunchy or chewy.

It was the goldilocks of pizza dough.

The plates left our table clean and attention turned to the dessert menu. To cool off from the chilli and chorizo onslaught, scoops of hazelnut and blueberry ice cream were ordered for me, and scoops of coconut and salted caramel for Charlotte.

As our sweet tooth was seen to and our beers finished, we were happy to reflect on a lovely evening. Not too busy and not too quiet, Four Hundred Rabbits does well striking a balance between different ingredients and atmosphere, and excelling where others fall short with their special attention to detail.

On Saturday the Pink and Blues travelled to Sussex in the first qualifying round of the competition and they defeated their Bognor Regis based opponents 3-0.

Patterson double title tilt

PECKHAM TO WEMBLEY THROUGH JACK PETCHEY FOUNDATION

Young people from Peckham given tour of New Wembley

ON FRIDAY 12th August 2016, 15 young people from Millwall’s Premier League Kicks session at the Damilola Taylor Centre, otherwise known as DTC in Peckham, were treated to a day out in North London for a tour of the home of English football, Wembley Stadium.

The tour was funded by through the Jack Petchey Foundation Achievement Award. The award which is named after Jack Petchey who is a businessman raised in the East End of London. After leaving the Navy after the Second World War Jack started a taxi business.

He went on to become a multimillionaire through his various business ventures, which have spanned from motor car dealing and garages to property, travel and investment. Since establishing the Jack Petchey Foundation in 1999, his businesses have given £100 million to support youth projects.

15 London and Essex based Club Community Organisations were

approved to join the Jack Petchey Foundation Bronze Achievement Award scheme as part of the Premier League Kicks programme. The scheme is a reward and recognition initiative which enables youth organisations to celebrate the achievements of their young people as well as receive additional funding.

Participating Premier League Kicks projects, including Millwall, select three awards per year to a young person to receive an Achievement Award. The selected winners, to be chosen by their fellow young people were awarded £250 to be spent on a something of their choice that will benefit their programme.

Glenn Annang, aged 16, was the most recent young people to win the award and after discussions with his fellow players at the DTC, they decided on a tour of Wembley Stadium, going behind the scenes at one of the most famous stadiums in the world. A tour consists of access to

Wembley's historical treasures such as the 1966 World Cup crossbar, the Jules Rimet Trophy commemorating England's World Cup glory, the original flag from London's 1948 Olympic Games and a replica representation of The Emirates FA Cup. Premier League Kicks began in 2006 as a pilot project in London between the Premier League and the Metropolitan Police, with the aim of using football to bring communities together and engage with young people. Millwall began running their Kicks programme in January 2007 being one of the first community clubs to run the piloted programme with the Damilola Taylor Centre being one of Millwall’s first ever venues.

The session still runs today being a very popular provision for the young people of Peckham.

Millwall Premier League Kicks coach Richard Amponsah who has been a coach at the session since 2010 said of the day ‘The tour was a fabulous opportunity for the

young people to visit the Home of English Football. This trip enabled these young people the opportunity to venture out of their comfort zone. This is due unfortunately to the fact that many haven't visited a football stadium, let alone leave their local area. The highlight for me was approaching Wembley Park Station and hearing the young people shout "Wembley Stadium, oh my gosh, Wembley Stadium". The reality of the situation struck home’.

Oreofe Bello, a 13 year old who attends the DTC session described what the day meant to him: ‘It was a good day, a nice experience. I enjoyed the whole tour but mostly sitting in the dugout, so close to the pitch. What impacted me the most was feeling like a professional footballer when approaching the stadium, going to the changing room and walking through the tunnel.’

Millwall’s Premier League Kicks co-ordinator Gary Otim commented: Firstly, we would like

to make a point of thanking the Premier League and the Jack Petchey Foundation for approving us of the Foundation Bronze Achievement Award scheme. The scheme enables us to celebrate the achievements of young people.

Furthermore, it gives young people some responsibility as they are given the responsibility of deciding what the money they’ve been awarded gets spent on. Kicks has been running at DTC for roughly 9 years now and is still as popular as ever with the young people in the area which we are really proud of. The young people chose a trip to Wembley for a stadium tour which we felt would be a wonderful day out during their six week summer holiday. It gave some of our young people who may not get the opportunity to regularly venture out of their area to broaden their horizons. We also saw it as a great chance for coaches and young people to bond. All in all a great day for our young people.

Joe Martin celebrates his goal

BRADFORD FANS must be sick of the sight of Joe Martin.

There were 499 of them at The Den on Saturday to see the 27-year-old left-back score his fourth goal for Millwall and his second in two games against the Bantams after his free-kick at Valley Parade in May’s play-off semi-final.

It was all the more remarkable that it was Martin who dragged the Lions level after he hadn’t been able to train for most of the week after injuring his shoulder against Chesterfield seven days earlier.

His manager Neil Harris said he had done the “bare minimum” in Friday’s training session but was determined to play with Shane Ferguson away on international duty and injuries keeping a number of players out.

Perhaps it was no surprise then that Martin struggled to contain Mark Marshall, the tricky attacker playing on the right side of Bradford’s attack.

Along with his goal, Martin picked up

the sixteenth yellow card of his Millwall career when Marshall was too quick for him when he flicked the ball away and was caught by the defender’s late tackle.

Marshall also set up his side’s goal when his low cross in the 42nd minute was turned into his own net by Byron Webster.

Earlier, Jordan Archer was at full stretch to keep out Nicky Law’s header as Bradford threatened to end Millwall’s eleven-game unbeaten run at home in League One. This was the fifth meeting of Bradford and Millwall in less than a year but you could hardly say it was a case of familiarity breeding contempt: There were only eight of the 22 that started the second leg of that semi-final tie in May in the starting line-ups on Saturday.

The Lions’ injury problems – Lee Gregory wasn’t in the squad – meant there was a place on the matchday bench for the first time for Harry Smith, who had scored two goals in his last two games for Millwall U23s.

Romain Vincelot, continuing in his less favoured position in the centre of defence.

Millwall had much less possession but then this team’s speciality is soaking up pressure before hitting the opposition on the break.

Neil Harris’ players eventually disrupted their opponents’ fluid style and the game became an end-to-end thriller in the second half with both sides having chances to win it.

It was Vincelot’s header away from his own box in the 49th minute that gave Martin his opportunity, and he accepted it in emphatic fashion when he struck a fierce drive that belied any sense of a weaker right foot and the ball was in the back of the net with Colin Doyle style in mid-dive.

The last time Millwall had lost at home to Bradford was on their way to winning the old Division Two title in 1988, and it seemed they would extend that record with a win on Saturday.

Harris introduced Fred Onyedinma for Gregg Wylde – who had showed plenty of promise on his first league start but

maybe could do with more work on his final product – and the young attacker had a couple of chances to grab a winner.

First he put a difficult header wide and minutes later he was sprinting into the box and about to shoot but Stephen Darby appeared from nowhere to make a last-ditch tackle.

Darby was fortunate to see the ball fly over his own crossbar from Shaun Williams’ cross before Law had a glorious chance to win it for Stuart McCall’s side with the last kick of the game.

Mahlon Romeo won’t want to see the incident again where he attempted to hook the ball clear in added time only to see it land in his own box and eventually at the feet of Bradford’s most technically gifted player, Law. It would have been harsh on the Lions to have lost it then, and no doubt Romeo would have thanked Archer afterwards for getting a fingertip to the ball to divert it onto the post before the goalkeeper pounced on the rebound to preserve Millwall’s unbeaten home run.

IF JORDAN Archer wanted to make a statement that his mind is fully back on the job, then last Saturday’s performance against Bradford was a pretty emphatic one and a reminder of why he was voted Millwall’s player of the year last season.

There was a suspicion that Archer’s shakiness early in this campaign could be linked to the unsigned contract sitting on a table somewhere at the club with growing concerns among fans he was considering his Millwall future.

He was beaten seven times in two away league games and though not at fault for all of them it wouldn’t have taken a forensic examination of his performances to conclude the tally should have been nowhere near as high.

Neil Harris suggested negotiations over a new deal were a distraction but any doubts about his commitment to the club were ended when he penned a new threeyear deal last week.

And as if like clockwork he was back to his commanding best last weekend and adorned an assured performance with a couple of sublime moments.

He would probably expect to make the kind of save he pulled off to keep out Nicky Law’s effort in the first half, when he got across his goal quickly to push

away the midfielder’s powerful header for a corner.

But arguably only a handful of goalkeepers if any in League One would have had the ability to deny Law in injury-time when the midfielder’s carefully placed shot looked destined for the bottom corner of the goal. It was all the more impressive given how quickly Archer had to adjust his mindset when it seemed Mahlon Romeo had things under control only to carelessly lob the ball into the box to present Bradford with the chance to win at Millwall for the first time since 1988.

Archer would have had little time to think as Law tried to curl the ball outside his reach, and it was pure instinct and agility that meant he was able to get a fingertip to it to deflect it onto the post and then react to dive on the rebound.

Whether he was worried by the outcome of discussions between his representatives and the club, Archer insists it was his intention to sign a new deal with Millwall and that it was just a matter of thrashing out the details of an improved contract.

“I’ve always said that I wanted to stay here, it’s a great club and the fans have taken to me,” Archer said. “We’ve got quality players coming through so the next few years will be an exciting time.

“When I found out a new deal was being offered I was delighted but, the way football works, I’ve got my party (negotiating with) theirs and as soon as

they reached that agreement I was excited and I was happy to put pen to paper.”

Perhaps Archer’s patchy form in August was somewhat inevitable, given that in the space of twelve months he had to adjust from being a player of whom little was expected other than to learn from David Forde before maybe getting a chance in cup games, to being the number one goalkeeper at the club with all the extra pressure and expectation that brings.

Archer admits there is something in that theory, but he also always believed he had the talent to catch Harris’ attention.

“Yes and no,” he said when asked if he expected his rise to be so quick. “I’ve always backed myself and once an opportunity came I backed myself to take it. I didn’t think it would come so soon with having Fordey in front of me, he was the established number one and an international at the time as well.

“I knew sooner rather than later I’d get my opportunity and as soon as I did I’d take it.”

Now it’s Archer who is the target for Tom King, the 21-year-old goalkeeper who made his first-team debut this season. Archer says King is “a great keeper and he’ll have a great future in the game” but he insists he is only focused on his own improvement.

He also relies on the experience and advice of Kevin Pressman, the Lions goalkeeping coach who kept his spirits

up last season when he lost his pace in the side to Forde.

“Ever since the first day I came in he’s made me feel welcome,” Archer said.

“There have been ups and downs the last eighteen months I’ve been here and he’s helped me through them all. When I was dropped he was talking me through all his experiences and without that I’m not sure I’d be where I am now.

“Kevin’s been there and he’s had a great career himself. A goalkeeping coach who has played can pass on their experiences.”

Archer is still only 23 but is now considered one of the leaders in a Millwall side that is expected to seriously challenge for a top-two place this season.

He says it still hurts to think of May’s play-off final defeat to Barnsley but he is certain they have the right mix to go one better this season. “We’ve got a great bunch of young players, a great academy.

Young players play without fear and that does help.

“At the same time we’ve got great experience with the likes of Tony Craig and Steve Morison, who help keep us in line. When we do well they make sure we don’t get too over-excited and when we have bad games they pick us up.

“It was upsetting not to go up in the play-off final, that wasn’t one of my best games, but I’m going to push on and work harder than last year and hopefully speaking to you this time next year we’ll be in the Championship.”

Morison up for League One gong

STEVE MORISON has been nominated for the Sky Bet League One player of the month award for August.

The 33-year-old striker scored four goals in five league games during the month, including the last-minute winning penalty against Sheffield United and two at Chesterfield to help ensure a 3-1 win.

The other nominees are Josh Morris, the Scunthorpe midfielder, Port Vale’s 20-yearold defender Nathan Smith, and Bolton captain Jay Spearing.

Phil Parkinson, Justin Edinburgh, Stuart McCall and Graham Alexander have been nominated for the manager award.

The winner will be announced on Friday morning.

MILLWALL WINGER Gregg Wylde will continue to work hard to try to stay in Neil Harris’ team and impress “ruthless” Lions fans.

Wylde made his full league debut for Millwall last weekend in the 1-1 draw with Bradford and was warmly applauded off by supporters who recognised his endeavour.

The 25-year-old winger admitted to some nerves before kick-off, but having experienced five Old Firm derbies, including one in a League Cup final at Hamden Park, The Den doesn’t hold too much fear for him.

“When you’re playing you don’t really think about it,” Wylde said. “I’d heard a lot of people talking about how they’re quite ruthless. They’re passionate about their team but I don’t really hear that when I’m playing.

“Obviously we didn’t get the result we wanted. There were a wee bit of nerves but I always get nervous before games.”

Wylde got a taste of what it was like to face Millwall when he was in the Plymouth side in their 5-3 defeat to the Lions in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy last November.

He admitted he was struck by how hard Harris’ players worked in that game, and there has been another challenge for him to adjust to his new side’s tactical approach.

Wylde explained: “My last couple of clubs we played a 4-3-3 with two wingers staying high and one player through the middle. Coming here it’s a straight 4-4-2 and you have to work your socks off to get up and down the

park, that’s something I need to improve about my game.

“I spoke to the gaffer about it and he said I’ve done well so far and learnt quickly. He speaks to me about it on the training field as well.

“I saw it when I was at Plymouth when we played them in the cup, his team worked really hard. I came here and he said you’re going to do the same as what you’ve seen and I’ve done that so far.

“We have a lot of video meetings as well as work on the training ground. It

helps me, I’m still quite young and learning the game.”

Wylde took advantage of the first mini-break the squad have had this season when he went back to Glasgow last weekend to visit his family and friends.

His focus is fully on retaining his place in Millwall’s starting XI this weekend, but he says he will have an eye on an important fixture at midday on Saturday: The first Old Firm derby in the league since April 2012.

Despite having regularly played in

front of more than 50,000 people and experiencing European football, Wylde understands the basic demands are the same no matter what the occasion.

“When I was home on Saturday you could feel the build-up, people are talking about it,” Wylde said.

“It’s the same, every fan expects you to work hard and try to win every game. I’ve played in big games in my career so it’s the same coming here and I’m going to keep on doing what I’m doing.”

Millwall look set to deepen Coventry City’s Blues

MILLWALL LOST twice in the league to Coventry last season, but it’s a case of role reversal when the two sides meet again this Saturday.

It was just over a year ago that the Sky Blues handed the Lions a severe reality check with a 4-0 demolition at The Den, the first of four successive home defeats in the league for Millwall.

It’s a much different story this time around. Millwall are unbeaten in twelve League One games at home and when Coventry visit south London on Saturday they will do so already contemplating a potential relegation battle.

weekend. Seven of that matchday squad have since left the club either permanently or on loan.

Only Rochdale are below Coventry in the league and another defeat would heap even more pressure on manager Tony Mowbray. His side, who looked so dangerous with Adam Armstrong now on loan at Barnsley, - at the point of their attack last season, have scored just two league goals in six league games.

A 6-1 drubbing at Norwich in the EFL Cup showed their defensive weaknesses, but striker Marcus Tudgay was remaining positive after last Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Fleetwood.

He said: “I don’t think confidence is low. I think the strikers are clutching and snatching at things that are easy enough to side foot into the corner of the net. I just don’t think it’s falling right.

“We have got some good strikers here and I think that once we get a goal they will come flooding. We have to keep going, keep believing and sticking together and go again at Millwall on Saturday.”

Mowbray will hope the acquisition of Andre Wright, who played against Millwall for West Brom U23s in the EFL Trophy, will help ease their goalscoring worries.

Harris was hopeful Gregory would be able to train on Thursday, but won’t risk the striker, who has gone off injured in two of the four games he has played this season, if he isn’t fully fit.

Joe Martin, who played last weekend despite shoulder pain, should be okay to start, while Shane Ferguson and Jimmy Abdou have returned after international duty to boost midfield options.

Calum Butcher is also in line for a place in the side. Meanwhile, Shaun Cummings is back in full training, but Shaun Hutchinson has yet to re-join the first-team group as he continues to recover from a hamstring problem.

TRACTOR BOYS HAVE TOO MUCH POWER

MILLWALL’S U23 side suffered a fourth successive defeat when they lost 2-1 to Ipswich Town on Monday afternoon.

The Lions faced a strong Ipswich side that featured former Republic of Ireland international striker Leon Best.

Harry Smith went close to giving the Lions the lead before Best gave the home side the lead.

Substitute Shane McLoughlin doubled the Tractor Boys’ lead before Noel Leighton pulled a goal back with ten minutes left.

And Millwall thought they had levelled only for Smith to see a second effort cleared off the line late on.

NEIL HARRIS has admitted Andy Ambler was sometimes “unpopular” but says the outgoing Millwall chief executive was “key” to

Ambler is leaving Millwall to become head of professional games relations with the FA, with Southend’s Steve Kavanagh replacing him as CEO. Harris left Millwall to join boyhood club Southend on a three-year deal in 2011, but two years into his last contract as a professional footballer the Shrimpers aggreed to terminate the contract early, so he could return to south London to start his coaching career.

Harris revealed that it was always planned with Ambler and chairman, John

Berylson, that he would begin his coaching career with the Lions after he had hung up his boots.

The club’s record goal-scorer initially joined as U21 manager, before two caretaker spells in charge of the first team preceded his appointment on a permanent basis in April 2015.

Harris said he kept in touch with board members at Millwall during his spell with Southend, and he praised Ambler for the support he has given him.

“Andy was key,” Harris said. “I always stayed in contact with John and with Andy.

“It was agreed with them that when I went to Southend it was to finish my career as a footballer with the opportunity

to play with my hometown club.

“But I was always going to come back here to work. John and I made a mutual promise between us that that would be the case. That was always going to be honoured by me and the board.

“Andy was very influential in making that happen, agreeing an early release from my contract and bringing me back.

“The working relationship with Andy for three-and-a-half years has always been strong.

“He’s the man that says yes and he’s the man that says no. He can be unpopular at times and he understands that, we all understand that with the position he holds. But he’s a really good man and he’s been great for me.”

Cummings has been out since February when he had an operation to repair cartilage damage in his knee that was also causing some knock-on effects with his calf and hamstring.

Defender Cummings, 27, last played competitively in the second leg of the JPT semi-final against Oxford on February 2.

“Shaun Cummings is back in full training,” Millwall manager Neil Harris said. “We’re hoping he’ll be able to get some minutes on Monday with the U23s.

“We’re still looking at a good four weeks fitness-wise before he’s back with the first team.

“It’s great to have him back involved, it’s been a long road for him. He’s a brilliant professional and a great guy and it’s certainly nice to have him back.”

Meanwhile Shaun Hutchinson, who has seen just three minutes of competitive action since his switch from Fulham in the summer after suffering a problem with his hamstring, could be available again before the end of the month.

Harris said: “It’s the nature of the small tear he had that he can work at 50 per cent quite often but we can’t push him.

With Hutch, there’s no chance for Saturday but we might be looking at him being involved at Southend (on September 17) or maybe realistically the week after.”
