Council places planning restrictions, to prevent railway arches being converted into homes

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL has placed planning restrictions on shops beneath miles of railway arches, to stop them being turned into housing after a warehouse in Walworth attempted to do so.

Under old rules, shops under railway arches could have been turned into homes through “permitted development right” without needing to apply for planning permission.

But after a warehouse underneath some railway arches planned on doing so, the council used an Article 4 Direction to stop them in their tracks.

The change will mean that shops, offices, storage and betting offices currently trading out of more than 800 arches around Southwark cannot be developed into homes without permission.

OUTHWARK COUNCIL is right to put paid to a plan to convert railway arches into housing - is there nowhere in the capital that isn’t fair game for property development?

In fairness, the local authority hasn’t said no, but rather it has amended planning legislation that would allow conversion of arches into property without seeking planning permission.

Far better that a close eye is kept on more than 800 arches around the borough, which currently house businesses and workshops.

The capital’s housing crisis is THE issue the new mayor must try to tackle, before London loses its soul entirely.

You can’t blame individual property owners for trying to make a profit out of the situation, but it’s an indication of the increasing desperation of many in London to find affordable accommodation that a plan to create homes under a railway track can even be considered.

TfL’s advice - don’t go near there!

HENEVER TFL say they’ve been working hard to minimize traffic disruption - any sensible traveller across town heads in the opposite direction.

And so it is with the decision to close Tower Bridge for work, just as Tooley Street has been closed in one direction and with continuing disruption around London Bridge due to the Shard.

TfL said this week that they had been working with the City of London to ‘ensure that Londoners have the travel advice they need’ and then added that their advice was to plan an alternative route or allow more time for your journey.

Enough said really. Traffic chaos, so avoid the area, is all they’re really advising.

Barry’s much missed

T’S BEEN a year this week since Bermondsey funeral director Barry Albin-Dyer passed away and he is much missed.

Barry was the man who singlehandedly saved this newspaper from closure back in the 1990s and was an ever-present source of advice and support. But he was so much to so many people in the community - not just to us here.

There will be many who thought of him this week, and no doubt reflected on how he was truly one of Bermondsey’s finest.

Unknown artist’s tribute to Ali

THE LATE, legendary US boxer Muhammed Ali has been added to a mural graffitied onto the GX Gallery in Denmark Hill by

an unknown artist.

The depiction of Ali, whose death was announced on Saturday morning, is blended with a purple and multi-coloured tribute to musician Prince, painted after the celebrated pop star died

unexpectedly on April 21.

A member of staff from the GX Gallery said they believe the painting was finished on Sunday after it had closed.

“We have no idea who the artist was who did this, but we would love

to track them down,” the member of staff said.

“We think it’s great and we welcome it, we certainly wouldn’t want to take it down. It’s exciting that the wall keeps changing when we don’t expect it to.”

The George Inn in Borough High Street served the sweet-tooth settling desserts in a one-day tasting session last week.

The George Inn general manager, Kathryn Harvey, said: “In our experience London foodies have always been adventurous in their tastes, so with ten varieties of hot dogs and burgers, we’re sure to have something to suit everyone’s tastes.

“For those really keen to test their taste buds we’ve created these new exclusive savoury ice creams, with an extra reward for those who dare to dine.”

Guests were also given the option of quaffing complimentary Prosecco to wash down their treats The unusual flavours were created by ice cream aficionados Beechdean Dairies.

Councillor Mark Williams, Southwark Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and New Homes, said: “The railway arches around Southwark have such great potential to be turned into busy, thriving shops, workshops, cafes or community facilities that draw people down into the borough.

“In Elephant and Castle in particular we have a vision of creating a ‘low line’ or series of shops and cafes in the arches

that people can walk down from the river to our new town centre at the Elephant.

“Putting homes in these arches will have a direct impact on the surrounding communities, as well as being wholly unsuitable locations for people to live and the council wants to make sure that any such proposals receive the proper consultation and consideration they should have.”

The proposal to approve the new planning restrictions was passed at the council’s May planning committee.

Neil Coyle, the Member of Parliament for Old Southwark and Bermondsey, told the News that this was typical of the Government’s failure to tackle the housing crisis.

He said: “I’m glad the council have acted both quickly, to prevent the loss of light industrial space, and flexibly so that no outright ban is imposed if sensible proposals come forward.

“I’d be very concerned to lose some of the railway arches that are home to great businesses in Southwark like our outstanding local brewers and gin distiller, as well as cultural space on Spare Street near the Walworth Road.

“It would also be a shame if the low line plans were blocked by private residential development preventing open, public rights of access for pedestrians and cyclists.”

FIFTEEN YEAR OLD STABEBD AT FUNFAIR

A FIFTEEN-year-old boy who was chased and repeatedly stabbed by youths in the mix of milling crowds at Burgess Park funfair is said to be in a stable condition.

Police and an air ambulance were called on Sunday – the busy final day of the George Irvin’s Ultimate Funfair – at about 6pm.

The park had basked in clear sunshine record temperatures for the year of 22C, where thousands had come for the park rides, games and food stalls.

But a local councillor, Samantha JuryDada, who witnessed the vicious assault said the fight broke out after the victim got off one of the rides.

She described seeing a group of teenage boys, of roughly the same age, chasing the victim only a moment after he got off one of the rides.

Speaking to the News, Cllr Jury-Dada said: “My friend and I saw it take place

while we were queuing for one of the rides. It happened very quickly,” she said. “The males just started chasing this boy through the crowds. They pulled him to the ground and stabbed him.

“My friend was the first person to call the police as people crowded around the victim or watched as though this were a normal scene. The really sad thing was so many people were just watching it happen and taking photos.

“It was so worrying that these males were running through a crowded place with lots of children while holding a weapon.

“My friend had to describe to the ambulance service what kind of condition he was in and what his wounds were like so that they could give the victim the right response.”

She also reflected on what appeared to be an almost non-existent police presence.

“There was no police the fair. I know they are extremely pushed with central government cuts to numbers of officers, but it was such a busy event in an area

City of London must minimise disruption in wake of Tower Bridge closure

THE CITY of London must “ensure disruption is minimal” according to Lambeth and Southwark’s London Assembly Member as the closure of Tower Bridge this October is announced.

Responding to the news, Florence Eshalomi AM (pictured), said: “Tower Bridge is amongst London’s most iconic landmarks and of course it’s important

that we preserve this important part of our heritage.

“Whilst this work is clearly necessary, it’s vital it doesn’t cause chaos on our local roads.

“With the closure of Tooley Street and the recent works for the Cycle Superhighway, we’ve already experienced a level of disruption that we don’t want to see made worse.

“It’s essential that these repairs are delivered to schedule and that the City of London Corporation communicates

clearly with road users to ensure disruption is minimal.”

It was officially announced on June 2 that the 122-year-old bridge will shut for three months for vital structural repairs.

The News reported how ferries may be drafted in when the bridge is closed to pedestrians for three weekends to help meet the demand of 40,000 people needing to cross every day.

Nearby Tooley Street is also closed to eastbound traffic until 2018 for Network Rail’s rebuild of London Bridge Railway

Station.

Leon Daniels, Managing Director of Surface Transport at TfL, said: “We’ve been working closely with the City of London to minimise the impact of the vital refurbishment of Tower Bridge and to ensure that Londoners have the travel advice they need.

“Our advice to those traveling in the area is to check before they travel and to plan an alternative route or allow more time for their journeys as roads will be busier than usual.”

Police say the boy was taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service, while other witnesses who took to social media said the victim’s mother road with him in the ambulance.

His condition has changed from serious to stable, but he has yet to be discharged.

No arrests have been made, and police say their enquiries continue.

‘Woman hurt in car collision’

POLICE ARE appealing for witnesses after a large-scale brawl outside Elephant and Castle station on Saturday that ended with a woman being knocked down by a car.

BERMONDSEY

The fight broke out at about 7am and left three men injured and needing hospital treatment. The 24-year-old woman who was caught in the collision was taken to hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

The car involved in the collision was stopped by police near Falmouth Road and its three occupants were arrested, including two men aged 22 and 20, and a woman of 27. They have been released on bail to dates in mid and late June, and early August, pending further enquiries. Elephant Road remained closed at the junction with New Kent Road and Walworth Road until 12pm.Officers are keen to hear from any witnesses via 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

By-election today

ROTHERHITHE: The Surrey Docks by-election to fill former Liberal Democrat councillor Lisa Rajan’s seat will take place today, Thursday, June 9.

Five candidates from the Conservative Party, Labour Party, the Green party, UKIP and the Liberal Democrats will join one independent candidate to contest the Rotherhithe seat. The by-election was triggered after it was announced Lisa Rajan would stand down due to family commitments.

CHILDREN AT Surrey Square Primary School in Walworth have celebrated The Queen’s 90th birthday with the gift of a giant flower mural.

The birthday bouquet, which spells out ‘Happy 90th Birthday Queen Elizabeth’ was made from 1,000 red, white and blue paper flowers.

Deputy head teacher of Surrey Square Primary School, Matt Morden, said the bouquet was also made with the help of L&Q housing association.

“Our children loved getting involved - it was a fun way to explore their creative side and it was great to involve the whole school,” he said.

“Seeing the final mural was a real highlight, and the children were genuinely proud of their own unique

contribution. We hope Her Majesty appreciates it and enjoys all of the celebrations to come.”

A MEMORIAL service for Bermondsey’s Barry Albion-Dyer will take place on June 25 at St James’s Church, Bermondsey, to remember the loved funeral home director one year on from his death.

The service for Barry is open to all starting at 11am and will last an hour, with tributes from his family and friends including former Old Southwark and Bermondsey MP Simon Hughes.

Speaking on how Albins has been faring since his passing, Barry’s son Simon told the News that the business was doing better than ever as they try to maintain his spirit.

“It’s amazing how quickly the year has gone for us. The year before he died was probably the most difficult.

Trying to run this place with Dad was difficult because of how ill he was. We had been running the business for a good year before he died,” he said.

“A lot of people have said things like ‘it won’t be the same because Barry was such a character’ but I think we have managed to maintain the ethos of the company and the spirit of him.”

Just one week after Barry’s funeral, Simon and his brother Jon found themselves busy as they were asked to help bring home the British tourists killed in the Tunisian terrorist attack. Simon said: “We were called up to bring all 30 people home. In that week we got all of them back.

That says a lot about how we managed to deal with our father’s death.

“We just got over the funeral and were trying to come to terms with it and then bam we were carrying on.”

Looking ahead the sons are planning to do work on their office starting in September to make it bigger with more space for a chapel of rest to give grieving families even more private time with their loved ones.

NEW DETAILS of Scotland Yard’s recently announced Operation Viper initiative to stem London’s gun crime ‘spike’ can be revealed by the News.

The surprise announcement by the Met Police to begin using Operation Viper in Southwark and five other inner-London boroughs was made on May 25.

Initial reports stated a 50-strong team of officers, headed by Trident and Gang Crime Command, will be deployed to tackle incidents where there is a threat of a firearm being discharged.

A statement from the force said the responsibilities of Operation Viper are to carry out “high-visibility armed patrols” in gun crime hot sports.

They will also carry out weapons sweeps, intelligence-led stop and search, pro-active number plate recognition operations, target known firearms offenders, and make arrests and execute search warrants.

One of Scotland Yard’s detective chief inspectors, Lee Hill, who was tasked with setting up Operation Viper, told the News: “Viper is led by officers from the Trident and Gang Crime Command, and includes detectives from the Serious and Organised Crime Command (SCO7), uniformed officers from borough, and the Task Force, including the Territorial Support Group and Dogs Unit.

[However] these officers are not armed with firearms.

“The Force Firearms Unit (SCO19) will dedicate a team from the existing Armed Response Unit to support the work. These officers carry a handgun or pistol, and a semi-automatic carbine or semi-automatic compact rifle. The vast majority of officers within the Met Police do not carry a firearm.”

Southwark-based detective inspector, Susan Pawsey, has also confirmed to the News that two of the armed-response

officers have been selected from Southwark’s bobbies.

DCI Hill added: “I wouldn’t want to create the perception that Southwark will be swamped with armed police. It will be a small number of specially-trained marksmen within the team of 50 who would respond to an armed incident where there is the risk of a firearm discharge.

“It will come as no surprise that there are hot spots for gun crime, so predominantly that’s where our focus will be. It’s when you have had intelligence that there might be reprisals [following an incident where a weapon was discharged]. We will also be carrying out intelligence-led stop and search.”

The original press statement distributed on May 25 explained that Operation Viper was quickly planned in reaction to a seventeen per cent “spike” in gun crime.

Between January and May 2016 there have been 122 incidents where a gun was fired, while 226 were reported for the whole of 2015. The figures suggest a seventeen per cent increase compared with the period January to May 2015.

These levels are still an improvement on the 337 discharges that took place in 2011.

Meanwhile last year saw a record broken by the force for the number of firearms recovered from the streets, totalling 714.

Commander Duncan Ball, in charge of Gangs and Organised Crime, said “at least half” of last year’s shooting were “related to drugs”.

DI Susan Pawsey said Southwark has a relatively high volume of gun-related incidents. But the borough has seen a decrease in the number of lethal and nonlethal gun discharges for the twelve months from May 1, 2015 to April 30, 2016, compared with the same period from 2014 to 2015.

Ideas for five projects in a newlydesignated Latin American businesses zone were published in an academic paper ‘The case for London’s Latin Quarter: Retention, growth and sustainability’ on Monday.

The paper’s co-authors, Patria Román-Velázquez and Nicola Hill, lay out a “strategic community vision” for how the Elephant’s 96 Latin American businesses can contribute to the area’s revitalisation.

Among the five projects are a pedestrianised Latin Boulevard of shops to link Eagle’s Yard with Elephant Road with public realm improvements to smarten it up.

There is also suggestions for a Latin American market to draw inspiration from Brick Lane and Camden Market; new provision for community spaces with childcare facilities, youth programmes, and language and skills training. The fifth idea is to promote new Latin American events, public art works and murals.

Patria, who is chair of the Latin Elephant charity, said: “The time is now for London to act.

“In the case of the Latin Quarter at

Elephant and Castle the risk of displacement and further isolation of Southwark’s small migrant and ethnic businesses is great, and could easily go undocumented.

“This is something that we see time and time again across London, as a consequence of urban change.

“This report sets a pathway to achieve best practice in the way key decision makers and local authorities engage with, account for and incorporate migrant and ethnic businesses and the local community in to wide-scale programmes of regeneration.”

After attending a launch event on Monday where the paper’s findings were showcased, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, Mark Williams told the News: “It was a really positive meeting and I committed that we will formally recognise it as a Latin American area.

“I want to look at what support we can give them through the regeneration of the area and help them survive and grow through this change. Our role will be to work w i t h Delancey and Lend Lease to have a

retail strategy to accommodate them.”

In April the council released a statement that only tenants who lived in a council property between April 2010 and July 2013 could be owed £240. It has now decided to broaden the time scale from April 1, 2001, to July 28, 2013 – making thousands more residents eligible to claim.

This, and the decision to end their deal with Thames Water, were approved by Southwark Council’s cabinet members at a public meeting on Tuesday.

Stephanie Cryan, deputy leader of the council and portfolio holder for housing, wrote ahead of the meeting that the council needs to re-evaluate how tenants are charged for water rates.

“The preferred option,” Cllr Cryan wrote, “is to terminate the Council’s contractual agreement with Thames Water, meaning our tenants would have a direct billing arrangement for water rates.

“It is important that we consult with our tenants prior to any formal decision

being made. We also need to ensure we help and support our most vulnerable residents in any transition from the current arrangements…”

Documents published ahead of Tuesday’s meeting show the council had forecast that the gross charge for Thames Water, which the council passes on to tenants, would be £13.6m for the 2016/17 financial year, leaving itself with a “commission income” of £2.4m.

A statement from councillor Richard Livingstone in April, who at the time was Southwark Council’s cabinet member for housing, said: “While we remain disappointed with the decision, clarity about this arrangement which is used across the country by landlords and water companies is welcome and we now want to move forward.

“The council will also attempt to contact former tenants from that period, and we will set up a system where people can make claims, subject to proof of tenancy.”

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL will terminate its contract with Thames Water and offer refunds to thousands more residents, after a high court found they had broken the law.

The legal challenge was brought by Camberwell resident, Kim Jones, in March.

The hearing concluded with a verdict that up to 37,000 residents had been overcharged by the council for water and services charges, for which the authority collected payment from its tenants on behalf of Thames Water.

The judge, Mr Justice Newey, said the council had contradicted the ‘2006 Water Resale Order’ by effectively “bought and re-sold water and sewage services” while making a profit.

A ROTHERHITE man with Cystic Fibrosis has been named a Point of Light after successfully climbing the highest mountain in the world in May, raising more than £86,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

Nick Talbot, 40, climbed to the summit of Mount Everest in Nepal on May 13, battling freezing temperatures and dangerous conditions after setting off in

March.

This year was Nick’s third attempt on the mountain after a failed attempt in 2014 and the massive Nepal earthquake preventing ascent last year.

Nick told the News how his oxygen tank broke near the top and a storm nearly forced them to call it off, before he beat his team by fifteen minutes to the finish.

“When we were getting to the top a storm was closing in and the team leader said at one point that we should go

back,” he said.

“It was touch and go but he talked to the Sherpas [mountain guides from Nepal] and they persuaded him to wait for a few minutes and then it cleared.

“I went ahead of the team but then my oxygen broke, which was a bit worrying.

We bashed it around a bit and got it working again. I did wonder whether I would have enough energy to climb again from Base Four.

“We got to the top fifteen minutes before the others. It was amazing being

able to see for miles. I felt relief and it was brilliant.”

Nick was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis when he was twelve. It is a lifelimiting inherited condition caused by a faulty gene that controls the movement of salt and water in and out of cells.

This causes mucus to gather in the lungs and digestive system and creates a range of challenging symptoms.

Prime Minister David Cameron, who awards the Point of Light, said: “Nick should be enormously proud of this

astounding achievement which builds on decades of fundraising and awareness raising for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

“I'm pleased to recognise his commitment and dedication by naming him a Point of Light."

Nick is the 544th winner of the award which was developed in partnership with the Points of Light programme in the USA, which was first established by President George H. W. Bush.

College hires immigration lawyer to help caretaker who needs bone marrow transplant from brother DULWICH

DULWICH COLLEGE has hired an immigration lawyer to help with a sick caretaker’s plea to have his Nigerian brother granted a visa so he can give a lifesaving bone marrow transplant in the UK.

Isaac Aganozor, 44, of Sydenham Hill, suffers from leukaemia and was told by Bart’s Hospital, Smithfield that his brother, Patrick, is a match for a vital bone marrow transplant.

Patrick’s visa was denied, however, on economic grounds as the Home Office felt they were not convinced he would leave the UK once the transplant was over.

Isaac is now appealing to the Home Office and others to allow his brother to come to the UK and his employer, Dulwich College, has arranged for an immigration lawyer to assist.

at Dulwich College, said: “We’ve paid for an immigration solicitor to make sure all the ‘i’s get dotted and that everything goes smoothly.

“The College’s position is that this is a sick man and he needs help. Bart’s have told us that it is essential that his brother gets here for a fairly non-invasive procedure in the next four to five weeks.

“The College has paid for his return ticket and accommodation for the time that he’s here so it’s really all ready to go.”

Isaac has urged the Home Office to consider his “right to life” instead of his brother’s “economic situation” as his health deteriorates.

He said: “It makes me feel sad because Patrick coming here would have been the closest thing I could have to a cure. From the beginning I was told this leukaemia is very high risk.

“For the immigration office to think that Patrick won’t go back to Nigeria is not fair. They have no proof of this.

“Patrick being a match is the happiest news I have had but my hope was dashed when he was refused. When the refusal happened I lost that hope. It is making me afraid.

“I think the immigration office and Home Office should have considered my right to life instead of Patrick’s economic position.

“I am deeply sad. If I don’t have it I will just pass away. The solution to this is no more than six hours’ plane journey away.

I don’t know what to do. I am really afraid. I am willing to sign anything that gives a guarantee that Patrick will go home afterwards. I will be willing to be prosecuted if he doesn’t.”

A Home Office statement said all cases are considered on their individual merits and that the “onus is on the individual to provide the necessary supporting evidence to meet UK immigration rules”.

A CAMBERWELL woman’s sponsored walk has raised more than £1,000 for the charity she has gone to for advice since she was a little girl.

Lucy Kavanagh, 27, was diagnosed on her twelfth birthday with Chron’s disease – an inflammation of the digestive system, affecting sufferer’s intestines and gut with ulcers.

Having finished the five-kilometre walk for Chrohn’s & Colitis UK on Saturday, whilst hand in hand with her boyfriend, Lucy said: “It was really lovely and a really successful day.

“I’ve been going to the charity since my first year of secondary school and using them for advice ever since.

“We didn’t have a computer for a lot of my time at school, so I always used them to explain to teachers or employers about what my disease does. Before I found them all my parents could do was go through medical papers.

“Chrohn’s leaves me feeling very fatigued and it can flare up at any time and sometimes cause diarrhoea and vomiting. I can lose a week at

work or school and people will assume it was just some strange illness.

Consultation starts on playground almhouses plan

HERNE HILL: Residents have been invited to a public consultation to view proposals to build an Almshouse on the playground of Judith Kerr Primary School.

Dulwich Almshouse Charity, which is supported by The Dulwich Estate, is also land lords of the school located in Half Moon Lane.

Parents from the ‘Save the Judith Kerr Primary School Green Space Playground Campaign’ previously said building the elderly residents’ home would mean the loss of twothirds of the playground.

Campaign member Catherine Mattison told the News: “We parents at the school feel that this isn't appropriate given the space's current use as a playground, and we think that they could find a better site, considering the scale of their holdings in the area.”

The latest round of public consultations, which began yesterday, will continue to be hosted until Saturday, June 11, at the Methodist Church in Half Moon Lane.

A petition with 1,377 signatures has been made to oppose the plans.

A spokesman for The Dulwich Estate previously told the News the charity had been consulting with councillors, community leaders and stakeholders and will review the feedback it receives.

Foxtons approved for Peckham

PECKHAM: Plans by Foxtons estate agents to open a new branch in Peckham has taken a leap forward after planning permission was given by Southwark Council.

The company had sought permission to change the shop front of the address 218-222 Rye Lane in March, which used to be a branch of Maximus employment agency.

It has now been given an official thumbs up by the council’s planning committee, but a date for when the branch could open is being kept under wraps.

The News approached a Foxtons press spokesperson to ask if a date has been set for its opening. But spokesperson said the company “did not want to have it mentioned” in the press.

‘OUR KIDS ARE LIVING ON A BUILDING SITE’

YOUNG Bermondsey mums living in Maydew House for temporary accommodation claim they have not been able to wash their children properly as they live on a “building site”.

Their criticisms come as Maydew House, part of the Abbeyfield Estate, is undergoing a major refurbishment project meaning construction is taking place on all but three floors.

They claim the conditions are so dire they fear for their children’s health as asbestos is removed around them.

Katie Martin, a mother of a 20-month -old boy, has been living there since April and says she has to “wipe him down” to clean him as the taps and hot

water don’t work.

She said: “I’ve been without water and haven’t been able to shower since moving in. The locks have been tampered with too. I don’t feel safe living here.

“I think it’s disgusting that they [Southwark Council] can put people here, especially with children. They just don’t seem to care.”

Katie did complain about the conditions and was offered permanent housing above a restaurant but she says the smell from the kitchen below was too overpowering.

Danielle Collinson, a mother of two, has been living there since July last year and has also complained but has not received any alternative.

She said: “I have complained but they have not even offered me a better

place at all. My youngest had to have a heart operation when she was born but they haven’t taken that into consideration.

“They [Southwark Council] want to rush us out because they want to get down to our level but they can’t move us out till we have suitable housing.”

Maydew House was the centre of controversy in 2010 as plans to sell off the building for development were considered after Southwark Council received a large bill for removing asbestos.

Residents were relocated last year but three floors have been maintained for temporary housing.

Councillor Stephanie Cryan, Southwark Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing, said: “The council is finalising plans to refurbish Maydew

House which will allow us to bring high quality homes back into use for our residents.

“While the planning and preparation is underway, we are using the block to provide temporary accommodation to people in desperate need of housing.

“With such huge demand for housing and a lack of available properties across London, we have to make use of all available housing, including blocks where improvements are required.

“We’re very sorry for the problems that some Maydew residents have experienced with erratic water supply.

“However, we have been fixing these issues as soon as they’re reported, and we are working with residents to find more permanent and suitable homes for them.”

Grieving friends left in the dark by coroners BERMONDSEY

FRIENDS OF a much-loved recently deceased Bermondsey man have criticised the Coroner’s Court for “not releasing any information” about a funeral or whether a next of kin has been found.

Meurig Gomer Wyn-Roberts, 53, known as Gomer Roberts to his friends, was found dead above the Greyhound Pub in Peckham last month.

But as police have been unable to identify any next of kin, close friends have criticised the coroner for not giving any information about what will happen to his body and fear a public health funeral.

Andy Gorgan, one of Gomer’s friends, said: “It’s frustrating. You want to put a man to rest and no one is coming forward with anything.

“We just don’t know why they are

“You keep getting people asking whether there’s news or whether they’ve found anything and there’s nothing.

The News has tried to obtain details as to how the investigation was going to find a next of kin or whether there would be funeral but was told by the coroner’s that they couldn’t reveal anything.

A BENEFIT for a Bermondsey man diagnosed with a brain tumour will take place on Saturday, June 11, at Rotherhithe’s Surdoc Club, to help raise funds for treatment.

Julian Siano, 27, was diagnosed with the tumour ten weeks ago and has since been undergoing rounds of radiotherapy and chemotherapy in Manchester, where

he is living with his girlfriend.

Originally from Bermondsey though, Julian’s close friends have decided to get together to get him as much help as possible.

Susan Musa, a close friend, said: “We’re raising money for Julian to take alternative medicine and to help with his living arrangements.

“Julian feels like my son from another mother. We are all devastated by all this so they just want to help him. There could be a miracle you never know.”

The Surdoc Club donated their hall for the event, which will host a DJ and a raffle as well as other entertainment.

Julian told the News that he wanted to stay positive and for his friends not to worry.

He said: “I was overwhelmed by all the support. It was nice to of them to set it up and I’m looking forward to coming down for it.

“It’s important to stay positive and I can’t let it get me down. I can’t feel sorry for myself as there’s always people who

are going to die sooner.

“I haven’t changed as a person. I do have some dark days but they only last a couple of hours then I’m back up again.

“I don’t want people to think they have to walk on egg shells around me because they don’t.”

The fundraiser will take place at the Surdoc Social Club, Rotherhithe, SE16 2UJ from 7:30pm-1am and all ages are welcome.

THREE BERMONDSEY Zumbathons took place on June 4-5 to raise funds for Jaimie Oliver’s Food Foundation to support exercise and healthy eating.

Erwin de Jong Oliveira, a Zumba instructor, was inspired to help people develop a healthy lifestyle after running a weekly class.

He did this by running three hour Zumbathons where people exercised to music.

Erwin said: “My main Zumba class is on Tuesday night on a council estate in Bermondsey, where I have had a steady group of participants in

the last five years.

“Each week most of them turn up and take part and all they really want is to have fun. However, participants have struggled to have a healthy lifestyle.

“I can see how they could create such lifestyle for themselves through exercising, drinking less and make structural changes to their diet, but I see they struggle to achieve that for lots of different reasons.

“We had about 20-30 people come along in Bermondsey. We managed to raise managed to raise £420 for Jaimie Oliver’s Food Foundation. A lot of them were my regular group and it was good.”

He has seen a lot of change over that time. “We’re going to be effected,” he said. “Before, when shops like WH Smith and Currys were here at this end, lots of people came. As soon as shops like that move on there are fewer people, no one comes past. It’s really quiet.”

“It’s sad. I come every week when I go to Tesco or to get my hair done,” said shopper Pat Knowen “The stuff’s really good in there, and it’s got all the brands in one place. It’s a shame, everything is going really. You never know, maybe something will still happen and it will be ok.”

“It’s a shame – the shop is very useful.

There’s nothing here once it goes,” said another shopper who asked not to be named. Staff at the store were getting on with a normal day of trade though: “It is business as usual – chins up,” said one staff member.

Ian Moore, Centre Manager at Surrey Quays Shopping Centre, was unable to answer questions about the store’s future.

He said: “All I am able to advise currently is that Surrey Quays’ owner British Land is liaising closely with the administrators.”

The News understands there is currently no planned timeline for closure at the Surrey Quays store, as it depends on a number of factors such as stock sales.

LOCAL LAD turned storm trooper, John Boyega, has said he feels “honoured” to become a patron of Theatre Peckham, where he first learnt his craft.

The Camberwell-born actor, who shot to stardom with a lead role in the latest Star Wars movie, has also launched a campaign to raise money for the theatre.

The 24-year-old graduated from the company at the age of fourteen, having joined aged nine.

"As a graduate of the company, I am honoured to be in a position to give back to Theatre Peckham, beginning with the ‘Name a Seat’ fundraising campaign which supports the theatre's new home in Peckham,” Boyega said.

A CAMPAIGN to oppose Southwark Council’s plans for three tower blocks on Rotherhithe’s South Dock Boatyard has raised £7,475, to hire a lawyer for a potential legal challenge if it goes ahead.

The group are opposed to the council’s plans for a major 213 flat development on the basis that it may ruin the area’s low-rise appeal and run the boatyard out of business.

Gary Williams, an organiser of the group, criticised the council over their consultation process and expressed worry over them seemingly applying for planning permission from themselves.

He said: “The council are the game keepers and the poachers. That is why they want to ram it [the planning permission] through as quickly as possible.

“We’re going to wait for the planning to be put in and then the lawyer will get in touch. We want the council to rethink before that even happens. We want them to stop now and reconsider.”

The boatyard is an important part of the Thames as it is one of few with a crane that can lift boats out of the water.

Grit Eckert, another organiser, said: “It sets a precedent. If they can build here then they can build more. The development would make the boat yard unusable.”

No planning permission has been requested yet because of the Surrey Docks by-election taking place on June 9.

Councillor Mark Williams, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for regeneration, said: “The scheme will include rebuilding a new modern boatyard, which will support local jobs and river trade, as well as securing the long term future of the boatyard.

“We are consulting with residents and at this stage a final scheme has not been agreed and no planning application has been made.

“We will be writing to all residents in the area shortly to invite them to a consultation event to discuss the proposals and feedback on the comments and concerns we have received so far.”

RESIDENTS OF three newly-built housing blocks have listed a catalogue of issues with their homes, including rough sleepers, water shortages and leaks.

The three buildings in Camberwell Station Road: Woodrow Court, Felix Court and Spring Way, were built only eighteen months ago and are run by Wandle Housing Association.

Residents contacted the News with their concerns after reading the horrifying story of the 85 new-build Wandle-run flats in Solomon’s Passage, Peckham; half of which have been condemned for demolition despite being six years old.

Two women living separately in Felix Court, and who did not want to be named, spoke of problems with security,

heating, and “systematic” communication issues they have battled” to have sorted out.

The first woman said: “One of my neighbours is a single parent with two children who had no hot water for eight months, and for days at a time had no water at all.

“It happens so often that all residents made a Facebook group to ask each other if we can use neighbours’ showers.

“There’s always going to be problems with a brand new building, but this has been going on and on.

“A lot of the people who live here are people who bought off-plan with sharedownership. It’s just not what any of us expect from our first experience of owning a flat.”

The second woman told the News: “The security gates have broken many times, so we’ve had rough sleepers getting in here. I’ve left the flat in the morning to walk my kids to school and found people sleeping in the corridor.

“Wandle also have so many different contractors. It means whenever you need something fixed there’s three groups talking to each other before anything gets done. Then when people visit to look at the pipes or whatever, they turn around and say ‘I wasn’t told the problem would be with this’ or ‘this isn’t out problem’. It wastes hours of your life.

One man living in Woodrow Court, on the other side of the site, spoke anonymously about he and his partner feeling fazed by ongoing security issues, poor water supply and mysterious leaks.

“What’s also shocking is we have been having a lot of random leaks in the basement car park. Last night there was a huge leak on the first floor that keeps gathering at the basement,” the man said.

“There is also mould and mildew down there that Wandle say their contractors have fixed, but you can see was just painted over. We have smoke detection units seem to go on and off at random.”

One of the Felix Court women added: “To be honest, I like it here. These problems are a nightmare, but in a way they have brought a lot of us together and now it feels like a community. But if it carries on for too long we will have to think of selling and leaving.”

Camberwell Station Road, where the three troubled housing blocks are located, has already seen its share of misfortune. The Woodrow Court, Felix Court and Spring Way blocks were built to replace large residential buildings that were torched to the ground in 2010 because of an arson attack.

However a Wandle spokesman said: “[These] issues are in no way similar to those at Solomon’s Passage. There was a problem with a small amount of water entering the basement carpark through a retaining wall, but we have installed additional drainage which has resolved this. Woodrow Court is a steel-frame building, constructed in a completely different way to Solomon’s Passage.”

A Wandle spokesman said: “As with any new development, some defects have become apparent at Felix Court and Woodrow Court during the first twelve months of the homes being occupied.

“We have resolved most of the issues reported to us and have plans in place to address those still outstanding.

“We have received and responded to reports of antisocial behaviour and criminal damage at the development.

Wandle is working with residents and the relevant authorities to tackle this, and we are in the process of installing CCTV around the buildings.

“Two residents have reported noise problems to us. The buildings exceed sound proofing standards as set by industry regulations but we will work with residents to try and reduce noise where needed.

“Wandle is committed to providing homes people can be proud of and will continue to ensure Felix Court and Woodrow Court are safe and secure.”

AMID THE worry of losing both their Crown Post Office and sorting office, Walworth residents have been frustrated by the unexplained loss of two post boxes.

The two post boxes in Walworth Road, one located outside Marks and Spencer, the other outside the old Town Hall, were both sealed shut unexpectedly in April.

The News has since been told by a Royal Mail spokesman that they were closed because the hinges on the doors have “corroded” and need to be repaired and replaced “as soon as possible”.

Chair of the Walworth Society, Jeremy Leach, wrote to the News a fortnight ago to proclaim the loss of any “decent post service” in SE17.

Jeremy said: “It would not be so bad if there was ever anyone you could approach at the Royal Mail or the Post Office to ask

about getting them reopened, but any dialogue with either is completely impossible.

“A friend of mine, who is disabled and old, still uses letters. It’s really a significant problem for someone like that, and the nearest other sorting office is over at the Bricklayers Arms.”

Faraday ward councillor Lorraine Lauder said: “A lot of older people here who aren’t online and take pride in writing letters. What will they do, go back to carrier pigeons?

“I tried to complain to the Post Office, and they told me to write them a letter. My nearest post box now is in Mandela Way in SE1, which is a long walk, and if Crampton Street does close it’s where everyone here will have to go.”

Newington ward councillor Eleanor Kerslake said that Freedom of Information requests she submitted to the Post Office to establish the financial viability and footfall of the Walworth Post Office have been rejected.

“I was met with a stone wall,” Cllr Kerslake said. “With a Post Office also scheduled for closure in Peckham, this is all very unsettling.”

A spokeswoman for the Post Office has told the News that there is still no update on the company’s efforts to find a “franchise partner” for Walworth’s Crown Post Office. Without another business to share a premises with, the Post Office will have to close in the area altogether.

A spokesman for the Royal Mail said: “We apologise to customers for the temporary inconvenience and will reopen the boxes as soon as we can. There are three other boxes in the immediate vicinity: at Walworth Road, Cadiz Road, Manor Place, Crampton Street and Walworth Post Office.”

The Royal Mail spokesman confirmed that the company is exploring an option to relocate its Crampton Street operations to 4 Mandela Way, SE1.

THE LANDLADY of the muchadored Nag’s Head in Camberwell fears her days at the pub are numbered after building works were approved last month.

The building’s owners, Landlord Camberwell Road Ltd, received planning permission on April 8 to convert the nineteenth century pub’s first floor into flats, and “fill in” its beer garden.

Manager Julie Clifford has said she was given a renewed lease which expires in April 2017. The company say they would like the property to carry on being a public house, but will begin offering her “market rent,” at double the price she is paying now.

“I’ve been given eleven months, and after that I’ll be kicked out and that will be it,” said Julie, 53.

“There’s no way I will be able to afford a higher rent. And if they are building all upstairs the noise will stop people wanting to come in and I would have to find somewhere else to live.

“It’s a terrible shame. This pub is a real community and there’s been such an outpouring from people here. We’re always busy and our customers are very loyal.

“It doesn’t matter when you come in, there’s always at least six old boys who come in when we open at 10am and go home for tea. And if they’re not in we call them up and check on them. For people like that we’re the only social life these guys have, and we’re one of the only proper old pub within walking distance.”

Julie’s time looking after the Nag’s Head has been typified by good will and local support. Her first beer order in 2010 was paid for by locals who chipped in to raise £1,600.

“That was how we started,” said Julie, “and we just went from strength to strength. The pub still does great businesses, and we have just been full every day from Friday to Monday.

“I really don’t know what I’ll do after I lose the pub. I feel too old to just start working for someone else. One barmaid who’s on the books here has

Andrea Rasca, 49, has said his new Mercato Metropolitano London street food market will rejuvenate a derelict building with 45,000 sq ft of space in 42 Newington Causeway.

BERMONDSEY RESIDENTS are outraged after they received bills of up to £10,000 each for roof repairs they claim should have been carried out under warranty years ago.

Residents of Hestia House, Antonine Heights and Vesta Court of City Walk criticised the companies involved with developing the properties for not trying harder to have the warranty honoured.

The development was started in 2004

by Galliard Homes, who in turn contracted building company Ardmore to construct the roofs.

But since residents moved into the homes they claim they have had persistent leaks and no luck in getting lasting repairs completed.

Nikolai Marangozov, one of the residents, said: “There are constant leaks going through the building. With the leaks I suppose there’s not much we can do, but with the roof they [Ardmore] are not getting back to us at all.

“More than one hundred of us now have £10,000 bills to fix the roof.

Everyone is getting charged.”

Galliard Homes say they no longer

“We just can’t afford to battle them as they have big legal teams. We bought these places with a 25-year guarantee. It is outrageous.”

Residents say they have tried to get Estates & Management Limited (E&M), who manage the buildings for Parkbrace, to pursue warranty repairs to the roof but with no success.

A spokesperson for E&M said: “Two residents meetings have taken place relating to this matter and the current status has been explained to all that attended.

“We are continuing to pursue legal avenues to resolve this issue and are committed to maintaining an open dialogue with all our lessees throughout this process.”

THE FIRST ever Dulwich Strongman competition raised more than £1,800 for Great Ormond Street Hospital on May 21, with a world strongman competition legend taking part.

Jon Valgeir Williams, who represented Iceland in two World’s Strongest Man competitions, decided to come down and flex his muscles to help raise money.

Organiser Stephen Hill said: “Jon Valgeir Williams came and was a competitor. It was great to watch him.

“We raised about £1800 for Great Ormond Street Hospital where my cousin’s sons visit for check-ups as they both have kidney disease.

“It took us four hours to get 21 competitors doing all six events, aged from fourteen-years-old to about 45years-old.

“There were about 60 people who came to watch during the event.”

Disgusted by council’s treatment of Fisher

I AM disgusted with how Southwark Council have treated Fisher FC.

The club’s preparations for the new season are on hold as they’ve now left Dulwich Hamlet and the council continue to keep hold of the key leaving the club in limbo.

The deal was done, Fairview donated and built the new St Pauls ground as part of the Surrey Docks Stadium regeneration with Fisher FC very much at the forefront.

The Council are effectively holding the club to ransom and killing their preparations for the new season and beyond.

The whole idea was to allow an historic and local institution to rebuild and serve the community - it’s not always about the immediate best deal but what the long term goal should be.

The council should honour the original deal and let Fisher FC rebuild.

The club have campaigned for too long to have the rug pulled from under their feet at the last leg – it’s quite simply cruel!

YOUR ARTICLE ‘Care home could close and move to Kent’ Southwwark News, June 2 2016, alerts us to the proposed closure of yet another SLaM Specialist Care Unit for older people with mental health problems including dementia.

Worse still, the plan is that the residents of Ann Moss Unit in Bermondsey will be moved to Chelsham House at the Royal Bethlem Hospital in Beckenham.

This will not only cause additional confusion for the residents who move but will make it much more difficult for their family and friends to visit them.

It seems there is a never-ending reduction of residential and day care places for the most vulnerable elderly people in Southwark.

SLaM has already closed Aubrey Lewis Ward 2 in the Maudsley Hospital and replaced it with a Home

At an earlier stage Felix Post Day Care Unit in the Maudsley and Holmdene Day Care Centre in Herne Hill were closed.

Camberwell Green Nursing Home, one of only three Nursing Homes for older people in Southwark, closed at the end of last year.

Southwark Council is also planning to close Southwark Park Day Care Centre and Fred Francis Day Care Centre in East Dulwich. These will be replaced with one centre providing a hub of day care services in Cator Street.

The loss of all these public services means that those of us who have the misfortune to suffer from dementia in the future will have to access residential care in the private sector.

The state of Southwark’s Nursing Homes does not inspire any confidence in this prospect.

Those people who would have been provided with day care in the past are likely to be depending on family members or to be lonely at home with short visits from domiciliary care agencies.

This dire state of affairs may have been brought about by cuts in funding to both local authorities and health services but surely we can find a way to keep Ann Moss Unit open for older people in Southwark.

I READ with interest on your letter page about the disappearing post boxes by Jeremy Leach, Walworth Society.

I did make a member enquiry about this, the response I got was to contact Royal Mail.

I had many of my constituents contact me to ask why this post box was sealed up?

I have many elderly in my ward who rely on this particular post box (outside Marks and Spencers in Walworth Road) They are not online and don't have a computer. It seems we have to go back to carrier pigeon times, what do others think?

To my MP: Why I want to leave the EU

IN HIS ‘View from Westminster’ column in Southwark News Neil Coyle makes a number of assertions in support of a remain vote in the EU referendum which are fundamentally wrong and misinformed.

Our economy does not depend on our membership of the EU but rather on the ability to trade freely with an ever global world.

One can do no better than refer to Sir Stuart Rose the leader of the Stronger in Europe campaingn who, in his evidence to the Treasury Select Committe, said that if we left the EU our economy would grow and wages would rise. He went on to say this was not necessarily a good thing - why it is difficult to understand. Secondly the Primeminister was forced to say this week that he did not in any way resile from the statement he made earlier this year that the UK would could 'thrive' outside the EU. Much is said of the supposed benefits of the single market, yet the EU has persistently failed to complete the single market in financial services in which the City is pre-eminent and which is so vital to our GDP. Our trade within the EU has declined significantly over the last decade and freed from the shackles of a stagnant eurozone economy we would be able to trade globally and freely rather than being inward looking and protectionist as EU members. Co-operate with our neighbours and friends in the EU yes, but we do not have to do so at the expense of our relationship with the rest of the world..

Our security services are amongst the best and most effective in the world and this, together with NATO and the Five Eyes Group comprised of the UK, the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, through which we receive the bulk of our intelligence data are what safeguards our security.

In addition The proposals for an EU Army would severely threaten NATO. It is clear that those who would harm us can all too easily enter the EU through it's permeable external border and once in can cross from one end of

the schengen zone to the other.

Any suggestion that a leave vote would lead to a second Scottish referendum is a red herring. It could not happen without facilitating legislation through the UK Parliament and it is unlikely any Government would agree to this. In addition Scotland's First Minister does not have a majority in the Scottish Parliament and so could not get through even a motion supporting a request to the British Government for such a referendum. It is simply a scare tactic along with the plague, pestilence and WW3 we have already been promised in the event of a leave vote.

Neil further asserts that voting to remain in the EU is the 'patriotic' thing to do thereby also asserting that to vote to leave is 'unpatriotic. This I find insulting and offensive to the millions of people like me who will vote to leave on June 23rd and who care deeply about their country.

Membership of the EU has involved a massive loss of Sovereignty. We are now governed by an unelected Commission and 59% of our laws now emanate from there.(House of Commons Library figure). The Highest Courts in our Land are subject to being overturned by the European Court of Justice. Whilst members of the EU we can do nothing about this or rid ouselves of the unelected beaurocrats in Brussels. The so called European Parliament cannot initiate legislation and what decisions it does make can be overturned by the Commission. We can no longer truly be a sovereign democratic state and be a member of the EU. It is a matter of great sadness that someone elected to Parliament so recently would so readily support ceding our mature parliamentary democracy which has taken over 800 years to develop and to an external body.

The risks of remaining in the EU are clear. There is a real risk of another Eurozone crisis, the EU has shown itself incapable of dealing with the migrant crisis apart from promising accelerated accession to Turkey despite the human rights abuses, the far right is on the rise across the EU to name just a few and yet the response seems to be 'we need more Europe'. For the sake of my children, our Sovereignty and our democracy I will vote to leave on June 23rd.

My eye on transport

T HAS been a busy first month at City Hall under the new Mayor and London Assembly.

I am the new Labour London Assembly Spokesperson on Transport and excited to see my predecessor Val Shawcross appointed as the new Deputy Mayor for Transport.

As a resident in Lambeth, commuting to work in Southwark, I know how vital it is for our transport system to be fully integrated, affordable and accessible to all. Thousands of Londoners rely on public transport on a daily basis and, for a growing city, public transport needs to be more appealing to help reduce the poor air quality across the capital. Mayor Sadiq Khan has already announced a number of transport policies to help address this problem and to bring down the cost of fares.

The first major policy announcement from the Mayor on extending the UltraLow Emission Zone (ULEZ) to include the South Circular and a proposal to implement an extra charge on the most polluting vehicles from 2017 demonstrates a step change to take real action on dealing with the real issues of London’s poor air quality.

The announcement of the new one hour bus ‘Hopper’ ticket on London busses will be a big boost for residents across Lambeth and Southwark on lower incomes as a number of people rely on buses to get themselves to work every day.

The announcement that the Night Tube will launch on the Victoria Line, which runs through Lambeth on 19 August is an excellent and long overdue expansion of the transport network and real boost for the night-time economy.

An area that I believe is sometimes overlooked is the need for improvements to access for disabled and elderly residents. Navigating through a busy underground station or trying to make that vital bus change at a busy interchange like Elephant and Castle or Vauxhall, can be daunting at most times and this experience is even more difficult for disabled and elderly residents. I am keen to see additional improvements across all transport modes for disabled and elderly residents and will be pushing Transport for London and the Mayor on their plans for this going forward.

Over the next few months I will be out an about on the streets across Southwark to get a better understanding of some of the transport challenges our local community faces. I’m keen to work closely with transport groups and listen to their ideas on how we can improve our tubes and buses, but most importantly I’m keen to hear the views of local people.

The Shrew evokes tears

Katherine, played at short notice by the mighty Aoife Duffin, creates a visceral beginning to the story with a lament. Though not perfect in pitch it felt guttural and unexpectedly awoke my Irish roots, moving me to tears!

All thanks to the ethereal music of Bill Barclay.

Katherine's father despairs as he cannot marry off his younger daughter Bianca (Genevieve HulmeBeaman), who has many suitors, until the unruly Katherine is wed. Enter rough and ready Petrucio (Edward MacLiam).

Depicted in silent slow motion, the physical wedding scene creates a strikingly riotous image. However Petrucio takes Katherine away immediately to, basically, knock her into shape…

Petrucio believes he is acting in the best interest of his new bride by starving, tormenting and breaking her spirit. This is all played out in poignant and thought provoking scenes.

Momentum is never lost in this play, in parts hilarious, yet achingly beautiful. Imogen Doel as servant Tranio and Molly Logan as Biodello

Katherine's submissive final speech was the challenge for my friend and I. All the words were there and in the right order, but we concluded (rightly or wrongly) her emphasis was on irony! We so didn't want her to go the way of 'Shrews' from the past and submit! For us Katherine is never truly tamed - she was perfect in her own magnificent, unyielding way! A great night at the Globe...again!

Rise and shine

I WAS sitting there as the drunken, tarty mother, all roots and red lippy, returned, slurring and slobbering, from another night out to her dingy little flat. Breathing breath filled with beer and Bensons over me and everyone else in the front row of the Union Theatre.

Charlotte Gorton was home and about to make The Rise and Fall of Little Voice her own in the role of Mari Hoff, alcoholic mother of LV, her mousy, timid, neglected daughter who has had to fend for herself and amuse herself ever since her father – F. Hoff - died, writes Michael Holland...

Ray Say, a chancer who fancies himself as both a ladies’ man and impresario around the northern town Jim Cartwright’s play is set in, is at the end of a long line of men that Mari brings home: ‘I love it when you talk swanky,’ she pants into his face. LV, shortened from the derogatory Little Voice because she talks in a whisper when compared to her mother’s brashness, is introduced to Ray then quickly humiliated by Mari, so runs to the sanctuary of her room to play her dad’s old records - her only respite from the mayhem and dysfunction she is surrounded by. When the fuse blows the electric Ray hears LV singing in the silence and, recognising talent, sees the opportunity to make a few quid.

From then on Mari feels herself being side-lined by Ray when all the attention goes on LV as he tries to lure her into singing at the local nightclub, and Mari does not like it. She takes it out on LV

and becomes unnecessarily obnoxious to her neighbour Sadie who, being grateful to have any sort of a friend, absorbs it all. It is a hard watch as Mari’s nastiness smashes through all polite boundaries.

From the title we know what to expect. It is the rise and fall, though, of almost all the characters in this work not just of Little Voice, but it is such a treat sharing the journey with this bunch of misfits. Besides the main players there is Billy, a shy electrician who becomes LV’s saviour, and Mr Boo, the nightclub owner and compere who has a nice line in patter. There are laughs and there are painful moments as we watch people lose their grip on what life and little dignity they have left to hold on to. All concerned give sterling performances that will get even better as the run continues.

After the interval we see LV break out of her shell to shine, then surprise us all as she wreaks an apocalypse on to her domineering mother. We know that there is going to be no Phoenix-like rise from the ashes for any of these luckless creatures.

This is the last show at the Union Theatre before it crosses the road to new premises. In the last 18 years we have seen it rise to amazing heights and we almost saw it fall at the hands of greed, so this play is a fitting end to what has been a magnificent era.

WHAT DO you do for lunch on the hottest day of the year thus far? Go for fish ‘n’ chips, what else? And make sure you get a window table so you can see all the people enjoying the weather in Brockwell Park across the road, writes Michael Holland...

But this was no ordinary fish ‘n’ chips, this was in award-winning Olley’s, which

is as close to fine dining as you can get whilst having Britain’s national dish.

Having been to Olley’s several times before we knew what we were getting: good fish in good batter, cooked well.

We supped on white wine as we perused the menu: a Sauvignon for Mum, and a Viognier for myself. Both crisp little wines that seemed just right for a lovely day with some fish on its way.

We both went for the Seafood Platter to start, a nice selection of Scampi, Cod, Plaice, Calamari and King Prawn, all in a delectable batter, whose perfection matched the delights within.

After that course we spoke with Eileen our informative waitress who talked us through what must be quite a talking point on the menu: The Cilla Black Experience.

She told us that it was named after the late and great lady who once visited Olley’s and ordered Battered Haddock, Scallops (3) and King Prawns, also 3, with a dozen

small pickled onions! Why Cilla was there Eileen was not aware of, but she knew the tale to be true. “Okay Number One, what’s your name and where are you from?” I said in my best Scouse accent, though nobody was impressed…

Nevertheless, taking the young lady at her word I went for what Cilla had. Mum, having tasted the calamari with her starter, and obviously liking it, ordered a whole plateful for her main course.

The wines went well with the starter and suited our Mediterranean-like surroundings.

It was a quiet Sunday for the restaurant but an extremely busy day for the takeaway section with a constant trail of customers in and out and then over to the park to dine alfresco in the 24º sunshine after making last minute Sunday lunch arrangements, no doubt.

Mum, just back from a holiday, updated me on her latest adventures and of

ventures still to come but before we got on to a trip to Turkey Eileen was back with our main courses. And what a spectacle they were when they were placed before us.

Mum’s Calamari were as big as hulahoops, and after a taste she described them as ‘melt in your mouth’. One look at my Cilla Black Experience and I said I didn’t believe little Cilla could’ve ate all that. I asked if she may have ordered this for all her road crew rather than just for herself! The haddock could’ve played Moby Dick, never mind the other delicacies fighting for space on the huge platter before me.

However, in the spirit of food journalism I set about that fish dish with an enthusiasm last seen at an open bar!

I honestly can’t recall ever having battered haddock, I’ve always been a cod or rock man, but after trying this I will definitely have to put it on my fish ‘n’ chip

list. The batter was just right, the fish was flaky, and it doesn’t have to be anything other than that.

The King Prawns were also good, though I wasn’t sure about the battered Scallops.

Mum, who had salad with her Calamari, helped herself to a few of my chips, as there were far too many for me.

Towards the end we had visibly slowed down until we eventually had to stop. I was convinced more than ever that Cilla never finished all of her similar dinner, but my admiration for her for trying had risen.

It was an ‘experience’ and a very enjoyable one at that.

We could not even look at the dessert menu, but raised our glasses to Ms Black to finish off our wine instead.

TRACING THE ROOTS OF THE CARNIVAL

Paul Young to headline Bermondsey extravaganza, which began in 1900 as fundraiser for Boer families ON JULY 2 Southwark Park will host 1980s icon Paul Young as part of the popular Bermondsey Carnival. As revellers go to sip drinks and relax in the sun for a good time, its purpose has come a long way over a hundred years.

The carnival can trace its roots back to 1900 during the height of the Second Boer War, as a way to raise funds for the widows and orphans of the fallen British troops, writes Alex Yeates...

Although charity carnivals were already a feature of London life

toward the end of the 19th century, the outbreak of the war in 1899 between the British Empire and the South African Republic had a significant impact at home. With around 345,000 British soldiers overseas and tens of thousands never to return, a sense of urgency to help their families arose.

As ways of communication improved and the newspapers increased their coverage, the horrors of war were felt at home in great detail. The Daily Telegraph in particular thought it necessary as a result to set up a charity fund

for the families of the soldiers killed. As a way of raising funds for the cause, they looked to London’s charity carnivals.

From that point onwards till the end of the war in 1902, Britain waged on in a bloody guerrilla war knowing that if the worst happened their families would be taken of.

The first carnival for the Boer War took place in Lewisham on January 17 and 18, 1900 and was organised during a difficult period of the war, with Britain suffering reverses at Magersfontein, Stormberg, and Colenso in December the previous year.

Carnivals then started to take place in other places such as Brixton in March, to Charlton in Gravesend in May, and Bermondsey in July. British fortunes in South Africa were by this stage taking a turn for the better as Ladysmith and Kimberley,

besieged by the Boers since the previous autumn, were finally

both as contributors to the funds and as arrangers of procession items. Licensed alcohol sellers were particularly active as fundraisers and donors, as well as in providing spaces for public and committee meetings. Theatre proprietors were also able to draw upon a supply of props, costumes and players for decorated vehicles, as well as using their venues to hold entertainment to increase takings.

Other important participants included friendly societies, trade unions, sports clubs, political clubs, bands, voluntary army battalions, and branches of youth organisations like the Church Lads’ Brigade and Boys’ Brigade.

Political clubs, churches, schools and local government buildings also served as sites for public meetings and subsequently as committee headquarters.

Over the century the carnival grew and improved to receive support from Southwark Council but has still remained a community project. With music organised by Bermondsey Beat and entertainment provided by the Dockland Bell ringers and Millwall FC.

The first carnival for the Boer War took place in Lewisham on January 17 and 18, 1900 and was organised during a difficult period. relieved in February, and then on May 16, Mafeking was also relieved, prompting huge celebrations back in London, while Pretoria fell to British forces on June 5.

It was against this backdrop of British successes that the carnival movements spread north of the Thames and proliferated across the capital from late May through to early July. This trend eventually petered out but remained a constant feature of life in many places including Bermondsey.

Although a lot of the carnivals raised money for the Daily Telegraph’s fund for all the widows and orphans created by the war, Bermondsey’s was an exception as it reserved part of the funds for the families of local soldiers and sailors. Building on the strength of a community united behind a common cause, money was raised persistently and reliably years on end.

The carnival movements were widely able to happen because of the support from local businesses

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that to enable LB Southwark carriageway resurfacing works to be carried out, intends to make an order the effect of which would be to prohibit vehicular traffic from entering part of the above named roads.

Fisher’s Hickey schools boxing champion

FISHER BOXING club’s Sacha Hickey was crowned schools champion on Saturday after winning her final in Lincolnshire by a split points decision.

The twelve-year-old won the under 43kg section of the competition by defeating Bobbi Bowman from Houghton boxing club, in a bout that went to the judges’ scorecards.

Speaking after her win Hickey told the News: “I would like to thank those who helped me win this title.

Fisher ABC head coach Steve Hiser said of Hickey: “She is obviously a very good boxer, she can be quiet sometimes and other times she will walk in the gym and full of the joys of spring.

“She is good at football too and is captain of one of the young Lionesses sides and they rate her too.

She really could go on and do whatever she puts her mind too.”

NON-LEAGUE 43

A SOUTHWARK junior side who travelled the world together playing football have played their last game.

The current Docklands JFC U16 side, managed by Jamie Mehmet, have played together in Turkey, USA, Spain and at home over the last five years but as they are now at the top of the junior age groups at the club they will go their separate ways.

Mehmet said: “We have had a great journey together enjoying trips to Europe & America, playing teams like Porto, Valencia, Galatasaray, Besiktas and Chicago Fire.

“We’ve had lots of success on the field winning many leagues and cups and having an unforgettable season at u13 level winning the treble.

“They are the first Docklands team to achieve a treble and the first to win the prestigious London Cup. “We’ve seen many players move onto professional clubs over the years including Harry Payne, Jeremy Ngakia, John Sama, Joseph Olowu, Reuben Duncan, Prince Amoah and Archie Mehmet. The later three are all signed with Millwall FC U16s.

“I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank the players and parents who supported their children over the years and for trusting in my philosophy of development over results.

DULWICH CRICKET club moved up to third place in Division Two of the Travelbag Surrey Championship after their win against Farnham on Saturday.

The Southwark team won the toss at the weekend and put the home side into bat and they managed to skittle Farnham out for just 112 runs.

SATURDAY 28TH of May saw Millwall’s home ground ‘The Den’ play host to Millwall Premier League’s ‘Kicks League’ final. The Kicks League under the Premier League Kicks programme and has been devised to create positive structured competition between the Lewisham & Southwark Premier League Kicks projects.

The ideology behind the league is not create area or postcode wars, but for the young people to represent the ball court, community, or estate they are a part of with pride and compassion. The young people Millwall work with are ambassadors, and exceptional members of the community that deserve opportunities to express their potential and qualities at structured competition, like the Kicks league.

The last Friday of the month since September has seen young people

from every Millwall Kicks session in Southwark and Lewisham come together on a Friday evening to compete in league fixtures at the Community Trusts Lions Centre with the end goal being to get to the final of the Kicks League.

After the triumph of the Rotherhithe team last year, this year saw Silwood Estate and Canute Gardens competing in the final. The final was a tightly contested one after Silwood took a three-nil lead in the first half playing the free flowing, possession based game which they work on weekly at their sessions and which ultimately got them to the final.

However, the boys from Canute Gardens showed huge character to score twice in the second half to make it three-two to Silwood and make the last five minutes extremely tense. The boys from Silwood were delighted when the full time whistle went and were crowned champions

of the 2015/16 Millwall Kicks League champions.

Later on that day saw Millwall shirt sponsor Wallis Teagan holding their Wallis Teagan Cup 2016 at The Den in which they gracefully invited two Millwall Kicks sides to take part in their adult tournament. The tournament was fiercely competed with some great football on show from the teams involved. After three groups games in which Millwall Kicks A team drew two and won one of their three group games with the Millwall Kicks B winning all three of their group games. Both teams made it through the semi-finals and were grouped together. Millwall Kicks A dominated large chunks of the game and had the better of the chances but couldn’t find the back of the net on numerous occasions. The game in the end was won by a free kick from Millwall Kicks B player Ainsley Everett which curled into the back of the net from 25 yards out. The final of the Wallis Teagan Cup saw Millwall Kicks B

and Welling Park United face up in another tight game which in the end went to penalties and was won by the boys in sky blue of Welling Park United.

Millwall Community Trust Kicks coordinator Gerry Otim commented: “The Kicks League provides a brilliant opportunity for the young people of Southwark and Lewisham to demonstrate the skills that they’ve acquired during their weekly satellite sessions. Furthermore, the Kicks League provides an opportunity for the young people to represent their session and area, in a positive light once a month in a structured competition against peers from across the boroughs. The league as well as the satellite sessions are a clear indicator that football is the answer to tackling a lot of the challenging social issues that our communities face day in, day out. The final was a great day for the young people as it was for many a once in a lifetime opportunity to play on a professional football pitch and demonstrate the talent that flows throughout our Kicks sessions.

The Wallis Teagan Cup was a great event for some of our older Kicks participants as well as our Kicks graduates who used to attend the programme and still hold a close relationship with the programme and the coaches at the sessions. To many it’ll sound clichéd but at Kicks we are all a big family and despite the fact some of the boys no longer attend our sessions doesn’t mean we forget about them. Both teams played the way we’ve always known them to play. Fast free flowing attacking football we would like to think our Kicks sides over the years have been known for. We would like to thank Wallis Teagan for inviting us to the tournament. Our young people really enjoyed the day.”

THE LEAGUE One play-off final may have ended in heartbreak for Millwall, but for one brave lionheart, it was a day to remember.

Harvey Brown, who is well known to Millwall fans and club officials, was specially chosen to be the Lions' mascot for the Wembley final against Barnsley.

And despite the result, his father, Dean, told the News that he was ‘proud’ of his son and that Harvey was 'buzzing' throughout the whole day.

“I was so proud of him” said Dean. “He stood there before the match on the pitch like a little soldier. He was buzzing. The result didn't spoil the day for him.

“The club said around Christmas time that if we made the play-offs and Wembley, Harvey would be the club's mascot.”

“We got to The Den at 10am and started the day with photos in the club shop. Then we were invited by John West to travel to Wembley on the blue bus, which was great.

“On our arrival to Wembley, we

met a lady who took us into the mascots room. From there, we went out on to the pitch – some of the fans started to chant Harvey's name, to which he turned round and waved with a smile.”

“We then sat in Millwall's dugout, which Harvey loved.

“After that, we went on to the side of the pitch for more photos. We were told not to go too far, but the head groundsman came up to us and said to go where we liked, which was brilliant!”

A trip to the changing rooms was next for Harvey and his dad picked out Sid Nelson as the star of the show.

Nelson was on the bench that day, but despite that, he was still willing to go out of his way to make it a day to remember for Harvey.

Despite the emotional aspect of the day, Dean said that he managed to hold it together.

“Sid was brilliant,” Dean said. “He showed him round and introduced him to everyone. Neil Harris signed his programme and then it was time to go out on to the pitch. It was

absolutely fantastic.

“As parents, we were immensely proud of him. I thought I was going to lose it, but I held it together. His mum, who was in the crowd, didn't!

“It was an emotional day – the hairs on my arms are standing up talking about it.

“He's an amazing boy, he just gets on with it and puts others to shame.”

The Brown family reserved special praise for Richard White, Community Development & Health Improvement Manager at Millwall, who got the ball rolling with Harvey's campaign.

The News has previously reported on a petition that received over 10,000 signatures to get treatment to help with Harvey’s condition, Morquio syndrome, an inherited illness caused by an enzyme deficiency. Harvey’s treatment was given the green light by the government just before Christmas in December of last year.

“Richard caught a whiff of Harvey's story when there was a piece about him in the Southwark News,” Dean said. “He walked into

a shop and saw the paper and Harvey with his Millwall shirt on.

He thought he could help the family and got in touch.

“He said Harvey had touched his heart and that he wanted to help him. I really appreciated it and it helped with the petition – he set up a Twitter page for Harvey that he still helps with now, too.”

Along with the club, Lions fans have fully supported Harvey's campaign from its inception and the Brown family wanted to thank everyone that has helped so far.

“Every time you think the club have done enough, there's just more – it keeps going on,” Dean said.

“They've been absolutely fantastic.

The fans and the club in general have been amazing.”

“We can't thank them enough, from the bottom of our hearts. The fans and the club get bad press, but every one of them have been amazing. They call it the Millwall family – that's what it is. Neil Harris and everyone else are genuine. It's from the heart – they're amazing people.”

Neil Ardley’s men won promotion to England’s third tier with a 2-0 win over Plymouth in the League Two play-off final. The Lions will face off against the Wombles for the first time in a league fixture next year. The last time the two sides met, Andy Keogh and Martyn Woolford ensured safe passage through to round two of the League Cup in 2013-14, defeating their opponents 2-1.

The Bantams finished inside the play-off places by virtue of a better goal difference than Gillingham - by three goals. Phil Parkinson’s men faced the Lions in the League One play-off semi-final but were unable to replicate the results they had against the Lions earlier in the season as Harris’ men progressed. Bradford will be looking to set things right against Neil Harris’ men next season and they are amongst the favourite for promotion to the Championship. The Gas secured promotion back the League One thanks to a final day win to gain an automatic route to League One. Rovers have won back-to-back promotions after they win the National League two years ago. They will be looking to not only establish themselves in the league but to try and make it a hattrick of promotions under the stewardship of Darrell Clarke.

Millwall won the last time these two sides met back in December 2009. Goals from Steve Morison and an own goal from Rovers’ Pat Baldwin secured three points for the Lions at The Den.

BURY

David Flitcroft’s men flirted with the play-offs last season before tailing off towards the end of the season to finish 14th in the division. The Shakers will be looking to sustain a play-off push next season to push on and try and break into the top six and have a shot at making it to the Championship. The Lions achieved a league double over Bury last campaign with Shaun Williams scoring the only goal of the game at The Den to give the Lions a 1-0 win. The last time the two sides met, however, Chris Taylor’s double and Steve Morison’s strike secured a vital 3-1 win at Gigg Lane as Harris’ men looked to secure a play-off place.

CHARLTON ATHLETIC

A farcical season from Millwall’s near neighbours last time out.

Protests over ownership and mismanagement saw stress balls and balloons thrown onto the pitch at some home games in anger at the way the club is currently being run.

Russell Slade being appointed, however, is a step forward for the Addicks. Slade has won League One Manager of the Year on two occasions and is a canny appointment by Charlton’s under pressure Belgian owners.

The last time the two sides met was in the Championship two seasons ago when the Lions were relegated.

The Spirites staved off relegation late on in the season after what was a below-par campaign. Danny Wilson replaced Dean Saunders as manager after the latter was sacked in November after six months in charge having lost six games in a row.

Sam Morsey was sold to Wigan towards the end of the season, and their talismanic midfielder was a vital part of their good early season form. Chesterfield will be hoping to improve on their below-par form at the end of the campaign to look to push on toward the top half of the table. The last time the two sides met it was Millwall’s first visit to the Proact Stadium. Goals from Aiden O’Brien and Lee Gregory sent the Lions on their way to three points despite going a goal down.

COVENTRY CITY

Founded: 1883 Stadium: Ricoh Arena Last season: 8th Current title odds: 14/1

The Sky Blue’s League One campaign in the 2015-16 started and ended in two totally different fashions. Tony Mowbray’s side started off like a house on fire and roared to the top of the league, and remained there for much of the first half of the season. Adam Armstrong was in blistering form but then the goal dried up and Coventry’s form dipped alarmingly. From odds-on favourites to gain Promotion to the Championship to finishing eighth, five points off the play-offs. The last meeting between the two sides ended in defeat for Millwall. Byron Webster’s header gave Neil Harris’ men the lead before Shaun Williams was sent off for an off the ball clash of heads in a game the Lions would eventually lose 2-1.

FLEETWOOD TOWN

Founded: 1908 Stadium: Highbury Stadium Last season: 19th Current title odds: 33/1

It took until the penultimate game of the season for the Cod Army to secure their position in League One for the forthcoming 2016-17 League One season. Fleetwood have signed non-league goal machine Ashley Nadesan, who had a trial with the Lions towards the tail end of last season. Nadesan was working in McDonalds before signed for the Fylde coast club from Horley Town. The striker scored 99 goals in two seasons with the Combined Counties Football League side. The last meeting between the two sides was at The Den in April where Steve Morison’s chip secured the points in only the second-ever meeting between the two teams.

GILLINGHAM

Founded: 1893 Stadium: Priestfield Last season: 9th Current title odds: 16/1

Gillingham’s season ended in a similar style to Coventry’s. The Kent club were in the higher reaches of the league for most of the season with some sensational early and middle of the season form. Their form curtailed substantially towards the end of the season, not winning any of their final six league games. The Gills only dropped out of the top six for the first time during the season inside the last month of fixtures. The last meeting of the two sides saw Millwall’s Lee Gregory score a 98th-minute penalty to secure a vital three points for Harris’ men. Mahlon Romeo was sent off and missed all three games of the Lions’ play-off campaign.

MK DONS

Founded: 2004 Stadium: Stadium MK Last season: 23rd (Championship, relegated) Current title odds: 10/1

Karl Robinson’s men made an immediate return to League One after one season playing in England’s second tier. The Dons will be buoyed by the signing of former Millwall midfielder Ed Upson who decided on the switch to the relegated side because of his suitability in their style of play. MK Dons will have their first league meetings with AFC Wimbledon to look forward to as the pair are in the same division together for the first time in their histories since the controversial rebranding of the original Wimbledon. Millwall have only lost once to MK Dons in their four meetings. The last being in February 2010 as Danny Schofield scored and a Neil Harris double gave Kenny Jackett’s men a 3-1 win at Stadium: MK.

NORTHAMPTON TOWN

Founded: 1879 Stadium: Six Fields Last season: 1st (League Two, champions) Current title odds: 16/1

The Cobblers won the League Two title at a canter last time out. Despite the threat of a winding-up. Chris Wilder had performed a miracle to get Northampton up. Wilder has since joined Sheffield United as manager after Nigel Adkins’ departure. Recently released Millwall players John Marquis and Lee Martin spent time at Six Fields last season helping the Northamptonshire club to promotion. The last the two sides met was in the JPT last season where Aiden O’Brien and Lee Gregory goals saw the Lions progress further in the Football League Trophy.

MILLWALL have announced that Wallis Teagan will continue as the club's main sponsor for the forthcoming League One campaign,

The local building contractors were announced as principle sponsors last summer for the 2015-16 season.

And The Lions have today confirmed the firm will sponsor both the first team and academy kits for a further 12 months.

MILLWALL CHIEF executive Andy Ambler feels the club need to prioritise those fans who travel up and down the country - to secure tickets to some of the more high-profile away games next season.

The Lions will be come up against AFC Wimbledon, Charlton Athletic and Gillingham next season, with

tickets sure to be at a premium for the in-demand fixtures.

Tickets to Priestfield for Millwall’s final regular season match against the Gills sold out within hours of going on sale, with many fans who had attended the majority of Lions games on the road missing out.

And Ambler feels those fans who attended Fleetwood, Wigan and Blackpool on Tuesday nights and missed out on tickets to the most local game of last season, should be rewarded with some form of priority for their continued support.

“We are looking at loyalty scheme,” Ambler told the News. “I think it’s about time we looked at whether we can bring a successful scheme to our away tickets.

“The ones who travelled up and down the country and do the miles, now need an extra level of priority in a certain way.

“That is what we will look at, a priority system for those who commit to going to most [away] games.

But Ambler will be liaising with the relevant personnel to discuss any change in the away ticketing is handled.

“There is an away season ticket for fans,” Ambler explained. “Some may not know that but you can guarantee an away ticket by opting for the that service, and it is open to season ticket holders.

“But there is a system in place, we only had between 20 and 30 join that last year.

“What we will do is use this time

in June to look at things carefully and how we can bring that in, and that is what we will be doing.

“I would hope [it will be in for the new season], let’s see.

“I need to speak to Pru Buckley, who has done a brilliant job as head of ticking this year.

“The Wembley tickets were handled really well, everyone got their tickets and no one had to queue up in the old style way.

“She has handled it really well, I will speak to her and Alan Williams to see what the system is able to do, and we will take that forward.”
